Supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy may have a friend – The Conversation US

Do supermassive black holes have friends? The nature of galaxy formation suggests that the answer is yes, and in fact, pairs of supermassive black holes should be common in the universe.

I am an astrophysicist and am interested in a wide range of theoretical problems in astrophysics, from the formation of the very first galaxies to the gravitational interactions of black holes, stars and even planets. Black holes are intriguing systems, and supermassive black holes and the dense stellar environments that surround them represent one of the most extreme places in our universe.

The supermassive black hole that lurks at the center of our galaxy, called Sgr A*, has a mass of about 4 million times that of our Sun. A black hole is a place in space where gravity is so strong that neither particles or light can escape from it. Surrounding Sgr A* is a dense cluster of stars. Precise measurements of the orbits of these stars allowed astronomers to confirm the existence of this supermassive black hole and to measure its mass. For more than 20 years, scientists have been monitoring the orbits of these stars around the supermassive black hole. Based on what weve seen, my colleagues and I show that if there is a friend there, it might be a second black hole nearby that is at least 100,000 times the mass of the Sun.

Almost every galaxy, including our Milky Way, has a supermassive black hole at its heart, with masses of millions to billions of times the mass of the Sun. Astronomers are still studying why the heart of galaxies often hosts a supermassive black hole. One popular idea connects to the possibility that supermassive holes have friends.

To understand this idea, we need to go back to when the universe was about 100 million years old, to the era of the very first galaxies. They were much smaller than todays galaxies, about 10,000 or more times less massive than the Milky Way. Within these early galaxies the very first stars that died created black holes, of about tens to thousand the mass of the Sun. These black holes sank to the center of gravity, the heart of their host galaxy. Since galaxies evolve by merging and colliding with one another, collisions between galaxies will result in supermassive black hole pairs the key part of this story. The black holes then collide and grow in size as well. A black hole that is more than a million times the mass of our son is considered supermassive.

If indeed the supermassive black hole has a friend revolving around it in close orbit, the center of the galaxy is locked in a complex dance. The partners gravitational tugs will also exert its own pull on the nearby stars disturbing their orbits. The two supermassive black holes are orbiting each other, and at the same time, each is exerting its own pull on the stars around it.

The gravitational forces from the black holes pull on these stars and make them change their orbit; in other words, after one revolution around the supermassive black hole pair, a star will not go exactly back to the point at which it began.

Using our understanding of the gravitational interaction between the possible supermassive black hole pair and the surrounding stars, astronomers can predict what will happen to stars. Astrophysicists like my colleagues and me can compare our predictions to observations, and then can determine the possible orbits of stars and figure out whether the supermassive black hole has a companion that is exerting gravitational influence.

Using a well-studied star, called S0-2, which orbits the supermassive black hole that lies at the center of the galaxy every 16 years, we can already rule out the idea that there is a second supermassive black hole with mass above 100,000 times the mass of the Sun and farther than about 200 times the distance between the Sun and the Earth. If there was such a companion, then I and my colleagues would have detected its effects on the orbit of SO-2.

But that doesnt mean that a smaller companion black hole cannot still hide there. Such an object may not alter the orbit of SO-2 in a way we can easily measure.

Supermassive black holes have gotten a lot of attention lately. In particular, the recent image of such a giant at the center of the galaxy M87 opened a new window to understanding the physics behind black holes.

The proximity of the Milky Ways galactic center a mere 24,000 light-years away provides a unique laboratory for addressing issues in the fundamental physics of supermassive black holes. For example, astrophysicists like myself would like to understand their impact on the central regions of galaxies and their role in galaxy formation and evolution. The detection of a pair of supermassive black holes in the galactic center would indicate that the Milky Way merged with another, possibly small, galaxy at some time in the past.

Thats not all that monitoring the surrounding stars can tell us. Measurements of the star S0-2 allowed scientists to carry out a unique test of Einsteins general theory of relativity. In May 2018, S0-2 zoomed past the supermassive black hole at a distance of only about 130 times the Earths distance from the Sun. According to Einsteins theory, the wavelength of light emitted by the star should stretch as it climbs from the deep gravitational well of the supermassive black hole.

The stretching wavelength that Einstein predicted which makes the star appear redder was detected and proves that the theory of general relativity accurately describes the physics in this extreme gravitational zone. I am eagerly awaiting the second closest approach of S0-2, which will occur in about 16 years, because astrophysicists like myself will be able to test more of Einsteins predictions about general relativity, including the change of the orientation of the stars elongated orbit. But if the supermassive black hole has a partner, this could alter the expected result.

Finally, if there are two massive black holes orbiting each other at the galactic center, as my team suggests is possible, they will emit gravitational waves. Since 2015, the LIGO-Virgo observatories have been detecting gravitational wave radiation from merging stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars. These groundbreaking detections have opened a new way for scientists to sense the universe.

Any waves emitted by our hypothetical black hole pair will be at low frequencies, too low for the LIGO-Virgo detectors to sense. But a planned space-based detector known as LISA may be able to detect these waves which will help astrophysicists figure out whether our galactic center black hole is alone or has a partner.

First Map of a Pulsar’s Surface Reveals ‘Hotspots’ in Unexpected Places – Space.com

Scientists have created the first "hotspot" map of the surface of a strange star, thanks to a telescope on the International Space Station.

The Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) got a view of a pulsar, a fast-rotating remnant of an exploded star. With these observations, scientists found that this pulsar, called J0030+0451 (or J0030 for short), has even weirder hotspots than they'd imagined.

Pulsars are the leftovers from huge stars that collapsed under their own gravity during supernova explosions. A pulsar's magnetic field is typically shaped like the curves generated from a household bar magnet, scientists suggest.

Additionally, pulsars have hotspots that glow in X-rays at their magnetic poles. That's because a pulsar's magnetism is so strong it can actually tear particles away from its own surface. A few of those particles follow the magnetic field lines and then slam into the other side of the object at its pole.

Yet, observations of J0030 show no hotspots at all in the pulsar's northern hemisphere the only area of the pulsar we can see from Earth. Researchers ran simulations and found that up to three hotspots may appear in its southern hemisphere, but we can't say for sure which interpretation is correct.

One team attempted to re-create the X-ray signals "using overlapping circles of different sizes and temperatures," NASA said in a statement, and then running the results through a supercomputer. With this method, the team found two hotspots: a small, circular one and a larger, crescent-shaped long one. This work was led by Thomas Riley, a doctoral student in computational astrophysics at the University of Amsterdam.

Another team did the same thing, but used ovals of different temperatures and sizes and a different supercomputer. Their simulation came up with two equally possible solutions. The first solution suggested that there are two ovals in the same locations found by the first team. Alternatively, there could also be a fainter, cooler spot that is a little away from the pulsar's south rotational pole, lingering amid the two ovals. This team was led by Cole Miller, an astronomy professor at the University of Maryland.

"Previous theoretical predictions suggested that hot spot locations and shapes could vary, but the J0030 studies are the first to map these surface features," NASA added. "Scientists are still trying to determine why J0030's spots are arranged and shaped as they are, but for now it's clear that pulsar magnetic fields are more complicated than the traditional two-pole model."

Through independent measurements of J0030, these teams also arrived at similar results for the pulsar's mass and size: Riley's team determined that the pulsar is roughly 1.3 times the mass of the sun and 15.8 miles (25.4 kilometers) in diameter, while Miller's team estimated that J0030 is 1.4 times the mass of the sun and about 16.2 miles (26 km) in diameter.

Several papers about NICER's observations of J0030 were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, including the ones led by Riley and Miller.

MYSTERIOUS flashing lights visible among the stars may be signs of alien activity, scientists claim.

Around 100 of the blinking red glow have been spotted by astronomers over the past 70 years and scientists still have no explanation for them.

In a new scientific paper, experts claim these lights could be evidence of an undiscovered space event ... or ET.

There's a chance they're signs of alien structures or "interstellar communication lasers", researchers wrote in the Astronomical Journal.

However, this is an outside bet, and the most likely source is "natural, if somewhat extreme astrophysical sources."

The team based in Sweden examined publicly accessible images, such as old military records, dating back to the 1950s.

They compared these historical observations to modern sky surveys to find signs of blinking lights, such as stars that have disappeared from the Milky Way.

"Finding an actually vanishing star or a star that appears out of nowhere! would be a precious discovery,"said project leader Beatriz Villarroel, of Stockholm University.

"It certainly would include new astrophysics beyond the one we know of today."

Stars typically die in one of two ways: Either slowly transitioning into white dwarfs or rapidly exploding as supernovae.

In total, 100 objects were found that fit neither of these categories. Instead, they disappeared from the night sky and appeared again later.

Researchers said they had no direct evidence the lights were caused by aliens.

However, they're almost out of ideas and warned an extraterrestrial origin could not be ruled out.

The only natural explanation for the lights would be a "failed supernova".

This is a theoretical prediction foe what happens when a very massive star collapses into a black hole.

It's thought such events don't give off an explosion, though they're extremely rare.

Whatever scientists find, the discovery of the source would likely change the face of astrophysics forever.

"The implications of finding such objects extend from traditional astrophysics fields to the more exotic searches for evidence of technologically advanced civilisations," experts wrote.

How did our galaxy form? How do galaxies evolve over time? Where did the Suns lost siblings end up?

Three hours north-east of Parkes lies a remote astronomical research facility, unpolluted by city lights, where researchers are collecting vast amounts of data in an effort to unlock some of the biggest questions about our Universe.

Siding Spring Observatory, or SSO, is one of Australias top sites for astronomical research. Youve probably heard of the Parkes telescope, made famous by the movie The Dish, but SSO is also a key character in Australias space research story.

In this episode, astrophysics student and Conversation intern Cameron Furlong goes to SSO to check out the huge Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT), the largest optical telescope in Australia.

The end of the Skywalker saga

This weeks release The Rise of Skywalker will mark the end of a nine-movie saga stretching back decades, which with an estimated combined box office revenue of more than$US9billion ($13 billion) is the second highest-grossing film franchise of all time.

This generations Star Wars franchise completes this summer with the much anticipated The Rise of Skywalker. In the wake of 2017s The Last Jedi, critics and fans will fast be trying to take stock of the legacy of the Star Wars phenomenon, said film studies expert Dr Bruce Isaacs, who has researched Hollywoods dominance of the movie industry.

While Star Wars is fantasy, its impossible to watch it without a scientific eye, said astrophysicist, cosmologist and sci-fi fan Professor Geraint Lewis.

The results? Some science is good, some is bad and much is downright awful. Sounds in space, magical forces and dogfighting battles, Star Wars has everything to make a physicist groan.

Astrophysicist and asteroseismologist Professor Tim Bedding has also looked into the science and science fiction of Star Wars, and says there is at least one thing the series got right.

Thanks to NASA's Kepler space telescope, we know that circumbinary planets planets like Tatooine that orbit two stars instead of one are a real thing. The Kepler mission has found several. So, while most of Star Wars is pure fantasy not based in science, that was actually a good prediction, he said.

Among the moviegoers flocking to cinemas to watchThe Rise of Skywalkerthis week are likely to be members of the practising Jedi population in Australia.

According toProfessor of Religious Studies Carole Cusack, Jediism as a new religious phenomenon debuted with the 'Jedi Census' e-mail campaign in 2001.

The 4 women on Nature’s ‘People who mattered in Science in 2019’ list – Women’s Agenda

Each year, Nature Magazine profiles 10 people who made a significant impact in the field of science.

This year, four women made it onto the list, including Macquarie University bioethicist Dr Wendy Rogers. Also on the list was Times Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg, American-Canadian astrophysicist Dr Victoria Kaspi and Argentinian ecologist Dr Sandra Daz.

Below we share a little more on each of the four women who made the list.

Dr Wendy Rogers, bioethicist, Macquarie University, SydneyDr Rogers is a bioethicist who has been researching the particularly challenging subject of forced organ donation in China, which the Chinese government once denied. Dr Rogers work involves examining research publications by Chinese transplant doctors with a team at Macquarie, with conclusions that prove donors have in fact, not given consent. Rogers draws on both her medical and philosophical training to expose sketchy data from Chinas organ donation programme. She was recently named Australias Research Field Leader for bioethics by The Australian.

Greta Thunberg, Activist, SwedenNature describes Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg as a climate action catalyst who is channeling a generations rage to shift policy and save the world for global climate disaster. Journalist Quirin Schiermeier notes that, Scientists have spent decades warning about climate change, but they couldnt galvanize global attention the way that Thunberg did this year. The Swedish 16-year-old has outshone them and many are cheering her along. Thunbergs spoken at the UN and been named 2019s Times Person of the Year.

Dr Victoria Kaspi, astrophysicist, McGill University, MontrealTo be a woman in the field of astrophysics is to have moved within the halls of male power. The field is largely and famously dominated by men; in fact, Nature reported last year that astronomy was losing women at three times the rate of men. Thats just one of the reasons why the work that Dr Kaspi has accomplished is earth-shatteringly impressive. For the past 25 years, the Canadian-American has used many of the worlds top telescopes to make fundamental astronomy. Two years ago, she was part of a team in Canada that built the worlds best detecter of fast radio bursts (FRBs) which are essentially mysterious flashes of radio energy that frequently pop off across the sky. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME for short) has since spotted hundreds of bursts, many more than any other telescopes around the world. In 2016, she won Canadas highest science prize, the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.

Dr Sandra Daz, ecologist, National University of Crdoba, ArgentinaWhat does a researcher who studies biodiversity do, exactly? Change the world! This year, Argentinian ecologist Diaz undertook the most exhaustive study ever of the worlds biodiversity, and finished with a 1,500 page document; expressing that that nations will fail to meet most global targets in biodiversity and sustainable development unless they make massive changes. The research also concluded that that one million species are heading for extinction because of human activities. Diazs history in conservation science has lead her to becoming an influential figure in policy-making not just in her home-country, but also, across the world. Last week, Diaz told Dissent Magazine; Biodiversity and natures contributions to people are our common heritage and humanitys most important life-supporting safety net, but our safety net is stretched almost to breaking point. The delicate ecological balance that has formed the basis for human civilization for the last 10,000 years is all but history.

Planetary Mass Objects Discovered in Other Galaxies – Universe Today

A team of researchers at the University of Oklahoma have discovered planetary mass bodies outside of the Milky Way. They were discovered in one gravitationally-lensed galaxy, and in one gravitationally-lensed galaxy cluster using a technique called quasar micro-lensing. According to the researchers, the planetary mass objects are either planets or primordial black holes.

These detections are the second and third of this type. The first occurred in 2018 involving some of the same researchers. There is currently no way to directly detect objects like these, and no way to differentiate between planets and small black holes.

The detection of planet-mass objects, either free-floating planets or primordial black holes, are extremely valuable for modeling of star/planet formation or early universe, said lead author Dai in a press release. Even without decomposing the two populations, our limit on the primordial black hole population are already a few orders of magnitude below previous limits in this mass range.

The new paper outlining these findings is titled Confirmation of Planet-mass Objects in Extragalactic Systems. The authors are Saloni Bhatiani, Xinyu Dai, and Eduardo Guerras. The paper is published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Weve learned a lot about the variety and relative abundance of planets in our own Milky Way galaxy in the last few years. But what about other galaxies? Theyre difficult to probe at that level of detail, which means weve had very little evidence about extra-galactic planets, only assumptions. But a new technique based on quasar micro-lensing is giving us more evidence.

The technique relies on the light from distant bright Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or quasars. Using that light, the researchers were able to study the spectrum in the light signatures of the planetary bodies. This allowed them to constrain the fraction of these planet-mass objects with respect to the galactic halo. The objects are about 0.01 % of the total mass of their host galaxies. Their masses range from from Jupiter to Moon mass and provide the most stringent constraints at this mass range.

The two systems are Q J0158-4325 and SDSS J1004+4112.

These objects are gravitationally unbound, and according to the researchers theyre one of two things: rogue free-floating planets that were ejected or scattered during the formation of stars and planets; or primordial black holes. As the researchers say in their paper, Our analysis suggests that unbound planet-mass objects are universal in galaxies, and we surmise the objects to be either free-floating planets or primordial black holes.

We can consistently extract signals from planet mass objects in distant galaxies. This opens a new window in astrophysics.

This study shows that planetary-mass objects are likely universal in galaxies. It also provides the first-ever constraints on mass for the intracluster region of a galaxy cluster. For primordial black holes, these limits are several orders of magnitude below previous limits. As they say in their paper, The planet to stellar scale astronomical dark matter is also known as massive compact halo objects (MACHOs.) It was previously constrained to be less than 10% of the total mass of the Milky Way. But this work brings that down to about 0.01 % of the total mass of their host galaxies.

We are very excited about the detections in two new systems, said Ph.D. student Saloni Bhatiani, who was one of the researchers. We can consistently extract signals from planet mass objects in distant galaxies. This opens a new window in astrophysics.

As the paper says, The number density of FFPs (free-floating planets) not only depends on the detailed ejection processes, but also on the planet formation models. Primordial black holes are thought to be formed during the inflation epoch from quantum fluctuations. Therefore, these planet-mass objects can either serve as a probe of star/planet formation and scattering process, or of fundamental physics in the very early universe in the inflation era.

So this work is striking because it confirms the existence of planetary-mass objects when the Universe was half the age it is now.

The data that supports this work came from NASAs Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observational evidence for these planet-mass objects was derived from the microlensing signals that appear as shifts in the X-ray emission line of the quasar. These observational measurements were matched against microlensing simulations that were computed at the OU Supercomputing Center for Education and Research.

Primordial black holes formed in the early universe. Theyre largely hypothetical, and if they do exist, they formed in the first second after the Big Bang. At that time, the universe was lumpy rather than homogenous, and astronomers think that some dense, hot regions couldve collapsed into black holes.

For some time, scientists, including the late Stephen Hawking, thought that dark matter could be primordial black holes. But that theory appears to have been put to bed in a 2019 paper.

Planetary Mass Objects Discovered in Other Galaxies - Universe Today

Redskins running back Adrian Peterson remains on a steady ascent up the NFL all-time rushing records, but for the 2019 season, getting to 1,000 yards remains the goal.

"Ill get there," Peterson said earlier this week.

Peterson will go into Sunday's game against the Eagleswith 718 rush yards, so he needs to average 94 yards-per-game in the last three games to get to 1,000 on the season.

He reached that milestone last year in one of the more remarkable comeback stories in recent NFL history. He was unsigned as training camps opened around the league and only came to Washington after an injury to rookie RB Derrius Guice in the preseason.

From there, he became the focal point of an ugly yet often effective Redskins offense. After Alex Smith went down with a broken leg, Peterson was all the Redskins had, and he nearly willed Washington to a near miraculous Wild Card spot.

This year, there will be no miracles and no Wild Card spot. At 3-10, Washington hasbeen mostly awful and unless they get a win in their three remaining games will post their worst record since 2013.

For 34-year-old Peterson, however, hes still playing at a strong level, and the 1,000 yard mark almost gives the last portion of the season some semblance of meaning.

It wont be easy though.

The Eagles give up 90 rush yards per-game, the third-best run defense in the NFL. In their last eight games, Philadelphia has given up 94 or more rush yards only four times.

After that, the Redskins face the Giants and the Cowboys. Both clubs give Peterson a chance to hit 1,000.

New York ranks 20th in the NFL in rush defense, giving up 114 rush yards-per-game. The Cowboys rank 19th against the run, allowing 110 yards-per-game.

Should Peterson get to Dallas in Week 17 needing a big game on the ground to get to 1,000, he could get it. As the Cowboys have slumped in the second half of the year, so too has their rush defense. Dallas has given up 100 rush yards in each of their last seven games, and even worse, the Cowboys have given up more than 150 rush yards twice during that span.

Ask Redskins coach Bill Callahan and it seems like Peterson will get every opportunity for yards.

"Id love for it to happen, especially for him. He did it again last year," Callahan said this week. "He did it under some really tough circumstances."

Last year marked Peterson's eighth time going for more than 1,000 yards, but his first since 2015. If he can get there this year, it would be his first time rushing for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons since 2012 and 2013. In 2012, Peterson actually rushed for more than 2,000 yards.

What would make 1,000 yards in 2019 even more remarkable? Peterson is 34.

In the Super Bowl era only one running back has run for more than 1,000 yards at age 34. His name is John Riggins, and he did so in a Redskins uniform in 1983.

Knowing Peterson, his goal for 2020 will be the same: 1,000 yards. Should that happen, Peterson would tie a record as the oldest NFL running back to gain 1,000 yards in a season.

The record holder at age 35? Riggins.

Growing up with an older brother can be difficult when it comes to competition. But growing up playing sports with all boys is another beast. For Calie Peterson, both of those things are true.

The 14-year-old has been playing on a travel hockey team since she was 6 years old. Many nights and summers are filled with travel and hockey with not much time for leisure in between, including, for most of that time, being the only girl skating up and down the ice.

Its fun, but it can get tiring at times, Calie said. Sometimes I just want to be home in my own bed, but I like it.

The Petersons passion for hockey came from Calies mother, Stacy, who grew up a hockey fan, and then played in a mens recreation league until Calies older brother, Ethan, was born.

I used to go to all the Lancer games really. Then I tried hockey one year and played on the Metro Classic Hockey League when I was 20. I learned there and then I got pregnant with my son, so I didnt get to play anymore, Stacy said. So then I was like, My kids are going to play hockey.

And thats exactly how it played out. Calie would accompany her mother to Moylan Iceplex for Ethans practices. While Calie would watch Ethan intently on the ice, Stacy, eventually, decided to put Calie on the other ice rink.

I thought I might as well put her in the Learn-to-Skate summer program on the other ice rink, Stacy said.

She was there anyways with me. She picked it up a lot quicker.

From there, Calies passion started to take off. After the Learn-to-Skate program, Calie completed the Initiation Program that year too. Shortly after, Ethan took his younger sister under his wing.

We would shoot pucks in the basement, and we would play PIG but hockey style. It was our own little game and he would always beat me, but I would always call for a rematch, Calie said. He would work on stick handling and faceoffs with me because I was center. He taught me how to skate and we used to roller blade around the driveway to just get a feel for the skates.

At the age of six, Calie played on the U8 Mites boys travel team that played up a level in the U10 Squirt Selection division. At such a young age, kids at school wouldnt believe Calie played hockey, or they just didnt know the sport.

They would be like, Whats hockey? or something like that, Calie said.

While mixing in basketball and softball, Calie played hockey with the boys travel programs up until the U14 leagues, where body checking is allowed.

While on the boys teams, Calie was a key team player by notching the most assists on her teams as well as several Player of the Game awards at numerous tournaments. She used her small stature and blazing speed to her advantage against boys teams especially teams that liked to be physical on the ice.

She was always faster than the boys. They couldnt keep up with her. She was kind of a natural, Stacy said. Ethan had to work at it. She just didnt care. She would push the boys around and push them over. When she played with the boys, they protected her and, sometimes, she protected them. She was always just one of the boys.

The main reason for playing eight years with boys was the limited amount of options when Calie started playing hockey.

Here in Omaha, it has taken a while to take off. We started her in boys because there was so much more there, Stacy said. I mean, the girls, you were 14 years old, but all lumped in with six, seven and eight year olds because didnt have enough girls to make a team.

Now, it practically doubled, at least, in the last three years. Thats why we were so hesitant about moving her to girls until she could make that top level team.

Last season is when the Petersons decided to make a change and move to girls hockey. As a seventh grader, Calie made the Tier II Omaha Lady Junior Lancer U19 team the top girls team in Omaha.

While starting at center, the 5-foot-1 center finished with 20 goals and over 15 assists in her first season.

It was definitely different. I never did like playing with girls my age because they werent as advanced, Calie said. The speed kind of stayed the same by playing with older girls, but the boys are different.

Between the two, Calie misses the play on the ice with the boys, but loves the comradery of the girls team.

I like (playing with the boys) a lot more. Its a lot more fun, Calie said. The girls are more of a family, but the boys are always trying to compete against each other. The girls pick each other up more.

Calie continued that high level of play into this season. During the Colorado Cup Tournament, she was awarded Playmaker of the Game. Then at the Chicago Girls Winter Classic, Calie finished the tournament ranked 17th of 529 girls in total points for all divisions.

In April, Calie attended the USA Hockey Central District Player Development Camp tryouts and then she was later selected to the week-long USA Hockey Central District Player Development Camp. Both camps were in Wisconsin.

In July, she competed in the 2019 Cornhusker State Games and State Games of America on boys teams winning two Gold medals and one Silver medal. At the Cornhusker State Games, Calie tallied three goals and three assists over the weekend to win the Gold medal, while it was her first experience with body checking.

The bench went crazy. The kid was small too, Calie said. He was probably a little smaller than me, but I wanted to do it again. (My brother) was always a hitter. He would rather hit than play the puck.

Once again, she was also the only female competing. Her performance led to her being awarded the 2019 Cornhusker State Games Youth Female Athlete of the Year on Nov. 7th. Winning the award automatically nominated her for the National Youth Female Athlete of the Year for the State Games of America.

I didnt realize it was that big of a deal, Calie said.

From there, Calie was selected as one of the top 68 girls in the country to attend the STX 68 in Chicago in August which is a four-day Premier Major Bantam Camp that tests strength, conditioning and on-ice skills.

With the top 68 boys and top 68 girls selected from all over the United States, Calies team finished undefeated during the combine, while, personally, she tied for seventh place in total points scored. Furthermore, her biggest accomplishment was being ranked first overall out of the 68 girls for the on-ice testing and was named the fastest skater in the 30-meter backwards skate.

While going to camps or playing in games is the way to showcase yourself to friends, family, coaches or scouts, its the work thats put in when nobody is around that separates many athletes. After attending camps in April, Calie spent the entire 10 weeks of summer working out on and off the ice at Moylan Iceplex with NXT Level Hockey Academy for four hours a day and five days a week.

When I went to the Central Districts Hockey Camp and the STX 68 Camp, the whole time they talked about college, Peterson said. And I know if I want to play at the college level then I have to start the little things early otherwise its not going to be an option.

Shes never complained once about getting up at 6 a.m. for other things because shes had to do it for hockey and it makes her more structured, Stacy added.

The friendships shes made has trumped about any kind of sport. While some current teammates travel from Des Moines to Omaha for practice or other cities for games, Calie has traveled to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Colorado and St. Louis to name a few for camps and tournaments.

Shes developed relationships with other players from about any place in the United States and even Canada. Wherever her future takes her, theres a good chance a person she knows will be within distance.

Many East Coast prep schools have inquired about Calie, but the Petersons would prefer her closer to home. Calie wants to move up to the AAA division for her next step, but the two closest teams are in Sioux Falls or Chicago.

This season, she has totaled over 30 goals and more than 20 assists in only 22 games to help the Lady Junior Lancers be ranked 10th in the nation. Its another milestone for Calie to add to her long list of awards and accomplishments. Even if she doesnt know how long the list really is.

Shes never shown me all of them!, Calie said.

Weve got to keep her humble, Stacy added. She knows but she doesnt think about it.

These Are The Democrats Who Voted Against Impeaching President Trump – BuzzFeed News

WASHINGTON Two Democrats broke with their party and voted against impeaching President Donald Trump Wednesday night.

Reps. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey were the only Democrats who opposed impeaching the president. But Van Drew, the partys most vocal impeachment critic, plans to leave the Democratic Party in the coming days and become a Republican, after Trump made an appeal to him in a meeting last week.

Another Democrat, Maine Rep. Jared Golden, voted yes on impeaching Trump for abuse of power, but voted no on impeaching him for obstruction of Congress. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, voted present on both articles.

Van Drew and Peterson were the only Democrats to break with their party on an October vote to formalize the impeachment inquiry. Peterson said in the days leading up to the vote that he would likely oppose the articles of impeachment as well, while Van Drew prepared to leave the party.

A number of Van Drews staff resigned Sunday, writing in a letter that his decision to join the ranks of the Republican party led by Donald Trump does not align with the values we brought to this job when we joined his office.

Peterson said he, too, was approached about switching parties by the highest levels of the Republican party in the lead-up to the impeachment vote, but decided against it. Peterson, one of the most conservative Democrats in the House, was first elected in 1991. He, unlike most of his colleagues, supports giving Trump money to build a wall on the Southern border and is staunchly anti-abortion. He maintains an A rating from the National Rifle Association and beat his Republican opponent by about four points in 2018.

Golden, a first-year Democrat, narrowly defeated a Republican last year and is among the list of frontline Democrats party leadership considers most vulnerable in the upcoming election. In 2016, his district voted for Trump by 10 points.

In a statement Tuesday, Golden said he believed the House had clearly unearthed evidence that Trump abused the power of his office by asking Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family. This action crossed a clear red line, and in my view, there is no doubt this is an impeachable act, the statement said.

But Golden said he planned to vote against the second article of impeachment because he did not believe the House had met the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors related to obstruction of Congress.

Though Democrats did not tell members how they should vote on the articles of impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi worked doggedly in recent weeks to secure moderate votes for the articles that ultimately went to the floor abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Many progressives and longtime impeachment supporters wanted a third article addressing obstruction of justice and Russian interference, related to former special counsel Robert Muellers report, but many moderates felt it went too far. In an effort to appease members on the fence, Pelosi instead made the call that the House would bring just two articles to the floor.

Still, following the release of the articles of impeachment, several moderate Democrats who had been skeptical of the inquiry including Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Kurt Schrader, Anthony Brindisi, and Ben McAdams met to discuss the possibility of censuring the president instead of impeaching him, according to a Politico report last week. Censuring would formally condemn Trumps actions, without actually sending him to a Senate trial for removal from office.

The group ultimately voted in favor of impeaching the president, though McAdams acknowledged at a press conference that he had hoped for a censure vote instead.

I hoped to find bipartisan common ground to censure the president instead of putting the country through a divisive and lengthy Senate impeachment trial with a predetermined outcome of dismissal, the Utah member said, adding I cannot turn a blind eye, thereby condoning this president and future presidents Republican or Democrat to do the same.

On Tuesday night ahead of the vote, Gabbard who is currently running in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary also said she supported a censure motion and was undecided on how she would vote on the articles of impeachment. Ultimately, she voted present on both articles.

New York Rep. Max Rose, another closely watched moderate Democrat and one of the last to officially support the inquiry, released a statement last weekend announcing that he would vote for both articles.

A President coercing a foreign government into targeting American citizens is not just another example of scorched earth politics, it serves as an invitation to the enemies of the United States to come after any citizen, so long as they disagree with the President. Embarking on an unprecedented effort to obstruct this inquiry doesnt make the facts any less true, the statement read.

Patrick Peterson says he will be back with the Cardinals in 2020 – ClutchPoints

It looks like the Arizona Cardinals star cornerback is here to stay. After the Cardinals last home of the 2019 season, eight-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson was asked if Sundays game against the Cleveland Browns would be his last home game as a Cardinal.

The 29-year-old star assured media that he would back in Arizona for next year. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound cornerback out of LSU signed a five-year contract worth over $70 million in 2014 and is under contract until 2020. The cornerback is set to make $12,050,00 next year in Arizona.

Since he entered the league in 2011, Peterson has been one of the best players at his position. The three-time First Team All-Pro selection has recorded 24 interceptions, 78 pass deflections and 423 tackles throughout his nearly nine-year career.

This season, despite missing the first six weeks of the season due to suspension and injury, the veteran cornerback has totaled 36 tackles, one sack, and one interception. Before this year, the Cardinals star has been incredibly durable playing in all 128 of his first 128 games.

Despite Peterson being a constant star for Arizona, the Cardinals pass defense has been awful this year. The Cardinals have surrendered a league-worst 294.2 passing yards per game and 28.8 points per game which ranks 31st.

The swiss cheese defense is a big reason why Arizona sits in last place in the NFC West with a 4-9-1 record. However, in the past, with Peterson as the star, the Cardinals defense has been elite. The last time they made the playoffs, 2015, the secondary allowed just 230.4 passing yards per game that ranked within the top 10 in the NFL that season.

Justice for Kona: Puppy Station in Post Oak Mall closed in wake of lawsuit – KAGSTV.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas A pet store located in the Post Oak Mall in College Station has officially closed its doors. The store was at the center of viral social media posts after former customers claimed it was housing animals in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. One former customer, Riley Peterson, told KAGS News she felt the store was responsible for the death of her puppy, and a Brazos County Judge agreed.

"It was some way to get some kind of justice and show other people that it is possible to do something," Peterson said. In a story we first brought you in June of 2019, Peterson and her boyfriend, Wesley Goldwater, bought a puppy they named Kona from the Puppy Station in April of 2019.

We pretty much just flooded her with love right at the beginning, Wesley told us in June. "She was just so sweet. She was the sweetest thing in the world. By May, the couple had to put Kona down after she became so sick, she couldn't walk. Later, their vet told them Kona had intestinal parasites and distemper.

When Peterson shared her story to her social media pages, she was flooded with stories from other customers of the Puppy Station and was even given video by a person who claimed to be a former employee, who took video of the conditions inside the store. Those videos have been viewed more than 40,000 times.

Then came a Facebook group called 'Shut Down Puppy Station Now' and it was through that group that Peterson met people who talked with her about filing a lawsuit against the business.

I sent demand letters. Waited for the trial," Peterson said. "We did a lot of research on laws and on all my receipts and all the stuff that weve done over the course of eight months." Peterson said they did it all without a lawyer, something she is proud she was able to do on her own, with the help of people from her Facebook group.

The lawsuit judgement came in November of this year, but Peterson said it wasn't about the money. "It was about getting justice for Kona," she said. Puppy Station has been closed as of December 14 and former employees posted on Peterson's Facebook group the owner told them it would not be reopening. It is unknown at this time if Peterson's lawsuit has any connection to the closing of the store.

We reached out to the owner of Puppy Station. Calls to the business are unanswered and we were unable to leave a message as the mailbox was full. We have left a message for him through other means and are waiting to hear back. The company's Facebook page no longer exists.

Puppy Station in College Station has shut down its social media pages and closed its doors.

Champaign moms to open preschool that will ‘immerse children in nature, play’ – Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette

CHAMPAIGN A love of the outdoors came naturally, you might say, for sisters Caity Peterson and Ellen Saathoff.

Their dad, Brian Deal, is a landscape architecture professor at the University of Illinois. And their moms father, Bruce Hannon, is an emeritus geology professor and a longtime environmental activist.

They spent their childhood hiking in Allerton Park, helping their grandfather plant burr oaks and playing outside all summer.

Now they want to share their passion with a younger generation at a new nature school, a preschool and after-school program that will immerse children in nature, play and being outside, Saathoff said.

Thats how we were brought up, Saathoff said. It was just a big part of our childhood, a big part of what we want to pass on for our own kids and for other kids.

Sprouts Art and Nature School will open in January in a remodeled 1924 house on a tree-filled lot at 1403 W. Springfield Ave., C. An open house is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The two women, who both hold UI degrees in early-childhood education, opened a child-care service in Petersons house in 2014. Saathoff was pregnant with her first child, and Peterson had taken some time off from teaching kindergarten at South Side Elementary School after having her third child.

They saw the venture as a chance to raise their own children and still work in the field they loved.

Theyve been developing a nature-based curriculum ever since, and now weve got the space to match, said Saathoff, mom to Freddy, 3, and Richie, 5.

The curriculum features lessons on the nature of central Illinois, with units on bugs, trees, birds and flowers.

We believe in the importance of imagination, making connections, play and authentic nature experiences over teacher-led direct academic instruction, said Peterson, who has three children, Mae, 7, George, 9 and Violet, 10.

Their husbands Derek Peterson and Joe Saathoff worked with Brian Deal to renovate the basement for the original preschool, and they are again the loving builders behind this place, Ellen Saathoff said Monday at the new Sprouts school.

Their mom, Claire Deal, is the official substitute; she went back to college to get the remaining credit hours she needed.

We couldnt do this without them, Saathoff said.

Displayed around the new center are their students nature-inspired works of art watercolors of leaves, butterflies and rain-streaked windows; a garland with caterpillars and other insects made out of colorful scrap materials; acrylic pendants with pinecones and evergreen cuttings inside.

Most of the books tie into the nature theme, including the sisters childhood favorite, the Caldecott Award-winner Roxaboxen. The book is about children who build a magical community out of ordinary objects like pebbles, sticks and boxes and their imaginations.

Its just such a good example, Saathoff said. Everything they need is already here.

Outside, they set up a mud kitchen with an old sink for making mud pies. A shelving unit was filled with twigs and other natural objects that the children use to make up elaborate games. A path encircles the yard, leading to a butterfly garden popular with monarchs and a real garden that produced squash and watermelon this year.

Most striking is a giant birds nest, with a metal frame built by the welding class at Central High School. Its designed for kids to climb inside and build their own nest with sticks and other materials.

In the spirit of sustainability, the sisters have tried to repurpose as much as they can.

The wood tables were crafted from the houses original framework. Outside, a table and chairs were built out of tree stumps. The deck had to be replaced, so the old lumber was used for a boardwalk.

They chose the house in part because its two blocks from Westview Elementary School so they can walk to pick up their kids.

Its not new construction. Its covered with trees and its a huge lot, in town, which is so rare, Saathoff said.

Sprouts will have a morning preschool, an extended-day preschool and an after-school program for school-aged children. It will have room for 12 preschoolers ages 2 to 5, and 20 kids altogether.

One of our goals is to build a community of people who believe in raising the next generation of environmentalists. Saathoff said.

AMES, Ia. With respect to my friends in the online recruiting world ...

Your star ranking system works sometimes. It probably works many times, to be honest. With Iowa State, though, its different.

Coach Matt Campbell and his staff arent pulling in the five-star recruits that some opponents routinely get. Heck, theyre not getting nearly as many four-star recruits as the competition, either, although securing two during this recruiting cycles is pretty good.

College football fans pay attention to recruiting rankings especially during this early-signing period but really, what does it mean? If rankings were to be believed, then Texas would be churning out Big 12 Conference championship after championship, and not losing against the Cyclones and sharing third place with seemingly everyone else in the conference.

In Campbells case, recruiting is about development. Its more about eventually and patiently molding a three-star recruit into a five-star game day player.

That was evident again Wednesday, when his 21-player recruiting class included four-star quarterbacks Hunter Dekkers of West Sioux of Hawarden and Aidan Bouman of Buffalo, Minnesota and a bunch of three-star players.

Does this mean Dekkers, the talented strong-armed guy whocrushed nearly every Iowa high school record, is the gem of the 2020 recruiting class?

Maybe after Brock Purdy is finished rewriting the schools quarterback record book. But until then, Dekkers will be developing his craft alongside Bouman, the other just-signed quarterback recruit.

Iowa States most significant recruit who returned a signed national letter of intent Wednesday is three-star defensive lineman Latrell Bankston. From Day One, Bankston better be ready to play at a high level, because the 2020 team on which hell play should be very good. Hed better quickly adapt to Jon Heacocks three-player defensive front assuming he wins the starting job. You can say the same for three-star juco transfer receiver Xavier Hutchinson. With LaMichael Pettway and Deshaunte Jones gone after the bowl game, someone has to make up for at least part of their combined 123 regular-season receptions.

Hes got good size, at 6-3 and 200 pounds. Oklahoma and Nebraska tried to flip his commitment.

I dont know that theres a better wide receiver in the country right now coming into a college football program thanwhat Xavier is, Campbell said of the former Blinn JC star. You saw that in his recruiting toward the end. You watch the videotape of his sophomore year at Blinn its as good as any videotape as Ive ever seen of a wide receiver that weve had the opportunity to recruit.

Bankston and Hutchinson are two reasons why, for now anyway, three-star guys have more immediate importance than anyone else in Campbells recruiting class.

Look at this class and the classes previous, Campbell said. What weve been really good atis finding guys that fit our culture.

To develop within a football program is the most critical aspect of recruiting. Today is a great day, but all it isis a start. Now its the opportunity to get into something thats really hard, and this is really hard what we ask our kids to do.

Do you have the mental fortitude and comfort and trust in the people around you to be able to develop, and become the best version of you that you can be?

And who even says the star-system is accurate?

Take Iowa States 2018 class, for example. Those 21 signings included four-star receiver Joe Scates and a three-star quarterback with the last name of Purdy.

Re-rate from what we know today. Scates likely stays a four-star recruit, but if Purdy doesnt ascend to five-star status then the Internet ranking system is all messed up.

Diving deeper into the stars, look at the pro-style quarterbacks in Purdys recruitingclass. Trevor Lawrence was No. 1. Purdy was No. 24, according to the 247.com web site.

Purdys 3,760 passing yards this season was fourth nationally ahead of all the 2019 pro-style quarterbacks ranked before him.

Don't abandon the star system. Just don't use it as the only factor in ranking a recruiting class. There are plenty of examples to the contrary.

Strange Litecoin Network Activity Could Be Related To August Dust Attack – Cointelegraph

Product developer Franklyn Richards has witnessed Litecoin (LTC) network activity that reminds him of the Aug. 10 dust attack on Litecoin.

In a Dec. 14 blog post, Franklyn Richards, a product developer who has worked on Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin since 2013, describes a pattern emerging among active Litecoin network addresses.

According to the product developer an unknown entity is taking large periodic automated actions on the Litecoin network, resulting in an almost sawtooth like pattern. He explains:

On average the network typically sees around 40,000 active addresses per day, however, according to data from bitinfocharts, every 7 days this value is spiking to over 70,000 before abruptly dropping back down. This has resulted in an almost sawtooth like pattern thats pretty evident given a cursory glance.

Richards speculates that the current strange network behavior, which reportedly started on Aug. 20, appears to be related to the Aug. 10 dust attack that was announced through the official Binance Twitter account at the time.

On Aug. 10, the Litecoin community was up in arms as Binance announced news of a potential dusting attack. The firm explained that around 50 Binance Litecoin addresses received a fractional amount (0.00000546) of Litecoin, which the exchanges security team identified as a part of large-scale dusting attack.

A dusting attack occurs when hackers send a tiny fraction of a cryptocurrency to a large group of addresses. These small fractions are referred to as dust, as they can be as small as 1 Satoshi, which most users dont even notice or may think of as harmless. Since the balances are so small, they cannot be spent without being included in a transaction along with the victims other funds, which allows the hacker to trace and de-anonymize the victim behind the wallet.

However, Richards concludes his blog by pointing out that without proper access to more data tools for the Litecoin network, its hard to properly analyse the actions behind the behaviour.

Litecoin celebrated its eight birthday on Oct. 13, an event highlighted by its founder Charlie Lee, who famously sold and donated all his LTC holdings back in Dec. 2017. He said at the time:

Steering clear of the major resistance levels, Litecoin fell through the first major support level at $38.08 to a new swing lo.

A recovery to $39 levels was brief, with Litecoin sliding to a late intraday low and new swing lo $36.16.

Litecoin fell through the first major support level at $38.08 and second major support level at $36.27 before closing out at $36.98

At the time of writing, Litecoin was up by 1.27% to $37.45. A bullish start to the day saw Litecoin rise from an early morning low $36.73 to a high $37.78.

Litecoin left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.

Litecoin would need to move back through to $37.75 levels to support a run at the first major resistance level at $39.31.

Support from the broader market would be needed for Litecoin to break out from $38 levels.

Barring a broad-based crypto rally, however, Litecoin would likely fall well short of $40 levels on the day.

Failure to move through to $37.75 levels could see Litecoin resume the downward trend.

A fall back through the morning low $36.73 would bring the first major support level at $35.41 into play.

Litecoin Price Analysis: LTC/USD has a chance to recover towards $40.00 – FXStreet

Litecoin (LTC), the sixth-largest digital asset with the current market capitalization of $2.3 billion, has been losing ground rapidly. LTC/USD has lost about 6.5% of its value in recent 24 hours to trade at $37.11 at the time of writing.

Litecoin is moving in sync with the market. Therefore, itis vulnerable to bearish sentiments on the broad cryptocurrency market and may regain some ground if the market starts a recovery. As the liquidity is decreasing ahead of the Christmas holiday period, the coin may demonstrate sharp movements in either direction.

On a daily chart, LTC/USD broke below the Bollinger Band to trade at $37.12, off the recent low of $36.28. The daily RSI (Relative Strength Index) is demonstrating signs of reversal from the oversold territory. This technical setup implies that the price may regain some ground with the first recovery target created by the lower line of the daily Bollinger Band at $38.23. Once it is out of the way, the upside is likely to gain traction with the next focus onpsychological $40.00 and $44.00 ( the middle line of the daily Bollinger Band). Notably, this area served as a resistance at the beginning of December.

If the sell-off resumes, LTC/USD may retest the recent low of $36.28 and continue the decline towards the lower line of the Bollinger Band on a weekly chart ($35.50). If this area gives way, a psychological $30.00 will come into view. The last time LTC traded below this handle was in January 2019. Once it is out of the way, we will be mainly in uncharted territory.

Litecoin fell through the first major support level at $42.85 before recovering to $43 levels in the early afternoon.

The recovery was short-lived, however, with a crypto meltdown seeing Litecoin slide to a late intraday low and new swing lo $38.98.

Litecoin fell through the major support levels before steadying. In spite of finding late support, Litecoin wrapped up the day at sub-$40 for the 1st time since February

At the time of writing, Litecoin was down by 0.53% to $39.69. A mixed start to the day saw Litecoin rise to an early morning high $40.06 before falling to a low $39.51.

Litecoin left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.

Litecoin would need to move through to $40.80 levels to support a run at the first major resistance level at $42.61.

Litecoin would need the support of the broader market to break out from $40 levels.

Barring a broad-based crypto rally, however, Litecoin would likely fall well short of $42 levels on the day.

Failure to move through to $40.80 levels could see Litecoin slide deeper into the red. A fall back through the morning low $39.51 would bring the first major support level at $38.08 into play.

Stellars Lumen fell through the first major support level at $0.05066 before recovering to $0.0510 levels.

The recovery was brief, however. Pressured by a crypto meltdown, Stellars Lumen tumbled to a late intraday low and new swing lo $0.047121.

Stellars Lumen fell through the days major support levels before steadying.

At the time of writing, Stellars Lumen was down by 2.72% to $0.04606. A bearish start to the day saw Stellars Lumen slide from an early morning high $0.047402 to a new swing lo $0.04580.

Finding support late in the day, Trons TRX managed to break back through the third major support level at $0.01339.

At the time of writing, Trons TRX was down by 0.19% to $0.013413. A bearish start to the day saw Trons TRX fall from an early morning high $0.013443 to a low $0.013316.

Trons TRX left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.
