Chicano Comedy Aguruphobia Screens at the Frida This Saturday

Price of admission guarantees you access to see the film and Q&A, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you're helping the filmmakers complete their financial goals towards paying the actors in the film and distribution costs. And if that still doesn't convince you, consider that sponsor Jarritos will be giving away free bottles of soda to guests. So buy a ticket and GO GO GO!

A-Guruphobia surrounds young wannabe mystic Crystal Luna (Jade Puga), who has an obsession with internet celebrity mystic Guru Nanak (played by Pepe Serna, in a role he describes as a mix between Walter Mercado and Deepak Chopra).

While Crystal struggles with her own spiritual practice, she also struggles to cope with an extreme case of agoraphobia, which prevents her from leaving the house. And when she learns she's on the verge of losing her home to foreclosure, she develops her own winning technique to enlightenment called the wave vibrator, which wins the acclaim of her customers for its effectiveness.

A chance meeting with Nanak gets her closer to her idol, until she realizes he's after her spiritual method--leaving her in fear for her life from the man she once admired. Can Crystal save her home, thwart Nanak's attempts to take her wave vibrator (or her life)? Will Pepe Serna's black bob wig withstand the drama that will ensue? Find out Saturday night, and discuss the movies with the actors... but for now, peep the trailer below to check out snippets of the film. See you there!

Motti Casa opens in Studio City, showcases global goods

Nora Natali wanted her new Studio City showroom to be eclectic, just like her favorite Paris boutiques, Merci Paris and Colette: casual but elegant with a French twist, she says.

Walk into the sunny space on Ventura Boulevard and Natalis love of international products becomes apparent: Bright blue tablecloths from Africa share display space with handcrafted resin serving boards by San Francisco artist Tina Frey. Rattan mirrors are hung salon-style next to a collection of Egyptian cotton throws. French fare -- teacups and tea towels -- blend seamlessly with modern furnishings by Danish design brand Menu.

While jazz plays softly on a turntable in the background, Natali shares some of her favorite items: The Minister side table by Karabachian Design Office ($320), I Profumi di Firenze perfumes, soy blend candles from Maison Louis Marie and Rosemunde tank tops. I want to mix it up, Natali says. I want everyone to come in here and not feel intimidated by beautiful things.

Motti Casa, 12222 Ventura Blvd., Studio City. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. (818) 761-7282.

Giant leap for China space program

By Katie Hunt, CNN

updated 10:42 PM EDT, Thu October 23, 2014

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Up, up and away. Way away -- to the moon, in fact.

China launched an experimental spacecraft early Friday that is scheduled to orbit the moon before returning to Earth, a first for the country's ambitious space program and considered a precursor to a planned mission to the moon.

The unmanned spacecraft was launched by a Long March 3C rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan, western China, state media said.

It is China's first lunar module capable of returning to Earth and the mission's main technical challenge will be making sure the spacecraft slows down enough to re-enter Earth's atmosphere safely.

Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser heads to space for science

The Dream Chaser, designed and built by Louisville-based Sierra Nevada Corporation's Space Systems, is aiming to be the next NASA vehicle to take humans to space. The program announced Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, that it had acquired a launch vehicle with United Launch Alliance and was going to send its first mission in Nov. 2016. (The Denver Post | Sierra Nevada Corporation)

Sierra Nevada's Louisville-based Space Systems has a new mission: Doing science in space.

The Dream Chaser for Science, or DC4Science, is a variant of the Dream Chaser spacecraft designed as an orbiting microgravity laboratory.

"We can create a custom lab that allows us to dedicate the lab space to whatever the scientific purpose is," Space Systems vice president, Mark Sirangelo said.

The spacecraft allows for customized experimental payloads to be sent to space for three different types of missions: Short-term flights with scientist astronauts on board; uncrewed months-long missions; and longer duration missions of a year or more.

The vacuum of space is considered a purer environment in which to conduct science. Experiments currently aboard the International Space Station include research into aging, cancer cells, experimental medications and more, the findings from which can have direct applications back on Earth.

In addition to the customizable aspect, there is one major difference between experiments on board DC4Science and those being performed on the space station.

"Customers will maintain scientific intellectual property rights, free from Federal Research Laboratory regulations that govern the International Space Station," said John Roth, Space Systems' vice president of business development.

Sirangelo said CD4Science is a direct tie-in with Space Systems' Global Project space-flight program, announced in September. The program is designed to assist countries that lack the resources to build their own space program by offering them the option of buying seats aboard a Dream Chaser flight or purchasing their own spacecraft. Interview: Toby Jeg Reflects On Ten Years Of Red Scare Industries

"If you want to make this interview really short, you can just tell people that owning a label is all about schlepping boxes to the post office," Red Scare Industries founder Toby Jeg jokes over the phone to Chicagoist, days before he heads overseas as tour manager for recently reinvigorated Chicago punks The Lawrence Arms.

You wouldn't know it from his persistent sarcasm and hilarious wisecracks but Jeg is at the helm of one of Chicago's best loved punk rock record labels. Red Scare ushered in its tenth anniversary this year with a 17-song artist compilation (which included the first new song from Alkaline Trio/The Lawrence Arms supergroup The Falcon in eight years).

The celebration continues this weekend with a stacked show Saturday at the Metro featuring Red Scare bands old and new like Teenage Bottlerocket, Masked Intruder, The Methadones, The Lillingtons, The Falcon and more. Acoustic sets from Nothington and Brendan Kelly at the Gingerman Tavern bookend the weekend. You can find tickets and a full schedule of the festivities, here.

CHICAGOIST: It's actually hard to believe Red Scare is only ten years old. It feels like it's been around for much longer just because of its imprint in the punk scene.

TOBY JEG: That's interesting because most people feel it's the opposite. Like, "Holy shit, it's been ten years?!" From my perspective, somebody who schleps a lot of boxes and has to deal with un-rock and roll things like production deadlines, it also feels like longer than ten years. [laughs] I'm right there with you.

C: Well, I meant it in a good way.

TOBY JEG: No, I get you. It's such a legacy. I'm with you there.

C: Remind me how long you've been based in Chicago because you started Red Scare on the West Coast, right?

TOBY JEG: Yeah, I started the label when I was still working at Fat Wreck Chords in San Francisco. I moved here in early 2007. And Chicago has been so awesome. People show up to shows, the bands are great and everyone is supportive. People always ask, why move from San Francisco to Chicago? And if you made that move, you would know. It's just a wonderful, vibrant music community.

C: It seemed like there was a bit of a lull in the Chicago punk scene and now it seems like I'm hearing about way more local bands and shows than I did five years ago.

Red Bull ahead of the US Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo: "Hand on heart, this is probably the date on the calendar I look forward to the most. Ive loved every minute of being in Austin: when they picked this place for the US Grand Prix, they absolutely nailed it.

The city is awesome. I love listening to live music and this is a great place for that, plus Texas feels like real America, and thats something Ive really enjoyed just sinking into the last two seasons. And then, theres the important bit.

The Circuit of the Americas, in my opinion, is the best of the new breed of circuits. The nature of the corners is interesting. Its also a very busy track where you dont get much respite. The first sector is very special and that first turn, blind up the big hill is like nothing else in F1. Its also a good example of the excitement a late-apex can create: you can have a really good lunge there. Theyve done a very good job.

Sebastian Vettel: "Austin is a fun city where you get a real feel for the Texan lifestyle and traditions and get to race on a great track. The Circuit of the Americas is a track I like a lot; it has 20 corners and we drive it anti-clockwise. The start/finish straight has a steep incline up to the first corner and is the trademark of the track. For us that means the braking starts uphill, which is not easy and locking the front tyres could be a problem.

A lot of the corner combinations remind me of other famous circuits on the race calendar. For example the fast combination during the first part of the track feels like Silverstone and Suzuka. The famous Maggotts and Becketts passages were used as a model for this part of the track and the drivers enjoy the extremely fast turns, when the car is balanced right.

Also corners 12 and 15, this section was taken from the Motodrom in Hockenheim. It is a slower part of the track, and is designed to create more of a stadium atmosphere. The long bend also reminds of the famous turn 8 in Istanbul."

Youre from Michigan, which is just a bit to the north of Texas, so for a Yankee, whats the best thing to come out of Texas? I think its the Can do attitude of the people and the Dont mess with Texas spirit, which makes this city so special.

Austin dining delicacies: Tex Mex or BBQ? Definitely Tex Mex. Thats Mexican with a certain twist. I love Mexican food and in the UK, good Mexican food is not that easy to find. In Austin you can get the best Burritos.

Texas football: Dallas Cowboys (NFL) or Dallas FC (MLS)? (Or do the Detroit Lions top them all)? Its got to be the Dallas Cowboys. They are a great American Football team and have won multiple Superbowls. American Football definitely beats Soccer. Ive lived in the UK for 14 years now and I still prefer American Football. Where I grew up, Soccer was a girls sport.

Austins famous for its music culture - have you sampled it and whats your favourite place to see live music in the city? I have only been down there for races, so I didnt have a lot of free time. But the only place I saw was the Piano Bar on 6th Street. Really fun, interactive and good spirit.

Ebola vaccine trials to be tested as early as December

Ebola vaccine trials could begin in West-Africa in December, public health authorities said Friday, and could know by April whether the vaccine is effective or not.

According to Marie-Paule Keiny of the World Health Organization, the trials in December would be a month earlier than originally planned. At least five other vaccines could enter human testing in the first few months of 2015.

Participants in the trial would include health care workers in high risk areas. While a trial in Liberia would include others at high risk like burial workers or family members caring for Ebola patients.

Ocean debris discovered on Kaua'i reveal possibility of mammoth tsunami risk

Massive marine debrisdiscovered in a sinkhole on the island of Kaua'i reveal there has been at least one mammoth tsunami that struck the islands about 500 years ago, and that another could happen again.

According to scientists led by Rhett Butler, director of the Hawai'i institute of geophysics and planetology(HIGP) at UH Mnoa, a wall of water up to nine meters (30 feet) high surged onto Hawaiian shores almost half a century ago. The massive tsunami was caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Aleutian Islands.

The new study examined deposits believed to have come from the extreme event and used models to show how it might have occurred.

An earthquake in the eastern Aleutian Trench big enough to generate a massive tsunami such as the one in the study is expected to occur once every thousand years.
