Economic Freedom – HATICE KARAHAN – Yeni afak – Yeni afak English

The Washington-based Heritage Foundation has been publishing the global Index of Economic Freedom annually since 1995 and putting the countries in order in this respect. If you ask what economic freedom is, the concept is grounded on the freedom of individuals to act as they wish in their economic preferences and the free flow of labor, capital, property and service in the country. The idea to measure the degree of this freedom stems from it being a critical element to achieving welfare.

And if you ask how this freedom is scaled, there are four equally important pillars in the Heritage index: rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency and market openness. Under each one of these sub-indexes are three other categories, also equally significant.

Namely, the rule of law is evaluated based on property rights, government integrity and judicial effectiveness, while government size is evaluated based on government spending, tax burden and fiscal health, regulatory efficiency on business, labor and monetary freedoms and market openness on trade, investment and monetary freedoms.

An average freedom

There are 180 countries in the Index of Economic Freedom and each one of them is scored on a scale from 0 (not free) to 100 (freest). Countries with a score of 80 and above are declared free, while those in the 70s are considered mostly free. If you score in the 60s, you are moderately free, but get anything below 60 and you are considered mostly unfree, all the way down to repressed.

Based on this, while the world's 2017 index average of 60.9 indicates a record high, we see that the global economy has just made it into the average level of freedom.

Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland and Australia, countries that we are familiar with from the other relevant indexes, rank at the top. Estonia, UAE and Chile, for example, are also among the top 10 countries having the freest economies.

North Korea maintains its position as the world's most repressive economy, which we would have immediately guessed even if there were no such index. North Korea, displaying a tragic state with its single-digit score over 100, is followed on that very long path to freedom by Venezuela and Cuba in the bottom three.

We ranked 60th

There are 49 countries in the 2017 index that have achieved their best scores to date, including Turkey. Thus, we see our score, which last broke its own record in 2013 with 64.9 and later dropped to 62.1 due to the 2016 index, rose up to 65.2 in 2017. While based on this, our score is slightly above the world average, we ranked 60th among 180 countries this year. Since we were in the 79th position the previous year, there is an obvious rise.

In addition to this, within the context of Europe in which we are included with an average score of 68, we rank 29th, slightly under the average from among the 44 countries in the region. While there are many economies such as Romania, Bulgaria and Poland ranking higher than Turkey, many countries from Spain to France and Portugal to Italy are among the European economies that are not as free as us. The most critical economies among our regional neighbors are that of Ukraine, Greece and Russia.

The whys and reasons

In order to understand why our economic freedom is at an average level, we need to look at the sub-indexes.

In this context, while our best score is at the level of our government's degree of freedom, we save the day with fiscal discipline. The second positive outlook is our open market sub-index which got a score above 70.

One of the categories that drag us down to the average is regulations. In this context, it appears that the troubles especially in the labor markets have had a negative impact. The rule of law, which we have long been discussing, is the category we scored the worst in. Let this be another reminder that in this category, which dragged down our freedom with a weak score of 51.5, institutions and the judicial system await urgent remedy.

Building trust is essential

The index's data set is provided through various points and effort is made to keep the relevant dates as consistent as possible. However, the cutoff date for all the calculations in question is the end of June 2016. Hence, the index does not include the developments that took place after this date. At this point, we remember the incidents we experienced right after this date.

When we look at what happened from then until now, it is obvious that we went through grave social and economic pains. Therefore, it must be noted. Surely struggling with 1,001 different troubles is challenging, however, we must also first and foremost fix the mindset. We see certain improvements in the majority of the indexes of economic confidence. For example, one other essential matter I indicated includes repairing the faith in the country's future and brotherhood in an inclusive way during these sensitive times. A beautiful future requires institutional repairs, primarily the law. Essentially, this is what we need to pay attention to if we want to strengthen both the justice and order in the community and our position in the global sphere.

To conclude, since our goal is to boost our economy, then the economy and all its subsets need to be rendered as free, as secure and as reliable as possible.

ExclusiveRep. Meadows: We Won’t Fix Healthcare By Replacing Obamacare with Another Bad Plan – Breitbart News

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER

Congressman Meadows (R-NC), chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, prefers Senator Rand Pauls (R-KY) plan over Speaker Ryans plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. He said told Breitbart News, We support the 2015 Obamacare repeal bill, and we support Sen. Pauls bill to fully replace Obamacare.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER

Senator Rand Paul, along with the House Freedom Caucus, unveiled their Obamacare repeal-and-replace plan that they argue will completely repeal Obamacare. Senator Paul said, We owe this to the conservatives across the country to repealto completely repeal Obamacare.

The House Freedom Caucus bill contrasts with Speaker Ryans plan that some congressmen, such as Raul Labrador (R-ID), decry as Obamacare-lite.

Meadows believes that the Ryan plan will only lead to higher prices and create new entitlements. Congressman Meadows said, The tax credits included in Ryans plan will create an entirely new entitlement program. He continued, We are concerned about a new federal plan that will only increase premiums and lead to higher prices. We are not going to fix healthcare by replacing Obamacare with another plan that wont work.

Congressman Meadows told Breitbart News, We need to expand health savings accounts (HSA), and allow health insurance companies to sell cheaper insurance. Allow states to sell insurance across state borders to drive down cost. For those without health insurance, we can allow small groups, companies, individuals and associations to create their insurance pools.

The House Freedom Caucus chairman added that a health reform package should create tax deductions for philanthropic care. Senator Rand Paul frequently offers free eye surgery for uninsured patients.

GOP leaders often decry there needs to be a transition to have after Obamacare repeal. Meadows said, A great transition period would be two years or less, and allow pre-existing conditions.

Republicans continue to disagree on how to dismantle Obamacares Medicaid expansion. The Ryan plan would phase out federal funds to expand Medicaid by 2020, while the Freedom Caucus plan would eliminate Medicaid expansion fully and then block grant Medicaid to the states.

Congressman Meadows told Breitbart News, We need to give states greater flexibility in handling their local needs. States that did not expand Medicaid like mine (North Carolina) should not have to pay for other states fiscal irresponsibility.

Congressman Meadowsheld that repealing Obamacare does not mean the end of reforming health care. He said, We need to remove the McCarren-Ferguson anti-trust exemption for health care companies and allow more competition. We also need to add more portability for your health care plan. There is no reason you have to leave your health care plan once if you lose or change your job.

California lawmakers press ICE for information about raids – The Mercury News

SACRAMENTO Leaders of the state Assembly and Senate on Monday sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the federal government, asking for detailed information about recent raids in California as well as for Department of Homeland Security immigration policies, including the treatment of young immigrants who entered the country illegally with their families as children.

The letter the latest in what promises to be a prolonged battle between California and the feds comes less than a week after Homeland Security released draft memos revealing an expandedpool of people it might target for deportation. The memos began to translate into policyPresident Donald Trumps executive orders for stricterimmigration enforcement and fiscal consequences for local governments with sanctuary policies.

California, meanwhile, is considering a controversial proposal to limit communication between local law enforcement officers and federal immigration agents, as well as other bills to protect or assist undocumented immigrants.

The letter from Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Paramount, and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Len, D-Los Angeles, asks for the number of people deported to their home countries in recent weeks as well as the crimes that made them a target for deportation; whether detainees were given access to legal representation; and whether ICE agents conducted their activities near schools, hospitals, medical clinics, community centers, courts, government offices or churches.

Despite saying hed only target dangerous criminals, President Trumps executive orders target practically every undocumented person in California, said de Len in a statement. The lack of transparency by ICE is creating havoc and confusion in communities across the state and that has to change. Its time for ICE to come clean on what theyre doing and how they intend to operate going forward.

James Schwab, a spokesman for ICEs field office in San Francisco, said the agencys guidance for enforcement at so-called sensitive locations, such as churches and schools, has not changed since Trump took office. He pointed to an ICE memo from 2011 the latest directive that saysthat enforcement actions should not occur at such locations barring certain circumstances, such as imminent risk to human life or suspected terrorist activity.

Schwab said about 1,500 recipients of DACA Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals have had their status revoked as a result of criminal activity or gang affiliation since 2012. The policy, he said, is this: Aliens granted deferred action from deportation who are subsequently found to pose a threat to national security or public safety may have their deferred action terminated at any time and DHS may seek their removal from the United States.

Independence Contract Drilling, Inc. Reports Financial Results For The Fourth Quarter And Year Ended December 31 … – PR Newswire (press release)

For the fourth quarter of 2016, the Company reported revenues of $18.0 million, a net loss of $10.4 million, or $0.28 per share, an adjusted net loss of $5.2 million, or $0.14 per share and adjusted EBITDA of $2.6 million. This compares to revenues of $14.5 million, a net loss of $7.2 million, or $0.19 per share, an adjusted net loss of $6.5 million, or $0.17 per share, and adjusted EBITDA of $1.0 million for the third quarter of 2016, and revenues of $23.7 million, a net loss of $5.2 million, or $0.22 per share, an adjusted net loss of $0.9 million, or $0.04 per share, and adjusted EBITDA of $7.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2015.

For the year ended December 31, 2016, the Company reported revenues of $70.1 million, a net loss of $22.2 million, or $0.67 per share, an adjusted net loss of $14.4 million, or $0.43 per share and adjusted EBITDA of $16.4 million. This compares to revenues of $88.4 million, a net loss of $7.9 million, or $0.33 per share, an adjusted net loss of $1.8 million, or $0.08 per share, and adjusted EBITDA of $25.4 million for the twelve months ended December 31, 2015.

Chief Executive Officer Byron Dunn commented, "I am very pleased with ICD's performance throughout the extraordinarily difficult 2016 fiscal year. Despite suffering the worst energy industry downturn in history, ICD remained EBITDA positive with substantial margins generated by working rigs. During 2016, the ICD team reorganized and streamlined, and exited 2016 with a much more efficient cost structure. True pad-optimal ShaleDriller rigs were the last rigs to go down during the downturn, and have been the first to return to work as the market recovers. Since the end of 2016, ICD has signed term contracts with tenors ranging from six months to one year or longer for six rigs, and 100% of its marketed fleet is now contracted. ICD will be running more rigs than at any other point in the Company's history. Driven by what we believe is 100% effective utilization of available pad optimal rigs across the industry, dayrates for pad optimal ShaleDriller rigs have now moved higher from trough dayrates. We are in discussions with multiple customers for the addition of three ShaleDriller rigs to our marketed fleet, including our final rig conversion, and expect to resume ICD's growth arc shortly as market conditions continue to improve."

Quarterly Operational Results

The Company's marketed fleet operated at 78.2% utilization and recorded 936 revenue days for the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to 64.7% utilization and 774 revenue days for the third quarter of 2016 and 87.1% utilization and 962 revenue days for the fourth quarter of 2015. Rig operating margins, excluding reactivation and rig construction costs, for the fourth quarter of 2016 were $7,543 per day, compared to $7,806 per day for the third quarter of 2016 and $10,419 per day for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Operating costs for the fourth quarter of 2016 totaled $12.1 million, compared to $11.2 million for the third quarter of 2016 and $14.4 million for the fourth quarter of 2015. Fourth quarter 2016 operating costs included $0.9 million of reactivation costs and $0.2 million of rig construction costs. On an operating cost per day basis, operating expenses, excluding reactivation and rig construction costs, were $10,681 per day for the fourth quarter of 2016, compared to $9,614 for the third quarter of 2016 and $13,298 for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Selling, general and administrative expenses for the fourth quarter of 2016 were $4.3 million (including $0.9 million of non-cash stock-based compensation), compared to $3.2 million (including $1.0 million of non-cash stock based compensation) for the third quarter of 2016 and $3.1 million (including $1.1 million of non-cash stock based compensation) for the fourth quarter of 2015. The sequential increase in selling, general and administrative expenses compared to the third quarter of 2016 relates primarily to the accrual of annual incentive compensation expense during the quarter. Excluding the impact of these compensation accruals, aggregate selling, general and administrative expenses declined sequentially over 8% between the third and fourth quarters of 2016.

Depreciation expense for the fourth quarter of 2016 was $6.2 million, compared to $6.0 million for the third quarter of 2016 and $6.1 million for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Drilling Operations Update

At the end of the fourth quarter, the Company reactivated two idle rigs on one-year term contracts. Since the end of the year, the Company signed contracts with tenors ranging from six to 15 months for five rigs operating under contracts expiring during the first quarter of 2017. In addition, ICD signed a one-year term contract for its remaining idle drilling rig, with expected mobilization during the middle of the second quarter of 2017.

Capital Expenditures and Liquidity Update

Aggregate cash outlays for capital expenditures during the fourth quarter of 2016 were $3.8 million. The Company's capital expenditure budget for 2017 is $14.1 million. The carrying value of assets held for sale at year end, after the write-down to fair value, was $3.9 million.

At December 31, 2016, the Company's backlog of revenues from contracts with original terms of six months or more was $42.5 million, of which $36.8 million is estimated to be realized in 2017. This backlog does not include expected revenues to be earned from six term contracts signed after year end. Adjusted to include these new contracts, the Company's backlog at December 31, 2016 would have been $75.0 million, of which $61.8 million would be estimated to be realized in 2017.

As of December 31, 2016, the Company had drawn $25.8 million on its $85.0 million revolving credit facility and had net debt, excluding capital leases, of $18.7 million. The borrowing base under the Company's credit facility was $91.8 million as of December 31, 2016.

The board hoard: your guide to the best new board games – The Guardian

Between Two Cities challenges players to work together to build their ideal urban environment. Photograph: Owen Duffy for the Guardian

Each month, we play a stack of newly released tabletop games to help you find the ones youll love. This time, were building our vision of an urban utopia, hosting a dinner where we poison all our friends and cruelly attempting to ruin other peoples parties by poaching their guests.

3-7 players, 20 minutes, RRP 34.99 Designers: Ben Rosset and Matthew OMalley

Theres something about civic administration that seems irresistible to gamers. Ever since SimCity first hit computer screens in 1989, players have spent untold hours tweaking tax rates and manipulating zoning regulations in an effort to construct an urban utopia.

The drama, excitement and sex appeal of urban planning havent been confined to video games, though. Over the years, numerous board games have given players the chance to build the city of their dreams. Between Two Cities is one recent example, and it puts a slick, simple and addictive spin on the well-worn theme.

Rather than focussing on a single city, it challenges you to build two one each in cooperation with the players to your left and right. Each round sees you choose a pair of building tiles from a random selection. Youll place one in each of your cities and pass the remainder to the player next to you, repeating the process as the game goes on. Over time, your cities will grow, incorporating new buildings that score points based on how theyre grouped together. Shops gain you a bonus if theyre arranged in a straight line to form a thriving high street. Parks are worth more when clustered together in little green pockets. Houses lose almost all of their value if you build a factory nearby, and, just like in real life, offices are at their most successful when located next to pubs.

Youll have to confer with your partners to place tiles in the locations that maximise your score, and the result is an engaging, evolving puzzle that mixes competitive and collaborative elements to brilliant effect. It may not be a deep or realistic simulation of city management, but Between Two Cities is light, quick and deceptively cerebral. I cant wait to get it back to my table.

Rather than relying on political intrigue, lines of succession or simple meritocracy, though, youve decided to seize power by ruthlessly poisoning all of your rivals. Unfortunately, theyve all had the same idea, meaning that your upcoming dinner party is going to rack up an alarming body count.

The game revolves around a set of plastic goblets. At the beginning of each round, you randomly distribute tokens representing wine, poison and doses of antidote between them. After a few turns spent peeking into cups, secretly adding tokens or moving goblets around the table, youll all have to drink from the one in front of you. If it contains more poison than antidote, youre dead. Youll gain points for surviving at the end of a round, for killing off rivals and for consuming more wine than anyone else, and, after three rounds, the player with the highest score claims the crown.

To win, youll need to carefully observe your opponents, maintain an inscrutable poker face and make use of a selection of special abilities that can tip the chances of survival in your favour. Its a fun, light-hearted concept, and it leads to hilarity and recrimination as each round sees players meet with an untimely end.

This isnt the only simple, sociable game out there though, and while it looks undeniably impressive, its expensive for what it is especially as its suggested UK price is 50% higher than its European equivalent. If youre looking for a bit of duplicity and deduction at your next game night, there are other options, and unless youre irresistibly drawn to Raise Your Goblets sculpted cups and gemstone-like tokens, its worth giving some of them a look.

Also try: The Resistance: Avalon, Two Rooms and a Boom

2-5 players, 30-45 minutes, RRP 19.99 Designer: Daniel Solis

Belle of the Ball is another game focusing on high-society soirees, and, while it may not rack up quite as many deaths as Raise Your Goblets, at heart, its every bit as mean. You and your opponents take on the role of hosts who have unwittingly organised parties on the same night, and youll each try to attract the most glittering array of guests to your own get-together.

In the centre of the table is a line of cards representing potential attendees, each of whom comes with a set of topics theyre keen to discuss things such as politics, romance, military affairs or cheese. Your goal is to group characters with similar interests together, and that turns out to be more about who you exclude than who you invite. Youll start the game with a set of regret cards, which you can use to reject partygoers and attract someone else to your gathering instead. Pick a character whos already been declined by your opponents, though, and youll acquire any regret cards spent on them, giving you newfound flexibility in selecting the most desirable guests.

It means that rejected characters become more attractive over time, and combined with a set of Belle cards, which grant you special abilities and new ways to score points it elevates a simple set-building game into something far more cutthroat, where youll constantly have to adapt your tactics to the changing state of the game.

Belle of the Ball benefits from a surreal sense of humour and a distinctive art style, and while its default mode is simple enough for children to pick up, it comes with some optional advanced rules which emphasise its more competitive edge. With two players it can feel a little flat, but more opponents bring greater scope for interaction, and more rewarding ways to mess with your rivals. It all adds up to a family-friendly game that manages to be fun for grownups as well.

But its the waterfalls youll really want to experience as you hike through the rainforest. La Coca Waterfall was once thought to harbor the legendary Fountain of Youth, and this hidden gem is still a salve to the senses. Experienced hikers should check out La Coca Trail, which crosses several rivers and waterfalls, where you can cool off with a quick dip. There are plenty of hiking trails throughout El Yunque, and some are less steep that La Coca. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that can handle the muddy conditions, and bring plenty of water! And while it rains up to four times a day here, these are warm and pleasant rain showers that bathe the rainforest in a dewy light and enhance that fresh tropical scent that you just cant get from a mainland winter.

Shockingly clear freshwater fills the Cenote Azul, which stretches 300 feet deep and hundreds of feet wide, causing a topsy-turvy effect that some divers equate to drifting in space! Exploring the cenote by dive will reward adventurers with glimpses of ancient stalactites, stalagmites and a few Mayan artifacts (the Maya believed these underwater caves were passages to the underworld). This is also a great spot for a swim or kayak in the clear waters.

And youll also want to check out Pekelmeer for its amazing flamingoes. As one of only four areas in the world where flamingos breed, Pekelmeer sees thousands of these pink beauties snacking on the ponds brine shrimp. The red carotenes found in the shrimp turn the birds even pinkier, causing the Caribbean flamingo to be the most colorful of its species.

Enter another world when you hop aboard a bamboo raft to weave through the Jamaican jungle on the Martha Brae River. Just a few minutes away from the town of Falmouth, youll feel like youve stepped back in time. During your three-mile journey, look for local fruits such as colorful ackee, breadfruit and calabash dangling from the trees that arch over the water. Your guide may tell you the story of the rivers namesake, Martha Brae, who local legend describes as an Arawak witch who lived on the riverbank and led Spanish treasure hunters to their watery demise. These bamboo rafts were once used to transport sugar up river, but they have since become a favorite activity of adventure travelers looking to get off the beaten path.

Steam rises and the mud boils at the Caribbeans only drive-in volcano, a stunning day trip south of Castries, St. Lucia. Walk along Sulphur Springs Park to get an up-close look at the active geothermal area that emerged around 35,000 years ago. Outside of the springs there are warm sulphuric springs that are safe for bathing. The grounds rich minerals include iron, calcium oxide, sulphur, copper oxide, carbon and magnesium. Rumored to have skin-healing properties, take advantage of natures own spa after a walk through Sulphur Springs Park as a great natural detox!

Curacao is known as a great scuba destination with plenty of shallow water reefs. Explore Playa Kalkinicknamed Alice in Wonderlandfor a particularly special dive. This rainbow coral wall is alive with giant lobsters, hawksbill turtles, spotted eagle rays and squirrelfish. Divers can explore the limestone-rich underwater cliffs and the panoramic views of ocean life at its finest.

Twin waterfalls emerge from the luscious green mountains after a 20-minute drive from Roseau, Dominica, and a short hike through the west side of Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Feel the mists tingle your skin as you debate which cascade to frolic under first. The higher waterfall called Father descends into hot springs and the lower waterfall called Mother flows into a colder natural basin. If you left your swimsuit behind, you can stay dry on the viewing platform and still absorb the serene landscape a perfect backdrop for envy-inducing vacation photos!

Royal Caribbean staffing pools with lifeguards – Travel Weekly

Royal Caribbean International has become the second major cruise line to staff lifeguards at its pools, a significant change in the cruise industry.

Starting this week with the Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean is rolling out a water-safety program that includes a lifeguard stationed at each pool during its hours of operation.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said all lifeguards have been trained and certified by StarGuard Elite, "an industry-leading International Aquatic Risk Prevention and Lifeguard program."

An indication that Royal Caribbean was preparing to adopt lifeguards came several months ago when StarGuard began advertising for lifeguard supervisors on behalf of Royal Caribbean.

To date, only Disney Cruise Line has hired shipboard lifeguards. Other cruise lines say they follow the policy seen at many land resorts where no lifeguards are provided and guests swim at their own risk.

Royal Caribbean said its program is a comprehensive one "to raise awareness amongst our guests about the importance of vigilance while enjoying water features on our ships." In addition to lifeguards, swim vests will be offered to children ages 4-12 and a water safety presentation will be made in the Adventure Ocean kids program as well as a separate session on water safety for teens.

StarGuard is an Orlando company that provides lifeguard training, certification and other services to theme parks and water attractions, among other clients.

Royal Caribbean said its water-safety program will be implemented fleetwide by June.

Growing up gay in the Caribbean, I was in constant survival mode – The Guardian

Beyond the postcard perfect beaches, a dark underbelly of intolerance brews in the Caribbean. Photograph: Getty Images

It is a strange thing growing up in an island called Little England. You inherit the legal system, the educational system and even the old English mannerisms and words. But you also inherit something far more sinister; a cornucopia of archaic laws and prejudices.

Imagine being a young child of six who realises that he likes boys. Now imagine this while living in a place where who you are, what you want to do and who you may choose to love is not only illegal, its seen as immoral. Imagine the impact that can have on a child. The absolute burden of knowing that you have to hide who you really are for the rest of your life.

At a party you hear 'shot the batty boy' and you cock your hand into a gun towards the guy who is even gayer than you

I love my country. Its beaches and its 365 days a year sun; I love the food, the humour and the easiness of the island. But there is a dark underbelly of intolerance, of religious zealousness and of rampant hypocrisy which if you are not strong enough will slowly kill you from the inside out.

I remember everything that was ever said that hurt me. Especially the words said by those I loved and who loved me. My father once shouting at my mother and saying: It is because of you and your mother [my grandmother] that he is like that. My mother years later telling me that she will never accept this when I finally officially came out to her. And even my wonderful grandmother once saying that she hopes I find more happiness than my uncle. My uncle, her son, is also gay.

School was even worse. Any slight movement of the head or hand could give you away so you had to watch and plan everything carefully. A few days ago I watched a video of Wentworth Miller, the gay actor, who said that every day growing up was like being in survival mode. It is as if he lived my life. All of us growing up gay in the Caribbean are in survival mode.

We defended ourselves against the religious leaders and followers who praise the lord by demonising that which they dont understand. Or as is common place in this island of masks that which they are but dont want to see.

We defended ourselves against the music. The music of Jamaica which called for gay people to be murdered and burned alive. Imagine being a gay closeted teenager and going to your first party and hearing the words shot the batty boy blaring from the speakers. What do you do? You bop your head, cock your hand into the sign of a gun and point it at the guy who is even gayer than you. Point it and humiliate the ones who dared to let their masks fall.

Here we live our lives through the eyes of others to be gay was bad but to be the parent of a gay son was worse

Growing up in this predominantly black society as a gay boy you try to take your inspirations where you can. But who? Mr Humphries from Are You Being Served? Perhaps Steven Carrington from Dynasty? Maybe Will and Jack from Will & Grace? But where were the gay men who looked like me? Who had my story? Who could understand that the life of a black gay boy in the Caribbean had its own narrative and its own tragedy?

I made it through school by never daring to dream of a life beyond quick fumbles in the back of a car or an existence of lies and excuses. I had partners but we all suffered from the sickness of invisibility and the scourge of self loathing. How could we possibly be good for each other when we were so harsh on ourselves?

My coming out was a night of high drama in my house. My father hugged me, told me I was his son and he would always love me. My mother seemed more concerned about what others would think. In the Caribbean we live our lives through the eyes of others to be gay was bad but to be the parent of a gay son or daughter was worse. You had failed. Your gene pool was infected. Your son or daughter was a disappointment. You get veiled sympathy and offers of beating the gay out of him. You get invitations overflowing to church. You get a shoulder to cry on and a willing ear to transmit it to all who would listen.

But today 25 years later I am seeing a change. Social media has helped young gay men and women in the Caribbean to know they are not alone. Amazing advocacy groups are increasingly popping up in Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana who are demanding that gay men and women have a voice and a right to be treated equally. The pond of role models is slowly deepening. We see ministers and diplomatic representatives, media spokespeople and doctors, artists and teachers increasingly being less guarded about who they are. We see people finding love.

I have seen boys and girls I have grown up with part of the survival mode clan living happily with their partners. I am getting an increasing number of invitations to weddings. Weddings! Growing up we never even allowed ourselves to think such a thing was possible.

Social media has connected those of us who thought we were alone; it has also given a voice to the cowardly and ignorant

But two things are consistent. One, to find this love and survival the vast majority of these brilliant, creative, passionate souls have left the Caribbean. And two, although social media has connected those of us who thought we were unconnected, it has also given a voice to the cowardly and the ignorant. Read the comments section to any article on the topic of homosexuality in the Caribbean at your own risk.

But these people are not on the right side of history. The younger generation is increasingly more accepting and able to think for themselves. My hope is that this free thinking will lead them on a path not to the dreaded tolerance but to acceptance of equality.

As for me, I just celebrated my 12th anniversary with my partner. My parents are my best friends having embraced my truth and embraced my partner. I silently work to push for equality at every stage I can. I am no longer in survival mode well not 100%. Like my home country I still have a way to go. But Im on the right route.

Caribbean First Ladies Urged to Put Their Influence to Good Use – Atlanta Black Star

Sheila Roseau

Antigua Observer Several women of prominence are calling for the Caribbeans first ladies and the spouses of heads of government to be allowed more prominent roles in the development of their countries and the advancement of various causes.

The call comes on the heels of the establishment of a Caribbean First Ladies/Spouses Network (CARIFLAN) to champion the Every Caribbean Woman Every Caribbean Child (ECWECC) initiative.

Sheila Roseau, the United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) Deputy Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said, It should be what they are comfortable with and what they believe in and what they want to champion.

She added, Its not for us to give them something to focus on that they dont want to focus on, but its for them to determine what their priorities are and what they would like to do.

Speaking on OBSERVER Radios Big Issues yesterday, Roseau was joined by former ambassador and United Progressive Party (UPP) caretaker Joan Underwood, who said there was already a model from which the newly formed CARIFLAN can take examples.

Getting recommendations just for you...

There is a grouping of African first ladies and they have tackled some extremely weighty issues from microfinance to food security. There is a benefit in extracting and adopting what has been done and suiting it for your own situation, Underwood said.

She also argued that the issues that CARIFLAN has agreed to address domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, cervical cancer, mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and trafficking in persons are not womens issues.

These are national issues. These are human rights issues, she said. These are economic issues and they are extremely impactful issues and these spouses do have certain privileges and certain access that will allow them to be impactful.

In the Bahamas, Sharks Are Worth More Alive than Dead – Hakai Magazine

Sharks, as a group, are among the most threatened animals on the planet, and for many species, overfishing is the driving force pushing them toward extinction. But the growing popularity of swim-with-sharks tourism has conservation advocates proclaiming that sharks are worth more alive than dead. And as a new study lays bare, nowhere is this more true than in the Bahamas, where shark tourism contributes more than US $100-million annually to the countrys economymore than one percent of the 327,000-person nations gross domestic product. But its a conservation win that comes with a hefty list of caveats.

In the Bahamas, many shark species that have been pushed close to extinction elsewhere have seen their populations hold, partly because the country banned longline fishing in the 1990s. Many of these sharks are species that divers cant reliably encounter elsewhere. Tourists can swim with tiger sharks off Grand Bahama Island, great hammerheads off Bimini, and oceanic whitetips off Cat Islandall rare species that draw tens of thousands of scuba divers each year. Further contributing to the Bahamas reputation as a shark diving hotspot is the fact that baiting (using food as a lure) is illegal in nearby Florida.

Our study found that the Bahamas has the largest shark diving economy in the world, says Andrea Haas, a research associate at the Cape Eleuthera Institute and the studys lead author. This is exciting because it demonstrates the stream of economic benefits that the Bahamas is receiving from conservation actions it took many years ago.

Longline fishing has been banned in the Bahamas for decades, and all commercial shark fishing has been banned since 2011, making direct economic comparisons of shark wildlife tourism to shark fishing impossible in this case. However, the value of all Bahamian fisheries exports combined is around$80-million, less than the value of shark wildlife tourism calculated in this study.

This study found the flow of tourists from shark diving is, proportionately, even greater in the Bahamas hundreds of remote out islands, such as Cat Island and Bimini, than it is in the countrys major centers.

These out islands are locations where specific charismatic shark species are targeted for exclusive scuba trips, Haas says. The injection of revenues into these out islands associated with this shark diving are felt much more profoundly there due to the lack of other opportunities.

Shark tourism is bringing in more money than shark fishing overall, but for many Bahamians theres a dark side to the switch: this money is going into different pockets. In many cases, the money is leaving the country entirely. For example, many tourists come on liveaboard dive vessels from other nations, rather than arriving on locally owned boats.

When local communities receive financial benefits from their natural resources, they are much more likely to recognize their importance and get actively involved in their protection, says Elena Salim Haubold, who works with the United Kingdom-based Shark Business, which seeks to help protect sharks through wildlife tourism, and was not involved in the study. Unfortunately, this new research demonstrates that a high percentage of all money spent on shark tourism in the Bahamas ends up leaving the country via foreign-owned tour operators.

Shark wildlife tourism is not the silver bullet as some advocates claim. Instead, it is just one tool in a broad toolbox, says Haas. But what the new study clearly demonstrates is that, at least for the Bahamas, shark tourism can outpace shark fishing economically. If that wealth can flow to Bahamians more reliably, it could even provide financial justification for future conservation efforts.

Before another jam-packed Malcolm Park beach soccer stadium, the Bahamas suffered a 4-2 loss to the United States of America yesterday and ended up in sixth place in the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship.

Although they fell short, leading goal scorer Lesly St Fleur said they gave it their best.

It was a great tournament. It prepares us good, but we still have more work to do, said St Fleur about the tournament, which prepares the Bahamas to host the FIFA World Cup in April at the same venue.

The World Cup is going to be a pretty higher level, so we have to be ready.

As the World Cup looms on the horizon, St Fleur said they hope to come back and put on a good show for the Bahamian fans. He admitted that they have a lot of work to do, but they just have to go back to the drawing board and get ready to compete.

I felt great for our home fans to cheer us on and I hope that they continue to cheer us on, he said. I hope that they come out in the World Cup and continue to support us.

St Fleur, however, said he felt he could have performed a lot better, although he posted 11 goals and was in the running for the golden boot. I have plenty work to do, but I will be ready for the World Cup, he said. In El Salvador, I had 11 goals and so to come right back here and keep on scoring goals and to help build up the team momentum, it feels good.

The USA broke the ice at 8:44 in the first period when Oscar Reyes got in a header from the left corner past goalie Torin Ferguson, who got the starting nod for the second straight game.

With 3:37, Nesly Jean tried to get the ball back to Ferguson but Alessandro Canale sneaked up on Jean and caught Ferguson too far out of the goal post to boot in the second goal for the USA.

The USA held on for a 2-0 lead to complete the first period.

In the first two minutes of the second period, the Bahamas blew a couple of golden opportunities to score when both Gary Williams and team captain Gavin Christie drew USAs goalie Christopher Toth out of the post, but neither were able to score on their consecutive respective touches.

With about four minutes left in the period, Lesly St Fleur got his chance to increase his goal scoring tally for the Bahamas as he had goalie Toth right on his side in front of the net, but his shot was a little too high.

Then with 20.2 seconds left, USAs captain Lewie Valentine was charged with a hand ball.

On the penalty kick, St Jean put the Bahamas on the scoreboard with his 11th goal in the tournament for a 2-1 deficit as the crowd roared their approval.

And with 2.5 on the clock, St Jean was awarded another penalty kick, but this time it went long as the USA held onto their 2-1 lead to complete the second period.

To start the third, 10:20 into the period, Joseph made an errant pass to Ferguson in front of the goal and Nicolas Perera was on the attack for the shot into the net and a 3-1 lead for the USA.

But on the next play, Christie got the free kick to cut the Bahamas deficit to 3-2.

The Bahamas got another break at 7:44 as Valentine got ejected leaving the USA short one player for two minutes.

Its beach soccer, its played rough, St Jean said about the physicality of the game. Sometimes you get out of hand and the judges pick up some things. We just have to be careful in the World Cup.

However, at 6:50, Jean was hit with a yellow card and the Bahamas failed to cash in on the USAs inefficiency before they got back to full strength.

All things evened, Toth goggled the ball in front of Christie before he booted in a goal near the half court line for a 4-2 lead for the USA.

With another three minutes left, St Jean got a pass to Christie, whose shot was deflected wild by Toth in the goalpost.

At 1:31, Joseph was hit with a green card.
