Plotting ‘No-Place’ in ‘Utopia Neighborhood Club’ – Seattle Weekly

A student-curated exhibition at Jacob Lawrence Gallery envisions political grandiosity.

If life-negating political structures are the result of the suppression of imagination, utopias are visions as pushback. At the University of Washingtons Jacob Lawrence Gallery (The Jake), three new curators, Nadia Ahmed, Sarah Faulk, and Anqi Peng, with support from former director Scott Lawrimore and project assistant Justen Waterhouse, have organized an exhibition series on the conceptions and present-day stakes of utopia. On the 100th anniversary of Jacob Lawrences birth, Utopia Neighborhood Club contextualizes utopia within his life. Faulk states, My hope for the relationship between utopia and the institution this show is happening within is that it can foster a community that encourages imagining radical futures.

Utopia is literally nowhere; the word comes from the Greek roots not and place. Often an ideal against which we compare current reality, utopias imagine societal overhauls into structures where the subjects lives are easier. They are fantastical, such as an island nation where queer women live free from men (but with giant kangaroos) in William Moultons Themyscira, or an alternate reality in which native populations in the Congo had learned about steam technology before Belgiums colonization, as imagined in Seattle author Nisi Shawls Everfair. Utopia as a political premise asks us to imagine something radically outside what we know, like universal basic income and prison abolition, and from there sets direction for programmatic goals. Utopias are multifarious, simultaneous, and even contradictory. When Thomas More wrote Utopia almost exactly 500 years ago, reducing the workday to nine hours was one of his farfetched visions.

Shelter-wear prototypes. Tad Hirsch and Mae Boettcher. Photo Courtesy of Jacob Lawrence Gallery.

Utopias are completely relative, Ahmed tells me. Everyone envisions something different for a perfect world. The exhibition series and public programs demonstrate this expansiveness of perspectives. The first iteration of the series exhibited Tad Hirsch and Mae Boettchers shelter-wear prototypes for homeless people, a versatile poncho formed from Tyvek construction material, which suggested the role of the artist in an idealized society as that of social interventionist. In contrast, Zhi Lins quotidian drawings of a kitchen and bedroom during Chinas Cultural Revolution demonstrated the artists preferred embrace of art for arts sake, to stay away from the intervention of the communist government.

How might Jacob Lawrences life inform our understanding of utopia? With a large exhibition at Seattle Art Museum, his profound impact on this city is experiencing a surge of recognition. Lawrence is celebrated for his depictions of 20th-century black Southern life, specifically for his documentation of the Great Migration, the relocation of more than six million black Americans from the South to the industrial North between the late 1910s and the 1970s. As LadiSasha Jones writes in Temporary Art Review, If we can understand the Great Migration at the turn of the 20th century as a radical spatial imaginary, through this lens, the Black city can be framed as an active collective imagining of utopia. During that era, the many arms of racism were still being flexed via brazen laws such as restrictive housing covenants. In response, Jones writes, Organized networks sprang up all across expanding Black urban enclaves and became a part of the fabric of Black survival and ascension in the city.

It was at Utopia House in Harlem, a community center started by three black women, that young Lawrence took painting classes. Building a utopia involves rearranging social codes to either change laws or sidestep them, and this art club, where Lawrence laid the foundation for his training, was one example of the many outerworlds within the country built for and by black people.

Jacob Lawrence (second from left), Harlem, 1933-34. Photograph by Kenneth F. Space. National Archives, Harmon Foundation, College Park, Maryland

In early 2016, Lawrimore brought in as the Jake Legacy Artist-in-Residence artist Steffani Jemison, whose work is inspired by Utopia House; her show Promise Machine, Jones writes, utilizes utopia as a discourse of abstraction within Lawrences work and a century of imagining the Black city. Jemison drew the connection between Lawrences work and the utopian impulse in collective migration and community network-building: within her project, Jemison created reading groups around books such as Black Utopia: Negro Communal Experiments in America by William Pease, Black Empire by George Schuyler, and Light Ahead for the Negro by Edward A. Johnson.

On the Utopia Neighborhood Club website, a quote from cultural critic Stephen Duncombe reads Utopia is No-Place, and therefore it is left up to all of us to find it. It is clear that the curators placed emphasis on all of us. Public programs pack the exhibition series calendar, such as multiple forums on the meanings of neighborhood and club; How to Organize a Public Library with Professor Michael Swaine; and a workshop on DIY Venue Harm Reduction with architect and curator S. Surface. The exhibition series ends with works by Lawrence, including The Legend of John Brown, a 22-part serigraph series depicting the life and contribution of the important abolitionist, and features a gallery talk by Royal Alley-Barnes, former executive director of Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute and Jacob Lawrences first graduate student.

Utopianism may seem naive as we question the viability of creating societies separate from the ones weve already clumped together with the bulky shrapnel of history. In recent decades techno-utopianists have dominated the discourse with their zealous belief that technology could bring forth a just society, promising that we can invent our way out of our social problems and that new-media technologies and the Internet contain portals to non-hierarchal cybersocieties. As weve seen this pipe dream rust and corrode, its spirit persists in political partnerships, product marketing, and even art exhibitions that promise disruption of the status quo through invention-solutions.

Nadia Ahmed states her hope that many students outside of the art program will join the conversation: People do not take enough advantage of the Gallery, which is why we wanted to ask what people want from it. What could The Jake become to make itself a more accessible space? This receptiveness to input, instead of a patronizing assertion of solutions, is the first step toward collective accountability.

Im struck by the relationship between the utopian no-place and no-place as a geographic negation, a term for an absence of a national identity by law or faith. There are those with no place in America: the fugitive, the refugee, the immigrant; for these, no-place is the purgatory state of inhabiting a country that has denied your legal stake in it. Utopian thinking carries varying weight depending on whether you believed you ever had a country to lose. When no inhabitable places are in sight, devising new social orders is less an indulgent fantasy exercise than a means of survival.

In America 2017, these ideas are highly relevant. How will Jacob Lawrence Gallery continue to account for the utopian tradition of Lawrences life after this exhibition is over? How can the rich trajectory of utopian thought extend our capacities for imagining and acting beyond what we have known to be possible?

Its useful for me to think of a utopian mindset as one committed to hope, creating new possibilities, and new landscapes, Sarah Faulk says, but with the knowledge an end is probably never going to be in sight. The work never ends. A Student Response Part II The Jake Legacy Residency and The Legend of John Brown + Other Works, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, 1915 N.E. Chelan Lane, jacoblawrencegallery.hotglue.me. Through Sat., March 4. Gallery Talk with Royal Alley-Barnes, 10 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 15.

New shark of the Caribbean – Deutsche Welle

The Fisheries Department of Belize and researchers with the Florida International University (FIU) registered their discovery of a previously unknown species of Sphyrna or hammerhead shark this week.

They say its range is relatively small and that it needs clean waters to survive, which is indicative of the health of the 300 kilometer long Belize Barrier reef -the longest in the northern hemisphere - where it was found.

Philipp Kanstinger, marine conservation expert with WWF Germany says the find underscores the importance of the reef as a biodiversity hotspot, and signals the need for action.

"The WWF is working with other partners to ensure this valuable location will be preserved in the future," he said in a press release.

The organization isalso calling on the government of Belizeto be actively involved in protectingthe marine paradise, which is home to more than 500 species of fish, over 100 types of coral as well as a rich diversity of flora.

Sharks, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and the American marine crocodileare also among the wildlife known to swim in those parts.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, the reef is comprised of seven marine protected areas. But the ecosystem has come under threat in recent years as thousands of hectares of mangrove forest have been destroyed in the name of coastal and industrial development. In 2009, the destruction prompted UNESCO to put the site on its endangered list.

Blame it on Jaws or blame it on the fact that sharks do have rather a lot of sharp teeth, fact is, many humans have a fear of sharks as deep as the waters in which they swim. Any expert will tell you, we kill by far more of these great fish a year than they do us. So should we really be scared?

There are five species of reef shark, of which this is one. Feasting on crustaceans and fish alike, they are the top predator in the fragile ecosystem from which they take their name. They are no strangers to divers either, and have been known to attack when they feel threatened.

There are more than 250 recorded species of shark in the waters around our planet. They range in size and ferocity. The sand tiger shark weighs up to 159 kilos and can reach a length of 3.2 meters. They are big eaters, have a mouth full of frightening looking teeth, but are generally regarded as being docile and unlikely to attack humans unless provoked to do so.

Though it is impossible to know exactly how many sharks are killed annually for their fins, some estimates put the number around 100 million. Finning, as the practice is known, entails the removal of the fin while the shark is alive. The animals are then cast back into the sea where if not dead already, they succumb to a painful end. The fins are used to make soup, which costs up to $100 a bowl.

Recent research revealed that Greenland sharks can live to the extraordinarily ripe old age of 400. These predators have a healthy appetite, but have never been known to go for humans. They like cold waters, through which they move slowly. And that is not the only thing they do at a leisurly pace - they don't even reach sexual maturity until they are around 150.

...it will hurt you. At 18 meters, whale sharks are the longest species in the family, and indeed the biggest fish in the sea. At that rate, dinner should be theirs for the picking, but their penchant is for plankton. Good news for all the other creatures in the sea. But whale sharks are at risk. Not only are they fished for their fins, oil and meat, but are often hit by eco-tourism boats.

Said to be the best researched sharks, the lemon species is considered non-agressive. To date there have been no recorded incidents of a human fatality as a result of a lemon shark attack. They are social creatures that move in groups, where they rarely display aggressive behavior to each other.

2000 Royal Caribbean passengers stranded after ship fails life jacket inspection – Fox News

Over 2,000 passengers who thought they'd be sailing to the Bahamas this week were unexpectedly delayed at port after a Royal Caribbean cruise ship failed an annual Coast Guard safety inspection Monday.

The Majesty of the Seas was scheduled departure from Port Canaveral, Fla. late Monday but Coast Guard officialsordered the liner to remain docked on Valentines Day after inspectors found multiple safety infractions, including the vessels life preservers that were showing their age, according toFlorida Today.

"Yesterday, the U.S. Inspectors found 'multiple' safety concerns involving the ship's lifesaving equipment for its 2,700 passengers and 800 crew members, officials reported. Ultimately, they failed the inspection, Royal Caribbean said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Over 2,000 passengers and 800 crew members are currently aboard the 13-deck vessel that has now been stuck at the port for over 24 hours. The ship was set to depart for a four-night excursion through the Bahamas, CocoCay and Nassau.

The ships major mechanical components, such as the engine and the hull, passed the inspection.

New life jackets are expected to arrive on the ship Tuesday, at which point the Majesty of the Seas must undergo another inspection to be cleared for sailing.

Royal Caribbean is keeping the docked passengers entertained with food, shopping and shows onboard the static ship.

Still, several passengers who thought they'd be enjoying a romantic Valentine's Day trip have taken to social media to express their frustration with the line.

Jonathan Galed reached out to the cruise line via Twitter seeking more information on the delay.

Hey @RoyalCaribbean thanks for turning my Caribbean vacation into a docked shipyard stay, says Whitney Linn on Twitter.

Others remain optimistic. Chill out @RoyalCaribbean #majestyoftheseas passengers. There are worse places to be "stranded" & you're aboard a floating city of fun! posted Erica Bourdage.

A representative for Royal Caribbean Cruises was not immediately available for comment.

Caribbean-style lagoon coming to Houston-area development

A northeast Houston subdivision will build a 1.5-acre artificial lagoon and sandy beach tailored to look like a Caribbean seashore thanks to patented technology from the Florida-based designer.

The project in Balmoral, a community in the works near Atascocita in northeast Houston, will probably be the second such lagoon in Texas; another in Dallas is expected to open sooner.

The technology comes from Florida-based U.S. Crystal Lagoons Corp, the U.S. arm of the company that built the world's largest swimming pool inSharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, in 2015.

RELATED:Marriott Marquis Houston debuts Texas-shaped pool in grand opening

The shimmering clear water is produced by a proprietary technology for sonic water filtration, which Man said differs from conventional pool technology and uses 50 percent less water than a park of the same size. He said the lagoons uses a fraction of the chemicals of a conventional swimming pool, and sport 400 sensors measuring water parameters in real time.

At Balmoral, lagoon construction is expected to begin by late summer or early fall, and open to swimmers in summer 2018, said Jeff Sheenan, director of community affairs and amenity development for Land Tejas.

Home construction will start in late April or early May of this year, and people are expected to start moving into finished houses in the third quarter. When the project is completely built out, within 10 to 12 years, it will have 1,700 home sites, the developers said.

Belize among the Caribbean countries recording strongest tourism growth – Amandala

BELIZE CITY, Fri. Feb. 10, 2017 - The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) yesterday unveiled its report on the performance of the tourism sector across the Caribbean for 2016. The report said that while only 48% of the reporting destinations registered growth during the year, with the best performances occurring in the Dominican Republic, the British Virgin Islands and Grenada, which all grew by double digits, Belize became the 8th destination to record over one million cruise passenger visits that year.

The report added that Belize was actually one of 7 Caribbean destinations which recorded double digit increases within their reporting periods. The other countries in the group are the Turks & Caicos Islands, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada and Montserrat.

Caribbean tourism continues to break new ground, surpassing 29 million arrivals for the first time in our history, and once again we have grown faster than the global average, said Hugh Riley, CTO Secretary General.

The CTO reported that total visitor expenditure is estimated to have increased by approximately 3.5% to reach US$35.5 billion. Despite political uncertainties, security and economic challenges in our main source markets, tourist arrivals to the Caribbean increased by 4.2 per cent in 2016, better than the 3.9 per cent overall internationally, Riley said.

As is the case for Belize, the United States continued to be the Caribbeans primary long-stay market, increasing by three-and-a-half per cent and providing just about half of all arrivals, Riley added.

In dissecting the 2016 numbers, CTOs Acting Director of Research, Ryan Skeete, said: 2016 marked another record-setting year as for the first time in our history we received over 29 million arrivals. This is also the 7th consecutive year of growth and our estimated 4.2% increase in tourism trips is the 3rd consecutive year above the global growth rate.

A month ago the Belize Tourism Board reported that Belize was boasting its highest level of overnight arrivals in 20 years with a growth of 13%. Meanwhile, cruise tourist arrivals grew by 4.9% to over a million tourists.

The contributing factors to these performances included greater air access from the source markets to the region and the realization of significant investments to enhance infrastructure (airport redevelopment) and product (hotels), the CTO information said.

The report said that, 2016 was also a record-breaking year for Caribbean cruising, as cruise passenger arrivals to the region grew by about 1.3% to reach 26.3 million, in line with expectations at the beginning of 2016.

The CTO said that the forecast is for tourist arrivals in the Caribbean to grow at a slower rate of between 2.5 and 3.5% in 2017.

Intoxicating natural vistas, deserted beaches, long dormant volcanoes, and the legacy of a once thriving sugar industry defines the landscape of Nevis; an off the beaten path Caribbean destination thats making a name for itself as the place to be seen.

wanderlusters.com

Boasting a unique island charm that sets it apart from the regions established vacation haunts such as Barbados and St Barts, Nevis is unspoilt, relaxed, and easy-going. Here wide open spaces and a rich cultural heritage implore visitors to ditch the clichd holiday itinerary of all-inclusive sea, sand, and sun, and instead immerse themselves in the real Caribbean.

Without a single traffic light nor even a hint of rush hour madness (unless you count the donkeys and goats that wander rouge along the asphalt), Nevis population of just over 12,000 live by the mantra Rush Slowly; nothing is hurried is here. Yet despite its apparent equable appeal, Nevis offers far more than your average island escape.

Inspired? Heres my insiders guide to Nevis.

Crowds flock to the warmth of the Caribbean during the frigid winter months (November through March), and while you won't necessarily encounter hordes of visitors on Nevis throughout this peak season, take note that the cost of accommodation, car rentals, and some activities will increase during this time.

The festive season and the month of February are the busiest times on the island, however the shoulder season (late April through early June) offers the best of both worlds. Prices drop and the snow birds disperse affording the flexible traveler a reduced rate and a quiet escape.

Flights from five major US cities make connections in either San Juan or St. Maarten with airlines Cape Air, Seaborne, Tradewind, or Winair for arrival into Nevis. Alternatively, there are four direct routes from major US cities to St. Kitts where water taxis deliver passengers across the narrows to Nevis.

Keen to immerse yourself in the islands heritage? Check into The Hermitage. A colonial manor house surrounded by traditional chattel houses the hotels Greathouse is one of the oldest in the Caribbean and exudes a timeless charm.

At this Balinese inspired property lavish two, three, and four bedroom villas overlook the Caribbean Sea. A butler, concierge, private chef, and wellness professionals are on hand to attend to your every whim, and when youre so inclined you can stretch out on the pristine sands that fringe the resort.

Looking for a laid-back, eco-friendly retreat? Check into the Oualie Beach Resort. Owned by the Yearwood family whose heritage runs deep in the sugar trade of the 1600s, the property boasts quaint gingerbread cottages and is set aside a lush beachscape blanketed in coconut palms.

Feeling adventurous? Hike the majestic 3232ft Nevis Peak. Perfect for all levels of climbers, though with a few challenging and adventurous sections, those who reach the top will be rewarded with unparalleled views that stretch out across the Caribbean Sea.

Seen the sights and keen to relax? A skippered sail aboard a yacht is the perfect remedy for any ailment. Book a days sailing with Nevis Yacht Charters who will whisk you away for a few hours on the ocean; snorkel on vibrant coral reefs, relax on the deck in the sun, and see the mighty Mount Nevis in all its glory, clouds blanketing its peak.

Sunshines Beach Bar & Grill has a chilled West Indian ambiance and is popular not only with locals, but visitors and famous faces alike; Beyonce, John Travolta, Kevin Bacon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mel Gibson have all dined here over the last 24 years.

Want to relax aside the sand in style? Head to my favorite hangout the Chrishi Beach Club. The only place to be seen on Nevis, rock up to this ocean-front haunt any time of the day or night and unwind to the sound of Heddas unique playlists that perfectly complement the stylish interiors of this up-scale beach bar.

Currency - Eastern Caribbean Dollars

Transport - Travelers are required to obtain a visitors drivers license, which may be obtained from the Traffic Department or the Fire Station in the islands capital Charlestown for a small fee (take along your passport and a valid international license).

- Nudism and topless sunbathing are illegal.

- Minimum driving age is 18 years old.

- Minimum drinking age is 18 years old.

- Drink driving is illegal on Nevis and those found guilty can be fined and/or jailed for up to 12 months.

Search called off for Georgia man who went overboard in Bahamas – 11alive.com

Search underway for cruise ship passenger

Tim Darnell , WXIA 6:36 AM. EST February 15, 2017

MIAMI, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard has called off their search for a Georgia man who reportedly went overboard Monday from a Carnival cruise ship.

The search was suspended on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.

Kevin Wellons, 24, of Warner Robins went overboard from the Carnival Elation cruise ship about 15 miles southwest of Abaco, Bahamas.

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew deployed to Great Inagua and HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crews from Air Station Miami covered more than 1,381 square miles over nine hours searching for Robins.

Watch standers with the Coast Guard Seventh District Command Center received notification at approximately 11 a.m. Monday from the Carnival Elation cruise ship that Wellons was reportedly seen going overboard from the 11th deck on the ship's closed circuit television.

The cruise ship was transiting from Jacksonville to their first port of call in Nassau, Bahamas.

Wellons and his wife were taking part of a five-day Bahamas cruise that docked on Saturday.

His wife didn't report him missing until they arrived in Nassau, Bahamas around 8:30 a.m., saying he was last seen six hours earlier (around 2:30 a.m.)

After looking at surveillance video, authorities believe Wellons went overboard around 2:45 a.m.

OPEC Report: Pressure On Offshore Drilling Remains – Seeking Alpha

I was reading the latest OPEC report with great interest, in part because oil (NYSEARCA:USO) is a major determinant for many asset classes, and in part because oil price is a key factor for the industry of my special interest, offshore drilling. The news of an OPEC/non-OPEC deal has surely provided significant support for the oil market, but now oil will have to trade on facts rather than assumptions. The first fact check is neutral to slightly bearish, in my view.

OPEC producers generally followed their quota. They knew they should do it after they created so much fuss about the deal - otherwise, oil would be way below $50 per barrel. However, since it's winter in the Middle East, the real test of the OPEC members' dedication to the deal has not started.

OPEC's own view on the demand/supply balance in 2017 is probably more problematic than the challenge of switching air conditioning on in spring in the Middle East states. The cartel estimates that oil demand in 2016 was 94.62 mb/d and that it will rise to 95.81 mb/d in 2017. Whether demand will indeed be this strong is not as important because supply is a crucial factor. OPEC estimates that world oil supply in January fell by 1.29 mb/d to 95.82 mb/d. However, OPEC's estimate of demand is lower than that of IEA.

IEA believes that the current supply/demand situation implies a 0.6 mb/d draw from OECD inventories. As per latest OPEC report, OECD inventories were 299 mb/d above the five-year average. Thus, it would take 498 days to bring them back to normal.

In my view, this is the reason why Brent oil (NYSEARCA:BNO) consistently fails to go past $57.50 per barrel. Even if the current supply/demand balance causes decline in inventories, the pace is too slow. The inventory overhang will continue to plague the market for months if the current situation persists. The key question here is whether the increase in demand will outpace the increase in supply from the countries that are not part of the deal.

Should the balance remain in place, OPEC countries will lose their market share and have more incentive to cheat or abandon the deal. Another reason for concern is that speculative long positions are at very high levels:

This is a recipe for major downside if the fundamental data does not support the long thesis. I would like to highlight that this level of speculative activity was reached without additional upside in oil. Thus, the cumulative speculative buyer was met by a fundamental seller - most likely represented by mass hedging of oil producers.

In my view, significant uncertainty remains in the market. The longer Brent oil spends below $57.50, the bigger chances for a domino effect once it breaks below $53. Given the chance to hedge, the situation looks normal for oil producers, but much less so for services companies, especially offshore drillers, which will continue to experience low levels of contracting activity. Current data is not good enough for a major bull thesis. Thus, oil companies remain in a defensive mode, preferring short-cycle opportunities.

This year, we will see a divergence between the "survival group" - Rowan (NYSE:RDC), Diamond Offshore Drilling (NYSE:DO), Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Ensco (NYSE:ESV), and Noble Corp. (NYSE:NE) - and the restructuring group - Seadrill (NYSE:SDRL), Ocean Rig (NASDAQ:ORIG), Pacific Drilling (NYSE:PACD), and North Atlantic Drilling (NYSE:NADL). Seadrill Partners (NYSE:SDLP), which should get confirmation that it is not part of Seadrill restructuring, and Atwood Oceanics (NYSE:ATW), whose debt is not big but whose backlog is a major problem, lie somewhere in between the two groups.

The year 2017 will be very difficult fundamentally even for the "survival group." From oil majors' plans to the cartel's report - everything points to continued pressure on the offshore drilling market due to low oil prices and general uncertainty on the future price levels.

Ithaca organization encourages people to participate in National Random Acts of Kindness Week – The Ithaca Voice

YOUR LOCAL NEWS IS MADE POSSIBLE BY SUPPORT FROM

The following is a republished press release from the Child Development Council and NOT written by The Ithaca Voice. To submit community announcements directly to The Voice, email [emailprotected]

ITHACA, N.Y. -- In honor of its 50th Year Anniversary, the Child Development Council (1967-2017), which serves Cortland and Tompkins Counties, will unveil a series of celebratory programs and events designed to entertain, engage, educate, and appreciate the children, families, and communities it serves. One such program launches next week and will run throughout 2017. That program is Random (and International) Acts of Kindness Year, which piggybacks on the theme of National Random Acts of Kindness Week, that occurs annually in February.

The Councils new campaign will be an ongoing collaboration with Mamas Comfort Camp and its Founder Yael Saar.

Child Development Council CEO, Sue Dale-Hall, states, Our children have no political parties, no ability to vote, and yet they are often in the middle of political rancor and unease. Now, more than ever, its important that we support children by promoting and demonstrating kindness at every level in our lives (at work, at home, in childcare and in the communities we all live in and serve.

Thats why the Child Development Council Board of Directors and staff, along with Mamas Comfort Camp, encourages friends, neighbors, providers, and caregivers to support both random and intentional acts of kindness throughout their workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities throughout the year, particularly how we treat one another and of course, children.

What YOU Can Do: Promote Kindness & Interview Children

The Council encourages workplaces, child care providers, caregivers, neighbors and community members to promote and support random (and intentional) acts of kindness this month and throughout the year. This would involve kindness to one another as adults and to, of course, the children we may interact with each day.

The Council also asks that you capture the VOICES of children. Please record children responding (with permission from caregivers and families naturally!) to the following questions:

1. What does kindness mean to you?

2. How can adults make the world a kinder place?

Videos from smartphones or other devices can be uploaded to the Facebook Random and Intentional Acts of Kindness Page: located here: fb.me/kindnessforkids

The Council has a Pinterest Page with resources on kindness and early childhood education here: https://www.pinterest.com/childdev2017/

The National Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website is located here: https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/

RAK Week, which will be observed Feb. 12-18, 2017, is an annual opportunity to unite through kindness. Formally recognized in 1995, this seven-day celebration demonstrates that kindness is contagious. It all starts with one act one smile, one coffee for a stranger, one favor for a friend. Its an opportunity for participants to leave the world better than they found it and inspire others to do the same. Since inception, RAK estimates that millions of celebrities, businesses, schools, and partners have participated in these weeklong celebrations.

Demonstrating kindness is linked to decreasing stress, improving mood, health, and over wellbeing in children and adults.

David Littlewood, guest columnist: Time to repeal Dodd-Frank Act and free up our community banks – Waco Tribune-Herald

Should Dodd-Frank be repealed and replaced? Debate rages in Washington and beyond regarding the need to repeal or significantly amend the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, implemented in 2010 as a result of the 2008 financial meltdown. The intent was to address a lack of oversight and control of financial markets.

The market collapse was due primarily to mega banks and mortgage companies that made bad, even fraudulent loans, to individuals and businesses that didnt qualify, then sold these questionable loans to unsuspecting investors: a perfect storm for economic disaster! Yet this well-intentioned act has had dire consequences reaching far beyond the culprits of the financial disaster.

Our nations financial system is complex. You have Wall Street, investment banks, mortgage banks, the housing institutes of Fannie and Freddie, mega-banks (i.e., too big to fail) and then there are community banks.

Community banks are the backbone of small to mid-range businesses in our country. Did you know that the same sweeping regulations of the Dodd-Frank Act extend from Wall Street to the too-big-to-fail monster banks all the way down to small banks in rural communities across our land? Theres virtually no distinction in size, complexity, risk, etc. And, intentional or not, these regulations have created a chokehold and burden for neighborhood community banks, one greatly impeding their ability to do what theyve done well for decades: serve the financial needs of their communities. The overhead and expenses associated with meeting these federal requirements are more than many small banks can bear.

An American Action Forum study pegged costs of the act since inception at $36 billion. This has forced many community banks to re-evaluate their ability to remain a going community concern. Some smaller banks are forced to close while others choose to merge to achieve economies of scale to address federal compliance costs. This is specifically because the fixed costs of hiring yet another employee to address compliance issues impose a larger burden on small banks. Larger banks dont suffer from this issue as they have a much larger asset base across which to spread the cost of each incremental compliance-related hire.

The community banking group of financial institutions were not a part of the financial meltdown. In fact, they have stepped up and assisted families and businesses more than ever since many of the big banks have all but exited smaller markets since implementation of Dodd-Frank. The big banks today refuse to consider or even hear the varied stories of individual circumstances, choosing instead to follow algorithms and inflexible formulas for underwriting. This trend has caused many small- to mid-sized businesses to go longer before receiving much-needed financing due to having to cast a wider and wider net to find a bank amenable to provide financing. Couple this with many banks reluctance to lend to small businesses with short histories or weak collateral and you have a recipe for an unhealthy small-business environment.

Yes, there is a need for regulatory reform. The extreme overreach of the Dodd-Frank Act has penalized and punished hundreds of quality financial institutions across the country and in turn has negatively impacted millions of consumers and small businesses.

Small business and the folks they employ are the engine that powers this countrys economic success. Community banks are the reservoir of resources those small businesses need to grow and hire. When it works well, bank regulation helps ensure the safety and soundness of the overall banking system. When it does not work well, it constricts the natural cycle of lending, job growth and economic expansion.

When considering regulation for the financial industry, Congress should not lump community banks in with their larger, publicly held, bottom-line counterparts. The time has long passed for the Dodd-Frank Act to be repealed or replaced.

David Littlewood is president of First National Bank of McGregor. It is the oldest bank in McLennan County and seventh-oldest national bank in Texas still operating under its original charter.
