Liberty hangs on to top Bucs in series finale, 2-1

CHARLESTON, SC -

Liberty closer Ashton Perritt held Charleston Southern scoreless over final 2 2/3 innings and worked out of a ninth-inning jam to give the Flames a 2-1 win over the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

Perritt got CSU's Jack Crittenberger to pop out on the infield for the game's final out, stranding the tying run in the Bucs' final at-bat. Starter Victor Cole (W, 3-1) scattered five hits and walked three in 6.1 innings to pick up the win.

Liberty (21-10, 7-2 Big South) sweeps the weekend series from CSU (12-17, 3-6) with the win.

Liberty grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run by Becker Sankey, his ninth of the season.

The Flames scored the game's final run as Andrew Yacyk doubled home Dalton Britt to push the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Yacyk was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.

CSU's lone run came in the third when Brandon Burris singled home Sly Edwards. Edwards reached on a throwing error by Flames' third baseman Jake Kimble to set up the unearned run.

Reliever Denis Buckley worked the final 3.1 innings for the Bucs. He walked two and allowed two hits, but held Liberty scoreless.

Starter Kyle McDorman (L, 1-4) had three strikeouts and gave up two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work for the Bucs.

Perritt added a 2-for-5 day at the plate for Liberty.
