Victoria’s first year of euthanasia sees lives end in peace and devastation – Sydney Morning Herald

He died hours later after ingesting a cocktail of lethal drugs as Amazing Grace hummed softly in the background.

"The last thing I said to him was 'dad you go with so much love', Ms Scott said. "Dad replied 'and I dont want anything else'.

Mr Bareuther, meanwhile, left a note politely asking those who discovered his body not to waste any of their time on any silly theories of foul play before taking his own life alone in his shared public housing block in St Kilda.

He wrote letters to two of his neighbours, thanking them for being good friends. They were pushed under the door of one of the nearby units.

The 68-year-old, had been dying of inoperable pancreatic cancer, but was denied access to the states assisted dying laws.

His lonely death in September last year was described as a very sad tale by a Victorian coroner this week.

Keith English as an 18-year-old soldier

Fifty two people with a terminal illness have died using lethal medication sanctioned by the state government since Victorias voluntary assisted dying laws were enacted on June 19 last year.

The laws allow access to a lethal substance for terminally-ill adults who have only about six months to live, or no longer than 12 months for those with a neurodegenerative diagnosis, and who meet other strict eligibility criteria such as being able to give informed consent.

On the first anniversary of the introduction of voluntary assisted dying, doctors say while some terminally-ill Victorians are dying swift, peaceful deaths under the laws, others are being blocked due to red tape, or dying after being unable to find a doctor willing to help them.

Figures obtained by The Age show more than 300 applications have been lodged by terminally ill Victorians since the state's landmark euthanasia laws came into force last year.

While it remains unclear how many of those applications have been successful, the figure is more than double the 135 people who applied for permits and were deemed eligible between June 19 and December last year.

Mr Bareuther was deemed ineligible for the voluntary assisted dying laws because, despite having lived in Australia for about 40 years after moving from the UK,he never became a citizen or permanent resident - a key eligibility requirement.

Keith English and his daughter Marita Scott.

Coroner Phillip Byrne was moved by the case and has asked whether it was possible to introduce some level of discretion in the assessment process.

Although one can understand the rationale behind the denial of the [voluntary assisted dying] process to Mr Bareuther, I must say I have found it difficult not to feel sympathy for [his] plight, he said, in findings handed down this week.

The coroner stopped short of issuing a formal recommendation.

Euthanasia advocate Rodney Syme said tragically Mr Bareuther's inability to access the laws was not unique.

"If there was one thing I could change immediately about the laws, it would be getting rid of the clause which says you have to be an Australian citizen," he said. "Many people have lived in Australia for decades after moving here as migrants, they call Australia home. But they're being denied access because they don't have a piece of paper."

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said she was deeply saddened to learn of the circumstances of Mr Bareuthers death, and had sympathy for the situation.

However, she added that the states euthanasia scheme was the safest and most conservative model in the world and was developed after lengthy consultation and consideration to give people suffering with an incurable illness at the end of their lives another compassionate choice.

St Kilda GP Nick Carr has assisted 15 people with applications to access euthanasia. Most died with the lethal medication in hand, but without having used it.

By the time they come to someone like myself, theyve come to terms with the fact that they are going to die, said Dr Carr, who sits on the board of Dying With Dignity Victoria.

Mr Bareuther was Dr Carrs first patient to approach him about applying for the euthanasia drug.

He said like many terminally-ill patients he had seen, Mr Bareuther had been hugely relieved when he told him he could help coordinate his euthanasia application, and devastated when it emerged that he was not eligible.

He was an Australian in every sense but a technical one, a previous taxpayer, a current Centrelink recipient and on the electoral roll, Dr Carr wrote in his submission to the coroner.

I personally was immensely distressed when I heard that Julian had killed himself. Here was a lonely man, dying of a horrible cancer, who sought my legitimate help.

Among the many successful applications hes been involved in, Dr Carr has also seen upsetting cases where it has taken people too long to fulfil documentation requirements, or they have been unable to get a second doctor to assess them, amid an ongoing shortage of medical practitioners willing to be involved.

He recalled a case of a prostate cancer patient in terrible pain who did not want to die alone, but encountered a series of hold-ups with his application, including finding a doctor to give a consulting opinion.

He actually did die alone, exactly as he didnt want to.

Go Gentle Australia chief executive Kiki Paul said while Victoria's euthanasia laws were working as intended, some of the scheme's 68 safeguards were still creating barriers for eligible patients.

"There has been a relatively low number of doctors, particularly specialists, who have undertaken the mandatory training," Ms Paul said. "This has obvious ramifications for patients seeking a doctor who is qualified to guide them through the process. This reflects experience overseas where take-up of similar laws in their early years was small."

She urged the state government to embark on a education campaign, targeted at the medical community, outlining their rights and responsibilities in relation to assisted dying.

The Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board, which assesses every application, will release its next report in July, which will reveal the number of people who have taken their own life using the laws in the first year.

VSED has been normalised. But is it ethical? – BioEdge

VSED has been normalised. But is it ethical?

Euthanasia and physician assisted suicide are now legal in dozens of jurisdictions around the world. Yet many people who want to end their lives do not meet the strict eligibility criteria outlined in euthanasia and assisted suicide legislation.

In light of this, medical ethicists have become increasingly interested in what is known as Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED). VSED refers to an action of a competent, capacitated person, who voluntarily and deliberately chooses to stop eating and drinking with the primary intention to hasten death because unacceptable suffering persists. Patients who opt for VSED often receive palliative care from a medical professional as they die. Some commentators have describe VSED as a legal alternative to euthanasia for patients who are suffering unbearably but who are not terminally ill or who for some other reason do not meet relevant eligibility criteria for assistance in dying.

VSED is becoming increasingly common and accepted in some jurisdictions. Indeed, two articles have recently been published in medical journals offering clinical and ethical guidance to clinicians who have a patient seeking VSED.

In an review article in the Annals of Palliative Medicine, three researchers from Lancaster University claim that VSED may in fact be more common than physician-assisted forms of dying simply because it falls beneath the level of legal scrutiny. The authors suggest that VSED is legally permissible in countries such as the United States, the UK and Australia. In the United States, they note that little relevant legal precedent has been set, either related to patients undertaking it or clinicians aiding patients in their VSED effort. Some states explicitly permit VSED in at least some circumstances. A law passed in Nevada in May 2019, for example, allows individuals to create an advance directive for dementia, including the ability to specify that care providers should stop administering food and fluid by mouth.

Handling requests for VSED, however, can be complicated. In a recent article in the Medical Journal of Australia, three Victorian palliative care doctors discuss a case of a 71-year-old man who suffered a massive stroke that resulted in paralysis and severe cognitive impairment. The man required feeding and hydration by medical staff, though there was hope that he could recover his mobility. The man had an Advance Care Directive, however, stating that all care to be discontinued if he found himself in a dependent state. In light of this, his medical team ceased medications and no longer provided food and hydration, despite the fact that the manappeared to accept food and fluids and was capable of making a partial recovery. He died four days after medical care was withdrawn.

Some authors have attempted to distinguish VSED from physician assisted suicide. Legal scholars Thaddeus Pope and Lindsey Anderson, for example, argued that VSED is not a form of assisted suicide as it does not involve the administration or dispensation of a lethal medication by a healthcare professional. Rather, the patients own biology...causes the death. Lynn Jansen and Daniel Sulmasy, however, take a more cautious approach. They state that it is permissible for a physician to support a patients choice to refuse treatment, including nutrition and hydration, where such care is futile. But they believe that many cases of VSED amount to suicide, particularly where a patient is not terminally ill. Physicians, therefore, should not recommend VSED as an option to patients.

Wanted cat Lee is on his way to Peru – The Brussels Times

A cat named Lee who faced euthanasia after being illegally flown into Belgium has boarded a plane back to Peru to be quarantined there before being flown back to his Antwerp owner.

Lee left for Peru this morning. Unfortunately, I wasnt allowed in Peru because of the lockdown, the cats owner, 23-year-old student Selena Ali, wrote on Facebook.

Ali said that the cat, who risked being put to sleep because he was not certified to be free of rabies, would be allowed to return to Belgium from 1 August.

The cats arrival to the country at the height of the pandemic caused a media stir that prompted the highest levels of government, both in Flanders and wider Belgium, to spring to action.

After being told by federal food safety agency AFSCA that Lee would have to be euthanised, Ali put the cat in hiding and launched an online petition which gathered over 80,000 signatures.

The petition prompted a back and forth between Ali and AFSCA which drew in federal and regional Flemish ministers as well as of authorities back in Peru, where Ali found the cat during a year abroad.

The agency said that, without the proper authorisation papers, it could not be fully certain that the cat was free of rabies and said euthanasia was the only solution because there were no dedicated facilities in Belgium to put pets in quarantine.

Making the announcement on Monday, Ali said she was very grateful to Flemish minister Ben Weyts, responsible among other things for animal welfare, for his efforts to save the life of many innocent animals.

According to reports by Het Nieuwsblad, Ali revealed that the cats hiding spot was an animal quarantine centre in Zaventem which was created at the suggestion of Weyts.

On 15 May, AFSCA conducted a house search but found no traces of the cat in Alis home, suggesting the cats hiding place was arranged only weeks after she was first notified of the euthanasia decision in late April.

The cats return flight across the Atlantic will be done at the expenses of Ali, her lawyer said.

According to Alis lawyer, his client still faces criminal prosecution for bringing the cat into the country illegally but said that the coronavirus crisis meant that she had no other choice.

Michigan Pet Fund Alliance offers Out of the Box Awards – The Oakland Press

The Michigan Pet Fund Alliance and the Humane Society of Macomb Foundation are sponsoring a $4,000 Out of the Box Awards competition for Michigan animal shelters and rescue organizations.

The alliance created the annual awards in 2017 to showcase creative ways that animal shelters and rescues save pets lives and to share their ideas with others in the animal welfare community.

We are building a database of programs and processes that shelters and rescues can easily replicate by just taking them out of the box and tweaking them for their needs, Deborah Schutt, the alliances founder and chairwoman, said in a press release.

Three $1,000 cash awards will go to new projects or programs with proven results. Extra consideration will be given to those that engage and strengthen relationships with the community.

One $500 award will go to a standard operating procedure for euthanasia.

Despite Michigan shelters achieving no-kill status in 2018 with a 90% average save rate, humane end-of-life decisions are still required for animals that are too sick, injured or dangerous to save. One of the most difficult topics in animal welfare, every facet of the euthanasia process must be scrutinized to eliminate guesswork and minimize suffering for both animals and humans.

Another $500 award will go to a standard operating procedure in any category, such as adoptions, fosters, transport or animal care. Submissions must demonstrate knowledge of animal welfare best practices and exceptional standards of care.

Applications for the awards are due by midnight June 30. For eligibility requirements and to apply, please visit michiganpetfund.org/no-kill-michigan/2020-out-of-the-box.

Michigan Pet Fund Alliance is a nonprofit advocating best practices to save lives and stop the killing of healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs in Michigan shelters. The alliance provides lifesaving grants, mentoring, educational opportunities, networking and other support to animal shelters and rescues.

David Seymour is standing for ACT in Whangarei – but he’s not that David Seymour – Stuff.co.nz

SUPPLIED

Meet the David Seymours - the new Whangarei candidate is the one on the right

Two men named David Seymour, both from Whangarei, and both standing for ACT.

What are the odds? That's a semi-serious question if any mathematician out there has a few spare minutes.

On Tuesday ACT put out a statement headlined: "David Seymour to stand in Whangarei". Very droll but not a bad way to grab attention, at least among those who care about these things.

The second line of the statement clears up any confusion that might have arisen.

Im not the ACT leader, but I am a strong advocate for end of life choice," the statement quoted the Whangarei candidate, also called David Seymour saying.

Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2017, he was standing for ACT in Whangarei to "highlight the importance of providing compassion and choice for terminally ill New Zealanders", he said.

ACT Party leader David Seymour labels the Labour led Govt 'sleazy' in his party's policy launch on Waitangi Day.

At the general election in September, as well as voting for MPs, New Zealanders will have two referendums to consider.

One is whether cannabis should be legalised, and the other whether the End of Life Choice Bill should become law.

That bill was sponsored by the David Seymour who is the leader of ACT, and MP for Epsom. By a vote of 69 to 51 last November, MPs decided the bill should go to the referendum.

If endorsed by the public, the law will allow those who are terminally ill to request assisted dying. The patient must be the first to suggest assisted dying, and two doctors must agree that the patient is well-informed and other legal criteria are met.

Ive lived a full and active life, but I believe that when my time comes, I should have a choice about how I go. Its my life and my choice," the Whangarei David Seymour said.

Not surprisingly, the announcement of the candidate prompted some comment:

Photos of runaway couple a distraction: High Court – The Tribune India

Saurabh Malik

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 15

Photographs of runaway couple distract the courts mind and have the potential of inviting needless comments from the Bench and waste its time, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asserted. Describing it as a diversion that can bring cases to momentary standstill, Justice Rajiv Narain Raina also directed the High Court Registry not to insist on photographs along with the protection petitions filed by the runaway couples.

Dubbing the task of hearing such matters as childlike, Justice Raina also suggested that an alternative system was required to be put in place for reducing the burden on the courts. Justice Raina asserted dealing with these petitions at the financial expense of runaway couples, actually believing that they would get a marriage certificate from the High Court, was no pleasure.

Making it clear that the practice deserved to be curtailed, Justice Raina asserted it was a big burden on the staff and drained the High Court resources from the filing stage to uploading the order.

The High Court was not built or meant for dealing with the parasitical non-litigation, Justice Raina asserted. I believe it to be the most demeaning childlike work High Court judges have been forcibly tasked with by a creation of the ingenious Bar. A solution needs to be devised to cast the burden on some other alternative mechanism of redress, including amending the law and conferring such power on the subordinate judiciary etc.

In its detailed order, Justice Raina asserted the court had no interest in looking at the pictures of the runaway couples, except curiosity. It needlessly brought the case to a brief halt even though a simple direction was sought and mechanically issued by the Bench based upon Article 21 of the Constitution. It was for saving from distress young couples apprehending physical harm from angry parents and families opposing the marriage. The truth of it was impossible to reach.

Justice Raina added a cottage industry had grown around these petitions over the years and time had come to trim them. The runaways may have little resources in their pocket. The money spent abundantly on the thriving industry could well last the couple their necessities for quite a long time or at least till they live on love and fresh air, Justice Raina asserted.

Effectiveness of RCMP body cameras will depend on clear goals, policies, say experts – Nunatsiaq News

No piece of technology is going to solve deep-seated trust issues in a community with the police

After a significant increase in calls for its officers to be equipped with body-worn cameras, the RCMP announced last week, on June 8, that it would begin work on a broad deployment of the devices nationwide.

But experts who study these devices say their potential benefits will depend on what plans and policies are adopted by the RCMP for their use.

A common mistake when adopting body cameras is rushing into them, said Aili Malm, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at California State University Long Beach.

Malm provides technical assistance and training for police departments on body-worn cameras throughout the United States, where the devices have been used for longer and are more widespread.

One of the first things we ask departments is, why do you want to do this? What are your goals? she said.

If you dont have clear goals, you dont have a good policy. Youre just implementing technology and no technology is a panacea to all the problems were seeing in policing right now.

When David Qamaniq, Nunavuts MLA for Tununiq, raised the issue of body-worn cameras earlier this year during the winter sitting of the legislature, he did so in favour of methods and technologies which can safeguard us against acts of violence.

Concerns have been raised about violent interactions between police and Nunavummiut. We have read about it in newspapers and seen video clips posted on social media. The concerns are real, he said.

Less than a week later there was an RCMP-involved shooting in Kinngait.

Including that incident, there have been three RCMP-involved shootings in Nunavut since Qamaniq spoke.

Two were fatal and all involved Inuit.

Since then, others have joined the call for cameras, including Nunavut Senator Dennis Patterson and MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq.

On June 2, the same day that Iqaluit Mayor Kenny Bell expressed his interest in equipping the RCMP with body-worn cameras, a video surfaced on social media that showed a Kinngait RCMP officer knocking down an Inuk man with a vehicle door.

The incident made national news at a time when widespread protests against police brutality had begun in the United States and Canada.

Following that, Amanda Jones, chief superintendent of the Nunavut RCMP, also lent her support for the cameras.

I think we are all on the same page that we would like to bring in the body cams, she said.

On June 8, less than a week later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after speaking with RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki about the issue, also voiced his support.

It is something that is, in my opinion, what we need to move forward with, he said.

Im committing to raising this with the provinces this week, so we can move forward as quickly as possible.

Later that day the RCMP responded with a statement: The commissioner has confirmed that the RCMP will engage in work and discussion with policing partners and the NPF [the RCMP union] on a broader rollout of body-worn cameras.

One of the recurring hopes expressed by those in support of the cameras is an increase in trust.

But for Malm, thats problematic.

No piece of technology is going to solve deep-seated trust issues in a community with the police, she said.

That being said, it can be an important piece of the puzzle, if implemented correctly.

Prior to the RCMPs commitment to roll out the cameras nationally, the obstacles in the territory repeatedly flagged by Jones and by Nunavuts minister of justice, Jeannie Ehaloak, were the durability of the devices, their cost and the logistics of video storage.

When Qamaniq first asked about the implementation of body-worn cameras in the legislature during the fall sitting last October, one of the answers he received was a concern about the durability of the devices themselves.

We know that in the wintertime, if you have a camera, because of the harsh climate, we dont know how these cameras will withstand within the weather or in the vehicles, but we are checking into it, responded Ehaloak.

The City of Iqaluit bylaw enforcement has been using body-worn cameras in some capacity for roughly five years, first as a trial and now all four bylaw officers are equipped with one.

According to Rod Mugford, the citys chief enforcement officer, the weather isnt an issue.

They dont freeze up. They dont go dead, he said.

The cold doesnt affect them.

Mugford also said that the devices arent even prone to fogging when transitioning from cold environments to warm ones or vice versa.

Another concern about the cameras was their price.

According to Malm, that concern is shared by many police departments. Its a huge cost.

Often, its not the devices themselves, but the file storage thats expensive.

Most of the large vendors will offer the cameras for free as long as you sign a contract for their storage, said Malm.

The City of Iqaluit uses a vendor called Axon, which uses its own proprietary cloud-based storage system called Evidence.com.

While this requires a reliable internet connection, Mugford said that using the Axon cameras and uploading videos to their storage system hasnt been an issue, particularly given the citys policy of uploading all videos at the end of each shift.

With the logistical obstacles cleared, the question for many departments then becomes whether or not the cost is worth it.

Its a really complicated question, said Malm.

Despite the growing number of studies done into the effectiveness of body-worn cameras, Malm says there havent been many that have done a cost-benefit analysis.

In cities like Las Vegas, the cost-benefit of body-worn cameras comes in the form of reduced litigation against the police, says Malm.

But in Nunavut and across Canada, that wouldnt be the case.

You dont have legal suits against the police that they do down here, so your [financial] benefit is likely to be reduced, said Malm.

The other challenge around the cost-benefit analysis of the cameras is putting a dollar amount on goals.

How much value does the department of the community put on increasing trust in police and how do you accomplish that? asked Malm.

Is it always worth it? No. Should all departments implement body-worn cameras? No, but you should carefully consider what the issues are and if body-worn cameras could help.

When Qamaniq brought up the topic of body-worn cameras again during the winter sitting of the legislature, Ehaloak advised him that although the RCMP and the Department of Justice at this time will not be looking at those options, the Kativik Regional Police Force in Nunavik are doing a pilot project in their territory.

Once that pilot projects results are received, we will be looking at their results and the research, and the pilot project itself, and we will be reviewing our [options], she said.

In May, the KRPF said that the pilot project has seen some success.

KRPF Chief Jean-Pierre Larose reported that the six cameras worn by different officers during the pilot project have recorded video footage from 48 police interventions, with 15 of those videos later used as evidence in criminal files.

Most recently, on June 12, KRPF officers equipped with body-worn cameras arrested an intoxicated man outside the Kuujjuaq hospital for obstruction of a peace officer and for resisting arrest after he refused to cooperate with the officers instructions to leave, and was putting his cell phone near the officers face, said a KRPF news release.

Ive viewed the body-camera footage and the actions of the police officer are appropriate and within our policies, said Capt. Maxime Mercier in the release.

The recording shows that the individual was waving his camera within inches of the officers face, even though the officer repeatedly told the person to stay at a reasonable distance.

The release also states that the recording of the incident has been submitted as evidence to a Crown attorney.

While this may satisfy one of the KRPFs goals of the pilot project, providing additional evidence to the court, it may be harmful to others, said Erick Laming, a Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation Ph.D. candidate in criminology at the University of Toronto.

The other goals of the KRPF body-worn camera pilot project include increasing police accountability, transparency, public trust, confidence and the efficiency of resolution of complaints against police officers while reducing use of force incidents by and against the police.

Most of the research [on body-worn cameras] suggests that complaints against officers do decrease [when theyre used], said Laming.

But theres a problem with that, because we have no way of knowing if thats a change in officer behaviour, citizen reporting behaviour, or something else.

In his experience researching police use of force and oversight, Laming has asked Indigenous community members if they would be willing to file a complaint against the police after body camera implementation. They said no way.

While this cant be generalized, Laming said that part of the reason behind that may be because theyre already targeted to begin with.

Now if they put in a complaint, everything is going to be captured in the camera. The police have that. Its a little bit more power. Its more surveillance for the police. So that person is going to feel even more vulnerable, especially if it comes back and its found that the police are investigating, said Laming.

So thats not going to really increase any trust. It actually pushes those people away from reporting.

Laming also ties this issue to transparency.

If somebody doesnt want to make a complaint or theyre fearful or they distrust the system to begin with, and its captured on video, are we ever going to know whatever happened if the RCMP dont release it? he asked.

The issue also extends to policies governing the use of the cameras and disciplinary actions if those policies arent adhered to.

In Calgary theyve had cameras for over a year on all officers and we cant even get access to that policy publicly, wed have to go through an FOI [freedom of information request], said Laming.

So if we dont even know what the policy says publicly, how can we trust whats going on?

The KRPF policy regarding camera use is also not publicly available, though when asked via email, Mercier stated, police officers wearing the body cameras must record every intervention involving violence, impaired driving and any other extraordinary circumstances. The goal, as the project progresses, is to eventually record every intervention.

Mercier also noted that Failing to respect the internal procedure on body cameras can result in disciplinary sanctions going from a warning to a dismissal.

For both Laming and Malm, community involvement in the creation of body-worn camera policy is critical.

It cant be just the police department sitting down and saying this is going to be our body-worn camera policy because the policy deals with a lot of different things: How often is footage going to be reviewed? [H]ow are we going to release it to the public? How are we going to deal with instances of abuse when we see it on camera? said Malm.

If you dont get the perspective and the voice of the community in those policies and if the policies arent being enforced, if the department isnt accountable to those policies, then youre going to see much less effect on trust and accountability and transparency.

Despite both being police forces in Inuit Nunangat, what works for the KPRF in Nunavik may not work for the Nunavut RCMP, a national police force operating under a 20-year contract in the territory.

Context is everything. We see such dramatically different [body camera] results in different departments, said Malm.

The Arctic is much different than the City of Montreal or the City of Vancouver and those two cities are different from one another as well, and thats really, really important to keep in mind.

Despite this, the policy for body-worn cameras for the RCMP will be used across the country.

Its something that we have to address on a national level, said Jones.

With that said, Malm, who began her policing career in Canada before moving to the United States, does see the advantages of a national police force and a national body-worn camera policy.

The United States has 18,000 police departments that are all independent from one another, and there are no national guidelines for these police departments, says Malm.

I think the RCMP could be a nice uniting force with the understanding that every jurisdiction is going to have its own challenges and should be able to refine that national policy to suit their needs and their problems, she said.

For Laming, the issue isnt so much with a national RCMP policy on body-worn cameras, its with the inconsistencies within and surrounding the RCMP.

You have specific communities in Nunavut that are wildly different from a municipality in B.C., where the RCMP [also] deliver policing but theyre run under the territorial and provincial governments so they have to abide by the policies in those jurisdictions. But at the same time, the RCMP has its own legislation and policies, so it could conflict in a lot of ways.

This is most apparent in police oversight, says Laming.

If the RCMP shoots and kills somebody in B.C. you have the IIO [Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia] who investigates. If an RCMP officer shoots and kills somebody in Nunavut, another police service investigates, he said.

So you have these inequities and that, from my experience and from talking to a lot of residents, doesnt build trust, if you dont even have a consistent way of dealing with police abuse or serious major incidents.

According to Ehaloak, a new model for civilian oversight of the RCMP in Nunavut could be announced at the legislative assemblys fall sitting.

For Laming, this is something that needs to come before the cameras.

If you implement body cameras without a proper civilian oversight agency, its counterproductive because its still the police investigating the police when it comes to reviewing the footage, he said.

Laming also believes that any proper oversight agency needs to consist of members of the community, leaders and Indigenous leaders that investigate all use of force cases from the video evidence, not just those that resulted in injuries or deaths.

That way we have that independence that can come in and say, Yeah, they were justified or theyre werent justified, heres why and heres what we would recommend for disciplinary mechanisms, said Laming.

Thats the only way we can really, truly, at least improve accountability.

Josiah Henson: the forgotten story in the history of slavery – The Guardian

From its very first moments, Harriet Beecher Stowes debut novel Uncle Toms Cabin was a smashing success. It sold out its 5,000-copy print run in four days in 1852, with one newspaper declaring that everybody has read it, is reading, or is about to read it. Soon, 17 printing presses were running around the clock to keep up with demand. By the end of its first year in print, the book had sold more than 300,000 copies in the US alone, and another million in Great Britain. It went on to become the bestselling novel of the 19th century.

Before reading Uncle Toms Cabin, I only knew that Stowes novel had been credited with influencing the debate at the heart of the American civil war. I had an expensive education, but sadly I learned very little about black history at school; by my early 20s, only names such as Frederick Douglass or Harriet Tubman still rang a bell. All that changed when I discovered that Stowes novel was based on the life of a real man, named Josiah Henson, whose cabin in Ontario was just a few hours from my home.

As I walked the four-acre grounds and tiny museum, an astounding story unfolded. Henson was entertained at both Windsor Castle and the White House. He won a medal at the first Worlds Fair, the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park. The British prime minister Lord John Russell threw him a surprise banquet. The archbishop of Canterbury wept after hearing his story. Henson rescued 118 enslaved people, including his own brother, and helped build a 500-person freeman settlement, called Dawn, that was known as one of the final stops on the Underground Railroad. But before all this, he was brutally enslaved for more than 40 years.

And few people have heard of him. Henson has largely been lost to history. Every month, nearly 1.4 million people Google Abraham Lincoln, 228,000 look up Frederick Douglass, and 135,000 search for Confederate general Robert E Lee. Around 3,400 seek out Henson. But after I visited his cabin, I had to know more so I set off on a 3,000-mile journey to retrace his footsteps from birth to freedom.

Henson was born near Port Tobacco, Maryland, around 1789. His first memory was of his father being whipped to the bone, having his ear cut off and being sold south all as punishment for striking a white man who had attempted to rape his wife. He never saw his father again. Several years later, Henson was separated from his mother and sold to a child trafficker, but soon fell dangerously ill. The slave trader offered the boy to Hensons mothers owner, an alcoholic blacksmith named Isaac Riley, at a price he couldnt refuse: free of charge if the boy died, some horseshoeing work if he survived.

Henson not only survived but rose to the position of farm overseer and Rileys market man in the nations capital. There he rubbed shoulders with lawyers, businessmen and Methodist ministers, one of whom taught him how to preach and helped him fundraise to buy his freedom.

After receiving a $350 down payment on his emancipation about three years wages for a white farm labourer Riley swindled Henson by sending him to Kentucky to visit his brother Amos, who attempted to sell him south to New Orleans. Henson narrowly avoided that harsh fate through a highly providential twist of events: Rileys nephew Amos Junior, the young man tasked with selling Henson, contracted malaria. Rather than letting the teenager die, Henson honourably loaded him on a steamship, then returned north.

In 1830, Henson escaped Kentucky by water on a moonless night. Travelling by night and sleeping by day, Henson, his wife and four children made the 600-mile journey to the Canadian border on foot, assisted in part by Quakers and Native Americans, but mostly by their own pluck. Upon reaching the Niagara River, a kindly Scottish captain paid to send the Henson family across. According to one edition of Hensons autobiography, the captain asked if Henson would be a good man in his new land.

Yes, Henson replied. Ill use my freedom well.

And indeed, the overarching theme of Hensons story is the stewardship of freedom. Rather than using his prodigious business and oratory skills to simply build a comfortable life for himself, he agitated for equality of opportunity, smuggled friends and family to safety, planted churches, and defended himself against imprisonment after supporting families who sent sons to fight in the civil war. He embarked on a nearly 100-stop British speaking tour to raise funds for the cause. With the help of US American supporters and British Christian philanthropists, he constructed a settlement for African American refugees, fundraised for black social enterprises including a sawmill and brickworks, and even built a desegregated school, nearly a century before the end of Jim Crow in the 1960s.

Inspired in part by Hensons story, Stowe penned her novel. The backlash came rapidly and rabidly; authors and columnists rushed to defend their romantic and chivalric southern ideals from this Yankee onslaught, arguing that Stowes writing was nothing more than sectarian propaganda.

In response, Stowe published A Key to Uncle Toms Cabin. In it, she named all the real people who inspired Mr Haley, George Harris, Eliza, Simon Legree, and the rest. As for Uncle Tom, Stowe wrote: The character of Uncle Tom has been objected to as improbable; and yet the writer has received more confirmations of that character, and from a great variety of sources, than of any other in the book. Laying out the inspiration for various scenes in Uncle Toms story, she declared: A last instance parallel with that of Uncle Tom is to be found in the published memoirs of the venerable Josiah Henson now pastor of the missionary settlement at Dawn, in Canada.

Among all the readers of Stowes Key, there was one whose influence could not be overstated. According to the Library of Congresss circulation records, Lincoln borrowed The Key to Uncle Toms Cabin on 16 June 1862, and returned it 43 days later, on 29 July. The dates correspond exactly to the time during which he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. We may never know the degree to which Stowe influenced Lincoln, but it is clear that during the critical time, he had Hensons story near at hand.

Hensons story played a major role in Lincolns election as well. His Republican party distributed 100,000 copies of Uncle Toms Cabin during the presidential campaign of 1860, as a way to stir up anti-slavery support. Without the abolitionist press and Stowes book, its possible that Lincoln would not have garnered enough support to win. As fellow Republican US senator Charles Sumner declared: Had there been no Uncle Toms Cabin, there would have been no Lincoln in the White House.

Despite the fact that Henson played a pivotal role in world history, entrenched values are not easily uprooted. After Stowe published the Key and identified Henson, his supporters rebranded him the real Uncle Tom. It was a good thing, at the time. Today Uncle Tom has a very derogatory meaning, due to its bastardisation at the hands of racist blackface playwrights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The man who sacrificed himself to win freedom for others was turned into a subservient and cowardly slave who curries favour with the white man. In a cruel disfigurement of a fictional hero, humility became baboonery, martyrdom became traitorhood. For more than 40 years after his death, blackface Tom shows played within a half-mile of Hensons grave. And within a generation, his story was nearly lost.

This is perhaps the greatest travesty of the white-centric narratives we are taught about our nations pasts, that a bona fide international hero can be erased because of the colour of his skin. Black history has been intentionally lost and destroyed, on a huge scale. There are certainly many more figures like Henson, but we dont even know what we dont know. Harpers Magazine once estimated that the US owes more than $100 trillion in reparations for forced labour between 1619 and 1865. After slavery was abolished in the US, it continued overseas there may be more people enslaved today than at any point in history while other means of repression were quickly institutionalised to deal with the black problem in the US. Jim Crow tactics eventually failed, as will manufactured inequality, mass incarceration, and violence-based policing. But who knows what the future holds, in the age of AI superintelligence, algorithmic blockchains, and surveillance corporatism.

Henson died at 93 in Ontario, in 1883. Today, he has been consigned to obscurity. There are no riverfront statues of him, nor are there any parks, schools, or universities named in his honour. He is little-taught in British, American or Canadian history classrooms, nor has his story been portrayed on the big or small screen. But thankfully, Hensons legacy continues through his descendants, who include Arctic explorer Matthew Henson, Oscar-nominated actor Taraji P Henson, and the hundreds-strong family reunion that takes place every summer, rotating between Michigan, Ontario, and Maryland. So long as the Henson family lives, there will be torchbearers to keep his story alive. It may take another 100 years before school children know the name Henson as readily as they do Lincoln and Washington but as monuments to racism topple around the globe, they leave space for worthier replacements.

Reason is on the side of faith Faith works on a different plane, asking questions that science cant – Economic Times

Francis Collins, a physician-geneticist, is the director of Americas National Institutes of Health (NIH). He worked on the Human Genome Project, a 13-year collaborative effort to map the complete set of human genes, which concluded in 2003. Separately, he has also researched the complementarity of science and faith. He was recently awarded the John Templeton Prize for his work on the subject. He explains his world view to Narayani Ganesh:

You were still in medical school when you made the transition from being agnostic, then atheist, to believer. How difficult is it to straddle both reason and faith?

I find it wonderfully rewarding. Science is the way to investigate nature, to ask the how questions like how genes code for proteins. Faith works on a different plane, asking why questions that science cant answer like why is there something instead of nothing, and is there a God? I am interested in all of the questions, and I find science and faith to be complementary.

Did your science background have a vital role to play in widening your perspective to include higher dimensions associated with spirituality?

I was already pursuing a scientific career when, as a medical student, I needed to understand why people believe in God. I approached faith with suspicion that reason would have to be sacrificed to accept the spiritual world view. I found out that was not at all the case. Atheism, the assertion of a universal negative, turned out to be the most irrational of the choices. To my surprise, reason was very much on the side of faith. I ended up being converted to Christianity.

Was your best-selling book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, received well in your peer group?

There are many scientists who believe in a personal God, and they welcomed the book. Many others who are not people of faith were polite but a bit perplexed. A few of the atheist persuasion were strongly critical, arguing that my book revealed intellectual weakness, and a scientist should never write about faith.

Cutting-edge genetics include cloning and transgenetics that have raised ethical questions. How do these align with your religious beliefs?

As a Christian, I believe that we humans are special creatures with a special relationship with God. As such, the potential to reshape our very nature seems to cross a line into dangerous territory. Most ethicists agree with that, whether or not they are people of faith.

America is known for its deep divide over creationism/ intelligent design and evolutionary biology. What are your views on this?

The chronic conflict between science and faith is now particularly evident in this area of origins, and it troubles me greatly to see how this is driving people apart, and even causing young people to walk away from faith. As a scientist who studies the details of living things, including their digital record of past inheritance [DNA], I can tell you that the evolutionary relatedness of all living things, including humans, is absolutely compelling. Some say that evolution is just a theory, but this theory is about as well-established as gravity. As a believer in a Creator God, I find this all makes perfect sense God started the universe 14 billion years ago with matter, energy and a set of natural laws that would ultimately give rise to sentient creatures on a small blue planet. As the Creator is not limited in space or time, the outcome was known all along by God. That doesnt mean we dont have free will we most certainly do. And we can choose to seek God or to run the other way.

You are also a musician, and are known to have promoted music as therapy, especially in treating neurological conditions. Will you be doing further research on this?

I am fascinated by the way music can lift our spirits, inspire us to do great things, and bring us together. I am also impressed by how music therapy can help people with PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder], Parkinsons disease, or chronic pain and Id like to understand that better to make the treatment even more effective. The NIH now has a research programme to study these issues bringing together neuroscientists, musicians and music therapists. I expect interesting insights to happen.

In the context of Covid-19, how soon do you think we might have a vaccine?

Progress has been remarkable since the ACTIV [Accelerating Covid-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines] partnership came together in early April, bringing scientific talent and resources from all sectors onto the same team. Ive never seen such dedication and commitment. Phase I results from the first US vaccine are encouraging, others are close behind, and large-scale vaccine trials will be getting underway this summer. There are many uncertainties, but having a widely available safe and effective vaccine by early 2021 seems possible.

60% of Bitcoin supply held as digital gold by investors – Crypto News Flash

The data analysis firm Chainalysis has published a report on the whereabouts of the Bitcoin supply since the first block was mined by its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Specifically, the report provides an overview of the data that exists on the ownership and trade in Bitcoin.

According to the analysis firm, 18.6 million Bitcoins have been mined as of the publication date of the report. Of that amount, approximately 60% is held by institutions, individuals or businesses that have never sold more than 25%. In that sense, Chainalysis determines that these investors have maintained their BTCs for many years and consider Bitcoin a long-term investment.

Another 20% of BTCs supply has been sitting still in directions for more than 5 years, and therefore the data analysis firm considers them lost Bitcoins. The other 19% of all already mined Bitcoin moves frequently between the different exchanges and constitutes the Bitcoin trading market, as can be seen in the graph below.

Source: https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/bitcoin-market-data-exchanges-trading

Chainalysis concludes the following:

The data shows that the majority of Bitcoin is held by those who treat it as digital gold: an asset to be held for the long term. But this digital gold is supported by an active trading market for those who prefer to buy and sell frequently. The 3.5 million Bitcoin used for trading supplies the market, and, in interaction with the level of demand, determines the price.

In addition, the firm predicts that there will be an increased need to inject more Bitcoin into the trading market. Especially after the Bitcoin halving that will make the asset even scarcer over time. Therefore, Chainalysis expects to move more Bitcoin from investors reserves to trading as a way to provide liquidity to the market. However, this will only happen if the price of Bitcoin reaches a level that long-term investors find attractive to encourage the sale of the cryptocurrency.

Chainalysis also determined that of the millions of Bitcoin holders, only 340,000 are active weekly BTC traders. The data allows Chainalysis to divide those traders into two groups: retailers and professionals, as shown in the graph below.

Source: https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/bitcoin-market-data-exchanges-trading

According to this chart, retailers trade less than $10,000 of BTC on exchanges and constitute 96% of all transfers to these platforms on a weekly basis. At the same time, professional traders control the liquidity in the market and account for 85% of the total US dollar value in Bitcoin. Chainalysis further describes:tates:

() professional traders are the most significant contributors to large market movements, such as those seen duringBitcoins dramatic price declinein March as the Covid-19 crisis intensified in North America. However, professional traders are few in number, moving all that value in just 39,000 transfers per week on average in 2020.

At the of writing Bitcoin trades at $9,353 with a slight gain of 0.37% in the last 24 hours. Over the past week, BTC has remained relatively stable in the range of $9,300 to $9,500. Bitcoin is at a crossroads and analysts have not reached a consensus on whether its performance in the coming days will be bullish or bearish.

How many Bitcoin billionaires are there? – Decrypt

Since Bitcoin kickstarted the cryptocurrency revolution in 2009, the crypto space has grown dramatically; Bitcoin alone has reached a market capitalization of over $170 billion, while more than a dozen other digital assets have achieved a market value of more than $1 billion.

As a result of this staggering growth, a number of early adopters, pioneers and builders have become billionaires, joining the ranks of the world's wealthiest individuals. However, due to the volatility of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, any wealth held in crypto assets can fluctuate wildlymaking it difficult to pin down exactly who is a billionaire at any one time.

Despite strong growth in the crypto market since the start of the year, Forbes recognizes just four cryptocurrency billionaires as of April 2020less than half that listed in its 2018 Richest People In Cryptocurrency list.

There are also likely a handful of anonymous Bitcoin billionaires out there, since there are three addresses that contain more than $800 million of Bitcoin each, while just a single addressmanaged by a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchangecontains more than $1 billion in BTC.

Of course, with recent reports that Bitcoin improves a portfolio's performance it's likely that there are other billionaires who own Bitcoin beyond the ones who got rich off itbut we're specifically looking at those who made their fortunes from the cryptocurrency.

Today, half of the four known cryptocurrency billionaires founded cryptocurrency exchange platforms, while the other two are figures behind two major crypto companies.

And no, despite the fact that they're about to be the subject of a movie titled Bitcoin Billionaires, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss aren't on the list; as of last year their combined net worth amounted to $1.45 billion. Despite Mark Zuckerberg referring to them as the Winklevii, the Winklevoss twins are two separate individuals, not a gestalt entityand individually, they're not billionaires, so they don't go on the list. Better luck next year, guys.

37-year-old Brian Armstrong is currently the youngest known cryptocurrency billionaire. He first made his entry into the world of cryptocurrency back in 2012, after co-founding the San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

The exchange is currently valued at up to $10 billion, making it one of the most successful crypto companies to date. Armstrong currently occupies position #1990 on Forbes Billionaires 2020 list, with an estimated net worth of $1 billion.

As the founder and CEO of Binance, currently the world's most popular cryptocurrency spot trading platform, Changpeng Zhao has managed to amass an impressive fortune since the exchange launched in 2017.

Zhao now sits on a fortune worth an estimated $1.2 billion, the majority of which is likely formed from cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the native Binance utility coinBinance Coin (BNB).

The second wealthiest crypto pioneer is Chris Larsen, a renowned business executive credited with co-founding Ripplea blockchain-based remittance and payment settlement system that uses XRP for cross-border transactions.

Before creating Ripple, Larsen also co-founded several other multi-million dollar companies, but these only contributed to a tiny fraction of his current $2.6 billion fortune.

Despite being arguably the least-known name on this list, Micree Zhan is by far the wealthiest, having amassed a cool $3.2 billion net worth as of June 2020. Zhan is an electronics engineer and the co-founder of Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer Bitmain.

The company has recently been the subject of a dispute between Zhan and fellow co-founder Jihan Wu, which saw Zhan hiring a squad of armed guards to forcefully seize control of the company after being ousted last October.

It should come as no surprise that the anonymous founder of Bitcoin is also one of its biggest holders. According to a 2013 analysis by RSK labs co-founder Sergio Demian Lerner, Satoshi Nakamoto could have as much as 1.1 million Bitcoin stashed away.

At the current Bitcoin price of around $9,400, that would make Satoshi worth $10.34 billionfar more than everyone else on this list combined. And so far, Satoshi hasn't moved a single cent, leading some to speculate that he (or she, or they) may have met an untimely end.

Currency wars: The rise of bitcoin – Opinion – Jakarta Post

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. The year was 1944 in the United States. The 44 allied countries met in Bretton Woods in order to confer on moving towards fixing and backing the US dollar, along with other currencies, with gold, thus starting an era when currencies were fixed or to gold.

For the next 26 years, this standard remained and the US dollar became the de facto reserve currency of the world. At the end of World War II, the US controlled about two thirds of the worlds gold reserve.

Countries that have the worlds reserve currencies are powerful and tended to get away with borrowing a lot. Thats because other countries were inclined to hold the debt/money as it can be used for spending around the world. All of that borrowing will have to be paid back one day.

By 1971, the US Federal Reserve had printed so much debt that they didnt have enough gold to back up the US dollar. As a result, the Bretton Woods monetary system broke down in 1971 when President Nixon, like President Roosevelt in 1933, defaulted on the USs promise of allowing holders of paper dollars to turn them in for gold.

Therefore, the dollar is no longer pegged to gold and it devalued against gold and other currencies. During this period, the US and all countries went into a free-floating currency era where the value of each currency was not backed by a particular asset but remained relative in value to other asset classes.

The move to a fiat monetary system gave the Federal Reserve and other central banks the ability to print dollar-denominated money and credit, which led to the inflationary during the 1970s. During this period, there was a flight from dollars and dollar-denominated debt to goods, services, and inflation-hedge assets such as gold which many considered to be a good store of wealth. During this period we moved from asset-backed money towards a floating fiat currency not backed by assets. And for the next 50 years, this worked fine.

In 2008, interest rates hit the lowest levels during the economic recession and the US government decided to initiate quantitative easing by printing more money and buying financial assets. Fast forward to today, their debt has ballooned to US$24 trillion dollars as of April 2020.

But something unexpected happened. The coronavirus triggered the economic and market downturns all over the world, which created holes in incomes and balance sheets, especially for indebted entities whose incomes have been affected by the downturn.

So, on April 9, 2020, the US central government and the US central bank or the Fed announced a massive money and credit creation program that included helicopter money (direct payments from the government to citizens) that eclipsed anything theyve done before. This was essentially the same move that Roosevelt made in 1933.

However skeptics point out that the hope for growth, created by the debt printed by the Fed, is not reflected by the productivity gains from businesses around the world. This scenario tends to lead to inflation. If we looked back historically, these periods tend to be characterized by people converting assets to those that are not inflationary in nature, such as gold or assets that have a fixed amount or a scarcity quality to it.

In 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin with the idea of building an alternative currency as a response to the financial recession of 2008 and the burgeoning debt around the US dollar. The hope was to create an alternative financial system that is resilient against socio-economic changes and geopolitical fights.

The idea behind bitcoin is simple. At its core, bitcoin is an alternative currency that is among other things:

(1) Decentralized and not controlled by any person/entity being (built through a decentralized network).

(2) Scarce in nature (only 21 million bitcoins will ever be created) and therefore deflationary in nature- over time it becomes more and more difficult to produce bitcoins (thus, theoretically making its value go up).

Over the past 10 years, bitcoins growth in acceptance and value has kept rising and the currency has shown its resilience over many peaks and troughs throughout its short lifetime. In the backdrop of what is going on in the world today, many believe that bitcoin can be the next global reserve currency and become the safe have asset.

We have already seen Bitcoin being used more in countries where its national currency goes through massive inflation (such as Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Zimbabwe).

Bitcoin is set to go through its scheduled halving on May 11, 2020. This means that it will technically be two times as hard to mine new bitcoins, forcing miners to sell their bitcoins at a higher price in order to cover the operational cost. This will change the supply and demand dynamics with many predicting the price to continue going up.

The next few months will be an exciting time for bitcoin, as the macro-economic changes in the world set up the stage for a good testing ground for Bitcoin to prove itself. Now, its your turn to choose. May the force be with you. Always.

The Difference Between Blockchain and Bitcoin – UKTN

Many people are making a huge amount of money through cryptocurrencies nowadays. However, there has been extensive debate regarding the use of cryptocurrencies for money making. That debate is majorly based on two essential terms, bitcoin and blockchain. The surprising part is that despite the ongoing debates and the fact that a lot of people are making money out of it, theyre still confused between the two.

It is pertinent to mention here that Blockchain is the technology while bitcoin is the first successful application of that technology, which rose to popularity in 2009. This article would categorically differentiate between the two and explain their use in the world of cryptocurrencies.

To begin, we need to understand each term with a contextual background.

Blockchain is a computerized digital payment gateway that allows record transactions between two parties constantly and correctly. To further simplify, blockchain is a distributed ledger technology, which restricts to bitcoin; in fact, any digital asset. It enables multiple parties to transact, share valuable data, and pool in their resources in a secure yet tamperproof manner.

Many in and out of the industry assume that blockchain is the latest technology. However, that is not the case, blockchain can be traced back to 1991, but it only became popular after the advent of cryptocurrencies.

Here is why blockchain may be difficult to understand or perhaps regulate. Blockchain is decentralized, made up of three important concepts, blocks, miners, and nodes.

Foodtech startup Grocemania announces nationwide expansion

Each chain comprises Blocks, which is central to blockchain technology. They contain all the relevant information about a transaction. Each block has a unique nonce and hash and is stored not only linearly; in fact, chronologically, always at the end of the blockchain. As the chain increases, it is tough to go back and manipulate or disrupt the chain.

Miners are the ones that create multiple blocks, which is an incredibly complex task considering the composition of a neighborhood.

Nodes are significant in understanding the decentralization system within the blockchain. Through nodes, no one organization can own the blockchain, which helps blockchain to maintain integrity and prevent a breach of privacy through any systematic or unsystematic exchange of information.

Bitcoin is one of the earliest cryptocurrency to use blockchain technology in facilitating peer to peer payments. Through a decentralized network, bitcoin offers a reasonably low transaction fee compared to popular payment gateways.

Language learning app Memrise scores $15.5m Series B

The first and foremost thing is to get a bitcoin wallet, software to send, receive, and securely store funds. You can download it on your phone, PC, or any equivalent digital device for that matter. The second part is to earn bitcoins through trading, to play online games like Bitcoin blackjack, or requesting bitcoin payments from a client. Bitcoin is not like any other currency governed under a central banking system.

Bitcoins are not stored physically on any platform, and it uses a mathematical algorithm to protect a string of numbers stored in public and a private key. In layman terms, the public key is equivalent to a bank account number, while a private key is equivalent to an ATM pin. A bitcoin is divisible to 8 decimal places with the smallest unit known as satoshi named after the currency`s pseudo founder Satoshi Nakamoto.

As complex as it sounds, bitcoin is not a problematic currency to understand. It is far more convenient to pay or get paid. All one has to do is to create a bitcoin wallet and put the address into any digital currency platform.

If youve recently found the world of cryptocurrencies, it is perhaps understandable to mix up bitcoin and blockchain, but there are some significant differences between the two.

South Yorkshire tech firm Metalysis closes 20m funding round

If youre someone who uses online payment gateways to send, receive, or store currency, you need to understand the relation between bitcoin and blockchain. However, blockchain has several uses other than regulating bitcoins.

Blockchain can help execute smart contracts; blockchain can automatically release agreed-upon payments. It can help you maintain a transparent system of record, audit supply chains, or provide you with proof of insurance.

Now that you are pretty clear between blockchain and bitcoin, there is one industry that has lately adopted blockchain technology: the online gambling industry. Developers use blockchain technology to develop games on a decentralized ledger. No matter what, youre playing from lotteries to online poker, slots, or perhaps sports betting. Blockchain enables a data-driven yet the secure dispensable system for gamblers to pursue trustworthy transactions through bitcoin over traditional banking payment gateways.

Now here is the thing with crypto gambling, in regular online gambling, you register, enter your bank details, the merchant verifies, and the process goes on. With bitcoin, you can start betting, and the merchant knows that your payment is not going anywhere.

Blockchain continues to dominate our internet spaces. It is perhaps essential to exercise caution when dealing with cryptocurrencies. For example, if you are pursuing crypto gambling, make sure you use trustworthy service providers. Often online casino websites use third-party service providers to convert you bitcoin deposits into local digital currency.

Bitcoin and blockchain technology remains mostly under or unregulated throughout the world due to innate complex structures. Therefore be careful while using bitcoins in any online transaction.

On a positive note, despite the intricacies, both offline and online casinos worldwide are adopting blockchain technology and accepting bitcoin payments. Soon this technology will take over traditional payment gateways such as Visa and PayPal. More importantly, it can change the way we process payments for casinos; making them safer and easier.

BSV Dukes It Out with Binance – Live Bitcoin News

It looks like bitcoin SV (BSV) and cryptocurrency exchange Binance the largest and most popular cryptocurrency trading platform by daily volume are at each others throats.

The two companies are fighting with each other over Binances decision last year to delist the new cryptocurrency token made popular and consistently promoted by Australian tech entrepreneur Craig Wright. Jimmy Nguyen the president of bitcoin SV (Bitcoin Satoshi Vision) has said that Binance has not behaved fairly to the coin and that it has shown a biased attitude towards other assets.

Nguyens primary gripe is in the crypto exchanges decision to not list the cryptocurrency yet take part in a new mining pool that seeks to extract new units of BSV. Binance is one of the biggest members of the pool yet is refusing to present bitcoin SV to clients for the purpose of buying, trading, and selling the currency.

In a statement, Nguyen blasted the crypto exchanges decisions, claiming:

These actions speak far louder than words. Binance spoke in April of 2019 when it delisted BSV by saying that the coin did not meet its standards. The truth is that BSV does meet Binances standards for generating revenue from BSV when it so chooses.

Binance was not the only company to take heavy action against one of the crypto worlds latest coins. Others included Kraken and Shape Shift, two crypto exchanges that decided delisting BSV was in customers best interest. It appears these exchanges and others arent happy with Craig Wrights decision to consistently tout himself as Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of bitcoin the world number one cryptocurrency by market cap which first emerged in a 2008 whitepaper.

BSV has a relatively controversial history behind it. Many believe it was the development of BSV that saw to the massive drops in the crypto space that occurred in late 2018. Bitcoin, for example, had spent most of the summer trading in the mid-$6,000 range. This, itself, was a major drop from the near-$20,000 figure it had reached in December of 2017.

Bitcoin SV emerged due to a hard fork of bitcoin cash, which itself was the result of a bitcoin hard fork that occurred in the late summer months of 2017. BSV has been around for only two years, making it a relatively new coin. However, following its inception, the crypto market began experiencing massive drops, with bitcoin falling into the mid-$3,000 range and losing close to 70 percent of its value over an 11-month period.

Approximately five months went by before the industry began showing signs of recuperation (bitcoin ultimately moved back up to $5,000 by the time April 2019 rolled in).

At press time, Binance accounts for approximately 20 percent of the BSV mining pools hash rate.

Binance becomes the biggest miner of a coin it delisted last year – Invezz

Binance, one of the worlds largest digital currency exchanges, recently started getting into mining. The exchange decided to expand its ecosystem further still by launching Binance Pool. Now, the new data is in, and it shows that the exchange became the leading miner of Bitcoin SV.

Binance currently leads in the Bitcoin SV (BSV) mining sector by mining around 26% of all BSV that is mined. Next in line is Huobi, with 13.19%, ViaBTC (12.5%), SVPool (12.5%), TAAL (7.64%), and others.

The exchanges choice to mine Bitcoin SV comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that the exchange delisted this particular coin only a year ago. The exchange seemingly did not have a problem with the coin itself, but rather with its controversial creator and proponent, Dr. Craig Wright.

Regardless, when the exchange delisted BSV, it announced that it took several factors into consideration. One thing that is important to Binance is that the project needs to contribute to a healthy and sustainable cryptocurrency ecosystem. Another thing that it will look into is whether or not there is evidence of fraudulent or unethical conduct.

The decision to delist BSV came due to Craig Wrights actions. Wright is known in the crypto industry for his claims of being Satoshi Nakamoto Bitcoins mysterious creator.

However, Wright was never able to prove his claims, and so the crypto industry stopped taking such claims seriously a long time ago. These days, Wright is known as Faketoshi. and he managed to provoke Binances CEO, Changpeng Zhao, into removing BSV from the exchange.

Wrights claims of being Satoshi went as far as to him threatening to sue everyone who says otherwise, Zhao decided to put a stop to Wrights feud with the crypto community by threatening to delist BSV unless Wright withdraws. Since he did not do so, Zhao decided to deliver on his promise, and BSV lost Binances support. Meanwhile, Wright got involved into a legal battle with the Kleiman estate, further continuing his own troubles.

BTC-Tether relationship: How long can it last? – CoinGeek

The BTC block subsidy halving happened a month ago, and despite all the mainstream chatter predicting a price spike following the event, BTCs unit price is currently around the US$9,500 mark. Between May 11 and 15, it went from $8,600 to almost $9,800, and it has fluctuated since then. Other assets have had similar fortunes. In the absence of significant news, what makes those prices rise and fall? Its time to take another look at USDT, the USD-pegged stablecoin otherwise known as Tether.

Most long-term digital asset watchers (including us) never thought it was realistic to expect the BTC price to double immediately post-halving, because that has never happened before. Gains, where they came, were in the year following a halving and might have been more correlation than causation.

Longer-term, BTC transaction processors (aka miners) must rely on BTC value increases to continue making a profit. BTCs 1-4MB block size means a transaction maximum of ~4-7 per second, and theres no room for processing data other than payments and blockchain settlements. A single transaction might cost US$5 or more at times, but its still not enough to pay the miners.

This article is neither investment advice nor a prediction that BTCs price will necessarily do anything special post-halving. Its merely an observation and even a warning that BTC price moves do not represent real value.

We havent seen any news regarding new BTC features, sudden mass adoption or an increase in its utility lately. In recent years, there hasnt been a major business or other entity announcing it would use BTC. In fact, its quite the opposite as many merchants who once accepted BTC have decided it wasnt worthwhile. Yet BTC continues to rise or fall every day, based mainly on traders speculation.

Around halving time, high profile hedge fund investors like Paul Tudor Jones appeared in the mainstream media promoting BTC as an inflation hedge against the U.S. dollar. It was pertinent, given the U.S. Federal Reserves money-creation orgy since 2008 and especially following the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. This hedging role has, in the past, been largely golds domain. Yet there hasnt been a huge rush to hold BTC or any other digital asset.

Where does BTC-buying money come from?

The Whale Alert Twitter account tracks large transfers of various digital assets between wallets, which often signal price moves. Of particular interest, though, is when the Tether Treasury mints new USDT coins and they begin moving to large exchanges like Binance and Bitfinex. Market watchers have noted that whenever millions of new USDT appear in exchange wallets, BTC is about to rise.

On May 8, 2020, the Tether Treasury minted 120 million new USDT. Read the replies to this tweet to see what speculators expected to see next:

Thats a nice bonus for price speculators. But is this really the Bitcoin economy we wanted? For those who still remember, Bitcoin was supposed to be about freeing money and building a new kind of financial system that included everyone, from micro-transactors to large businesses. Would Bitcoin have ever won the following it has if the headline to its 2008 whitepaper had read Bitcoin: a peer-to-peer electronic pump and dump scheme?

What is Tether and why is it controversial?

Tether is (in theory) USD and EUR-equivalent stablecoin managed by Tether Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tether Holdings Limited. Tether Limited and Bitfinex, one of the largest BTC exchanges by volume, both share a CEO: Jan van der Velde. Bitfinex was the first exchange to allow USDT trading and there have been several shifting personnel links between Bitfinex and Tether over the years.

The initial idea was to have a USD surrogate without needing to use (or transfer) actual USD, since the latter was proving problematic in the banking system. Tether was initially backed by equivalent reserves of U.S. dollars, and would have a stable value of approximately US$1. With a few notable exceptions where the price decoupled from USD by more than a few cents, this has mostly stayed true. This is despite Tether never verifying its USD reserves with an independent audit, and Tether Limiteds own lawyer stating in 2019 that each USDT was in reality backed by just US$0.74 real dollars.

Few businesses accept USDT as payment, and for the large part its an exchange-only asset. There are currently over 9 billion Tethers in existence demand goes up when BTC falls, and falls when BTC rises. In 2018, USDT trades reportedly made up 80% of BTC trading volume.

Both Bitfinex and Tether have been the subject of numerous lawsuits and regulatory investigations. In 2019, New York Attorney General Letitia James alleged Bitfinex had used Tethers reserves to cover a US$850 million loss after transferring similar amounts without contract to a Panamanian firm called Crypto Capital. Though unproven, many critics have claimed Tether may not be backed by anything at all, and that it is a kind of digital fiat currency used to drive BTC price up or down.

Despite the seismic legal ground on which USDT exists, and the dubious explanations for its market value/price peg, exchange speculators appear willing to trust the coin enough to use it in trades with other digital assets.

Tether drives BTC, which influences all the others

Looking at the charts, its clear there is a relationship between price movements across the top market cap digital assets. BTC, XRP, ETH, BCH, BSVeven ADA, EOS, and Tezoshave all risen and fallen on similar trendlines over the past week. Though there are occasionally exceptions to this trend, non-ideological traders dont see enough difference between digital assets to make large bets on one over another. Digital asset prices seem to reflect general sentiment towards the blockchain space, rather than careful analysis of one assets long-term feasibility.

Bitfinex also supports BSV/USD trading. Newly-minted Tethers land at exchanges whether they support or eschew BSV. So Bitcoin (and other assets) also come under Tethers price influence.

The Bitcoin SV community, however, views this as neither feasible nor desirable. Sudden rises and falls are not good for Bitcoin and theyre not healthy for any other asset. Volatility like this only attracts speculators and gamblers, raise regulators eyebrows, and prevent blockchain from being taken seriously. Its the reason digital assets arent used much for anything other than trading, and the HODL mentality that deters users from actually spending Bitcoin. Why spend now when it could be worth 50 times as much a year from now? (if only briefly).

Mainstream media articles bring in new investors as the price rises. BTC speculators sell their coins to these new investors when the price is high, and the price then falls. Exchanges like Bitfinex and Binance add to the frenzy with ridiculously high leveraged trading. All the while, there may not even be any real money entering the market.

Thats not how you build a new digital economy. Bitcoin must be useful and usable if its to play a major role in the future. BSVs value proposition is micropayments, secure/immutable data processing for enterprise and government, and high transaction volumes. Its far better for the BSV price to rise gradually, or stay the same, if this is to happen. Look at the financial successes of multi-generational business empires versus lottery winners for an example.

What would happen to BTC (and in turn, most digital assets) if the USDT rug were suddenly pulled out from underneath them? Given Tethers history, economy and precarious legal situation, its very possible. Commentators have even discussed the possibility for years, but mostly within the interest community. The mainstream media rarely if ever discusses it.

Lets have a real Bitcoin economy instead

Satoshi Nakamoto never wanted Bitcoin to be a recurring speculative souffle, and any sensible investor would observe that such assets are poor long-term bets. The BTC community has done little to promote its actual use as money, and price talk dominates the conversation.

Bitcoin BSV didnt just restore Satoshis vision by restoring and locking the original Bitcoin protocol. It also restored Bitcoins original promise to create a new economy based on micropayments and data processing; a true digital and internet-native financial network.

BSVs economy is based on real economic incentives for its transaction processors. It removed the block size limits (which were never part of the original protocol) to create a Bitcoin economy driven by real utility and small fees in large volumes. The BSV community prefers real users to fake dollars and inflated prices to pay old bagholders with the new ones money. Theres another word for that kind of scheme, and its one no serious person should want associated with Bitcoin.
