Empathy: The First Step Towards Inclusion – All Together – Society of Women Engineers

Empathy: The First Step Towards Inclusion was co-written by Dr. Adetoun Yeaman and Dr. Sreyoshi Bhaduri.

Even as the world grapples with the debilitating COVID-19 pandemic, the past few weeks have found many in our communities struggling with the repercussions of another long, vicious pandemic that of racism. Some of us had the privilege to switch off the news and take a break from social media. But for about 25% of the United States, which includes people of color, even stepping away to seek respite and bolster mental health is a privilege that few can afford. In these times, more than ever, empathy is an important skill which can help individuals work towards better inclusion.

Empathy is the ability to see the world through anothers perspective. Casually, empathy is defined as the act of putting oneself in another persons shoes. Through being in another persons shoes, an individual may have the opportunity to gain a deeper or more meaningful understanding of what someone else may have lived and experienced. This ability thus allows individuals to be sensitized to others needs and sufferings. The way past indifference and towards allyship aimed at inclusion is illuminated primarily through empathy. Author Chinua Achebe, in his collection of essays, hints at lack of empathy being a result of an unimaginative brain.

Like any other professional development skill, empathy is one that needs to be developed and once developed, continually honed. For engineers, this skill is twice-blessed; it allows engineers to connect not only with the people they impact but also the individuals they work with, as they work in teams to solve problems, engage in design and innovate on technologies. While empathy is a human ability, possessed by everyone, studies suggest it can be enhanced or diminished in various instances.

In the United States, empathy found prominence in conversations on race and racial disparities through the works of Kenneth Clark in the second quarter of the 20th century. There has been more recent discourse on empathy and its importance in the engineering field in the 21st century. Many intentional efforts are being made to incorporate empathy into engineering curricula and prepare future engineers to be more empathic. Some conceptualizations of empathy relevant to engineering include the framework for empathy in design, which describes empathy as a process of discovery followed by immersion, connection and detachment; and the model of empathy in engineering, which presents empathy as a way of being, a practice orientation and a learnable skill. People can learn to be empathic!

Empathy is a good starting point on the journey to inclusion in engineering. However, empathy alone will likely not be enough, and at times, may be grossly inadequate. The argument against empathy puts forth the rationale that differences in power dynamics disallow individuals to truly put themselves in anothers shoes or understand their lived experiences. These power dynamics are exacerbated when people interact with individuals who have significantly diverse lives because of intersections of race, gender or socio-economic status, among others.

Consider as an example, a manager, M, who needs to decide among two team members, A and B, to lead a high-visibility project. A, although better skilled than B for this project, is also a new parent. M was a new parent once and puts themselves in As shoes. M recalls their own lived experiences as a new parent and remembers how difficult managing time was for them during those days with the new baby. Empathizing with A, M may then decide to give the project to B, intending to not add unnecessary stress for A. However, while this act may arise from empathy-backed intentions, the outcome may not always be for the better. As lived experiences are different from the managers (Ms). Going beyond empathy, and asking A to decide for themselves, while giving them the option to back out, may have been a better solution since it allows more autonomy for the employee who is directly impacted by such decisions.

Thus, empathy alone may often not be enough for inclusive decision-making or working in teams. However, empathy is a good first step sensitizing individuals to struggles that others around them may be facing and informing considerate decision making.

We must be careful to not stop at empathy alone. Empathy helps us get to allyship, where we are sensitized towards and lend support to those who have been systematically marginalized and disadvantaged. However, true inclusion can only happen when we go beyond empathy and extend allyship to accompliceship, where, in the latter, we actively partake in dismantling oppressive structures.

Inclusion can be thought of as a journey of a thousand miles, and empathy its first step.

Are you actively honing your empathic skills today?

Spiritually Speaking: Properly wearing the armor of God – The Philadelphia Tribune

With everything going on in our world today, my question to you is how does one put on the full armor of God in the midst of pandemic, the continuation of overt racism, state sanctioned discrimination and even murder? The Bible says, Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devils schemes. Ephesians 6:11. This passage may not tell you how to put on the armor, but it certainly lets you know why you need it.

Thats kind of why I pose the question. I wish I could say most of this is original but its not. Im paraphrasing most of it but I think its important to understand when people talk about warfare, Satans power in the physical world or, just plain battling against sin, this is what theyre talking about.

Spiritual warfare as my Bible says (for believers), is fought in the mind, in the emotions and in the will. It is in these areas that we do battle and most times we think were struggling with ourselves, our own weaknesses of flesh and blood, and discipline and integrity, pride and envy. When in actuality, were really struggling against the devils schemes. Lets not overlook or be complacent about where a lot of this is coming from.

At these rather intense times, we sometimes lose sight of the fact that Satan and his forces have already been defeated and to a large extent disarmed. We give him power when we forget this simple little fact. Our emotions take over and in a state of complete exasperation, judgement gets clouded and actions happen in the spur of a moment. Ive said on many occasions that the fight is fixed in our favor but we do have to go through the mental reality of this in order maintain control and think ourselves into the solutions we so desperately need to navigate what some believers term a temporary existence called life.

Here is something that sums it up pretty well straight out of my Bible. How do we put on spiritual armor? We do so by daily absorbing scripture as truth, living in obedience to God, sharing the gospel and trusting Christ. Thats how to put armor on, study the Word, live according to biblical principles and believe that we live in a place infused with Jesus protection. That knowledge will protect us as we come under spiritual attack. It doesnt protect us from spiritual attack. But it does it makes us less vulnerable, less susceptible to the devils schemes i.e. better able to handle what comes at us.

You see in this world Satan is free to tempt, deceive and entice, but he has no authority over you. My Bible says when we overcome temptation in the spiritual sense; we play out the victory in the physical world. We win emotionally. We win physically. Pure and simple we win.

The point here is youve got to recognize that a lot of what youre going through is the direct result of coming under attack and not because of some great flaw within you. Success or better yet victory, necessitates controlling the mind game. When you put on the armor of which I speak you know this. Its like knowing that its going to rain and taking an umbrella.

But you have to pay attention to the signs of bad weather in order to be prepared. You cant be prepared for the devil properly unless you know Jesus Christ personally. He is your and my umbrella so to speak.

And please dont take my word for it. Just read the Bible. The streets are dangerous. Please be safe and aware of who you are and whos coming at you. Protect yourself.

May God bless and keep you always.

What Is Shadow Work And Why Is It Crucial To Spiritual Practice? – Patheos

Image from Pixabay

Shadow work is a term that is frequently used in various spiritual traditions, including pagan and witch communities.

But what is it really?

First lets start off with what its not.

Youll occasionally see some people state that shadow work is about getting in touch with your dark side, which sounds like its trying to turn you into a Sith Lord like Darth Vader or confront your inner mass murderer or something. Thats not it.

Nor is it about trying to turn yourself into a being of pure love, positivity, and light. If anything, that would be spiritual bypassing and a total avoidance of doing actual shadow work altogether. You shouldnt be burying negative emotions and thoughts or treating them as things to be avoided.

In addition, its not about shaming people as beings of darkness or whatever. No one is accusing you of being Anakin Skywalker. But truth be told, he and the entire Jedi Council couldve stood to have done a TON of shadow workhowever thats a whole other blog post rant.

This sounds a LOT simpler than it is. The reality is that we are all deeply flawed people with our own personal baggage. Shadow work is about confronting that personal baggage and working on unpacking, putting away, or throwing it out entirely.

Im not going to lie, its challenging and painful as hell. If you have mental health issues such as PTSD, its especially painful as you will have to deal with your triggers head on. I speak from personal experience here. However its a good way to heal from trauma and handle personal growth.

You dont need to be traumatized in order to need to do it. You just need to be human with your own baggage to unpackwhich means literally EVERYONE. Personal development is essential in all instances and areas of life.

And once again, its not about shame or blame. Its about taking on the responsibility of dealing with your issues.

It does not matter whether or not you are a Neophyte, a Third Degree, an Adeptus Minor, or even an Ipissimus. Its not even remotely relevant how many years of experience you have been involved in any spiritual tradition. Being a priest or priestess does not exempt you from needing to do it. If anything, the further you go the more of it you need to do.

You will always have baggage to unpack, issues to confront, and stuff to deal with. This is all part of being human.

Its also best that you tackle this on your own and at your own pace versus be dragged kicking and screaming if you dedicate yourself to a particular deity, especially on some level of priesthood. If you think its painful on your own, imagine a being who is Decidedly Not Human shoving you into the deep end in order to get you to the state you need to be in to be an adequate tool for the job.

This is how people break. I dont recommend it. Do the thing NOW, on your own, before you get shoved into the deep end. And if youre already in that state of being dragged there, please do yourself a favor and dont fight it. Do the work. And keep on doing it.

It doesnt even have to be a deity who could potentially drag you into doing this either. What could force you into doing shadow work could be a traumatic or life changing event. Or something drastic that clues you into something being wrong such as explosive breakups with friends and/or relationships. Any and all of these things could occur.

Being in touch with yourself is crucial. Working on your issues is super critical.

And no, it will never end. It is a lifelong process. I cant promise that it will get any easier, but I can guarantee that it is super rewarding. And while it wont get easier, things in your life WILL get easier as a result of doing it. This includes everything from your magical efficacy to your personal relationships.

Including the relationship you have with yourself, which is essential.

Its never too soon to start. As for too late? Thats when you find yourself taking your issues out on others and losing good people in your life as a result. And you dont always get second chances.

What Is Shadow Work And Why Is It Crucial To Spiritual Practice? - Patheos

John Lewis and C.T. Vivian belonged to a long tradition of religious leaders in the civil rights struggle – Alton Telegraph

Lawrence Burnley, University of Dayton

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)

Lawrence Burnley, University of Dayton

(THE CONVERSATION) With the deaths of Rep. John Lewis and the Rev. Cordy Tindell C.T. Vivian, the U.S. has lost two civil rights greats who drew upon their faith as they pushed for equality for Black Americans.

Vivian, an early adviser to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., died July 17 at the age of 95. News of his passing was followed just hours later by that of Lewis, 80, an ordained Baptist minister and towering figure in the civil rights struggle.

That both men were people of the cloth is no coincidence.

From the earliest times in U.S. history, religious leaders have led the struggle for liberation and racial justice for Black Americans. As an ordained minister and a historian, I see a common thread running from Black resistance in the earliest periods of slavery in the antebellum South, through the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s in which Lewis and Vivian played important roles and up to todays Black Lives Matter movement.

As Patrisse Cullors, a founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, says: The fight to save your life is a spiritual fight.

Spiritual calling

Vivian studied theology alongside Lewis at the American Baptist College in Nashville, Tennessee.

For both men, activism was an extension of their faith. Speaking to PBS in 2004, Lewis explained: In my estimation, the civil rights movement was a religious phenomenon. When wed go out to sit in or go out to march, I felt, and I really believe, there was a force in front of us and a force behind us, cause sometimes you didnt know what to do. You didnt know what to say, you didnt know how you were going to make it through the day or through the night. But somehow and some way, you believed you had faith that it all was going to be all right.

Fellow civil rights activists knew Vivian as the resident theologian in Kings inner circle due to how profound he is in both his political and biblical exegesis, fellow campaigner Rev. Jesse Jackson recalled.

Rejecting other world theology

Faith traditions inform the civil rights and social justice work of many Black religious leaders. They interpret religious teachings through the prism of the injustice in the here and now.

Speaking of Kings influence, Lewis explained: He was not concerned about the streets of heaven and the pearly gates and the streets paved with milk and honey. He was more concerned about the streets of Montgomery and the way that Black people and poor people were being treated in Montgomery.

This focus on real-world struggles as part of the role of spiritual leaders was present in the earliest Black civil rights and anti-slavery leaders. Nat Turner, a leader in the revolt against slavery, for example, saw rebellion as the work of God, and drew upon biblical texts to inspire his actions. Likewise fellow anti-slavery campaigners Sojourner Truth and Jarena Lee rejected the otherworld theology taught to enslaved Africans by their white captors, which sought to deflect attention away from their condition in this world with promises of a better afterlife.

Incorporating religion into the Black anti-slavery movement sowed the seeds for faith being central to the struggle for racial justice. As the church historian James Washingtonobserved in 1986, the very disorientation of their slavery and the persistent impact of systemic racism and other forms of oppression provided the opportunity indeed the necessity of a new religious synthesis.

Ubuntuism

The synthesis continued into the 20th century. Religious civil rights leaders like Lewis and Vivian, clearly felt compelled to make the struggle for justice a central part of a spiritual leaders role.

In 1965, Vivian was punched in the mouth by Dallas County Sheriff Jim Clark in an incident caught on camera and carried on national news. Vivian later said: Everything I am as a minister, as an African American, as a civil rights activist and a struggler for justice for everyone came together in that moment.

Though their activism was grounded in Christianity, Lewis or Vivian both forged strategic and powerful coalitions with those outside of their faith. In some ways, they transcended theologically informed ideologies with a world view more akin to Archbishop Desmond Tutus interpretation of Ubuntu that ones own humanity is inextricably bound up with that of others.

Lewis and Vivian personified this value in their leadership styles.

George Floyd

Racial justice remains integral to Black Christian leadership in the 21st century.

After the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis, it was the Rev. Al Sharpton whose words were carried across the globe, calling on white America to get your knee off our necks at Floyds memorial service.

In recent years, the Rev. William J. Barber II has been such a vocal and powerful presence in protests that some Americans consider him to be a the successor to past civil rights greats.

In an interview in early 2020, Barber said: There is not some separation between Jesus and justice; to be Christian is to be concerned with whats going on in the world.

John Lewis and Rev. C.T. Vivian lived those words.

Blessings come from the Father through the Son – Statesboro Herald

The history of electrical power reportedly goes back at least to the 1700s. In 1879, the American inventor Thomas Edison was finally able to produce a reliable, long-lasting electric light bulb in his laboratory (www.tvakids.com/electricity/history.htm). Its significance is greater than many realize. Many of our conveniences and comforts depend on the power of electricity. One of the most common of these the incandescent light bulb is, of course, dependent on its source of power, that is, electricity.

Our thoughts today have to do with spiritual blessings found only in Jesus Christ. We are dependent on a spiritual connection with him for those blessings. Paul wrote, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.... (Ephesians 1:3).

First, we need to understand that only in Jesus Christ is there salvation from sin and its consequences. Sin separates us from God in spiritual death; but in Christ, we are reunited to him.

Scripture clearly teaches that salvation is in Christ. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2). Because the world is separated from God by sin, and men are separated from one another through sins effects, ...in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, .... by the work of Jesus on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:19; Ephesians 2:16).

Paul wrote to the Galatian Christians, ... in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ (3:26-27).

The apostle Peter, in the company of John the apostle, stood before the Jerusalem council and was questioned about why they preached about Jesus. He reply was that ...there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

Secondly, only in Jesus is spiritual peace possible in a world of physical and spiritual conflict. Those who are in a world filled sin but without Christ cannot know this peace. Men may seek it through the things of the world, simply speaking, the world cant give it, even though the world may promise it. Jesus promised, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you (John 14:27).

This spiritual peace exists in spite of circumstances. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:5-7).

Peace comes from our confidence in Gods providential care and our hope for the future. Further, Not even death can overcome our peace in Christ (Psalm 23: 4; 1 Cor 15:55).

Third, in Christ, we can enjoy a new way of life. ...if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come 2 Corinthians 5:17. The power for a new life in Christ is made possible by Gods Holy Spirit. ...we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live (Romans 8:12-13).

We began by talking about the importance of electric power. Far more important is spiritual power, available only through contact with Jesus. As with any source of power, this contact isnt theoretical. It is practical and available to all who will come to God the Father through obedience to Jesus the Son.

Allford: Achoo! Sneezing through the centuries – The Kingston Whig-Standard

Young funny handsome man with beard and mustache sneezing with spray and small drops, studio portrait on pink background. Comic, caricature, humor. illness, infection, ache. Health conceptmaster1305 / Getty Images/iStockphoto

My step-brother sneezes every time he eats chocolate. Its sort of a family game: Watch him take a bite of chocolate cake, wait two beats, and off he goes. People sneeze for all sorts of strange reasons. Some people sneeze when they think about having sex, an activity which is almost as good as devouring my step-sister-in-laws chocolate cake.

If you happen to have ACHOO Syndrome (I suspect the convenient acronym came before the name: Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helioopthalmic Outburst), you sneeze in reaction to brilliant sun or other bright lights. This photic sneezing happens to about a third of us and no one knows exactly why. It likely has something to do with an overexcitable bit in the brain that processes visual information, the visual cortex. Some researchers have posited that its a holdover from evolution.

There are others who sneeze on a full stomach. This is called snatiation, a clever combination of the words sneeze and satiation. Or, as one likely crossword-loving researcher put forth, snatiation is an acronym for (wait for it): Sneezing Noncontrollably At a Tune of Indulgence of the Appetite-a Trait Inherited and Ordained to be Named.

Why people sneeze with a full belly is a bit of a mystery but, like ACHOO, this an inheritable attribute. Imagine bringing your new flame to a family meal where instead of having a cup of tea after clearing the table, you pass around the tissues for the inevitable after-dinner sneezing fits.

Sneezing is a reflex that doesnt always start in the nose. It can start with nerve endings elsewhere in the body. Or, it could be a sign from God. Or an invitation for the Devil. It depends on who you ask.

Because you cant control it, some ancients thought a sneeze was a supernatural event and a divine omen. Back in the 8th century BC, the Greek poet Homer wrote in his little ditty, the Odyssey, that Penelope laughed when her son sneezed after she said aloud that she wished the bad guys were gone.

Elsewhere in the Odyssey, a general giving a speech is thrilled when a soldier sneezes. Thinking that this sneeze was a heavenly favorable sign from the gods, the whole army sprang to an attack, write Turkish researchers Murat Songu and Cemal Cingi in Sneeze reflex: facts and fiction. Sadly, for the general and his army, they were wiped out by the Persians. (This) can be considered as the first complication of sneezing in history, report our sneezing experts in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease.

Ancient Romans thought sneezing meant you were recovering from an illness and a toga-clad passer-by may exclaim Live long or May Jupiter bless you. The Pagans thought a sneeze expelled part of your soul and left you susceptible to Satan. The Talmud writes that having a sneeze while praying means God will really have your back in Heaven. In parts of Asia, a spontaneous sneeze means someone is talking about you (one sneeze means theyre saying nice things and two means theyre slagging you).

Sneezing started to be seen as a sign of great danger in the Middle Ages, as the Black Death ravaged Europe. In the 14th century, the pope mandated that Catholics say a short prayer after someone sneezed to protect themselves against disease. While a lovely sentiment, May God bless you, didnt do much to stop the flea-infested rats that were spreading the plague and killing people left, right and centre.

While praying never hurts, sneezing into your elbow and wearing a mask most definitely helps in the current pandemic. COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets, or as I like to call it, face spew. The coronavirus hitches a ride anytime you open your mouth whether to mutter, speak, sing, shout, curse, cough or the big kahuna, sneeze.

One forceful sneeze sends about 40,000 particles ranging in size from 0.5 to 5 mm into the air around you. The estimations concerning the speed of a sneeze range between 150 km/h and 1,045 km/h (nearly 85 per cent of the velocity of sound), report Songu and Cingi. With that force, a sneeze will cover a lot of ground, sending droplets out about 1.5 metres (our less dramatic face spew also goes a long way beware indoor, un-masked loud talkers!)

A sneeze clears the nose while also working your facial muscles, abs and even your pecs. It may play an important role in maintaining health in ways that we dont currently understand, conclude our sneezing scholars. It is rarely a sign of serious illness or impending disaster as feared by previous generations. On the other hand, it can be remarkably annoying.

Particularly in a pandemic when an otherwise innocent sneeze may cause some around you to react with terror on top of panic. Gesundheit, or good health, to all!

ESL One Cologne 2020 to be played online with new format – Dexerto

Tournament organizers ESL have announced that they will be hosting their highly anticipated 2020 ESL One Cologne CS:GO event online, following global travel restrictions.

ESL Cologne is an annual CS:GO competition that features top teams from around the world, often considered one of the biggest events of the year, outside of the Majors.

However, ESL announced, in a blog post, that they would be switching up the format for the tournament in 2020, following concerns around global travel leading up to the event.

"After a thorough evaluation weve concluded that ESL One Cologne 2020 powered by Intel will transition to an Online Tournament." the tournament organizer revealed, "The decision was made after extensive research and understanding of global travel regulations and individual national guidelines."

They also revealed that they would be splitting the event into four separate regions, Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia, allowing each of the teams to compete from home.

"The teams were determined based on a regionalized version of the original ESL One Cologne qualification rule set: via the ESL Pro Tour ranking, ESL Pro Tour Challenger events, and the ESL World Ranking."

The $500,000 prize pool has also been proportionally split into each of the regions with Asia and Oceania, who are only fielding 4 teams each, fighting for a $20,000 prize compared to the $325,000 for Europe's top 16.

ESL One Cologne which was originally expected to run from July 6-12, however, it is now scheduled to span from August 18-30 after moving to an online format.

Although the likes of Vitality, BIG, and Evil Geniuses have all been confirmed, there are still plenty of teams to be invited for each of these regional competitions, with more teams expected to receive an invite on July 20.

ESL is also playing host to the next CS:GO Major in Rio, which has been delayed until November following similar concerns regarding the ongoing health crisis.

Chasing Early Retirement? Here Are 4 Questions to Ask in Light of the Pandemic. – Barron’s

Thicha Satapitanon/Dreamstime

Text size

For Americans pursuing financial independence or planning to retire early, the coronavirus pandemic has offered perhaps the ultimate stress test. Many FIRE adherents have watched their income take a big hit. Many have seen their investment portfolios drop sharply and remain volatile even after rebounding. Many have endured both.

Now, then, would be a good time for those pursuing FIRE strategies to evaluate their plans by asking themselves four crucial questions, says Michelle Underwood Gass, a certified financial planner and founder of Paradigm Advisors in Dallas, who works closely with FIRE clients.

Do I still want to retire early?

The crisis has created an opportunity for many investors to slow down and reflect about their goals and priorities. As they spend more time at home, they may even be getting a taste of the life they imagined enjoying in retirementreaffirming plans for some but possibly causing others to rethink.

One of Gass clients, a man in his early 30s with enough savings to retire, took a voluntary three-month furlough from his high-paying job in the tech industry, and hes found that his financial plan works but full retirement is less exciting than he expected.

Newsletter Sign-up

Barrons brings retirement planning and advice to you in a weekly wrap-up of our articles about preparing for life after work.

The furlough gave him a chance to test the waters and see if this is something he really wants to do before he pulls the plug and makes it permanent, she says. Hes realizing that he doesnt want to do that for the next 50 years.

Whether or not you can give retirement a trial run like Gass client, the pandemic can help clarify the viability of your financial plan or it may help provide perspective on life and whether leaving the regular workforce early is the right move.

Are living costs manageable?

Many FIRE followers are used to cutting way back on discretionary spending, but some may not appreciate the cost of necessary expenses until their income is curtailed. Basic necessities such as rent, food, utilities, and insurance often amount to a sizable percentage of earnings even without taking an income hit.

The pandemic has been a wake-up call for many people, particularly for those whove lost a job or watched as friends and family have lost theirs. It gives them a trial ride and the chance to consider, Do I need to make bigger adjustments to my fixed costs? Gass says.

Depending on your essential expenses and personal circumstances, cutting fixed costs might mean moving to a smaller house to reduce your mortgage payment or shopping around for lower-cost insurance policies.

Is my income strategy sustainable?

Volatile markets and an economic downturn offer a good opportunity to reconsider your withdrawal plan, Gass says. The 4% rule that says how much a person can safely afford to withdraw every year of retirement has long been considered conventional wisdom, but some now say it may be too aggressive to weather the current and future downturns safely. We recommend a withdrawal rate closer to 3% to withstand the inevitable ebbs and flows of the market, she says.

The long bull market led some FIRE adherents to play down the importance of maintaining substantial cash savings. But the pandemic underscores the importance of having a deep emergency fund. At a minimum, investors should have enough to cover six to nine months of expensesand preferably more for an early retiree, Gass says. Those who have enough cash to cover them for an extended period are less likely to worry about riding out a potential long-lasting downturn. If your cash cushion isnt there yet, now is a good time to focus on building that.

Do I need to adjust my timeline?

If the economic impact of the pandemic has thrown off your financial course, it may be time to revisit whether your FIRE timeline is feasible. To ensure youre ready for early retirement, Gass says investors should keep their fixed costs low, have the security of a sizeable emergency fund, and only put long-term investable savings toward equity investments to avoid needing to sell at an inopportune time.

If those pieces arent in place, consider amending your plan. It may be prudent to re-adjust or delay planned financial freedom by a few years, she says, depending on how soon you aim to leave your day job.

Women and finance – Daily Pioneer

As more women foray into non-traditional investment avenues, finances need to be broken down and tackled according to a certain pattern. This just makes it much easier to decipher what's good for you and how you should be going ahead investing, writes Hena Mehta

Todays woman is unafraid and unabashed to seek out for what she feels she deserves. Whether it is a career choice, business idea or education option, women are finding themselves more and more at the top of their game. But what is lacking, however, is the need for women to take charge of their finances too.

While women earn and save, most women do not foray into non traditional investment avenues. Could this be lack of knowledge or lack of trust? Or both?

But even finances need to be broken down and tackled according to a certain pattern. This just makes it much easier to decipher whats good for you and how you should be going ahead investing.

The first part of this process is to educate yourself. You need to know how strategically you can save up and how this strategy can grow your money better. A Standard & Poor Survey conducted in 2015 showed that over 80% of women in India are financially illiterate. This could be due to various factors, but general lack of knowledge is one amongst them. Less than 1% of Indian women invest in the equities market. Based on our primary research at Basis covering 500 urban women ages 24-45, 70% of women have financial savings to invest, however, 60% of the total cohort is still searching for better investment avenues.

Despite the growing awareness of financial independence among women, only 33% take their own investment decisions, compared with 64% men.

Women tend to save in more traditional avenues like gold and fixed deposits, but the growing need to invest smartly with increasing inflation rates is moving women towards wanting to invest in new avenues.

Educate yourself

Taking charge of your finances cannot be an overnight exercise. There is always a learning curve involved. Become financially literate so that you are capable of handling your finances. Read regularly to understand various investment avenues follow a few financial blogs, perhaps even take a financial management course. A good place to start is the learning modules on the Basis app.

Expense management

You know how much you make but do you know how much you are saving? Get involved in your expense management discuss these with your spouse or parent. Take a hard look at your expenses. You may find unnecessary and avoidable costs, which you might realise by paying closer attention. Once you know how much you have every month to invest, you can allocate investments accordingly.

Access, assess and analyse

To know where you have to reach the first step is to understand where you currently stand.

Access: From net banking IDs to Demat IDs and passwords, list down all the places your money is currently invested. It can be across banks, across Demat accounts, and even across Asset Management Companies (AMCs). Vault all your IDs and passwords securely, tools for this very purpose are also available now.

Assess: If your parents or spouse have this organised, its a plus. But if not, then get down to assessing your portfolio. Call in for bank statements for account balances and deposit balances.

Analyse: Analyse your current portfolio. Categorise your investments and ask yourself these questions do you have diversified investments? Or do you have several overlapping investments in similar instruments?

Goal Setting

Identify your financial goals. If you are married, discuss common goals with your spouse buying a car, a house, funding for childrens education, and retirement, to name a few. But also make sure to incorporate your personal goals travel, further education, or maybe even planning for a sabbatical or other personal aspirations. Map these with your existing investments.

Invest for your goals

Goal mapping is the crucial step to chalk out a financial roadmap, which may involve rebalancing your portfolio. Do not hesitate to consult a financial planner if you find yourself getting overwhelmed. Once you have a financial roadmap in place, set up your investments, including any standing instructions to your bank or mutual fund house.

Revisit

Investments, especially long-term ones, are something we should keep track of with a knowledge-based approach rather than sentiment-driven actions, but you must not lose sight of your finances. Be current with your knowledge of the market scenario to take advantage of any lucrative investment opportunities. Any change in income, significant expenses, or goals should also be incorporated in your financial roadmap.

Earning money is one part, but managing your earned money is what can make you truly financially empowered and independent. So, ladies, roll up your sleeves and gear up to take charge of your finances!

Policies that affect you

Once you know about how to go about savings, you need to know about the laws that affect you. This means staying on top of policies and regulation around taxation and investing.

Tax Regime: One way your money could be affected was through the governments proposal to introduce a new optional tax regime without exemptions and deductions. This will adversely affect the savings in India. In the 2020-21 Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided an option to personal income tax payers to remain in either the existing tax scheme with exemptions and deductions or opt for a new simplified tax regime with lower tax rates but without exemptions and deductions.

What this means is that, you could either choose to save and invest as you had been doing before, or move to a flat structure that doesnt entail your Rs 15 lakh deduction under 80C, but in turn, you get to pay a lower tax bracket.

Under the new tax proposal, people with an annual income of up to Rs 2.5 lakh will not have to pay any tax. For income brackets between Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, the tax rate is 5 per cent.

Further, those with an income of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh will have to pay a reduced tax rate of 10 per cent; between Rs 7.5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh 15 per cent; between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 12.5 lakh 20 per cent; between Rs 12.5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh 25 per cent; and above Rs 15 lakh 30 per cent.

Government SOPs

We all know that the current situation has been difficult for all of us. With this, also came a few financial changes and the government. SoPs that affect your money. Knowing about the latest government facilities available, can help you plan and execute your savings better.

The Income tax filing deadline: The income tax filing deadline which was earlier July 31st, 2020 had been postponed to November 30th, 2020 .

FDs and PPF: PPF rates have been cut from 7.9% to 7.1%. FD rates have fallen to 5.5% too. The interest gained on these is likely to be negligible with rates expected to fall further. This is most likely to affect senior citizens who depend on these schemes. We recommend taking another look at your portfolio and investing in mutual funds.

EMI Moratorium: All term loans home loans, personal loans, education loans etc, including credit card payees, can avail a three month deferment starting March 2020. For those under financial duress, this can help relieve some pressure. However, if you can afford to continue paying them, please do so to avoid the interest piling up cumulatively. Remember that the moratorium does not apply to the interest on your loans.

EPF Contribution: According to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Package, the EPF contribution requirement has been reduced to 10% of your basic and dearness allowance as opposed to 12% for three months starting May. It simply means an increase in your in-hand salary. Do note that this increase is now taxable. If you want to continue contributing your 12%, you could do so but your employer will be contributing as per the new directive.

TCS & TDS Reduction: There has been a 25% reduction in both TDS and TCS applicable till March 31st March 2021. For a lot of non salaried individuals, this move helps increase spending power substantially. If you want to avail this service, you will be asked to furnish your Aadhar and PAN card details when you raise an invoice.

Select Government Schemes for Women Entrepreneurs

Several financial institutions have introduced schemes to power the woman entrepreneur. Ive highlighted a couple of them here:

Stree Shakti Package For Women Entrepreneurs: This scheme, run by SBI, is for women who own the majority of a small business (>50%), and whose business is registered with the Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDP). The scheme allows a concession of 0.05 per cent on the interest on loans that are greater than Rs 2 lakh.

Mahila Udyam Nidhi Scheme: If youre a woman looking to set up a small venture, this scheme offered by Punjab National Bank and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) can give you a loan of Rs 10 lakh for 10 years, with a 5 year moratorium. Interest rates depend on market rates.

In Conclusion

Historically, men have been the owners of wealth, and by extension, the financial decision-makers. However, gender roles are becoming outdated, including roles related to money.

As women, we live longer than men, face the gender pay gap at work and have higher healthcare costs and hence need to prudently plan and understand our finances. The good news is that the desire to become financially independent is strong.

The real question is whether this financially independent woman has the resources to manage her money wisely. Lets roll up our sleeves, unite and take charge of our financial destinies.

3 ways in which technology has simplified life & made investments easier – Moneycontrol.com

Rahul Jain

For those who closely monitor stock markets with a keen eye for opportunities, COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown presented a unique challenge.

How does one keep track of ongoing market developments amidst uncertainty and volatility to spot that one opportunity to capitalise?

The current market environment has led to several fundamentally-sound stocks being available at a valuation that is minuscule, as compared to pre-COVID levels.

Being able to leverage such prospects at a moments notice, is valuable. And this is where technology has simplified investing, making it easy to invest through a few taps on your mobile phone or laptop.

At a time when social distancing is becoming the norm, digital the new buzzword, for savvy investors who seek to evolve to adapt.

Technology: A Great Enabler During Challenging Times

The crisis engulfing us now is vastly different from anything that we have witnessed in the past. What started as a health crisis, quickly escalated to spillover to other realms having a direct connection with our finances and financial well-being.

This warranted the adoption of a tactical approach that would allow us to keep our investments safe and simultaneously, also stay on the path to financial independence.

While the Government and various authorities do their best to counter the virus, technology is fast emerging as the much-needed knight-in-shining-armour that is enabling investing sans disruption.

Investors can now, invest from the comforts of their home across a spectrum of asset classes including stocks, mutual funds, and fixed deposits among others.

Be it making a fresh investment, adding to an existing one or completing mandatory KYC formalities, technology is at the forefront of making all of this safe and possible.

There are multiple apps available to facilitate seamless transactions speedily, without needing to physically visit your banks, etc. The fluidity and ease available with technology, has bolstered its adoption pan India.

In fact, thefintech adoption rate in India has increased considerably, standing at 87% [1] in 2019 as compared to 52% [2] in 2017.

Comprehensive and Detailed Instructions

During testing times, maintaining a calm and disciplined approach is easier said than done. There are a lot of questions doing rounds. How Has The Pandemic Affected Women More Dangerously? – Inventiva

2020 has been a fateful year for all till now. Apart from the enormous health hazard, COVID-19 has also stagnated our economy. The worst-hit are the young start-ups and their entrepreneurs. If these effects are further magnified, women entrepreneurs are the bearers of this burning jungle. COVID has had far-reaching, economical, social and psychological impacts on women than men. Whereas the campaigns like Share the Load on the popular ring today but how many people share the load is still a daunting question. The traditional Indian society attributes women to be goddesses and thus expect them to multitask. This period is when she is proving to be a goddess with Asht Bhuja with endless housework and official tasks. A survey conducted by Cherie Blair Foundation for Women has shown that 97% of women have had their businesses negatively impacted or believe that their business is likely to suffer huge losses because of COVID-19. This is the time when women entrepreneurs need the most help, guidance and mentorship that ever.

Traditional Role of Women Women entrepreneurs do have several government-sponsored schemes for their benefit and expansion, but the actual pre-existing business stereotypes stand as roadblocks in their lives. The gender-based stereotype considers woman an active participant inside the household. The nationwide lockdown has increased a womans role within the confines of their house. Without a house help and endless jobs she has become even busier in her house. The 3-time meal has changed into a 5-time meal plan. In many households, she is the only one filling the void created by the absence of house helps, even though the entire family is sitting at home. She is living a dual life rendering her services to her household and her profession. In the case of homemakers, they too are working doubly hard since they must cater to the needs of family and the household.

Is she a safe bet?Women have not considered safe bets and the risk-taking ability of women are always under purview. As the situation is persisting more women are being laid off by their corporations and are forced to do unpaid labour. A woman has to juggle between her job and her house that she is never considered at par with man. Employers maintain that the attention of female employees is always divided between her family and work. She would not be able to work whole-heatedly for the organization.

Economic Setback Since more and more women were pushed indoors because of the major layoffs in the pandemic, the economy of women has seen a drastic fall if compared to the mainstream economy. Many women have lost their financial independence and are drawn to care work. Small scale businesses run by women are either on the brink of closure or have stagnated. The women who were involved in the culinary industry have faced the worst of the pandemic as their entire industry has crumpled.

Psychological drain in womenWith such difficulties already in her hand, a woman is psychologically drained. In such tiring circumstances, it is obvious that she will exhibit irritable behaviour. It is more likely that she will be a victim of anxiety and depression. The effects of the pandemic are far-fetched on women, not only they are bound to get anxiety and depression but also feeling of worthlessness might sink in mind like never. Financially independent women might get a shock of losing their jobs and replacing their house helps at home. The lockdown has been a mirror for everyone when it comes to mental health but for women, this has resulted in more grievous results.

Crimes against women in PandemicIt would be wrong to say that crimes against women have risen after the pandemic. Cases of domestic violence have increased manifold. The cases of divorce have also risen in recent months. But above all silent crimes against women have seen a surge in past some time. It was not long ago when a video of an old man trying to rape a little girl has garnered much interest in the social world. Sexual violence and exploitation have increased by a large number. Many silent voices were curbed because of the pandemic and most importantly, the lockdown.

The Pandemic has struck the entire world without a doubt but with a special reference to women, the pandemic has become an unbearable time. The work of women has increased which is making them vulnerable to many social and psychological factors. However, as a society, the responsibility of assimilating equality is bestowed upon all living organisms. The basic goal of equality will almost take 237 years to be fulfilled according to some researchers. However, sharing the load and starting to care shouldnt just remain phrases but actual practice.

What is nanomedicine? | ETPN

The potential of Nanomedicine: why is small different?

Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology to achieve innovation in healthcare. It uses the properties developed by a material at its nanometric scale 10-9 m which often differ in terms of physics, chemistry or biology from the same material at a bigger scale.

Moreover, the nanometric size is also the scale of many biological mechanisms in the human body allowing nanoparticles and nanomaterials to potentially cross natural barriers to access new sites of delivery and to interact with DNA or small proteins at different levels, in blood or within organs, tissues or cells.

At the nano-scale, the surface-to-volume ratio is such that the surface properties are becoming an intrinsic parameter of the potential actions of a particle or material. Coating of the particles and functionalization of their surfaces (even on multiple levels) are in this way extremely common to increase the biocompatibility of the particle and its circulation time in the blood, as well as to ensure a highly selective binding to the desired target.

Nanomedicine has the potential to enable early detection and prevention and to drastically improve diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of many diseases including cancer but not only. Overall, Nanomedicine has nowadays hundreds of products under clinical trials, covering all major diseases including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, musculoskeletal and inflammatory. Enabling technologies in all healthcare areas, Nanomedicine is already accounting for approximatively 80 marketed products, ranging from nano-delivery and pharmaceutical to medical imaging, diagnostics and biomaterials.
