President Mugabe

President Mugabe turns 93 tomorrow, another milestone for the icon who has delivered national socio-economic development and liberation in its multiple facets.

He led during the liberation struggle in the 1970s. It was a difficult struggle which needed nerves of steel and a clear focus for those leading it. Some unfortunately fell in that armed conflict, and others renounced it when it got tough. Yet the President persisted and persevered as one of the leaders of that phase of our struggle. On April 18, 1980, political liberation came.

Immediately after Independence, President Mugabe set out to improve access to education for the majority. He knew that the minds of our people needed a formal education for them to be liberated and be able to grasp issues at a superior level. To attain this, education had to be made free so that even the poorest of the poor could access it. Thanks to this policy, millions attained basic education in the 1980s while others proceeded to acquire higher and tertiary education. They got educated enough to think and act more clearly and from a Zimbabwean perspective. This was important to decolonise the mind, liberate the minds of our people. Now Zimbabwe has the highest literacy rate in Africa and our education system is respected worldwide.

Also, he has led the way in delivering the economy to the people of Zimbabwe, another very difficult phase towards the total liberation of the people and their natural resources. In this phase he didnt have to seek guns from China, Russia and other countries in the Eastern bloc as he did in the 1970s. It was a struggle of ideas, minus guns. It started with his strong support for affirmative action in the 1990s. He personally and through the successive Governments he led, supported economic indigenisation through pressure groups such as the Indigenous Business Development Centre, Affirmative Action Group, Indigenous Business Womens Organisation and Sangano Munhumutapa in the quest to open up economic opportunities for black people who were systematically excluded in 90 years of colonialism.

It was clear to him that on its own, political liberation is hollow if it did not come with indigenous control of the economy. As a result of that understanding, many indigenous people started making inroads into previously white-dominated sectors of the economy banking, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality and so on. This laid a solid foundation for the likes of Roger Boka, Philip Chiyangwa, Jane Mutasa, Nigel Chanakira, Mutumwa Mawere, Nicholas Vingirayi, Shingi Mutasa, Ben Mucheche, Chemist Siziba, Strive Masiyiwa, James Makamba and others to prosper later on.

In saying this, we are not suggesting that President Mugabe and his Government materially supported all these businesspeople. Yes it was possible in some cases. However, the Government created that environment that inspired indigenous entrepreneurship, giving the people that understanding that blacks can run successful companies. That helped immensely in delivering economic liberation to the formerly oppressed masses and now Zimbabwe has one of the most indigenised economies in Africa.

It didnt end there. In 2000, the President launched yet another phase of economic liberation with the fast-track land reform and redistribution programme. Prior to that exercise, the land was one of the most exclusive sectors of the economy. In large measure, that was a result of a clause in the Lancaster House agreement that bound the new post-independence government to pursue the willing buyer, willing seller principle in democratising ownership of agricultural land. The difficulty was that only a few whites were willing to sell their land. The few who did, demanded above market prices that the new Government could not afford, hence that principle was dropped in the national interest.

Through the 2000 approach, the President decided that we go the revolutionary way to liberate the land from settler occupation. Through the land reform and redistribution programme, as many as 11 million hectares of land has been acquired from some 4 500 whites, mainly of British stock and has been allocated to at least 380 000 blacks. That programme has gone a long way in economically liberating blacks and decongesting rural areas.

Through his able leadership, the President made sure that the economic liberation agenda was underpinned by the law. To this end the Government came up with the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act in 2008. The law stipulates that any resource-based businesses must be majority owned by locals at 51 percent with foreigners owning 49 percent. In addition to that, economic indigenisation is enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe promulgated in 2013. This will go a long way in establishing a constitutional framework for blacks to be economically liberated.

The man who made this, and more, possible is President Mugabe, a liberator par excellence, whose 93rd birthday we mark tomorrow. He is an accomplished leader with the courage to take on the strength of the West. Indeed his birthday is a momentous occasion which gives us all an opportunity to celebrate the sterling work he has done for his country and the work he will do for his country well into the future.

Both Trump and Automation Are Challenging India’s IT Industry – Fortune

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks at the opening ceremony of 'Make in India Week' in Mumbai on Feb. 13, 2016. PUNIT PARANJPE/AFP/Getty Images

Automation and the new U.S. administration were the big unknowns at the Indian tech sector's annual shindig this week, with machines threatening to take away thousands of jobs and concerns over possible visa rule changes in the key American market.

But senior executives from the $150 billion industry, which rose to prominence at the turn of the century by helping Western firms solve the "Y2K" bug, said companies with skilled English-speaking staff and low costs could not be written off yet.

The sector, led by Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro, is lobbying hard as the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump considers putting in place visa restrictions.

The administration may also raise salaries paid to H1-B visa holders, a move that could significantly increase costs for IT companies that are already facing pressure on margins.

Get Data Sheet , Fortunes technology newsletter.

The longer-term challenge and opportunity for the sector was automation, executives said, as global corporations from plane-makers to consumer firms bet on the use of machines to further cut costs and boost efficiency.

That threatens lower-end software services and outsourcing jobs in a sector which employs more than 3.5 million people.

Summing up the mood at the three-day NASSCOM leadership event in Mumbai ending on Friday, Malcolm Frank, Chief Strategy Officer at Cognizant which has most of its operations in India, spoke of "fear and optimism."

Even top IT executives were "fearing the machines," he said.

Some Indian executives, including Infosys' Chief Operating Officer Pravin Rao, said that greater automation was expected to help engineers and developers shed repetitive jobs for more creative roles.

"Some part of the work we'll be automating 100 percent, you don't require people to do that kind of work," Rao told Reuters. "But there are always newer things, where we will be able to re-purpose employees who are released from those areas."

Moving Up Food Chain

With rapidly changing technology, Indian IT firms are emphasizing the need for retraining their workforce, in many cases setting up experience centers and learning zones on their sprawling campuses.

Some companies are partnering with universities to design and fund education programs, while staff members spoke of employers laying on training and webinars to help develop skills in automation and cloud computing.

"The threat from automation killing jobs is more than Trump's anticipated visa rule changes," a general manager-level employee at a top Indian IT firm said.

NASSCOM chairman and Tech Mahindra CEO C.P. Gurnani said technology would create new roles where "man will manage machines," even if a fourth of Indian IT jobs were to be replaced by machines over the next four years.

Indias Coal Consumption Problem

Hiring patterns may also change, with unconventional, high-value graduates likely to be more attractive, to the possible detriment of hiring from India's engineering colleges.

Infosys, which traditionally recruited only engineering graduates, is considering hiring people educated in liberal arts to add creative skills to its workforce, COO Rao said.

In a first, NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies), the leading Indian IT lobby group, delayed its initial growth forecast for fiscal 2017/18, citing market uncertainty.

Indian IT Sector Warns Against U.S. Visa Bill

NASSCOM officials said it had deferred its predictions by three months to give it time to gauge policy announcements in the United States which could make immigration rules tougher.

The industry body aims to announce a firmer growth forecast after the quarter to March when IT companies report annual earnings and give guidance for the next fiscal year.

"A certain level of ... uncertainty will continue over the medium-term," said NASSCOM President R. Chandrashekhar. "And businesses therefore have to take essential decisions on new technology in the face of a certain degree of uncertainty."

Govt mulls abolition of parallel degree programs in public varsities … – Capital FM Kenya (press release) (blog)

State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu noted that this might be one of the issues contributing to the current lecturers strike/FILE

By SIMON NDONGA, NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 19 The government is mulling the abolition of parallel degree programs in public universities across the country as a result of what it terms as a lack of accountability of the monies generated.

State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu noted that this might be one of the issues contributing to the current lecturers strike.

Speaking during his weekly briefing on Sunday, Esipisu indicated that such a move would be in line with the exam reform process currently being undertaken by the Education Ministry.

You know with this reform of the exam system, one of the results of that is the potential complete removal of the Parallel structure, he stated. You know very well that there have been issues about accountability in terms of the resources coming out of that parallel structure.

The Spokesman further indicated that funds raised through these programs have not been accounted for.

The absence of funding from that parallel structure obviously is something that needs to be looked at in terms of the underlying reasons for the current problems, he said.

Money that is paid from those programs to lecturers and to universities is not exactly in the public view and has not probably been accounted for in the way you would expect other government resources to be, he stated.

He however expressed confidence that Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi will be able to deal with the situation.

People do feel that all these things need to be put on the table as part of the discussions. What is it that is driving unrest in terms of the lecturers position? But this is a matter that I think the Cabinet Secretary is seized with and he has shown that he does get his work done so we do not think it is out of his hands, he stated.

University lecturers rejected a Sh10 billion pay deal that would see the lowest paid teaching staff earn Sh91,593.

Under the package, professors pay bracket will open up to an upper limit of Sh240,491 per month.

University Academic Staff Union (UASU) last week deal as a drop in the ocean and announced massive nationwide strike starting Monday.

UASU is insisting on a 30 percent pay rise as opposed to the 3 percent they would get under the proposed deal.

The redeeming chaos of a bull in the government china shop – Charleston Post Courier

BY KIRKPATRICK SALE

It all depends on what you think of the china shop. If you believe it is a neat, ordered operation, providing beautiful and necessary things for discerning and deserving people, then you will like it and be fearful of any bull that might be sniffing at the door.

If on the other hand you regard it as a worn out, dated collection of obsolete knick-knacks that have long since lost their value and are merely gathering dust, then you wont mind what the bull will do or how clumsily he does it.

Washington the political establishment is that china shop. And you know who the bull is. The liberal-global, welfare-warfare arrangement that has been government for the last 70 years, since Americas triumph in World War II, has been based on three unquestioned premises:

1. The right of citizens to welfare entitlements from the federal government, in the form of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and roughly 75 other means-tested welfare programs;

2. The creation and maintenance of a global empire based on military penetration (750 bases worldwide) providing cover and protection for economic (NAFTA, GATT) and political (NATO) penetration as well;

3. The unrestricted operation of the federal bureaucracy allowing the establishment consensus to prevail and run business as usual no matter which political party is in office.

And those premises have been enhanced and buttressed through the decades by the powerful liberal cultural forces of the American academy, which is the indoctrinatory home of the left and Marxist professoriate, the Hollywood film industry and its cavalcade of leftist stars-with-a-cause, and especially the modern media, slap-happy handmaidens of the establishment with no longer a pretense of objectivity in their fawning zeal for the Democratic party. With the Trump election, all that is challenged. Trump himself may not fully understand what he represents, but he is surrounded by people who do. In particular, his right-hand man and perhaps the power behind the throne, Stephen Bannon, who has been quoted as saying, with unusual clarity, I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of todays establishment. An astonishing statement, but it is clear he will do his best to see that Trump carries this out.

It is likely not to be neat and orderly, since thats not the kind of man Trump is, and indeed the first few weeks have seen some scattershot decrees. But when you name a cabinet that is designed to thwart much of what the liberal consensus has been doing for 70 yearsa woman for Education who is against public education, a man for the Environmental Protection Agency who has tried to eviscerate it in the past, a doctor for Housing and Urban Development who has no comprehension of what the department does, a fossil-fuel executive to be the top diplomat, and a labor secretary who pays minimum wage to his restaurant employeesthen it is obvious that there is some design and purpose at work.

I for one welcome this fundamental restraint of the liberal orthodoxy and hope the Trump regime will operate swiftly and intelligently to reorder government as we know it. But I fear that at the moment it is far more reactive that purposeful, Trump operating more by instinct, particularly his instinct to respond to challenge, than by any sense of where exactly he would want to end up in four years. In aid of providing a more methodical approach to taking down the establishment, I propose the following program as the basis for action for the Trump administration for the next four years.

Abolition of the income tax, a foolish tax that punishes people just for making money, which is what the whole society is about anyway, when a proper government would tax behavior that is unwanted. And with it, of course, abolishing the IRS.

Dismantling the empire and withdrawal of troops from all overseas wars and bases, to be redeployed for border protection and the management of the Army Corps of Engineers in the task of infrastructure repair at home.

Sharply cutting welfare, particularly for the able-bodied, and insisting on strictly enforced work requirements (in Maine, this cut welfare caseloads by 80 percent), plus the abolition of all marriage penalties and policies that work against stable families.

Abolishing foreign aid, in entirety, including the Export-Import Bank, programs that chiefly benefit and Wall Street banksters that make the loans and American global corporations that get the contracts, and with it the elimination of payments to foreign treaty organizations.

Elimination of federal interference in private, family and religious affairs, allowing states to decide issues such as abortion, pornography, prostitution, prayer in schools, political speech in churches, religious symbols in public and similar matters.

Elimination or serious reduction of all cabinet departments created since 1947, including Education, Energy, Health, Housing, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs, whose necessary functions, if any, could be decentralized to the states.

There: six simple, straightforward, effectual, and thoroughgoing ways to reform and restrain Washingtonian power and bring a few things crashing down. And easy enough for a bull to follow.

My Turn: Make no mistake President Trump is the enemy – Concord Monitor

In 49 B.C., Julius Caesar, governor of Gaul, and his legion forded the Rubicon, the dividing line between Gaul and Italy, and marched on Rome, thus declaring civil war.

Rome was the last of the free cities that had existed throughout the Mediterranean. They had vanished and finally only Rome, a republic, remained. Her people were free citizens of the republic, not subjects of a single ruler. The Roman Republic of a thousand years ended with Caesars invasion and the Roman Empire and rule of emperors actually dictators began.

The founders of our republic drew in part from the republican pillars of Rome as well as those of Athens and also from the Magna Carta in forming our country. They recognized the critical necessity of these and other imperatives to the construction and continuance of a democratic republic.

Donald Trump has crossed the Rubicon and has declared war on the republic of the United States. His goal is singular: disassemble our republic and remake it to his desire.

The foundations of our republic and the creation and protraction of our system of orderly government and citizen rights and protections are of no consequence to him or his minions.

Government agencies, judicial actions and beacons of freedom such as a free press are to be remade, ridiculed, silenced or eliminated.

He has removed the director of national intelligence and the military Joint Chiefs of Staff from the Principals Committee of the National Security Council because he knows more about intelligence than they. Hes replaced them with Steve Bannon and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, neither of whom has any experience in that bodys charge or work.

They will, however, do his bidding.

He pledges repeal of the Dodd-Frank Act, legislation that in essence limits how banks may invest, regulates certain credit card rules and, most significantly, makes homebuyers understanding of mortgage instruments easier and prevents unscrupulous lending practices.

This act is intended to prevent repeat of the disastrous implosion of the mortgage industry and bank failures in 2008-09 that resulted in massive home mortgage foreclosures, job losses and recession.

Repeal will benefit banks but not borrowers. Banks already are showing pleasure with repeal possibility.

Words and actions on other issues testify to his and his sycophants belligerence, dismissiveness of people and institutions they dislike and efforts to wrest power, such as: elimination of Planned Parenthood funding; the recent ban on immigration from selected countries; abolition of sanctuary cities; insult and castigation of a judge with whose decision he disagrees; Bannons rant that the media is the opposition party and needs to keep its mouth shut; silencing of Sen. Warren. The list is already endless.

His lack of understanding of domestic and international economic and political matters is mind-boggling. He denigrates the United Nations. He has sown divides between us and other governments.

We are at war with Trump and company. We should not believe otherwise. He is a clear and present danger. He is indeed the enemy within. The emperor must be deposed.

How mobile technology is transforming lives in rural India – TechCrunch

Melissa Jun Rowley Crunch Network Contributor

Melissa Jun Rowley is a journalist, entrepreneur and activist focused on the intersection of storytelling, technology and social justice. As the founder and CEO of Humanise, Inc., she is developing The Toolbox, a data-driven humanitarian initiative created by musician Peter Gabriel.

Deep in a rural village in India outside the city of Jhansi, children play on dirt roads where goats and cows roam. The humble and colorful homes have mud floors, and women collect drinking water from wells.

All the sights and sounds are quintessential aspects of the region, with the exception of one feature the use of smartphones to save lives. In this village, women healthcare workers, known as accredited social health activists (ASHAs), use a mobile application called mSaki to help them educate expecting mothers about maternal and neonatal danger signs.

Funded byQualcomm Wireless Reachand developed byIntraHealth International, mSaki is currently being used by 329 ASHAs to benefit 16,000 mothers. Amobile broadband initiativeaccomplishing such a task in rural India is no small feat.

According to the national health ministry, Indias newborn mortality rate stands at29 per 1,000 live births. The country is aiming to get the number down to a single digit. Additionally, the literacy rate among females in India is low. A background paper done by the New York-based International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity revealed in October of last year that only48 percent of India girlsstudying up to the fifth grade are literate.

As for internet connectivity, according to a Pew Research Center poll, a mere22 percent of Indias adultscould get online in 2015. That being said, there are nationwide efforts being made to get people connected. The countysDigital Indiaprogram aims to digitally empower citizens and provide broadband in remote areas. As part of this plan, the government wants to make mobile connectivity available in more than 40,000 villages by 2018.

In the meantime, mSaki is still able to have an impact, because the application is designed to manage low connectivity. The data thats fed into mobile devices is stored offline. When theres a network thats available, the data is then uploaded to a server.

Frontline health worker Ram Kumari Sharma travels to villages across India. Using mSaki, she registers the details of pregnant women, new mothers and newborn babies, and gives them medical examinations. Through text and animated images the tool assists her in describing the day-to-day symptoms patients should look out for and how they should address them.

The mSaki app also supports auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) working in the field. Anita VT is an ANM who has worked in the village health center for the last 20 years, registering patients, delivering babies and vaccinating children. While the facility she works in is no more than a small room with a few manual tools, the mobile technology she uses brings an aspect of the process into the 21st century.

I can do everything on this, says VT, pointing to her tablet. Why should I do it on paper?

Meenakshi Jain, IntraHealth senior advisor of programs, says mSaki as a whole is enabling a more cost-effective and efficient health registration process.

The government of India has a program across the county where every pregnant mother has to go into an online system, she explains. Its the duty of frontline workers like ASHAs and midwives to make this happen. So they have the job of identifying and registering pregnant women. The catch is that they have to fill out forms, and then travel 10-20 km, sit with a data entry operator at a community health center, and then get the data fed into the computer. What mSaki does is it saves a lot of paper time.

To get the funding needed to scale the mSaki program, IntraHealth is generating evidence to share with stakeholders the federal government, state government and donors that mSaki is improving the health and well-bring of mothers and children. Jain says she would like the government to implement mSaki or any similar application, as long as it empowers frontline health workers to do their jobs better and uses the most recent technology. If IntraHealth is able to bring in more funding, mSaki will continue to evolve and include technical areas such as family planning and literacy.

About 450 kilometers from Jhansi, the nonprofitPlanned Social Concern (PSC)is providing micro-finance opportunities to women in a village outside the city of Jaipur.

A number of PSCs micro-finance participants are able to build their own small businesses. One of the women in the program says she was able to build a new home and send her kids to school, thanks to PSC.

This economic empowerment is being enhanced through the power of mobile broadband. Through a partnership with Qualcomm Wireless Reach, PSC was able to digitize its entire loan-making process in 2014. The program is now 100 percent paperless.

Ravi Gupta, COO of PSC, says that through using 3G-connected tablets and a mobile application called MicroLekha, the organization is able to function faster and be more transparent.

When we were doing it [making loans] manually it used to take 17 to 18 days to process a loan, says Gupta. Now with MicroLekha we can place a loan in three to four days.

Because all the documents are stored digitally, theres no need for customers to submit paperwork each time they apply for loans. When customers pay back their loans they get receipts and account updates via SMS.

This is just the beginning. When Digital India is able to fully penetrate the rural parts of the country, hopefully even more mobile tech designed to assist health workers, educate families and facilitate small business opportunities will be implemented.

My wish is that large tech firms will take cues from these mobile for impact programs, and create similar initiatives for poor parts in the Western world, as well.

Unlocking the potential of eye tracking technology – TechCrunch

The concept of measuring and responding to human eye motion, or eye tracking, isnt new, but the past year saw a rising interest in the technology. There have been a slew ofacquisitions of eye tracking startups by large firms and the rollout of several devices and software that support eye tracking.

Eye tracking sensors provide two main benefits, says Oscar Werner, vice president of the eye tracking company Tobii Tech. First, it makes a device aware of what the user is interested in at any given point in time. And second, it provides an additional way to interact with content, without taking anything else away. That means it increases the communication bandwidth between the user and the device.

Theres a chance that soon eye tracking will be a standard feature of a new generation of smartphones, laptops and desktop monitors setting the stage for a huge revaluation of the way we communicate with devicesor how they communicate with us.

In the past year eye tracking technology moved from being a promising technology to being adopted in commercial products in a wide array of consumer segments simultaneously, Werner says.

Dominic Porco, chief executive officer at Impax Media, a digital advertising company, says less expensive and more potent hardware; new open source software platforms; and new easier and faster ways of obtaining data to train algorithm models have driven the progress in eye tracking technology.

Companies like NVIDIA have launched products with more powerful GPUs at competitive prices, accelerating the image recognition speeds, Porco says.

Porco adds that popular crowd-sourcing marketplaces such as Amazon Mechanical Turk have enabled the collection of larger and broader datasets to train recognition algorithms. These developments have accelerated progress in eye tracking technology significantly, allowing researchers and developers to go faster through their cycles of experimentation and implementation.

But any technology wont grow unless it can fulfill specific demands and use cases. And in the case of eye tracking, there seems to be no shortage.

In a push to create a more immersive experience, VR headset companies are making large investments in eye tracking technology. In fact, in many ways, eye tracking is seen as the technology complementing VR.

VR is about immersion, Tobiis Werner says. But a VR headset without eye tracking will assume that I am speaking to the person in front of my forehead. It is approximating my area of interest to the direction of my forehead. We all know this is not true. Our real interest is where I am looking, and there is often a difference between where I look and the direction of my head. VR headsets need to take your gaze into account be become truly immersive.

Eye tracking technology is key to foveated rendering, a technique where only the portion of the image that lands on the fovea (the part of the retina that can see significant detail) is rendered in full quality.

With foveated rendering, Werner says, there will be a 30 to 70 percent decrease in the amount of pixels drawn, a processing power saving that can translate to higher framerates and the ability to achieve high quality output with 4k headsets as opposed to the 24k level needed to meet natural human vision level.

Also, eye tracking technology will make it possible to reduce graphics distortion caused from not taking eye position account when rendering VR graphics, Werner adds.

Fove, a kickstarter-funded project, is the first VR headset to have embedded eye-tracking. Others are not far behind. In the past months, Google and Facebook acquired eye tracking startups Eyefluence and Eye Tribe respectively, and are expected to embed the technology in their future products.

And SMI, a leader in eye tracking technology, has initiated several partnerships and projects to bring eye tracking to both standalone VR head-mounted displays and smartphone slot-ins.

Eye tracking will also be part of the upcoming Khronos VR API, an open standard under development which has garnered the support of Oculus, Google, NVIDIA and others.

The view that eye tracking will be a key part of second generation headsets is shared by a large number of VR HMD vendors, Werner says. This drives technology development and innovation.

Another successful VR demo, at HTC, that showed room scale gaming that actually worked.

For decades, weve used gamepads, joysticks, keyboards, mice and other peripherals to make PCs and video game consoles understand where were looking at. With eye tracking, your computer already knows what youre looking at and can react accordingly.

When you want to interact with an object you just look at it and press a button, says Werner. The computer understands which object you want to interact with. You dont need to drag the mouse or controller to the place you are already looking.

Whether its about hacking at an object, aiming at a target, designating a location for the game character to run, or simply changing the direction of the point-of-view camera, eye tracking might make it a whole lot easier for gamers to interact with the gaming environment. This can mean a big deal for games that require a high level of mouse and controller handling.

While it might render previously challenging games too easy, it can also pave the way for games that are much more fast paced.

Eye tracking can also create a cleaner and less intrusive user interface.

In games, graphical artists spend a lot of time creating beautiful environments, Werner says, and are in a constant battle with UI interaction designers that need to place UI elements on top, since it clutters the immersive feeling.

With eye tracking, Werner explains, you can hide the UI or make it transparent and only make it visible when the gamers gaze is directed toward it. This creates a more immersive feeling and solves a constant battle between graphical artists and UI designers, he says.

For simulations and virtual worlds, eye tracking can enable gaze aware objects, where game objects or characters will react to the gaze of the player to make the simulation more realistic, Werner says. This means that youll have to be careful not to stare too long at a mercenarys purse when entering a tavern in your favorite RPG.

Tobii itself offers a line of tack-on eye-tracking devices and eye-tracking embedded laptops and has worked with gaming companies on eye-tracking-enhanced versions of popular games such as Rise of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Watch Dogs 2.

It is unlikely that eye tracking will replace controllers any time soon, but according to Werner, thanks to the technology, PC games will take into account one of the most powerful interaction methods we as humans have, our eyes. PC gamers will be able to utilize an additional control mechanism complementing the mouse and the controller. This will drive more natural and interaction without taking anything away.

Beyond the consumer level, the benefits of eye tracking expand to other realms where measurements of human gaze are key to obtaining results and insights.

There is an increasing interest in using eye tracking to help diagnose and potentially treat neurological disorders, says Bryn Farnsworth, science editor at biometric research company iMotions. For example, infants usually like to look at images with peoples facesscenes that have a social element.

Farnsworth explains that infants that go on to develop autism are much more likely to have a preference for images that feature geometric shapes, while for children with the Williams syndrome, Farnsworth says, the situation is reversed, meaning that they show a marked preference for social scenes in comparison to neurotypical children.

This all suggests, Farnsworth says, that the analysis of eye movements may help guide early diagnosis.

A research paper by students at UCSD states that eye tracking technology holds promise as an objective methodology for characterizing the early features of autism, because it can be implemented with virtually any age or functioning level.

Labs such as iMotions are helping researchers obtain those metrics through eye tracking devices in order to better understand and assess the conditions of patients.

Eye tracking company RightEye uses the technology to help physicians in administering test and finding symptoms for illnesses ranging from simple concussions to Alzheimers disease and dyslexia, and to help treat children with autism.

Eye tracking can also be a breakthrough for patients with physical disabilities, especially as affordable, consumer-level devices become available. This is a large area for eye tracking and it is evolving, says Tobiis Werner. Gaze keyboards and control panels powered by eye tracking, Werner explains, give people with diseases such as cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries a means to communicate, control their environment and develop skills through therapy.

In the current state, the best metric advertisers get from ads are impressions and click numbers. But those numbers do not precisely reflect the effectiveness of ad campaigns because a lot of what gets counted as impressions goes to waste on non-human sources. That is something that changes with eye tracking technology.

The advertising industry is currently in the midst of some major upheaval when it comes to universal standards for measuring ad impact, says Porco, the Impax chief executive. The whole concept of viewability is now being redefined to make more sense in the age of ad blockers and bot traffic.

With eye tracking technology, online advertisers will be able to measure exactly how many actual human eyes actually view their ads when they appear on the page. While gaining precise metrics would be nearly impossible until such time as every computer and mobile device is embedded with eye tracking technology, using eye tracking does give insights into how users interact with ads.

In the physical world, however, eye tracking is already showing promise.

Market research firms are experimenting with directly measured biometric data to precisely determine the composition of people in out-of-home media environments such as retail stores, for audience measurement purposes, Porco says.

Porcos company, Impax Media, is investing heavily in eye tracking technology along with other computer vision techniques to collect attention metrics from its proprietary in-store advertising screens. Were big believers that the future of the ad industry is going to be grounded in attention metrics, as opposed to impressions, and eye tracking is, hands down, the best way to track attention, Porco says.

The data, Porco says, helps advertisers and location partners to assess audience interest in various messaging angles, and to correlate this information with parameters like location, timing and demographics. Its great for media buyers seeking to get the most for their budgets, and for store managers dealing with questions about everything from inventory to staff shift schedules.

While retailers always benefit from collecting information about customers, the area is somewhat a gray and is often subject to controversy and falls across privacy regulations. However, Porco underlines that theres no need to collect identity parameter in order to glean useful insights, and anonymized data about gaze point, age and gender along with duration of view suffice.

Its important for market researchers to evaluate peoples interactions and expectations across the whole omnichannel customer journey and its key touchpoints, says Simone Benedetto, UX researcher at TSW, an Italy-based market research lab.

Recent advances in eye tracking, Benedetto explains, open up new possibilities in both lab and real world neuromarketing tests.

It is crucial for us to involve users in product and service design and evaluation, Benedetto says. This doesnt mean just to ask them their opinion, but to collect objective data coming from their eyes and brain while interacting with the product or service.

TSW uses mobile eye tracking units along with other wearables in order to get precise user and customer metrics on a wide variety of products and services, both digital (such as online ads, mobile apps, websites, software and device control panels) and physical (such as print material, product packages, cars, home furniture and retail stores).

Being able to weigh the users natural interaction with products and services enables researchers to identify real usability problems and frustration points and collect actionable information that gives insights into customer satisfaction and engagement and drive design decisions.

One of the great advances last year has been the introduction of object tracking in relation to the analysis of data from mobile eye trackers, says iMotions Farnsworth, referring to the process by which specific visual features can be delineated from a scene, and information about how that particular feature is attended to can then be recorded.

This means that an individual can, for example, wear portable eye tracking glasses, interact with their environment normally, and how they attend to certain features can be automatically analyzed how long they look at a street map when theyre out walking, if they notice an advert that they passed, Farnsworth says. Being able to automatically understand how specific features are attended to clearly has great ramifications for understanding humans, and using that knowledge further.

From my perspective theres a huge market behind the exploitation of eye tracking into UX-neuromarketing investigations, Benedetto says. Eye tracking allows the implicit measurement of user behavior, and turns that measurement into quantitative objective data. We have only relied on subjective data for years, and its definitely time for a change.

Close Up of blue eye with computer circuit board lines, digital composite

Tobiis Werner told me he believes a new paradigm of PC usage will emerge, where eye tracking is a fifth modality that, in combination with touch screens, mouse/touchpad, voice and keyboard, will make computers much more productive and intuitive. Gaze always precedes any kind of action that you do with mouse, keyboard and voice, so much smarter user interactions will be designed using these technologies, he says.

As vision is the most used sense among human beings, being able to track and measure it digitally will have a great impact on how we make our intentions known to computers, wittingly or unwittingly.

Oppo teases new mobile camera technology ahead of MWC – TechCrunch

Weve entered crunch time for getting all of those last minute teasers out before the kick of Mobile World Congress, the years biggest smart phone show. Some have been cagey around their big news ahead of the event in Barcelona, while others, like LG havent left much all that to the imagination.

Oppo, the rising-est star in a Chinese market full of them, is playing its cards close to the vest with its own announcement. The company, which sprung to the top of Chinas smartphone sales last year, thanks to a 122-percent year-on-year increase in sales, isnt talking device yet, so much as underlying technology.

The company used the opportunity to discuss past years focus on imagining, including a slew of products with devoted selfie technologies, like last years Selfie Expert series of handsets, which featured a front-facing 16-megapixel camera.

The next step is something Oppos currently referring to as the 5x Project, which according to the press material, will give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images. Not much in the way of details at this early stage, but the focus (as it were) seems to be on hi-res image processing, and, hopefully, more than just super detailed selfies.

New gene drive technology could wipe out malaria, but is it safe? – Science Magazine

New gene drive technology carries hope and risk

Caroline Davis2010 / Flickr

By Yasemin SaplakogluFeb. 19, 2017 , 12:15 PM

Q: Should we be looking at how the environment might be affected by gene drives?

A: Absolutely, this is a manipulation of nature. We dont know how it would affect population dynamics and ecosystems. In some cases, the purpose of gene drives would be to reduce population sizes of an organism, which could influence processes like pollination and transmission of parasites. In other cases, we would use gene drives to weed out disease by driving the population that carries that disease to extinction.

Q: What is the worst-case scenario of releasing these organisms?

A: Eliminating an organism or reducing its numbers greatly. By eliminating one plant species, you cause the proliferation of others, and this leads to a series of changes in the ecosystem. We need to understand the system well enough so that we can take ethical concerns into account as we make decisions.

Evolutionary ecologist James Collins

Charles Kazilek

Q: Who gets to make these decisions?

A:Social scientists are trying to come up with better ways to sample human populations to get a better sense of whats tolerable and whats not tolerable in terms of their release. . If you release [modified mosquitoes] in Town A, the mosquitoes may not have any problem flying to Town B, even though Town B is not interested in having them. Theyll go anyway.

A:The advantage of these other technologies is that they are effective only as long as youre releasing modified male mosquitoes. When you stop the manipulation, the population would bounce back to normal levels. You have a control over the system that is yet to be demonstrated for gene drives where once you alter the genes in these populations, they just keep changing.

This Powerful New Technology May Be The Only Way To Explore Venus – Seeker

Venus is a toxic hellhole that's not only hot enough on the surface to melt lead, but the thick carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere has a pressure about 90 times greater than Earth's. This isn't very good news for any robots we want to send there to explore the planet and do science.

It's not like we haven't tried landing on Venus before. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the Soviet Union tried to send a series of 16 spacecraft to Venus as part of the Venera program - which included flybys, atmospheric probes and landers. But all Venus surface missions quickly succumbed to the extreme heat and pressure, most lasting for less than a couple of hours.

But there is hope. NASA engineers at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, are developing a new kind of integrated circuit that not only survives the rigors of being in space, it could also allow the delicate electronics inside Venus landers to live 100 times longer than previous efforts.

Virginia Tech men’s tennis to debut unprecedented electronic line-calling technology – Virginia Tech Collegiate Times

Athletics and analytic technology have become increasingly intertwined in recent years, in nearly every sport at both the professional and collegiate levels. Its no secret that Virginia Tech, a school that prides itself on innovation, has been a leader in this trend. There has been a lot of talk about the mens basketball teams unique use of technology and data analytics, but the mens tennis team has flown under the radar with its innovative practices.

This Tuesday, when Virginia Tech faces off against the College of Charleston at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, it will be the first college ever to implement a live line-call review and challenge system.

The challenge system is through this technology called PlaySight, which we had installed in 2015. This system is used for statistic tracking and also can call the balls in and out, said junior Freddy Mesmer. In the match, we will get two challenges per set. If you get your challenge right, you get to keep it and if you're wrong, you lose one.

PlaySight was founded in 2011 and has since gained an incredible amount of support from the tennis community, drawing investments from numerous tennis icons including Novak Djokovic, Billie Jean King and Pete Sampras. The companys SmartCourt technology has become exceedingly popular, not just within tennis but also other sports, including basketball. The Golden State Warriors were actually the first professional basketball team to implement the technology, doing so in their practice facility.

PlaySight was invented in Israel by some jet fighters who loved tennis. After every flight, they did a debriefing on their mission and they applied that idea to tennis, said head coach Jim Thompson in text messages sent to the Collegiate Times. In the debrief they wanted to measure their performance in order to improve, and that is exactly what PlaySight has done for our team.

The SmartCourt technology is a setup of multiple HD cameras that track practices and the data in real time, while also serving as a tool for players and coaches to go back and analyze footage instantaneously from various devices.

We mainly use the PlaySight technology for statistics, Thompson said. The machines provide all types of information: spin rate of the ball, speed of every shot, calories burned, distance traveled and location where balls are landing. We certainly use this as much as possible, but we are always trying to improve. It is the same with our strength program, nutrition and even sports psychology. Every edge helps!

The players have really enjoyed using the new technology and are intrigued by the prospect of electronic live line-calling being used more widely in the future.

I think it'll be extremely beneficial for college tennis if this becomes a trend, Mesmer said. The players are extremely excited about it. Anytime you get to be a part of the first of anything it is an awesome opportunity, and it's so cool Virginia Tech gets to be a part of it.

Thompson has high expectations for the technologys future and is certain that this is the beginning of a new development in the sport.

This is the first time ever for college tennis to use the technology for challenges, but I think this is not a test run. This is inventing the future, Thompson said. Who knows what it will look like in years to come but I feel certain this will be more the norm in 10 years.

‘Good progress’ on sinkhole repairs but unknown when Laurel Canyon will reopen – LA Daily News

A stretch of Laurel Canyon Boulevard remained closed Sunday after a 20-foot sinkhole swallowed two vehicles Friday in Studio City and left a woman injured, according to Los Angeles officials.

Crews have been working around the clock since the Friday night incident and were making good progress on repairs involving an underground sewer pipe, said Gary Lee Moore, a Los Angeles city engineer, Sunday.

Moore could not say Sunday morning when Laurel Canyon Boulevard between Moorpark Street and Valley Spring Lane would reopen to traffic. Woodbridge Street east of Laurel Canyon Boulevard, where the sinkhole was located, also remained closed and was expected to be for weeks as crews worked on repairs, he said.

Safety is the number one concern, Moore said. The last thing we want is to have that area collapse and then sewage...could then back up and come out on the street.

The giant hole on Woodbridge Street east of Laurel Canyon was likely caused by the heavy rain and the failure of a sewer pipe that is more than 80 years old, according to city engineers. The top of the 48-inch semi-eliptical pipe eroded away and then the soil between the top of the pipe and the street had gotten into the sewer pipe, causing the asphalt above to collapse.

Los Angeles firefighters rescued a 48-year-old woman who managed to escape her car inside the hole but was found screaming for help atop her overturned vehicle. After she was rescued, a second vehicle, which had been vacated, fell into the sinkhole.

Crews have been installing large steel shoring boxes that straddle the underground sewage pipe and doing other work so that there is no further collapse of the street and the soil surrounding the pipe, Moore said. Once shoring is complete, they will put personnel down into the hole to remove the debris in the sewer and to start repairs on the reinforced concrete pipe.

The sewage that came out of the pipe remained inside the hole below the street and was flowing into the downstream portion of the pipe thats still there, Moore said.

Theyll be in live sewage, he said of the contractors. Its tough work.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page, which identified the injured woman as makeup artist Stephanie Scott, had raised more than $15,000 for Scotts medical bills and other expenses related to the incident.

Stephanie will have to replace her car and will also have unforeseen medical bills, according to a post by the creator of the page, who identified himself as a friend and co-worker. Her car had all of her work equipment inside and needs to be replaced as well.

Scott sustained some damage to her hand and will be out of work for some time but is home and doing Ok, said a post by the pages creator, Garry Allyn.

Scott did not immediately return a request for comment made through the GoFundMe page.

Mike Trout stays humble, but frustrated with Angels’ progress – USA TODAY

With MLB spring training underway, there's plenty to talk about. USA TODAY Sports

Mike Trout has more MVP awards than postseason appearances, two-to-one.(Photo: Chris Carlson, AP)

TEMPE, Ariz. The worlds best baseball player has a new teammate on each side of his locker in the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse, corner infielder Luis Valbuena to the left, second baseman Danny Espinosa to the right. Yet another newcomer, outfielder Cameron Maybin, is just a couple of stalls away.

Theyre part of a makeover intended to help the Angels bounce back from a 74-88 finish, their worst since 1999, and ideally get Mike Trout back to the playoffs.

Entering his sixth full season at 25, Trout has more MVP awards than postseason appearances, two-to-one. He has five times as many All-Star Game invites and three times as many runner-up finishes in the MVP race as trips to the playoffs.

Mike Trout's intense offseason training consisted of running with a barbell on his back

The personal achievements are great, but the lack of team success must be getting old.

Its frustrating, for sure, said Trout, pointing to a rash of injuries to the pitching staff as a prime reason for last years pratfall. You want to get to the playoffs. Its fun. Youve seen the World Series last year. You want to be in that atmosphere.

Several things would have to go right for Trout to experience the playoff vibe again this season. Years of neglecting the farm system while spending lavishly and often unwisely on free agents Josh Hamilton didnt pan out, and C.J. Wilson only in his first two seasons have put the Angels in a bind.

They dont have much help coming from the minors, and only enough room in the budget for modest additions.

Second-year general manager Billy Eppler made some opportunistic moves in the offseason, trading for Maybin, Espinosa and catcher Martin Maldonado. He also signed free agents Ben Revere, Jesse Chavez and Valbuena, the latter costing the most at $15 million over two years.

Its debatable whether that will be enough to contend in a division where the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers loom as favorites. Los Angeles likely will need starting pitchers Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs and Matt Shoemaker to make strong comebacks from serious injuries to have a fighting chance.

We feel like were going to be competitive and need to stay healthy, and we have to play well in our division, owner Arte Moreno said. The Astros should be better, Seattles Seattle, and Texas won a lot of one-run games, thirtysomething one-run games. Its pretty hard to repeat that.

Regardless of whether the odds are stacked in their favor or against, the Angels can count on Trout maintaining an optimistic outlook, at least publicly.

In his first media session of the spring Saturday, the reigning AL MVP expressed a desire to steal 40 bases, revealed slightly longer hair Some of my teammates complained that I had the same buzz cut since third grade and confirmed he would not play in the World Baseball Classic, although he would not discuss why.

He also gave a hearty approval to the Epplers additions, especially Maybin, who will play alongside him in left.

Cams obviously fast, Trout said. I got to see him play when he was with Detroit. He brings a lot to the table. Last year we were trying to fill some holes in left field. Its going to be fun. The outfields going to be fast.

After his stolen-base total dwindled from a career-best of 49 as a rookie in 2012 to 11 in 2015, Trout returned to his aggressive ways on the basepaths last season, swiping 30. He also led the league with 116 walks and a .441 on-base percentage while batting .315 with 29 homers and 100 RBI on the way to his second MVP award in three years.

In addition, Trout cut down his strikeouts from 184 in 2014 to 137 last year, an indication of his ability to keep improving even when hes at the games top echelon. Teammates marvel at the way Trout answers the bell night after night he has played at least 157 games in each of the last four seasons while remaining remarkably consistent. In that four-year span, Trout has produced an on-base-plus slugging percentage of between .988 and .991 three times.

Hes the best player in the game and it shows on an everyday basis, thats the thing thats most important and special about him, right fielder Kole Calhoun said. He doesnt take it for granted. He tries to win, hes there to work every day and he wants to be in the lineup every day. Thats the making of one of the all-time greats in this game.

Now, if only fans could see him in the postseason.

Saudi FM: ‘Progress Can Be Made in Arab-Israeli Conflict’ – The Jewish Press – JewishPress.com

Photo Credit: Mueller / MSC - Wikimedia Commons

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir told those gathered at the Munich Security Conference this weekend that he is still an optimist about resolving the challenges facing the Middle East.

If your job is to solve problems you cannot be a pessimist, he said, and so we have to do everything we can to deal with the challenges that we face.

Among the many challenges he listed were the conflict in Yemen, the crisis in Syria, an Iran that is rampant in its support of terrorism, a region that is rife with terrorism challenges in reforming our economies and bringing the standard of living of our people up to a higher level, he said with a small smile.

He also mentioned the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority but framed it in a broader historical context, similar to that which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself has done over the past several years.

We face the challenge of trying to bring peace between Israelis and Arabs, he said, later adding that he indeed believes that in this particular area, progress can be made in the Arab-Israeli conflict if theres a will to do so.

We all know what a settlement can look like, he said, we just need the political will to do so. And my country stands ready with other Arab countries to see how we can promote that, he added, clarifying that Saudi Arabia is game for another try at peace-making and negotiations.

The comments also support last weeks comments in Washington DC that U.S. President Donald Trump and Israels Prime Minister Netanyahu have been discussing a broader canvas upon which to work out a new and different peace initiative.

Al-Jubeir expressed his countrys confidence in the new president and comparing him to the late President Ronald Reagan. I like to remind my European friends that when Ronald Reagan was elected they thought World War III would take place and yet how did it all turn out? He pushed back against the Soviet Union and he ended the Cold War.

When we look at the Trump Administration we see a president whos pragmatic and practical, a businessman, problem-solver, a man whos not an idealogue. We see a man who has a certain view of the world, a man who wants America to play a role in the world.

Our view is that when America disengages it creates tremendous damage in the world because it leaves vacuums, and into those vacuums evil forces flow and it takes many times the energy to push back against these evil forces to prevent them from emerging in the first place, he explained.

Men’s basketball points to close games as progress – The Depaulia

Barring a miracle in next months Big East Tournament, the DePaul Blue Demons probably wont be dancing in this years NCAA Tournament.

However, that doesnt mean the Blue Demons arent showing considerable progress on the court. Three of their 12 Big East losses have come by a combined seven points against Big East heavyweights Georgetown, Butler and reigning national champions Villanova.

These games point directly to the progress head coach Dave Leitao has made in his second year as the Blue Demons head coach.

Leitao, who coached the Blue Demons to their last tournament appearance in 2004, says progress is measured in a, lot of different ways, not necessarily just by wins or losses.

At the time of this writing, DePaul currently sits at 1-12 in the Big East and just 8-18 overall. However, that doesnt tell the whole story of the team.

The Blue Demons are one of the younger teams in the conference with only one senior, Billy Garrett, Jr. in the starting lineup. The Blue Demons are led on offense by sophomore Eli Cain, who leads the team with 15.8 points per game.

As Cain progresses, so too do the Blue Demons. Robert ONeill, co-managing editor of SB Nations Big East Coast Bias blog said the Blue Demons are, absolutely, Cains team going forward.

ONeill also added that DePauls narrow loss at Villanova in December represents the, absolute best that DePaul can be, while DePaul was, the better team for 43 of the 45 minutes, in their home overtime loss to Butler in January.

Getting over that hump is a major obstacle for the Blue Demons going forward. Getting a landmark win against ranked opponents brings prestige and publicity to the program. While its not the ultimate goal, it represents a milestone on DePauls journey back to national relevance.

ONeill said that one of DePauls biggest challenges lies in the fact that they play in such a top-heavy conference.

When Leitao led the Blue Demons to their last NCAA tournament, he did so in Conference USA, not the Big East (DePaul joined the Big East in 2005).

ONeill says DePaul could win four to six conference games if they played in another, perhaps more balanced conference such as the SEC or the Pac-12.

Indeed, this is an exciting time for the program, which is leaving Rosemonts Allstate Arena after this season after 37 years for the brand new Wintrust Arena located in downtown Chicago. Both ONeill and Leitao agree that the new arena will give the Blue Demons a boost in recruiting.

While the arena isnt completely built yet, ONeill said it should have, pretty cool bells and whistles in locker rooms and other team areas, adding that, every little edge you can get helps.

Leitao said he, constantly, talks to potential recruits about the new arena, taking them to the construction site and showing them photos of what the new arena will look like. Leitao added that the new arena represents the change happening within the program.

For the players, those close calls against the conferences upper echelon point to what the team could be. For every close loss against Villanova, DePaul has also suffered heavy losses against top tier opponents like Creighton and Seton Hall.

In those games, the Blue Demons suffer from what junior Joe Hanel called a lack of focus, which is common among less experienced teams like DePaul.

We have to put together 40 minutes if we want to win, Hanel said. It cant be 35 minutes or 34 minutes.

Freshman Brandon Cyrus said hes noticed, increased competitiveness, in practices, adding that, guys are just trying to make each other better.

Cyrus also represents the kind of player Leitao is trying to recruit into the program. The Canadian native played high school basketball at La Lumiere in La Porte, IN., an area Leitao has focused on recruiting. Cyrus was considered by many to be the best of DePauls 2016 recruiting class.

While Chicago has built a reputation for producing excellent high school recruits, DePaul is at a disadvantage.

Leitao said that before he can land Chicago-based recruits, he has to give them a reason to stay here. Leitao faces a long road back for DePaul, but if the program can build off the potential theyve shown this season, then there truly is hope for the near future. ONeill says that DePaul could be a solid team in three to four seasons, but they face an uphill battle in a conference that already features perennial NCAA tournament hopefuls like Villanova, Butler and Creighton.

However, DePaul will have to overcome the loss of Billy Garrett, Jr. next season. Garrett, Jr. has been a team leader since his freshman season and recently became the all-time leader in free throws for DePaul.

ONeill, Hanel, Leitao and Cyrus all agreed that it will be a team effort to replace Garrett, Jr. both on the court and in the locker room. As Cain and Cyrus develop, look for them to become potential leaders going forward.

In the interest of ensuring transhuman is NPOV: Who decides what the definition of transhumanism is?

This element of humanism, is that from huxley or someone else?

Does the man who invented the word, Julian Huxley decide the definition of Transhumanism, does one in modern times who publically states the definition decide or does the World Transhumanism Association decide?

I would like clarity as to who ultimately determines what transhumanism means because the definition used by the WTA and other groups differs. More importantly, what gives one authority or the command to be able to define in an undisputed what transhumanism is, so that other POV's can be excluded?

For instance I have reviewed the entire transtopia.org, prometheism.net and cosmotheism.net site, and I can't seem to figure out how you could label it as disputed in the links section?

What is to say the world transhumanism association isnt disputed?

I can see how one might label cosmotheism as white racial separatist, but prometheism.net and transtopia.org I would like more discussion as to why it is disputed as a transhumanism group. And why is Cosmotheism a disputed offshoot? Cosmotheism was developed in the 1960's and 1970's which came before extropy and WTA, so why is it an offshoot? I thought offshoot meant, that something existed and a branch or seed came off that plant. Can you please define offshoot and explain who decides what is or is not transhumanism?

More on this humanism element of Transhumanism, is that from huxley or someone else? Thanks.

Why does the link to cosmotheism keep getting deleted? Just because that article had a banned user associated w it doesn't make it any less relevent. Sam [Spade] 20:56, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I'd like to incorporate a mention of the Human Cognome Project into this article, as it is relevent to human brain augmentation and AI research. Any suggestions? -- Dave User:Sydhart

Why is transtopia.org, prometheism.net and cosmotheism.net labelled pseudotranshuman organizations? To me that represents bias as to why those web sites would be labelled pseudo, what makes a web site pseudo?

On the front page of prometheism.net it states the following

(Prometheism is) The First Sovereign Transtopian & Neo-Eugenic Libertarian Religious-State.

In the principles sections of prometheism it states

Our Promethean Species embraces Conscious Evolution

Our immediate aim is to create a neo-eugenically enhanced race that will eventually become a new, superior species with whatever scientific means are available at the present time. In the short-term, this will be achieved via neo-eugenics, ie. voluntary positive eugenics, human cloning, germ-line engineering, gene therapy and genetic engineering.

In the long-term, when the science becomes available we intend to utilize transhuman technologies: nanotechnology, mind uploading, A/I and other variations of ultra exo-tech.

Our goal is to enable total and unlimited self-transformation, consciousness and expansion across the universe of our species.

It also states note the key words - Transhuman Technologies... and the embracing of transhumanism and extropy.

We Define neo-eugenics as conscious evolution (these words are interchangeable). Purposefully directed evolution via voluntary positive neo-eugenics (including voluntary selective breeding), cloning, genetic engineering and ultimately any and all transhuman technologies. Neo-Eugenics means harnessing all science, technology and knowledge available now or in the future, guiding it with spirituality, ethical considerations and higher consciousness, ultimately towards achieving total and unlimited self transformation. The term Neo-Eugenics embodies the sciences and philosophies involved in Biotechnology, Extropy and Transhumanism all merged in a philosophy of spiritual Conscious Evolution.

http://prometheism.net/principles.htm

I believe removing prometheism from this page, will be cause to bring this issue to arbitration to confirm that the individual who keeps removing it obviously is biased and lacks an understanding of what transhumanism. NPOV. thats your problem brian NPOV and blatant bias.

Dnagod 22:22, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Extropy and a lot of the other sites listed under manifestos are linked else where in the article, so I felt it important to also include these manifestos

Please do not revert to childish insults, and a biased personal agenda removing these links, they belong their and represent Principles which I dare say are some of the most interesting, fascinating and creative principles.

Don't abuse your privileges here and force your agenda on this topic of transhumanism, all perspectives are welcome here whether you like it or not.

Dnagod 17:26, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

What makes you think transtopianism (transtopia.org) is not secular?

STOP removing these links, you are biased, emotional, unfair, unbalanced and lacking in neutrality.

These links are to stay, and you have no right to remove them. They are valid and legit links, Do not abuse your privileges on this project or you will be revoked.

Dnagod 02:55, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The man who invented the word Transhumanism (Huxley), was an open, avid and published advocate of state sponsored coercive eugenics, selective breeding, and elitist eugenic communities. Therefore you are wrong, and thus the specific issue of VOLUNTARY eugenics does NOT violate in anyway, shape or form, being part of transhumanism. You are wrong, biased, unfair, unbalanced, and lacking in neutrality. Transtopia.org and prometheism.net DO NOT SUPPORT COERCIVE EUGENICS in their PRINCIPLES, THEY SUPPORT VOLUNTARY - EUGENICS - READ VOLUNTARY. Forgive the capitalization, but I do that for emphasis, not to scream.

please stop removing these links, you are biased, emotional, unfair, unbalanced and lacking in neutrality. These are not personal attacks, these are stated facts that you have not read the prometheism.net web site.

These links are to stay, and you have no right to remove them. They are valid and legit links, Do not abuse your privileges on this project.

I ask you to bring arbitration and discussion on this fact. Your censorship, bias and personal agenda will not win. Go to prometheism.net right now and find one place on this site that says prometheism supports COERCIVE EUGENICS. you will not find it anywhere. Prometheism.net clearly states that it only supports voluntary eugenics. Read the sworn oath on prometheism.net

The Sworn Oath of Prometheism (front page of prometheism.net)

We Prometheans are voluntarily coming together to purposefully direct the creation of a new post-human species. A species with higher intellect, creativity, consciousness and love of ones people. A communion of intellect and beauty, for the simple reason that it can be done. This creation is what gives us purpose and meaning. No other justification is required for this program to advance our Promethean species.

Next I want you to read the Principles of prometheism http://www.prometheism.net/principles.htm

5. Total Freedom, Liberty and Self-Determination

Our Libertarian religious nation is founded on the principles of total freedom of speech (including offensive language and language which hurts peoples feelings), freedom of thought, the right to bear arms, liberty, progress, productivity and the pursuit of individual happiness.

nation is VOLUNTARY ONLY. We REJECT all totalitarianism and believe COERCIVE neo-eugenics is counter to the ideal of individual freedom. The promethean governments sole purpose is to protect the rights of the individual. We DO NOT wish to STERILIZE anyone or FORCE anyone to practice neo-eugenics.

DNA or genetic capital is the most valuable commodity in the universe. Our primary goal is to promote positive and voluntary neo-eugenics by channeling national resources to the best, brightest and most creative.

This is from the principles of prometheism.net Last Updated: 3/13/03 this means that prometheism is NOT FRINGE, it does not support the fringe philosophy of FORCED COERCIVE EUGENICS. Again the capitalization is not screaming, its meant to provide emphasis. Also my comments about you not being very knowledgeable about prometheism.net and transtopia.org are not meant as personal insults or personal attacks, but as an observation.

Psychological Egoism and Ethical Egoism

Psychological Egoism and Ethical Egoism

Sandra LaFave West Valley College

Psychological Egoism

Psychological egoism is the claim that people always act selfishly, to foster their own self-interest or happiness. Psychological hedonism is the claim that people always act to attain their own pleasure and avoid pain. Psychological hedonism is also called the pleasure principle.

In these notes, Ill give arguments against psychological egoism. However, the same arguments apply against psychological hedonism.

Is psychological egoism a fact (a true claim)? If it is true, ethics is in trouble, because most traditional ethical systems demand at least occasional altruism (unselfish behavior). If psychological egoism were true, altruism would not be possible. We would have to explain apparent (what appears as) altruism as self-interest. For example, we wouldnt say Mother Teresa is altruistic; wed say that shes self-interested. Shes using the poor to attain her own long-term spiritual goals.

In fact, people who think psychological egoism is true (such as Thomas Hobbes and Ayn Rand) often use it as a premise in an argument to deny the validity of traditional ethics altogether:

1. (Psychological egoism): People always and invariably act to foster their own self-interest.

2. Traditional ethical systems demand at least occasional altruism (non-self-interested behavior).

3. In demanding altruism, traditional ethical systems are demanding the impossible. (They might as well demand that people fly.)

4. Any ethical systems that demands the impossible is silly and stupid.

5. Traditional ethical systems are silly and stupid.

6. We should adopt a more realistic system, ethical egoism, which demands that we pursue self-interest.

But psychological egoism is a surprisingly weak claim. If it is false, then the above argument against ethics is unsound. Here are some reasons not to take psychological egoism seriously.

Critique #1: Psychological egoism is not true, on face value, in a simple, naive sense. That is, it's easy to think of counterexamples cases that falsify the generalization that all human acts are selfish, i.e., cases of people acting unselfishly. It certainly appears that people sometimes act in ways that are not in accord with their own interests: the soldier who falls on the grenade to save his buddies, the person who runs into the busy street to save a child about to be run over, etc. Psychological egoism is only true if you adopt what Rachels calls the strategy of redefining motives. That is, you insist on claiming that people are really acting selfishly even when they appear to be acting unselfishly.

But this strategy has two problems. First, if all human actions are self-interested, then self-interested actions become, by definition, identical with actions. That is, these two expressions denote exactly the same set of actions, and thus are substitutable for each other. It then becomes impossible to disprove the claim that all human actions are self-interested, because the claim, after substitution, becomes a vacuous tautology: All human actions are human actions.

Try to imagine what it would take to disprove the claim that all human actions are self-interested. The claim would be definitely disproved if we could come up with one human action that wasn't self-interested, i.e., a counterexample. But if by definition all human actions are self-interested, there can be no possible counterexample. If there are no possible counterexamples, then the claim all human acts are self-interested is not falsifiable. If the claim is not falsifiable, then according to the verificationist criterion, the claim is meaningless.

So the claim all human acts are self-interested is either tautologous (true by definition, and therefore uninteresting, like All circles are round) or unfalsifiable (and therefore meaningless).

Besides, even if the egoist still insists on claiming that all human acts are self-interested, the egoist must deal with the puzzling fact that some acts appear to be non-self-interested. Now the anti-egoist could say, Okay, I still think you egoists are wrong to say there are no unselfish acts. But even if there arent any, your position is no threat to ethics. There are still the self-interested selfish acts and the self-interested acts that appear to be unselfish. Saying all human acts are self-interested doesn't make that empirical distinction go away. And that empirical distinction is where ethics can start. Well grant for the sake of argument that all human acts are self-interested, and then simply say that ethics sometimes demands that people perform those self-interested but seemingly unselfish acts. The claim that all human acts are self-interested is no problem, as long as some acts appear altruistic. And they do.

Critique #2: Self-interest and interest in the welfare of others aren't necessarily incompatible. One might be perfectly self-interested and look out for the interests of others e.g., a shopkeeper who never cheats his customers simply because he knows honesty is good for business.

Critique #3: Psychological egoism relies on an oversimplified conception of human motives. Of course it is true that we often get satisfaction or good feelings from acting unselfishly. But it is not necessarily true that we perform unselfish acts solely for the sake of that satisfaction. P1 commits a fallacy assuming that given two events E1 and E2, E2 occurring after E1, that E2 was the intended result of E1. But everyone knows the following argument is not valid; its a kind of post hoc fallacy:

P1: E2 happens after E1

C: E2 is the intended result of E1.

Suppose, for example, that you are a soldier and you save your friend's life in combat, and you also happen to receive a medal for that. Call E2 your receiving the medal, E1 your act of saving your friend's life. It does not follow from the fact that you received the medal (or self-satisfaction, or good feelings, or whatever) after saving your friend's life that your intention in saving him was to get the medal. Similarly, it doesn't follow that if you get some good feelings or self-satisfaction after saving your friend's life that you saved his life in order to get those good feelings. You didnt save your friend in order to feel good; rather, you feel good because you saved your friend.

Another example: you see your child run into a busy street. A car is driving very fast toward the child. You see that you can save the childs life if you run out into the street and grab the child in your arms. Realizing this, do you now stop and calculate how much happiness youll receive if you save the child? Do you say to yourself, Gee, it would make me feel really good to save my child. So I guess Ill do it! No. You feel good after saving the child because you saved the child. You didnt save the child in order to feel good.

In general, you feel good when you get things you already value. You dont derive the value of something by estimating how good youd feel if you had it. Its goodness doesnt come from that; rather, your good feelings about having it come from the fact that you think its good, independently of whether you have it.

Ethical Egoism

Hobbes argued that psychological egoism implies ethical egoism. In other words, Hobbes claimed that the following argument is sound:

P1: (Psychological egoism or hedonism): People always and invariably act as to foster their own self-interest, in accordance with self-love, or the pleasure principle, etc.

C: (Ethical egoism): People should always act so as to foster their own interests.

Ethical egoism has never been a mainstream view in ethics. Here are some counterarguments:

1. The ethical egoist conclusion (people should always act so as to benefit themselves) not only does not follow from psychological egoism (the premise) but is actually inconsistent with it! The ethical egoist thinks we should pursue self-interest because we cant help but do so. But if we must pursue self-interest, as the premise states, then whats the point of saying we should? If psychological egoism is true, we cant act any other way. In other words, ethical egoism only makes sense if psychological egoism is false, i.e., if we have a genuine choice.

2. The premise of the argument (psychological egoism or hedonism) is highly questionable, for the reasons given in the first part of this handout. If you reject psychological egoism, then the argument for ethical egoism is unsound because its premise is false.

3. Ethical egoists think that people will be happiest if they look out for themselves and not concern themselves with others But is this where true human happiness lies? Many other writers e.g., Erich Fromm, John Stuart Mill, and most major world religions claim that as a matter of fact, people who systematically disregard the interests of others are not as happy as people who maintain caring relationships. So, for example, selfish Mr. Burns on The Simpsons isnt cant be be as happy as Marge Simpson.

4. Ethical egoists such as Ayn Rand often talk as though theres a conflict between my happiness and the happiness of others. This seems just false. The happiness of others is not inconsistent with my happiness; in fact, the happiness or well-being of others might be a necessary component of my happiness. Happiness is not a zero-sum game: its not like theres only so much happiness to go around, so that if I get some, somebody else loses some! This is whats wrong with Harry Brownes big red ball argument. Its clearly a dubious analogy.

5. It's not clear how an ethical egoist would act as a moral advisor or moral judge in cases where the egoist's happiness is involved. Suppose I am an ethical egoist, so I believe that everyone ought to act for his/her own benefit. Say Terry wants to have sex with you, and youre thinking about it, but you're not really sure it's a good idea, so you and Terry discuss it. Suppose Terry knows it would be better for you if you didn't sleep with Terry; but Terry also thinks it would be in Terrys interest if you did. Now you ask Terry what you should do. What answer does Terry give, supposing Terry is an ethical egoist? Remember Terrys view is that everyone ought to act to benefit him/herself. Does Terry give you the advice that benefits you or the advice that benefits Terry?

6. Some writers say ethical egoism is ultimately inconsistent. To be inconsistent is to be guilty of self-contradiction. So the argument against egoism is that ethical egoists must ultimately contradict themselves. Since self-contradiction is a big problem in logic, showing that someone is guilty of it is an excellent refutation technique.

To show that egoists are guilty of self-contradiction, the argument is: suppose everyone were consistently selfish (selfish all the time), and, as often happens in life, some misfortune arises and the egoist now needs the unselfish help of another. If everyone is a consistent egoist, the egoist wont get the help he needs. So in the interests of self-interest, an egoist must reject egoism, at least sometimes; in other words, the egoist must be inconsistent. The egoist really doesnt want everyone to be selfish all the time, because ethical egoism, if adopted universally, would lead to undesirable social consequences.

Interestingly, in Egoism and Moral Skepticism, James Rachels argues that ethical egoism is not inconsistent. You can explore that interesting argument yourself.

7. According to Rachels, the best argument against ethical egoism is its unacceptable arbitrariness. The egoist arbitrarily assumes his interests come before those of other people. But as a matter of fact, no one person matters that much more than others. Egoism is like racism. Racism assumes that the interests of one race count more than the interests of others, for no good reason (i.e., arbitrarily). Likewise, egoism assumes that the interests of one person count more than the interests of others, for no good reason.

How Egoism Might be True

This deep egoism would also be true if seeking the good of others were, as a matter of fact, the major and most gratifying source of happiness for people. Is it? Note that this question (What makes people happiest?) appears to be empirical, and thus resolvable one way or the other using ordinary methods of observation and experiment. Do you think it's really an empirical matter? If it is, what are the facts?

Ayn Randargued that there is a positive harmony of in-terests among free, rational humans, such that no moralagent can rationally coerce another person consistentlywith his own long-term self-interest. Rand argued thatother people are an enormous value to an individualswell-being (through education, trade and aection), butalso that this value could be fully realized only under con-ditions of political and economic freedom. Accordingtoamoralism,thereisnothingwrongwithego-ism, but there is also nothing ethical about it; one canadoptrational egoismand drop morality as a superuousattribute of the egoism.Ethical egoism has been alleged as the basis forimmorality. Egoism has also been alleged as being out-side the scope of moral philosophy.Thomas Jeersonwrites in an 1814 letter to Thomas Law:Self-interest, orratherself-love, oregoism, hasbeenmoreplausiblysubstitutedasthebasisof morality. But I consider our relations withothers as constituting the boundaries of moral-ity. With ourselves, we stand on the groundof identity, not of relation, which last, requir-ing two subjects, excludes self-love connedto a single one. To ourselves, in strict lan-guage, we can owe no duties, obligation re-quiring also two parties. Self-love, therefore,is no part of morality. Indeed, it is exactly itscounterpart.

[21]

In contrast, Rand saw ethics as a necessity for human sur-vival and well-being, and argued that the social impli-cations of morality, including natural rights, were sim-ply a subset of the wider eld of ethics. Thus, for Rand, virtue included productiveness, honesty with oneself, and scrupulousness of thought. Although she greatly ad-mired Jeerson, she also wrote:[To those who say] that morality is socialand that man would need no morality on adesert islandit is on a desert island that hewould need it most. The Moral Point of View

,Kurt Baierobjects that eth-ical egoism provides no moral basis for the resolution ofconicts of interest, which, in his opinion, form the onlyvindication for a moral code. Were this an ideal world, one in which interests and purposes never jarred, its in-habitants would have no need of a specied set of ethics, accordingtoBaier. This, however, isnotanidealworld.Baier believes that ethical egoism fails to provide themoral guidance and arbitration that it necessitates. Farfrom resolving conicts of interest, claimed Baier, ethi-cal egoism all too often spawns them. To this, as Rachelshas shown, the ethical egoist may object that he cannotadmitaconstructofmoralitywhoseaimismerelytofore-stall conicts of interest. On his view, he writes, themoralist is not like a courtroom judge, who resolves dis-putes. Instead, he is like the Commissioner of Boxing, who urges each ghter to do his best.

[23]

Baiers is also part of a team of philosophers who holdthat ethical egoism is paradoxical, implying that to dowhat is in ones best interests can be both wrong and rightin ethical terms. Although a successful pursuit of self-interest may be viewed as a moral victory, it could also bedubbed immoral if it prevents another person from exe-cuting what is in

best interests. Again, however, theethical egoists have responded by assuming the guise ofthe Commissioner of Boxing. His philosophy precludesempathy for the interests of others, so forestalling themis perfectly acceptable. Regardless of whether we thinkthis is a correct view, adds Rachels, it is, at the veryleast, a

consistent

view, and so this attempt to convict theegoist of self-contradiction fails.

Finally, it has been averred that ethical egoism is no bet-ter thanbigotryin that, likeracism, it divides people into two types themselves and others and discriminatesagainst one type on the basis of some arbitrary disparity. This, to Rachelss mind, is probably the best objectionto ethical egoism, for it provides the soundest reason why

Coming to America: The History of Mail-Order Brides – Utne Reader Online

Mail-order brides have deep roots in American history, dating back to the colonial period.

By Marcia A. Zug February 2017

Modern mail-order brides are often stereotyped as young foreign women desperate to escape their homeland, but there was a time when mail-order brides were seen as strong pioneer women. There have been mail-order brides in America as long as there have been Europeans in America but the course of time has changed the perceptions of these women. In Buying a Bride: An Engaging History of Mail-Order Matches (NYU Press, 2016) author Marcia A. Zug traces the history of mail-order brides in America from colonial times to the present.

To find more books that pique our interest, visit the Utne Reader Bookshelf.

"As Catherine looks out across the water, she wonders what her life will be like when she reaches Virginia. She knows that conditions will be hard, but life in England was also hard. At least in the colony, there is the possibility of advancement. The Virginia Company has assured her and the other women that they will have their choice of marriage partners. They have promised that the men are wealthy, or at least will be with the womens help, and that the women will have a share of this wealth. Catherine knows it is a risk, but she has been assured she can always return home if she changes her mind. Regardless, Catherine expects to stay. There is little for her back in England. She will marry a colonist and help found a nation."

The above thoughts illustrate what I believe one of the first mail-order brides might have felt as she traveled thousands of miles from England to settle in the Virginia colony. There is no actual record of the hopes and fears of these young women. Nevertheless, we do know that their arrival in 1619 was eagerly anticipated and desired.

Marriage was vital to the success of the colony. Wives were needed to create stable family units, produce and care for children, and cement Americas racial and cultural hierarchy. However, the difficulty was that few European women were interested in immigrating. In fact, female immigration to the colonies was so rare that when a group of forty women from La Fleche, France, began boarding a ship for Canada in 1659, the townspeople tried to prevent their departure because they were convinced the women were being kidnapped. Mail-order marriage helped resolve this problem. These women immigrated when others would not, and consequently, their presence was considered critically important.

The risks the early settlers faced were substantial. Most potential colonists had heard frightening accounts of disease and famine, and many of these stories seemed to indicate that women were particularly vulnerable. One horrific tale from Virginia involved a colonist who slue his wife as she slept in his bosome, cut her in pieces, powedered her & fedd upon her till he had clean devoured all her parts saveinge her heade. In the northern colonies, settlers such as the Puritans and the Quakers accepted these risks as the price of religious freedom, and as a result, these areas had little difficulty attracting large numbers of family groups. In contrast, the southern colonies, which lacked this religious draw, had a much harder time finding families willing to accept the dangers and hardships of colonial life. A handful of women came to the colonies shortly after the first male settlers arrived, but their numbers were small, and even fewer came with their children. Moreover, some families, like that of Sir Thomas Gates, sent their daughters back to England if their wives died. As early as 1609, a broadside (poster) produced by the Virginia Company of London demonstrated that the colonys governing body recognized the need to recruit women. The broadside was directed at family groups and specifically emphasized that both men and women were needed for the better strengthening of the colony. Nevertheless, despite such appeals, few families immigrated to the southern colonies. Instead, the majority of southern colonists were single men, primarily individual speculators and fortune hunters, who came to profit from Americas abundant land and natural resources and then return home. As colonial historian Julia Cherry Spruill has noted, these men were not interested in building permanent homes in Virginia or in cultivating lands to be enjoyed by future generations. They simply planned to make their fortunes and then return to England.

The transient nature of the southern population was problematic, and it quickly became clear that the lack of women was threatening the future of the fledgling colony. In 1614, the Virginia Companys lawyer, Richard Martin, spoke before the House of Lords and highlighted the threat posed by the colonys gender disparity. He informed the members, a significant number of whom had shares in the com- pany, that Virginia desperately needed honest laborers, with wives and children. He then recommended the appointment of a committee to consider ways to increase family immigration. Other members of the Virginia Company shared Martins immigration concerns. However, class politics ultimately prevented consideration of his proposal. Martin was only a lawyer and not a lord, so his requests, which went beyond legal advice, were considered presumptuous. One contemporary described his speech as the most unfitting that was ever spoken in the house. Consequently, not only were Martins appeals ignored, they resulted in punishment. The day after appearing before the House of Lords, Martin was arraigned for contempt. He was brought before Sir Randall Crew, the Speaker of the House, forced to kneel, and given following admonishment:

"The case was this a petition relative to the Virginia Company had been presented, and an order for the Council to appear, that he as their Attorney had represented himself with diverse Lords. That the House at first was disposed to listen to him with all due respect and love; that the retrospect of the Virginia Plantation was acceptable, for it had been viewed with the eyes of love. But afterwards, he has impertinently digressed, for it was not his place to censure and advise. The House had therefore brought him before them, and although many were his acquaintances, yet all now looked upon him with the eyes of judges, and not as private friends."

After Martins censure, the issue of family immigration was dropped, but the lack of women remained a significant problem. Finally, in 1619, the Virginia Companys treasurer, Sir Edwin Sandys, who now controlled the company, decided to address the issue. He warned his fellow shareholders that if immediate action was not taken, the colonys gender imbalance would soon breed a dissolucon, and so an overthrow of the Plantation. Sandys recommended sponsoring the immigration of single women because he believed their presence would make the men more setled [and] lesse moveable and decrease the number of men who, because of the dearth of women, stay [in the colony] but to gett something and then return for England. This time, the recommendation to address the colonys female immigration problem was met with approval. After hearing Sandyss suggestion, Lord Francis Bacon, a founding member of the company, immediately expressed his public support declaring it time to plant with women as well as with men; that the plantation may spread into generations, and not ever pieced from without. Shortly after Sandyss request, the company began recruiting single women to marry the Jamestown colonists.

In the spring of 1620, ninety mail-order brides arrived in Jamestown. Their arrival was considered a success, and the next year Sandys requested funds to transport an additional one hundred women. By this time, the company was in financial difficulties and no longer had the necessary money. However, because Sandys insisted that more women were absolutely essential, the company agreed to raise the money by subscription. Due to these efforts, another fifty brides were sent to Jamestown. Altogether, the Virginia Company sponsored the immigration of 140 mail-order brides. The arrival of these women was intended to reduce the number of male colonists returning to England, but this was not the only reason female immigration was considered necessary. Despite the femaleless wasteland described by Sandys, the colony did not actually lack women. America was filled with indigenous women, and relationships between the male colonists and native women occurred almost immediately.

As early as 1608, after disease and starvation wiped out nearly a third of the original Jamestown colonists, a large number of the male survivors began taking Indian wives. By 1612, the Spanish ambassador to England reported that between 40 to 50 Englishman . . . had married Indian women. He also informed the company that nearly all of these men had abandoned the colony for their wives villages. Only two years earlier, the entire population of Jamestown consisted of sixty colonists. Consequently, the number of desertions described by the ambassador was shocking. Just as concerning was the fact that these desertions seemed unstoppable. Virginia Governor Dale had already decreed that deserters were to be hanged, some burned, some to be broke upon wheels, others to be staked and some to be shot to death. This law had little effect, and colonial men continued to leave the colony.

Desertions contributed to the already declining population, while also undermining the moral justification for the entire colonial endeavor. Virginia settlers had rationalized colonization by highlighting the supposed differences between themselves and the countrys native inhabitants. Captain John Smiths 1607 report on the native population of Virginia epitomized this trend, characterizing the local Indians as cruel, irrational, vengeful, treacherous, and barbaric. He also accused these tribes of Satanism. He described the Virginia Indians as devil worshippers who prayed to idols shaped with such deformity as may well suit with such a god and claimed they practiced child sacrifice. Such accusations seemed to confirm the English colonizers belief in their moral and religious superiority. However, intermarriage threatened these distinctions.

Britains recent colonizing venture in Ireland had demonstrated that settlers were extremely likely to adopt the customs and manners of native inhabitants with whom they intermixed. One typical report from the Irish colony bewailed the number of Englishmen who in small time have grown wild in Ireland, and become in language and qualities Irish. This report also noted the paucity of Irishmen who do in exchange become civilized and English. Virginias colonial leaders worried that marriage to Indian women would lead to similar results. Specifically, they feared that intermarriage would cause European men to abandon their civility and become indistinguishable from the heathen savages. This fear was then further exacerbated by the perceived sexual availability of Indian women. In John Smiths 1612 account of life in the early Virginia colony, he wrote about his visit to one of Powhatans (Pocahontass father) villages and noted that in any of these villages, an Englishman could expect a woman freshly painted red with pocones and oil to be his bed fellow. Smith also detailed his own experience. He claimed to have been greeted by 30 young women [who] came naked out of the woods (only covered behind and before with a few greene leaves), their bodies all painted, some white, some red, some black, some partie colour, but every one different. He then described being invited back to their lodging where they more tormented him than ever, with crowding, and pressing, and hanging upon him, most tediously crying, love you not mee? Similar, although less colorful, accounts were provided by colonist and company secretary William Strachey, who declared that the local women were most voluptious and eager to embrace the acquaintance of any Straunger.

In order to prevent desertions to the native villages and lessen the attractions of native women, colonial leaders described white/Indian relationships as religiously prohibited. In his 1609 sermon, the colonial Reverend William Symonds railed against the dangers of miscegenation. Symonds cited the biblical injunction that Gods people in Canaan keepe to themselves, and not marry nor give in marriage to the heathen, that are uncircumcized, and he warned that the breaking of this rule jeopardized ones chance for eternal salvation and risked all good succese of this voyage. Symondss religious admonishment did little to stem the flow of desertions, and even within the colony, some determined men found ways around this prohibition. The most famous intermarried colonist was John Rolfe. In his letter to Governor Dale seeking permission to marry Pocahontas, Rolfe acknowledged the heavie displeasure which almightie God conceived against the sonnes of Levie and Israel for marrying strange wives. Nevertheless, he argued that this concern was inapplicable to his own relationship, because Pocahontas was converting to Christianity and, thus, their marriage would actually be furthering Gods work and assisting with Rolfes owne salvation. Rolfes arguments were persuasive and earned Dales endorsement of the marriage.

By 1619, it had become clear that neither religious prohibitions nor capital punishment was a sufficient deterrent against intermarriage. The company, therefore, concluded that the best way to reduce desertions and ensure the colony remained racially and ethnically distinct was to provide colonial men with a viable marriage alternative to native women. Understandably, the women recruited to fulfill this important task were chosen with care. They were not prostitutes, criminals, or beggars. In fact, out of the thirty-eight women whose social status is known, eight had links to the gentry. According to the company records, four of the women were the daughters of gentlefolk; two others had uncles and one cousin (once removed) who were knights; and the eighth was described as the daughter of Mr. Gervase Markham, of the Nottinghamshire gentry. In addition, the company insisted that all the women had been received . . . upon good recommendation.
