Discovery provides potential target for vaccines, treatments

Scientists have solved the structure of a protein that helps a common respiratory virus evade the immune system. The researchers have identified critical parts of the protein that could be targeted with drugs or vaccines, opening up the possibility of preventing or treating an infection that sickens thousands of babies and elderly people every year.

By age 2, most children have been infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which usually causes only mild cold symptoms. But people with weakened immune systems, such as infants and the elderly, can face serious complications, including pneumonia and in some cases death.

Now, scientists studying the virus, led by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, have found clues to how RSV causes disease. They mapped the molecular structure of an RSV protein that interferes with the bodys ability to fight off the virus. Knowing the structure of the protein will help them understand how the virus impedes the immune response, potentially leading to a vaccine or treatment for this common infection.

We solved the structure of a protein that has eluded the field for quite some time, said Daisy Leung, PhD, an assistant professor of pathology and immunology, and of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and the studys co-senior author. Now that we have the structure, were able to see what the protein looks like, which will help us define what it does and how it does it. And that could lead, down the road, to new targets for vaccine or drug development.

The study is published June 30 in Nature Microbiology.

Each year in the United States, more than 57,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized due to RSV infection, and about 14,000 adults older than 65 die from it.

There is no approved vaccine for RSV and treatment is limited the antiviral drug ribavirin is used only in the most severe cases because it is expensive and not very effective so most people with RSV receive supportive care to make them more comfortable while their bodies fight off the virus.

For people with weakened immune systems, though, fighting RSV can be tough because the virus can fight back. Scientists have long known that a non-structural RSV protein is key to the viruss ability to evade the immune response. However, the structure of that protein, known as NS1, was unknown. Without seeing what the protein looked like, scientists were unable to determine exactly how NS1 interfered with the immune system.

Its an enigmatic protein. Everybody thinks it does many different things, but weve never had a framework to study how and why the protein does what it does, said co-senior author Gaya Amarasinghe, PhD, an associate professor of pathology and immunology.

Leung, Amarasinghe and colleagues used X-ray crystallography a technique that involves crystallizing the protein, bouncing X-rays off it, and analyzing the resulting patterns to determine the 3-D structure of NS1. Then, in a detailed analysis of the structure, they identified a piece of the protein, known as the alpha 3 helix, which might be critical for suppressing the immune response.

To test their hypothesis, the researchers created different versions of the NS1 protein, some with the alpha 3 helix region intact, and some with it mutated. In collaboration with others Rohit Pappu, PhD, the Edwin H. Murty Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Michael Holtzman, MD, the Selma and Herman Seldin Professor of Medicine, Maxim Artyomov, PhD, an assistant professor of pathology and immunology, and Christopher Basler, PhD, of Georgia State University they tested the functional impact of helix 3 and created a set of viruses containing the original or the mutant NS1 genes, and measured the effect on the immune response when they infected cells with these viruses.

They found that the viruses with the mutated helix region did not suppress the immune response while the ones with the intact helix region did.

One of the surprising things we found was that this protein does not target just one set of genes related to the immune response, but it globally modulates the immune response, said Amarasinghe, also an associate professorof molecular microbiology, and of biochemistry and molecular biophysics.

The findings show that the alpha 3 helix region is necessary for the virus to dial the bodys immune response down. By suppressing the immune response, the virus gives itself a better chance of surviving and multiplying, or in other words, of causing disease. RSV usually can only cause disease in people whose immune systems are already weak, so a vaccine or treatment that targets the alpha 3 helix to prevent immune suppression may be just what people need to be able to successfully fight off the virus, the researchers said.

Cleveland Clinic researchers have uncovered a biological link between gut bacteria metabolism and obesity. The team showed that blocking a specific intestinal microbial pathway can prevent obesity and insulin resistance, as well as cause fat tissue to become more metabolically active. The study was recently published in Cell Reports.

The research team, led by J. Mark Brown, Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, studied the metabolic pathway that creates trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), a chemical produced by gut bacteria during digestion of key nutrients - choline, lecithin and carnitine - found abundantly in animal products, such as red meat, processed meats, egg yolks and liver.

Dr. Brown's colleague on the current study - Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D. - previously showed that high levels of TMAO are associated with a higher risk of severe cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke.

Since cardiovascular disease and obesity are so closely linked, the team hypothesized that TMAO may also be involved in metabolic pathways that lead to obesity. They focused on a host enzyme called flavin-containing monooxygenase 3(FMO3), which converts TMAO into its active form. They discovered that mice that had a missing or deactivated FMO3 gene were protected from obesity, even when fed a high-fat, high-calorie diet. Furthermore, the FMO3-negative mice showed higher expression of genes associated with beige or brown fat cells, which are more metabolically active than white fat cells.

The study confirmed in 435 patients that high levels of TMAO are associated with higher incidence of Type 2 diabetes.

"Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease are strongly linked. While the microbiome has been shown to affect cardiovascular disease, there is as yet no concrete evidence of precisely how gut bacteria influence obesity," Brown said. "These findings shed light on a possible way to manipulate the microbiome with therapeutics to combat our obesity and diabetes epidemic."

Brown is a member of the scientific staff in the Lerner Research Institute's Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine. Rebecca Schugar, PhD, is first author on the publication in Cell Reports.

"Given the numerous strong associations of the gut microbe-driven TMAO pathway with human disease, this work has broad implications for drug discovery efforts targeting gut microbes themselves," said Dr. Hazen, chair of the Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine for the Lerner Research Institute and section head of Preventive Cardiology & Rehabilitation in the Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic. "However, additional work is needed to better understand the entire pathway and the links between TMA, FMO3, TMAO and human health."

TMAO is a byproduct of bacterial digestion of choline, lecithin and carnitine, nutrients that are especially abundant in animal products such as red meat, processed meats and liver. Dr. Hazen, who also holds the Jan Bleeksma Chair in Vascular Cell, has previously linked TMAO to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and has shown it can be a powerful tool for predicting future heart attacks, stroke and death in multiple patient populations. Dr. Hazen is an inventor of a test for TMAO that was licensed to Cleveland HeartLab, Inc., a Cleveland Clinic spin-off company. Dr. Hazen and Cleveland Clinic would benefit financially from sales of the test.

Alkermes Announces Positive Preliminary Phase 3 Results for … – Drug Discovery & Development

Alkermes announced positive preliminary topline results from ENLIGHTEN-1, the first of two key phase 3 studies in the ENLIGHTEN clinical development program for ALKS 3831, an investigational, novel, once-daily, oral atypical antipsychotic drug candidate for the treatment of schizophrenia. ENLIGHTEN-1 was a multinational, double-blind, randomized, phase 3 study that evaluated the antipsychotic efficacy, safety and tolerability of ALKS 3831 compared to placebo over four weeks in 403 patients experiencing an acute exacerbation of schizophrenia. The study also included a comparator arm of olanzapine, an established atypical antipsychotic agent with proven efficacy. The study met the prespecified primary endpoint, with ALKS 3831 demonstrating statistically significant reductions from baseline in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores compared to placebo (p<0.001). Data from the study also showed that olanzapine achieved similar improvements from baseline PANSS scores, compared to placebo (p=0.004). The study also met its key secondary endpoint of improvement on the Clinical Global Impression Severity (CGI-S) scale for ALKS 3831 versus placebo (p=0.002). ALKS 3831 is designed to provide the strong antipsychotic efficacy of olanzapine and a differentiated safety profile with favorable weight and metabolic properties.

The positive results of ENLIGHTEN-1 provide clear evidence of the safety, tolerability and antipsychotic efficacy of ALKS 3831 in a large, randomized registration trial, saidElliot Ehrich, M.D., Executive Vice President of Research and Development atAlkermes. The previous John Deere (round)baling record was set in 2012; it stood at 127 bales/hour. It was set using oneof the companys900 Series balers.

Its worth noting that 127 bales/hour equates to 27 or 28 seconds per bale.

The company says that it has since beaten that record, though it wont reveal by exactly how much until it makes that pronouncement in August of this year. In the meantime, John Deere is asking its customers or indeed anyone who can get their hands on one of its 900 Series balers to have a go.

There are some prizes up for grabs; its not just about the glory. Alas, these are limited to oddities such as pressure washers or robotic lawn mowers all bearing John Deere logos of course.

What are the instructions for budding, would-be winners? John Deere is asking participants to: grab a camera or smartphone; start baling; film the escapade in landscape mode with assistance where possible; upload the video to its special Baler Challenge website; and in time see how the results shape up.

There are already sample entries uploaded from enthusiastic participants overseas in Germany and France.

John Deere is running the initiative in a bid to highlight the apparent speed at which its 900 Series balers can operate. That, says the company, is thanks tothe machines innovative approach to bale ejection.

The so-called Fast Release System employs a lightweight rear tailgate that is 40% lighterthan a conventional baler tailgate, allowing it to open and close much faster. This, claims the company, contributes to the balers overall speed of operation.

Back in 2012, a Comprima F125XC fired out no less than 149 bales in 60 minutes tacklingwheaten straw on a farm in Germany.28t of straw were baled during the record-setting feat.

Will we see a new record set for the most round bales made in a single hour? Indeed, could it even be set here in Ireland? It would probably need to be a big, square field not plagued by a myriad of ill-placed telephone poles or, worse still, pylons. In any case, only time will tell.

Group promoting traditional Chinese medicine thinks outside the box to gain wider acceptance – Business in Vancouver

On the 25th anniversary of its founding, one of the strongest proponent groups of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in B.C. said its redoubling its efforts for the practice to gain wider acceptance within the current health-care system.

Gary Ho, CEO and founder of Tzu Chi Foundation Canada, said the Buddhist-philanthropy group (with original ties to the Taiwanese community) has made progress in the last year, largely by reaching out to certain demographics in need of health care outside of existing avenues, but would like provincial lawmakers to consider the benefits of TCM beyond niche markets.

TCM has a big potential in reducing B.C.s current medical expenses, Ho said, adding that he would like to see Tzu Chis clinics in B.C. hospitals one day as part of Medical Services Plan-covered treatments.

The benefits of TCM, which tends to be non-invasive, can be found in the shortening of the rehab period after a patients chemotherapy, the avoidance of certain surgeries where alternative treatments are available, and beyond. And the reduced cost means more people would have access to care.

B.C. has a long history of supporting TCM in Canada. Acupuncture one of TCMs signature treatments has been a designated health profession under the provinces Health Professions Act since 1996, and TCM itself was designated as a health profession in 2000. Both are regulated by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC.

But many industry officials feel progress has stalled in recent years. Despite commitments to establishing an environment for a TCM school at a public post-secondary institution in the 2013 throne speech, the first such occurrence an acupuncture diploma program launched at Kwantlen Polytechnic University last July remains a two-year program limited to only one aspect of TCM (instead of the originally planned four-year program).

Some industry observers have also noted that the exclusion of TCM from the provincial Medical Services Plan makes it challenging for an increasing number of TCM doctors to find adequate market space to find patients and serve the community a challenge also facing Tzu Chi since it owns the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Vancouver, which graduates a new class of practitioners every year.

Currently, provincial statistics put the median annual salary of a TCM doctor at $19,890.

Thats why, Ho said, Tzu Chi has been focused on public awareness in the last few years. The groups team of doctors has been holding consultation clinics at the annual TaiwanFest in downtown Vancouver every summer, reaching approximately 1,000 people annually. The philanthropy group also focuses efforts on the aforementioned targeted demographics to reach communities that may be more receptive to TCM.

One such demographic, officials say, is the First Nations community, and Tzu Chi has been holding regular clinics at such communities in Sumas, Seabird Island, Abbotsford and Nanaimo.

Ho said First Nations patients tend to have a higher acceptance level of herbal treatments, which comprise a large part of TCM practices, making the outreach to those communities a natural fit.

On May 9, when Tzu Chi established a health centre in Nanaimo for TCM clinics with the help of Simon Fraser University (SFU) and First Nations officials, the opening drew 74 patients on that day alone, demonstrating the existence of demand for such a service in the community.

They came with long-standing, chronic conditions. In almost every case, we were able to do something to improve their conditions, Ho said. We are not saying this is the be-all and end-all of medical treatments, that this can cure anything. But what it does do is it gives patients another option, another choice.

Whats more important, however, is that these clinics are co-operative efforts involving partners like SFU that will conduct research into TCM from a third-party point-of-view, which Ho said will be important for the practice to achieve widespread acceptance.

He also noted another effort a clinic held twice a week at Vancouver Coastal Healths Raven Song Community Health Centre as an example of the type of moves that will propel the local TCM movement forward.

Our hope is to have TCM treatment from Tzu Chi clinics within the B.C. health-care systems, directly found in hospitals themselves, he said.

This type of co-operation is crucial for us, because we are not doing this by ourselves. We are essentially working with government, academia and the communities themselves, and it involves research beyond clinical treatment from a respected third party that reflects on our authenticity in trying to help.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - In this weeks Health Alert, we tell you about the risks of hiking, a new study that says parents give their kids the wrong dose of medicine and how kids with hands on dads benefit in life.

Going hiking this summer or just working in your own backyard, beware of flea and tick bites.

Our mild winter has allowed ticks to thrive and emerge earlier than usual and with ticks come the danger of Lyme disease.

When you take that walk: wear insect repellant with DEET or permethrin. Wear high socks and long pants. And when you return, do a tick check for yourself and both a flea and tick check for your pets.

A worrisome new study finds most parents are giving their children the wrong dose of medicine. More than 80 percent made one dosing error. And among all errors, about 12 percent involved an overdose.

But when parents had dosing implements, like an oral syringe that's the right size, the error rate was much lower. That was also the case for parents who got text and pictogram dosing instructions.

Kids with hands on dads are less likely to be obese. Scientists from John Hopkins Harvard Universities tracked nearly four-thousand children from ages 2 - 4.

Fathers who took part in regular child care like outdoor play, putting them to bed or giving them a bath were 33 percent less likely to be obese.

Experts say when fathers play an active role in caregiving, mothers are less stressed which in turn improves children's wellbeing and diet.

Construction begins on first of three buildings to replace U. Med … – Salt Lake Tribune

The ambulatory care complex will house 125 exam, procedure and consult rooms and is expected to support 100,000 new outpatient visits per year, according to the U. Currently, ambulatory care is housed in the medical school building and has 114 exam and procedure rooms.

U. officials said Friday the new building won't serve a significantly higher number of patients, but that it will increase efficiency. Exam rooms, for example, can be used by any department at any time instead of being designated to a specific department as is currently the case, said Kathy Wilets, U. spokeswoman.

Mary Beth Scholand, outpatient chief value officer in the U.'s Department of Internal Medicine, said Friday that officials tried to design the building to improve patient experience.

The focus was "to create a pleasant, inviting space for our patients, where they feel comfortable and where clinic flow is efficient and easy," Scholand said. "And I think we've achieved this."

Construction on a 170,000 square-foot rehabilitation hospital, also currently housed in the medical school building, will begin in about six months and is estimated to cost $95 million. Funding for this building will come from operating revenue bonds and private donations.

The rehab hospital also will be completed in summer 2019. Once patients are moved from the medical school building to the two new buildings, the medical school will be demolished. This is expected to cost $12 million and take six months, officials said.

At that point, construction will begin on the third and final building. The 350,000 square-foot Medical Education and Discovery building will go up where the current medical school is located. It will house the medical school, the Global Health Institute and "collaborative spaces for clinicians, researchers and students," according to the U.'s website.

Officials estimate the building will cost $185 million, paid for through $50 million from the state Legislature and $135 million of private donations. The expected completion date is the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

"After about 2021, there's not going to be any other place to build on this campus," Betz joked Friday.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Gordon Crabtree, CFO and interim CEO of U. Health, recognition of former Health Sciences Vice President Vivian Lee's contributions to the project was met with applause.

Lee resigned in April after weeks of turmoil that began with her firing of Huntsman Cancer Institute CEO and director Mary Beckerle, who later was reinstated by the U. President David Pershing. Betz, Lee's predecessor, quickly was brought in to serve in her role until a permanent replacement is picked.

"Without [Lee's] community involvement, legislative support and vision for these facilities, this whole transformation initiative would not have gained traction and we thank her for that," Crabtree said.

Birmingham native crowned Miss DC, preparing for medical school – Birmingham Times

Briana Kinsey grew up performing on stages and in summer camps around Birmingham. Now as the newly crowned Miss District of Columbia, the Hoover native prepares for the biggest stage of her life the Miss America Pageant.

Im just thankful for the opportunity, she said. There are a lot of deadlines, and there is a lot of work to do, but its all worth it.

Shes balancing her pageant participation with a hectic schedule that includes working in a doctors office and studying at American University in preparation for medical school.

Participating in the Miss America Pageant has been a longtime dream for Kinsey, who has competed in the Miss Alabama Pageant five times and was first runner-up in 2015. She decided to compete in the Miss District of Columbia pageant after moving to the area last year.

While the cameras often focus on the glitter of fashionable clothes and the shining lights of the talent stage, the pageant for Kinsey is more about her personal platform, goals and the college scholarships, she said.

My platform is Daring to Defeat Diabetes, and Im committed to that, whether Im in a pageant or not, she said. Its my lifes mission.

Kinsey has raised thousands for diabetes research and awareness, and she has also enlisted youngsters in helping spread the word.

Every day more than 29.1million Americans deal with diabetes, she said. I have a family history with the disease both on my mothers side and my fathers side.

She knows diabetes can be deadly, but says it can also be prevented with changes in diet and lifestyle.

Currently, Kinsey is taking post-baccalaureate classes to prepare for medical school. She plans to become a pediatric endocrinologist.

Kinsey graduated from Hoover High School and went on to the University of Alabama where she majored in Biology.

The Village

Kinseys parents Robert and Dr. Velda Pugh Kinsey quickly reflect on the village when talking about their daughters success, referring to the African proverb It takes a village to raise a child.

So many people have encouraged and supported Briana over the years, her mother said.

At Sixth Avenue Baptist Church she grew up singing in the childrens choirs and the youth choir. She also took dance and piano and was captain of the dance team at Hoover High School.

Her teachers and coaches took time to help Briana develop her skills.

We tried sports for a while. Gymnastics didnt work, her mother said. But performing helped young Briana shake off some of her early shyness. On stage she took to singing, dancing and acting.

She began competing in pageants around 13 years old.

She chose to participate in pageants that were more about poise, her mother said. Some of the early pageants didnt include makeup.

That experience laid a foundation.

Whats Next

Briana Kinsey will return to Birmingham in late July to host a Mother/Daughter Tea at Samford University. Its a fundraiser for the Childrens Miracle Network, the national charitable focus this year for the Miss America Pageant.

Briana wants to share her experiences and encourage other young ladies and their families, her mother said. Set your goals, and with the help of God and the village, you can keep achieving.

UB medical school welcomes 190 new physicians to WNY – University at Buffalo Reporter

One hundred and ninety newly minted MDs marked a critical milestone in their professional lives earlier this week when they became medical residents of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

After graduation from medical school, medical residents are matched with a residency program, where they train in a medical or surgical specialty from three to seven years.The residents who took part in the long white coat ceremony on June 27 in the Center for Tomorrow chose to start their careers as physicians in Buffalo at UB. They will provide patient care under the supervision of UB medical school faculty in Western New Yorks hospitals and clinics.

The long white coat is not only a symbol of the profession, but it also symbolizes the trust patients place in their physicians and the responsibility to act professionally while serving patients and the public, says Roseanne Berger, senior associate dean for graduate medical education in the medical school and associate professor of family medicine.

To celebrate the transition, UBs newest medical residents donned the long white coats that indicate they have graduated from medical school, leaving behind the short white coats they received when they entered medical school.

At the ceremony, medical residents recited the Hippocratic Oath and the UB Resident Code of Conduct.The ceremony took place on Education Day, during which residents received information on topics ranging from health issues in Buffalos population and communication and cultural issues to patient privacy, quality improvement and safety. There also was a focus on resident well-being, highlighting institutional support resources and advice from current residents.

It was part of UBs five-day medical resident orientation, which includes background on UB, the Western New York community, its population and its health care systems. During orientation, residents visited UB-affiliated teaching hospitals, interacted with program faculty and, in some cases, worked with UBs Clinical Competency Center to assess interactions, with actors playing patients. Before arriving on campus, residents completed online tutorials, including modules on addiction, pain medicine and safe prescribing practices.

This years class of residents of 81 women and 109 men includes 120 U.S. citizens and 70 citizens of at least 17 other countries, including 24 from Canada, nine from Pakistan and six from India.

Forty of the new residents are UB alumni 32 graduated from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and eight graduated from the School of Dental Medicine.

The long white coat ceremony was planned in collaboration with UBs Richard Sarkin/Emeritus Faculty Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, which launched the tradition of holding white coat ceremonies in the 1990s to symbolize that humanism remains at the core of all medical care.UB is one of only 14 medical residency programs in the U.S. that is home to a residency chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

AUSTIN (KXAN) The University of Texass Dell Medical School welcomed its newest class Thursday. Only one percent of applicants were accepted into the program and most of them are from Texas and women.

Each one has a special reason for attending medical school. As a kid, Hannah Rosenthal spent hours in doctors appointments. She wasnt sick, it was for her big sister, Rebecca.

She has whats called West Syndrome, Rosenthal said. She had seizures when she was a baby. It left her severely neurologically impaired.

It is one reason why Rosenthal, an Army veteran, is part of the incoming class of Dell Medical students.

She had some great doctors, she said. That really drew me to medicine.

Rosenthal is one of 50 students in the class, 60 percent of whom are women. That is higher than the 49 percent national average of other medical schools.

Twenty-three-year-old Tucker Pope grew up watching his mother treat patients. It was the inspiration he needed to apply to the program.The Lubbock resident is like 90 percent of the class, who are from Texas.

I want to practice my career here and I want to be here helping the people of Texas, Pope said.

Altogether the incoming class has racked up hours of community service, research and health care activities, like shadowing doctors and volunteering at nursing homes before they were accepted into the program.

Spending time working with adults who have parents who financially and physically cannot support them, thats what really opened my eyes, Rosenthal said, who volunteered at a residential center for people with special needs in Houston. Working at the center, I had trouble sleeping at night when I truly realized how big of an issue it was.

All of the students receive some form of financial assistance, including scholarships to attend medical school. Nearly 20 percent are minorities underrepresented in medicine. Nearly 5,000 people applied for the program this year. Classes begin on Monday.

In defense of our liberty – Black Hills Pioneer

On this upcoming Independence Day, we celebrate our rights of liberty and democracy. As Americans we do not take kindly to the government or anyone else trying to manipulate or control our movements, choices, or thoughts.

On that particular note, I feel compelled to speak out against what is happening to our liberty through the manipulation of the national press by those in our federal government.

In mid-June, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer began restricting members of the national press from using video cameras and from live broadcasting (audio or video) at White House news briefings.

What is the reasoning or justification for this restriction? Is this a way to try to control and shape what is being reported by a free and independent press?

This comes at a time when only hand-picked reporters are called on at the news briefings and our president chooses to use Twitter to communicate rather than taking questions directly from reporters.

Does the American public understand how dangerous this precedent is to our free flow of information and holding governmental officials accountable? Do you even care?

Today its cameras; tomorrow its audio recorders; next its pen and paper? No matter which political party you side with, I hope you understand this is a threat to OUR democracy.

As professional journalists, accessibility to ask questions of elected officials is crucial in the function of our duties to inform and watchdog for the citizens of our republic. Governmental transparency in the workings of elected officials is also paramount to our job.

So what can you do as a citizen?

On a LOCAL LEVEL:

Demand that your local governmental officials stay transparent. This means proper advance notification be given to the public for any meetings, and that they continue to be required to publish legal notices of all proceedings in the local hard copy newspaper.

The official record of proceedings should not be kept online on some obscure governmental website, susceptible to hacking or changes. You have a right to know what they have done as reported by an independent third-party newspaper that is accountable for every word we produce.

This may sound self-serving, but its true: Stay informed, buy a subscription to your local newspaper, and read it. Thats how local journalism gets financed and thats how you have the power of solid factual information that impacts you.

Watch local news on TV and listen to local news on the radio you should always have several sources to make sure youre getting the whole story.

STATE LEVEL:

Tell your state legislators that open government is important to you. Contact them to show your support for open government legislation anytime the chance arises.

Executive sessions and meetings, which shut out the public and the media, should be the rare exception.

NATIONALLY:

On a national level, send your congressional delegation an email or letter. In the subject line, make sure it says Voter from (your district). Explain to them why you think restricting media access is bad practice, bad government, and bad for our democracy.

The media is here for YOU, but we cannot fight this fight alone. Government officials need to know you are watching and that you are counting on professional journalists to report information in a fair and accurate manner and they can not do that if they are unnecessarily restricted by the White House or any other governmental body.

This is a country still governed by the people for the people, and none of us can afford to have apathy towards what is happening. Its time for all of us to take a stance in the defense of liberty and democracy.

This quote by the American writer Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) sums it up well for me: To sin by silence, when we should protest, makes cowards out of men.

David Hegg: With liberty and justice for all – Santa Clarita Valley Signal

Imagine if Abraham Lincoln were alive today and presented his Gettysburg Address before a gathered audience.

Imagine the response to his opening line: Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Of course, most of the reporters in the audience would immediately fact check to find his dates are all wrong, this being 2017, and they would lead with that.

Some activists would cringe at the offensive nature of saying the USA was a new nation given there were American Indian nations already living throughout the land. Pro-choice advocates would rail against his insertion of conceived, as though creating a life was worth caring about.

And his assertion humanity was created clearly a religious, anti-scientific notion would headline several articles declaring Mr. Lincoln too radical in his religious beliefs.

But the greatest outcry would be against his insensitive, insulting, and discriminatory use of men as if women were not as equal as men. How dare he!

Across the nation, those who are ever vigilant to spot microaggressions those imperceptible offenses only they can define would leap to the forefront of the supposed battle for equality. Honest Abe would become the newest enemy to those convinced the greatest freedom we have in America is the right never to be offended.

And they would miss the whole point of the speech. They would be clueless to the fact that meaning in every treatise or speech begins with understanding what the speaker intended the audience to understand from the words he used.

They would interpret his verbiage through the grid of their own bias and be so fixated on using the speech to further their own agenda that they would hardly hear the rest of his words.

They would miss the stirring rhetoric that has stood through the years as one of the greatest tributes to those who don the uniform and bear arms in defense of true freedom.

I bring this up as we look forward to Independence Day because I believe our nation is being hijacked by those who insist no one is free to think, believe, or express their views if there is any chance someone will be offended.

They are bold in declaring the fight is against discrimination of any kind, and yet they are practicing the greatest form of discrimination possible a prejudice against individual thought and expression unless it aligns with their ideology.

Since when do other people get to decide what I can think and say? And since when do they have the right to define what opinions I can have based on my age, sex, race or religious affiliation?

Since when is it right to lambast a Christian for holding Christian views in a nation that has some level of Christian roots? Since when can you tell an African-American, or a bald, Caucasian pastor, or a female college freshman, what he or she must think?

Believing a persons sex, race, orientation or religious commitment defines the acceptable limits of opinions he or she may hold is both prejudicial and reductionist. This may be the worst kind of discrimination.

Of course, it is never right to intentionally offend or demean others. And certainly, a good ethical foundation puts civility at the top of the list.

But the coin has two sides. It seems impossible not to offend those who walk around hoping to be offended no matter how hard we try.

When President Lincoln stood in the Gettysburg cemetery, he was championing real freedoms worth dying to protect. Mark this down. The right to go through life and never be offended is neither a right nor a rational expectation.

No soldier would die for that, but many have died for the foundational belief that God has endowed each of us with basic human rights.

We would do well not to let identity politics and the thought police expand those rights to include making sure everyone thinks the same thing. If we do, you can be sure well never see another Abraham Lincoln. He would simply be too offensive.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness U.S. Declaration of Independence Preamble, 1776

More than 240 years later, the Negro still is not free. Not free to live without fear of being shot. Not free to live without being murdered by a cop.

Not free to live life the way you can when you are American in white not black skin. This is my American sin.

As sure as my American flag flutters in the summer wind, I am cognizant of this truth. Always painfully aware of the skin Im in.

OPINION

Mindful of the glass house of liberty always susceptible to being suddenly shattered by bricks of hate hurled sometimes seemingly at every turn in this psychosocial maze. By the insults, innuendo and racial realities that pelt or painfully graze.

By the hard truth that will not allow me to forget that for blacks in America justice surely has been too long delayed. That it aint right. It just is. And that this unholy matrimony of racial inequality was perhaps sealed long ago with this nations kiss.

I am aware of the prevailing pre-narrative about black folks in America. About every black male slain by thug or cop. That he must have had coming what he eventually got.

It is a demented tale about who we are and whence we came. That perceives our worth and existence as inconsequential and counts us as Americas bane.

The justification for the killing of us, therefore, is still simple and plain. Whether Philando Castile. Eric Garner or Tamir Rice. Sandra Bland. Or Trayvon Martin There is still no justice for black life.

This great hate is pervasive even among my own. Brothers slaying brothers, perpetuating hatreds song aware that black life still means less. That the names of slain black children we soon forget.

That you can get away with murder because the powers that be dont really care. As long as we keep it in the hood and it doesnt spill over there.

Here lately, amid this perennial bloodshed, I am at a loss for words. As Independence Day approaches, I find it absurd that freedoms bell still does not ring for us. After all these years, and great strides: from the 13th Amendment to Civil Rights to the end of segregation on the bus.

Liberty is still a game of cat and mouse. Racism remains at the foundation of this American house.

This is my story, my lament, my song as a black man in America continuing to sojourn

I awake to the fire of anxiety coursing through my veins. To news of the latest black homicide and the reality that the common denominator in the murder and destruction of us whether by police or by my own brothers is us.

My soul is singed by the fires of hate: Our own self-hate. By Americas hypocrisy of hate that kisses the flag but spits in the face of citizens of color who are denied life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That embraces some sons and daughters more, and others less.

By one nation under God that praises a loving, righteous Creator on Sunday. But, come Monday, is devoid of compassion for people of all races and creeds. That sees the transgressions and faults of others. But is blind to its own misdeeds.

Acquittal after acquittal, murder after murder, I am reminded that absent from testimony are the words of my sisters and brothers who were slain. How I wish they could speak their piece from their graves.

How I wish this flag I love waved boldly for them and me. How I hope that someday it will come to symbolize we are all finally free.

Rolling Stone has a fascinating piece on Tim Gill, the mega-donor who pumped more than $422 million of his fortune into the cause of equal rights for the gay community.

One of his main goals was to block religious liberty bills in state legislatures across the nation that critics saw as thinly-veiled attempts to legalize discrimination against same-sex couples.

And one of the groups biggest battlegrounds was Georgia, where Republican lawmakers had pushed for years to adopt a version of the measure and in 2016 aimed to finish the job.

From Rolling Stone:

In response, the Gill Foundation helped form a new front group called Georgia Prospers, and settled on a strategy that eschewed noisy, colorful protests in favor of a state-centric approach led by businesses. You can get money from outside, Gill explains, but the state has to own it. Gill also knew the importance of finding the right face for the effort, in this case, Ronnie Chance, a former Republican state Senate majority leader under the current governor, Nathan Deal.

In January 2016, Georgia Prospers kicked off with more than 100 businesses signed on, including Coca-Cola, Google and Marriott. As the RFRA fight played out in Atlanta, Chances phone never stopped ringing, he says, with companies clamoring to sign his groups pro-equality pledge. But the full genius of the approach wasnt clear to him until another dad at his daughters basketball practice mentioned reading about the effort in a companywide e-mail. The man worked at Delta, which had joined Georgia Prospers and was mobilizing employees to call their representatives. Lawmakers, Chance realized, were hearing organically from their constituents who may be employed by Home Depot or Delta Air Lines.

The measure passed in March 2016 with the help of House Speaker David Ralston and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. It was vetoed days after the sessions end by Gov. Nathan Deal, who said the state does not have to discriminate against anyone to protect the faith-based community.

An effort to revive it again this year went nowhere, this time amid staunch opposition from Cagle, Ralston and Deal.

Rolling Stone called it the first major victory for what Gill calls his Southern strategy.

We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive commentary for a general readership. By screening submissions, we provide a space where readers can share intelligent and informed commentary that enhances the quality of our news and information.

While most comments will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive, moderating decisions are subjective. We will make them as carefully and consistently as we can. Because of the volume of reader comments, we cannot review individual moderation decisions with readers.

We value thoughtful comments representing a range of views that make their point quickly and politely. We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments either by the same reader or different readers

We follow the same standards for taste as the daily newspaper. A few things we won't tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING. Don't include URLs to Web sites.

We do not edit comments. They are either approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment that is quoted or excerpted in an article. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation.

We welcome strong opinions and criticism of our work, but we don't want comments to become bogged down with discussions of our policies and we will moderate accordingly.

We appreciate it when readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts point out errors of fact or emphasis and will investigate all assertions. But these suggestions should be sent via e-mail. To avoid distracting other readers, we won't publish comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or in an article.
