Twenty five years after peace treaty: Jordan resumes control of enclaves leased to Israel – Haaretz

Twenty five years after the signing of the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace treaty, Israeli control over the Naharayim enclave has ended, and control of the area returned to Jordan on Saturday.

The final Israeli tour of the area took place Saturday, following failed diplomatic attempts to extend the clause of the treaty that gave Israel control of the enclave for 25 years.

At 4:30 P.M. the gate to the enclave was closed, and control returned to Jordan.

Under the terms of the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace treaty, the enclaves have been allowed to remain under Israeli control, but Jordan was given the option under the treaty to assume full control of both enclaves after 25 years. Last year, King Abdullah II of Jordan announcedthat he would exercise the option.

The Naharayim enclave includes 800 dunams (about 200 acres) of agricultural land, which have been worked by the Kibbutzim in the area for 70 years. The Naharayim enclave is also an area of importance to the tourism industry.

The Tzofar enclave, south of the Dead Sea, consists of 4,500 dunams of land of which about 1,100 dunams have been used for agricultural purposes by Israeli farmers, mostly to grow peppers.

Jordan's decision to reclaim control of the enclaves came amid anti-government protests against the Jordanian leadership based on economic and diplomatic issues, including the issue of the enclaves.

Dozens of members of parliament signed a petition that calling on the government not to extend Israeli control of the enclaves. Trade unions, which influence public opinion in Jordan, also joined in pressuring the government against extending Israeli control.

King Abdullah's announcement came as a surprise to the Israeli administration.

Jeremy Roenick Recalls a Wild Story of Golfing and Gambling With Michael Jordan – The Action Network

You could get into Michael Jordans pocket on the golf course back in the day, just dont challenge him on the court.

At least, thats the story former NHL star Jeremy Roenick is sticking with.

Speaking recently about a past golf bet with His Airness, the former Chicago Blackhawks forward recalled a full day of 36 holes on the links beers included before MJ played a home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The day started when Jordan asked (or told) Roenick to meet him at Sunset Ridge for an early 18-hole match.

We played a round, I beat him for a couple thousand and got ready to leave, Roenick said on the McNeil & Parkins Show, a Chicago-based sports radio program, as reported by Golf.com. Now, the Bulls are playing that night. They played Cleveland that night. Im thinking hes leaving, its 10:00. He goes, No, lets go play again.

So we go and fill up a bag full of ice and Coors Light and walk again. We roll around another 18 and I take him for another couple [thousand dollars]. Now weve been drinking all afternoon and hes going from Sunset Ridge to the stadium, to play a game. Im messing around. Im like, Im gonna call my bookie. All the money you just lost to me, Im putting on Cleveland.

Thats right. He dared suggest that hed bet against Jordan, even after a day of golf and drinking.

He goes, Ill tell you what, Roenick continued. Ill bet you that well win by 20 points and I have more than 40 [points]. Im like, Done. Son of a gun goes out and scores 52 and they win by 26 points or something.

The story may not have occurred exactly the way that Roenick tells it, but only a stickler lets facts get in the way of a good story. If Cleveland was the opponent, Jordan scored 40 or more points against the Cavaliers at home five different times in his career as a member of the Bulls and four times in the playoffs (in four of those games, he scored 50 or more). The Bulls didnt win any of those games by 20 or more points, but that means theres an 80% chance that Jordan was gambling and day drinking in Chicago before a playoff game.

Moral of the story? It didnt really matter what Jordan did before games, even if that included two full rounds of golf and a few bags of Coors Lights. He was still going to dominate when it mattered most.

Jim Jordan joins Intelligence Committee to boost Trump in public impeachment hearings – POLITICO

Jordan is the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, which has been one of the three committees conducting closed-door depositions with impeachment witnesses. Many Republicans see Jordan as a capable messenger and effective questioner.

And some GOP members have expressed frustration that some Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee have not been participating in all the depositions, unlike Jordan and some of Trumps other top allies. Transcripts of the interviews released this week show Crawford hasnt been asking many questions during the closed-door sessions.

McCarthy, who has sole discretion to appoint Republican members to the House Intelligence Committee, said, Rick will rejoin the committee and resume his work to keep our country safe once the impeachment probe wraps up.

Moving Jordan to House Intel is sure to please Trump, who has urged Republicans to get tough and fight harder for him in the impeachment battle. But because of the impeachment rules approved by the House, Jordan will get only one five-minute round of questioning, unless other rank-and-file members yield their time to him.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the ranking member on House Intel, will get at least one 45-minute round of questioning, but can only yield his time to staffers.

Jordan to resume control over land leased to Israel – The Irish Times

Jordans king has announced full sovereignty over two pieces of land leased by Israel, ending a 25-year arrangement which was part of the countries landmark peace agreement.

King Abdullah II said in a speech to the governments new cabinet that Jordan would end the annex of the two areas, Ghumar and Al-Baqoura, in the peace treaty and impose our full sovereignty on every inch of them.

Israel, which has controlled the lands for more than 70 years, had been permitted to lease the areas under the 1994 peace agreement.

One of the areas, a popular visitors site in northern Israel, is known in Hebrew as the Peace Island.

But with relations cool, the king announced earlier this year that he would end the lease, with Jordan set to reclaim full control of the areas this week.

The king said: I announce the end of the annex of the two areas, Ghumar and Al-Baqoura, in the peace treaty and impose our full sovereignty on every inch of them.

This development marks a new blow to relations that began with great optimism but have steadily deteriorated.

Following up on a historic interim peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians a year earlier, Israels then-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and the late King Hussein of Jordan signed a peace agreement on October 26th, 1994, delivering moving speeches promising warm relations and a better future.

It was only the second peace deal between Israel and an Arab country, following Egypt.

The accord remains a vital strategic asset for both countries, who maintain tight security co-operation and joint economic projects.

But with little progress towards a Palestinian state, the close contact has not trickled down to the average citizen especially in Jordan, where most people have Palestinian roots.

Israeli policies in east Jerusalem, where Jordan has custodial rights over Muslim holy sites, have also raised tensions. AP

Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan Just Debuted the Trump Circus Defense – Esquire

(Permanent Musical Accompaniment To The Last Post Of The Week From The Blogs Favourite Living Canadian)

Fridays Transcripts of the Day were those of Fiona Hill and Colonel Alexander Vindland, and, yes, they pretty much prove that the president* is as guilty as sin, even as his own sins, which are considerable. But the most entertaining parts of the new transcripts, and the sections that give us some kind of indication as to where the open hearings might go, are those featuring the floundering attempts by various Republicans to derail the proceedings in one way or another. And when it comes to Republican Flounders, theres no flounder more floundering than Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Breathalyzer), Republican of Florida.

You may recall that Gaetz was one of the leaders of the pack of Republican congresscritters who bum-rushed the secure area in which the depositions were held. In the latest transcripts, the actual moment of Gaetzs triumph, which occurred during Hills time before the committee, is captured. Intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff was having none of this, and pretty plainly wanted Gaetz to get up off of his last nerve.

In a related development, it was announced that Rep. Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio and dedicated follower of fashion, would be replacing Rep. Randy Crawford on the Intelligence Committee in next weeks public hearings. This was particularly well-timed since another witness came forward on Thursday night and accused Jordan of shrugging off molestation complaints against Ohio State doctor Richard Strauss when Jordan was the assistant wrestling coach at the school. From NBC News:

Oh, its going to be a show, no doubt about it. And, at the end of it, the president* is still going to be guilty as sin.

Michael Bloomberg is going to launch his campaign in Alabama. He is the billionaire former mayor of New York City whose primary issue is gun control, and who's most notable for attempts to ban the Big Gulp. Meanwhile, African-American citizens in NYC dislike and distrust him because of his defense of the Stop-and-Frisk tactics that led to abuse by the NYPD. And that word has got around. Exactly who would his constituency be in Alabama? His primary voting bloc seems to remain wealthy cable news stars and their many friends. Lord, though, its hard to tell whether the ownership class is more frightened of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, or Joe Bidens cerebral cortex. He is not a serious factor in the Democratic primary. Read the damn room, people.

By the way, John Bolton is in this thing for the book deal. Nothing more.

The president* had a bit of a nutty in his driveway on Friday. The highlight was when he claimed he barely knew Ambassador Gordon Sondland, the middleman in the Ukraine scheme. I know Ive forgotten more than a few people who have given me $1 million. Its tragic, is what it is. Also, he might go to Moscow so Vladimir Putin can show him all the big boom-booms the Russians have. QUIET!!!!!!

Wizards Hachimura is poised to be a breakout star for Jordan Brand – Bullets Forever

Rui Hachimura is a regular starter for the Washington Wizards. Here in the D.C. area. hes viewed as a supporting cast member to Bradley Beal. Outside of the U.S., hes the face of the Washington Wizards.

(Sounds eerily similar to a couple Mystics forwards, but I digress. Thats another topic for another day.)

Anyway, Hachimura is signed with Nikes Jordan Brand, but he wont simply be wearing Jumpman logo shoes. According to ESPNs Nickj DePaula, the brand wants to make Hachimura a global ambassador for the brand. Jordan Brand also intends to incorporate Hachimura into product launches around the Tokyo Olympics next year.

Im really happy to see the impact Hachimura is beginning to make on the marketing end for Jordan Brand. He is also playing at a high level for the Wizards in his own right, and that will help him increase his impact globally and around here in the D.C. area as well.

Raiders sign DJ Swearinger and Dion Jordan; place Joseph on IR and waive Poling – Raiders.com

ALAMEDA, Calif. The Oakland Raiders have signed free agents DE Dion Jordan and S D.J. Swearinger, the club announced Saturday.

Swearinger, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound safety, was originally selected in the second round (57th overall) by the Houston Texans in the 2013 NFL Draft. Swearinger spent two seasons with the Texans and has since made stops with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015), Arizona Cardinals (2015-16, 2019) and Washington Redskins (2017-18). Over his seven-year career, he has appeared in 94 contests and made 70 starts, compiling 383 tackles (292), 4.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Most recently with the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, Swearinger started all four of his appearances and collected 28 tackles (17 solo) and one pass defensed. In 2018, he started in 15 games, the second consecutive season that he started all appearances after starting 16 games in 2017. He totaled 53 stops last year and matched career highs with two sacks, four interceptions, 10 passes defensed and three forced fumbles. Swearingers 11 interceptions since 2016 are tied for second-most among NFL safeties.

Jordan was originally a first-round selection (third overall) by the Miami Dolphins in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent two years with Miami and appeared in 26 games, making one start. Jordan spent the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. In corresponding moves, the Raiders placed S Karl Joseph on the Reserve/Injured List and waived LB Quentin Poling.

Joseph started all nine contests for the Raiders this season, compiling 48 stops (37), one interception, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery. In Week 9, he sealed a Raiders victory over Detroit with a pass defensed in the end zone and again clinched a win for the club in Week 10 with an interception in the games final seconds against the Chargers.

If Michael Jordan believes NBA players are paid to play 82 games, he’s extremely wrong – For The Win

You would think the rest of the NBA had learned.

Everyones just watched years of LeBron James, Golden State Warriors players and Kawhi Leonard win titles.

What do they all have in common, aside from the top talent pool in the league? They all spent time resting during the regular season. When the postseason came, their legs were fresh enough to make a run to a ring.

Yet here we are once again, in the middle of a debate over whether load management is good for the league. On one end, you have organizations using analytics and data to figure out when a star player needs a break during an arduous 82-game season. Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle just talked about the GPS devices during practice that help him figure it out.

And then theres this quote from Orlando Magic head coach Steve Clifford, who cited his former Charlotte Hornets boss Michael Jordan regarding rest. From the New York Daily News:

Our guys arent used to sitting on the second game of a back-to-back. Were not sitting guys just to sit, Clifford said. For me, my background frankly, it all goes back to expectations. Being with Michael in Charlotte, Michael used to tell them every year, youre paid to play 82 games.

If thats really Jordans philosophy, then hes just another dinosaur in a league full of them.

Players arent paid to play 82 games. Sure, theyre paid to practice and work hard and play harder. But theyre paid to win championships. That should be all an NBA franchise and its fans care about.

Im baffled that with so much proof in front of us Leonard played only 60 time in 2019 and then became Kawhi The Best Player in the NBA in the postseason and there are people like New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale spitting out phrases like this load management crap. Maybe thats coach speak meant to make an owner dishing out millions to players happy.

But if thats really what he and MJ and so many others believe? Then the coaches arent doing right by their owners at all, and Jordan will struggle to get the Hornets to contention. Running a player into the ground (in the case of the Knicks, its the heavy usage of their young No. 3 draft pick R.J. Barrett, who looks like a future star) is a great way to destroy an investment into a player, the opposite of what an owner would want.

Its tied into the bizarre nostalgia that so many former players and fans have tied into the league, where the idea that load management means soft.

The truth is the league like the rest of the sports world has evolved. And those who have evolved with it have won championships.

Everyone else is going to be left in the dust until they catch up.

Where the heck has Jordan Travis been all season? – 247Sports

FSU QB Jordan Travis celebrates TD (Photo: Paul Rutherford, USA TODAY Sports)

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. For nine games, Florida State fans wondered what the Kendal Brilesoffense would look like with a true running threat at quarterback.

We got a glimpse of it when Cam Akers went wild in the WildCam against Syracuse. But largely, it felt like Briles was confined with personnel and game planning for most of the year...partially because his options at quarterback were not optimally tailored to what he wants to do as a play caller.

This is not meantasa slight to James Blackman or Alex Hornibrook. Weve seen them each put together some good performances against conference teams this year. Heck, Blackman had 346 passing yards on just 26 attempts and two scores in yesterdays 38-31 win over Boston College.

But theemergenceof Jordan Travis as a runner stole the show. The redshirt freshman was on the bench all season, with his biggest contribution coming as a scout-team signal caller.

Then on Saturday, Travis ripped touchdown runs of 26 and 66 yards on just three carries.

Watching the Louisville transfer juke past defenders, stick his foot in the ground and burst upfield was electrifying. In just a few seconds of playing time, Travis carries provided hope for the fan base, but they couldve also created confusion, caused some resentment or just provoked you to laugh at how absurd it was that this guy didnt touch the ball before Game 10.

It was a hell of a thing.

He was working all week getting reps, said Akers, who was the only FSU running back to get a touch in the game. Just to see him come out and dominate the run game like that, you know, that's just crazy. That's amazing to me. He came out and I think he rushed for 100 yards, three carries, two touchdowns. That just speaks for itself.

Travis finished with three carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. His first career touch was the 26-yard touchdown, and his third carry sealed the game by giving FSU a two-score cushion with a minute remaining in the contest.

It was refreshing to see what Briles space-and-pace offense can do with a mobile quarterback. Blackman guided the Seminoles to a strong showing on offense after he was antsy early on, and I imagine hes QB1 going forward, but Travis undoubtedly gave the offense a spark and will potentially open up the playbook in the remaining two games of the regular season.

It begs the question...where has Travis been all season?

Remember, Travis transferred into FSU for the spring semester after he left Louisville. He struggled throughout spring practice, but had a bright showing in the spring game. Then a knee injury limited him in fall camp, and FSU went most of that offseason unsure if he would receive his eligibility waiver.

The waiver was granted, but Travis never played. Not one snap in a sub-package all season. I was told that he hadnt mastered the offense at a high enough level to see vie for reps at quarterback, a position that was unfortunately complicated by the consistent indecision of Willie Taggart.

In truth, I dont have a great reason for why Travis never played. But after yesterday, its fair to question the decision to leave him on the sideline all year and view his lack of playing time even if it was in a run-based capacity as a major misstep.

After the game, interim head coach Odell Haggins was asked when he knew Travis would be part of the game plan for this contest.

"I told Kendal Briles. He said something to me about it. I said, 'Kendal, run your offense. You make that decision. Let's go with it. I'll support you, Haggins said. And I went to Jordan, fist-bumped him, 'Hey, you a Seminole, brother. Our standards here are very high. You get in there, you make the plays, you do what you supposed to do.' And left it at that.'"

The answer felt telling. At the least, Haggins was giving Briles his blessing to run the offense in the exact way he felt fit.

To be clear, I dont believe that was the case for Briles most of the season. It certainly wasn't against Wake Forest,

Perhaps Briles himself wasnt sure if Travis was ready to contribute until yesterday. We wont know for sure until we talk to Briles later this week.

But I do know that Briles offense runs its best with a quarterback who can run. I had a staffer tell me as much back when Briles was hired as the offensive coordinator in December. And I know there was internal excitement when FSU landed Travisa few days later. Walk-on quarterback Wyatt Rector has apparently flashed in practice as well as a dual-threat QB, and I believe FSU wants to continue to stockpile this type of QBs as long as Briles is with the program.

Travis apparently showed glimpses of being a dynamic runner in practice, but to be fair, I dont think anyone was quite expecting what we on Saturday.

You cant really tackle quarterbacks in practice anyway, so it was more like wow, maybe we wouldve missed some of those tackles in practice, safety Hamsah Nasirildeen joked. We tap him and tell him we got him, we got him. But, shoot. You see what he did. Two touches, two touchdowns.

In a year full of what-ifs, the stellar late-season debut of Travis has to be right up there. For him to enter the lineup for the first time in less than a week after the head coach was fired, and then to do that? Like I said, its a hell of a thing.

But Trump and his Republican allies in the Capitol have made the whistleblower a central part of their defense, casting doubts about the figure's political motivations even as they readily acknowledge they don't know the person's identity.

In an investigation as weighty as impeachment, they argue, Trump has the right to face his accuser.

The anonymous whistleblower has alleged that Trump had compromised national security in asking Ukrainian leaders to find dirt on the president's domestic political adversaries an accusation that led Democrats to launch their impeachment inquiry in late September. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Early in the impeachment process, Schiff had expressed interest in having the whistleblower testify. Since then, Democrats have said that testimony is unnecessary, since a number of subsequent witnesses have backed up the allegations at the center of theinitial complaint.

After weeks of closed-door depositions guiding their impeachment probe, Democrats plan to shift the process to the public square next week, scheduling a series of open hearings with witnesses who have already testified in private. Last week, the House had passed a package of rules governing that open-hearing process, including provisions that allow Republicans to subpoena their own witnesses with the approval of the whole committee. The latter stipulation essentially grants the majority Democrats veto power over any witness request they deem to be out of bounds.

Russell Westbrook is still in the process of settling into a comfortable groove with his new squad in the Houston Rockets, but even with the change of uniforms, his aura both on and off the floor have remained the same. The tunnel still acts as a pregame fashion runway, and the triple double machine still delivers his aggressive play on the hardwood continuing to fill up the stat sheet night in and night out. And with Westbrooks 31st birthday set to arrive next week, Jordan Brand looks to celebrate the former MVPs special day with a brand new colorway of his signature Jordan Why Not Zer0.2. Fittingly dubbed the Scorpio colorway as a nod to his zodiac sign, the hoops-ready silhouette comes engineered with a mixture of black suede and leather overlays, allowing the striking accents of amarillo and and crimson red sprawled throughout to provide a healthy dose vibrant contrast. You can expect these to drop on his actual birthday on November 12th for $130 USD on Nike.com and at select retailers, so grab a closer look here below while you wait on their release.

NIA Mourns the Loss of Dr. Huber Warner – National Institute on Aging

Huber R. Warner, Ph.D., a biochemist who led NIAs Biology of Aging Program, passed away suddenly on September 12 in St. Paul, Minn., at the age of 83.

Dr. Warner joined NIA in 1984 where he managed the Molecular Biology Program while also serving as chief, Biochemistry and Metabolism Branch. In January, 2000 he was named associate director of the NIA Biology of Aging Program. Warner played a large part in expanding the scope and scale of aging research at the NIA, while helping to mentor a new generation of scientists. His research interests included oxidative stress, molecular mechanisms of apoptosis, functional genomics and stem cells.

Huber was not only a well-respected scientist and leader in our field, but his gentle nature made him beloved by both the community and his colleagues, said Dr. Felipe Sierra, director of the NIA Division of Aging Biology (DAB).

Dr. Dick Sprott, Warners predecessor at the NIA DAB, said Dr. Warner served with diligence and great scientific acumen. While his insights were important for the biology of aging field, we will remember him for leadership and common sense. I, like many others, will always treasure his sound advice and friendship.

Dr. Richard Hodes, director of the NIA said The entire NIA family is saddened by the loss of Dr. Warner. He helped guide and grow the study of aging biology at the NIH and NIA with a steady hand and curious mind, and will be deeply missed.

Warner was born in 1936 in Glendale, Ohio. He received a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Michigan in 1962, and following postdoctoral work at M.I.T., he joined the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minn., in 1964. He was a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America.

After leaving NIA in 2004, he returned to the University of Minnesota, where he served as associate dean of research until his retirement in 2010. He spent his later years at the Universitys independent living community, and returned often with family to his beloved Cawaja Beach in Ontario, Canada. Warner was known for his many athletic interests and as an enthusiastic volunteer coach for youth sports. He played hockey growing up, and tennis in his later years, and was a member of the NIH Tennis and Sailing clubs.

A memorial service celebrating Warner will be held on Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota. He is survived by sons Geoffrey and Peter; daughter-in-law Dawn; and 3 granddaughters: Chloe, Laurel and Alexandra.

People interested in honoring Warner can make a tax-deductible donation to the "Huber Warner Fellowship in Molecular Biology, which supports a talented graduate student studying the mechanisms of aging. Donations can be made online or by sending a check to:

New approach uses light to stabilize proteins for study – University of Illinois News Bureau

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Researchers have developed a new technique that uses light to control the lifetime of a protein inside the cell. This method will allow scientists to better observe how specific proteins contribute to health, development and disease.

Previous techniques for controlling protein levels involved adding chemicals that degrade specific proteins, said University of Illinois biochemistry professor Kai Zhang, who led the new research. Using light, a method called optogenetics, is a more efficient, nontoxic way to control protein levels, Zhang said.

In earlier optogenetics approaches, scientists modified specific proteins so that shining a light on the cell caused the proteins to break down, Zhang said.

We wanted to develop a system where you can stabilize rather than degrade a target protein using light, said Payel Mondal, a graduate student in the Zhang lab. This can have applications in cancer where you want to stabilize a cancer inhibitor.

Proteins are activated in cells in different ways. The researchers wanted to ensure that their method would work on any protein of interest.

The teams new technique, called GLIMPSe, involves attaching a short peptide sequence, called a degron, to the target protein that signals the cell to degrade it. Light triggers the cell to remove the degron, thus rescuing the protein from degradation. This technique allows scientists to study what happens when a protein is present or absent in the cell, or when it is present at lower and higher levels.

The researchers modified two kinds of proteins: a kinase and a phosphatase.

If you activate the kinase, it will direct the cell to differentiate into a neuronal cell line, Zhang said. If you activate the phosphatase, it will block that differentiation.

We demonstrated that the stability of two different classes of proteins can be controlled using light, Mondal said. We saw protein stabilization within 30 minutes of using the light.

One of the limitations of this system is that once the protein is rescued, we have no further ability to control its levels, Zhang said. Eventually, the cell will degrade the protein.

The researchers are working to develop new techniques to further extend their control.

The findings are the result of a long-term collaboration with Jing Yang, a University of Illinois comparative biosciences professor and a co-author of the paper.

We started looking at embryonic development and Professor Yang had a very detailed study of how the degron worked, Zhang said. By bridging embryonic development with synthetic biology, we created new tools.

Zhangs team is studying how to control protein stability after its optogenetic rescue and how to use this technique to study embryonic development.

The new findings are reported ACS Synthetic Biology.

The National Institutes of Health supported this work.

Axcella Presents Data at The Liver Meeting Providing New Mechanistic Insights on Observed Multifactorial Effects of its Liver Product Candidates -…

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Axcella Health (Nasdaq: AXLA), a biotechnology company pioneering the research and development of novel interventions to address dysregulated metabolism and support health, today announced that it will present new data on the companys liver product candidates at The Liver MeetingTM, the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), being held this week in Boston. Two poster presentations highlight mechanistic data from preclinical and non-IND clinical studies of two of its investigational candidates, AXA1665 and AXA1125.

Simultaneous dysregulation in multiple pathways is a fundamental feature of complex diseases such as hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), explains Dr. Manu Chakravarthy, M.D., Ph.D., Axcellas SVP of Clinical Development and Chief Medical Officer. In order to effectively address these conditions, a safe, multifactorial approach is required. We are excited to share our latest clinical findings, which both affirm and deepen our mechanistic understanding of the ways in which AXA1665 and AXA1125 may impact key biochemical and molecular pathways.

Poster #0432 showcases the distinctive pharmacokinetic profile of AXA1665, as compared to a standard protein supplement, with improved nitrogen and ammonia handling by AXA1665 in subjects with hepatic insufficiency.

Poster #2134 further delineates mechanisms underlying the previously reported observations of AXA1125 from a non-IND clinical study.

Further information is contained in the aforementioned posters at AASLD:

About Endogenous Metabolic Modulators

Endogenous metabolic modulators (EMMs) are a broad family of molecules, including amino acids, which fundamentally impact and regulate human metabolism. Our AXA Candidates are comprised of EMMs that individually have a history of safe use as food. We believe that, unlike conventional targeted interventions currently used to address dysregulated metabolism, EMM compositions have the potential to directly and simultaneously modulate multiple metabolic pathways implicated both in complex diseases and overall health.

About Non-IND Clinical Studies

Axcella conducts Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved, non-investigational new drug application (Non-IND) clinical studies in humans with its AXA Candidates under U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations and guidance supporting research with food. In these studies, Axcella evaluates in humans, including in individuals with disease, AXA Candidates for safety, tolerability and effects on the normal structures and functions of the body. Non-IND, IRB-Approved Clinical Studies are not designed or intended to evaluate an AXA Candidates ability to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent a disease. If Axcella decides to further develop an AXA Candidate as a potential therapeutic, subsequent studies will be conducted under an IND.
