Travel: Paradise found on Alphonse Island in the Seychelles – The Scotsman

On a leisurely afternoon stroll during our stay on Alphonse Island in the Seychelles, we are greeted by an unusual sight: a giant Aldabra tortoise ambling along the road. Welcome to the rush-hour on Alphonse. If you want to get away from it all, youve come to the right place.

The island used to be only famous for fly fishing. But now it is proving it has much more in its tackle-box. The recently refurbished Alphonse Island hotel is offering the destinations first foray into luxury travel for all the family and its a resounding success.

Staffed by 64 very friendly employees, under the auspices of the excellent MD, Gordon Rankin, Alphonse Island has 21 gorgeous, recently-redecorated beach bungalows and five beach suites, each with a direct view of the sea.

You can reach Alphonse via Paris on Air Seychelles. The welcoming in-flight service and delicious tropical food instantly get you into the Alphonse vibe. On landing, you spend the night in the Seychelles capital Victoria. We stay at very pleasant Eden Bleu Hotel, which offers an enviable view of a nearby marina.

Next morning, we board a small propeller plane to fly an hour south to Alphonse, across seas glistening like jewels in the sunlight. It is an appealingly casual airport, whose fire engine is pulled behind a tractor.

As you step off the plane, there are no passport or security checks. It must be the easiest airport to pass through in the world. On the airstrip, we are greeted with refreshing flannels and coconuts full to the brim with milk.

Nature trumps everything else at Alphonse Island. You are never more than a few minutes away from the next amazing animal encounter. On a nature walk, for instance, we see a horned ghost crab and learn that it can bury itself in the sand and hide from predators for up to six hours.

Alphonse Island, which has a maximum occupancy of just 52 guests, takes conservation very seriously. For instance, to protect the delicate coral reef, no motorised water sports are allowed on the island. In addition, those fishing on the island use barbless hooks, and every fish caught on a fly is immediately released back into the water.

One of the many terrific activities on offer at Alphonse Island is snorkelling, and its a breath-taking experience. Like an extra in a David Attenborough documentary, you swim among an incredible array of tropical fish with the most wonderfully exotic names: schooling snapper, bluefin trevally, batfish, moorish idol, milkfish, powder blue tang, moustache triggerfish, nudibranch, yellow-lip emperor, jobfish, damselfish, dog tooth tuna, yellow margin triggerfish, and Picasso triggerfish. Its like being in an aquarium, but with no walls.

On another day, we go on a dolphin-watching expedition. We are searching for spinner dolphins, so called because they are exhibitionists who like to put on a show. They enjoy nothing more than leaping out of the water in front of the boat and twizzling in mid-air.

There is a visceral thrill when we spot a pod of 100 spinner dolphins in the deep waters surrounding Alphonse. As they circle the boat in a gorgeous arc, formation-dance teams of dolphins breach the surface simultaneously in the most amazing sea samba. They pirouette around the boat in a mesmerising routine. Its quite a spectacle.

On the island itself, 50 giant Aldabra tortoises which can live up to 200 years (and so may have been born around the time of the Battle of Waterloo) and weigh more than 300kg freely roam the paths and, as we have seen, block the traffic.

There are any number of other superb activities to participate in at Alphonse Island, from paddle-boarding and cycling around the car-free paths on your own personalised bike to a Flats Lunch, taken knee-deep in water on a spectacular sandbar on the neighbouring island of St Franois.

The staff at Alphonse Island make the experience all the more enjoyable. Guests congregate in the early evening in the bar area, a beautifully designed thatched deck that leads out onto another picturesque beach. There the fisherman swap tales about the ones that got away.

We are encouraged by Gordon to come to the bar barefoot, So you can feel the sand between your toes. A bell is rung in the bar every evening at 7pm for a light hearted celebration of the days achievements. Prizes are awarded in categories such as Biggest Bonefish of the Day and Most Sunburnt Person of the Day.

The bar area is also where the hotels delicious fresh food is served. The only drawback is that the wi-fi in the bar wont allow you to send photos. There must be a smugness block.

Alphonse Island is full of lovely touches. For instance, when you arrive, they leave a welcome tropical flower and kikoy (or sarong) on your bed, to be worn at the last night party.

But the absolute star attraction of the beach bungalows has to be the outside shower at the back of the house. Shielded from prying eyes by a wooden log wall, you can enjoy a wonderful shower open to the elements. Its highly invigorating.

God is in the detail at Alphonse Island. For example, after an hour of a glorious kayaking trip, just when youre beginning to flag, hotel staff meet you on a beach by the end of the runway with cold water and wet flannels.

Alphonse is very lucky in that it has no snakes, no killer sharks, no terrible mosquitoes, no insect-borne diseases, and no hurricanes (because its too close to the equator). Also, for those of us used to taking dips in the icy North Sea, swimming in the balmy Indian Ocean is like taking a warm bath.

The risk of writing such an article is that it encourages legions of holiday-makers to visit and ruin the unspoilt idyll you have just described. The Eagles sang about this in their classic song, The Last Resort: You call some place paradise, and youre kissing it goodbye.

But the thing is, Alphonse Island really does live up to its paradise billing.

When, as I do, you come from a big city where you cant go anywhere without being crowded out by hundreds of cars and people, it is an uncanny experience to walk for miles along a flawless white beach without seeing a single other soul.

There are fewer and fewer places like this in the world, and they really need to be preserved. There are no cars on Alphonse, and youre more likely to be woken by the sound of a turtle than an engine. There is also no mobile signal on the island, so it is ideal for escaping all those hassly calls asking if you have thought of claiming for mis-sold PPI.

As we pass through the tiny arrivals lounge after our return flight to Victoria, I notice a tourist board poster on the wall. Over a photograph of a Seychelles beach, the caption reads: All the trappings of a truly amazing vacation without the feeling of being trapped.

I couldnt have put it better myself. n

Loran Smith: Trip to Caribbean a feast for senses – Online Athens

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO | There are more than 700 islands in the Caribbean, which has for decades thrived as a playground for people from all over the world. Wherever you stop, youre confronted with an atmosphere which is conducive to maana. For many throughout the Caribbean, every day is a day of rest.

A laptop and an iPhone keep you in touch with whomever and whatever you want, but there are many alluring options to dominate your mood and overwhelm your emotions. An early riser sleeps later in the Caribbean even when on work assignment. A fruit breakfast to start your day, a lunch by the sea, which roars ashore with continual and relentless intensity, and a dinner in a similar environment makes one want to extend the stay.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory that came to us by way of the 1898 Spanish-American War. You remember Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders? The battle of San Juan Hill? The United States came out of that long-ago conflict with considerable real estate, including the island of Puerto Rico. Although the island is a tax haven for many, Puerto Rico itself is essentially bankrupt.

While soccer is big in Puerto Rico, it was also the birthplace of one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Roberto Clemente. It was home for golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez until lately. For health and financial reasons, Chi Chi now lives in south Florida. Lest we forget, one of Puerto Ricos most accomplished sons is Manuel Diaz, the Hall of Fame tennis coach at the University of Georgia.

An invitation from Jay and Clare Walker led to a brief respite here, which was enhanced by sun, captivating views, breezes, moon-splashed outdoor dining and the ever-present waves of the Caribbean ringing in your ear which led to reminiscing about other years and other places like St. Croix, St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Mealtimes can be an adventure, and every hour can be social hour when you come to the islands. I met a couple of new drinks that I really liked Lynchburg Lemonade and Coconut Sunset. The basic ingredients of the first are Jack Daniels, Cointreau and lemon. Try it, you will like it. The Coconut Sunset becomes addictive created with Bacardi rum, coconut, guava, a splash of ginger ale and mint.

Its best to enjoy such drinks with the Caribbean in view, rambunctious seas thundering, blue skies, waving palms, and mynah birds tweeting staccato, squawking sounds as they forage for crumbs.

The sun is always kissing bikini-clad bodies at the Caribbean beaches some fit for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and some needing to be reminded that the calendar has taken its toll.

Traditional Caribbean music still falls pleasantly on the ear. Especially old-time reggae if you stop in Jamaica, along with calypso and traditional folk songs. On an earlier trip to the Caribbean this year, I was having lunch one day at a snack bar in the Dominican Republic, which softly featured the aforementioned music on the house system when a favorite folk tune sounded forth.

It carries the title, Shame and Scandal in the Familee.

Seems that this young boy from the islands became enraptured with a certain young girl and decided to marry her. He went to see his father and told him about his plan. He then told the father the name of his bride-to-be. To his amazement, his father was aghast, saying, Oh no, that girl is your sister, but your mama dont know.

Dejected, the boy decided he would not go against his fathers wishes and broke up with the girl he had selected to be his mate. Soon he found another girl and thought she would be the right one for him. Again, he disclosed his plans to his father, who came with the same refrain, Oh no, that girl is your sister but your mama dont know.

With the passing of time there was a third girl in whom the boy developed a serious interest. The same scenario surfaced once again with the father espousing the redundant disclaimer: Oh no, that girl is your sister, but your mama dont know.

In exasperation, the boy sought out his mother and told her what was going on. His mother laughed and told him to marry any girl he wanted, explaining that, Your daddy aint your daddy, but your daddy dont know.

The Caribbean can always count on Cuba – Jamaica Observer

This past week, Cuba was once again the capital of the Caribbean, serving as venue to different regional meetings aiming to dialogue about key issues for our region like tourism, commerce, transportation, sustainable development, the environment and climate change.

The First Cooperation Conference of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), held in Havana, last 8th March, focused on two important areas: the fight against climate change, and the connection by sea. Representatives from ACS member states as well as United Nations funds and programmes were in attendance. The strengthening of the concertation and cooperation capacity will favour ACS member states and associates to be in better conditions to face the issues and problems affecting the region.

As stated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba Ileana Nez Mordoche, who visited Jamaica last May, 2016, the conference represented an opportunity to assess capacities, join forces, and integrate in order to achieve sustainable development in all Caribbean countries.

The capital of Cuba also hosted the XXII Ordinary Meeting of ACS Council of Ministers from 9th-10 March, chaired by ACS Secretary General June Soomer, and President of the Republic of Cuba, Raul Castro Ruz. Representatives from ACS members states participated. The Jamaican delegation was presided over by the Honourable Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte.

To discuss our common interests and the risks that Caribbean nations share was the main goal of the meeting. ACS member states were able to review the implementation of the agreements adopted at the Seventh Summit of the Association held in Havana on June 4, 2016, during which the Heads of State and Government, driven by their commitment with ACS and determined to strengthen its role as a platform for political dialogue, coordination and cooperation, approved the Havana Declaration and Plan of action.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla stated that in the face of the walls intended to be built, our choice should continue to be unity, solidarity and complementarity to defend the most legitimate interests of our peoples. Given the current scenario, we could only achieve that if we coordinate and concert our actions in an effective way around the consensus attained in those areas at the Seventh Summit. In this regard, we should enhance the possibilities of our Association to come up with a joint response.

CARICOM-CUBA

During the V Ministerial Meeting Caricom-Cuba, on 11th March, Cuba ratified the permanent compromise to maintain the traditional cooperation with the countries of this regional organisation in key areas like health, education, construction and response to natural disasters.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to convey our profound appreciation for the support of the Caribbean nations to our people and Government, especialy, in the fight against the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States.

The ties between Cuba and the nations of the Caribbean are strongly based on solidarity and marked by a high political level. Cuba continues to feel proud of the excellent relations it maintains with every country of the Caribbean, and it shall continue working side by side with ACS and Caricom member states toward the strengthening of the diplomatic and economic relations. Likewise, it reiterates the willingness to continue and strengthen cooperation with ACS and Caricom in areas like health, education, sports, etc.

As stated by Chancellor Rodriguez Parrilla: The Caribbean can always count on Cuba. Our country will continue defending, at regional and international fora, the legitimate interest of the Caribbean nations, who deserve the gratitude of our people and Government for the permanent solidary and brave support.

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez vacation together in the Bahamas – New York Daily News

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Sunday, March 12, 2017, 11:35 AM

Alex Rodriguez's relationship with pop star Jennifer Lopez appears to be proceeding harmoniously.

The former Yankees slugger and the "Let's Get Loud" singer vacationed together in the Bahamas over the weekend, People magazine reported.

The star-powered couple dubbed J-Rod after news of their romance broke last week reportedly arrived in the island paradise southeast of Miami on Friday.

A-Rod, 41, and JLo, 47, stayed at the high-end Baker's Bay Golf & Ocean Club, a private resort on the Great Guana Cay, a source told the magazine.

Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez have been dating for four months

Rodriguez, who retired from the MLB in 2016, and Lopez were each in Miami on Friday before meeting up for their trip to the nearby Bahamas.

The longtime third baseman who is currently serving as a special instructor for the Yankees at their Spring Training facility in Tampa spoke at a Wharton School of Business event in Miami before his vacation with Lopez.

Rodriguez and Lopez's relationship was first reported last week, with a source telling the Daily News that they've been seeing each other for about four months.

Lopez was previously linked to hip-hop star Drake after the duo appeared in several photos and attended multiple events together late last year.

Offshore Drilling – Part I – Complete Overview Of The Drillships Segment Worldwide As Of March 10, 2017 (Update) – Seeking Alpha

Source: Drillship Pacific Mistral - Courtesy Offshore Energy Today.

Investment Thesis:

The offshore drilling industry plays an important part in the Oil & Gas supply chain.

Did you know that Oil production from offshore locations accounts for approximately 29% of the global crude oil production in 2015, according to the EIA? This percentage has been nearly constant since 2005. I was not able to find the repartition for 2016, yet. However, It is highly likely that offshore accounts for 28% to 30% as well.

The main locations are in Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Mexico, Norway/UK and the USA and represent a total of approximately 27 Million BOE/d.

The bulk of the crude production is still in the "shallow waters", which are generally cheaper and less technically challenging.

In this area, Oil and Gas producers will need a rig less expensive anchored to the rock floor, called Jack-up.

However, there has also been a move toward "deep waters" and "ultra-deepwaters" projects the past 5 to 10 years. Exploratory drilling in deeper waters and ultra-deep waters is naturally more costly and complex for O & G companies, but technology advancements and the near exhaustion of shallower prospects have forced oil majors to explore increasingly deeper waters, particularly in Brazil, West Africa and in the Gulf of Mexico.

The rigs required to perform the drilling in the "deep waters" segment are called floaters or mainly Drillships and Semi-submersibles. Let's have a look at the Drillships situation here.

A quick review of the Drillship fleet Worldwide as of March 10, 2017.

Note: I have used what has been publicly available on InfieldRigs website and translated to easy-to-read graphs that will help you to understand the situation as we go through 2017. I will update this article every quarters.

Basically, the Drillships segment represents a total of 149 rigs including the ones under-construction as of March 10, 2017. The main categories are as follows:

Excluding the "under-construction" segment we actually have 119 rigs in the market and drilling, ready to drill or waiting to drill. Actually 47.9% of these rigs are working and receiving a day rate from a client. The others are moored, on standby or idle in different states.

Most of these rigs are fairly recent and the average age is 9 years (built 2007).

I have identified 6 different locations where 57 rigs are drilling as of January 1, 2017:

As we can see, North America and more particularly the US Gulf of Mexico, is the main player

together with Brazil they represent approximately 67% of the total drillships contracted. Since the oil crash, West Africa has lost approximately 50% of its drillships fleet.

The middle East and Europe are active both in the jack-ups and Semi-submersibles segments, not really in the deep waters segment.

Brazilian offshore production increased by 58% between 2005 and 2015, making Brazil the second-largest offshore producer in 2015 and probably in 2016 as well. Below a very interesting repartition per location.

This production growth in Brazil was made possible by the expansion of deepwater pre-salt project, which is "deep waters".

Until recently, this field was exclusively owned by Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) (National Oil Company NOC), however, On October 2016, Brazil approved handing Pre-salt oil reserves to Oil Majors such as Statoil (NYSE:STR) or TOTAL (NYSE:TOT) which is expected to boost production.

With production increasing from approximately 41,000 barrels per day in 2010 to a million in mid-2016, Petrobras believes Brazil's pre-salt discovery is one of the world's most important in the past decade. It is believed that reserves of over 50 billion barrels could exist in the basin, nearly four times the current national reserves of roughly 14 billion barrels.

The United States offshore production has been boosted by recent strong production in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to EIA in February 2016:

Between 2008 and 2016, offshore production has grown nearly 19%, with several large projects coming online in 2016 and 2017. The Gulf of Mexico saw a production of 1.728 MBOEd in December 2016, according to EIA (From 0.72 MBOEd in 1982).

West/East Africa segment has seen a huge decline in Deep waters and the actual production of 4.6 MBOEd is set to dip to 2.6 MBOEd by 2030, unless CapEx is restored in this area, according to WoodMcEnzie.

Wood Mackenzie claims planned oil and gas investments in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next five years have been reduced by $100 billion. Major oil company cutbacks account for the bulk of the reductions.

Conclusion:

The deep waters segment is an important segment and investors should not avoid this sector as a long-term investment just because it is experiencing a terrible downturn. Yes, it is struggling but.

As Mark Twain once commented to a reporter "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." after "hearing on good authority that it was thought to be dead", offshore drilling is definitely struggling but is far from dead.

The main issue for us all, is to apply the right trading/investing strategy by following closely what is going on. The drillship segment is quite small and easy to follow.

The actual situation is not positive, and the near-term may likely bring more pain. However, It is clear to me that we have reached a bottom though, if oil prices can trade above $50-$60 a barrel in the second part of 2017? Oil prices are of a paramount importance.

Last week, we experienced some serious oil price weakness after the EIA reported a record US stock pile now at 528.4 Mbo. However, it is clear that OPEC and non OPEC will likely continue to cut production despite the US Shale booming again, with a production approaching the 9.2 MBOPD again...

Please read my most recent article about this situation. Click here.

Understanding the industry through simple numbers helps to decide and pinpoint the right timing and the right company. One of my main companies in this sector is Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) -- the strongest in the drillship/semi-submersible sector by far with a backlog over $11 billion comprising of $7+ billion for the floater segment -- Other such as Noble (NYSE:NE), Ensco (NYSE:ESV), Rowan (NYSE:RDC), Diamond offshore (NYSE:DO) could be also selected as good candidates.

Important note: Do not forget to follow me on the offshore drilling. Thank you for your support.

Disclosure: I am/we are long RIG, ESV, RDC.

I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Additional disclosure: I may add NE and DO?

Dearbhail McDonald: Offshore assets haul may net minnows rather than sharks – Irish Independent

The Revenue Commissioner's offshore assets letter arrived in the post recently and the only thing missing was the soundtrack from the movie Jaws.

Most brown envelopes with a harp on them make me go into an irrational panic. It's a bit like when security personnel at the airport ask me if I've packed my bag myself.

I have. But, having watched too many documentaries about innocent (and not so innocent) drug mules, I am always struck by a momentary terror that heroin with a street value of 8m has been placed in my luggage when I'm looking at the departures board.

The offshore assets letter the Revenue sent to 500,000 taxpayers, is - if the menacing and, frankly, entirely confusing text is anything to go by - designed to scare the living hell out of us.

And in fairness to the scare masters-in-chief at Dublin Castle, the Revenue have achieved that desired effect in bucket loads. Accountants and advisers, financial journalists too, have been inundated with calls from stressed taxpayers bewildered by the missive, which followed an announcement on Budget Day last October by Finance Minister Michael Noonan.

Noonan announced that the Government, with the mutual assistance of overseas tax agencies, was going to target offshore income and assets that have not been declared.

The deadline for confessions or "necessary corrections" as the Revenue calls them, is May 1. And there is a real benefit in fessing up, including reduced penalties, not having your name published in the tax defaulters list and avoiding prosecution.

The real and necessary target is large-scale tax evaders. But the sweep could also affect ordinary decent taxpayers who may or may not have bank accounts, pensions and other undeclared offshore assets.

The problem with the Revenue's "qualifying disclosure" letter is that it fails to spell out in plain English the nature and impact of the "significant changes" relating to "a person's offshore matters or matters".

"These changes restrict a person's opportunity to make a 'qualifying disclosure'", says the letter, before adding "if this affects you, there are full details on our website".

That's fine for high-net-worth individuals (HNWI's) who rarely make an appearance on the Revenue's quarterly tax defaulters list, with a coterie of advisors to manage their tax exposures.

But the opaque language and instructions are unfair to more vulnerable cohorts of taxpayers, such as the elderly or those with limited financial literacy.

That said, it is pensioners, especially those who worked in the UK in their salad days, who may need to clarify if they will be caught by the new offshore assets net.

Almost 135,000 Irish residents were in receipt of British state pensions as of last August. And although many of them will fall outside of the annual income tax threshold, they may also be renting properties overseas and failing to declare income, intentionally or not.

My guess is that despite all the publicity surrounding exposs such as Lux Leaks and Panama Leaks and another incarnation known as Swiss Leaks, it's not politicians and businessmen who have most to fear.

I suspect the vast bulk of monies recovered from the Revenue's latest offshore haul will come from the masses of terrified pensioners who will answer Ireland's call.

Speak out about your experiences – Hibbing Daily Tribune

HIBBING An innovative program designed to bring generations to together is inviting Hibbing residents of all ages to Speak Out.

Hibbing is the newest community to step forward to join the Northland Foundations AGE to age: bringing generations together, which is an initiative of the Northland Foundations KIDS PLUS Program.

For 25 years, KIDS PLUS has been working with communities in northeastern Minnesota to improve the wellbeing of children and youth, from birth to adulthood, said Lynn Haglin, Northland Foundation vice-president and KIDS PLUS director. AGE to age began in 2008 with a handful of communities and has now grown, with the latest addition of Hibbing, to 16 sites throughout the seven-county region.

To show residents what AGE to age is all about, community members are invited to a Speak Out event from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, in Hibbing Community College commons, where dinner will be served and, as the organizers hope, much conversation will be had.

This is a special opportunity to hear from Hibbing area residents representing a span of many decades from present-day youth to people in their 80s or 90s, speakers will share what it was like to grow up in Hibbing, Haglin explained. The audience can listen to these interesting stories, ask questions and share their insights as well. It will be a chance to learn about their community history and find out what has stayed the same and what is different about being a young person in Hibbing whether they grew up in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and so on, up to today.

The program aims to create intergenerational connections between Hibbing residents to not only learn from each other, but to work together to build a stronger community by using these discussions to develop plans and projects for the area.

As Haglin pointed out, it is rare for discussions of this type to occur these days.

In many communities today, there arent many intentional ways for young people to meet and benefit from the older generations, she said. In many cases, weve lost the inter-generational connections that families and communities used to have in the past. Grandchildren may not live near grandparents. Neighbors may not know neighbors as well as they once did. AGE to age links the generations to share their time and talents.

In other cities participating in the program, projects developed through these dialogues have included community gardens, walking clubs, teaching traditional activities such as crafts, baking, language, storytelling and helping older adults with smartphone and computer technology.

However, there is no one telling residents what to do.

Each community knows best what its resources are and what its needs are, and AGE to age being guided by and engaging local people at each site allows the program to be unique in each location, Haglin explained.

In fact, the greatest resource in making these decisions is each and every resident of Hibbing.

This is a chance to understand one another better and learn some of the things that we share in common, no matter our age, Haglin said. We hope the room is full of people of all generations.

What: Northland Foundations AGE to age: bringing generations together Speak Out

When: 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14. A light supper from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

Where: Hibbing Community College Commons, 1515 E. 25th St.

Who: Youth, parents, adults 55-plus, parents, and representatives from K-12 and higher education, state/local/tribal government, faith communities, youth serving organizations, health and human services, civic organizations and businesses. Ages 9 to 99 are welcome.

The Promise of Paradise features area – 100 Mile House Free Press

The Promise of Paradise

A new book by journalist Andrew Scott called The Promise of Paradise showcases some of the unique stories British Columbia and the South Cariboo have on offer.

The book delves into the history of "intentional" or "utopian" communities throughout British Columbia, exploring their roots and the many different attempts to build idealistic colonies in the wilderness of B.C.

The Promise of Paradise is an updated version of a book by the same name, published 20 years ago by Scott. The new edition contains a chapter on the history of the Emissaries of Divine Light the spiritual community led by Martin Exeter that helped found 100 Mile House as well as how intentional communities have evolved in British Columbia.

"Quite a bit has happened in the last 20 years and nobody else has really written about it," says Scott.

Scott says it was important to include the Emissaries of Divine Light in the revised version of the book.

"They were one of the largest and most successful for a long time of communal intentional communities in British Columbia."

While the Emissaries of Divine Light were spread throughout B.C., they were headquartered in 100 Mile House for many years. Scott says they were unusual because of their size.

"They built 100 Mile House. There were hundreds and hundreds of other communal communities in the 60s and 70s but most of them might have had a dozen or 20 people. At the most, to have 100 people working together and learning together is unusual, but to have 1,000 is unprecedented."

Among other stories, the book also tells the history of the Ochiltree Organic Commune, a "rebel commune" with an interesting history that often brought meat to more traditional "hippy" vegetarian conferences and often saw themselves in conflict with other groups or local government. The group has now morphed into the Community Enhancement and Economic Development Society (CEEDS) located near Horse Lake.

The new version of the book also includes a chapter on modern day intentional communities.

"The earlier communities were often led by a single charismatic leader who inspired people and had followers. While he was leading, if he was doing a good job, some of those communities flourished."

Styles of intentional communities have since changed, however.

"Over the years what I call distributed forms of leadership became more successful," he says. "Most intentional communities are really based on developing consensus, not having a strong leader, but having everyone at once participate in the leadership."

Scott tells the stories though a combination of careful archival research and first-person accounts, where he brings the stories and people featured in the book to life.

"I generally have a lot of respect for people who have stuck out doing these kinds of things. The Emissaries of Divine Light are very much reduced in size, but they keep hanging on and I wish them well," he says.

"There have been a lot of hilarious accidents and failures over the years, but generally speaking I think people will feel inspired reading about these groups."

How Fully Synthetic Complex Life Just Got a Lot Closer – Singularity Hub

From domestication to selective breeding and right up to DNA editing, humans have long sought to bend the genetic makeup of animals and plants to our needs. Now an international team has taken a significant step towards building the genome of a complex organism from scratcha major milestone in the quest for fully synthetic life.

Led by Jef Boeke, a geneticist at New York University Langone Medical Center, the Synthetic Yeast Project (Sc2.0) has now built five new synthetic chromosomes for the single-celled fungus S. cerevisiae, more commonly known as Bakers yeast.

Boekes lab had previously synthesized the first synthetic yeast chromosome in 2014, meaning that more than a third of the organisms genome16 chromosomes in totalhas now been replaced with engineered alternatives. The consortium has also finished designing the entire genome and expects to have synthesized working versions of all the chromosomes within the year.

Sc2.0 is not the first major effort to create synthetic life. In 2010, geneticist Craig Venter manufactured the entire genome of the bacteria Mycoplasma mycoides and transplanted it into another Mycoplasma species, creating the first self-replicating synthetic organism. This genome was almost identical to the original, but then last year his team released new research in which they had whittled down the organisms genome to just 473 genesthe bare bones required for life.

As impressive as these feats are, though, M. mycoides is far simpler than yeast, with just a single chromosome. Yeast is a eukaryote, a group that includes all complex lifelike plants and animalsand is also at the heart of crucial processes like baking, brewing and, more recently, synthesizing chemicals.

The organism has been genetically modified to mass-produce insulin, antibiotics, vaccines, biofuel and even perfume. Lab experiments have shown yeast can be tweaked to produce a wide variety of chemicals, and it has even been used to generate electricity in microbial fuel cells.

All of this has been done using established genetic engineering approaches, where sections of the organisms DNA are substituted with useful genes from elsewhere. But the ability to build the organisms entire genome from the bottom up could give scientists far greater control over what the yeast is able to produce.

This work sets the stage for completion of designer synthetic genomes to address unmet needs in medicine and industry, Boeke said in a press release. Beyond any one application, the papers confirm that newly-created systems and software can answer basic questions about the nature of genetic machinery by reprogramming chromosomes in living cells.

The breakthrough was revealed in a series of seven papers published in a special edition of the journal Science last Thursday March 9, featuring more than 200 authors from labs across the world. In the main paper, researchers led by Joel Bader, a professor of biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explain how the synthetic genome has been redesigned to make it easier to manipulate.

By removing non-coding DNA, the new genome has been made roughly eight percent smaller than the natural one, and also includes 17 rather than 16 chromosomes. Thats because all of the yeasts transfer RNA (tRNA)responsible for putting amino acids in the right order when building proteinsnormally spread out through the genome have all been put into a single extra chromosome. This helps boost the robustness of the genome because tRNA are notoriously unstable and prone to mutation due to how often they are transcribed.

The new design also includes a biochemical system known as SCRaMbLE that makes it much easier to customize chromosomes. Some 5,000 DNA tags placed throughout the genome can be targeted with a mutation that causes protein to randomly modify the organisms genetic code. Scientists can then see if the changes lead to any desirable characteristics, such as producing interesting new chemicals or strains able to survive in extreme environments.

Were shortcutting evolution by millions of years, Patrick Cai, whose lab at the University of Edinburgh is building the 17th chromosome, told Wired. Our goal here is not engineering a particular kind of yeast, but the kind of yeast that is amenable to engineering.

Key to the international collaboration at the heart of the project was the creation of a piece of software called BioStudio. Effectively a piece of version control software, the program allows multiple users to simultaneously edit the genome and accept and reject changes. Most importantly, it allows rollbacks to previous designs when problems crop up.

Translating this code into real-life chromosomes follows a similar incremental process, with small chunks of genome being sequentially introduced into live yeast that is then compared against natural yeast to see how the modified strains do. If the synthetic yeast encounters problems, the researchers know which section is carrying the fault and can go back and debug the faulty code.

One of the most impressive aspects of the research is the wholesale changes the group has made to the organisms genetic code. The fact that they were able to do this across five different chromosomes, and the fitness is still similar to wild-type cells, thats pretty impressive, Dan Gibson at Synthetic Genomics, a biotech company developing synthetic chromosomes in another yeast species, told New Scientist.

Genome synthesis is not simple or cheap, though. Harvard University geneticist George Church told Nature its unlikely to replace tools like CRISPRa workhorse of genetic engineering that allows targeted genetic edits by adding or removing short sections of DNAin anything other than the most complicated rewrites of the genetic code.

Nonetheless, the research has dramatically expanded the scope of whats possible in genetic engineering. Theyve been able to induce radical changes in the code, so it emboldens you to be even more radical, said Church.

Solarstone shows off his ‘State Of Mind’ with ethereal trance – Dancing Astronaut

When Solarstone released his Pure album in 2012, he thought itd be his last. As it turned out, Pure became the starting point of a mass movement within the trance scene that turned him into one of the leading figures bringing the genres true ethos back to life.

Since then, a resurgence of sorts has taken place in which the original, traditional sounds have come out on top, and outspoken passion from the fans has led to trance making a notable return to the public psyche as more and more heed to increased demands of the music in various localities. Solarstone recognizes this, and has transcribed his thoughts into a new music which will serve as the backdrop to a brand new project hes reportedly brewing up.

A State Of Mind comes as the introduction to this, and is broken into two different version. Solarstone begins with the ethereal Extended Mix, an eleven-minute gem of a song which unfolds across an ethereal landscape driven along by a smooth, running bass-line and filled with distant, vibrating synth melodies and a central melodic arrangement that feels melancholic in tone. Its various peaks and lulls tell a timeless story and tug at the heartstrings, making this a shining addition to Solarstones contemporary repertoire.

The Pure Mix adapts A State Of Mind to a club setting, inserting a thumping kick and more pronounced samples into the mix to make an ideal peaktime record. It represents the moving, uplifitng sound that Solarstone has built an excellent reputation for over his long years serving trance.

Nick Ferrari: Political correctness is turning our police into social services – Express.co.uk

GETTY

Police in Durham are to hand out free heroin to drug users. They say it will both cut crime and save money and will encourage addicts to keep to the straight and narrow.

But the cost per addict per annum is an eye-watering 15,000. This is utter nonsense. All this will achieve is to give addicts clean fixes.

Surely the only aim here should be to get these addicts off drugs and its darned difficult to envisage how that would happen.

Campaigners say that addiction is an illness akin to cancer and the victim should be treated in a similar fashion. In some instances there will be some justification for that view.

When will our PCs stop being so PC?

Nick Ferrari

Someone unfortunate enough to have little or no parental guidance, who then goes on to fail at school, finds it impossible to get a job then has a disastrous relationship with a partner, is likely to seek something that numbs the ceaseless pain and dims consciousness of their appalling situation.

Obviously, sympathy and help should be afforded to them, but giving them free heroin is not the answer. Then, there are those who commit a litany of offences to fuel their habit and the insanity of this madcap scheme will actually reward them.

So lets get this straight: taxpayers cash will be spent to fund a criminals lifestyle and the drugs handed over by the police. Who came up with this idea, Pete Doherty?

GETTY

Current legislation against drugs has failed and the long line of police chiefs who have promised to wage war on drugs have come up empty-handed.

Its not entirely their fault as, in many cases, the courts have failed to impose the sorts of sentences that could be seen to have any effect but the prevalence of drug use increases by the day.

The drugs are easier to come by and are cheaper and the money the dealers can make continues to increase as demand soars.

Justifying the plan in Durham, Chief Constable Mike Barton said: We need to get over our moral panic about giving people heroin as part of a treatment plan. Our primary concern is to prevent crime... Addiction is a medical problem not a criminal justice problem.

And there we have it. A senior police officer lecturing us about why we need not panic over giving free drugs to junkies. What if one of these addicts has 18 months of free heroin and then goes back to crime?

Do you suppose we get our 22,500 back? No, me neither.

Sadly, this is just another step in the path of decline for our police who are being turned into social workers. Their authority is constantly diminished and then politicians are baffled when crime increases.

On Friday it was revealed that knife crime has increased to the highest level in six years and this is in no small way due to the restrictions imposed on police by Theresa May when she was Home Secretary to limit the amount of stop and searches.

Police have to explain why they are stopping a possible suspect and then give them a sheet detailing everything that took place.

GETTY

While I am not advocating people being routinely dragged off the streets and hurled into the back of a van by police and kept in a darkened cell for hours, surely the balance has gone the other away.

There are still plenty of good police officers out there, I speak with them regularly on my call-in breakfast radio show, and they are even more frustrated with how their hands are tied than we are.

The role of the police is to protect us and lock up the bad guys. Positioning themselves almost as NHS outreach workers is not the way forward, but just when will our PCs stop being so PC?

It is a scandal that many of the relatives of those who lost their lives in the calamitous Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts were not invited to the unveiling of a memorial to the fallen by the Queen in London last week.

PA

More than 600 servicemen and women laid down their lives in those wars so who on Earth took the decision not to offer invitations to their families?

Occupying some of the best seats, instead, were members of the Royal Family and current and former senior politicians, which is right even in the case of Tony Blair, the man who took us into the disastrous wars, as he would have been damned if he did attend and equally damned if he did not.

However, why were former ambassadors invited instead of proud family members? It wouldnt have brought all those brave men and women back, but it would have showed how much the lost ones were valued.

What is it with this Government and doctors? As if they are not bruised enough after their lengthy battle with the junior doctors there is now a plan to allow patients to name and shame GPs with long waiting times.

Architects of the scheme say it will encourage surgeries to improve. Cobblers. It will sour the relationship between patient and doctor and demoralise our GPs yet further.

Full Moon In Virgo: Seeking Solutions For Our Limitations, Wounds & Blockages – Collective Evolution

We're creating a positive news network. We need your help.

We are having a Full Moon in Virgo on March 12th, however, for those in the Western part of the world it will appear the fullest on the night of March 11th. Full Moons are the peak of the Moon cycle when both the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs, with this case being Virgo and Pisces.

The opposition between the two signs can bring up situations in which we need to learn to work with both sides of the polarity, and in many situations it can be in a challenging or emotionally charged way. In this case, however, the South Node is in Pisces (where we also had the last solar eclipse) and the North Node is in Virgo, which started in November 2015 and will finish in May.

The month of Pisces (Feb 19 Mar 20) is generally one of the more magical periods of the year, and a good time to explore and participate in anything that involves spirituality, creativity, and healing. However, because the South Node is in Pisces, and we had the recent eclipse there, we are also being called to release any negative qualities of Pisces we may have. This energy is still playing out over the coming months. (You can read more about it here.)

During this Full Moon, we are being reminded of the evolutionary push we need to make towards the Virgo energies that we are lacking, which the Universe is calling on us to embrace. Virgo is about being grounded, realistic, attentive, organized, clean, pure, and productive. Taking care of our physical bodies and living a functional life is important when we are dealing with the Virgo sector of the zodiac. In situations like this, sometimes challenges come up that push us to be able to adapt to lifes challenges in a better and more efficient way.

Venus started its retrograde just 8 days prior to this Full Moon. This is shaking things up and pushing us to reflect on our relationships, values, money, and how we express and receive love. This may or may not be directly related to this Full Moon for everyone, however, it is still an important part of the backdrop until April/May.

The Sun is applying towards a conjunction to Chiron with Mercury close by. Chiron is somewhat of an asteroid associated with our blocks, wounds, traumas, as well as healing. Any situations or challenges that come up during this Full Moon could be associated with the need to heal and/or move beyond what is holding us back. The Sun will be making an exact alignment with Chiron on March 14th.

The Sun, Chiron, and Mercury with the Moon opposing them are all forming a square aspect with Saturn in Sagittarius. We may face obstacles, limitations, or perhaps the need to get real about a certain perspective around something related to the Virgo-Pisces opposition. The Sun will make an exact square to Saturn on March 17th/18th that will bring up some of these things.

Mercury has been in Pisces since February 25th/26th and will be going into Aries a day after this Full Moon on the 13th/14th. This could lead us to be more imaginative and perhaps more psychic, but due to being somewhat mentally absent. Mercury here can make our communication less direct and confusing and easier to overlook details and more challenges with left-brained activities. Once it goes into Aries our minds and communication will be quicker and more direct.

What are your limitations, blockages, and wounds showing you about what you need to change? What can you do to be more healthy, efficient, and productive?

Interestingly, daylight savings time starts on the day of the Full Moon in North America. I would imagine that many people will face challenges as a result of not paying attention to it even though it is a Sunday. This is a great example of the Virgo-Pisces polarity at play.

Since Virgo is associated with health and the Full and waning Moon is associated with release, this can be a good time to do some sort of cleanse/detox up until the next New Moon in two weeks. This is especially so since we will be transitioning from Winter to Spring, which is generally the best time to do a cleanse. This can also be a good time to get an early start on your spring cleaning.

The exact time of the Full Moon will be 2:54pm Universal Time; you can find out what that is in your time zone by clicking here.
