The Jordan Spieth thrill ride remains full of twists and turns – ESPN

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The ball sailed toward the trees, and as bad tee shots go, this was not one of Jordan Spieth's worst. He's hit enough of them in recent times to know.

This one clanked off a tree, however -- and kicked out of bounds.

Spieth is also familiar with bad breaks, as they seem to pile up when things are not going so well.

The three-time major champion has found some success in the PGA Tour's return to golf the past two weeks, but the last time he won a tournament, Tiger Woods had yet to swing a golf club in the aftermath of spinal fusion surgery.

So while Spieth has done an excellent job of trying to take the long view in rebuilding his swing and his game, there is still a bit of urgency whenever there is any level of success. The road remains bumpy.

Last week he tied for 10th at the Charles Schwab Challenge after being in contention all weekend, only to shoot a lackluster final-round 71.

On Thursday, he opened the RBC Heritage by making a triple-bogey 7 due to that wayward tee shot on just his third hole, the queasy feeling of all these up-and-down adventures of the last few years returning.

And then ... he settled down.

At one point, Spieth hit 11 consecutive greens at Harbour Town Golf Club. He made six birdies in a row. And after a kick-in birdie at the ninth hole, his last, Spieth had a 5-under-par 66 and found himself high on the leaderboard again.

"[Thursday's first round] wasn't really a roller coaster,'' said Spieth, who made eight birdies and that lone triple to finish two strokes back of leaders Ian Poulter and Mark Hubbard. "That triple was a bogey at worst if it doesn't ricochet 25 yards out of bounds. Certainly Sunday last week was, and that was my first time in that position in right around two years -- being anywhere near within three strokes of the lead starting a Sunday.''

That he was that close gave hope to the notion that Spieth could win for the first time since capturing The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017. That was his third major title and 11th PGA Tour win.

It had been a remarkable run for Spieth, who had 14 worldwide victories from 2013 to 2017, won five times on the PGA Tour in 2015 -- when he won the Masters and U.S. Open, tied for fourth at The Open and finished second at the PGA Championship.

Spieth won the FedEx Cup that year and was still ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in 2017.

But he came into the RBC Heritage ranked 55th in the world after dropping to 44th at the end of 2019. He fell out of the top 50 for the first time since 2013, which was not long after he turned professional.

In the past year, Spieth has no top-five finishes, just four top-10s and 11 results of 20th or worse with two missed cuts.

Spieth said he used the break caused by the coronavirus pandemic to reassess, treating it like an offseason. The reasons for the layoff were bad, he said, but Spieth tried to take advantage of the time away from tour golf.

"It was a strong focal point of the last few months, how can I get better physically, mentally and within the mechanics of my golf game, and then what's the right process to start to put that in place, and it's not something that clicks and all of a sudden you're just automatically the best player in the world,'' Spieth said. "It's certainly a process. But creating the right little habits that get me back on track was a big emphasis during the last few months.

"I approached the first third to first half as an offseason to kind of regroup, and I trained as if it was offseason, but then I didn't hit a ton of golf balls. We've got a good time frame now to make adjustments going forward for this next stretch, where it's a really good time to get hot as we head into August through the next August when you've got seven majors in a 12-month period including a Ryder Cup and a couple FedExCups.

"I looked at it as a big-time opportunity for myself and didn't take it lightly. I was certainly grateful for the time. Certainly it's not a positive situation in general, but for me personally, I tried to look at how can I make this an advantage to myself.''

Spieth has now shot four of his five rounds the last two weeks under par, with Sunday's 71 that included an out-of-bounds tee shot and a missed putt from under 2 feet marring his chances to contend. He's also made 30 birdies over that stretch.

After the triple bogey on Thursday, he rebounded with a birdie on the next hole, then hit every green on the front side -- his final nine -- to make seven birdies and shoot 29.

"I expect to be not quite that sharp yet,'' he said. "You start to feel more comfortable the more experiences you get. Today had nothing to do with last Sunday. Again, it wasn't too bad of a tee ball that ended up out of bounds. So I just tried to tell myself that I've been driving the ball really well and that if you're putting it in play off the tee here, you're going to get some wedge opportunities.''

Spieth remains committed to what he is doing, confident he will emerge as one of the best in the game again. He's never wavered from that, even if it remains a bit of a wild ride.

Freshman Receiver Jordan Johnson Needs Early Action – Sports Illustrated

Notre Dame has done quite well recruiting the wide receiver position throughout Brian Kellys tenure in South Bend. That continued with a strong 2020 group of pass catchers, and the highest ranked player in that group is St. Louis native Jordan Johnson.

Johnson was a consensus Top 100 recruit, checking in between No. 28 (Rivals) and No. 61 (247Sports) nationally by the three main recruiting services. Rivals ranked him as a five-star recruit and the nations No. 5 pass catcher.

That made Johnson the highest ranked receiver recruit to select Notre Dame since Michael Floyd signed with the Irish back in 2008.

Notre Dames depth chart at wide receiver returns a lot of players and a lot of talent, but Johnson is the kind of player who needs to find a home as a freshman. This doesnt mean he needs to start, or even be a number two, that needs to be earned. Passing up returners wont be easy, but Johnson is also not a five-year player, so only playing him in four games would be a waste.

Assuming Johnson comes into camp in good shape and focused mentally he needs to have a role early in the season. Getting him at least five to ten snaps per game would be ideal, and as he gets more and more comfortable his role can expand. It should be part of an overall plan at the position to play a deep rotation early in the season, and Johnson needs to be a part of that.

Johnson has the skillset to play any wide receiver position in the Irish offense. The staff cannot ask him, or any freshman, to have as full of a grasp of the offense as veterans. Therefore, the plan should be to do what Clark Lea and the defensive staff have done with talented young players, find out what he is comfortable with and build around it.

Simply put, Johnson and classmate Xavier Watts need to play in 2020.

Heres my analysis of Johnson as a prep player:

Johnson is an intriguing wide receiver target. He lacks any elite physical traits, but his all-around skillset makes him one of the top players in the country. He finished his prep career with 83 catches for 2,033 yards (24.5 YPC) and 27 touchdowns. Johnson had to play defense as a senior for a DeSmet squad that finished undefeated and won a state championship.

Listed at 6-2 and just 180 pounds, Johnson is a strong athlete that has impressive length, which allows him to play bigger than he is. He shows a good burst off the line, gets to full speed in a hurry and quickly eats up the cushion of defensive backs. Johnson has impressive foot quickness and loose hips, traits that give him the potential to develop into an elite route runner in college. His suddenness and burst allows Johnson to explode out of breaks and get separation.

Johnson has long arms and strong hands, which gives him an impressive catch radius. His ability to out-play defenders for the football is as good as youll find in the country. Johnsons body control, length and ability to track the ball makes him a big-time weapon on the outside as a downfield weapon and back-shoulder pass catcher. He can catch the ball in traffic and do damage after the catch. At times hell lose focus and drop a pass or two, but his pass catching skills are otherwise elite.

Johnsons ball skills and athleticism fit perfectly into Notre Dames boundary receiver position, but his route running and athletic traits also project well to the field positions, and that versatility only adds to his value as a prospect.

Jordan City Council gives Brewers the green light to play ball – SW News Media

The Jordan Brewers may soon run the bases of the Mini-Met despite restrictions laid out in Gov. Tim Walz Executive Order 20-74.

The Jordan City Council adopted a COVID-19 preparedness plan Monday night for organizing adult sports at the town ballpark, paving the way for the Brewers to take part in the Minnesota Baseball Associations 2020 season.

The council adopted the plan despite the governors June 9 order limiting outdoor gatherings. In researching the issue, City Administrator Tom Nikunen said the governors office was clear on their stance.

The governors office says the intent of Executive Order No. 74 was to not allow games to be played, Nikunen said in a council memo.

Nikunen also consulted the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trusts risk management attorney Chris Smith, who said the citys liability in the event someone contract COVID-19 at a ballgame is relatively low.

They will represent us if there is a lawsuit, Nikunen said. They think that our chance of having liability in this instance, if somebody were to get sick, that would be hard to prove.

The resolution was adopted by a 4-1 vote, with Councilwoman Amanda Schuh opposed. Councilman Bill Heimkes abstained due to technological difficulties that interfered with the teleconference. Councilman Robert Whipps said he wants the Brewers to play ball but decided to abstain.

I dont think I should be telling people to go violate the executive order, so Im not going to give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down but Ill tell you straight to your face thats the reason why Im not doing it, Whipps said.

Mayor Tanya Velishek and councilmen Jeff Will, Terry Stier and Jeremy Goebel voted to approve the resolution. Goebel said prohibiting baseball in light of the recent weeks activities is hypocritical.

Theyre playing baseball in every small town around us and the same hypocrite whos making these rules and telling us we cant do it is out protesting with 5,000 people telling us on TV that its OK, but they next day you cant play baseball? Cmon.

According to Nikunen, Brewers General Manager John Breunig said the team probably wont be ready to play immediately, as the field and concession stand require upkeep.

47-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL JORDAN SCHOOLS STEPHEN JACKSON How does the leather taste in your mouth – Basketball Network

One of the biggest lessons taken from The Last Dance would probably have to be dont ever talk trash to Michael Jordan. Not on the basketball court, not if youre playing cards, never!

Stories shown in the documentary confirm the thesis, as weve witnessed numerous times players talking trash to MJ, with it eventually backfiring. Thats just what Jordan is made of. He wont tolerate it. The only thing youll be doing is adding fuel to the fire. And the fire is already big enough.

That all being said, some people never learn. They have to have the experience to learn from it. Thankfully for us, because it results in some fantastic stories. This one took place in the 2010-11 NBA season. You must be wondering can it involve MJ; he mustve been 50ish by that time; he was 47 to be exact. But it didnt stop him from occasionally lacing em up and joining Charlottes scrimmage.

This time, he had Stephen Jackson on the other side. The matchup of Jordan vs. Jackson doesnt sound that attractive. But keep in mind, Jordan was 48 and had stopped playing professional basketball in 2003. And Jackson, at the time, was an 18 points scorer, leading the team in PPG. But what they both had is a high trash-talking skill, as they were both known for talking smack.

Michael joined the scrimmage, bringing some reinforcement with him. Jackson couldnt resist. He went on the record numerous times, calling MJ the GOAT, but this time, he didnt care. And you know MJ went right back at him, as the scrimmage turned to their battle.

We were going through a rough patch. Michael decided to jump in and [bring Charles Oakley] on his team. Stephen Jackson, being Stephen Jackson, started talking trash. Jackson said, that was the past, this is now, and I will bust your ass. Michael got furious, trash-talking and killing him and all of us, telling Stephen Jackson, how does the leather taste in your mouth after every shot. Then it became a 1-on-1. It did not end up well for Stephen Jackson. Michael won. It was incredible. It was good for the team, and we snapped out of the losing streak we had.

MJs team lost the scrimmage, but he did win a different battle a trash-talking one. For 48-year old team owner, that may have been the more important one to win. As of Stephen Jackson, he admitted that his smack-talking abilities werent up to par with Jordans. He said himself that that was the only battle of that sort that he ended up losing.

And how could he win? Jordan brought up his six championships, spicing it up with all the accolades he had won over his playing career. He finished it up, saying to Jackson that he has to remember hes playing on his team and that Michael is the one paying his check. Ouch! Theres no comeback to that.

But was it worth it, though? Jackson said that he didnt speak to Michael after that day. He also got traded the next year, losing a shoe deal in the process. Is Michael that petty that this was some sort of revenge for losing the scrimmage? I hope not. Stephen said it all jokingly, but I guess you never know with number 23.

Stephen, I hope youve learned your lesson. Dont underestimate the man even in his late 40s because that competitiveness inside Jordan will never grow old.

Article 22 of the GDPR Should Not Preclude Contemplated Automation – CircleID

This post was co-authored by Russell Pangborn and Brigid Mahoney of Seed IP Law Group.

There is an ongoing disagreement among various members and groups in the ICANN community regarding automation namely, whether and to what extent automation can be used to disclose registrant data in response to legitimate data disclosure requests. A major contributing factor to the complications around automation has been confusion about how to interpret and apply Article 22 of the GDPR. In its opening paragraph, Article 22 dictates that: "The data subject shall have the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, which produces legal effects concerning him or her or similarly significantly affects him or her."

Indeed, the GNSO Expedited Policy Development Process Team on the Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data Phase 2 (EPDP) has been bogged down by this very question. Several prominent voices, such as those from the Registries Stakeholder Group and Registrar Stakeholder Group (RySG and RrSG, respectively) and legal feedback from Bird & Bird LLP, have advocated a "conservative" approach that assumes such automation would be regulated and thus not permitted by Article 22. But a newly-published article by Mike Hintze, partner and privacy law specialist with the firm Hintze Law, opines that Article 22 does not apply to the automated processing contemplated for the System for Standardized Access/Disclosure (SSAD). Based on a comprehensive analysis of the language, policy, and provided explanations of the GDPR itself, this article concludes that "Article 22 should rarely if ever apply to automated decisions to disclose personal data to a third party."

First, the article breaks down the above-quoted language of Article 22 to demonstrate that it would not just be inappropriate, but flat-out incorrect, to apply Article 22 regulations to automated processing and disclosure of registrant data in response to legitimate disclosure requests. Specifically, the article highlights Article 22's certainty requirement that the automatic disclosure "produces legal effects concerning him or her or similarly significantly affects him or her" (emphasis added). Note this language does not say "may produce," or "is likely to produce," suggesting there must be a degree of certainty that the automatic decision inherently will affect the data subject in a legal or similarly significant way. If such certainty were not inherent, how would the data producer be able to make such a determination in advance? As applied to the automation issue at hand, it is not certain that the disclosure of personal data will inherently result in a legal or similarly significant effect the third party receiving the data may choose to do nothing with the information.

If the third party does, however, choose to take action against the data subject that has legal or similarly significant effect, the automatic disclosure is at best an indirect cause of such effect. While the GDPR does not explicitly address the direct vs. indirect causation question, Hintze notes that the GDPR's text and practical examples demonstrate direct causation scenarios only as those falling under Article 22. If the GDPR drafters wanted to include under Article 22 automated decisions that could have an indirect legal or similarly significant effect, the drafters could have included such language. To assume indirect, "butterfly effect" type causation was intended to be included by the drafters is to believe the drafters intentionally created an impossible-to-escape maze where all avenues lead back to Article 22 any automated decision could indirectly result in a legal or similarly significant effect if one were to follow the chain of causation far enough.

Furthermore, the article quells potential concerns that automated decision-making for the disclosure of personal data would be left entirely unregulated if not under the purview of Article 22. To the contrary, the article points out, the GDPR contains other provisions that are more suitable for protecting data subjects' rights with respect to automated processing. For example, Article 6 requires a lawful basis for automated decision-making and for processing the disclosure of personal data to a third party. Advocates for automated responses to disclosure requests universally understand and support that there must be an underlying lawful basis, such as requests from law enforcement and in response to Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy/Uniform Rapid Suspension System (UDRP/URS) providers for registrant verification in an active UDRP/URS proceeding. Additional examples that have been proposed as appropriate for automation include well-founded allegations of intellectual property infringement, phishing, fraud, and other similar matters of consumer protection, all of which comply with Article 6's requirement for a legal basis.

This article contributes an important, fresh, and well-grounded perspective to the discussion around automation and the GDPR. While Registries and Registrars may justify their position as ensuring they abide by the privacy rules set out by the GDPR, the well-reasoned analysis put forth by Hintze shows that there is no need to treat the automated processing contemplated for the SSAD as if it were regulated by Article 22. To do so is unnecessary and alarmist, and results in a misplaced and overbroad application of GDPR regulations to the detriment of the smooth functioning of the DNS system.

Free from the restrictions imposed by Article 22, it is important that the EPDP fully embraces and includes automation in its Final Report. Large-scale enforcement efforts by law enforcement, cybersecurity, and brand owners require automation to achieve meaningful results and improve online safety for end-users. Without access to automation, as currently stands, such enforcement efforts are routinely hampered by impractical and tedious reveal requests, which are all too often ignored, and thus require subsequent legal action such as filing a UDRP or lawsuit just to obtain registrant information. This convoluted process is inefficient, excessively time-consuming, and ultimately enables bad actors to continue carrying out DNS abuse in the absence of essential, effective tools for enforcement efforts. The health of the ICANN community and overall DNS system will thus benefit immensely from allowing automated processing and disclosure of registrant data in response to legitimate disclosure requests. As Hintze's article concludes, this can be done without fear of violating Article 22 of the GDPR as it does not apply to the automation contemplated by the EPDP.

How COVID-19 is set to speed up the adoption of automation technologies – YourStory.com

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an economic turmoil, where industries and businesses have come to a standstill.Organisations are also suffering losses due to the shortfall in productivity due to the lockdown.

In this scenario, one of the leading ecommerce players in India, which has a warehouse spread over 100,000 square feet, faced the challenge of carrying out quality checks on all the goods that were coming into the facility.

Being a very human-intensive exercise, the company had to engage with a computer vision startup to deploy its automation technologies to do the job.

Automation technologies have been around for some time, with their deployment at various levels like chatbots, automated tele-calling, voice assistants, or the industrialised robotic environment. But now, the trigger has come in the form of COVID-19, where there seems to be an urgency to deploy these technologies.

Indian IT industry body Nasscom, in a report title COVID-19 Tipping for automation", says the pandemic has acted as a catalyst for the development of automation technologies.

While the financial services sector has been one of the early adopters of automation technologies with likes of banks, insurance companies, etc., the manufacturing and ecommerce sectors have stepped up their automation efforts. However, sectors which have lower digitisation capability are generally slower in adopting automation.

Milan Sheth, Executive Vice President India, Middle East, and Africa East region, Automation Anywhere, a robotic process automation unicorn, says,

According to him, companies and industries are increasingly relying on automation to ensure there is continuity in operations, faster return on investment, and it has the ability to generate revenue even during these times.

He cites the example of car insurance, which requires onsite inspection, and hence human interaction. In this time of COVID-19, one can do it remotely by doing the inspection through the computer vision platform, thereby minimising the risk, and also generating revenue for the insurance company.

Umesh Sachdev, Co-founder of Uniphore, a conversational AI startup, says, the multifold increase in the number of calls over the last three months reveals the need for automation and AI.

It is a rude shock for companies being forced to take this decision. There is uncertainty, but clients want AI to automate their business, he remarks.

Accordingto AccenturesFuture Systems research, whereit conducted a survey on 8,300 companies before the COVID-19 crisis, only 10 percent of the companies had cracked the code on systems resilience.

The report clearly says artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are the way forward. In the future, key markers of adaptable organisations include enterprise-wide use of automation and AI, a continuous data supply chain in the cloud to power the AI in the enterprise, and a stable but modular, flexible, and constantly evolving architecture. About 94 percent of leaders systematically track ROIs in automation across the organisation, compared to only 47 percent of laggards.

Typically, whenever there is a crisis, the level of interaction among humans increases, and in the current situation, there is a need for automation to handle the increased load.

According to Umesh, many BPO centres have witnessed 4X traffic, and Uniphores AI platform allowed them to monitor the calls using speech-to-text platform.

UiPath, a global RPA unicorn, with its R&D centre in Bengaluru, stated that as COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact business operations, organisations around the world are facing extreme challenges, including the increased need in customer support.

For example, OTP Bank Romania is using an automation solution that integrates the capabilities of both Druid chatbots and UiPaths software robots to process requests to postpone bank loan instalments. The integration allowed the bank to cut down the processing time of a single request from 10 minutes to 20 seconds, and cope with a 125 percent increase in the number of calls received by call centre agents, enabling it to process three times more deferral requests with the same number of people in the back office.

Automation has also stepped into the area of human resource management (HRM) in a major way.

Eightfold, the talent intelligence platform, is able to match individuals and opportunities based on their potential to succeed in a role, rather than look at their past success through its AI platform.

This, in turn, increases efficiency, reduces the time taken for the entire process, and also results in cost savings.

There is also the deployment of AI and automation in an area like agriculture. Plantix, an agritech startup founded by Rob Strey and Simone Strey, which has its base in Hyderabad and Berlin, leverages AI and automation to help farmers.

The company uses AI to identify plant diseases, pests, and nutrient deficiencies. The only thing the farmer needs to do is click an image of the crop with the app installed on the smartphone and the software identifies the problem. Plantix then gives recommendations to find the right product, which helps fight the disease. The app also gives disease alert to farmers.

As many as 1.2 million farmers use the app at least once per month, says Simone.

The jury is still out on what will be the impact on jobs with the onset of automation. It is expected that there would be some loss of jobs, but it is unlikely to be large scale as automation technologies is still in its early days.

Today, automation is not just about ensuring efficiency or cutting down the costs, but it can be a key enabler for revenue generation.

The pace of automation is certainly going to increase in the days to come, and the adoption level among companies and sector can vary.

Milan of Automation Anywhere says, The progressive ones in the automation strategy are those companies which are digital-ready and the same cannot be said of those who have not digitised enough.

Automation can also bring other benefits, which a normal human being in a repetitive task might find it a strain. There is a significant increase in the adoption of automation technologies as it removes subjectivity and makes it contactless. These automation platforms have the ability to continuously learn, which makes it much more superior, says Ajith of Camcom.

Escalating Demand for Top Industrial Automation Amid COVID-19 to Record Sharp Growth through Pandemic - Medic Insider

Extra Shot: Cloud Native and Automation – TelecomTV

The third edition of Extra Shot focuses on cloud native and automation, picking up on comments and views expressed during the DSP Leaders World Forum sessions. In fact, a number of discussions during DSP Leaders World Forum covered cloud native, with lots of panellists commenting on developments, opportunities and challenges, but where are we in terms of real demand for cloud native capabilities? We also wanted to learn what role industry bodies such as the CNTT and the ETSI NFV ISG will play and whether they do different things.

Closely associated with virtualized and cloud native functionality is automation operators need to introduce automated processes into their operations in order to manage their next-generation networks in an efficient way. But whilst automated processes are going to really help CSPs, it isnt easy to introduce true, zero touch automation. Furthermore, will it help operators achieve their 5G ambitions?

Naturally, we asked our special guests about their hot beverage preferences

Cisco Live Keynote: Focus on Health, Security, Automation, and Doing the Right Thing – IT Business Edge

Ciscos huge customer event Cisco Live was virtualized and moved to this week. This was the first virtual event Ive done with a focus on networking and communication. CEO Chuck Robbins did the opening keynote, and he has stood out as one of the most passionate folks when it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility and taking care of both customers and employees during these difficult times.

He opened by pointing out that according to surveys, 73% of the folks surveyed are under some form of severe mental stress. Robbins has been on a mission to reduce that stress by focusing on connecting people that need to be connected (like those under quarantine) and automating the tools Cisco sells. In addition, throughout the keynote he wove in elements of Corporate Social Responsibility, showcasing the impressive way Cisco and its customers helped during these difficult times.

Cisco Live was one of the better-run keynotes with a blend of talking, videos, and additional speakers who made the event comparatively more engaging than most Ive seen.

Lets talk about my impressions.

One of the first significant messages was that Cisco has a substantial focus on getting their customers up and running for this new Pandemic normal. Robbins praised the IT folks his people worked with repeatedly for taking on the related tasks aggressively, both protecting their fellow employees and the business. Something like 88% of them, when surveyed, indicated they had become far more strategic during this Pandemic catastrophe.

Cisco itself was at the forefront of this change, shifting 98% of its workforce to remote over a matter of days. The lessons from this move made Cisco far more capable of helping their customers. However, Robbins called out some customers, like Met Life, who had already made a significant investment that allowed them to make the shift quickly, effectively, and with little drama.

Throughout the event, Cisco called out customer after customer who had executed wellpraising the IT teams who went above and beyond. This praise is crucial because IT has had to massively shift support while they, too, are suffering from the related health risks. Presenting them as heroes helps overcome the belief that their efforts were under-appreciated (and it was not only really nice, but the right thing to do).

One example was a Honeywell superhero video that showcased how they rapidly went from 35K remote workers to over 100K. They also spoke to news services like CNN that are aggressively using the technology to connect their now remote guests and hosts to the studio. In doing this, news programming wasnt more adversely impacted.

Cisco has internally been doing massive readjustments. They reimagined (and are continuing to reimagine) applications, looking at better ways to secure data when dealing with a remote workforce, transforming their infrastructure, and empowering their now remote teams. What they learned doing this is being shared with customers who are having to go through the same process. One area getting a lot of focus is the customer experience. Engagement has become more complicated, and the tools and people are undergoing a process that will make them fare more effective under these new conditions.

To address the massive increase in workload for an IT organization, Cisco is advancing its AI ML (Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning) capabilities so that the tools will increasingly become a force multiplier for IT and be able to move towards autonomy for the future.

The significant difference with Cisco Live is the embedding of Corporate Social Responsibility. Tae Yoos team working with Robbins has done a fantastic job integrating this concept throughout this event. Most often, CSR is a separate item to be checked off a list, not built into the firms culture.

This separation lowers the overall impact of the effort and makes it look like it is more smoke than substance. By integrating their efforts to make the world a better place throughout the event, they made it a part of their companys image and culture, establishing it as a far more critical part of Cisco in the eyes of this audience.

As a result, I think most left this event feeling far more positive about Cisco. To Stella Low and her team that put on the analyst portion of this event: excellent work!

Nanosponges Could Be Used To Prevent COVID-19: UCSD Researchers – Patch.com

SAN DIEGO, CA UC San Diego announced Wednesday that technology known as "nanosponges" developed by its engineers could work as a decoy to attract the virus that causes COVID-19 and divert it from infecting human cells.

Researchers say lab experiments conducted at Boston University have shown promising signs that the nanosponge platform inhibits SARS-CoV-2's viral infectivity, or its ability to enter host cells and replicate the virus.

The nanosponges are cloaked in membranes from human cells such as lung epithelial and immune cells, which the virus would latch onto instead of actual human cells. UCSD says experiments have shown both lung cell and immune cell types of nanosponges have caused the virus to lose nearly 90% of its viral infectivity.

Don't miss local and statewide news about coronavirus developments and precautions. Sign up for Patch news alerts and newsletters.

Liangfang Zhang, a nanoengineering professor at the UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, said the nanosponge platform was created more than a decade ago, but researchers recently began looking into its potential applications against COVID-19.

"Traditionally, drug developers for infectious diseases dive deep on the details of the pathogen in order to find druggable targets. Our approach is different. We only need to know what the target cells are. And then we aim to protect the targets by creating biomimetic decoys," Zhang said.Researchers anticipate the nanosponges would also work against new mutations of the coronavirus.

"Another interesting aspect of our approach is that even as SARS-CoV- 2 mutates, as long as the virus can still invade the cells we are mimicking, our nanosponge approach should still work. I'm not sure this can be said for some of the vaccines and therapeutics that are currently being developed," Zhang said.

The efficacy of the nanosponges will be evaluated in animal models in the next few months, although "significant" testing must be done before its efficacy in humans can be tested, according to UCSD.

Mini Sponges Decoy the Coronavirus Before it Latches on to Lung Cells – Interesting Engineering

Here's a great thought: imagine if scientists had the ability to stop and detract the coronavirus before it latches on and infects lung cells and replicates itself.

Boston University (BU) researchers at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) and the University of California San Diego have found a way do to just that.

Their method involves using new nanotechnology in the form of a 'decoy sponge.'

Their findings were published in Nano Letters on Wednesday.

SEE ALSO: HOW HAS NANOTECHNOLOGY PROGRESSED OVER THE YEARS?

The coronavirus is small but mighty, and now its counterpart may be just as small and just as mighty. The BU team's new technology could have some major positive implications in the continued fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. What's even better about it is that it'll potentially be able to be used to fight against any other virus.

"I was skeptical at the beginning because it seemed too good to be true," said NEIDL microbiologistAnna Honko, one of the first authors on the study. "But when I saw the first set of results in the lab, I was just astonished."

The new technology is made up of little, nanosized drops of polymers a bit like a mini sponge that are covered with fragments of living lung cell and immune cell membranes.

The way the coronavirus operates is that it seeks and finds lung cell membranes and then latches onto them. Then the infection takes hold as the virus replicates itself through these lung cells.

What the BU team discovered was that by coating their polymers with lung cells, these attracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus better than the regular lung cells. This makes the new technology an interesting and useful countermeasure to coronavirus infection.

"Our guess is that it acts like a decoy, it competes with cells for the virus," explained NEIDL microbiologistAnthony Griffiths, co-author on the study. "They are little bits of plastic, just containing the outer pieces of cells with none of the internal cellular machinery contained inside living cells. Conceptually, its such a simple idea. It mops up the virus like a sponge."

The team believes that their newly-discovered technology could be used in the form of a nasal spray, making it a nice and easy method to combat the virus.

The team is also especially excited to find out just how far it can push this technology, by seeing how many other viruses it can detract as well something that would be integral around the world.

"Im interested in seeing how far we can push this technology," Honko said.

FIRST EVER ROCKET LAUNCHED FROM THE SHETLANDS – FutureScot

Edinburgh-based Skyrora successfully launched its Skylark Nano rocket from the Scottish island this week.

Reaching an altitude of six kilometers, this marked the third time the 2-meter (6.5ft) projectile took to the skies.

The launch was completed for educational purposes, collecting meteorological data, measuring wind profiles, analysing the vehicles trajectory and providing critical training in support of Skyroras future plans.

Skyrora invited local journalists to attend the launch and to be apart of the education and learning process. All social distancing measures were met during the launch days.

Robin Hague, Head of Launch said: The launch signifies a vital step towards Skyroras ambitions to become the UKs go-to satellite launch provider. Were ecstatic and truly proud. This is a great success for Skylark Nano, and the Skyrora team in general.

Launching from Shetland is very important for us because its a potential option for our Skyrora XL orbital commercial launch vehicle. To understand the local launch conditions learning more about the wind profiles in Shetland is critical.

Skylark Nanos third successive launch is testament to the engineers who have worked tirelessly to bring to life a reusable rocket that can provide valuable intelligence for the future of the UK space programme.

It comes after Skyrora successfully completed a full static fire test on their Skylark-L launch vehicle.

Volodymyr Levykin, CEO, said: With this successful launch from Shetland we are further closing the gap to making the UK a rocket launching nation again.

Skylark Nanos first launch took place in Ross-shire in summer 2018, with the firm continuing to develop cutting-edge research and technology ahead of its first planned commercial orbital launches. Expanding their company across Scotland will allow them to leverage the highly skilled workforce available with their aim of creating 170 jobs by the end of 2023.

Skyrora is developing launch vehicle technology that builds on previous rocket systems with the aim of reducing the cost of launches thanks to proven technology and advanced engineering methods.

The firm draws on Britains launch heritage and aims to build a robust supply chain while creating new employment opportunities to inspire the next generation of talent.
