Cardinal Tagle pitches humility, spirituality to Nazarene devotees

Turn to a life of humility and spirituality.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle relayed this message to devotees of the Black Nazarene during the liturgical rites at the Quirino Grandstand before dawn Friday.

Devotees flocked to the Quirino Grandstand Thursday for the Pahalik and vigil, which precede the Traslacion where they accompay the image of their patron back to Quiapo Church.

For this year, the Traslacion will follow a route from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church, with a slight detour around Escolta due to a fire that hit a building there Wednesday.

Container vans were also placed at Escolta Street, where a predawn fire razed a building that used to house the City College of Manila on Wednesday.

Inner Truth: Health and Spirituality

The quest for health is universal -- everyone wants it. And current research shows that spirituality plays an important role in establishing true health.

Health is much more than a material body that is free from disease. The World Health Organization defines it as complete physical, mental and social wellbeing.

Im learning that this complete wellbeing is the absolute consciousness of harmony, and of nothing else as explained by spiritual healer Mary Baker Eddy. It is a state of thought, a consciousness of harmony that stems from an awareness of Gods loving presence. And the power of that presence to maintain harmony.

It is the spiritual practice of stillness and prayer that enables me to become conscious of harmony, conscious that all is indeed well in the divine presence. Then physical or mental discord has no room in my thought. This helped me find instantaneous and permanent relief from severe back pain years ago. It continues to help me stay healthy.

Spirituality is indeed good for health thats been my experience.

Look up to God in humility, Tagle tells Nazarene devotees

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle gives his homily at the midnight Mass during the start of feast and traslacion of Black Nazarene at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. EDWIN BACASMAS/INQUIRER

MANILA, PhilippinesManila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on Friday urged the devotees of the Black Nazarene to turn to a life of humility and spirituality.

Look up to God, look back and bow down to Him. Lets make it a pattern of life of spirituality, Tagle said in his homily during the midnight Mass for the feast of Black Nazarene at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

A true devotee is one who look up, look back and bow down to God, knowing fully well that without Him, he is nothing, he added.

According to Tagle, looking up, looking back and bowing down to God are simple ways by which devotees could deepen their devotion to the highly revered black image of Christ that is believed to be miraculous.

Those who will look up to God will have an everlasting life, thats the promise of the Gospel. The most beautiful way to look up is to look at God, Tagle said in the vernacular.

We look back to God who is the source of all our blessings. That is why many devotees are here year after year, rain or shine, barefoot, some are even in wheelchairs. They never forget, they look back to the giver of blessings and good experiences, he added.

To bow down to God is a sign of humility, Tagle said.

We are all sinners and to bow down to God is an admission of our sins. Its like saying we cannot brag or boast about anything, except the fact that we need Him, thats all, he said.

And to bow down is like imitating Jesus, who, despite being the son of God, humbled himself and became man to be with us. He carried our cross and died. That was his way of showing humility, all just because he loves us and he wanted to save us, the cardinal said.

India police probe godman over alleged castration of 400 followers

Provided by AFP Indian spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim -- seen here on January 5, 2015 -- heads the Dera Sacha Sauda organisation based in Haryana state.

Indian police said they are investigating a popular self-styled godman for allegedly encouraging 400 followers to undergo castrations at his ashram so they could get closer to god.

The country's top crime fighting agency has registered a case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim, known as the "guru in bling" for his penchant for garish clothes and jewellery, over the operations in the country's north.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in a statement late Wednesday Rahim is being investigated for criminal intimidation and causing grievous bodily hurt, saying 400 castrations were allegedly carried out.

The guru, who heads the Dera Sacha Sauda organisation based in Haryana state, is already facing trial for conspiracy over the murder of a journalist in 2002 along with claims of sexually exploiting female followers.

The latest case was filed after one of his devotees, Hans Raj Chauhan, lodged a complaint in court alleging he was manipulated into having the "painful" operation at the ashram.

"They were told that only those who get castrated will be able to meet god," Chauhan's lawyer, Navkiran Singh, told AFP on Thursday.

"We will put all the facts of the case to the court and seek compensation for the victims."

He said doctors carried out the castrations over a period from 2000, but for years his client had been too scared to come forward.

The court asked the CBI to undergo an investigation into the alleged castrations.

Japanese space tourist training for spot on ISS

A Japanese entrepreneur plans to train as a cosmonaut in Russia for a possible mission to the International Space Station.

Space tourist Satoshi Takamatsu will fly in the event that another tourist cannot make it: British singer Sarah Brightman.

Takamatsu, 51, is president of Space Travel, a Japanese startup that aims to offer space tourism services.

Space Adventures Ltd., a Virginia-based space tourism operator, announced Wednesday that he is now its client. Space Adventures said Brightman is scheduled to travel to the space station later this year.

We have worked with Mr. Takamatsu over the last decade and as we continue our efforts to expand private spaceflight opportunities, we look forward to work closely with him and his newly formed Space Travel firm in providing these opportunities to the people of Japan, Tom Shelley, president of Space Adventures, said in a statement.

Takamatsu earlier worked for Dentsu Inc., Japans biggest advertising agency, where he devised advertising for beverages and noodles featuring the International Space Station.

Takamatsu, who has already cleared the Russian Federal Space Agencys medical tests and preliminary training program, will start training later this month, mainly at Star City, a town north of Moscow which serves Russias space industry. He will also receive training at NASA.

Takamatsu plans to describe his training for people following his journey online, the company said.

No to space balloon flights in Singapore: CAAS

SINGAPORE: The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore on Friday (Jan 9) disallowed the planned launch of a space balloon flight from Singapore because of "significant safety and operational concerns".

CAAS said in a statement that the position was conveyed to IN.Genius, the local company spearheading the launch, in late 2013.

"Given the high density of air traffic in our skies and of the populace, space balloon flights cannot be launched from Singapore due to safety risks to aircraft in the Singapore Flight Information Region, as well as to lives and property on the ground," it said.

IN.Genius had planned to send the first Singaporean into space for the country's 50th birthday as a gift to the nation. The space capsule would be launched 20km using a stratospheric balloon, cruise for 30 minutes, then return to Earth by parachute and parafoil.

The companys founder Lim Seng had called the plan a viable, proven, safe way of flying to space. The stratospheric balloons have been used by the Russians, Europeans and Americans to launch equipment into space, he said.

TOO MANY RISKS: CAAS

A space balloon has limited steering capability, moves at a relatively slow speed and is highly affected by environmental conditions such as winds. As such, it may drift from its desired flight path and pose safety risks to other aircraft, CAAS said.

To maintain a safety buffer, aircraft will have to be diverted away from a large zone around the balloon's flight path. This will require closure of the affected airspace for prolonged periods, causing severe disruption to civilian air traffic.

"Hundreds of flights and hundreds and thousands of passengers could be adversely affected," CAAS stated.

The operation of the ballon also entails the jettisoning of up to 500kg of ballast, posing a significant danger to persons and property on the ground.

Nasa planet hunter claims 'We'll find an exact Earth replica in 15 years'

Dr Mather from Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland said the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope could find habitable planets The giant tennis court-sized telescope will be used to scour the universe One of its key goals will be to observe worlds in other systems In ten to 15 years Dr Mather says we could find a planet with oceans But he says the only way to visit one would be to 'defeat Einstein' This would mean finding a way to travel faster than the speed of light Earlier this week astronomers announced they had found eight new potentially habitable planets - and two are the most Earth-like ever

Earlier this week astronomers made the groundbreaking announcement that they had found eight new habitable planets using the Kepler space telescope - bringing its total up to 1,000.

But will we ever have a chance to glimpse these planets in greater detail, either by telescope or perhaps by visiting them in the future?

According to one of Nasa's top planet hunters, we will find a planet with oceans like Earth in the next 15 years - but visiting one would require us to overcome Einstein's law of special relativity.

Dr Mather from Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Marylandexplained how the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope could find planets with oceans on them (illustrated). The giant tennis court-sized telescope will be used to scour the universe. His full interview appears in issue 34 of All About Space magazine
