On Thursday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge will hear a novel First Amendment battle over the extent to which an in vitro father can mention his child's name.

STORY:CNN Gets First Amendment Victory in Video Captioning Dispute

At the center of the dispute is actor Jason Patric, who has been locked in a custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Danielle Schreiber over their four-year-old son Gus, who was born through artificial insemination. Thanks to California law, which grants the mother full custody unless there is a written agreement establishing parental rights before conception, a judge has denied The Lost Boys star access to his son.

As the custody issue goes to an appellate court next month, Patric has launched an organization called Stand Up for Gus to raise awareness of parental alienation. At a fundraising event last autumn, Matt Damon, Kiefer Sutherland and Jon Hamm were among the celebrities on hand. Patric has also built awareness for the project with interviews on shows like 20/20 and The View. The actor has also established Twitter and Facebook pages that mention and picture Gus.

According to Patty Glaser, one of the Glaser Weil attorneys representing Schreiber, this amounts to a "public relations tirade" from a father who she says didn't want his name on the birth certificate so as to avoid attention from the paparazzi.

Schreiber is now demanding a restraining order. "We are asking him not to use the childs name and likeness for commercial purposes without moms permission," Glaser tells The Hollywood Reporter.

In the past, celebrities like Liam Neeson and Sandra Bullock have been the ones leaning on likeness rights laws to stop the unauthorized use of their fame. Other celebrities have asserted privacy laws to keep the media from intruding upon their space. In this case, it's the other way around, as the celebrity is the one raising a First Amendment defense.

NEW YORK New York's costumed pub crawl known as SantaCon is under way after a prominent civil rights lawyer gave attendees lesson in the First Amendment.

Lawyer Norman Siegel said Saturday the government cannot ban SantaCon. But he said the government can reasonably regulate the event.

SantaCon organizers retained Siegel last week as part of an effort to tame the excesses of the daylong party. Attendees started spreading out among midtown bars shortly after he spoke.

New Yorkers have complained in past years about drunken Santas vomiting in the streets. But organizers say last year's SantaCon raised $60,000 for charity, mostly through partnerships with participating bars.

This year's festivities fall on the same day as a planned protest over killings by police.

SantaCon organizers have expressed respect for the demonstration.

(December 13, 2014) "" Led by former Comets Head Coach and player Kim Roentved, the Wichita B-52s kept Missouri scoreless in the first quarter, however the home side had a spectacular third quarter and won their eighth consecutive match in the 2014/15 MASL season with a 12-3 victory at the Independence Events Center.

Colombian midfielder John Sosa was elected the Borden Man of the Match with two goals and three assists while league leader Leo Gibson notched one goal and had five assists and now stands with 37 points in first place. A total of nine players scored for the Comets.

After getting a solid 13-3 victory against Wichita last November 22, the B-52s entered the match with two straight victories and surprised the Comets in the first half showing great improvement from their last visit to Kansas City but Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team scored 12 goals in the second half.

After a scoreless first quarter, the home team was able to find the back of the net twice in the second stanza when Coady Andrews pushed the ball from the goal line after a rebound before Sosa tallied his first one of the night to end the first half 2-0.

The third quarter saw the most action during the match with seven goals scored between both teams. A brace from team captain Vahid Assadpour and a tally from Max Touloute gave the Comets a 5-0 lead before Roentved's team notched their first one of the evening scored by former Comets player Johnny Markey to make it 5-1.

Gibson, Alain Matingou and Robert Palmer would each score one goal to end the quarter 8-1.

Wichita fought hard in the last fifteen minutes and beat Danny Waltman twice, however Bryan Perez, Sosa, Touloute and Brian Harris scored one more time to end the match with a final score of 12-3.

Next up, the Comets will try to remain undefeated when they host the San Diego Sockers on Saturday, December 27 for the first time in history at the Independence Events Center.

Novartis psoriasis drug tops Johnson & Johnson's Stelara in late-stage: Study

Reuters Dec 12, 2014, 02.22PM IST

(Novartis said its experimental)

ZURICH: Novartis said on Friday its experimental psoriasis drug Cosentyx was better at clearing the rough skin patches associated with the disease than Johnson & Johnson's Stelara.

Results of the late-stage Phase IIIb study involving 679 patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis found those taking Cosentyx achieved clear or almost clear skin after 16 weeks of treatment.

On a secondary measure, patients achieved at least a 75 per cent improvement in disease severity at week four.

Plaque psoriasis is a painful and unsightly skin condition which is known to cause itching and scaling and affects approximately 125 million people.

The data follows results last year showing Cosentyx, also known as secukinumab, was superior to Amgen's Embrel in a head-to-head study.

Cosentyx is expected to be the first in a clutch of new treatments for plaque psoriasis which target the inflammation-causing protein interleukin-17 (IL-17) to gain market approval.

European regulators gave the green light to the drug last month, while an advisory panel to the US Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended the use of the drug.

Other drugmakers working on new treatments include Eli Lilly , AstraZeneca and Amgen.
