What Is Wrong In Washington? – CleanTechnica

March 9th, 2017 by George Harvey

By the early 1900s, express passenger trains were fast enough that their stopping distances were well over a mile. At such a distance, if the engineer of a train saw something blocking the track ahead, it was usually already too late to stop the train in time to avoid a collision.

Accidents were avoided with signals, which had come into use in the 19th century. An engineer who saw a signal to proceed could have a high degree of confidence that the railroad was clear all the way to the next signal, even though he could not see that far ahead. But if the signal told him to stop, there was often no telling what the problem might be. A train could be stalled. A bridge could be out. There could be a wildfire. Even though many tracks were supposed to carry only trains going in the same direction, in an emergency a train might be coming from the opposite direction.

Let me put a question to you. Suppose someone decided to ignore a signal to stop. Perhaps he wants to keep up with his schedule. Perhaps he suspects the signal was broken. He has a train loaded with passengers, but he ignores their safety because he finds protecting their lives inconvenient. Suppose you were on a train whose operator did this. How would you feel about that?

That image is, unfortunately, where the United States is on climate change, under the Trump administration. It is headed toward a possible wreck, against the signal. In fact, the person at the throttle is making every indication of increasing speed.

Some people take comfort in the idea that the government in Washington is under the control of conservative Republicans, who are acting in good faith for the benefit of the people of this country. As a person who lived most of his life as a conservative Republican, I can assure you that this is not the case.

Conservative Republicans have historically protected the environment. Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Richard Nixon all signed acts or orders protecting environments, ecological systems, and species. They were responsible for national parks, wildlife preserves, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA). If they thought science was undecided on an issue, they erred on the side of caution, as Ronald Reagan did when he was confronted with the possibility of a hole in the ozone layer. What we see now is the reverse of this aspect of conservatism.

It is not the only area of traditional thinking that is being assailed. They claim to have Christian values, but attempts to exclude Muslims show clearly that they understand neither the Constitution nor the parable of the Good Samaritan. They do not hold to real conservative ideas on human rights, which many in the party started to abandon in the 1960s, shortly after Eisenhower enforced integration in the schools. They do not show a conservative approach to the empirical use of financial resources, for if they did, they would not be attempting to gut the EPA, which saves the country 10times as much money as it costs. They are not interested in education, which I was taught was necessary foreffective democracy. They are not interested in truth, and, in fact, appear to be horrified by it. Instead, they choose to follow ideology blindly.

A short look at the group in power in Washington shows that they do not represent the people of the country. They do not even represent traditional Republicans. In fact, they do not even represent big business. What they represent is the small portion of businesses and people that profit from fossil fuel extraction.

To excuse their deeds, many of them look for ideological guidance to the writings of Ayn Rand. And here, I believe, we can see where they have gone wrong. Ayn Rand is taken to be a great proponent of competence, but if you take a critical look at her writings, you can see fairly quickly that neither she nor her protagonists has any idea of what competence is.

Dagny Taggart was a main character of Atlas Shrugged. Early in the book, as an officer of a railroad, she ordered an express train full of passengers to proceed against a signal without any knowledge of why the signal told the train not to proceed. She did not belong in a railroad boardroom because of some ability she might have had. She belonged in prison because she recklessly endangered peoples lives for the sake of a schedule and her own convenience.

Ayn Rand did not understand that competence requires understanding and wisdom, and that means experience and knowledge. She was unable to see that assertive self-assurance, in the absence of wisdom and understanding, is merely a self-promotional form of gross incompetence. So she wrote about things she did not understand, creating horrors that looked attractive to people who also do not understand.

Combining the mindless egotism of Ayn Rand with what is termed a Free Market is having disastrous results. What is meant by Free Market is clearly anything but free, as it provides a framework within which the most powerful forces can exercise their greed without reference to the needs or rights of others. This concentrates power into the hands of a very few. It is a very few that may be competent at organizing a business or engineering takeover of a political system, but it is not made up ofpeople who can competently run a nation full of people in a world in such a crisis as climate change.

Adherence to Rands ideology is sufficiently blind that it ignores virtually all else. While conservative Republicans may claim other important issues on their agenda, hijackers have made it all subject to the free market, and the conservatives have been sufficiently grateful to the hijackers for their partys takeover of the Congress, that they have allowed themselves to be led by them.

This sort of capitalism is very flawed in part because it places the emphasis on the near term typically, next quarters profits. It fails badly at long-term planning. And it fails utterly at putting value on anything that cannot be monetized in the marketplace. The environment only has value if it is in a park that can attract paying visitors. A species only has value if it can be exploited. Science and truth only have value if they contribute to short-term profitability. For the current government in Washington, dignity has no value, honor has no value, and grace has no value. Faith, hope, and charity have given way to the of a religion that can be monetized, the worship of Mammon.

Even as the cost of dealing with climate change is growing, the cost of electricity from wind, solar, and storage is falling to the point where they can compete successfully with natural gas. The question is not, I believe, whether the fossil fuels industry is heading to a derailment, but how many plants, animals, and human beings will be hurt.

A real conservative pays attention to signals.

Will: A wry squint into our grim future – Daily Commercial

By George Will The Washington Post

WASHINGTON -- Although Americas political system seems unable to stimulate robust, sustained economic growth, it at least is stimulating consumption of a small but important segment of literature.

Dystopian novels are selling briskly Aldous Huxleys Brave New World (1932), Sinclair Lewis It Cant Happen Here (1935), George Orwells Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949), Ray Bradburys Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale (1985), all warning about nasty regimes displacing democracy.

There is, however, a more recent and pertinent presentation of a grim future. Last year, in her 13th novel, The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047, Lionel Shriver imagined America slouching into dystopia merely by continuing current practices.

Shriver, who is fascinated by the susceptibility of complex systems to catastrophic collapses, begins her story after the 2029 economic crash and the Great Renunciation, whereby the nation, like a dissolute Atlas, shrugged off its national debt, saying to creditors: Its nothing personal. The world is not amused, and Americans subsequent downward social mobility is not pretty.

Florence Darkly, a millennial, is a single mother but such mothers now outnumber married ones. Newspapers have almost disappeared, so print journalism had given way to a rabble of amateurs hawking unverified stories and always to an ideological purpose. Mexico has paid for an electronic border fence to keep out American refugees. Her Americans are living, on average, to 92, the economy is powered by the whims of the retired, and, desperate to qualify for entitlements, these days everyone couldnt wait to be old. People who have never been told no are apoplectic if they cant retire at 52. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are ubiquitous, so shaking hands is imprudent.

Soldiers in combat fatigues, wielding metal detectors, search houses for gold illegally still in private hands. The government monitors every movement and the IRS, renamed the Bureau for Social Contribution Assistance, siphons up everything, on the you-didnt-build-that principle: Morally, your money does belong to everybody. The creation of capital requires the whole apparatus of the state to protect property rights, including intellectual property.

Social order collapses when hyperinflation follows the promiscuous printing of money after the Renunciation. This punishes those who had a conscientious, caretaking relationship to the future. Government salaries and Medicare reimbursements are linked to an inflation algorithm that didnt require further action from Congress. Even if a Snickers bar eventually cost $5 billion, they were safe.

In a Reason magazine interview, Shriver says, I think it is in the nature of government to infinitely expand until it eats its young. In her novel, she writes: The state starts moving money around. A little fairness here, little morefairness there. ... Eventually social democracies all arrive at the same tipping point: where half the country depends on the other half. ... Government becomes a pricey, clumsy, inefficient mechanism for transferring wealth from people who do something to people who dont, and from the young to the old which is the wrong direction. All that effort, and youve only managed a new unfairness.

Florence learns to appreciate the miracle of civilization. It is miraculous because failure and decay were the worlds natural state. What was astonishing was anything that worked as intended, for any duration whatsoever. Laughing mordantly as the apocalypse approaches, Shriver has a gimlet eye for the foibles of todays secure (or so it thinks) upper middle class, from Washingtons Cleveland Park to Brooklyn. About the gentrification of the latter, she observes: Oh, you could get a facelift nearby, put your dog in therapy, or spend $500 at Ottawa on a bafflingly trendy dinner of Canadian cuisine (the citys elite was running out of new ethnicities whose food could become fashionable). But you couldnt buy a screwdriver, pick up a gallon of paint, take in your dry cleaning, get new tips on your high heels, copy a key, or buy a slice of pizza. Wealthy residents might own bicycles worth $5K, but no shop within miles would repair the brakes. ... High rents had priced out the very service sector whose presence at ready hand once helped to justify urban living.

The (only) good news from Shrivers squint into the future is that when Americans are put through a wringer, they emerge tougher, with less talk about ADHD, gluten intolerance and emotional support animals.

Speaking to Reason, Shriver said: I think that the bullet we dodged in 2008 is still whizzing around the planet and is going to hit us in the head. If so, this story has already been written.

Biffy Clyro swap The Golden Rule for the Golden Can as they receive Tennent’s Lager award – Glasgow Evening Times

Scottish rock legends Biffy Clyro swapped The Golden Rule for the Golden Can today, as they became the second recipients of Tennents Lagers brand new award designed to honour cultural legends.

The Ayrshire trio were presented with the Golden Can at a local boozer as they celebrated the 15-year anniversary of their first LP Blackened Sky which debuted on March 10 2002.

Tennents relationship with Biffy Clyro stretches back 18 years to 1999, when the band played the T Break Stage at T in the Park. Biffy went on to play the festival a record 10 times, climbing the bill with each appearance before headlining the main stage in 2014.

The brand has moved Mountains to create the hand-crafted cans, which have been specially designed as a tin shaped tip of the hat from Tennents to Scotlands cultural legends.

The Biffy boys will now join Trainspotting author and literary hero Irvine Welsh as they enter the Golden Can Hall of Fame. Welsh was presented the inaugural can in January ahead of the T2 Trainspotting premiere for his considerable service to Scottish literature, stage, film and social media.

Tennents will award future Golden Cans to deserving Friends and Enemies from sport, music, comedy and other areas of Scottish culture over the coming months.

Frontman Simon Neil said: "Tennents has played a role in some really special moments throughout our career, from the T break Stage all the way to the Main Stage at T in the Park, so its cool to receive the Golden Can Award.

"We hold the record for the most appearances at T in the Park which is something were very proud of, and it was an honour to headline in 2014.

"Big thanks to Tennents for giving us the second ever Golden Can. Its amazing to join Irvine Welsh as a recipient, and we look forward to seeing who joins us on the list

Alan McGarrie, Head of UK Brand Marketing at Tennents, said: Nobody can argue that Biffy Clyro are one of the biggest bands Scotland has ever produced. Were Semi-Mental about them as they are of course one of the biggest success stories of our T-Break program. Their career truly has reached Biblical status, making them a perfect choice to receive the Tennents Golden Can Award.

The boys will now be joining Irvine Welsh in our Hall of Fame, so theyll be in good company. Well be handing out more Golden Can Awards to deserving Scots in the coming weeks and months, so keep an eye out for the next one. Mon the Biff!

Tennents is Scotlands favourite lager. The brand has been heavily involved in the Scottish cultural landscape for many years through multiple activities and initiatives across music, sport and more. Tennents has created the Golden Can Award to acknowledge other groups and individuals who have elevated Scotlands cultural standing.

26-year-old teacher stuns Liberals to win nomination to replace Stphane Dion – Toronto Star

Emmanuella Lambropoulos told reporters she was "really shocked" after winning the Liberal nomination. I didnt give up. Door to door. As soon as I knew I wanted this I worked really hard. ( Graham Hughes / THE CANADIAN PRESS )

By Giuseppe ValianteThe Canadian Press

Thu., March 9, 2017

MONTREALA 26-year-old high school teacher who was a virtual political unknown defeated a former provincial cabinet minister Wednesday to win the Liberal nomination for a federal byelection in a Montreal riding.

Emmanuella Lambropoulos and her team couldnt hold back their surprise at beating the woman considered to be the Liberal party favourite, Yolande James.

Im really shocked, Lambropoulos told reporters after her win in Saint-Laurent. I didnt give up. Door to door. As soon as I knew I wanted this I worked really hard.

The Liberals said 1,353 party members voted, with Lambropoulos capturing just more than 600 votes to defeat Marwah Rizqy.

The winners supporters credited the fact she lives in the Saint-Laurent borough and wasnt parachuted in by the Liberal party as the main reason she came away with the victory.

We came from the bottom up, said Petro Vouloukos, 22, who helped Lambropoulos secure her win. We were the grassroots. Not from the top up like Mrs. James.

James, a former immigration minister in Jean Charests Quebec cabinet between 2007 and 2010, had recently left her position as a political commentator for Radio-Canada to seek the nomination.

Former foreign affairs minister Stephane Dion held the riding since 1996 and it has been Liberal for decades.

Former foreign affairs minister Stphane Dion held the riding since 1996 and it has been Liberal for decades.

The riding is considered safe for the party and Lambropoulos is likely to become its MP after the April 3 byelection.

James, who was considered the heavy favourite, skipped out of a reception hall after learning she came in last out of three candidates.

Lambropoulos win is not without controversy as the man considered to be one of the strongest candidates, if not the strongest, was not allowed to run for the nomination.

Alan DeSousa, the well-known mayor of Saint-Laurent for the past 15 years, was not told why he was rejected as a candidate.

Many Liberal party members who voted Wednesday told The Canadian Press they were disappointed DeSousa wasnt on the ballot and said they would have voted for him.

Many people were upset, Vouloukos said about DeSousa not being allowed to run and the party seemingly favouring James. I think people being upset had an effect on the outcome but the most important thing is that she was able to mobilize the grassroots.

Lambropoulos was the only of the three candidates to live in the riding.

Her father, Athanasios, said her campaign started out with just him and her.

Our goal was to hit the road and get memberships, he said. We werent seen by the press; we were invisible.

Her mom, Matina, said Our headquarters was Grandmas living room.

The NDP has selected Mathieu Auclair to carry its banner in the Saint-Laurent riding, while the Tories have picked Jimmy Yu, who came in second place in the 2015 election behind Dion with 20 per cent of the vote.

The Bloc Qubcois has chosen Wiliam Fayad.

Four other byelections two in Ontario and two in Alberta will also be held the same day. Both Ontario seats are also considered safe for the Liberals, while the Conservatives are expected to retain the two ridings in Alberta.

The Liberals currently have 180 seats in the 338-seat Commons. The Conservatives hold 97, the NDP has 44, there are 10 Bloc Qubcois members, one Green party member and one Independent.

Dion quit politics recently and was later named ambassador to the European Union and Germany.

Note to readers: This is a corrected version. A previous story said the winning candidate captured 1,353 votes. That actually was the total number of ballots cast.

Liberal groups sponsor ‘resistance training’ against Donald Trump … – Washington Times

Hoping to convert liberals despair at President Trump into action, progressive groups are beginning to host resistance training seminars, saying the anger the presidents opponents feel can be channeled into a concrete movement.

Spurred by the massive showing at Januarys womens marches in Washington and around the country, the groups say theyre looking to arm activists to go beyond demonstrations and to be prepared to defend those snared by Mr. Trumps immigration plans, affected by the travel ban or in danger of losing health coverage under his Obamacare agenda.

Wednesdays Day Without a Woman protest was the latest example, with feminist organizers hoping to demonstrate the political and economic power of women opposed to Mr. Trump.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union is hosting its first resistance training on Saturday in Miami, with webcasts across the country to enlist activists desperate for some direction.

Right after the election the ACLU started receiving tons of money and email addresses from people who were asking us how they could get involved. What can I do? How can I do it with others? Faiz Shakir, national political director of the ACLU, told The Washington Times. The public has engaged in a game of Tag, youre it, and it has told us, the ACLU, that you are the leader of the resistance.

He said the ACLU, which has already taken to the courts to try to stop some Trump moves, figured it needed to go broader to say See you in the streets.

While its a new role for the venerable organization, its ground well trod by other liberal groups that are also ramping up their resistance efforts.

Progressive groups including MoveOn.org, Indivisible, the Working Families Party and the Center for Popular Democracy have held five Ready to Resist emergency telephone calls giving activists a chance to share stories of their anti-Trump protests and offer training tips on how to organize, recruit and gain the interest of media outlets.

Victoria Kaplan, the organizing director for MoveOn, set the tone in the first call, telling the thousands that listened in that the purpose of this emergency call is to prepare to stop Trump by stiffening Democrats spines and weakening pro-Trump Republican resolve.

In another call, Jennifer Epps-Addison, president of the Center for Popular Democracy, said the resistance was making an impact and highlighted how former House Speaker John A. Boehner predicted GOP lawmakers will probably not repeal Obamacare.

I think we have to make sure, and I know you all are, that our message to Democrats is that we cannot give an inch, Ms. Epps-Addison said. We have to resist this agenda at every place and point we can.

Others, meanwhile, have held educational forums in churches on the rights on immigrants, and groups like Showing up for Racial Justice have training sessions for White folks on showing up with accountability and commitment to actions organized and led by people of color, with a focus on immigrant-led actions.

Indivisible, which was launched by former Capitol Hill staffers, held a phone call Tuesday night urging members to rise up against the GOPs efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, which includes the defunding of Planned Parenthood. The group said the fight will help set the tone for the Trump administration, offering the chance to take some wind out of its sails early on.

The group also authored a guide for resisting the Trump agenda that says progressives disagree with the principles and positions of the tea party, but that there are lessons to be taken from its focus on grass-roots advocacy and refusing to give any wiggle room when it came to pressuring members of Congress to block the Obama agenda.

If a small minority in the Tea Party could stop President Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump, the guide says.

But Taylor Budowich, executive director of Tea Party Express, said progressives and the media have misread the success of the tea party movement.

They think it has to be about the tactics the tea party used because they think we couldnt have won on the issues, Mr. Budowich said, arguing the movements message of fiscal responsibility, limited government and economic growth appeared to a broad swath of voters. It shows how out of touch they are.

He said the tea party was more than an opposition force and rallied around candidates that shared its vision. I struggle to understand what this [resistance] movement stands for other than not liking this president. But that is a hashtag not a movement, Mr. Budowich said.

Mark J. Rozell, dean of the School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, said progressive groups believe they are building a sustainable political movement that will keep activists engaged and help avoid another election cycle of Republican gains.

But the question is whether hounding Republican lawmakers in public will translate into broader support and more votes for progressive causes and candidates, or will it fuel a stronger countermobilization of Trump supporters and others who dont like these tactics. Its politically very risky and could backfire ultimately, he said.

As an early success, groups pointed to the airport rallies that occurred in late January in the hours after Mr. Trumps initial extreme vetting executive order left hundreds of immigrants and visitors struggling to gain admission to the U.S.

Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly has said the rallies were more disruptive to the airports than the travel ban itself.

Activists have also disrupted Republican lawmakers town halls, drawing intense coverage from the press, which ran some of the confrontational clips on repeat loops last month.

Ms. Epps-Addison said one of her personal favorites came out of Arkansas when a 7-year-old boy challenged Sen. Tom Cotton on why President Trump wanted to slash funding for PBS and erect a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

You are onto something when even a child knows that you should not try to cut PBS to try to build a xenophobic and hateful wall, she said.

On the resistance calls, activists have touted the importance of interfaith marches and urged participation in cacerolazo protests in which people make noise banging pots and pans.

Julia Gallagher, of Michigans Peoples Campaign, got a glowing review for the creativity her group has shown. Activists were threatened with trespassing after a group including someone sporting a chicken suit showed up at Rep. David A. Trotts local office to demand a meeting.

But we got it on video, posted it on Facebook, and it has gone viral, Ms. Gallagher said.

In an upcoming call, Mark Anthony Johnson, director of Health and Wellness at Dignity and Power Now in Los Angeles, is slated to lead a virtual workshop in strategies and actions to build our personal and collective resilience for the resistance.

Why I’ve left my liberal comfort zone and found conservative friends – Christian Science Monitor

March 8, 2017 In November I had a conservative friend tell me about being berated by a co-worker who thought she voted for Donald Trump. She didnt actually say whether she had or had not voted for President Trump, but her co-worker blamed her for the election of Trump nonetheless.

In progressive areas like San Francisco and my hometown Berkeley, conservatives tend to keep a low profile. It grieves me that so many people feel that revealing their political leanings would be dangerous and that their fears are reasonable.

As the cofounder ofMoveon.org, I am steeped in the progressive culture. I often hear the argument that we must win by overwhelming the conservatives with greater numbers. I admit that Id be much more comfortable in a world where the voices of my progressive friends blaze our path forward, solving our shared challenges with or without the support of Trump voters.

However, true progress requires stretching myself beyond comfort. There is anotherapproach that I ask my progressive friends and everyone to consider "love thy neighbor."

Last week Nicholas Kristof wrote a New York Times op-ed about why we shouldnt otherize Trump voters.

Go ahead and denounce Trumps lies and bigotry. Stand firm against his disastrous policies. But please dont practice his trick of otherizing people into stick-figure caricatures, slurring vast groups as hopeless bigots. Were all complicated, and stereotypes are not helpful including when theyre of Trump supporters.

Mr. Kristof described the political cost of dismissing 63 million Americans, but there is a deeper cost. When we fail to recognize our common humanity we lose valued relationships. We also make our lives smaller, divide our communities, and fail to benefit from everyone's best ideas.

As the founding partner ofLivingRoomConversations.org, I have intentionally sought out friends with very different political beliefs. WithAllSides for Schools, I work to bring this practice to the next generation. I strive to better understand the political opportunities and challenges we face together. Despite the discomfort of challenging the progressive ideas that I hold close to my heart, I have found treasured friends who might seem like my polar opposite.

By connecting around our shared human experience we are discovering that there are opportunities to improve citizen representation in government that satisfy conservative and progressive values. Left and right efforts on criminal justice work has already begun to reduced prison populations.

Even in the area of climate change, meaningful opportunities are multiplying. Efficiency, energy independence through renewable energy, clean tax cuts all show promise for moving us toward shared goals.

When we care about each other and want to meet each others basic needs, much becomes possible. Even though I have not persuaded my good friend Jacob that climate is a critical concern, he cares more now in part because he cares about me. Also because I did not insist that he accept my view of climate science.

Instead I noted that I dont need proof that climate change is happening. Even if there is only a 10 percent chance that we are destroying the planets capacity to support future generations, I find that unconscionable. I dont allow my children to play Russian roulette.

This gave Jacob the space to consider the possibility that climate change is an unacceptable risk rather than react to a demand. And Jacob has caused me to see that climate change is the progressive end times story.

This is not a one-way exchange. I care about Jacobs concern that as religious conservatives he and his community are becoming marginalized. We have remarkably different beliefs, but we are learning to hold the tension of our differences and listen to each other with humility.

More and more of us are working to spark a movement of respect, using simple listening practices that open our hearts. I hope that honoring each others humanity will lead to more compassionate political discourse and elected leaders that we can all respect, even if they werent our first choice.

The parliamentary budget watchdog says it cant find billions in new infrastructure spending that is supposed to be in key federal spending projections released earlier this month.

The main spending estimates for the next 12 months were supposed to include $8 billion in new infrastructure spending, but a report this morning from parliamentary budget officer Jean-Denis Frechette says the documents only show $5.5 billion in infrastructure allocations.

The report lists multiple reasons for the missing $2.5 billion, including that the Liberals may defer some intended spending to future years.

For subscribers: To paint a rosy portrait of the Liberals federal budget, Morneau will have to get crafty

Another reason cited in the report is that the spending estimates are presented in such a complicated way that Frechettes office couldnt find the money.

The report is the latest in a series of studies from the PBO that have raised critical questions about the infrastructure program that is supposed to be a pillar of the governments economic growth strategy.

The report predicts that the Liberals will only be able to spend half of their planned federal infrastructure money this fiscal year.

ONE Nations Margaret Dodd will boycott the partys how-to-vote directive for the WA election after slamming Pauline Hanson a liberal puppet and a dictator.

Ms Dodd made the comments on ABCs 730 on Thursday night.

She said when she joined the party four weeks ago, she could decide her own preference.

IM SORRY: Is Hansons apology enough?

Ms Dodd has launched her own how-to-vote directive, telling voters to put the Liberals last.

Pauline, you are supposed to be listening to the people. If you cant listen to your own candidates, what chance have the people got? she told the program.

Dont be so dishonest, dont pretend that you are about something and then go and do deals with the Liberals unless you are going to be upfront and tell your candidates before they join that you are just a Liberal puppet.

Pauline Hanson is facing a revolt in WA. Picture: Colin Murty The AustralianSource:News Corp Australia

It makes me feel as though I have been lied to.

Ms Dodd said if One Nation leader Senator Hanson wasnt being honest with her own party, how could voters trust her.

It makes me feel that the party I have joined is dishonest and their only answer to any criticism is, you are disendorsed, suck it up or leave and you are not working as team.

Its very hard to work as a team when you are working in a dictatorship.

In a response to the ABC, Senator Hanson said Ms Dodds could leave the party.

There is still time for Ms Dodd to resign as a One Nation candidate and run as an independent, she said.

I certainly wouldnt stand in the way of her leaving the party, in fact, Id welcome it.

One Nation?s Western Australian candidates are a colourful bunch, to say the least, and the surge of populist politics among Australian voters may see some of them elected. In a talk show-style run-down from Labor Senator Sam Dastyari, six of Pauline Hanson?s candidates were mocked for being some combination of racist, homophobic, conspiracy theorist, or religious zealotry. Despite the far-right party?s poll numbers taking a dive compared to federal trends, the party was projected to win three seats and possibly the balance of power. Credit: Sam Dastyari via Storyful

Liberal candidates receive bizarre death threat posted to home addresses – WAtoday

Three Liberal MPs have reportedly received anonymous death threats through their personal addresses.

WA Liberal MP and member for the North Metropolitan region Peter Katsambanis received one of the letters when checking the mailbox of his Hillarys home on Thursday morning.

The letter was typed on a slip of paper, and read:

"this is a warning to both you and your family, you stuffed up my life and my businessthrough your partys behaviour. so now everytime you hear a bang or you think someone is watching you, it will be us. women children we will get them [sic]."

The threat reportedly 'visibly rattled' the MP, who has three young children.

Mr Katsambanis said he didn't know how the author of the note obtained his address, but he would not let the note distract from his campaign.

"Obviously whoever sent it knew it would arrive the week of the election, so it's clear they are trying to distract me and my campaign from working hard in the final days to win the seat of Hillarys back for the Liberal Party," he said.

"Nothing will distract me and my committed local team from winning this important campaign."

A Liberal Party spokesman said two other candidates in both the upper and lower houses had also received the letters.

He said he expected more candidates would find letters when they returned home, and said nothing of such a threatening nature had happened in previous campaigns.

The letters have been reported to the police dignitary protection unit, and WA Police are investigating.

Liberal backbenchers defy cabinet wishes and vote to enact genetic discrimination law – CBC.ca

Liberal backbench MPs joined forces with opposition partiesWednesday evening to reject attempts by the government to gut agenetic discrimination bill, overwhelmingly passing the legislation and defying the wishes of cabinet.

Recently retired Liberal senator Jim Cowan watched from the viewing gallery as 222 MPs voted in favour of his legislation, something he has long fought for through successive parliamentary sessions.

All cabinet ministers and most parliamentary secretaries in attendance voted against the bill. Only four Liberal backbenchers sided with the government, a rare displayof disunity within the Grit ranks.

Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybouldwas opposed to the bill andsaid she believes the legislation is unconstitutional as it could infringe on the provinces' right to regulate the insurance industry.

Bill S-201 will add genetic characteristics as a protected ground under the Canadian Human Rights Act, introducepenalties for discrimination, and forbid employers from subjecting job applicants to a genetic test.

The legislation will also allow people to refuse to disclose the results of a genetic test to anybody. Medical experts have said the legislation is necessary to counter the fears associated with potentially life-saving genetic testing, which could produce resultsthat would help doctors better tailor health treatments.

A breach of the law could result in a fine of up to $1 million, or five years behind bars.

Aspreviously reported by CBC NewsTuesday, AnnaGainey, president of thefederal Liberals, penned a letter during the last election promising protections against genetic discrimination if elected.

Some have suggested the Liberal flip-flop was the result ofaggressivelobbying tactics by the insurance industry.

Theindustryhas not hidden its opposition to Cowan's private member'sbill, a piece of legislation that easily passed the Senate last April and the House of Commons justice committee inDecember.

"The life and health insurance industry is extremely disappointed that Bill S-201 was passed today in the House of Commons without significant amendment.

"The industry agrees with the federal government's position as expressed by the prime minister and the minister of justice, as well as a number of provinces, that an important element of the bill is unconstitutional," Wendy Hope, a spokesperson for theCanadian Life and Health Insurance Association, said in an emailed statement to CBC News after the vote.

The federal government has to consider multiple factors when making decisions, Trudeau said Wednesday ahead of the vote, noting it needs to ensure it is defending the rights of Canadians and upholding their freedom from discrimination.

It also has to defend the Constitution and the balance between federal and provincial jurisdictions, he added.

"The government has taken a position that one of the elements in the proposed bill is unconstitutional," Trudeau told a news conference.

"That is the recommendation we had and the government position is to vote against that particular ... element in the bill."

The Liberal government hadproposed stripping the bill of everything except the power to make genetic characteristics a prohibited ground of discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act, but those amendments were rejected Wednesday evening.

The bill has now cleared both the House of Commons and the Senate but will only become law when it receives royal assent, which could take place in the next few days.

Her son called her liberal politics ‘intolerant.’ Here’s how she started listening to the other side. – Washington Post

The online platform Bring It to The Table facilitates candid conversations with a broad range of people on highly charged issues. In this video, participants discuss if equal opportunity exists. (Video: Talking Eyes Media)

Thewake-up call she needed came from her 17-year-old son.

It was the middle of the Obama administration, and Julie Winokur, a self-described liberal, was so frustrated withwhat she saw as Republican obstructionism that she would immediately dismiss any argument from the right. Then one day, her own child flipped her narrative. He told her she wasthe most politically intolerant person he knew.

If the other side had a good idea, you wouldnt know because youre not listening, she said he told her. I realized in that moment that I was as responsible as the people I was pointing fingers at. You have to take ownership of your own contribution to the negativity.

That was 2012, at the height of the tea party movement and in the midstof that years presidential election, when itfelt like the partisanship and rancor couldnt get worse. Her sons criticisminspired her to stop lamenting it andinstead try to fix it.

[He dramatically changed his views on gay marriage. Heres how he says the nation can come together.]

So Winokur, a documentary filmmaker in New Jersey, set out on a cross-country journey to meetpeople of different ideologies to discuss divisiveissues. Carting a square folding table and a navy tablecloth with patriotic stars, she endeavored to take her sons advice and really listen to others viewpoints. She wantedto get beyond talking points and regurgitated soundbites to discoverwhy people who see things so differently from her believe what they do.

She couldnt have known then how novel that concept would seem by the next presidential election.

She took her table to towns big and small, gathering a diverse cross section of Americans to interview. Sheeven set it up outside the Democratic and Republican national conventions that summer.

The online platform Bring It to The Table facilitates candid conversations with a broad range of people on highly charged issues. In this video, participants discuss their views on immigration. (Video: Talking Eyes Media)

I always saw this as the citizens antidote to politicians. Its taboo to ask people about their politics, but after being on the road and having many, many people who want to share, they are much more rationale and reasonable than we assume them to be, Winokur said. When you preface something as an opportunity to have a sober conversation where people can share what they believe, its amazing how many people are empowered to help other people with what theyve experienced.

In that spirit, during last years presidential election, she took her finished film project, Bring it to the Table, to college campuses around the country to spread her message about civil discourse. Since shed embarked onher own self-discovery to understand the other side, the national political dialogue had further deteriorated.

In her presentations, Winokur teaches students how to frame questions and engage political others without being confrontational. She tells them to never flatly tell a person their ideas are wrong. Instead, she advises theyask the personwhat experiences theyve had that shaped their opinions on a particular issue. If there wasnt a personal experience that led them to their opinion, she said a follow-up could be asking what they might have read or heard that led them to their conclusion.

Then shell take out her table and invite students to try it themselves. Sometimes she steps in to facilitate the dialogue, while other times she has the students engage with each other.

The goal isnt to change someones mind, but rather to get people thinking more deeply about where their beliefs come from and, in turn, give the questioner a more well-rounded perspective of opposing views.

We regurgitate things, we have a lazy way of analyzing information, we jump on the bandwagon of simplistic language, she said. The primary breakdown is the lack of shared information; theres a huge breakdown because were gettingtotally different information. When you dont share presumed facts, the conversation isnt even. Youre in different rooms pretending youre in the same room talking the same language when youre not.

She had hoped to take a break after the election, but almost immediately after Donald Trumps victory there was suddenly high demand for getting Democrats and Republicans talking to each other. And with the rise of hate crime incidents on college campuses, shes been called in by university administrators scrambling to bridge divides they hadnt previously acknowledged, she said.

She has personally learned through this process how to separate an individualfrom the candidate they voted for; to see them as American citizens rather than political adversaries. Healing the countrys deep political divide wont happen overnight, but she believes that having these conversations is the only way forward.

You cant solve a problem unless you bring it out in the open, she said. I thought it was so bad five years ago, and then it got worse. And were in a moment where it could get even worse. I think its a long game. This is an ugly moment that will get uglier, but you cant remedy something unless you air it, unless youre honest about it.

A Struggle Back to Financial Independence After a Brain Injury – The Good Men Project

On a beautiful June day in 2009, Harvey was riding his motorcycle up the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Malibu as he had many times before. He enjoyed the scenery and the feel of the open road. However, he has almost zero memory of this particular day.

As he neared the Malibu Pier, a woman driving a sedan ahead of him suddenly made an illegal U-turn turning directly into his motorcycle. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet that surely saved his life. The highway was shut down and Harvey was airlifted to UCLA hospital where he spent the next two months in a coma.

Harvey had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) along with many physical injuries, and he would spend the next six months in hospitals. From UCLA he was transferred to Kindred Hospital in Culver City, and then to the Bakersfield Centre for Neuro Skills residential program.

It was in those first few weeks while Harvey was in a coma that his independence and civil rights would be terminated through a court-appointed conservatorship.

Harvey and his wife Sheila had been married for 16 years and had a six-year-old daughter. Having been born into privilege, Harvey had considerable wealth that he had not co-mingled with his wifes accounts. Additionally, Harvey and Sheila had never prepared a will, power of attorney, or health care directive. Harvey felt that he was a healthy 40-year-old, and he would handle those legal things when he was older.

Sheila and their daughter were living in their family home, where she was responsible for a hefty mortgage, even though she had limited access to Harveys money. She hired an attorney and applied for conservatorship of Harvey and his assets. The case was heard by Judge Reva Goetz, who has handled such famous conservatorship cases as Britney Spears and Mickey Rooney.

Sheila was denied conservatorship over Harvey because they had recently separated and were living under different roofs. Even though she immediately rushed to his side in the hospital and resumed her role as his wife, the court decided that they couldnt be certain whether or not Harvey would want Sheila to have continued access to his money.

Eventually, Harveys father and his attorney were awarded co-conservatorship and were able to pay general bills such as real estate and income taxes, utilities, groceries, etc. Harvey would eventually be awarded a monthly allowance to spend on whatever he wanted, making him feel like he was being treated like a child.

Once youve been put into a conservatorship, you cant hire an attorney, so one is appointed for you by the court. This attorney is called a Probate Volunteer Panel (PVP) attorney. Harveys PVP attorney bragged at an initial meeting with Harvey and the family that she enjoyed causing friction between husbands and wives. She felt it was her duty to decide what was best for her client (Harvey) no matter what he or his family members might say to the contrary.

Harvey had a hearing every six months or so to monitor how things were going. He was supposed to be advised by his PVP attorney, however, she kept falsely telling the court that Harvey wanted a continuance of the conservatorship. Harvey wanted his wife Sheila to be conservator, but the PVP attorney would not allow it, and argued for the continued humiliation of the court-monitored allowance.

At the hearings, the lawyers which by this point consisted of an attorney for his wife, an attorney for his father, Harveys PVP attorney, and eventually a court-appointed attorney for his minor child (known as guardian ad litem) and judge would talk about him as if he were a child (because basically without any of his rights, he sort of was) and they would never refer to him by name only as the conservatoree. Harvey said it was very dehumanizing to be treated this way.

As Harvey began getting better and better, it was becoming obvious that the conservatorship had to come to an end, but doing so was harder done than said. He had to have a capacity declaration performed by a physician. The problem is that when a large amount of money is at stake, doctors are reluctant to say yes, because if they said yes and he lost it all the next day, the doctors decision would be questioned.

Eventually, Judge Goetz gave him the name of a specific doctor that she trusted. Harvey would endure two days of rigorous testing, and in January 2011, the doctor eventually wrote a declaration that Harvey was responsible enough to control his own life. In March of 2011, the judge terminated the conservatorship and Harvey was once again granted all of his civil rights. After the hearing was over, the court reporter approached Harvey and told him she had sat in on thousands of cases like his, and his was only the third one she had ever seen terminated it is that rare to have a conservatorship overturned.

However, his nightmare did not end there.

The court-appointed PVP attorney was supposed to charge at a reduced rate; however, she solicited the judge to bill at her full rate, and was granted permission. This frustrated Harvey, as he felt the lawyer really never had his best interests in mind. Harvey had to file for separate counsel to fight the fee petition, which added two more attorneys fees. In addition to his PVP attorneys fees, he also received a bill from his fathers attorney, the attorney who was acting as co-conservator, the guardian ad litem for his daughter, as well as his wifes attorney despite the fact that she had dropped her petition to be named conservator 18 months prior. Harvey had to pay legal fees, bonding fees, and mandatory accounting fees.

In total, this cost him just over $1 million dollars all because Harvey did not know he should have a durable power of attorney for health care and financial matters which created a situation where others took advantage of his health crisis.

Right after the conservatorship was lifted, Harvey told Sheila he wanted to go to Vegas and gamblebecause it was his money, damnit! She looked at him and said, NOT WITHOUT A WILL FIRST! So in April 2011, Harvey wrote a holographic (handwritten) will in his own handwriting on a piece of paper that said, Everything goes to my wife. Shortly afterwards, he hired a law firm to implement all of their trusts, wills, power of attorney, etc.

Harvey wants everyone to understand the importance of having a durable power of attorney drawn up NOW, no matter your age or health because you never know when life takes a drastic turn like Harveys did. This durable power of attorney is a simple form you file with your attorney for a few hundred dollars, and it directs who is responsible for you and your estate should you become incapacitated. Had he had one, it would have saved him the humiliation of losing his civil rights, as well as causing his loved ones time and grief and of course $1 million in attorney and other fees.

Mountain bike champ Jenny Blair hitting the road for Oceania Championships – The Sydney Morning Herald

Jenny Blair should be racing in the Oceania Mountain Bike Championships in Toowoomba this weekend, but decided a babysitter is cheaper than a flight to Queensland.

Instead the Canberran will compete in her back yard on Friday at the Oceania Road Championships, to be raced on the Cotter Uriarra loop.

Blair hails from Ireland where she won a national mountain bike cross-country marathon title, a feat she matched in Australia, and is looking forward to racing on a familiar route on Friday.

"I'm trying to get back to that elite fitness and I ride the loop twice a week so it's very familiar. It's called extras to the locals because it's the extra loop after brunch on Saturday," Blair said.

"However it's three laps on Friday which is about 100km, so that's a lot different to training over it once, but there's no expectation on me and I'm just happy to get to the start line.

"There are some really good riders in strong teams and I'm riding by myself, so I just need to be smart and sometimes it's just luck, other times you need the fitness to follow the moves."

After giving birth last year, Blair is getting back into the competitive swing of things and said she simply couldn't pass up racing in such a prestigious event so close to home.

"I'm a mountain biker but I still ride most mornings with the Canberra Cycling Club. I'm racing on Friday because it's on my doorstep, that and and a babysitter is cheaper than flying to Toowoomba," Blair said.

"My fitness is good considering I haven't raced over the summer and that my 10-month-old dictates my training, but he comes along in the back seat sometimes."

Women's favourite is Lucy Kennedy took out the individual time trial on Thursday after negotiating a difficult course at Tidbinbilla National Park.

The 28-year-old National Capital Tour yellow jersey winner admitted she was surprised when drug testers told her they needed a sample.

"The drug testers came along and said 'you've won, now come and get tested', I guess that was my prize," Kennedy laughed.

"It was a big surprise because I didn't think I'd gone that well. It's a hard course and it's never a good feeling coming off, but I descended really well and I climbed well so it all just came together," Kennedy said.

Sean Lake took out the men's time trial on Thursday with the teams event to be raced on Saturday.

Australia dominate day one of Oceania Road Cycling Championships – Insidethegames.biz

Australia emphatically won all six gold medals in the time trial races on the opening day of the Oceania Road Cycling Championships in Canberra today.

Sean Lake retained his title in the men's elite time trial after storming to the gold medal, winning by nearly a minute.

The 25-year-old crossed the line in a time of 54 min 32.7sec after dominating the race around the 41 kilometres course.

Another Australian, Ben Dyball, took second in 55:25.4 while the podium was completed by New Zealands Hamish Bond, a two-time Olympic gold medallist rower, in 55:32.1.

Lucy Kennedy added a second gold medal for the hosts when she edged the women's elite race in a close battle, with the top three separated by just 17sec.

The 28-year-old completed the 25km course in 40:4.2, edging compatriot Rebecca Mackey, who took second place in 40:15.1.

An Australia one-two-three was then complete when Lisen Hockings crossed the line in third in 40:20.9.

"This is my first title and it feels like a nice reward for a lot of hard work," said Kennedy.

"Fourth place is hard to take, being so close to a podium.

"I was certainly hoping to make the podium this year and to take the win is extra special.

"The first half was much easier with a lot of downhill, but with such a tough return judging your pace is difficult.

"Conditions were great and a hilly time trial course suits me well so I took advantage of the climbs which I'm sure is where I made up time."

Australian dominance then filtered down to under-23 and under-19 categories.

A close battle saw Jaime Gunning snatch gold in women's under-23 race in a time of 41:6.3, just 1.4sec ahead of Mikayla Harvey of New Zealand.

Harvey was forced to settle for silver in 41:07.7 while she was joined on the podium by Madeline Park, also of New Zealand, who took bronze in 41:45.1.

Australia's Liam Magennis produced a stunning ride to win the under-23 men's crown, as he improved on his fourth place finish in 2016 to take the gold medal in 42:57.7.

Magennis was joined on the podium by fellow Australians Jason Lea and Cyrus Monk who took second and third, in 43:26.3 and 43:39.4, respectively.

In the under-19 women's time trial Australia's Maeve Moroney-Plouffe stormed to gold, covering the 14km course in 21:44.5, having claimed four medals at the Australian Track Championships last weekend in Brisbane.

Silver went to Libby Arbuckle of New Zealand in 21:55.4, 11sec behind Moroney-Plouffe, while Australia's Madeleine Fasnacht finished in third place in 21:58.0.

Sebastian Berwick completed today's Australian dominance when he claimed the under-19 men's title in 36:14.7.

Thomas Jones took silver in 36:53.2 with Mitchell Wright rounded off the top three in 37:09.2, completing another sweep of the podium for the Australians.

Tomorrow marks the start of the road races with all three women's races taking place.

The men's road races then bring the action to a close on Saturday (March 11).

Sean Lake aiming for Oceania time trial and road race defence – Cyclingnews.com

Last March, Sean Lake did the double at the Oceania Championships and is again aiming for dual success in 2017. The IsoWhey Sports Swisswellness rider had a disappointing ride at the national time trial titles in January but comes into the event confident in the changes he's since made.

"Things have continued to move forward in the last training block and I am feeling really good about what performance I can put in for this time trial," Lake told Cyclingnews from Canberra ahead of the 41km test against the clock. "I have gone back to the same position at last year's Oceania's after not quite getting it right at nationals and it feels a lot better. I hadn't quite got my power up to the level I wanted and thought I was at nationals after losing a lot of weight. I think it is now and some results might start to come."

Lake, 25, has had a slower start to 2017 than last season to ensure he is feeling fresh and full of confidence after claiming the first general classification victory of his young career. The former rower won the opening time trial at the Victorian Road Series Tour of East Gippsland stage race last month.

The Oceanias are being held in Canberra for 2017 and with the change to a lumpier parcours than last year's course in Bendigo, Lake anticipates a tough challenge to defend his blue and white jersey.

"Joe is always a definite challenge in any TT and he can definitely go well," he said of teammate and NZ road champion Joe Coper. "On a hilly course, Ben Dyball I believe will hard to beat. Especially after the good time trial he did at nationals. The other one which will be interesting to see will be Hamish Bond, the Kiwi rower. We know he has a huge engine and if he can go fast then he'll be one to watch."

Having started to carve out a niche as a time trialist, Lake has also shown his capabilities on the road with back-to-back Grafton to Inverall wins and his Oceania win last year. However, Lake is looking to ticking the time trial goal before turning his attention to Saturday's 154km road race whichIsoWhey Sports Swisswellness will start with several cards to play.

"Both are super important to me but I suppose you can prepare a lot more specifically for a time trial than you can for a road race," he said of his two titles. "And a lot more things can happen in a road race. For the time trial, you have to put in the work and make sure everything is where it needs to be and that is what I have done in the past and it has given me good road race form. I have done a similar prep to last year and focused my training around the TT but I think that still holds me in good stead for the road race."

Jason Lea, Neil Van der Ploeg, Sam Chrome, Pat Lane, Jeremy Cameron and Cooper will line out with Lake for the road race with the team also aiming to secure a fourth year in successive it has topped the Oceania Tour rankings.

The three-day event is the second of three Continental Championships in quick succession, coming on the back of last weeks BMX competition in Bathurst and prior to the mountain bike competition in Toowoomba on Sunday (March 12).

More than 200 of Oceania's best road cyclists will descend on Australia's capital with 12 titles to decided on the road.

Champions will be crowned in the time trials and road races, for men and women, in the elite, under-23 and under-19 categories.

Australia's Sean Lake will be looking to defend his time trial and road race crowns.

New Zealands Joseph Cooper will be aiming to reclaim the time trial title he won in 2014, while national championship medallists Jason Christie of New Zealand and Australias Ben Dyball will also be vying for gold.

Australias Shannon Malseed is chasing back-to-back titles in the elite womens category, but is likely to have strong competition from compatriots Lisen Hockings and Lucy Kennedy, and New Zealands Ruby Livingstone, all of whom are bidding for their first.

"Over an exciting three days, we will be sure to witness exceptional performances from elite and aspiring athletes from across our region including from Australia, New Zealand, Guam and Tahiti in under-19, under-23 and elite categories," Oceania Cycling Confederation President Tracey Gaudry said.

"Many athletes will be competing in their first international event, while the more seasoned competitors including Rio 2016 Olympians will be aiming to represent their country at the 2017 World Road Cycling Championships in Norway this September.

"The Championships is positioned as the marquee event within the 2017 Oceania Tour, all carrying UCI (International Cycling Union) status, providing an immense opportunity for athletes in the Oceania region to compete against some of the worlds best on home soil.

"The competition will be intense, heightened by the spectacular rugged terrain in Canberra and the surrounding Stromlo and Tidbinbilla regions."

Oceania's best mountain bikers will take centre stage on Sunday, chasing not just continental honours but potential selection for the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Australian city Cairns.

More than 400 riders will battle it out for 10 titles at the Jubilee Mountain Bike Park, in the cross-country and downhill disciplines.

Six cross-country crowns will be decided in elite, under-23 and under-19 categories.

New Zealands Anton Cooper is looking to make it back-to-back in the elite mens cross-country, but is set to face stiff competition from Australians Daniel McConnell and Cameron Ivory.

Australias Rebecca Henderson will be aiming to defend her elite women's cross-country title, with compatriots Peta Mullens and Eliza Kwan also set top be in contention.

The downhill category will see four riders become Oceania champions in the elite and junior mens and womens races.

Last Saturday (March 4), Australians Kai Sakakibara and Leanna Curtis were crowned the elite champions at the 2017 Oceania BMX Championships.

Sakakibara, 20, was too strong in the elite men's event, taking gold in an Australian one-two-three ahead of Matthew Juster and Aaron Nottle.

In the elite women's event, reigning Australian champion Curtis took the title having finished fifth a year earlier.

New Zealand's Rebecca Petch claimed the silver medal with Australias Rachel Jones completing the podium.

Royal Caribbean Is Building the Latest World’s Largest Cruise Ship – Skift

Royal Caribbean International is going tokeepbeating its own big-ship record.

The Miami-based cruise operator announced Wednesday that its next new ship, Symphony of the Seas, will be the largest ship in the world just by a bit.

Its a familiar refrain. Royal Caribbean, the worlds largest cruise line measured by passenger capacity, launched the largest cruise ship ever in 2009. That ship, the 225,282-ton Oasis by the Seas, was followed by the slightly longer Allure of the Seas in 2010. Both carry5,400 passengers at double occupancy.

Lastyear, sister ship Harmony of the Seas become the biggest, encompassing 226,963 gross registered tons and holding 5,494 passengers. It will have to cede the title to Symphony of the Seas in April of 2018: At 230,000 tons, the new ship will have 28 more rooms than Harmony.

In a call with reporters, Royal Caribbean International president and CEO Michael Bayley called the new ship the latest, greatest, newest, most beautiful baby thats coming soon.

Bayley would not reveal many details about the upcomingship, but said there were some new features and a different design for the solarium area.

After making its debut in Europe and spending several months there,Symphony of the Seas will be based in Miami along with Allure of the Seas. Both will use a new terminal that isbeing built to handle the immense crowds that board and depart the megashipsin a matter of hours.

The other Oasis-class ships will also sail from Florida, at least in the winter: Oasis from Port Canaveral in Central Florida and Harmony from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. One of the vessels is likely to head to Europe in the summer of 2019.

Bayley said the company is not concerned about having too much capacity sailing the Caribbean next year, even as competitors including Norwegian Cruise Line plan to also sailnew ships inthe market.

Were quite bullish about the Caribbean, he said. Were seeing more and more internationalguests come into theCaribbean.

Whether or when an Oasis-class ship might make it to another hot destination China is still unclear.

Oooh, good question. You never know, Bayley told a reporter who asked about the possibility. He said the company has other classes of ships on order as well, smaller than Oasis but still giant.

Theres lots of opportunitiesfor the worlds largest ships to go to China, he said.

New Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Poster: Heroes & Villains Unite – Screen Rant

Aside from the release of the next installments in the Marvel andStar Warscinematic universes, Disney will also be releasing the newest outing in one of their longest-running and most profitable franchises to date withPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Making the return of severalof thefranchises oldest players, like Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, the new film promises to take the franchise to places its never quite been before. That includes the villainous Captain Salazar, a ghost pirate played with gleeful malevolence by the always reliable, Javier Bardem.

Picking up several years after the events of the last film,Dead Men Tell No Tales follows Johnny Depps Captain Jack Sparrow as he searches for the Trident of Poseidon, the only artifact capable of protecting him from Salazar and his undead crew. The latter of whom has just escaped the Devils Triangle by the time the film begins, looking to settle an old score with Sparrow, and simultaneously destroy every last Pirate still alive on the seas.

Disney just recently released a brand new, full theatrical trailer forDead Men Tell No Tales, and with a prime May release date, it promises to be a dark horse release for the studio this year. In continuation of the recent boost in promotional materials for the film, Disney has also unveiled a brand new international Dead Men Tell No Tales poster, unitingboth the moviesheroes and villains. Check it out for yourselves, down below:

Beginning back in 2001 withThe Curse of the Black Pearl, its doubtful anyone at the time could have predicted just how long thePirates of the Caribbeanmovie franchise would last for. Based initially on the Disney ride of the same name, the franchise started out as a fun, B-movie action film and went on to feature fights with Blackbeard, Davy Jones, and now, a Ghost Pirate and his undead crew. To say its been one of the zanier, and unexpected popular franchises of the 21st century then, wouldnt be much of an understatement.

Dead Men Tell No Talesmay or may not be the last installment in the franchise also, after the recent theatrical trailer marketed it as that, right before the directors contradicted that marketing choice. Whether or not it is, though, thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years and after the multiple year break-in between installments, itll be interesting to see just how much hypeDead Men Tell No Tales is able to garner for itself in the weeks leading up to its theatrical release.
