Our view: COVID blame unfounded, undermines good work in government, medicine – Press of Atlantic City

Responding to a crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic requires staying focused on what could be done differently and better, rather than assigning blame for what turned out to have been mistaken.

That is the whole basis for science developing a strong hypothesis, implementing it while watching for where its weak, and then making a new stronger proposal based on what was discovered in the attempt.

New Jersey and New York had the misfortune to be the earliest, biggest COVID-19 hotspot in America, so their elected officials and medical communities had to fight the virus with little specific understanding of how to reduce its spread or treat the illness it causes. That plus dense populations often in close quarters ensured high numbers of cases and deaths.

Much was learned that is benefiting the southern and western states where this initial wave of coronavirus now has spread and surged. The need to protect vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions is well understood. When to use ventilators, oxygen supplements and even how to position patients turned out to be different than pre-pandemic practices. All this will help reduce coronavirus mortality.

If those other states are paying sufficient attention, theyll also see that simple, honest and transparent messaging more effectively encourages people to behave in ways that slow the spread of the virus.

There is still a lot of confusion in New Jersey over what the government is ordering, advising and enforcing. This is partly a product of four months (and counting) of emergency rule by Gov. Phil Murphy, whose daily pronouncements are complicated, changeable and incomplete.

The latest, for example, is two-week quarantines for travelers to New Jersey from (as of Tuesday) 22 states experiencing growing COVID case-loads (but still a fraction of New Jerseys peak). Thats obviously not enforceable, so its an advisory one made knowing that few will follow it. If the real purpose was to remind people that other places might now pose more risk of contagion than New Jersey and to act accordingly, saying that clearly would have been better.

Even the esteemed infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has learned the hard way that honesty and clarity work better. At the end of April he tweeted that masks were not effective in preventing COVID-19 in the general public, adding, Seriously people stop buying masks! He wanted to prevent people from snapping up the virus-blocking N-95 masks that medical personnel needed and had trouble getting. Later it turned out the virus mainly spreads by droplets that can be reduced by people wearing regular cloth masks, so he strongly urged their use indoors and in close proximity. Some trust and effectiveness was lost.

For the rest of this year everyone will be figuring out how to live and work with a contagious virus that can only be slowed, not stopped. Mistakes will be made and much more will be learned.

Everyone has done a generally good job. Everyone is getting better at this. The goal of keeping health and economic destruction to reasonably tolerable levels looks doable.

There is no basis for trying to blame COVID deaths on governmental or health officials for decisions made with insufficient information and often under pressure and time constraints. The eventual coronavirus spread, development of vaccines, almost certain mutation of the virus and ultimate death rates and economic slump wont be known or even reliably estimated for months, maybe years.

Officials are trying their best to balance the publics conflicting desires for a little less disease and a little more normal life completely legitimate but competing and even conflicting desires. Dont blame them. Let them focus on doing their best in their challenging work.

And people shouldnt blame themselves if their actions result in a less than optimal health or personal finance outcome in this historic global crisis. So much is beyond their control.

Lets try see what could have been done better and resolve to do better going forward. Then look ahead for what else can be improved. The path out of the pandemic and economic slump is in that direction.

Our view: COVID blame unfounded, undermines good work in government, medicine - Press of Atlantic City

AIDS taught us a lesson: Information can save more lives than medicine | TheHill – The Hill

Nearly 40 years have passed since the global health community first took aim against a mysterious new disease with no treatment and no cure. The disease was called AIDS, and the lessons we learned in our fight to bring it under control came at a very high price. Thats why Im alarmed and dismayed to see those lessons being cast aside right now in the U.S.

Im an infectious disease physician and epidemiologist who has been fighting epidemics for nearly 50 years. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, I was assigned by the World Health Organization to work with Uganda, where at the time approximately 30 percent of the population was infected with a disease that was 100 percent lethal. Everyone there knew dozens of people who had died or were dying and the disease just kept spreading.

Like COVID-19, AIDS at that time was a new ailment that was poorly understood. Like COVID-19, there was no cure and no effective treatment. We studied it, we stumbled, we fought, and we made mistakes in our effort to save lives. Eventually, we finally learned the hard way what worked. By the time my team left, new transmissions had fallen by 85 percent.

We succeeded by using the only weapon left in our arsenal, which is the same one we are fumbling with in the U.S. right now strong, effective and honest communication.

When AIDS arrived, most Ugandans understandably did not grasp the concept of invisible transmission or prevention of a new disease, no matter how we tried to frame it. Changing sexual behavior, which is arguably one of the most difficult behaviors to modify, was nearly impossible. In parallel to what we now see across the U.S. media, misinformation and finger-pointing led to widespread confusion and discord.

The solution? Constant, non-stop messaging, delivered at the community level by trusted community members about how the disease was transmitted and how it was not, combined with support in making the changes needed. With time, Ugandans absorbed the correct knowledge and shared it with one another. Millions of lives were saved.

We are now faced with COVID-19, another new disease that still has no effective treatment, cure, or vaccine. But this time, we do know what to do. And we are failing miserably.

The hard truth is that, like Uganda in the 1980s, our society still does not fully understand or trust the information on COVID-19 transmission and proper preventive behavior. We are confused by conflicting reports and non-intuitive information: Has the wave passed? Has it come back? Is it really in the air? How can I get it from someone who looks perfectly healthy? Can they live in clothes? Did I get it already? What is safe? Is it treatable with medication? Is it even real?

The conflicting and confusing messages have led us to where we are now at risk of a severe uptick in mortality as the country begins to reopen. We simply dont, as a population, understand the virus and its transmission well enough to be making policy decisions under social pressure caused by inaccurate or misleading information. Doing so could lead to far more severe economic and health consequences now and in the future.

Right now the only thing keeping COVID-19 from infecting the entire country is the personal behavior of individuals. That behavior is affected by all the noise, fear, blame and anger that characterizes the public debate on COVID-19.

We will only stop this disease once and for all when we get everyone to understand why wearing a mask is not a political statement, why keeping your distance has nothing to do with freedom, and why reporting symptoms is of critical importance to the country we all love. If we focus on these basics, everything else will follow.

But the challenges were currently facing on this front remind us that when it comes to information sharing, we dont live in one America. There are tens of thousands of Americans, each with their own locally trusted information sources. Different communities get information in different ways, and we are fooling ourselves if we think everyone is absorbing the messages put out by what we call mainstream media.

We need to do a better job of delivering the truth to our citizens all of them. We need to be reaching out on an individual level in some cases, to deliver information that just wont get through otherwise.

My organization works with under-resourced communities, and we are doing everything in our power to deliver information to them through trusted messengers. That can be by text message, by Facebook, even by shouting across a sidewalk.

We all have a responsibility to transmit trusted information, such as CDC and WHO guidelines, to those in our social and family circles. We cannot afford to keep quiet. We cannot afford to let people die for lack of information.

AIDS taught us that complacency kills. AIDS taught us that transmission can worsen when messaging fails to adapt to society and people begin to minimize the risks. I fear that is happening to us right now.

Opening up as soon as possible should not be our goal line. The goal has to be the stopping of transmission and to do that, we all need to be playing on the same team. That means all of us, and especially the government and public health officials, need to be honest and truthful about what we are dealing with. For all of us, the time has come to stop arguing and start communicating.

Gary Slutkin, M.D., is an epidemiologist, an innovator in violence reduction, and the founder and executive director of Cure Violence. He previously served as medical director for the San Francisco Health Department Tuberculosis Program and worked for the World Health Organization reversing epidemics, including Ugandas AIDS program, the only country to have reversed its AIDS epidemic.

Was lockdown the right call? – Medicine Hat News

By GILLIAN SLADE on July 18, 2020.

gslade@medicinehatnews.com

Five months into the COVID-19 pandemic it is clear that there are other health issues killing more Albertans annually and they did not require the extraordinary lockdown that has affected the economy.

Drew Barnes, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat says he understands the need for the lockdown to protect everyone in the early stages, but within a few weeks it was obvious that it was not as bad as anticipated.

At about the three-week mark it was clear that the models were wildly exaggerated with both the number of people that were going to catch the virus and how lethal the virus was, said Barnes.

At that point Alberta should have started opening up the economy to limit the impact, said Barnes. That would also have been the time to identify particularly vulnerable sectors, either because of their working conditions or higher density living conditions, and focus attention on protective measures there.

We hit this thing with a hammer and now we have no idea what the total family and mental health costs will be, said Barnes.

In 2016 there were 273 traffic fatalities in Alberta, 55 deaths from influenza, 1664 deaths from organic dementia, 1626 from ischemic heart disease and 1547 from certain malignancies. So far there have been about 165 deaths from COVID-19. (The year 2016 was used only because it is one where data was available across the board.)

Jim Groom, political science instructor at Medicine Hat College, says it will likely take 10 years for the economy to recover.

Groom added the modest COVID-19 death rate here, compared to Sweden where a lockdown was not in place, is an indication that Alberta took the appropriate course of action.

Personally I feel that weve been somewhat successful., said Groom.

If Alberta had not taken extraordinary precautions, the COVID-19 situation here would likely be very different, said Groom.

If we are not sure that the extreme measures were necessary we only have to look at the U.S. currently, he says.

It looks like its out of control and theyre not going to be able to bring it back under control, said Groom.

There is no doubt Albertas economy has suffered because of the measures we took.

As a society, because we have a social safety net, I think the federal government has filled that gap quite a bit.

One of the big factors in the recovery will be whether schools open in September and whether kids can return to classes five days a week. Groom says without this parents are still in a difficult position about returning to work.

Thats going to make it or break it economically, or a more delayed recovery, said Groom.

The provincial government is expected to make an announcement at the beginning of August about schools reopening and how that will be handled.

Even businesses that have now reopened are generally finding things slow and a walk through Medicine Hat Mall is an indication that not many people are interested in spending money even those who have not been impacted financially by COVID.

Barnes believes the government could help. Early in the lockdown Albertans listened to, believed and obeyed instructions from government officials. In some cases that instilled fear which is still lingering. The government now needs to lift some of that fear and encourage people to support the economy, said Barnes.

Was lockdown the right call? - Medicine Hat News

Eisenbarth shares the Walking the Flats tour of Medicine Hat – Prairie Post

Medicine Hat artist Theresa Eisenbarth intelligently and concisely verbally expresses her feelings on a number of subjects such as the love for her city and her downtown neighbourhood in the Flats area.

She wishes the area would get more respect and would love to see street side markets pop up there like in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto.

She is also able to convey that in her acrylic paintings as she has an exhibition currently showing at the Esplanade. She never started painting in acrylic until eight years when she started her own company called Eisenbarth Art Studio (she does teaching and lectures) and it wasnt only up until no more than 1.5 to 2 years ago she wanted about painting neighbourhoods. She had painted a lot of Medicine Hat and other areas but she wanted to zone in on a theme.

I thought, you know what, I love these walks growing up in these neighbourhoods and to me those are where immigrant families settled, those are blue collar workers, they worked at factories, they worked at MedAlta, the worked at Ogilvie (Flour) Mill, we used to have a meat packing place in the Flats at one time all of those people settled there. Its not just something that is Medicine Hat, its every city in the western provinces, explained Eisenbarth.

She has taken thousands of photos and she said she narrowed down those photos and then turned them into paintings. Painting is now her full time job doing up to 60 pieces a year, some commissioned, some for herself.

One doesnt walk into the Esplanade and just inform management they are going to have an exhibition for them. Artists have to make a proposal (http://esplanade.ca/artist-proposals/) to have it worthy to show. With the pandemic it has turned into a lot of work just to get set up and be on display but it has been worth it.

She has worked very hard and diligently learning her craft and the result is some amazing work, much of which have eye-pleasing, vibrant real colours that really come off the canvas both up close and from a distance. One doesnt have to live in Medicine Hat to under or appreciate the work.

While the Walking the Flats is a tour of a classic character and longtime Medicine Hat neighbourhood, people from outside the city can relate to it and enjoy her brilliance of what she conveys on canvass. Some of the area also includes natural areas such as in Strathcona Park, Lions Park gates and the South Saskatchewan River. She does commission work and this includes non-structural urban areas. Some of her work includes the Forgotten Sunflower; Pair of Trees on the Ridge and a lovely depiction of Horseshoe Canyon in Elkwater.

Besides at the Esplanade, she has paintings at the Rothwell Gallery in Ottawa. Her next project she would love to do is to go to Regina and do a similar exhibition there.

Those wanting to see the exhibition in person at the Esplanade will have to hurry as the exhibition is only around until Aug. 15.

Those who prefer to visit her exhibition through a virtual gallery can go to:

http://esplanade.ca/artgallery/art-gallery-current-and-upcoming/2020/06/theresa-eisenbarth-walking-the-flats/

Those who want to get the ultimate Walking the Flats Tour can actually do a real walking the flats tour with an evening walk night set for Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Tour will start at the corner of Dominion St. And Minto Ave.

(Note: we will have a more in-depth feature on Eisenbarth in a future issue of Prairie Post.)

COVID-19 Impact: Nuclear Medicine/Radiopharmaceutic Market | Strategic Industry Evolutionary Analysis Focus on Leading Key Players and Revenue Growth...

Teenager was a victim of ‘Russian roulette,’ which he was playing with four others, authorities say – Winston-Salem Journal

A teenager who was found shot to death in an abandoned vehicle was playing Russian roulette with four other people when he was shot, authorities said Friday.

Kalil Nathaniel Rice, 19, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound to his head early Monday in Winston-Salem, police said. Rices body was found shortly after 2 a.m. in an abandoned Kia Sorento in the 1800 block of Gray Avenue.

Investigators have been told that Rice fatally injured himself after one of five people in the vehicle suggested that they play the lethal game, police said.

Russian roulette is a deadly game of chance in which a person spins the cylinder of a revolver holding only one bullet, aims the gun at his or her head, and pulls the trigger.

Detectives are aware that this highly dangerous game is supposed to involve the use of a revolver, Winston-Salem police said. And that the use of a loaded semi-automatic handgun would always result in injury or death to the games participant.

It appears that the people involved in this case didnt realize playing Russian roulette with a semi-automatic handgun would result in someone getting shot, police Capt. Steven Tollie said.

Unfortunately, its trying to make sense out of a nonsensical situation, he said.

Investigators are working with the Forsyth County Medicals Examiner Office to determine if the fatal injury is consistent with being self-inflicted, police said.

The investigation has led to the arrests of Keivaunaugh Cearon Sanders, 19, of Locust Street, and James Michael King Jr., 18, of Lamont Street, both of Winston-Salem, police said.

Detectives say that on July 10, the Kia Sorento was reported stolen from a local dealership. That vehicle was likely stolen on July 3 or July 4.

When Sanders was arrested, officers seized a semi-automatic handgun, police said. That gun was reported stolen on July 12 as part of reported auto break-in.

Investigators allege that King, Sanders and two other people were inside the vehicle when Rice suffered his fatal injury.

King is accused of stealing two vehicles from Parkway Ford of Winston-Salem on July 1, and the 2007 Kia Sorento from Bob King Kia of Winston-Salem on July 10, police said, police said.

On Friday, he was served an outstanding arrest warrant for interference with an electronic monitoring device and charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, two counts of felony larceny and felony possession of a stolen vehicle, police said. King is accused of removing an electronic device that he wore as a condition of probation, police said. King had been convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering earlier.

Sanders was charged Tuesday with concealment of death, possession of a firearm by a felon, both felonies, and misdemeanor breaking and entering on unrelated matter, police said.

Sanders is accused of removing the gun Rice apparently used to shoot himself, another arrest warrant said. He is also accused of possessing a 9 mm handgun even though he has a felony conviction on his record, according to an arrest warrant. It is illegal in North Carolina for most anyone convicted of a felony to own or possess a firearm.

In May 2018, Sanders pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen motor vehicle and was sentenced to his time served in jail awaiting his court hearing. A judge put him on probation for two years, the warrant said.

Sanders also is accused of breaking into an Anson Street apartment on Monday to seek shelter, according to another warrant. Detectives arrested Sanders on Monday in the 700 block of Anson Street, police said.

Well, he definitely hasnt forgotten it. He reminds her of the rumors she spread and the police report filed against him. Eric, are you sure you want to deal with this drama again? She literally filed a police report because someone texts her saying she has a cheesy butt. If that doesnt have insane written all over it, I dont know what does. These two can have one another. As crazy as Larissa is, there is something odd about Eric as well.

Debbie Johnson and Colt are on their way to Brazil to meet Jess Caroline and her family. Debbie is worried about traveling abroad for the first time. Despite her fears, she isnt going to let anything get in the way of ensuring Jess isnt taking advantage of her man child. When Colt and Debbie arrive, she instantly becomes the third wheel. I dont know why Jess continues to mention sex every second. Who talks about that when they first meet someones mother?

Debbie, never one to let anything get past her, believes Jess may be trying to get pregnant on purpose. Things get even weirder when the two start exhibiting some serious PDA. Mama Colt becomes ill just watching them. Well, she isnt alone; even I had to resist the urge to vomit. I dont know why we have to be hit over the head with Colts sexual exploits every episode.

Once they arrive at the hotel, Debbie is completely shocked. She realizes that Colt has only booked one room for everyone. Im sorry, but I cant help but laugh. Although its a two closet bedroom suite, there is only a thin sliding door between them. What the hell was Colt thinking? Debbie claims she is tired, but its obvious she really is upset she will have to listen to those two having sex.

This trip is going to be quite interesting. When I say interesting, I mean horrible. If I were Debbie, I would have gone right back downstairs and got another room. There would have been no way in hell, I would be forced to endure those two having sex like rabid animals within earshot. Debbie is so angry. She yells at Jess and slams the door. Well, Id say the trip is off to a great start so far.

Its another day and another reason for Tania Maduro to nag her husband. Despite Syngin Colchester trying his best to make his injured wife happy, its still not enough. While out with a friend, Tania expresses her disappointment in her husbands drinking. She cites him recently having a drink after failing to get a job as another example. She fails to mention the interview was at a bar and the owner offered him a few free drinks. I think most people would have indulged in a drink based on those circumstances. Maybe there is something that we havent seen, but Syngin only seemed mildly tipsy that night. Listening to her, you would think he was a raging drunk.

Syngin takes Tania to dinner in an attempt to ease some of their tension. Almost immediately, she begins berating him. He then expresses his hesitation in living in America permanently. Sigh! What the hell did these two talk about before they got married? Apparently, it wasnt a home, what country to reside in or whether they were soul mates. I would think a couple in a long-distance relationship would have had many conversations about their future.

Its instant karma watching Tania squirm while Syngin explains his hesitation about their relationship. I guess she wants to be the only one to express her discontent. Girl, you better get it together before you lose your man and all those life plans you keep creating alone.

Kalani Faagata and Asuelu Pulaa are in California to celebrate their sons birthday. Its only been a day and the trip has already fallen apart. Shortly after arriving, Asuelu packed his things and left. He didnt return until later that night and has since locked himself in his room. Kalanis family is disturbed by Asuelus actions.

Her father can barely hold himself back after hearing his wife and daughters version of events. This is part of the problem. Kalani needs to stop telling her family every issue she has with her husband. At this point, Asuelu feels like he is alone while hiswife has everyones support. Now dont get me wrong, he is completely out of line for his comments about Kalani and her family duties being easy. But no man wants to feel like he has no real input in his marriage and family.

As people arrive for the party, Kalani has to explain why Asuelu is absent. She attempts to once again get him to emerge from the room with no luck. Kalanis father gives Asuelu a lecture about excluding himself from his own sons party. In a confessional interview, her father threatens to lay hands on him the next time.

Finally Asuelu comes outside and attempts to put on a good face for the sake of his son. After the party, Kalani expects an apology, but doesnt receive one. Clearly, he just wants to sweep their argument under the rug. I hope Asuelu grows up, before he loses his family. Regardless I cant feel too bad for Kalani. He acted like a preteen, before she chose to marry him. What did she expect?

Angela is on her way to Nigeria to finally get married to the love of her life, Michael Ilesanmi. I still think he is much too nice for the likes of her, but he is an adult. If he wants to ruin his life, who am I, to stand in the way. Angelas departure is bittersweet. She is experiencing guilt leaving behind her sick mother, but is excited to finally tie the knot.

Angela arrives to warm welcome from her fianc, Michael. This time they have rented an apartment to experience living together. When they first arrive, Angela demands a softer bed, but likes the rest of the apartment. That is until she discovers their other roommate, the rat lying on the kitchen floor.

Even Michael didnt want to pick up that huge rat to dispose of it. A soft bed may the least of her worries, if they continue to have visitors.

Its Elizabeth Potthast Castravets first full day in Moldova and there are already several issues. First, there is a language barrier and her husband is barely translating. As if that wasnt bad enough, Andrei Castravet dares to insult her as a mother and a wife. Apparently, since she isnt a traditional Moldovan wife she is lazy. This time she decided to give him a taste of her own medicine.

She reminds him that she is the breadwinner in their family and he doesnt have a job. That had to burn. Its the truth that always stings the worst. Ironically, he is extremely offended and tells her she is lucky his parents didnt understand her. Umm what? Andrei is the epitome of a chauvinist pig. He has the nerve to judge his wife, but continues to live off of her family. Insert side eye.

Andrei takes Elizabeth out for a fun night out with his friends. This should be interesting. When she asks him to include her into the groups conversation, he accuses her of being a feminist. I guess wanting to be included in a conversation is now called feminism. I would suspect most of the world would be considered a feminist, if we rely on Andreis definition.

Elizabeth believes his alpha male trait is in overdrive now that he is back in his home country. The night takes a surprising twist as it progresses. His friends are stunned that Andrei isnt working outside of the home. He quickly explains his situation as the norm in America. Huh? Sorry sir, that isnt the norm for the type of man you pretend to be on a daily basis.

Not surprisingly, Karine is disappointed in Paul Staehle and his efforts, since they have been in America. She even refuses to attend dinner with him and her mother in- law. When Paul arrives solo, his mother says I wouldnt have come if I knew Karine wasnt coming. LMAO! This woman really doesnt want to be bothered with her own son. Who can blame her, Paul would drive anyone insane. After being free from him the past couple of years, why would she turn back now? He is a user and extremely disrespectful to his mother. Despite Pauls attempts to use his baby as the reason he needs help, she still refuses him. She reminds him that as a grown man he should make better decisions and plan ahead.

The next stop on Pauls tour of America is the grocery store. As exciting as that sounds, it doesnt go well. Karine is agitated the entire time they are in the store. When Paul attempts to buy her an industrial sized box of pads on camera she almost walks out. Their next stop is house hunting. The first trailer looks like it should be condemned. I cant believe that an agent would even take a woman holding a baby into that hell hole. When they leave, Karine is so upset she screams you are not a good husband. For some reason, she believed when they came to America they would live in a nice house, despite their finances. In Pauls mind, his wife should be accustomed to meager dwellings. Karine is not having it!

TELL US- WHAT DO YOU THINK OF COLT BOOKING ONE ROOM FOR HIMSELF, DEBBIE AND JESS TO SHARE? DOES KARINE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE UPSET WITH PAUL? DO YOU THINKANDREI WAS INSULTING ELIZABETH? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ASUELUS BEHAVIOR? ARE TANIA AND SYNGIN HEADED FOR DIVORCE?

How Has Hollywood Permeated the Online Casino Industry? – LA Progressive

Hollywood is the epicenter of the worlds cinema, and it has seemingly unlimited power and influence over the industry as a whole. The Los Angeles-based movie hub has reached this mammoth stature through cross-franchise expansions over the years, and has made sure that its films have reached as many people as possible. In recent times, Hollywood has permeated the online casino industry on a huge scale. It identified this booming sector as a great place for reaching diverse demographics, and has found success in doing so.

Slot machines have been one of the most varied types of casino game for decades, but since they moved online the amount of choice when it comes to themes is astounding. Because there is so much selection, some developers have found that offering familiarity and recognizable names is a good way to attract players.

This has led slot game developers and Hollywood film studios to collaborate on numerous occasions in order to create cross-platform synergy and boost franchises. The list of blockbuster movies which have made it onto the reels is endless, and it includes high profile titles like Jurassic Park, Tomb Raider, The Incredible Hulk, and The Dark Knight.

It is clear that Hollywood branding on slots helps to boost the financial returns of a movie. Jurassic World is a prime example of this. Microgamings Jurassic Park and Jurassic World slots have been some of the most popular offerings at online casinos over the last ten years, with the former winning Digital Product of the Year at the Global Gaming Awards in 2015. With these games reaching so many people in the thriving online casino sector, it arguably attracted more viewers to the 2015 film from Colin Trevorrow which raked in $1.6 billion at the box office.

After playing a significant role in the rise of online slots, it appears as though Hollywood would also like to get its brands onto other games found at online casinos. Roulette is a game which hasnt changed much since it was invented more than two centuries ago. But the newer generations of online casino player are seeking more variance when it comes to the games. This has led to some innovations in roulette for Hollywood to capitalize on.

Just like with slots, roulette games now have themes. When gamblers log on to online casinos to play online roulette, they are faced with numerous options that go beyond the traditional wheel. One of the striking titles is Superman roulette, which borrows the theme from the long-lasting and hugely successful Hollywood film franchise. It would be reasonable to expect this game to lead to others, with rival superheroes likely to be prominent.

Hunters are part of the ecosystem – Las Vegas Sun

By David Peck, Henderson

Friday, July 17, 2020 | 2 a.m.

Hunting and fishing are the oldest and largest participation sports in America, and the most expensive. They bring billions of dollars and millions of jobs to local economies every year.

It can take years to draw a tag. Some are one per lifetime. When sportsmen arent successful, the camaraderie continues by accompanying another. They keep their skills sharp that way and more funds pour in. Billions support our state wildlife and the Department of the Interior.

Environmental awareness starts early out West. We endorse scouting, school programs, hunter safety courses and familial relationships. Wildlife managers know what animals a territory can support. They monitor disease, birth rate density, predators and even weather patterns. Revisions are constant, ecosystems fragile. We use catch-and-release on fish and hunting lotteries for game.

We could ignore all that experience and let animals overpopulate, then see them slaughtered on highways like back east.

A fly in the ointment is often the rookie that brings out a contagious pet or introduces his pet fish into our waterways. If opponents to Americas oldest sporting challenge spent more time embracing our heritage and knowledge, and joined in our efforts, perhaps we wouldnt be expending valuable resources on errant fires like our Spring Mountains just experienced. If being there is the best thing, then having been there must be the next best thing.

Industrial pollution wreaking havoc on Haripur’s ecosystem – Newspaper – DAWN.com

HARIPUR: Due to lack of implementation of relevant laws, pollution caused by factories in the Hattar Economic Zone continues to harm the ecosystem of Haripur.

The concern was voiced by district president of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Inafs labour wing and general secretary Hazara Labour federation Tahir Amin, while talking to mediapersons here on Friday.

He said over 250 functional industrial units of the estate had been wreaking havoc with the ecosystem of the district, once known for its greenery, fertile land and orchards.

He said the Environmental Protection Agency was unmoved by constant air, water and noise pollution caused by chicken feed, cement, steel, ghee, marble factories, chipboard and batteries manufacturing units.

PTI leaders flay EPAs inaction against such factories in Hattar Economic Zone

Mr Amin while referring to different studies said the smell of chicken feed factories, affluent discharged by the units and flying particles in the dust had increased different respiratory, kidney, stomach and eye diseases both among the industrial workers and the residents living in the areas falling in the five kilometres radius of the industrial estate.

He accused the officials of EPA of giving free hand to the industrialists to play with the lives of over 40,000 industrial workers and the residents of the neighbouring areas.

Tahir Amin also pointed out labour laws violations in the HEZ, saying the industrialists had formed and got registered their industrial association, but workers of the 250 industrial units were not allowed to form labour unions. As a result, he said hiring of workers through private contractors was allowed in violation of labour laws.

The PTI leader said factory workers were forced to work overtime at less than the government-fixed wages. He said the industrial relation ordinance, social security law, Employees Old Age Benefits, Workers Welfare Fund ordinance and other laws guaranteeing the rights of industrial workers were being flagrantly violated, but the officials of department concerned were the silent spectators.

He also criticised the role of management of Hattar Economic Zone formerly known as Sarhad Development Authority and accused them of turning the department into a property-dealing shop.

When contacted, deputy director labour Faizullah Khan said his department had time and again warned the industrialists of legal action if any of them were found violating the labour laws. He claimed that institution of over 120 labour laws violations during the last three months was proof that the labour department was taking all out efforts for curbing violations of the relevant laws.

He urged the workers to approach his office with complaints of labour laws violations.

None of the officials from the local EPA office was available for comments.

Safeer Akhtar Awan, senior vice-president Hattar Industrialists Association, while commenting on the situation, said the association had been calling upon the entrepreneurs to ensure respect to the laws, especially those dealing with labour rights and environmental protection.

Explained: Why annual floods are essential for the survival of Kaziranga National Park – The Indian Express

Written by Tora Agarwala, Edited by Explained Desk | Guwahati | Updated: July 19, 2020 11:43:14 am A one-horned rhinoceros along with her baby stands in floodwater inside Kaziranga National Park, in Golaghat district, Thursday, July 16, 2020. (PTI Photo)

As a fresh wave of floods ravages Assam, killing 73 and affecting nearly 40 lakh people across the state, 85 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) remains submerged. On Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the park to take stock of the situation. So far, 125 animals have been rescued and 86 have died, including rhinos, deer and wild boar, in the sixth worst flood since 1988.

Yet, the annual deluge is considered essential for the survival of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. We explain the role of floods in Kazirangas ecosystem, how increasing high floods can become a problem, and what can be done to keep it in check.

Assam is traditionally flood prone, and the 1,055 sq km KNPTR sandwiched between the Brahmaputra river and the Karbi Anglong Hills is no exception. Among experts there is a consensus that floods are necessary for Kaziranga by virtue of its ecosystem. It is a riverine ecosystem, not a solid landmass-based ecosystem, said P Sivakumar, Director, KNPTR, The system wont survive without water. The entire area of Kaziranga formed by alluvial deposits from the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is centred around the river.

According to Uttam Saikia, Honorary Wildlife Warden of Kaziranga, this floodplain eco system has not only been created by floods but also feeds off it.

The regenerative nature of floods helps replenish Kazirangas water bodies and maintain its landscape, a mix of wetlands, grasslands and semi-evergreen deciduous forests. Saikia said the floodwaters also function as a breeding ground for fish. The same fish are carried away by the receding waters into the Brahmaputra in a way, the park replenishes the rivers stock of fish too, he said.

The waters also help get rid of unwanted plants such as water hyacinth which collect in huge masses in the landscape. In a herbivore-dominated area like Kaziranga, it is important we maintain its grassland status. If it were not for the annual floods, the area would become a woodland, said Sivakumar.

Many also believe that floods are a way of natural selection. A number of animals especially the old, weak cannot survive the floods. Only the ones with superior genes survive, said Rabindra Sarma, Wildlife Research Officer at KNPTR since 1998.

Earlier, a big flood would come once in ten years, said Rathin Barman, who heads the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), which takes in injured and orphaned wild animals of the park. Now, they happen every other year, he said, adding that massive deforestation in catchment areas or release of waters by dams upstream may be contributory factors. Climate change models, too, predict that floods will become increasingly devastating with each year.

Barring 2018, the years between 2016 and 2020 have all featured high floods (or floods which submerge more than 60 per cent of the park) killing and injuring hundreds of animals.

Animals adapt naturally to floods but when the waters hit a certain level, they gravitate towards safer, higher ground in the Karbi Anglong hills.

In pictures | Lakhs displaced in Assam floods, national parks hit

While in the past, Kaziranga and Karbi Anglong were part of the same landscape, the animals now have to cross the bustling National Highway 37 which cuts across the park. Over the years, the highway is getting increasingly tough to cross. A few of the nine wildlife corridors on the highway Panbari, Haldibari, Bagori, Harmati, Kanchanjuri, Hatidandi, Deosur, Chirang and Amguri are choked by traffic, said Dr Naveen Pandey, Deputy Director and Veterinary Advisor, The Corbett Foundation, Kaziranga. Mushrooming of hotels, restaurants, shops, and ancillary structures of the tea industry has not helped either.

Editorial | Assams flood problem cannot be entirely blamed on vagaries of nature. It needs to jettison outmoded flood control measures

As a result, animals that venture out of the park, die either under the wheels of speeding vehicles on the highway, or are killed by poachers who take advantage of their vulnerability. In recent years, due to vigilant patrolling, these numbers have decreased. Those that remain in the park often young or the very old die by drowning, entangled in the debris under water as they try to swim.

According to Dr Varun Goswami, Senior Scientist at Conservation Initiatives, an Assam-based organisation that works in the Kaziranga landscape, wildlife in KNPTR have adapted to the natural flood regime by finding refuge on higher ground south of the park. If their safe passage is not ensured, major floods can cause serious losses.

This year four rhinos as well as a number of boar and deer have drowned, and 14 hog deer have died in road accidents so far. The authorities will be able to ascertain the actual number of deaths only once the waters recede.

As per Sarma, at least 25 out of 75 fringe villages on the southern periphery of the park are affected by the floods. Fleeing floodwaters, animals stray from the boundary of the park, and there is an increased interaction between humans and wildlife, at times leading to conflict. Rhino calves get separated from their mothers, tigers swim and take refuge inside homes, deer amble into villages, said Sarma. Even so, most villagers, along with the frontline staff of the forest department and other organisations such as Wildlife Trust of Indias CWRC, are part of the tough rescue operations during the floods guiding strayed animals to safer ground, treating those injured and generally keeping a strict vigil round the clock.

Preparedness begins a month before floods hit. The authorities keep a track of updates from the Central Water Commission, and monitor water levels of the Brahmaputra tributaries upstream in Arunachal Pradesh.

According to Dr Pandey, the civil administration, park authority, NGOs, and local communities work together to tackle the floods. To avoid disease outbreaks, a door-to-door vaccination is organised every year pre-floods, he said, Thereafter, camps are organised to create awareness against poaching and harming wild animals that are rendered vulnerable during the floods.

Moreover, when the floods hit, Section 144 is imposed along NH-37, speed limits are enforced and fines levied. Barricades are also placed to help animals cross over to Karbi Anglong. The efforts of the forest departments frontline staff become crucial during the season.

Over the years, another mitigation measure has been artificial highlands (111 in the Nineties, 33 in 2016-17) built inside the park for wild animals to take refuge in during the flood.

While these highlands have helped a fair bit in reducing the number of animal casualties during floods, some feel that it is not a permanent solution.

Animals do take refuge there especially rhino and swamp deer but it is not viable to build more highlands since such constructions will ruin the natural ecosystem, said Sarma, terming the highlands a temporary refuge. These 33 highlands cannot accommodate all animals of Kaziranga, and the older ones are more or less dilapidated, he said.

According to Honorary Wildlife Warden Saikia, some animals do not take to the highlands naturally. They have been migrating to natural highlands of Karbi Anglong for centuries; suddenly these artificial constructions do not inspire confidence, they do not find it secure, he said.

Experts believe that emphasis needs to be put on securing animal corridors and ensuring a safe passage to the Karbi hills.

To that end, a 35-km-long flyover constructed over NH-37 was proposed by the Centre in September 2019.

While this flyover will help, 35 km is a lengthy stretch and might take time to build, said Sivakumar, So the focus should be on doing it quickly, using modern technology that will cause minimal disturbance to the animals during construction.

In April 2019, the Supreme Court banned all types of mining and related activities along the parks southern boundary and in the entire catchment area of the rivers that originate in the Karbi Anglong hill ranges and flow into Kaziranga, as well as new construction activities in private lands on nine animal corridors.

Apart from facilitating safe and unhindered wildlife movement, Dr. Goswami of Conservation Initiatives recommends the need for a landscape-scale conservation approach that recognises the value of the Karbi Anglong hills to the south. Kaziranga, with its rich grassland habitats has a primary role to play in supporting these wildlife populations, but the highlands of Karbi Anglong, where these animals take refuge, are the lifeline of the park during the floods, he said.

Obituary: Kelly Preston, who memorably floored Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire film – HeraldScotland

Died: July 12, 2020.

WHAT was our deal when we first got together? Brutal truth - remember?, says Kelly Prestons no-nonsense character, Avery, to her fianc, played by Tom Cruise, in a key scene in Cameron Crowes 1996 film, Jerry Maguire.

Moments later, she is devastated when Maguire tells her that the relationship is over. She turns away, silently but spins around again and lays out Cruise with three rapid, hefty blows. I wont let you hurt me, Jerry, she tells him triumphantly. Im too strong for you, loser. The scene had women hollering in the cinema aisles.

Kelly Preston, who has died from breast cancer, aged 57, was best-known for her role in that film, but she also appeared in such movies as Twins (1988), with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and For Love of the Game (1999), opposite Kevin Costner.

She was born Kelly Kamalelehua Smith, in Hawaii, in 1962. The family lived for a time in Iraq and she lived in Australia before returning to Hawaii. When she was 15 she was so enthralled with the film of the year, Saturday Night Fever, that she signed up for dance lessons. She confided to her instructor, Im going to marry the man in the movie, one John Travolta. The prophecy turned out to be true.

She graduated from high school along with, her website says, a student named Barack Obama. The road to acting began as is so often the case with vividly attractive young women with her being noticed by a modelling talent scout. When I was 17, I did a chocolate commercial for Japan with the Japanese John Travolta, she later said in a magazine article, perhaps not yet entirely convinced she would one day be married to the real deal.

The modelling work paid off. It led to small parts in television such as a 1980 appearance in the police drama, Hawaii Five-O. She went on to build a reputation in films, playing sexy teenagers, such as the 1985 comedy Mischief, in which she was described by the Boston Globe as the shallow charmer the nerd dreams about. She also had the chance to reveal she was far from vacuous in films such as Space Camp, where she defied the stereotype to play a genius.

In 1998, she landed the big breakthrough role when she played Schwarzeneggers love interest in Twins. She revealed her strong sense of humour in a radio interview while talking about filming dance scenes with Schwarzenegger, who had been hitherto known only for action roles in the likes of Conan, the Barbarian. Sometimes I thought I deserved hazard pay, she said. My toes were black and blue.

Kelly Preston could certainly deal with the bruises life threw at her. She would have to have been bold to even consider becoming engaged to Charlie Sheen, an actor not known for sensibility and restraint. The relationship ended after he (allegedly) tried to shoot her in the arm.

Preston, who also dated George Clooney, married the actor Kevin Gage in 1985, but it ended in divorce two years later. She met John Travolta in 1988, when they worked on the comedy, The Experts. I saw him snaking sinuously towards me across a lobby, before fixing me with a moody stare, she said. That was it I was smitten.

So, insisted Travolta, was he. However, one report says the union may not have been entirely coincidental as both Travolta and Preston practised Scientology.

Travolta later said it had been love at first sight and he felt immediate chemistry, but the couple did not start to see each other romantically until 1990. They married in Paris in 1991, at a midnight ceremony. The relationship was one of the most enduring in Hollywood, lasting almost 29 years.

Preston and Travolta both endured the rollercoaster ride of career success. She was said to be immensely supportive of Travolta during the lean years, before the career renaissance achieved by his imagination-assaulting performance in Quentin Tarantinos 1994 hit, Pulp Fiction. Her own acting career in the Nineties was rather episodic, though she did make that memorable appearance in Jerry Maguire.

The couples 16-year-old son, Jett, died of a seizure in 2009 at the familys holiday home in the Bahamas. There was a subsequent court case after two people were accused of trying to extort millions from the couple in exchange for not publicising sensitive information about his death.

The couple later had to deal with box-office disasters they were both involved in, such as Battlefield Earth and the 2018 bio-pic, Gotti.

However, Preston, who was considered by the movement to be the more dedicated Scientologist, credited the religion with helping her positivity throughout her life. In Scientology, we have whats called auditing, and that helps you to address things in your life and to strip them away, she told one reporter. Its a path of spiritual enlightenment. Also, it helps rid the mind of painful experience completely.

Tributes to Preston came from such stars as Schwarzenegger, who said, I was lucky enough to star with her and direct her, and her talent was off the charts, and Olivia Newton-John, who said, Kelly was a radiant, warm and gentle spirit - a loving, devoted wife, mother and sweet friend. Preston, who was actively involved in education and drug reform, is survived by her husband and their children, Elle Bleu and Benjamin.

The Adventurous Lectionary The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost July 26, 2020 – Patheos

The Adventurous Lectionary July 26, 2020 Eighth Sunday after PentecostPsalm 119:129-136I Kings 3:5-12Romans 8:26-39Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52

Pentecost is the season of divine revelation and profound giftedness. Spirit moves in all things, awakening us to a democracy of inspiration. Gods abundance is strewn everywhere, for all to have, in every time and place and those who are attentive to it will experience wisdom and the ability to discern their vocation in life. They will discover gifts aplenty to serve the world. They will find, as Solomon did, personal fulfillment and from that they will bring justice and abundance to the world. Politicians and citizens alike pay heed your gifts are not your own, nor are they for a select few the wealthy and wise to enjoy. Political leaders are challenged to put communal and global wellbeing above their own political interest. Even among political leaders, our gifts our for the world. Our fulfillment is to bring beauty to the world and, accordingly, to God.

The Psalmist pleas for divine enlightenment for himself and his nation. He rejoices in the wonders of Gods wisdom and creativity. Gods light helps us to see light. Gods light inspires our ordering of the world. Gods law is just and embraces the well-being of all. All can find God, but our commitments to follow Gods law create a field of force that enables others to experience grace and the economic and physical necessities essential for spiritual growth. No one is excluded, although attentiveness enables Gods light to shine more brightly in our lives. The Psalmists affirmation invites progressive Christians to explore what it would mean to seek intimacy with God and live with a sense of wonder at Gods presence in the world. How can living by our theological visions bring beauty and justice to the world?

Gods law is not other nor does it baptize our self-interest. Rather it is the fiber of our being a theonomous reality that will bring wholeness to persons and communities if we but follow. The Psalmist would mourn our time of thin-skinned, lawless, prevaricating leaders and call to such leaders to repent and change course.

Does God give us what we want? Does God speak personally to us, inviting us to share our deepest desires and then receive our hearts desires? Does God truly reach out intimately to us, inviting us to deeper levels of faith? Awed by the task ahead of him as king, Solomon dreams of a divine visitation in which God asks the new sovereign to share his deepest desire. Solomons response is to ask God to give him an understanding and discerning heart. Rather than power or wealth, Solomon asks for wisdom, for the ability to experience Gods guidance in his leadership. Apart from divine guidance, his reign will be a failure. With divine guidance, he can go beyond his own self-interest to discern and seek the needs of the nation.

Solomons dream models our own spiritual adventures. Intentionality is central to spiritual maturity and social responsibility. Just as Charles Sheldon once asked, What would Jesus do? (In His Steps), we would do well to live in constant awareness of Gods wisdom in our lives. Divine wisdom is both long haul and moment by moment in nature. Congregants might be challenged to constantly ask for divine wisdom and understanding. Certainly, this might deliver us from the temptation to focus on our well-being rather than the well-being of the whole. Wisdom focuses on both details and the big picture, and these days we need to be delivered from thinking small and living small in terms of our communal responsibilities. We need to join individual growth with world loyalty. (For more on the ecology of healing, embracing individual and planet, see Bruce Epperly,Process Theology: Embracing Adventure with God, Process Spirituality: Practicing Holy Adventure, Praying with Process Theology: Spiritual Practices for Personal and Planetary Healing.)

Solomons dream invites congregants also to consider whether or not they can receive nocturnal messages from God, welling up from the unconscious. An ever-present God surely communicates through every aspect of our being. Can we ask for divine guidance through dreams and visions?

Solomons dream also challenges the body politic to seek wisdom and self-transcendence. Clearing the swamp is not enough if what takes its place is greed, environmental degradation, a preferential option for the wealthy, and dishonesty and egocentrism at the highest levels of government. Citizens need to pray for their leaders, but also call them to account: are you putting ideology ahead of human and non-human well-being? Is greed and consumption or winning the next election your primary value or liberty and justice for all? Is winning at any cost more important than care for the least of these? Our politicians need to be convicted and to repent of their turning from justice, substituting tweets for transformation and loyalty for compassion and justice. This is especially crucial when politicians deny science and statistics to promote their election chances.

Todays reading from Romans has at least three sermons embedded in it. First, Paul describes the inner wisdom of Gods Spirit. We dont always know whats best, but the Spirit intercedes for us in sighs too deep for words, guiding and enlightening us. The Spirit is the inner voice of God, but it is not private. Gods Spirit, as last weeks passage from Romans asserts, joins the human and non-human. Our deepest prayers have global as well as personal implications.

Similar to the Psalmists experience, God communicates beneath consciousness in preverbal ways intuitions, dreams, and inclinations as well as consciously through scripture and insight. This Spirit-centered passage reminds us that Gods wisdom trumps our own. We often dont know whats best and need to open through prayer and meditation to a greater wisdom and a higher power.

Second, and I prefer this translation, in all things God works for good to all this work together for God. This translation suggests a wide open universe, characterized by a divine-human melody of call and response. Though divine wisdom precedes our response, God does not determine all things, and yet is present in all things as the force of healing and fulfillment. There is a hint of predestination in the passage, and if we interpret this in a strong sense most of humanity is excluded, contrary to the spirit of the first half of Romans and its implicit universalism. The divine decision includes all creation and when we turn toward God, the goodness of life bursts forth in our lives. Predestination must be global to be congruent with Gods love. Predestination is not ultimately about power or exclusion and focus on power necessarily excludes those we deem as others but providential care, mated with respect for creaturely agency, that all be saved and healed.

Finally, Paul proclaims that we are more than conquers and that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Our relationship with God includes all of lifes unfixables (Alan Jones) and necessary losses (Judith Viorst). People we love die of cancer, parents and spouses grieve the loss of loved ones, and we face our own mortality. These are all part of Gods world and inevitable. Still, we can experience Gods presence and peace in the midst of all the threats of life. The peace that passes all understanding is born of a heart of wisdom that experiences Gods own wisdom embracing all of our beginnings and endings.

The gospel reading also speaks of the inner energy of God that enables seeds to grow to great plants and guides us toward surprising moments of grace. Grace gives life and nurtures. The only appropriate responses are joy, gratitude, and service.

The final section of todays gospel lesson, however, is a spiritual buzzkill there is a sense of total destruction and abandonment for those who fall away. Some will be irreparably lost. If you choose to read this, you must preach about it. Is this destruction final or is it a pruning or refining enabling us to grow spiritually? Does God turn Gods back on wayward humanity, condemning backsliders to eternal damnation for finite sinfulness? Or, is the fiery furnace a purifying crucible that peels that which stands in the way of our relationship with God, so that we and the whole earth may experience divine blessing?

Todays passages invite pastor and congregants alike to bathe themselves in Gods ubiquitous wisdom. Help is on the way and wisdom emerges sufficient for todays challenges. We dont need to depend on our political leaders for our moral compass; follow Gods vision, we have all the wisdom we need to call them to a higher morality. God speaks to us in scripture, worship, prayer and meditation, dreams, and intuition, and all encounters can become messages of God. It is up to us to listen, follow, and respond in ways that bring wholeness to the world. It may mean prayer and protest, and confrontation with injustice in quest for Gods realm.+++Bruce Epperly is a Cape Cod pastor, professor, and author of over fifty books including HOPE BEYOND PANDEMIC, FAITH IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC, and GOD ONLINE: A MYSTICS GUIDE TO THE INTERNET.

Religion and enforcement of COVID-19 protocols – Guardian

I kind of liking the role of the government officials in both Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 and that of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) levels to the secular/humanist attitude and value of the 18th century king of Prussia, Frederick the Great who lived between 1740 and 1786. Prussia used to be a monarchic sovereignty in Europe before French revolution, which successfully put an end to monarchy as a form of government. This happened when enlightenment became the paradigm for constructing society and rationality became the new normal for ordering society politically as against the pre-eminence of theology in previous centuries. Frederick as king often described his role as that of first servant of the state. To him, his subjects religions were their own affair, a matter of private conscience, and not a public matter of state. Fredericks overriding concern instead was with building an army and a stable bureaucracy, and putting in place a tax structure to fund them.

For him, his rationally organised state machine would assure the security and prosperity of his subjects. Frederick refused to see religion as an instrument he could use to mobilise the people to support policy and statecraft. He refused to see religious issues as public matter of state. He refused to see religion as instrument that could ensure unity, peace and prosperity of the state. He refused to see religion as instrument that can ensure racial and social harmony if used positively. Then, how can such a leader value and respect the sensibility of religion and religion adherents? How will he respect their feelings at all time? I have carefully followed the COVID-19 policies of this government through these officials since the pandemic birthed in Nigeria. They talked about a lot of issues like issuing regulations, which eventually stopped people from worshipping their God in church halls, mosques and shrines.

For them, religion is not a public matter of state especially at this time of pandemic. People dont have to congregate in Churches, Mosques, and Shrines to worship God. In other words, religion has become a matter of private conscience. Or religion has become a virtual experience something you follow on television, radio or online. They even advised people to gather their children in their living room on days of worship to observe the ritual of collectedness and devotion. A mock worship of sort! I am very sure they carry the same mindset to the President whenever they visit him to offer their expert advice to him. This mindset, in turn, shapes the pronouncement of the president in every broadcast he has made on the pandemic. In all, the value of religion to bring about social change and enthrone the new normal is obliterated. Little wonder, they always lament that people do not obey their regulations, and that Nigeria is daily recording community transmission and a spike in the number of covid-19 cases.

Who is to blame?Because they have watered down religion this way in a secularistic fashion, three classes of believers have emerged. The first class believe in the power idea of religion, which states that religion has the power to influence the minds of people with its message. If in mundane parlance, people believe in the power of the word, those who believe in this power idea ascribe great power to religion to influence them for social change. This means the only way to change the present indifference to COVID-19 regulations might just come through the influence of priests, pastors, imams in religious houses, church halls, mosques, and shrines. People will listen to them because the men of God control the minds of their adherents through the power of the word. Apart from this, religious leaders have proven that they have the scientific power and divine inspiration to contribute to the cure of covid-19 especially in Nigeria. Such scientific breakthrough is already in the public domain only waiting for government approval for sick people to access it.

However, the second class of believers are those who believe in the fear idea of religion. These people believe that corona virus is lurking within church premises, mosque premises, and in shrines. They believe that the virus will pounce on the people like a monster if government allows them to congregate, but they forgot that the same government allows people to congregate in markets, in buses and other public spaces. Maybe those public spaces have been effectively fumigated and sanitised while church halls, mosques, and shrines are not! Many of our government officials who pontificate every week briefing Nigerians belong to this class. They have poisoned the minds of people so much that some people have doubted that faith will remain the same never again after all this is over. To put it succinctly, will some people lose their faith as a result of this self-imposed secularistic fear? Will the ranks of the unaffiliated swell by the time all this is over? Meanwhile, some Nigerians who object to this fear idea continue to profile the proponents and their followers as suffering from fear virus.

The third class of believers are those who dismiss both power and fear ideas of religion as unproven. They are people who do not follow any religion nor trust the policy of government. Let me, however, remind Nigerians and our government officials of nations that have used religion to their advantage in history. During the Chinese-Japanese war between 1894 and 1895, the Japanese military used Shinto religion as one important element in providing public support for their expansionist policies. Again, the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) contributed to sustaining post-Apartheid South Africa. How? Even though the church provided religious justification for government policies of apartheid before late 1980s, Church officials later renounced its theological positions and apologised to those it had harmed by propagating the false interpretations of the Bible. According to them, this decision demolished the theological justification for political separation of the races and therefore helped in dismantling apartheid.

In the post-Apartheid South Africa, however, the DRC has been playing mediating role to engender racial and social harmony in the new rainbow nation. Although this new role for the church has not succeeded in eliminating all remnants of racist ideology among its former adherents, the majority of the whites who have chosen to remain in the DRC have demonstrated a genuine desire to see the fledgling multiracial society succeed. The foregoing establishes that religion cannot be isolated and expunged from life; its values can influence the actions of its adherents towards attaining a COVID-19 free society. Because people cherish their religion, it becomes a spiritual weapon for mobilising the entire nation to guard the safety and prosperity of the nation. Those who will attempt to separate the people from their religion are attempting to separate them from life, from fulfilment, and from attaining a COVID-19 free Nigeria, not the other way round.

They are doing this at their own peril and at the countrys peril as corona virus that we are trying to chase away will then remain with us for a long time.
