Not yet been terrified by the Year 2038 problem? Somehow you must have missed reports claiming it poses a threat, as exposed by Gangnam style (yes, you read that correctly), to our computerised future.

In fact, it is claimed, Y2038 is so bad it could be worse than Y2k. Well thats absolutely true. Just like Y2K, if left unchecked, Y2038 could cause major issues for any computer systems. But just like Y2k, any prediction of planes falling out of the sky and the banking system melting down are likely to be a long long way from coming true.

So should you worry? No. But heres what you need to know

The year 2038 problem is caused by 32-bit processors and the limitations of the 32-bit systems they power. The processor is the central component that drives all computers and computing devices. It crunches the numbers and performs calculations that allow programs to run.

Essentially, when the year 2038 strikes 03:14:07 UTC on 19 March, computers still using 32-bit systems to store and process the date and time wont be able to cope with the date and time change. Like the Y2K bug, the computers wont be able to tell the difference between the year 2038 and 1970 the year after which all current computer systems measure time.

Processors come in many difference sizes and capabilities designed for different applications, but most of them operate and crunch numbers in a similar manner.

The first desktop computer processors were 16-bit and ran 16-bit software, which meant they could store and access values up to 216 or 65,536 distinct values within 64KB of memory. Other notable 16-bit systems include the 1990s gaming consoles the Super Nintendo and Sega MegaDrive, which took over from 1980s 8-bit systems.

Later, 32-bit processors were developed that ran 32-bit software and increased the number of values a system could handle 232 different values or 4,294,967,295 different numbers within 4GB of memory. The systems stored dates and times in 32-bit chucks. In reality that large number of different values is halved for time keeping and other data storage applications as they range from -2,147,483,648 through 2,147,483,647 leaving only 2,147,483,647 positive values from zero.

Modern processors that power almost every computer bought today, and are starting to make their way into smartphones and tablets too, are based on a 64-bit system and 64-bit software. They also have a maximum number of different values they can address but at 264 or 18 quintillion values within 16 Exabytes of memory, the ceiling is considerably higher at a date that is over twenty times greater than the estimated age of the universe or 292bn years from now.

Abstract:

Cellular therapies represent a new frontier in the treatment of neurological disease. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which can be harvested from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord blood, among many other sources, possess several qualities which may be used to treat diseases of the central nervous system. MSCs migrate to sites of malignancy, a property which may be used for the treatment of brain cancer. MSCs possess immunosuppressive properties, which may be used for the treatment of neurological disorders with an inflammatory etiology. Finally, MSCs restore injured neural tissue, a property which may be used for the treatment of neural injury. Approximately 23 clinical trials have been completed to date, with many more ongoing, and all have been listed in this review. The long-term safety of MSC-based therapies is not well established, and continues to be one major limitation to clinical translation. More broadly, only a small minority of clinical trials have employed rigorous designs that include prospective randomization, patients from multiple centers, clinically-relevant and reproducible endpoints, and adequate long-term follow-up. These limitations must be addressed before MSCs can enter widespread clinical use. Nevertheless, MSCs represent a promising new approach to treating diseases of the central nervous system that are traditionally associated with morbid outcomes. With additional pre-clinical and clinical studies that focus on their potential benefits as well as dangers, MSCs may one day find translation to clinical use in the setting of neurological disease.

Recent studies have revealed that adult stem cells such as bone marrow-derived cells contribute to lung tissue regeneration and protection, and thus administration of exogenous stem/progenitor cells may be a potent next-generation therapy for COPD. Pathogenesis of COPD is characterized by an upregulation of inflammatory processes leading to irreversible events such as apoptosis of epithelial cells, proteolysis of the terminal air-space and lung extracellular matrix components. The available pharmacological treatments are essentially symptomatic, therefore, there is a need to develop more effective therapeutic strategies. It has been previously demonstrated that transplanted MSC home to the lung in response to lung injury and adopt phenotypes of alveolar epithelial cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts and bronchial epithelial cells. However, engraftment and differentiation are now felt to be rare occurrences and other mechanisms might be involved and play a more important role. Importantly, MSCs protect lung tissue through suppression of proinflammatory cytokines, and through triggering production of reparative growth factors. Accordingly, it is not clear if and how these cells will be able to repair, to slow or to prevent the disease. This article reviews recent advances in regenerative medicine in COPD and highlights that their potential application although promising and very attractive, are still a far away opinion.

Culture makes a significant difference in how people experience spirituality, according to new Stanford research.

Christians might "kindle" or generate different kinds of spiritual experiences than Buddhists because their cultural understandings of these mental or bodily sensations are different, said Tanya Luhrmann, a Stanford anthropology professor and co-author of a new article in Current Anthropology.

"We suggest that phenomenological experience is always the result of the interaction between expectation, cultural invitation, spiritual practice and bodily responsiveness," she wrote.

Phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. As Luhrmann noted, comparing spiritual or phenomenological experiences across different social settings "shows us how deeply cultural expectations shape intimate human experience."

Bodily or mental sensations have different meanings in different spiritual traditions, Luhrmann said. One person may feel a damp coldness and believe that a demon is present. Another person may shake uncontrollably and attribute this to the Holy Spirit. A third feels a light, floating sensation this is what happens when he meditates.

Luhrmann's research examined how the presence of a specific cultural name for a mental or bodily sensation may affect that sensation within a specific cultural and social setting. Her co-author was Julia Cassaniti, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago.

"We call this the 'cultural kindling' of the spiritual experience," said Luhrmann, the Watkins University Professor in the Stanford Department of Anthropology.

In an interview, Luhrmann elaborated on cultural kindling as the way people "think about thinking and sleeping and other everyday experiences, along with the way people think about God, which will affect the kind of startling, spontaneous experiences they identify as spiritual experiences."

OPINION: The power is in our hands to actively choose peace

WHEN catastrophes in the world occur, it makes us realise how lucky we are.

The everyday annoyances that seem huge just melt away in insignificance.

With the siege in Sydney occurring, the horrors of radical thinking is now threatening the safety and calmness of our society here in Australia.

How lucky are we in Australia to be blessed with peace and tranquillity for 99.9% of the time while, in other parts of the world, this event would have only been a fleeting moment and forgotten as bigger catastrophes dominated their lives?

Just like after 9/11, it is important to pull together and focus on the outcomes we all want, and work with every segment of society to achieve that preferred outcome.

A very small number of people can create fear and mayhem - but only if we all let them.

It took only a few individuals in Northern Ireland, on both sides, to cause ongoing atrocities for decades; but the wider community's desire for peace stopped the violence. The power is in our hands to actively choose peace, acceptance and avoid judgment and intolerance.

The problem is a small minority of misguided individuals trying to move our society away from the common good. Do not blame any country of origin, religion, skin colour, sexual preference or gender as you will become as bad as them.

At the end of the day, as a community, we should work together to create a wonderful future, eradicating negativity, and be able to peacefully exercise our spiritual beliefs. How each of us achieves spiritual enlightenment is up to each one of us and is nobody else's business.

After all, when we meet our Maker, the truth will be clear. Good luck with your choices.

Assembly of the International Space Station (ISS) is about the construction of an Earth-orbiting space station. Zarya, the first ISS module, was launched by a Proton rocket on 20 November 1998. The STS-88 shuttle mission followed two weeks after Zarya was launched, bringing Unity, the first of three node modules, and connecting it to Zarya. This bare 2-module core of the ISS remained unmanned for the next one and a half years, until in July 2000 the Russian module Zvezda was added, allowing a minimum crew of two astronauts or cosmonauts to be on the ISS permanently.

The ISS has a planned pressurized volume of approximately 1,000 cubic meters, a mass of approximately 400,000 kilograms, approximately 100 kilowatts of power output, a truss 108.4 meters long, modules 74 meters long, and a crew of six. Building the complete station will require more than 40 assembly flights. As of March 2011, 26 Space Shuttle flights have docked with ISS to add elements, and 9 other Shuttle flights have flown logistics-servicing missions to ISS without adding major external elements. These 35 Shuttle missions include 9 SpaceHab and 10 MPLM logistics-servicing missions in various combinations. The last two planned Shuttle flights are due to add one of the two final elements of ISS, followed by one last Proton launch with the planned delivery of the ERA. Other assembly flights have consisted of modules lifted by the Russian Proton rocket or in the case of Pirs and Poisk by a Soyuz-U rocket.[dated info]

Some of the larger modules include:

The space station is located in orbit around the Earth at an altitude of approximately 360km (220mi), a type of orbit usually termed low Earth orbit (the actual height varies over time by several kilometers due to atmospheric drag and reboosts). It orbits Earth in a period of about 90 minutes; by August 2007 it had completed more than 50,000 orbits since launch of Zarya on 20 November 1998.

A total of 14 main pressurized modules are scheduled to be part of the ISS by its completion date in 2010.[1] A number of smaller pressurized sections will be adjunct to them (Soyuz spacecraft (permanently 2 as lifeboats - 6 months rotations), Progress transporters (2 or more), the Quest and Pirs airlocks, as well as periodically the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module, the Automated Transfer Vehicle and the H-II Transfer Vehicle).

The ISS, when completed, will consist of a set of communicating pressurized modules connected to a truss, on which four large pairs of photovoltaic modules (solar panels) are attached. The pressurized modules and the truss will be perpendicular: the truss spanning from starboard to port and the habitable zone extending on the aft-forward axis. Although during the construction the station attitude may vary, when all four photovoltaic modules are in their definitive position the aft-forward axis will be parallel to the velocity vector.[2]

In addition to the assembly and utilization flights, approximately 30 Progress spacecraft flights are required to provide logistics until 2010. Experimental equipment, fuel and consumables are and will be delivered by all vehicles visiting the ISS: the Shuttle, the SpaceX Dragon, the Russian Progress, the European ATV and the Japanese HTV, and space station downmass will be carried back to Earth facilities on both the Shuttle and the Dragon.[3]

At one point, there was some uncertainty over the future of the ISS. The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on 1 February 2003, the subsequent two and a half-year suspension of the U.S. Space Shuttle program, followed by problems with resuming flight operations in 2005, were major obstacles.

The Space Shuttle program resumed flight on 26 July 2005, with the STS-114 mission of Discovery. This mission to the ISS was intended both to test new safety measures implemented since the Columbia disaster, and to deliver supplies to the station. Although the mission succeeded safely, it was not without risk; foam was shed by the external tank, leading NASA to announce future missions would be grounded until this issue was resolved.

Between the Columbia disaster and the resumption of Shuttle launches, crew exchanges were carried out solely using the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Starting with Expedition 7, two-astronaut caretaker crews were launched in contrast to the previously launched crews of three. Because the ISS had not been visited by a shuttle for an extended period, a larger than planned amount of waste accumulated, temporarily hindering station operations in 2004. However Progress transports and the STS-114 shuttle flight took care of this problem.
