Boeing’s big week includes first-quarter results and government aid deadline – CNBC

A slew of upcomingBoeing announcements aim to calm investor nerves and set the stage for future growth much like when Dave Calhoun was named as the aerospace giant's next CEO.

In the next week, Boeing will hold its annual meeting, report first-quarter results and face the application deadline for a multi-billion dollar aid package from the federal government.

Those familiar with the discussions of Boeing's leadership said Calhoun is planning to show investors the company will build two financial bridges to the future: A near-term one focused on cutting near-term losses brought on by the coronavirus and a longer-term bridge to deal with fewer orders for commercial airplanes and a smaller airline industry.

The question for investors is how much it will cost Boeing to build those bridges and where will the money come from. The growing uncertainty over possible losses in the first quarter and beyond is a principal reason shares of Boeing are down more than 50% since Calhoun became CEO in January.

Calhoun has made it clear he and his leadership team are preparing the company for a future that will look far different than two years ago, when commercial airplanes orders were soaring and production rates climbed to record highs.

In a message sent to Boeing employees in early April, Calhoun wrote, "We will need to balance the supply and demand accordingly as the industry goes through the recovery process for years to come."

That means production cuts in the commercial airplane division. Boeing executives tell CNBC the company is expected to outline new targets for wide-body plane production, including a new, lower monthly build rate for the 787 Dreamliner.

Given slower production schedules in the future, Boeing will also likely announce plans to trim its payroll, according to those familiar the company's plans. The payroll cut could be as much as 10% of the company's 160,000 employees, with some of the reduction expected to come through early retirement packages and natural attrition. Still, given the size of the expected payroll cut, Boeing could also layoff many employees.

Wall Street knows Boeing has to restructure, and for the most part, that expectation is now built into shares of the Dow component. What remains unclear is exactly how much it will cost the company to right size its commercial airplane business. More importantly, it is also unclear how Boeing will build up the liquidity needed to get through a second and third quarter with limited revenue.

After lobbying Washington to earmark as much as $60 billion in government aid for the aerospace industry, Boeing has yet to say if it will apply for some of that money. That will likely change this week since the Treasury Department has setMay 1 as the deadline for companies to apply for some of the billions set aside for "businesses critical to maintaining national security." While the application does not specifically list the companies it is designed to help, this is the Treasury program designed to provide billions to Boeing.

The question is what terms the Treasury secretary will set for lending that money and whether Boeing will be willing to accept them or decide to seek billions in the private sector. Earlier this month, the Treasury Department received stock warrants worth tens of millions of dollars from airlines that borrowed from the federal government.

In late March, Calhoun indicated Boeing may pass on government loans if it requires giving the Treasury Department a stake in the company. Since then, Boeing executives have told CNBC that Calhoun's comments have been misinterpreted as a definitive line drawn in the sand. Those executives say the Boeing leadership team has not made any final decisions on government aid and the determining factor will be the terms that are ultimately negotiated with the Treasury Department.

The DOJ Antitrust Divisions (DOJ) recent challenge to the United Technologies (UTC)/Raytheon (RTN) merger highlights a few key considerations for antitrust reviews of aerospace and defense industry transactions. The case is a useful illustration of important principles applicable to this unique industry.

First, the case highlights that defense product markets will be narrowly defined based on the specific product application, and suppliers of the same type of system may be in different antitrust markets if they supply the system for different applications (e.g., aircraft versus ground vehicle). Second, the case shows that theories of harm from vertical integration are flexible, and they frequently focus on whether a transaction will create the incentive and ability for a company to use its control over one capability to foreclose competition in another product market. Vertical issues often arise in the aerospace and defense industry because of the frequent subcontracting and teaming relationships among firms at different levels of the supply chain in order to create the highly complex products demanded by military and other government customers.

This is the first aerospace and defense merger review since the DOJ and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released their new draft Vertical Merger Guidelines in January, and it provides a useful practical application of some of the key principles and theories outlined in those guidelines.

Aerospace and defense product markets are narrowly defined.The agencies define relevant antitrust product markets based on demand side substitution. If one product can readily be substituted for another to serve the same application, then they are likely to be in the same antitrust product market. On the other hand, products that may initially appear quite similar but have unique characteristics that make them suitable for different applications are likely not going to be in the same relevant product market.

DOJ evaluated military GPS receivers as part of the UTC/RTN transaction. DOJ concluded that [m]ilitary GPS systems for aviation/maritime applications and military GPS systems for ground applications (e.g., tanks or trucks) serve different functions and cannot be substituted for one another. For example, DOJ noted that there are different power, performance and form factor requirements for aviation/maritime GPS systems and ground GPS systems. Customers therefore cannot substitute an aviation/maritime GPS system for a ground GPS system (or vice versa) without sacrificing important functionality. In short, DOJ found that the requirements for a ground GPS system were significantly different than the requirements for an aviation/maritime system. While both may need to provide location information using GPS signals in a secure environment, they are not substitutable. DOJ likewise challenged the transaction in airborne military radios, finding that military radios have different requirements than commercial radios, and airborne radios have different requirements and capabilities than ground or naval radios.

DOJs application of the market definition principles in the Horizontal Merger Guidelines appears to be fairly straightforward in this case, but it is a useful reminder of how those principles are applied in the aerospace and defense industry. Market definition is a highly fact-driven exercise, and when the products involved have a common base technology but are then specialized for usage in different applications, those different applications likely will be found to represent separate relevant product markets.

Theories of anticompetitive effects from vertical combinations are flexible.The draft Vertical Merger Guidelines published by the FTC and DOJ earlier this year provide insight into the antitrust enforcers theories of harm from vertical integration. Vertical integration that forecloses access to inputs or customers and either raises rivals costs or, at the extreme, precludes their ability to compete at all, are the core theories of vertical harm. Given the ubiquity of subcontracting and teaming relationships, aerospace and defense industry transactions frequently raise vertical antitrust issues. The DOJs challenge to the UTC/RTN transaction demonstrates the flexibility of vertical theories of competitive harm.

The key issues in a vertical theory include whether the merger creates the incentive and the ability to withhold or condition access to key inputs in a way that not only hurts rivals, but also harms competition more broadly in the market. The DOJs UTC/RTN complaint describes its theory of competitive harm arising from the combination of RTNs focal plane array and electro optical (EO)/infrared (IR) payload business with UTCs large space-based optics business. According to the DOJs complaint, certain types of spacecraft have imaging payloads that include two key elements: The components of an EO/IR reconnaissance satellite payload are advanced versions of the components found in consumer digital cameras: an optical systema lens or mirrorfocuses light onto an electronic detector, known as a focal plane array (FPA), which converts light to digital images for transmission via radio signals. Optical systems and FPAs are critical inputs in EO/IR reconnaissance satellite payloads.

DOJ alleged that RTN has benefited from decades of investment in its technologies funded by the US government or prime contractors, and is the leading supplier of FPAs for capturing EO images (visible light) and one of two leaders for IR applications. DOJ alleged that UTC is one of two suppliers of large optical systems.

DOJ alleged the combination of UTC and RTN would result in several anticompetitive effects.

Theory 1. RTN could use its dominant FPA position to force the use of the UTC large optical systems.

There may be applications for which RTNs FPA must be used, because the payload will process visible (EO) light where only RTN has fully developed capabilities, according to DOJ.

If RTNs FPA must be used on a payload, UTC/RTN could condition access to or pricing of the RTN FPA on a customer also using the UTC large optical system, even if it might not offer the best quality or lowest price for the application.

DOJ notes that the merger creates a change in incentive by combining the FPA provider and large optics provider under common control.

Theory 2. UTC could use its dominant large optical position to force customers to use RTNs EO/IR payload capability.

There may be applications for which UTCs large optical system must be used as part of a payload because the government customer directs its use.

If UTCs large optical system must be used on a payload, UTC/RTN could withhold access to that optical system from its rivals, or increase the prices charged for that optical system, either of which would reduce competition at the EO/IR payload level.

Thus, there are two different theories of harm created by the vertical combination of RTNs FPAs and UTCs large optical systems. Under one theory, UTC/RTN could use its dominant position as an FPA supplier to force a customer to take the UTC optical system. Under the second theory, RTN could withhold access to the UTC optical system in order to disadvantage companies seeking to compete with RTN as a payload supplier (combining the FPA and the optical system).These two different theories show the inherent flexibility in vertical antitrust analysis. Both hinge upon the merger changing the incentives, either to select a component or to supply a component, from what applies prior to the transaction. If the DOJ or FTC (which also performs antitrust reviews of aerospace and defense transactions) determines that the merger creates the incentive and ability for the merged company to execute this type of strategy, the agency will seek to eliminate the potential anticompetitive harm arising from that aspect of the transaction.DOJ under the Trump administration has required structural relief, meaning a divestiture, to resolve vertical concerns. In the UTC/RTN matter, having found that combining the UTC large optical system capability with the RTN FPA and payload business created competitive concerns, DOJ required a divestiture of the UTC large optical system business. That relief would maintain the premerger competitive dynamic in which the UTC large optical system business was not owned by the same company that owned the RTN FPA and payload business. Historically, DOJ and FTC have resolved vertical issues with restrictions on the post-merger companys conduct (i.e., a behavioral remedy). For example, FTC imposed a behavioral remedy to resolve its vertical concerns with the Northrop Grumman / Orbital ATK transaction. However,, the pendulum has swung toward DOJ requiring a divestiture of one of the businesses creating the vertical concern (i.e., a structural remedy).

DOJs press release announcing the settlement noted that [t]hese horizontal and vertical concerns are resolved by the Divisions structural remedy, which includes the divestiture of three separate business units. This is consistent with the policy announced by Assistant Attorney General Delrahim when he took office in 2017. In one of his first actions, AAG Delrahim stated a new DOJ policy: that it would no longer accept behavioral remedies limiting a merged companys conduct but instead would insist on structural remedies (i.e., divestitures) to resolve any competitive issues created by M&A transactions.The UTC/RTN merger does not make new law or announce new legal principles, but it serves as a useful example of the application of antitrust principles in the context of aerospace and defense merger reviews.

Coronavirus and fitness: How VR games got me to exercise – Los Angeles Times

Like a New Years resolution that was never going to be kept, I woke up on March 13 with grand plans: Every morning while under stay-at-home orders I would work out for at least 30 minutes. Then I decided to start that on March 14. Soon it was the first week of April. Turns out Im pretty good at excuses, all under the guise of self-care.

So I did the next best thing: I turned to video games.

Such a statement isnt as odd as it may have been in 2007, when Nintendos Wii Fit was all the rage. Working out, after all, has become gameified, be it through our apps that keep track of our steps or higher-end, screen-based equipment such as a Peloton bike. And Nintendos recent Ring Fit Adventure, which is hard to find and going for sometimes double or triple its $79.99 prince on eBay, is an absolute joy. An adventure game that encourages us to mix cardio activities with a Pilates-like ring, Ring Fit Adventure is cheerily encouraging as we do battle with a mean dragon.

I had been away from the game for a couple of months, but Ring Fit Adventure is a surprisingly adept personal trainer. Many of the upper-body exercises are completed by pulling the ring in and out, allowing it to mimic the activities one would normally associates with a resistance band. But it also encourages us to take breaks, and if we miss a day or two it dials down the difficulty. I appreciate its illusion of awareness and that its less rigid than throwing on a video.

And yet there is one ever-so-slight negative with Ring Fit Adventure. Its not the fault of the game so much as my mind. It lives on the Nintendo Switch, which is also home to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And while I can speak only for myself, of course, Animal Crossing has been a savior when it comes to easing any anxieties or worries during this time. Its pull is irresistible.

Home fitness, of course, faces many hurdles, as anyone with a bike or treadmill that most often gets used as a place to dry clothes can attest. Should I simply resign myself to gaining back the 30 pounds I lost last year and just worry about it after the pandemic ends? That was the path I was on, at least until my work-at-home desk (its a couch) sent my lower back into a red-alert panic mode.

I was going to need to find a way to move. And right now, if it werent for virtual reality, I probably wouldnt be getting any exercise.

Moving inside the headset has resulted in my most intense workouts in months, so much so that Im planning to cancel my gym membership on the other end of this. While Im far from the first to discover that virtual reality is pretty great space for working out, Im somewhat frustrated it took me this long to realize it. After all, some of the lightsaber moments in Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series certainly could work up a sweat,

Beat Saber" is probably the most recognizable VR workout, having made it to late-night television and boasting partnerships with a number of major pop acts. Its good to get the body moving and the heart rate up. With neon cubes flying at me every Tuesday and Thursday morning, when my schedule goes according to plan, Im hopping around my kitchen and swinging wildly only what I see is a tunnel with a cyberpunk aesthetic. I could easily spend 40 minutes in this world.

That I could use a game like Beat Saber for a cardio workout was a bit of a surprise to me, only because the one drawback of VR is that I cant see myself. Yet that turned out to be the greatest advantage of VR workouts. I dont want to see myself. Even alone in front of my TV with Ring Fit Adventure I am self-consciously aware that I am moving like a weirdo in my family room. VR allows me to get out of my own head. In other words, when I cant see myself, Im not embarrassing myself.

To exercise, I use the Oculus Quest, which is sold out. But it is cordless and at a price of either $400 or $500 runs cheaper than some high-end fitness equipment. That being said, its primary use has been entertainment rather than fitness, although that may be changing, at least if the just-released Supernatural from local tech firm Within catches on.

Supernatural is designed specifically for working-out in VR, and its been destroying me in the best possible way. Unlike in a more game-like experience, even one that encourages swinging and movement, Supernatural gives you a virtual coach and places you in postcard-worthy visual landscapes. Think New Guinea islands, the Grand Canyon or Ethopias Erta Ale volcano.

I especially like the volcanoes, as the backdrop allows me to pretend Im training to be a Jedi. But this isnt National Geographic; the settings, while beautiful, work largely to get you removed from remembering youre in your own home.

The movements are similar to other rhythm games, such as the aforementioned Beat Saber, where the virtual foam-like swords are used to swing at circular objects coming our way. Supernatural also throws in plenty of triangles, which are designed to get you to pull off squats or lunges. Because of my back issues, Ive worked with physical therapists, so I know how to modify some of these movements to work within my abilities.

While Supernatural will require a $19-per-month subscription, it has succeeded in getting me as sweaty and sore as when I did morning boot camps. Im not someone to give certified fitness advice I sometimes eat Swedish Fish candies for dinner, after all but a benefit of Supernatural is the presence of coaches, filmed so they appear in front of you. The full 360 movement afforded in VR helps make sure Im moving in the way Im instructed.

What left me most surprised, however, is that after a few days in Supernatural my arms felt as if I had done 100 push-ups. I thought this was an odd sensation, considering I was only holding the Oculus controllers rather than weights. But Within worked with professional coaches to guide players to behave in way that uses their full range of motion rather than attempting to simply become good at the game.

Though the app will supposedly adjust placement of its objects based on how well were moving, I havent attempted to fully game the system, so to speak. I just know that after a couple of weeks, Supernatural is still challenging me. Within, says co-founcer Aaron Koblin, found that most rhythm games, as players improve, actually result in worse workouts, as they are understanding how to move to win rather than how to burn calories.

That is not the same objective as creating something thats focused on large healthy movements follow through with your swings the kinds of things you get more from the success of the sport than success of the game, says Koblin.

After two weeks, as Supernatural has succeeded in getting me off the couch, my back pain has decreased. At the end of these stay-at-home orders, I hope to emerge a fully trained Jedi. Thats how this works, right?

Its a futuristic landscape, a maze of empty rooms with soaring ceilings and glowing, neon-lit floors, everything bathed in an 80s-era palette of screaming-pink, orange and lime green. Random objects a deconstructed 1967 Mustang, glass cubes brimming with swirly paint markings, delicate pencil drawings of butterflies and roosters float by.

But, wait. Disrobed of the plastic, padded headset, we are actually in a gleaming Eagle Rock warehouse, a former auto body repair shop-turned-artists studio, and Tolch is perched behind a computer console, beaming.

His piece, Glass Bottom Brain, is an interactive, virtual reality artwork meaning viewers don a high-resolution headset and descend into an immersive, 3-D digital environment in which they can navigate through bits and pieces of Tolchs subconscious. He created the piece with expensive state-of-the-art computer equipment, but Tolch didnt invest a cent. The project was paid for, organized by and later exhibited by Art Reality Studio, a nonprofit organization thats outfitting contemporary artists with VR technology toward pushing creative boundaries. It sees itself as an incubation lab for cutting-edge creativity and asks the question: What if?

What happens when artists are given cutting-edge technology, no strings attached?, says ARS co-founder Frank Masi. We wanna see how far theyll take it.

The organization, which formed about 2 years ago, is a later-in-life project from Masi, a 77-year-old photographer and retired theme park attraction project director and Brent Imai, a 61-year-old former sports television executive and entrepreneur.

Technology is such an important part of society, says Imai. It can be really, really good, it can be really, really bad. We thought: Lets have artists weigh in on that discussion.

Virtual reality technology has been around for decades and frequently pops up in video games, at theme parks and in other experiential entertainment, often located at malls. Fine artists have been slower to adopt the technology, which is expensive and can be daunting to learn how to use for those who arent computer-savvy. But thats started to change.

Artists Paul McCarthy, Jordan Wolfson and Jon Rafman showed VR works in the 2017 Venice Biennale, 2017 Whitney Biennial and 2016 Berlin Biennale, respectively; Laurie Anderson and Taiwanese new media artist Hsin-Chien Huang showed new VR installations during the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Heat around VR has caught on in the museum world: former Moderna Museet director Daniel Birnbaum left his job at the Stockholm institution last year to head up the London-based art and tech studio Acute Art, which has created VR works with Jeff Koons and Marina Abramovic. Even in the public art realm, L.A. artist Nancy Baker Cahill displayed VR works on digital billboards along Sunset Boulevard in 2018.

And during the coronavirus outbreak, as culture hubs are shuttered and hungry art lovers shelter at home, virtual reality art-viewing at museums and art-buying at galleries has taken off.

Virtual reality, however, is still a mystery to much of the contemporary art establishment and theres still a slew of unanswered questions about how to exhibit, collect and monetize VR art. Is there a collecting market for it? How do you price the works? How would collectors display VR works in their homes? Are the works originals or part of a limited edition? Whats to prevent someone from reproducing or reselling a work made with software and code as opposed to paint and canvas? And, finally: What makes it art as opposed to computer programming?

LACMA curator Britt Salvesen, who organized the museums 3D: Double Vision exhibition last year, questions the longevity of VR artworks: How do you preserve, refresh and sustain such works when the hardware and software is inevitably always changing? And if you bought a VR work now, would you be able to watch it in 2025 would the systems still work?

Masi and Imai hope, if not to answer all of these questions, then to wade around in them for a while. The two met about four years ago at a Los Angeles County Museum of Art patron group event before hatching the idea for ARS. Their business model is not unlike that of the L.A.-based artists workshop and fine art lithography publisher Gemini G.E.L., which beginning in the 1960s and 70s facilitated experimentation among artists, exhibited and sold their work and helped fuel a nationwide printmaking revival in the process.

Instead of ink, paper and steel presses, however, ARS provides artists with VR rigs high-end computers outfitted with VR software, display monitors, headsets, wall sensors and remotes which run about $10,000 apiece. And ARS which hasnt sold anything yet and is funded by Masi and Imai (but for one equipment donation valuing $5,000) says it doesnt intend to take a cut of sales of the works, which are creator-owned.

Its really a philanthropic thing for us, Imai says. I gave a little bit of money to [local museums] but I realized: They dont really need my little money, Im not Eli Broad that can really make a difference. I wanted to do something that was more direct, with the artists.

ARS loans the VR rigs to its artists, who keep them at their homes or studios for as long as they need to finish the work; Tolch kept his more than a year while teaching himself to use the game engine software through online tutorials. ARS then displays the new VR work at its studio, or it facilitates an exhibition at a gallery or another art space.

Tolch showed his VR work, which combines still photography, 3-D modeling, screenshots, animation and images of his paintings, at ARS in February 2019; the piece was exhibited alongside his large-scale oils on canvas, figurative abstraction works he says are about painting, if somewhat impersonal. The VR work, with its amalgam of sourced imagery, allowed him to go deeper, to explore my identity and my heritage that Im not really clear on, he says.

Its an architectural, biological environment that you can walk around in and look at all these artifacts from my past: photos of my grandfather, pencil drawings my great-grandma did. There are voices. Its almost like a storehouse of things that I know and I remember.

Joe Sola spent over a year conceptualizing and sketching his VR piece, Changing Room, before figuring out the technology with artist-animator Filip Kostic. The work debuted at Honor Fraser gallery in Culver City in January alongside Solas enormous gold-hued pigment prints. At the opening, visitors waited in line up to 30 minutes to don a headset and descend into Solas animated VR world, which explores violence, sexuality and race in popular culture, with O.J. Simpson as the viewers co-pilot.

During the reception, VR explorers took turns interacting with the piece in the corner of the gallery, which added a performance art element to the room. Passersby gawked as headset-clad VR participants, blind to their real-world surroundings, jerked their bodies around awkwardly, groping at imaginary objects in the air.

Its part painting, part filmmaking, part sculpture, part collage, part performance, part sound, part animation, Sola says of VR. Its the closest tool that Ive experienced that matches my imagination.

How to sell the works, however, is still being finessed, Masi says. Tolchs piece is an edition of five; Solas, of three. The artist and studio each keep a copy as well. An artists proof from each edition will be donated to a museum or cultural institution; the first collector to buy a work from an edition will get to name the recipient, Masi says.

The idea is for it to be someplace where its good for the artists work to be seen, he says. So museums is what were pushing.

Acute Arts Birnbaum says that the question of how to edition and distribute VR work is still very much up in the air. While small editions might be suitable for some works, his company which hasnt commercialized any VR art yet is focused instead on exhibition models and the democratizing potential of the medium.

Earlier this year it produced a VR video by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The piece, addressing migration and animal rights, launched on the Guardians YouTube channel Jan. 30 and got about 100,000 views its first day but the work isnt for sale.

We havent found the model yet to sell these works, Birnbaum says. It seems it should be art for everyone and it should be distributed in large editions, like Netflix. But its unclear where it will sit in the art market and in the institutional context.

But are the works art?

My litmus test, Baker Cahill says, is how much conceptual rigor has gone into it why are you even using this medium, why VR and not painting or sculpture or immersive theater?

ARS has two VR pieces in the works with L.A. artist Brian Bress and San Diego-based Victoria Fu. Both pieces aim to explore the medium, conceptually.

Bress has spent the last decade making screen-based work involving costumes, sets and his own art-making performances all of which he turns into wall-mounted video installations. His VR piece will place viewers in a virtual art-making space, he says, where they can slice and dice a canvas to create portals to other spaces that have more imagery inside of them.

Fu, whose work appears in the collections of LACMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, says her VR piece will transport viewers to a domestic interior and address consumer lifestyle desires while also playing with the 3-D space.

My video installations address how viewers situate themselves in narrative space, she says of previous work. This, VR, is a whole other step. Its definitely foreign to me, an experiment.

This early gestation stage of the experiment is especially exciting, Imai says, waiting to see what comes out.

Giving these tools to artists can give us a look into the future, he says. Maybe its a cautionary tale, maybe its a beautiful world.

The Faroe Islands is an 18-island rocky, volcanic archipelago that's home to 50,000 people with nearly half of its population living in Torshavn, the capital. Tourism has been growing over the last five years. Around 120,000 people visited the semi-autonomous Danish territory last year.

Despite its government already easing some restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of the virus, international tourists have been advised not to travel to the territory until at least 1 May.

While the pandemic has resulted in improved air quality around the world, it is expected to have a disastrous impact on the tourism sector, which counts for one-tenth of global GDP. Up to 75 million jobs are at immediate risk in global travel and tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

Like many other destinations, the Faroe Islands tourism board believes in the positive effect VR can have on real-world travel. Author of a recent report, Ralph Hollister, claims that "more companies are realizing the potential of Virtual Reality in terms of creating bespoke marketing campaigns for aspiring travellers, instead of viewing it as a gimmick".

It seems that VR and similar technologies can give a boost to the sector, rather than replace the real adventure. "The idea is to whet people's appetite and get them to want to come and experience this in real life," says Levi Hanssen, Content and Communications Manager, Visit Faroe Islands.

Virtual Reality: Diabetes Care During COVID-19 and Beyond – Medscape

We are in a whole new world of virtual reality.

I was doing telehealth before the arrival of COVID-19, but I wasn't all that good at it. It wasn't something that I did often, and I always felt sort of discombobulated and clunky doing it.

Now, suddenly, we are doing pretty much all of our visits via telehealth. I still don't feel all that fluent at doing telehealth visits, but I'm getting better.

What are some things I've learned? First, you and your patients have to be organized. My patients who are on devices are encouraged to upload everything they can in advance. Otherwise, you don't have the data you need to help manage patients. I try to make sure that my patients and I can see the data on the screen and each other; I like being able to show the data to my patients, and it allows me to have visits that are much like the visits I used to have in person. However, each visit takes more time because the previsit organization takes more time.

Visits also take me more time because my patients and I aren't really used to each other in this new mode. There's a lot of discussionnecessary discussionabout the world and how it has changed in regard to COVID-19 and diabetes. Usually, by the end of the visit, my patients and I are feeling pretty comfortable and the follow-up visits become easy.

An issue that I still have with telehealth is that of timing. In the old days, the staff would knock on the door to tell me that a patient was waiting, but now I don't have that cue. I really have to look at the time and figure out how to be sure that I end one visit and then get to the next.

I really have trouble charting during visits because I'm looking up to see the patient on the Zoom camera, and that doesn't make it easy for me to look down and chart. I don't want to be rude, and in fact, our connection with patients is one of the most important things we can offer them.

I'm not fluent in all of this yet and I tend to do a lot of my charting later in the evening. I'd like to get back to the system where I was able to see patients, chart, and take care of everything all at once, but I'm not as good at that as I used to be.

A big issue for me with telehealth is doing things like prior authorizations and all the paperwork that I need to get devices covered. That's hard because I'm not in the office where I can sign things all the time, and I don't necessarily have as many tools as I once did to fulfill those patient needs.

I'm working it out with my office staff, many of whom are working remotely, and I'm trying to make sure that my patients get what they need out of their telehealth visits. I'm doing better than when I started, but it's been a really steep learning curve for many of us.

As I begin to get a little more comfortable with telehealth, I do feel like I'm starting to regain my lifeat least a little bitand I'm slowly thinking about things beyond COVID-19. Like probably many of you, I had all sorts of things planned. I had meetings planned, lectures I was supposed to give, and travel I was supposed to take. All of the medical organizations are trying to switch everything to virtual platforms, and it's going to be interesting to learn how to deal with education and interact with our colleagues in a virtual way.

The American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions are not going to be held in person but will be on a virtual platform. It's going to be interesting to see how we all adapt to learning virtually. As time passes, we're going to become increasingly interested in our world of diabetes again in addition to the world of COVID-19. Eventually, we'll all come back to a new normal, but it's going to include elements of the things we've learned.

I tend to be an optimist. I'm hoping that the lessons learned through this crisis will become tools we take to better our practices and patient care in the future.

As hospitals worldwide face severe shortages of health professionals, people are being called off the sidelines to help COVID-19 patients even those with little to no experience in treating infectious diseases.To train thousands of doctors and nurses with expertise in other areas such as knee surgery or neurology and retired practitioners reentering the medical field some hospitals are implementing an unlikely method: virtual reality simulations.At Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, more than 300 doctors have learned skills, such as how to assess a patient's symptoms or perform CPR while wearing protective gear, through VR."It feels like you are in the room with a patient," said Russell Metcalfe-Smith, the director of the Women's Guild Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which has been rapidly training staff for COVID-19. "Based on the decisions you make in the simulation, one direction will lead to another. We have jump quickly into a virtual environment like this to get them to where they need to be."Doctors and nurses at hospitals nationwide are undergoing a variety of coronavirus-specific trainings right now, including how to correctly put on and take off protective equipment, how to utilize ventilators that are typically only used by critical care staff, learning new guidelines around concepts such as basic CPR and life support, and managing a diagnosis.But because time and resources are limited, the door has opened for technologies like VR to fill in the gaps. Considering how the medical industry has long been an early adopter of VR, from using it as distraction therapy for medical procedures or even at the dentist, to a training method for surgeons, it's a natural place for hospitals to turn."We've found it very valuable to observe a process and it's all been done with social distancing," Metcalfe-Smith said. "Because we can't get large groups together right now, we've had to rely on technology like this to give the same experience and we're grateful for that."The hospital uses software from startup Virti, which provides detailed feedback and metrics on which procedures medical professionals may need more practice with. Cedars-Sinai started using the program in January but rolled it out to more health professionals in mid-March as the outbreak spread."We wanted the exercises to embody what is happening in the real-world right now," said Virti founder Dr. Alex Young. "One simulation puts the user alone in an isolation room, where they can see nurses and doctors come in and out, so they can get an idea of how scary it is for patients. It's easy to forget the basics of communicating through the masks, so scenarios like this help with bedside manner."The company signed up 70,000 new users in the past three weeks across hospitals and universities in the U.S., U.K. and Israel.Typically, trainees learn in environments watched by evaluators and their peers behind a glass wall. In such a scenario, a mannequin, controlled remotely, acts as the patient. But a virtual simulator lets medical professionals practice the skills they need through a VR headset or a tablet, at the hospital or at home.Boston-based Oxford Medical Simulation is also focused on improving the decision-making process for practitioners in emergency situations. Its scenarios range from how to efficiently and safely put on protective gear to more intensive situations with sick patients.In one of Oxford's simulations, a nurse, in the form of an avatar, hands the user a file with a brief history of the virtual patient. The doctor or nurse is then required to assess his or her symptoms, making decisions in real time based on how the patient reacts; they may need to check the stomach or the lungs or make fast judgment calls if someone vomits up blood, has a seizure or gasps for air. Oxford's scenarios aren't necessarily COVID-19-specific, but represent what any medical professional may encounter in an emergency. "The concept is so doctors and nurses can make mistakes in virtual reality and learn from them," said founder and chief medical officer Dr. Jack Pottle, who launched the service in 2018. "Some physicians are coming directly from medical school and thrown into practice, or are retired doctors and nurses not necessarily trained in the areas needed for safely treating people with COVID-19. These simulations help get them up to speed and feel more confident about it, too."Even before the pandemic, schools were using these tools to train the next generation of medical professionals. "It's still a key way to teach skills they will have to perform often or give them exposure to high-risk conditions that need to be managed correctly."Early clinical research on VR training has determined the tools could be effective in decreasing injury, speeding up processes and improving overall results. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Advances in Medical Education & Profession, people trained by VR had "lower performance errors and higher accuracy compared to those trained by conventional approaches."However, it added that the technology should be used as a complementary tool to traditional methods and more research should be done on the topic."We've had an overwhelmingly positive response to the training," said Carol DerSarkissian, a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at New York University Langone Medical Center, which is currently using Oxford's platform to train students. "Part of becoming a good doctor is the experience of taking care of similar cases over and over and learning from each one. help with new skills and build their confidence before entering the frontlines and allow for that opportunity without putting anyone at risk."

As hospitals worldwide face severe shortages of health professionals, people are being called off the sidelines to help COVID-19 patients even those with little to no experience in treating infectious diseases.

To train thousands of doctors and nurses with expertise in other areas such as knee surgery or neurology and retired practitioners reentering the medical field some hospitals are implementing an unlikely method: virtual reality simulations.

At Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, more than 300 doctors have learned skills, such as how to assess a patient's symptoms or perform CPR while wearing protective gear, through VR.

"It feels like you are in the room with a patient," said Russell Metcalfe-Smith, the director of the Women's Guild Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which has been rapidly training staff for COVID-19. "Based on the decisions you make in the simulation, one direction will lead to another. We have [doctors] jump quickly into a virtual environment like this to get them to where they need to be."

Doctors and nurses at hospitals nationwide are undergoing a variety of coronavirus-specific trainings right now, including how to correctly put on and take off protective equipment, how to utilize ventilators that are typically only used by critical care staff, learning new guidelines around concepts such as basic CPR and life support, and managing a diagnosis.

But because time and resources are limited, the door has opened for technologies like VR to fill in the gaps. Considering how the medical industry has long been an early adopter of VR, from using it as distraction therapy for medical procedures or even at the dentist, to a training method for surgeons, it's a natural place for hospitals to turn.

"We've found it very valuable to observe a [doctor's thinking] process and it's all been done with social distancing," Metcalfe-Smith said. "Because we can't get large groups together right now, we've had to rely on technology like this to give the same experience and we're grateful for that."

The hospital uses software from startup Virti, which provides detailed feedback and metrics on which procedures medical professionals may need more practice with. Cedars-Sinai started using the program in January but rolled it out to more health professionals in mid-March as the outbreak spread.

"We wanted the exercises to embody what is happening in the real-world right now," said Virti founder Dr. Alex Young. "One simulation puts the user alone in an isolation room, where they can see nurses and doctors come in and out, so they can get an idea of how scary it is for patients. It's easy to forget the basics of communicating through the masks, so scenarios like this help with bedside manner."

The company signed up 70,000 new users in the past three weeks across hospitals and universities in the U.S., U.K. and Israel.

Typically, trainees learn in environments watched by evaluators and their peers behind a glass wall. In such a scenario, a mannequin, controlled remotely, acts as the patient. But a virtual simulator lets medical professionals practice the skills they need through a VR headset or a tablet, at the hospital or at home.

Boston-based Oxford Medical Simulation is also focused on improving the decision-making process for practitioners in emergency situations. Its scenarios range from how to efficiently and safely put on protective gear to more intensive situations with sick patients.

In one of Oxford's simulations, a nurse, in the form of an avatar, hands the user a file with a brief history of the virtual patient. The doctor or nurse is then required to assess his or her symptoms, making decisions in real time based on how the patient reacts; they may need to check the stomach or the lungs or make fast judgment calls if someone vomits up blood, has a seizure or gasps for air. Oxford's scenarios aren't necessarily COVID-19-specific, but represent what any medical professional may encounter in an emergency.

"The concept is so doctors and nurses can make mistakes in virtual reality and learn from them," said founder and chief medical officer Dr. Jack Pottle, who launched the service in 2018. "Some physicians are coming directly from medical school and thrown into practice, or are retired doctors and nurses not necessarily trained in the areas needed for safely treating people with COVID-19. These simulations help get them up to speed and feel more confident about it, too."
