EAC’s 24th annual Student Chemistry Adventure brings chemistry to life – Eastern Arizona Courier

THATCHER Eastern Arizona Colleges Chemistry Department welcomed 74 high school students and their teachers to the 25th annual Student Chemistry Adventure. Twenty-one unique teams from high schools across Arizona enjoyed a day filled with chemistry.

Teams composed of three to four students competed against each other while rotating through three separate chemistry activities. The Industrial Laboratory competition was led by Jing Lin, senior chemist at Freeport-McMoRan, and Duane DeSpain, EAC biology instructor, with assistance from five additional FMI scientists.

The Knowledge and Speed competitions, where students had 55 minutes to complete several short chemistry projects, concluded the activities. At the end of the tournaments, each participant was presented with a copper puck souvenir courtesy of FMI.

After a lunch provided by Sodexo Food Service, students and teachers congregated in the Math/Science Building, where an array of other colorful, loud, bright and exciting chemical demonstrations were given.

Dr. Phil McBride, EAC dean of instruction, recognized the participants and expressed thanks to the high school chemistry teachers for their efforts in providing quality instruction to their students.

The Atoms Family of Safford High School, composed of Danny John, Summer Dahlquist-Tookey, Dalton Henrie and Statton Baldwin, received first-place medals and a team plaque.

Second-place medals and a team plaque went to the Morenci Cu Cats composed of Ernest Arvizo, Matthew Porter, Skyler Howard and Andrew Stavast.

Third-place medals and a team plaque went to NaCl from Thatcher High School, composed of Katie Baldwin, Maya Baldwin and Marc Terry.

McBride, DeSpain and Joel Shelton, another of EACs chemistry instructors, expressed a special thanks to high school teachers Joni Giacomino (Douglas), Becky Bell (Duncan), Dana Olson (Fort Thomas), Kristy Roberts (Morenci), Heidi Vosbein (Mt. Graham), Carol Hawkins (Pima), Brian J. Bruessel (Safford) and Ty White (Willcox) for their teaching expertise and dedication to their students.

Matt Johnson: ‘Good chemistry’ with a very bad guy – Topeka Capital Journal

When he was head of the Egyptian armed forces in 2013, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi orchestrated a coup that overthrew his countrys first democratically elected government. After he succeeded in ripping President Mohamed Morsi and his allies out of power, Sisi promptly launched a merciless spree of violence and intimidation against the Muslim Brotherhood (the Islamist organization of which Morsi was a member) and any other group the new regime regarded as a threat. This campaign culminated in the Rabaa massacre in August 2013 a sustained military assault on pro-Morsi protesters who had set up a camp in eastern Cairo and demonstrated there for a month and a half.

According to Human Rights Watch, heavily armed Egyptian forces including helicopters, armored personnel carriers, bulldozers and snipers arrived in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 14, 2013. They almost immediately opened fire on the protesters. Men, women and children were gunned down indiscriminately HRW reports that army troops and police were inside and alongside APCs firing their weaponry on large crowds of protesters. Dozens of witnesses also said they saw snipers fire from helicopters over Rabaa Square. It didnt matter if protesters were throwing rocks or frantically trying to escape the square everyone was a target. Snipers even shot people who were running toward a nearby hospital (which was later seized by security forces who ordered doctors to abandon their patients, many of whom had gunshot wounds and other serious injuries). Some of the protesters were captured, tortured and executed. The onslaught lasted for 12 hours and left more than 800 people dead.

Sisi is one of the top officials responsible for the Rabaa massacre he was Egypts defense minister at the time, and he was intimately involved in the planning of the dispersals that took place in July and August.

But never mind all that: President Trump thinks Sisi is a fantastic guy with whom he has good chemistry. In fact, not only is he a fantastic guy, but hes also done a fantastic job in a very difficult situation. Granted, its easy to see where Trump is coming from being a brutal general-turned-autocrat must be exhausting. There are so many demonstrators to kill and journalists to arrest. There are so many elections to undermine, political rivals to purge and supporters to install in Parliament. And there are so many traditions to uphold: Sisi has proven that hes committed to the longstanding Egyptian practices of arbitrary detention (in notoriously hideous prisons), artificial trials, torture, suppression of free speech, religious persecution and denial of civil liberties. He also treats democracy as more of a nuisance than a source of legitimacy again, he ousted Egypts first democratically elected president at gunpoint (this point really cant be made often enough), suspended the Constitution and received 97 percent of the vote in a sham election held three years ago.

Trump couldnt care less about the corpses in Rabaa or the dissidents trapped in the bowels of the Egyptian prison system. Hes more interested in frolicking across the great vistas of common ground he shares with his new pal: We agree on so many things, he recently said with Sisi sitting next to him at the White House. (One wonders what things he had in mind.) He also dispelled any doubt that we are very much behind President el-Sisi and made sure to dirty up the rest of us with this oily pledge of support: I just want to say to you, Mr. President, that you have a great friend and ally in the United States and in me.

This goes beyond the typical self-interested willingness to shake hands with a despot who puts bullets in protesters heads, imprisons inconvenient activists and strangles any semblance of civil society in his country. While its true that the U.S. often adopts an attitude of moral neutrality (or worse) toward authoritarian regimes, why does Trump think this entails an invite to the White House and such a gross display of adulation? The $1.3 billion we send Egypt every year is bad enough do we really need to broadcast our shame? Its not as if Sisi will suddenly drop his opposition to the Islamic State in the Sinai or his hatred of jihadism if Trump snubs him these arent positions he needs to be cajoled into with flattery and handshakes in the Oval Office.

When pundits recoiled from the fantastic chemistry on display at Sisis White House reception, Glenn Greenwald saw an opportunity to do two of his favorite things: attack U.S. foreign policy and taunt mainstream propagandists like Paul Krugman. When Krugman tweeted a Politico article about Trumps meeting with Sisi, saying, Another morning in Trumps America, Greenwalds venom glands started secreting: Anyone who depicts any of this as something new or aberrational for the U.S. is either ignorant or dishonest. He then detailed the longstanding American support for dictators in Egypt (Hillary Clinton once called Hosni Mubarak and his wife friends of my family) and explained that the Obama administration had resumed arms deliveries to Sisi even as his human rights abuses intensified. According to Greenwald, Krugman was only upset because Trump refuses to prettify American behavior: What Trump is violating is not any Washington principles or ethics but Washington propaganda tactics.

While Greenwald was right about the cruel hypocrisy of our actions in Egypt, his other comments betrayed a simplistic, fragmentary view of U.S. foreign policy.

Does he really think Trumps approach to Egypt is interchangeable with Obamas? Does he think perceptions make no difference in international affairs? Does he think members of eviscerated Egyptian opposition groups dont notice when the president of the United States warmly embraces the man who has been murdering and torturing them? Did other tyrants feel threatened or reassured when they heard Trumps obsequious praise for a fellow strongman? Were international norms of human rights strengthened or diminished when Trumps disgraceful meeting with Sisi was announced? Although the Muslim Brotherhoods popularity varies throughout the Islamic world, how do Muslims feel about Trumps fawning support for a man whos committed to destroying the religious opposition in his country?

By the way, Obamas refusal to meet with Sisi and his imposition of a two-year arms embargo on Egypt should tell you something. Yes, the embargo was lifted before he left office. Yes, he still supported the same repressive regime as Trump. And yes, his administration refused to call Sisis theft of power a coup because that would have made it illegal for the U.S. to continue providing aid. But at least Obama was conflicted about maintaining our relationship with Egypt. Trump is different. He admires the ruthless exercise of illegitimate power. Thats why he applauds Vladimir Putin for his very strong control over his country. Its why he compliments Saddam Hussein for killing terrorists so good (never mind the fact that Iraq was one of the worlds largest state sponsors of terror). Its why he thinks we would be so much better off if Qaddafi were in charge (of Libya) right now. Its why he marveled at Kim Jong-uns amazing, incredible ability to maintain his power: You have to give him credit.

Of course, none of this is surprising. After the Rabaa massacre, Trump wasnt horrified he was impressed with how Sisi took control of Egypt. And he really took control of it. He sure did.

The Anatomy of a Bro-Witch – Patheos (blog)

The other day someone called me a Bro-Witch online and mentioned that there were at least twenty other Bro-Witches out there in the universe. Now I have no idea what exactly at Bro-Witch is and who my Bro-Witching Brothers are, but apparently they are out there. Of course Bro-Witch was meant as an insult, and I took it that way, but after a little thought I decided that the title was absolutely hilarious.

According to the Urban Dictionary a bro is defined as:

An alpha male idiot. This is the derogatory sense of the word (common usage in the western US): white, 16-25 years old, inarticulate, belligerent, talks about nothing but chicks and beer, drives a jacked up truck thats plastered with stickers, has rich dad that owns a dealership or construction business and constantly tells this to chicks at parties, is into extreme sports that might be fun to do but are uncool to claim (wakeboarding, dirt biking, lacrosse), identifies excessively with brand names, spends a female amount of money on clothes and obsesses over his appearance to a degree that is not socially acceptable for a heterosexual male.

Sadly (though I guess I should probably be relieved) I live up to very little of that other than being white. Im way too old to fit the classic definition of a bro, hell I could most certainly be a Bro-Dad if Id ever had kids. I do talk incessantly about my wife, but Im allergic to beer. Now cider and whisky come up a lot in conversation, but only with people who care about such things. I dont feel as if Im all that belligerent, and while Im a pretty harsh critic of my own writing I do think I can share a coherent thought. My wife drives a Pontiac Vibe to work most days, while I tend to walk around everywhere I go or take the train.

I do have a couple of shirts with Gerald Gardner on them, and a few with Crowley too, so I guess I like the brand names! Another definition of bro I found online identified cargo shorts as a part of the bro uniform and Ill admit to being guilty on that end. After I finish writing this article Im going to get my hair done-take that as you will!

Since I was the one identified as a Bro-Witch I had to make my model sort of look like me. Which meant I couldnt give my Bro-Witch a beard or any tattoos but Im sure those exist on a few Bro-Witches in the wild. I think Im mostly making fun of myself in this article, so if you find yourself treading too closely to being a Bro-Witch, dont worry, so am I!

Anatomy of a Bro-Witch

1. Wears Horns on Their Head This is an absolute must because the Bro-Witch desperately wants to be identified as a Witch while out in the wild. The horns say I have a relationship with the Horned God and the Earth, and everyone should love me because of that. Traditional bros often wear hats, but the Bro-Witch turns that around and opts for the horns. Also horns allow the world to see the beautiful hair of the Bro-Witch.

2. A Pentacle or Other Form of Witch Necklace Just in case the horns dont say Witchcraft loudly enough, the obligatory necklace should do the trick. Most Bro-Witches go for the pentagram around their necks, but other versions are acceptable. Both hexagrams (Thelema) and the ten pointed star (found in some versions of the Anderson Feri tradition) say look at me Im a Witch dude! Bro-Witches who want to show their softer side may opt for a goddess symbol around their neck.

3. Skinny Arms The traditional bro often walks around shirtless and probably lifts weights, but not the Bro-Witch. The only heavy lifting Bro-Witches engage in are during cakes and ale, or perhaps when they get out the covens big sword to cast a circle. Underneath our Bro-Witches hoodie theres most likely some sort of tribal tattoo.

4. Designer Witchy Zip-Up Hoodie Brand identity is of utmost importance to the Bro-Witch, so he shows his love of Witchcraft by wearing a Robert Cochrane Traditional Shirtcraft hoodie. No Gucci or Michael Kors for the Witchiest of Bros, instead he wears his Craft allegiances on his sleeve. Other acceptable brands include Gerald Gardner Garb, Esbat Extraordinaire by Valiente, Hotfoot Jackson & Friends, and Sybils Stitches.

Note the Gerald Gardner Garb brand t-shirt on that Bro-Witch.

5. Cargo Shorts Todays Bro-Witch is always on the move, and ready to do ritual at the drop of a Witchs hat, so he carries around a portable collection of altar tools in the pockets of his cargo shorts. A Swiss Army knife makes for a great on the go athame, while his flask of whisky makes the perfect chalice. No candles and matches for the Bro-Witch, the mini-flashlight on his keyring does the job just fine. Loose change is the perfect symbolism for earth while a seashell and a pinecone represent the Lord & Lady.

Dont worry about ritual, hes got his Book of Shadows on a cellphone app all cued up and ready to go. Another app allows him to keep his best Witchcraft books on his phone too, perfect for when he needs to prove his Witchier Than Thouness to an outsider who doesnt get the Bro-Witch code.

Does the Bro-Witch wear underwear? Thats kind of a personal question, but sometimes youve got to get skyclad in a hurry so probably not!

6. Open Toed Sandals The Bro-Witch loves nature and wants to be out in it, but he doesnt want to be too close to it, which is why he wears sandals. The open toe allows him to feel the breeze over his toenails, but the soles of his sandals keep him from having to touch anything itchy or wet with his feet. Blessed be these sandals that have brought thee to the Old Ways! Indeed!

If you ever encounter a Bro-Witch in the wild and outside of a ritual circle, dont worry, most of them are pretty cool and just want to go about their Witchy work!

Anonymous hero disrupts hack with ‘kill switch’ – Sky News

As hospital after hospital went offline, security researchers around the world started poring over the ransomware that had gone round the globe.

And one 22-year-old in the UK ended up saving thousands more computers across the world being infected.

Working together through the night on an IRC channel - an online chatroom themed around a topic, in this case #wannadecryptor - researchers shared their findings.

Despite the spread of the ransomware, researchers weren't impressed.

"It really doesn't seem like a sophisticated attack at all," one hacker told me. "It's embarrassing the NHS got caught out by this."

Other researchers found that the malware was using Tor - anonymity software originally developed by US defence - to communicate with its command and control centre on the deep web (the part of the internet not visible to search engines).

That command and control wasn't active - a sign perhaps "these folks didn't even properly set up their command infrastructure properly before launching", according to another researcher.

And there was another weakness in the malware, found by a 22-year-old security researcher in the UK, who goes by the handle of MalwareTech (MT).

The malware checked a site. MT bought the domain for a few pounds - and ended up slowing the spread of the attack. Without realising it, he had stumbled on a kill switch for the ransomware.

"The kill switch wasn't discovered until about three hours after we'd bought the domain which had already killed all subsequent infections," MT told Sky News.

"From what I can see it killed every infection that contacted our C2 (command and control server)."

:: Hack exposes serious NHS vulnerabilities

The hackers had built in the kill switch, but not registered the site.

If that site was active, a kill switch would activate, stopping the worm's spread. By activating the domain, MT slowed the spread.

Nor was MT impressed by the sophistication of the attack.

"Although the exploit used is very sophisticated (taken from NSA leak), the ransomware itself seems somewhat amateur", he told Sky News.

That raises more questions about NHS systems, which a Sky News investigation found to be underfunded and lacking last year - and also why the UK government didn't do more to make sure they were secure.

While everyone, including the newish National Cybersecurity Centre, part of GCHQ, was "monitoring the situation", a handful of volunteers actually brought the ransomware to a halt.

‘Dr. 90210’ star accepting patients in Orlando – Orlando Sentinel

Miami-based plastic surgeon Dr. Alex de Souza is partnering with Dr. Robert Rey, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and the star of reality TV show Dr. 90210, to start a practice here in Orlando.

The duo is starting small, performing their procedures at the outpatient surgery facility Endo-Surgical Center of Florida on North Dean Road. They hope to eventually establish a boutique practice here called World Plastic Surgery Center.

De Souza and Rey, who are part of a small community of Brazilian plastic surgeons in the United States, said starting a practice in Orlando made sense, because its a major tourist hub with a busy airport, and because compared to Miami and Beverly Hills, its more affordable.

We looked at different places, said Rey in an interview peppered with inspirational advice including Lift your head, Choose to be happy, and The enemy is the fridge.

Orlando is the most-visited city on earth. Its very heterogenous and is a centralized location, he said.

Brazilian tourists make up one of the top five international groups in Orlando, but de Souza said that wasnt the main deciding factor in choosing the area.

Dr. Harinath Sheela, a gastroenterologist and one of the partners at Endo-Surgical Center, said one of the reasons de Souza and Rey chose to work from his surgery center was because its close to the airport with access to state roads 408 and 417. An independent outpatient surgery center, Endo-Surgical was established here six years ago.

Promise Healthcare, a national hospital company, is opening its first Promise Rejuvenation Center at The Villages, providing anti-aging, weight loss and integrative medicine therapy. Dr. Lena Edwards, board certified in integrative medicine, is the clinics chief medical officer.

Fishman and Sheridan EyeCare Specialists are establishing new offices in Clermont and Eustis, set to open in 2018.

Bostwick Laboratories, a specialty anatomic pathology laboratory with locations in Orlando, New York and Virginia, has been acquired by Poplar Healthcare, a Memphis-based laboratory services company.

TrueHealth, a private nonprofit community health center in Central Florida, held its inaugural fundraising gala May 6, raising nearly $80,000 through contributions and ticket sales.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universitys Daytona Beach campus is started an undergraduate program in aerospace physiology in collaboration with Florida Hospital and its campuses in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Abel Biri is the new CEO of Florida Hospital Waterman, replacing David Ottati, who recently became president and CEO of Florida Hospitals Central Florida Division-North Region.

Brea Weiss, a career-development professional, is the new board chair for Florida Hospital for Children.

David Overfield is Orange County health departments new Interim Assistant Health Officer. Hes replacing Lesli Ahonkhai, whos retiring in June.

Jennifer Knight, a pre-operative nurse at Poinciana Medical Center, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for providing exceptional patient care.

Exercise Has Anti-aging Benefits and Makes You Years Younger on a Cellular Level – Newsweek

Updated | Its not quite eternal youth but scientists have discovered how humans can slow down the aging process and shave almost a decade off their biological agevigorous exercise. In a study of more than 5,000 adults in the U.S., a researcher found those who exercise regularly are younger on a cellular level than those who lead sedentary or moderately active lifestyles.

Research published in the journal Preventative Medicine in April considered data on 5,823 people who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2002. The participants were asked demographic and lifestyle questions, including how often they exercised.

They also looked at telomere length. Telomeres are protective caps found at the ends of chromosomes that help keep them stablenot unlike how the plastic sheath at the end of shoelaces stops them from fraying. Every time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter. Eventually they become too small to protect the chromosomes and cells get old and dieresulting in aging.

Shorter telomeres are related to many age-related diseases, including cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

In the study, exercise science professor Larry Tucker from Brigham Young Universitycompared telomere length with levels of physical activity. His findings showed significant differences between those who did regular, vigorous exercise and those who did not.

Just because youre 40, doesnt mean youre 40 years old biologically, he said in a statement. We all know people that seem younger than their actual age. The more physically active we are, the less biological aging takes place in our bodies.

He discovered adults with a high level of physical activity had a biological aging advantage of nine years compared to sedentary adults. When compared with those who did a moderate amount of exercise, the difference for highly active adults was seven years.

A high level of physical activity was constituted as running between 30 and 40 minutes per day, at least five days per week.

Overall, physical activity was significantly and meaningfully associated with telomere length in U.S. men and women, he wrote. Evidently, adults who participate in high levels of physical activity tend to have longer telomeres, accounting for years of reduced cellular aging compared to their more sedentary counterparts.

He said exactly why exercise appears to preserve telomere length is not known, but added it could be linked with inflammation and oxidative stressexercise is known to suppress inflammation and stress over time.

How Can We Tell Whether Comeys Firing Was Justified – Utne Reader Online

We all want our top investigative bodies to be headed by competent officials. We also all want to ensure that these officials can freely investigate other branches of the government including the presidential administration without fear of retribution. How can we tell whether Donald Trumps firing of FBI Director James Comey was meant to ensure competent leadership of the FBI, as Trump claims, or to prevent Comey from digging deeper into Trumps potential connections with Russia, as many Democrats claim.

Our personal political perspectives will strongly influence us to favor one explanation or the other, regardless of the truth. According to behavioral science research, our minds tend to interpret new information in accordance with our past beliefs a thinking error known as theconfirmation bias. Fortunately, we can fight the confirmation bias in such situations by evaluating the opinions of people who both have the most information and have political motivations to support one side, but fail to do so or even support the other side.

In this case, we can observe a number of prominent Republicansexpressing concernsover Comeys firing. Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican who heads the Senates Russia investigation, stated that he was troubled by the timing and reasoning of Comeys firing, which confuses an already difficult investigation for the Committee. So did a number of other influential Republican Senators, such as Bob Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and stated in response to Trump firing Comey that "It is essential that ongoing investigations are fulsome and free of political interference until their completion. Representative Justin Amash, who belongs to the conservative House Freedom Caucus, even stated that he intends to introduce legislation calling for creating an independent commission to investigate Russia's interference in the election. Pat Tiberi, a conservative member of the House, expressedpotential support for a special prosecutor of the Trump and Russia connection and stated that the White House needs to come clean.

Altogether, about 40 Republican members of Congress have expressed concerns over Comeys firing, while virtually every Democrat is calling for an independent commission or special prosecutor to evaluate Comeys firing. While some of these Republicans are known for breaking ranks at times, such as Senator John McCain, many others such as Corker and Burr are mainstream Republicans who generally toe the party line. This data on many of those in the know federal lawmakers who have clear political motivation to align with Trump firing Comey instead broke ranks provides strong evidence that the decision to fire Comey is less about incompetence and more about the Russia investigation than anything else.

Another thinking error playing a role in clouding our judgment isillusory correlation, namely an incorrect illusory perception of a connection between two events. Trumps administration claimed, in a memo by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein thatTrump referencedin his firing of Comey, that Comey lost support due to his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clintons email server. Democrats claimed that Trump fired Comey because of Comeys investigation into the Trump-Russia connection as part of Russias meddling in the US presidential elections.

One of these is an illusory connection, but which is it? Due to confirmation bias, Republicans will be likely to see the Trump-Russia connection as illusory. Democrats will tend to see the Clinton investigation connection as illusory.

Fortunately, we can use another technique from behavioral science to correct for this thinking error consider the alternative. Consider a situation where Trumps true concerns lay with Comeys Clinton email server investigation. When would Trump fire Comey if this was the case? Trump would fire Comey when Trump entered office, asTrump didwith a number of federal attorneys. Instead, Trump specificallymade a decisionto keep Comey in office when he took the presidency, despite knowing about Comeys handling of the email server. Trump specifically indicated, in a message loud and clear for the government investigative bodies, that he would not pursue any further investigation into Clintons email servershortly afterhe was elected. As late as April 12, long after Trump had access to any secret information about Comeys handling of Clintons email server and any other information relevant to Comeys pre-election activities, Trump saidin an interviewwith Fox Business Network I have confidence in [Comey]." Given this evidence, it seems quite unlikely that the real reason for Comeys firing is the Clinton email scandal.

What about the Trump-Russia investigation?According to Fox News, a conservative source, the day before he was fired, Comey met with the Republican and Democrat Senators on the Senate intelligence committee, Senators Richard Burr and Mark Warner. At the meeting, he discussed the inquiry into Russian hacking in the presidential election and potential involvement of Trump and members of his administration in this hacking. Burr and Warner both wanted Comey to speed up the investigation, and Comey responded that he needed more resources to conduct the investigation. Earlier, Comey allegedlymade a requestfor more resources for this investigation from Rosenstein, whose later memo was used by Trump as a reason to fire Comey. Given the evidence of the closeness of the timing of Comeys requests for more resources and Trump firing Comey, the connection between the investigation into Russian hacking and the firing of Comey appears to be true rather than illusory.

Now, this behavioral science-based conclusion does not favor the conservative perspective, and instead favors the liberal one. Will it mean that conservatives dismiss it out of hand? To determine if this is the case, I went on the conservative radio network 700WLW to speak on this topic with the well-known radio show hostScott Sloan two days after Comeys dismissal. Sloan is known as a strong proponent ofChristian and conservativevalues but not someone who practicespost-truth politicsby dismissing the truth in favor of his personal beliefs. We had acivil discussion, during which Sloan acknowledged the validity of this behavioral science-informed perspective and accepted that the evidence pointed against Trumps narrative. It is highly likely that our conversation swayed some of his conservative audience to change their perspective as well.

This interview shows the benefits of using such behavioral science-based approaches to bridge the political divide and have reasonable conversations that result in people going against their current values and changing their minds. What it takes is knowing why our minds are likely to lead us astray and addressing these internal biases using science-informed strategies to do so. In this case, the evidence once corrected for political bias points conclusively, in a way that both reasonable conservative and liberals can agree on, to Trump firing Comey due to concerns over the FBIs investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Genetic alterations that can be modulated by stress have been identified in children at high risk for bipolar disorder, according to a recently published study by researchers at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Results appeared in Translational Psychiatry, a Nature Publishing Group journal.

"We've known that children of patients with bipolar disorder have a higher risk of developing the illness but the biological mechanisms are largely unknown," said Gabriel R. Fries, Ph.D., first author and a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. "By analyzing the blood of children of controls and comparing it to children of bipolar patients, we identified several genes or markers that can explain the increased risk."

Researchers analyzed peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a total of 18 children and adolescents in three matched groups: bipolar patients, unaffected offspring of bipolar parents and children of parents with no history of psychiatric disorders.

The analysis revealed that, compared to children in the control group, bipolar patients and unaffected offspring of bipolar parents had genetic alterations that can influence the response to stress.

"All combine to modulate the response to stress in these children," Fries said. "We know from clinical studies of behavior and the environment that when children are chronically exposed to stressors, they are at a higher risk of developing bipolar disorder. Bipolar parents may struggle because of their disease, leading to higher environmental stress. Their children, because of the genetic markers they have, could be more vulnerable to stress."

The genetic alterations that researchers discovered were validated in blood samples of unrelated adult bipolar patients, Fries said.

New avenues of research could include the effects of reducing environmental stress, as well as whether pharmacological agents might be able to reverse the genetic alternations in vulnerable children before the disorder develops.

Blood samples for the research came from the innovative Pediatric Bipolar Registry at the UTHealth Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders. The research was supported in part by grants from the Pat Rutherford, Jr. Endowed Chair in Psychiatry and the John S. Dunn Foundation.

'Dr. 90210' star accepting patients in Orlando – Orlando Sentinel

Miami-based plastic surgeon Dr. Alex de Souza is partnering with Dr. Robert Rey, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and the star of reality TV show Dr. 90210, to start a practice here in Orlando.

The duo is starting small, performing their procedures at the outpatient surgery facility Endo-Surgical Center of Florida on North Dean Road. They hope to eventually establish a boutique practice here called World Plastic Surgery Center.

De Souza and Rey, who are part of a small community of Brazilian plastic surgeons in the United States, said starting a practice in Orlando made sense, because its a major tourist hub with a busy airport, and because compared to Miami and Beverly Hills, its more affordable.

We looked at different places, said Rey in an interview peppered with inspirational advice including Lift your head, Choose to be happy, and The enemy is the fridge.

Orlando is the most-visited city on earth. Its very heterogenous and is a centralized location, he said.

Brazilian tourists make up one of the top five international groups in Orlando, but de Souza said that wasnt the main deciding factor in choosing the area.

Dr. Harinath Sheela, a gastroenterologist and one of the partners at Endo-Surgical Center, said one of the reasons de Souza and Rey chose to work from his surgery center was because its close to the airport with access to state roads 408 and 417. An independent outpatient surgery center, Endo-Surgical was established here six years ago.

Promise Healthcare, a national hospital company, is opening its first Promise Rejuvenation Center at The Villages, providing anti-aging, weight loss and integrative medicine therapy. Dr. Lena Edwards, board certified in integrative medicine, is the clinics chief medical officer.

Despite their best efforts, no scientist has ever come close to stopping humans from aging. Even anti-aging creams can't stop Old Father Time.

But new research from Brigham Young University reveals you may be able to slow one type of aging -- the kind that happens inside your cells. As long as you're willing to sweat.

"Just because you're 40, doesn't mean you're 40 years old biologically," Tucker said. "We all know people that seem younger than their actual age. The more physically active we are, the less biological aging takes place in our bodies."

The study, published in the medical journal Preventive Medicine, finds that people who have consistently high levels of physical activity have significantly longer telomeres than those who have sedentary lifestyles, as well as those who are moderately active.

Telomeres are the protein endcaps of our chromosomes. They're like our biological clock and they're extremely correlated with age; each time a cell replicates, we lose a tiny bit of the endcaps. Therefore, the older we get, the shorter our telomeres.

Exercise science professor Larry Tucker found adults with high physical activity levels have telomeres with a biological aging advantage of nine years over those who are sedentary, and a seven-year advantage compared to those who are moderately active. To be highly active, women had to engage in 30 minutes of jogging per day (40 minutes for men), five days a week.

"If you want to see a real difference in slowing your biological aging, it appears that a little exercise won't cut it," Tucker said. "You have to work out regularly at high levels."

Tucker analyzed data from 5,823 adults who participated in the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, one of the few indexes that includes telomere length values for study subjects. The index also includes data for 62 activities participants might have engaged in over a 30-day window, which Tucker analyzed to calculate levels of physical activity.

His study found the shortest telomeres came from sedentary people -- they had 140 base pairs of DNA less at the end of their telomeres than highly active folks. Surprisingly, he also found there was no significant difference in telomere length between those with low or moderate physical activity and the sedentary people.

Although the exact mechanism for how exercise preserves telomeres is unknown, Tucker said it may be tied to inflammation and oxidative stress. Previous studies have shown telomere length is closely related to those two factors and it is known that exercise can suppress inflammation and oxidative stress over time.

"We know that regular physical activity helps to reduce mortality and prolong life, and now we know part of that advantage may be due to the preservation of telomeres," Tucker said.

Grad Stories ’17: A Chemical Reaction – St. Ambrose University

Allie Daniels was in fourth-grade when she discovered her passion for chemistry, and now, armed with a St. Ambrose education, she is encouraging other girls to pursue their science dreams.

"Continue to discover new things daily. Look at the world around you and ask why. Look for answers. Once you set goals for yourself, there is nothing that can hold you back," Allie said.

"Women are an integral part of science. Whether it be research, teaching or being a doctor or astronaut, the possibilities are endless," she added, and based on experience, she knows.

On May 13, Allie will graduate cum laude with a St. Ambrose Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, with minors in biology, forensic science and justice. This fall she will join a prestigious five-year program at the University of Tennessee in pursuit of a doctoral degree in Analytical Chemistry.

It wasn't until Allie was in fourth grade that she learned about chemistry. "I vividly remember experiments like the classic erupting volcano and counting the number of water drops I could get to stay on a penny before the surface tension caused the water to run off the penny," she said.

"Experiments like these had me in awe. I began to do my own experiments at home."

Her interest and passion grew when she attended the SAU Chemistry for Kids summer camp in 2005.

"I spent those four days in Lewis Hall learning all about what chemistry really is," Allie recalled. "I remember making batteries out of a banana, doing paper chromatography to figure out who wrote a secret message, doing tests to discover what the identity of a powder was, and, on the last day, using all the skills I had learned to solve a real mystery. From that week on, I was in love with chemistry."

When Allie looks back on the camp, she speaks of the significance of one professor and how he made her decision to attend SAU an easy one.

"I remember Dr. (Andrew) Axup was wearing his signature rainbow lab coat as he showed us what a chemical reaction' consisted of on that first day: bubbles, heat and fizzing. I was thoroughly amazed. Little did I know, the same professor who had introduced me to real life chemistry that week would be the first professor I ever had in college."

She feels blessed to have attended St. Ambrose.

"Professors in the chemistry department have done all in their power to make sure I am successful in graduate school. Whether it was answering my countless questions and helping me think through problems, or staying until 7 p.m. so I could be in the lab, my professors have always gone above and beyond to make my experience at Ambrose the best it could be," she said.

Allie knows a large part of the next five years will revolve around research, something some find daunting.

Not Allie.

"The chemistry program at SAU has continuously challenged me to think critically and solve problems. I have had the opportunity to do research through the Introduction to Chemical Research class, the Undergraduate Summer Research Institute at SAU, and my senior research project through the chemistry and honors programs. Research is at the heart of chemistry, and my time at Ambrose has made me love lab work," Allie said.

"I was also able to be a tutor and a Supplemental Instruction leader at Ambrose, which really prepared me to teach and gave me a love for teaching chemistry."

In addition, Allie was a member of the Honors Program, Mock Trial, Bridge Bible Fellowship, Campus Ministry, Phi Eta Sigma, Dance Marathon, as well as various intramural sports. Before graduation, she served as secretary for the Chemistry Club and the College Republicans.

Her endless passion for chemistry is evident in her words.

"I've learned that with research, things don't always go as planned. The most challenging aspect for me was staying positive when I often became frustrated with results I was, or wasn't, getting," she said.

"But to me, there is nothing more rewarding than working extremely hard at solving a problem that has been holding you back and rising above that. It's like Edison and the light bulb. You can fail thousands of times, but it only takes that one success to take you to heights you didn't think you could reach."

Professor Neil Garg publishes kid-friendly organic chemistry book – Daily Bruin

Midway through his newly published book, Neil Garg poses a serious scientific question to his reader.

Whats a chemical in coffee that adults like so much?

The question is scrawled in chunky cartoon letters inside the childrens coloring book he created. An answer awaits on the opposite page: caffeine, a stimulant, its molecular structure rendered in black and white.

Garg, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, said he was inspired to write and self-publish The Organic Coloring Book with the help of his two young daughters. Garg released the kid-friendly book April 22, hoping it would inspire children to love organic chemistry as much as he does.

When his younger daughter Kaylie was 4 years old, she began questioning her parents incessantly about the chemicals served in her food, Garg said.

Kaylie had a fear of chemicals, said Garg, who is also a faculty-in-residence at De Neve Gardenia and Holly. She was really skeptical.

So, Garg and his wife began teaching Kaylie that everything around her was filled with chemicals. These important substances, such as cyanidins and beta-carotene, made her blueberries blue and her carrots orange, Garg would tell his daughter. Eventually, he said, chemical naming became a game around his house. Kaylies older sister, Elaina, also joined in on the fun.

The game of chemistry soon reacted with his teaching career to produce the coloring book idea.

The word organic has a lot of definitions these days, Garg said. For example, organic can mean minimal use of pesticides. (But) to an organic chemist, the definition is very different: molecules made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms.

Kaylie and Elaina helped Garg select the molecules for the book. Then he asked a graphic artist to create a little character that would follow the reader on every page of the learning journey: Cheesy, a cartoon mouse.

Emma Baker-Tripp and Joyann Barber, graduate students in Gargs research lab, pitched in by constructing and optimizing the chemical structures used for the book. They made sure every molecules atoms and bonds were visible using the computer programs Spartan and CYLview, said Baker-Tripp, a graduate student in chemistry.

When the book was finally ready to publish, Garg gave away more than 100 free copies to the UCLA Krieger Center and Warren Avenue Elementary School. The children in his daughters fourth-grade class helped distribute some of these copies to their kindergartener friends, he added.

This past weekend, the family gave away more copies at a school event called the Warner Science Slam.

Everybodys been super positive about it, Garg said. Kids love to color; theyll color anything.

Earlier this week, Garg accepted the Royal Society of Chemistry Higher Education Teaching Award for his accomplishments in popularizing organic chemistry and innovating chemical education, according to the societys website. Garg has received multiple awards throughout his teaching career, including recognition for his program Biology and Chemistry Online Notes, an online organic chemistry learning system now used in curricula across multiple states.

Garg said he now hopes local museums or the UCLA Store hear about his coloring book and will be open to distributing it. Some of his students are interested in penning a second volume, he added.

I think theres been a need in general to have research programs give back to the community, Garg said.
