The anti-mosque Mukilteo aerospace exec enters politics – The Daily Herald

MUKILTEO Around 7 a.m. on a Friday in mid-June, Peter Zieve settled in at an outside table at Starbucks and started reading the newspaper.

The franchise is down the road from Electroimpact Inc., the company he founded and developed into a successful aerospace firm with the Boeing Co. one of its best customers.

On that day, hed come to discuss his run for a seat on the Mukilteo City Council. Its his maiden venture into electoral politics and, like much surrounding Zieve this past couple of years, it is stirring things up in the community.

His campaign is built on a platform of conservative and populist ideas that he enunciates bluntly and brashly, an approach not too dissimilar to that of Republican President Donald Trump, to whose campaign Zieve, a Republican, gave $1 million.

Zieve, 63, said he opposes new taxes, wants less government intrusion on private property rights and more athletic facilities for young people.

He said hes angry at the raft of regulations imposed on him when he constructed a lighted sports court at his home and wants to reel in the city. He wants to axe funding for the city job held by Marko Liias, a Democratic state senator, convinced its wrong for Mukilteo to pay someone already drawing a state salary. He supports helping homeless individuals with services to regain their footing but warns of an impending invasion of homeless camps that threaten the fabric of the city unless deterred by legal force.

Zieve is competing against incumbent Councilman Bob Champion and Tina Over for the Position 2 seat in the Aug. 1 primary. The two who finish with the most votes will advance to the general election in November.

While Zieve talked of what he wants to do if elected, those opposing his candidacy focus on what he did to incite division in the community around a proposed Islamic Center, an investigation of his companys treatment of employees, and a public conversation about his turbulent family life.

Last year Zieve undertook a secret campaign until he was found out against the mosque because he feared it would become a haven for terrorists. He later dropped his opposition and apologized for riling up residents with postcards sent anonymously raising concerns about the center.

This year a probe of alleged employee discrimination at Electroimpact resulted in a $485,000 fine against the firm. That probe by the state attorney general concluded Zieve, who is Jewish, refused to hire Muslim applicants, harassed workers based on their religious faith and rewarded employees who married and had children.

And, of late, the intersection of Zieves marital conflicts and the court system has become fodder for the campaign, especially his behavior, which at times allegedly terrified his 45-year-old wife.

In 2011, Zieve spent a night in jail following a heated argument with Mariya Morozova-Zieve during which he sprayed Windex in her eyes, according to court documents. He was arrested on a domestic violence assault charge that was later dismissed.

A year earlier, she tried to leave him, traveling to Anaheim, California, with their three young sons. When Zieve found them and confronted her in a hotel room, a fight ensued. This time, she went to jail and the assault charge was dropped. In late 2015, she started to legally end their relationship, only to drop that in early 2016.

Zieve came prepared for questions. He brought a stack of paper, including a picture of him and the chief promoter of the mosque, a list of the companys minority employees and a few notes demonstrating his familys unity.

He sounded confident those matters wont sway voters.

They know me. People know where my beliefs are. I may be one of the best known in the community, he said. If they vote for me, its a pretty big statement.

There are 14,173 registered voters in Mukilteo and as of Tuesday 10 percent of them had returned their ballots, according to the Snohomish County Auditors Office.

Mosque is just not an issue

Zieve founded Electroimpact in 1986 and is its chief executive officer. The company moved to Mukilteo in 1992 and Zieve said he moved into the city in 2007. Records show he bought his current home in 2008.

Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson has a broader perspective of him than many public officials because her husband works at Zieves company. She said she has seen the aerospace executive as an eccentric genius. He is often inappropriate, sometimes funny and, until his actions with the mosque, mostly harmless.

Gregerson said she knew of Zieves concerns about the mosque and sought to keep him fully informed on how he could make his views on the project known throughout the public review process. She denied his claim that she encouraged him to send out the postcards.

No matter now, Zieve said.

I have had very little feedback about that, he said. Its just not an issue.

When he first heard of the mosque plans, he said, he wanted the leading supporter, Mohammed Riaz Khan to tell me how you are going to make sure it doesnt become a home for terrorism.

Zieve said when he felt there was a plan for it to be community-oriented and safe he ended his opposition.

When asked how the experience might affect him as a public servant if elected, Zieve said, Everything you do in life you learn (something.) I learned. I dont know what I learned exactly.

Regarding the state investigation, Zieve said his son Michael, an Electroimpact executive, kept him out of the process entirely.

I am not happy about what happened to me. I would have fought them to the end of the Earth. It was a witch hunt, he said. (Michael) just wanted it to go away.

He asserted the state investigation found only one employee in the United Kingdom who claimed to have been harmed. A portion of the fine is set aside for restitution to those who can prove they were subject to discrimination. As of Monday, 30 claims had been received and under review, according to an agency spokeswoman.

Regarding the turbulence with his current wife, he said, Were not perfect but were not so bad either.

The night he went to jail he said simply was a bad night. It really was a misunderstanding.

Zieve is the father of six children two with his first wife, one with his second and three with Mariya, who also has a daughter from a previous marriage. The Zieves have been together for roughly a dozen years.

He said the couple married in August 2007, which is what is reflected in some Snohomish County Superior Court records, but contradicted in others.

He faces a scientist and a real estate broker

Zieve launched his campaign with a $50,000 loan and had received no contributions, according to information posted on the Public Disclosure Commission website. He had spent $1,970 on yard signs as of Monday. Hes also paid $6,999 to reserve a billboard on Mukilteo Speedway starting at the end of August.

That assumes hell make it through the primary.

Bob Champion and Tina Over are making their own cases with voters.

Champion, 61, is a staff scientist specializing in in-flight safety equipment at Honeywell Inc. in Redmond. Hes currently the council president and lives a couple of blocks from Zieve.

He said he is seeking a second term to complete work on an update of the citys comprehensive plan.

Champion described himself as a fiscal conservative and wants to continue to provide a steady hand on the citys monetary policy.

He voted against the Sound Transit 3 expansion measure last year because it was too big and too broad, he said. He opposes the citys proposed transportation sales tax increase on this falls ballot saying it is premature. He wants to see how the city spends its current budget allotment of nearly $1 million for road improvements, then consider using general fund dollars or property tax receipts to carry out needed maintenance.

As to Zieve, He and I disagree on social issues, Champion said. I try to focus on my campaign. I dont want to go in a negative direction.

At a forum Monday, candidates were asked to say something nice about their opponents. Champion said Zieve is an entrepreneur whose company pays a lot of taxes to the city.

Thank you Peter, he said, earning a few laughs.

Champion had loaned $5,000 to his campaign as of Monday while Over had not reported any contributions.

Over, 33, is a real estate broker making her first run for public office. She said shes lived in the city for five years.

I did it because I felt Id be good at the position, she said.

Over vowed to be a more assertive voice on the council than the incumbent. If elected, she would bring much needed diversity of age, gender and religion to the panel, she said. Her husband is Muslim, and theyre raising their young son in his faith.

On the issues, Over said she opposes the transportation sales tax hike and wants to see the city tighten its budget belt.

I think there are other places to find the money to fund those road improvements, she said.

She wants to invest money into increasing public safety, assist neighborhoods in dealing with the effects of commercial air service at Paine Field and to ensure the terminal operators and airlines adhere to all agreements for operations.

As for Zieve, she said, she filed to run before he did. His entry added motivation.

I do not want someone like him representing me. The stuff that he stands for I feel is appalling, she said. I dont think hes in it for the community. I just have to knock him out.

City Officials Tour Advanced Aerospace Manufacturing Company In College Point – Western Queens Gazette

With assistance from the city, S&L Aerospace Metals plans to expand and create 20 good-paying industrial jobs.Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO James Patchett toured on July 19 S&L Aerospace Metals, LLC, a premier hydraulic aircraft manufacturing company based in College Point. The city and EDC sold two lots to S&L so it could expand its business, which is adjacent to the lots. The acquisition enables S&L, which currently has 84 full-time workers, to create approximately 20 new advanced manufacturing jobs for local residents.

Founded in 1947, S&L Aerospace Metals, LLC currently assembles metal parts and landing gear and hydraulic assemblies for U.S. Armed Forces and commercial aerospace companies. Their clientele includes the United States Government, Boeing, Raytheon, Helicopter Support, Sikorsky Aircraft, BF Goodrich, Airbus, and more. S&L has provided well-paying jobs for College Point residents for over a decade; a significant majority of the companys employees are foreign born, do not have advanced degrees, and live within a 10-mile radius.

This is the definition of advanced manufacturing: precision parts for Black Hawk helicopters and commercial aviation, made by hands and machines right here in Queens, said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen. This sector has a bright future in New York City, and were investing so that home-grown firms like S&L Aerospace Metals can keep adding good-paying jobs.

New York Citys industrial and manufacturing sectors are critical to a successful economy and provide thousands of jobs for New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. S&L Aerospace Metals revitalization and expansion is an example of how a New York City-born and bred industrial company can survive and adapt to our ever-changing economic climate. By working with businesses like S&L Aerospace Metals, were making sure that our homegrown companies are not only staying here, but are also thriving here.

S&L Aerospace Metals is a great company that has provided steady, good-paying jobs for my constituents in College Point for years. Their expansion and creation of 20 new jobs is a welcome addition to this community, said Council Member Paul Vallone.

S&L Aerospace was founded in New York City in 1947, and its our goal to make sure it continues to grow in New York City. Were proud of our unparalleled reputation and expanding our facility will allow us to keep being one of Americas most reliable aerospace manufacturers, said S&L Aerospace Metals President Jerry Wang and Executive Vice President Ted Varvatsas.

The first phase of construction, the renovation of an existing building, which is adjacent to S&Ls existing facility, is complete. The second phase, the construction of a new building, is anticipated to commence shortly and be complete within a year of commencement. The completion of both phases is expected to deliver approximately 34,000 square feet of new manufacturing space.

The industrial and manufacturing sector is a key focus of Mayor de Blasios jobs plan, New York Works, a series of 25 initiatives that will spur 100,000 jobs with good wages over the next decade. The expansion of S&L Aerospace also builds upon Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viveritos 10-Point Industrial Action Plan, designed to spur the growth industrial and manufacturing businesses that are critical to the citys larger economy, backed by more than $115 million in funding. Both programs will ensure that longstanding businesses and new firms will have the space to grow and evolve, preserving and creating good jobs in New York City.

Orlando Leads In Jobs Surge, Huntsville Flies High In Aerospace – Business Facilities Magazine

Orlando, FL is the top-ranked metro among Employment Leaders in Business Facilities 13th Annual Rankings Report. This category ranks metros with the highest annual percentage of nonfarm job increases per metro area, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics measuring the change in employment during the 12 months between April 2016 and April 2017.

Florida businesses created 262,200 new jobs in 2016, and 54,600 of those jobs were in Orlando. With only 11 percent of Floridas population, the Orlando metro is adding more than 20 percent of the states new jobs. said BF Editor in Chief Jack Rogers. To use a NASCAR analogy, Orlandos got the pole position in the race for new jobs.

Orlando earned the top spot in BFs critical job-creation metric by adding more than 1,000 jobs per week across a broad base of industries, according to payroll employment data released earlier this year by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Orlandos professional and business services industry, which includes legal, accounting, computer systems design, management and administrative services had the largest net gain in 2016 with 13,200 new jobs, outpacing the regions leisure and hospitality industry. However, Rogers noted, Orlando held its own in the tourism and recreation sector: one out of every three leisure and hospitality jobs created in Florida in 2016 was in Orlando. Construction employment also grew at a rapid pace in Orlando, with a 10.4 year-over-year percentage change.

Huntsville, AL is the top-ranked metro in BFs Aerospace/Defense Leaders category, based on BLS employment statistics per metro area for aerospace engineers. Aerospace giant Boeing recently announced its commitment to add 400 jobs and invest $70 million to grow its operations in Huntsville.

As we mark the 48th anniversary of Apollo 11s trip to the moon this month, its worth remembering that many of the most critical components for that mission were built in Huntsville, Rogers said. Our race to the stars may have slowed down a bit, but Huntsville is soaring ahead in the competition for 21st-century jobs.

Business Facilities is a national publication that has been the leading location source for corporate site selectors and economic development professionals for more than 50 years.

GKN H1 profits and revenue up but margins drop, aerospace unimpressive – DIGITALLOOK

Engineer GKN reported a jump in first-half profits on Wednesday as it said it has closed its UK defined pension scheme, but margins were down across the board and the performance of the aerospace division failed to impress.

In the six months to the end of June, pre-tax profit rose to 559m from 182m in the same period a year ago, as sales increased to 4.9bn fro 4.2bn. The company upped its interim dividend by 5% to 3.1p per share.

GKN also said that it has closed its UK defined pension scheme and plans to inject a lump sum of 250m to address the deficit and reduce future deficit recovery payments.

In the aerospace division, the company saw organic sales growth of 1%, as a 3% drop in commercial sales was offset by a 15% increase in military. The driveline business saw organic sales growth of 8%, helped by the group's broad geographic footprint and increased content per vehicle, while the powder metallurgy unit saw organic sales growth of 4%.

Margins were down across all three divisions. The margin in aerospace fell to 9.3% from 9.9% in 2016, partly due to higher UK pension costs, while the trading margin in the Driveline business slipped to 7.8% from 7.9%. Powder Metallurgy saw a drop to 11.3% from 12.6%, reflecting principally the higher raw material surcharge and an investment in powder capability in China.

Chief executive Nigel Stein said: "We made progress in the first half and are on track for the full year. We are performing well against our key markets, demonstrating once again the strength of our businesses, strong market positions and leading technology. We continue to invest for growth and have made significant progress to address our UK pension deficit.

"Our focus on innovation in key areas such as electrified drivetrains, additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0 is paying dividends and underpins our confidence in the longer term.

"2017 is expected to be another year of growth. Our reputation for technological leadership in our key markets, our focus on driving flexibility and productivity through our manufacturing plants and our market leading position in all three divisions mean we are well placed for the future."

At 1010 BST, the shares were down 1.3% to 322.60p, with some analysts suggesting that news of a ban on new diesel and petrol cars in the UK from 2040 could be weighing on the stock.

Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett pointed to the lower margins and the fact that the performance in the aerospace unit was "fine rather than spectacular" as possible reasons behind the move lower.

He added: "The group is alive to the dangers a shift to electric vehicles might pose and an early move into the market has given it a strong position, with 400,000 systems already delivered to the groups global customer base.

Transformer Monitoring Systems (TMS) Market Is Expected to Rise at a Remarkable CAGR by 2024 – Digital Journal

Transparency Market Research Report Add "Transformer Monitoring Systems (TMS) Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast 2016 - 2024" to its database.

This press release was orginally distributed by SBWire

Albany, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/24/2017 -- TMS is defined as a group of components built together in order to sense and monitor various parameters of a pole-mounted transformer or ground transformer that are vital to its functionality. This device is attached to the lines of an existing transformer with minimal effort; it remains non-intrusive to lines and its components. TMS has the capability of monitoring the transformer's voltage, current, temperature, and the phase angle. Voltage sensor consists of a plate, an op-amp, two capacitors, and four resistors. TMS is a real time mounting device that monitors a single transformer. This device paves way for a smarter grid system technology to lower electrical downtime of a power generation unit. TMS accurately and effectively reads/records valuable information about pole mounted and grounded transformers. This information is shared over the wireless connections to a central hub computer located at the transfer stations of sub-stations. It detects failure in power lines.

Obtain Report Details @:http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/transformer-monitoring-system-market.html

Transformer Monitoring Systems: Dynamics and Trends

The problems in methods for powering the device and monitoring the transformer's parameters have been overcome through the usage of induction coils. The voltage passage through the induction coils have the tendency to escalate from the permissible values due to fluctuating current. Voltage regulators are thus used to control the voltage and keep it under the permissible limits. Diodes incorporated with AP1186 standard regulators are used with a battery backup in case of power failure in order to achieve the desired results in voltage regulations. TMS is a safe and easy approach to help combat any loss in power over the lines and any power shortages through its preventive monitoring measures. TMS is kept near a high power line that emits strong electrical and magnetic fields. Power to the TMS device is critical, as voltage, current, and temperature have to be maintained under the permissible limits. Excessive voltage, current, and temperature can destroy the internal components. Sensors of the TMS read voltage and current across the line and the temperature inside the transformer. The sensors then transmit the information to logical components of the system. Wireless technology helps in passage of information to other TMS devices or to the central hub facility. Computer programing is the final last aspect of a TMS device. It helps view information about transformers received by wireless units. The program also provides sight (screen flashing animations) and hearing alerts (siren blasting through speakers).

Transformer Monitoring Systems: Segmentation

The TMS market can be segmented based on type of transformer (pole mounted transformer and ground transformer), method of powering TMS system (solar, battery powered, induction coil, and others), application (distribution transformers, power transformers, and others) and region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa).

Make an Enquiry @: http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/sample/sample.php?flag=B&rep_id=19952

Transformer Monitoring Systems: Region-wise Outlook

Asia Pacific is estimated to be the leading market for TMS. Presence of large number of developing economies, high capacity addition plans, and enactment of supportive policies (tax incentives) are likely to drive the TMS market.

Transformer Monitoring Systems: Key Players

Key players operating in the TMS market include Camlin Power, ICSA (India) Ltd., and CETT Co., Ltd.

Rogers County sheriff discusses ‘politically correct’ culture – KTUL

It's a three page letter with a one sentence summary, political correctness has gone off the rails when it comes to policing (KTUL).

It's a three page letter with a one sentence summary. Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton states political correctness has gone off the rails when it comes to policing.

"I guarantee you, the good, hard working people in Tulsa want to be protected, they don't want the cop that shows up, that's scared to death to do his job, because he'll be prosecuted," he said.

And Walton points out the recent Betty Shelby case as yet another blow to the confidence of law enforcement.

"When the deadly force decision is made and an officer has to use that deadly force, it shouldn't come with an immediate thought of, 'Now, can I withstand the prosecution of that?'" he said.

Walton says the group We the People helps spur an atmosphere of officer apprehension.

"I think it's the most close-minded group of people that exist," Walton said.

"It's unfortunate that he would feel, as if, that we're part of the problem," said Marq Lewis.

From Lewis' perspective, they're simply seeking accountability.

"I think what has happened in the past is that police officers did not have accountability, now we have social media, we have body cameras, we have accountability of people [who] are also watching the police, they're policing the police," he said.

"If you want to get into survival mode as a police officer, you'll be a lot less proactive and the old policeman will tell the young policeman, 'Look junior, if you don't want to get sued, prosecuted and do anything, you hide and wait, and if they call you, go take care of it with the minimum amount of effort and you'll save us all a lot of problems,' and that's pathetic because that's when it's a good day to be a thug," Walton said.

"Any time organizations are holding elected officials accountable, they're always perceived as a problem," said Lewis.

Political correctness be damned – Budapest Times

Oh sorry, the EU decided to give EUR 3 billion to Turkey to assist with efforts to curb the influx of illegal immigrants. Thats a lot of money, right? Well, not really. Germany alone will be spending about EUR 21 billion on handling the crisis and as you may have guessed taxpayers are loving it. Especially since they have to thank the open-arms policy of Angela Merkel, who seems to be aiming for a Nobel Peace Prize. I have plenty of friends who live in Germany both Germans and Hungarians and these days many of them are starting to worry about the decisions their government is making. There are two reasons for their concerns: as in many of the countries who approached the crisis similarly, parties on the far end of the spectrum are gaining strength and, as we know, Germans have had their experience with the far end. Their other issue is security. We all know what went down in Cologne on New Years Eve and a lot of people seem to believe that nothing has really changed since then that would prevent something similar happening again. As a friend of mine put it: the government seems to be more concerned about protecting the migrants than about protecting its own citizens. He thinks that they are worried about political correctness. For those of you who are also worried about political correctness, let me give you an idea where it will lead: in the first US presidential primary in New Hampshire on Tuesday, two anti-establishment and anti-PC candidates hammered the rest of the field. On the Democratic side, socialist definitely a curse word in America Bernie Sanders clobbered Clinton, while Trump came away with more Republican delegates than the rest of the field combined.

Former DOJ Official on Evolution of Corporate Compliance – Bloomberg Big Law Business

ByYin Wilczek, Bloomberg BNA

Hui Chen recently left the Justice Department after almost two years as the departments first-ever compliance counsel. While at the Criminal Divisions Fraud Section, she helped prosecutors evaluate corporate compliance programs in areas such as securities and financial fraud, health-care fraud, and foreign bribery. Her cases at the DOJ included BP PLCs Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Volkswagen AGs emissions scandal, and Odebrecht SAs Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations. Those prosecutions garnered some of the largest corporate fines ever levied by the DOJ. Chen, now a private compliance consultant, speaks to Bloomberg BNA about her former role, and what lies ahead for the Fraud Section.

Hui Chen.

Bloomberg BNA: When you left, what was the state of corporate compliance programs?

Hui Chen:For me to render an assessment on that, essentially youre asking a probation office who handles drunk driver cases how many people drive drunk. If youre not a company thats being investigated, I wont see you in that role. I saw presumably some of the worst, so thats not a representative view.

What I would say is that there is great variation in corporate compliance that goes from companies in large part doing a pretty good job but occasionally slipping, to companies that completely dont get it. There are companies that should be seeing the risk but arent doing anything about it, which I think would be a little bit surprising to some, and I think thats particularly true for companies that operate mainly outside the U.S.

I also think that many companies that are relatively small arent attuned to the risks they face when they expand. So lets say they found a niche market in the U.S. They then jump into opportunities for their niche business in other markets without giving enough thought to what that might mean in terms of business and people risks.

I also see companies that are obsessively focused on their particular regulated risks but are not attentive to fundamental risks.

BBNA: What sorts of fundamental risk?

Chen:Take financial services. There are companies that say, Were going to dot all the `is and cross all the ts, but they dont think that lying to customers is a problem. I think that problem is more widespread than Wells Fargo. So the fundamentals are lying, cheating and stealing, things your mother would have taught you when you were five.

BBNA: In a sense, your role at the DOJ was a sop to business because you once worked in-house and can represent the corporate view. Do you think you were effective in that role?

Chen:I dont see myself as representing the business view. I see myself as representing the business reality. So I think I was quite effective in working with the prosecutors to bring that reality to the discussion. Again, I cannot say better things about the prosecutorstheyre smart people with common sense. What most of them dont have is that experience of working in-house. And Im able to bring that reality to the table, and they very much get it and they appreciate it.

One of the results of that, for example, is that companies used to bring in binders full of their policies. Pretty early on at DOJ, I started asking the prosecutors to tell companies not to bring their policies to compliance presentations. I said to them, I really dont care what the policy says because I challenge them to show me a single employee who sat there and read them. I can tell you right now that nobody in the company reads the policies except for the people who drafted them. Im more interested in how the policies actually operate.

And the reaction from the prosecutors was, this was what we always thought but we just didnt feel like we had the credibility to say it because we havent been in the companies. Now, I think they routinely tell companies not to bring their policies in.

BBNA: So youve left a legacy?

Chen:I think so. TheEvaluation of Corporate Compliance Programsdocument I authored really reflected a lot of that view. The work that Ive been doing with monitors, and really, the most important thing is, the monitors got it, the prosecutors got it. We want to see evidence, we want to see data, of effectiveness.

BBNA: Under the new administration, how do you think the DOJ will operate? Were you already seeing changes when you were there?

Chen:Thats not an easy question to answer, only because I think people dont really appreciate how a large agency

works. Changes can come in very subtle ways; changes can happen very slowly. I know there are people out there who count the number of resolutions and say, oh my gosh, this is the first year under the Trump administration and the numbers either went up or went down, whatever it is.

White-collar cases take a long time. The cases that are being resolved now are cases that started years ago. You want to see the Trump administrations impact, you should look four years from now, not now. What I would watch is how theyre allocating resources. When Trump came in, he put a freeze on hiring but various agencies and their components got exemptions. I was a former Justice Department prosecutor when the administration transitioned from Bush I to Clinton. My impression is that the Criminal Division traditionally got an exemption, and its usually not impacted by political transitions.

Now, the Fraud Section, to my knowledge, hasnt got an exemption for hiring. And a number of people have departed. Ive been going to one departure party after another, including my own. So how are they replacing these people, and what happens when you go from, lets say, 40 prosecutors to 10?

BBNA: After your experience at the DOJ, what tips can you offer compliance officers who are interacting with the department?

Chen:Use common sense.

Make sure your program produces actual results that are measured thoughtfully.

Do assume the prosecutors are smart people with common sense who can see through charades. Prosecutors can detect the difference between a program thats designed to satisfy them versus a program thats designed to work.

BBNA: How do you think the Fraud Section will evaluate corporate compliance under the Trump administration?

Chen:I dont not see the Fraud Section changing one bit. All the current leadership are people who have been there for the past several years and so long as they stay in placeand as far as I know, none of them is planning to go anywherethe current acting chief and the acting deputy chief, and all the unit chiefs, theyre dedicated, committed, smart people, and I dont see their approach changing one bit.

Now, going forward, would they have to engage in more battles with their upper management? Thats to be seen. Again, once you get above the Fraud Section, youre dealing with political appointees, and who they are and what their priorities are will change things.

We all understand, anybodys whos worked in large organizations, if you have upper management that is generally supportive of what you do, then it makes your job so much easier. You know somebodys got your back and you go do what you believe is the right thing to do. If you have an upper management that is constantly challenging you, then youre going to have to pick your battles because you cant battle with them 100 percent of the time.

That does impact how effective you are and how far you can go. Right now, they still dont have a Criminal Division chief, and the acting chief is a career narcotics prosecutor, I believe. I do not know if hes ever handled a white-collar case. That will impact things; its a different set of assumptions that you have to carry into your meetings.

Music and human evolution – OUPblog (blog)

After being closed to the public for the past six months, the Natural History Museums Hintze Hall reopened on the 13 July 2017, featuring a grandblue whale skeleton as its central display. This event carried particular importance for OUPs Gabriel Jackson, who was commissioned to write a piece for the Gala opening ceremony.

The piece, This Paradise I give thee,is a short composition for 13 instruments and baritone solo which draws inspiration from the diversity of the natural world alongside the words of Charles Darwin and John Milton. With this piece Gabriel maps processes and theories of evolution onto music. The idea that evolution can be expressed through music poses some interesting questions; what happens when you consider this relationship from an alternative angle? How has music evolved with humans over time? In his chapter Music and Biocultural EvolutionIan Cross, Professor of Music and Science at the University of Cambridge, provides some interesting ideas.

Although most modern scholarship on music only stretches back to the 1100s or so, music is truly ancient. The earliest example of sophisticated musical instruments (in the form of pipes made of bone and horns) date to around 40,000 years ago. Whilst this may not sound that far back, this predates all examples of visual art.

These early instruments were found in Germany; however, much like today, musical production was not only centred in this part of the world. In fact, there is evidence of music having existed globally at this time, with music production being found in places as far-flung as the pre-Hispanic Americas and the Aboriginal people of precolonial Australia.

It is generallyassumed that the creation of these very early physical instruments occurred significantly after the human capacity for musicality developed. As such, it is likely that other methods of music making that do not involve sound production from instruments, such as singing, date much, much further back than 40,000 years. According to Cross, this assertion provides good grounds for believing that music may have accompanied humans from the earliest signs of modern activity.

Of course, in order for these theories of music as a product of evolution to withstand scrutiny, Cross and other scientists have to rely upon a much more malleable notion of music than that which we often use today. According to the Oxford Dictionariesmusic is, Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. This definition is unlikely to fit with notions of pre-modern music, and, indeed, does not fit all music that is produced today. Some people, for example, may find it quite difficult to perceive a sense of form or harmony in a work such as this:

The notion that all music fits within the definition posed in the Oxford English Dictionarycould therefore be considered a little Western-classical centric; however, the fact that all music expresses emotion is an inescapable truth. Whilst the emotions felt are often specific to an individual, it is unlikely that one would listen to a piece and feel nothing at all.

In addition to expressing emotion, there are also a number of other persistent similarities to be found when establishing the traits of music across cultures. For example, music nearly always carries some form of complex sound event (such as structured rhythms, or pitch organisation) over an underlying regular pulse. This is true regardless of the genre of music that is being listened to. When considering the importance of time in a musical performance, and the transition of emotions, then, some suggestions begin to emerge regarding the reasons why music may have evolved with us.

Cross outlines that, through allowing people to create something together via a regular pulse or beat, musical sounds may have provided a means through which people could envisage that they were sharing each others experiences, thus fostering social bonds.

Similarly, musics capacity to transmit emotions that are felt by everyone, yet specific to an individual, may suggest that it was created as a way of understanding individual and group feelings, particularly in times of social uncertainty. Indeed, as Cross states, the ability to share emotions and intentionality is fundamental to our capacity for culture, the possession of which is assumed be a generic feature of modern humans.

Musics ability to create and maintain social relationships, alongside its direction and motivation of human attention, is likely to have been incredibly important to the survival of pre-modern humans. When taken outside of its more modern context of entertainment, it is indeed likely that music provided an imperative social tool throughout the history of human evolution, and represents just one of the many ways in which humans are different from other species.

What the evolution of employee benefits tells us about the future of healthcare – The Hill (blog)

The debate around the Affordable Care Act (ACA) continues, but regardless of the outcome, a shift is already underway the latest in a long history of shifts regarding who is responsible for healthcare.

Although government and employers have assumed more responsibility in recent years, the foundation for insurance has multiple lineages. We are now entering an era in which employers and government still provide the infrastructure, but employees must carry more of the decision-making and financial responsibility, setting into effect a bold new chapter of proliferating benefits, a cost-sharing model for healthcare and a new employer-employee contract. Both parties need to take a deeper look at their role as we enter into a period of turbulent change.

To understand how we got here, lets first look back at history. The earliest instance of insurance actually traces back to the Roman Empire when military leaders set aside money to pay for proper burial of warriors killed in battle key to attracting loyal fighters.

In the first example of insurance in the New World, neighbors set aside money to help insure their homes against fire in Charleston, South Carolina. While similar examples pop up throughout history, it wasnt until 1929 at the Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, Texas that the concept of employers providing for employees really caught hold. Baylors teachers could not afford to go to the hospital when they were sick, so the university came up with the Baylor Plan, which charged teachers 50 cents a month for up to 21 days of care, should they need it.

Then World War II began, and the government put price controls on everything, including labor. While factory owners couldnt pay workers more than the amount set by the War Labor Board, they still needed some way to attract employees, so they petitioned the board for permission to offer fringe benefits. Employers took on the cost of these benefits, and when the war ended, the idea remained and grew, inadvertently creating a social contract, which set the precedent for paternalistic employer-sponsored healthcare.

The government has since created various laws to strengthen employee protections, including ERISA (1974), which is considered the grandfather of modern welfare benefits, COBRA (1986) to protect those recently unemployed, health savings accounts (HSAs, 2003) to help individuals cover out-of-pocket healthcare costs and the ACA (2010), arguably the most controversial of all. These safeguards were not meant to turn healthcare responsibility over to the government. Instead, they were meant to put rules and requirements on employers to live up to what they were already providing, none more so than the ACA. So where does this leave us today?

Employer-sponsored healthcare isnt going away, but it is about to go through another cycle of perhaps violent change, and very few people understand how disruptive it may be. Were entering an era in which insurance has evolved from an employer benefit with virtually no decision-making or financial involvement from employees, to a cost-sharing model where employees have a real stake in the outcome. As the employer-provided health insurance model quickly evolves, it gives rise to a host of new benefits and programs designed to complement and supplement the primary health coverage.

This transition is not going to be easy, as employees have been sheltered from these costs and decisions for so long. As these expenses have become unsustainable for the employer alone, employees who now foot more of the bill are demanding control. Their mentality is, If Im going to pay for this, Im going to choose what meets my current needs.

In this new era, employees will consider their unique situation and look across the entire benefits package to choose what works best for them. Some may value paying down student loans more than health insurance, while others prioritize pet insurance.

One problem that will emerge is that healthcare is different than other consumer products, and applying our consumer-behavior to healthcare can create some problems. For example, when presented with a list of premiums, people tend to buy down, which is consistent with other forms of purchasing. This holds true until they need care, at which time they often buy the most expensive service because they associate the cost with quality. This counterintuitive way of thinking in which the cheapest doctor is seen as the worst doctor drives up healthcare costs and steers employees toward more expensive care.

Without a massive shift in the way we approach healthcare decisions and a true understanding of how these decisions impact our health and financial well-being, this situation will only get worse.

(I cant help but hear Uncle Bens warning to Spider-Man, with great power comes great responsibility.)

For the cost-sharing model to work, both parties need to understand their new roles, and they need to think about the long-term consequences of their decisions. Employers should provide the options their workers demand, but of equal importance are the tools and education to help them succeed with their newfound responsibilities. Using data to help make these increasingly complex decisions will be vital. Employees will expect more personalized benefit options, and they will only be loyal to employers who offer a broad and flexible package from which to choose. Regardless of how the ACA shakes out, the next chapter of the employee-employer contract is well underway, and its up to both employers and employees to make it work.

Wisconsin company to offer staff microchip implants: ‘The next evolution in payment systems’ – Washington Times

Roughly 50 employees at Wisconsin-based Three Square Market (32M) will soon have microchips embedded between their thumb and forefinger.

Opening doors, logging in to computers, and paying for food in the 32M break room will now be handled by encrypted technology the size of a grain or rice. CEO Todd Westby says all of his River Falls staff will have the opportunity to have devices implanted under their skin starting Aug. 1.

Its the next thing thats inevitably going to happen, and we want to be a part of it, Mr. Westby told a local ABC affiliate on Monday.

The company claims that it is the first in the nation to offer its staff such a deal, which is valued at $300.

Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc., the company said in a press release, Fox News reported. We see chip technology as the next evolution in payment systems, much like micro markets have steadily replaced vending machines.

Mr. Westby ABC-5 Wisconsin that not GPS monitoring capability will be included in the chips, which use RFID technology (Radio-Frequency Identification).

Employees are not required to receive implants and may opt out at any time.

Why Aristotle and Aquinas? – Discovery Institute

Heres a fair question: Why do I prattle on so much about scholastic philosophy? Of what genuine relevance is it to intelligent design, and how is it of help in our twilight struggle with Darwinism and materialism?

My quick answer (and quite honest) is that I love it. The metaphysical perspective of the great scholastic philosophers hylomorphismis the best idea anyone ever had. At least, the best secular idea anyone ever had. There is a deep beauty and encompassing rationality to the Aristotelian-Thomist way of understanding the world. It can be said that Aristotle was the last man to know everything that could be known in his time, and that Aquinas was the last great systematic philosopherthe last philosopher/theologian to put together a coherent system for understanding all of reality. It is a way of understanding the world that is at once true and beautiful (and St. Thomas would say that truth and beauty are really the same thing). And I think that he pretty much got it right.

How does this help in the struggle between design and Darwinian materialism? Do beauty and truth really play a role in this fight in the trenches of 21stcentury science and culture? I think they do, in a practical way.

The fundamental modernist error is Nominalism. Nominalism, which is a philosophical school that had a foreshadowing in antiquity but fruition in the 14thcentury, is the belief that universals dont exist independently of the mind. It is the view that such general things as justice or humanity or mathematics are merely concepts, with no real instantiation in the extra-mental world. Nominalism is the view that universals are just names, without instantiated reality. It is a view in contrast to the radical realism of Plato, who believed that universals existed in perfect Forms in a realm more real than our own, and to the moderate realism of Aristotle, who believed (in characteristically moderate fashion) that universals had an extra-mental reality in this world, but not in the Platonic world of Forms.

The problem with Nominalism is that it detached and eventually isolated the mind from the world, and evolved over time into the Cartesian dualist model of the mind that man was a composite of two separate substances, mental and physical. Modern materialists simply discarded Descartes mental substance, and built their metaphysical structure (tottering as it is) on matter merely a substance extended in space. It is through matter, and matter alone, that materialists try to explain the world. And of course stuff extended in space left no necessary room for God, which pleased newly emboldened atheists no end.

Materialism, the witless spawn of Nominalism and Cartesian dualism, provided passable grounding for some aspects of modern science, especially after Bacon discarded teleology as a principle of nature and Newton developed a rather successful cosmology based on the analogy of nature to a machine. Mechanical philosophy, the ideological substrate of materialism, became the default metaphysical stance of modern science.

But an explanation for life seemed beyond the reach of even most passionate materialist. Stuff extended in space seemed (to the unreflective atheist) adequate to investigate rocks and such, but living things manifest a breath-taking complexity and purpose that no one in their right mind could attributed to just extended stuff. Richard Dawkins got it right: materialism left an atheist intellectually unfulfilled.

Fulfillment came in 1859. Darwins survivors survived theory put life into the machine of nature, and seemed (if you dont really think about it) to explain the uncanny adaptation of living things to the natural world. If they didnt adapt, theyd die! thats how it all happened! The non-adaptive ones are dead, the adaptive ones are alive! Biology is explained! Atheisms shiny new creation myth put out pseudopods into science and culture, degrading both in ways painful to examine. Fairy tales became scientific explanations, and they werent even nice fairy tales. In the Darwinian myth, mans highest attributes evolved due to his lowest dispositions. Eugenics was and is the inevitable outcome of Darwins sanguinary anthropology.

If we are to defeat this madness, for the sake of science and culture and humanity, we must do more than grind Darwinism to dust, as necessary (and satisfying) as that is.

We must replace it. And the replacement must be something true and moral. Hylemorphism, the metaphysics of Aristotle and Aquinas, is the metaphysical system that Nominalism and Mechanical Philosophy and materialism and Darwinism replaced, yetit remains the one metaphysical system utterly opposed to the idiot and ugly errors of Darwins fairy tale.

My hope is that the ID movement can move toward an Aristotelian and Thomist critique of Darwinism. It is the most effective way I think the only really effective way to kick out the foundation of Nominalism and Mechanical Philosophy on which Darwin and his children built their fiction.

Afghan Girls Overcome Stupid Politicians, Religious Lunatics To Compete In Robotics Competition – CleanTechnica

July 24th, 2017 by Steve Hanley

One of the stated reasons for the US decision to engage the Taliban in Afghanistan 16 years ago was to make it possible for women to participate in Afghan society. First Lady Laura Bush made empowerment of Afghan women one of her highest goals.

This book is featured on the Bush Institute website and features an foreword by Laura Bush.

Today, the George W. Bush Institute carries the following statement on its Afghan Womens Project home page: For Afghanistan to become a fully inclusive society, womens rights must be protected and expanded. A cornerstone of US policy toward Afghanistan is the Promote policy, which states,Everyone who cares about the future of Afghanistan supports womens empowerment as the foundation for economic growth, peace and security.

Despite all that lofty rhetoric, when a team of young Afghan women applied for visas to attend an international robotics competition in Washington, DC, the US State Department, reflecting what it assumed were the wishes of the Muslim-hating president, summarily denied their request.

The young girls were crushed. We thought the U.S. and Afghanistan had friendly relations. We thought the U.S.s fight for womens rights and equality would get us visas, said Rodaba Noori, age 15, according to The Guardian.

They were stunned when they learned that visas had been approved for a team from Iran one of the 6 Muslim countries targeted by Trumps unconscionable travel ban. Why is it only Afghans who cant go? Its discrimination. It really makes me angry, said Lida Azizi, age 16.

Alireza Mehraban, the teams mentor, recounts the special hardships the young women encountered in order to compete at all. Most had to travel through Taliban-controlled sections of the country to complete their visa applications in Kabul. Taliban men are so weak and insecure, they cannot control their sexual urges if they see a womans face, hands, ankles, or other body parts. Therefore, they insist women be fully covered whenever they are outside the home.

Like many Muslim countries, women in parts of Afghanistan are forbidden to appear in public without an escort from a male relative, lest they misbehave and provoke any other male. Religious thought police patrol regularly and delight in administering public whippings to any woman who dares contravene sharia law.

The robotics competition involves designing robots that can separate blue and orange balls. Afghan officials were so befuddled about why the equipment needed to compete in the contest would be sent to females that the kits were detained for 3 months after they arrived in Kabul. As a result, the girls had only 2 weeks to complete their robots other contestants had 4 months.

When the plight of the girls caught the attention of the news media, the #FakePresident, whose malevolent policies created the mess in the first place, magnanimously stepping in and ordered the State Department to grant visas to the girls after all, cutting the legs out from under his own people who thought they were dutifully carrying out his hateful policies.

They were met at Dulled International Airport byHamdullah Mohib, Afghanistans ambassador to the US, who called it the proudest moment of my career. He described the girls as symbols of a new Afghanistan emerging from the shadow of Americas longest war.

These girls are 16 years old. The youngest is 14. She was born after the US engagement in Afghanistan, and the others around the time when the US started to engage with the country. 16 years ago we didnt have schools for girls. And today there are, Mohib said.

What does it mean? These girls are actually representative of what progress has been made. They have gone through that process every year, through education. They started with their primary school and went up and today are competing in an international competition with the robots that they built.

At 14, Somayah Faruqi, is the youngest member of the Afghan robotics team. She says her favorite memory from the contest was working with teams from other countries and observing the different techniques her competitors used to assemble their robots. I learned a lot from them, she says. It was a very unique experience. Too bad so many Americans are petrified to learn from others.

At the end of the competition against teams from 158 other nations, the Afghan women didnt win, but they were awarded a special silver medal by the organizers to commemorate their courageous achievement and can do attitude. The members of the team say they plan to continue studying science and technology, and hope to return to the competition as mentors for a future team of young Afghans.

Americans were once known for just such a can do attitude, but now they sit at home, quaking in fear with the covers over their heads. The thought of what harm foreigners who are allowed into the country might do terrifies them. A country built by immigrants doesnt want the creative, exploratory blood of modern-day immigrants to change the stew in the pot.

The US is not the only country with smart people. By vilifying those who look different, dress differently, and worship differently, those smart people from other lands will find other nations where their genius is encouraged and allowed to flourish. And the US will be poorer because of its self-inflicted policies that enshrine the ravings of a madman into law.

Watching this inspiring video from the Bush Institute makes it plain just how far America has fallen as it runs away from its traditional role as an international leader. There is much America could learn from these young women, if we would only allow ourselves to listen.

ONC BOCES receives grant for robotics program – Oneonta Daily Star

The Corning Incorporated Foundation has awarded agrant of $15,000 to Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES, according to a media release.

The money is to go toward an expected Fall 2018 launch of a Mechatronics/Robotics program. The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level manufacturing jobs and to go on to college for advanced training.

Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots. Mechatronics is a technology that combines electronics and mechanical engineering. Mechatronics/Robotics at ONC BOCES will be an interdisciplinary program focused on mechanics, electronics, motor control systems, and automation, which drive the design, operation and maintenance of all modern complex machinery, the release said.

Several area manufacturing firms and food-production facilities rely on mechatronics, but sometimes struggle to fill positions, according to the release. The new program is intended to help plug the middle skills gap, the release said.

Mechatronics/Robotics will provide students with the necessary information and skills sets to enter the emerging field of advanced manufacturing, ONC BOCES Superintendent Nicholas Savin said in the release. SUNY Delhi has recognized the employment need for this emerging field and has developed 2- and 4-year programs to prepare students for this work. Problem solving, mechanical and electrical design, automation and computer systems/logic represent areas of study. Broome Community College has also recognized the need in this emerging field and has begun to develop a degree program as well to help meet the skilled employment needs for this industry.

The Mechatronics/Robotics program offered at the high school level at ONC BOCES will allow for students to achieve a level of experience that will enable them to enter the workforce after graduation or position them to excel in a related course of study at a higher educational institution, the release said.

The grant was written by the Capital Region BOCES Grants Service.
