Makena Beach State Park has three different entrances and is composed of Big Beach and Little Beach. No matter which one you find yourself spending time soaking up the gorgeous Maui sunshine, you will be super pleased that you did. Did you know that Makena Beach is the most photographed beach in all of Hawaii? Thats right, folks. Get your cameras ready, grab some eco-sunscreen and a hat, and feel excited knowing that youre about to see one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Even if you dont have a full afternoon to spend at Makena, you MUST make a stop here at least for a short visit.

Big Beach is the largest stretch of Baldwin Beach Park. Even if youre heading to Little Beach, you have to access Big Beach to get there. The sand stretches about 2/3 of a mile long and is approximately 100 yards wide from sand to shoreline. This is a popular beach in Maui for weddings, swimming, body boarding, skim boarding and sun tanning. If you are planning to swim at Makena Beach, please make sure to heed all ocean safety signage and NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN. Makenas Big Beach is notorious for the frequent rogue wave situation, so make sure to always be aware of your surroundings. If you dont feel comfortable in the ocean here, dont go in. You might be better off climbing over the rocks on the West end of the beach to swim at Little Beach.

First of all, Little Beach is one of Mauis very few nude beaches on the island. Its an eclectic kind of beach with colorful individuals and great swimming opportunities. If youre there on a late afternoon during a full moon, you may have a chance to see fire dancers and join in on a drum circle! The best time to swim at Makena Beach is during the mid-morning hours. This is when the ocean is at its calmest, and youll have the best water visibility. The water is crystal- clear here, but the sandy bottom can skew the clarity when the tide changes.

Kaanapali Beach is one of the best beaches on Maui for many reasons. This area aspires to many different types of beach-goers and visitors because of all of Kaanapalis conveniences. To find the most central area of this beach, drive to Whalers Village Shopping Center and park your vehicle there. Walk through the shops, and youll find yourself just steps from the sand. The ocean here is divine! The sand is soft, and gently slopes into a calm and crystal-clear ocean. The water feels amazing, and you can always count on lots of sunshine. For those traveling with a bigger group, this area is perfect because there are many different restaurants, bars and shops easily in walking distance for those who tire of the sun easily. Many ocean activities are available from this Maui beach including parasailing, boating, surf board, boogie boards, and stand-up paddle board rentals. The far right of Kaanapali Beach is Black Rock, a popular place to jump off of a huge lava rock formation into the ocean, and also a great place for snorkeling.

Baldwin Beach is definitely one of the most frequented beaches in Mauis North Shore area. Not just because its insanely beautiful, but theres a huge parking lot, public restrooms, showers and many different areas to throw a towel down and relax. If youre headed towards Historic Paia Town, Baldwin Beach is about 2 minutes before you reach the town, pending traffic. There are two beaches in the vicinity; first Baldwin Beach Park (marked by the Baseball diamond, field, and yellow lifeguard tower), then Paia Bay (marked by a skate park and the Paia Youth and Cultural Center). Many newcomers get these two beach areas confused.

There are many things to enjoy at Baldwin Beach Park in Maui. Favorite activities include running, dog walking, swimming, skim boarding, body boarding, sunbathing, socializing and hunting for seashells. This is a great beach for the whole family. The West end of Baldwin is known as Baby Beach, and is where youll find a protective sea wall that provides a sheltered salt water pool- great for little kids and babies! The East end of Baldwin is referred to as the Cove. Here, youll find a great zone for swimming and laying out in the sun. The Cove is also a place youll find North Shore residents basking in the glory of their life with family outings, drum circles, musicians, yogis and more. The middle section of Baldwin Beach should be reserved for confident swimmers. Its not a difficult place to swim, but if youre not totally comfortable with ocean entry and exit, this may not be the best area for you.

Waianapanapa literally means glistening water in the ancient Hawaiian language. En route to Hana, do not miss visiting this area. This beautiful Maui beach area is located at mile marker 32, right outside of Hana Town. This Maui beach park is infamous for its velvety smooth black sand beach, deep cobalt blue water, lava tubes, hiking trails, sea arches, a blowhole, Anchialine pools, and ancient Hawaiian birthing pools. Waianapanapa State Park is a 120-acre protected area with picnic pavilions, 12 rental cabins, tent camping areas, and all the necessary facilities for maximizing on a beautiful East Maui adventure. The serenity of this area is like no other, and everywhere you look is pure natural beauty, with vibrant green flora and fauna, and an essence of Old Hawaii.

Honolua Bay is located about a 20-minute drive North of the Historic Town of Lahaina. Not only is Honolua Bay a famous Maui surfing and snorkeling beach, but it is also one of the most beautiful, most colorful and vibrant beaches within all the Hawaiian Islands.

During the Winter months, Honolua is a popular surf spot for experienced surfers. During the calmer Summer months, Honolua is one of the best places on Maui for snorkeling and scuba diving. The bluffs above the beach area provide a perfect spot for watching surfers from a safe distance or watching an incredibly gorgeous West Maui sunset.

To snorkel at Honolua Bay, guests have a couple of options. You can book a snorkel cruise that will bring you to the bay, or you can drive to Honolua, park near the sign for the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District, and take a short hike through Honoluas forest. When snorkeling at Honolua Bay, enter the water on the right-hand side of the rocky beach. Most people choose to go left to the sandy entrance, but the water is sometimes cloudy there due to a freshwater stream on that side of the bay.

In the ancient Hawaiian language, Palauea translates to lazy. Palauea Beach, also known as White Rock, is seldom visited by tourists and mostly frequented by South Maui locals. Located South of the Kea Lani Beach Hotel in Wailea, White Rock offers a medium sized sandy beach with excellent snorkeling and diving spots. This area of the coastline is well protected, so guests can enjoy less windy conditions and clear visibility when snorkeling here.

To get to Mauis White Rock Bay, follow Wailea Alanui Drive towards Makena. Take a right down the intersection that is after the Kea Lani Beach Hotel entrance. Drive down the paved road until you reach a dirt road. Follow a path approximately 100-feet to the beach.

For more information, please visit: Palauea Beach

Kapalua Bay is one of the most beautiful sheltered beaches in Hawaii. The surrounding area is mostly dominated by the Kapalua Resort and condominium communities, but the bay is still open to the public. Conde Nast publication rated Kapalua Bay as the Best Beach in the World, and the Travel Channel declared it was the Best Beach in America in 1991. Kapalua Bay is awesome because it is also one of the best places to snorkel if youd like a chance meeting with a parrot fish, butterfly fish, wrasse, boxfish, scorpion fish, or humuhumunukunukuapuaa, (former State of Hawaii Fish). You may also see a Green Hawaiian Sea Turtle! The waves break ever so gently upon the shoreline, and the water is clear blue, with an inviting underwater playground. This Maui beach is a great location for couples on a romantic Maui beach outing, or families looking for a quieter beach day. For those interested in ocean activities, there is a beach activities desk with watersports equipment for rent, and information about local activities.

Hamoa Beach is a gorgeous East Maui crescent-shaped beach located about a 1/2 mile past mile marker 51 on Highway 31. Hamoa shares space with the Travaasa Hana Hotel, so some available facilities are only open to hotel guests. This Maui beach is a great place for soaking up the East Maui sunshine and calm aloha vibes. Popular Maui beach activities at this locale include swimming, bodysurfing, snorkeling and surfing. This family-friendly beach has salt and pepper colored sand, clear water, and plenty of shaded areas for a family picnic. This is a fabulous Maui beach for decompressing in a lush setting with gorgeous coastline views. Take it from us, you will not want to leave Hamoa Beach

Olowalu Beach is located on the West Side of Maui, approximately 4 miles South of Lahaina when venturing down the Honoapiilani Highway. If youre coming from South Maui and headed West, Olowalu is found before you reach Lahaina. You will drive through a grove of trees and see the Olowalu General Store and Leodas Bakery. The beach entrance is just before, across the road at mile marker 14.

At Olowalu, beachgoers can find hundreds of acres of the beautiful reef for snorkeling. Olowalu is perhaps best experienced on a snorkeling tour because your charter will perch right where the snorkeling is best (approximately 200-400 yards offshore). If you are a confident swimmer, snorkeling is best 20+ yards out. The beach at Olowalu is great for families traveling with small children. The coastline is shallow and protected, and the ocean has very clear visibility.

Hookipa State Beach Park is one of the most infamous water sports beaches in the world! When visiting Hookipa, look forward to awe-inspiring Pacific Ocean views and a chance to see many of Mauis most proficient water sports athletes and professionals in action. The most popular activities to do at Hookipa include surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand up paddle boarding and snorkeling- all pending season.

You must know that Hookipa Beach Park is an extremely popular local spot. The beautiful community of Maui residents that frequent Hookipa Beach does so on a daily and weekly basis; most have done so their whole entire lives. When visiting Hookipa, definitely make most of the opportunity. Bring only good vibes, and you might find yourself BBQing and sharing laughs with some locals. If you dont want to head down to the beach, there is a great lookout point above the beach park. The Hookipa Lookout is a perfect place to tailgate and take in a sunset, get some cool surfing shots, enjoy food vendors or a freshly cracked coconut.

The Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles are known to frequent Hookipas shores. If you do see them, please do not touch or harass them in any way- watch from afar. They are still classified as an endangered species and protected by both the NOAA, State of Hawaii and Hookipas local families. Hookipa means hospitality in the ancient Hawaiian language, so definitely bring an essence of that with you when visiting. Hookipa Beach Park is definitely one of the most incredible beaches in the universe. Youll easily see and feel why once you get there.

Located on the North edge of the Maluaka Wetlands in South Maui, Oneuli (aka Naupaka Beach) is a little bit of a secret beach on Maui. It is mostly frequented by locals, experienced scuba divers, and naturalists.

Naupaka Beach is actually part of the Makena State Park but located on the Wailea side of the Puu Olai Cinder Cone. In the ancient Hawaiian language, Oneuli means black sands, and thats exactly what youll find at this South Maui beach. Here, youll find that the black sand is actually ground lava rock. Also, as you reach the shoreline, you will notice that the edge of the water is actually hard lava.

Oneuli Black Sand Beach on Maui is not the best option to choose for a lazy day of sunbathing and taking frequent dips into the Pacific. This beach is best for experienced swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers.

To find Oneuli Black Sand Beach, drive South from Wailea towards Makena. Approximately 4 miles South of the Grand Wailea Resort, you will see a dirt access road before Makenas Big Beach parking lot.

Charley Young Beach is accessed through a residential neighborhood at the most northern end of Kamaole Beach Park, (Kam 1). It is located at the cross section of Ili Ili Road and Kaiau Place. The best time to go to this beach is in the morning when the ocean conditions are at its calmest, and before any trade winds pick up. This Maui beach was named after a man that owned a home above the beach for many years, a very lucky man indeed. The length of the beach is approximately 1/3 of a mile long, which makes it great for a beach run on the soft golden sand, a sunset walk, swimming, sunbathing, or day-long picnics with the family. This is also a perfect Maui beach for stand-up paddling, or snorkeling alongside the lava rock formations near the baby tide pools.

For more information, please visit Charley Young Beach

When exploring East Maui, definitely make a stop at Koki on your list of priorities. When headed towards Kipahulu from Hana Town, you will find yourself driving past the Hana Ranch. On the makai (ocean) side of the road, you will see a sign for Koki Beach and Hamoa Bay. Take a left down that road, and you will be actually driving past the old Hana Airport (now, just an open field). As you get to the bottom of the road, you will be forced to go right and youll see parking stalls in front of Koki Beach

Koki Beach is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on Maui, and it is super rich in Hawaiian history. If you are facing the ocean from Koki, look up to your left and youll see a large red cinder hill. This site is called Ka Iwi o Pele which means the bones of Pele in the ancient Hawaiian language. In Hawaiian mythology, it is said that the bones of Fire Goddess Pele were left here after a morbid fight with her sister*

At Koki Beach, all guests should take the precaution of the ocean conditions. During the Summer months, the shoreline opens up with lots of sand for sunbathing, and shallow waters that lead approximately 20-30 feet out pending time of day. After the shallow levels, there is a drop. During the Winter months, ocean conditions at Koki are best for experienced surfers, and strong swimmers only.

Koki is a great beach to explore in East Maui. During certain times of the year, you can find seashells and small pieces of Hawaiian peridot glimmering in the sand. But, NEVER take shells or any kind of rocks off the Hawaiian Islands! It is kapu, also known as really bad luck.

La Perouse Bay is definitely a must-see sight in South Maui! Located at the very end of Makena Alanui Road (Highway 31), all guests will be completely enthralled by this lava rock-ridden bay and the trail that opens into Mauis historically famous Kings Hawaii. La Perouse Bay is named after French explorer Jean-Francois de Galup Comte de La Perouse, the first westerner to map this area of the Island of Maui.

The Bay at La Perouse is the sight of Mauis most recent lava activity (approx. 1790), and also home to some of Mauis most playful Spinner dolphin pods. (If youre traveling to La Perouse to see the dolphins, make sure to arrive early at daybreak.)

This South Maui bay is not a beach for swimming, snorkeling, or too much exploring. But, La Perouse does offer a beautiful vantage point for seeing the outer island of Kahoolawe during a clear day. When at La Perouse, you will see a trail that heads towards East Maui. This trail has much Hawaiian cultural and historical significance and is protected Hawaiian archeological land. If you do venture down this coastline trail, please do not travel off of the main path, and absolutely do not touch or move any rocks or stones. This area is part of Mauis Kings Trail and has many protected cultural and spiritual sights including salt pans, heiau stones (religious shrines), and fishing shrines. Look, but do not touch!

Honomanu Bay can be found between mile markers 12 and 13 on the historic Hana Highway. This East Maui beach is definitely more frequented by residents of the area, a common gathering place for local family BBQs, surfing and fishing. It is definitely worth a pull over on the side of the road when headed towards Hana. Views of the bay and jungle surrounding are magical, and its definitely picture perfect!

If you do try to venture down to the beach, make sure you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and that you know how to use it! There are actually two access roads down to Honomanu Bay, but they are not always accessible. So, be careful driving, and make sure you know how to reverse 4-wheel drive in possibly muddy conditions! (BTW, If you do get stuck, Maui car rental companies will consider this off-road, and you will not be covered.)

From the bluffs, Honomanu is the first bay youll see since Hookipa Beach Park. The Bay in itself is rocky and not great for swimming. The surf break is expert level, and you will definitely experience some localism here* If you do venture into the water at Honomanu, beware of murky conditions (there have been many shark sightings here), rip currents, and hidden reef. There is a freshwater stream that flows from the valley into the Bay that creates a pool on the mauka (mountain) side of the beach. This is a popular spot for kids to play and float on inner tubes, but not deep enough for swimming.

List of Beaches on the Big Island + Beach Map | Hawaii

Beaches on the Big Island are unlike the beaches you can find back home. The island of Hawaii is geologically speaking very young and there are no miles and miles of pristine white powder-sand beaches as you can find on the other, older, Hawaiian Islands.

Instead, our beaches are made out of pitch black sand, crystal green sand, coarse white sand, coral, and even out of newly formed lava rocks!

These are the most visited beaches on the Big Island. You can zoom and navigate the map directly and explore by region and click on the icons to get more information on each beach. You can also find these descriptions in the list below.

A short description of the most popular beaches on the Big Island beaches as can be found on the map above. The order of the list is determined by location of the beach. We start with the most Southern beach in the country (green sand beach), and then go counter clockwise through the beaches near Hilo (east), Waimea (north), and Kona (west):

There are only a few beaches on the rugged south coast of the Big Island, but boy, do they count!

Our favorite green (Papakolea) and black (Punaluu) sand beaches on the Big Island are both on this side of the Big Island. Read more about our Hottest Beaches on Hawaii.

One of the two green sand beaches on the Big Island. Difficult to reach through a 1.5+ hour hike, but definitely worth it. Visit our article on green sand beach for directions:

Guide to visiting Green sand beach (Papaklea) on the Big Island, Hawaii. Driving directions and hiking tips for one of two(!) green sand beaches in the USA.

Punaluu black sand beach is the most famous black sand beach on the Big Island! It is located between Kona and Hilo, and most easily accessible from Volcano Village.

Punalu'u beach is the most famous black sand beach of Hawaii. It is easily accessible and great for swimming, snorkeling, coastal hikes and seeing turtles.

The following are the most popular beaches in Hilo and the larger Hilo area. You can also read more in details about the beaches *in* Hilo.

New black sand beach with strong current and unpredictable waves. This beach was covered by 15 meters of lava in 1990, and is a very interesting place to visit.

Very popular surfing destination in east Hawaii and, since the 2018 LERZ eruption, also the location of the stunning Pohoiki black sand beach. Picnic tables and a playing ground are also present.

You can also find volcanically heated hot ponds at Isaac Hale Beach Park

Isaac Hale (Pohoiki) Beach Park was almost overtaken by lava (in August 2018) but now has a beautiful & brand new black sand beach, lagoon and sandbar..

The Ahalanui beach park was covered by lava in July 2018 🙁

Also know as Pualaa County Park. No sandy beach but thanks to volcanic energy the water here is warm. Perfect for a warm swim on a cloudy day. Stay away during weekends because the pool gets crowded and the water dirty.

Read more about the Ahalanui hot springs on our website.

The Kapoho tide pools were covered by lava in 2018 🙁

No beach, but a perfect place for snorkeling! These are deep (up to 10 ft) tide pools with lots of fish in between the lava rocks. Take shoes for walking to the water because you will be walking over sharp lava.

Read more about the Kapoho tide pools on our website.

Richardsons is the black sand beach closest to Hilo, and the #1 place to snorkel south of Hilo. There are showers, bathrooms, picnic areas, and a lifeguard. The beach and swimming area are protected by a natural lava rock breakwater.

Directions and pictures of Richardson Beach Park:

The black sand beach closest to Hilo. Richardsons is a good place to go snorkeling and swimming with tide pools, calm water and picnic area. Great for kids!.

The stunning white sand beaches on the Kohala coast come close to what we call paradise. Throw in a few black sand beaches surrounded by 1000+ ft high cliffs and you know why this part of the Big Island is the beach lovers favorite.

Difficult to access. The beach looks beautiful and is a very good place to relax after coming down into the valley, but take care with going into the water. This beach is known for its rip currents and high surf, making it a dangerous place to go swimming especially during the winter months

Read more about this beach in our guide to Waipio valley.

Difficult to access, secluded, black sand beach with great views. The beach more often than not consists of large (fist-sized) stones, the water is often murky po there can be strong currents. This all means that this is not a good beach to go swimming or snorkeling.

To get to the beach from the parking lot you have to descend 400 vertical feet to get to the beach. The path down to this beach offer GREAT views and for this reason is one of our 5 favorite hikes on the Big Island. We also have dedicated a complete page to Pololu Valley.

Rocky beach good for snorkeling and diving. In the park you can also find restrooms, picnic tables, and BBQ grills. Great beach for a sunset BBQ!

Technically an abandoned harbor and not a beach. This is a good spot for snorkeling and diving. You can find old sugar mill equipment on land and a few abandoned shipwrecks in the water.

This beach is protected from high surf by an offshore reef and the harbor just north. This makes it a great family beach. In the beach park you can also find a picnic area, camping (with permit) and BBQ facilities.

Protected beach best suited for families with young children. Actually no beach but a lagoon that has virtually no current or waves. No snorkeling.

Kamakahonu (king kam) beach in downtown Kona on the Big island is a popular spot for snorkeling and swimming. Good beach for families with small children.

Also know as Magic Sands because the sand disappears temporarily from the beach with rough surf. There is a good shore break for surfers here, and a lifeguard is always on duty. Showers, a bathroom, and volleyball net are present.

Dark-gray sandy beach with a reef just offshore and a very good place for snorkeling. Parking, showers, picnic tables, and restrooms are present, as well as some shade. This is one of our 3 favorite snorkeling spots on the Big Island.

There is no sandy beach, but this is a very popular destination for snorkeling and kayaking. Spinner dolphins often visit the bay. You can visit the monument erected in honor of Captain Cook via a steep trail or with a kayak over the water also. A permit is required for kayaking.

More information about permits and snorkeling at Captain Cook.

This is the historical site of one of the last Hawaiian fishing villages. They color of the beach is gray and it is made out of lava and coral. It is possible to camp overnight. Restrooms, picnic tables, and showers are available at the park.

Take care in and around the water. As peaceful and inviting as the ocean may look and often is, it also commands respect. Strong, hidden currents can overpower even the most seasoned swimmers. Avoid walking on coral as it may cut your feet, as well as damage the coral. Sea urchins also live in crevices between rocks and coral. Never turn your back to the ocean, and always follow posted signs. More practical tips are:

Hawaiian beaches can be different than the beaches you know from back home: local laws can be different, our sun tends to be stronger because we are closer to the equator, sand on our black sand beaches (made out of lava!) can be VERY hot, and, most importantly, all Hawaiian islands are surrounded by beautiful but fragile coral reefs.

These 7 tips will make sure that you are well prepared for your visit to our paradise-like beaches!

Beaches on the Big Island are not as crowded as they are on the other Islands. Especially if you go to the more remote beaches during weekdays it is possible that you find the beach all to yourself. This also means that some beaches have very basic facilities. Be sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen.

Going to the beach offers many methods of recreation. You dont need to be a fan of tanning to enjoy yourself. Take your snorkel gear and you can spend hours under water swimming between fish in every color of the rainbow. If you like playing in the waves, why not go body surfing or take along a bodyboard, SUP board or surfboard?

You will never have to get bored on the beach even if you travel in a big group! If you are not the sun worshiper your travel companion is, bring a book, good food and drinks, snorkel gear, or whatever you enjoy doing, and do your thing. Big Island Beaches – Hawaii Island Beach Guide | Hawaii.com

The Island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, is home to diverse and unique beaches. From the white sands of Hapuna Beach State Park to the mysterious Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Hawaii Island stands out in its varied coastline vistas. When landing in Kona, one glance out the airplane window at the endless stretch of black lava fields and you may question whether you boarded the correct flight! While much of Hawaii Islands coastline is indeed lava rock, white sandy beaches are found cradled within the glorious blankets of black lava.

Beach access on Hawaii Island is relatively simple if you have a vehicle. A few require a four-wheel drive, but most can be reached with a standard car. All beaches on the island are public, but some are easier to get to than others. Not all beaches have lifeguards so use caution and check water conditions before venturing out for a day in the sun.Read more

Hapuna Beach is one of Hawaiis most popular locations. With white sand beaches, picnic areas and life guards, its easy to see why Hapuna Beach is a favorite among travelers and locals alike. Hapuna Beach is located in the South Kohala District on the westside of Hawaii Island. However, even though lifeguards are present, always use extra caution as the calm looking waters often hide dangerous rip tides and undertows.

This little beach in the heart of Kailua-Kona can have lovely white sand one day and then over night, during rough wave conditions, the sand can literally wash away leaving only the black lava rock exposed. When the waves are calm, the sand slowly reappears. This is a great place to people watch, however if youre not comfortable in the water, its not advised to dive in. The waves are known to be quite powerful.

Kahaluu Beach Park is a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Great snorkeling, and perfect beginner surfing waves, makes this beach a year round favorite. Its located just south of Kona on Alii Drive and offers a safe place for swimming and other ocean activities.

Located between Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the small town of Naalehu, is the black sand beach of Punaluu. A favorite lounging spot for Hawaiian Green Sea turtles, Punaluu is gracefully lined with coconut palm trees and cool breezes. The black sand is made from the abundant black lava surrounding the area. Dont forget your sandals because the black sand gets extra hot!

Gorgeous and perfect. This is Kua Bay. One of the best swimming and sunbathing beaches on the Island of Hawaii. If the crystal clear water doesnt take your breath away, nothing will. Bring lots of sunscreen and water because you wont want to leave. The one downside is there are no lifeguards stationed at this beach. Besides that one downfall, its one of the most beautiful and easily accessible beaches on the island.

Nootropics: Cognitive Brain Enhancers to get Focused

The term Nootropic was introduced in the early 1970s. Often referred to as cognitive enhancers or smart drugs, nootropics are compounds that are used to improve cognitive functions, such as attention, learning, concentration, memory, motivation, and problem solving. While all substances classified as nootropics demonstrate some form of mental enhancement, they all do so in unique ways, through different pathways and mechanisms in the body.[1,2]

The following list briefly covers the most common ingredients that appear in nootropic supplements. If you are interested in learning more, each ingredient has its own page providing further details.

Racetams are cognitive enhancers commonly used to treat a wide variety of neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.

This specific family of drugs branched off from the original "godfather" of nootropics, piracetam, which was discovered in the 1960's. Since then, the racetam family has expanded exponentially.

Nootropics were officially identified as a new class of drugs in 1972 when they were described as compounds that share the same essential characteristics as piracetam. Later, the definition of what constitutes a nootropic was changed. No longer was the compound necessarily required to resemble piracetam.[1,73]

Some of the popular members of the racetam family include:[74]

It has been documented that phenylpiracetam has a broader range of application, and is more powerful overall, than piracetam.[75,76]

Racetam uses:

They have also been shown to exhibit positive effects in regards to memory and learning [77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84]

Noopept is an amino acid analogue that is very similar to piracetam, but is taken in far lower doses, and has shown to yield less side effects.

It increases the ability learn and remember information, and works by bettering your AMPA and NMDA Glutamatergic receptors, nerve growth factor (NGF), Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), and acetylcholine levels.

You can read more about it on our Noopept "mega-post" on the blog.

Bacopa monnieri is a perennial plant that has a rich history in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is categorized as an herb that "assists the mind, and enhances awareness," according to several sources.

In Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu medicinal system based on the idea of balance in bodily systems using herbs, diet, and yogic breathing, it is commonly known as Brahmi, is used to treat depression, insomnia, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.[8] Various studies support the cognitive enhancing effects demonstrated by Bacopa, especially memory and attention.[9,10,11]

Choline is an essential nutrient required for healthy brain function. It can be synthesized by the body in small amounts, and up until recently, scientists believed that the body could compensate for choline deficits through other nutrients.

It is now accepted that choline is essential and needs to be consumed through diet or supplementation.[12,13] A number of studies have also verified choline's cognitive benefits. [14,15]

DMAE, which is sometimes referred to as deanol, is a precursor to choline. It allows the brain to optimize the production of acetylcholine, a primary neurotransmitter involved in cognitive functions, such as learning and memory.[16,17,18] One study found DMAE useful in helping learning disabled children.[19] A handful of other studies on rodents have shown that it has beneficial effects on memory.[20,21]

Any nootropic effects derived from ginkgo biloba comes from the plant's leaves.

Much of the research surrounding the ginkgo biloba herb is based on a standardized extract derived from the ginkgo leaf.

Ginkgo biloba is one of the best selling herbal supplements is in Europe and the United States. Traditionally, it has been used to improve memory and treat blood disorders. These benefits have been confirmed, to some degree, in modern studies.[22]

Some scientific literature claims that ginkgo biloba may have the potential to enhance mental function in younger people.[23] There is even more evidence that it can provide some amount of relief to individuals suffering from Alzheimer's.[24,25,26]

Ginseng is a highly sought after and extremely expensive medicinal herb. The root is the part most commonly used. Ginseng must be cultivated for at least five years before being harvested. Because of this, top quality roots can sell for upwards of $10,000.

There are three different plants referred to as ginseng:

*Siberian ginseng is not actually related to ginseng at all, it is commonly known as eleuthero.

When panax ginseng is heat dried, it is considered red ginseng. When it is dried naturally, it is called white ginseng. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) both versions of panax have unique benefits.[27,28,29,30] American and panax ginseng are rich in a saponin called ginsenoside, which has been used effectively to protect against neuronal damage that impairs learning and memory.[31,32] A double blind, placebo-controlled study found that red panax ginseng was effective at improving cognitive function.[33]

Huperzine A is a potent compound that belongs to the same class of chemicals as caffeine and cocaine, known as alkaloids. It is sold over the counter as a brain booster because of its potential for enhancing mental function. Studies have suggested that it may improve memory, and it is commonly used to treat Alzheimer's disease and other similar conditions.[34,35,36]

Idebenone, a synthetic analogue of CoQ10, is a powerful antioxidant that may protect against nerve damage in the central nervous system (CNS). This compound has been studied for its neuroprotective properties and has been considered effective against age-related cognitive disorders.[37-41]

Inositol, unofficially known as vitamin B8, is a naturally occuring isomer of glucose. High concentrations of inositol are found in heart and brain tissue. It plays important roles in a number of regulatory mechanisms in the body, especially in relation to muscle and nerve tissue. It's also key to proper functioning of cell membranes.

Inositol is present in food in three forms:

Inositol is sometimes recommended for Alzheimer's disease, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), depression, and bipolar disorder.[42-45] Additionally, some studies on animals demonstrate possible memory related cognitive benefits.[46,47]

NADH is considered to be a vitamin B3 co-enzyme.[48] Research suggests that it might be effective at preserving, and even enhancing, cognitive function.[49] It also appears to play major roles in longevity and several age-associated diseases, including neurodegenerative disease.[50] Additionally, there is some evidence supporting its potentially protective effects against a broad range of cognitive disorders, including stroke and Alzheimer's disease.[51,52,53] Deficiency in NADH has been linked directly to the disease pellagra.[54] There is also some proof that it may be helpful in treating chronic fatigue syndrome.[55]

SNS Nutrition's Phenibut-XT promotes relaxation and is known for its nootropic effects.

Phenibut is classified as a neuropsychotropic drug that offers nootropic effects. In Russia, it is widely used to relieve tension, anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, stuttering, and fear. It has also been used to improve sleep in some patients.[57]

The nootropic effects of phenibut have further been backed by animal studies, especially in regards to memory and learning.[57,58]

Phosphatidylserine belongs to the class of chemical compounds known as phospholipids. It's an essential component in all cells, specifically, the cell membrane (the "skin" of the cell). Research suggests that phosphatidylserine may be helpful in treating declining mental function and depression in the elderly.[59-63]

Also known as nicotinoyl-GABA, or pikamilon, picamilon has been shown to restore GABA receptors in rat brains.[65]

Picamilon appears to have a high bioavailability, and it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.[66] One study on rats demonstrated potential benefits on short-term memory and learning.[67] It is speculated that some of the benefits attributed to picamilon might be linked with its ability to increase blood supply to the brain.[68]

PQQ, also known as methoxatin, was first recognized as an enzyme co-factor in methylotropic bacteria. There are some reported benefits from PQQ supplementation related to immune, antioxidant, and cognitive functions.[69] PQQ has also been shown to increase nerve growth factor and protect against neurodegeneration.[70-72]

Schisandra is a fruiting vine native to eastern Asia. The small red berries produced by this infamous medicinal herb contain a lignan called schizandrin.[85,86] which has been fairly well studied for its possible mental health benefits. It's speculated that schizandrin's cognitive-enhancing potential could be due to its powerful antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.[87-92]

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid that provides very promising neuroprotective effects. It has been regarded as a full-fledged nootropic because of its ability to improve both short and long-term memory, and increases alertness. It is suspected that vinpocetine acts as a cognitive enhancer through a number of mechanisms. One of the most prominent is its ability to enhance blood flow to the brain.[94-98] One study even described it as "Viagra for the brain."[95]

Adequate amounts of key vitamins and minerals are critical for supporting proper brain function, specifically cognition. Additionally, nutritional deficits may greatly impair mental performance.[99] Vitamin K, in particular, has been gaining attention for it's potential role in brain health and cognition.[100,101]

Fish oil is rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs). Scientific literature acknowledges the fact that EFAs play an important role in brain health. The body cannot produce essential fatty acids on its own, they must be consumed through diet and/or supplementation.[102,103]

Pro athletes are not permitted to use adrafinil.

Adrafinil is considered a "pro-drug" to modafinil, which is only available by prescription. In other words, adrafinil is metabolized (converted by the body) into modafinil.

Both of these compounds are metabolized into modafinilic acid. Adrafinil is relatively understudied, but because both convert into the same active component, studies done on modafinil are commonly cited for adrafinil.[3,4]

These studies provide evidence supporting the pro-cognitive effects of modafinil and describe it as a psychostimulant.[5] One study was able to demonstrate that modafinil, combined with cognitive training, greatly enhanced learning capability in healthy volunteers.[6] Another study established that modafinil has definite cognitive-enhancing properties in young, healthy individuals.[7] Despite being classified as a legal substance, in 2004, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned athletes from using adrafinil.[4]

There is a wealth of evidence demonstrating ALCAR's positive effects on brain function and cognition. Many of these benefits have been associated with its neuroprotective, antioxidant qualities and its ability to enhance the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).[104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110]

Some nootropics, when taken at doses higher than the tolerable upper intake level (UL), can cause minor side effects, such as diarrhea, headache, nausea, and digestive discomfort. Even when there is no UL, there's still a chance that you may experience adverse effects.

You should know that not all nootropics have been studied adequately in regards to their long term safety. In order to minimize the chances of experiencing side effects, you should always use supplements responsibly, making sure you read the label and use the product as instructed. Also, talk to your health care provider before starting any new type of supplementation or fitness regimen.

Many of the studies done regarding the efficacy of nootropics were done with specific clinical applications in mind. While some studies were conducted using healthy volunteers, a bulk of them were on subjects that were suffering with cognitive disorders of various types and degrees. This makes it unclear as to how nootropics might affect the general population.

Building your supplement regimen around a sound diet is of the utmost importance. Studies validate the impact that diet has on cognitive function.[124] Whole food sources should always be your go-to choice when available and substituting supplements for whole food is not advisable.

Top Nootropics 2018 (200% Increased Productivity)

We all know that evaluating nootropics is a very subjective task. But everyone desires and asks for objective answers. So, it was on me to find a solution thatll satisfymy high standardsandyour requirementsand wishes.

Here is how my usual review works:

Now, I tried several different approaches and most of them failed at the beginning. It was always the placebo effect that I was afraid it would harm my review process.

One day, I was playing a so-called dual-n-back game (its an advanced memory game) and I achieved great results. It was during a test period of one of my favorite nootropics. So I thought to myself what if I include playing the brain games in the review period? And so it started

From then on, I have increased the length of my review process to at least 2-4 weeks (with some exceptions). Based on my experience, this is long enough for me to evaluate the results of a certain nootropic stack and external factors that influence my everyday feeling.

What I look for during my test period?

In addition, I use the test period to play the dual-n-back game a couple of times and compare results (please understand that this game is so challenging that if you dont play it every couple of days, youll suck the next time).

When it comes to the dual-n-back game, I specifically observe:

Based on all results and answers I collected, I write a short summary and then compare it to other nootropics.

Luckily, I wrote a short handbook on the most popular nootropics (you candownload it here) so Im quite fast with analyzing the formulas of nootropic stacks.

And thats about it.Now you understand my process. Its nothing spectacular, its not a super-scientific,but it works and it delivers results.

Please keep in mind Im not a doctor, so there is no professional bias in my reviews. Im just a random guy who finds nootropics super exciting and loves testing them.

The only thing that matters at the end is that we all find a nootropic stack that delivers an outstanding performance AND it safe to take.

Luckily, all of those nootropics on my top nootropics of 2018 list deliver great results. Now its on you to decide which one you prefer the most!

Nootropics & Smart Drug Reviews

What are nootropics?

If you are looking for nootropic drugs and supplements, there are many suppliers around with a good reputation. You can find a great dealof information about nootropics and famous smart drugs, as well as enjoy nootropics reviews on our website. So what exactly are nootropics?

According to PubMed.gov, nootropics aresubstanceswhich improve the functional capabilities of the central nervous system including the brain. They also possess a host of other names such as cognitive enhancers, smart drugs, neuro enhancers, and intelligence enhancers among many more. Nootropics are drugs, supplements, nutraceuticals and functional foods that improve one or more aspects of mental functions such as motivation, attention and working memory. These drugs (nootropics) are legal and can be bought over the counter without necessarily requiring a doctors prescription.

Scientific data has come out strongly to prove that these drugs can be used to safely treat certain neuro conditions. We are talking about diseases such as Parkinsonism, Alzheimers, ADHD and Huntingtons disease.

There are so many nootropic substances in the market and otherwise. However, almost all of them contain the following major characteristics.

Yes of course nootropics supplements are different from smart drugs. These compounds basically affect the part of the brain which enjoins the left and the right hemispheres. This part of the brain is known as the corpus collosum in the scientific lexicon. Exclusively working on this area is what differentiates nootropics from other classes of smart drugs owing to the fact that they possess little to no effect on the central nervous system. This phenomenon causes the nootropics to be known to harmlessly work with and enhance brain activity while improving memory because they present essentially no side-effects and/or contraindications. Moreover, this is as a result of their low degree of toxicity in the body if administered within the typical range of dose.

Despite the fact that nootropics enhance the cognitive function of the brain, they are also known to improve attention span, memory, concentration and motivation. The different compounds that fall under the nootropics surname possess their own distinctive chemical and biological processes. If we may for instance take piracetam. This nootropic supplement has its powers in its ability to increase two types of glutamate receptors: AMPA and NDMA. It also works on cholinergic acetylcholine receptors. Piracetam is also known to cause vasodilation (widening) of the blood vessels which ultimately stimulates blood circulation in the central nervous system.

The cognitive enhancers, nootropics, exist in two states. There are those that are found naturally and some that are synthesized from the laboratory.

Natural brain enhancers include merchandises like Brain stack and Alpha Brain. They are naturally made from vitamins, natural herbs and minerals which include ingredients like Vitamin B6, Alpha GPC, Bacopa, Vinocetine, Huperzia Serrata, Amino acids ( L-Theanine and L-Tyrosine), AC11, among many others. If you are not exactly sure what these are do not be worried, you will get a lot of relevant information pertaining them in this site going forward.

Chemically based nootropical compounds refer to products like Racetams, Piracetam and Noopept. These are products produced by combination substances that have been scientifically synthesized in the laboratory. It must be noted that despite possessing a higher potency, chemically synthesized, as opposed to naturally occurring drugs, are always laden with contraindications. Therefore, you have to be extremely careful before taking any nootropic that belongs to this category. But take it easy, this is where this site comes in.

The most important point to note here is that irrespective of whether a nootropic is naturally or chemically synthesized, they do work in a similar way. All of them are meant to improve your brains neurotransmitters. The end result of this is increased focus, memory and enhanced learning ability.

Pure Nootropics Review – Are They Reliable?

Pure Nootropics is considerable a reliable and safe supplier because they used third party verification and testing from the outset of their founding in 2013. At that time, Pure Nootropics offered racetam capsules online, but they have since expanded into many other products including unique blends of their own.

As with any other vendor or supplier, we will apply rigor to determining whether you should feel safe buying from Pure Nootropics. Our conclusion is that this is one of the more reputable and trustworthy vendors and we outline many features below.

From the outset, Pure Nootropics has reliably provided information about their racetam products. Primarily, they sold piracetam, aniracetam, and oxiracetam at the start and these products are notorious for their dubious quality and manufacturing from China.

The company earned a positive reputation in Reddit, Longecity, and other communities because of their insistence on third party testing for these products.

Today, they have expanded their product line considerably and do not have third party testing on all products. Their racetams now have third party assay and heavy metals, but their Bacognize Bacopa monnieri and KSM-66 Ashwagandha do not.

One reason for this is that these proprietary blends of herbal extracts have their own built-in safety testing and rigorous analysis as governed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

NOTE: Just because a brand does not have third party testing does not mean they are not reliable. Some products require less scrutiny than others, but that is up to the discretion of the companies and the buyers.

If you decide to buy smart drugs from Pure Nootropics, there are plenty of anecdotal reports online. According to some, one glaring error on Pure Nootropics packaging had the incorrect dosage recommendations for piracetam. However, one moderator mentioned that despite the printing error, the website had updated information and third party testing on the subject.

In another instance, one batch of noopept sublingual solutions was incorrectly formulated, which resulted in a recall and refund for everyone affected. People who got the product recall noted This is exactly the type of response I like to see in this type of situation. I appreciate your honesty and will continue to do business with both companies.

One can safely recommend Pure Nootropics and their products to a wider audience. Mistakes will happen and a reliable supplier will rectify those mistakes quickly and safely.

Transhuman Space – Steve Jackson Games

Excerpts

Transhuman Space won the Grog d'Or for the best roleplaying game, game line, or RPG setting of 2002.

In the coming decades, technologies like genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology will transform humanity. A strange new world is unfolding nightmarish to some, utopian to others. Soon we'll have the power to reshape our children's genes, build machines that think, and upload our minds into computers.

And Earth no longer confines us. Space tourism, mining the Moon and asteroids, a settlement on Mars: all are dreams poised to take wing.

The universe of Transhuman Space is a synthesis of these two visions a world in which ultra-technology and space travel fuse to forge a new destiny for mankind. Neither utopia nor dystopia, it is a place of hopes, fears, and new frontiers.

In the year 2100, humanity is remaking itself using mature biotechnology and creating new kinds of living things. Transhuman Space gamers have the option to play genetically edited human upgrades, enhanced or specialized parahumans, or completely synthetic bioroids. Even if they don't decide to tamper with genetics, they'll encounter plenty of modified beings walking down the street or flying spaceships.

Transhuman Space: Bioroid Bazaar completes the job started in Transhuman Space: Changing Times of updating relevant game templates from earlier Transhuman Space supplements to GURPS Fourth Edition, this time covering the setting's genetic marvels and half-human monstrosities. It also gathers a couple of Fourth Edition templates from other supplements, and features a few new designs, including the disturbing Leonardo and Bngmyng bioroids and the tragic J7-S53 "upgrade." In all, Bioroid Bazaar delivers:

From the ocean depths to the Arctic wastes, and outward from there to the "Flying Dome" of Luna City and comet herder ships in the Outer System, biotechnology is changing what it means to be human or more (or less) than human. Come, see what's on the market in the Bioroid Bazaar!

Freedom in the 50 States 2017-2018: California Fiscal …

Ranking: Fiscal Freedom Analysis

California is one of the least free states in the country, largely because of its long-standing poor performance on economic freedom. Given this, it is likely no surprise that the Golden State is the most cronyist state in the union. It has long suffered from a wide disparity between its economic freedom and personal freedom ranking, but it is not as if the state is a top performer in the latter dimension. Indeed, it is quite mediocre on personal freedom.

Despite Proposition 13, California is one of the highest-taxed states in the country. Californias combined state and local tax collections were 10.8 percent of adjusted personal income. Moreover, because of the infamous Serrano decision on school funding, California is a fiscally centralized state. Local taxes are about average nationally, while state taxes are well above average. Government debt is high, at 20.9 percent of personal income. The states government employment is lower than the national average, at 11.2 percent of private employment.

Regulatory policy is even more of a problem for the state than fiscal policy. California is one of the worst states on land-use freedom. Some cities have rent control, new housing supply is tightly restricted in the coastal areas despite high demand, and eminent domain reform has been nugatory. The state even mandates speech protections in privately owned shopping malls. Labor law is anti-employment, with no right-to-work law, high minimum wages, strict workers compensation mandates, mandated short-term disability insurance, stricter-than-federal anti-discrimination law, and prohibitions on consensual noncompete agreements. Occupational licensing is extensive and strict, especially in construction trades. The state is tied for worst in nursing practice freedom. The states mandatory cancer labeling law (Proposition 65) has significant economic costs. California is one of the worst states for consumers freedom of choice in homeowners and automobile insurance. On the plus side, there is no certificate-of-need law for new hospitals, there have been some moves to deregulate cable and telecommunications, and the civil liability regime has improved gradually over the past 14 years.

California is a classic left-wing state on social issues. Gun rights are among the weakest in the country and have been weakened consistently over time. It was one of the first states to adopt a smoking ban on private property, but other states have since leap-frogged California in their restrictiveness, and tobacco taxes are actually a bit lower than average. California was an early leader on cannabis liberalization, fell behind in recent years, and has again become the top state for marijuana freedom with the 2016 passage of Proposition 64 legalizing the cultivation, sale, and possession of marijuana. Alcohol is not as strictly regulated as in most other states and booze taxes are relatively low. Physician-assisted suicide was legalized in 2015. Private school choice programs are nonexistent, and the state risks falling behind its neighbors Nevada and Arizona as an education entrepreneur. There is some public school choice, and homeschooling is moderately regulated. Incarceration and drug arrest rates used to be higher than average but have fallen over time, especially since 2010. The state is a leader in marriage freedom, adopting same-sex partnerships and then civil unions fairly early (although it gained same-sex marriage only recently).

Amazon River Ecosystem and Biodiversity | Discover Peru

The Amazon River is the greatest river of South America and its biodiversity the richest of any river in the world. Its waters are populated by 2,500 different species of fish, scientists believe that there are many more that have not been identified yet. Mammals, amphibians and water snakes also call the Amazon River home. The river has been a source of protein for the local population for thousands of years and a source of fresh water.

The Amazon River and its tributaries have depleted and eroded the land removing almost all its nutrients and leaving an extremely poor soil. How does the Amazon rainforest exist? It exists because of nutrient recycling. As plants die insects and microbes decompose them releasing nutrients that support new plants. Near water sources as plants absorb the energy from the sun vegetation becomes dense but trees do not grow very tall. Many animals that live in the Amazon River depend on the recycling of nutrients as they feed from plants and algae. This system of recycling has sustained life in the Amazon rainforest for millions of years.

Animal life support each other in the Amazon River by serving as food to other animals above the food chain. Their bodies carry nutrients that eventually serve as fertilizer, feeding the forest and the fauna of the Amazon River ecosystem.

Some species of animals are exclusively found in theAmazon River and many of them are in danger of extinction. For the last 20 years the governments of Peru and Brazil along with conservation organizations, local businesses and indigenous people have been working together to protect endangered species for the enjoyment of the world and future generations.

The following animals are unique to the Amazon river and its tributaries:

One of the most endangered species in the Amazon River is the pink dolphin or bufeo thought to be extinct more than twenty years ago. They are very rarely seen and are found only in the Amazonian rivers around Iquitos. Their pink color is due to blood capillaries near its skin and unlike other dolphins they have a hump instead of a fin and a long bottle nose snout instead of a short one. A distinctive characteristic of the pink dolphin is that they can turn their neck 180 degrees due to an unfused vertebra in its neck.

The average pink dolphin is 8.25ft to 9.75ft long (2.5 to 3 meters) and weights 200lbs (90 kilos). Males are usually larger and heavier. Their diet consists of fresh water fish, crustaceans and turtles. The pink dolphin is a solitary creature unlike their more social relative, the tucuxi.

Pink dolphin or bufeo

The giant river otter is considerably larger and heavier than other river otters at over six feet long and an average of 210 pounds. This species of river otters is very social and communicative, they are rarely found alone and communicate through high pitched screeches. They live in groups of five to ten and eat mostly fish.

The giant river otter is a highly endangered animal in the Amazon River, only 2,000 to 5,000 remain in protected areas in the Amazon basin. Its population once extended from Venezuela to Argentina but because of fur hunting and habitat destruction its numbers have dramatically decreased. These mammals can be seen at the Manu National Park and at the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.

One of the most recognizable Amazon River fish is the piranha. These are small fish with very sharp teeth which local indigenous people use as cutting tools. These small fish are an important part of the Amazon Rivers ecosystem as they eat weak or dead fish and dead animals that would otherwise pollute the waters of the Amazon River. The number of piranha species is estimated to be between 30 and 60. Only five of them pose danger to humans; the red bellied piranha or Pygocentrus nattereri, white piranha or Serrasalmus rhombeus, Serrasalmus Piraya, silver piranha or Serrasalmus Ternetzi and Serrasalmus Hollandi.

.

The Amazonian manatee is the largest mammal living in the Amazon River at over 1,000 pounds (454 kilos) and 9 feet (3 meters) long. They are found in the northern Amazon River Basin and its tributaries and are locally known as seacows. Their skin is thick, wrinkled and grey in color. The manatee is an herbivore so it depends heavily on vegetation near the rivers, over the years soil erosion from deforestation has been affecting its food supply making it scarcer. During the wet season the manatee can eat up to 110 pounds a day to build up reserves for the dry months.

For centuries the Amazonian manatee has been hunted by local Indians who consumed their meat and used their oil and fat. Demand for the animal expanded making it commercially profitable. Another factor affecting its population is accidentally getting caught in commercial fishing nets. They are classified as vulnerable in the endangered species list.

The tucuxi is locally known as bufeo gris or bufeo negro. Tucuxi, pronounced too-koo-shee is one of the two species of river dolphin that live in the Amazon River and its tributaries, the other one is the pink dolphin. The tucuxi looks like a bottlenose dolphin with dark gray to light gray coloration but much smaller in size. On average a tucuxi grows between three to five feet long and their weight range is between 95 to 120 pounds. Their diet consists mainly of fish.

The giant Amazon River turtle is also known as Charapa turtle, Arrau turtle, Tartaruga-da-amaznia, or Ara. An adult turtle can grow to more than 3.3 feet (1 meter) in length and they often weight up to 200 pounds, female turtles have a larger shell and are heavier than male turtles. This species of turtles do not leave the water, only females do to lay their eggs on the sandy beaches and immediately return to the water. Once the eggs hatch the hatchlings get the attention of predators, mostly birds, it is believed that only five percent make it to the river. Because of their low survival rate this species has been included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a conservation dependent species.

The arapaima is locally known as pirarucu or paiche and it is the largest freshwater scaled fish known to humans. It lives exclusively in the Amazon River and its tributaries and can reach a length of over nine feet long (almost 3 meters long) and weight over 440 lbs (200 kg). This species is a favorite among fishermen and have become a victim of overfishing. Because they come to the surface every five to fifteen minutes to breathe in air, they are easy to catch. Fishermen usually use harpoons and nets. Its meat is part of the culinary culture of the Amazon and is sought after for its taste. The arapaima is considered to be a living fossil that has not evolved for more than 20 million years and had no predators other than men.

According the BBC, errors in its classification has pushed the species closer to extinction. The latest taxonomic review was done over 160 years ago. Today they know that there are at least four species of arapaima. While some populations are increasing others are being overfished and driven to extinction.

.

The electric eel is an electric fish capable of generating electric shocks of up to 600 volts, five times the voltage generated by a U.S. household wall socket. This species live in the muddy waters of the Amazon River and its tributaries and it has a limited vision, therefore heavily relying on its electric field for hunting and self defense. Their bodies contain electrocytes, cells capable of storing power, and when threatened they will discharge electricity making them a feared predator.

The electric eel, despite its appearance, is not truly an eel (Anguilliformes) but a neotropical knifefish. It has a long, cylindrical, serpentine shaped body that grows to an average of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.5meters) long and weights 44 lbs (20 kilos). The electric eel can live up to 15 years and their diet consists mainly on fish, and in a smaller scale amphibians and birds.

The electric eel is not truly an eel but a neotropical knifefish.

.

Dwarf caimans are small crocodile reptiles and are distinguishable by the shape of their head. Their skulls are small and short and their upper jaws overlap the lower. The average length of a dwarf caiman is 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. Its body is covered in hard scales protecting them from predators. Their diet consists of fish and crustaceans. This species is not considered endangered.

The Amazonian dwarf caiman is also known as Cuviers dwarf caiman.

.

The green anaconda lives in the shallow waters of the Amazon. It is one of the largest species of snakes and the heaviest known to men. The anaconda can grow up to 30 feet (9 meters) long. Its color, green and brown, serves as camouflage in order to catch its prey. Anacondas are non-venomous constrictor snakes; they wrap around its victim and squeeze them to death. They eat small mammals, fish and rodents.

The green anaconda, a mighty constrictor.

.

More than three quarters of the Peruvian territory lies east of the Andes. The jungle or Selva has two parts, the high and the low Selva.

Mining and oil extraction are very controversial economic activities as they bring wealth and economic development but pollute the environment.

In terms of volume, the Amazon is the largest river in the world, it contains one fifth of the earths fresh water.

Between 1890 and 1920 the economy of the region suffer a boom due to the demand for its rubber.

Economic development is taking its toll among native Indians, many of them have fled deep inside the jungle, some have died of starvation and others have adapted to modern live.

Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance | Information for Patients …

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body's internal organs, known as the mesothelium.

There are three recognized types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for roughly 70% of cases, and occurs in the lining of the lung known as the pleura. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum and pericardial mesothelioma originates in the pericardium, which lines the heart.

An individual may be at risk to develop mesothelioma if he or she was exposed to asbestos in the workplace or at home. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and the inhalation of asbestos particles. In most cases, mesothelioma symptoms will not appear in an individual exposed to asbestos until many years after the exposure has occurred.

Those with a past asbestos exposure history experiencing symptoms should consult a physician with experience in accurately diagnosing mesothelioma. The earlier mesothelioma is diagnosed, the more likely it is to be caught at an early stage. At earlier stages of mesothelioma progression, more treatment options are available and oftentimes a better prognosis is given.

Additional mesothelioma information and statistics can be found in this section. Read stories of hope from mesothelioma surviviors as well.

In 2006, at the age of 36, Heather Von St. James gave birth to her daughter, Lily Rose. Just three months later, she was diagnosed with mesotheliomastartling news for someone so young. Heather had been exposed to asbestos second-hand as a child when her father would return home from work with his clothing covered in asbestos dust. Heather often wore his coat, and in the process she unwittingly breathed in the fibers. With strong faith, support from a host of family and friends, and a vibrant sense of humor, Heather emerged from a multi-month course of treatment healthy and cancer-free.

Mavis describes herself as an ordinary woman who married a shipwright. For 48 years, she washed her husbands clothes when he came home from work, never knowing that the dust on his jacket was full of deadly asbestos. In June 2009, Mavis was diagnosed with mesothelioma and given only three months to live. Chemotherapy worked to extend her life for another year beyond that, but eventually the tumors started growing again. However, she was given a new lease on life through an immunotherapy trial, which has kept her cancer free much longer than expected.

Paul Cowley

Paul Cowley and his wife Claire could hardly believe it when they got the news that he had pleural mesothelioma. He was only 34, much younger than most people diagnosed with this rare and deadly form of cancer. Being so young, Paul was able to attempt an aggressive multimodal treatment regimen that included multiple avenues of attack against the cancer. Paul has beaten the odds by surviving beyond five years a feat that only 9% of mesothelioma patients accomplish.

Paul Kraus

Paul Kraus has lived with peritoneal mesothelioma for nearly two decades. Born into a Nazi labor camp in Austria, he escaped as an infant with his mother and brother and soon emigrated with his family to Australia. Asbestos is prevalent in Australia, and as a result, the country suffers from some of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world. Mr. Kraus was exposed as a youth on a summer job he took in 1962. The cancer was latent until 1997 at which time he was diagnosed and given just weeks to live.

Stephen Jay Gould

One of the most popular scientific authors of recent times, evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould, authored more than 20 books on a variety of scientific subjects, and published hundreds of essays in Natural History magazine. Gould lived for twenty years after being diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1982. After his diagnosis, he wrote an essay, The Median Isnt the Message, about his reaction to the news and to the realization that half of all mesothelioma patients died within eight months of diagnosis. His essay has been cited as a source of comfort and hope by many cancer victims.

Once an individual has been diagnosed by a qualified mesothelioma doctor, the next step is to discuss mesothelioma treatment options and to develop a treatment plan. Recent scientific research has produced significant breakthroughs with regard to treatment protocols for mesothelioma patients and more options are now available for managing mesothelioma and supporting improved quality of life.

Newly diagnosed mesothelioma patients often have many questions for their doctors about the treatment options that would be most effective for them. Conventional treatment options for mesothelioma include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Recently, chemotherapy drugs including Alimta and Cisplatin have showed promising results in some patients.

Mesothelioma clinical trials as well as experimental treatments are other options that certain mesothelioma patients may be eligible to participate in. Our site features a comprehensive mesothelioma cancer treatment section that includes important information for patients and families. We've included resources on top mesothelioma experts such as Dr. Raphael Bueno, as well as a comprehensive list of cancer centers where mesothelioma treatment takes place.

Beyond the conventional treatments for mesothelioma, certain alternative therapies may provide assistance to mesothelioma patients. Financial assistance is available to help offset mesothelioma treatment costs. We continually update this section of our site as new mesothelioma treatment information becomes available.

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma cancer. Inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers may cause an inflammation of internal tissue and disrupt organ function which leads to the development of mesothelioma. Asbestos products were used extensively in the 20th century throughout the United States, in a wide variety of applications.

Asbestos companies continued to produce these products even after they were known to be hazardous to workers. These products were responsible for asbestos exposure sustained by the individuals who manufactured them as well as those who used them. Renovation and construction both at home and in schools also poses high risk areas for exposure. People also may have been exposed to asbestos-contaminated talc in baby powder

Many workers were put at risk at commercial and industrial locations including refineries, power plants, steel mills, auto production facilities and large construction sites. Some of the occupations of workers at risk include electricians, plumbers, boilermakers, carpenters, mechanics, machinists and more. Additionally, if you lived with someone who was regularly exposed to asbestos and washed their clothes, you could be at risk for second hand asbestos exposure.

Although rare, mesothelioma affects veterans from all branches of service: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. As mesothelioma has a long latency period and can remain dormant for several decades, veterans who served our country from 1930 through 1980 are just now being diagnosed with the disease.

Navy veterans who worked in navy shipyards and or served on our nation's aircraft carriers, battleships, destroyers, submarines and warship from WWII through the Vietnam War were exposed to high concentrations of deadly asbestos and are at a high risk for developing asbestos-related cancer. Boiler rooms, engine rooms, sleeping quarters, and other areas of naval vessels were the most common areas where asbestos was present.

Some prominent shipyards where asbestos was prevalent include Brooklyn Navy Yard, Norfolk Navy Shipyard, Long Beach Naval Shipyard and Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Financial assistance and help with VA Benefits is available to veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Asbestos manufacturers and distributors made a concerted effort to hide the dangers of asbestos from the public, while at the same time profiting heavily from the sale and manufacture of harmful asbestos products. Those suffering from Mesothelioma can seek compensation from the manufacturers of asbestos and asbestos-containing products by hiring a competent mesothelioma lawyer.

When deciding whether or not you should pursue your legal rights, you should think about the following three things. First, asbestos manufacturers had knowledge of the dangers of asbestos and knowingly put hardworking men and women at risk. Second, treatment for mesothelioma can be very expensive. Third, by exercising your legal rights, you can protect your loved ones in the future.

Ask a question and Jennifer will respond to you promptly.

Once you make the decision to pursue your rights, a competent asbestos attorney will maximize recovery from both viable and bankrupt asbestos defendants. Over 65 asbestos trusts have been established holding billions of dollars combined across them. These asbestos trust funds have been set aside to help compensate those workers who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer or other asbestos-related diseases.

The legal process to compensate mesothelioma victims is not overly burdensome and should be strongly considered to help offset treatment costs and to provide financial security for loved ones.
