Virtual reality arcade opens in Greensboro – Greensboro News & Record

GREENSBORO In one room, Deejay Jones fought zombies in the Arizona desert. Next door, Courtney Davis fixed smoothies and teas for impatient customers. Across the hall, Davis Kelton surveyed the view from a seaside boardwalk arcade.

Of course, there were no zombies, customers or boardwalks. But strapped into virtual-reality headsets at Shift VR Arcade, Jones, Davis and Kelton were happy to believe their eyes.

It definitely looks real. It looks like Im on a pier, Kelton said, his eyes hidden behind the black headset as he turned slowly in the middle of a carpeted room the size of a walk-in closet. Over heres a carnival game with some unicorns. The waters cool.

The arcade, which opened July 1 at 1633 Spring Garden St., has four rooms outfitted with HTC Vive virtual-reality headsets, with room to expand to six. Players can reserve booths for $50 per hour to play a selection of around 70 games, ranging from scary (Emily Wants To Play) to silly (Fruit Ninja VR), and everything in between.

A lot of customers are seasoned gamers, according to Cruz Cockman, who co-owns the arcade with Chet Lakhani. But others are video-game newbies who are just curious about the technology, he said.

A lot of people are open to the idea of virtual reality, and they just have to come in and try it out, he said. Weve had a lot of parents come in, either on date night or looking for something to do with their kids. And we have the games to accommodate all of them.

Cockman and Lakhani met while operating businesses across the street from each other (Little Akihabara Anime Shop and Glass City Smoke Shop, respectively). The idea for Shift VR Arcade came after Cockman installed an HTC Vive in his store and saw the technologys wide appeal.

Everyone who came in and tried it had such an amazing response to it, he said. Young people, old people, male, female, everyone had something there for them. We wanted to do that on a larger scale.

The duo decided to take the plunge in May, and got the business up and running within 45 days, doing much of the work by themselves or with the help of friends. For now, the arcade is just for recreational play, though Cockman and Lakhani hope to form leagues and host tournaments for more competitive gamers. Eventually, they also hope to expand to other cities.

This is really the future of gaming, Lakhani said. There arent many businesses like this, but we know the competition will come, so we really want to set the industry standard. We want to be peoples no. 1 option.

Business has increased steadily since opening, thanks largely to word of mouth and social media promotions. Jones, a Kernersville resident, said he spotted a coupon for the arcade on Groupon and thought it would be a fun activity for a date night with Davis.

I was a gamer when I was younger, Jones said. But Ive got kids now so I cant really get my hands on a controller. Because they hog it.

Davis doesnt care for video games, but was intrigued by the concept of virtual reality. She asked Cockman to select games that would be good for a beginner, and spent most of her hour playing Job Simulator, set in a future run by robots who reenact human jobs as a hobby.

I was in the kitchen, burning bacon and breaking wine bottles, she said. It was really fun.

Jones began his session in the jungle, swinging on vines from tree to tree. That didnt go so well.

I felt sick and had to stop. I dont know how monkeys do it, he said. I had to switch games.

The couple said theyd be happy to spend another date night at the arcade on one condition.

I wont be swinging from trees next time, Jones said. But well be back.

Evidence of Apple Inc. Virtual Reality Headset Emerges — The … – Motley Fool

I regularly peruse Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) job boards to try to get a glimpse into what the future of Apple and its products holds.

Apple's job listings will generally go to some lengths to obscure the specifics of what product categories that the candidates who apply for those positions will be working on, but with a little bit of industry knowledge and some educated guesses, it isn't impossible to get a reasonable sense of what Apple is working on.

In perusing the company's job listings, I came across a listing that seems to suggest that Apple is working on a virtual reality (VR) headset.

On July 27, Apple posted a listing for a "Visual Experience Engineer."

Apple says in the listing that its "display 'Visual Experience' team is looking for an enthusiastic engineer to lead the development of novel display technologies."

This line alone doesn't suggest that Apple is working on a VR headset -- Apple's core products all have displays and it's only natural that the company would want to work on future technologies to make the displays on future iterations of those core products better.

Read further, though, and the hints start to come.

The next line in the listing says that the job "involves hardware experience prototyping and software-hardware integration with the eventual goal of bringing new technologies to the mass consumer market."

While this, too, could refer to new display technologies being tested out for existing product categories, it's starting to sound more like Apple is describing a new product category rather than an enhancement of an existing one.

Then, under the "Key Qualifications" section, the floodgates appear to open with respect to clues.

Apple wants an engineer that has "experience with depth sensing or eye tracking," has "prior hands-on experience of prototyping novel hardware setups," has experience "designing and conducting human perceptual related experiments," and even experience "in human psychophysics and experimental design."

In case you don't know what "psychophysics" is -- and don't feel bad if you don't, I had to look it up, as well -- Dictionary.com defines itas "the branch of psychology that deals with the relationships between physical stimuli and resulting sensations and mental states."

I really don't think whoever gets this gig will be working on a next-generation iPhone, iPad, or Mac display; she or he will almost certainly be working on a virtual reality headset or something similarly immersive (perhaps a dedicated augmented reality headset).

Many technology companies that build and maintain highly successful franchises as Apple has with the iPhone struggle to move on to the "next big thing."

Although Apple's long-term future is far from certain (no company's is), Apple management seems to be investing seriously in making sure that it will be among those that will build the future of technology (which Apple has been doing for many years) rather than among those that will be left behind.

Using worm blood as an alternative to human blood could change medicine forever – Bel Marra Health

Home General Health Using worm blood as an alternative to human blood could change medicine forever

Worms are not normally thought of as the most useful creatures on the planetwe mostly just use them as bait. The lugworm (Arenicola marina) is slimy, deep pink, and not fit for human consumptionit hasnt really provided much in terms of usefulness for humans. That is until now.

French researchers have discovered that the lugworm has an extraordinary ability that could transform medicine as we know it. The blood of the lugworm has the ability to load up with oxygenthe molecule needed for every tissue in the body.

Worm blood could prove to be a viable blood substitute. It could potentially save countless lives, speed up recovery times post-surgery, and even help organ transplant patients.

The hemoglobin of the lugworm can transport 40 times more oxygen from the lungs to tissues than human hemoglobin.

It also has the advantage of being compatible with all blood types, says Gregory Raymond, a biologist at Aquastream, a fish-farming facility on the Brittany coastline.

The lugworm garnered medical interest in as early as 2003, but it had never been studied. The researchers began their own study without having any parameters regarding how to proceed. Instead, they had to learn as they went. Lugworms have the ability to survive in extreme conditions. When exposed to conditions that have very little oxygen. their hemoglobin stocks up on an astonishing amount of oxygen, allowing it to survive more than eight hours out of the water.

The main hindrance to using the blood of the lugworm as an alternative to human blood is the possibility of it causing an allergic reaction and potentially causing kidney damage. One of its main advantages, however, is that lugworm hemoglobin is almost the same as human hemoglobin and doesnt need to be contained within red blood cells. This making differing blood types inconsequential.

Initial studies led the researchers to extract and purify lugworm hemoglobin, testing how well the substance works in mouse models. The rodents were found to adapt well, with no signs of immune response seen in other animal studies.

As of 2015, clinical trials began, with the blood being used in 10 human kidney transplant patients. An additional 60 participants are currently enrolled in the study across France. While there is some time left before the researchers get definitive answers on safety and effectiveness of the lugworm blood, the initial signs look promising.

The properties of extracellular hemoglobin extracted from the lugworm could help protect skin grafts, promote bone regeneration and lead to universal blood, says Raymond.

Former local resident sentenced for distributing drugs – Fremont Tribune

PLATTSMOUTH A former Nehawka resident learned Monday morning that she would serve five years on probation for distributing marijuana in Cass County.

Shonnelle K. Poppleton, 44, appeared in Cass County District Court for sentencing on a Class IIA felony charge of distribution of a controlled substance-marijuana. Poppleton, who now lives in Bellevue, accepted a plea deal with prosecutors in May. The state agreed to dismiss a second drug charge in exchange for the guilty plea.

Cass County Sheriffs Office investigators learned last year that Poppleton had been attempting to sell marijuana to local residents. A confidential informant arranged to meet Poppleton at her former Cass County residence in October. She sold 1.06 grams of marijuana to the confidential informant during the meeting.

Deputy County Attorney Richard Fedde told the court he felt a term of one year in state prison was appropriate. He said Poppleton had told probation officials during a pre-sentence investigation meeting that she would likely continue to use marijuana if she was placed on probation.

Poppleton told the court she had been taking marijuana for medical reasons. She said she would find an alternative medicine that would help address her health issues. She also said she was willing to abide by all other terms of probation.

Judge Michael Smith told Poppleton he had prepared paperwork for either a probation sentence or prison term. He said her statements had convinced him to order probation instead of incarceration.

Smith said he would place Poppleton on 60 months of probation to give her time to work on rehabilitation and treatment. Poppleton will be required to complete a chemical dependency evaluation, psychiatric exam and psychology evaluation within 60 days. She will also be required to abstain from all drugs and alcohol and submit to random drug tests during the five-year probation period.

Food supplements and tea subject of EFSA warning on pyrrolizidine alkaloid consumption – NutraIngredients.com

By Will ChuWill Chu , 31-Jul-20172017-07-31T00:00:00Z Last updated on 31-Jul-2017 at 12:37 GMT2017-07-31T12:37:05Z

High consumption of tea infusions is a possible long-term concern for human health due to their carcinogenic properties, the European Food and Safety Authority rules.

The consumption of food supplements based on pyrrolizidine alkaloid-producing plants could also result in exposure levels causing short-term toxicity resulting in adverse health effects, stated theEuropean Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The agency points primarily to the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) content in tea, but also notes that it appears in honey and some dietary food supplements.

Updates to its risk assessment, which now take into account more recent data on exposure levels of these toxins establish a new Reference Point (RP) of 237micrograms per kilogram per body weight per day (g/kg bw/day).

This latest decision falls in line with other findings outlined in 2011, in which EFSA ruled there was a possible health concern for some high consumers of honey such as toddlers and children.

The panel at the time also concluded that 1,2-unsaturated PAs may act as genotoxic carcinogens in humans. An RP of 70 g/kg bw/per day was thus calculated.

In increasing the RP, the report stated that the changemaintains the conservative nature of the previous risk assessment.

This considers the general degree of uncertainty related to the available studies used for the dose response analysis and the fact that both riddelliine and lasiocarpine are classified among the most potent PAs.

Along with riddelliine and lasiocarpine, another PA, monocrotaline was also classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2008.

The EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM) agreed, identifying a list of 17 PAs in total that required continued observation. These include lasiocarpine, lasiocarpine-N-oxide and senkirkine.

Following a Commission request, EFSAs scientific report, published in August 2016, detailed dietary exposure to PAs through the consumption of honey, tea, and food supplements.

Here, they found the highest average concentrations of PAs consumed were found in the samples of rooibos (lower bound (LB)=4.1g/L) and peppermint (LB=3.5g g/L).

Concentrations of PAs in black tea were twice as high as reported for green tea (LB=1.6g/L and LB=0.8g/L, respectively).

Certain food supplements contained very high levels of PAs. Average PA concentrations of 235253g/kg (LB upper bound (UB)) were reported for pollen-based supplements. Retail honey contained PA concentrations of 14.527.5 g/kg.

Using the RP of 237 g/kg bw per day for the sum of all 1,2-unsaturated PAs, exposure levels were calculated for dietary exposure.

Acute exposure that also accounted for high contamination levels in all food commodities ranged from 1 to 300ng/kg bw per day and from 6 to 170ng/kg bw per day for mean consumers in the younger age classes (infantsadolescents) and adults, respectively.

Acute or short-term exposure to PAs related to the consumption of food supplements varied considerably depending on the type of supplement.

Consumption of PA producing plant extracts to be consumed following infusion led to exposure levels as high as 890ng/kg bw per day.

Ingestion of one tablet/capsule based on PA-producing plants corresponded to estimates of acute/short-term exposure levels of about 800 or 1,800g/kg bw per day.

Acute/short-term exposure through the consumption of pollen-based supplements showed much lower exposure estimates in the range of 344ng/kg bw per day.

In view of the margin of more than three orders of magnitude between these exposure levels and the lowest known dose range associated with human acute/short-term adverse effects, the CONTAM Panel concluded that there is a low risk related to acute dietary exposure to PAs through the consumption of teas, herbal infusions and honey, the report concluded.

Consumption of pollen-based supplements is not considered to pose acute risks to human health, the Panel added.

Are you looking for the magic pill for weight loss, increased energy or anything else that ails you? You arent alone. While the draw of dietary supplements is strong and the claims compelling dont be fooled these products are not the same as food. For example, a recent study identified green tea extract as a potentially dangerous ingredient. While sipping on green tea can benefit health, the supplemental form commonly found in weight loss and bodybuilding supplements has been linked to many cases of liver damage. Here are 4 other supplements that are much more dangerous than their food-based counterparts.

Why Supplements Can Be So Dangerous

Unlike foods and medications, the dietary supplement industry has very little FDA oversight. For this reason, many products sold on store shelves and online are manufactured without proper safety testing. These dangers may be the culprit for a dramatic uptick in liver disease over the last decade. Health conscious consumers are rightfully confused. When a nutrient gets attention for its health benefits, its logical to look for more from a supplement, but this can do more harm than good. While there is a time and place for supplements when a true deficiency has been detected, some of the most popular nutrients out there can treat your body very differently when taken in supplement form. The good news is, however, its spectacularly hard to eat your way into toxicity if you stick to the whole food sources.

Red Yeast Rice

Touted for its cholesterol lowering properties, this supplement has made the Consumer Reports list of 15 Supplement Ingredients to Always Avoid. Not only can it negatively affect the action of cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs, it may also affect proper function of the muscles, kidneys and liver.

Iron

Your body relies heavily on iron for healthy blood. According to the National Institutes of Health, populations at risk for deficiency include infants, children, teen girls and both pregnant and pre-menopausal women. Eating iron rich foods like dried fruits, fortified cereals, dark-meat poultry and red meat can help you meet those daily needs, while supplements can be toxic to the liver. For this reason, if you choose to take a supplement monitor blood levels regularly and work with your doctor and registered dietitian to establish a proper supplement dosage.

Vitamin A

This essential nutrient is found in red and orange fruits and veggies as well as milk, cheese and meat. The animal based sources are known as retinol and high doses from supplements can cause skin changes, liver problems and birth defects in pregnant women.

Vitamin B6

Lots of folks reach for B vitamins like B6 to help boost energy and brain function, but the truth is only calories from food will truly give you energy and nutrients the body needs. Large doses of B6 can lead to nerve damage when taken for long periods of time. Since this nutrient may appear in many different supplements, its vitally important to take inventory of all the supplements you are taking. Vitamin B6 can be found in a wide variety of foods including chickpeas, chicken, potatoes, cottage cheese, nuts, raisins, tofu, rice and watermelon.

Vitamins and supplements: Why bother telling your doctor? – MyDaytonDailyNews

To take better care of yourself, you eat healthy foods, exercise, and see your doctor regularly. You also may take vitamins or supplements to boost your immune system or get essential nutrients. But how can you know what kinds of vitamins or supplements to avoid and what is actually good for you?

Not all doctors agree about the benefits of vitamins and supplements, but theres one thing they can all agree on: If you are taking any kind of vitamin or supplement, you need to tell your primary care doctor as well as any other doctors involved in your care.

More than half of all American adults take some kind of vitamin, but most dont think they need to tell their doctor. All vitamins, minerals, supplements and detox regimens are medically important.

Unfortunately, just like with prescription medications, the wrong combinations of vitamins can mean more harm than help: Some pre-existing health conditions dont mix well with certain supplements, and some vitamins can counteract or react with prescription medications such as birth control, blood thinners, heart medication and even antibiotics, says Kali Hollingsworth, DO, a family and sports medicine physician with Kettering Physician Networks Primary Care Greystone in Sugarcreek Twp. Taking the wrong doses of vitamins, combining vitamins, or mixing supplements and alcohol could have negative effects on your health.

Common supplements that can interact with medications include St. Johns wart, feverfew, vitamin E, garlic, Co Q10, fish oil, and vitamin D.

Millions of Americans are also taking probiotics for digestive health. Theres evidence that some probiotics may help prevent diarrhea caused by infections or antibiotics. Some may also ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome or lactose intolerance. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasnt approved any health claims for probiotics.

Its always best to talk with your doctor before you start taking a supplement, especially if you already take medications, have health concerns or are pregnant, advises Dr. Hollingsworth.

People who take more than one medication or supplement are at high risk for a potentially negative interaction, some of which can take weeks to develop.

When possible, foods, not supplements, are the best sources of nutrients. Thats because produce is packed with other naturally occurring substances that are good for you, too.

If youre a caregiver who manages medications for a family member or loved one, be sure to keep a list of every medication your loved one takes. This includes prescription and nonprescription drugs, as well as nutritional supplements and vitamins. Give a copy to each health care provider that your family member or loved one sees.

Be sure to have a doctor or pharmacist review that list at least once a year and look for possible drug interactions.

Kettering Health Network is a faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare system. The network has eight hospitals: Grandview, Kettering, Sycamore, Southview, Greene Memorial, Fort Hamilton, Kettering Behavioral Health and Soin.

Clemson study reveals dangers of DMAA – South Strand news

Contaminated dietary supplements may cause health problems in users and render athletes ineligible to play, according to a Clemson University professor.

Bryan Denham, Campbell professor of sports communication and chair of Clemsons communication department, wrote in a series of journal articles that the problem often lies in the inclusion of methylhexaneamine, or DMAA, an amphetamine derivative banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Denham said supplement users may not realize that manufacturers need not supply evidence of safety and efficacy before marketing their products. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, or the DSHEA, the U.S Food and Drug Administration cannot inspect supplements until after the products have appeared in the marketplace.

Denham's work, featured in the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics, explained that athletes might enjoy an energy boost from DMAA-spiked products, but the presence of DMAA can result in a suspension from a WADA-regulated competition.

While many athletes are aware of the ban on DMAA, Denham said they test positive because some manufacturers continue to spike products with it. DMAA does not appear on ingredient labels, he said, but shows up on drug tests.

As Denham points out in a second article, forthcoming in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, the spread of misinformation is another hurdle for athletes, who often rely on one another for information about supplements. That practice may or may not result in an accurate understanding of the risks involved.

Denham said supplement manufacturers can also sow confusion. He said these manufacturers frequently contend that substances such as DMAA can be found in nature and therefore qualify as legitimate ingredients based on DSHEA guidelines.

In addition to stimulants, dietary supplements have also been found to contain anabolic steroids. In a third article, published in the International Journal of Sport Communication, Denham examines the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2014.

In the U.S., anabolic steroids are classified as Schedule III Controlled Substances and the 2014 legislation added approximately 25 "designer" steroids to the list.

Denham said designer steroids are substances that have been reverse-engineered to differ slightly from existing drugs. Chemists design these drugs, which frequently turn up in dietary supplements, with an end goal to create performance-enhancing substances that have not been banned by WADA.

In my view, the press has done a very good job of identifying the problems associated with designer steroids, Denham said, but certain policymakers and strong supplement lobbies have made it difficult to act. Any mention of reforming DSHEA is met with shouting about threatened consumer rights.

Denham said that more than half of all adults in the United States use some forms of dietary supplements and the U.S. supplement industry is approaching $40 billion. The problem, he said, is that consumers can only trust that products contain what manufacturers say they contain.

While actual pharmaceuticals are required to contain between 90 and 110 percent of stated ingredient amounts, researchers have identified dietary supplements that contain between zero and 150 percent.

Denham encourages supplement users to examine product labels for indications of third-party batch testing. These tests examine raw materials that will be used in supplements. Companies such as Informed Sport certify products following batch tests, and individuals can then record batch numbers of supplements used. Athletes can also install a phone application, Supplement 411, which lists hazardous supplements identified by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

TransCanada still sees producer support for Keystone XL – WorldOil (subscription)

By Kevin Orland on 7/31/2017

CALGARY (Bloomberg) -- TransCanada Corp. said it still expects commercial support for its controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline, tamping down speculation that it was having trouble finding customers for thelong-delayed line.

Keystone XL, which was rejected by the Obama administration before being revived by President Donald Trump this year, would boost TransCanadas dividend growth, the company said in a statement Friday. Media reports in recent weeks said that the company was having trouble signing up customers for the pipeline, conceived to help move crude from Albertas oil sands to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

TransCanada said earlier this year that it was working to sign new shippers following years of delays. Given the time it took to gain federal approval, TransCanada said it expected some shippers to reduce their volume commitments and that other new customers would be introduced. The company said on Thursday that its soliciting additional commitments to ship oil on Keystone XL.

Weve had good support from our legacy shippers, which gives us a good base to launch this open season, Paul Miller, TransCanadas president of liquids pipelines, said on a conference call.

The open season closes on Sept. 28, with the results of the process expected to be finalized in late November, Miller said. The company should also receive its regulatory decisions from Nebraska around that time and will weigh both of those factors in determining whether to proceed with the line, he said. If TransCanada decides to move ahead on Keystone XL, it would need six to nine months to prepare for construction and about two years to build it, he said.

The shares were up 0.2% at C$63.66 as of 1:44 p.m. in Toronto. Calgary-based TransCanada gained 5% this year through Thursday.

Dividend growth

Success in advancing Keystone XL or other growth initiatives such as the Bruce Power life extension may augment or extend the companys dividend growth outlook, CEO Russ Girling said in the statement. The company plans to increase its annual dividend at the upper end of an 8% to 10% range through 2020.

Keystone won votes of confidence from the chief executive officers of Canadian oil producers Cenovus Energy Inc. and Suncor Energy Inc. this week. The CEOs both said they support Keystone and that the Canadian energy industry needs more pipeline capacity. Suncor confirmed that it plans to ship its products on Keystone.

Albertas oil producers have long warned that a lack of pipeline space was hurting their prospects. That pipeline pinch may start to hit the industry later this year as Suncors massive Fort Hills oil-sands project starts to produce oil and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. completes another phase of expansion at its Horizon mine.

Beyond Keystone

Looking beyond Keystone, TransCanada is spending C$2 billion ($1.6 billion) to expand its natural gas pipeline network in Western Canada. The upgrades to the Nova Gas system will include 171 mi (275 km) of new pipeline, additional compression and new metering stations.

The company said on Friday that it was applying to the National Energy Board to expand capacity on its Canadian Mainline, which carries natural gas from producers in Alberta to markets in the nations east. The company would spend about C$160 million on the project, which is underpinned by 15-year contracts.

TransCanadas second-quarter profit was 76 Canadian cents a share, excluding some items. Theaverage estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg was 68 cents.

Kam Chancellor hopes extension with Seahawks gets done ‘any time now’ – MyNorthwest.com

RENTON A contract extension for Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor is starting to sound more like a matter of when and no longer if. Comments from both sides over the last two days have left that impression.

Following the Seahawks first practice of training camp on Sunday, coach Pete Carroll said the talks have been positive and that he hopes a deal will be finished soon.

Chancellor answered in the affirmative when asked Monday if he shares that optimism.

Yeah, I think its been positive on both ends. Hopefully it gets done any time now, he said. But I feel that its positive on both ends. Both sides have been very productive, working together. So Im just waiting to see whats happening.

Chancellor, 29, is entering the final year of the contract he signed in 2013, which includes a $6.8 million base salary for 2017. Because of where hes at in the life of his contract with one season left as opposed to being more than a year away from free agency hes been considered a candidate for an extension along with tight end Jimmy Graham and center Justin Britt.

Chancellor was asked Monday if theres any temptation to play out his current deal with an eye toward testing free agency next offseason. That could, in theory, have some appeal given how the safety market has escalated in recent seasons.

According to Spotrac.com, eight safeties are making an average of at least $8.5 million, with Kansas Citys Eric Berry topping the list at $13 million per season. Miamis Reshad Jones, the NFLs highest-paid strong safety, makes $12 million per year. Those deals were all signed after Chancellor signed an extension in 2013 that averaged a little over $7 million.

So, any desire to see what kind of offers might be out there after 2017?

Right now, both sides are having positive talks and we are just going to keep doing what we are doing right now and Im just going to follow that process, Chancellor said.

He was asked if he wants to finish his career with the Seahawks.

Exactly. I do. I do, Chancellor said. I love this team. They gave me the first opportunity, the only opportunity, and I would love to retire here.

How realistic will that be?

As realistic as they make it, he said.

Reading the Cards: Michelle Tea’s Tarot Advice for San Francisco – KQED

What's in the cards for San Francisco? Author Michelle Tea gives a reading for the city and discovers some surprising advice. (Photo: Jenn Rosenstein / Illustration: Ingrid Rojas Contreras and Gabe Meline/KQED)

When writer Michelle Tea first came to San Francisco, she had yet to win awards or develop a diehard following. Instead, she supported herself on Haight Street by giving Tarot readings as she describes it, an ancient story system, a pack of cards that tell a multitude of tales depending on the ways in which theyre placed alongside one another. In other words, a writers dream.

Teas new book, Modern Tarot (Harper Collins; $22.99), is a prismatically down-to-earth guide, and Tea is a sagacious tour guide. Hip and discerning, Tea shares personal anecdotes, shares some of her personal rituals to take each cards meaning into her life, and, perhaps my favorite, decodes the symbolism of each card. (Tea describing the snow on which stands the Hermit, a sage old woman supporting herself on a staff: If water is the emotions and air is the intellect, then snow is the emotions made tangible, by the cold air of logic.)

Modern Tarot offers the most straightforward interpretationIve found about how Tarot cards work, and how the mythic journeys each card portrays can be used to harness a personal moment. So naturally, Ive asked Michelle Tea to give the city of San Francisco a reading.

Below, Tea trains her eye on the City and finds, among other things, that the tech bubble is not a bubble that will burst just yet; that the city needs to work on its partying; that it must get in touch with the emotional impact of its existence; and, she says, If San Francisco cant get itself together to honor the feminine, the feminine will just storm the castle.

Youve been warned, San Francisco.

A Tarot reading by Michelle Tea

A reading I like to do, for myself and for others, is a general Celtic Cross. The Celtic Cross spread is a popular one for a reason its simple, its thorough, it provides a good overview of whats happened, whats going on, and whats on the rise. I shuffle the deck and ask in a broad sense what the outcoming and incoming energies are right now, and this afternoon, I asked on behalf of the city of San Francisco.

Hmmmm, I was afraid of this. Right now, San Francisco is all about work. The card Im using the Rider-Waite deck, with art by the wonderful Pamela Coleman Smith depicts an architect getting the thumbs up from a couple of moneybags. Hooray, theyre going to pay him to design their castle! The Bay Area has gotten the thumbs up from moneybags everywhere from the continued development of all things tech. An old story, but whats interesting is, this card is a three were still at the start of this current work cycle. We know this bubble isnt a bubble at all. Its got stability, staying power, and its only going to grow from here. Good news for many, Im sure, but all work and no play makes Jack a dull town.

Verrrrry interesting. This card represents what crosses the present, what influences it, either helping it along or slowing it down. The Queen of Cups is a heavy-duty feminine energy card. It represents the realm of emotions. A Queen, it is a mature card, it thinks before it acts and considers the way a behavior could wound or heal. It is a poet and a dreamer.

This to me looks a lot like the battle between good and evil enacted in San Francisco for decades now the masculine-fueled work drive opposing and being opposed by a feminine-fueled emotion drive. My read on this is that industry in San Francisco will not be able to fully, truly grow until it begins to mature out of its little-kid, I-want-it-all phase and responds to the emotional impact of its existence. By integrating not just poetry but poets, not just dreams but dreamers into the scope of its vision, San Franciscos work life will begin to achieve some balance. Until this happens, the pressure that these more artistic realms place on the corporate will not let up.

Also, though it is true that in the Tarot, masculine and feminine energies are embodied by all genders, so for this particular reading I would say that San Franciscos industry needs to take a look at how it treats women and female-identified people need to continue putting pressure on growing powers to make sure they are included in the bigger picture of city life.

San Francisco has always dreamed big. The Star is about taking your wildest inspirations and somehow bringing them down to terra firma and making them real. Ive long felt that San Francisco is a place where people come to see if their theory can be put into practice, whether on an intensely personal level, a community level or within larger cultural movements.

The city sees itself as deeply innovating, whether what is being disrupted are algorithms or the gender binary. There is special energy here that can make things happen, and it favors movements with high ideals, inclusiveness and accessibility. The Star is connected to Aquarius, which is the sign of the future. The future starts in San Francisco (or at least the citys ego believes this). I see this card as evidence that collectively, San Francisco knows it needs to dream bigger and work harder to make idealistic situations exist for more of the city.

In San Franciscos heart, its always been the Summer of Love. Its not a coincidence that this famous moment occurred here, or that the countrys queer community gathered and thrived here. Deep down, it is love that rules this place, that makes it work. Its the foundation that everything is currently built upon, the big hearts of the citys ancestors and their forgotten labors of love that made the city great.

The image on the card is two people exchanging cups, and its this human connection, emotional communication, that is still the heart of the city very deep and hard to extinguish. There is a channel between this underground love and the conscious idealism of The Star. The city thinks of itself as a loving place and needs to draw upon that history in order to manifest more progressive projects.

Okay, it is not a coincidence that San Franciscos recent past is the richest dude in the deck. The King of Pentacles is materialistic, hes great at business, he earns his money and spends it luxuriously. The past always brings us to the future, so it is the work and influence of this man (these men) that has made San Francisco the epicenter of industry it currently is. But its done so at the expense of the citys spiritual and emotional aspects, as seen in the Queen of Cups. One tarot reader explained to me once that she sees that crossing card as the bridge that brings us from the past to the future, and if that is the case, the serene, emotional queen is taking our hand, pulling us away from big daddy moneybags and leading us to

The Future is Female, yall. With all my fingers crossed, I hopefully report that the energies native to the feminine healing, nurturing, love, beauty, abundance, giving, serenity, creativity are ready to lovingly ambush San Francisco. Out with the yang, in with the yin: a feminine renaissance, with intuition, healing arts, art in general and a need for equality as the citys zeitgeist. Precedence given to the experience of female-identified and otherwise feminine people. A movement to ease the burden on mothers at all economic levels, and a sense that San Francisco is our mother, and all of us her children, and lets start taking better care of her and of each other.

Yes, San Francisco won the karmic lotto, if high-paying jobs and skyrocketing rents are how one defines fortune. The city has established itself as a world-class location with all the cash and prizes that go along with that. It is, in so many ways, blessed. But the what goes up must come down rule applies to this card we may currently be that Sphinx, riding high, but the jackal and the snake will get their turn, too. Better for the city to keep its eye on the center to better able ride out the inevitable downs that come with these magnificent ups. But no matter what ever happens, the city always rises. It is The Wheel of Fortune.

This card represents the environment the querent finds themselves in, but as the querent in this reading is an environment err, uh, hmmmm. I guess this card stands for you, all of you, the citizens of San Francisco, influencing her vibes and character on the daily. And generally speaking, the people of San Francisco are new. They think thoughts that havent been thunk before, they try things that havent been tried, they live lives that havent been lived. And they love it. Thought, literature, communication, media, these are all ruled by the Ace of Swords and they rule the people of San Francisco. Debates, healthy and otherwise. These are a people who will go to the mat for what they believe. On some level, everyone knows that they are at the vanguard of our culture, and the city loves this about her children.

This card is the anxiety card of the spread, and weve got the dull, plodding if capable Knight of Pentacles. While the fantasy of big King Pentacle in the citys past is pretty attractive to pretty much everyone (even I wouldnt mind eating grapes off his lap), this Knight of Pentacles is the average Jos reality: a working stiff whose job eats her life and who doesnt have much time for anything cool or fun or creative. Is this what the city is afraid of becoming? I see this as all the inspired people who moved to town with dreams only to find themselves with big rent they need to work hella hard to pay, leaving them too exhausted to pursue their real life at the end of the day. San Francisco, dont let this be you! It suggests to me that the city is aware that its becoming a bore, and it keeps them up at night.

The card that ties it all together, and here we have the magnificent Queen of Wands, emphasizing the already-strong message that it is time for feminine energies to take the wheel. This Queen builds upon the watery power of the Queen of Cups and the nurturing abundance of The Empress and sets it ablaze. If San Francisco cant get itself together to honor the feminine, the feminine will just storm the castle. Queen of Wands is crafty and powerful, full of energy and ideas, has tons of endurance and stamina, creativity and chutzpah.

Artists, lovers, politicians, activists: this Queen makes shit happen. Youre either on her train or youre eating dust. All aboard, San Francisco! Its time to leave the past behind.

Tesla’s Model 3 And The Transition To Sustainability – HuffPost

The first Model 3s were delivered this week, and with it, perhaps the beginning of the end of the internal combustion era. This might be the way horse stable owners felt when they first saw a Ford Model T. The new Tesla is as snazzy as the very expensive earlier models, but its price is a more affordable $35,000 rather than the upwards of $100,000 cost of more luxurious models. Elon Musk, like the late Steve Jobs, seems to know how to bring a product to market and create buzz around it. Like the iPhone and the first Model T, the trick seems to be to create a good that you know people need, or could easily learn to need. Marketing geniuses seem to have a feel for how to create and sell these goods. It seems more craft than science, but listening to Musk, you know he has that feel. Its true that a sustainable, renewable resource based economy requires fewer rather than more cars, but the cars we end up with need to be capable of running on electricity from renewable sources rather than gasoline refined from fossil fuels. The Tesla 3 is a big step in the right direction.

In the United States we need to build more and better mass transit options, but due to our land use development pattern in most of the country, personal transportation will always be part of our mix. The transition to personal electric vehicles will take decades, but clearly the marketing trick is to create a product that is loved by consumers and experts. The initial reviews of the Model 3 last week were nearly uniformly positive. Jack Stewart in Wired observed that:

This car feels like an automotive tipping point, a sign that electric vehiclesand hopefully, the infrastructure that supports themhave finally come into their own. Time will tell whether Musk & Co. can hit their deadlines and keep production lines hummingElon Musk revealed Friday at the Model 3s coming out party that over half a million people have now plonked down $1,000 to reserve their ownbut for now, it looks quite nice.

Tesla has to demonstrate the manufacturing capacity to build the new car effectively and efficiently, and for it to move beyond novelty, the issue of charging stations, especially for people without home garages must also be engaged. But it appears that the key battery technology needed for the electric car is here.

The growth of the electric vehicle market provides an example of how the transition to a renewable resource based economy will probably take place, particularly if you combine it with the sharing economy. As the vehicles range improves, and its reliability is established, we will start seeing it appear in ride-sharing services. So many more people will ride in a Tesla than will own one. Still, the Tesla is so beautiful that many people will want to buy it, own it and make sure their friends see it parked in their driveway. People will experience these vehicles via many different models of use. The transition will be very gradual. The pace of replacing the internal combustion engine will take decades. People replace their cars more slowly than they used to. According to Antonio Bent, Kevin Roth, and Yiou Zuo, the average lifetime for passenger cars has increased from 12.2 to 15.6 years between 1970s and 2000s. Cars last longer because they are made better than they used to, and while people often trade in old cars for new ones after a few years, the old cars remain in use through the used car market for many years. No one will simply toss out a car because electric cars are better and cheaper than gasoline powered cars. But the transition will take place as new electric vehicles beat out gasoline powered vehicles in the marketplace.

We will see a similar process as home solar energy battery installations become more affordable and reliable. Even if utilities refuse to buy back excess solar energy, if a homeowner can store it for their own use, its easy to see how over time, they will simply decide to disconnect from the grid. We may never get distributed generation, we may simply see decentralized home generation. At first, the homeowner will notice their electric bill going down, then they will replace their gas appliances with electric ones, and after a few years without using power from the grid theyll just disconnect. Weve seen this with landlines, we are seeing it with cable TV service. Electricity will be next. The pace of change will be determined by market forces and the price, reliability and attraction of new technologies.

Government and public policy could accelerate or impede the pace of change. We have seen Secretary of Energy Rick Perry try to define threats to the electric grid as a national security issue. He seems to want to prevent renewable energy from being sent to the grid. This position is absurd, but seems to be part of Trumps all out push to revive fossil fuels. Sad! It would be far better for the planet if the trend toward renewable energy was accelerated, but regardless of governments stance, it is easy to see the market appeal of low cost, completely decentralized energy.

Another key element of this transition is to ensure it is not limited to the wealthiest nations and that the environmental impact of products such as the new Tesla are monitored and minimized throughout the supply chain. As auto ownership in China, India and eventually Africa increase over the coming decades, a concerted effort is needed to leapfrog internal combustion technology and move directly into electric cars. A global economy with increased production and consumption of transport and other consumer items could devastate the planet if it is not managed sustainably. Developing a high throughput economy without massive environmental destruction is the single greatest challenge we will face in the 21st century.

The process of transitioning to such an economy is underway, and the introduction of vehicles such as the new Tesla is part of that process. The temptation to make short term profits at the expense of environmental destruction remains and should never be ignored. There are a variety of means available to counter this temptation. Visibility and exposure can be a powerful weapon to counter wanton ecological destruction. Videos of degraded rivers, toxic waste sites and other acts of destruction can be very powerful. Lower priced communication, information and the growth of environmental advocacy organizations around the world, enable consumers in the market place to learn about corporate polluters and then reflect their environmental values in their purchasing decisions.

None of this will be easy, simple or without setbacks. Earth systems observation, environmental monitoring, analysis and projection are critical to understanding the impact of human consumption. Education and communication of conditions and impacts are also critical. We need a more sophisticated understanding of the impact of our actions. When that understanding impairs the interests of powerful economic forces, we can expect powerful resistance to new knowledge and analysis. We have already seen that with tobacco and fossil fuels. Nevertheless, our dependence on science and technology for our well-being requires the use of science to understand its impact on natural systems and on our own health.

The new Tesla is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of a visionary entrepreneur. It provides an indication of what we are capable of and hopefully is an element of the broader transition we require. Lets celebrate this achievement and move on to the next one.

China-obsessed Australia to wake up, smell hard landing – The West Australian

Pippa Malmgren cannot get over the fact Australia has tied itself to the low-value end of the Chinese economy but doesnt want anything to do with Chinas greatest economic initiative since the Great Wall.

The former adviser to US Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama wants a China-obsessed Australia to wake up and smell the hard landing.

For Australia the big issues are Chinese, Dr Malmgren said on a visit to Sydney.

China has already had its hard landing its not a question of if and they realise theyre not competitive anymore.

Domestic consumption isnt happening in China, thats why theyre going abroad it isnt happening fast enough, yet why is Australia banking on that?

According to the former deputy head of global strategy at UBS who was among the few to call the GFC; selling her house and moving her family to rent before the 2007 crash Chinas middle class is not burgeoning the way people thought it would.

So instead China is building a middle class elsewhere.

Theyre building it in Burma, in Central Asia , in Western Europe, in Portugal. And this is critical, by the way, because you notice theyre not investing in Australia , Dr Malmgren said.

China has shifted the paradigm to its high-profile One Belt, One Road initiative , connecting regional economies, driving Chinese branding and interests and, importantly, building GDP outside the country.

And the commitment to the build-out of global infrastructure is truly mind blowing. Its massive, Dr Malmgren said.

I find it really interesting Australians are very happy about being tied to the Chinese economy but now the Chinese want to make GDP abroad, the Australians dont want to go with them.

So far the Federal Government has not signed an MOU, alongside 65 other countries, to take advantage of the most ambitious global infrastructure initiative in a generation.

Dr Malmgren said it was an opportunity for not just in the words of former Austrade chief economist Tim Harcourt selling rocks and crops, but for Australia to finally mature as an economy.

The author of Signals: How Everyday Signs Can Help Us Navigate the Worlds Turbulent Economy, has been scratching her head as to why Australia does not grow up and join the latest industrial revolution.

Youve been a resource-based economy and I really wonder, I always ask the question why dont the Australians move up the value-chain, she said.

I mean China has moved up the value-added ladder. They used to make cheap manufactured goods, now theyre going to make more sophisticated manufactured goods cars, white goods theyre going to build global brands, why does Australia always just stop half way?

Dr Malmgren said Australia was better placed than many nations with its skill sets and human capital but had failed to focus on manufacturing.

Theres no excuse anymore for Australian businesses not to be present on the global landscape, she said.

DON PRIDMORE: Be careful what you wish for… – The Guardian

The intent for an income guarantee is laudable. We all want to see people do well, particularly the most vulnerable. But will the results be those that are intended? To me, there is a fundamental problem with the concept. Income guarantees address the symptom of poverty, not the causes. Perhaps a fable will illustrate this point. Once upon a time, in a place not unlike our own, there was a medical clinic. It had many doctors and nurses but there always seemed to be unmet needs; people waiting, maladies untreated. The administrator of the clinic took note that there was a common denominator for all the patients they were all in pain or discomfort. So he came up with a simple, all-inclusive solution. He laid off the medical staff, provided all clients with pain relievers and sent them home. It started off not badly. Everyones most immediate need was met. For some it actually worked out well. They had relief and they progressed to better and sustained health. For most, however, not so much. They needed stitching, or medications, or therapy or other services. Whats worse, for some patients the process developed a dependence on pain relief. They never did recover. Now, back to reality, nobody would ever run a medical clinic this way. Yet is this not the approach of an income guarantee? If people are poor, give them some income. People fall into poverty for many reasons. It could be a lack of education or training, health problems, family issues, mental health challenges, low wages, poor economy, etc. While the guarantee would provide immediate relief, it wouldnt address the limiting issues. Worse, it would almost definitely create dependence. This is critical because our sense of well being often revolves around work and productivity. It is unintended by the authors, but an income guarantee would be a disincentive to work. It would serve not to enable people but to sedate them. Advocates would respond that there is no reason a guarantee couldnt be combined with support measures to better address these barriers. Perhaps, but this is where a critical question comes in where will the money come from? An income guarantee is enormously expensive. Some of the cost would have to come from new money; there is just no other way. But some of the funding would have to be taken from existing programs. Employment insurance, job creation, community development, counselling service and others would all be on the chopping block. In most cases, it would be the very services low income people most depend upon. And what of the savings projected for reduced demand on things such as health care and the criminal justice system? Even if demand did fall, what politician would be bold enough to cut something like health care? Look to the example of education. Did fewer children in the system lead to reduced spending? This is not to say that educational spending should have been reduced (it shouldnt) but it does say that the idea that a guarantee will result in savings is highly suspect. Personally, I would very much love to have a simple, all embracing cure for poverty. But I think we should be directing our energies to the more complex set of tasks around economic development, income incentives, disability benefits, childcare, social assistance and support services. A basic income guarantee would be prohibitively expensive, would result in a work disincentive and would fail to come to grips with why people fall behind. The sentiment is good but the product is in need of a rethink.

Automation shaking up work choices, upskilling key – Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Automation is bringing about changes in work choices like never before as some profiles get obsolete and new job roles make their way to cyber security, cloud and Big Data, among others, says a report.

According to a recent research by Simplilearn Career Data Labs, some of the job roles that may soon go off the radar include those of software test engineer, system engineer, data entry operator and the like.

New IT jobs that will be in demand are expected to be in segments like Big Data and data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things, cloud computing and cyber security, among others.

"The IT industry is seeing the impact of two major trends -- one, that of AI and machine learning. And second, that of legacy skill sets going out of date," Simplilearn Chief Business Officer Kashyap Dalal said.

Dalal further said that "while there is risk to jobs due to these trends, the good news is a huge number of new jobs are getting created as well in areas like cyber security, cloud, DevOps, Big Data, machine learning and AI. It is clearly a time of career pivot for IT professionals to make sure they are where the growth is".

Automation is gaining prominance in sectors like engineering, manufacturing, automobiles, IT and banking. With increasing adoption of automation, labour-intensive jobs are expected to take a hit.

According to a report by digital economy training company Simplilearn, roles such as data analyst and project manager will continue to generate interest, but the skills required to perform these roles will witness a shift.

The report noted that automation can never replace people. That said, to make themselves relevant, employees should evaluate the career choices of future and start bridging skill gaps to fit into the evolving business world.

Based on a survey of 7,000 IT professionals from key metros, the report said that over 50 per cent of IT professionals with work experience of 4-10 years have invested in courses and training programs to help them build new skills.

Is Automation Anxiety All a Hype? – Governing

There is widespread concern these days that robots and automation will soon be permeating much of the American workforce -- taking over factory floors, performing hospitality jobs, becoming ubiquitous in the casinos of Las Vegas. Even Silicon Valley worries about automations effects, although they likely wont be as severe there as elsewhere.

Some recent studies add to these fears, predicting sizable job displacement from numerous forms of automation and artificial intelligence in virtually all corners of the economy. But just as automation will alter industries differently, its effects will be much more intensive in some regional economies.

To estimate the potential effects of automation in those areas, Governing utilized definitions in a University of Oxford study assessing the automatability of individual occupations, then compared them with the Department of Labors most recent occupational employment estimates for the 100 largest U.S. metro areas. About 65 percent of Las Vegas area jobs were found to be susceptible to automation, the highest in any metro area. Much of that stems from the regions large armies of servers, food preparers, cashiers and other occupations thought to be highly automatable. El Paso, Texas, and Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla., similarly employ many of these workers, and registered the next-highest shares of potential automatability.

Professors Carl Frey and Michael Osborne, who conducted the Oxford study, assigned a probability to each occupation by evaluating the extent to which its work activities require creativity, social intelligence and perception, and manipulation. Retail sales accounted for the single largest number of possible job displacements as a result of automation in most regions. The New York metro area, for instance, employs more than 500,000 retail salespersons and cashiers. Predominantly low-wage food service jobs are susceptible to drastic change as well, both in the United States and overseas. Robots will start delivering Dominos pizza orders in Hamburg, Germany, this summer.

Regions with higher education levels should fare better. But the Brookings Institutions Mark Muro points out that theres more to it than that. Physical jobs that are more complex or personalized -- the kinds you wont find on assembly lines -- may actually be less vulnerable to automation than routine office jobs. Often, lower-skill but physical, personal or direct-caring occupations seem quite durable, Muro says.

Middle-class, white-collar jobs, on the other hand, can be significantly liable to automation. A forthcoming report from Brookings reviews hundreds of U.S. occupations, finding use and knowledge of digital skills doubled between 2002 and 2016 and led to a wide array of jobs being digitized, including those of office clerks, customer service representatives and accounting workers. The middle is where there will be some of the most disruption, Muro says.

Some well-paying jobs in demand today arent off-limits from automation, either. A McKinsey Global Institute study concluded that some of the jobs most at risk involve data collecting and processing. Around a quarter of the activities of attorneys and physicians were deemed to be potentially automatable.

Large regions with jobs least susceptible to computerization, using the Oxford studys definitions, are high-tech centers, such as San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., and Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. Other metro areas with highly educated workforces such as Washington, D.C., and Boston similarly appear to have fewer jobs vulnerable to displacement. Regional economies relying heavily on education and health care may be less prone to automation because jobs requiring a high degree of human interaction are thought to be among the most resilient.

(Larger markers represent regions more susceptible to automation based on a University of Oxford study. View an interactive map here.)

Of course, widespread automation wont happen overnight. McKinsey projected that half the work activities across the economy today could be automated by 2055. An analysis by PricewaterhouseCoopers concluded that 38 percent of American jobs were at high risk of automation by the early 2030s. McKinsey studied prior cases of technological upheaval, finding that the time between initial commercial availability and peak adoption ranged between eight and 28 years.

The biggest unknown at this point is whether automation will eliminate more jobs than it creates. Automation itself isnt new, and prior advances in technology and industrialization havent brought about higher overall unemployment over the long term. But a growing number of academics are concluding that automation this time around could, in fact, wield noticeably more harmful effects on the workforce. One highly cited paper by economists Daron Acemoglu and Pascual Restrepo forecasts lower overall employment resulting from the introduction of more robots into the workplace.

Other researchers, notably ones at the Economic Policy Institute, argue that automation has not led and will not lead to higher joblessness. Experts appear to be divided almost evenly on this question: A 2014 Pew Research Center survey of experts found 48 percent agreeing that automation, robots and artificial intelligence will displace more jobs than they create by 2025.

While many unknowns remain, it wouldnt hurt for policymakers to start thinking about how to respond.

Some state workforce boards are looking at the issue. States already typically maintain labor market information divisions that project which occupations will be in demand in future years. Preparing farms and their workers for automation was the subject of a recent meeting of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture. While there arent yet many programs that specifically address automation, some states are engaged in activities that could help alleviate the impact of job losses. Apprenticeships are gaining a lot of attention and are expanding to health care, finance and other fields where they havent been common before. The model is being modified and theyre really trying to ramp it up, says Scott Sanders, executive director of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.

For workers displaced by automation, community and technical colleges will play a crucial role in the pursuit of new careers. The federal government, however, has historically focused little on workforce training, spending much less than other wealthy nations do. We dont do training in America, we do education, says Anthony Carnevale, who directs the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. Our policy is: Go to college.

It was only a few short decades ago that computers began revolutionizing the American workplace. Regions and employers that were early adopters with skilled workforces are well ahead today, and its likely they will continue to be in the years to come.

GM hires Jeep hackers to join Cruise Automation – Detroit News – The Detroit News

To help ensure the cybersecurity of self-driving cars, General Motors Co. has hired two well-known security researchers who hacked into a Jeep SUV.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have been hired by GM subsidiary Cruise Automation, an autonomous vehicle software tech startup GM bought last year, Cruise founder and CEO Kyle Vogt confirmed in a tweet Friday.

A GM spokeswoman said Monday that Miller and Valasek also would be integrated into GMs cybersecurity team led by Jeffrey Massimilla, chief product cybersecurity officer since 2014. They will work as software engineers.

Miller and Valasek will be focused on the many challenges related to securing the autonomous vehicle ecosystem, a GM spokeswoman said in an email. Our cybersecurity mantra recognizes that in order to prevent the worst, you need to engage the best. We believe we can build more secure systems by bringing on the people who excel at defeating them. Protecting the safety and security of our customers is of utmost importance.

The security researchers are known for their remote hack of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee that included disabling the SUVs engine functions and controlling interior features such as air conditioning, locks and the radio.

The hack was detailed in a 2015 Wired magazine article and led to Fiat Chrysler recalling 1.4 million vehicles that were shown to be vulnerable to computer hacking. Owners of Jeeps, Chryslers, Dodges and Rams with vulnerable entertainment systems were sent a flash drive to upgrade vehicle software.

Valasek most recently was security lead at Uber Technologies Inc., according to his personal website. The Pittsburgh resident said on the website that hes interested in automotive security research and reverse engineering, among other things. Miller most recently worked for Chinese ride-sharing company Didi Chuxing.

All automakers, including GM, have been ramping up cybersecurity efforts as self-driving vehicles inch closer to reality. Some, including Fiat Chrysler, have started to pay outside security experts bounties for their hacking information. Fiat Chrysler last year began to offer up to $1,500 bounties for information through a partnership with Bugcrowd Inc., a crowdsourced security-testing company.

GM in early 2016 bought San Francisco-based startup Cruise Automation to help it with autonomous vehicle software development. The Cruise team has grown from about 40 people in California to more than 100, and GM plans to hire 1,100 over the next five years.

The Detroit automaker has said it is giving Vogt responsibility for operations and financial performance of GMs autonomous vehicle business.

GM and Cruise are testing more than 50 self-driving Chevrolet Bolt EVs in Metro Detroit, San Francisco and Scottsdale. The company recently built 130 more self-driving Bolt EVs that GM said in June would recently be deployed for testing in the three sites.

BPO automation may displace 40000, add 700000 jobs – ABS-CBN News

MANILA - The shift to automation can displace 40,000 low-skilled workers in the business process outsourcing industry, but will open up job opportunities for nearly 700,000 higher-skilled counterparts, an industry official said Tuesday.

Low-skilled workers include receptionists and clerks. Job demand will shift to medium and high-skilled jobs that offer higher compensation, said Alex Tined, program director of the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines.

"We need to teach them the new jobs. The challenge now is to make sure that we have people to do the mid and high skill jobs," Tined said.

Tined said some 388,000 jobs would be added to the middle level and another 309,000 to the high skill level, bringing the industry workforce to 1.8 million by 2022 from the current 1.14 million.

The BPO industry is a key job generator and source of dollar earnings that help strengthen the peso.

Tined said the Philippines had fallen to third place among the world's top BPO destinations, as India and China lure companies with more advanced technologies.

China is a relative newcomer to the race, previously dominated by India and the Philippines.

Restaurant Union Member: ‘Tipping is a Horrific Legacy from the Days of Slavery’ – PJ Media

WASHINGTON House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-Va.) called on Republican congressional leaders to support a gradual federal minimum wage increase to $15 per hour by 2024.

That would give nearly 30 percent of Americans a raise and this has the support of 191 members of the House and Senate, Scott said at a news conference Tuesday on Capitol Hill to mark the eighth straight year without a minimum wage hike. Its $7.25 now. Were going all the way to $15.

Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) said its wrong that eight years have gone by since the last time Congress voted to raise the minimum wage.

That doesnt make sense. Other people are getting raises. Other people are getting raises but people who are working hard, young people, older people, people with disabilities, this bill cuts across all of America, she said. Now is the time to raise the wage.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said he is proud of the raise the wage and fight for $15 activists fighting to push Congress to support a $15 starting wage for themselves and future workers.

We dont want to just be sticking with a minimum, right? We are just talking about starting people at $15 and then up from there, right? Up from there because do you want a minimum car? Do you want a minimum boat to float across the river? Do you want a minimum marriage? That means you all aint getting along too good, he said.

What Im saying is we want to start people there and then move up from there and go on to paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid family leave and have a real solid life for people who work hard every day, he added. You guys are making the movement. I cant wait to be there with you again. We are going to fight until we win.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) applauded the warrior activists for advocating in favor of a $15 living wage for every American.

CEOs are benefiting from the American Dream; why not workers who are working each and every day to make this country great? she asked. We need to be a nation of good-paying jobs with benefits and a living wage for each and every one of you.

While the struggle continues, Lee predicted that a $15 minimum wage would ultimately pass out of Congress.

We want a living wage. Workers deserve a living wage in America. Right now, it is unconscionable that in the wealthiest nation men and women are working full-time jobs and dont even earn a livable wage. That is a shame and a disgrace, she said.

Joseph Geevarghese, the director of Good Jobs Nation, said the Fight for 15 movement has always been about a $15 minimum wage and giving every American the right to form a union.
