Stuck in a Spiritual Rut? Neuroscience Might Have the Answer. – ChristianityToday.com

Read your Bible. Pray. Go to churchtwice on Sundays. And dont sin. Be sure not to sin.

This was the extent of my spiritual formation.

Of course, no one talked about spiritual formation when I was growing up. Reading the Bible, fasting, and prayer were part of my devotions, not part of a package of historic spiritual disciplines. These were just the things we did to grow our faithto become holy, as God is holy.

And the simplicity of these activities served me well. Untilwhile in collegethey didnt.

Thats when I encountered Richard Fosters Devotional Classics, soon followed by Dallas Willards The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives, and his Renovation of the Heart: Putting On the Character of Christ. These books opened my heart and mind to broader streams of Gods life-giving water. They led me down Gods ancient paths of transformation.

As for so many, discovering this wider tradition of spiritual disciplineswhich included practices like meditation, fasting, and Sabbath restwas a revelation and a relief. I no longer had to cut my own path with God, each day, alone. Now an ancient way stretched before me that I could walk with others.

Jim Wilders new book, Renovated: God, Dallas Willard and the Church That Transforms, integrates these ancient pathways with findings from brain science about our neural pathways. Wilder shows how contemporary neuroscience transforms our understanding of spiritual formation.

(Before Willards health began to decline, Wilders goal had been to co-write this book with him. As a witness to their original collaboration, Wilder alternates his own chapters with chapters by Willard, based on transcripts of the lectures he gave at the 2012 Heart and Soul Conference. These chapters, which summarize his thoughts on human life and the process of spiritual maturity, are the perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with his work.)

After a couple of years spent zealously practicing spiritual disciplines, two realizations emerged. First, it seemed many of my friends either resisted them or could not engage with them. They were not experiencing transformation like I had.

Second, these practices didnt fix everything in my own life. I still struggled with sin. I would often go through the motions. And I fell into a new legalism just as my spiritual maturity plateaued. I wondered why my growth had stalled out.

I soon found that other church leaders were wondering the same things. Why do some people benefit from spiritual disciplines while others seem to flounder? Why do some people embrace them wholeheartedly while others just shrug them off? And why, after these disciplines help us grow for a time, does the fruit sometimes begin to fade?

Renovated speaks to these very questions. Wilders book is for those feeling stuck in a spiritual-formation rut, for those longing to see others grow spiritually, and for those interested in how brain science transforms our understanding of spiritual growth.

Wilders book recommends three main shifts in how we understand the process of spiritual formation. The first is a shift from thinking about God to thinking with God.

A. W. Tozer famously said that what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. Yet Wilder, leaning on what we know about the brain, argues that thinking about God is too slow of a mental process to actively transform our lives. He calls it a slow-track mental process that can only focus on one thing at a time. Thoughts that develop on this slower track appear in our minds too late to inform actions in real time.

This slow-track process is great when there is time to pause and reflect on complex problems. Its less helpful, however, amid the stress, fear, and disappointment of everyday life. As Wilder observes, our slow-track thinking focuses our attention just in time to see our sinful reactions, but not in time to follow Jesus at the speed of life.

A better alternative, Wilder argues, is thinking with God, which utilizes fast-track mental processes that can focus on (and react to) multiple things at once.

Have you ever reacted to a dangerous situation without thinking? Have you ever responded to someone in a way you regret? This is your fast-track brain at work. Wilder explains that our fast-track brain produces a reaction to our circumstances before we have a chance to consider how we would rather react.

These instantaneous reactions will probably go awry if our fast-track brain has been trained the wrong way. But they can be useful if it has been trained in a good way. A fast-track mind trained according to Gods will is able to think with God in the midst of real-time interactions.

Thinking with God is like how a sports team wordlessly works together to achieve its goal. Or how a jazz band spontaneously flows together. When a team or a band practices togetherstopping and starting over again until everything is flowing smoothlythis is like thinking about God (slow-track). The game or the performance is like thinking with God (fast-track).

But the difference between thinking about God and thinking with God is more than just the difference between practice time and game time. We might be tempted to assume that a shift toward thinking with God would focus on our actions more than our thoughts. And in a certain sense, programs of spiritual formation do tend to emphasize our practices more than our underlying beliefs.

But even spiritual practice only gets us part of the way toward spiritual maturity, because true spiritual transformation requires a change in our fast-track brain. And changing our fast-track brain is connected to growing our relational skills and capacities.

As Wilder explains, our spiritual maturity is directly related to our relational maturity. And unfortunately, most spiritual disciplines do not focus directly on growing relational capacity. They arent meant to do that. However, since God is a Trinity, and therefore relational, it makes sense that our relational capacity would be connected to our spiritual maturity.

Relational skills (like shared gratitude, calming the body when stressed, understanding nonverbal cues, and practicing emotional attunement) grow through relational exercises. And when our relational skills and capacities grow, so does our ability to connect to our relational God.

When we reach a spiritual wall or plateau, we often either double down on our spiritual practices or cast them aside. But brain science tell us that the better answer is working to grow our relational skills as a means of growing our relational and spiritual capacity.

The third shift Wilder describes is from a form of discipleship rooted in me to one rooted in we.

From our first cries to our final breaths, the necessity of being attached to someonefirst to our parents and then to a larger groupmeans that my sense of me is always built upon an established sense of we. Our semi-automatic reactions to life are marked indelibly by the people we spend the most time with, the group we identify with. At the most basic level of our brains, we become like the ones we love.

Growing up, we all receive a fast-track pattern (or a program file, as Wilder calls it) that tells us how my people act in a given situation. And because this program file is buried in our fast-track brain, it is incredibly hard to override when we are tired, stressed, afraid, or angry.

Because of this, Wilder argues that true transformation comes through changing our understanding of who my people are and how they act. As he writes, transforming our character depends on becoming attached by love, joy, and peace to a new people. And this is why discipleship is fundamentally a we, rather than me, activity.

By ourselves, it is nearly impossible to change the assumptions of our fast-track brain and the actions that flow out of them. Instead, our character changes in and through community as a process of trial and error, which involves learning how the people of God act in various situations. We first see how more mature disciples behave in the crucibles of everyday life. Then we imitate their reactions as best we can. And eventually we spontaneously act in a way that witnesses to our identification with a new peoplethe people of God.

Spiritual practices done alone will not change our character. They may help a little. But relational skills grown through community will lead to lasting transformation.

The goal of all spiritual formation is being conformed to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29), who was fully human as well as fully divine. So it only makes sense that a deep understanding of our humanityincluding our brainsshould inform that process. Renovated is a gift to the church, to all who long to understand the impact of neuroscience on spiritual maturity, and to all who were blessed by the work of Dallas Willard.

Just Call Me Pastor: There is no life without light – La Grande Observer

By my reckoning I have been in total, impenetrable darkness only once in my lifetime.

Kathleen and I and our children were returning from a camping vacation in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri to our home in central Illinois. As we sped toward the Mississippi River, signs began to announce that we were approaching the famous Meramec Caverns that draw many thousands of visitors each year.

Why not have one more thrill before we get home, we suggested to the children. There were cheers all around. We were soon parked and quickly entered the anteroom of a large cave. Our group of tourists was ready for the march inward.

We followed a string of lights high above our heads deeper into the cave. It was an unfamiliar, weird and wonderful world of several giant rooms. The path sloped slightly downward, and as we moved along, our guide pointed out the wonders of stalactites and stalagmites (and more) before us.

At the deepest point in the tour we were taken into the final room carved out of the earthen depths, with twenty chairs arranged in two rows. Our guide told us that he would turn off the light for a few seconds, preparing us to feel utterly isolated and almost disoriented by the absolute lack of light. Kay and I sat shoulder to shoulder. When the one ceiling light was switched off I could still feel her shoulder against mine. But turning toward her I could not see the outline of her head or any features of her face. The darkness was abject. I felt surrounded by a curtain of thick, inky darkness.

Most people would think theyve experienced total darkness, but a few photons here and there are almost always available. Even closed eyelids are rarely able to screen out every vestige of light. And of course, in the modern world, anywhere inhabited by humans will have a bit of illumination from the lights on porches, shining from windows or the headlamps of cars.

Experiences of extreme darkness are much better known in the world of the Bible, before the availability of artificial light. And, notably, the Scriptures begin with knowledge of a primordial utter darkness that had to be dispelled as the first step toward creation: Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, Let there be light (Genesis 1:2-3).

Later, the Bible treats darkness also as a symbol, using the absence of light to represent evil or mystery or wickedness. It is opposite to the goodness of light.

Old Testament Job, in spite of his perplexity at his profound suffering, says: Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face (Job 23:17).

Jeremiah warns the stubborn people of Israel that they must repent of their unfaithfulness to avoid being visited by darkness: Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings the darkness (Jeremiah 13:16a).

The Apostle Paul uses darkness as an analogy for a willful lack of knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 4:3-6).

And perhaps most famously, the Apostle John in the New Testament makes great use of this analogy to teach and caution the young church. He writes: This is the message we have heard from him and declared to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:5-7).

When we have inner darkness our every step is cast in gloom. The darkness diminishes our hope. The darkness of which the Apostle John speaks is often of our own doing and our shame. But it does not need to be so. The Gospel light is available to all.

The Apostle Paul writes of the Lord Jesus: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:13).

Jesus is still the light of the world offered to all who will believe.

Is the government an authority in spiritual matters? – Uganda Christian News

By Paul W. Dennis

The nationwide move to continue closing churches, as part of the broader effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus has encountered resistance for several weeks now.

Pastor Charles Kasibante, the vision bearer of Destiny Matters, is among several born-again preachers who have stepped up and disregarded claims that Churches in Uganda are not essential.

The preacher recently encouraged government to reopen churches noting that their role goes beyond the physical, to dealing with spiritual matters.

The word of God has been sustaining people for the longest time. Governments of the world do not even know half of what the church has done. I pastor a Church. I meet all kinds of people that come to me at the altar. And they share problems that the government cannot solve, he said.

I laugh at people that think church is not essential. If churches are closed for the next one year, you are going to see the people that will run into depression, he noted.

Pastor Charles went on saying that the country must understand the reality of the spiritual world. The spiritual world is real. It is not a myth. It is not an ideology, he said.

Your physical world is a reflection of your spirit world. When there is a spiritual connotation to an issue, you cannot solve it with a physical approach, he continued.

In Mark 5:9, readers are introduced to a man possessed by a legion of demons living inside of him. The scripture reveals that he kept screaming night and day among the tombs and on the mountainsides, and kept cutting himself with stones.

As the people of the nearby village found out, Pastor Charles explained, the impulse to self-harm couldnt be healed by shackles and chains (Mark 5:4) only Jesus could.

From this bible story we find a revelation that the man was under the influence of something spiritual. Many people in the modern world try to alienate the fact that someone can be spiritually bound, that is why they are going to use all Kinds of names like mental health issues and are going to recommend therapy, he said.

It is important for you to understand that you can treat a situation of which a demon has left but you cannot treat a situation that still has a demonic bondage. That is why when it comes to matters of sickness, healing is from God, but treatment can be by doctors, he said.

When the light comes to a place, demons have to leave. One of the things Jesus did mostly was that he cast out devils. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8), he said.

I know so many people who are in incarceration that have been locked down, but the truth is, their situation is spiritual, and when demons leave, those men will change, he continued.

Somebody needs God to deliver them, and we are going to minister deliverance at the altar. So many people are wrongly positioned in matters of destiny not because they are not hard working, because there is a spiritual opposition. Matthew 12:29 says, Or again, how can anyone enter a strong mans house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. he stated.

Many people think that you can solve a demonic situation by going to a shrine. That is false. You cannot solve a demonic situation by visiting another demonic entity. You have got to find a place that carries another spirit, he noted.

There are things we can do that hospitals cannot do. When the church of Jesus Christ operates fully at its power and level, we can deal with issues that marriage counselors cant, he said.

‘A spiritual shot in the arm’: Jehovah’s Witness convention spreads ‘Always Rejoice’ message amid coronavirus – AZCentral

Though it was chosen more than five years ago, the theme for this year's Jehovah's Witness convention is timely always rejoice.

The message came at a perfect time for 17-year-old Tessa Locke, who's been lamenting not being able to go to school or see her friends because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last weekend was the first of six online sessions she'll participate in as part of the organization's annual convention. They're typically held in massive sports stadiums that can accommodate tens of thousands of worshipers, but now she participates in a more intimate setting her living room, joined by only her family.

Locke said it's "easy to become sad or anxious" because of the circumstancesbut that her faith and the ongoing virtual convention has helped her recenter.

"I liked the point that true joy is a quality of the heart," she said. "Many people spend years trying to find happiness and be happy. This program, and the Bible, lays it out simply for us how we can do that is through Jehovah."

Locke's 55-year-old mother, Lilia Locke, echoed her daughter's statements and called the convention "super encouraging."

She said this year's theme reminds her and others of spiritual truths to help them see hope despite widespread fear.

"He sees the suffering that humankind is undergoing with the pandemic, with people losing their lives because of this virus and it pains God to see these things," she said. "The Bible guarantees us and reminds us that He will act and correct these matters and bring about better conditions so that people can enjoy life to the fullest, enjoy life without dealing with any of these ailments and suffering that we have."

Both Lilia Locke and her husband, Tom, have been Jehovah's Witnesses for most of their lives, with Lilia becoming a member of the organization in 1978 and Tom being baptized in 1982.

They've regularly attended the annual conventions since their respective baptisms, making their shared faith a priority as they raised children together.

"It's helped ... to really cement our bonds as a family together in a spiritual setting and helps us draw closer to the God we worship and each other," he said. "It's really a family tradition that we love and we enjoy every year."

Though the family wishes they could greet, hug and worship in person with other members of the organization, Lilia Locke said the loving atmosphere she's experienced at conventions in years past is transmitted even through this year's virtual format.

"The positive is we still felt the atmosphere of being in a worldwide brotherhood, and in unity with everyone, everywhere," Tom Locke said. "We don't worry about borders, race, skin color, anything we're just all together viewing this."

FOR SUBSCRIBERS: 'You are welcome here': Churches and pastors open doors and arms to LGBTQ worshipers

He said they still made the first day of the virtual convention a "special day" by having breakfast together as a family and participating in a study of The Watchtower, a Jehovah's Witness magazine, with their congregation via Zoom.

He added that the virtual format of the session allowed them to pause, digest and discuss the message with one another, calling it "really upbuilding."

Tyler Locke, 18, had much of the same takeaways from the convention's opening weekend as his parents and sister.

"The world is so uncertain, people don't know what to believe, what's going to happen, if things are going to get worse or better," he said. "Listening to these programs and having faith in God's word, we know the outcome. We have hope and faith for a better future."

Robert Hendriks, national spokesman for the organization, said this year's convention isa "spiritual shot in the arm" amid a backdrop of widespread fear and distress.

"The message is basically, joy is a product of the heart, if you will," he said. "It's an inside job. It's something that doesn't depend on what's happening externally it really is a quality of the heart."

Hendriks said the convention's topics are selected several years in advance to allow time to develop the videos and other materials necessary, and that leaders consider current events and biblical prophecy when choosing the theme.

"We have a world that's more divided, a world that's more at war than at peace these things are to be expected," he said. "For Christians to be able to walk in this time period, to be able to not only just survive but endure and do it joyfully, that's something we can project some years out because we know we're going to need to have love, to have joy, to be peaceful, to be courageous as the years go on."

Hendriks said the organization canceled all public meetings and conventions back in March. Though he said everyone misses physically being with each other, he said the organization is in no rush to return to its Kingdom Halls or convention venues.

"That sentimentality isn't going to move us to get together physically, because at the end of the day, spirituality has nothing to do with a building or a place it has to do with the connection we have with each other."

Local spokesman Jamie Dunjey said 47,000 Jehovah's Witnesses were set to descend on Phoenix and Tucson for the convention this summer before the pandemic hit.

Convention sessions are free to watch on theJehovah's Witness website.

Letter to The Editor: Spiritual warfare | Opinion – Paragould Daily Press

I never thought that I would ever write a letter to the editor, but I am so disgusted with our country and the world, I feel like I must say something. I am deeply saddened and concerned with the division in our country.

I am sick and tired of hearing about Republican versus Democrat; black versus white; male versus female, etc. The truth is that it is GOOD versus EVIL. Nothing more nothing less. Our country/world is in spiritual warfare. It is time to wake up.

My earthly father taught me at an early age, Trust, but verify. In other words, it is alright to believe what you see or hear, but then do your own research to verify and confirm the truth. My heavenly Father taught me, My people will be destroyed for a lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6. Knowledge is the key; always seek knowledge.

My heavenly Father also taught me, For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. Ephesians 6:12. Know this for a fact we are in spiritual warfare.

It is time (past time) for the silent majority to speak up! Forget the term political correctness. As Christians we are chosen and called to speak the TRUTH. The truth is I believe black lives matter. As a Christian I must believe this. I also believe all lives matter. In my opinion, any person offended by the statement that ALL lives matter is wrong and being deceived, and the king of deception is satan/devil/lucifer.

In my opinion, based on research and discernment, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) ORGANIZATION is not about black lives, but truly is a terrorist organization meant to divide the country even more than it already is. Dont trust me OR doubt me, verify this or dispute it with your own research and facts. BLM is not a non-profit, it is a corporation. ALL the money BLM raises goes to Act Blue. Do your own research and see where those millions and millions of dollars go (it is not going to black lives). Read the BLM official Mission Statement; does that sound like a Christian Mission Statement?

As a Christian, I am concerned about the world my children and grandchildren are facing. As a Christian, I am concerned about the EVIL in this world. As a Christian, I will no longer be silent or silenced, but will shout that we are in a spiritual warfare and it is a tough fight. But even satan knows, God wins!!

Please forget politics, race, sex, creed, etc. and remember it is all about GOOD vs EVIL. What team are you on? Will you play ball or sit on the bench? It is your choice free will.

Your brother in Christ,

Jeff Branch

God’s grace can ease the spiritual pain of COVID-19 – The Highland County Press

By Fr. Mike ParaniukSt. Mary Catholic ChurchHillsboro

You know what scares me the most about this COVID-19 virus? It is not the physical pain the virus causes. It is the spiritual pain.

I believe the devil is using the virus to spread discord, chaos, division and anger among Gods people. Peoples emotions are frayed and frustrated. Money is tight. Benefits for those laid off will be ending soon. If schools do not open, how can a family afford day care?

St. Mary School will open in August with plans in place to protect children and our teachers. But there are no guarantees against a future disruption. The flu season in October combined with a resurging COVID could close all schools again.

An old Cherokee told his grandson: "My son, there's a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It lives off fear. The other is Good. It lives on love."

The boy thought about it and asked: "Grandfather, which wolf wins?"

The old man quietly replied: "The one you feed."

The devil is tempting us to feed the evil wolf with fear. Fear is the fertilizer that will make the seeds of weeds grow in our soul. The devils weeds will try to destroy the good seed.

God plants in us the good seed of His Love. He put it in your soul when you were baptized. Every act of love you do feeds the good wolf. Two things happen when you chose love. First, the good seed God put in you will grow. It will produce the good fruits of patience, tolerance, forgiveness, and gentleness.

We need those fruits now more than ever. What I see is a spreading spiritual disease of us versus them. People different than me are to be feared. This way of thinking feeds fear, produces separation and fosters hate. The devil loves this. I can just hear him whispering, Be very very afraid

So how do we get rid of fear? The second thing that happens in choosing love is that it can defeat fear. 1 John 4:18 says, There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Perfect love is complete love. It is a love that trusts God completely.

When you trust God, you refuse to give into fear. If you really believe that God is good, then you believe that God has no desire to punish you. He doesnt have a computer with a smite button on it. There is no reason to fear. You dont have to be afraid of the storm in your life. I love this line from Mark 4:37-38 Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped. But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a pillow. Trusting God means you believe God can take the worst thing in your life and make it right. God says Sleep well. Be at peace. Ill take care of it.

Do not be fooled. We are now in a spiritual warfare. The devil is using this virus take you away from God. The devil wants to destroy your trust in God. A battle is raging for your soul. You have two choices: fear or love. If you chose fear, you feed the devils weed of separating your soul from God and one another. If you choose love, you feed the flower of Gods Spirit that will give you solace in the midst of woe.

I close with a thought about hummingbirds. Last year, I fed three hummingbirds. One male and two females. I enjoyed their chirping with wings buzzing over my head. Before migrating back to Mexico in October, the male hummingbird flew right up to my face. He stayed there for a while, suspended in air. It was like he was saying, Thanks, but gotta go.

With that, all three birds were gone. I heard that hummers would come back to the same feeder they left in the spring. I waited through April and May. No hummers came to my sugar water feeder. Sixty percent of these birds die while flying over the Gulf of Mexico. I guess mine didnt make it.

On Fathers Day June 21, I sat on my porch watching an empty feeder. A male hummer slowly glided up to the feeder, sticking his long black tongue into the little plastic flower to slurp the sugar. He flew around my head as if to say, Glad to be back.

Then the two females came right behind him. I could tell by their distinct mannerisms my peeps had returned to daddy. I was so happy. Then I thought, If these three hummers like me so much they traveled 4,000 miles to come back to me, how much more does God love me who traveled billions of miles across the universe to be with me now during this difficult time?

I truly have nothing to fear.

Lawsuit alleges SUNY Binghamton supported efforts of mob in thwarting free speech on campus – whcuradio.com

ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) A lawsuit alleges SUNY Binghamton officials supported efforts of a hostile student mob preventing free speech on the southern tier campus.

The suit stems from a November event hosted by college republicans. Renowned economist Dr. Arthur Laffer was presenting a lecture titled Trump, Tariffs, and Trade Wars.

Lawyers allege university officials and police refused to protect the First Amendment rights of students and Dr. Laffer by encouraging the mob and allowing megaphone-wielding activists to shut down the event.

SUNY officials assist antagonist mob in disrupting event, silencing conservative guest speakerActivists shut down world-renowned economist Art Laffers scheduled lecture, university supports hostile mob, punishes conservativesWednesday, July 22, 2020

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. Alliance Defending Freedom and King & Spalding attorneys filed a lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Young Americas Foundation, College Republicans for the State University of New York at Binghamton, and a Binghamton student, challenging the unconstitutional actions and policies of the university that facilitated a mobs disruption of a conservative speaker.

Renowned economist and presidential medal of honor recipient Dr. Arthur Laffer was scheduled to give an extracurricular lecture entitled Trump, Tariffs, and Trade Wars at Binghamton University on Nov. 18, an event co-hosted by College Republicans and YAF. University police and administrators knew that a student group and an outside group planned to disrupt the event, gave disruptors direct access to the event and an adjacent room to organize the disruption, and allowed the mob to shout down the visiting economist and cancel the event.

Everyone should be free to speak about their beliefs, especially on a public university campus, said ADF Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer, director of the ADF Center for Academic Freedom. Instead, the student groups and Dr. Laffer encountered violent opposition to an extracurricular event that provided some deeply needed viewpoint diversity. Unfortunately, SUNY-Binghamton officials and police utterly refused to protect the First Amendment rights of its students and Dr. Laffer. Instead, they encouraged the mob and stood by as megaphone-wielding activists shut down the event. These students and their guests have the same right to speak as anyone else without fear of being physically assaulted or relentlessly antagonized by hostile disruptors. This blatant viewpoint discrimination cannot stand.

Four days before the event, College Republicans hosted a table where they handed out hot chocolate and flyers promoting the upcoming lecture. Using social media messages, members of the College Progressives student organization incited individuals to disrupt this disgusting space. According to the complaint and video footage, approximately 200 persons gathered, confiscated and destroyed event flyers, broke down the College Republicans table, hurled insults and obscenities at their members, and physically assaulted one member, forcibly removing her hat bearing the political slogan Make America Great Again.

When university police arrived, they refused to disperse the hostile mob but directed College Republicans to vacate the area as the mob chanted pack it up. Immediately following the disruption, YAF hired a private security firm to offer personal protection to Laffer and asked the university to ensure the event would continue without interruption. However, on the day of the event, school administrators admitted knowledge of threats by College Progressives and a non-student group, Progressive Leaders of Tomorrow, to disrupt the event. Rather than promising protection, university police blamed YAF and College Republicans for opening their event to the public instead of hosting a private event. University police allowed protestors to shout down the speaker with a megaphone without any intervention for nearly two minutes before directing Laffers security to escort him out of the lecture hall before he had the opportunity to speak.

The First Amendment protects the free speech rights of people of all beliefs. Public universities that pick and choose which voices can be heard on campus violate the First Amendment, said co-counsel Andrew C. Hruska of international law firm King & Spalding. Universities have an obligation to protect students free speech rights, regardless of their viewpoint. University officials that let loose a mob to suppress disfavored speech are as guilty as the mob itself of depriving students of their civil rights. SUNY students deserve better.

The free and open exchange of ideas is critical to a students education, but SUNY-Binghamton is shamefully depriving its student body of an intellectually diverse learning environment, said YAF Spokesman Spencer Brown. All students have the constitutionally protected freedom to organize events and have their voices heard without fear of being targeted and shut down by university-encouraged mobs. Young Americas Foundation remains committed to holding school administrators accountable for their censorship of conservative students at SUNY-Binghamton and across the country.

ADF attorneys and Hruska and Joseph L. Zales, attorneys with King & Spalding, filed the lawsuit, Young Americas Foundation v. Stenger, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

Pronunciation guide: Langhofer (LANG-hoff-ur); Hruska (RUH-ska)

The ADF Center for Academic Freedom is dedicated to ensuring freedom of speech and association for students and faculty so that everyone can freely participate in the marketplace of ideas without fear of government censorship.

Toward a New Birth of Freedom – National Review

Princeton University campus in 2013.(Eduardo Munoz/Reuters)We cannot allow the United States to become a country in which the price of dissent is so high that all but the bravest among us are unwilling to pay it.

NRPLUS MEMBER ARTICLEA pall of orthodoxy has descended over an increasing number of American institutions. The stifling of dissent and the pressuring of people to conform to ideological dogmas that began in universities has spread to the media and even to the corporate world. While official government censorship may be rare, we are living in a moment where the consequences of speaking out on the wrong side of controversial issues or even supporting others who speak out are often nothing short of personal and professional ruin. And while we can, and should, expect people to display some degree of fortitude when it comes to the private social consequences of free expression, the price has become so high that an ever-shrinking number of people are willing to pay it.

A prime example of this phenomenon is the situation that has been unfolding at my alma mater, Princeton University, over the past several weeks. On July 4, more than 350 Princeton faculty, staff, and graduate students signed a petition demanding the university do more to address racism on campus, including by creating a committee composed entirely of faculty that would oversee the investigation and discipline of racist behaviors, incidents, research, and publication on the part of faculty.

Many people, myself included, were stunned that a group of faculty would demand such an all-out attack on academic freedom a virtual academic Committee of Public Safety. One such person was Classics professor Joshua Katz, who several days after the July 4 faculty petition published his own Declaration of Independence by a Princeton Professor in Quillette. Katz supported some of the demands made in the petition that do not imperil academic freedom and integrity, but pushed back against the demands that do. Of the aforementioned committee, for example, Katz asked, is there anyone who doesnt believe that this committee would be a star chamber with a low bar for cancellation, punishment, suspension, even dismissal?

Katz also took issue with the demand that Princeton make a formal public University apology to the members of the Black Justice League and their allies. In light of what any reasonable person would acknowledge as abusive behaviors by BJL members towards other students, he described the BJL (a group which was active on campus from 2014 to 2016) as a small local terrorist organization that made life miserable for the many (including the many black students) who did not agree with its members demands.

Predictably, the official denouncements came fast and furious though, unsurprisingly, the shocking demand by Princeton faculty to abolish academic freedom at the university generated no such reaction, nor did their unlawful demand that faculty of color receive extra pay and sabbatical time compared to white faculty. Despite the regularity with which words like fascist and Nazi are used to denounce anyone who does not cleave to the increasingly dominant orthodoxy of the hard left, Katzs rhetorical use of the word terrorist to describe the bullying tactics of a now-defunct student group was deemed beyond the pale. The university quickly announced that it was looking into the matter further, as though someones expression of opinion were an appropriate subject for an official university investigation, and the Classics department posted an official denunciation of Katz on the departmental homepage.

Thankfully, Princetons administration ultimately realized that any investigation or punishment of Katz would have violated the universitys contractual guarantees of free speech and academic freedom, and President Chris Eisgruber publicly confirmed this week in the Daily Princetonian that Princetons policies protect Katzs freedom to say what he did, just as they protected the Black Justice Leagues. He can be answered but not censored or sanctioned.

But this would not have been the outcome at many institutions. And indeed, throughout this episode, supporters of Katz and his free speech rights have learned how deeply the cancel-culture poison has infiltrated American educational and corporate institutions. Last week, a Princeton alumnus circulated a statement in support of Katz, asking fellow Princeton alums to sign on. Sadly, the repressive climate of fear in which we find ourselves was evident in a number of the responses to that statement. To illustrate the reality in which we now find ourselves, I have been given permission to quote from a few of these responses (anonymously, of course, with any identifying details removed).

One individual wrote: I wish I could sign this letter supporting you just as I wish I could write one of my own. However, this persons corporate employer made clear that it would view this as purposefully undermining them and would probably fire them for signing the letter. This person expressed deep regret, but said that they simply could not forego the money they needed to support a growing family.

Another person, despite agreeing with the letter, declined to sign because If I admitted now what I really thought on this and a number of other topics, I would be finished in academic life. This person hoped someday to have the courage to speak their mind, but for the time being said to the statements author and to Katz himself that until then I ask for your and his forgiveness for not signing your letter.

Yet another person this one so fearful that they did not even use their real name and email address wrote:

It is sad that the day has come in America when this kind of article amounts to a brave act. I hope free speech and critical thinking will one day be universally valued again in academia, but I dont think that is the direction in which we are currently headed. For the time being, I hope your article will at least inspire other colleagues to speak their minds more sincerely.

As a junior tenure-track professor, I sympathize with your message, but I cannot afford the luxury to support it openly; hence why this email is regretfully unsigned.

This is madness and it is horrifying. We cannot allow the United States to become a country in which, despite legal protections for free speech, the price of dissent is so high that all but the bravest among us are unwilling to pay it. So how do we pull back from this precipice? Individual courage is important, but I believe a commitment to collective action is also necessary. There is safety in numbers. My own anecdotal sense, as someone who lives and breathes and discusses these issues on a daily basis, is that a majority of people of good faith from across the political spectrum believe that cancel culture is toxic and deeply corrosive of the ties that bind us together as a nation. The problem is, no one wants to be the first to say it. So we all need to say it. Its like the bystanders who allow the school bully to rampage unabated for fear of becoming his next target. Failing to intervene on behalf of someone being attacked may delay the inevitable attack on you, but thats all it can do. Standing up as a group and saying no more, however that can end the bullys reign altogether. And make no mistake: This is bullying, plain and simple.

In addition to standing up to the bullies who cow so many into silence, we must also stand up using, whenever possible, the power of the law to those cowards in positions of authority who give in to their own fear of the bullies by investigating and even punishing students, faculty, or employees for daring to dissent. Public institutions are bound by the First Amendment, and private institutions are for the most part contractually bound by the promises they make to students and faculty.

This fight is not going to be easy, and the victories will be incremental. But it is an unacceptable state of affairs when people cannot even express their support for someones right to dissent without fearing personal and professional destruction. Whatever account is to be given of how we came to such a pass, the sad fact is that we are here the basic liberty to speak ones mind, even on a university campus devoted to free and open inquiry in the pursuit of knowledge, exists only as a formality. It is up to us to make it a reality again. It will take individual courage together with cooperation across the lines of ideological division to produce what we so desperately need: a new birth of freedom.

If you think there should be a corner of our journalistic and intellectual life that defends right reason and is an alternative to the unhinged mainstream media, and if you have been alarmed at the sound of the American mind slamming shut at so many institutions recently, please lend National Review your support.SUPPORT NR TODAY

The Conspiracy Singularity Has Arrived – VICE

A few months ago, at a time when it was still safe to have strange experiences in unusual places, I was handed a mysterious document. ALLIANCES AND TRAITORS WITHIN THE TRUTH & UFO COMMUNITIES, it read.

The document was a single, bright red sheet of paper, crowded with close-set black type. Different kinds of lines and arrows connected in wild formulations, linking George Soros with the Illuminati, various stars of the UFO community with their alleged handlers, the CIA with Alex Jones. The Pleidiansa race of tall, blue-eyed Nordic alien beingsconnected with both Tesla and the president in ways I couldnt quite parse.

This paper was created and handed to me by Dylan Louis Monroe, a player in the QAnon world and the creator of the Deep State Mapping Project, a one-man operation where Monroe creates dense visual maps of the supposed alliances he sees between various major players and world events. Monroe was at the New Age expo Conscious Life selling Q-branded t-shirts and promoting a YouTube show, I was there reporting, and both of us were thinking about the strange alliances and friendships that had begun to surface in various conspiracy communities.

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU FOLLOW, the document warned, in bold, at the bottom, just above a large black Q.

In the months that followed our chance meeting, the world buckled under the weight of the novel coronavirus pandemic, and the alliances got stranger still. Conspiracy communities that have previously only brushed past each other like schools of fish borne along on different currents are suddenly, abruptly, swimming in the same direction.

Take Larry Cook, whose evolving belief system has been playing out in a remarkable way on Facebook. Cook is the man behind the largest anti-vaccine group on the platform, Stop Mandatory Vaccination, which, along with his personal Facebook page, serves as a central clearinghouse for anti-vaccine misinformation.

In the months since the pandemic began, Cook has begun to claim that its a pretext for the mandatory testing, tracking, and vaccination that hes feared all along. (There is no evidence that the U.S. government will impose mandatory vaccination for the coronavirus, even though it should.) Hes also started to turn towards people who can provide some explanation for whats really going on, and some measure of hope: Cook is promoting QAnon ideas, sometimes dozens of times a day. (QAnon is an ur-conspiracy theory which, broadly, holds that Donald Trump and his allies are bravely fighting back on a number of fronts against a shadowy, Satanic Deep State.)

I AM A DIGITAL SOLDIER, Cook posted recently, along with two Q-related hashtags, part of an oath that the mysterious Q had recently requested that his followers post. (Disgraced former Trump advisor General Michael Flynn was among those who posted the oath.) Linking to a webpage that shares Qs missives, Cook added, in another post, Discover why we have a lockdown and mask requirements for the healthy. (Cook didnt respond to an email from VICE News.)

Cook isnt an outlier. As Mother Jones recently noted, coronavirus and the general uncertainty of the times were living in have aided the spread of QAnon specifically.

But its not just QAnon. The strain of living in this particular time, with a dragging, devastating pandemic and a global uprising against police brutality and racial injustice, crashing together at the highest speed, has accelerated something thats been going on for years. Call it the conspiracy singularity: the place where many conspiracy communities are suddenly meeting and merging, a melting pot of unimaginable density. UFO conspiracy theorists and QAnon fans are advocating for drinking a bleach solution promoted by anti-vaxxers. QAnon groups and Reopen America groups alike promoted Plandemic , a film clip jam-packed with conspiratorial claims about the causes and spread of COVID. The Freedom Angels, an anti-vaccine group based in California, are among the many such groups joining anti-lockdown protests, using language that feels heavily drawn from the Patriot movement: They're calling stay-at-home orders tyranny, addressing their followers as Patriots, and positioning themselves as a new civil rights movements. (They urged people to burn their facemasks on July 4th, adding, floridly: Join millions of Americans on Independence Day as we show all these BLUE STATE GOVERNORS, SWAMP DOCS, and DEEP STATE RATS how we feel about their latest ORDERS, DICTATES and MANDATES to wear our muzzles again.)

More mainstream internet stars, as several outlets have noted, have also been drawn in: Lifestyle influencers are promoting COVID conspiracy theories, while the virality-seeking teens of TikTok are discovering a new obsession with Pizzagate. Sex trafficking conspiracy theoriesall of which are tinged with Pizzagate and QAnon influencesseem to have an especially broad appeal: Recently, a pair of Arizona influencers promoted a baseless rumor that the furniture company Wayfair was trafficking children.

The trend towards a kind of disturbing unity is distilled in the hashtag #Covid911, backed by a lot of powerful players in both anti-vaccine and QAnon circles. It holds that what were living throughthe pandemic and the protests against police brutality alikeis all a massive hoax, designed to sway not just the 2020 elections but usher in the New World Order. Not long ago, Joe M., a major QAnon promoter, released a video, which is still up on multiple platforms even as its marked as false information, calling the pandemic, the protests, and, of course, the push for nationwide mail-in voting all part of a coordinated irregular warfare insurgency with multiple aims, perpetrated by the Deep State. The nine-minute clip throws in a dizzying cocktail of claims touching on virtually every conspiracy theory of the current moment, managing to claim that the murder of George Floyd was mysterious and not what it seemed, that social distancing was perhaps a pretext to halt grand juries so that President Obama couldnt be investigated for spying on the Trump campaign, and, of course, that violent paramilitary group Antifa had been given free rein by Democratic mayors to wreak havoc on city streets.

COVID-19 is being sold as a natural event, Joe M. intoned, over grim violin music and a shot of Nancy Pelosi taking a knee in kente cloth. But we see now it is an attempt by enemies of humanity to hold onto power. After November, they stand to lose it all. But they will do everything to keep the crisis alive, and the people in fear.

The last minute of the clip features shots of news reports about a feared second wave of coronavirus. The implication is that that, too, is part of the program to keep us afraid, and shouldnt be acknowledged or believed.

People contain multitudes, and our ability to believe in several conspiracy theories at once is nothing new. Weve seen hints of a conspiracy singularity before, most memorably in the worlds of Milton William Cooper, the author of the dense, chaotic, and totally unreadable conspiracy classic Behold a Pale Horse.

Cooperbefore he died in a shootout with sheriffs deputy trying to arrest him for aggravated assaultwas successful in assembling a broad coalition of anti-government zealots. Behold a Pale Horse claimed to draw on his military service in the Vietnam War to expose a variety of evil deeds perpetrated by those who wanted to bring about a New World Order.

But Cooper also successfully weaved in UFO conspiracy theoriesthat the U.S. military shot down mysterious craft to capture alien technology, for instanceas well as medical ones, including claims that both AIDS and Hepatitis B were bioweapons loosed on the public by the CDC. As Cooper biographer Marc Jacobson noted, some of these theories gained a lot of credence among Black Americans and in the hip-hop community.

Behold a Pale Horse became a surprising mainstay across a lot of different communities, one of the only things youd be just as likely to find in an Afrocentric bookshop in New York as at a militia rally merch table. It showed that UFO researchers and heavily armed self-proclaimed patriots had some kind of common language and view of the world, or at least places where their worlds overlapped. One devoted fan of Coopers radio show was Timothy McVeigh, who went on to bomb the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. Author and political scientist Michael Barkun notes in his book 2003 A Culture of Conspiracy that McVeigh also developed a fascination with UFOs around the same time, visiting Area 51 a year before he perpetrated the bombing. On death row, Barkun writes, McVeigh obsessively watched the film Contact, about a brave government scientist chosen to make contact with extraterrestrials.

Conspiracy theories that the government is hiding what it knows about aliens, or the existence of a secret strawman bank account assigned to each U.S. citizen, live in the same place, theoretically speaking. In his book, Barkun referred to these realms as the domain of stigmatized knowledge.

That domain, as we have seen, he wrote, Is made up of rejected, outdated or ignored knowledge claims, regardless of subject matter. It contains material drawn from revisionist history, pseudoscience, alternative medicine, occultism, new and alternative religions and political sectarianism. Despite these differences of focus, all share certain overarching similarities: the disdain or disinterest of mainstream institutions, along with the common outsider status conferred by that disdain or disinterest, and a consequent suspicion of the institutions that have excluded them.

Barkuns book is broadly about the approaching conspiracy singularity, focused especially on the places where far-right, anti-government, and UFO circles had started to merge. And the same fusions Barkun observed in the late 80s and early 90s, between far-right conspiracy theorists and UFO believers, could also be seen within the 9/11 truth movement. Conspiracy theories about 9/11 brought together the military-industrial complex-critical left and the Alex Jones-tinged right, as well as what Barkun called the prophecies of Nostradmus, UFOs and conspiracy theories about the Illuminati. The bedfellows were strange indeed: As a profile of Alex Jones from 2011 observed, It turns out that the world of paranoia is round, and 9/11, with its billowing smoke and miles of video and a cast of thousands, is the terra incognita where left and right meet, fusing sixties countercultural distrust with the dont-tread-on-me variety.

In other words, alliances and overlaps are common, and not new. Theres always been cross-pollination, Michael Wood told VICE News. Wood has a PhD from the University of Kent and is an expert in conspiracy psychology. Along with his co-authors Karen Douglas and Robbie Sutton, he published a 2012 paper exploring the phenomenon of people who simultaneously believe in conflicting conspiracy theories: that Princess Diana is alive and was killed by MI6, for example, or that Osama Bin Laden both died before the U.S. military raided his compound and is still alive after those same military forces supposedly killed him.

The ability to believe two things at onceeven completely contradictory thingsis based on an underlying level of "higher order thinking, the paper argued, an overriding belief that can make even conflicting ideas make sense. Simply put, it's the centralized belief that conspiracies and hidden deceptions underpin the world and guide human events.

The idea that authorities are engaged in motivated deception of the public would be a cornerstone of conspiracist thinking due to its centrality in conspiracy theories, the authors wrote. Someone who believes in a significant number of conspiracy theories would naturally begin to see authorities as fundamentally deceptive, and new conspiracy theories would seem more plausible in light of that belief.

This being so, it's still true that conspiracy communities used to have some degree of separation. Their conventions were held in different hotel ballrooms, and targeted different audiences geographically and socially. Conspiracy theories were spread in newsletters and in-person meetings; they were narrowly targeted and often somewhat underground, part of a legitimately fringe and countercultural narrative.

But now the internet is the largest hotel ballroom of them all, and the novel coronavirus pandemic has forced a lot of people into a set of universalizing life circumstances. Were all trying to make sense of the same massive global event, which seems to drive an urge towards a grand unified theory of suspicion. And with everyone using the same global platforms, conspiracy communities seem to influence and inflect each other far more rapidly. What we have today is more of a mass, a merge of conspiracy theories combining in ways that make their individual contours harder to make out.

For some people invested in multiple conspiratorial beliefs or communities, Wood said, the evidence youve based your beliefs on is more like a negative argument, what you believe didnt happen. The actual conspiracy theories themselves arent that important, he added; they are really just manifestations of this underlying suspicion and mistrust.

That can take on some odd forms. In a 1954 study cited by Wood, Theodor Adorno found that German anti-Semites tended to believe that Jews were both too withdrawn from mainstream society and overly eager to participate in it. The higher order thinking at work was anti-Semitism and every negative belief derived from that, even when they didnt logically cohere.

Similarly, Wood wrote, in more modern conspiracy theories, distrust of official narratives may be so strong that many alternative theories are simultaneously endorsed in spite of any contractions between them.

Today, alternative theories abound: that the coronavirus pandemic is both a hoax and a dangerous bioweapon unleashed by China; that Tom Hanks is deadexecuted for being part of the pedophile Deep Stateand alive in witness protection; that he is dead and replaced by a body double. All these theories have been promoted by the same guy, a QAnon fan named Tommy G.

At the same time that the conspiracy singularity starts to take shape, were seeing a distinct collapse between the fringe and the center. Nowhere is that more visible than in the increasing prominence of QAnon in relatively mainstream Republican politics. As of July, the left-leaning organization Media Matters has found 63 current and former Congressional candidates who are open and enthusiastic Q fans, some of whom, like Mary Joe Rae Perkins in Oregon and Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia, have already won their primaries. (To make it to Congress, Greene still has to defeat the second-place winner, John Cowan, in an August 11 runoff election, and is facing significant condemnation from the state GOP.)

Another useful idea referred to by Barkun, the author of Culture of Conspiracy, is the cultic milieu, a term coined in the 1970s by the British sociologist Colin Campbell, a sort of cultural underground, Barkun wrote, thats made up of a variety of rejected knowledge disdained by the mainstream. The cultic milieu, Barkun wrote, is wary of all claims to authoritative judgment, and receptive to all forms of revisionism, whether in history, religion, science or politics.

Its not a stretch to see how that domain of stigmatized knowledge extends to how people process current and ongoing events, how groups of people with seemingly nothing to bind them together on the surface might find themselves seeking explanation, order and meaning in the same places.

In fact, theres been language for this phenomenon for a long time. People deeply embedded in the overlapping worlds of conspiracy theory tend to refer to themselves as being part of the truth community. And as its members come to a new and mutually reinforcing view of just what that truth is, the rest of us would do well to pay attention to just what it is.

For the First Time, Scientists Fully Sequenced the Human X Chromosome – Singularity Hub

The sequencing of the human genome was one of the greatest scientific feats of the past century, but its a little-known fact that its still a work in progress with considerable gaps. New research suggests we could be just months away from finally finishing the job.

Nearly two decades after the Human Genome Project released the first map of our DNA, there are still large sections that are a mystery to us. Scientists have been slowly filling in the gaps, but certain portions that feature repetitive sequences going on for millions of base pairs have long been seen as intractable.

Thats because most common gene sequencing technologies create short snippets of DNA that then have to be stitched together. When applied to these highly repetitive sections it becomes almost impossible to distinguish the pieces, so putting them back together in the right order is extremely difficult.

Imagine having to reconstruct a jigsaw puzzle, senior author Adam Phillippy, from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), said in a press release. If you are working with smaller pieces, each contains less context for figuring out where it came from, especially in parts of the puzzle without any unique clues, like a blue sky. The same is true for sequencing the human genome. Until now, the pieces were too small, and there was no way to put the hardest parts of the genome puzzle together.

But that is now changing. In a paper published last week in Nature, the researchers describe how they used a cutting-edge approach known as nanopore sequencing to tackle some of the previously inscrutable sections of the genome and produce the first-ever gapless sequence of the X chromosome.

Nanopore sequencing works by passing DNA molecules through a tiny hole and measuring the change in an electric current running across the holes surface to work out the sequence of base pairs in the molecules. Unlike previous approaches, its able to create ultra-long DNA sequences.

That was enough to fill many of the gaps in the genome, but a region known as the centromere that encompasses roughly 3.1 million base pairs of highly repetitive sequences still presented a problem. Fortunately, the team was able to find idiosyncratic sequences that could act as markers to link together multiple long reads to span the entire centromere.

To ensure that the X chromosome was as accurate as possible, the researchers combined nanopore sequencing with results from a further two gold-standard sequencing technologies and approaches for mapping the genome. The result is more than 99.9 percent accurate, which is considered enough to call the sequence finished.

Filling the gaps in the human genome could prove invaluable for biomedical research. Were starting to find that some of these regions where there were gaps in the reference sequence are actually among the richest for variation in human populations, so weve been missing a lot of information that could be important to understanding human biology and disease, lead author Karen Miga, from the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, said in a press release.

And while the complete X chromosome is the pice de resistance of this paper, the team reports that they have applied their approach to the full genome and theyve managed to reconstruct several other chromosomes. They are aiming to produce a complete human genome by the end of this year.

What secrets lie in store in these hidden parts of the human genome remains to be seen, but uncovering them will be a major step towards humankind truly mastering our own biology.

Treasure8 adds Chris Cowart to its executive team as it renews pushing its tech to reduce food waste – TechCrunch

Chris Cowart, the longtime IDEO product designer, Singularity University faculty member and consultant to a variety of venture firms and tech projects, is joining the food preservation technology developer Treasure8 as its new chief innovation and strategy officer, according to a post on LinkedIn.

In the last three years food has come to the fore as a theme, said Cowart in an interview with TechCrunch. Cowart, who previously spent the majority of his time consulting on healthcare companies, became interested in food through a year spent as an advisor to X, the Alphabet subsidiary that develops technologies and companies focused on sustainability, connectivity and new computing paradigms.

At X, Cowart was looking at projects that would use artificial intelligence to accelerate circular economy projects and it was there that he began to focus on food waste. The gravity of the situation around Americas food waste and food insecurity in the country was driven home through Cowarts research, he said. We overproduce by double and we throw away 30% of our food, said Cowart. And in Santa Clara county one-in-six families are food insecure.

After completing his project at X, Cowart went to Treasure8 and was immediately pulled into strategy conversations, which led to him coming on board in June.

Unlike Apeel Sciences or Hazel Technologies, which have developed new preservative technologies to keep food fresh on store shelves (and raised several hundred million dollars), Treasure8s technology is a new spin on freeze-drying, which lets perishable foods hold their nutritional value while theyre used as ingredients, supplements or powders.

Brands can reform it with rehydration, or put it into their products or reuse pieces of the vegetables and fruits in their products. There are byproducts that you can break down and start to use to pull out their nutrients into probiotics and nutraceuticals, said Cowart.

He also thinks that Treasure8 could use its process to become a provider of biochar that can be applied in more sustainable agriculture techniques.

Treasure8 initially launched with a focus on food preservation, but quickly pivoted into working with hemp companies that wanted to work with the company to use more parts of the hemp plant in products. For now, Treasure8 is operating off of its pilot facility on Treasure Island, the man-made island in the San Francisco Bay which is currently the site of a multi-billion-dollar development project.

With its new innovation officer in tow, Treasure8 is now heading to market to raise a new round of financing, Cowart said. Targeting less than $50 million, the new round could help the company as Cowart starts to think longer term about ways that Treasure8s treatment process could contribute to the development of more functional foods.

Taking food waste streams to make products and ingredients and letting it be something useful rather than something that harms the environment, thats the interesting part, Cowart said of his role at the company. [And] if youre able to go from food security to nutritional security If you can powder vegetables, and make them into bits and food that are stable and affordable All of this nutrition feeds into the food as medicine and functional food. Were going to want to fight immunity and recover from viruses and were going to have to rebuild our food supply.

The automation revolution is happening now – ComputerWeekly.com

This is a guest blogpost by Jason Kingdon, Chairman & CEO of Blue Prism

And its raining RPA[Robotic Process Automation] IBMs announcement that they are acquiring a Brazilian Robotic Process Automation company comes just months after Microsofts acquisition of a Greek RPA vendor, and a period on from SAP acquiring a French RPA capability. If you have not spotted the pattern, you will.

Every single platform provider will need to offer automation out-of-the-box alongside their core offerings, for the simple reason that the product class offers the highest ROI of any business technology ever created. Now, that is not me from Blue Prism saying this, it is the London School of Economics and MIT.

The robotics revolution in manufacturing was said to have increased productivity in the 20th century by something like 50-fold; that is, by the year 2000 one person in manufacturing was achieving the work of 50 people.

Imagine employing 50 people for every one person you currently employ? How does that change your world? How do you think differently about what you do? Could you even imagine assigning that amount of work?

A new way of working

The same automation revolution is well under way in white-collar jobs and the service industry. It will have the same impact as the invention of the Internet; if you dont see that youre already out-of-date. It changes every aspect of the way work will take place in the service industry, the types of services that are offered, and the way technology is consumed. Work life will probably change more in the next 10 years than it has for the last 100 years. What does this look like?

The clich would be that all jobs are wiped out and there is nothing left for humans to do; in other words, Apocalypse Now (and then Brexit).

But, it wont be like that. For the businesses that have made the strategic commitment to Blue Prisms enterprise class automation platform, you see a similar pattern as to the one that occurred in manufacturing: expansion of services, higher rates of service quality, greater flexibility in working (effortless coping with Covid-19 lock-down and remote working) and most of all speed and scalability

The arrival of digital workers

Our Blue Prism Digital Worker is software that attempts to get as close to a human worker as we can. In other words it is a software robot an autonomous processing unit. It is not a script or a bot in fact the digital worker runs multiple scripts or bots marshalling these kinds of capabilities in large scale so as to automate any business processes (which may or may not include routine mundane tasks, and equally, may include sophisticated diagnostics that humans struggle with; like spotting money laundering, KYC [know your customer], or early signs of diabetes in a retina scan).

Like a human worker, the Blue Prism version of this concept is trained by a business user; and so the digital worker makes use of any tools and third-party technologies as it needs.

People ask is this intelligent systems or AI? Of course it is. In a very direct way. Just like a human, this technology aims at versatility at its core, and the abilities to use all technologies as they become available is crucial to its design. And by choice, necessity, or taste, the digital worker makes use of any novel, routine or classic machine learning or AI algorithm as is required for the task in hand. The whole point is that all of these technologies can be clipped together (with no code) according to what they are being trained to do.

A digital singularity

At the heart of this automation revolution is the fact that all systems can be made to interoperate through digital workers. It means that ancient systems from the birth of computing, to technologies just born, are now in scope. This imposes a post-legacy reality; everything that exists is legacy; or in our terms, a component or tool to be made use of.

This offers a form of digital singularity as an echo of technology singularity (the point at which humans can make a machine as smart as a human). The digital singularity refers to the point where all technology can be combined, as through a prism (if you will).

If all software becomes interoperable think how this changes the R&D landscape? And how business will start to consume technology. And the implied pace of change we are about to hit. The acceleration will be rapid and mind altering; propelling winners, in many cases companies you have never heard of, to fame and fortune, because the whole consumption profile is flexing and re-ordering.

Look at technology service businesses (like IBM), and they are akin to a giant form of human middleware, or mechanical Turk. It is like a digital sedan chair, a business carried by humans as it plods its progress this, in the age of the self-driving automobile. These are the areas that will change the fastest, as IBM has noted. The large human powered business service companies also look old fashioned in this new context, and these have only just been invented. They will need to pivot, as do all the main service providers, and this new revolution will make them better. Covid-19 and the current economic crisis will likely accelerate all these changes.

I should say, I already claim that any business processes worthy of the name (i.e. you want it to be repeatable and predictable) can be automated. So, buckle up.

Why The European Union Has Changed Forever – Worldcrunch

-Analysis-

PARIS Is the longest European summit in history also historic? The answer is yes.

Indeed, the European Union is now a state. Not a so-called superstate replacing the 27 member states that make it up, but a state that includes them. We could say that the EU is now 28 states: the 27 separately plus the 27 together as one. Finally, the European state represents Alexandre Dumas' famous saying from The Three Musketeers: "One for all, all for one." The novelty that allows us to recognize Europe as a state comes from the fact that the EU will issue treasury bonds to finance a brand new part of its budget, which it calls the "recovery plan," amounting to 750 billion euros.

This historic development of issuing European debt corresponds to a social demand with weak signals that have existed for several years. Even though European power and its leaders are the subject of mistrust as national powers and leaders have also been for the past 15 years Eurobarometer surveys indicate that Europeans want a European solution to the economic and geopolitical challenges that threaten us. And while the euro is the subject of permanent and legitimate debate, Europeans are now particularly attached to their common currency: In just 20 years, the euro has won the confidence of citizens and investors large and small and has established itself as the world's second reserve currency. In fact, the national recovery plans adopted in response to COVID-19, the colossal sum of which amounts to 2.3 trillion euros, are only possible because of the guarantee of the European Central Bank and its worldwide credibility.

The advent of the European state is part of the evolution of the state in Europe. This history is often reduced to the rise of European nation-states following the French Revolution. However, this story spans more than 10 centuries. It includes many forms of statehood, and a plurality of states, each with its own singularity, as specific and different as, for example, the Holy Roman Empire, the Republic of Venice, the Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom, Portugal or the United Provinces.

The still-young EU could be described as a "baroque state." Baroque, the great European artistic movement, is set in opposition to classicism through its circumvention of rules and subverting of forms, mixing genres and resorting to the exception. This is the case of the EU, which escapes the traditional classification of political systems as territorial state entities and is distinguished by its novel singularity. Based on state cultures inherited from a long history and a fragmented political geography, contemporary Europeans are inventing the "mutuality" of sovereignty.

Europeans can now shelve the ideological debate on whether the existence of the EU is relevant.

Negotiations on the terms and conditions of the plan are thus not limited to discussions between heads of government at the European Council. The agreement will then have to be voted on by the 27 national parliaments, themselves networked with the European Parliament and the parliaments of local states, such as the Belgian or Spanish communities and the German Lnder. This "mutualization," or exchange of reciprocity of sovereignty, is democratic: It is deliberate, voluntary and negotiated, in contrast to the empires and conquests by kings and then nations of the past two millennia. Europeans do not form a nation but a society. For the past few decades they have been building a state that corresponds to this one: pluralist, unprecedented and forward-looking.

By this metric, the four-day, four-night series of debates are the manifestation of national governments becoming tremendously civilized in building this European state. They have become, together with the European Parliament, which is the direct expression of European society, actors of a deliberative democracy with its majority, its opposition (the so-called 'frugal' countries) and its compromises. From now on, Europeans can shelve the ideological debate on whether the existence of the EU is relevant, and focus on the citizen's debate that confronts the real issue: Are we satisfied with the political choices and public policies made by the European "government?"

5 technologies and 4 job roles that can help save humanity and the planet – India Today

It is increasingly apparent in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that we are living in the digital era, as we enter the age of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and the Singularity. The digitized world is using social media, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to reimagine the future of communication and work.

Automation of transportation such as drones and electric vehicles are becoming much more necessary given the accelerated rate of innovation. Quantum Computing is the next generation of supercomputers that will change everything, and will accelerate how we use data to make the decisions that once seemed impossible possible.

As we move into a post-Covid world, can these technological innovations help save humanity and the planet?

Heres how these exponential technologies can help humankind identify, measure, track, and sustain the natural balance of non-renewable resources on our planet.

1. Life-saving drones: Drones that were once used to take lives by the military, can now be used to save lives while protecting the world's wildlife and forests.

By delivering medication in hard to reach places affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, and saving wildlife by monitoring poachers that hunt and kill elephants, drones can track illegal activities.

Forest conservationists can monitor wildfires and retard the collateral damage these fires cause, and even replant trees to help negate the negative effects of climate change.

2. Remote sensors: Remote sensing tech can help a great deal in arranging, observing, and assessing the environmental impact on the ground with extraordinary accuracy.

For example, sensors have given WWF access to the development of extractive industries in environmentally delicate territories, including some of the world heritage sites to help protect such monuments as the Taj Mahal.

3. Thermal imaging and LIDAR: Thermal imaging cameras can give you virtual control to let officers for example get hold of poachers that hunt endangered species at record rates and dissuade a lot more from even entering the territory given they have a way to capture them in the act.

4. Blockchain for commodity markets: The advances in blockchain innovation have the potential to be game changers given the ledger technology and transparency of tracking every moment of the source of a transaction. For instance, it can inform buyers about the sourcing journey of their fish and other horticultural produce.

5. Quantum computing: This is probably the most disruptive technology in the next decade as it has the potential to solve any problem with extraordinary solutions and revolutionize how computers operate with 10x ability to do anything from find solutions to seemingly impossible diseases to creating a whole new way in which humanity experiences civilization.

While scientists and environmentalists are in search of new cutting-edge technologies to help save the planet, it is the next generation and youth that will make this new reality come to fruition.

Digital biology is growing enormously and so is the demand for professionals with knowledge in data science and disruptive technology.

The increasing importance of a career in the future of innovation and technology is witnessing billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett invest their money in companies generating employment related to science and the environment for the next 10 years while companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Google invest in research and development around AI and AR/VR technology.

Several future professions that could help us protect and save the planet?

1. Conservation Scientist: Taking care of life on land including the quality of forests, national parks, ranges, and other natural resources will serve a vital role in society.

Securing the wild forests, improving natural surroundings for wildlife, promoting biodiversity, encouraging public recreation, and controlling wild-fires are all critical roles for the future of our world.

2. Geoscientist: This profession includes the study of the planets structure, history, and natural resources. Geoscientists work with environmental researchers and carry out their responsibilities both from the lab and in the field.

Travel can take these professionals to some wonders of the world like active volcanoes or the top of Mt. Everest.

3. Hydrologist: Water will be more valuable than oil in the future. Using their skill of water quality and accessibility, hydrologists study water development.

Their time is commonly spent between working in the field where they may wind up swimming into lakes and streams to gather water samples or observing the monitoring equipment, and research labs where they break down the information and model their discoveries to protect our water sources and life in the rivers and under the sea.

4. Environmental Scientist: Their expertise in physics, chemistry, and biology help them progress in the direction of understanding the planets ecological issues.

Research in the field to examine the contamination of the earth brought about by humans can promote measures to create a sustainable way of life for the future.

---

Whether it is to save an endangered species or master a renewable resource or protect the planet from the adversities of production and supply, a career in these fields can rightfully use innovation and technology for the greater good in order to transform our world for a better future.

John Boyega Says No Thank You to More Star Wars Because Three Movies as Finn Is Enough – IndieWire

John Boyega shared with fans on social media that he is putting the Star Wars franchise behind him and eager to move on from his character Finn. Responding to fan demand to see Finn pop up in the next Star Wars movie (via Variety), Boyega wrote, Lol no thank you. Ive moved on. The actor added to another fan, Im not into playing one role for too long. I have more to offer than that. Thats all. Boyega played Finn in three Star Wars films between 2015 and 2019.

While Boyega has been outspoken about his issues with the Star Wars franchise, he stressed the only reason hes disinterested in returning as Finn in the future is because hes played the character for so long. The actor said hes not against reprising characters as long as theres been enough time in between playing the role. One role hed be keen on returning to is Moses in Attack the Block. As Boyega told a fan, I havent played Moses in over a decade. Id love to revisit him. Now he is a badass.

With no more Star Wars being planned for his future, Boyegas work in last Decembers The Rise of Skywalker will be his final outing in the franchise. While critical reviews for the tentpole were largely negative, Boyega stood by the film on social media amid backlash. Writing to one fan who called The Rise of Skywalker an embarrassment, the actor responded,Embarrassing? LOL you wish. Very fulfilling, some disappointments but yet not that big of a deal. Everyone has moved on.

That Boyega found Rise of Skywalker to be a fulfilling experience suggested he liked the project more than his previous Star Wars movie, the Rian Johnson-directed The Last Jedi. In an interview with Hypebeastjust before the December 2019 release of Rise of Skywalker, Boyega said he disagreed with many of the choices Johnson made in The Last Jedi script.

The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if Im being honest Id say that was feeling a bit iffy for me, Boyega said. I didnt necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and thats something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about, and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.

With Star Wars behind him, Boyega has several new projects lined up for the future. Not only does he have a role in Steve McQueens Small Axe anthology, but Boyega also has a leading role in the new film Naked Singularity.
