Facebook removes 3 white supremacist band pages leaves 117 others – The Next Web

Facebook has removed pages of the heavy-metal bands SoldierSS of Evil, Whitelaw, and Frangar for violating the platforms hate speech policies.

The ban follows a new Al Jazeera investigation that identified 120 Facebook pages with a total of over 800,000 likes of mostly heavy-metal bands and record labels with direct ties to white supremacist ideology. Al Jazeera flagged five of these pages to Facebook for breaking the platforms hate speech rules by displaying white supremacist ideology, but two are still under review.

According to Al Jazeera, the majority of the pages have been online for years, actively posting updates and advertising their merchandise, sometimes using white supremacist imagery. One of the bands whose infringing page is still up is M8l8th, a black metal music act from Ukraine whose full name means Hitlers Hammer.

The bands founder has ties to far-right nationalist movements and the band uses Nazi propaganda in its songs, such as parts of a speech by Joseph Goebbels and the official anthem of the Nazi party, Horst Wessel-Lied.

[Read: Facebook issues $100K challenge to build an AI that can identify hateful memes]

Yarno Ritzen, the journalist who led Al Jazeeras investigation, told TNW that they only flagged five of the pages, but Facebook should be aware of all 120 as most examples were simply found through Related pages.

So it shouldnt be too hard for Facebook to identify the majority of these pages by going down its own rabbit hole, Ritzen wrote in reply to TNW.

The bigger bands on the list are smarter about obscuring their obvious ties with racist ideologies like trying to blur some of the content that goes against Facebooks policies, such as swastikas, SS logos, etc. but others remain flagrantly racist. SoldierSS of Evils lyrical themes are, for example, commonly categorized as National Socialism, Antisemitism, so TNW asked Facebook why it hadnt removed the pages years earlier.

Weve yet to receive a reply, but Ritzen points out that Facebook frequently talks up its algorithm and moderators for catching a lot of hateful content but this doesnt appear to be as effective as the company would like to believe, given that some of these pages have been online for a decade.

In a statement to Al Jazeeras inquiries, a Facebook spokesperson said that hate speech is not allowed on the platform including white supremacist content and that the company would continue to improve its technologies and policies to remove hate from its platform.

Unfortunately zero tolerance doesnt mean zero incidents. We have removed three of these Pages for breaking our rules and are reviewing the remaining two against our policies, the spokesperson told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeeras revelation comes just a week after more than 500 advertisers announcing they were boycotting Facebook for not responding sufficiently to hate speech on its platform.

That didnt seem to phase Mark Zuckerberg though. In an internal Facebook meeting, the company CEO said my guess is that all these advertisers will be back on the platform soon enough.

While boycotting companies include some major names such as Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Starbucks, and Target, they are not the biggest spenders on the platform. Only three out of the top 25 ad spenders joined the boycott, which might explain Zuckerbergs bravado response.

Were not gonna change our policies or approach on anything because of a threat to a small percent of our revenue, or to any percent of our revenue, Zuckerberg said in the internal meeting, according to The Information.

While COO Sheryl Sandberg says the companystands firmly against hate and Facebooks anti-hate speech measures are being improved, Zuckerbergs comments beg the question as to how seriously the company takes the issue if it doesnt affect its bottom line.

U.S. tariff threat isn’t swaying France on taxing tech giants – Accounting Today

France held firm on its plans to resume collection of a national digital tax that hits technology giants including Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc.s Google and Facebook Inc., saying it wouldnt be swayed by threats of U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. plans to announce further details in the long-running battle with France over taxes on technology giants as soon as Friday. The tariff list to be released will be in the ballpark of $500 million to $700 million in goods, according to two people familiar with the matter. The items targeted could include levies on French wine, cheeses and handbags.

Frances response will be unchanged, the Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said in Brussels. If there is no international solution by the end of 2020, we will, as we have always said, apply our national tax. While a U.S. announcement may come Friday, the U.S. may delay the implementation of the duties until France starts collecting its tax later this year, one of the people said.

Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. Trade Representative, indicated such a move was imminent at an event Thursday, according to Politico.

Were going to announce that were going to be taking certain sanctions against France, suspending them like theyre suspending collection of the taxes right now, the Washington-based website reported Lighthizer as saying in a webcast hosted by Chatham House, a London-based policy institute. Le Maire said he would speak to Lighthizer by telephone later Friday.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin early Thursday said that he and Lighthizer had completed an extensive review before the Friday deadline to make a determination within a year of a Section 301 investigation. As of early Thursday, the pair had not discussed the matter with the president for a final decision, Mnuchin said.

The U.S. withdrew last month from international talks over a digital-tax deal after failing to reach an agreement on developing a global levy, Lighthizer said last month during a Congressional hearing.

At the time, Treasury Department spokeswoman Monica Crowley said in a statement that the U.S. suggested a pause in the talks so that governments can focus on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and reopening their economies.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has been trying to find agreement among almost 140 countries on a global tax overhaul to address how multinationals particularly big tech companies are taxed in the nations where they have users or consumers. An international deal would prevent dozens of countries implementing their own versions of levies.

Several European countries including Austria, France, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Turkey and the U.K. have already announced plans for a digital services tax. Many others have discussed implementing one and India in April expanded such a levy that it uses.

We call on the U.S. to return to the OECD negotiations on taxing digital giants, Le Maire said. Sanctions are not a way of operating between countries that are friends, as the U.S. and France are.

Dow Jones Slumps as Johnson & Johnson Boosts Outlook, Apple and Cisco Stocks Head Lower – Motley Fool

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) had posted a modest decline by late Thursday morning, down about 0.3% at 11:10 a.m. EDT. Economic news was mixed: Retail sales jumped 7.5% in June, beating expectations, but another 1.3 million Americans filed for state unemployment benefits last week. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic remains a serious problem in many U.S. states, including Texas and Florida.

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) reported results that beat analyst estimates and raised its full-year outlook, but that wasn't enough to prevent the stock from slumping. Shares of tech giants Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) were also lower as analysts updated their views on the stocks.

Sales were down and profits plunged in Johnson & Johnson's second quarter, but the company's numbers came in ahead of analyst estimates. Revenue was $18.3 billion, down 10.8% year over year, but $610 million higher than analysts were expecting. Adjusted earnings per share of $1.67 were down 35%, but $0.16 better than the average analyst estimate.

The medical devices segment was the worst performer, with sales of $4.3 billion down nearly 34% from the prior-year period. The company blamed the deferral of medical procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the weak results.

The consumer health segment suffered a 7% revenue decline to $3.3 billion, with weakness in skin health, beauty care, women's healthcare, and international baby care products partly offset by growth in over-the-counter medications and oral care products. The pharmaceutical segment saw 2.1% sales growth to $10.8 billion.

While Johnson & Johnson's sales are being hit hard by the pandemic, the company raised its full-year guidance. It now expects sales to be down between 0.8% and 2.6%, an improvement over previous guidance calling for a 2% to 5.5% decline. The company also boosted its outlook for adjusted EPS from a range of $7.50 to $7.90 to a range of $7.75 to $7.95.

Despite the estimate-beating numbers, shares of Johnson & Johnson were down about 0.4% in the morning. The stock is less than 6% below its 52-week high.

Shares of Apple and Cisco were down on Thursday as analysts staked out positions on both stocks. Apple had slumped around 1.6% by late morning, while Cisco was down roughly 2%.

Canaccord Genuity boosted its Apple price target from $310 to $444, a big jump premised upon the company's 5G and services opportunities. Canaccord expects the launch of 5G iPhones to help Apple's numbers in 2021, with a growing installed base driving sales of services and other devices. The analyst sees the services business growing faster than the company as a whole.

Analysts at JPMorgan were less optimistic on Cisco. The bank downgraded the networking hardware stock from overweight (a buy) to neutral, citing an uncertain economy and the possibility of a higher corporate tax rate following elections this year leading to a pullback in IT spending. Cisco's large enterprise and government customers are prone to pull back on spending when the economic outlook is cloudy, which can lead to a slump in revenue for the tech giant.

Apple stock carved out a new all-time high earlier this month, but shares have dipped a bit since then, down about 3.7% from the peak. Cisco stock has fallen further, sitting about 22% below its 52-week high.

Alberta gambling profit should be used to create new welfare payment, says think tank – Western Standard

Albertas more than $1.4 billion in gambling profits should be used to give the provinces poor a monthly payment, similar to welfare, says a national think tank.

Think tank Cardus, in a report released Wednesday, said the lowest-income households in Alberta pay the provincial government an estimated 7% of their annual incomes through gambling triple the proportionthat the wealthiest Albertans pay.

Those at the margins of society are paying disproportionately into the coffers, the report concludes.

The report, called Royally Flushed, outlined ways to turn Alberta Gaming and Lottery Corporation (AGLC) revenue toward reducing poverty instead of mixing it in with the provinces general tax revenue.

It recommends creating a gaming equality benefit, which would re-direct AGLCs $1.4 billion annual contribution away from general government revenues toward low-income families through monthly support payments similar to the provinces social assistance system.

It also says AGLC profits be used to incentivize savings one of the best ways to ensure families dont turn to usurious payday loans. This can boost the savings accounts of low-income families, following a model similar to government top-ups of RESPs contributions or through prize-linked savings accounts.

I hope Albertas government takes this research seriously and seizes the opportunity to turn bad habits into good, says Johanna Wolfert, a Cardus researcher and report co-author.

The report also found:

Alberta made a mistake in 2019 when it started shovelling AGLCs casino, lottery, and slot machine proceeds into general government revenues, says Brian Dijkema, Cardus Vice-President of External Affairs and co-author ofRoyally Flushed.

That simply solidified the status of Albertas gambling system as a regressive form of taxation, disproportionately taking money from those who can least afford it.

Royally Flushed: How gambling can work for, not against, Albertais available online.

Cardus is a non-partisan, faith-based think tank and registered charity dedicated to promoting a flourishing society through independent research, robust public dialogue, and thought-provoking commentary.

UFC/MMA gambling takes the lead in sports gambling on Bodog – CalvinAyre.com

The first thing most sports fans are doing now when they wake up in the morning, after pouring the much-needed cup of coffee, is tuning in to sports news to see whats going on with the NBA, NHL and the rest of the gang. Between now and September, all the major leagues in the U.S. are expected to get underway, either finishing out their seasons or, as in the case of the NFL, get things going. Things are changing on a daily basis and there is still no guarantee that the coronavirus wont force schedules to change, but, fortunately, there are plenty of other sports to keep fans occupied. This past weekend, Bodog saw a lot of action, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 251 ticket proved to be especially hot.

Sharing the spotlight in main event round were Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in a Featherweight bout. Volkanovski improved to 22-1 after winning by decision after the two went at it for all five rounds. In the Bantamweight fight on the ticket, Petr Yan scored a victory through a TKO when the referee had to step in and call off the match after a little more than three minutes into Round 5.

The response to UFC 251 was enough to keep soccer from controlling the Bodog boards. Between MLS, the Premier League, La Liga in Spain and Serie A in Italy, they usually make up the majority of wagers; however, this past weekend, soccer accounted for 31.59%. MLS was the overall winner, with 9.86% of the action. NFL 2020 Sims ranked up there once again, as well, taking 8.94% of the wagers. In golf, the Workday Charity Open, which saw Collin Morikawa take his second PGA Tour title, captured 7.96% of the bets.

As far as which individual events ran the show, the UFC fight between Usman and Masvidal captured 29.15% of the action. Usman had been the -240 favorite to win, and he didnt disappoint. 16.16% of the wagers on Bodog went to the Workday competition, followed by 12.15% for the Volkanovski/Holloway fight. Volkanovski had been favored to win at -213 and, out of the top ten sports events, six went to UFC/MMA matches. Out of those, only the womens Strawweight bout between Jessica Andrade (20-8-0) and Rose Namajunas (10-4-0) saw the underdog score a victory when Andrade was awarded the match Namajunas had been favored at -240 and Andrade was given pre-match odds of +190.

The Power of Psychedelics – Scientific American

In 2012, I had my first psychedelic experiences, as a subject in a clinical trial at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicines Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit. I was given two doses of psilocybin spaced a month apart to treat my cancer-related depression.

During one session, deep within the world the drug evoked, I found myself inside a steel industrial space. Women were bent over long tables, working. I became aware of my animosity towards my two living siblings. A woman seated at the end of a table wearing a net cap and white clothes, turned and handed me a tall Dixie cup.

You can put that in here, she said. The cup filled itself with my bilious, sibling-directed feelings. Well put it over there. She turned and placed the cup matter-of-factly on a table at the back of the room. Then she went back to her tasks.

Whenever I speak with her, Mary Cosimano, the director of guide/facilitator services at Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, mentions the women in the chamber and the cup. My experience struck a chord. For me, the women in the chamber have become a transcendent metaphor for emotional healing.

Ive thought about having a necklace made, with the cup, as a momento, she said the last time I saw her at a conference. Have you thought about it?

Prior to their 1971 prohibition, psilocybin and LSD were administered to approximately 40,000 patients, among them people with terminal cancer, alcoholics and those suffering from depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The results of the early clinical studies were promising, and more recent research has been as well.

The treatment certainly helped me. Eight years after my sessions, researchers continue to prove the same point again and again in an ongoing effort to turn psychedelic drug therapy into FDA-sanctioned medical treatment. This cant happen soon enough.

Psychopharmacology as a field had stalled. Many patients dont respond to conventional treatment with SSRIs, says Charles Grob, M.D., professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral Sciences at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the first modern clinical researcher to treat advanced-stage cancer patients suffering from depression and anxiety with psychedelics.

There is little hard evidence to show that long-term psychotherapy is effective in treating mental illness, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And theres the cost, which fewer and fewer insurers underwrite and ordinary people cant afford.

The failure of the psychotherapeutic process is located at its epicenter: the power disparity in the therapeutic dyad. Merely walking through the consulting room door, the patient subordinates herself to the therapist, who, by virtue of a title, is presumed to know more about her than she does herself. Transference and countertransferanceoffspring of Freudian psychoanalysisare cogs in the same moribund engine. The field will not change until the therapeutic relationship as it has been structured since the 19th century disappears.

Psychedelic drug therapy subverts the timeworn patriarchal hierarchy by creating an atmosphere of cooperation and trust rather than competition and domination. Or, to state it more bluntly, what women do in structured settings rather than what men do; women create cooperatives, men create hierarchies.

The treatment space is furnished like a lounge, with couches, chairs and table lamps. A music track plays. Two trained guides, one male, one female, are seated close by, ready to help if the emotional path becomes difficult. Guides are not therapists; instead they serve as trusted companions along a perilous, transformative spiritual journey. The sessions are led by the subject herself, by her feelings and perceptions throughout the experience and the way she processes them afterward.

The drug is a skeleton key which unlocks an interior door to places we dont generally have access to, says psychologist William A. Richards, one of the researchers who successfully treated patients with hallucinogens in the 1960s and early 1970s. Its a therapeutic accelerant.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is rapidly proving effective in treating PTSD. MDMA is an entactogen: it touches within in a way talking does not. Michael Mithoefer, a psychiatrist in Charleston, S.C., who has worked with military personnel and first responders, conducted a phase II clinical trial using MDMA to treat PTSD.

[Treatment is] not just revisiting the traumatic experiences, he said. Its a process of affirming a different experience on all levels, including in the body.

During MDMA sessions, subjects become more emotionally flexible and able to stay the course while exploring difficult memories. Many experience an enduring change in their response to emotional triggers. Clinicians hope to see MDMA approved by the FDA for PTSD treatment as early as 2022.

Treatment with psychedelic drugs represents a paradigm shift in the approach to mental health. For me, the change in the field is embodied by the presence of the busy women along my journey. The women treated my feelings as matters of fact, not to be avoided, reviled or fled from, but so obvious and ordinary they could be poured into a Dixie cup and set aside.

The success of the cancer studies has led to investigational treatment for patients suffering from intractable depression, early-stage Alzheimers, anorexia nervosa and smoking addiction. Within a few years, the patriarchal therapeutic model could be a thing of the past, supplanted by short-term guided treatment with psychoactive drugs.

The Power of Psychedelics - Scientific American

How entrepreneurs microdose on psychedelics to spur new …

The acclaimed author Aldous Huxley once wrote of the use of psychedelics: "It's a very salutary thing to realize that the rather dull universe in which most of us spend most of our time is not the only universe there is. I think it's healthy that people should have this experience."

Humans have used psychoactive substances in an effort to enhance their minds for thousands of years. In recent years, a trend of entrepreneurs turning to natural psychedelic substances in small doses, known as a microdose, came to prominence. The practice of small-dose consumption is said to produce benefits like increased concentration, creativity, and mood without the psychoactive "trip" often associated with such substances.

The trend has sustained lately, with some entrepreneurs embracing larger doses to improve their job performance. But many remain in the dark on such substances and their effects.

Cannaclusive cofounder Mary Pryor says she believes the public is mostly unaware of the depth of the psychedelics space.

Mary Pryor. Mary Pryor

"We all need different things to support us," said Pryor, who provides marketing and social strategy to many ventures, including McCann and Tonic CBD. Pryor said the discussion is steeped in stigma and fears of dangers of the substance, which she said isn't helping anyone. "That's unfair, and it's not accurate," she said.

While the use of psychedelics is becoming less taboo, it remains a concern to some. Such an acknowledgement was made by Iowa Rep. Jarad Klein in 2019 when he introduced a decriminalization bill in his state. The bill was defeated in a floor vote in June.

Pryor advocates for frank discussions surrounding measured, calculated psychedelic use. Deliberate use includes Pryor's microdosing of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin ("magic mushrooms"), N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and ketamine.

Her regimen includes a microdose of LSD about every two weeks and mushrooms once a month on the weekend. DMT and ketamine can be more challenging to obtain, so using them on a schedule is difficult, she said. Pryor explored ketamine treatments but had to pause them as facilitators shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. DMT, which Pryor said was more difficult to source, is something she'll use when the opportunity presents itself, she said.

Pryor said mushrooms helped her relax, while LSD takes the pressure off and provides a jolt of energy. However, she said she didn't feel the "trip" often associated with larger-dose consumption, so she's able to get through her to-do list.

She said microdosing has also helped her cope with the loss of several family members and friends during the pandemic.

"It's helped me cope through mass grief," Pryor said of her dosing routine. She added, "It's been an extra level of comfort, to a degree."

Allison Krongard, a co-CEO and cofounder of the cannabis accessory line Her Highness, recently began microdosing using mushroom-infused chocolates. The daily regimen lasted eight weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Krongard feeling a boost in creativity and helping "unlock answers to problems," she said. She said she expected to resume the process again soon, this time combining mushrooms with her morning coffee.

Allison Krongard, left, and Laura Eisman. Allison Krongard

A fan of the results so far, Krongard acknowledged the outcome has not been what she anticipated.

"I expected boosted creativity but find myself drawn to analyzing problems when [the psilocybin] kicks in," she said.

Not everyone is on board with regimented dosing. Some, like Emojibator cofounder and CEO Joe Vela, instead prefer to use LSD and mushrooms when needed or as he said, "At least once a year, or whenever I feel it could help."

Joe Vela. Joe Vela

Vela also said he believed psychedelics improved his energy and creative levels. "Even a microdose can flip the prospect of a long, boring task into one that is exhilarating," he said.

Vela said he used various dosages of the two psychedelics to kick-start his ideation and lift any creative blocks he encountered. His first breakthrough came while he was touring the country with his band, Tweed, which coincided with the development of his company concept.

When he consumes a more substantial dosage, the pleasure-tech cofounder and musician typically takes one or two hits of LSD, or between one and three grams of psilocybin, he said. When microdosing, he combines "a finely grinded fingernail size" dose of mushrooms into his coffee, he said. Aside from those loose parameters, Vela doesn't follow a routine but hopes to have one in place at some point. That said, he's found results from varied dosages, he said.

Vela explained how his LSD and mushroom trips have left him feeling humble and connected to the earth. On one occasion, he recalled seeing what he described as an infinite feedback loop that connected all living things. "I think this has encouraged me to consider my impact on the world with business and personal decisions, for example, creating free platforms for education, like Masturbation Month," Vela said.

Like with any illegal substance, it's best to receive any psychedelics from reliable sources, be it a seller or cultivator. Doing so provides buyers with the best chances of securing quality substances.

Consumers are advised not to dive in headfirst once they've obtained their psychedelics. Instead, proponents like Her Highness' Krongard suggest the "start low; go slow" method that's been applied to consuming various drugs, both medicinal and recreational. Krongard likes the slow approach because "it's easy to get your bearings" when gradually consuming, she said.

Regardless of the approach, Vela encourages people to lose their expectations for the trip. "If you put too much pressure on generating a good business idea, it's not going to happen." Vela said. "Creativity happens most when you are relaxed and you are listening without judgment."

Emojibator's founder suggested taking the focus off of the final goal. "Instead of worrying about the finish line on a project or idea, consider asking yourself, and the people joining you, open-ended questions," he said. Some of Vela's favorites include: "How can we do this bigger?" and "What will leave a lasting impression?"

Above all else, the artist and entrepreneur implores people to stay in the moment. From there, each person must find what works best for them, he said.

"Everyone's body is different, so it might take a different combination of timing and dosage to get your desired effects," he added.

Pure Extracts Has Significant Leverage To Both The Cannabis and Psychedelic Sectors – Technical420 – Technical420

Pure Extract Technologies Inc. (Pure Extracts) represents a differentiated growth opportunity that has attractive leverage to both the cannabis extraction and the psychedelics markets. We have a favorable outlook on how the business is approaching each of these markets and find this to be significant.

While most companies are focused on the cultivation and sale of cannabis and psychedelic products, Pure Extracts is focused on extracting the most valuable molecules from each substance. The margins that are associated with this facet of the business are high which we view as an attractive aspect of the story.

Pure Extracts has plans to submit its Dealers License application to Health Canada. The granting of the license would allow the Company to extract psilocybin for businesses that need the extract to conduct clinical trials. The current market price of extracted psilocybin is massive and it is not expected to decline anytime soon.

A Differentiated Growth Story to be Aware of

Another of the reasons we are excited about Pure Extracts is the diversity of the business. From cannabis vapes, tinctures and edibles to psilocybin, the Company is focused on extracting and selling key THC and CBD input products to other businesses. Pure Extracts is also immersed in the functional mushroom market and has positioned itself to become the premier commercialization and manufacturing partner for both functional and psychedelic firms.

During the last decade, there has been a substantial rise in demand for functional mushroom products and the industry has benefited from an increase in the number of people that are focused on the natural health market. Most functional mushroom products are powdered, and this format limits the amount of active ingredients that can be consumed. Through the extraction process, Pure Extracts can create a concentrated dose of active ingredients that can be accurately measured and consistently manufactured, which will open-up new markets with new consumers. By offering a differentiated process, the Company will be able to stand out from the competition and we expect this to play an important role in the success of the product.

Forms Strategic Relationship to Support Growth

One of the most exciting aspects of the Pure Extracts story is related to the consulting agreement that it has with Dr. Alexander MacGregor, Founder & CEO of Transpharm Canada Inc., the parent company of the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology. Through the relationship, Pure Extracts has access to Transpharms fully compliant Health Canada licensed GMP manufacturing and testing facility.

The agreement accelerates Pure Extracts ability to formulate and develop new psychedelic therapies and thereby serve as the commercialization engine for extracting psychedelics for its partner companies. We believe that this will be a key driver of shareholder value over the long term.

As the Company works on obtaining a Dealers License from Health Canada, Pure Extracts will initially sell functional mushroom products and is applying to Health Canada for a Natural Health Products (NHP) site licence. Once the Company is granted the license, it will be able to buy, sell, test and produce psychedelics within an EU Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment. The management team has been highly focused on forming strategic partnerships prior to its being granted a Dealers License and has signed several NDAs with functional product firms to explore joint development strategies.

In the Middle of a Major Transition

Pure Extracts is in the middle of a major transition and the expansion into the psychedelic market is an extension of its extraction capabilities. Going forward, the Company will continue to be laser focused on rapidly scaling its hemp and cannabis extraction business and we will monitor how the management team is able to execute on this.

So far, Pure Extracts has been contacted by several functional and psychedelic mushroom companies to formulate and commercialize biomass for them. We believe that there will be strong initial demand for the Companys services and will monitor how this side of the business is able to ramp up.

One of the additional reasons we are excited about Pure Extracts is due to the expectations that are associated with their operations. The Company expects the functional mushroom extraction business to ramp up later this year. The functional mushroom business will help Pure Extracts learn more about the different types of mushroom species and allow it to more accurately formulate them into other compounds that will ultimately make the psychedelics more effective.

An Opportunity that is on our Radar

Pure Extracts will be able to generate revenue on the cannabis side of the business as it continues to execute on the psychedelic and functional mushroom vertical. Over the long term, we expect the business to find substantial synergies between the cannabis and the psychedelic and functional mushroom divisions.

Later this Fall, Pure Extracts plans to complete a go-public transaction and this is an opportunity that we are closely following. When compared to other businesses that are focused on the psychedelic market, we believe that Pure Extracts represents a differentiated opportunity that has substantial potential catalysts for growth.

If you are interested in learning more about how Pure Extracts plans to disrupt the psychedelic industry, please send an email to support@mushroomstocks.com to be added to our distribution list.

Atomic Weapons Testing While Troops Looked On Did It Increase Their Cancer Risks? – Forbes

It turns out it did not. A new study, by John Boice, Jr. and colleagues, reports the results of 114,270 nuclear weapons test participants that were followed for up to 65 years. Contrary to decades of anecdotal reports, the study concluded that there were no statistically significant occurrence of cancers or adverse health effects from radiation among these soldiers.

OperationBuster-Jangle -Dogatomic bomb test at theNevada Test Site, had troops participating in ... [+] the exerciseDesert Rock I. It had a yield of 21 kilotons of TNT, and was the first U.S. nuclear field exercise conducted with live troops maneuvering on the ground. Troops were six miles from the blast. November 1, 1951.

Significant health effects of mesothelioma from asbestos, as well as berylliosis from beryllium, were observed, as was the case for many Cold War sites that routinely used these materials. But not from radiation

Approximately 235,000 military personnel participated at one of the 230 above-ground nuclear weapons tests in the United States from 1945 through 1962. At the Nevada Test Site, these soldiers participated in military maneuvers, observed nuclear weapons tests, or provided technical support (see figures). At the Pacific Proving Ground they served aboard ships or were stationed on islands during or after nuclear weapons tests.

The conclusion of the study was that no statistically significant radiation associations were observed among these 114,270 nuclear weapons test participants that were followed for up to 65 years.

While many weapons workers, soldiers and people have been monetarily compensated for being at, or downwind of, these sites, the cancer rates of these groups, populations and workers are no higher than the general population and, in many cases, are lower. There is no evidence their cancers came from radiation, and lots of evidence that they did not.

I dont at all mind giving sick people money, but I do mind pretending it has to do with low levels of radiation.

We have seen similar results from the Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb blasts in 1945. The explosion of atom bombs over the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 resulted in very high casualties from the blast but left a large number of survivors who had been exposed to radiation at the moment of the blast, at levels that could be reasonably ascertained. Extensive follow-up of a large cohort of survivors (120,000) and of their offspring (77,000) was initiated in 1947 and continues to this day.

Survivors that received huge whole body doses of 1 Gy irradiation (~1000 mSV, ~100 rem) have a significantly elevated rate of cancer (42% increase) but only limited decrease of longevity (about 1 year), while their offspring show no increased frequency of abnormalities and no detectable elevation in mutation rates.

Yet the general public, and indeed most scientists, are unaware of this, and widely believe that irradiated survivors suffered a very high cancer burdens and dramatically shortened life spans, and that their progeny were affected by elevated mutation rates and frequent abnormalities.

This misperception has led to dramatic fears of even low levels of radiation and fears of necessary medical radiological procedures. In other words, people have died because of this unfounded fear of radiation.

In addition, the often-hyped dead zones following nuclear blasts in futuristic scenarios also never materialized, even in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These cities were rebuilt completely and had no radioactive legacy, and no increased incidences of cancer outside of those exposed at the actual moment of the atomic blast in 1945.

St George Utah, the site of the most downwind deposition of fallout from the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, has the second lowest cancer rates in the country. They also had no increased cancers from radiation.

It is very difficult, and very rare, for anyone to be hurt by any dose of radiation obtainable in our society, even working at nuclear sites.

Above-ground atomic bomb test at the Nevada Test Site while troops look on.

Not that we havent messed up in some ways. TheCastle Bravo testin the Pacific was probably the largest generator of fallout in history as it was detonated too close to the ground and the yield was larger than anyone expected.

At 15 megatons, that hydrogen bomb was the largest detonation ever by the United States and was one of the events that led to banning above-ground nuclear tests precisely because of that fallout and its horrible effect on the people of the Marshall Islands.

But that was a rare event.

Contrary to the hype of Fukushima, and even Chernobyl, the observable radiation health effects from both accidents were small. In the case of Fukushima, it was as close to zero as one can get. In the case of Chernobyl, it was still very small.

The reason you might not know this, is that almost everyone uses the wrong model to predict health effects from radiation at these levels, and anyone who gets cancer, which is common in every society, then attributes it to any nuclear or radiation event they can.

Only recently have the global health, nuclear and radiation agencies realized that error and are moving to correct. However, as with most scientists, this change has been quiet and sort of cloaked in scientific jargon. Its also very political since it involves a lot of money and has spanned a lot of time.

But the implications are enormous.

The latest scientific society to make clear that we have been doing this wrong is probably the most qualified to understand this issue the Health Physics Society. The Health Physics Society is the scientific body that includes radiation protection scientists. And they put out a position statement on Radiation Risk In Perspective, in which they advise against estimating health risks to people from exposures to ionizing radiation that are anywhere near natural background levels because statistical uncertainties at these low levels are great.

In other words, any possible adverse health effects resulting from radiation doses below 10,000 mrem (100 mSv) will not be detectable.

Background radiation across the Earth varies from 3 mrem/yr (0.03 mSv/yr) over the oceans to 10,000 mrem/yr (100 mSv/yr) in areas of high elevation made up of granitic rocks. Thus, it is not surprising that populations subjected to radiation levels of 10,000 mrem (100 mSv) or below, either natural or man-made, show radiation effects that are not statistically different from zero.

The reason that we refer to it as not statistically different from zero is that other normal causes of these health effects, particularly cancer, are thousands of times more common and more effective than radiation at producing cancers of all types, so there can never be a population with zero cancers.

As an example, in a general population of 100,000 people in the United States, about 40,000 1,600 people will naturally develop cancer over their lives with no help from radiation. If you subject this same population to radiation levels ten times their normal radiation levels, 40,000 1,600 will develop cancer over their lives.

There will be no difference. But its still a lot of cancer and that scares people.

Such is the case with nuclear workers around the world, people who live next to nuclear plants, downwinders from the Nevada Test Site, the people around Fukushima, nuclear workers at Hanford and other sites, and these soldiers that watched the bomb tests. These groups have no more cancers than the general population, some of them have less.

But the fear of radiation keeps growing. And that fear itself does more harm than good.

Samsung Doubles Down On Crypto With Support For Payments Blockchain Stellar – Forbes

Samsung Blockchain And Stellar Collaboration

TheStellarDevelopment Foundation (SDF), a non-profit organization that supports the development and growth of theStellarnetwork, today announced the integration ofStellarinto the Samsung Blockchain Keystore.

The integration will allow Samsung device users to be able to securely store the private keys associated with their Stellar blockchain wallet. This solves what has traditionally been a challenging part of the blockchain user experience which is the ability to manage private keys in a secure manner. Typically, the more secure the solution, the more challenging the experience is for the user.

The ability to manage private keys in both a secure and user friendly way is a key hurdle that the blockchain community must clear if it is able to expand its appeal to a broader set of mass market users from the technologically inclined early adopters and hobbyists that predominantly use the technology today.

To have a really simple way for users to store their keys and utilize them on-chain is so important, and why we are excited about this announcement, said Denelle Dixon, CEO and Executive Director of SDF in an interview.

While software wallets that store private keys on behalf of users on computers and devices have been available for some time, they have often suffered from security vulnerabilities as they share the phone, tablet or computer with other applications which can eavesdrop on the software and steal private keys. As a bearer asset, those with the private keys have full control over a users funds and recovery from theft is seldom successful.

A more secure approach is to use hardware level segregation, where a separate computer processor that can only be accessible by authorized software is used to protect keys from prying eyes. Thats a capability that has Samsung rolled out, as Forbes.com reported on earlier in the year.

"We created a secure processor dedicated to protecting your PIN, password, pattern, and Blockchain Private Key," Samsungwroteon its website, announcing the new S20 Galaxy phones. "Combined with the Knox platform, security is infused into every part of your phone, from hardware to software. So private data stays private."

Samsung has supported Ethereum since the release of its Galaxy S10 in March 2019, and then added bitcoin support in the summer of the same year. Since then, over 30 digital coins, including stable coins have been integrated into the phone.

With this integration, SDF has aligned itself with a formidable distribution partner; the electronics giant which makes up 19% of global smartphone sales and last year sold almost 300 million phones according to data siteStatista.

While the wallet and Keystore is only available on a handful of devices and regions Samsung Galaxy Smartphones: Galaxy S20 Series, Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Note 10 Series, Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S10 series as people cycle through their devices to newer models, there will be a natural increase in adoption of Samsung devices that use the Stellar blockchain.

The new Samsung S10 phones are displayed in a demonstration room after an event Wednesday, Feb. 20, ... [+] 2019, in San Francisco. Samsung is hailing the 10th anniversary of its first smartphone with three new models that seem unlikely to reverse a sales slump in an industry recycling the same ideas. The S10 line-up unveiled Wednesday in San Francisco all boast fancy cameras, sleek screens covering the entire front of the device and at least 128 gigabytes of storage, the most important features to consumers looking for a new smartphone. Stellars integration into the Samsung Blockchain Keystore is a significant step for our network and the incredible ecosystem of applications built on this platform. Samsung provides a key management solution that is user-friendly and drives greater adoption of blockchain technology. With this integration, weve opened up to a new network of users that can benefit from the combined innovation ofStellarand Samsung, said Dixon.

For SDF, its not purely the ability to provide an easy-to-use key management capability that is exciting for the organization, its also the opportunity to further grow the ecosystem by providing a platform around which Stellar-based business can build innovative applications that can be used by users.

With Stellars blockchain services now being available through the Samsung Blockchain Keystore,Stellarecosystem developers are able to create blockchain apps and services for Samsung Galaxy Smartphones, in addition to existingStellar-based products and applications.

Thats a point reinforced by Dixon: Its just the beginning as we work together to empower more developers and users to leverage blockchain and the capabilities presented by this integration.

At the time of announcement, at least fourStellar-based businesses have committed to adopting the requisite SDKs to make their applications available in the Keystore, including DSTOQ, SatoshiPay, Litemint, and Nodle.

The Smartphone Race Is On

Samsung is not the only phone provider to have dived into crypto. Phone manufacturer HTC was one of the first to market with the announcement in 2018 that its Exodus 1 smartphone would be able to natively store bitcoin or Ether cryptocurrencies.

Device manufacturer Apple AAPL , which company holds 12.4% of the smartphone market, has been notably coy about their cryptocurrency aims. Apples devices also have secure keystore vault, which is accessible through the companys CryptoKit SDK. The Software Development Kit was released in the summer of last year but without the fanfare that similar developments by Samsung and HTC received.

Apple, it seems, seem to be prepared to support crypto, but have no appetite for making it the centerpiece of their brand in the way that Samsung and HTC appears to have done. Perhaps its because the company has been working on a geographic expansion into China which has adopted a hostile position towards cryptocurrency, in general. Alternatively, Apple, never one to be a follower, may be of the opinion that it is best to emphasize technology where it has demonstrated a first-mover advantage and play down where it is a fast follower on the heels of its competitors innovations.

SDF Continues To Progress Well

Notwithstanding, the lack of appetite from Apple, SDF appears to be on a roll with its partnership with Samsung. The foundation, in fact, has had a busy year so far.

Earlier in the year, SDF announced that it had partnered with wallet provider Abra in a move which intends both to put the storage and trading of Stellar into the hands of retail users in developed countries as well as providing an alternative banking offering for those in disadvantaged countries that are subject to capital controls and high inflation who wish to work outside the traditional monetary system.

Abra's wallet now integrates with Stellar

Abra was in the news recently, for settling a case with the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading commission concerning the illegal sale of security-based swaps to investors, which was a mechanism that the wallet provider briefly provided to U.S. users as a way of synthetically representing cryptocurrencies.

Charity Giant Behind Give.org Launches a Blockchain Donation Platform – Cointelegraph

Better Business Bureau, or BBB the charity giant behind Give.org launched a privacy-focused donation platform built on the Ardor (ARDR) blockchain.

According to a July 4 announcement, BBBs charity monitoring organization Wise Giving Alliance launched blockchain-powered donation platform, GiveSafely.io. The platform uses distributed ledger technology to facilitate donations to BBB-accredited charities while ensuring donor data is only shared when permitted:

The platform also aims to restore trust in the online donation model, address concerns people have about misuse of their personal data and potential hacks. All personal information is stored on the Ardor blockchain and is only accessible to charities with donor permission.

Head of GiveSafely, Ezra Vazquez-DAmico, explained that GiveSafely enables a peer-to-peer donor-charity relationship. Furthermore, the platform does not have access to its users personal information, donations, or payment details.

Cryptocurrency holders can donate crypto assets directly to charities. This is motivated by an Edelman report stating that 25% of wealthy Millennials hold or use digital currencies and 31% have expressed an interest in using it. Fiat donations are also accepted.

Per the announcement, the move is meant as a way to attract younger donors. The announcement reads:

GiveSafely.io has been launched with the aim of reaching out to younger and more technologically proficient donors who are less likely to make donations compared to older or less technologically savvy ones.

Furthermore, donors using the platform will also be rewarded with charity experiences. Those experiences are 15-20 minutes long and include healthy cooking tips and discussions about how it is to work at the charity involved.

Charities available on the platform include Save the Children, Easterseals, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Population Media Center, RedRover, Wild Animal Sanctuary, Cure Alzheimer's Fund and World Emergency Relief.

Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology enable a particularly high transparency standard and lower transaction costs. Both features are highly sought after in the space of charitable donations where every penny counts.

According to Ray Youssef the co-founder and CEO of peer-to-peer crypto exchange Paxful the future of philanthropy lies in blockchain technology. In May, his firm actually launched a fundraising campaign to combat the ongoing pandemic in Africa.

Smucker’s works with Farmer Connect for blockchain-based coffee transparency – The Block

The J.M. Smucker Company is working to pioneer a new era in coffee transparency by utilising blockchain technology.

Smuckers is partnering with Farmer Connect, a startup which utilises IBMs blockchain to tackle traceability in the farm-to-fork journey. The company came to prominence when launching its consumer-facing provenance app at this years CES which until this year was hardly a hive of blockchain activity.

Now, that consumer-facing app has a major client on board. Once consumers scan a QR code on their bag of coffee, their device will take them to the Thank My Farmer website, which provides information about where their coffee was grown, processed and exported. The coffee being trialled by Smuckers is the 1850 100% Colombian bagged.

The company cited a study from the IBM Institute for Business Value which found 71% of those surveyed, who said sustainability was very important, would pay a premium for sustainable and environmentally responsible brands.

We know that consumers are increasingly interested in transparency in the supply chains for the products they enjoy, and we have been committed to helping promote this as part of our coffee sustainability strategy, said Joe Stanziano, SVP and general manager of coffee at The J.M. Smucker Company.

Our work with Farmer Connect and IBM not only helps connect coffee lovers to the producers who provide their favourite morning drink, it also gives them the opportunity to support these hardworking smallholder farmers and their families.

Speaking to this publication at CES in January, Jason Kelly, general manager for blockchain services at IBM, said sustainability drives will continue to increase, both from blockchain and other emerging technologies. IBM is seeing blockchain act as a catalyst for AI, IoT, and automation across the industry at large, from provenance of electronic components in the supply chain, to consumer confidence and trust in products and services, including ethical sourcing and sustainability of what makes up those products, he said.

Auchter’s Art: The confusing narrative of Betsy DeVos – Michigan Radio

I feel the need to let you know this cartoon was inspired by the first Betsy DeVos story this week:

Several Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia have joined in a lawsuit against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, accusing the Trump administration of trying to unlawfully divert pandemic relief funds from public schools to private schools.

I completed it before I realized there was a second Betsy DeVos story:

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Tuesday assailed plans by some local districts to offer in-person instruction only a few days a week and said schools must be "fully operational" even amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Now as I write this, I see there is a third Betsy DeVos story:

If schools arent going to reopen, were not suggesting pulling funding from education but instead allowing families ... (to) take that money and figure out where their kids can get educated if their schools are going to refuse to open, Betsy DeVos told Fox News in an interview.

But probably the best Betsy DeVos story this week wasn't actually about her (but might as well have been):

The institute promoting the laissez-faire capitalism of writer Ayn Rand, who in the novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead introduced her philosophy of objectivism to millions of readers, was approved for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of up to $1 million, according to data released Monday by the Trump administration.

I apologize for not being able to keep up.

In an environment of worsening economicconditions, Dagny Taggart, vice president in charge of operations, works to repair Taggart Transcontinentals crumbling Rio Norte Lineto service Colorado, the last booming industrial area in the country. Her efforts are hampered by the fact that many of the countrysmost talented entrepreneurs are retiring and disappearing. The railroadscrisis worsens when the Mexican government nationalizes TaggartsSan Sebastian Line. The line had been built to service FranciscodAnconias copper mills, but the mills turn out to be worthless.Francisco had been a successful industrialist, and Dagnys lover, but has become a worthless playboy. To solve the railroads financialproblems, Dagnys brother Jim uses political influence to pass legislationthat destroys Taggarts only competition in Colorado. Dagny mustfix the Rio Norte Line immediately and plans to use Rearden Metal,a new alloy created by Hank Rearden. When confronted about the SanSebastian mines, Francisco tells Dagny he is deliberately destroyingdAnconia Copper. Later he appears at Reardens anniversary partyand, meeting him for the first time, urges Rearden to reject thefreeloaders who live off of him.

The State Science Institute issues a denunciation of Rearden metal, and Taggarts stock crashes. Dagny decides to start her own companyto rebuild the line, and it is a huge success. Dagny and Reardenbecome lovers. Together they discover a motor in an abandoned factorythat runs on static electricity, and they seek the inventor. Thegovernment passes new legislation that cripples industry in Colorado.Ellis Wyatt, an oil industrialist, suddenly disappears after settingfire to his wells. Dagny is forced to cut trains, and the situationworsens. Soon, more industrialists disappear. Dagny believes thereis a destroyer at work, taking men away when they are most needed.Francisco visits Rearden and asks him why he remains in businessunder such repressive conditions. When a fire breaks out and theywork together to put it out, Francisco understands Reardens lovefor his mills.

Rearden goes on trial for breaking one of the new laws, but refuses to participate in the proceedings, telling the judgesthey can coerce him by force but he wont help them to convict him.Unwilling to be seen as thugs, they let him go. Economic dictatorWesley Mouch needs Reardens cooperation for a new set of socialistlaws, and Jim needs economic favors that will keep his ailing railroadrunning after the collapse of Colorado. Jim appeals to Reardenswife Lillian, who wants to destroy her husband. She tells him Rearden andDagny are having an affair, and he uses this information in a trade. The new set of laws, Directive 10-289,is irrational and repressive. It includes a ruling that requiresall patents to be signed over to the government. Rearden is blackmailedinto signing over his metal to protect Dagnys reputation.

Dagny quits over the new directive and retreats to a mountain lodge. When she learns of a massive accident at the Taggart Tunnel, shereturns to her job. She receives a letter from the scientist shehad hired to help rebuild the motor, and fears he will be the nexttarget of the destroyer. In an attempt to stop him from disappearing, she follows him in an airplane and crashes in the mountains. Whenshe wakes up, she finds herself in a remote valley where all theretired industrialists are living. They are on strike, calling ita strike of the mind. There, she meets John Galt, who turns outto be both the destroyer and the man who built the motor. She fallsin love with him, but she cannot give up her railroad, and she leavesthe valley. When she returns to work, she finds that the governmenthas nationalized the railroad industry. Government leaders wanther to make a speech reassuring the public about the new laws. Sherefuses until Lillian comes to blackmail her. On the air, she proudlyannounces her affair with Rearden and reveals that he has been blackmailed. Shewarns the country about its repressive government.

With the economy on the verge of collapse, Francisco destroys therest of his holdings and disappears. The politicians no longer evenpretend to work for the public good. Their vast network of influencepeddling creates worse chaos, as crops rot waiting for freight trainsthat are diverted for personal favors. In an attempt to gain controlof Franciscos mills, the government stages a riot at Rearden Steel. But the steelworkers organize and fight back, led by Francisco, who has been working undercover at the mills. Francisco saves Reardenslife, then convinces him to join the strike.

Just as the head of state prepares to give a speech onthe economic situation, John Galt takes over the airwaves and deliversa lengthy address to the country, laying out the terms of the strikehe has organized. In desperation, the government seeks Galt to makehim their economic dictator. Dagny inadvertently leads them to him,and they take him prisoner. But Galt refuses to help them, evenafter he is tortured. Finally, Dagny and the strikers rescue himin an armed confrontation with guards. They return to the valley, where Dagny finally joins the strike. Soon, the countrys collapseis complete and the strikers prepare to return.

Brauchler: The crime wave in Colorado has been building for a while, but now its at a breaking point – The Denver Post

A mere ten weeks ago, I wrote in these pages of a coming crime wave. The numbers are in for the first half of 2020. I confess that I underestimated the speed and intensity of that wave, and where it would strike. It is bad, but not equally bad across Colorado.

The reasons are several, but what has changed since then, and is cause for great concern, are the ramifications from the perceived attack on the law enforcement officers we need to protect us from this surging violence. Because we lack the courage and common sense to make the changes necessary to stem the rising tide of crime, things are likely going to get worse.

Denver is on pace to have its most murderous year in a decade, according to The Denver Post. Aurora too. My office covers approximately 88% of the population of Aurora. As compared to the first six months of 2019, there has been a 400% increase in filed murder cases, in my district attorneys office, which do not include unsolved murders. The rest of Arapahoe County has seen a 60% reduction. Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln have none. Auroras filed attempted murders have grown by 20%. Arapahoes by 9. Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln have seen a combined 2 cases.

Gang violence is resurgent. Agencies are so worried about liability in this environment; they have heavily curtailed proactive law enforcement. Arrest warrants, even for gang members on gun charges, go un-executed. Law enforcement is on its heels. We have spent years watering down our bail and juvenile justice laws to the point that recalcitrant offenders remain on our streets.

There are concerning trends with victims. Four of Auroras murders and twelve attempted murders have occurred since the killing of George Floyd. Nearly 75% of those victims are black.

Aggravated robbery (with weapons) is down across Arapahoe, but up in Aurora. Home burglaries are up 18% in Arapahoe and 61% in Aurora. Domestic Violence, both misdemeanors and felonies, have grown by double digits across Arapahoe.

From January to June 2020, motor vehicle thefts are up nearly 60% in the metro area 1579 vehicles were stolen in June alone. WTW? Comparing April to June this year to last, car thefts are up 55% to 72% across the entire metro area, except in Denver. Denver, who uniquely continues to jail car thieves despite concerns about the coronavirus in jails, has seen only a 9% increase. There is an obvious lesson there. Anecdotally, officers hear from car thieves they apprehend, some repeatedly, that they know they are going to be let go for a property crimes, so, why stop?

The reasons for this unforgiving and unsustainable trend include the devastation of the job market from the government-imposed shutdown, the seasonal uptick in crime during warmer weather put on steroids after months of house-arrest lite, and the increasingly permissive laws and rules seeking to get offenders back onto our streets as quickly as possible. But, there is more.

Since my column, we have witnessed in Denver and Aurora considerable amounts of unchecked lawlessness. Yes, of course, the vast majority of protesters exercising their First Amendment rights were peaceful. But you saw what I saw. Fire after fire, private and public property defaced and permanently damaged, and monuments destroyed, all with seeming impunity.

Our Capitol still bears the same sickening months-old graffiti. There is no sense of urgency in either fixing what has been broken, or holding those accountable who broke our laws and defiled public property. That sheepishness, that willingness to be cowed by the figurative mob amidst the worry about political backlash and being canceled is noticed by criminals too. They see apathy. They see no consequences.

Name the public officials who have had the temerity to forcefully and repeatedly condemn the criminals and their crimes. For the handful who have commented at all, they have provided lip service, reserving their harshest criticisms for law enforcement.

We are entering an Atlas Shrugged period in law enforcement. We will see the exodus of experienced, good officers, the ones who we want to train the next generation of officers. There have been tacit and unchecked denunciations of an entire profession of officers as overt or subconscious racists incapable of acting for the greater good. We have rushed to pass a law, the tenor of the first draft of which was we dont like you or trust you. We have told officers and recruits alike that any use of force under any circumstances can now result in lawsuits and administrative actions that may cost them their jobs, reputations, retirements, and savings. Police are being kicked out of schools in Denver, because, we are told, they represent more of a risk to the students, than their absence. How will that generation view police in the future?

In Aurora, there were gas cans and homemade weapons brought with the intention to burn a police station down. Where is the outrage? Where is the public condemnation by Aurora City Council? Where are the arrests? Instead, there are discussions of defunding them.

Oh yeah, we still expect them to put their lives at risk to protect us from the evil that remains out there. Who wants that job?

We are entering a troubling time like no other in my memory. A crime wave is cresting over us, while we defund and demoralize our lifeguards. Hold your breath, this could get rough.
