There Are No Spiritual Growth Hacks, We’ve Got to Train – Team Jesus Magazine

Growing up, sports were my life. When I got to high school, I realized that I had to train with more focus and intensity than previously acceptable. I needed to get bigger, stronger, and faster. Over 95% of an athletes time is spent training and less than 5% competing.

Training prepares us for game time. We make sacrifices in order to get better. Tim Tebow says, Hard work always beats talent when talent doesnt work hard. Some athletes want the results without the work, but thats not the way it works. Our desire needs to be matched by our doing.

Spiritually speaking, many of us spend very little time training for life on Team Jesus. Our spiritual growth is spotty at best, and we often wonder why we arent farther along in our walk with Christ. Many of us wonder, Why wont God put me in the game? Well, there are reasons. God knows when our spiritual growth is ready for game time (Jeremiah 12:5), and the Holy Spirit is ready to lead us into all Truth (John 16:13) if and when we make the time to train.

Sure, we call it devotions, but we arent very devoted. We call it quiet time, but how often do we rush through the calm to tackle the chaos of the day?

If were honest, most of us dont even have a plan. And, our hit-and-miss approach to spiritual growth is littered with excuses that were too tired or too busy. We need to put ourselves in position for God to do what only He can do transform us from the inside out.

We need to show up and put in some spiritual training time. Team Jesus cant just be a group of weekend warriors. If we want to experience real-life change, we have to train.

Make a sacrifice, get a plan, and show up for the workout. There are no shortcuts to godliness.

We must do the training and let God do the changing. Think about it.

So, Whats The Play call?

Prayer:

Father, give me the desire and discipline to begin and stick with a spiritual training program that increases the capacity of my heart and soul. When I show up and train, you will bring change from the inside out. Amen.

Post-workout stretch:

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.- 2 Peter 1:3-4

They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Hebrews 12:10-12

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyednot only in my presence but now much more in my absencecontinue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13

Carriers go contactless with BOLs and other docs due to COVID – Commercial Carrier Journal

Before the coronavirus pandemic, few could have imagined that paper shipping documents would become a health hazard. They were merely an inconvenience for drivers and office clerks to handle as part of the payroll and billing process.

When social distancing became the norm, new technology quickly emerged to digitally exchange bills of lading (BOLs) and capture signatures for proof of delivery (POD) documents to keep drivers safe and for office staff working remotely.

Contactless transactions

Speeding the flow of POD documents had already been simplified with mobile apps that drivers use to capture images remotely. What changed during the COVID-19 pandemic is that more shippers no longer print BOLs but instead send digital documents to carriers before drivers arrive to pick up loads.

EBE Technologies uses a secure application from SignEasy to capture a signature on a POD document.

Carriers receive the electronic BOLs via email typically as PDF attachments or as direct feeds into their transportation management software using electronic data interchange (EDI), said Larry Kerr, president of EBE Technologies, which provides workflow-based systems for transportation companies.

When picking up a load, shippers that use electronic BOLs may still give drivers a paper copy to take with them during transit.

EBE Technologies has a new eBOL module for carriers to use with its SHIPS document management and workflow automation platform. When carriers receive an electronic BOL from shippers, the software sends it to drivers before they make a pickup.

The eBOL goes to EBEs Connect Mobile Capture app, or to any third-party app that drivers and carriers use, he said.

When drivers arrive for a delivery the apps give drivers the option to email the eBOL to the consignee to sign electronically. EBE uses an electronic signature application from SignEasy, which gives the signee the option to sign the POD using a mouse or finger.

The eBOL module can automatically email the document to the consignee from the integration EBE has with the fleets dispatch software. The integration validates the delivery has taken place using location data from a telematics platform or stop code from the dispatch system, Kerr said.

The signee gets a confirmation email as soon as the document is signed and sent to the dispatch system, he said. When the eBOL is in transit to the office, the SHIPs platform can use optical character recognition to extract information to automate data entry and validate information such as addresses, BOL numbers or notations for over, short or damaged freight.

Expanding the footprint

Transflo, formerly Pegasus TransTech, has always had products and services used by carriers, freight brokers and drivers to speed the flow of proof-of-delivery documents. During the COVID-19 crisis, leaders decided to expand to help shippers and consignees go paperless, explained Doug Schrier, vice president of product and innovation.

Transflo added a contactless option for drivers to receive BOLs and signed PODs from shippers and receivers.

Creating a digital process for all shippers and receivers would be a complex undertaking since each company uses different software systems and has unique processes for loading and unloading.

To solve the challenge, Transflo started with a large footprint, he said, with more than one million drivers using its Transflo Mobile+ app and truck stop scanning network at more than 3,000 locations. Rather than develop a standard process for shippers and receivers, Transflo gathers their individual requirements to create an integrated eBOL and ePOD process.

Georgia-Pacific, one of the nations largest shippers, is one of the early adopters of the integrated eBOL and ePOD systems from Transflo.

When a driver breaks a geofence at a location, the app walks the driver through the unique workflow of the shipper or receiver to check in and receive or send an electronic BOL for signature. The email or phone number associated with the account is preloaded.

Nothing has to happen beyond the normal workflow of marking something completed and shipped, Schrier said.

Transflo has another option for shippers or receivers that do not have an integrated process. A shipper can upload a PDF document or send a BOL to Transflo through EDI, he said. When the document is received, Transflo sends the eBOL to the driver in Transflo Mobile+ with a notification.

When delivering a load, the driver can ask for an email or phone number to send an eBOL for signature.

Should a detention event occur, motor carriers can use the eBOL or ePOD for documentation. The driver and receiver can write annotations in a field within the document to record start and stop times, which the receiver can sign off on, he said.

Before carriers receive a completed ePOD, Transflo can use OCR to validate document types and extract data. If exceptions occur, Transflo has an operations center in Louisville that will manually validate or fix data and feed information directly into its customers systems, Schrier said.

Transflo is also working with shippers to install kiosks at their facilities to maintain social distancing if drivers do not already have Transflo Mobile+ app to complete the same eBOL and ePOD process.

Another recent development is the Consumer Brands Association starting a task force to develop a protocol for contactless pickup and delivery. The task force brings together 23 consumer packaged good companies with supply chain partners Accenture, Coyote Logistics and Vector, a transportation digitization and workflow provider and retailers.

The initial focus of the task force is to develop uniform standards for eBOLs.

SCV News | City’s Annual Road Rehab to Begin July 13 – SCVNEWS.com

The Citys annual slurry seal and overlay road preservation and rehabilitation program, Road Rehab, is scheduled to begin construction Monday, July 13.

The Road Rehab program consists of slurry seal and overlay treatments on selected roadways throughout Santa Clarita. Slurry seal is a coating treatment designed to preserve and extend the life of the road, while overlay includes the removal and replacement of existing pavement that has extensive damage, where a slurry seal will no longer be adequate.

On Tuesday, June 9, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a contract with Toro Enterprises Inc. for the overlay portion and Pavement Coatings Co. for the slurry seal portion of the Road Rehab program. The overlay portion of this years Road Rehab project will consist of overlay treatments for selected arterial and neighborhood streets throughout the City. Major arterials include Placerita Canyon Road from Sand Canyon Road westerly to the City limit and Rye Canyon Road from Avenue Scott to Newhall Ranch Road. The slurry seal portion of this years Road Rehab project will be performed on neighborhood streets and collector streets citywide.

Road Rehab will continue through the summer months and residents are asked to be aware of construction notification signs on residential and arterial streets, and to follow altered traffic patterns and roadway restrictions carefully. Residents will be provided with multiple notifications prior to the start of construction in their area. All cars that are parked in a temporary No Parking zone during posted construction times will be towed.

The Citys Road Rehab website is located at santa-clarita.com/RoadRehab and features frequently asked questions and tips for residents to ensure resurfacing goes quickly and efficiently. An interactive map and full list of streets identified for Road Rehab in 2020 are available on the website. Residents will be able to navigate the list of streets and see the locations, approximate dates of proposed work and whether slurry seal or overlay will be administered.

Door hangers and handbills will be distributed to homes that will be directly affected throughout the course of the project, including dates and approximate construction hours. Construction will occur Monday through Friday. Work on residential streets will occur during daytime hours to cause the least disruption to residents. Work on arterial streets may occur during daytime hours or overnight to avoid major traffic impacts.

For the latest updates, including last-minute changes in scheduling, please follow the hashtag #SCRoadRehab on Twitter.

The city of Santa Clarita appreciates the communitys cooperation and support and will work hard to minimize inconveniences. Additional instructions and Road Rehab information, including the interactive map, can be found at santa-clarita.com/RoadRehab. For any questions or concerns, residents may contact the project hotline at (661) 290-2291.

Mum spends 15 hours giving her ugly patio a stunning makeover on the cheap and people say it was time well – The Sun

A MUM managed to transform her ugly patio in just 15 hours by giving it a lick of fresh paint.

Chloe Alexandra decided it was finally time to overhaul her back garden, which was just a drab slab of cracked concrete.

2

She rolled up her sleeves and ordered herself a stencil, and grabbed some masonry paint, with the whole project costing 50.

Chloe bought a tin of black and white paint and mixed it up to make her own shade of grey, which she painted on top of a plain white base.

She finished the whole thing by sealing it, confirming she didnt fill in the cracks first - just painted over them.

Chloe shared her handiwork to Facebook group Gardening On A Budget Official, where more than 3,000 people have admired her efforts.

She wrote: Ugly patio to lovely patio in 50 and 15 hours painting.

Not to everybody's taste but I love it.

Its just white masonry paint base then black and white masonry paint mixed together to make a dark grey for the stencil.

The stencil is from dizzy ducks. I sealed it after with Johnsons water seal and no I didnt fill the cracks first.

EFF, Orin Kerr Ask The Supreme Court To Prevent Turning The CFAA Into A Convenient Way To Punish Site Users, Security Researchers – Techdirt

from the another-way-to-break-the-internet dept

As we reported here earlier, the Supreme Court is examining a CFAA case that could have far-reaching implications for well, just about anyone who uses any online service, website, platform, or device. The case deals with a cop who abused his access privileges to run unapproved searches of government databases in exchange for cash. Obviously, this is far from an ideal case to argue against overbroad readings of an overbroad law. But, given the abuses perpetrated under this law, non-ideal cases will have to do if we don't want to be turned into criminals by generous judicial interpretations of the phrase "unauthorized access."

Plenty of people and entities are lobbing briefs in the Supreme Court's direction, begging it to avoid criminalizing activities honest Americans participate in every day. It's not just about security research. But it definitely does affect researchers -- both those engaging in normal security research efforts, and those ignoring websites' terms of service in attempts to determine whether sites engage in biased practices.

The EFF's brief [PDF] focuses mainly on the negative effects on researchers -- security and otherwise. It points out security researchers are often threatened with CFAA prosecutions/lawsuits just because entities engaging in lax security practices don't like having their lapses noticed, much less pointed out publicly. These researchers perform a valuable public service.

Decades of experience have shown that independent auditing and testing of computers by members of the security research communityoften in a manner unanticipated and even disapproved by the computers ownersis particularly effective at discovering serious vulnerabilities in widely used software and devices.

But far too often they're punished for providing this service.

In 2008, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) invoked the CFAA to try to enjoin two independent security researchers from presenting truthful information about vulnerabilities in the MBTAs fare collection system at a security conference. And in United States v. McDanel, the government brought criminal CFAA charges against a defendant who discovered a security vulnerability, alerted the company, and then, when the company refused to fix the problem, alerted the companys customers

If arguments about security researchers are too esoteric, perhaps Orin Kerr's arguments [PDF] will hit closer to home. According to the Eleventh Circuit's interpretation of the CFAA, Kerr himself is a criminal.

Like the majority of American adults, I have a Facebook account. Facebooks terms of service require its users to [p]rovide accurate information about themselves. See Facebook Terms of Service, https://www.facebook.com/legal/terms/plain_text_ terms (last visited July 1, 2020). I recently violated that term by listing my home city as Sealand. Sealand is an offshore platform in the North Sea near England built during World War II to host anti-aircraft guns. Its not actually my home city. I list it only to make a point about the CFAA. But under the governments position, my joke is no laughing matter. It is a federal crime.

Interpreting the CFAA this way makes every website owner a jokester and every website user the punchline. If you think the thousands of federal laws are arbitrary, just wait until you run into the whims of the thousands of people running sites and platforms.

Part of the problem is that written restrictions placed on computers can be entirely arbitrary. These days, anyone can run a website. Anyone can buy a computer for another person to use. And the computer owners or operators can impose whatever restrictions they want. Their limits dont need to serve an important interest. They dont even need to make sense.

Kerr cites the Lori Drew case as a real world example of how the law can be abused by federal prosecutors. Back in 2006, a teen girl committed suicide after being duped into an online relationship with a nonexistent 16-year-old male.

The Drew prosecution started with a terrible tragedy in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. In October 2006, a 13-year-old girl named Megan Meier committed suicide. Meier had regularly used the social media networking site MySpace, a then-popular forerunner to todays Facebook. In the weeks before her death, Meier had communicated with a MySpace profile of what appeared to be a handsome 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans. The Evans account had befriended Meier, and Evans expressed his admiration and affection for Meier.

But the online friendship soured. In messages sent soon before Meier committed suicide, Evans had abruptly ended the relationship. According to one witness, the last message Evans had sent to Meier had said, Youre a shitty person, and the world would be a better place without you in it. Lauren Collins, The Friend Game, The New Yorker, Jan. 14, 2008.

An investigation into Meiers suicide revealed that Josh Evans did not exist. The account was fake. It had been created by a group that knew Meier and used it to learn what Meier was saying about her friend Sarah Drew. The senior member of the group was Sarahs mother, Lori Drew. Other participants included Ashley Grills, an 18-year-old employee of Mrs. Drew who actually devised the idea and used the account, and Sarah Drew herself.

This was abhorrent behavior by a bunch of adults who discovered the internet provided an avenue for the complete destruction of a person's life. But was it a criminal act? Local prosecutors said being an asshole isn't a crime, no matter how much we'd like it to be.

Despite intense public demand to punish Drew, Missouri state prosecutors declined to file charges. A law enforcement spokesperson explained that decision straightforwardly: Drews conduct mightve been rude, it mightve been immature, but it wasnt illegal.

With Drew facing intense criticism for her actions, the federal government stepped in with the CFAA in hand to engage in a prosecution for the clicks.

The terms of service gave prosecutors a hook. Because Josh Evans did not exist, using the account violated MySpaces terms of service. According to prosecutors, this rendered every use of the Evans account an unauthorized access in violation of 18 U.S.C. 1030(a)(2). And because MySpaces computer servers were in Los Angeles County, federal prosecutors could bring charges in California even though everyone involved was in Missouri.

Ultimately, Drew was only convicted of misdemeanors. But the feds did such a good job convincing everyone she had broken the law that jury members expressed disappointment in their own verdict.

This -- along with Kerr's example about lying to Facebook about his personal info -- is the reality facing everyone if the Supreme Court decides the Eleventh Circuit is right about this and every other circuit that disagrees with it is wrong. It won't just be the Lori Drews of the world at the mercy of federal prosecutors. It will be everyone who ignores certain parts of terms of service agreements or engages with sites in ways the owners' did not anticipate or explicitly approve.

Nigel Slaters recipes for pickled gooseberries with mackerel tartare and tomato pickle – The Guardian

An entire shelf of the fridge is home to the sour and the salty: fat-bellied jars of sliced pink onions in vinegar; thin coins of skinny cucumbers with soy and ginger; blackberries in a marinade the colour of beaujolais. Each jar is a testament to my love of the piquant. There is very little summer food that isnt improved by a spoonful of something sour. The cucumber with dill and mustard seeds served with a wedge of cold salmon; the crunch of a radish with a scoop of rose-pink chicken liver pt or perhaps rhubarb that has been steeped in red wine vinegar and black peppercorns with the glistening fat of a grilled pork chop.

Its not just the pickled vegetable itself that becomes the star of the show, but the aromatic liquor that acts as a green, pink or magenta dressing.

I dont long for a larder filled with fancy jars of vinegared preserves laid down for winter. The pickles I use most are those meant for almost immediate consumption. By which I mean those that respond to a few hours mingling with vinegar, salt and aromatics a quick fix for the lovers of sour. This week I added to the top shelf with red onions thinly sliced and steeped for hours rather than days with crisp gooseberries and yellow mustard seeds, and a pot of cauliflower florets and blanched green beans marinated in a fiery Korean chilli paste.

Making a small amount allows us to experiment and avoid the risk of boredom from a cupboard full of the same old chutney. (I have a seemingly bottomless well of chutney I made to use up unripe figs three years ago. I swear it multiplies in the night.) Small amounts of pickle tantalise and intrigue, the backlit colours as beautiful as stained glass in a church window. And it gives us the chance to make a single jar for a specific dish.

Those gooseberries were made with a tartare of fresh mackerel in mind, though we also ate them, a couple of days later, with cold roast pork. The gochujang-spiked cauliflower rather like a Korean-inspired piccalilli came out with an onion tart the size of a wheel of brie and then again, the day after, stirred through steamed sticky rice for lunch.

The gooseberries remain crunchy in this piquant accompaniment, but their tartness is tempered by their time in the vinegar. They need no longer than a few hours in the pickle liquor, but will last for several days. Serves 4

red onions 2, mediumgooseberries 350gyellow mustard seeds 1 tbspblack peppercorns 15malt vinegar 100mlwhite wine vinegar 300mlmackerel fillets 500gradishes 6dill 2 tbsp, choppedsmoked salt 1 tsprye bread 4 pieces

Peel the onions and cut them into thin rings, no thicker than 0.5cm. Put them into a bowl (or if you prefer, a zip-lock bag). Top and tail the gooseberries then add them to the onions. Add the mustard seeds, peppercorns and vinegars with 1 tsp of salt. Seal and set aside overnight.

Remove any sharp pin-bones from the centre of each mackerel fillet with a pair of tweezers. It is worth being fastidious about this ask the fishmonger if you cant do it. Place a medium-sized mixing bowl into a larger bowl filled with ice. Remove the skin from the fillets with a sharp, flexible knife then cut the fish into small dice and put into the chilled bowl.

Cut the radishes into similar small dice, add them to the mackerel, then add the dill and smoked salt. Stir lightly with a fork, only briefly just enough to combine the ingredients. Serve on a chilled plate, together with the pickled gooseberries and some buttered rye bread.

I tend to serve this rather spicy, crunchy little pickle as soon as it is made, though you can store it, covered and refrigerated, for several days. With its brick-red colour and fiery element, it has more than a touch of kimchee to it. The gochujang spice paste is available from major supermarkets and Korean and Japanese food stores. Enough for 2 medium storage jars

cauliflower or romesco 1, smallgreen beans 150gshallots 200g, small (pickling)tomatoes 450ggochujang paste 3 heaped tbspcornflour 2 tbsprice vinegar 200mlmalt vinegar 100ml

Trim the cauliflower or romesco, discarding any very thick stalks or tatty leaves. Cut into small florets. Put a large, deep pan of water on to boil.

Top and tail the green beans and cut into short, 3cm lengths. Peel the shallots then halve each one.

Put the cauliflower florets into the boiling water for 3 minutes, then lift out with a draining spoon and plunge them into iced water. Do the same with the beans. When the water returns to the boil, add the shallots and cook for 8-10 minutes until almost tender, but still with a crunchy texture. Lift out and set aside.

Roughly chop the tomatoes and put them in a saucepan with the gochujang and the vinegars and let them simmer for 10 minutes until the tomatoes are soft, crushing them with a spoon as you go. Using a stick blender, pure the tomatoes and spice paste until smooth.

Mix the cornflour to a thin paste with a little water then stir into the tomato mixture and bring back to the boil. Immediately the tomato pure starts to thicken, remove from the heat. Drain the cauliflower, beans and shallots, stir them into the tomato pure and spoon into a clean storage jar. Seal and refrigerate.

There from the beginning, NWACC ‘staple’ Jim Hall retires – talkbusiness.net

When NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) first opened its doors to roughly 1,200 students in August 1990, its founding board of directors included Jim Hall.

That one-year appointment is part of Halls long resume of service to the Bentonville college. Now, after three decades and a variety of roles, Hall is stepping away from the school. His last day was July 6, retiring after working the past 13 years as the schools executive director of community and government relations and marketing.

NWACC, which reported fall 2019 enrollment of approximately 8,600 students, named Rep. Grant Hodges, R-Rogers, as Halls successor, effective July 13. Hodges is a three-term legislator who did not seek re-election this year.

For his contributions to the college, NWACC awarded Hall staff emeritus status.

Jim has been a staple at the college since before NWACC was a college and championed the institution in so many ways, chief academic officer Dr. Ricky Tompkins wrote in a letter to NWACC President Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson nominating Hall for the recognition. Jim has helped change the lives of thousands of citizens of Northwest Arkansas and beyond. I have known and worked with Jim for almost 14 years and do not know of anyone more deserving.

A Rogers native, Hall was a newspaper editor and publisher in Benton County while serving on the North Arkansas Community College (NACC) West Campus Foundation from 1986 to 1989. The foundation formed after NACC, now North Arkansas College (NorthArk) in Harrison, established a branch campus in Bentonville. Its success was evident, Hall said, and demonstrated the need for a permanent school for higher learning in Benton County.

On Aug. 15, 1989, when voters in the Bentonville and Rogers school districts approved a 3-mill ad valorem tax, NWACC was created.

Then-Gov. Bill Clinton appointed Hall to the colleges founding nine-member board of directors. He served as secretary and was involved in naming the college, hiring the founding president, designing the initial school logo and seal and purchasing NWACCs first property, a temporary administration building.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, one of the first acts of the board was to capitalize the W in NorthWest to make the acronym NWACC and distinguish the college from NACC.

In a recent interview, Hall, 66, recalled how he came to be an employee at NWACC on July 1, 1991. He was on his way to Texas to work for a newspaper there. Don White, NWACCs founding board chairman, had other ideas.

I had gone to let Don know I was resigning [from the board] to take this job in Texas, Hall recalled. He said, Before you go, Id like you to take a look at this position weve got to fill at the college. By then, the college was something I had developed a passion for. I interviewed and was fortunate they hired me.

AN ASSET BEYOND MEASUREHalls first job was as a media relations specialist. He was later director of planning, grants and communications and led the effort for NWACCs first 10-year regional institutional accreditation.

Jim Hall has been an asset to NorthWest Arkansas Community College that is beyond measure. The value of his numerous contributions through his 30 years defy calculation, Jorgenson said. He was part of the team that got that fledgling little college started, but part of many teams throughout the last 30 years that helped shape and grow the college to what it is today the largest community college in Arkansas. He and his vast reservoir of knowledge will be greatly missed by everyone.

Hall has represented NWACC in many ways and promoted the idea of higher education in Benton County for more than 35 years.

Back in the mid- to late-1980s, people in Benton County did not have an option for higher education, he explained. If they missed it coming out of high school, they missed it. There were no second chances. I had seen so many people from Rogers and Bentonville who could not go to the University of Arkansas because they were working during the day, and [the UA] only offered classes during the day. They didnt have night or weekend classes. This was [a time] before distance learning.

Community college was a way to give people a second chance at higher education, and I knew many people who needed that second chance.

Hall said NWACCs strong leadership through the years is a reason he remained at the college. He referenced NWACCs three presidents: Dr. Bob Burns (1990-2003), Dr. Becky Paneitz (2003-2013) and Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson.

I had the distinct pleasure of working for three good presidents, he said. I was given the opportunity to reinvent myself so often and been fortunate to do so many things at the college, and that was because the presidents let me.

And each of those three was the right person at the right time to lead NWACC. They have all three done wonderful jobs.

Hall recognizes his departure comes at a time when NWACC is facing some challenges, financial and otherwise. The colleges funding from the state and from local property taxes is expected to drop by about 5% next academic year. NWACC has also put a freeze on salary increases, due to the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also noted NWACC is one of 22 public community colleges in Arkansas. He said that fact is not lost on some state legislators, who would like to see the number reduced through mergers with university systems.

That may work elsewhere, and you are seeing that happening elsewhere. But it will not work in Benton County, for the simple reason that we have such a strong property tax, Hall said. [NWACC] will receive more revenue from local property taxes than from the state next year. There isnt a college [in Arkansas] that can say that.

NorthWest Arkansas Community College has been fortunate to have the autonomy set its course and, financially, is solid, he said.

Hall did, however, speculate about the practicality of having 22 community colleges in the state.

Maybe in 1990 we [needed that many], before we had distance education and before we had a better highway system in Arkansas, he said. Today, do we need 22? That needs to be looked at.

If Hall sounds a bit like a politician, that may be in his future. He said retired life might include a run for office on some level.

I got a little bit of experience these past 13 years doing government relations for the college, and I have enjoyed that, he said. Ive enjoyed doing the work and enjoyed getting to know the legislators.

Hall has never been one to sit idle. His other job while working for NWACC was as a freelance sportswriter. His byline appeared in the Bentonville-based Benton County Daily Record for more than 20 years, starting in the late 1980s and reporting on multiple sports for schools throughout the county. As the Daily Records beat reporter for Bentonville High School, Hall chronicled the Tigers first state championship in football in 2001 and the schools first state baseball championship the following spring.

Dozens of seals rescued by ‘fake mums’ in innovative wetsuit creation – shropshirestar.com

Dozens of orphaned seal pups who were swept away from their mothers during storms are being saved by wetsuit mums.

Seal Rescue Ireland in Co Wexford has seen a recent surge in orphaned seals, with many just days and weeks old.

The injured or orphaned pups are comforted by the fake mums which are made from old wetsuits.

The charity organisation which rescues, rehabilitates and releases native seals from across the coast, said it uses wetsuits that would have ended up in landfill.

Each of the pups needs months of care after being separated from their mother and would not survive if left alone in the wild.

The wetsuit mums are made to look and feel like an adult seal and are placed beside the pups in the centres intensive care unit.

Executive director of Seal Rescue Ireland Melanie Croce said that orphaned seals can become distressed when brought into the centre.

When they become separate from their mother very young they have virtually no chance of survival and thats when we have to step in, help them and bring them back to a healthy weight, and get them big and strong enough to be released into the wild, she said.

They can be very stressed and we look for ways to keep them calm.

The idea kind of evolved and we tried it out and it was a hit. Its a practical way to help them along, its very heart-warming and this is the closest thing they will have to a mother.

We have 17 pups and they all get a fake mum with them. We put them into an ICU container with a heat lamp its a quiet place for them to rest.

After storms we always get a huge amount of calls about abandoned pups so this is how climate change is impacting.

They also become orphaned through human disturbance. People dont realise that seals need to rest and they raise their young on the beach and if you approach a seal the mother might leave and not come back for their young.

The designer behind the wetsuit mum, Lynn Haughton, said she wanted it to resemble an adult seal.

Lynn, who is founder and designer of The Upcycle Movement, had been volunteering at the centre when she was asked to make the wetsuits.

I repurpose recyclable textiles and I have my own design collection focusing on wetsuits so we tried out this new creation and it worked, Ms Haughton said.

It has a recycled waterproof lining filled with off-cuts from old wetsuits so its great to get those used too.

The seals responded really well most have went straight to it but some arent bothered.

Its definitely effective. They are really happy with it and other rescue centres in the UK have contacted me about how they can do it.

Kahle: Freedom is our brand – Opinion – The Register-Guard

Whether by planning or chance, nations tend to grow up around some single core value. That value is affirmed by literally millions of choices made by its citizens. Long before corporations learned to ape the same dynamic, nations often developed a brand that was considered unique to it and its people.

Germany is productive. The Swiss are precise. Japan is orderly. Italians are creative. The French value beauty. These stereotypes have limitations, but they also organize many citizens lives in ways that are invisible, except at the macro scale. France surrendered to the Germans in WWII to keep The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower from getting bombed. Millions of tourists since have expressed their gratitude for that surrender.

This may be a distinction considered too subtle for some, but Im in favor of stereotypes and opposed to clichs. Whether were comfortable admitting it or not, all of us make micro-judgements dozens or hundreds of times each day. Life wouldnt be manageable without categorizing stimuli based on past experiences. It becomes clich, a.k.a. bigotry, only when exceptions are no longer allowed to the rule.

This broad-brush understanding of a nations self-image can help to explain why so many Americans resist wearing masks and taking other COVID-19 precautions. Freedom is our brand. Its how many of us organize our choices.

Our nation was born from a desire for independence. We wanted to be free. Free to speak our minds. Free to gather in groups. Free to practice our religion. Free to hear and read voices that our government would rather suppress.

Critics rightly point to our historys missteps against the brand. White men who owned property fought for their freedom, but resisted attempts to give freedom and independence to Black people and women. Fortunately, our press and assembly freedoms exposed those inconsistencies and hastened some necessary changes. The process is ongoing, but the systems are sound.

Or so it seemed, until recently.

When freedom is your core value, opposition to government mandates is baked into the cake. Government must continually build trust with its citizens, or order quickly slips away. "Masks wont make a difference." "Work is more important than public health." "Vaccines open the door to mind control."

Its hard to pinpoint exactly when or how, but freedom-loving Americans seem to have lost their way. Liberty has devolved into libertinism. We want absolute freedom. Gravity and common sense should not limit our options. How did it become patriotic to do something stupid?

Weve become a glandular people, driven by personal urges and not by common values. Were busily exposing the shortcomings of our founders, blind to the risks they took to achieve what we have. They bound themselves to one another. Freedom was their goal, but bravery was their means. Those two values were always inseparable.

We applaud whenever a singer hits the impossible high note in our national anthem, celebrating that we live "in the land of the free." But our cheering obscures what bought that freedom. To continue our fight for freedom, we must maintain "the home of the brave."

Don’t let them take our freedom | Letters To The Editor – Uniontown Herald Standard

It is sad what is going on in this country now, telling us what we can do and not do where we can go and where not to go. It is time for the people to step up and say enough is enough, cause if we let this go on they will keep trying to take control of are lives from now on.

The governor thinks he can say what business can be open and what business must close. Who is he to say who can work and who can't? People are trying to work to feed there family's and he stops them. It is time to cut his pay off. People are out of work but still must pay taxes to pay him and many state workers to sit at home with full pay to make a few phone calls. Their pay should be cut back, too.You lose your job, your pay is cut. Teachers' jobs are cut and get paid the same staying home, not fair to tax payers. Do they think they are better then we are.

We are only to have so many people at a get together, but the protesters can have as many as the want. They want you to wear a face mask at all times. Is that really doing any good? How is your body going to build an immune system to something walking around with your face covered up? It will soon do more harm then good.

It is time for the people to use there freedom do what they want when they want. That is what many men and women in the service died for so we could have that freedom. Do not let them turn this country into a socialist country. God bless you all and keep fighting for are freedom.

Suicide of Egyptian activist Sarah Hegazi exposes the ‘freedom and violence’ of LGBTQ Muslims in exile – The Conversation US

LGBTQ communities worldwide are mourning the death of 30-year-old Sarah Hegazi, a queer Egyptian activist who ended her life on June 14, 2020.

Hegazi, who had been jailed for promoting what the Egyptian state called sexual deviance after raising a rainbow flag during a concert in Cairo in 2017, was released on bail three months after her arrest.

Shortly afterwards, she she sought asylum in Canada. As the only queer woman among the 57 LGBTQ individuals arrested in the concert crackdown, Hegazi became prominent in queer activism circles in Egypt and beyond.

In Canada, Hegazi escaped the violence of the Egyptian state but not, as she wrote in a 2018 essay, the post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and loneliness caused by her past. Like many queer and trans people living in exile, Hegazi felt rejected by her own people yet mourned the home she left behind.

She yearned for the land that expelled her. In one Instagram post, from August 20, 2019, Hegazi wrote that she hoped her grandmother would be alive to greet her when she got home to Egypt.

That reunion would never happen.

A queer suicide during Pride, a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ lives and resistance, is a painful thing to process, made harder by the coronavirus lockdown. For queer and trans Muslims in isolation, separated from their chosen communities in what may or may not be accepting family homes, mourning Hegazis death has been a lonely, even secretive, process.

As a queer Muslim, I feel Hegazis death deeply. Back in 2012, I left my home country, Afghanistan, and later sought asylum in the U.S. Now, I live in the United States, but I dont truly belong anywhere.

[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversations newsletter.]

That alienation drives my academic research on how political violence and displacement intercede in the lives of LGBTQ Muslims. I recognize Hegazis suicide as the tragic result of the discrimination and repudiation people like us face our entire lives.

In her suicide note, Hegazi apologized for being too weak to resist the freedom of death.

To my siblings, I tried to make it, and I failed. To my friends, the experience is cruelforgive me, she wrote. To the world, you were cruel to a great extent, but I forgive.

The cruelty Hegazi experienced is echoed by many of the 36 LGBTQ Muslims I interviewed for my current research project on queer and trans Muslims living as refugees in the United States. Most said they had been rejected by friends and family because of their sexuality or gender identity. However, many also chose to forgive, as Hegazi did.

We continue to love the family that abandons us, said Hamza, a 24-year-old Afghan refugee I interviewed in 2017 in Fremont, California. We long for the home that pushes us into exile. We miss friends that wouldnt even attend our funerals.

This rejection stems from homophobia, which is rooted in both the interpretation of religious texts and in the anti-LGBTQ laws of some Southwest Asian and North African countries with colonial histories. As a result, some queer and trans Muslims and Arabs eventually try to escape the countries that criminalize their gender identity and sexual orientation.

While there are no statistics on how many LGBTQ Muslims are refugees, a 2019 United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees report says ever more LGBTQ people are fleeing persecution worldwide.

Queer Muslim refugees who make it to Western countries may find that rejection has followed them in a new form: Islamophobia. Meanwhile, in LGBTQ communities, being Muslim and queer is seen as paradoxical.

As a result, queer and trans Muslims in exile in the West become outsiders twice over.

I was called a terrorist by a group of white gays in a bar in Washington, D.C, Abdullah, a 30-year-old Iraqi-American, told me in 2017.

My interviews reveal that LBGTQ Muslim refugees are navigating two distinct and difficult spaces: the homophobia of their birthplaces and the Islamophobia in exile.

Queer Muslim exiles cross these borders on a daily basis, and its a complicated process. Their families are not merely a point of oppression, they tell me, nor is the queer community pure freedom. Rather, both environments pose certain constraints.

Freedom and violence are an unending dance.

For Sarah Hegazi, the violence did not end with death. Homophobic cruelty continues on social media, with some commentators telling people not to pray for Hegazi because being queer and committing suicide are both kabir, or major sins, in strict interpretations of Islamic law.

Hegazis own last post on social media was on June 12, two days before her death. Under a photo of her lying peacefully on her back in lush grass, smiling to a blue sky, Hegazi wrote on Instagram that, The sky is more beautiful than the earth. And I want the sky, not the earth.

I have heard versions of Hegazis pained laments before, in my own head. I have felt them in my own exiled body, lying in bed.

For queer and trans Muslims and Arabs, belonging is but a dream. Mostly we are just trying to survive.
