Liberty Reserve laundered $6 billion

The Liberty Reserve electronic currency was really a front for a $6 billion money-laundering operation online, according to US federal prosecutors in New York.

Preet Bharara, the United States attorney in Manhattan, told the New York Times that Liberty Reserve was one of the best ways for criminals to shift their cash around.

Liberty Reserve traded in virtual currency and provided the kind of anonymous and easily accessible banking infrastructure increasingly sought by criminal networks, he said.

Bharara, the United States attorney in Manhattan, and other law enforcement officials, said that the charges mark the end of the largest online money-laundering case in history.

He claimed that over seven years, Liberty Reserve was responsible for laundering billions of dollars, conducting 55 million transactions that involved millions of customers around the world, including about 200,000 in the United States.

Liberty Reserve created a convenient way for criminals to make financial transactions. There was a complicated system designed to allow people to move sums large and small around the world with virtual anonymity.

Liberty Reserve was at the heart of the indictment of eight New Yorkers accused who nicked $45 million from bank machines in 27 countries.

The outfit was incorporated in Costa Rica in 2006 by Arthur Budovsky he was arrested in Spain on last week. He was among seven people charged in the case; five of them were under arrest, while two remained at large in Costa Rica.

Liberty hangs on to top Bucs in series finale, 2-1

Liberty closer Ashton Perritt held Charleston Southern scoreless over final 2 2/3 innings and worked out of a ninth-inning jam to give the Flames a 2-1 win over the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

Perritt got CSU's Jack Crittenberger to pop out on the infield for the game's final out, stranding the tying run in the Bucs' final at-bat. Starter Victor Cole (W, 3-1) scattered five hits and walked three in 6.1 innings to pick up the win.

Liberty (21-10, 7-2 Big South) sweeps the weekend series from CSU (12-17, 3-6) with the win.

Liberty grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run by Becker Sankey, his ninth of the season.

The Flames scored the game's final run as Andrew Yacyk doubled home Dalton Britt to push the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Yacyk was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.

CSU's lone run came in the third when Brandon Burris singled home Sly Edwards. Edwards reached on a throwing error by Flames' third baseman Jake Kimble to set up the unearned run.

Reliever Denis Buckley worked the final 3.1 innings for the Bucs. He walked two and allowed two hits, but held Liberty scoreless.

Starter Kyle McDorman (L, 1-4) had three strikeouts and gave up two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work for the Bucs.

Perritt added a 2-for-5 day at the plate for Liberty.

Lindsey Graham: Im with Libertarians, but I Want to Fix Problems, Not Just Yell

Senator Lindsey Graham isnt the biggest fan of his more libertarian colleagues, but he insists that their differences are only tactical and believes they have lots of common ground to work from.

In an interview with The Gazette this week, Graham talks about his potential 2016 candidacy and talks up his ability to solve hard problems. He says his philosophy is All right, if I get 80 percent of what I want, thats a good day.

Some of Grahams views, especially his foreign policy hawkishness, dont exactly make him the favorite of more libertarian Republicans, but he has this to say in response:

Libertarians want smaller government. Count me in. Libertarians want oversight of government programs and making sure that your freedoms are not easily compromised. Count me in. Ted Cruz wants to fight Obamacare. Count me in What we wind up doing is having tactical differences.

The difference, as Graham put it, is that I want to fix it rather than yell about it.
