Intro Transtopianism is a memetic complex, a collection of mutually supporting (and partially overlapping) concepts, lifestyles, worldviews, and philosophies. Transtopianism may include some speculative, or even what one might call religious or spiritual elements, but these are all placed within a solid framework of common sense, where they belong. Transtopianism is designed to be the ultimate rational rebellion against anything and everything that stands in the way of personal growth and empowerment. Unlike most supposedly similarly-oriented philosophies (LaVeyan Satanism, Objectivism, and Nihilism, for example), it recognizes that in order to realize this ideal we must leave the flesh and most of its evolved habits behind. We must evolve beyond them by literally becoming one with our technologies, guided by our rational desire to become like our finest imaginary gods: eternal, omniscient, omnipotent. That is the true significance of gods; they are the embodiment of mans deepest aspirations and desires, which, until recently, were doomed to remain just that. National security specialist to address Ascension GOP Roundtable

Jim LeBlanc, vice president of the New Orleans Chapter of InfraGard, will be the featured speaker at the Ascension GOP Roundtable sponsored by Ascension Republican Women. The Roundtable begins with a meet-and-greet at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at Galvez Seafood, 40306 La. 42, Suite 9, in Prairieville.

Bizarre Pacifist Ascension strategy leads to player bans that were later reversed – The Rift Herald

It seems a team of five has found an unbeatable strategy for the Ascension rotating game mode.

According to Reddit user TheCheeZZ, who made a post on the League of Legends subreddit on Tuesday, he and some friends were matched into an Ascension game with a team that chose all tank champions. The tank team refused to do any damage or attack and simply died over and over again. Every time they could back, they bought tank items. Eventually, the team that wasnt being attacked, TheCheeZZs team, couldnt do damage to the tanks anymore, because in Ascension, you can only buy items when you die.

TheCheeZZ said his team surrendered right around the 60 minute mark after it became clear that they could neither take objectives thanks to the tank teams collection of Sunfire Capes which interrupt the objective taking mechanic in Ascension or fight, meaning that the tank team won, despite doing almost nothing.

The thread was updated shortly after to reflect the fact that, in a moment of frustration TheCheeZZs team reported the tank team, and the team ended up receiving a 14 day ban. The protests came shortly after, with other Reddit users upset that the team was banned for a strategy that isnt explicitly outlawed. Riot responded to the players concerns.

According to a tweet from Rioter Ben Forbes, the bans were reversed and the players that were banned were contacted.

The official League of Legends Reddit account then posted a follow-up thread stating that they know that the pacifist strategy is horrifically unhealthy, and theyll be looking for a way to fix that. The players were unbanned because despite it being a completely unfun way to play, they were playing with the intent to win.

We can probably expect some changes to Ascension the next time its on the Public Beta Environment.

A Better Ascension announces meetings about parish manager plan – The Advocate

GONZALES A nonprofit group of business leaders pushing to change Ascension Parish's form of government announced on Thursday plans to hold the first of three community meetings on Aug. 21 in Prairieville.

A Better Ascension wants voters to change the home rule charter and do away with the elected parish president in favor of a Parish Council-appointed parish manager in a bid backers say would improve government efficiency.

Critics have already emerged who oppose the proposal, saying it would deprive voters of being able to directly elect parish government's top executive.

We believe our proposed charter amendments will make the Ascension government more effective, in addition to making our parish a better place in which to live, said Jamie Bourgeois, A Better Ascension board member, said in a statement Thursday. We look forward to meeting with our neighbors throughout Ascension to present our amendments and, more importantly, to listen to their feedback.

A Better Ascension officials had earlier proposed four meetings starting Monday but, with the latest announcement, they have pushed back the meetings' start date and reduced their number to three. The meetings will be at the following locations:

*Monday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. Sammy's Grill, Prairieville.

*Thursday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Church of Donaldsonville, Donaldsonville.

*Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m. City Room.

During the meetings, the Better Ascension board plans to present the proposed amendments, data showing how the Parish Council-parish manager form of government would benefit Ascension, success stories from other communities and an explanation of the process of approving the charter amendments, Better Ascension officials said. The public is invited and will have a chance for questions and answers after the initial presentation, officials said in the statement.

Brandon Trosclair, A Better Ascension board member, said the group wants feedback and buy-in from the community.

A majority of voters in the parish must approve any change to the home rule charter, the parish's plan of government. For an amendment even to get on the ballot, two-thirds or eight members of the 11-member Parish Council, must agree to put the measure on the ballot.

Four Ascension golf standouts make All-Metro teams – Weekly Citizen

None of the parish's golf teams were able to bring home state championships this past season, but that didn't stop many of the area's stars from putting up tremendous performances.

Due to this strong play, four of the parishs golfers were recently named to the Baton Rouge areas All-Metro teams.

Three male competitors made the Division I-II squad. Two of those selections came from Dutchtown.

These All-Metro standouts were Jacob Merritt and Collin Stinson. Both golfers put up identical numbers in certain statistical categories this past season.

Merritt and Stinson both scored an 88 at the Metro tournament, and both Griffins shot four over par during the regular season.

The other parish stalwart that made the All-Metro boys team was St. Amants Ben Wilcher. Wilcher finished the regular season with a 3.5 shots over par average.

Zacharys Brady Bennett was named the Division I-II Outstanding Player. Two of his teammates joined him on the All-Metro team.

Catholic of Baton Rouge placed a team-high four golfers on the squad.

As for the girls, only one Ascension standout was about to make the All-Metro team. She also came from Dutchtown.

Hagan Bell was the Lady Griffins lone selection.

Anna Heine of St. Josephs Academy was named the areas Outstanding Player.

St. Josephs and Zachary each placed two golfers on the All-Metro team.

Auditors: Strong sales taxes continue to boost Ascension government reserves – The Advocate

DONALDSONVILLE Ascension Parish government's auditors say the parish ended 2016 flush with cash despite having spent more than $12 million from its reserves on flood recovery last year.

Despite the flood expenses, the parish was able to boost its total reserves by $5.4 million last year to $192.7 million, but more than $105 million of that surplus is set aside by voters or by Parish Council spending priorities for recreation, parish jail expenses, drainage, fire protection or health and mental health services.

Auditor Tommy LeJeune, of Faulk and Winkler, told the Parish Council recently that continued strong sales tax collections have helped build the surplus. The past three years of collections have hovered around $55 million, about $15 million per year more than what the parish took in for 2012.

At the same time, the total surplus has risen from $147.5 million in 2012 to more than $192.7 million in 2016 also an increase of about $45 million.

"So, 15 times three is $45 million, so the whole point of it is you're not spending up to the high point of sales tax," LeJeune said. "So basically what you have been able to do is experience a really lucrative time from a sales tax collection perspective and you have been able to bank it."

He added that eventual reimbursement for last year's flood expenses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency would only further improve those surpluses. Since the audit was finished, the parish has received about $7.3 million in reimbursements.

LeJeune made his comments Aug. 3 at the Parish Courthouse in Donaldsonville as he reviewed the 2016 audit for the council. While the audit detailed the parish's strong financial status, it also uncovered a number of findings in the parish U.S. Housing and Urban Development public housing program and in travel, personnel and pay, and Lamar-Dixon Expo Center policies and procedures.

The Parish Council members have asked the parish administration to update them in a coming meeting about its progress in responding to many of these findings.

LeJeune's report of the parish's flush accounts prompted only some mixed reaction from the council. The parish is trying to fund major road improvements without a new tax and developing further spending on drainage improvements in light of last year's floods. Part of the road plan, Move Ascension, counts on a new debt issue and big part of the reserves in the parish road fund.

While the parish has continued to see population growth, the strong sales tax collections have come mostly during a period of expansion in the parish's industrial sector, the majority contributor to sales tax collections. That expansion has slowed some more recently.

After LeJeune's initial report on the surpluses, Council Chairman Bill Dawson sought to downplay their size, noting that only about $28.6 million is fully discretionary and could be spent for any purpose. He questioned LeJeune about whether that discretionary reserve was too high or low to ensure sound savings for unexpected expenses.

LeJeune said governments typically want to have a savingsequivalent to three to six months of annual spending. He said the $28 million fits within the lower end of that range.

"I don't think it's too low. I think it's a good comfortable number," LeJeune said.

But later, Councilwoman Teri Casso said that every year she hears the audit, she thinks, "My God, we have money. We are in a wonderful situation.

"We are not in the savings business. We need to be providing services, and so I look forward to next year seeing that we have spent the taxpayer's money, and if we're not going spend it, we need to give it back to them or quit collecting," she said. "It is time to spend it."

Auditors found the parish had about $27.8 million in a capital surplus fund for drainage and another $22.5 million for roads. The $40 million to $45 million Move Ascension program plans on tapping that reserve for nearly half its spending.

"Its a nice sum of money," LeJeune said of the road reserve, "but it's probably not an amount that solves all the parish's traffic woes."

Mars concept vehicle offers glimpse into future of space exploration … – NJTV News

Its 5,500 pounds and close to 11 feet tall. Its no surprise that this Mars rover, commissioned by the Kennedy Space Center, caught eyes at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City when it made a stop there on its tour around the country last month.

Its a prototype of what people could be driving when they live on Mars. Right now, there are rovers on Mars surface, but this vehicle would allow people to one day travel the planet and have a habitat and laboratory.

Theres a laboratory in the back, theres four seats up there so there are all kinds of monitors so they could be determining the terrain and what the temperature is like and the elements outside, said tour guide Dana Jondahl with Kennedy Space Centers Summer of Mars traveling exhibit.

As we head inside the Mars rover to get a closer look, former NASA astronaut Jon McBride showed us around. He told us about his mission in 1984 on the space shuttle Challenger.

I was very fortunate to be in the first class of space shuttle astronauts to join NASA in 1978, the first American woman Sally Ride was in my class, first African-American Guy Bluford, so it was a very unique group of highly skilled individuals, said McBride.

He said before you ever get on a space ship for takeoff, you have about two years of specific training for the particular mission, followed by two to three years of basic training. But once you lift off, he said, its a rush.

When the actual shuttle lifts off, were going 100 miles an hour by the time the tail gets to the top of the tower, and after about two to three minutes Im being pushed into my seat three times the force of gravity, McBride said.

McBride said he was lucky to live out his dream to fly the space shuttle. Now, hes hoping the next generation is inspired to find a way to Mars to do further research.

We know there was water on Mars at one time in its history, lots of it, said McBride. They have a Grand Canyon thats essentially from San Diego to New York City, and deeper and wider.

McBride said that indicates there could have been life at one time. So what happened to it? he asks.

By going there we might find the answer to that question and in turn find out more about Earth. With the support of Congress and the president, McBride said we could be on Mars in the next 10 to 15 years.

The first human to go to Mars is likely already born, said McBride. Do you know that that means you can be the first human to go to Mars?

Liberty Science Center President and CEO Paul Hoffman said the Mars concept car shows off the future of space research and technology, but it also gives kids a chance to consider becoming the next space scientists and technologists.

When I was seven, my neighbor let me look through a telescope and see the rings of Saturn and I was hooked on science and space science, Hoffman said.

Hoffman hopes the Mars rover will do the same. And sitting with an astronaut, its easy to feel excited about the possibility of going to Mars.

Ghana Launches Its First Satellite As Part of A New Era of African Space Exploration – Atlanta Black Star

African nations have entered the space race, with Ghana as the most recent example of this bold technological achievement. Built by a group of engineers from All Nations University College(ANUC) in Ghana Benjamin Bonsu,Ernest Teye Matey, and Joseph Quansah the small satellite was launched on a SpaceX rocket from Kennedy Space Center, and was sent to the International Space Station in June, becoming fully functional in July after being deployed from the ISS.

Known as GhanaSat-1, the satellite is a CubeSat, a miniature satellite and a class of nanosatellites used for research purposes. These satellites are manufactured in Units (or U), with each U measuring 10 centimeters by 10 centimeters by 11 centimeters (3.94 inches by 3.94 inches by 4.33 inches), and weighing less than three pounds (1.33 kilograms), according to NASA. CubeSats are built 1U, 2U, 3U or 6U in size, and serve as auxiliary payloads on previously planned missions.

GhanaSat weighs 2.2 pounds, generates power from solar cells and internal batteries, and contains low- and high-resolution cameras. The satellite also broadcasts Ghanas national anthem and other songs from space.

This particular satellite has two missions, Richard Damoah, a Ghanaian professor and assistant research scientist at NASA, toldTechCrunch.It has cameras on board for detailed monitoring of the coastlines of Ghana. Then theres an educational piece we want to use it to integrate satellite technology into high school curriculum. GhanaSat-1 will also send signals to the Space Systems and Technology Laboratory at ANUC. Damoah noted that whileGhanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo congratulated the team, the government of Ghana did not officially sponsor the project. Rather, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Japans national space agency, provided most of the resources for the two-year, $500,000 project. President Akufo-Addo and his cabinet, according to the professor, have pledged support for a GhanaSat-2, which will have high resolution cameras and would monitor such activities as water use, deforestation and illegal mining in Ghana.

Ghana is not the only nation on the African continent taking the plunge and heading off to space. According to Elsie Kanza, Head of Africa at the World Economic Forum, Several nations, such as South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia have space agencies.

South Africa launched its first satellite in 1999, a second in 2009, and established its national space agency, SANSA, in 2010. In 2013, South Africa sent its first CubeSat into orbit. Ethiopia launched the first space program in East Africa in 2015 with the building of a $3 million, privately funded observatory, the first step in creating an official national space agency. The second most populous African nation, facing poverty and hunger, is looking to science as the key to development. In Northern Africa, Algeria formed its space agency in 2002 and launched six satellites since that time, while Egypt launched its first satellite in 2007.

Nigeria has sent five satellites into space, with the most recent, NigeriaSat-X, built by NigeriasNational Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). Professor Seidu Mohammed, Director General of NASRDA, announced Nigeria will need an international space stationby 2030, as Pulse reported. Last year, the Nigerian Space Agencysent a delegation to China to discuss the logistics and investment for Africas first manned space mission. In May, the government of Angola announced that its first satellite Angosat1 will be launched this year. The project is receiving support from the Russian space federation.

There are collective efforts toward an African outer space policy as well. The African Union(AU) has embarked on a plan for Pan-African collaboration in space. Last year in Addis Ababa, the AU adopted the African Space Policy and Strategy Initiative, as the first of the concrete steps to realize an African Outer space Programme, as one of the flagship programmes of the AU Agenda 2063, the AU said in a statement. AU Agenda 2063 is a strategic plan for the socioeconomic transformation of the continent over the next half century, with a focus on growth and sustainable development and a vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful continent that is a dynamic force on the world stage. The international body has urged its member states, partners and commission to raise awareness on the central role of space science and technology in Africas socio-economic development and mobilize domestic resources for the implementation of this policy and strategy.

The African Union Commission, which acts as the executive and secretariat branch of the 54-member organization, has made it a priority tocoordinate all space activities among the AU countries, and to gradually move Africa from a consumer of space technology to a world leader in the development of technology. AU members are committed to using space and its technologies for peaceful means, and seek involvement in developing a space code of conduct, given the increased congestion in space due to the over 60 countries operating Earth-orbit satellites. The European Union has drafted such a proposal for a code of conduct, and the AU says it has been marginalized and, at best, a minor player in the process of devising this policy.

Raising the necessary capital for any space program, African or otherwise, is crucial. This reality was underscored in 2013, when Great Britain announced it was providing 1.5 billion (US$1.94 billion) in aid to Africanand Asian nationswith rocket and satellite programs. Godfrey Bloom, a member of the European Parliament from the nativist UK Independence Party, criticized the amount of foreign aid given to Bongo Bongo Land,claiming his remarks were not racist because bongo is a term for antelope. While funding, poverty and huge disparities among member nations remain a challenge for Africas space aspirations, working in its favor are high rates of economic growth, high population growth and a vibrant, growing youth population. Ghana, for example, has a population whose media age is 30. The country enjoys cultural and ethnic diversity, a boom in tourism, and a better educated population that learns the Ghanaian language alongside the official language English, French and other languages. African cities such as Nairobi, Lagos and Cape Town are regarded as vibrant innovation hotspots in technology, driven by entrepreneurial startups and universities.

Other nations of the world have utilized space technology as a means of scientific advancement and socio-economic progress. Ghana and other nations of the African Union and are no exception, as they become players in the global space race, and seek leadership status in the frontiers beyond Earth.African nations are ensuring they will not be left behind in the field of space exploration, and hoping to maximize the benefits of this technology to solidify their economic future.

With North Korea and America both refusing to blink first in the ongoing crisis, despot Kim Jong-un has now announced a massive army recruitment programme.

An article in a Pyongyang-based propaganda newspaper today declared already more than 3.5 million people had signed up to fight.

The propaganda rag claimed these millions were volunteers and included students and former soldiers - although the truth is likely to be far more grim.

As revealed by Express.co.uk last year, life in the North Korea army is one of pain, hunger and oppression.

And with absolute obedience to the three-generation Kim dynasty demanded, these military volunteers are more likely to be malnourished and desperate civilians forced into action.

The newspaper claimed 3.47 million people had asked to enlist in the army since the North Korean crisis began.

The piece said: "All the people are rising up across the country to retaliate against the US thousands of times. In North Hwanghae Province, 89,000 young men pleaded to enlist or reenlist on August 9 alone.

It comes as the war of words moved another step closer to all-out conflict after US president Donald Trump said America was locked and loaded for battle.

And Japan has moved missiles and defence systems to its major cities in preparation for a missile attack.

Hiroshima, Shimane and Kochi are particularly at risk as any North Korea missile fired at the US territory of Guam would pass directly overhead.

While Pyongyang said any missile would be aimed to miss the island and merely used to send a warning, any malfunction of the missile over Japan could put hundreds of thousands of people at risk - and given North Korea's patchy success record in missile launches, this is a major threat.

The foundation of Western philosophy is probably rooted in psychedelics – Quartz

In the 1960s, intellectuals such as Aldous Huxley were fascinated by the effects of LSD, but today most professors are far too worried about respectability and tenure to investigate psychedelics themselves. Which is somewhat ironic, given that the field of Western philosophy has a huge debt to psychedelics, according to Peter Sjstedt-H, a philosophy doctoral candidate at University of Exeter who has written a book on the philosophical significance of drugs. In fact, one of Platos most-cited theories may have been a direct result of hallucinogenics.

In Platos Phaedo, the philosopher says he was inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries, an ancient religious ceremony where participants took kykeon. Its widely believed (thought cannot be definitively proven) that kykeon was a psychoactive substance, which would explain the visions that participants experienced during the ceremony. Sjstedt-H notes that Plato references the Mysteries and seeing that his body is but a shell, which one can escape through these experiences, before he introduces his landmark notion of substance dualism: Namely, the idea that body and soul are distinct.

Under psychedelic experience, you can completely lose the link between you, yourself as a body; and you, yourself as the person that you think you are, including your memories, says Sjstedt-H. Theres this loss to the self, and the self is often associated with the body, so I can certainly see why a psychedelic experience would incline one towards a more dualistic view of the world.

If the Mysteries did indeed involve psychedelics, Sjstedt-H says we can credit them with inspiring some of the greatest and most influential thoughts in history.

[Alfred North] Whitehead famously said, Western philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato. If Plato was inspired by psychedelics, then the whole of the Western canon is unwittingly inspired by these experiences, Sjstedt-H adds.

More than 2000 years later, Sjstedt-H believes that its absolutely essential to understand psychedelic experiences in order to develop a thorough philosophy of how the mind functions. You havent fully explained the mind until youve explained all facets of it, he says.

Psychedelics create a peak type of mind, a peak type of experience and, as such, theyre a valuable consideration in certain philosophical mysteries, like understanding the relationship between the brain and the mind. Research has shown that parts of the brain are less active during psychedelic experiences, which is the inverse of what one might expect for a period of heightened consciousness. This finding highlights the complexities of explaining how the mind and brain relate, which is one of the great philosophical challenges, known as the hard problem of consciousness.

But even among non-philosophers, Sjstedt-H believes that a lifetime without trying psychedelics is unnecessarily narrow. Experientially, it would be a pity to live ones life without having experienced the potentials of the human mind, he says. Its a bit like living in the same country all ones life and not going on holiday, not seeing the rest of the world. Its a loss. By having this experience, one experiences more reality because the mind is part of reality.

He adds that psychedelics can open your mind to new beliefs, increase appreciation for nature, and lead to completely new feelings. As well as being intellectually stimulating, Sjstedt-H says that psychedelics can be a sublime aesthetic experience.

Despite the potential benefits, Sjstedt-H does not believe that everyone should take psychedelics. Nor does he insist, as was common in the 60s, that doing so would lead to world peace. When I told Sjstedt-H that I was too afraid of my own mind to risk exploring its suppressed depths, he agreed that was a valid concern. Bad trips are a serious risk, and more troubling for some than others. Those who are religious (and so would be more profoundly affected by visions of devils, for example), are especially anxious, or have suffered serious traumas, could well find psychedelics to be harmful rather than enlightening.

We have no clear idea of how psychedelics produce their effect; but its thought that changes in brain activity create an altered state of consciousness. For those who are able to have a positive experience on psychedelics, Sjstedt-H says taking the drugs can be as profound as reading Nietzsche. Both the philosopher and the substance lead to questioning ones cultural values and societal rules, he notes.

Arguably, taking psychedelics can also enhance the experience of reading philosophy; Sjstedt-H points to the psychologist and philosopher William James, who claimed to only fully understand Hegel after taking nitrous oxide. (Though drugs havent improved Sjstedt-Hs own reading of Hegel.)

Though other philosophers are interested in hearing about his work and experiences with psychedelics, Sjstedt-H acknowledges that few are prepared to try the drugs, at least for now. Many are worried about the psychological risks, put off by their illegality, or simply dont want to mess with their brains.

But Sjstedt-H hopes that growing acceptance of the drugs will allow for a study of how psychedelics could shape the opinions and outlooks of great contemporary thinkers. They were good enough for Plato, after all.

My wife, a painter, was lying on the couch. The five blades of the ceiling fan are each a different color, she said musingly. Different? Yes, she continued, depending on which window the surface of the blade is lit by, or which lamp in the room, and the colors of the nearby walls.

Most of us perhaps see the fan s as off-white and are most concerned with how fast it will cool the room. It occurred to me that ordinary reality is so helpful, and so limited, because it sees things mainly in terms of the obvious use or dangers they suggest. A painters vision would then be analogous to what we call expanded consciousness, which is not better or worse than our usual vision, but which offers different information.

Because ordinary consciousness is so useful, many of us cling tightly to it. Any deviation from it may being forth prejudicial terms. Expanded visions are often dismissed as hallucinations, maybe caused by drugs. The world is divided strictly between material reality and a catch-all category called the spiritual. The former is studied by scientists; the latter, by priests and, may the Lord help us, by psychonauts. Stephen jay Gould called these realms magisteria. This division kept peace between the church and the men in lab coats, but it has confused the category of spiritual.

As a result of the distinction, anything outside of ordinary reality is consigned either to mental illness or to a transcendental realm. In the reaction to drugs after WWII and especially during the 1960s, the classic psychedelics were said to be psychotomimetic or hallucinogenic. In other words, the visions they occasioned were regarded as similar to mental illness. What else could there be, other than ordinary reality and distortions of it?

Except theology. So, as a new name for the hippies psychedelics, people who knew awe is the most important effect concocted the name entheogens, meaning they awaken the god within. The name was ambiguous about whether this god was transcendental or immanent, was a God familiar from the old-time religions with their temples, churches, and mosques or the sort of being who is prayed to or suggested by the increasingly popular phrase, spiritual but not religious.

The classic psychedelics are only one way to get beyond the limitations of ordinary reality, and they don't always effect a change. Even when revelatory on the personal level, the experience may remain trivial socially. Many of us have met guides who say, you dont always get the trip you wanted, but you do get the trip you need. If only this were the case! But at least there is a chance, as with any of the other techniques catalogued so usefully by groups such as the Council on Spiritual Practices (CSP).

(Disclosure: I had the honor to serve on the CSP board for a while starting in the 1990s.)

A friend in touch with a high Google executive tells me that in that firm its a firing offense to shoot down a new idea before it has an opportunity to be thoroughly explored, before it may suggest yet other ideas, one of which may lead to a product. In the non-profit world, too, things that eventually lead to a revolution are often said to be impossible, ridiculous, or in the contemptuous phrase of a physicist, not even wrong. In retrospect, everybody knows that a certain concept is right, even obvious, but not when it was nearly dismissed.

In his influential history of science, Thomas Kuhn advanced the useful hypothesis that after people do normal science for a while, anomalies pile up, and a new paradigm appears that takes account of what did not fit within the old paradigm. Brilliant, except where does the new paradigm come from? To conjure up an intuitive leap is indisputably true, but doesn't tell how it happens. Most ideas that are outside the box will not prove to be true, but one may, and in order to obtain the one its necessary to generate and at least briefly tolerate all the others. The kind of mind that thinks outside the box is not necessarily the same mind that frames and conducts careful experiments to test an idea.

A realist painter has to see what is actually there in order to reproduce it, even when that perception adds little or nothing to our sense of the usefulness (or danger) of an object, such as a ceiling fan. In a similar way, what we call expanded consciousness may help us to get beyond narrow pragmatism.

Theyre being called nootropics -- so called smart drugs that offer a shortcut to sharpen your focus and your thinking. Its an online sensation hitting the $30 billion dietary supplement industry.

Geoff Woo is the CEO of Nootrobox/HVMN, and he says hes sure he can make us smarter and quicker on our feet. Woos company and other competitors want us to think about supplements in a drastically new light.

Typical vitamins focus on micro nutrients, so these things are deficiencies in a persons normal diet, he said. What we look at our company is looking at things that can enhance human performance.

Since hes been taking his smart pills, Coleman Maher says his wrestling workouts are easier.

Its a really, really tough grind and its hard to stay focused or motivated sometimes, Maher said. So, having an energy boost is very valuable.

But beyond an energy boost, could these super supplements also boost our brain power? Piracetam is one smart drug gaining popularity. Its sold as a prescription in Europe, but over the counter here, Dr. Vinh Ngo says.

That one has a lot of research behind it, he said. I think theres a potentially huge audience for Nootropics. Anyone can benefit for having improved cognition.

Since supplements escape regulation by the FDA, doctors remind us to be cautious.

Ive tried to kind of clear up a lot of questions people have, make it safe for them to use, Dr. Ngo said.

So what should we be asking before giving them a try?

Just get some sound advice from a medical professional and do your homework, Dr. Ngo said.

While nootropics is not considered a field of medicine just yet, it has gained a huge following within Silicon Valley. Yahoos Marissa Mayer, and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen both are said to have invested in them. Some doctors point out that there can be a risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, and Dr. Ngo makes all of his patients sign waivers for certain nootropics programs.

NOOTROPICS: BOOST BODY AND BRAIN? REPORT #2445

BACKGROUND: Nootropics were first discovered in 1960s, and were used to help people with motion sickness and then later were tested for memory enhancement. In 1971, the nootropic drug piracetam was studied to help improve memory. Romanian doctor Corneliu Giurgea was the one to coin the term for this drug: nootropics. His idea after testing piracetam was to use a Greek combination of nous meaning mind and trepein meaning to bend. Therefore the meaning is literally to bend the mind. Since then, studies on this drug have been done all around the world. One test in particular studied neuroprotective benefits with Alzheimers patients. More tests were done with analogues of piracetam and were equally upbeat. This is a small fraction of nootropic drugs studied over the past decade. Studies were done first on animals and rats and later after results from toxicity reports, on willing humans. (Source)

A COGNITIVE EDGE: Many decades of tests have convinced some people of how important the drugs can be for people who want an enhancement in life. These neuro-enhancing drugs are being used more and more in the modern world. Nootropics come in many forms and the main one is caffeine. Caffeine reduces physical fatigue by stimulating the bodys metabolism. The molecules can pass through the blood brain barrier to affect the neurotransmitters that play a role in inhibition. These molecule messengers can produce muscle relaxation, stress reduction, and onset of sleep. Caffeine is great for shortterm focus and alertness, but piracetam is shown to work for long-term memory. Piracetam enhances brain oxygen supply and the removal of the inhibitory transmitter GABA, thus theoretically improving attention, memory, and learning. While, there are supplements such as alpha GPC or choline bitartrate for piracetam users, choline is also found in some foods such as vegetables and eggs leading to the theory that a vegetarian diet leads to mental acuity. Modafinil is a prescription drug traditionally used to treat narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an uncommon neurological disorder where individuals are susceptible to repeated sleep throughout the day. Modafinil elevates levels of histamine in the hypothalamus. This leads to a greater amount of alertness. Military pilots have been given this medication for long missions. (Source 1, Source 2)

PRECAUTIONS: Nootropics are sold as nutritional supplements and natural products and refrain from making health claims causing them to avoid close government scrutiny. Piracetam is only one of many formulations in the racetam drug family. Newer ones include aniracetam, phenylpiracetam and oxiracetam and all are available on line where their efficacy and safety are debated and reviewed on message boards and in podcasts. If you are taking Adderall, albuterol or piracetam, you could be at risk for high blood pressure and heart problems. Vinh Ngo, MD, a San Francisco family practice doctor who specializes in hormone therapy, requires his patients to sign waivers acknowledging possible health risks in taking nootropics. While studies have found short-term benefits, Professor Murali Doraiswamy, who has led several trials of cognitive enhancers at Duke University Health System, told The New York Times there is no evidence that what are commonly known as smart drugs, of any type, improve thinking or productivity over the long run. Thats because when you up one circuit in the brain, youre probably impairing another system. (Source)

Tim Miller and his visual effects house Blur are set to tackle the long-in-the-works feature adaptation of cyberpunk pioneer William Gibsons classic novel Neuromancer, with Deadline bringing word that Miller will take the directors chair.

Published in 1984, Gibsons award-winning novel centres on anti-hero Henry Dorsett Case, one of the sharpest data-thief in the business, until a vengeful former employers crippled his nervous system, preventing Case from accessing the worldwide virtual reality network the matrix.

However, when a very mysterious employer contacts Case, he is given a last chance run at getting back into cyberspace. The target: an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence orbiting Earth in service of the sinister Tessier-Ashpool business clan. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, mirror-eyed street-samurai, to watch his back, Case embarks on an adventure to complete the ultimate hack.

The Tullahoma Middle School football team quickly grabbed the lead and never looked back on Thursday night, soundly defeating Coffee County at home, shutting out the Red Raiders 38-0.

After dominating Coffee County on Thursday night, the Wildcats (1-0) will have a quick turnaround when they host Bridgeforth on Tuesday. Kickoff of that game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Stopping the Red Raiders on their first possession, Tullahoma took over at Coffee Countys 43-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Zach Suggs broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run with 5:13 left in the opening quarter. DJ Dillehay added a short 3-yard scamper to punch in the 2-point conversion, making it an 8-0 ballgame.

Tullahoma padded its lead by adding another touchdown on its second possession. This time it was a 9-yard rushing score from Jacob Dixon that increased the Wildcats lead with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Quarterback Ryan Scott hit Brody Melton on a pass to compete the 2-point conversion as TMS led 16-0.

Coffee County looked poised to cut into its deficit on its next possession. However, a crucial penalty stalled that drive. On fourth-and-goal from the 24-yard line, the Raiders elected to go for it, but stalled and Tullahoma took over possession.

Neither team was able to score again, until Tullahoma opened the second half with a touchdown just 43 seconds into the third quarter. Jaxon Sheffield broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run and Cayden Tucker ran for the 2-point conversion, putting the Wildcats up 24-0 with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter.

Suggs added his second score of the evening with another long touchdown run. After the Wildcats took over at their 49-yard line, Suggs broke loose for a 51-yard score with 5:29 left in the third quarter. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful as Tullahoma led 30-0.

Tullahoma added one final third-quarter touchdown with 24 seconds left in the period. Sheffield capped off a six-play drive, punching the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out and Dixon added the 2-point conversion, putting the Wildcats up 38-0.
