For the holidays, astronauts baked cookies in space that they wont actually eat – The Verge

This Christmas season, astronauts aboard the International Space Station got into the holiday spirit by baking cookies for Santa in microgravity. Yet neither Santa nor the astronauts will be able to enjoy the baked cookies, since making them was part of a science experiment, designed to test a new oven on the orbital lab. Instead, the cookies will remain sealed and uneaten, only to be returned to Earth later on for analysis.

The cookies were made possible thanks to a newly developed space oven sent to the ISS in early November, aboard a Cygnus cargo spacecraft made by Northrop Grumman. The blue, cylindrical oven is the product of a New York-based startup called Zero G Kitchen and space technology developer Nanoracks, with ingredients provided by DoubleTree by Hilton.

The goal of the seemingly cruel experiment was to see if baking in a space environment is even possible. Here on Earth, turning cookie dough into a finished cookie is pretty straightforward. You put the dough on a pan in an oven, while hot air within the oven rises and fans circulate the heat throughout the tiny space. This causes the heat to be evenly distributed all over the cookie, causing it to puff upward and outward. But in space, heating gets tricky. Hot air doesnt rise like it does here on Earth, and theres no guarantee your cookie will stay on that pan; instead, it might just float away.

The Zero G Oven, as its named, is designed to combat these problems. It doesnt just work like your oven on the ground, Mary Murphy, senior internal payloads manager at Nanoracks, said during a press conference before the ovens launch in November. We actually have to pretty substantially change the design of the oven, from what you thought about to what it actually is. To evenly heat the dough within, the oven is shaped like a cylinder with heaters lining every side; that way, the cookie is heated evenly all over. And to make sure the cookie doesnt float away within the oven, the dough must be loaded in via a special tray that traps the ingredients inside a tight pouch.

Luca Parmitano, an astronaut with the European Space Agency, tried baking samples on December 12th, 13th, and 17th with some success. The oven is very, very simple to use, and I think it worked as expected, Parmitano said in a statement provided by NASA. We were able to bake the samples, but it took a few attempts to figure out how long they had to stay in the oven.

Parmitano said the first three cookies he tried to bake came out pretty doughy, but the last two were nice and brown, with melted chocolate chips. The samples are now stored in a freezer to be returned to the Earth for analysis. Well see how well it worked! he said.

Since this is all very experimental, the researchers didnt want the astronauts eating any improperly baked cookies, which is why the astronauts only get to pose for pictures with their treat. The samples will head back to Earth on an upcoming cargo trip home so that researchers on the ground can get a better look at the finished products. But ultimately, the idea of having the astronauts bake cookies they cant eat is to see if its possible to have such small comforts of home when people go on multi-year trips to deep-space destinations in the future.

What are we going to do when were in those experiences, and what are we going to need for those people to have a good experience and to be able to perform all these tasks that were going to ask of them to do all this amazing science research, said Murphy. So one of the things that that came to us as an opportunity was looking at baking in space.

But dont fear for the astronauts appetites. DoubleTree sent up a few pre-baked cookies to the station along with the raw dough, in case making the treats triggered some sugar cravings.

Rewind 2019: A Look Back at Significant Developments in Indian Science This Year – The Weather Channel

Representational image: A young science enthusiast peering at the sky using a telescope

Chandrayaan-2 may have dominated popular imagination during 2019 despite the Vikram Lander failing to soft-land on the lunar surface, but the year was marked by several significant developments by Indian scientists in fields ranging from nanotechnology to climate change.

The run-up to the lunar mission with planned landing of the lander-cum-rover, the launch campaign, the journey to the lunar orbit and the landing sequence all attracted national and international attention. The year ended in triumph for citizen science when Chennai-based software engineer, Shanmuga Subramanian, discovered debris of Vikram on the lunar surface using publicly available high-resolution images of the landing site. This development comes close to a rise in citizen science initiatives in the country.

Staying with space and astronomy, star of an exoplanet was named after Indian physicist, Bibha Chowdhury. During the year, Indian software engineers got readied software that will run the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), which is slated to be the worlds largest ground-based telescope operating at optical and infrared wavelengths. Details about TMT and other international Big Science projects in which India is participating were on display in a roving exhibition called Vigyan Samagam which attracted huge crowds.

Climate change: Responding to climate change impacts being seen in the Himalayan region, Indian scientists developed a common framework for assessment of climate change vulnerability in all the states in the region, using an index based on socio-economic factors, demographic and health status, sensitivity of agricultural production, forest-dependent livelihoods, and access to information, services and infrastructure. This knowledge will now be applied to develop a countrywide map of climate vulnerability.

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) found a link between warming of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and changing rainfall patterns in many parts of the globe, including India. The warming pools of the Indo-Pacific Ocean are expanding, and this, in turn, is altering a major weather phenomenon known as the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO). The warming of Indo-Pacific Ocean is occurring due to man-made emissions. Another group from the Indian Institute of Science warned that as many as 55 percent of glaciers in the Satluj basin may disappear by 2050. and 97 percent by 2090, under extreme climate change scenario. Using ice thickness of glaciers as the basis, scientists also estimated that glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayas might contain 27% less ice than previously suggested.

Eco-friendly technologies: The year saw progress towards development of less polluting crackers, with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) releasing first set of green crackers. A national centre to pursue R&D in clean coal technologies was also opened in Bangalore. Eight teams of innovators from different parts of the world were selected for an international competition to develop more efficient and climate-friendly cooling solutions for residential buildings. The team will get seed money to translate their ideas into prototypes. The final winner of the Global Climate Prize will be announced in November 2020.

Representational image: Microscopic bacteria

Indian genomic data: In an important development, Delhi-based Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) completed whole genome sequencing of 1008 Indian individuals representing diverse ethnic groups in the country. The data will act as baseline information for developing various applications in predictive and preventive medicine.

Scientists from CCMB also found underlying genetic factors for infertility among Indian men. This knowledge could help in developing a genetic test for male infertility in near future. As part of genetic studies to trace the origins of population groups in the Indian sub-continent, it had been seen that sizeable population group of Mundas in central and northeast India shares genetic ancestry with Southeast Asian populations as well. A study revealed how and when this admixture between Mundas and Southeast Asian populations took place.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) launched a new human atlas initiative called Manav to develop a unified database of molecular network of all the tissues in the human body, and to derive a holistic picture of the working of human body. This mega project will collate and integrate molecular information on human tissues and organs that currently lies hidden in research articles in an unstructured and disorganized form.

Developments in gene editing: Indian scientists developed a new variant of currently popular gene editing tool, CRISPR-Cas9, and showed that it can increase precision in editing genome while avoiding unintended changes in DNA. The researchers showed that this type of gene editing can be used to correct sickle cell anemia, a genetic blood disorder. The experiments were done in human-derived cells from patients of sickle cell anemia, according to findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

New nano materials: Continuing their work in nano science and technology in 2019, scientists at the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) used gold nanoparticles, and by rearranging size and gaps between them, developed a new material with unique properties like capacity to absorb light and carbon dioxide. Gold does not have these properties, and therefore, the new material has been named black gold, dye to its black appearance.

Boosting rice productivity: Scientists at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) identified a gene involved in regulating the size of rice grain. The new development represents a new approach towards developing rice varieties that produce bigger and consequently heavier grains. Scientists from the Bose Institute came up with a new salt-tolerant transgenic rice plant by over-expressing a gene from a wild rice called Porteresia coarctata into the commonly used IR 64 indica rice variety.

Other important developments during the year included a new plan to establish a museum for marine archaeology at Lothal, a new satellite-based weather information service for deep sea fishers, grand challenge for cancer research to develop affordable cancer diagnostics and treatment, a white paper on e-cigarettes that led to its ban in India, and new initiative to boost malaria research in the country.

5 reasons to head to Chicago during the holidays – Minneapolis Star Tribune

Holiday revelers at Christkindlmarket in Chicago are getting the boot, and they couldnt be happier about it.

At this German-themed Christmas market in Daley Plaza, a jovial family wraps mittened hands around steaming boot-shaped mugs of hot chocolate and glhwein, a mulled red wine that emits an enticing aroma of cinnamon and cloves. Then, they raise them high, kicking off the holiday season with a clamorous toast.

Cheers!

Chicago is an action-packed, family-friendly city at any time of the year, but during the holidays, it transforms into a glittering urban landscape with enough activities to keep you busy for the Twelve Days of Christmas and beyond.

For many locals, purchasing a keepsake mug at Christkindlmarket is a Christmas tradition. The popular boot design hasnt been around since 2015, and collectors are celebrating its return.

German-born Maren Biester Priebe, CEO of German American Events, says there have been many different shapes over the years: beer steins, kettles and winter hats with pompoms, but the boot seems to have a special place in the hearts of Chicagoans.

Have a Christmas list longer than Santas beard? With dozens of vendors selling everything from cuckoo clocks to nutcrackers to handmade ornaments, youll zip through it faster than you can say, Bah, humbug.

Keep up your shopping stamina by nibbling on German holiday delicacies like marzipan and heart-shaped gingerbread cookies.

If youre lucky, you might just see Christkind herself, a fairylike being that, like Santa Claus, delivers Christmas gifts to good little boys and girls.

Christmas Around the World

What began at the Museum of Science and Industry during World War II with a single Christmas tree to show solidarity with the United Nations has grown into a virtual indoor forest of 50 trees representing holiday customs far and wide.

Families pose for photos in front of their favorites.

American kids are surprised to learn Dutch children dont hang their stockings from the chimney with care; they get their treats in the wooden shoes they leave out for Sinterklaas. He arrives, not by a reindeer-pulled sleigh, but on a snowy white horse. The tree representing the Netherlands is adorned with painted wooden shoes.

The Croatian tree, with its traditional red and white, heart-shaped cookie dough ornaments, looks like its covered in valentines.

Paper birds roost in the Welsh tree to represent the ancient tradition of hunting a wren, considered the king of birds. It was customary to carry the tiny bird in a cage during holiday visits.

The piece de resistance is the 45-foot-tall Grand Tree in the copper-domed rotunda where surprise snow showers delight visitors.

Holiday tea

Christmas carolers demand figgy pudding. And we wont go until we get some, so bring some out here!

Figgy pudding, whatever that is, is not forthcoming, but theres an array of other sweet treats, including a chocolate yule log, chocolate cranberry pound cake and plump domes of red velvet cake at high tea at the Lobby restaurant in the Peninsula Chicago.

Savory delights are plentiful, too, like smoked salmon sandwiches topped with caviar and flaky spiced vegetable tarts.

Children who enjoy hosting pretend tea parties for dolls and stuffed animals are wowed by the real thing: tea service in the glow of a sparkling Christmas tree.

Navy Pier

Baby, its cold outside, so Navy Pier brings the fun indoors with Winter WonderFest. In the summer, this amusement park on Lake Michigan is a hub of outdoor family entertainment, but when Jack Frost starts his nipping, it transforms into a wintry indoor playground.

Little ones hop aboard the Arctic Express Train Ride and travel through an enchanting holiday village, while older kids take a spin around the indoor skating rink or get on the Ferris wheel which is enclosed and heated for a birds-eye view of the action and the holiday lights.

Kids will leave with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads the Sugar Plum aerialists, that is. These audacious performers twirl at lightning-speed from ribbons suspended from the ceiling and hold seemingly impossible poses.

The Sugar Plum aerialists perform at 3, 4 and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays during the holiday season.

600 E. Grand Av.; Winter WonderFest runs through Jan. 12; navypier.org.

ZooLights

Know a little one who wants a pony for Christmas? Tell her it wont fit in Santas sleigh, and take her to the annual ZooLights event at Lincoln Park Zoo instead. A glowing, rainbow-hued tunnel is a portal to whimsical, illuminated sculptures of zoo animals.

Of course, there are real animals, too. Surrounded by giant rabbits, monkeys, giraffes and zebras, shell soon forget the pony.

ZooLights runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m. nightly through Jan. 5, excluding Dec. 24 and 25.

Five artists to watch in 2020: From Girl in Red to PVA – Evening Standard

Your guide to what's hot in London

With the decade drawing to a close, it's time to look forward to a new era of music.

Judging by the last 10 years, the 20s have a lot to live up to there's been some serious musical innovation, which sets a pretty daunting precedent for the next generation.

So, who will kickstart thisnew dawn? Here, weve picked out five young musicians set to do just that, and have particularly big years in 2020.

Check out a sample of their sound below, and be sure to keep an eye on them over the next 12 months.

Getty Images

Charli featured two of the best, if not the best pop songs of the year: Gone and 1999, featuring Christine and the Queens and Troye Sivan respectively. For those tracks alone, wed have been tempted to put this album on the list, but there was plenty more throughout the 13 other songs to warrant its inclusion. Charli XCXs astute taste for bangers was undiminished, but her experimentalism shone brighter here than on any of her previous releases a prime example being Click, surely inspired by avant-pop pioneer SOPHIE but packing in plenty of fresh intrigue. Her more intimate moments, exposed when she stepped away from the dancefloor, were painfully compelling, too: Hate myself, I really love you/ Hurting you feels like Im hurting as well,'' she lamented on White Mercedes.

Assume Form, James Blakes fourth and most accessible album, found the singer-songwriter in his most loved-up mood yet. The collection of knotty, wonky pop songs drew heavily on his relationship with actress and TV presenter Jameela Jamil, and songs like the title track spoke about their love as a rebirth, helping him see the world with fresh eyes (Going through the motions my whole life/ I hope this is the first day/ That I connect motion to feelings). His experiments with trap and hip hop influences on the likes of Mile High featuring Travis Scott and Tell Them were well done, with his talent as a producer and his expressive falsetto transcending genre. I Cant Believe the Way We Flow is as pure a love song as Blake will likely ever produce, and an incendiary turn from Andre 3000 on Wheres The Catch was a standout. But it was the elegant, haunting beauty of Dont Miss It which made the biggest impact, and formed arguably Blakes finest moment to date.

AFP via Getty Images

After making her name with gritty, lo-fi indie over the past decade, the Missouri singer-songwriter went big and bold on her fourth album, mixing scything guitars with crashing drums and an enormous-sounding 14-piece orchestra. Opening track Lark was stunning and in its scale, painful and hopeful in equal measure. If only we could start again, pretending that we dont know each other, she sung the track, and the record as a whole, was a new beginning in every sense, seeing her achieve something truly remarkable. Jherek Bischoffs orchestral arrangements added a grandiosity throughout and the title track dripped with poise and elegance, with Angels impassioned delivery adding a gritty edge. Its an ambitious and at times awe-inspiring work that furthers Olsens status as a searing talent.

On Lizzos breakthrough release, self-confidence wasnt so much a theme as a fundamental truth. That much was obvious from the first 10 seconds a flooring barrage of ground-shaking vocals and booming instrumentation. And it continued, with one-liner after one-liner. Only exes that I care about are in my f***ing chromosomes, she rapped on Like A Girl, and on Juice: I be drippin so much sauce/ Got a b**** lookin like ragu. That second song was the perfect encapsulation of Lizzos newfound glory: a carefree, self-loving slice of retro-futurist funk, with a voice sounding both like an old soul veteran and a hyper-modern star, belting out one of the catchiest choruses you'll have heard in 2019. Cuz I Love You was certainly the feel-good album of the year, and with the torrent of awfulness that seemed to dominate the news cycle, it was a most welcome tonic

Getty Images for iHeartMedia

Shouty men in loud bands are all the rage these days, but Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten drew power from restraint. On Dogrel, not once did his delivery lash out into anything close to a growl or bark. In fact, he barely seemed to even raise his voice, instead finding potency and, crucially, distinctiveness in his deadpan drawl. His pared-back style wasnt entirely matched by his bandmates. These songs, rooted largely in post-punk, were written in the pubs of Dublin, and it showed. Boys in the Better Land was a rowdy pint-flinger, while Dublin City Sky was a booze-soaked ballad. Chatten managed to find poetry among the haze The city in its final dress/ And now a gusty shower wraps the grimy scraps/ Of withered leaves all about your feet, he sang on album standout Too Real and there were quieter, more tender moments, like on the warmly downbeat Roys Tune. All of it, though, was bracing.

AFP via Getty Images

We waited a long while for Magdalene ever since FKA Twigs became one of the most hyped names in the business after her 2014 breakthrough LP1, in fact. Were glad she took her time. The album was a triumph of heartbreak, fractured love and rebirth, so candid and piercingly intimate. The singer, real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett, drew heavily on her break-up from actor Robert Pattinson, and the sorrow was palpable on tracks like Thousand Eyes (If I walk out the door, it starts our last goodbye/ If you don't pull me back it wakes a thousand eyes). Cellophane, though, was the heart of the album, the sparse ballad marking one of the most astonishingly emotional tracks of the year. Didn't I do it for you? Why don't I do it for you? she lamented. It was incredibly moving, and the highlight of an extraordinarily powerful release.

GREY Area felt like it had been a long time coming for Little Simz. As an artist, she had remained unrushed, releasing a string of EPs before her debut album in 2015, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons. It never felt like she was treading water, though. Instead, the Islington rapper had been patiently honing her craft, experimenting and making plans. On GREY Area, those plans were realised with startling clarity. Her flow was malleable but meticulous, with lyrics that bristled with honesty (most potently, perhaps, on the song Venom, when she offered another theory on why it had taken her this long to get the recognition she deserves: They would never wanna admit I'm the best here/ From the mere fact that I've got ovaries). The genre-melding music was refreshingly organic, too, recorded largely using live instruments, slinking from booming hip-hop to slick funk. This might have been Little Simzs third and best album, but you know shes only just getting started.

In 2019, Dave the confirmed his status as one of the pre-eminent voices in UK rap at the age of just 21. Hes made his name in singles in the past, but Psychodrama was one of the most coherent and conceptual albums of the past 12 months, presented with skits between tracks, taking the form of a therapy session. The album tackled everything from mental health to abuse and prison reform, and Black which focuses fervently on struggles and stigmas facing black Britons was the kind of impassioned, chest-bursting state-of-the-nation address that leaves you speechless (Black is pain, black is joy, black is evident/ It's working twice as hard as the people you know you're better than). Streatham found him on confessional and candid form, while Burna Boy collaboration Location is one of the most club-friendly tracks of the year. It was an album that played fast and loose with genre, mixing grime, dancehall and more to encapsulate perfectly where Londons music scene was headed.

Explicit and exquisite, Norman F***ing Rockwell saw Lana Del Rey produce her finest work which is saying something after the excellent string of Ultraviolence, Honeymoon and Lust for Life. It marked something of a departure from her previous work, which has often been about creating immersive, evocative pieces, with plush production and taught musicality. On Norman F***ing Rockwell, most of the tracks were laid bare with piano and minimal strings and guitar work. The album was co-written with producer Jack Antanoff, who also had a hand in a number of tracks on Taylor Swifts Lover, and together the pair kept things refreshingly uncluttered. It allowed her incredible voice to come to the fore more than ever before, with the singer putting more trust in her delivery and reaping the rewards. The likes of Bartender and the woozy title track evoked Joni Mitchell and stalwarts of other American folk rock. No-one has been this eloquent or expressive about American iconography for years.

This was Richard Dawson's most accessible album. But the unprecedented catchiness of his hooks allowed them to dig deeper beneath the skin. They told stories of workers toiling in a fulfilment centre, the homeless person who gets a kicking while wrapped up in a sleeping bag, or the distraught civil servant who doesnt have the heart to explain to another poor soul why it is their Disability Living Allowance will be stopping shortly. It painted a damning portrait of this country and, were it not for the warmth of Dawson's songwriting, 2020 may well have been unbearable. But it was his extraordinary empathy that kept us going. The truth of it all was inescapable. Many of Dawsons musical edges remained sharp, and largely unpredictable, which mirrored the anxious instability of our times. There were fleeting moments of hope, like the closing minute-or-so of Jogging, which bordered on ecstatic. By and large, though, this was the perfect soundtrack to the year: brilliantly awful.

Speedy Wunderground, the astute label helmed by Dan Carey, is proving that groups of musicians with guitars can be genuinely innovative again. Black Midi are the most famous signees especially after that unhinged performance on national telly at the Mercury Prize ceremony but 2020 looks like it might be a huge year for one of their labelmates: Black Country, New Round. The lead vocalist, Isaac Wood, delivers enigmatic sprawls and sounds either like a deadpan narrator or a teetering madman. The rest of the band serve considered cacophonies, inspired by klezmer, post-punk and more. Only two songs have been formally released so far the next cant come soon enough.

Emerging as part of GAIKAs The Spectacular Empire collective, London-based artist Gloria has been turning heads with her futurist take on R&B. Her five-track EP, Testify, released earlier in 2019, is superb an icy blend of legacy and innovation, with deeply delivered vocals and avant-garde tendencies. Theres a hint of FKA Twigs to her style, both in sound and ambition, so 2020 looks like it could be a special year for Gloria.

Arlo Parks, the 19-year-old from Hammersmith, first came to attention back in 2018 with the release of Cola. Since then, shes been drip-feeding us with a stream of singles and EPs, gradually adding layers to her sound, which weaves in lo-fi bedroom pop, emo, spoken word, R&B and more. She was named on the BBC Sounds of 2020 shortlist, which can either be a blessing (ask Ellie Goulding, winner in 2010) or a curse (ask The Bravery, winners in 2005). Judging by her output so far, shes erring towards the former.

Yet another band signed to Speedy Wunderground, PVA have been generating hype on the live scene throughout 2019. They only have a couple of songs online, which has been a conscious decision from the three-piece go to see them live if you want the real experience. Their sound is still evolving, with 80s synth pop influences mingling alongside art-school cool, but its all designed to get people sweaty and moving, and sounds thrillingly fresh.

As is often the way with cult heroes who emerge into the mainstream from the online realm, Norways Girl In Red already has a formidable fanbase the 20-year-old has more than 130 million combined streams on her four most popular tracks on Spotify. Its not hard to see why shes struck such a chord, with dreamily melancholic indie pop that instantly speaks to all the fervent, melancholy emotions of adolescence. With songs like I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend, shes already been heralded as an LGBTQ+ icon for the next generation.

Look At 10 Mustang Modifications That Leave Us Scratching Our Heads (10 That Are Awesome) – TheThings

The Ford Mustang is the most popular sports car in America and, as such, its also one of the most frequently modified cars. But not every modification is created equal. This article was written to show why we trust the professionals to do our modding. Dont try to install a body wrap yourself, for instance. Itll come out bad, people will make fun of you, and youll ruin a perfectly good vehicle.

SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, is a show that exhibits some of the coolest cars and mods of the year. For four years in a row, from 2012 to 2015, the Ford Mustang won the hottest car of the year. Some of the best Mustang mods were showcased (a few of which well show here).

Others are just plain head-scratchers. Why would someone tarnish a perfectly good sports car? Well, youll have to ask the modifiers themselves. Here are 10 Mustang mods that make us scratch our head, and 10 that are awesome.

Whoever decided this was a good idea should surely not be allowed to modify any other cars in their life. This rainbow Mustang, or painbow, as one user called it on Reddit, is a horned horror of a first-generation muscle car, and it somehow manages to take all the pony and muscle out of the car.

While the paintjob is definitely expertly done, it just looks tacky and overly flowery. For an aggressive car like the big-block-engined Stang, this is a fail.

This Mustang was modded and advertised by MGP Caliper Covers, who really know how to decorate a car and spiff it out. The caliper covers prevent brake heat and reduce brake dust, as well as adding color and style behind the wheel. These mods are definitely a nice addition to any Stang, and if this Metallic Gray one is any indication, itll liven up your ride.

This is another perfect example of a modified car that just went too far. Whoever worked on this one didnt care how over-the-top they were going, and the result is one of the try-hardest Stangs weve ever seen.

As CarThrottle.com put it, Would you like some rice with that Mustang, because the attempt to make it into a race car while its really just a ricer (poser) is unquestionably bad.

This crazy looking Mustang takes neon colors to a whole new level. Its not only awesome looking, but it was built by Microsoft and packed with a Windows 8 touchscreen, Kinect sensors, and an Xbox 360.

West Coast Customs help put the whole thing together, and theyve called it the Microstang. Its a 2012 Mustang retrofitted with Dynacoms 1967 Fastback replica body, with a rear windshield projector screen, and an augmented reality front windshield! Truly a work of art.

This particular neon green Mustang is featured on many worst of lists, including this one. Not only is it downright ugly and offensive, but who decided that that Flubber green was the winning color? And the ridiculously oversized wheels just make it even worse. If anyone sees you getting out of this car, they will never take you seriously youll be seen as a joke forever; just a fair warning.

This Mustang is only available in the Indian market with a 5.0-liter V8 and a Stage 2 Procharger upgrade that increases the power. It has GT350 fenders, a Boogie Racing differential, Stage 2 Steeda suspension kit, Roush exhaust system, and Roush X pipes that increase performance while adding a throaty exhaust note. The GT350R spoiler gives it an aggressive but practical stance.

Other modifications include a Cervini hood, RTR race diffuser, and 20-inch Ferrari FR1 rims.

Many people have tried to take the chassis of one car and cram it onto the chassis of another, but this one takes that idea to the worst level possible. Its supposed to be a mixture of a Ford Mustang and a Ford Ranger. TheRanger on the back, Mustang on the front just looks horrible.

Trucks arent supposed to have rounded fronts like a Fox-body Mustang (which is already the ugliest body shape of the Mustang family).

At the 2015 SEMA show, the Ford Mustang was named the hottest car for the fourth year in a row. Ford showcased no less than eight crazy Ford mods, including this aftermarket enhanced police demon.

You definitely wouldnt want to see red and blue lights flashing behind you if the officer was driving this bad boy. Every Mustang was sweet looking, but this one holds a particular interest because of its front pit-maneuvering fender, and its coloration.

Heres another person who totally messed up their Fox-body Mustang, and for no good reason. This is another example of a ricer that has been called one of the worst modifications for a Stang by VWVortex.com, Reddit, and more. Besides the terrible, ill-fitting body kit, the paint job is bad, the rims look snotty, and its just trying to hard to be something its not (a race car).

This was another modded Mustang showcased at 2015 SEMA, and it almost looks unrecognizable from a stock Stang. Thats because, as you can see by all the words on the door, this car was sponsored and endorsed by some of the biggest names in aftermarket parts, including Toyo Tires, Corsa, Airlift and more. Those gold wheels on a white body look spectacular, and the slightly raised hood gives the car an ominous appearance.

This ugly Ford Mustang is probably a joke car if the wrapped felt cobra doll around the spoiler is any indication, but it still shouldnt be allowed on the road. The problem here is that even though it may be a 1997 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (as the license plate boasts), it still isnt something that needs to be advertised in such a childish way.

Get rid of the little snake decals and just run this thing on the track like its meant to be driven.

This crazy modded car, dubbed the Mustang GT Eagle Squadron, is a one-off model that celebrates the Royal Air Forces centenary, back in 2018. It was unveiled at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Eagle Squadron was a group of volunteer pilots who flew combat missions alongside the RAF prior to the USs official entry into WWII. The Stang features a carbon-fiber widebody kit from RTR, an illuminated grille frame, front chin spoiler, Gurney lip for the rear spoiler, and a number of diffusers and splitters.

All right, at a certain point, you just need to know when to throw in the towel and throw the whole Mustang away. Thats what this owner needs to do. This disgustingly ugly abomination is actually a Stang underneath all that graffiti and ill-fitting plastic. What is that popping out of the hood, an industrial fan?

Hopefully this thing is headed directly for the scrapyard, because it doesnt belong anywhere else.

This Mustang was bought in Japan and fitted with the Performance Pack, and painted in Guard Metallic Gray. Its definitely a racer, and we like it because its not overly gaudy, but still looks cool and fast. It was built a piece at a time with aftermarket wheels, tires, and more.

This is a S550 Mustang GT, and its sure to put a smile on your face unless youre driving alongside it and the sun reflects in your eyes from its metallic paintjob.

In true Murica fashion, the owner of this Mustang has opted to paint their car in the style of the American flag. Now, theres nothing wrong with being proud of where youre from, but this might be taking it a bit too far.

Granted, the paint job is at least well done, but its an abrasive act. You dont need to beat anyone over the head with how American you are we get it. But the owner of this Stang felt the need, and here we have it.

As far as Mustangs go, it doesnt get much better than the 1966 Coupe. This modified, first-generation Stang is truly remarkable looking. Its golden paintjob is sure to turn heads, its wheels look sweet, and it was actually bought to tow a 24-foot speed boat, thanks to its big-block engine.

Australian Rob Di Masullo, a 44-year-old, detailed and modified this 66 Coupe, and has had it for 18 years, though its only been in a state of completion for the last three.

Were not even sure what half the things on this car are supposed to be, or what theyre used forwe just know they all have the name Ford or Mustang on them. It looks like the car is covered in painted cardboard.

Even without the strange, off-putting signs designating that this in fact a Ford Mustang, it still has a horrible paint job. And the little wheel covers are blasphemous, as well as a spoiler that looks like its angled the wrong direction.

Usually trippy colors and overly attention-seeking paint jobs arent too thrilling to look at. Theyre too gaudy and annoying. But this rose gold-wrapped Mustang manages to look regal and important without being too self-indulgent. Its not too shiny, and it doesnt look like a bling object that a Saudi Arabian prince would own its tastefully wrapped and looks extremely classy. But its also a head-turner at the same time.

Finally, we get this newish Mustang that is exhibit A when describing when someone is trying too hard to impress. The best modifications on a car are the ones that are tastefully done sometimes you cant even see them.

This gaudy, heavy piece of machinery is an embarrassment to the Mustang name. It looks like it belongs to Vin Diesel in the Fast and the Furious, but that would be an insult to Diesel. So, really, it just belongs in the junkyard.

This wonderful Mustang, dubbed White Beauty by the people who worked on it, is a work of art. With its red Rohanna wheels and its white wrap that takes away all semblance of a stock Mustang, its truly amazing looking.

Now, yes, it might look like something will.i.am would work on a futuristic version of the Mustang and many might think its over-the-top, but there are much worse examples of badge-less, white-on-red Mustangs out there.

The internet moved on from her red Jeep’s viral Hurricane Dorian moment. She didn’t. – Greenville News

The world knew beforeBrittany Feliciano.

Feliciano was upstairs in her Myrtle Beach home.Like so many others watching for Hurricane Dorians arrival Sept. 5,all she had to do that day was wait and worry.

So, she moldedPlay-Doh forher newborn.

She watchedhim. The Weather Channel. Her Facebook feed.

Thenafriend from Charleston messaged Feliciano with a question, and the answer to it would change the course of Feliciano's day, week and coming months.

There's a red Jeep Cherokee on the beach, the messageread. Could it be hers?

By thatpoint, the sensational image of a Jeep stranded in the waves already belonged tosocial media stand-ups.

In the coming hours, it would launch a series of #DorianJeep memes, with the abandoned SUV photoshopped into sea scenes from"Castaway," "Titanic" and "The Little Mermaid." It made headlines in The New York Times and CNN. The Twitter feeds of the likes of Good Morning America's Ginger Zee.

That all added up to anofficial, searchable nickname Myrtle Beach Jeep.

Related: A Jeep got stuck on Myrtle Beach before Hurricane Dorian. Then the internet got ahold of it.

More: Someone in Myrtle Beach drove a Jeep into the ocean before the storm. Hurricane Dorian didn't want it.

The not-yet-famous also got in on the gag. Someone shot video of a man appearing to meditate on the roof of the 2014 vehicle with waves crashing around him. Another clip featured a different man playing "Amazing Grace" and "Taps" on the bagpipes during low tide.

Musician Stan James Gregory said he wanted to see the internet-famous Jeep in Myrtle Beach on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. His wife, Paula, got a photo for his website.(Photo: KEN RUINARD / GANNETT USA TODAY NETWORK)

Thousands tuned into#JeepWatch2019, a live feed set up by a local TV station.

It became a sort of mascot for Hurricane Dorian'sU.S. landfall. Myrtle Beach Jeepwas a distraction from the destruction and comic relief from the harrowingforecasts that gripped coastal communities for days in September.

Dorian was the second-most-powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic. In its slow march toward the U.S., it ravaged the Bahamas for days, killing at least 61 people and flattening miles ofneighborhoods.

Now, at the close of adecade defined by social media sensations, Myrtle BeachJeep joined the ranks of other viral stars of the recent past: apregnant giraffe named April, a watermelon squeezed by rubber bands, thatWyoming intersection traffic camera.

Back on Sept. 5, the world wide web watched and waited as the waves rose and fell. Hurricane Dorian came and left, leaving just snapped leaves and toppled trashcans on Ocean Boulevard. By the next morning, the skies were clear, and the Myrtle Beach Police Department towed the Myrtle Beach Jeepaway.

The Internet moved on.Feliciano did not.

It was her Jeep, and she wanted this moment to mean something more.

About five minutes afterFeliciano read her friend's message, she heard a knock on the door.

It was a police officer. An officer on the doorstep was all she and her husband needed to see to know the Jeep going viral used to be parked at their house.

Felicianos husband's cousin was driving the Jeep.

Feliciano has four kids, so she opted for the familyminivan. The cousin needed a car, and they had one they weren't using. And the Felicianosare the kind of people who offer solutions to others people's problems.

The cousin isexactly the type of person who would end up driving toward the beach in a hurricane, Feliciano said. "He is literally the most adventurous."

He's that cousin.

He was trying to grab some video of the ocean before the storm hit and the sun rose, Feliciano said. When he turned around to head back, he hit a drainage wall. The carcouldn't move. But he could. So, he left to find help.

But he was in an evacuation zone. Businesses were closed. Services were limited.

When he returned, the bloated ocean was shaking andshiftingthe car weighing atleast 3,000 pounds as if it was agitated with the thing.

It was too late. The cousinleft without the car, and he didn't call the Felicianos to tell them what had just happened.

No charges were filed against the driver, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department. It is illegal to drive on the beach.

Feliciano is from Bladen County, near Wilmington, North Carolina. After Hurricane Florence flooded the region in 2018, she drove her minivan, packed with donations, back home. She's seen people she cares so much aboutlose so much to a natural disaster.

The day the Jeep left the beach, she and her husband, Nick, launched a GoFundMe aiming to pivot thespotlight toward the humanitarian crisis in the Bahamas. It raised a couple thousand forUNICEF USA to help with the disaster relief. The goal was $100,000.

"Anything is better than nothing," Feliciano said.

They earned another $50 from a celebrity appearance at the AutoFair at Charlotte Motorspeedway in October.

The couple, however, didn't give up on their belief that their loss couldhelp others who lost so much more.

Their insurance company totaled the Jeep, but the couple got a year grace period to use the car for charity drivesbefore it heads to its final destination, the salvage yard.

For the holiday season, the couple launched a Fill the Jeep event. They are seekingnon-perishable food items to donate to South Strand Helping Hand, a social services organization in Surfside Beach.

The Jeep is now back at theFeliciano house. They keep it cloaked in a cover.

In early December, the car looked a bit different than it did in those viral beach images. The Jeep was part of a float in a Christmas Parade in North Myrtle Beach, cast as a 2019 version of the Grinchs sled. It was like the Jeep wasphotoshopped into a scene from the animated classic.

A string of Christmas and silver tinsel garland lined the sides. The roof carried a redsack stuffed with the Grinch's loot.

Stacked presents concealed the damage on the front.

Opinion: Five players who should hang their heads in shame after Chelsea defeat – The Spurs Web

Tottenham Hotspur were dismal against Chelsea yesterday evening in North London, handing the Blues a simple 2-0 win.

Few players will escape criticism, but lets take a look at the five worst who should hang their heads in shame.

Heung-min Son

I cant say I think that Spurs were finding a way back into that game, but Son wiped any chance of that away with his silly red. This isnt the first time we have seen this from the winger either. The kick out was pretty tame, but still a red by the letter of the law and Son should be apologising to the fans for such a stupid action.

Eric Dier

Did absolutely nothing. Failed to shield the back line, his passing was woeful, he barely made a challenge, and he was subbed at half time for a reason. When will Jose give up on him?

Dele Alli

Didnt seem to be playing his normal position and just got lost among the Chelsea bodies. Couldnt find space and was poor on the ball the few times he did get it. The most lively we saw him was in a scrap where he looked as if he might do something silly and see red.

Harry Kane

Barely in the game all evening, and missed his one golden chance from a Sissoko assist. His touch was way off today, failed to compete much in the air, and didnt have any meaningful shots.

Paulo Gazzaniga

What on earth was he doing? Seemingly had to come out and catch or punch the ball, but tried to kick it, missed, and gave away a penalty at a hugely vital point of the match. Just as he was starting to play consistently well in a Spurs shirt too.

Anger as Ed Miliband heads Labour election inquest – The Week UK

A series of Labour figures have responded with anger and derision to the news that Ed Miliband will spearhead the review into why the party lost the general election.

Labour Together, which is running a cross-factional commission into the partys worst election showing since 1935, will assess what went wrong in the December poll.

The former party leader, who lost the 2015 general election, will be joined by Lucy Powell MP, his campaign manager for that unsuccessful bid.

It is just so poorly judged by Ed... people are frankly flabbergasted at the breathtaking arrogance of it all, one Labour source told The Times.

Another disclosed that a WhatsApp group of centrist Labour MPs had become pretty fruity when Milibands role was announced.

A shadow minister joined the chorus of disapproval, saying: The party simply doesnt need a post-mortem carried out by a self-nominated group consisting of a failed leader and his chief of staff who themselves have not given an adequate explanatory account of their lost election in 2015.

An unnamed Labour MP said: Those people who have appointed themselves to lead this so-called commission facilitated Corbynism, then enabled it and now want to sustain it.

Lord Adonis, a former Labour cabinet minister, said: The funniest proposition since the election is that Ed Miliband should lead a review into why it was lost for Labour.

Ben Bradshaw, Labour MP for Exeter since 1997, suggested on Twitter that it would be preferable for the reviews leader to have experience of actually winning a general election.

However, Powell responded said the criticism was nonsense. She told The Guardian that Miliband retained his Labour seat in the red wall as others fell to the Tories. She also argued that the former leader has been campaigning in the traditional heartland of Doncaster regularly for the past four years and has as much to offer as the next person.

Ron Paul: How Congress And The Federal Reserve Stole Christmas OpEd – Eurasia Review

The bickering over impeachment did not stop the president and Congress from coming together last week to avert a government shutdown by passing a 1.4 trillion dollar spending package.

The bipartisan agreement has something for everyone a 22 billion dollars increase to bring total spending on militarism to 738 billion dollars, and a 27 billion dollars increase to bring total spending on domestic programs to 632 billion dollars. It also imposes a national ban on selling tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under 21.

The agreement was split into two bills. Both bills were unveiled last Monday afternoon. The bills passed the House on Tuesday, so only the House leadership and the members of the Appropriations Committee (and their staffs) who helped write the over 2,000-page deal had any idea what was in the bills. But most members voted for the spending bills because they were fearful of backlash over another Christmastime government shutdown. House leadership simply waived the rule requiring that all legislation be available at least three days before being voted upon.

The modern practice of funding the government via gigantic omnibus bills that are rushed into law puts the growth of government on autopilot. This practice also gives the president more influence over the budget, violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the Constitutions grant of authority to Congress to appropriate funds, which was intended as a check on executive power.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve continues pumping billions into the repurchasing market. When the Fed began injecting money into the market in September, it said intervention was a temporary measure to address a short-term liquidity shortage. Three months later, the Fed is not only continuing to bail out the repurchasing market, it is preparing for other bailouts. This is further evidence that we are on the verge of another Fed-created economic crisis.

When the crisis hits, the best thing the Fed could do is not to lower interest rates below the levels set by the market. This would allow consumers, businesses, and government to liquidate their debt and restore a sound foundation for future growth. If the Fed did not interfere with the painful but necessary correction, it would only be a short time before a real economic boom commenced.

The Federal Reserve is unlikely to follow this path because of the short-term pain it would cause debt-ridden consumers and, more importantly, the pain it would cause politicians who would be forced to cut spending and/or raise taxes. But continuing to artificially lower interest rates will inevitably result in an economic crisis brought about by a rejection of the dollars world reserve currency status.

The Federal Reserves manipulation of interest rates depreciates the dollars value, enabling the growth of the welfare-warfare state while enriching the insiders who receive the new money before prices rise. The brunt of dollar depreciation is felt by middle- and working-class Americans whose paychecks do not keep up with the rising cost of living.

Inflation is nothing more than a hidden and regressive tax. Auditing and ending the Fed should thus be a top priority of those concerned about rising income inequality and poverty, as well as those dreaming of a Christmas free of 2,000-page omnibus spending bills.

McCain conservatives are rallying behind Justin Amash – Hot Air

On the surface, it may seem odd for a bunch of McCainites to be rallying behind a man who came to Congress heralded as the next Ron Paul. After all, it was only six-plus years ago that the curmudgeonly maverick lumped Amash with Ron Pauls senator son and Sen. Ted Cruz (RTexas) as wacko birds. (Bravo, Senator. You got us, Amash clapped back.)

But one of the features of our political moment is that anti-Trump activity on the right tends to emanate from two main camps: Libertarians (Amash, Judge Andrew Napolitano, etc.), and neoconservative-style interventionists (Bill Kristol, David Frum), with the second group being considerably larger. A third category, Mormons, is dispersed liberally within the other two.

So it was only a matter of time before the strange bedfellows collaborated more directly. And while its tempting to concoct theories for what these disparate groupings have in common that Trumps base does not, the grim reality for all is that they have been driven to the outer margins of the modern Republican Party.

Kick off the new year with one of these cruise holiday options – Livemint

The Caribbean still reigns supreme when it comes to cruising, but theres a whole new world to explore. Classic ports such as the Bahamas are recovering, new itineraries are opening up in Japan for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and luxury options abound in the Seychelles. Here are eight places to prioritize in 2020.

Japan

Remember when Olympic organizers in Rio de Janeiro slept on cruise ships and called them floating hotels"? Tokyo will do the same for its turn in the spotlight. From July 24 to Aug. 9, the city is chartering at least one large ship to serve as a floating hotel in response to a shortage of rooms on dry land. But youd be better off going a more traditional route: Two of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.s Shanghai-based ships, Spectrum of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas, will offer itineraries that overnight at Tokyos new terminal. Passengers with tickets can easily get to events and then sail on to other, less frenetic parts of the country.

Windstar Cruises LLC is betting that the summers television coverage will drum up tourism interest for Japan in general, so its skipping the marquee games and sending its 312-passenger, all-suite Star Breeze to the country for a series of temple- and garden-centric sailings this fall. But the most peaceful way to sail might be a three-night trip on Gunt, a 38-passenger design ship thats like a floating ryokan on the Seto Inland Sea, complete with traditional open-air onsen baths in some of its suites.

The trip were most likely to book: Star Breeze 10-night sailing, from $3,599 per person.

The Bahamas

Typically cruise lines have relied heavily on the Bahamas. Not only is Nassau, the capital, a frequent port of call, but several companies have organized sailings throughout the commonwealth around islands that they own. In the last year, however, the roles have changed. After Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama (also a cruise port) and the less-visited Abaco islands, cruise companies helped deliver recovery supplies and made major donations. In the storms aftermath, theyre helping revitalize the entire Bahamian tourism economy.

Royal Caribbean is opening the second phase of its $250 million Perfect Day at CocoCay island in January. The Coco Beach Club includes the first overwater floating cabanas in the region. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has boosted the offerings at its Great Stirrup Cay, a chic, South Beach-style beach oasis where you can shell out as much as $1,100 a day for a private, air-conditioned villa conveniently located near a Moet & Chandon bar. MSC Cruises recently opened, 95-acre Ocean Cay offers a more tranquil experience that focues on spa treatments and underwater activities in its protected marine reserve. And when adults-only Virgin Voyages debuts its first ship in March, every sailing will stop at a swanky private resortthink Ibiza or St-Tropezdeveloped by Resorts World Bimini.

The trip were most likely to book: A four-night itinerary on Virgins Scarlet Lady, from $2,750.

Kinsale, Ireland

Cruise lines are jumping on the DNA tourism trend, and harbor towns in West Cork, including the historic fishing town of Kinsale, are trying to get a piece of the pie. Promotional efforts have focused on attracting small expedition and boutique ships, and theyre paying off. Last year, French line Ponant sent one ship; this year its sending four. Ultraluxury line Seabourn has been sniffing around, too. Nearby attractions include a 3.7-mile trail around the ocean cliffs of the Old Head of Kinsale, where the Lusitania was sunk just offshore by a German U-boat in 1915. Theres also a star-shaped fort built by Charles II. And if you find through an ancestry search that youre related to the notorious 18th-century pirate Captain Anne Bonny, Kinsale is said to be where shes from.

The trip were most likely to book: A seven-night sailing from London to Portsmouth, from $3,830.

The Douro River, Portugal

Lisbon is a popular port, but attention has also shifted north to the quieter Portuguese city of Porto, famous for its sweet red fortified wine. Its also becoming a popular starting point for cruises on the Douro River. Hillsides covered in terraced vineyards and historic quintas reflect 2,000 years of winemaking in the valley, with itineraries that include stops for tastings and time to cross the border toward the medieval city of Salamanca in northwestern Spain. Luxury tour operator Tauck Inc. and luxury brand Uniworld River Cruises are each debuting ships in the spring: Uniworlds 100-passenger S.S. So Gabriel has butler-serviced suites, Douro-influenced decor, and locally sourced cuisine; Taucks 84-passenger MS Andorinha features an infinity-style pool, outdoor dining, and Balinese daybeds on the sun deck. Dinner at a family-owned wine estate near the sleepy village of Pinho is included.

The trip were most likely to book: One-week Tauck Villages and Vintages itinerary, from $4,190.

Raja Ampat Islands

Far from the fancy resorts in Baliin miles, scenery, and stylethis Indonesian archipelago occupies an enviable position in the center of the Coral Triangle. Cruises here lead to fascinating cultural encounters, but the big attraction is the warm sea, home to about 75% of known coral species and about half of all the worlds marine tropical fish. Typically the best way to see it all has been on small dive boats, but upscale expedition cruise ships from Ponant and Australian line Coral Expeditions have recently moved in. Joining them is Aqua Expeditions, best known for its top-notch Amazon River sailings. It transformed a naval vessel into its first ocean ship, the 15-suite yacht Aqua Blu, on which it offers a culinary program designed by Aussie superstar chef Benjamin Cross and sailings that stretch through the winter.

The trip were most likely to book: One week on Aqua Blu, from $7,525.

Subantarctic Islands

These islands in the Southern Ocean, which are on the way to Antarctica from Australia and New Zealand, are protected nature preserves, where only researchers live among birds and marine mammals. On Macquarie Island, beaches may be covered with royal penguins and fur seals. The island also has a weird geologic feature: Some of its shores are piled up with exposed green rocks from the Earths mantle that look eerily like theyre covered in snakeskin. And the Snares, one of several chains of New Zealand islands, feature crested penguins endemic to the islands. Cruise passengers visit on zodiacs that hug the shoreline or make a landing for guided walks, all in places where the number of visitors is tightly controlled. Get here on expedition ships from Silversea Cruise Holding Ltd. or Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, which have new itineraries traversing the region.

The trip were most likely to book: A two-week cruise round trip from Dunedin (on New Zealands South Island) on Silver Explorer, from $13,950.

The Seychelles

Luxurious options abound in this Indian Ocean paradise off of East Africa. Crystal Cruises 62-passenger superyacht, Crystal Esprit, has suites with butler service and a private submarine. Ponants 184-passenger Le Bougainville has a snazzy, underwater Blue Eye Lounge, somewhat like a submarine with a panoramic view and where you can get a martini. But the real beauty of sailing here is taking tiny zodiacs to islands with uninhabited beaches, where you may snorkel among coral reefs or wander past tortoises in lush forests. Keep an eye out for the Seychelles warbler and other native birds, as well as Valle de Mai, a rare palm forest little changed since prehistoric times.

The trip were most likely to book: A seven-night trip on Crystal Esprit, from $5,599.

Nile River

In January, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises launches the new 84-passenger, all-suite S.S. Sphinx, and because it will only sail in Egypt, its look will have an authentic sense of place. (Think Egyptian fabrics and artworks.) Similarly, Viking River Cruises in September adds the 82-passenger Viking Osiris, done up in Scandinavian design despite her Nubian name. Standard 12-day sailings on both ships start and end in Aswan, usually after a hotel stay in Cairo and a flight to Luxor. For DIY types, there are also four-night sailings to Aswan on Sanctuary Retreats elegant, recently upgraded, 64-passenger Sanctuary Nile Adventurer. Its shorter sailings arent packaged with pre- and post-cruise land experiences and are a little more flexible. This year, especially, a must-do is drinks on the terrace of Aswans Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie wrote parts of her 1937 novel Death on the Nile. Kenneth Branaghs film based on the book will debut in theaters in the fall.

The trip were most likely to book: Four nights on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, from $1,410.
