Scott Brown: A Massachusetts Miracle that will Restore our Liberties

From the Editor:

This is an inspiring libertarian/Tea Party video for Scott Brown for US Senate.

"A vote for Scott Brown is a vote for Liberty... A vote for Martha Coakley is a vote for the the Obama agenda..."

I just sent in my $25.00 contribution to Brown for Senate. I know some of you all here at LR have done the same. If you haven't already done so, please do the same below. (And make sure to put in "Libertarian Republican" in the referrel box.)

A final note: Don't be surprised if this blog is taken over by Scott Brown for Senate Mania in the next couple days. We plan to cover every aspect of the Mass. race, with a special libertarian emphasis. We'll try to cover other issues rather than Brown for Senate, as well. But frankly, for Libertarian Republicans right now, does anything else really matter?

I just made a contribution to Scott Brown for U.S. Senate and I'm hoping you will do the same. You can donate by going to https://www.icontribute.us/scottbrown. Thank you for your support!

Lots of Countries Are Getting Faster Internet But We’re Not One of ‘Em [Bandwidth]

Akamai released their quarterly State of the Internet report this week, along with this chart showing the fastest national networks in the world. From 2008 to 2009, on average, the world's internet got 13% faster. America's got 2.4% slower.

There are tons of interesting tidbits to be found in Akamai's State of the Internet report for Q3 2009. This particular chart shows the 10 countries with the fastest internet in the world. It also shows that they're not slowing down.

South Korea, already pumping at 14.6 Mbps, managed to improve 16% over last year. Ireland improved most dramatically of the top ten, improving their infrastructure to increase year over year speeds 73%.

But America, who has the 18th fastest internet in the world, slowed down ever so slightly to 3.9 Mbps in 2009. Though our nation as a whole didn't get any faster, some individual areas showed significant improvement, including a 20% bump in Massachusettes and a 17% jump in D.C. and Utah.

If America's megabit mediocrity depresses you, just be thankful you don't live on the Island of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean: it was the slowest of the 203 nations tested. [cnet]

Biometric Bouquet Changes Color For Cold Feet [Biometrics]

The electrode-equipped Galvanic Skin Response Bouquet doesn't give the couple much choice about wearing their hearts on their sleeves: a blue LED glows when they're calm but a white one turns on when they becomes nervous. But that's not all.

The bride and the groom—who met, appropriately, working on a corset that tightens with heart rate— implemented a variety of biofeedback gear to datalog their big day.

The bouquet is attached to two electrodes, one worn on the Bride's wedding finger, natch, via velcro strap, and the other in a wristband strapped to the groom. The information on their nerves, as well as their heartbeats, is recorded throughout the wedding on a 1GB SD card in the base of the bouquet.

The bride and groom are also equipped with devices to track them via infrared, so they can later check how often they were by one another side throughout the day. I think a photo album will do just fine for me. [GeekPhysical Biometrics via Make]

This is a single object, but it is not one of a kind.

There has been a great deal written about this object, in works of both fact and fiction.

It is visible to the naked eye.

This object had a violent beginning.

It was well-known to prehistoric man.

The more we know about this object, the more mysterious and interesting it becomes.

You know a lot about this object; you’ve been learning about it your whole life.

Times Square’s Newest Video Billboard Stars FBI’s Most Wanted [Billboards]

Criminals have made it on Broadway thanks to the FBI's newest video billboard, one which displays their stories-tall mugs alongside Diddy, oversized M&Ms, and other Times Square staples.

The billboard, which was unveiled yesterday, is part of an agreement with Clear Channel that gives the FBI access to over 400 digital billboards in 33 cities across the country. The Times Square sign rotates through FBI's Most Wanted criminals that are thought to be in the area but can also be updated with missing persons reports and emergency warnings.

New York City's abundance of faces has long provided a kind of shelter for criminals seeking anonymity among the masses. This gigantic digital wanted poster might make them rethink that approach. [The Washington Post]

Kasich chooses a running mate for Ohio Gov’s race

State Auditor Mary Taylor: "Get the government out of the way"

From Eric Dondero:

Former Congressman, and Republican nominee for Governor of Ohio John Kasich twittered the following announcement on Thursday:

Please join me in welcoming Mary Taylor as OH's next LG. We are committed to working to bring jobs and prosperity back to our state.
10:36 AM Jan 14th from web

She is currently State Auditor, and like Kasich is known for staunch fiscal conservatism, and dedication to budget retstraints. She refers to herself as Ohio's "Government Watchdog."

During the announcement press conference (YouTube video) Taylor said:

"Ohioans are correct to ask, does government spend my tax dollars responsibly... despite my repeated warnings about a looming multi-billion dollar budget hole, and the dangers of over-relying on one-time state and federal stimulus money, I've been ignored. I've tried to help. I've offered solutions. But our Governor is a hard guy to help.

John Kasich and I believe, that government should only do that with which they are unable to do for themselves. We know that if government gets out of our way, businesses will create jobs here in Ohio and we will prosper."

Kasich still backs abolishing state income tax, open to legalized gambling

Of particular interest to libertarians, candidate Kasich went on record on two other fronts in a recent interview with the Columbus Dispatch. Kevin Holtsberry of Ohio Politics On-line reports:

In a move that will probably cheer the libertarians, and others who back gambling expansion, it seems Kasich is open to that idea as well:

Kasich said he was not backing away from his plan to phase out the state income tax...

Kasich said that, as governor, he would examine an expansion of legalized gambling from the viewpoint of whether it makes sense for the state.

“I’m not ideologically opposed to gambling,” the former Westerville congressman said. “I haven’t made up my mind on it, but I’m not going to say we’re not going to do it and pound my fist on the table. We’ll have to see, and that doesn’t mean we are going to do it. We’ll have to take a really hard look at it.”

Getting Away From It All in the Dry Tortugas

Posted by David McRee at BlogTheBeach.com
In the middle of a cold, gray winter it’s nice to remember that summer is not that far away. Here are a few photos from my trip to the Dry Tortugas near the Florida Keys last spring. The air was hot, but the water was still cool enough to be [...]

Windows Mobile 7 Coming To LG Phones In September? [WindowsMobile7]

French blogger Eric from PresseCitron, currently meeting with LG at their Design Labs, tweeted that Windows Mobile 7 will be coming to LG handsets in September. The Tweets were taken down pretty quickly, but WMPoweruser captured them even quicker.

Eric also tweeted that LG will be coming out with an Android 2.1 handset in April.

Windows Mobile 7 will (hopefully) be showing its face at Mobile World Congress in Febraury. With rumors flying earlier this week that Windows Mobile 7 wouldn't roll out until 2011, Eric's Tweets make us optimistic that we'll see WinMo7 on handsets by the end of the calendar year. strength of an electromagnet

They say that the strength of the magnetic field possible from an iron core electromagnet is limited to 1.6-2 T, is this limitation holds for an electromagnet with any number of turns ??? (is number of turns is a factor) and another question is, which core practically seems to be best???

How Could This Do It Yourself Light Suit Not Improve Your Weekend? [DIY]

This may not necessarily be the most practical DIY, but if you're looking at that picture—I mean really looking—and you're not thinking "I want to go to there," well, I just don't know what to tell you.

Like Daft Punk before you, now you too can dazzle people with a line-y, glow in the dark suit (and freak them out by remaining totally mute the entire night wearing it). Making one of these takes some preparation—you'll need to order the glow wire online and secure the parts for a battery pack to keep it running—but the Instructable gives detailed instructions for every step.

So if you're heading to a dance party this weekend, or performing a futuristic heist, or meeting your significant other's parents for the first time, this DIY project is definitely worth a look. [Instructables]

Massachusetts race could be decided by other issues – like the Red Sox vs. Yankees

by Eric Dondero

Well, this could go down as the very biggest of the soon-to-be famous Martha Coakley gaffes.

On Boston radio WBZ yesterday, Martha Coakley accused Red Sox great Curt Schilling of being a "Yankees fan."

From the NY Times blog, Saturday:

It was Ms. Coakley who brought up baseball in the interview on WBZ News Radio. She noted that her rival, Scott Brown, a Republican State Senator, had been campaigning in Boston Friday with Rudolph W. Giuliani, and she reminded listeners that Mr. Giuliani is a Yankee fan.

The interviewer, Dan Rea, said, “Yeah, but now Scott Brown has Curt Schilling, OK?’’

To which Ms. Coakley replied, “And another Yankee fan.’’

“Schilling?’’ Mr. Rea pressed.

“Yes,’’ she said.

“Curt Schilling a Yankee fan?’’ he persisted.

“No, all right, I’m wrong on my, I’m wrong,’’ she said.

Here's the video of the recorded radio show.

Times reporter Michael Cooper goes on to note that the Red Sox pitcher "was accorded near-heroic status here for guiding the team to victory over their arch-rivals, the Yankees, in a key game in 2004 while his own sock was literally bloody from an ankle injury."

Curt Schilling responded early this morning on a post at his blog 38 Pitches:

But never, and I mean never, could anyone ever make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan. Well, check that, if you didn’t know what the hell is going on in your own state maybe you could….

Coming on the heels of the Fenway Park diss, where Coakley sardonically commented that Scott Brown was wasting his time shaking hands "out in the cold," in front of the world-famous Baseball park, this cannot be at all helpful to Coakley's campaign, not too mention 3 days before the election.

UPDATE!

Latest internal polls being leaked from both the Coakley and Brown campaigns, according to NRO, have a range of complete tie to Brown up by 11 points.
