Major stock market indices have recovered most of their losses for the year. In some regards, its not surprising, considering the incredible accommodative stance from global Central bankers.

Beneath the surface of the stock market indices lies a somewhat concerning trend of five companies: Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet (Google) and Facebook, which represent almost 20% of the S&P 500.

Such a large concentration of a few companies pushing the stock market higher has usually led to tears. Let me explain, why.

The S&P 500 index is capitalization-weighted by its constituents. As one company appreciates, their weighting in the index then rises. Microsoft has the largest capitalization of any company, at $1.6 trillion. That is, all of their 7.6 billion outstanding shares, multiplied by the current share price of $211, is worth $1.6 trillion. This represents 6% of the entire index. If Microsoft appreciates 1% in a single day, the contribution to the total index return is 0.06%. However, if McDonalds, which represents only 0.5% of the index with a total market cap of $136 billion, rises 1%, its contribution to the return is 0.005%, or less than one-tenth that of Microsoft.

As illustrated in the example above, if five companies represent almost 20% of the broad stock market, investors need to own these companies in similar weightings if they hope to "keep up" with the market.

Growth investors may need to be even more careful.

The same five companies in the S&P 500 Growth ETF represent over 37% of the fund! Investors are usually very cautious about having 5% of their portfolio in a single stock. In many of the growth indices, Microsoft represents 10%, Apple 9.7%, and Amazon 8%!

The party may end soon.

For several years, technology giants have been probed by regulatory bodies in the U.S. and abroad. Lately, the pressure seems to be increasing.

There are always two sides to the story, however, and it is easy to articulate why these companies should be in your portfolio. But also, be mindful of industry and stock concentration and look to reduce outsized positions.

Big Tech joins fight against Trump’s restrictions on international students – The Logic

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Salesforce and Spotify are among the tech companies joining the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in asking a federal judge to block the White Houses July 6 directive to bar international students from staying in the country if their colleges move largely online in the fall due to pandemic lockdowns.(Axios)

Talking point: The U.S. has so far allowed international students to stay on visa throughout the pandemic by taking more online courses than usually permitted. The new rule revokes this allowancea decision tech companies say does not consider the loss of the tens of billions of dollars that international students contribute to U.S. GDP each year, according to a court filing. International students in the U.S. contributed nearly US$41 billion to the economy in the 20182019 academic year, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators. In an amicus brief filed Monday, the companies sided with Harvard and MIT, which filed a lawsuit last week, and said they would be harmed substantially if the students were removed. Dropbox wouldnt exist without immigrants, a spokesperson for the company, which is part of the brief, told Protocol. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia are also suing the government on the issue. A federal judge is expected to rule by Wednesday.

Cramer’s earnings watch: ‘If the banks get hammered, things could get ugly’ – CNBC

After a weeklong break from television, CNBC's Jim Cramer returned to his evening investment education show on Monday to give a preview of the earnings reports to come.

The "Mad Money" host warned that Wall Street is in a tough spot, with the big banks set to report results starting Tuesday.

"If the banks can rally, then maybe we've gone 'through the looking glass,'" he said. "If the banks get hammered, things could get ugly."

The comments came after the S&P 500 which collapsed alongside the other major indexes earlier this year as the coronavirus outbreak took hold around the globe managed to trade in positive territory during the trading session. But that proved to be ephemeral as the broad index ended up sliding nearly 1% at the close.

After making big gains early on, the Dow Jones finished up about 10 points, or 0.04%, at 26,085.80, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.13% to 10,390.84 as a rally in big tech stocks lost its luster later in the day.

The market rose as traders ignored a continued surge in new positive Covid-19 diagnoses across the country. Additionally, Pfizer and BioNTech shares surged after their Covid-19 vaccine candidates received "fast track" recognition from the Food and Drug Administration.

"This is the week when we find out if the real world is going to intrude on the stock market world, and that's what happened today, but tomorrow's the big test," Cramer said.

He went on to present what's circled on his calendar this earnings week. All projections are based on Factset estimates:

JPMorgan Chase

"I don't know if JPMorgan's results will be good enough to offset those of Wells Fargo," Cramer said. "I think we'll hear a lot about bad loans from both of them, though JPMorgan has the balance sheet and diversification to handle the pain."

Wells Fargo

"They've got a ton of personal loans and oil loans," he said. "No wonder they had to cut the dividend, but it is run by Charlie Scharf. He's going to figure it out."

Citigroup

"Now that Citi's had to suspend its incredible buyback, you've lost the best reason for owning this darned stock," he said. "It's cheap, but it could easily stay cheap."

Delta Air Lines

"The Robinhood crowd, they love the airlines, even as passengers seem to hate them. Will Delta need more help from the government?" he said. "If they say no ... you might want to buy American Airlines, which needs the most help, but only for a trade, please."

Goldman Sachs

"I think they're going to blow away the numbers," Cramer said. "This market's a trader's paradise, which should allow an investment bank like Goldman to put up a remarkable quarter from all that great firepower they've got on the trading desk."

UnitedHealth

"This pandemic's been fabulous for the managed care space because all sorts of expensive surgeries keep being postponed," he said. "That could lead to a huge quarter, but the conference call spells out the future" and the future could be "murky."

Bank of America

"They almost always report excellent numbers driven by their top-notch digitization strategy, but it never seems to matter," Cramer said. "The stock hasn't been able to rise above the rest of the group. No reason this time should be different."

Morgan Stanley

"Morgan Stanley can talk about their merger with E-trade," he said. "I think it works for the same reasons Goldman does almost no collateralized loan exposure."

Johnson & Johnson

"They have a terrific pipeline, and they're super-focused on Covid," he said. "I bet they have a great quarter, but it might not matter, because this stock ran up hard today."

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company

"Perhaps the most important report of the week is Taiwan Semiconductor, and that's because it has a huge amount of business with Apple," he said.

Domino's Pizza

"I think they tell a good story, as contactless delivery is the safest way to eat," he said.

Netflix

"I think of Netflix as a worldwide entertainment service that's essential in the age of Covid-19. However, management tends to be pretty self-effacing," he said. "I would like Netflix into weakness."

First Horizon

"This is a great regional bank, it is a top-notch franchise, it's in one of the strongest areas ... and it has branches all over the South," Cramer said. "It's amazingly well-run, and yet the stock sells for just seven times earnings and it sports a massive 6% yield."

Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Treatment Planning – Imaging Technology News

At the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) 2019 meeting, new artificial intelligence (AI) software to assist with radiotherapy treatment planning systems was highlighted. The goal of the AI-based systems is to save staff time, while still allowing clinicians to do the final patient review.

RaySearch demonstrated a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared machine learning treatment planning system. The RaySearch RayStation machine learning algorithm is being used clinically by University Health Network, Princess Margaret Cancer Center, Toronto, Canada, where it was rolled out over several months in late-2019. Medical physicist Leigh Conroy, Ph.D., was involved in this rollout and helped conduct a study, showing the automated plans and traditionally made plans to radiation oncologists to get valuable feedback. She spoke at the AAPM 2019 meeting on this topic.

In an interview with itnTV, Conroy explained that she worked with an algorithm that uses machine learning to create automated treatment plans. With this, we train the algorithm using a curated set of high-quality, previously delivered plans. Then, it is able to detect the patient that is most similar to a novel patient and create a new treatment plan with no user interaction beyond pressing the play button, she explained.

Conrads study directly compared those automated treatment plans to traditionally generated manual plans. The radiation oncologist then compared those two plans head-to-head and decided whether each plan was acceptable, and chose the favored plan. The plans are not modified as they are performing them, however they are modifiable. The automated plan is modifiable, but for the purposes of this study, we are not going to be modifying them so we can directly compare the output of the machine learning algorithm to the output of the planners, she said.

The system was trained using a model that was developed at Princess Margaret, and the model is being used clinically. The way that we are doing our study is if the doctor does choose the automated plan, then its underlined that the physicist knows when they are doing their plan QA that it is an automated plan, and it goes to the same QA that it normally would, and the patient-specific QA is a fully deliverable plan, and that is the plan that the patient is treated with.

Depending on how things go with the study, it is predicted that AI should see a regular implementation. That is the point of the study, to make sure we can do this and work it into our regular process and eventually provide it if the doctors continue to like the automated plans, she said.

One of the main ideas in implementing AI is to save time to get more patient throughput. We are not measuring the end to end timing of a planner vs. the machine learning. But one of the major advantages is that it takes about 20 minutes for a new patient, however there is no user interacting during those 20 minutes, so the planner can go and do other work or other plans during that time, and come back so there is a fully done plan.

There is a different process depending on what plan is being created. However, the AI would help to free them up to be able to do other duties. From a planner expertise perspective, some of the planning techniques such as head and neck might be more complicated so it might take longer for the planner to do it. Its more reliant on their level of expertise, she explained.

Varian also has developed AI-driven automated treatment planning software that is currently being used by several hospitals.

Recently, Varian released the newest version of its treatment planning system, Eclipse v16. This new release includes intelligent features such as RapidPlan PT, a clinical application of machine learning in proton treatment planning, and RT Peer Review, a collaborative workspace designed to streamline and accelerate the peer review process for radiotherapy treatment plans.

Previously only available for photon-based radiotherapy treatment planning, RapidPlan is knowledge-based treatment planning software that enables clinicians to leverage knowledge and data from similar prior treatment plans to quickly develop high-quality personalized plans for patients. This knowledge-based planning software is now available for proton treatment planning with RapidPlan PT. The software also allows dose prediction with machine learning models that can be used as a decision support tool to determine which patients would be appropriate for proton or photon therapy.

With the number of operational proton treatment rooms continuing to increase, there is a need for experienced proton therapy clinicians, said Kolleen Kennedy, chief growth officer, president, Proton Solutions, Varian, in a written statement. RapidPlan PT helps bridge the learning curve, allowing established centers to share their models and clinical experience. The machine learning in RapidPlan PT has the potential to reduce proton treatment plan optimization from a one- to eight-hour process, as reported by clinical proton centers, to less than 10 minutes, while also potentially improving plan quality.

Eclipse v16 has received the CE mark and is 510(k) pending.

Its the people of the United States who are the victims of what amounts to Chinese theft on a scale so massive that it represents one of the largest transfers of wealth in human history.

If you are an American adult, it is more likely than not that China has stolen your personal data.

In 2017, the Chinese military conspired to hack Equifax and made off with the sensitive personal information of 150 million Americanswere talking nearly half of the American population and most American adultsand as Ill discuss in a few moments, this was hardly a standalone incident.

Our data isnt the only thing at stake hereso are our health, our livelihoods, and our security.

Weve now reached the point where the FBI is opening a new China-related counterintelligence case about every 10 hours. Of the nearly 5,000 active FBI counterintelligence cases currently underway across the country, almost half are related to China. And at this very moment, China is working to compromise American health care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and academic institutions conducting essential COVID-19 research.

But before I go on, let me be clear: This is not about the Chinese people, and its certainly not about Chinese Americans. Every year, the United States welcomes more than 100,000 Chinese students and researchers into this country. For generations, people have journeyed from China to the United States to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their familiesand our society is better for their contributions. So, when I speak of the threat from China, I mean the government of China and the Chinese Communist Party.

To understand this threat and how we must act to respond to it, the American people should remember three things.

First: We need to be clear-eyed about the scope of the Chinese governments ambition. Chinathe Chinese Communist Partybelieves it is in a generational fight to surpass our country in economic and technological leadership.

That is sobering enough. But its waging this fight not through legitimate innovation, not through fair and lawful competition, and not by giving their citizens the freedom of thought and speech and creativity that we treasure here in the United States. Instead, China is engaged in a whole-of-state effort to become the worlds only superpower by any means necessary.

The second thing the American people need to understand is that China uses a diverse range of sophisticated techniqueseverything from cyber intrusions to corrupting trusted insiders. Theyve even engaged in outright physical theft. And theyve pioneered an expansive approach to stealing innovation through a wide range of actorsincluding not just Chinese intelligence services but state-owned enterprises, ostensibly private companies, certain kinds of graduate students and researchers, and a whole variety of other actors working on their behalf.

To achieve its goals and surpass America, China recognizes it needs to make leaps in cutting-edge technologies. But the sad fact is that instead of engaging in the hard slog of innovation, China often steals American intellectual property and then uses it to compete against the very American companies it victimizedin effect, cheating twice over. Theyre targeting research on everything from military equipment to wind turbines to rice and corn seeds.

Through its talent recruitment programs, like the so-called Thousand Talents Program, the Chinese government tries to entice scientists to secretly bring our knowledge and innovation back to Chinaeven if that means stealing proprietary information or violating our export controls and conflict-of-interest rules.

Take the case of scientist Hongjin Tan, for example, a Chinese national and American lawful permanent resident. He applied to Chinas Thousand Talents Program and stole more than $1 billionthats with a bworth of trade secrets from his former employer, an Oklahoma-based petroleum company, and got caught. A few months ago, he was convicted and sent to prison.

Or theres the case of Shan Shi, a Texas-based scientist, also sentenced to prison earlier this year. Shi stole trade secrets regarding syntactic foam, an important naval technology used in submarines. Shi, too, had applied to Chinas Thousand Talents Program, and specifically pledged to digest and absorb the relevant technology in the United States. He did this on behalf of Chinese state-owned enterprises, which ultimately planned to put the American company out of business and take over the market.

In one of the more galling and egregious aspects of the scheme, the conspirators actually patented in China the very manufacturing process theyd stolen, and then offered their victim American company a joint venture using its own stolen technology. Were talking about an American company that spent years and millions of dollars developing that technology, and China couldnt replicate itso, instead, it paid to have it stolen.

And just two weeks ago, Hao Zhang was convicted of economic espionage, theft of trade secrets, and conspiracy for stealing proprietary information about wireless devices from two U.S. companies. One of those companies had spent over 20 years developing the technology Zhang stole.

These cases were among more than a thousand investigations the FBI has into Chinas actual and attempted theft of American technologywhich is to say nothing of over a thousand more ongoing counterintelligence investigations of other kinds related to China. Were conducting these kinds of investigations in all 56 of our field offices. And over the past decade, weve seen economic espionage cases with a link to China increase by approximately 1,300 percent.

The stakes could not be higher, and the potential economic harm to American businesses and the economy as a whole almost defies calculation.

As National Security Advisor OBrien discussed in his June remarks, the Chinese government is also making liberal use of hacking to steal our corporate and personal dataand theyre using both military and non-state hackers to do it. The Equifax intrusion I mentioned just a few moments ago, which led to the indictment of Chinese military personnel, was hardly the only time China stole the sensitive personal information of huge numbers of the American public.

For example, did any of you have health insurance through Anthem or one of its associated insurers? In 2015, Chinas hackers stole the personal data of 80 million of that companys current and former customers.

Or maybe youre a federal employeeor you used to be one, or you applied for a government job once, or a family member or roommate did. Well, in 2014, Chinas hackers stole more than 21 million records from OPM, the federal governments Office of Personnel Management.

Why are they doing this? First, China has made becoming an artificial intelligence world leader a priority, and these kinds of thefts feed right into Chinas development of artificial intelligence tools.

Compounding the threat, the data China stole is of obvious value as they attempt to identify people for secret intelligence gathering. On that front, China is using social media platformsthe same ones Americans use to stay connected or find jobsto identify people with access to our governments sensitive information and then target those people to try to steal it.

Just to pick one example, a Chinese intelligence officer posing as a headhunter on a popular social media platform recently offered an American citizen a sizeable sum of money in exchange for so-called consulting services. That sounds benign enough until you realize those consulting services were related to sensitive information the American target had access to as a U.S. military intelligence specialist.

Now that particular tale has a happy ending: The American citizen did the right thing and reported the suspicious contact, and the FBI, working together with our armed forces, took it from there. I wish I could say that all such incidents ended that way.

Its a troublingly similar story in academia.

Through talent recruitment programs like the Thousand Talents Program I mentioned just a few moments ago, China pays scientists at American universities to secretly bring our knowledge and innovation back to Chinaincluding valuable, federally funded research. To put it bluntly, this means American taxpayers are effectively footing the bill for Chinas own technological development. China then leverages its ill-gotten gains to undercut U.S. research institutions and companies, blunting our nations advancement and costing American jobs. And we are seeing more and more of these cases.

In May alone, we arrested both Qing Wang, a former researcher with the Cleveland Clinic who worked on molecular medicine and the genetics of cardiovascular disease, and Simon Saw-Teong Ang, a University of Arkansas scientist doing research for NASA. Both of these guys were allegedly committing fraud by concealing their participation in Chinese talent recruitment programs while accepting millions of dollars in American federal grant funding.

That same month, former Emory University professor Xiao-Jiang Li pled guilty to filing a false tax return for failing to report the income hed received through Chinas Thousand Talents Program. Our investigation found that while Li was researching Huntingtons disease at Emory, he was also pocketing half a million unreported dollars from China.

In a similar vein, Charles Lieber, chair of Harvards Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, was indicted just last month for making false statements to federal authorities about his Thousand Talents participation. The United States has alleged that Lieber concealed from both Harvard and the NIH his position as a strategic scientist at a Chinese universityand the fact that the Chinese government was paying him, through the Wuhan Institute of Technology, a $50,000 monthly stipend, more than $150,000 in living expenses, and more than $1.5 million to establish a laboratory back in China.

Theres more. Another tool China and the Chinese Communist Party use to manipulate Americans is what we call malign foreign influence.

Now, traditional foreign influence is a normal, legal diplomatic activity typically conducted through diplomatic channels. But malign foreign influence efforts are subversive, undeclared, criminal, or coercive attempts to sway our governments policies, distort our countrys public discourse, and undermine confidence in our democratic processes and values.

China is engaged in a highly sophisticated malign foreign influence campaign, and its methods include bribery, blackmail, and covert deals. Chinese diplomats also use both open, naked economic pressure and seemingly independent middlemen to push Chinas preferences on American officials.

Just take one all-too-common illustration: Lets say China gets wind that some American official is planning to travel to Taiwanthink a governor, a state senator, a member of Congress. China does not want that to happen, because that travel might appear to legitimize Taiwanese independence from Chinaand legitimizing Taiwan would, of course, be contrary to Chinas One China policy.

So what does China do? Well, China has leverage over the American officials constituentsAmerican companies, academics, and members of the media all have legitimate and understandable reasons to want access to Chinese partners and markets. And because of the authoritarian nature of the Chinese Communist Party, China has immense power over those same partners and markets. So, China will sometimes start by trying to influence the American official overtly and directly. China might openly warn that if the American official goes ahead and takes that trip to Taiwan, China will take it out on a company from that officials home state by withholding the companys license to manufacture in China. That could be economically ruinous for the company, would directly pressure the American official to alter his travel plans, and the official would know that China was trying to influence him.

That would be bad enough. But the Chinese Communist Party often doesnt stop there; it cant stop there if it wants to stay in powerso it uses its leverage even more perniciously. If Chinas more direct, overt influence campaign doesnt do the trick, they sometimes turn to indirect, covert, deceptive influence efforts.

To continue with the illustration of the American official with travel plans that the Chinese Communist Party doesnt like, China will work relentlessly to identify the people closest to that officialthe people that official trusts most. China will then work to influence those people to act on Chinas behalf as middlemen to influence the official. The co-opted middlemen may then whisper in the officials ear and try to sway the officials travel plans or public positions on Chinese policy. These intermediaries, of course, arent telling the American official that theyre Chinese Communist Party pawnsand worse still, some of these intermediaries may not even realize theyre being used as pawns, because they, too, have been deceived.

Ultimately, China doesnt hesitate to use smoke, mirrors, and misdirection to influence Americans.

Similarly, China often pushes academics and journalists to self-censor if they want to travel into China. And weve seen the Chinese Communist Party pressure American media and sporting giants to ignore or suppress criticism of Chinas ambitions regarding Hong Kong or Taiwan. This kind of thing is happening over and over, across the United States.

And I will note that the pandemic has unfortunately not stopped any of thisin fact, we have heard from federal, state, and even local officials that Chinese diplomats are aggressively urging support for Chinas handling of the COVID-19 crisis. Yes, this is happening at both the federal and state levels. Not that long ago, we had a state senator who was recently even asked to introduce a resolution supporting Chinas response to the pandemic.

The punchline is this: All of these seemingly inconsequential pressures add up to a policymaking environment in which Americans find themselves held over a barrel by the Chinese Communist Party.

All the while, Chinas government and Communist Party have brazenly violated well-settled norms and the rule of law.

Since 2014, Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping has spearheaded a program known as Fox Hunt. Now, China describes Fox Hunt as some kind of international anti-corruption campaignit is not. Instead, Fox Hunt is a sweeping bid by General Secretary Xi to target Chinese nationals whom he sees as threats and who live outside China, across the world. Were talking about political rivals, dissidents, and critics seeking to expose Chinas extensive human rights violations.

Hundreds of the Fox Hunt victims that they target live right here in the United States, and many are American citizens or green card holders. The Chinese government wants to force them to return to China, and Chinas tactics to accomplish that are shocking. For example, when it couldnt locate one Fox Hunt target, the Chinese government sent an emissary to visit the targets family here in the United States. The message they said to pass on? The target had two options: return to China promptly, or commit suicide. And what happens when Fox Hunt targets refuse to return to China? In the past, their family members both here in the United States and in China have been threatened and coerced, and those back in China have even been arrested for leverage.

Ill take this opportunity to note that if you believe the Chinese government is targeting youthat youre a potential Fox Hunt victimplease reach out to your local FBI field office.

Understanding how a nation could engage in these tactics brings me to the third thing the American people need to remember: that China has a fundamentally different system than oursand its doing all it can to exploit the openness of ours while taking advantage of its own closed system.

Many of the distinctions that mean a lot here in the United States are blurry or almost nonexistent in ChinaI'm talking about distinctions between the government and the Chinese Communist Party, between the civilian and military sectors, and between the state and the private sector.

For one thing, an awful lot of large Chinese businesses are state-owned enterprisesliterally owned by the government, and thus the Party. And even if they arent, Chinas laws allow its government to compel any Chinese company to provide any information it requestsincluding American citizens data.

On top of that, Chinese companies of any real size are legally required to have Communist Party cells inside them to keep them in line. Even more alarmingly, Communist Party cells have reportedly been established in some American companies operating in China as a cost of doing business there.

These kinds of features should give U.S. companies pause when they consider working with Chinese corporations like Huaweiand should give all Americans pause, too, when relying on such a companys devices and networks. As the worlds largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, Huawei has broad access to much that American companies do in China. Its also been charged in the United States with racketeering conspiracy and has, as alleged in the indictment, repeatedly stolen intellectual property from U.S. companies, obstructed justice, and lied to the U.S. government and its commercial partners, including banks.

The allegations are clear: Huawei is a serial intellectual property thief, with a pattern and practice of disregarding both the rule of law and the rights of its victims. I have to tell you, it certainly caught my attention to read a recent article describing the words of Huaweis founder, Ren Zhengfei, about the companys mindset. At a Huawei research and development center, he reportedly told employees that to ensure the companys survival, they need toand I quotesurge forward, killing as you go, to blaze us a trail of blood. Hes also reportedly told employees that Huawei has entered, to quote, a state of war. I certainly hope he couldnt have meant that literally, but its hardly an encouraging tone, given the companys repeated criminal behavior.

In our modern world, there is perhaps no more ominous prospect than a hostile foreign governments ability to compromise our countrys infrastructure and devices. If Chinese companies like Huawei are given unfettered access to our telecommunications infrastructure, they could collect any of your information that traverses their devices or networks. Worse still: Theyd have no choice but to hand it over to the Chinese government if askedthe privacy and due process protections that are sacrosanct in the United States are simply non-existent in China.

The Chinese government is engaged in a broad, diverse campaign of theft and malign influence, and it can execute that campaign with authoritarian efficiency. Theyre calculating. Theyre persistent. Theyre patient. And theyre not subject to the righteous constraints of an open, democratic society or the rule of law.

China, as led by the Chinese Communist Party, is going to continue to try to misappropriate our ideas, influence our policymakers, manipulate our public opinion, and steal our data. They will use an all-tools and all-sectors approachand that demands our own all-tools and all-sectors approach in response.

Our folks at the FBI are working their tails off every day to protect our nations companies, our universities, our computer networks, and our ideas and innovation. To do that, were using a broad set of techniquesfrom our traditional law enforcement authorities to our intelligence capabilities.

And I will briefly note that were having real success. With the help of our many foreign partners, weve arrested targets all over the globe. Our investigations and the resulting prosecutions have exposed the tradecraft and techniques the Chinese use, raising awareness of the threat and our industries defenses. They also show our resolve and our ability to attribute these crimes to those responsible. Its one thing to make assertionsbut in our justice system, when a person, or a corporation, is investigated and then charged with a crime, we have to prove the truth of the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt. The truth mattersand so, these criminal indictments matter. And weve seen how our criminal indictments have rallied other nations to our causewhich is crucial to persuading the Chinese government to change its behavior.

Were also working more closely than ever with partner agencies here in the U.S. and our partners abroad. We cant do it on our own; we need a whole-of-society response. Thats why we in the intelligence and law enforcement communities are working harder than ever to give companies, universities, and the American people themselves the information they need to make their own informed decisions and protect their most valuable assets.

Confronting this threat effectively does not mean we shouldnt do business with the Chinese. It does not mean we shouldnt host Chinese visitors. It does not mean we shouldnt welcome Chinese students or coexist with China on the world stage. But it does mean that when China violates our criminal laws and international norms, we are not going to tolerate it, much less enable it. The FBI and our partners throughout the U.S. government will hold China accountable and protect our nations innovation, ideas, and way of lifewith the help and vigilance of the American people.

Trans rights demos have found a united fight with the black lives matter movement

Its a shame theres no invisibility cloak to throw at transphobic authors. Author JK Rowling chose Pride month for her latest Twitter rant on transgender rights, coupled with a lengthy website entry spreading misinformation.

Rowlings comments come at a worrying time. In Hungary, Orban has exploited the lockdown to scrap legal recognition for transgender people. The British government has its own transphobic plans.

Rowling peddles the dangerous myth that predatory men couldgain access to public bathrooms if the Gender Recognition Act changes went through.

Yet its trans people who are far more likely to be victims of crime. In 2018, it was reported that two in five have experienced a hate crime due to their gender identity.

Rowling has signed an open letter calling for freedom of speech.

Lets use ours to shout loudly that trans women are women and trans men are men.

I was on the recent trans rights demonstration in London and it was great to feel the return to campaigning on the streets. We have to find safe ways to protest because the government is attacking us so hard.

The changes that were proposed to the Gender Recognition Act to allow people to self-declare their identity are set to be dropped and instead the old system of demanding a medical diagnosis will be retained.

It means the hope of a small amount of extra freedom will be crushed. Thats why we need protests.

But we also need to reach out to other oppressed groups. And for me, the best aspect of the London demonstration was the support for Black Lives Matter. I dont want a trans movement that is closed off from the inspiration and militancy of the great anti-racist movement.

Perhaps some trans people think its best to keep our struggle separate from others.

But that will weaken us against our enemies.

Together we can fight the system that produces both trans oppression and racism.

The SNPs mental health spokesperson Lisa Cameron has voted against legislation that prevents pro-life protesters harassing women outside abortion clinics.

For whatever reason women choose to have an abortion they should not have to cope with pro-life activists waving placardsof dead babies on them as they enter the clinic.

MP Lisa Camerons vote was submitted by proxy by the SNPs Chief Whip and was the only vote submitted by the party, which typically abstains from voting on English-only laws.

So why do it?Why was she allowedto do it by her ownparty?

It has to be said that this puts the SNPs commitment to abortion rights in question.

She can cite her reactionary views all she wants.

But that does not give her the right to try to use her position to force her personal views onto other women, setting womens rights back decades.

Thankfully the motion proposed by Labour MP Dr Rupa Huq passed with 213 votes to 47.

But on behalf of women everywhere I say shame on you Lisa Cameron.

We must protect womens right to choose without being harassed, humiliated and traumatised.

It is time to move forwards, not to be dragged back in time.

What began as a stereotype of middle aged white women that likes to complain to managers is being used as a label for any racist, middle aged white woman.

Its good to make fun of racists, but this particular meme is problematic.

It seems this term has become a way of suggesting that white women of a certain age are more likely to be racist.

While we should be challenging racism when it comes from ordinary people, we should be pointing the finger at those at the top of society who benefit from racist divisions.

And when a white woman is being racist, she should be called what she really isa racist.

Millions of British pensioners live in poverty. Its scandalous that we have the lowest state pension in Western Europe at 29 percent of average income while the EU average is 70.5 percent.

Shamefully, last year BBC bosses allowed the Tories to make them responsible for providing free TV licences for over 75s.

Now they have announced the scheme will be scrapped next month. At the same time, various commentators are calling for the ending of the triple lock on state pension annual increases and the means testing of other pensioner benefits.

Large numbers of pensioners have been shielding during this crisis. For many of them, the TV has been their only connection with the outside world and their only entertainment.

It has always been literally a lifeline for some pensioners.

We need trade unionists and campaign groups to link up with pensioner groups to support anyone who is threatened with court proceedings. Todays trade unionists are tomorrows pensioners.

Threats will not deter us: State Department dismisses Chinese sanctions against Cruz, Rubio, and others – Washington Examiner

The State Department dismissed Chinese government sanctions leveled against U.S. officials, saying that these threats will not deter us from holding China accountable for its oppression of the Uighurs.

The United States is committed to holding accountable those involved in human rights abuses around the world, including those responsible for the human rights crisis in Xinjiang, China, a State Department spokesperson told the Washington Examiner following the Monday sanctions. Beijings July 13 announcement to impose retaliatory sanctions on U.S. government officials and organizations who have worked tirelessly to expose the PRCs human rights abuses further demonstrates the CCPs refusal to take responsibility for its actions."

"These threats will not deter us from taking concrete action to hold CCP officials accountable for their ongoing campaign of human rights abuses against members of ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang, including mass detentions, coercive forced abortions and forced sterilizations, and restrictions on religious and cultural identities," the official added. There is no moral equivalency between these PRC sanctions and actions taken by countries holding accountable CCP officials for their human rights abuses.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said earlier in the day that it would be imposing corresponding sanctions against Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, GOP Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.

"We urge the U.S. to immediately withdraw its wrong decision, and stop any words and actions that interfere in China's internal affairs and harm China's interests, Hua told the Chinese press. The U.S. actions seriously interfere in Chinas internal affairs.

Last week, the Trump administration announced sanctions, including the denial of travel visas, aimed at Chinese Communist Party officials who the U.S. believes have been involved in carrying out human rights abuses against Uighurs and other minorities in China. The U.S. said the Chinese government officials were being designated for their connection to serious human rights abuse against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, which reportedly include mass arbitrary detention and severe physical abuse, among other serious abuses.

The U.S. officials targeted by China on Monday roundly derided Chinas decision.

Cruz sarcastically tweeted: Bummer. I was going to take my family to Beijing for summer vacation, right after visiting Tehran. Cruz has long been a China hawk and recently introduced legislation targeting Chinas cover-ups of the coronavirus pandemic, Hollywood censorship at the behest of China, and the Chinese Communist Partys propaganda efforts inside the U.S.

The senator later put out a statement saying that the Chinese Communist Party is terrified and lashing out after being criticized for its treatment of the Uighurs.

They forced over one million Uighurs into concentration camps and engaged in ethnic cleansing, including horrific forced abortions and sterilizations, Cruz said. These are egregious human rights atrocities that cannot be tolerated. Unfortunately for CCP leaders, I dont have plans to travel to the authoritarian regime that covered up the coronavirus pandemic and endangered millions of lives worldwide.

Back in March, Cruz and Rubio also introduced the bipartisan Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which was aimed at holding the Chinese Communist Party accountable for using forced Uighur labor.

Rubio responded to Chinas targeting by tweeting: The Communist Party of #China has banned me from entering the country. I guess they dont like me? Rubio, who is also the co-chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, introduced the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019, which passed the Senate unanimously and was signed into law by President Trump in June.

The U.S. sanctions Chinese officials for abusing human rights; Beijing sanctions us for defending human rights, the CECC said Monday. Instead of blaming others, the Peoples Republic of China must stop the mass internet, forced labor, and human rights against Uyghur and other ethnic minorities ... The CECC will not be silenced.

Brownback had tweeted that this administration continues to lead on efforts to protect #religiousfreedom & address the PRC govts abuses" following the imposition of sanctions against China.

The State Departments International Religious Freedom Report for 2019, released through Brownbacks Office of International Freedom, spent 115 pages hammering China for its persecution of religious minorities, zeroing in especially on its repression of the Uighurs.

Walter Lohman, the Director of the Heritage Foundations Asian Studies Center, told the Washington Examiner on Monday that Chinas retaliatory actions were likely targeted messaging for its own people and aimed at intimidating other countries, rather than truly aimed at scaring the U.S. itself.

The U.S. is not the primary target the U.S. is just the context for it, Lohman said. I think the point here is aimed at other countries and aimed at a domestic audience. The point is that China is not going to stand for this and shows they can do this too The message is China is strong like the United States, and its not going to take this sitting down.

Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican and ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tweeted that the #ChineseCommunistPartys sanctions on the U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom & U.S. lawmakers is just the latest example of Chairman Xi's totalitarian leadership that has turned China into a pariah state.

Since 2017, as many as 2 million Uighur Muslims and other ethnic minorities have been moved into detention camps, often referred to as concentration camps, in the western Xinjiang province of China. There, Uighurs are allegedly put through rigorous "deradicalization" programs and are mocked and tortured by Chinese guards. But the camps are just one part of alleged large-scale surveillance and oppression inflicted on Chinas Uighur population.

The Chinese Communist Party has reportedly imposed forced birth control, sterilizations, and abortions on the Uighur population in a race-based effort to reduce the minority Muslim population in the country. A late June analysis by the Associated Press found that Beijing is imposing draconian measures to slash birth rates among Uighur Muslims and other minorities as part of a sweeping campaign to curb its Muslim population while the Chinese government encourages some of the countrys Han majority to have more children.
