Are You Ready for the Full Automation Era? – Seed World

Kumar joined Oliver as a design and manufacturing engineer in August 2006 with a degree in industrial and manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering. He is an integral part of Olivers engineering, manufacturing and research and development teams to ensure the company is always moving forward.

NASA chief scientistJim Green recently said that he doesnt think the world is ready to find life on another planet. NASAs Mars 2020 rover is set to launch next summer and will be the first to collect samples of material from the Red Planet to send back to Earth for testing.

It will be revolutionary, Green told theTelegraph. It will start a whole new line of thinking. I dont think were prepared for the results. Were not.

Greens comments made me think of the topic of automation. What most people in the seed industry do is use semi-automated machinery. You can control the machine to start and stop, auto clean-out between varieties, open and close gates, etc., but there needs to be a human controlling those functions.

The next level of automation is a totally self-adjusting machine. These machines will be capable of performing virtually all the tasks that humans now perform.

Seed processing plants still require human beings to be stationed in the plant to perform various tasks along the processing line. Truly automated machines wont require this. Seed plants that are completely automated will have one or two people stationed in a main control room while the machines literally do all the work themselves.

No one will need to go down to the floor to adjust between seed lots. The machines will conduct virtually all the tasks now performed by humans. It will be a different world, and just like with life on Mars, we are not yet 100% ready for it.

Not just one part of a seed plant can be fully automated every part of the plant has to be, and it will take several more years for the industry get there. When we do, our businesses will never be the same but like with any new technology, we will wonder how we ever did it any other way.

What Is Intelligent Automation And How It Can Help You Innovate Better – Forbes

Would you like to hear the best news ever? Nothing is perfect. Every system, process, interaction, mechanical apparatus, or digital flow, have frictions. These imperfections provide innovators, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking for new business growth with an opportunity to step to the plate and come up with a solution that generates value and revenues.

To do so, you will need to have the ability to identify these frictions. The framework I describe below will enable you to unlock new opportunities and solve frictions with the power of AI and IoT.

Frictions, problmes, broken links, are all a great opportunity for innovators

To identify imperfections and frictions in behaviors, processes, and other activity flows, let's start by drawing up the complete customer journey, supply chain, or process describing the flow of events from start to finish. The imperfections, frictions, and problems we seek to solve are hiding within this flow. This approach of detailing the entire process has been around for quite a while, and it is still around because it is a robust ideation tool that delivers reliable results.

Here is an Example Of How This Tool Works: imagine an everyday process, such as getting prepared for a conference call. First, the person has to find her laptop, phone, and Bluetooth earpiece. Next, the search for an available conference room commences. Once she found an available room, she needs to connect to the office VPN and network. Following that, she will find the invite in her calendar and log on to the office phone conferencing app using a provided link. She may also need to connect her laptop to a projector or a screen in the conference room to share her slides with other participants. There will be a bit of fiddling with the air conditioner and lights, adjusting the shades, complaining about why those using the room earlier in the day left their coffee cups, and the call can commence.

If you were to think of your own experiences, or better yet, interview others about their experiences preparing for a conference call, all of the flows in the process would surface:

These are just a few exemplary frictions that following the flow of events will help us identify. The more detailed the process, the more frictions we will find. With more frictions, the more opportunities we will have to innovate and generate business value by solving these frictions and streamlining the process.

The same process works for supply chains or manufacturing processes. Describe the entire process end to end, speak with people, and capture their experiences. By doing so, you will find all of the gaps, frictions, broken links, and generally, what does not work well.

This type of approach is known as a "User-Centric" approach. We view the world and its problems through the keyhole of human experiences.

With this approach, we are not viewing the issue of connectivity to the office WIFI as a problem the laptop is experiencing. It is a problem the person experiences. A lost headset is not the fault of the Bluetooth earpiece, and we do not expect it should proactively help us locate it.

To solve frictions from a "Human Centric" approach, we will ask ourselves, "how might we solve this friction for a person" and not "how might we solve this problem for a device."

We will come up with solutions providing users with better access, streamlining processes, providing users with better access to knowledge, or enabling users to self-serve themselves.

As a result, our solutions are providing additional tools for the human user, such as an app to book rooms or a "Tile" style BLT tag to find lost items. Solutions will be found, but they will operate by relying on the active collaboration of the human user.

The beauty of IoT and AI is the new ability to make behaviors, processes and entire environments ... [+] Inteligent and Automated

Today, with the advances of IoT and AI, we are presented with the opportunity to go through the same friction exploration process described above, but, to come up with a different set of solutions to the frictions we identify. This process is not intended to replace the excellent and proven tool of finding human-related frictions, but it is a new framework, we should add to our innovation toolbox.

The combination of IoT and AI creates a new and powerful capability:

These capabilities are called"Intelligent Automation"and are the big story of the next decade of digital innovation. If previously, when looking at processes and finding frictions, we asked ourselves "how might we solve problem X forpersonY," with Intelligent Automation we can ask ourselves "how might we automate a process and make it inteligent?". By the nature of these questions, it becomes apparent that the solutions we will come up with will expand beyond the human user. We will be able to create Intelligent and Automated experiences and processes. To make processes Inteligent and Automated we need data: data that is generated by physical assets and IoT, and data which has already been digitized and exists in databases, CRM systems and other digital media.

Using Intelligent Automation, we can learn what is the best flow, predict the next steps, and take automated actions. We are moving responsibilities from the human user to machines by leveraging the power of Intelligent Automation. (more on this topic in this post )

But how do we find opportunities for driving these actions? Let's go back to our chart on the wall, which describes a customer journey, flow, or process.

We need to add two new rows below the flow we described.

In the phone conferencing example, physical assets include the phone, earpiece, office, laptop, and the Wifi router. Data can include the location of the user, her laptop, phone and bluetooth device, meeting room ocupancy and the temperature in the room.

Looking at the phone conference example, when we consider Intelligent Automation, we can come up with new types of innovative ideas based on the capabilities of IoT and AI:

The end result: process flow at the top, followed by frictions, available physical assets and data ... [+] per each step in teh process

This approach will begin to float opportunities that will expand your portfolio of ideas by adding Inteligence and Automation to processess. It will help you grow your concept portfolio from ideas that focus on streamlining the activity flow of human users to concepts that focus on how Intelligence and Automation can improve the processes.

To make sure your concepts match what technology has to offer today, read my post on how to get the most out of tech, righ now

Greece Needs New Technologies, Training to Address Automation – GTP Headlines

Home > Surveys, Trends & Stats > Greece Needs New Technologies, Training to Address Automation

Greece can only move into robust growth if it begins to invest in new technologies and training, balancing in this way the possibility of automation driving out a large part of the working force due to lack of skills, according to the latest bulletin released by the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV).

Citing a recent McKinsey report, SEV is ringing alarm bells noting that new technologies, automation and robotics will potentially eliminate one in two jobs. In order to address this threat, SEV suggests transferring the workforce to other productive activities by training employees in new skills.

According to SEV, the estimated loss of working positions resulting from the implementation of new technologies in Greece, is set at 331,000 jobs (from the current 689,000) in trade, 240,000 (from 470,000) in agriculture, 236,000 (from 358,000) in processing, 210,000 (from 362,000) in tourism, 158,000 (from 337,000) in public administration, 122,000 (from 185,000) in transportation and storage.

All of the employees impacted will have to be re-trained in order to be able to use new technologies, which must be introduced without delay, SEV notes.

To demonstrate the point, SEV refers to investments in manufacturing, which it says are still not paving the way for adaptation to new technologies or to the so-called e Fourth Industrial Revolution.

More specifically, only 6.3 percent of employees in Greece, aged 18-64 (compared to 14.8 percent in the EU) participate in education and training programs, with 5.5 percent in trade and 3.5 percent in manufacturing against 13.3 percent and 9.5 percent, respectively in the EU.

In the meantime, companies implementing continuing vocational training programs see only 18 percent of their staff participating in these (compared to 37 percent in the EU) leaving a large part of the work force unprepared for new technologies, which will soon include AI and robotics.

SEV analysts underline that the development of new products and services for the application of new technologies will create the need for labor as long as employees gain the necessary skills ahead of their implementation.

To address the challenge, SEV proposes incentives for investments focused on innovation, research and development (R&D), as well as public-private partnerships which will design and implement a national strategy for the adaptation of the economy to new technologies with specialized platforms for cooperation, skills development programs, development of digital innovation hubs.

SEV will present its complete set of recommendations at the Industry 4.0: Growth Opportunity Greece Should Not Miss conference during December 18-19 at the Hilton Athens.

Toxic Positivity is a Thing and It Needs to Stop – Thrive Global

In a world overloadedwith inspirational quotes, daily affirmations, and endless positivity, sometimes it can seem wrong to feel anything less than cheerful. Buy intothis relentless flow of messages promoting happiness and feeling good above allelse, and we end up in a kind of spiritually anemic wasteland a type of toxicpositivity that would have us believe that emotions can fall into only one oftwo categories bad or good. And, if we fail at feeling only the good ones, then we are somehow inadequate and miss out on creating an engaged andpurposeful life. Sigh.

Heres theproblem with this over-simplified view of our interior lives:

The things that bring true meaning and purpose to our lives areoften the same things that invite the whole array of emotions into ourconsciousness, even the supposedly negative ones.

Forexample, think of a long-term intimate relationship, or when a person becomes aparent. These are complex life experiences that require us to be vulnerable, tostep into the unknown, and brave the full array of our emotional responses. Its totally unrealistic to assume we could orient to these types ofcircumstances with the goal of only feeling the good vibes.

Having such an expectation sets us up to miss some of the most enriching opportunities for growth and connection. How can we teach our children about emotional resiliency if we are demanding they embrace a false positivity instead of learning to deal with the world the way it is? How can we model self-acceptance and self-compassion if we are effectively denying huge parts of ourselves and deeming them unacceptable simply because those parts are less than comfortable to feel?

The rigid approach of positivity and nothing else is indeedtoxic. It stands in direct contradiction to a path of conscious evolution, onein which we welcome in the moments of vulnerability and see them asopportunities to acknowledge and feel all of our feelings. This is how we gainwisdom in life and access to deeper layers of our own potential by allowingourselves to be present to full spectrum of our experiences and emotions.

So whatsthe antidote to this epidemic of toxic positivity? In a word, itsauthenticity.

Unlike the counterfeit form of enlightenment promised to us with toxic positivity, authenticity promotes a deep and potent inner-knowing, and allows us to show up in the world from a place of embodied presence no matter what emotions we are experiencing. But how exactly do we do that?

1.To be authentic, we must start with awareness.

We need to be willing to show up, stay curious, and make ourselves completely available to the present moment. When we do that, we are setting the stage to stay open to possibility and invoke the power of beginners mind. We refuse to make assumptions, including the assumption that certain emotions are better than others. Only then do we become truly available to listen to and receive from the experiences life is offering us.

2. With awareness intact, the next step towards authenticity is to clarify and connect with our values.

This is an essential step for making life more meaningful. When we know our values, what we want to be a stand for in this world, we can have a different orientation to our feelings. They are no longer good or bad. Instead, they are opportunities to learn more about what truly matters to us.

We tend to have the strongest emotional reactions to things that are important to us. For example, if we feel big grief about the millions of children living in poverty in our world, perhaps that is an indicator to us that we might deeply value being of service to others less fortunate than us. And as such, we can start to choose actions that align with that, which leads us to the next step.

3. Once we are clear on our values, then we can choose to act in accordance with those values to create a purpose driven-life.

Life no longer is about seeking out perpetual happiness. Instead, we choose to connect and prioritize those things that will move us further in the direction of what matters most to us.

When we have a clear connection to our inner purpose like this, we develop a much greater tolerance for the full spectrum of feelings. We dont fear the difficult emotions any longer. Instead, we understand that each feeling we have is part of a larger process of self-discovery and self-creation. And with our values at the forefront of our mind, we feel motivated to create a life filled with meaning and passion. But the practice of authenticity doesnt stop there.

4. To fully own our deepest truth and leave the cult of toxic positivity behind us, we must also embrace the ambiguity that inevitably comes with choosing authenticity.

As they say, the only thing certain in life is change. When we stop wasting energy trying to be in control of everything (including our emotions), we enter a more truthful relationship of co-creation with the universe. We allow ourselves to be changed by the journey as it unfolds.

This is where our true power lies not in cultivatingsome artificial sense of positivity but in genuinely showing up in the here andnow, clear on our values, ready to act, and willing to be changed. This isthe ground from which a life of real meaning and purpose can blossom andflourish and incidentally its also the place from which we truly can experience authentic happinessand fulfillment.

Women Are Pretending To Be Men On Instagram To Avoid Sexist Censorship – HuffPost

Female pole dancers, fitness instructors and sex workers who use Instagram have started changing their gender to male on the app. The widespread deception is in response to a sexist policy the tech giant introduced earlier this year.

In April, Instagram began hiding photos and videos that it considers to be vaguely inappropriate without explaining what specific kind of content that includes or alerting affected users. Such posts are algorithmically blocked from being featured in the Facebook-owned websites public Explore and hashtag pages, which help grow peoples accounts by giving them broader exposure.

This kind of covert censorship, known as shadow banning, has disproportionately affected women and members of marginalized communities, including those whose livelihoods depend on Instagram leaving many urgently seeking ways to restore their visibility on the platform.

Many of us within the pole dancing community rely on Instagram to thrive, said Michelle, an Australian pole dance performer, teacher and studio owner who, like other women quoted in this story, asked to be identified by her first name only for privacy reasons. We use [Instagram] to share training videos, connect with new people and, for lots of us, to grow our businesses.

In late October, having already watched her contents engagement steadily decline for months, Michelle decided to change her profile to male. Shed seen research suggesting Instagrams algorithm is biased against women, and felt like she had nothing to lose.

Within three days of switching, she said, things went back to normal: Through Instagrams analytics tool, she found that her posts have been getting far more likes and views, indicating that Instagram has been displaying them to a wider audience again.

Its ridiculous that we have to resort to trying this kind of thing, she said.

Instagram/everybodyvisible

Though strictly experimental, the gender-swapping tactic has started to take off among shadow-banned women due to recent promotion from anti-censorship activism pages such as @everybodyvisible. Like Michelle, several other women have reported positive changes to their contents performance since pretending to be men a change many have made reluctantly.

Its really upsetting and ridiculous that women are having to change their gender [on Instagram] to avoid being censored, said Carolina, a founding member of @everybodyvisible who researches online content moderation as part of her doctoral studies in London.

The supportive community I found through Instagram is what gives me and so many others confidence, added Carolina, who is also a pole dancer. But now, with Instagram choosing whos appropriate and whos not, its hard to feel welcome there.

In a statement to HuffPost, a Facebook spokesperson denied that Instagram is biased against women.

Gender information from profiles has no impact on content we filter from hashtags or the Explore page, the spokesperson said. We want to make sure the content we recommend to people on Instagram is safe and appropriate for everyone. Ensuring women feel heard is an essential part of that effort.

But the platform has previously admitted to restricting content from pole dancers in particular.

Over the summer, pole dancers around the world noticed that posts containing popular hashtags such as #PoleFitness, #PoleTrick and #FemaleFitness (but notably, not #MaleFitness) seemed to be shadow banned on Instagram. At first, Instagram reportedly denied that this was happening, but after a petition addressing the matter went viral, the company acknowledged that it had in fact been hiding pole dancers content and apologized for doing so.

Instagram/eizabeth_bfit

Instagram users attempting to play by the rules and simply understand what theyre allowed to post on the platform without being shadow banned wont find many answers so perhaps its not surprising that theyre are trying to game the system.

Unlike Instagrams policy for posts containing nudity that are subject to removal which include depictions of sexual intercourse, genitals, close-ups of fully-nude buttocks and female nipples the platforms policy for borderline content that is subject to demotion is nebulous and obscurely worded. Instagram has refused to define what it means by inappropriate imagery; the sole example included in its guidelines is sexually suggestive material.

The only public indication of what Instagram might consider to be sexually suggestive is tucked into its parent companys advertising policy pages, which prohibit adult content but go into greater detail about what that covers. There, Facebook features several photos to illustrate to advertisers what it means by the terms sexually suggestive, sexually provocative, implied nudity and sexual in nature.

FacebookFacebook's ad policies may offer some insight into what Instagram considers to be "sexually suggestive" content.

Nearly all of the photos feature women, including one model whos leaning forward in a low-cut shirt and another whos eating a banana.

Instagram also offers a bit more detail when rejecting advertisers. Upon turning down an ad from Michelles company featuring pole dancing students in shorts and crop tops, it sent her a notification explaining the ad was unacceptable because it showed excessive skin despite the fact that the sport requires skin-on-pole contact for grip.

That Instagram has the power to arbitrarily decide whose content can be visible on its massive platform should be concerning to everyone not just the women who are currently being shadow banned, said Carolina from @everybodyvisible.

Social media giants including Instagram have a monopoly over our data and online interactions, she said. Freedom of expression is at stake here. Users really do not have a voice we have to cope with their policies, and unfortunately for us, everything that even slightly involves sex scares the shit out of Instagram.

Sex workers who spoke to HuffPost described a crackdown on their Instagram posts following the passage of FOSTA-SESTA in 2018. The law makes it illegal to assist, facilitate or support sex trafficking, and removes platforms immunity from liability under the Communications Decency Act for user content that does any of those things. In its wake, big tech has made sweeping changes to how it polices sexual content including changes to algorithms.

Last November, months after FOSTA-SESTA had been signed into law, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that his companys artificial intelligence systems proactively flag 96% of posts containing nudity that get removed. He was applauding the systems efficiency, but experts have concerns about over-reliance on algorithms for content moderation due to the human bias thats often coded into them.

Earlier this year, feminist publication Salty crowd-sourced data from Instagram users to understand how different groups are policed on the platform. Among Saltys findings, which represent some of the limited research into this issue, the data suggested that Instagram is more likely to reject ads from women than men.

The patriarchy is written into the algorithms, a Salty spokesperson said. Instagram needs to be actively working to see and hear [women and marginalized groups]. ... Unless theyre inviting us to have a seat at the table, then were going to be written out of the code.

REAL LIFE. REAL NEWS. REAL VOICES.

Help us tell more of the stories that matter from voices that too often remain unheard.

When a comedian is pro-censorship, I start finding them funny – The Spectator USA

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, made a keynote speech today at ADLs 2019 Never is Now summit, in which he viciously chided the Silicon Valley tech giants for their irresponsible approach to censorship (or rather the lack of it thereof) on their terrifyingly influential social media platforms.

Cohen was at the summit to receive the ADL International Leadership Award, and began by making it clear that throughout his career, the aim of his comedy has been to uncover the insidiously passive acceptance of racism and bigotry that lurks within our society. I have to confess that up until now, I had found his characters Borat and Ali G completely unacceptable because they fall into the socially problematic category of cultural appropriation, but now I know that Cohen is woke as fuck, I shall endeavor to watch his work and make damn well sure I laugh my socks off.

During his 25-minute long speech, Cohen told his enthusiastic audience that he found Mark Zuckerbergs excuse of defending of free expression when refusing to censor his platform utter nonsense. Finally, a mainstream comedian who understands that social media must be regulated. Many people, or as I like to call them bigots, argue that the internet is the primary form of communication for many people these days and that to censor it would be morally wrong. Like a doll with a pull-string, Mark Zuckerberg often spouts shallow platitudes in defense of his multi-billion dollar corporation like: giving more people a voice, and: bringing people together. Incredibly naive and perhaps even sinister phrases considering that a lot of people out there harbor fascistic tendencies and should not be allowed a voice.

Well, on that matter Sacha Baron Cohen had this to say:

The First Amendment says that Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech, however, this does not apply to private businesses like Facebook.

Haha! Take THAT, Nazis! Thanks to a loophole in the Bill or Rights due to James Madisons careless disregard of social media platforms when it was written in 1787, we totally CAN regulate and censor Facebook and Twitter.

After watching Cohens speech I watched a couple of his movies and instead of sitting there with my arms folded, getting ready to jab the off button on my remote the moment anything remotely offensive occurred, I found myself actually enjoying them. Knowing that the man who made them shares my views on free speech and how dangerous it is gave me a new found appreciation of his work. I cannot say that I found his films particularly amusing because humor tends to be something that happens to other people. I did however find myself chuckling at the delicious absurdity of a man who recently called for censorship now appearing on my television screen as a Kazakh journalist encouraging his audience to laugh at the idea that people in Kazakhstan have sex their sisters.

Watching Cohen mercilessly stereotype a character from a little-known country with the knowledge that his entire reason for portraying his most well-known character in this way was to draw attention to the fact that people often stereotype people from little-known countries completely blew my mind. This is Inception-level satire, and his dedication to keeping up this ruse for the best part of two decades has to be admired.

Anyway, now that the man who played Borat has endorsed online regulation and censorship, hopefully more people will get on board with this idea and maybe one day, hate speech on the internet will be a thing of the past. I have to say, his throw the Jew down the well song was delightfully entertaining, Ive been humming it to myself all day!

Cancelation of ‘The Foreigner’ at WC leads to claims of censorship – The Star Democrat

CHESTERTOWN In the time since Washington College canceled two performances of a students Senior Capstone Experience production of The Foreigner, social media has been wrought with concerns of censorship by Washington College.

In an effort to address these concerns, the college hosted a virtual meeting through the platform, Zoom, Wednesday, Nov. 20. According to an email sent Friday, Nov. 15, to those on a college mailing list, the meeting was to be attended by college President Kurt Landgraf, Associate Professor of Theater Brendon Fox and Susie Chase, vice president of advancement, alumni affairs and constituent engagement.

The college community was notified of the plays cancellation through an email sent on behalf of Provost and Dean of the College Patrice DiQuinzio at 12:54 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8.

According to that email, the cancellation stemmed from voices in our community who were deeply wounded by certain representations in the play.

The Foreigner, a two-act comedy written by Larry Shue and first performed in 1983, was approved by the colleges Department of Theatre and Dance to serve as the studentsSenior Capstone Experience some time ago, Wendy Clarke, director of college communications, wrote in an email Nov. 19. Performances were scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9.

Clarke wrote the decision to cancel the play was influenced by a combination of factors including some students reaction to the play.

The play includes characters who are members of the Ku Klux Klan and appear on stage in white hoods and robes. Although these characters are very clearly the villains of the story and are vanquished by the plays other characters, their presence within the play was deeply upsetting to some, the email from DiQuinzios office reads notifying the WC community of the plays cancelation.

Clarke wrote that two days before dress rehearsals, Laura Eckelman, associate professor of theater and interim chairman of the theater department, notified the colleges public safety office and counseling services, as well as Sarah Feyerherm, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, in an email that the play included content that could potentially upset some members of the campus community.

Clarke wrote the plays use of KKK robes, fake guns as props and the use of racial and gender slurs led Eckelman to notify DiQuinzio about a possible content warning for the play.

Feyerherm then sent Eckelmans email to staff members who work with student groups on campus Clarke named the Office of Intercultural Affairs which called a meeting Thursday, Nov. 7, to discuss how to ensure that all members of the campus community could be considered.

Clarke wrote that Feyerherm, staff members, Eckelman and Fox were present at that meeting.

With not enough time during the morning meeting to resolve all of the concerns, it was decided to hold an additional meeting and include some of the student voices, Clarke wrote.

That meeting was held the day of a dress rehearsal and included students, staff members who are advisors to minority group on campus, DiQuinzio, Clarke, Feyerherm and Eckelman.

Clarke wrote that the students who attended the meeting were extremely distressed and expressed extreme frustration and hurt that they hadnt been told about the play much earlier, or had been given the opportunity to let their feelings be known until this late in the process.

In an article for the student newspaper The Elm, News Editor Cassy Sottile reported Eckelman said she did not see the plays cancellation as an act of censorship. She called it a course correction made by and with the theatre department.

As an artist and an educator, I believe fervently in the value of theatre as an engine for empathy, a tool for social change, and a vehicle for encouraging difficult conversations, Eckelman said in Sottiles report. But I also feel a personal, social and professional responsibility to treat my neighbors with as much care, respect and compassion as I possibly can.

Clarke wrote that, at this time, Eckelman apologized on behalf of the department for not fully considering the plays potential ramifications and for not seeking student input sooner. Eckelman decided to allow a closed showing for department faculty, so that the students senior thesis could be graded.

(The department) could have done a better job at including constituencies on campus to understand the content of the play and converse about it, Landgraf said in Sottiles report.

Clarke wrote that the decision to cancel the play was not pushed by the college administration over the will of the department of theater and dance, but was made by Eckelman with DiQuinzio and Feryerherm's support.

A post-show discussion panel was intended to be held after the Nov. 8 performance to address the appearance of the KKK members on stage, The Elm report reads.

To address the resulting concerns of censorship for college alumni, an email was sent out from Landgrafs office on Monday, Nov. 11.

According to that email, the play centers on a group of people who feel othered by society in various ways, including premarital pregnancy, neurological differences and age. Through the course of the play, these characters build a community. That safe space is threatened by xenophobic anger and self-proclaimed entitlement of two other characters.

In the climax of the play, the community of disenfranchised protagonists rises up to easily defeat the bigoted antagonists (who reveal themselves as members of the KKK). It is through the portrayal and defeat of these villainous characters that the play conveys its message about the evils of xenophobia, the dangers of othering, and the importance of empathy, the email reads.

According to Landgrafs email, the colleges intent was to prevent further harm to members of our community who already feel marginalized.

However, on social media platforms such as Facebook, college alumni called this act censorship.

Landgrafs email acknowledged those reactions saying censorship is anathema to the core values of Washington College, and this was never our intent.

His email said the college is working to find a way to present the play that enables the campus community to have a productive, thoughtful conversation.

We will work with all of the relevant student groups, staff, faculty, alumni and Board of Visitors and Governors to determine the best way to accomplish this and to find the most constructive path forward, the email states.

Additionally, The Elm reports that Landgraf and Feyerherm attended a Student Government Association senate session on Nov. 12. Landgraf also attended a dinner with SGA officers.

This is not the first time the performances of the play have been met with controversy. According to an article by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader from March 5, Sioux Falls (S.D.) School Districts production of The Foreigner was found to culturally insensitive, the article reads.

According to Clarkes email from Nov. 19, staff at the college are looking into staging a production of The Foreigner in the spring, but what form this will take has not been decided yet.

Cancelation of 'The Foreigner' at WC leads to claims of censorship - The Star Democrat

Democrats are not "censoring" Donald Trump his increasingly desperate staff is doing that – Salon

On Friday, Donald Trump, with his usual sociopathic levels of impulsiveness, thought it wise to commit another likely impeachable offense in the middle of a hearing in the ongoing impeachment inquiry. As former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified to Trump's bizarre, unethical and abusive behavior, he took to Twitter to lambast her in real time, claiming that everywhere she had been posted "turned bad" and personally blaming her for the civil war in Somalia, which is the epitome of a baseless accusation. House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff, D-Calif., called the act "witness intimidation".

When asked about it by reporters later that day, during a press conference that was ostensibly about health care pricing, Trump, as is his habit, declared that he's the real victim.

"You know what? I have the right to speak," Trump said, in response to a question that was, by being a question, an invitation to speak.

"I have freedom of speech just as other people do, but theyve taken away the Republicans rights," he continued, as exactly zero people tried to turn off his microphones or shut him up in any other way.

Trump knows his followers love these victim trips so much that they'll simply ignore the fact that Democrats couldn't shut him up if they wanted to. In reality, Democrats don't want to shut Trump up at all. If anything, the opposite is true. Democrats clearly want Trump to keep that motormouth running and those rage-fingers tweeting: The more Trump uses that freedom of speech, the stronger their case for impeachment gets.

"Trump could come right before the committee and talk, speak all the truth that he wants if he wants," Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told Margaret Brennan of "Face the Nation" in an interview that aired Sunday. The speaker also defined what the word "exculpatory" means for Trump, safely guessing it's not a word he has much experience with.

"He should come to the committee and testify under oath and he should allow all those around him to come to the committee and testify under oath," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumersaid at a news conference on Sunday, adding that Trump's failure to appear and his insistence that his staff also refuse to testify suggests that he is "afraid" and "hiding."

Indeed, the only people who appear interested in silencing the president are his own staff members. As Axios reported Sunday, "President Trump's public schedule next week is designed to keep him distracted from the televised hearings and to counterprogram Week 2 of those hearings."

Considering that the events on his schedule a Cabinet meeting, a visit to a factory in Texas, an arts awards ceremony are humdrum presidential activities that would barely make the news even in boring times, it's safe to say that the White House staff doesn't really see any of this stuff as "counterprogramming" that will actually distract anybody's attention from the impeachment hearings.

Except for maybe one person's attention. The obvious purpose is to keep Trump busy so he doesn't get into trouble, a management style familiar to any parent of toddlers. Frankly, it's a smart move, as Trump's behavior last Friday showed. Even on Fox Business, which has been fiercely pro-Trump, a host cracked and saidthat his Twitter behavior "makes him look like a big dumb baby" and draws more attention to the hearings than if he could just sit still with his coloring book like a big boy.

Odds that White House staff can use Trump's busy schedule to keep him off the internet completely, however, aren't looking good. Even though tweeting invective at Yovanovitch backfired on Trump Friday, he kept it up over the weekend, lashing out at Jennifer Williams, who is an aide to Vice President Mike Pence and a foreign service officer. Williams will reportedly give testimony about Trump's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that is expected to make the already clear extortion scheme even clearer.

Trump's tendency to get even more riled up whenever women criticize him is no doubt a major concern for his staff going into this week. Multiple women not just Williams, but also Laura Cooper,a deputy assistant secretary at the Defense Department, and Fiona Hill, a former Russia specialist at the National Security Council are expected to testify before the Intelligence Committee. That's a lot of women saying stuff about Trump that happens to be both true and damning. Everyone knows that's an especially potent trigger for his ill-advised outbursts.

The big-mouth problem isn't limited to Trump, either. His lawyer, co-conspirator and all-around odious lackey Rudy Giuliani seems not to understand, even though he used to be a federal prosecutor, why suspected criminals invoke their Fifth Amendment rights. Instead, Giuliani's addiction to Twitter and TV cameras means thathe constantly says things that incriminate himself or the president or whoever else is in the line of fire.

SIt's not just Trump who is playing the victim of censorship by Democrats when the real issue is censorship from the White House itself. House Republicans are also getting in on this victimology trip, complaining that the witnesses called so far aren't close enough to the White House to be authoritative about what actually happened, and implying that Democrats are silencing such witnesses.

This is a lie, of course. There's plenty ofdocumentation showing Trump at the center of the extortion plot against Ukraine. But it's a lie wrapped in an even bigger lie, because there are several high-ranking administration officials who were directly involved in the Ukrainian extortion scheme, such as acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney (who has already confessed on TV) and outgoing Energy Secretary Rick Perry, whose centrality to the scheme was once again confirmed in a recent batch of leaked emails.

These people are right in the middle of things and could speak directly to what the president said and did. Trump has instructed them not to testify. In fact, Trump has tried to preventanyone who has information from testifying, reportedly lambasting Secretary of State Mike Pompeofor failing to do more to block State Department employees from showing up under subpoena.

The censorship isn't coming from the Democrats, who have a red carpet rolled out for anyone and everyone in the Trump administration who wants to talk. It's coming strictly from Trump, his staff and fellow Republicans, all of whom know that the last thing Trump needs is more information reaching the public. Republicans' big problem is that the man they've self-tasked with defending has an irrepressible need to incriminate himself and commit more crimes. So while they're whining about "freedom of speech," Donald Trump refuses to exercise his constitutional right to remain silent.

Jordan Continues Space Flight Aesthetic With The Aerospace 720 Lifestyle Shoe – Sneaker News

Out of Jordan brands offshoot, the 720-soled silhouettes may be among the weirdest or most surprising as they often dress up in toolings far removed from their own mainline. Rather than adhere to basketball principle as many of the original few, they often head out in exploration of where no man has gone before with its latest doing the same under its Aerospace 720 dubbing. The only bit heritage is found in small dosages of black and red, using it in seldom across a base of space-ready white synthetic. Constructions themselves, aside from the inclusion of the aforementioned, create an aesthetic not too dissimilar to that of an astronauts gear with various overlays enhancing visuals through contrasting circular molds. Heel wraps further arm all across with denotative type only adjacent while the lace units lead up with bright red stitching to a surprisingly ordinary Jumpman insignia. Along with the core cushioning right at the heel, the pair is a comfortable, futuristic departure through the lens of the brands own. Take a look at the pair right here and its likely that these will be hitting select retailers and possibly Nike.com within the coming months.

Those Who Purchased Park Aerospace (NYSE:PKE) Shares Five Years Ago Have A 36% Loss To Show For It – Yahoo Finance

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term Park Aerospace Corp. (NYSE:PKE) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 36% over a half decade. Unhappily, the share price slid 6.7% in the last week.

See our latest analysis for Park Aerospace

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Park Aerospace became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

It could be that the revenue decline of 26% per year is viewed as evidence that Park Aerospace is shrinking. This has probably encouraged some shareholders to sell down the stock.

The company's revenue and earnings (over time) are depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

NYSE:PKE Income Statement, November 19th 2019

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Park Aerospace's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Park Aerospace, it has a TSR of 7.7% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

Park Aerospace shareholders gained a total return of 13% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 1.5% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how Park Aerospace scores on these 3 valuation metrics.

Astronomers look inside meteorites and find the sugars needed for life – Astronomy Magazine

Life from Space

Scientists want to understand how life arose on Earth. To do that, they must first unravel how organic molecules form and interact in environments without living things. Geologic activity has erased records of much of the chemistry that happened pre-life on Earth. But meteorites -- pieces of primitive solar system rocks that have fallen to Earth -- preserve chemical records of what the solar system was like in our planet's early days.

We rely on meteorites to tell this story, said Daniel Glavin, an astrobiologist at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center and an author of the new study. Theyre basically frozen time capsules.

Scientists studying meteorites have already found molecules like amino acids and nucleobases, which are necessary for life. But they'd never seen ribose. This sugar makes up the backbone of RNA, a type of molecule responsible for carrying genetic messages in our cells. Furukawas team employed careful techniques to ensure they wouldnt destroy the sugars in their attempts to find them, and were able to uncover ribose and other sugars.

That Starlink Problem Astronomers Were Worried About Is Totally Happening – ScienceAlert

For the modern astronomer, satellites are just a part of life. There are more than 2,000 active ones currently orbiting Earth, and the smartest minds in space photography have managed to work out clever ways of removing the occasional fly over from their images of space.

But then there's Starlink. The first stages of SpaceX's plan to launch up to 42,000 satellites to provide Earth with complete internet coverage have clocked in at 122 objects so far; after the first major launch in May, astronomers were worried.

Now a second launch has occurred, and their concerns have truly started to materialise.

In the early hours of the morning on November 18 at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Northern Chile, the trail of newly launched Starlink satellites flew overhead, absolutely filling an image taken by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam).

Each one of those dotted line trails in the image below is a Starlink satellite.

(Cliff Johnson/Clara Martnez-Vzquez/DELVE Survey)

While taking about 40 exposures of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, SpaceX's Starlink satellite train entered the camera's vision around 90 minutes before sunrise, shining bright in the early morning sunlight and taking a whole five minutes to pass out of the telescope's view.

"Wow!! I am in shock," wrote CTIO astronomer Clara Martinez-Vazquez on Twitter. She noted there were 19 satellite trails, which is way more than a normal satellite pass.

Although most of the time the satellites will be dark in the night sky (which still presents some problems), just after the Sun goes down, or early morning when the sky is still black, sunlight can still hit the satellites, making them visible both by fancy astronomy telescopes, and just regular old binoculars.

"These things are big enough that when they're sunlit, they're bright enough to pick up with anything from binoculars and bigger," Cees Bassa from the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy told Forbes.

And astronomers are not impressed. As we've reported before, they've brought up some big issues with Starlink.Firstly, there are going to be a lot of these objects in orbit, which could dramatically impact the way astronomers can see and listen to the sky.

"A full constellation of Starlink satellites will likely mean the end of Earth-based microwave-radio telescopes able to scan the heavens for faint radio objects," Swinburne University astronomer Alan Duffy told ScienceAlert in May after the first launch of Starlink satellites.

The second batch of 60 Starlink satellites was launched just over a week ago on November 11, so they haven't yet reached their final operational altitude - but that altitude is expected to be lower than for the first batch.

Sky watchers are also finding that Starlink are more reflective then other satellites. If thousands of extra satellites weren't already a problem on their own, the fact they are extra-shiny is just another thing astronomers are pulling their hair out about.

Astronomers can remove the trails from their images when Starlink swans into view, but much of the information scientists use is contained in the raw images, not the pretty photos we see. Additionally, it's one thing to remove a single satellite trail from an image, and another to remove 19.

So far, some people are coping by poking fun at SpaceX's Elon Musk on social media.

How astronomers and SpaceX will resolve these conflicting needs is still unknown, but with two more launches scheduled this year, there's a chance this won't be the last we'll hear about this problem.

Will SpaceXs Starlink Mega-Constellation Ruin Astronomys Biggest Ever Eye On The Sky? – Forbes

The LSST is being built on Cerro Pachn in Chile.

Will Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink project end ground-based astronomy as we know it? Despite only 122 of a planned total of 42,000 broadband internet satellites being in orbit so far, astronomers are now gravely concerned about the mega-constellations effect on the US$466 million Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), one of the worlds most new important telescopes currently being built on the Cerro Pachn ridge in Chiles Elqui Valley.

From 2022, the LSST will survey the entire visible sky in just three nights, effectively producing a motion picture of our Universe. For anything that changes in the sky, the LSST will be the finderscope, says Aaron Roodman, an experimental cosmologist at Stanford University involved in instrument construction and preparations for the LSST. Were going to find a hundred thousand supernova by the time the project is over.

Crucially, the LSST will also catalog 90 percent of near-Earth objects larger than 300m and calculate if they are a threat to Earth.

Starlink is a threat to all that, and according to one astronomer involved in the LSST, SpaceX needs to do something about the visibility of its satellites.

The 6.5 meter mirror awaits installation at the LSST.

Cerro Pachn is the next mountain peak along from the Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory (CTIO)s main site in Chile, which a series of 19 Starlink satellites passed over on Nov. 18, 2019 and ruined observations from its Blanco telescope.

A 6.5 meter-class optical telescope designed to survey the visible sky every week at a far fainter level than presently possible, the LSST will have a 3.2-gigapixelCCD imagingcamera, the largest digital camera ever constructed.

The chamber inside the LSST that will eventually host humanity's biggest-ever camera.

If a supernova goes off, or an asteroid is spotted thats on a dangers trajectory, the LSST will find them, and in real-time alert astronomers and tell them where to point their larger telescopes.

A successor to the Subaru TelescopeandPan-STARRS, the LSST will be the latest and greatest sky survey. It will be uniquely sensitive to changes, something known as time domain astronomy. The LSST will snap 1,000 photographs each night in six wavelengths, from ultraviolet to near infrared, totalling 15 terabytes. Using a custom-made fiberoptic network installed on Cero Pachn, that data will be uploaded in real-time for use by astronomers around the world. Within a minute of taking an image, any object whose brightness or position has changed compared to previous images, will get flagged, says Roodman. In real time the images will be sent via fast fiber to the supercomputer centre at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois for primary processing.

The LSST is being built next to the Gemini South Observatory on Cerro Pachn in Chile on a sight ... [+] where astronomers witnessed a two-minute total solar eclipse on July 2, 2019.

The LSSTs decade-long survey of the night sky is due to begin in 2022 and catalog 40 billion celestial objects by 2032. It will also locate 10,000 primitive objects in the Kuiper Belt and study dark energy and dark matter. In the long term its data ought to allow astronomers to generate a highly detailed map of billions of galaxies, stars and objects in the solar system.

LSST uniquely scans the sky with a fast and wide cadence going to very faint limits, says Dr. Tony Tyson, Distinguished Professor at UC Davis, California and Chief Scientist for the LSST. This means that of all observatories it is most impacted by tens of thousands of bright low earth orbit satellites."

The fear is that its long exposure images of the night sky will contain streaks of lightStarlink satellitesthat block precisely what the LSST is trying to see.

Knowing the exact trajectory of the 42,000 Starlink satellites would help astronomers better aim the LSST away from the streaks, but only some of the time. There will be so many it is not feasible to dodge them, says Tyson. The only hope is for the operators like SpaceX to make them dimmer.

The exterior of the now-being-built LSST on Cerro Pachn.

Its even more of an issue for asteroid-detection because that takes place best at dusk and dawn which is precisely when satellites catch the glare of the Sun and become easily visible.

So why does it need such a big camera? We want to get images of every part of the sky as quickly as possible and maximise the field of viewhow big each picture is, says Roodman. The LSSTs field of view will be three and a half degrees across, which is about seven times the diameter of the full moon. To have such a big field of view you need a big camera and a big focal point, says Roodman. The camera will contain 189 custom-made 16 megapixel super-flat CCD sensors so advanced that it will be possible to digitize the entire image in only two seconds. We need to minimize the amount of time that we're not looking at the heavens, says Roodman. Its also a fast system with an aperture of f1.2 so we can get a picture with a narrow region in focus similar to bokeh.

On the way up to the LSST on Cerro Pachn.

Financially supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy Office of Science and private funding, the LSSTs construction is being supervised by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), an international consortium of universities and non-profit institutions that operate world-class astronomy facilities. In Chile, it already administers and operates the telescopes of Cerro Tololo, Gemini South, SOAR, and in the future LSST.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes

A weird, orbital dance keeps these moons of Neptune safely on track – Astronomy Magazine

The arrangement of the two moons orbits is an example of what scientists call an orbital resonance. Repeating patterns in their orbits apply a regular set of gravitational forces to the two moons. In this case, the repeating forces keep the moons in their orbits, but resonances can be disruptive as well.

Astronomers have found many examples of orbital resonances in the solar system. Pluto and Neptune are in a resonance in which Pluto orbits the Sun twice for every three times that Neptune does. This resonance keeps the two objects orbits stable. Within the asteroid belt, there are gaps without asteroids where resonance patterns from Jupiters orbit disrupt the path of large groups of space rocks.

However, the newly discovered resonance of Naiad and Thalassa isnt like anything scientists have seen in the solar system so far. Naiad and Thalassa are two small moons, each about 60 miles or so in size, with orbits nestled close together. Thalassa circles Neptune in about 7.5 hours, while Naiad laps it from the inside, taking just 7 hours per orbit.

But Naiads orbit is tilted by almost 5 degrees relative to Thalassas orbit and Neptunes equator. This makes the little moon weave up and down in a wave motion that keeps it farther from Thalassa even as it passes by. Though it looks bizarre, the arrangement reinforces the moons orbits and keeps them stable despite being so near each other.

Astronomers Finally Find the Neutron Star Leftover from Supernova 1987A – Universe Today

Astronomers at Cardiff University have done something nobody else has been able to do. A team, led by Dr. Phil Cigan from Cardiff Universitys School of Physics and Astronomy, has found the neutron star remnant from the famous supernova SN 1987A. Their evidence ends a 30 year search for the object.

SN 1987A was a supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It was a Type II supernova about 168,000 light years away, and the light reached Earth in 1987. Its scientifically significant because it presented a great opportunity to study core-collapse supernovae through its different phases.

For the very first time we can tell that there is a neutron star inside this cloud within the supernova remnant.

But even though scientists learned a lot by observing it, one question remained unanswered, until now. Where was the neutron star that should lie at the center of the expanding shock-wave? Supernova theory says it should be there, and neutrino data from the time provided the evidence.

Since nobody could find it, different reasons were advanced for why it wasnt there. Some wondered if SN 1987A formed a quark star instead of a neutron star. Another theory suggested that a pulsar was formed instead, and that its magnetic field was small or unusual, preventing us from detecting it. A third possibility was that gas and dust fell back into the neutron star, collapsing it into a black hole.

A more prosaic explanation was that it was there, just obscured by so much gas and dust that we cant see it.

Now this team says theyve found it with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope. Its hiding in a particularly bright patch of dust, right where the neutron star should be. The prosaic explanation wins again.

The team published their findings in the Astrophysical Journal. The paper is titled High Angular Resolution ALMA Images of Dust and Molecules in the SN 1987A Ejecta. The lead author is Dr. Phil Cigan from Cardiff University.

For the very first time we can tell that there is a neutron star inside this cloud within the supernova remnant, Dr. Cigan said in a press release. Its light has been veiled by a very thick cloud of dust, blocking the direct light from the neutron star at many wavelengths like fog masking a spotlight.

Dr. Mikako Matsuura is a senior lecturer in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University. Her research focuses on dust and molecules in supernova and supernova remnants, and she was one of the authors of this study.

Our new findings will now enable astronomers to better understand how massive stars end their lives

Although the light from the neutron star is absorbed by the dust cloud that surrounds it, this in turn makes the cloud shine in sub-millimetre light, which we can now see with the extremely sensitive ALMA telescope, said Matsuura.

Our new findings will now enable astronomers to better understand how massive stars end their lives, leaving behind these extremely dense neutron stars, continued Dr. Matsuura.

The light from SN 1987A was first spotted on February 23rd, 1987. It was about 160 million light years away, but it flared with light equal to 100 million Suns, and was bright for several months.

SN 1987A was the closest supernova in 400 years. Not since Keplers Supernova in 1604 has there been one this bright and this close. (Keplers Supernova was in the Milky Way, only 20,000 light years away.) Its been a constant object of attention to astronomers and astrophysicists, and theyve watched it closely for over three decades now.

The supernova explosion created a massive expanding shock-wave of gas, super-heated to over a million degrees F. As the gas cooled, some of it turned solid, forming a dense cloud of dust. Inside that dust is the neutron star, right where scientists thought it would be.

We are confident that this neutron star exists behind the cloud and that we know its precise location, said Matsuura. Perhaps when the dust cloud begins to clear up in the future, astronomers will be able to directly see the neutron star for the very first time.
