Learning the History of Liberty from the Encyclopedia of Libertarianism

In an interesting discussion of social change and especially the best ways to spread classical liberal ideas at Liberty Funds Online Library of Liberty, historian David M. Hart has high praise for the Encyclopedia of Libertarianism(published by Sage in conjunction with the Cato Institute):

The Encyclopedia of Libertarianismprovides an excellent survey of the key movements, individuals, and events in the evolution of the classical liberal movement.

One should begin with Steve Davies General Introduction, pp. xxv-xxxvii, which is an excellent survey of the ideas, movements, and key events in the development of liberty, then read some of the articles on specific historical periods, movements, schools of thought, and individuals.

He goes on to suggest specific articles in the Encyclopedia that are essential reading for understanding successful radical change in ideas and political and economic structures, in both a pro-liberty and anti-liberty direction. Heres his guide to learning about the history of liberty in the Encyclopedia of Libertarianism:

Theres your college course in the history of liberty right there, all for $125 (or a trip to a good library). You might also start with Chapter 2 of The Libertarian Mind, which is sort of a brief outline of what you could learn from all these articles.

West Michigan ACLU to name Muskegon County Clerk Nancy Waters 'Civil Libertarian of the Year'

MUSKEGON, MI - The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan's Western Branch plans to name Muskegon County Clerk Nancy Waters its 2015 Civil Libertarian of the Year.

Waters was one of only four county clerks in the state - and the only one in West Michigan - to process same-sex marriage licenses a year ago during a legal window of opportunity March 22, 2015. About 50 couples in Muskegon were married.

The ACLU of Michigan Western Branch announced Waters' upcoming award in promotion of an April 16 reception at Muskegon Community College's Overbrook Theatre, 221 S. Quarterline Road in Muskegon.

Waters didn't respond to requests for comment for this story. ACLU representatives were not immediately available for additional comment.

The April 16 event is free and open to the public. The reception begins at 6 p.m. with a program to follow at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. In addition to honoring Nancy Waters, ACLU of Michigan Deputy Director Rana Elmir will speak on current legislative threats to our civil liberties.

Madeira Islands Open gets new summer dates on European Tour

LONDON

The European Tour says it has rescheduled the Madeira Islands Open for July 30 to Aug. 2 after it was cancelled last week because of extreme weather.

Strong winds, dense fog and heavy rain on the Portuguese island left the Clubs de Golf Santo da Serra flooded, with only the first round completed.

Keith Waters, chief operating officer of the European Tour, says "given the important of the Madeira Islands Open... we were very keen to reschedule the tournament." It is the second straight year the competition has been interrupted by bad conditions. Last year, it was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy fog.
