The Impossible Burger: Ethics and a CNA taste test – Catholic News Agency

Washington D.C., Nov 9, 2019 / 05:00 am (CNA).- Food trends come and go, and the trend du jour is plant-based meat that is partially made in a laboratory.

Many vegans and vegetarians have rejoiced at the growing popularity and relative mainstream success of both the Beyond and Impossible brands, and there is a growing claim that eschewing meat choices in favor of these new products is a more ethical choice for consumers.

CNA spoke to Catholic moral theologians to discuss the ethics of eating meat, and the morality of eating faux meat during penitential fasts. And, lest CNA coverage of these products seem incomplete, we conducted a taste test.

According to Dr. Joseph Capizzi, a professor of moral theology at the Catholic University of America a person is not morally obligated to choose a vegan patty, like the Impossible Burger, over a beef or chicken burger.

Theres no reason, in my opinion, to think the consumption of products so dependent upon technology are superior to the consumption of animal products, said Capizzi.

I do think, however, in both cases, ethically relevant issues include the production of the foods, including not merely the environmental impact, but also the ways technologies might distance the human being from creation, he added.

Capizzi told CNA that while he does not think it is ethically superior for people to stick to eating mostly plant-based food, he does think that people need to reflect on the ethical nature of eating.

Though eating is a basic human need, how we eat, what we eat, with whom we eat--including whom we exclude--are all questions that need our reflection, said Capizzi. While these alternative products have done some work to address some of these concerns, there is much work to be done.

One thing Ive noticed is the lack of hospitality that can accompany over-restrictive diets, he explained, recounting the experience of seeing a poor person offer meat to guests, presented as a luxury, only to see the meat rejected because of the guests vegetarianism.

Dr. Charles Camosy, a professor at Fordham University who has written extensively about veganism and vegetarianism, disagreed with Capizzis take. Camosy told CNA that these new products make it harder for American Catholics to justify eating meat.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church insists we have a moral duty not to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly, said Camosy.

With good-tasting protein available from so many sources now, including from new imitation meat products, the teaching of the Church would seem to indicate that the necessity of participating in the suffering of death of animals, for most of us, isn't what it might have been in the past.

Camosy noted that the Bible states that in the new Kingdom of God that will come with Christs second coming, animals are to be our companions, not our food.

The new kingdom will be a Peaceable Kingdom among all creatures: lambs, lions, snakes, and babies, he said, and there will be no need to slaughter animals.

The faux hamburger market is dominated by two companies: Beyond Meat makes the Beyond Burger patty, Beyond Beef ground meat substitute, Beyond Sausage, and Beyond Beef Crumbles. Impossible Foods sells the Impossible Burger patty and the Impossible Sausage.

Protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates, and water are the five building blocks of meat, says Beyond Meats website. Beyond uses plant-based versions of protein--including protein from peas, mung beans, fava beans, brown rice, and sunflowers--and fats to create its products. Additionally, Beyond uses beet juice to create a burger that bleeds.

Impossible Food uses heme, a protein that is found in nearly all living things, to make its plant-based burgers taste like meat. This heme also mimics a bleeding effect.

Impossible Burger gets its heme from the protein soy leghemoglobin, which is naturally found in soy roots. Impossible Foods produces soy leghemoglobin through genetic engineering and fermentation. Thanks to heme, Impossible Burger has a rich, beefy flavor that satisfies the most discerning meat-eaters but it contains no animal products whatsoever, the companys website says.

Dunkin, the restaurant once known as Dunkin Donuts, launched a Beyond Sausage sandwich nationwide Nov. 6 after a successful test market in Manhattan. Customers can choose to substitute a veggie egg white patty for the fried egg. CNA paid $3.99 for the Beyond Sausage sandwich.

An ordinary pork sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich on an English muffin from Dunkin costs $4.99.

CNA recruited three journalists for a blind taste test of the Beyond Sausage sandwich and pork sausage sandwich. Two out of the three testers were unable to determine at first glance if the sandwich they were eating contained Beyond or pork sausage, and one mistakenly thought the pork sausage she was eating was actually the Beyond Sausage.

Two out of the three testers said they preferred the pork sausage sandwich to the Beyond sandwich, but one said she liked that the Beyond sandwich reminded her of a falafel. This tester was the only one who said she would order the sandwich again in the future.

The sandwich was not extremely popular among testers. But some Catholics have asked whether it would be good enough to eat on a Friday, when Catholics are instructed to abstain from (actual) meat.

CNA asked Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P., the academic dean and vice president of the Dominican House of Studies, to weigh in on whether or not an Impossible Burger (or similar product) would be appropriate for a day when Catholics abstain from meat.

The Churchs universal norms say that we should abstain from meat on Fridays, especially Fridays in Lent, explained Petri. The Impossible Burgers are not technically meat. So, of course, someone could argue that we can eat them on Fridays.

Still, he said that giving up meat but having Impossible Burgers that taste like meat seems to me to be a technicality to get out of the spirit of the penance, he said.

We should remember the point here is to give up something in union with Christ crucified. If a person is seeking Impossible meat to skirt the penance, its hard to believe theyve really understood the point of it all.

It is important for Catholics to remember that fasting and abstinence are not done for purposes of dieting, or to respect animals, said Petri. The purpose of fasting is to unite our offerings to the perfect offering of Christ, and so to prepare for the great feast of his coming.

And for those who are still struggling (or hungry) on a Friday, Petri had some advice.

If youre craving meat on a Friday, offer it up.

Feng leads research on motor recovery therapy – Duke Department of Neurology

Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation has significant potential to contribute to the otherwise sparse landscape of stroke recovery therapies for post-stroke limb weakness, according to Wuwei Wayne Feng,MD, MS, the new chief of the Stroke and Vascular Neurology Division in the Department of Neurology.

Treatment for stroke rehabilitation and recovery is quite lacking, as there is not much well-established evidence in the field, says Feng, who also serves as medical director of Dukes Comprehensive Stroke Center. We want to particularly focus on brain modulation techniques and hope to bring more research to this much-needed area to come up with new ways to zap the brain and develop new therapies for patients.

To further these efforts, Duke soon will become the 13th stroke center in the United States to participate in a four-year phase II multicenter transcranial direct current stimulation study funded by an $8.1 million grant from StrokeNet, a National Institutes for Health program. The TRANScranial Direct Current Stimulation forPOst-stroke MotorRecovery: A phase II sTudy (TRANSPORT 2) will evaluate three dosing selection based on the preliminary efficacy, safety, tolerability, and feasibility for participants who have experienced a first-ever ischemic stroke within one to six months of enrolling in the study.

During the study, patients will receive direct current to the scalp through two electrode pads for 30 minutes per day while simultaneously receiving modified constraint-induced movement therapy for two hours per day. The three dosing groups are sham, 2 milliamps, and 4 milliamps, and patients will return to Duke for 10 total intervention sessions over a two-week period.

If we can select the optimal dose group from this study and confirm the effectiveness in the phase III study, this will become a new rehabilitation therapy for stroke patients with motor deficitsthe most common complication after stroke, he says.

(This article originally appeared on Clinical Practice Today, a free magazine and website geared for clinicians. Read it and other articles here.)

Feng explains the benefit of this combination of therapies: On the central nervous system/brain level, patients receive positive current on the affected side to boost brain activity and negative current on the unaffected side to suppress brain activity. On the peripheral nervous system/limb level, patients suppress the movement of the unaffected hand by wearing a large mitten while receiving high-intensity therapy to force the use of the hand affected by stroke. In this way, patients get double stimulation to trigger the brain to rewire itself to function better, Feng adds.

As part of the TRANSPORT 2 study, Feng has developed an imaging biomarker that helps determine the exact location and severity of damage to the corticospinal tractthe pathway that connects the brain to the limbin patients who have experienced ischemic stroke.

We use a combination of imaging biomarkers developed by my lab, a neurophysiology tool, and clinical assessment to carefully calculate the exact brain damage from the stroke, Feng says. This approach will help identify what kind of patients will best respond to this type of brain stimulation intervention.

In addition to leading this national study, Feng and his team in the brain modulation and stroke recovery lab will focus on the study of other non-invasive neuromodulation tools in stroke recovery, including transcranial magnetic stimulation, low-intensity focused ultrasound, and a remote-ischemic preconditioning tool that Duke researchers will study patients to develop future innovative techniques for stroke recovery.

Patients can enroll in the TRANSPORT 2 study or the various other stroke rehabilitation studies at Dukes brain modulation and stroke recovery lab by contacting Kristina Balderson at kristina.balderson@duke.edu or 919-684-0071.

Some Neurologists Want To End Daylight Saving Time, Calling It Unhealthy – Newsweek

Daylight saving time (DST) officially ended in the United States at 2 a.m. on November 3, but three neurologists at Vanderbilt University say that the practice should be totally done away with permanently.

Drs. Beth A. Malow, Olivia J. Veatch and Kanika Bagai collaborated on a piece published in JAMA Neurology on Monday that brought evidence of the detrimental effects of DST on the brain, citing specifically the negative impact it may have on circadian rhythms, the internal clock that regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle.

They wrote that the transition to and from daylight saving time has been associated with several health complications, including an increased risk of stroke.

"The rate of ischemic stroke was significantly higher during the first 2 days after DST transition, with women, older age, and malignancy showing increased susceptibility," the piece read.

Studies have also indicated that the transition negatively affects sleep patterns, especially among adolescents, causing them "an average of 15 to 20 fewer minutes of sleep." The authors pointed to data indicating that teenagers averaged about 7 hours and 30 minutes of sleep per night after the transition. This, they said, was not in-line with efforts to help them get enough sleep.

"While it is important to recognize that this study only involved 40 students and was limited to the week following the DST transition," the authors wrote, "an American Academy of Sleep Medicine consensus statement has recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep for adolescents on a regular basis."

All in all, the benefits don't outweigh the risks.

"Based on these data, we advocate for the elimination of transitions to DST," the authors wrote.

Daylight saving time has certainly not always existed, nor does it lack opponents.

Scholars of American history (and fans of the 2004 Nicholas Cage thriller, National Treasure) may recall that it was inventor and founding father Benjamin Franklin who first introduced the idea of daylight saving time in the 1780s. However, as CNN reported, the practice did not begin to be implemented widely in the United States until 1966, following the passage of the Uniform Time Act. Our current system, in which which DST runs from March to November, has only been in place since 2007.

Further, the neurologists' professional opinion may be good news for Americans, most of whom, according to a recent poll, oppose the yearly hour-switching that daylight saving time necessitates.

According to the poll, conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and reported by the Associated Press, 71 percent of Americans would prefer to toss the tradition. However, respondents could not come to a consensus as to whether the country's clocks ought to stay locked on standard time or on daylight saving time all year. According to the Associated Press, 40 percent said they would prefer to keep standard time for the duration of the year, while 31 percent expressed support for always operating on daylight saving time and never switching back to standard.

‘Snake oil salesmen’: Two neurologists respond to the CBD craze – Yahoo Finance

The CBD craze has taken the world by storm, seizing promotional and consumer dollars as fast as anything in recent memory: cryptocurrencies, fake (but edible and delicious)meat, or vaping. According to estimates fromdata research firm Brightfield, the U.S. CBD market in 2019 is expected to reach $5 billion 706% growth compared to 2018.

But whilecelebrityaftercelebrity has endorsedcannabidiol (CBD) products, to which they can personally attest to the benefits, the science isnt so sure.

Kim Kardashian is one of many celebrities and athletes to have endorsed CBD products. (Photo by Angela Weiss / AFP)

While the efficacy of CBD to treat everything fromanxiety to Crohns diseaseisnt clear, its a real substance with real medical potential.

In June 2018, the FDAapproved the first drug containingCBD oil, an epilepsy drug called Epidiolex from Greenwich Biosciences, a subsidiary of GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPH). On Nov. 5, GWreported $91 million in salesin the third quarter, of which $86 million came from Epidiolex, which helped the company beat sales expectations.

But the rest of CBDs claims remain untested and unapproved as far as FDA standards are concerned. Yahoo Finance spoke to Dr. Susan M. Lippmann and Dr. William E. Rosenfeld, neurologists and co-directors at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center for Children and Adults in St. Louis, Mo.

The duo have performed studies on epilepsy drugs for over 40 years through Phases I, II, III, and IV of the FDA approval process. They performed the double-blind FDA trials for Epidiolex, and though they saw positive results in terms of epilepsy, the pair remain skeptical of the drugs meteoric entry into mainstream society and the business world.

We believe it has been proven by double-blind placebo studies to be successful in reducing certain types of seizures, said the doctors in a joint email to Yahoo Finance. For other diseases, much of the information out in the public domain is not based on FDA studies and is based on hearsay and anecdotes.

Lippmann and Rosenfeld were quick to point out that this doesn't mean that some of these usages won't later prove to be true, but without the studies, theres no proof.

Double-blind studies when neither the researchers nor the patients know which drugs are placebo and which are real are especially important given the fact that the placebo effect can typically result in 10% to 30% improvements in epilepsy studies, and potentially higher for other diseases, according to Lippmann and Rosenfeld.

Looking at the surge ofCBD products, the physicians view the CBD craze as based on peoples own perceptions about cannabis combined withbig businesshype.

It is large financial interests who want to take advantage of a financial boom, Lippmannn and Rosenfeld said. Some well-meaning individuals may even be taking advantage of a potential boom, basing it only on a personal bias, having used CBD oil themselves and feeling it helped them, all the while not realizing the potential for the well-known placebo effect.

For epilepsy, the doctors said, a 10 to 30% improvement for patients can come from the placebo effect, and in other diseases it can be even more pronounced.

Story continues

Unfortunately to date, the sale of CBD is based on little fully blinded proven data, much like the snake oil salesman or Carters little liver pill of days gone past, the doctors said. Will CBD make lots of money for its growers and sales stores and corporations? I am sure it will. Is it all based on science? The answer is no.

The trials Lippmann and Rosenfeld performed used a dosage of 10 to 30 mg/kg/day and the recommended dosage for the approved drug is 10 to 20 mg/kg/day for Lennox Gastaut or Dravets Syndrome, with a starting dose of 5 mg/kg/day. For a 150-pound person, thats 680 mg to 2041 mg. Contrast this with capsules on the market that are 25 mg of CBD.

Many patients come to the office and are only taking droppers amounts of CBD with very minimal amounts of CBD, the doctors said. Some of these may well be placebo doses. This may well explain why patients often feel they are having little or no side effects.

In the doses that were effective for epilepsy, CBD does have side effects, on both the liver and cognitive functions.

People feel that because it comes from a plant, they believe there are no side effects, said Rosenfeld and Lippmann. They do not realize that many drugs come from plants and that clearly there is a potential for side effects from CBD.

The doctors pointed out a key additional problem with other CBD drugs that comes from the fact that the space is almost entirely unregulated by the FDA or other parts of the federal government. Many CBD products could easily contain little or no CBD or contaminants which could be potentially very toxic, Lippmann and Rosenfeld said.

‘Text neck’ injury becoming more common in kids, teens – KPAX-TV

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Fall can be a busy season for sports medicine physicians as school sports ramp up.

"People come in with neck pain, they come in with upper back pain," said Dr. James Roberson of Children's Mercy Kansas City.

But those neck and back injuries often have nothing to do with sports.

"A lot of kids are kind of thinking 'oh there's no way that just looking at my phone is the problem here,' " Roberson said. "For the parents, it takes zero convincing."

The repetitive strain injury is known as "text neck."

"Sometimes I even have to lay down because my neck hurts, so I'll lay and type out a text or something," said college student Lauren Juliana.

The average head weighs 10 to 11 pounds, according to a study published in Surgical Neurology International. When you flex your head forward 30 degrees to look down at a phone, the strain on your neck is actually 40 pounds. At 60 degrees, you put 60 pounds on your neck.

"The more you do it, the more it will hurt, the harder it is to break that habit," Roberson said.

But you don't have to keep sticking your neck out to stay in touch with your friends. One easy fix is to raise your screens to eye level.

"I recommend that kids, if they're working a lot on an iPad, that they actually get a cookbook stand and set it up on a few books," Roberson said.

You can even stretch to alleviate the pain.

Roberson demonstrated one stretch in which you grab the sides of your chair then tilt your head left and right.

Another exercise he suggested is probably best to do when you're alone.

"I call it the 'derp stretch' because it makes you look kind of stupid," Roberson said with a laugh.

Start with your chin in a neutral position, then push it straight back, stretching out the back of your neck.

You can also do simple shoulder pinches to release tension. Roberson recommended doing ten repetitions of the exercises three times a day.

He's also giving parents the green light to nag their kids about the bad habit.

"It's good to tell your kids to sit up straight, better posture, move the screen up or get off the screen, go outside and play instead, which is always good advice," Roberson said.

Plot twist: Neurologist turns her hand to romance writing and grabs the prize – CBC.ca

There were always clues that aspiring novelist Dr. Anne Lipton would eventually immerse herselfinto the world of make-believe, fantasyand adventure.

"One of the things that I wrote about in my medical school essay was Nancy Drew," says Lipton, who lives in Vancouver.

"Nancy Drew ... inspired meto try to be a medical detective and find out what was going wrong when someone was sick and howto make them better."

Lipton, who is originally from Michigan, did end up becoming a "medical detective" and a pretty successful one to boot. The Northwestern University graduate became a neurologist, even penning multiple books on dementia care.

But now, her career has taken a plot twist.

Lipton is one of the inaugural recipients of the Harlequin Books Creator Fund Award, awarded to up-and-coming female writers in the U.S. and Canada.Harlequin, a Toronto-based publishing house, is one of the most successful publishers in the world, with a focus on romance, fantasyand historical fiction.

Romance writing, a genre sometimes dismissed as "empty entertainment", is big business. According to the Romance Writers of America, the billion-dollar romance genre makes up 23 per cent of the fiction market.

In recent years, the genre has undergone a feminist makeover, challenging archaic tropesof damsels in distress and other stereotypes.

Lipton'smanuscript a time travel Christmas-themed romantic comedysetin the video game industry is a nod to that.

"[My main character] isa strong female protagonist who works in a male-dominated industry," she said.

It was a move to Ireland that set the stage for Lipton's career change. Despite having a position ready, it was taking a long time for her medical credentials to be recognized in Ireland.

As she waited to be certified, Lipton, who had already written non-fiction, decided to try her hand at writinga novel.

She loved it.

Part of the process of novel writing mirrors her work as a neurologist. Lipton said she was drawn to neurology, and dementiain particular, because of her patients' rich life stories.

"Because dementia often affects older people I was able to hear many very exciting and interesting life stories," she said.

"I would say one reason I didn't go into something like emergency medicine is because once the patient leaves the emergency department you never hear the end of the story. And so I like to have a satisfying story arc in real life and in my novels."

A move to Vancouverseven years ago happened to coincide providentially with NaNoWriMo National Novel Writing Month in November.

Lipton, who happened to move in the month of October, said she almost immediately got together with other writers in the city.

The internet-based creative writing challenge gives participants exactly 30 days to write a draft of a book or novel, with a minimum 50,000 word count. Close to 10,000 people participate in the challenge across the country.

"I know sometimes people say that Vancouver is a hard place to meet people but I found this a great way to meet people. We all had a shared interest. Most of the people there also enjoyed reading so we discussed books and writing and it was a great way to meet people."

As part of her award, Liptonwill receive financial and editorial support from Harlequin but there are no guarantees her manuscript will get published.

"Asa writer, sometimes it's more competitive thanapplying to medical school in terms of trying to get published," she laughed.

In the meantime, she's hoping for a riveting finale.

Sarepta CEO dispels FDA ‘bias’ theory, but no update on when CRL will be resolved – FierceBiotech

Sarepta Therapeutics' chief Doug Ingram has come out against accusations that the FDA is biased against the company after its recent drug rejection but offered no timing on when the agency's concerns will be fixed.

Despite not being directly mentioned in its third-quarter press release Thursday night, Ingram did address the FDAs complete response letter (CRL) to its second Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) hopeful golodirsen right off the bat in his call to analysts and journalists.

He said: I must also acknowledge what we all know, that we had a setback in the third quarter. And rather than baring it among or after a discussion of our successes, I will begin by commenting our CRL disappointment that occurred in August.

Having worked diligently on our submission for VYONDYS 53, the generic name for golodirsen for well over a year, and based on all of our interactions with the division of neurology products, we were very confident that we would obtain an approval on our PDUFA date, which was August 19.

Instead, as you know we were surprised to have received a complete response letter, also known as the CRL, signed by the Office of Drug Evaluation I. Our disappointed extends beyond Sarepta to the 8% of exon 53 amenable DMD patients in the United States to generate every day, while they await access to this therapy.

Ingram said that the biotech will now work with the agency to address the reasons for the CRL and to turn in a pathway for a potential approval, if one is possible, but offered no prediction on outcome or on timing, or to provide interim views during the process.

However, I will provide an update to the patient, physician and investment communities, once we have definitive clarity on the outcome of those discussions.

RELATED: Sarepta's Golodirsen snub highlights 'atypical communications,' heralds higher bar at FDA: analysts

The FDA rejected the New Drug Application for golodirsen, the follow-up to Exondys 51, Sareptas first treatment for DMD, in the summer over worries over the risk of infection linked to intravenous infusion portsdevices placed just under the skin to give doctors access to a veinand kidney toxicity seen in animal studies.

Like Exondys 51, golodirsen is designed to treat a group of Duchenne patients with a certain type of mutation. Exondys 51 works for about 13% of DMD patientsthose whose disease is amenable to exon 51 skipping. If approved, golodirsen would offer treatment to patients with a mutation in exon 53about 8% of the DMD population.

Sarepta has a bullish following from a vocal set of investors, who have raised concerns that the FDA may have rejected this drug because of the questionable approval it got for its first DMD drug, Exondys 51, back in 2016.

There was a lot of hand-wringing from the FDA internally about whether this met the clinical parameters needed for a regulatory green light, and some believe the CRL for Vyondys 53 has come as payback" for Exondys 51.

Ingram rejected the idea: To those may believe that the CRL suggest some sort of bias on behalf of the division of neurology towards Sarepta, I would unequivocally and emphatically disagree. Let me reiterate that I remain convinced that we were treated very fairly and professionally by the division of neurology.

He added that the CRL does have implications beyond Vyondys 53, notably for its next planned submission for PMO casimersen. As they are closely related, we will await clarity on the Vyondys matter before we submit for casimersen in the United States. But let me disabuse anyone who might have concerns.

He added, however, that the CRL does not have any read through to our microdystrophin gene therapy program. The CRL involved two safety signals in connection with an application for accelerated approval. Our microdystrophin program is overseen by a different part of the FDA, Sedar, and we are not seeking accelerated approval there. There is simply no overlap in either substance or personnel.

In a nod to the vocal investors, he also said that the noises around applying external pressure to bring this therapy a lot faster onto the market will not be coming from him.

I have no intention of doing either of those things, he said. If we can win the day with this therapy and with this issue, we will have done so on the size and on the regulation and in collaborative evidence-based discussions with our reviewers at the FDA.

Sarepta dipped slightly in the red by 0.2% after hours last night.

The Loneliness of Frontotemporal Dementia – The New York Times

After two years of worsening symptoms, the Kargers found Dr. Murray Grossman at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Grossman is short and charismatic, a quick-witted Montreal native who has mentored me since I began training in neurology. For the past several decades, he has pioneered research on neurodegenerative diseases that change behavior and language. When he saw Mr. Karger in 2007, the diagnosis was clear within the hour: Mr. Karger had a type of frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia attacks people in their fifth or sixth decade, just as retirement comes within reach. Doctors believe the disease affects 60,000 people in the United States alone. Neurons in the front and side of the brain wilt, and along with them, images of peacefully growing old fade. Judgment and complex planning yields to chaotic disorganization. Inhibitions give way to impulsivity and hypersexuality, so that longtime faithful partners look to affairs and excessive pornography. Empathy turns to apathy. Obsessions and compulsions erupt. Language can become laborious; the meaning of words and objects can be lost, and fluent speech can dissolve into fragments of sentences with nonsensical grammar. Jarringly, memory remains largely untouched. Since brain areas that dictate personality are often the first to suffer, most people end up on a therapists couch long before finding their way to a neurologist.

In the throes of the disease, many families seek out others who might be experiencing something similar. The support group is helpful, because this can be a very lonely thing, said Ms. Karger, now 80, who is a co-leader of a support group for caregivers of those with frontotemporal dementia. She paused, then repeated, it can be very, very lonely.

When I visited Ms. Kargers support group this spring, members shared practical advice. Im having trouble getting my wife to shower, one man said, describing a common manifestation of apathy. Its been five weeks. Another man said he gets his wife to bathe by putting her toe or finger under the faucet first, so the wetness doesnt feel as foreign. A third person recommended giving up altogether in favor of dry shampoo and baby wipes.

A man asked about obsessions. With a tinge of humor, people recounted items their partners had fixated on: organizing glasses at a family wedding, aligning dirty dishes at Panera, fluffing pillows. You could be bleeding to death, and all shed want to do is rearrange the pillows, another man said.

American Headache Society Publishes Article Demonstrating the Promise of Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) as First-Line Treatment for Acute…

NETANYA, Israel, Nov. 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ --Theranica Bio-Electronics Ltd., a bio-medical technology company developing advanced electroceuticals for migraine and other pain disorders, announced today that the American Headache Society published an article in its peer-reviewed journal, Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain, highlighting the promise of Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) as an alternative to current treatment options and as a potential first-line therapy for acute migraine relief.

"While migraine is one of the most prevalent and disabling neurological diseases affecting a significant portion of the global population, many are still looking for an effective, long-term treatment option," said Alan Rapoport, M.D. author of the article and Professor of Neurology at UCLA. "For the first time, REN offers an effective, safe and non-invasive alternative for acute migraine treatment and may be suitable as a first-line therapy for some users."

The article Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) for the Acute Treatment of Migraine, reviews a pilot study and a pivotal study conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of the Nerivio, Theranica's smartphone-connected prescription migraine wearable device. Both studies showed positive results, demonstrating REN is as effective a treatment for acute treatment of migraine as standard pharmacological treatments, with a favorable safety profile.

The Nerivio alleviates migraine symptoms by stimulating the body's Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) response, in which one painful stimuli modulates pain in other regions of the body. As a smartphone-connected wearable, users can individually control the strength of their therapy and easily share data collected with healthcare providers to improve treatment plans. The Nerivio is the first device to use REN to stimulate CPM by placing the device on the upper arm at the onset of a migraine episode.

"The future of migraine care lies in non-invasive, drug free technologies that are effective and affordable," said Alon Ironi, CEO and co-founder of Theranica. "For those living with migraine, the search for long-term symptom relief is not easy. REN opens the door for new therapeutic alternatives, with Nerivio leading the way."

The article will be published in Headache's print journal in the coming weeks.

Fruits of youth: Consider this your guide to an anti-aging diet – Salamanca Press

There are several well-known factors that contribute to aging: smoking, stress, sun exposure and genetics, among them. But what you may not realize is what you put on your plate can also cause you to look beyond your year.

Everything that goes into your mouth affects your aging cycle, says Tina Martini, chef and author of "Delicious Medicine: The Healing Power of Food." Among the offenders are alcohol, refined sugar, and over-processed and fried foods.

When you eat fresh foods, as close to nature as you can get, you can slow down the effects of damage to your cells, thus slowing the aging process, she says.

Fried Foods

One of the main damaging factors is acrylamide, an organic compound that is produced during the frying process of some starchy foods. This has led the American Cancer Society to recommend limiting French fries, potato chips, foods made from grains breakfast cereals, cookies, toast because they tend to have higher levels of this chemical.

Acrylamide can affect the skin in the same way that sun damage does, says Martini.

Reduce your exposure by soaking raw potato slices in water for 15 to 30 minutes and draining before frying or roasting. Also, when cooking, choose boiling or steaming to stop acrylamide from forming.

Refined Sugar

Sugar is the main source of energy for our bodies, but it can also contribute to a process called glycation. The excess sugar molecules attach to proteins, creating "advanced glycation end products" or AGEs, which are linked to the loss of collagen. Losing collagen can lead to wrinkles and creepy skin.

Remove processed sugary foods from your diet and eat fresh vegetables and fruits, says Lorraine Kearney, BASc, NDTR, an adjunct lecturer at the City University of New York. To get the maximum nutrients from fruits enjoy them whole instead of dried, blended or pureed.

Snack on organic peaches, cherries, apples and strawberries as they can help to fight the signs of aging.

Enriched and Fortified Foods

You will often find the words enriched and fortified on labels of prepackaged foods. Those words generally mean that all the nutrients were removed during processing, and the manufacturer put back what they deemed important. A diet high in processed foods can lead to oxidative stress, which occurs due to an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body and may lead to cell damage.

Eating a diet rich in colorful foods increases the amount of nutrients the body needs to heal on the cellular level, Kearney says.

Stock up on fresh and antioxidant-rich foods like blackberries, blueberries, beets, bell peppers and radishes as they mitigate the effects of oxidative stress.

Alcohol

While drinking some alcohols in moderation is known to have beneficial health effects, overuse can cause wrinkles, puffiness, inflammation and dehydration.

While you should always remain hydrated, be extra mindful when consuming spirits; and instead of having a full glass of wine, enjoy a spritzer made with seltzer. Staying hydrated not only keeps your skin supple but also flushes toxins from the body.

Skin care is very important in protecting our skin, but its really the moisture in our bodies that keeps us radiant, says Martini.

HEALTHY LIVING: Being diagnosed with lung cancer, as a never smoker – Q13 News Seattle

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

SEATTLE -- November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths each year.

Alan Herr has never smoked a day in his life, so his lung cancer diagnosis came as a surprise, Really the story is oatmeal. "I mean you dont really want to know the answer.

Fall of 2012 was business as usual... "I would have oatmeal in the morning and one day I inhaled some oatmeal"

Some time had passed and he heard some rattling in his chest, So I assumed, 'oh its just the oatmeal talking,' right? I could see the x-ray and it looked very odd..."

Alan's symptoms became impossible to ignore though,Oh well its fear isnt it? I mean you dont really want to know the answer.

It was obvious the oatmeal was not the problem, so Alan finally went in for his MRI, I could see the x-ray and it looked very odd, and I thought well maybe thats pneumonia, I dont feel like I have pneumonia.

This time, his gut was right. It was not pneumonia, I have multiple tumors in both lungs. "You have to go forward.

Alan was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer at just 43 years old.

It was just an acceptance kind of, you know I had a good cry, I was by myself when I heard the news and then move forward. You have to go forward.

He has never smoked a day in his life.

According to The American Cancer Society, the same goes for the other 20 percent of people who have avoided smoking and are still diagnosed with lung cancer, Its really common, people will say, why me? We love to ask that question. But, why not me? Thats another way of thinking of it. Im just like anybody else and why should I be excluded from getting cancer.

Alan turned to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for support and treatment.

I was on chemotherapy probably off and on for 4 years.

He began seeking clinical trials at SCCA. The first one in 2016 was unsuccessful, That didnt work for me because a lot of immunotherapy doesnt work for never smokers. "It is really important to live deliberately..."

But he isn't giving up... The second one, the one I am currently on been on for about a year and 4 months or so, and it has worked really well.

And he doesn't want anyone else diagnosed with cancer to give up either, Its a difficult disease, it still is, but I tell people that this is the best time in the world to have cancer... We wanna be done with cancer, like Im just gonna get cured. But maybe what we wanna do is learn to live with cancer, long enough so that something curative can come along.

Alan has turned his diagnosis into an opportunity of sorts, What am I going to do about it? How can I be hopeful and a blessing to people around me? It is really important to live deliberately, to have short forgiveness lists and love and care for people, you can do that even if youre sick, its amazing.

Alan says one of the most important pieces of his journey has been his relationship with his doctors. He urges anyone else with cancer to find a doctor they can trust.

There Are Many Health Benefits To Getting A Good Night’s Sleep Here’s How To Get More Of It – Essence

Sleep: When we were children, we used to run from it, and now as adults, we wish we had more of it. A good nights sleep is not just something we all want its a necessity. Unbeknown to the Ill sleep when I die folks its essential for helping a person maintain optimal health and well-being. Research shows that poor sleep has immediate negative effects on your hormones, exercise performance and brain function. When it comes to their health, sleep is as vital as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.

For adults, ideally youre looking to gain about 7-8 hours of sleep per night for optimal health benefits, says Lauren Olson, Sleep Coach, International Maternity & Parenting Institute.

Getting that recommended slumber time in each night will not only help your body reboot, but give ample time for muscle tissue to rebuild (so you dont feel sore the next morning) and memory consolidation to complete (so you dont feel groggy the next morning). Lack of sleep, on the other hand, can put you at risk for weight gain, lowered immunity, increased stress, the inability to make clear and quick decisions, and raise your risk for serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Yes, the way you live impacts the way you sleep. Limit spicy foods or those high in fiber or caffeine prior to bedtime, which can disrupt your deep sleep cycles from connecting, says Olson. Try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, even if you choose to take the stairs at work or take your dog for a longer walk in the evening. Complete all workouts at least 2-3 hours prior to bedtime to give your body a chance to cool off.

Shut down electronics before bed.

Natural light exposure has many benefits, including Vitamin D, but nighttime light exposure in turn can have very negative side effects. This is due to its impact on your circadian rhythm, tricking your brain into thinking it is still daytime. This reduces hormones like melatonin, which helps you relax and get deep sleep. Blue light that emits from our smart devices and televisions can trick the body into actually thinking its daytime, and disrupts our melatonin production, says Olson. Invest in some blue light glasses if you cant live without your favorite show, and turn on the night time functions on your devices, or put them away all together 30-60 minutes prior to the time you wish to be asleep.

Find a quality mattress, linen and pillow.

If you suffer from insomnia or ever spent the night tossing and turning, than you know that bed quality can affect your sleep. One study looked at the benefits of a new mattress for 28 days, revealing that it reduced back pain by 57%, shoulder pain by 60% and back stiffness by 59%. It also improved sleep quality by 60%. Look for a mattress first off that is non-toxic, and doesnt use any memory foams, says Olson. If you tend to run warm at night, look for a breathable mattress, like the Purple Mattress, that contains a grid-style base which neutralizes body heat and keeps you from waking up dripping in sweat. Also, if your partner tends to toss and turn, look for a mattress that neutralizes major movement, which will help you, finally, get those eight hours of sleep youve been needing.

With so many mattresses on the market, youre probably unsure what to choose. But quite honestly, the bed in a box trend is not only popular, but also offers many health benefits to their mattresses. For mattresses, consider the Purple Hybrid Premier, which has a unique top layer adapts to your body and stays cool for superior comfort, support, and overall better sleep. Caspers Wave mattress on the other hand has five layers of premium foam & targeted ergonomic support (specifically designed for you) so its also another good option.

The same thing goes with your bed linen. Opt for the Buffy comforter, which dubs itself as the most comfortable blanket on earth due to their silky natural eucalyptus fibers or even a weighted blanket. Meant to mold to your body like a warm hug, the pressure of a weighted blanket, such as the ones from Baloo Living, relaxes the nervous system and encourages serotonin production, so you can drift off into the best sleep ever. You also cant go wrong with accessories from Brooklyn Bedding or Nest bedding.

Optimize your bedroom environment.

Many people believe that the bedroom environment and its setup are key factors in getting a good nights sleep. These factors include temperature, noise, air quality external lights and furniture arrangement. To optimize your bedroom environment, try to minimize external noise, light and artificial lights from devices like alarm clocks. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, relaxing, clean and enjoyable place. And if you tend to get dehydrated at night, keep some Essentia water by your bedside, because of the benefits of alkaline water.

Law debated allowing confiscation of Bitcoin by the police – ZDNet

Russia is considering a change in the law that would permit law enforcement to confiscate cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC).

As reported by local media publication RBC, Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs aims to develop a form of "legal mechanism" for the seizure of cryptocurrency and other "virtual assets" by 2021.

Proposals are being developed at present by the ministry, the Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring), the Prosecutor General's Office, the Justice Ministry, and customs service, alongside other agencies.

Tracking cryptocurrencies can be difficult, but it is not impossible. Assets can be 'washed' in which otherwise 'tainted' cryptocurrencies can be cleaned up through services that convert coins into other types but otherwise, if computer systems are confiscated, law enforcement may be able to find and access active wallet addresses.

However, keys may not be recoverable and the police would need to prove a wallet is owned by a suspect, leading to a raft of potential technical and legal challenges in cryptocurrency seizure.

CNET:IBM calls for regulation on facial recognition tech instead of bans

In order to bypass some of the challenges with virtual asset seizure, officials have suggested that coins stored on exchanges could be subject to requests by law enforcement to freeze an account or to transfer funds to a state-owned wallet address.

Such requests, as cryptocurrency exchanges do not operate inside Russian territory, could still be ignored.

During investigations, equipment including PCs and mobile devices may be seized, and according to Nikita Kulikov, a member of the State Duma's council as quoted by RBC, such seizure should also apply to virtual assets.

The publication added that cryptocurrencies are in a gray area in Russia, and so would need to be recognized legally as either a "commodity or a cash equivalent."

TechRepublic:How boot camps may fill the need for more white hats in the US

A draft law has been in development since 2017. The State Duma has adopted its first reading and a second is underway.

Russia's attitude to cryptocurrency appears to be in a constant state of flux. The country has previously introduced the CryptoRuble, a stablecoin intended to rival Bitcoin, and yet, the central bank and President Vladimir Putin have deemed cryptocurrencies a serious risk to existing financial systems and little more than a tool for criminal activity.

Dogolachan And The Ghost Of Massacres Past – bellingcat – bellingcat

On March 13, 2019, two young men entered their former high school in the small city of Suzano in So Paulo, Brazil. The first one in, Guilherme Taucci, age 17, immediately opened fire with a .38 revolver. Luiz Castro, 25, followed him inside. So began the eighth massacre in Brazilian schools since 2002.

Five students and two employees were killed that day. Many others who managed to survive were injured by bullets and an axe swung by the killers. After the police stormed the building, eight minutes in, Taucci killed Castro and then committed suicide.

Yet the bloody trail followed them even outside the school. Before the attack, both men had killed Tauccis uncle and stolen his car.

While the Suzano Massacre, as it came to be known, caused tremendous sorrow and grief, it gained little international attention. Yet the Suzano Massacre was destined to become part of the same web of international fascist violence that includes the massacres in Christchurch, Halle (Germany) and El Paso. While those shootings were all tied together by the website 8chan, Suzano became wrapped up in the sordid tale of a website similar to 8chan: Dogolachan.

In December, 2013, Marcelo Valle Silveira Mello founded Dogolachan on the surface web as a haven for his particular brand of free speech. He had been an active user of the social network Orkut since 2005, regularly posting his support for pedophilia and racism, and sharing pictures of violent crimes.

Prior to founding Dogolachan, Mello had a history of launching online hate campaigns. In 2009, he was the first person in Brazil to be formally condemned for the crime of racism. His lawyer successfully appealed, stating that his client had mental issues. Because of that, Mello avoided prison at that time.

Three years later, in 2012, Mello was finally arrested by Brazilian Federal Police (BFP)along with his cohort Emerson Setimfor a series of hateful websites they created and managed. These sites spread a bevy of racist and sexist articles directly aimed at several universities with articles like How to rape a girl at [insert University], attributing their authorship to various individuals the chan community considered their enemies, a tactic used to this day.

The websites were a form of an extremely high pressure harassment campaign targeting both people and institutions, disrupting classes and the well-being of said communities in coordinated efforts at intimidation that only grew over the years.

The equation of online anonymity as a weapon to be used against opponents, not to mention the excuse of humour and irony , all made worse by a lack of police power to monitor forums like these, resulted in a spike in hate websites. Safernet, a Brazilian non-governmental organization that combats Internet crime, says that at least five domains linked to Dogolachan users generated, in their lifespan, more than 160,000 complaints.

The BFP also stated that Marcelo and Emerson were planning a massacre against leftist students at the Universidade de Braslia (UNB). This planned shooting was inspired by the deadliest school massacre in Brazilian history; the murder of 12 children (including 10 girls) at the Tasso da Silveira Municipal School in Rio de Janeiro by a mentally ill man. The murderer had known links to online hate communities, like the ones frequented by Mello.

The duo spent a little over a year in federal prison and was released in May 2013. Just a few months later, they created Dogolachan.

The original picture that became the Dogola meme was snapped in Russia

Inspired by 4chan, 8chan, and numerous other chan-style image boards, the name Dogolachan is a reference to the dogola meme, a picture taken in Russia and embraced by Brazilians. It is frequently spammed in online discussions. The countrys online culture is known for its memes and online trolling.

While the dogola meme, as it is commonly known, was fairly innocuous in its Russian form, it quickly spread as a forced meme, winning the hearts of spammers and shitposters worldwide, especially in Brazil, where it became the visual basis for the mascot of the newly created chan.

From the beginning, the forum was a hate site on par with 8chans /pol board. It focused on inspiring and celebrating attacks, flamebaiting and trolling campaigns, with doxxing of women, minorities and leftists. Mello and his fellows on Dogolachan also advocated mass harassment of individuals they saw as enemies.

One such enemy is Dolores Aronovich, known publicly as Lola, an English literature professor at the Federal University of Cear and author of the most influential feminist blog in Brazil, online since 2008. For her advocacy in fighting against hate crimes in digital communities, Aronovich has received countless threats, mainly linked to mens rights activists or Dogolachan users. Aronovich was the inspiration behind a congresswomans bill, named after Lola herself, that allows the federal police to take over any investigation into online crime of a misogynistic nature. Aronovich was recently nominated for the 2019 Press Freedom Award by Reporters Without Borders.

Channers also celebrate mass shooters. This was a common practice on 8chans /pol board. They saluted shooters inspired by the board by declaring them Saints and co-opting religious iconography:

Likewise, on Dogolachan, users honour the saint acts (actum sanctus) of those they call saint men (homini sanctus), like Wellington Rodrigues, the perpetrator of the Rio de Janeiro Massacre. While the attacks inspired by this site have not garnered widespread global attention, Dogolachans users see themselves as members of an international movement, since they also award this title to foreign murderers, like Elliot Rodgers and Anders Breivik

On June 16, 2018, Dogolachan moderator Andr Luiz Gil Garcia, known online s Kyo, posted about his suicidal feelings. He then went out and sexually harassed a young woman, Luciana de Jesus do Nascimento. The womans response to the harassment was not to his liking, so he shot her in the back of the head as she tried to get away from him. Andr fled the scene and committed suicide when the police arrived. The victim would die twenty days later as a result of her injuries.

On the original thread, printed below, Anes (a self-deprecated version of the word anon that mingles its meaning with the Portuguese translation for people with dwarfism) lamented that Garcia had not been able to kill more women. In the months following the murder/suicide, the rhetoric on Dogolachan grew more violent and radical.

Translation: Kyo here folks. A note for everyone: I am quitting this world. The impures do not touch me. It was good while it lasted, but I have not been feeling a part of this world anymore. the sorrow I feel made me blue for life. To those that hurt me I curse you while searching for you in hell, I will be watching over the pure ones. Marcelo, when you get out of prison, be happy, something that I was never able to do.

Many of the members began referring to themselves as falhos, or flawed, a term which seems to have broadly similar connotations on Dogolachan as incel does in English-language chans. Falhos saw their lives as essentially over, and urged each other to take the scum with you or take the cattle with you, when committing suicide, as it is written in the highlighted part above.

8chans /pol board is well known for its role in inspiring at least three mass shootings. After the El Paso shooting in the summer of 2019, the website was forced off of the Internet under the weight of public outrage though it is doing its damnedest to come back.

Dogolachan is still online, albeit in the deep web due to Mello transferring control of the site to other people when he was sent to prison for a variety of crimes, including transmission of pedophilic images, incitement to commit crimes and terrorism.

After Mello was finally sentenced to 41 years behind bars, the chan, nonetheless, continued. Over the years, it has evolved its own repertoire of terror tactics that allow it to function as something very much like a melting pot for terrorists, creating an atmosphere of what some are calling stochastic terrorism.

The Suzano Massacre in March, 2019, for example, was carried out by two young men who are widely believedalthough not confirmedto have been channers. The only proof of their involvement are the statements made by one of the anonymous administrators in the forum itself on the day of the massacre, saying that the killers were definitely members. No further proof was presented, but the media was thirsty for any answers that could help complete the picture.

In the main Dogolachan board, /b/, journalists found a thread with a screengrab of a suspected secret board inside the forum. In the screengrab, dated seven days before the massacre, the killers thanked the administrator in helping them plan their rampage, stating they would post a secret warning in the form of music lyrics before acting. The screengrab and translation are as follows:

Translation: Thanks for the counseling and the orientation DPR (the administrator). We hope to not commit this act in vain. We, and mainly the precinct (Dogolachan) will be cited and remembered. We were born flawed but will go out as heroes. This contact brought us everything according to plan. We were flabbergasted with the quality, Hollywood like. Unfortunately there were no places to test and we will do it naturally, on the spot. Stay with God, my mentor. The sign will be music and 3 days later well be with God, together with our 7 virgins. We will take this message with us.

Two days before the shooting, someone translated and posted the lyrics of Foster The Peoples hit Pumped Up Kicks which is sung from the perspective of a troubled young person with homicidal thoughts and is frequently described as a song about school shootings and this was interpreted by the press and the Brazilian online community as a confirmation of their suspicions:

Even though no news outlet nor the police could confirm the existence of this secret board and its content, the attack is to this day connected to Dogolachan, which widely celebrated the massacre. The chan moderators claim that the audience of their deep web website (only accessible via a Tor browser) skyrocketed since Suzano due to the press bringing attention to their forum.

It is possible that members fabricated the connection between the chan and the massacre to achieve Lulz (basically, for fun). Its also possible they co-opted the shooting to raise the profile and notoriety of their site, so future threats made by members would be taken more seriously. Police investigating the Suzano case confirmed that the shooters were assisted in the planning stage by another minor (now detained) who did not participate in the attack, and who told journalists that the killers did not know what Dogolachan was.

This same tactic was used later, in August, when members of the forum planned to falsify the authorship of a school attack. They suggested members to retroactively create a fake post in order to bait the school, the police, and the press into believing a channer had forewarned his friends about an imminent massacre.

Its also known that the individuals involved were deeply influenced by the Columbine shooting, which has inspired dozens of copycat attacks around the world. Just this October, a Florida woman was arrested with 24 pipe bombs. Materials found at her house indicated an obsession with the crime.

Its important to remember that these massacres and threats of massacres are all part of a connected campaign of international fascist violence, even though the movement behind these killings is completely decentralized. It consists of different nodes, including 8chan and Dogolachan, which work in predictable ways. After Christchurch, 8chan users took to giving one another advice on weaponry and bomb-making tactics:

Meanwhile, in the immediate wake of the Suzano Massacre, a user on Dogolachan posted this question: How can I engage in such a Saint Act without money or guns?. The main collective wet dream of the channers, according to screengrabs provided by Lola Aronovich, is easier access to guns and ammunitions. Historically, these have been very hard to acquire legally in Brazil.

Translation of highlighted parts: Elliot Rodgers life was not in vain. It motivated others and opened the hearts for a beta uprising. Do not commit suicide yet, NOT NOW. Wait for Bolsonaro to legalize gun carryingDegeneration will always happen, and more and more will occur. Whenever youve done everything you want with your life, get a gun and shoot the scum. Die fighting the cops. And always shoot women to KILL. The life of a man has no value in matriarchal society. A 7/10 whore is worth more than a 1000 betas. The world revolves around them.

Those regulations are currently being relaxed by President Jair Bolsonaro. The far right politician was passionately supported by channers long before he even launched his campaign due to his history of hateful, misogynistic, racist and anti-left statements. Marcelo Mello, the founder, even created a fork of litecoin called Bolsocoin to be used by channers.

According to UOL, after Suzano, at least 18 universities throughout Brazil received threats of all types, mostly explained by the copycat effect. Not all of them could be directly linked to Dogolachan, but at least six have been independently confirmed by the authors as tracing back to the forum or its users.

In fact, Suzano is just another chapter in a broader campaign that Dogolachan users have embarked on since the original site owner began acting out in criminal ways in 2005. This harassment against individuals and institutions have been unprecedented in its scope and scale, at least in Brazil, as Safernet claims showed.

All the hyperlinks belowexcept for threeoriginated in the Brazilian press and were translated automatically by Google. This is just a selection of the most pertinent threats, not a comprehensive list:

Sept, 23, 2016: Federal University of Minas Gerais A Dogolachan user posts a direct threat, which includes a picture of the Columbine shooting and expresses a desire to target leftists. The perpetrator states his desire to kill men and torture women. Many students refuse to attend class, for several days. Security at the school is heightened.

May 29, 2017: New York City, Atlanta, Asheville (NC) Dozens of bomb threats are faxed to seemingly random businesses, demanding $25,000 in ransom. Emerson Setim (Mellos former partner) is identified in the faxes as the sender. But this is almost certainly not the case. Setim and Mello had a well-known falling out after their time in jail and these faxes were likely an act of revenge against Emerson. Several businesses are evacuated as a result of the threats.

March 21, 2019: Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul A threat written directly by someone posting in Dogolachan. After a post threatening a massacre somewhere in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a fellow channer suggests the UFRGS university as a target, citing supposed security breaches. Even though the institution does not cancel classes or activities, many teachers and students skip classes for several days. Security is reinforced.

April 10, 2019: Federal University of Paran Threat directly written by someone posting in Dogolachan, showing a picture of a handgun and listing places where the purported shooter planned to execute black people, women, and people with AIDS. All classes are postponed for one day.

June 8 2019: Federal University of Pernambuco Threat directly written by someone posting in Dogolachan. Targets leftist students and claimed to have an AR-15 to kill the stoners that criticize Bolsonaro. Classes are not postponed, but many students choose to skip classes.

June 16, 2019: Federal University of Espirito Santo Threat directly written by someone posting in Dogolachan. Shows an image of a handgun and of known places at said university, targeting leftist students. Security is reinforced, and more students choose to skip classes.

October 14, 2019:UNICARIOCA (CARIOCA UNIVERSITY) A small private university in Rio receives direct threats of a massacre via Dogolachan. A Dogolachan user says they would go to campus to supposedly get revenge on everyone who bullied them, showing off pictures of weapons.

The anons of Dogolachan have committed far fewer killings than their ideological comrades on 8chans /pol board. Even their supposed milestone crime the Suzano school massacre is not confirmed to have been their doing.

But despite a relative lack of actual violence on their record, Dogolachans users have managed to mount a high pressure campaign of harassment against their enemies. Universities and businesses have been shut down, classes disrupted, and lives severely impacted by a mixture of coordinated attacks from its core members and a decentralized campaign of intimidation against generalized foes, such as leftists, women or any progressive figure.

What Dogolachan seems to have done, very successfully, is to build a reputation that other disaffected and violent people identify with. This has allowed them to outsource their brand and their portfolio of attacks in the press and social media. Now individuals make threats in Dogolachans name simply because they know they will get a reaction. We see evidence of this with the template threat copied by a criminal that menaced the Federal University of Gois (UFG).

In this, the anes of Dogolachan may have found a way to artificially magnify the ghosts of past massacres, in Brazil and elsewhere. They celebrate this reputation in much the same manner 8chan has done, by adopting the slogan Embrace Infamy. For Dogolachan, even unfulfilled threats produce real consequences to real people and institutions. Given the difficulty of acquiring firearms in Brazil, it may be statistically unfounded to fear massive attacks like El Paso or Poway from Dogolachans users. But countless anes are waiting in the wings for laxer gun laws, so they can graduate from threats to body counts.

We need to talk about slaverys impact on all of us – The Guardian

When my new role as professor of the history of slavery at the University of Bristol was announced, some peoples reaction was, about time. The role, in which I will research the universitys ties with enslavement, will bring together various existing scholarships, and is part of a debate that has been taking place for decades.

But in further exploring the past of the institution within the broader history of the city, I hope to help the public as well as the university to better understand its place, role and responsibilities towards Bristols inhabitants. My research should have a significant impact on the way educational and cultural institutions remember the past, and how they support social equality now.

Universities such as Georgetown, Yale and Harvard in the US, and Glasgow, Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, are already looking at how they benefited from the labour of enslaved people. It is crucial, however, that the University of Bristols approach is different, because the history of the city is so different.

Academic research into Bristols involvement in enslavement started nearly four decades ago. It has taken a long time for those findings to reach a broader audience, but now, thanks to a growing demand for more inclusive narratives of the past that reflect the diversity of the nation, they will. Students and activists, within and outside these universities, have played a huge role in persuading institutions to look at stories of subjugation of human beings in their histories.

These debates are linked to broader, important discussions about colonialism and the legacies of the past. I often hear that slavery and colonialism led to vibrant, culturally diverse societies. It is certainly not what colonisers and slave traders were hoping to achieve when they funded vessels to sail the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, though diversity has indeed been one result. Our celebrated, culturally diverse societies are, however, rigged with racism, social inequalities and discrimination.

Protest about those legacies and the representation of that past have increased in recent years. We have seen demonstrations about the Confederate flag in the US, and the Rhodes Must Fall movement, both in South Africa and Oxford. Embedded in the history of enslavement are economic, social, cultural, political and ideological ideas that shape the way we represent the past. Countries, cities and communities all reshape their own urban and rural landscapes in different ways to tell their stories and showcase their histories and identities.

These campaigns have challenged the way we memorialise a past that is the source of intergenerational trauma what the scholar Marianne Hirsch called post-memory.

The important question now is: what should societies, cities and institutions do to address the impact of slavery a history that has led to such trauma and division? These questions are part of Bristols broader response to its past, and the answer, as I see it, involves a conversation about reparations or reparative justice.

My plan in Bristol is to start by looking at donors who funded the university. The university was created in 1909, long after the abolition of the slave trade (1807) and the abolition of slavery (1833). The University College was set up in 1876, and from the very beginning it received the support of an educator called John Percival, who sought financial support among his circle.

Lewis Fry, a businessman from a prominent anti-slavery family, got on board in 1906. Two years later, donations were made by the Wills family, who made their fortune in various trading ventures, including tobacco produced by enslaved people in North America. Soon after that, the Merchant Venturers College agreed to fund the new engineering faculty. The Merchant Venturers was a guild whose members traded extensively in what was called the African trade. That trade funded slave voyages, bought and sold African captives, invested in plantations and so on.

I suspect there are a number of small businesses and individuals who also gave a helping hand through various donations. I want to find out who they were and how much they donated. If possible, I want to know where that money went and what other investments were made with those funds.

This is about the university but also about the city as a whole, and it will be very important to share my research every step of the way with various communities. The African Caribbean community is central, and I will talk to them about what is learned as we go along, working together to see how we can use the findings to teach that history at various levels. We must also look at the contribution of people of African descent. Their ancestors labours produced wealth that enriched the city, including the university.

I want to be part of this new episode in the history of the city for several reasons. I have been working on the history of Bristol for nearly two decades, and I have made comparative studies between Bristol and other European cities. I have looked at questions of memory, memorialisation and colonial legacies on both sides of the Atlantic. Bristol has gone through incredible changes since the 1990s. It is important that we continue to challenge urban representations of the past, and reinvent the way we look at the memory of enslavement, for example through guerrilla arts and graffiti.

The passion that African-Caribbean communities have put into telling their stories for decades is impressive. From the work done by the Malcolm X Elders, the Kuumba Project, and the Black South West Network to Michael Jenkins work in film revealing the untold stories of Bristolians, Michele Curtiss celebratory Seven Saints of St Pauls murals and the poignant art installation, CARGO, by Lawrence Hoo, Bristolians have found wonderful ways to tell the stories of changes within the city.

These stories need to be embedded in the timeline of the history of the city. It is happening now and it says something profound about where the city is heading. We are working towards social justice. We must also use the narratives, methods and material of that community and other community groups to rethink the way we teach history. The Centre for Black Humanities at the University of Bristol, the first of its kind in the south-west, is the ideal place to bring this work together.

The centre is one of many reasons I wanted to work on this project. The other important reason is the University of Bristols commitment to relocalising teaching and learning to a campus that will be located close to underprivileged communities. This is an opportunity that will allow those communities better access to higher education.

There will be challenges, but those are part of the healing process. A citys memory is truly collective when each community has found ways to acknowledge the past and address the social inequalities created by it. What is happening now in Bristol is truly inspirational. Its history in the making.

Science, Scientism, and Magic – Discovery Institute

Editors note: Phillip E. Johnson, Berkeley law professor and author ofDarwin on Trialand other books, died on November 2.Reproduced below, his Foreword to John Wests collection, The Magicians Twin: C.S. Lewis on Science, Scientism, and Society, was among his last writings.

C.S. Lewiss many admirers will be eager to read this collection of articles, collected and edited by Discovery Institutes John West, concerning Lewiss views of science, which he respected, and scientism, against which he warned. The book contains a timely and well-reasoned chapter about Lewis and intelligent design, which seems to have replaced creationism as the alternative most feared and reviled by Darwinists. Another chapter describes the subtle interconnection between That Hideous Strength (my favorite Lewis novel) and his much admired philosophical work, The Abolition of Man.

As West notes in Chapter 1, C.S. Lewis remarked that [t]he serious magical endeavour and the serious scientific endeavour are twins an image that gives this book its title. Lewis meant that modern science and magic have a common starting point in history, arising from efforts to understand and manipulate nature, and they have retained important and perhaps unexpected similarities down to the present. His point makes me think of what scientific studies of identical twins, separated at birth and raised apart, have shown. Such studies consistently demonstrate that, aside from physical resemblance, when the twins first meet each other decades later, they display striking similarities in matters so unexpected and detailed that they seem eerie. It is as if the studies were aimed at proving that, despite all we have learned about the stars since 1600, astrology may nonetheless still have an impressive power of prediction.

Of course, the twin studies support genetics, not astrology, but what they teach us about identical twins raised apart makes it unsurprising that the scientific culture of the 19th and early 20th century produced three great wizards Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud whose concepts were so spellbinding that they set the intellectual agenda for the entire 20th century. In many ways, they still hold us in their grasp.

I would add to the list of scientific magicians the DNA is everything biologists, including the brilliant popularizer Richard Dawkins and the physicalist neuroscientists who assure us that our thoughts and decisions (including the conclusions of neuroscientists?) are no more than the effects of electro-chemical events in the brain. These have sought to make science indistinguishable from scientism, and thus have inadvertently alerted us to the continuing importance of C.S. Lewiss exposure of the irrationality of scientism.

Overall, this collection charms the reader, not because Lewis has necessarily said the final word on every subject covered, but because his perceptive words illuminate every subject and inspire discussion in which participants can employ their own intellects to move ever closer to the truth.

Migrant Workers Rally to Call for an End to the Broker System – New Bloom

by Brian Hioe:EnglishPhoto Credit: TIWA/Facebook

MIGRANT WORKERS rallied last Sunday outside representative offices in Taipei, calling for an abolition to the current broker system and the institution of direct hiring practices.

While migrant worker groups have been calling for an abolition of the broker system for years, the demonstration Sunday was notable as a coordinated action between migrant workers from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Migrant workers staged separate protests outside the Indonesia Economic and Trade Office, the Manila Cultural and Economic Office, and the Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office, all of which are located in Taipei.

Migrant worker groups see the current broker system, in which broker agencies arrange for migrant workers transportation to and employment in Taiwan as exploitative. Broker agencies often impose exorbitant work placement fees on migrant workers. Migrant workers are charged fees between 20,000 NT and 100,000 NT in order to secure employment and there oftentimes is no consistency in how migrant workers are charged fees. Migrant workers that come at different times may be charged different fees for a similar work placement. The fees imposed on migrant workers differ based on what profession they work in, as well as what country they come from.

Migrant workers unable to pay such fees are usually referred to loan agencies by broker agencies. Late payments can result in penalties based on a promissory note, with loan agencies sometimes not having to explain how penalties were calculated. Broker agencies sometimes also charge migrant workers for board and lodging, forcing migrants to pay them for something that is actually provided by their employer.

Migrant workers already work long hours for low pay, regardless of whether they work as caregivers, domestic workers, factory workers, or as inshore or offshore fishermen, these being the four major categories of migrant workers in Taiwan.

Migrant workers are not subject to the provisions of the Labor Standards Act, meaning that migrant workers are sometimes paid less than minimum wagesometimes less than 18,000 NT a month. Migrant workers are usually given very few days off, if any at all, regardless of whether they work in Taiwanese households, in factories, or on fishing vessels, and they are often expected to work around the clock.

As such, having to pay expensive work placement fees or to pay back loans taken out in order to pay work placements simply proves another way of forcing migrant workers into conditions resembling indentured servitude more than anything else.

Past demonstrations by migrant worker groups have involved protests outside the Taiwanese Ministry of Labor, alongside Taiwanese workers on International Workers Day, and outside representative offices in Taipei. In these past demonstrations, migrant worker groups of differing nationalities have worked together to collaborate on joint actions, along with their Taiwanese counterparts. However, it is an unusual protest to see coordinated protests taking place outside of three representative offices in Taiwan, whether regarding migrant issues or other issues.

Migrant workers groups have in past years called for direct government-to-government hiring, which is referred to in shorthand as a G-to-G system to replace the current broker system. At the same time, the Taiwanese government has been reluctant to abolish the broker system. In past years, the Tsai administration has claimed that the broker system exists because of a market need for such a mechanism. In reality, broker agencies are only allowed to continue to exist because of the close ties that broker agencies enjoy with the statedespite flagrant violations of the law. The Taiwanese government also claims that the current broker system is simply more convenient for employers, who prefer to go through such a system, despite that it could easily set up its own mechanisms to addressing the issue.

Indeed, efforts by migrant worker groups and migrant worker advocacy groups to push with reform have encountered obstacles. Apart from the fact that government-organized forums on the issue of broker agencies have proved more performative than anything else, a draft bill that sought to extend the amount of time that foreign caregivers are allowed to work in Taiwan did not clear the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee of the Legislative Yuan after disagreements between DPP and KMT lawmakers. One generally expects that it will continue to be an uphill struggle to push for the abolition of the broker system in Taiwan.

No work but teacher training institutes in KP eat up Rs1bn – DAWN.com

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwas 21 regional institutes for teacher education have eaten up around Rs1 billion during the last two years despite an end to its only job of pre-service teacher training in 2016.

The government had done away with the condition of RITE training for appointment as teacher in 2016 but over 600 employees of the institutes continue to draw salary, sources told Dawn.

They said 300 of those employees held BPS 17-20 positions.

The sources said after the abolition of the pre-service training, the government had appointed untrained teachers and provided them with training thereafter.

They said the RITEs used to offer two-year training in associate degree in education (ADE) and one year in drawing master, while their annual salary and non-salary budget totaled around Rs500 million.

CM adviser says RITEs to be abolished

The sources said since the condition of professional degrees in teaching was not necessary for the teachers appointment, the elementary and secondary education department had decided to abolish the RITEs considering them to be a burden on kitty.

They said the Provincial Institute for Teacher Education (PITE) provided the required on-job training to teachers.

All staff members come to the institute just for marking attendance as they have no duty to perform, one of the RITE heads told Dawn. He said as directed by the elementary and secondary education department, the RITEs had stopped enrolling candidates for training since 2017.

We have no training programme and often learn from newspapers that the government is going to abolish RITEs, he said.

The elementary and secondary education department had moved a summary to the provincial restructuring committee some seven months ago for approval to abolish RITEs with valid reasons, sources said.

They said the restructuring committee had failed to take up the issue to stop the waste of taxpayers money.

The sources said some influential heads of RITEs having political background had approached the authorities at the helm of affairs to stop it just to take salary without performing duty.

They said the RITE heads had also approached the chief minister through many members of the provincial assembly against the abolition of RITEs.

The sources said the abolition of RITEs would not deprive their employees of job as they were teachers and clerks of the education department working there as part of the department and that they all would be transferred to schools.

When contacted, adviser to the chief minister on elementary and secondary education department Ziaullah Bangash said after the abolition of the condition to have professional degrees in teaching for the appointment, the existence of RITEs had no logic.

We are going to establish institutions at divisional level of the province to provide post-service training after abolishing RITEs, he said.

The adviser said millions of rupees would be saved to the provincial exchequer with the abolishment of RITEs.

He said teachers working in RITEs would be deployed at schools which were already short of teachers.
