The Multiverse: Is There Evidence For It? – Futurism

Image collected whilst scouring the CMBR (Source)

Some of you may recall a popular article we posted several months ago, dealing with voids and super-void. These celestial regions (which are devoid of stars, galaxies, planets, clusters, and other forms of matter) were initially discovered while physicists were busy mapping the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). This radiation is a relic from the big bang; it originated during the opening chapter of our universe, when the cosmos was a mere 380, 000 years in age. This background radiation should be evenly dispersed throughout the universe. Instead, physicists noted a huge cold spot stretching across an expanse of space almost one billion light-years in diameter. This cold spot is located in the constellation of Eridanus, and the discovery baffled astronomers.

Credit: Scientific American (Source)

Since then, many theories have surfaced in an attempt to explain the discrepancy; some of these theories argue that this area might be occupied by auniverse-in-mass black hole or perhaps, it is a leftover souvenirfrom a change in the texture of spacetime. There is also the super-void hypothesis, and some have even suggested that the void is evidence of a parallel (or a sister) universe -meaning that both our universe and our sister-verse belong to a larger multiverse.

The last controversial idea one than many physicists want to believe in was cooked up by Laura Mersini-Houghton, who subsequently made five predictions about the nature of this cold spot in hopes of vindicating the existence of a multiverse. The idea proposed was essentially a landscape multiverse idea. This is something that is believed to be inherently tied to the multiple dimensions of string theory, which gives us an idea of the principles that must be met in order for life to develop in any given universe. In this scenario, our universe is but one in a massively huge number of universes perhaps its just one in an INFINITE number of infinitely large universeshurts your head, doesnt it? (it does mine too)

Out of the five predictions made in Mersini-Houghtons paper, entitled Cosmological Avatars of the Landscape I: Bracketing the SUSY Breaking Scale, 4 have been verified, or at least they havent been ruled out. Here they are as follows:

Lets say our universe is a part of a larger number of multiple universes, our universe most likely formed through a bubble in another universe, created through quantum fluctuations within the vacuum energy (maybe an infinite number of them formed this way too), spawning a universe equipped with its own laws of physics, energy levels, matter concentrations, arrow of time, and entropy level. Some of these said bubbles could collapse in on themselves before undergoing something similar to inflation, with only a certain number of them progressing beyond that point, depending on the characteristics the baby bubble developed early on.

After the bubble stabilizes, it would effectively be cut off from the universe it was born into, losing all of the information from it. However; it could hypothetically interact gravitationally with other universe, which is exactly what Houghton thinks happened in the cold spot in the CMBR an area of space seemingly containing an imprint of another universe apart from our own. Its even possible that in theory, another bubble is developing in our universe.

Though I remain highly skeptical (and so should you. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, after all) This could very well help explain why our universe appears to be fine-tuned for life from our perspective. After all, if an infinite number of universes exist, an infinite number of them would have each and every characteristic our universe has, with an infinite number of them that are radically different than ours. Can you imagine living in a universe where the arrow of time runs backward, with gravity acting as a repellent force? (basically, a universe where dark energy is the the norm)

Whilst living in a multiverse, its conceivable that such a universe can and does exist. In fact, its quantum mechanics in action. When internal inflation, string theory, Copenhagen interpretation, and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle are thrown into the mix, we get a universe (our universe) created at the whim of a wave function, collapsing with the properties our universe has.

Again with just about everything skepticism is key.Mersini-Houghton, the main proponent of the landscape multiverse idea, is also a fan of string theory. Many of you may know of it as a discombobulated mess that belongs with the crackpot models of the universe instead of acting as if its even plausible to explain the properties of the universe. Were still in the beginning stages of uncovering many universal mysteries so more data is needed.

Texas Beaches and Oceanside Attractions

Texas Beach. Rob Stinnett/rstinnett/flickr.com Creative Commons License

Updated November 04, 2015.

Texas is known for a lot of things. However, many people overlooked the excellent beaches that are located along the Texas coast. With over 600 miles of shoreline, there is no shortage of sand for beachgoers. Here is a list of some of the top spots to spend day at the beach in Texas.

Corpus Christi/Padre Island National Seashore The mainland portion of Corpus Christi is metropolitan. However, cross the causeway to Padre Island and the urban feel begins to fade.

As you head south on Park Road 22 down Padre Island National Seashore, the modern world disappears.

Galveston Island Galveston Island offers many beach-going options. Inside the city of Galveston, the seawall and adjacent sand strip is popular among visitors, as are Stewart Beach and East Beach. Further down the island, Galveston State Park and West Beach are favorite sandy hangouts.

After a day of surf, sand and sun, head to the Strand to shop or visit one of Galvestons many excellent eateries.

Mustang Island/Port Aransas This quaint, central coast beach is located at the northern-most end of Padre Island. The ferry ride across to Port Aransas is a great way to leave the real world behind and begin your vacation. Things only get better as you visit Port As many shops and restaurants or stake out a secluded stretch of sand on Mustang Island.

Sea Rim State Park A mix of marsh and beach, Sea Rim State Park isnt a typical beach destination. However, this state park, which is located just south of Beaumont/Port Arthur is a nature-lovers delight. Bird-watchers and beach-goers often co-exist on this stretch of sand, which is the northern-most beach in Texas.

South Padre Island The most pristine beach in Texas is also the most difficult to get to. Located scant miles above the Mexican border, the South Padre surf is often a Caribbean-like clear/green as it laps against the grainy white sand. Across the Brazos Santiago Pass is isolated Boca Chica Beach.

During your off-beach hours, try SPIs sizzling nightlife, excellent restaurants and variety of curio shops. Other options include heading across the bridge to historic Port Isabel or across the border to Matamoros, Mexico.

Keep in mind, these are but a few of the beaches available in Texas. They are listed above in alphabetical order, not by any sort of rating, since they each have such diverse characteristics. But rest assured, whatever type of beach you have in mind can be found in Texas. And, again, Texas beaches are open year around, meaning there is no end to beachy fun for dedicated beachgoers.

El Paso Tourism: Best of El Paso, TX – TripAdvisor

For an alternative Texas experience, consider El Paso. Located far from the bright lights of Dallas or San Antonio, in the state's western corner along the sparkling shores of the Rio Grande, El Paso boasts a different feel than its eastern counterparts. A true melting pot of American and Mexican culture, the combination is noticeable everywhere. Visit the El Paso Museum of Art and see American works from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as Mexican colonial art and retablos from the 1700s and 1800s. Restaurants serve authentic Mexican cuisine, Texas barbecue or a little of both. While this fusion of cultures draws some, the rock climbers who descend on El Paso have only one thing in mind: scaling the massive boulders of Hueco Tanks State Park. Those who prefer the ground can wander through the park's interpretive center and see ancient Indian pictographs. Other popular El Paso pastimes include golf, mountain biking and our personal favorite, stargazing.

Adjuvant Vaccine Development – University of Michigan

During the 1990s, we developed a composite material that resulted in a new class of antimicrobial agents with activity against grampositive bacteria and spores, fungi and viruses. These nanoemulsions are oil-in-water, nanoscale (< 600 nm) emulsions formulated with surfactants. Additional studies demonstrated that nanoemulsions are not only effective antimicrobials but potential intranasal vaccine adjuvants as well. The technology was licensed to NanoBio Corp. in 2000 for commercialization and is still a major scientific focus for the Institute.

While originally developed as microbicidal agents, studies fortuitously demonstrated that nanoemulsions are a promising new type of adjuvant for nasopharyngeal vaccines. Work was being performed to show that placing nanoemulsion into the nares of mice could protect them from subsequent respiratory challenge with an LD90 of Influenza virus. The mice were successfully protected from challenge even two hours after the material was placed into the nares. However, when challenged with live virus three weeks later, the same animals were protected from Influenza pneumonitis without nanoemulsion prophylaxis, and were shown to have high titers of anti-influenza antibodies. Subsequent studies documented that placing Influenza virus in the nares with nanoemulsion on only a single occasion produced strong protective immunity. (Myc A, Kukowska-Latallo JF, Bielinska AU, Cao P, Myc PP, Janczak K, Sturm T, Grabinski MS, Young K, Chang J, Hamouda T, Olszewski MA and Baker JR, Jr: Development of immune response that protects mice from viral pneumonitis after a single intranasal immunization with influenza A virus and nanoemulsion. Vaccine 21(25-26); 2003, 3801-3814).

Mice were vaccinated one time with nanoemulsion alone, formaldehyde-killed virus, formaldehyde-killed virus-nanoemulsion, or virus/nanoemulsion mixture. Sera were collected on day 20 of the experiment for the assessment of IgG. Antibodies levels were expressed as an index of the geometric mean +/- SD for each experimental group. P-value was calculated using Student's t-test with C-Cochran and Cox correction. Symbol (*) depicts significance (P< 0.05) between animals vaccinated with formaldehyde-killed virus/nanoemulsion versus animals vaccinated with virus/nanoemulsion.

Mice immunized intranasally with the virus/nanoemulsion mixture did not show signs of illness, and their core body temperatures were within normal range for 14 days. Moreover, the lungs of immunized animals appeared grossly normal, and histological examination showed no indication of influenza pneumonitis or upper airway inflammation. These results show that nanoemulsions can inactivate virus without causing upper or lower airway mucosal toxicity in treated animals.

As current approaches to vaccination for a number of viral agents have drawbacks due to the use of live virus, complex vaccination protocols or the addition of adjuvants unacceptable for humans, we have continued our determination whether mixing nanoemulsion with specific viral agents will provide a rapid and effective means for a killed virus vaccine for certain viral agents.

Instead of virus, we have also used purified recombinant proteins placed in the nanoemulsion to document that this mixture induced mucosal immunity and systemic TH1 responses. This was of interest, as there was no toxin or other component other than the nanoemulsion (diluted 100 fold in saline) and the recombinant protein antigen. Given the safety profile of the nanoemulsion, these findings supported the further investigation of nanoemulsions as clinically useful nasopharyngeal adjuvants for humans.

MNiMBs has been fortunate to be well funded in pursuing nanoemulsions as a mucosal vaccine adjuvant. MNiMBS Scientists are currently funded to pursue nanoemulsion based vaccines for:

Click each link for more details on specific vaccines being developed.

Race Culture: Recent Perspectives on the History of Eugenics

The American Historical Review

Description: The American Historical Review (AHR) is the official publication of the American Historical Association (AHA). The AHA was founded in 1884 and chartered by Congress in 1889 to serve the interests of the entire discipline of history. Aligning with the AHAs mission, the AHR has been the journal of record for the historical profession in the United States since 1895the only journal that brings together scholarship from every major field of historical study. The AHR is unparalleled in its efforts to choose articles that are new in content and interpretation and that make a contribution to historical knowledge. The journal also publishes approximately one thousand book reviews per year, surveying and reporting the most important contemporary historical scholarship in the discipline.

Coverage: 1895-2009 (Vol. 1, No. 1 - Vol. 114, No. 5)

The "moving wall" represents the time period between the last issue available in JSTOR and the most recently published issue of a journal. Moving walls are generally represented in years. In rare instances, a publisher has elected to have a "zero" moving wall, so their current issues are available in JSTOR shortly after publication. Note: In calculating the moving wall, the current year is not counted. For example, if the current year is 2008 and a journal has a 5 year moving wall, articles from the year 2002 are available.

Beach and Water Activities in Mississippi’s Gulf Coast

Care to switch up the sand youre on? Hop on a Ship Island Excursion from Gulfport Small Craft Harbor to West Ship Island, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. 12 miles offshore from Gulfport, the island offers gorgeous Gulf waters for swimming, sunbathing, shelling and more. In fact, a chain of Gulf Coast islands, including East & West Ship Island, limits the amount of strong waves reaching the mainland beaches, creating calm, gentle waters across the Coast.

Paddle sports anyone? Theres more than enough water around here to keep a paddle sports party going. Or should we say flowing?

When To Go

The Fall Pilgrimage of Homes includes affluent mansions, historic plantations and beautiful southern belles which exemplify America's deep south and Civil War era history. Most of the striking homes that take part in the tour are private homes that only open up to the public during the pilgrimages which begin in September and run for a month. Book Natchez hotels well ahead of time and consider a Mississippi tour along the river to round out a trip.

The winter months are the best time for a Mississippi fishing trip and Red Fish and Crappies are the best catches. Forget any ideas of ice fishing! The Mississippi winter months are a temperate time of year making a trip on the water extremely pleasant. When fishing in saltwater the Redfish swim along the shallow parts of the shoreline looking for a meal of shrimp, crabs and small minnows. A Mississippi River vacation is ideal for fishing as well. The low levels of water running down to the Gulf Coast create excellent opportunities for a good catch.

A popular Mississippi river vacation choice is a houseboat rental which can be had anytime of year. Catering to both anglers and non-anglers this type of holiday provides something for everyone including sightseeing, swimming, fishing and more. If your Mississippi River vacation destination is anywhere near Natchez don't miss The Great Mississippi River Balloon Race which happens every year at the end of October and features colorful hot air balloon races.

A Mississippi fishing trip can be taken anywhere along the Mississippi River or in the south along the Gulf Coast for saltwater fishing. A saltwater trip can see you catching the likes of Shark, Red Snapper, Trout, King Mackerel and more. When discovering the Gulf Coast during the winter pair your Mississippi fishing trip with a tour of the coastal highway. Head to Biloxi and try your hand at gaming. Biloxi casinos are some of the best in the state and offer the most up-to-date machines and table games along with world-class accommodations and dining.

Spring is a beautiful time for Mississippi travel and sees less action from the masses. The temperatures are pleasant and the Gulf Coast normally sees higher temperatures than the rest of the state year-round. If your Mississippi vacation is during the spring one of the best places to head to is Tupelo. The annual festivals and events in Tupelo create a fun backdrop to any trip. Though small in size the town is big on excitement during this time of year where the small-town festivals offer excellent southern hospitality. For car-lovers the Big Suede Cruise kicks off at the beginning of May with plenty of exceptional classic cars, entertainment great southern fare.

Summer is the best time to enjoy the Gulf Islands National Seashore or any place along the Gulf Coast. This is the best time of year to explore the coastal Mississippi beaches or a trip to Ship Island. Temperatures get extremely hot and many opt for waterpark adventures to cool off during Mississippi travel in the summer. Both Geyser Falls Waterpark northeast of Jackson and Gulf Island Waterpark between Gulfport and Biloxi offer a huge amount of wild water fun for the entire family.

Mississippi's climate is defined by warm months with the absence of any extreme cold temperatures. Summer months can be extremely hot yet it's still the most popular time of year for a Mississippi vacation. A Mississippi River vacation is ideal in the summer and perfect for cooling off when away from the Gulf Coast waters.
