4 Reasons New Cryptocurrencies Keep Getting Worse – The Merkle

There is no shortage in the world of cryptocurrencies, as new coins are seemingly being created every single day. This massive influx of new cryptocurrencies only floods the ecosystem, though, as the number of currencies having any intrinsic value is fairly limited. It is also much harder to come up with a valuable and creative idea, rather than copying code and hoping to raise a lot of money during an ICO.

Ever since alternative cryptocurrencies became a thing, there has been a growing number of new coins. Unfortunately, very few of these currencies offer something new. In fact, most of them copy existing code from a different currency and change a few of the variables. We even have a tutorial on how to create an altcoin in under an hour. A lot of developers create multiple coins along the way, hoping for some people to invest bitcoin into their worthless project. With over 7,000 altcoins in existence today, it is evident the market is oversaturated and running out of ideas.

An often heard sentiment among altcointraders is how there are particular times of the year when alternative cryptocurrencies seem to do well. The phrase alts are back is uttered quite often, even though this statement has no meaning whatsoever. While it is true one can make a good profit from a new altcoin once it hits its first exchange, the successes are short-lived every single time.

This is also one of the biggest dangers when investing in altcoins. Every time a new coin hits an exchange, there will be pump-and-dump cycles which will catch newcomer somewhere. Rest assured the vast majority of outcomes offers no value and only serve to make a select group of people richer every time a new coin is listed on an exchange.

One of the things a lot of people have problems with is just how every new altcoin has to provide some sort of financial benefit to the developers. Either a fixed amount of coins is controlled by the developers, or they organize an ICO to raise money. Satoshi Nakamoto created bitcoin without any financial incentive whatsoever, as running an initial coin offering or creating a pre-mine was never the objective in the first place.

Even though there are projects with a legitimate ICO in the cryptocurrency world, the whole concept of raising money before even showing what the code can do has gotten somewhat of a bad reputation. Investing in an idea is very difficult in the cryptocurrency world, as most of these ideas exist in other currencies already. Moreover, with a growing number of ICOs, there is a bigger chance investors will buy an altcoin that is abandoned by the developer once the money changes hands.

There is no way to ignore the obvious elephant in the room here. Most altcoins, with the exception of maybe two dozen, are scams. Anyone who invests money into these projects will lose funds over time. One could even argue there is no need for additional cryptocurrencies at this point, as even Bitcoin hasnt caught mainstream attention quite yet. Developers are more than welcome to submit their idea for features, privacy, and anonymity to existing branches of cryptocurrency development. Not every new idea warrants the creation of yet another altcoin.

Bitcoin Drops as Chinese Exchanges Stop Cryptocurrency Withdrawals – Finance Magnates

From as high as $1070 recently, the price of Bitcoin fell to as low as $910 today before settling around $985 as of now. This comes afterat least two of the leading Chinese exchanges, OKCoin and Huobi, notified clients of an immediate ban on Bitcoin and Litecoin withdrawals, with RMB withdrawals unaffected, while theyupgrade their AML systems according to the law which is estimated to take a month.

Want to learn more? Bobby Lee, the CEO of BTCC, will be giving the keynote speech about Bitcoin and China atthe iFX EXPO in Hong Kong, register now.

Earlier today, the Chinese central bank officially called on nine of the smaller cryptocurrency trading venues in the country to followKYC/AML rulesbut that failed to make a serious impact to the BTC/USD exchange rate.

Charles Hayter, the CEO of CryptoCompare.com, explained: When China sneezes Bitcoin catches a cold. The PBoC moves to regulate Bitcoin more stringently will bring short term woes but will ultimately strengthen the ecosystem.Volumes can be expected to again slow in China as more friction is incorporated in the form of KYC and AML policies. For the duration of this transition the CNY-BTC pairs can be expected to trade at a discount to other fiat-BTC pairs.

Hayter added: The Chinese authorities momentum has been considered and communicative but past scandals have seen governments make examples although the Chinese Bitcoin exchanges cant be said to be anything other than cowering at present. At the moment bitcoin is in limbo caught between Chinese regulatory moves on the one hand and scaling, the potential for ETF approval with the resultant flow of institutional money on the other. Then there is global uncertainty with bitcoin acting as a form of digital gold.

London, UK - February 9, 2017 - (Newswire.com)

Centurion is a unique cryptocurrency launching today on February 9, 2017. The new cryptocurrency draws lessons from Bitcoin and other altcoins to offer an efficient and easy-to-use option for the cryptocurrency community. As the Bitcoin network struggles to clear the transaction backlog while waiting for a scalability solution,Centurion can process and confirm transactions in under 6 minutes.

Also, the cryptocurrency protocol has a block size of 2 MB, which is twice the Bitcoin block size. Just like in the Roman saga, Centurion is the protector of children and the cryptocurrency strives to help kids worldwide through its very own charity Centurion4Children; which will receive an initial donation of 5 million Centurions.

Centurion can be used for buying products and services. Readymade merchant payment API libraries can be easily integrated into websites to start accepting the cryptocurrency. The team behind Centurion is already working with some of the big names to ensure adoption. The first adopter of Centurion will be a big online store offering more than 100 e-books and 50 videos on marketing, cryptocurrencies, internet tips, tricks, businesses, etc. The partnerships will be revealed shortly after launch with more stores to follow soon after.

Mining and Mining Pools

Compared to other cryptocurrencies,Centurion has the most advanced and easy-to-use mining pools in place for the benefit of both experienced and first-time miners. The Centurion mining pools do not require miners to sign up and manually withdraw their accumulated share of cryptocurrency. Instead, they will be receiving funds directly in their respective wallets. This setup will not only ensure the ease of use but also reduce the risk of attacks on the mining pools wallets. The auto payouts are set to execute every few minutes.

The cryptocurrency differentiates its users into two distinct groups, the specialist group comprising of experienced cryptocurrency community members who have a better understanding of mining process, software, and various other aspects. The other group consisting of casual users who are not well-versed with the technicalities but are known to use cryptocurrency for transactions and trading purposes.

Centurion understands that casual users are going to outnumber the specialist users, playing an important role in driving the cryptocurrencys adoption. It offers them an opportunity to be part of the mining community by providing simple, pre-configured files that can be readily downloaded to start CPU and GPU mining.

Centurion4Children

In the Roman saga, Centurion was a hero that protected children and just as its namesake Centurion strives to improve the life of children worldwide, one child at a time.

Centurion4Children is donating 5 million Centurion coins to well-established charity organizations. It is also raising funds within the community and through thewebsite. The foundation is already represented in India, as well as Africa and Europe with official charity partnerships being revealed in March, 2017. Centurion4Children is currently raising funds for following causes:

Support a Child and its Entire Family Sponsor a Boy Safe Water for Children in Development Countries Sustainable Schools

Premine/Coin Reserve

To cover promotion costs and to kick-start the donations distributed by Centurion4Children, the coin has reserved 50 Million of its tokens.

The cryptocurrency platform will soon embark on a marketing campaign in association with Cryptonetwork ltd, a Dubai-based entity which has a network of people spread across India, Germany, Italy, Spain and several other countries. They will be involved in various promotional activities, including the sale of products and services for which they will receive rewards in Centurion and Bitcoin. An estimated 20 million Centurion tokens over a period of 5 years has been earmarked for such promotional purposes.

Centurion will donate 5 million of its reserved coins to charity and the remaining 50% will be used to reward early adopters, investors, related projects and talented individuals within the community working to improve the Centurion cryptocurrency.

About Centurion

Centurion is cryptocurrency that focuses mainly on the ease of use, ease of mining and faster transactions. The platform gives importance to existing cryptocurrency users and newbies alike. It has also partnered with Cryptonetwork ltd to increase usage and adoption of Centurion tokens.

Why Bitcoin and Blockchain Are ‘Relatively Safe’ – CryptoCoinsNews

In a report by Swiss multinational financial institution Credit Suisse, bitcoin and blockchain are deemed to be relatively safe.

Bitcoin has some unique risks, the report noted. The value of the cryptocurrency has been three times more volatile than the price of oil and 11 times more than the post-Brexit exchange rate between the British pound and the U.S. dollar, according to the banks markets research department.

Bitcoin transfers are also irreversible, so someone making a mistake entering an account number when making a payment will be out of luck. In addition, if a bitcoin user loses their private key, they can lose all their bitcoin.

Bitcoins blockchain architecture has demonstrated immunity to hacking risks. The blockchain is not an interconnected series of individual accounts, but a record of past transactions. When a user wants to transfer bitcoins, all computers running the bitcoin software process the senders signature through an algorithm and checks the past transactions encoded in the blockchain to ensure the sender owns the bitcoins they say they do.

Other computers then verify the recipients work. The transaction is then aggregated with other transactions, and computers running the bitcoin software, known as miners, race to solve a mathematical puzzle to verify the transactions. One miner wins the race, while the others verify the accuracy of the solution. When they agree the transactions are valid, the miner winningthe race receives new bitcoins, thereby increasing the bitcoin supply.

Theoretically, someone could hack into the blockchain and alter the record to make it look like previous bitcoin transactions transferred money to the hackers account. But it would require huge computing power. Bitcoin users verify a transaction by looking at all past transactions, so a hacker needs to solve the mathematical puzzle linked to a particular block to manipulate it, and also with the blocks that come after it.

Blocks are only considered valid six blocks deep into the chain. The deeper one goes into the blockchain, the more computing power needed to alter records.

Concentrated share among bitcoin miners also presents a potential risk. If a single party gained control over 51 percent of the bitcoin network, it could theoretically stop legitimate new transactions from settling or undoing recent confirmations, potentially enabling it to double spend the bitcoins.

Credit Suisse, with 30 percent of the network, has calculated that a malevolent actor has a 40 percent chance of mining six consecutive blocks in one week, enabling them to alter transactions. In the event of a so-called 51 percent attack, however, bitcoins value would plummet. In other words, miners attacking the network would also underminethe value of the same assets they attempted to steal, along with the assets they already own.

To acquire 30 percent of the network, the malevolentactor would need to mine past blocks. Hence, they have a stake in keeping the ledger intact.

Most bitcoin users use online exchanges to exchange fiat currency for bitcoin, and digital wallets that facilitate payments. Both have been suffered cyberattacks. In August 2016, hackers stole 119,756 bitcoins on deposit with the Bitfinex exchange.

The Mt. Gox exchange filed for bankruptcy in 2014, claiming hackers stole 850,000 bitcoins. Only 24 percent of the coins have been recovered. Japanese prosecutors charged ex-CEO Mark Karpeles with embezzlement. Various articles have laid the blame for the exchanges problems on unorthodox management.

The bottom line is that blockchain technology and bitcoin trading are relatively safe. Complications arise when people enter the mix.

Comets clinch Coastal League – Sports – – Chinook Observer – Chinook Observer

DAMIAN MULINIX/For the Observer

Naselles Taylor Ford defended at midcourt during the Comets win over Taholah Saturday.

DAMIAN MULINIX/For the Observer

Naselles Kyryn Jacot looked to make a cross-court pass during Saturdays game with Taholah.

DAMIAN MULINIX/For the Observer

Naselles Sophie Scrabeck wrestled a loose ball free during the Comets 43-31 win over Taholah.

DAMIAN MULINIX/For the Observer

Naselles Lilli Zimmerman defended a shot by Taholahs Nettie Grover.

NASELLE Against their perennial competitor for the Coastal League title, the Lady Comets offense was stymied early. Taholah held Naselle to just one point until the final possession of the first quarter.

Taholah concentrated on denying baskets to stars Tayler Ford and Ellie Chapman, and Naselles third scorer, Taylor Gudmundsen, was out with an illness. The Comets found answers from their rotation of inside players, who also anchored a strong defense. Without any player scoring more than six points, the Comets beat Taholah 41-31 to clinch the Coastal League title on senior night Saturday, Feb. 4.

Ford had burned the Lady Chitwhins for 30 points in Naselles January win, so Taholah knew it could not leave her any space to shoot this time. The Comets took a while to figure out how to attack Taholahs defense. It looked kind of like a man defense, kind of like a zone, said Naselle coach Rose Nisbet. They were playing man on Tayler and Ellie, and inside they had a triangle zone with one player at the top of the key and two near the basket. We figured out where the openings were.

Lily Harman put back her own miss off a baseline drive at the end of the first quarter, cutting the Chitwhins lead to 9-3, and beginning a 19-0 run that lasted through the early third quarter. Our defense feeds our offense, said Chapman. We held them scoreless the whole second quarter, and [those stops] helped get our offense going.

Off a long defensive rebound in that second quarter, Chapman took off and delivered through traffic to Ford, who hit a layup that tied the game at nine. Chapman found Hailey Weston out ahead of the defense shortly after, and fired a long arcing pass to Ford for a 16-9 lead.

The Comets were also finding success in the post, as their frontcourt players set each other up with passes. They were doubling Ellie and Tayler, Weston said. We had open shots if we could get it inside. The Comets post rotation of Weston, Kyryn Jacot, Amelia Tutuu, and Lilli Zimmerman combined for 22 points in the game.

While the Lady Comets were extremely balanced on offense, the Chitwhins relied on Denise Dolan, who scored 15 points. Chapman guarded Dolan and stayed in front of her, reacting quickly to her moves. However, Dolan got going in the third quarter, hitting a three-pointer and scoring twice in fast breaks. Then, with the Comets lead dwindling, Chapman dived to save a ball going out of bounds but threw it right to Dolan, who took off in the open court again. Ford made a fantastic play, getting in Dolans path to the basket and forcing her to pull back; Taholah came up empty on the possession.

Taholah scored five points in the final 30 seconds of the third. Kayleah McCrory rattled in a three-pointer, and Dolan hit a pull-up 16-footer with seven seconds in the period. Taholah won the quarter 18-8, with Dolan scoring nine points in the period, and Taholah led 27-26 heading into the fourth.

Sophie Scrabeck found Tutuu open in the high post for a bucket to start the fourth quarter. That started a 10-0 run, which Scrabeck capped with a pull-up fade-away jumper with 4:12 remaining.

The 54 Chapman leapt between two big defenders to tip an offensive rebound to Ridgeway, then scored on a pass from Ridgeway, a characteristic play in the last regular season game of a memorable career. That gave Naselle a 38-29 lead with 3:25 to go, and the Comets closed out the win.

Kyryn Jacot, Lily Harman and Lilli Zimmerman led Naselle with six points apiece, with Jacot hitting three of four shots. Chapman had six assists, no turnovers, ten rebounds and three steals. Ford came up with four steals.

Senior Night

Naselle honored seniors Ellie Chapman, Tayler Ford, Amelia Tutuu, Kyryn Jacot and Morgan Ridgeway before their final regular season game.

Ford transferred to Naselle as a sophomore and emerged as a reliable double-figures scorer. This is the sweetest group of girls Ive ever been around, she said. The team has grown so much.

Chapman, with her dazzling passes, made her teammates better. Shes a fun teammate, said Hailey Weston, a sophomore. We come up with plays during timeouts, and shes always looking to set other people up. Shes so unselfish; she passes more than she should. Weston credits the recent growth of her own game to Chapman and Ford, along with coach Nisbet. Tayler is funny, but at the same time very serious about basketball, keeping the team focused, Weston said.

Tutuu enjoyed this season more than any other in her basketball career. It went by fast Before this year, I wasnt really much of a basketball person, said Tutuu, who stood out in other sports throughout her career and has emerged as a defensive stopper this season. Ive gained confidence. This team has been together for all sports and gotten closer.

Oakville falls to NHS

OAKVILLE Naselle beat Oakville 49-19 on Jan. 31.

The game got off to a slow start offensively, but Ellie Chapman opened the second period hitting a tough running floater while being fouled. Chapman completed the three-point play just 13 seconds into the quarter for an 11-1 lead. Hailey Weston twice beat the defense down-court for easy baskets to help the Comets build a 22-9 lead by halftime.

Tayler Ford put the game out of reach with nine quick points at the start of the second half. She twice cut along the baseline to work her way open for corner three-pointers. On the second such play, a lunging defender fouled Ford as she made the shot, and Ford converted the four-point play for a 33-9 lead with 5:09 to go in the third.

Ford finished with 18 points, Chapman had 12 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Weston contributed 11 points in the post.

NHS 63, Quinault 18

Naselle beat Lake Quinault 63-18 on Feb. 2. Sophomore Lily Harman had a career-high 15 points, Tayler Ford added 16, and Ellie Chapman had 10 points and 10 assists.

Column: Archibald’s strong season continues for Comets – Utica Observer Dispatch

Ben Birnell

UTICA A former Utica Comets player provided a possible explanation for what has been helping Darren Archibald this season.

Brandon DeFazio, who played with the Utica Comets and Archibald during the franchises first two seasons in Utica, joked recently on the social media site Twitter that a well-known Italian chain restaurant might be part of the reason for some of the success the Newmarket, Ontario, native has had this season.

"(Archibald) must be eating @OliveGarden," tweeted DeFazio, who is a member of the Dallas Stars organization this season.

Whatever Archibald who turns 27 on Thursday is eating this season, it seems to be working for the Comets left winger in his fifth professional season.

It is a pleasant surprise for the Comets in a season filled with numerousups and downs.

With a power-play goal from in front in the first-period of Tuesdays 4-2 loss against Toronto, Archibald became the teams leader in goals while playing in his 300th career regular season game in the American Hockey League. The goal on the man-advantage was his second in as many games and is notable because Archibald, who has also been a key member of the teams 16th-ranked penalty kill this season, had zero power-play goals in 224 previous regular-season games with the Comets. Hes also found chemistry playing a majority of the season with Curtis Valk.

His career-best 15th goal is another milestone this season for Archibald, who also has career-bests in assists (15) and points (30) while playing in each of the teams 45 games. Hes also been a stranger to the penalty box, totaling 25 minutes with a lone fight major. By comparison, he had 96 penalty minutes in 51 regular-season games in an injury-shortened 2015-16 season.

It is all part of how Comets coach Travis Green has said Archibalds game has grown this season.

When Archibald signed an American Hockey League deal with Comets in July to play in Utica for a fourth season, the reaction among fans on social media seemed to be mixed. There were those who were obviously happy about Archibald returning to the fold hes a favorite among Mohawk Valley hockey fans because for his physical presence over the past few seasons. There were some who wondered how much a help he could provided.

Recently, a small group of Comets fans have been chanting Archibalds name late in close games at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in hopes of seeing another. Hes done it three times this season, most recently against Syracuse on Jan. 11. Before this season, he hadnt scored any winning goals in 266 regular-season games.

With the Comets (18-19-6-2) in a tight battle for the fourth spot in the North Division fifth-place Utica is three points back of Toronto heading into Fridays game between the teams at the Aud will continue to need Archibalds spark with 31 remaining games.

Perhaps more Italian food is the answer.

Some Asshole Star Just Ripped Apart Halley’s Comet’s Brother – Gizmodo

Image: NASA, ESA, and Z. Levy (STScI)

Heres your daily reminder that the final frontier is ruthless: For the first time ever, scientists have spotted a comet-like object getting torn apart by a white dwarf star. Thankfully, this pugnacious little starcalled WD 1425+540is located 170 lightyears away from Earth in the constellation Botes, which may or may not be a piece of IKEA furniture.

No one expected stumble across this cosmic catastrophe; Scientists at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii discovered the scene while they were using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope simply to observe WD 1425+540's stellar atmosphere. But they quickly found evidence a comet-like object had wandered too close to the white dwarf, and was in the midst of getting ripped apart by the stars gravity. While white dwarf stars have been known to rip apart asteroid-like objects, this is the first time one has been observed tearing up something icy and comet-like.

The team determined that this ill-fated object was actually very similar in composition to Halleys Comet, which comes close to Earth once every 75 years. Both comets are rich in essential elements like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, although this new one was 100,000 times more massive than its famous relative. It also contained twice as much water, so its demise must have made quite a mess.

This cosmic oddity might be evidence of something larger. The researchers think there could be an entire belt of these comet-like objects in the vicinity of WD 1425+540, organized much like the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune. While its not definitive proof, its an idea that could warrant future analysis.

That said, RIP random comet thing. We hardly knew ye.

AamionGoodwin had an unorthodox upbringing.A product of his fathers rejection of the constraints of modern society, Aamion spent much of his childhood bouncing between Fiji, Australia, and Kauai. Now a father himself,Aamion, along with his wife Daize, are passing along that love for cultures around the world on to their young children, Given (their son), and True (their newborn daughter).

Givenis a cinematically stunning film thattraces the travels of the Goodwins over the course of a year around the world, from Hawaii to Australia, Nepal to Peru. And its all told from the perspective of the Goodwins son, hence the name.

More than anything, says the films director Jess Bianchi, Given is meant to show people not that the Goodwins way of life is the right way, or that theyre the poster children for an alternative lifestyle, but simply theres a way to get by that exists outside the norm. I do hope the film will inspire people to break from whatever, like, block they have in their life, Bianchi told The Inertia in an interview. Whether its a family that wants to travel the world, or maybe its just a block in their smaller circle. But just to get out of their ordinary life thats obviously not working for them, and just see that theres a whole different life they could be living.

Check out the website to find a screening near you. The film will also be available onFebruary 28 atwww.giventhemovie.com/shop and all platforms in March.

World Travel Holdings ranks in the top 50 among companies hiring telecommuters

Wilmington, Mass. (PRWEB) February 09, 2017

World Travel Holdings is proud to announce that for the third year in a row it has been named to FlexJobs' annual list of the 100 Top Companies to Watch for Telecommuting and Remote Jobs. This list is based on an analysis of more than 47,000 companies and their telecommuting job posting histories in the FlexJobs database during 2016. World Travel Holdings is one of 100 companies that had the highest number of telecommuting job openings on the FlexJobs site in 2016. To be considered for this list, the jobs offered by these companies had to be telecommuting-friendly, either allowing for candidates to telecommute entirely or part of the time.

"Ten years ago we began transitioning to become a predominantly work-at-home company to allow us to recruit top talent for our travel agent positions, and since then we have retained many valuable employees by providing them the flexibility to work from home," said Loren Kennedy, vice president of Human Resources for World Travel Holdings. "Our vision is to broaden horizons both for our team and for our customers. We strive to create a very engaged workplace since more than 80 percent of our employee base works from home and we want everyone to feel part of something bigger. This satisfaction translates to a positive customer experience and ultimately can be attributed to why we are a powerhouse in the travel industry."

In the past, World Travel Holdings has hired for jobs with telecommuting options such as Travel Professional, Customer Care Representative and Business Development Manager and has been recognized as a leader in the industry in virtually recruiting, hiring and training more than 330 employees annually.

There has been notable growth in telecommuting in recent years and the movement toward a more remote and mobile workforce is growing stronger. Continued advances in mobile and cloud workplace technologies, the workforce dominance of tech-savvy Millennials, and the financial, health, and work-life balance benefits that remote work offers both employers and workers are driving this trend. Sixty-eight percent of U.S. workers say, in the future, they expect to work remotely instead of commute to an office every day.

"The results of this year's list are in line with the overall growth trends we're observing in the flexible job marketplace, with increasingly diverse companies turning to the TRaD' (or telecommuting, remote, and distributed) model of work as an integrated business practice," said Sara Sutton Fell, founder and CEO of FlexJobs. "From an even broader perspective, more people are now professionally engaged in the knowledge economy, which naturally supports jobs that can be done from home. And as more companies embrace remote work in meaningful ways, more people will have greater access to broader career and employment opportunities, creating a positive ripple effect on our economy."

‘Economical stem cell treatment will revolutionise medicine’ – The Hindu

Cost-effective stem cell treatment has to be the next revolution to transform personalised treatment of patients, said Hunterian Professorship Awardee A.A.Shetty. Speaking at a felicitation function, Dr. Shetty said there is a need to create awareness about stem cells and patient-specific treatment specifically designed for individuals.

It is going to be simple, with minimal complications. Our role is to make it cost effective. Once it happens, it will revolutionise treatment, said Dr. Shetty.

Surgery using stem cell technology is developing at a rapid pace and the role of stem cell therapy in Orthopaedics is gaining importance, said Trauma and Orthopaedic Speciality Hospital (TOSH) Managing Director S.H. Jaheer Hussain. The ability of stem cells to transform into bone and cartilage has given a new dimension in the treatment of osteoarthritis, fracture non union, ligament tears. Stem cells have shown significant clinical results in osteoarthritis and cartilage defects. Recent advances in stem cells centrifuging techniques have lead to the introduction of the new concept of single- stage knee cartilage regeneration.

OPINION Where will studies fall in the Trump administrations line of immediacy? by Sean Sequeira | Feb 09 2017 | 17 hours ago | Updated 17 hours ago

As President Trumps cabinet ossifies into its final form, several Americans predict that many policy consistencies of the past are now at risk. One place of consistency is the landscape of stem cell research. The impacts Trumps administration might have on biomedical science are still uncertain. Indeed, some cabinet appointments have incited fear in Americans who rely on stem cell therapy or perform research or work at institutions where stem cell research is a vital component of grants and general revenue. While uniformly and staunchly conservative, the Trump administration must ensure continuity within stem cell research not only to protect jobs and research institutions from bankruptcy, but to also preserve a therapy that might actually be a panacea for a range of maladies.

Stem cells, while controversial and ethically precarious to the public, should be researched and ultimately implemented as a therapeutic solution for patients that simply have no alternative. Specifically, stem cells opponents are against embryonic stem cells, which no longer account for the majority of stem cell research. Currently, the majority of stem cell research is made up of induced pluripotent stem cells, somatic cells which can regress to an embryonic state through regenerative and genetic engineering. With the seminal work of Drs. Takahash and Yamanaka, the ethical rigors associated with embryonic stem cells need not be dealt with.

However, the question arises as to why embryonic stem cells are so insatiably invaluable and why they have immense potential to solve the worlds most enigmatic medical maladies. Indeed, after a zygote forms, the subsequent cells follow a pathway based upon environmental and biological cues similar to how a student follows a pathway to become a doctor, lawyer or businessman. Stem cells are categorized according to the broadness of cell they can become embryonic stem cells are the most versatile whereas adult stem cells, like those found in your bone marrow, are comparatively discrete in their differentiation scope. So, with embryonic stem cells, appropriate cues, and research, we could theoretically program these stem cells to become a pancreas, heart, brain or liver cells. On a macroscale, stem cells provide a conduit through which to build full pancreases for diabetic patients or hearts for heart failure patients, from the ground up. Essentially, with stem cells, we can turn the tide in a seemingly perennial battle with virulent pathologies.

Induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, are actually adult somatic cells like those found on your skin which revert back to their embryonic state through transcription factors or proteins necessary to develop or progress the fate or state of a cell to a new state. In this case, the Yamanaka factors are four transcription factors are those necessary to combine with adult somatic cells in order to revert the cells back into embryonic stem cells.

Granted, while the discovery of iPSC was a phenomenal one, there is a long road ahead in order to make them a mainstream therapy and to ensure that they are morphologically, molecularly, and functionally identical to their embryonic counterparts. During the Obama administration, research institutions like the National Institute of Health were not only provided the opportunity to research using stem cells, but were also less impeded than they were during the George W. Bush administration in the quantity and quality of research they were able to undertake.

With the new administration, it has become necessary that they scrap their conservative agenda against stem cells and biomedical research by demonstrating to the public they care and see their constituents as people in need of stem cell research. The administration must recognize the ultimate way to defeat unscrupulous stem cell utilization is to fund research to find novel ways to circumvent such controversy.

Spirituality: Called to be servants, not judges – Elmira Star-Gazette

Norris Burkes Published 1:43 p.m. ET Feb. 9, 2017 | Updated 3 hours ago

Norris Burkes is shown speaking at a 2011 prayer breakfast.(Photo: Provided photo)

Recently, I got an email from Jim Meacham, retired Air Force master sergeant who served 41 years.

Now at 81 years old, hes well into his second wind volunteering for the River Region Chaplain Service in Montgomery, Alabama. He and 14 other volunteer chaplains serve nearly 500 police officers and about 250 sheriff deputies, along with about 450 officers in fire and rescue.

Initially, Jim ran into the same difficulty most new chaplains have serving people of different religions. As a public-safety chaplain, he must follow the same rules I do as a hospice chaplain. We cannot proselytize.

As chaplains, we are tasked to serve all persons while respecting their different beliefs. That includes everyone: Christians, atheists, Islamists, Jews or any other ideology.

Why would that be a problem? you ask. Because we both came from Baptist traditions where proselytizing was part of our beliefs. However, in Jims role as a chaplain, it means that he doesnt pray for an officer, and I as a chaplain dont pray for a patient, unless our prayers are specifically requested.

We follow this rule because, as Jim likes to say, Chaplains are servants, not judges." Nevertheless, well-meaning evangelical folks will still push us to use our position to tell dying people, Jesus is your only hope.

We resist their well-meaning advice and hold fast to the rule of no proselytizing for two reasons. First, wed be fired for violating the rule. But more importantly: A chaplains job is spiritual, not religious.

Whats the difference? you ask.

Spirituality is that sense of awe and wonder we all have about the creation that surrounds us. Its about who we are, how we hope, how we pray and how we love. Spirituality is that piece of ourselves that attracts us to something outside ourselves. It is that basic appetite or search engine we have that seeks our creator.

Religion is one of the destinations to which spirituality often can take us. Destinations can be different for all of us. Spirituality may bring a person to Christianity, but it might also bring a person to Buddhism or Judaism.

Personally, Im not ashamed to say it here, loud and clear, that my spiritual search leads me to the Godthat Jesus came to reveal. My faith is something I recommend to everyone who asks me about the hope I carry within me.

Since Christianity is our chosen religion, Jim and I worship with those who believe as we do. But as chaplains, we seek a more ambitious dialogue with those we serve. We seek a discourse that includes all those people who are made in the image of God.

It is the same kind of cross-cultural dialogue I hope you will explore.

I urge you not to limit yourself to those who only worship a god thats only created in your image. If you do, youre going to miss God in a lot of places. Besides, if you really believe your religion to be relevant, then youll want to test it out among people who believe differently.

Years ago, Jim had a mentor who taught that "if we carry ourselves as God would have us, and let him guide us, we'll be OK." Jim says he still finds that advice to be true.

Recently, a small stroke reduced Jims duty calls, but in the end, he remains, as do I, a chaplain that serves people. We see ourselves not as some kind of apostle or Elmer Gantry evangelist, but someone who is gently nudging, not judging, people toward a relationship with their benevolent creator.

Ladakh, Where Buddhist Spirituality, Culture Reign Supreme – News18

Ladakh -- once the hub of the ancient Silk Route -- is aptly described as a place where Buddhist spirituality and its ancient culture reign supreme amidst virgin nature.

It's a cold desert in northern India, dotted by tiny hamlets spread over the Himalayan peaks adjoining Tibet, where one can simultaneously have a close brush with sunburn and frostbite in summer.

Leh, the headquarters of Ladakh, is connected by road -- open only five months a year due to heavy snowfall -- from Srinagar and the distance of 434 km takes two days with a night halt at Kargil town; and almost equidistant from the picturesque Manali tourist resort in Himachal Pradesh via the picturesque Lahaul Valley. The latter route is more treacherous.

Travelling by air is the most convenient way to reach Leh, available round the year.

"It's a place where spirituality and culture co-exist, where traditional life is thriving by adapting green, modern technologies. It's truly called a crown jewel," remarked British tourist Alfred Martin.

For Malaysia-born Michelle Yeoh, famous for her role in Ang Lee's Oscar-winning martial arts love story "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", visiting the "rooftop of the world" is a spiritual journey. The analogy, however, was not exactly appropriate as the expression "Roof of the World" generally refers to Tibet.

"It's a spiritual journey for me every time. This land of high mountain passes always reminds me of a stronghold of Buddhist art, culture and spirituality and this spirit of purity is rarely seen elsewhere in the world," Yeoh told IANS.

She was in Ladakh earlier this month for the week-long Naropa festival, a once-in-12-year celebration of the birth anniversary of the great Indian saint Naropa, at the famed 17th century Hemis monastery, located 40 km from Leh.

"From July till late October is the best period to explore ancient monasteries and trek to a host of mountain passes," remarked tour operator Sonam Dawa in Leh.

Ladakh reported a tourism boom in 2015, attracting 146,501 visitors, including 19,075 foreigners, up more than 25 percent from the previous year, according to the local administration.

This year, till July, it saw 161,444 tourists and a majority of the foreigners were from Israel, France, Britain and the US.

The entire Ladakh region is populated mainly by tribals. The climatic conditions are harsh as much of the land is a cold desert where the mercury remains below minus 30 degrees Celsius in winter for weeks on end.

The staple food is barley, wheat, peas, rice, rapeseed and salted tea mixed with yak butter.

From the world-acclaimed Hemis monastery to Druk Padma Karpo School, also known as "Rancho's School" after the Aamir Khan character in the film '3 Idiots', these places speak about the unique spirit of Ladakh, from an ancient past to the innovative present.

Built in 1630 by Druk Staktsang Raspa, a student of the fifth Gyalwang Drukpa, the monastery holds the Hemis Festival every year in summer in honour of Guru Padmasambhava, the eight century Indian guru revered for spreading Buddhism in the Himalayas.

The monastery's museum is a repository of an astounding 1,500 artefacts, some dating back 1,400 years.

Just an hour's steep uphill hike from the Hemis Monastery takes you to the Gotsang cave and retreat centre, a spiritual journey.

Chemdrey, one of Ladakh's greatest fortress monasteries, is 45 km from Leh, en route to the picturesque Nubra Valley and the world's highest salt water lake Panggong that freezes in winter.

The statute of Padmasambhava is the most important statue in the Chemdrey monastery.

The Shrey Palace, located 15 km south of Leh, houses a 12-foot statute of Buddha in the temple of Shakyamuni, one of the largest metal statues in Ladakh.

The palace, which boasts of a view of 108 stupas , is owned by a royal family of Ladakh. Monks of the Drukpa lineage are taking care of it.

Adventure and thrills lie west of Leh.

The mighty Indus and Zanskar rivers are popular for whitewater rafting. The place where the blue waters of the Zanskar and the green of the Indus join, some 36 km from Leh, is known for its most beautiful views.

There is also the famous Sikh shrine, Gurdwara Patar Sahib, managed by the Indian Army, 20 km from Leh.

Getting to Leh:

How to travel: In summer, by public or private transport. From Manali to Leh via Keylong; From Srinagar to Leh via Kargil.

Leh is connected by air from Delhi and Jammu.

Where to stay in Leh: Small hotels, guest houses and even homestays with local people. Interestingly, there are no houses left in Leh, only guest houses.

Buddhist leader The Gyalwang Drukpa, the spiritual head of the 1,000-year-old Drukpa Order, is promoting homestays among the locals by adopting eco-friendly ways.

Heighten Spirituality and Inspiration with Essential Oils – Beliefnet

Shutterstock.com

Scientific research has revealed that essential oils possesses myriad beneficial phytochemical properties such as anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anti-stress, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and analgesic, but their ability to influence human potential is far from limited to psychophysiological effects. Aromatic essences have also been used for centuries to create a more meaningful connection with something bigger than ourselves, and, indeed, may place us in a state more receptive to inspiration.

The use of aromatic essences and the burning of incense aromatic resins and gums, such as frankincense and balsam used to create scented fragrances for specific applications was a fundamental part of ancient Egyptian life. Incense was burned as an offering to Egyptian gods and large quantities were burned every day in temples throughout Egypt.

The Bible contains many references to the burning of incense as an integral part of sacred ceremonies, and the precious aromatic botanicals frankincense and myrrh were offered to the Christ child by wise men. More than a dozen aromatic botanicals are referenced in the Old and New Testament books of the Bible, many of which are distilled into essential oils today: aloeswood, calamus, cassia, cinnamon, cistus, cypress, fir, frankincense, galbanum, hyssop, juniper, myrrh, myrtle, onycha, pine, saffron, sandalwood, and spikenard.

"Spirituality is a universal human experience that connects us to or brings us into greater harmony with the present moment..."

Similarly, the ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians, Indians, and Chinese all used aromatic essences for a variety of purposes, including religious rituals. Some religions continue this practice of using aromatic botanicals during religious services, at temples, before household alters, and to purify and protect.

Spirituality is a universal human experience that connects us to or brings us into greater harmony with the present moment, to self, to our fellow man, to nature, or to the divine. Many find that spirituality is intricately associated with religion, while others consider it a separate and broader concept associated with emotions, behavior, emotions, and philosophies that involves search for transcendent meaning. Beyond the religious aspects of spirituality, it involves the ability to discover meaning and purpose in life, moral and ethical principles to abide by, and a deep relationship with something bigger than ones self.

Essential oils are volatile molecules obtained from the seeds, leaves, bark, resins, and other materials of natures most generous botanicals. They have been used to support optimum wellness and enhance human potential for hundreds of years. One of the most remarkable aspects of essential oils is their ability to simultaneously influence ones physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. In this way, essential oils are uniquely qualified to produce dramatic results that other remedies can only dream of.

Some choose to use essential oils to open the mind and enhance spiritual connections and inspiration. They do so by inhaling an essential oil while meditating or direct application of essential oils to the body (i.e. the crown of the head, base of the skull, or over the heart).

Pioneering researchers are beginning to unlock the powerful influence the aromas of essential oils have on brainwave activity. Increasing theta brainwave activity is a preferred state for meditation because it heightens receptiveness and provides access to knowledge and information that is normally beyond conscious awareness. According to a study published in the May 2011 edition of Flavour and Fragrance Journal, inhalation of Siberian fir needle essential oil for 40 minutes promoted a more relaxed state and increased theta brainwaves. Other essential oils that remarkably influence brainwave activity include frankincense, balsam fir, copaiba, and lavender essential oils.

In another way, essential oils may indirectly improve spirituality by removing obstructions that hinder its full potential. For example, negative emotions have the potential to harm spirituality. Essential oils release molecules into the air that interact with the nervous and endocrine systems in such a way to dramatically alter the release of hormones and neurotransmitters involved in mood, memory, emotions, and cognition. Some of the chemicals and hormones key to spirituality include (essential oils that influence their levels according to research are listed in parenthesis):

Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect of Eucharistic adoration? – Aleteia EN

When a person adores Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, that person and his surroundings change. When a perpetual adoration chapel opens, it slowly transforms the neighborhood. This is what Isabel Puig calls the butterfly effect (from the theory that the smallest movement of a butterflys wings in one part of the world can have a powerful effect on wind and weather patterns thousands of miles away).

Isabel Puig is a mother of a large family and helps to coordinate hourly turns at a Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapel in Badalona (near Barcelona, Spain). She is also currently working with others to open another perpetual adoration chapel in Barcelona, at the Royal Monastery of Santa Isabel, where the Regnum Christi movement houses a scholastic center.

The Lord acts in the neighborhood, in souls, in the whole environment, Isabel told the Spanish online publication, Religin en Libertad, as she recalled how, at the chapel inBadalona, people find peace.

Adorers find greaterpeace and serenity to face life, and the wounds of their hearts find healing by going to see Jesus.

If the adorers are doing better, all of their surroundings are affected, she noted. You notice it at home, in families. When people have their priorities straight, this has an immediate effect on their friends, and we are better able to help those around us.

The change happens slowly but surely, forthe presence of the Lord works marvels. We have seen people change their lives radically based on that hour of adoration, Isabel confessed.

People with addictions, with serious family problems who find support by leaning on the Lord for that hour. Also couples in difficulty one spouse comes or both come together. People find healing especially for ailments of the soul. You can see how they develop and evolve as they learn acceptance. There is a lot of joy among the adorers, a deep and profound joy.

Isabel says that many people who arent practicing also come to the Eucharistic Adoration chapel in Badalona, because there they find peace, silence and a welcoming space, and they end up developing a regular and assiduous prayer life.

Some adorers confess that, although they dont go regularly to Mass, they do come regularly to be in the Lords presence. Something tells them to return each week. Its a space of total freedom.

One example of this butterfly effect can be seen in Ciudad Jurez, where Eucharistic Adoration has contributed to a decrease in the number of homicides from 3,766 in 2010, to 265 in 2015, says Fr. Patricio Hileman, a priest who is dedicated to establishing adoration chapels throughout Latin America. Experience has shown Fr. Hileman that when a parish adores God day and night the city is transformed.

Social Chaos: Where's the Faith?

by Rev. Dan Koeshall

istock

As a progressive Christian, I believe there are many names for God and many ways to a loving God; this article reflects one of those ways. Take from here what works for you. Celebrate life with joy and peace!

This is the fourth and final agreement based on Don Miguel Ruizs book of practical wisdom called, The Four Agreements. These are powerful, life-changing agreements and they are as powerful as we let them be in our lives.

Always do your best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Always do your best sure rolls off our tongues easily, right? It almost seems too simple, too easy.

When we hear the advice to always do your best, maybe we hear the give it your 110 percent pep talk. Doing your best for some may seem to suggest constantly over-achieving, going above and beyond, gotta be the best, exceeding a really high standard of excellence and maintaining it, and not letting anything or anyone get in the way of you reaching your goals! Oh my!

Or, maybe doing your best might be an admonishment to the underdog whos about to get clobbered in a sporting event, or to someone whos not prepared to take a test, or going into any situation where failure is more or less expected; just do your best sometimes sounds like oh well!

But this fourth agreement isnt about such extreme thinking. Always do your best is about choosing to take action first and foremost, not for a result, but because there is value in taking the action in the first place.

Don Miguel Ruiz says, Doing your best is taking an action because you love it, not because youre expecting a reward. Most people do exactly the opposite; they only take action when they expect a reward, and they dont enjoy the action for example, most people go to work every day just thinking of payday, and the money they will get from the work they are doing. They are working for the reward, and as a result they resist work. They try to avoid the action and it becomes more difficult, and they end up not doing their best. They work all week long, suffering through the work, suffering the action, not because they like to work, but because they feel they have to.

Anytime we do something, including incorporating these four agreements in our lives, if we do it expecting a particular outcome, were not as likely to actually be doing our best because were so focused on what hasnt happened yet. Stay with me here; instead of being fully present and engaged in the present moment we are looking for some kind of imagined result or outcome.

Don Miguel Ruiz uses the illustration of Forrest Gump as the model for what he means by doing ones best. Forrest wasnt very smart, wasnt very goal-oriented, but everything he did, ping pong, serving in Vietnam, mowing the lawn, running, playing football, he simply did the best he could, and he was so present in the doing of the task that good and beautiful things always seemed to follow him.

So then, why would we want to do our best if its not for a certain result or reward? Im glad you asked!

As we do our best, we are fully living in each moment; we are not somewhere dreaming in the future, we are not somewhere in the past, we are in the present moment.

So, as we do our best in each present moment, and the result is not what we wanted, we still arent filled with regret and sadness. Why? Because we know we simply did our best. And as were not attached to certain outcomes, the next time we could go even beyond what we had hoped or dreamed.

Rev. J. B. Lee says, Doing our best in the present, releases us from remorse and sorrow about the past, and from thirsting for some reward in the future.

Don Miguel Ruiz would say that we do our best because when we do, we are fully engaging life, we are actually living it, instead of just going through the motions, or maybe silently suffering through it. When we change our thinking about doing our best from an obligation (I have to) to an opportunity (I get to), we can learn to love anything and everything were doing.

This fourth agreement to always do your best is a way to be content in every moment.

And when we are free from worrying about results or rewards, it will help us with the other three agreements. As Don Miguel Ruiz writes, The first three agreements will only work if you do your best. Dont expect that you will always be able to be impeccable with your word. But, you can do your best.

Dont expect that you will never take anything personally; just do your best.

Dont expect that youll never make another assumption, but you can certainly do your best.

By doing your best, the habits of misusing your words, taking things personally, and making assumptions will become weaker and less frequent with time. You dont need to judge yourself, feel guilty, or punish yourself even if you still make assumptions, still take things personally, and still are not impeccable with your word. Be kind to yourself! Love yourself!

Angelos & Barry, comedy review: A ramshackle hour of quirky laughs – Evening Standard

There are double acts and then there is Angelos and Barry, who take the two-hander concept in bizarre directions in this smutty, nutty onstage spin-off of the fictional duos podcast.

Barry from Watford is a wheezy 82-year-old who is trying to persuade the nation to join his new power generation and find spiritual enlightenment. Angelos Epithemiou, best known as the scruffy scorekeeper from Shooting Stars, is currently his only disciple. Not surprising as this deluded geriatric guru has a habit of half-masting his trousers to scratch his psoriasis.

It takes time to tune into their wavelength, but if you succeed there is plenty to relish here. The nearest comparison is probably early Little Britain, before Lucas and Walliams sandpapered away their rough edges.

The most accessible moments are when these mismatched misfits wryly reference old school humour, channeling Kenneth Williams or delivering oddly sentimental vaudevillian ditties. There is also some risky audience participation trying to find a date for unlikely sex addict Angelos which hit paydirt on press night.

Full credit to seasoned performers Dan Renton Skinner (Angelos) and Alex Lowe (Barry) who leave their dignity at the door and make their fetid creations strangely believable. You may not want to sign up to their cult but if you like your laughs on the quirky side you may enjoy an hour in their ramshackle company.
