Stories!

An hour and a half of great stories by four of Americas most highly respected sportswriters verily, a Mount Rushmore: Alex Wolff, Bob Ryan, Jackie MacMullan, and Jack McCallum, all in one place at Middlebury College.

These four terrific writers have been intimately affiliated with either Sports Illustrated or the Boston Globe, publications of Biblical import and authority in my life and for many other American sports fans. To list their awards would take up much of this column space.

A few years back I was lucky enough to attend the Basketball Hall of Fame weekend festivities in Springfield, Mass. with my basketball-obsessed son, Peter, then 16. At the dinner in the Hall of Fame itself the night before the induction ceremony, our Cornwall neighbor Alex Wolff was being honored with the prestigious Curt Gowdy Media Award for his body of work over three decades.

At one point at the reception before dinner, I whispered to Pete, Turn around slowly, and he did, and there was Julius Erving, close enough to touch, Doctor J himself. That was the first hand Peter shook. We shook a lot of hands that wonderful night and conversed with some of the greatest players in the history of basketball.

For my part, I had a chance to meet and converse at this event in 2011 with Bob Ryan, Jackie MacMullan, and Jack McCallum. Just as Pete met many of his hoop heroes, I met mine.

For the second year in a row, Jack McCallum (Gowdy Award recipient in 2005) has taught in Middleburys Winter Term a sportswriting course, Sports Journalism in a Cultural Context. Jack was a senior writer at Sports Illustrated for 30 years and is the author of 13 books, including the enormously popular Dream Team: How Michael, Magic, Larry, Charles, and the Greatest Team of All Time Conquered the World and Changed the Game of Basketball Forever.

Jack invited his friends to come to Vermont to visit his class, and then sit on a public panel on Jan. 15. He was the perfect moderator for this discussion, asking just the right open-ended questions, offering his own experience as well. He revealed that he played on his small college (Muhlenberg) basketball team as a freshman, before retiring to intramural immortality.

Jack asked Alex about his experience at that small community college in New Jersey (Princeton). Alex explained that he didnt play on the team there, but he did write about it as a stringer for the Trenton Times, and described the thrill of seeing his name attached to a story, a byline, in the paper the very next day.

Alexs book Big Game, Small World (2002), an account of his world travels chasing absorbing basketball stories, is one of the great sports books, anthropological in its depth. His book on Barack Obama and basketball, The Audacity of Hoop, is delightful portrait of Obamas passion for hoops.

When Alex left Sports Illustrated after 36 years there as a senior writer and lead college basketball writer, he embarked upon a project unrelated to basketball: the striking story of his familys experience in Europe in World War II. He studied at the Middlebury summer language school in German, and with his family wife Vanessa, children Frank and Clare lived in Berlin for the year 2017-18. Berlin Reckoning will be published about this time next year.

Jackie MacMullan (Gowdy Award 2010) has the distinction of having played Division I basketball in college, at the University of New Hampshire. Jackie wrote for the Globe for 25 years and covered the NBA for Sports Illustrated for five years.

She spoke about the challenges of being one of the first women sportswriters with equal access as men to athletes in clubhouses and locker rooms and told the dramatic story of being confronted intimidatingly by an angry NBA player after a game.

She decided to let it go, a painful rite of passage, but she received a call that same night from NBA Commissioner David Stern, who pressed her to tell him the story. He told her she would receive an apology from the player who had abused her and she did the next day.

In introducing Bob Ryan (Gowdy Award 1997), Jack considered Bobs reputation as the consummate Bostonian for his 44 years writing sports for the Boston Globe (he still writes a column in the Sunday Globe). He noted that Bob actually grew up in New Jersey before attending Boston College.

BC guys, in my experience, are generally outgoing, boisterous, strongly opinionated, fun to be around thats the stereotype and pretty much applies to Bob Ryan, and his writing style. He pulls no punches.

Bob told us how he disliked being told by professional athletes that he didnt have a right to comment about their play because he never played the game. He fulminated, I played the game! I started as the point guard on my high school basketball team and scored 12 points a game!

Do pick up Ryans memoir, Scribe, My Life in Sports, an entertaining and perceptive account of his life as a Boston sportswriter, in truth, a Boston institution himself.

Both Jackie MacMullan and Bob Ryan have written books in collaboration with Larry Bird and they spoke about Larry with high regard. Bob asserted that Larry could control a game all by himself without scoring a basket, his game was that complete.

Jackie told of being taken in a car to a secret Larry Bird place when she was writing her book with him. Larry made her swear that she would never reveal where and what this place was. Then she told us all about it, though she made us promise, all 150 of us in the stuffed lecture hall in the science center, that we would never tell.

Im so grateful that Jack invited three of his pals in the business to meet with his class, here at Middlebury College two weeks ago. Alex lives here, but Jackie and Bob drove up from Boston: eight-hour round trip in the middle of winter, as Jack put it, for absolutely no compensation.

When I heard this panel was being put together on short notice, I said, Id pay $200 to go to that! (Of course, there was no charge it was an academic program.)

In retrospect, I was wrong Id pay more! A great night of sports talk.

The Good Place FINALLY Revealed (Yep, It’s Disappointing) – Screen Rant

After four seasons of misadventures, the characters on The Good Place finally made it to the titular paradise only to find it in as much disarray as the rest of the afterlife. Created by Michael Schur, The Good Place debuted on NBC back in 2016. The comedy series followed Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell) from shortly after her death. Realizing that she'd been seemingly placed in Heaven rather than Hell by mistake, Eleanor strove to become a person worthy of her new utopian home. As notable for its steady stream of twists and ever-shifting settings as its jokes, the show has garnered a massive amount of acclaim and awards recognition.

With The Good Place season 4 confirmed to be the show's last, the self-proclaimed Team Cockroach sought to save all of humanity. Having realized that the afterlife's points system was irrevocably broken, it was up to Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, Tahani, Janet, and Michael to figure out a better system; one that didn't involve The Judge erasing Earth and taking human existence back to the primordial soup. With the aid of a brief distraction from Justified's Timothy Olyphant, the gang successfully convinced The Judge to implement their idea. With billions of souls saved from eternal damnation, it was decided that Eleanor and her friends had finally earned a spot in The Good Place. Last seen traveling via balloon (for real, this time), the penultimate episode saw their official arrival marked by floating puppies and the ability to fully understand the meaning ofTwin Peaks.

Related: The Good Place's New Afterlife System Explained

As the gang threw themselves joyfully into their new surroundings, it rapidly became clear that something was amiss. At an amalgamated party honoring them, Chidi and Eleanor met Lisa Kudrow's Hypatia of Alexandria. Going by Patty, she revealed that everyone in The Good Place needed their help. A few stardust-infused milkshakes later, Patty conveyed the issues with immortality and infinite pleasures. While on paper having every need met was amazing, the fact it stretched on forever merely served to diminish all sense of thought and reduce everybody to what Eleanor called "happiness zombies." The point was hammered home by Jason Mendoza, who, having finally been given the chance to fulfill his lifelong dream of go-karting with monkeys, got bored quickly. Though some viewers likely didn't see a problem with eternal unvarying bliss, the concept (which is actually a trope of most immortality-themed stories) had provoked a sense of ennui within The Good Place. Even Janet and a cardboard cutout of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson were shocked and dismayed by the revelation.

Eager to avoid the same fate, the group fought to fix the problem. That responsibility only became more pronounced when Michael was tricked into becoming the leader of The Good Place. Despite the options of hoverboards and even waiting for Beyonce on the table, Eleanor instead devised a wholly different solution. After Michael suggested regularly erasing the resident's memories, so as to keep the experience new, Eleanor realized that remembering was, in fact, the key stating that vacations are only specialbecause they end. As such, they implemented a final destination beyond The Good Place a true death that would provide people (when ready) the opportunity for true peace.

The news was met with much fanfare from Good Place residents. The idea that the eternal vacation didn't actually have to be eternal eased the malaise and even reinvigorated Patty, who resolved to enjoy paradise a little longer before moving on. Meanwhile, in the wake of saving yet another aspect of the afterlife, Eleanor and Chidi, for the first time in centuries across multiple timelines, finally settled down to actually enjoy their time together. With Chidi declaring that The Good Place is actually just having enough time with your loved ones, it feels like the final philosophical stamp on the show's mantra. Given that, and the fact there remains one final episode, The Good Placehas set up what will surely be a truly bittersweet conclusion as the beloved characters inevitably build towards walking through those final doors into the great unknown.

Where N.H. Democrats And The 2020 Candidates Stand On Drug Crisis Policies – WBUR

New Hampshire is among the states hardest hit by the drug overdose crisis. So perhaps its no surprise that a majority of voters who plan to vote in the Democratic presidential primary support even the most controversial measures to keep people who use drugs alive and guide them to treatment rather than jail.

Take decriminalization. Pete Buttigieg has a long-standing plan to eliminate incarceration for drug possession. A spokeswoman for Joe Biden says that's the former vice president's position, as well. Andrew Yang has a similar position, for opioids, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms the latter because his campaigns cites there may be medical benefits. Bernie Sanders would eliminate criminal charges for marijuana and for buprenorphine, a less potent opioid used to treat addiction to stronger drugs. Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar and Elisabeth Warren would all decriminalize marijuana.

WBURs poll (topline/crosstabs), conducted by the MassINC Polling Group, found 66% of likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire agree with the idea of decriminalizing possession of small amounts of drugs. Some call possession a victimless crime. Others support decriminalization because they say poor drug users and minorities are disproportionately charged with drug crimes. Many respondents say decriminalizing drugs may help shift resources from incarceration to treatment.

The so-called war on drugs is a miserable failure, said Dave Berman from Rumney, N.H. Regulation, very much like alcohol, I think that would be much more responsible.

Removing criminal penalties for drug possession is one of five questions we asked of 426 voters between Jan. 17-21 about drug proposals. These questions represent a range of strategies proposed by Democratic hopefuls. New Hampshire voters who expect to cast a ballot in that primary expressed the strongest support, 89%, for requiring that insurers cover drug treatment.

Jody Baronian from Newton, N.H., said shes watched people in her personal and professional life struggle with addiction.

When that person is in that moment of wanting to seek help and theyre not able to get it, then weve lost an incredible opportunity, she said. The number one hindrance is finding an available place and the insurance.

A spokeswoman for Biden says he supports requiring all insurers to cover drug treatment. Sanders would guarantee treatment under his Medicare for All plan. Buttigieg would require coverage of medications that curb or block opioid cravings and other treatments for addiction. Amy Klobuchar and Warren both say treatment would be widely available under their respective $100 billion substance use plans.

The poll finds widespread support as well for filing criminal charges against drug companies and executives who allegedly fueled the opioid crisis with misleading or inaccurate claims about the risks of addiction. Thousands of communities across the country have filed civil suits against Purdue Pharma and other manufacturers.

Murali Thiyagarajah, from Concord, N.H., is among the 80% of likely primary voters who support criminal charges.

Absolutely, absolutely, he said. You can just pay the fine and go scot-free . We have to step up and say that you are criminally responsible.

Gabbards opioid addiction plan focuses on prosecuting pharmaceutical firms and other ways to curb their influence. Biden, Yang, Warren, Klobuchar and Sanders would also pursue criminal charges. Buttigieg calls for holding drug manufacturers accountable for deceptive marketing and other violations, but its not clear if he would press for criminal charges.

And finally, we asked New Hampshire Democratic primary voters about specific harm reduction strategies, which are illegal in many areas. Despite that, 70% of respondents support expanding needle exchanges. And 56% approve of supervised consumption sites, where nurses or doctors monitor drug use and step in when needed to prevent an overdose. But many of these voters have reservations about both.

People shouldnt go around reusing dirty needles, Jennifer Cadmus of Troy, N.H., said about needle exchange programs. They could get an infection and die but is that kind of enabling people? So, Im a little skeptical of how well it works, but I think it should happen.

On supervised consumption, Cadmus says if people can do it safely so they dont overdose, thats great, but again, is it enabling them?

Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg and Yang are all in favor of supervised consumption sites. They also support opening more syringe exchange programs, except for Yang, who hasnt taken a position.

We reached out to each of the campaigns. If their stance on any of the questions says "did not answer," thats because we're still waiting for that information from the campaign.

Some New Hampshire voters are surprised that the ongoing problem of drug overdoses and deaths is not getting much attention this election season.

It drives me insane, said Baronian, the Newton respondent. Were skirting the things that are impacting every single family in this country.

Public health leaders echo that frustration. Michael Botticelli, director of the Grayken Center for Addiction at Boston Medical Center, said hes encouraged that most candidates have reasonable, evidence-based plans, but the lack of attention to this issue is discouraging.

To not address it in a major way is just a deafening silence, he said.

There are lots of theories about why. In New Hampshire, opioid overdose deaths are on the decline, so there may be less urgency. But meth and cocaine use is up, making the drug crisis more complicated. Discussing solutions in sound bites may be more difficult.

Its not a pleasant conversation, it doesnt leave people with a very good feeling, said Baronian. So who wants to include that on their campaign trail and have those difficult complex conversations.

Other New Hampshire Democrats and some Independents say issues arent the priority right now.

Weve had this president for awhile," Cadmus said, "people are mainly focusing on whether someone is more electable than him."

Learning What We Always Knew: Corruption in Angola – Council on Foreign Relations

2020 is off to a rough start for Africas richest woman, Isabel dos Santos, the jet-setting daughter of former Angolan President Jos Eduardo dos Santos, who led his country for 38 years until being succeeded in 2017 by current President Joo Loureno. Ms. Dos Santos is at the center of the Luanda Leaks, a series of investigative reports developed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and informed by a voluminous amount of documentation that a Portuguese hackerprovided to the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa. The reports detail how Ms. Dos Santos used access to the states resources for private gain, including by transferring funds from state-owned enterprises to offshore private companies that she and her allies controlled. Angolan authorities have frozen her bank accounts, and last week the Angolan attorney general announced that she had been indicted for money laundering, mismanagement, and other economic crimes, largely committed during her tenure as head of the state-owned oil company Sonangol from June 2016 to November 2017.

In considering these reports, its worth remembering just how poor many Angolans areand how battered the infrastructure of the state remains 18 years after the end of the brutal civil war. Angolas human development indicators are distressing, from infant mortality to access to education to the overall portion of citizens living in poverty. 44% of Angolan citizens dont even have access to clean water. It is certainly not the case that grand corruption in Angola is a victimless crime.

In one sense, the Luanda Leaks are explosive. They provide an evidentiary basis for legal action, and pull back the curtain on the mechanics of looting the Angolan state and the network of enablers that benefited along the way. But at the same time, they are hardly breaking news. Angolan activists and journalists have pointed out the grotesque nature of corruption in the country for decades, often at great personal risk. In financial and political capitals around the world, no one who has any familiarity with Angola is genuinely surprised by these revelations.

Of course, one hopes that the fallout from the Luanda Leaks will deter others from using public positions of trust for private gain, and that it will shame those glossy international service providers who facilitated graft into a better faith effort at compliance and diligence. But it should also prompt some soul-searching in a wider circle. How is it that, collectively, people around the world had resigned themselves to the notion that stealing from the public was simply business as usual in Angola? What passed for world-weary sophistication was something much more insidiousan easy tolerance for injusticeand a cynicism that enrages the people who suffer while elites congratulate themselves for being in the know.

EDITORIAL: The moment of truth for Cory Gardner and Republicans arrives in the Trump impeachment trial – Sentinel Colorado

Sen. Cory Gardner and Gov. Jared Polis in Aurora. File Photo by Philip B. Poston/Sentinel Colorado

It takes little imagination to understand the quagmire President Donald Trump has dragged the Republican Party into, including Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner.

The consistent and compelling albeit sometimes circumstantial evidence against Trump leads to only one logical conclusion: Trump is guilty as charged in the House articles of impeachment.

The insistence that the case against Trump is flimsy or merely a partisan fabrication is an untenable lie. The House investigation methodically illustrates how Trump tried to extort the Ukranians into playing along with Trumps perilous scheme to undermine Joe Bidens presidential campaign. It takes little imagination to understand Trumps motivation because he sees Biden as the greatest Democratic threat to his re-election.

The case against the president in the scheme is clear that Trump tried, Trump got caught, and Trump ultimately failed.

Its not laughable that GOP U.S. Senators such as Joni Ernst of Iowa dismiss the serious allegations with their illogical banter. Its alarming.

The only compelling argument is whether Trumps misuse of his office and military aid to the Ukraine to undermine Biden warrants removal from office.

For us, and for most Americans, it does.

Aurora Congressman Jason Crow, a House manager trying the case now in the Senate, has offered a meticulous and convincing illustration of how Trumps crime was not academic nor victimless. The aid that a bi-partisan majority of Congress approved and Trump surreptitiously withheld meant life or death to thousands of Ukranian soldiers fighting Russian invaders. Fighting in sneakers and without armor, Ukranian fighters went without almost $300 million worth of equipment. Crow, himself a battle veteran, explained how even days, let alone weeks or months, mean the difference between life and death on the battlefield.

Just as important, if the Ukrainians fail to contain Russian invaders, and the battle spills into Europe, its easy to see how the lives of Americans and other allies will be in jeopardy.

Every reputable expert will detail the direct link from the result of the Ukraines war against the Russian invasion to the security of the United States and almost every American and NATO ally. Trumps choosing to use the Ukraine quagmire as an opportunity to undermine Biden created a dangerous threat to national security and the lives of American soldiers.

Those are the stakes Trump gambled with in his extensive effort to blackmail the Ukranians.

The non-partisan, investigative arm of Congress ruled that the Trump administration illegally withheld that military aid. Not even the presidents most ardent defenders have offered a believable explanation of Trumps behavior.

They cannot. The scheme was anathema to every standard of American values and leadership.

The nation and the world knows that if a Democratic president had done the same thing, Republicans would be howling for resignation or trials for treason, and rightfully so.

What the nation needs, and perhaps some Republicans in Congress, is to hear definitive proof, not just overwhelming evidence, of how Trump covertly manipulated the government to do his personal, political bidding.

Only additional evidence and sworn testimony can offer that now. And only Gardner and a smattering of Republican members of the Senate can realistically make that happen.

Gardner and a few other self-proclaimed moderate Republicans in the Senate can swing the inevitable vote to demanding critical witnesses address the jury of senators and answer questions.

Democrats deserve criticism that they should have waited for courts to decide whether the Trump administration should be allowed to stonewall the House investigation.

The Constitution is clear on the matter. They cant. Congress has every right to investigate the administration as a matter of its outlined duties.

The charges against Trump and the need to have a clear understanding of what the president did far outweigh the temptation for Republicans to punish Democrats for their impatience during the House investigation. In doing so, Republicans punish the nation and undermine the foundation of American government.

The Senate now has the right, and the responsibility, to bring former National Security Advisor Director John Bolton and other implicated and knowing White House officials before Congress to detail the truth or perjure themselves.

This is Gardners final opportunity to show his constituents in Colorado that he is willing and able to put the interests of the nation above those of Trump, the Republican Party and possibly, his own political future.

He has greatly disappointed all of Colorado when pressed to this test in the past. But the stakes have never been this high.

Either Gardner will help Democrats and others bring critical witnesses before the Senate or he will certainly forfeit his future in Congress. Doing the right thing and pressing for vital witness testimony wont guarantee Gardners re-election to his Senate seat this fall, but falling in line with the partisan ploy to protect Trump and cover up his crimes will undoubtedly ensure Gardners defeat.

Given the threats by the president against Gardner and others for disloyalty, its truly an unenviable position Gardner finds himself in.

This is what Gardner and the Republican Party, nationally and in Colorado, have become.

We appeal to Gardners professed sense of independence and virtue. Help the Senate compel witnesses and evidence that will either cement the House case against Trump, or disprove it, as Trump allies insist is possible.

Americans deserve to know all they can, and this may be their only opportunity.

#Overfishing – UK government waives rules to allow fishermen to rule the waves – EU Reporter – EU Reporter

The UK Fisheries Bill to be laid before parliament would make overfishing legal, a serious setback to the legal obligation to fish sustainably under EU law, warns Oceana.

The UK government has revoked the legal duty to fish sustainably, at Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) in the new Fisheries Bill, despite their claims to the contrary. Oceana fears that unless amended the Fisheries Bill will make overfishing legal in the UK. Despite repeated promises by the UK Government not to renege on EU environmental commitments, here they are clearly doing so.

Fishing at Maximum Sustainable Yields (MSY) allows governments to balance what we take out of the sea with replenishing stocks which results in more fish, more jobs, more money. By contrast, overfishing leads to fish stocks shrinking or at worst collapsing, as happened to North Sea cod last year, which puts both the socio-economic sustainability of fishing and fish supplies at risk.

At present in the North East Atlantic nearly 60% of commercial fish stocks are now fished sustainably, in line with the MSY, while 40% are still overfished. Post Brexit, the UK wants to increase quota for its UK fishermen, while the EU is determined to retain its existing quota in UK waters, meaning that there is an increased likelihood of overfishing of over 100 shared stocks. To prevent this negative trend, Oceana urges that the UK fisheries bill includes a legal duty to fish at MSY.

Not fishing at MSY will be bad for fish stocks and fishermen as well as our seas. Supermarkets also increasingly only want to source sustainable fish, so this move will also be frustrating for them and consumers will need to be increasingly wary about whether their plate of fish is sustainable.

Oceana Head of UK Policy Melissa Moore said: After all these years of working towards recovering fish stocks were very worried that overfishing may continue or even increase unless the Fisheries Bill is amended to provide a legal duty to fish sustainably.

Given the climate and ecological emergency, we should take even more care of our fish stocks to provide additional food security in the future, rather than allowing an increase in overfishing which threatens fish stocks and can cause them to collapse..

As Venezuela’s Mess Roils Madrid, It’s Time To Add Spain To The Reparations Roster – WLRN

COMMENTARY

Reparations are a big and valid debate today. Should the U.S. compensate African Americans for centuries of slavery? Should France pony up for the billions of dollars it extorted from Haiti in the 19thcentury?

Yes and yes, by the way. But recent events remind me we should add another historical world power to the reparations roster: Spain.

Spain owes Latin America not just big-time financial restitution for its more than three centuries of colonial rapacity, but something just as important:institution restitution.

Last weekend Spain found itself in the middle of Venezuelas gothic political crisis. Good, I thought: Venezuelas mess is the sort of implosion of democratic institutionality thats so chronic in Latin America largely because Spain left the continent with no democratic institutionality to speak of in exchange for all the gold and silver it took.

READ MORE: A Year On, Venezuela's Guaid Is Trying to Find His Mojo. A Bad Movie Might Help

Spain's squabble erupted after a top minister in the socialist government met with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodrguez at Madrid's international airport. Venezuelas regime is also socialist; but Spain like the U.S. and almost 60 other countries does not consider Rodrguezs boss, authoritarian President Nicols Maduro, to be Venezuelas legitimate head of state. It instead recognizes Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaid as the countrys interim president.

So Spains political opposition was angry that Rodrguez who like most top Venezuelan regime officials is barred from entering Spain under current E.U. sanctions got a cabinet-level meet-and-greet while Guaid, who visited Spain on Saturday, couldnt get a photo op with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Snchez. The question hanging over Madrid: Are Spains true sympathies with Guaids democracy-building plan, or with Maduros democracy-trashing plot?

The collapse of democratic institutionality is so chronic in Latin America because Spain left no real democratic institutionality there in exchange for all the gold and silver it took. It's time Madrid paid reparations: institution restitution.

Spain could put our minds at ease with reparations investing in a massive mission to help Latin American nations build the reliable democratic institutions that keep eluding them generation after generation. And if that elusion has eluded your notice, let's take a brief tour.

In Mexico, the countrys feeble, dysfunctional judicial system a showcase of the lawless legacy of Spanish conquistador rule looks as powerless as ever to do a damn thing about drug-cartel violence. Mexicos homicide rate hit a record high last year.

Yet that same judicial system this week is making one of Mexicos most respected human rights activists, Sergio Aguayo, pay 10 million pesos (half a million dollars) to former Coahuila state Gov. Humberto Moreira. Hed sued Aguayo for writing that Moreira had a corrupt stench." But theres just one egregious hole in the Mexican court's ruling: Aguayo wrote that in 2016 after Moreira was arrested in Spain for embezzlement and drug-money laundering!(Wednesday night Mexico's Supreme Court agreed to review the astonishing decision.)

Then travel to the Andes and South Americas poorest country, Bolivia where the Spanish empire extracted some 50,000 tons of silver but established squat in terms of constitutional governance. Bolivia looks set to trade a messianic left-wing nut for a messianic right-wing nut.

DEMAGOGUERY ADDICTION

Former leftist President Evo Morales, who ruled the country for 13 years, was recently forced into exile after getting Bolivias own laughable judiciary to aid his constitution-trashing scheme to rule for life. Who could now take his place? A racist Roman Catholic reactionary, interim President Jeanine Aez. Last Friday she broke her promise not to run in this years special presidential election because, like Evo, shes come to the savior's conclusion shes indispensable.

Should Aez win, it would just perpetuate Latin Americas political Groundhog Day. An incessant see-sawing between ideological extremes. An addiction to demagoguery instead of democracy thanks to the void of any historical tradition of the latter that Spain could have planted there. But didnt.

So why not call on todays Spain (and Portugal, vis--vis Brazil) to do its bit to redress this awful cycle to help develop stronger rule of law, bipartisan civics, effective tax collection and, most important, credible education?

Before the lefties scream about the U.S.s abuses in Latin America, which I wont deny, they should consider the region might not have been so vulnerable to los yanquis in the 20thcentury if los espaoles hadnt made it such a socio-economic basket case in the 16th-through-19thcenturies. And before the Iberophiles argue Spain invests billions in Latin America today, please remember the region is still home to some of the worlds worst inequality. Foreign direct investment alone doesnt fix that; fair and functioning institutions do.

If Spain wants to avoid future headaches like its current Venezuela imbroglio, it might consider what more much more it can do to help its former colonies build those institutions for once.

Education as a Tool for National Building and Social Transformation: The SPLM-IO Philosophy and Ideological Orientation – PaanLuel Wel Media Ltd -…

By Daniel Deng Mario, Khartoum, Sudan

Monday, January 27, 2020 (PW) The vision of the SPLM-IO is to promote the unity of South Sudanese. The SPLM-IO is aware of the fact that for South Sudan to achieve strong national unity, it must eliminate or combat racism, tribalism, political sectarianism, gender insensitivity, religious intolerance and all other forms of discrimination in the country. This is the reason Article 9 clause 9.2 imposes the duty on every member of the SPLM-IO to combat them. In the Preamble of our Constitution, it is our duty is to guide the people of South Sudan and ensure that we protect their hard won freedom, unity in diversity and dignified peace.

In the same Preamble, we acknowledge that people of South Sudan have struggled for generations to achieve their freedom and dignity against a backdrop of long history of conflicts, injustices, dictatorships, poverty, and violation of human rights and constitutional instability that was the hallmark of South Sudan. Thus, the philosophy of the SPLM-IO is to buildthe prosperous nation where citizens enjoy their freedom and unity in diversity which further imposes on us the duty to protect the interest of South Sudan both internally and externally.

In doing that the SPLM-IO is sure of building strong nation based on political social and economic equality. The Preamble of the Constitution of SPLM-IO acknowledges this by stating our Movement is inspired by the vision to build a new nation from which all political, social and economic disparities in the country are removed as enshrined in the SPLM Manifesto. This is the incentive and motivation to participate in leading and contributing effectively in State and Nation building.

The SPLM-IO in its philosophy or ideology is committed to building a better future for the people of South Sudan by establishing a federal democratic and developmental State with an equitable socio-economic and political order based on the principles of freedom, equality, democracy, justice, and respect for human rights, progress and prosperity. Through clause 3.8 of Article 3 the SPLM guarantees freedom of expression, circulation of useful ideas and information sharing within the Movement.

The above freedoms are to be achieved by implementing Article 5 in clause 5.13, which provides the National Policy of the SPLM-IO that is towards self-reliance and economic self-sufficiency and balanced urban-rural development. This is the meaning of taking towns to people not as the government understands it. In plain the SPLM-IO understands taking towns to people to mean taking services to people not the physical towns to people.

The SPLM-IO believes that Article 6 in clause 6.1 is the basis of its vision and goal which are to build a Country, based on a just, democratic, secular system of governance, and popular participation of its entire people. This can be done through creating national consciousness and common purpose through the liberation of the individual and society from all forms of political, economic and social constraints (clause 6.2).

In creating national consciousness and common purpose through the liberation of the individual and society from all forms of political, economic and social constraints, the SPLM-IO looks at education as the major means of achieving it. In understanding of the SPLM-IO, education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.Hence, educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, however learners can also educate themselves (Dewey, John, Democracy and education, (1994)).

Based on the above definition of education, the SPLM-IO wants education in South Sudan to achieve its main purpose which is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. These are what constitute the quality education. The quality education is the concept that educational process that instils moral standards to create more civil and democratic societies. Quality education is also called values education, which promotes tolerance and understanding above and beyond our political, cultural and religious differences, putting special emphasis on the defense of human rights, the protection of ethnic minorities and the most vulnerable groups, and the conservation of the environment.

The SPLM-IO therefore believes in equality education policy and education in our understanding isnt the number of schools a country has nor is it determined by a big number of teachers in that country but it is education that enables people to develop all of their attributes and skills to achieve their potential as human beings and members of society. This makes theSPLM-IO believe that education is at the heart of both personal and community development; its mission is to enable each of us, without exception, to develop all our talents to the full and to realize our creative potential, including responsibility for our own lives and achievement of our personal aims.

The SPLM-IO believes in education that promotes the general wellbeing of the people, which is a tool of eradicating poverty and to attain Sustainable Development.Through education therefore, the SPLM-IO hopes to promote and encourage scientific research and adopt appropriate modern technologies. In that respect, education in understanding of the SPLM-IO is to ensure gender equality and promote socio-economic, cultural and political empowerment of women. This will help South Sudanese to realize and ensure economic self-sufficiency and self-reliance for the people.

The education that the SPLM-IO wants to promote is one that gives citizens duties to protect and preserve the environment, ensure sustainable utilization of natural resources and promote environmental sustainability. When the people are independent and educated, they can protect, uphold and promote the unity of the people of the Country. It is on this ground, the SPLM-IO wants to correct the defects or bad education the current government is promoting in the country.

The government of South Sudan is promoting education without any respect and values. It is better even for one to be without documents as those without documents are more favored by the system than those who duly attended classes and legally got the correct papers. Education in South Sudan is money oriented education which renders papers useless. This is explained by the fact that the type of education in South Sudan looks at education as a means of getting rich but not as a means of building the conduct and behavior of the learners.

It is the type of education that resembles education which one of the lecturers in a South African University one time commented on when he wrote an expressive message to his students at the doctorate, masters and bachelors level and placed it at the entrance of the college. That lecturer wrote thus

Collapsing any Nation does not require use of Atomic bombs or the use of Long range missiles. But it requires lowering the quality of Education and allowing cheating in the exams by the students. The patient dies in the hands of the doctor who passed his exams through cheating. And the buildings collapse in the hands of an engineer who passed his exams through cheating. And the money is lost in the hands of an accountant who passed his exams through cheating. And humanity dies in the hands of a religious scholar who passed his exams through cheating.

And justice is lost in the hands of a judge who passed his exams through cheating. And ignorance is rampant in the minds of children who are under the care of a teacher who passed exams through cheating. The collapse of education is the collapse of the Nation Shoddy laws are made by the politician who passed exams through cheating. Half or unverified information is given by the journalist who passed exams through cheating.

Unjustifiable/unpatriotic actions are supported by citizens who passed exams through cheating. Substandard works are done by the public/civil servant who passed exams through cheating. Half/subjective analysis is given by civil society organizations whose leaders passed exams through cheating. Uninspiring leadership is given by the leader who passed exams through cheating. Indeed, the collapse of Education is the collapse of the Nation.

The type of education South Sudan is promoting is one of the confused type which is exactly depicted in the description of education above. The education in our country encourages cheating. It is sad to find that majority of South Sudanese students want papers only just to use them as a means to get something and because of that they do not care about values of education that promotes nation building. As a matter of fact, many students from South Sudan within and abroad have been involved in forgeries and jumping of classes intentionally to finish earlier. For instance, if one was to go to the office of education attach in the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in the Republic of Uganda one may find thousands of forged documents and more are in different hands in office in South Sudan. This is bad for the nation building.

South Sudan has collapsed due to the type of education it is promoting. South Sudan is supposed to adopt education of a major tool in nation-building. Quality education helps inconstructing or structuring a national identity through the use of power of the state, which is used in guiding citizens in their education. This is only possible when nation ensures quality education. Education that encourages the university in diversity thataims at the unification of the people within the state so that the nation remains politically stable and viable in the long run. This is according to Harris Mylonas, Legitimate authority in modern national states is connected to popular rule, to majorities. Nation-building is the process through which these majorities are constructed.

In summary, the SPLM-IO wants to use education as a tool for national building and social transformation, which is the basis of its philosophy and ideological orientation. The SPLM-IO takes the initiative to develop the national South Sudanese community through government programs such as military conscription and national building through mass schooling. This involves the use of propaganda or major infrastructure development to foster social harmony and economic growth. The SPLM-IO wants to adopt the Columbia University political scientist Andreas Wimmer three factors tend to determine the success of nation-building over the long-run, which are: the early development of civil-society organizations, the rise of a state capable of providing public goods evenly across a territory, and the emergence of a shared medium of communication.

Kevin A. Lobo, Stryker Corporation - Chairman & CEO [2]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Stryker's Fourth Quarter Earnings Call. Joining me today are Glenn Boehnlein, Stryker's CFO; and Katherine Owen, VP of Strategy and Investor Relations. For today's call, I'll provide opening comments, followed by Katherine with an update on Mako. Glenn will then provide additional details regarding our quarterly results before we open the call to Q&A.

We finished 2019 on a particularly strong note, with Q4 organic sales growth of 8% despite notably difficult year-over-year comparisons. This performance helped propel full year organic revenue growth to 8.1%, topping the high end of our most recently raised target of 7.5% to 8%.

2019 marks the seventh consecutive year of delivering accelerating organic sales growth, which has consistently been at the high end of med tech. In 2013 and 2014, we grew in the 5s organically. '15 and '16, we grew in the 6s. And '17 and '18, it was in the 7s. Also, this past year marks our 40th consecutive year of sales growth since Stryker went public in 1979.

The performance in 2019 was balanced across divisions and geographies, reflecting the durability of our business model.

Turning to the results by our 3 segments. Q4 was led by over 12% organic sales growth for Neurotechnology and Spine, with our Neurotechnology businesses growing in the high teens. Orthopaedics posted a 7.3% organic sales increase in the quarter, powered by impressive double-digit growth in Knees. Our Orthopaedics performance continues to reflect meaningful share gains fueled by Mako and our 3D-printed implants. As Katherine will detail in her comments, Q4 delivered the strongest robot quarter since the launch of Mako. We finished the year with a healthy order book, demonstrating the commercial and clinical success of this highly differentiated technology. MedSurg was up roughly 7% organically in the quarter, as Endoscopy led the way, growing 10%. All other divisions achieved mid-single-digit gains despite challenging comparisons. MedSurg continues to be a strong and consistent grower year in and year out.

International organic growth was 7.6% in Q4 and, for the full year, matched the U.S. growth rate of 8.1%. Emerging markets led the way with strong double-digit gains in Q4 and the full year. While it has taken some time, 2019 was an excellent year in emerging markets, and we are well positioned to continue this momentum into the future. Europe once again registered full year organic sales gains in high single digits as we make progress towards achieving similar market share levels as we have in other developed market regions. This performance was well above the market and has significant runway as we continue to drive sales force specialization. Australia and New Zealand also had a strong Q4 across its portfolio.

In the past 7 years, we have strengthened our international businesses and have taken key steps to strengthen category leadership across our portfolio. The pending addition of Wright Medical later in 2020 will address our last meaningful category leadership gap: upper extremities.

We continue to make investments in our sales, marketing and R&D teams around the globe in order to support our goal of consistently growing at the high end of med tech. But with our focus on our Cost Transformation for Growth initiatives, we are also delivering leverage. Op margin expanded roughly 40 basis points in the year, which included absorbing approximately 30 bps of dilution related to acquisitions.

We exited 2019 with nearly $15 billion in global sales and have demonstrated the ability to continue to drive high growth despite our larger size. We have expanded our offering through internal investments and acquisitions and believe we are well positioned to achieve continued success for our customers, employees and shareholders. Looking at 2020, we are on track to continue to achieve strong organic sales growth and leveraged earnings.

In closing, the tremendous efforts of our 40,000 employees around the globe enabled us to once again achieve strong results and deliver on our promise to our customers and patients to make health care better.

With that, I will now turn the call over to Katherine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Katherine A. Owen, Stryker Corporation - VP of Strategy & IR [3]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks, Kevin. My update today will focus on Mako and the key data points that have allowed you to track our success in executing on our orthopaedic robotics strategy. In Q4, we sold 89 Mako robots globally versus 54 in the comparable quarter a year ago. This includes 63 in the U.S. in Q4. Globally, our installed base of robots is approximately 860, with close to 700 in the U.S. In January, we received Japanese approval for the Mako Partial Knee indication, adding to the indications for the Total Knee and Total Hip procedures. We now have 9 Mako robots in Japan and continue to believe this represents a significant market opportunity.

Looking at U.S. procedures. In Q4, Mako procedures increased nearly 50% to 36,600, bringing the full year total to over 114,000. Total Knee procedures posted a roughly 59% increase in Q4 to approximately 24,000, while full year Mako knee procedures increased roughly 66%, topping 75,000.

Demand for Mako is being driven by the myriad of unique benefits of our robotic technology, multiple reconstructive applications and the ability to perform a cementless knee. Mako SmartRobotics have enabled surgeons to achieve a "know more so as to cut less" approach to joint replacement, which is driving improved outcomes for patients. These capabilities are clearly helping to increase robotic utilization rates, which achieved strong double-digit growth, both year-over-year and sequentially. Lastly, it's worth noting that demand for our 3D printed cementless knees continued to climb, exiting the year at over 36% of our U.S. knee procedures. We also continue to see growing demand for the Mako hip application, underscored by over 40% growth in hip procedures on Mako in 2019.

Please note that going forward, we will no longer be providing quarterly Mako results. Since acquiring the company in early 2014, we have provided detailed Mako data for 23 consecutive quarters in order to allow investors to accurately track the performance of this differentiated robotic technology. As we are now 6 years since the acquisition and nearly 5 years since the initial launch of the Total Knee indication, we believe we have validated the strategic rationale and competitive advantage of Mako as witnessed by the roughly 600 basis points of U.S. knee market share that we have gained since 2013.

Going forward, we continue to expect to take meaningful market share in Knees, owing to Mako, along with our differentiated portfolio of knee products, including our 3D-printed implants. We will continue to report on a combined basis both manual and the Mako-implanted knees in our knee line, while robot sales will be reported in other orthopaedics to allow for accurate tracking of our Knee revenue. Looking at 2020, our Mako order book remains robust and supports our expectation for continued share gains in both Hips and Knees.

With that, I'll now turn the call over to Glenn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glenn S. Boehnlein, Stryker Corporation - VP & CFO [4]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks, Katherine. Today, I will focus my comments on our fourth quarter financial results and the related drivers. Our detailed financial results have been provided in today's press release.

Our organic sales growth was 8% in the quarter. As a reminder, this quarter included the same number of selling days as Q4 2018. Pricing in the quarter was unfavorable, 0.6% from the prior year, while foreign currency had an unfavorable 0.6% impact on sales. For the quarter, U.S. sales continue to demonstrate strong momentum with organic growth of 8.2%, reflecting solid performance across our portfolio. International sales grew 7.6% organically, which was balanced across our international regions. Organic sales growth for the year was 8.1%, which was slightly above our most recently raised full year guidance of 7.5% to 8%. U.S. international organic growth was also 8.1%. 2019 had one additional selling day compared to 2018. And for the year, price had an unfavorable impact of 0.9% on sales.

Our adjusted quarterly EPS of $2.49 increased 14.2% from the prior year, reflecting strong drop-through on sales growth combined with good operating expense control. Our fourth quarter EPS was negatively impacted by $0.02 from foreign currency, which was in line with our expectations. Our full year EPS was $8.26 with growth of 13%, reflecting strong sales growth and disciplined leverage.

Now I will provide some highlights around our segment performance. Orthopaedics delivered constant currency and organic growth of 7.3%, including organic growth of 7.2% in the U.S., highlighted by U.S. Knee growth of 10.5%. This performance reflects strong demand for our Mako TKA knee platform, 3D-printed products, Trident II hip implants and continued ramping of our T2 Alpha Nailing System. Internationally, Orthopaedics delivered organic growth of 7.6%, which reflects strong performance in Australia, Canada and Europe.

MedSurg continued to have strong growth across all businesses in the quarter with constant currency growth of 7.4% and organic gains of 6.8%, which included an 8% increase in the U.S. Instruments had U.S. organic sales growth of 4.1%, reflecting a strong prior year comparable. Full year U.S. organic growth for Instruments was 10.2%. In the quarter, sales growth was driven by gains in waste management, Steri-Shield and smoke evacuation. Endoscopy delivered U.S. organic sales growth of 15.4%. Endoscopy had strong performances across many product lines, highlighted by double-digit growth in its video products, including the 1688 camera and accessories, insufflator, suction/irrigation and booms and lights businesses. The Medical division had U.S. organic growth of 5.7%, reflecting solid performance in its bed, including services and stretcher businesses. Internationally, MedSurg had organic sales growth of 2.4%, reflecting strong comparables across most geographies.

Neurotechnology and Spine had constant currency growth of 18.2% and organic growth of 12.5% as K2M anniversaried during the quarter. This growth reflects strong performance within our Neurotech product lines. Our U.S. Neurotech business posted organic growth of 16.5% for the quarter driven by strong demand for our hemorrhagic, ischemic stroke and our neuro-powered instruments products, including Sonopet iQ. During the quarter, we continue to be ahead of our K2M cost integration plan and begin to see good momentum related to our sales integration efforts. For the quarter, we delivered an increase in sequential quarterly growth and on a full year pro forma basis delivered low single-digit increase across our combined worldwide Spine business. Internationally, Neurotechnology and Spine had organic growth of 16.6%. This performance was driven by strong demand in Europe and emerging markets.

Now I will focus on operating highlights in the fourth quarter. Our adjusted gross margin of 66.3% was favorably -- was favorable, approximately 60 basis points from the prior year quarter. Compared to the prior year quarter, gross margin expansion was favorably impacted by acquisitions and foreign exchange, which were partially offset by price and business mix. For the full year, our adjusted gross margin of 65.9% was unfavorable, approximately 20 basis points from the prior year. Compared to the prior year, gross margin expansion was favorably impacted by acquisitions, which were offset by price, foreign exchange and business mix.

Adjusted R&D spending was 5.6% of sales, which was 10 basis points lower than prior year quarter. For the full year, adjusted R&D spending was 6.1% of sales. Our adjusted SG&A was 32.3% of sales, which was favorable to the prior year quarter by 10 basis points. For the full year, our adjusted SG&A was 33.5% of sales, which was favorable to the prior year by approximately 40 basis points. For both the quarter and the year, this reflects continued focus on operating expense improvements through our Cost Transformation for Growth program, including key projects focused on indirect purchasing and shared services. This is offset by the negative impact of acquisitions and continued planned investments in other CTG program efforts like our ERP project.

In summary, for the quarter, our adjusted operating margin was 28.3% of sales, which was 80 basis points favorable to the prior year quarter. Our full year operating margin of 26.3% was up 40 basis points favorable from the prior year, delivering on our commitment of 30 to 50 basis points op margin expansion. Our operating margin primarily reflects good leverage and continued operational savings offset by investments and acquisitions, the latter of which had approximately 30 basis points negative impact for the year.

Jay Leno And Elon Musk Spotted Driving And Filming Tesla Cybertruck – Grand Tour Nation

Both Jay Leno and Elon Musk have been spotted driving around California in the newly revealed Tesla Cybertruck, sparking rumours that the new all-electric pickup truck will be making an appearance on Jay Lenos Garage before too long.

The Cybertruck made waves in the industry when it was revealed by CEO Elon Musk, especially after the awkward moment when on testing the bulletproof glass, a steel ball smashed the window. Of course, it was later revealed that thats exactly how it was supposed to work, but Elon was certainly taken aback.

Nowadays, Jay Leno is very interested in the future of all-electric motoring, and with the Tesla truck receiving plenty of clicks wherever its placed in a headline, its no surprise that the EV is taking the front seat on Lenos YouTube account / TV show. The duo was spotted driving the car near the SpaceX HQ in Hawthorne, California before it made its way to Crenshaw boulevard where it was being followed by a camera car. It was there where it obviously attracted plenty of attention. The Model Y was also seen at the shoot.

Jay Leno isnt a stranger to Tesla, getting a ride in the Roadster only last year with the designer, Franz von Holzhausen, present instead of Elon Musk. With Elon showing his face on this latest video, it should be a very interesting one indeed, especially if Jay is good enough to ask some probing questions about the timeline of the model before production.

Shes Taking on Elon Musk on Solar. And Winning. – The New York Times

How did you get the idea for Sunrun?

I was at school at the Stanford Graduate School for Business, and went to China for an internship. There was all this building happening in Shanghai, and I thought, Oh my gosh, we need to figure out how to build things more sustainably. When I went back to school, one of my classmates said, Oh, I have this friend who has this solar idea. And I was like, Yes. Love it.

Had you been interested in the environment before that?

Absolutely. Growing up in the woods and trees, I was a little bit of a naturalist. I love bird-watching, and my daughter and I do that every morning. We mark which birds we see. Its good to actually listen to the birds.

How did you get Sunrun off the ground?

My husband and I both wanted to be entrepreneurs, and we were just married, and were both in business school. There was a little bit of an agreement that whoever gets their company going first gets to do it, and then the other person has to support them. So we were both pursuing entrepreneurial ideas. When my classmate said solar, I was like, O.K., lets do it. And then my husband went back into private equity and supported us.

After Sunrun got up and running for a while, he left and started a company with a classmate, Tatcha. It was so stressful. There were times in 2013 when Sunrun wasnt profitable yet, and Tatcha was needing capital. And so before we really had any real assets to our name, we were taking the money we were making from Sunrun and investing it into Tatcha. So those were some stressful times, but we earned it. We came by it honestly.

With Sunrun, our idea was to target residential customers. I went through the Stanford database and used my cold-calling skills to call pretty much anybody I could find that had energy or utility experience. One hundred percent of people said it wouldnt work and gave me this dismissive message. Well, theres a lot of sophisticated people working on that stuff. Go home, little girl. Fast forward to today: We have almost 300,000 customers and $5 billion worth of solar.

What were your various roles at the company along the way?

Im still figuring it out. I wasnt originally the C.E.O.; my co-founder was. In the beginning, Id literally spend my weekends going to farmers markets and putting fliers on peoples windshields, and doing town hall meetings to explain how you can get solar. It was a hustle.

Over the years, it sort of evolved into what our roles would be. I had no ambition necessarily to be a C.E.O. I always thought I would be the chief of staff to the president or something. But I never aspired to be in the limelight.

I took out a loan with cryptocurrency and didn’t sign a thing – Mashable

Last week, I took out a loan without meeting anyone, signing anything, or even interacting with a human being.

I also invested in a variety of assets that earn interest of up to 5.9 percent a year. I did it all on my own, from my computer. All I needed was some cryptocurrency and a knowledge of how these systems work.

The amounts were tiny: The loan was $30, and I had $95 worth of crypto earning interest. But I could've easily done the same with much larger amounts, at those exact same terms.

To do all this, I was using freely available DeFi, or decentralized finance, services based on the Ethereum blockchain. DeFi is one of the key usages of Ethereum, which, besides being a cryptocurrency, is also a decentralized app platform where most of the currently available DeFi apps reside.

DeFi, in general, encompasses financial services which are transparent, decentralized, and trustless. Instead of having to go to a bank to get a loan, provide your ID and credit score, then have a human assess your situation and decide whether you can get the money, with DeFi it's all algorithmic. A smart contract, with an open-source code available to everyone to check, handles everything. All you need is to provide some ether or ETH the currency of Ethereum or another crypto asset as collateral and choose what you want to do. The smart contract takes care of the rest.

Like I said, all of these services are trustless and decentralized up to a degree. Some require you to create an account; with others, you don't even have to enter your email anywhere. Of course, rules apply: You cannot just lend thousands of dollars worth of crypto without any collateral.

It's been possible to do this for quite a while, thanks to startups such as Maker, Compound, Nexo, and others. But the process wasn't always simple for someone who doesn't know much about Ethereum and cryptocurrencies in general.

However, a new Ethereum mobile wallet called Argent removes nearly all the friction from DeFi literally anyone can use it with very little or no prior knowledge. Argent is currently in an invite-only beta, but it's fully functional, and everything I've done with it was real actual cryptocurrency was moved around and locked in smart contracts that provided the functionality described above.

Making a savings account in Argent is dead simple.

Image: stan schroeder/Argent/mashable

Let's say you're a complete newbie when it comes to cryptocurrencies. After installing Argent, which is a regular mobile app (I used the iOS version, but it's also available for Android), you have the option of adding funds via Apple Pay or Card, or a bank transfer, or you can send cryptocurrencies directly from a wallet or exchange. Going through an exchange may be cheaper, but adding funds with Apple Pay is the simpler option.

So you've bought some ETH (you can buy other coins, too, but let's stick to ETH, as it's the basis for the DeFi services covered in this text). Switch to the Finances tab, and you'll be presented with two options: One is Savings, which uses another service called Compound to invest your funds. There really isn't much more to it: You select one of the assets you own, in this case ETH, and Compound will lock it into a smart contract, which will immediately start giving you a return, calculated in real time.

My small portfolio is growing.

Image: stan schroeder/argent/Mashable

Not all assets carry an equal risk and reward, and not all are equally volatile. For ETH, you'll get a tiny, 0.02% yearly interest rate, and since the price of ETH can be very volatile, you should lock your ETH into this contract only if you plan on holding onto it regardless of price changes. On the other hand, DAI is a stablecoin whose value closely tracks with that of the dollar, making it far less volatile. It also currently yields a better return 5.88% annually at the time of writing so if your goal is to protect your principal in dollar terms and earn some money, it's a better option.

Taking out a loan uses a service called Maker, which isn't very easy on its own, but Argent simplifies that process, too. It lets you borrow a loan against collateral in ETH, to a certain point. Your collateral is locked in a smart contract, and will be returned to you when you pay off your loan plus interest (which, for me, was 9% annually).

Getting a loan in DAI requires you to lock some ETH as collateral into a smart contract.

Image: stan schroeder/argent/Mashable

To do this, all you need to do is play with a couple of sliders, which let you adjust your collateral and the amount of money you want to loan. However, you need to know that Maker contracts also include a liquidation price if the price of ETH falls below that price, your collateral will be liquidated to pay off the loan, together with a certain penalty. You don't want that to happen, so you should choose a safe loan-to-collateral ratio which is also clearly laid out in Argent's interface.

Note that this is different from getting a bank loan, which in some cases requires no collateral besides proof of good standing with your employer. But the advantage of decentralized finance is obvious: You can put your money to work, or take out a loan, without asking anyone for permission. Everything is taken care of algorithmically.

In theory, yes. In practice, I wouldn't trust any of these services with large amounts of money just yet. There are several reasons for this: There could be a bug in the smart contract's code that someone could exploit to steal your money. These contracts are often verified by experts, but bugs sometimes do go unnoticed. The volatility of cryptocurrencies ETH, for example, often loses or gains 5% in value in a single day is an issue, as well. Yes, you can use a stablecoin like DAI or USDC to avoid volatility, but in the case of an (unlikely) catastrophic ETH crash, even DAI could become unstable.

Also, note that my "portfolio," as described above, isn't the greatest. I'm paying a pretty high interest rate on my loan while at the same time receiving a paltry interest for my savings. But it was all done just to illustrate the potential of DeFi; I'd do it differently if I wanted to make the most of it.

All of the services I've used are on the Ethereum blockchain. There are a few on competing blockchains, like EOS and Tron, but the vast majority of DeFi services run on Ethereum.

Argent, which was used for this example, is just one of many cryptocurrency wallets you can use and definitely not the only option for DeFi. I've chosen it because it has a nice, clean interface, and it greatly simplifies the process of taking out a loan on Maker. For more options, check out this website.

DeFi is in a nascent stage. Some of these services, like Maker, have been around for years, but were (some still are) too complex even for techies, let alone people who aren't very tech-savvy.

But this is changing. Services like Compound and apps like Argent are making DeFi accessible to everyone. And while I'd always advise learning about how these services work in the background before investing even a cent of your money, the fact that DeFi is getting simpler means more people will get on board.

DeFi is also quickly spreading to cover far more complex financial products. Every week, I hear about new products or services, or even entire new classes of services. A few examples: A service called Rocket allows you to get a loan using collectibles as collateral; PoolTogether is a lottery in which you cannot lose, only win; and Synthetix offers digital assets tokens on the Ethereum blockchain that provide exposure to other assets, such as Tesla stock, or gold.

The examples I've given are just a small taste of what may come in the future.

Disclosure: The author of this text owns, or has recently owned, a number of cryptocurrencies, including BTC and ETH.

Cryptocurrency Taxes in the UK: What You Need to Know – Bitcoin… – Bitcoin Magazine

Tax season is here in the U.K. and its time crypto investors buckled down to file their cryptocurrency tax returns correctly. There have been a lot of indications that the U.K.s Her Majestys Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is starting to take a stern view of crypto tax evaders.

The first cryptocurrency guidance was released back in 2018 after a special report was submitted by the Cryptoassets Taskforce an initiative launched by the HMRC in collaboration with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Bank of England. These guidelines clarified some important details about how HMRC views cryptocurrencies, which many see as a prelude to a stricter approach toward crypto taxation.

HMRC also sent requests to some major crypto exchanges (including Coinbase) for information about their U.K.-based investors in August of 2019. This is exactly what the United States IRS did before they sent out warning letters to suspected crypto tax evaders.

All this is to say that HMRC looks to be fairly serious about crypto tax evasion which means that tax filings will become especially important this year. Here are some of the most important things you should know about crypto taxes in the U.K.

For all practical purposes, cryptocurrency is a digital currency. However, when it comes to taxation, HMRC looks at cryptocurrency as an asset. This means that disposal of crypto is subject to Capital Gains Tax. This categorization is being widely adopted by tax agencies; even the U.S.s IRS views cryptocurrency as property for tax purposes instead of a currency.

HMRC says that you need to pay capital gains tax on every disposal of cryptocurrency. Disposal here refers to the following:

Its important to keep in mind that charitable donations of crypto are not subject to capital gains tax. Of course, if the donation is tainted or if it the crypto is sold to the charity at a price greater than the acquisition cost, then capital gains tax will apply.

The actual capital gains tax to be paid will depend on your income tax bracket and the marginal tax rate. Keep in mind that there is an exemption limit of 11,700: If your gains are lower than this amount, you dont need to pay any capital gains tax. If you end up selling crypto which is more than four times the exemption limit (or over 46,800), you will still have to report the capital gains in your tax returns even if the actual gains are below the limit.

In the U.K., cryptocurrency gains are calculated using share pooling. Most people are familiar with accounting methods such as FIFO and LIFO when it comes to taxes. However, share pooling is quite different and involves using the average cost of all current assets to determine the cost of the assets being sold.

There are also additional rules like the same-day rule and the 30-day bed and breakfasting rule that are used to prevent tax loss harvesting or the practice of selling assets at a low price and rebuying it afterward to sustain taxable losses.

Crypto transactions also happen in other forms, for instance:

In each of the above cases, you will have to pay income tax and national insurance contributions. When you dispose of the assets, you will also have to pay capital gains tax in a similar manner as discussed before. It is important to separate the source of your crypto assets when preparing crypto taxes in the U.K. as HMRC has specifically classified hard-fork proceeds and airdrops as income.

If you trade cryptocurrencies as part of your business, then trading profits will be subject to income tax. This kind of trade is similar to trading in securities, shares and other financial instruments the HMRC Business Income Manual (BIM56800) deals with these transactions in detail.

HMRC recommends keeping detailed records of all your crypto transactions. Since even crypto-to-crypto trades are taxable, you will need to figure out the value of the crypto at the time of sale which could prove very time consuming if you are running bots.

Another thing to consider is that crypto exchanges dont always provide complete records, so its best to be proactive and keep a log of your trades. Nowadays, there are also tools such as Koinly, Cointracking, Lukka (formerly Libra), BitcoinTaxes and others that can help you with your record keeping for tax purposes.

Given that HMRC has made it a point to clarify regulations around crypto taxes and has also started asking for information about U.K.-based traders from crypto exchanges, its high time to get your affairs in order. If your crypto tax returns arent completely up-to-date, you should use this year to get things sorted even filing amended returns if you need to. The tax returns for the 20182019 tax year are due at the end of January!

49,999,995 XRP Sent to Bitstamp Is This Cryptocurrency Giant Behind the Curtain? – The Daily Hodl

A series of large XRP transfers have crypto traders on alert.

The single biggest transfer sent 49,999,995 XRP worth about $11.6 million to the Luxembourg-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp. The transfer triggered quite a stir, with many traders wondering if the XRP holder is planning to sell.

According to the crypto tracker Whale Alert, the XRP in question was sent from an unknown wallet. However, data from the XRP explorer Bithomp indicates the wallet was activated by the crypto custody giant BitGo.

Bitstamp and BitGo partnered back in October in a move designed to give Bitstamp a safe way to store its customers assets. The fact that the wallet was activated by BitGo suggests the transfer may be a routine shuffle of assets at Bitstamp.

The security of our customers funds is always our highest priority at Bitstamp. With BitGo Custody, Bitstamps assets will be secured on 100% cold storage technology in bank-grade class III vaults and protected by BitGos $100 million (USD) insurance policy.

Meanwhile, the XRP Ledger Monitor is tracking a series of additional million-dollar XRP transfers in the last 24 hours. At time of publishing, the most recent is a movement of 15,000,000 XRP worth $3.5 millionfrom the crypto exchange Binance to another wallet activated by BitGo.

In addition, the South Korean crypto exchange Coinone sent 20,519,000 XRP worth $4.8 million between two internal wallets, and Bitstamp sent 21,990,778 XRP worth $5.2 million between two of its internal wallets.

The payments company Ripple, which holds more than half of the total supply of XRP, recently moved 356,207,423 XRP worth $78.4 million in two separate transactions. Ripple sold significantly less XRP in the fourth quarter of last year, with the purpose of the two transfers in question unknown.

2019 saw more cryptocurrency hacks than any other year – ZDNet

Image: Chainalysis

In 2019, hackers have successfully breached 11 major cryptocurrency exchanges and have stolen more than $283 million worth of cryptocurrency, according to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

The 11 hacks represent the highest number of security breaches at cryptocurrency exchange portals recorded in a single year in the last decade, up from six incidents recorded in the previous year, in 2018.

However, despite a rise in the number of reported hacks, attackers didn't make the profits they expected, netting only $283 million. The number is far below the $875.5 million hackers made in 2018 from just six hacks, and the $483 million they made in 2014, from only three breaches.

According to Chainalysis, the sharp rise in the number of successful hacks can be attributed to attackers evolving to use more sophisticated methods for infiltrating cryptocurrency exchanges, which allowed them to carry out more hacks than before.

On the other hand, cryptocurrency exchanges didn't sit idly either. Chainalysis reports that many invested in improved security features and transaction verification systems, which, in turn, reduced the amount of funds hackers managed to steal before being detected and transactions reversed and funds recovered.

But when hacks are successful, Chainalysis reports that "the majority of funds stolen in exchange attacks end up being sent to other exchanges, where they're likely converted into cash."

However, Chainalysis also reports that "a substantial portion of funds sit unspent, sometimes for years."

"In those cases, there may still be an opportunity for law enforcement to seize the stolen funds," researchers say.

Chainalysis experts report that over the course of 2019, they traced more than $2.8 billion in Bitcoin that moved from known criminal entities to a few exchange portals, where they were quickly cashed out into fiat currency.

The $2.8 billion figure, besides funds hacked from cryptocurrency exchanges, also includes other types of illegal transactions, such as ransomware payments, funds from phishing operations, online scams, and funds associated with known criminal and terrorist groups.

Of these $2.8 billion, Chainalysis says that more than 50% of the funds were transferred to accounts on the Binance and Huobi exchange platforms -- two of the internet's largest cryptocurrency exchanges -- where crooks laundered the stolen coins into cash.

"Overall, just over 300,000 individual accounts at Binance and Huobi received Bitcoin from criminal sources in 2019," Chainalysis reported.

"That may come as a surprise given that Binance and Huobi are two of the largest exchanges operating, and are subject to KYC [Know Your Customer] regulations," experts added.

KYC regulations, which are in effect in almost all countries over the world, mandate that companies require customers to authenticate and verify their identities before doing business on their platforms.

However, Chainalysis reports that many criminal groups are skirting this requirement by using entities called OTC (Over The Counter) brokers.

OTC (Over The Counter) brokers are entitites that operate on classic exchange portals and act as intermediaries that can facilitate trades between buyers and sellers who don't want their identity or accunts associated with transactions on open blockchains.

"The problem, however, is that while most OTC brokers run a legitimate business, some of them specialize in providing money laundering services to criminals," the Chainalysis team says.

"OTC brokers typically have much lower KYC requirements than the exchanges they operate on," researchers added. "Many of them take advantage of this laxity and help criminals launder and cash out funds, usually first by exchanging Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies into Tether as a stable intermediary currency before they presumably cash out into fiat."

But tracking illegal transactions on public blockchains isn't an accurate science. Researchers need to discover and then track the blockchain addresses used today's secretive criminal and terrorist operations.

Of all illegal activities and transactions happening on public blockchains, ransomware payments are the easiest to track, as the ransom payment address is usually included in ransom notes that cyber-security firms can obtain from analyzing malware samples.

The Chainalysis team says that based on their data, in 2019, ransomware gangs received just over $6.6 million in ransom payments, "largely driven by an October surge in attacks carried out using the Bitpaymer, Ryuk, and Defray777 ransomware strains."

However, Chainalysis is the first one to admit that this number is "almost certainly an underestimate" and that ransomware gangs most likely earned a figure larger than the $6.6 million they managed to confirm and track.

More details on the blockchain ecosystem and the criminal underground will be available later this month when Chainalysis publishes its 2020 Crypto Crime Report.
