Analysis: why can’t fashion wash out the dark stain of modern slavery? – Drapers

Cramped sweatshops where garment workers toil in unsafe conditions for unfair wages should be a scene confined to history books. Yet the fashion industry has once again been mired in repeated allegations of modern slavery and exploitation across textile factories in Leicester in recent weeks.

It started with Boohoo Group, owner of Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing, Karen Millen, Oasis, Warehouse and Coast. Earlier this month, a report by campaign group Labour Behind the Label and an undercover investigation from The Sunday Times claimed factories producing for the ever-expanding fast fashion empire did not adhere to Covid-19 social-distancing rules, told workers to come to work even if they showed symptoms of the virus and paid workers as little as 3.50/hour.

Boohoo Group brands were temporarily delisted by wholesale partners including Asos, Next and Zalando as a result of the allegations. The group has launched an immediate and independent review of its UK supply chain, and pledged to invest 10m to eradicate malpractice.

Quiz believes one of its Leicester suppliers had used a subcontractor, which was paying staff the illegal wages

Days later, another investigation by TheSunday Times found workers producing for fellow fast fashion retailer Quiz in Leicester were being offered 3/hour to make its clothing. Quiz said it was grateful that the alleged breaches had been highlighted, suspended activity with the supplier in question pending a full investigation and committed to a full review of its auditing processes. It added that it believed one of its Leicester suppliers had used a subcontractor, which was paying staff the illegal wages.

Allegations of illegal working practices in the UKs garment-manufacturing trade are not new: similar incidences of low wages were exposed in a documentary from Channel 4s Dispatches in 2017.

If you go back at least five years, there have been concerns about the textile industry in Leicester, as well as in London and in Manchester, about a whole range of labour abuses, Dame Sara Thornton, the UKs independent anti-slavery commissioner, tells Drapers. These range from health and safety issues right through to the most serious of crimes, which include labour exploitation and modern slavery.

So why is the fashion industry still failing to tackle the issue of labour abuses and exploitation? Thornton explains that the number of different bodies involved in preventing and enforcing anti-slavery legislation complicates the issue.

There have been attempts and operations from various organisation to do something [about modern slavery]. One of the issues is that enforcement falls to lots of different organisations: local councils, HMRC, the Health and Safety Executive, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the police, the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority and the National Crime Agency. It is always very difficult to get a unified approach across lots of different organisations.

The second difficulty is that many of the victims are from overseas their English might not be very good and they might not be very confident. They may have taken low-paid work because they believe it is their best option, or weve also heard of unscrupulous employers persuading workers they are best off accepting low wages and then also claiming Universal Credit benefits. Any enforcement we do has to be about building trust and a relationship with these victims, who are also often worried about being deported because they havent got secure immigration status.

The complexity of the fashion industry can also make stamping out slavery difficult, adds Mark Sumner, lecturer in sustainability, retail andfashion at the University of Leeds, who has previously worked as a sustainability specialist at Marks & Spencer.

Fashion is an industry of industries: it is very closely connected to agriculture for the production of raw materials such as cotton, to the chemical industry for dyes and to the garment-manufacturing industry in a vast array of developed and developing nations. A garment could have been through five different countries, all with different legislation and definitions of modern slavery, before it ends up on the shop floor. With that level of complexity, it shouldnt be surprising that there are issues.

"When you sit in your office in London or Leeds or Leicester or Manchester and place your order, you might do as much as you can to manage those issues but its an uphill battle because of the complexity and opaqueness of supply chains.

Tamara Cincik, founder and CEO of lobby group Fashion Roundtable, adds: Laws around modern slavery are very difficult to enforce. Theres been a massive reduction in the number of police, which makes things more difficult. Theres also questions about how regularly garment factories are being checked by different organisations, if theyre being checked at the right times and if they are looking in the right places.

One former high street boss tells Drapers: The reason nothing has been able to be done before is because this has all been thrown toward the manufacturing side, but action on modern slavery has also got to have retailers backing, too. And the workforce has got to understand this as well. Its just such a complex issue and I think more rigorous legislation is required to ensure transparency across the supply chain and workforce.

Existing legislation is also failing to eradicate modern slavery. In addition to the mandatory National Minimum Wage, introduced in 1999, and the National Living Wage, which should prevent workers being paid illegally low wages, the Modern Slavery Act was introduced in 2015. It requires all UK businesses with an annual turnover of 36m or more to publish an annual statement setting out the steps they are taking to ensure slave labour is not being used anywhere in their supply chains or anywhere in their business.

Speaking at an evidence session for the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) for ethics and sustainability in fashion earlier this month, Mick Cheema, general manager of Leicester-based supplier Basic Premier, stressed his frustration that existing laws are not creating a level playing field.

Im trying to run a business and I should be worried about offshore competition. I shouldnt be worrying about people on our doorstep who are supplying goods at lower prices. Its an open secret and they are allowed to carry on. Why hasnt the HMRC or the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority got to the root cause?

I should be able to have discussion with retailers about price based on best practice and getting the best styles, quickly. There are laws that mean this shouldnt be happening. We should be able to fly the flag for British manufacturing proudly.

Part of the problem is that the Modern Slavery Act lacks teeth, experts tell Drapers. Although the government suggestssix areas businessescancover in their statements including due diligence processes and the parts of the business at risk there is no legal requirement to do so. There are no penalties for non-compliance and no central depository where different statements can be compared. A review into the Modern Slavery Act last year found severe deficiencies in how data is collected under the act. The Fixing Fashion report published last year by the environmental audit committee also proposed strengthening the Modern Slavery Act, but the government rejected the recommendation.

The Modern Slavery Act relies on the media, and non-governmental organisations to call out non-compliance, explains University of Leeds Sumner. When MPs ask why someone isnt doing something about modern slavery, it is because they would not allow the act to have sharper teeth. Weve also found that the act wants businesses to say: I have found issues of modern slavery and this what weve done about it. In fact, brands in clothing and in indeed any industry are reluctant to do that for fear of being lynched by the media.

Modern slavery is one of the most complicated and challenging problems facing fashion today. Drapers will be turning the spotlight on this shameful side of fashion online and in future issues.

Analysis: why can't fashion wash out the dark stain of modern slavery? - Drapers

COVID-19 is Shedding Light on the Relationship Between Bangladeshi Suppliers and the World’s Largest Apparel Brands – The Fashion Law

Over the past three decades, global inequality has reached a critical level. Multinational fashion companies have securedbillions of dollarsby moving production locations abroad and using supply chains in developing countries including Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar, where labor costs are very low. The revenues of each of the 25 biggest companies arelargerthan the GDPs of some countries. Despite this, the lives of most of the workers involved in production for many of these companies have not improved.

Many have described the conditions of garment workers in countries across the globe asmodern slavery, and their enduring plight is becoming particularly clear during the current coronavirus pandemic. According to thePenn State Center for Global Workers Rights, at least one-quarter of garment workers in Bangladesh or an estimated 1 million people have been fired or furloughed because of declining global orders amid the coronavirus crisis; many have been laid off without pay. Others, such as those in the supply chain of Boohoo Group, are reportedly being forced to work in unsafe conditions.

Over the past 15 years, Muhammad Azizul, a professor in Sustainability Accounting and Transparency at the University of Aberdeen, has been investigating corporate accountability in relation to the lives of those who work in factories that supply garments to major western companies. In conducting interviews with workers rights NGOs, social auditors appointed by multinational companies and those owning and working in garment factories in Bangladesh that supply goods to big multinational companies including Walmart, H&M, Zara, Marks & Spencer, Primark, Target, Reebok, Kmart, and Kohls, among others, Azizul and his colleaguesfound thatfor the most part, despite all the social audits, social responsibility disclosures and moral narratives that companies use, workers economic and human rights have not improved.

In fact, as Western retailers revenues continue to balloon (revenue for Walmart, for example, topped $514 billion in 2019, while Zaras parent company Inditex generated sales of $31.9 billion, up by more than $2 billion from the year prior), and factory owners inBangladesh which is home to thesecond largestgarment production market in the world after China, with the sector accounting for80 percentof the countrys total export earnings becomeultra-richas a result, the working conditions and standards of living for the individuals who labor in garments factories are seeing little improvement.

In 2018, amid international pressure in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza disaster, Bangladeshs government raised the minimum wage for garment workers. Despite such a legally-mandated raise, the new minimum wage is stillextremely low, and far below the living wage, which has prompted pro-worker NGOs and civil rights organizations to protestthe massive exploitation, slavery and human rights negligence within the garment manufacturing industry.

While the government raised wages, factory owners and industry leaders similarly protested, albeit for a different reason. Many baulk at the idea that the cost of production could become any higher. One factory owner thatAzizul interviewed, asserted in connection with the wage increase, If there is a stringent regulation that leads to costs of production being higher, multinational corporations will leave for another country where they can find cheaper products. Factories in Bangladesh are getting more offers than ever before asmultinational companiesare leaving China, as its cost of production is getting higher because of Chinese living standards. So, if somehow the cost of production becomes higher [in Bangladesh], the reality is that manufacturers will lose contracts, as there is no long-term commitment bymultinational companies.

This same factory owner reasons against any increase in production costs by indicating that profit maximization protects national economic interests. To him, more profit means more export earnings, more foreign reserves for the country, and a more stable economy. But this seems to go hand in hand with risking workers basic economic and human rights. In Bangladesh, the idea that national economic interest is at stake appears to be more of a concern than the protection of workers rights.

This is perhaps unsurprising, as the garment industry has also changed Bangladeshs political system. Businessmen are increasingly finding roles in parliament. After Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971, 13 percent of MPs in the countrys first parliament (1973) were businessmen. By 2014, this had risen to59 percentby 2014 and to 61.07 percent in 2018.The massive participation of businessmen in the past two elections both of which have been criticized overboycottsand allegations ofvote rigging has given the country a new shape.

In 2020, this has come to a head. The export-oriented garment industry in Bangladesh comprises more than 4,000 factories and five million workers, the majority of whom are women. The industry earns approximately$35 billioneach year by supplying garments to western companies. While such trade has already boosted the huge economic power of factory owners, the coronavirus pandemic is leaving workers in a much more vulnerable position than factory owners.

Western multinational companies have started cancelling orders, some reportedly without paying for production costs already laid out. Millions of workers are facing destitution having beensent home without pay. As of April, more than$3 billion in orders to around 1,150 factories were in limbo, leaving around 2.8 million workers, mostly women, facing poverty and hunger. In order to complete those orders not yet cancelled, some owners have keptfactories openthrough lockdown without scope for proper social distancing. Restrictions for factories were then relaxed in May despite theincreasing numberof coronavirus cases in Bangladesh. Understandably, many fearthat more and more workers will get infected in the factories.

Some of the biggest retail companies have taken todelaying paymentsand asking for discounts from factories with potentially catastrophic consequences for the women who make their clothes. Neither government nor factory owners nor even the multinational companies are taking clearresponsibility for workerswho were sacked or lost their jobs from factories.

All the while, as the working conditions and the leverage that multinational retail companies have over their suppliers make headlines across the globe largely as a result of heightened awareness in connection with COVID-19, it is worth remembering that these situations do not differ significantly from the status quo, and that inequality between western suppliers and factory owners, and the individuals tasked with making out clothes has been growing, pandemic or not.

COVID-19 has let the virus of inequality run rampant – World Economic Forum

COVID-19 entered a world already struggling with unprecedented levels of inequality.

There can be no return to the neoliberal order that was 'normal' prior to the crisis.

Higher taxation, expanded healthcare and labour rights are just the start of the reforms needed.

Meet Sampa Akter. She sews clothes for global brands in Bangladesh. As with millions of others, she was sent home in March with no pay as COVID-19 canceled orders. Ninety-eight percent of buyers said no to paying lost wages, rich multinationals included. Some are paying now. More factories have reopened. But women like Sampa across the industry, who already lived pay cheque to pay cheque, now face wage cuts. They fear hunger more than sickness. Not all are hit equally, however. It takes a top fashion brand CEO four days to earn what Sampa does in a lifetime.

Think of Jason Hargrove, a bus driver in Detroit, US. He posted a video expressing his frustration about people spreading the virus. Days later, he died. Black Americans, making up a disproportionate number of bus drivers, have been killed at three times the rate of white people by COVID-19. In the UK its four times. Two times if youre ethnic Pakistani. Again, not all are equally hit. If you live in a rich area, your chance of dying of COVID-19 is halved.

Now consider billionaires. If the richest man on Earth made a pile of all his wealth in $100 bills and sat on top, he would be in outer space. US billionaires are half a trillion dollars richer than when the pandemic began. Were seeing similar trends across the world. This at a time in which half a billion people face being pushed into poverty, amid the world's worst recession since the Great Depression, according to the IMF. By December, more people could die each day from hunger linked to coronavirus than from the disease itself.

Such extreme differences define our divided world. They also explain this inequality virus. But its seen as improper to speak out politically, as our families have been hit personally. That politeness looks increasingly like a fig leaf, stopping us from asking hard questions.

Is it not time to get talking again about the economic model that betrays us? About the role of billionaires, and an extreme and widening gap between the richest and the many? COVID-19 entered a world that hasnt seen such concentration of wealth since the days of robber barons and empire. This great divide has made the 99% of us less safe as a result.

It is time to talk, too, about how our great challenges share roots in inequality. The plunder of our planet for profit by a tiny few. White supremacy and racism that systemically excludes people of colour from safety and opportunity, and is used to divide us. Sexism and patriarchy that exploits womens unpaid care work and cheap labour, like that of Sampa, for profit. The democratic breakdown caused by elites buying policies, politicians and a pliant media.

The increase in wealth for America's richest during the pandemic exemplifies global inequality

Image: Institute of Policy Studies

In recent years, Oxfam has charted the rise of extreme inequality.

A world in which 1% of humanity controls as much wealth as the other 99% will never be stable, said President Barack Obama at the UN in 2016, citing our new data.

By 2017, based on the data at the time, we showed that eight billionaires just eight men then owned more wealth than the bottom half of the global population, 3.7 billion people.

By 2019, our data revealed how billionaire fortunes were growing by $2.5 billion each day, while the wealth of half the world, collectively, had dropped by over 10%.

I hope these data are taught in classrooms some day soon, recalling a foolish era we must never return to. Neoliberalism for four decades told us GDP would be good for us all, but it was mostly good for the rich. It told us cutting regulation, taxes and labour laws would offer freedom, but instead it gave us fear. It got rid of referees and left the bullies in charge.

Some wish to return to normal after the coronavirus. Normal is a world in which 10,000 people die each day for lack of access to healthcare what chance did we have to beat COVID-19? while the richest still try to privatize our public health. In which governments, lobbied by big business, undermine the unions we rely upon more than ever for security at work, with 85% of governments violating the right to strike. In which weve long been hurtling towards climate apartheid, with the carbon footprint of the top 1% 175 times that of the poorest 10%.

Aiming to restore the pre-COVID-19 normal is to forget why 2019 saw protests against inequality all over the world. Our economic models need transformation, not restoration. The Financial Times recently called for radical reforms to reverse the prevailing policy direction of the last four decades. They are right.

Change is coming. Neoliberalism faces its reckoning. But the old way will not die fast. Those who burned down forests will lecture us on planting seeds. Greed-washing will be in vogue.

So we must be explicit. A better future relies on our actively and significantly redistributing the wealth and power of the 1% to everyone else. A great reset for our world must be a great equalizer. One that ends the billionaire boom, creating hope for a post-COVID-world.

We know what works. Quality public healthcare, for free, for all. High and inescapable wealth taxes, as rich people are now calling for. A universal labour guarantee that protects workers and ensures a living wage.

Go further yet. Sledgehammer emissions cuts towards net zero. Recognize care work as real work and pay care workers who do the vital work of caring for our children, parents and the vulnerable a living wage. Begin exploring reparations for slavery and colonialism. Regulate who owns, and benefits from, innovative technologies. Grow equitable business models. Go beyond GDP to well-being, as New Zealand has. These are supposedly radical policies that leaders are already trying. It is achievable. Its exciting.

The first global pandemic in more than 100 years, COVID-19 has spread throughout the world at an unprecedented speed. At the time of writing, 4.5 million cases have been confirmed and more than 300,000 people have died due to the virus.

As countries seek to recover, some of the more long-term economic, business, environmental, societal and technological challenges and opportunities are just beginning to become visible.

To help all stakeholders communities, governments, businesses and individuals understand the emerging risks and follow-on effects generated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Marsh and McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group, has launched its COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications - a companion for decision-makers, building on the Forums annual Global Risks Report.

The report reveals that the economic impact of COVID-19 is dominating companies risks perceptions.

Companies are invited to join the Forums work to help manage the identified emerging risks of COVID-19 across industries to shape a better future. Read the full COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications report here, and our impact story with further information.

Above all, it means rejecting a failed economic model that this inequality virus has not forgiven us for. Its time for a far more equal, sustainable and truly human economy that works for all.

Getting There: Barker interchange project set to start but WSDOT revenue woes may jeopardize related Liberty Lake work – The Spokesman-Review

The first in a series of projects aimed at decreasing congestion and improving safety in rapidly growing Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake was supposed to get going Monday. But the start date has been pushed back a week, because the contractor wasnt quite ready.

If thats the last of the delays on the three projects planned to take place over the next two years between Barker to Harvard roads along Interstate 90, officials at the Washington State Department of Transportation in Liberty Lake and in Spokane Valley will be relieved.

Last month, the state released its legally mandated transportation revenue forecast, and the outlook it depicted wasnt exactly sunny.

Among its key conclusions: transportation revenues for WSDOTs current two-year planning period, which started last year and ends next year, will drop sharply by about $482 million, or almost 8%. That expected drop is attributed to impacts of Initiative 976, which will reduce the cost of car tabs and also the size of WSDOTs coffers, and of COVID-19, which led to fewer cars on the road and less revenue for the department from gas taxes.

The reports authors also anticipate a slow recovery from the COVID-19 shutdowns that will lead to a 3.5% drop in revenue over the next 10 years.

So what does that mean for not only the Barker- to-Harvard project, but also the North Spokane Corridor and all the other planned and potential transportation work in Eastern Washington?

We just dont know, Beth Bousley, a spokeswoman for WSDOTs Eastern Region, said this week.

The answer, she said, will have to be hashed out in Olympia, where Gov. Jay Inslee and state legislators will have big conversations about what, if any, projects will be delayed or axed altogether.

In the meantime, though, Were still moving forward as if nothing were to happen, said Tom Brasch, the WSDOT project engineer overseeing construction in the Barker-to-Harvard corridor.

If nothing were to happen, crews would replace the traffic signals at the top of the Barker interchange ramps with a roundabout this summer, widen the Harvard Road overpass and improve the Harvard westbound on-ramps this fall, and next summer construct a new Henry Road connection over I-90 from Mission Avenue on the north to Country Vista Drive to the south.

The almost $4.5 million Barker piece seems certain to happen. When it gets underway, Brasch said crews will work around the clock six days a week to get much of it done and out of the way by Labor Day.

That fast timeline was set to ensure the project didnt disrupt the Central Valley School Districts nearby bus barn on Cataldo Avenue just when schools are slated for what is now a highly uncertain start.

But the quick pace of construction will mean some major disruptions for drivers over two 10-day periods when first the north and then the south intersections of Barker and the interstate ramps are closed completely. During those periods, drivers also wont be able to cross the interstate on Barker, meaning they will be detoured all the way to Flora Road to the west and Harvard Road to the east to travel north or south.

In mid-September, when the Barker project should be mostly complete, WSDOTs focus will shift, if nothing changes, to Liberty Lake.

First up on the schedule is the $6 million Harvard Road interchange project, which is slated to go to bid this week.

There, Brasch said, drivers heading north from Liberty Lake currently have to merge from two lanes to one before crossing I-90, which really bogs down traffic in the area, especially during peak times. To improve the flow of traffic, the road will be widened to two northbound lanes over I-90.

The westbound on-ramp will also be improved. During construction, Brasch said, the plan is to keep the majority of the roads open.

The last and largest piece of the puzzle is the new Henry Road extension and overpass, which is supposed to begin next summer and end a year later, in mid-2022.

While Brasch said so far as we know, nothing is stopping the project from moving forward as planned, Katy Allen, city administrator of Liberty Lake, is less sure that the Harvard and Henry projects in her city will happen on the existing timeline.

Ill be honest with you, she said last week, construction funding for these projects is up in the air.

That uncertainty has Allen concerned. She said creating a new north-south link via Henry Road is crucial for the growing city, which literally goes into meltdown and gridlock when traffic is impeded on the stretch of I-90 that splits Liberty Lakes north and south sections. Currently, Harvard Road is the only way across and it sees about 22,000 average daily trips.

With a new middle school opened last fall and a new high school slated to open at the start of the 2021 school year, Allen said the need for the Henry Road connection is only more urgent.

What Henry Road provides is redundancy, so we can get some circulation going, Allen said. You just open a lot of options when you put in this link.

To help get the $15 million project funded, Allen said the city of Liberty Lake is contributing $6 million of its own money for design and right-of-way work, while Spokane County pitches in another $1.5 million or so. The $8.5 million in construction costs will come from the states Connection Washington program.

While she acknowledges its still up to WSDOT whether the work moves forward, Allen said that because we have skin in the game, if theres funding thats going to be cut back, we hope that the fact that were bringing money to the table will help give us an advantage.

Our strategy, she continued, is to stay the course and keep moving and be ready when we get the nod for the funding. But I guarantee you this, if we arent ready, we wont get the nod. So were doing everything we can to stay funded and on budget.

We just want to be ready to go.

Crews will be pouring the concrete deck for a new overpass at the Medical Lake/I-90 interchange this week. That means eastbound lanes of I-90 will be closed Monday at 9 p.m. until Tuesday at 5 a.m. Westbound lanes will close Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Traffic will be routed off the interstate, up the exit ramps and back onto I-90.

Relay sparks West Liberty to win over Camanche – Quad City Times

Both times it won by three runs.

We had a hard time adjusting to (Wehdes) pitching last time. We did better today, Libby said. We needed to be on top of our game. If I had to give us a grade, itd be a B-.

With the Indians (5-8) leading 3-2, Tarah Wehde was intentionally walked with one out. Lauren Snyder roped a single that ricocheted off the wall and Indians head coach Andrew Carabajal sent Wehde to the plate.

I was hesitant at first, but I wanted to put all my effort into it, Wehde said.

By the time Lehman had the ball in her glove, Wehde was halfway home. The latter slid feet first, and Crees blocked enough of the plate to record the tag for the 8-6-2 out.

We havent had the opportunity to have those relays, said the senior catcher, who registered two hits and an RBI single in the first frame to tie the contest at one. Just to see that one was really exciting.

West Liberty took the momentum by the horns a few minutes later.

RBI singles from Daufeldt, Finley Hall and Brittney Harned that made it through the tiniest of holes in the Camanche defense to give the Comets the lead for good. Hall had two hits while her older sister, Sailor, earned her sixth win in relief.

Change from Lee to Liberty will prompt a quick re-branding for Class 4A Patriots – The Advocate

Give me Liberty and a whole lot more.

Thursday's East Baton Rouge Parish School Board vote to change the name of Lee High School will bring some immediate changes to the schools athletic program.

Athletic director Brandon White saidthe rebranding of the Class 4A school as Liberty High will begin to take shape in athletics terms after a Monday meeting with EBR school system officials. White said the school board will shoulder the cost of changes.

Basically, everything has to be changed, White said. The basketball court, the chairs we use in the gym and other items in the weight room all say Lee.

All our uniforms and other gear also have the Lee logo and will have to be replaced. The school board has said they will cover the cost, which is good. The hope is that we can get started as soon as possible.

Former NBA player Damon Stoudamire, now the basketball coach at the University of Pacific, is the latest clinic speaker to come on board for the LHSCAs virtual convention that begins Monday.

Check lhsca.coachesclinic.com for a full list of 130 speakers who will do Zoom sessions that coaches from Louisiana and Arkansas can log into. The convention/clinic runs through Thursday.

Scheduling issues forced Houston offensive coordinator Shannon Dawsonand Baylor women's basketball assistant Bill Brock to drop out of the clinic.

Istrouma football coach Jeremy Gradney said attendance and morale at summer workouts have been outstanding and he credits junior running back LeVeon Moss as a key factor.

Gradney said Moss, a four-star prospect with scholarship offers from LSU and Alabama among others, has assumed a leadership role. Gradney said Moss has missed just two workouts since June 8, squelching rumors that Moss had moved to Class 5A Walker High.

Both practices he missed were excused absences, Gradney said. Hes been out there leading the way.

David Prescott is returning to coach at the school where he first served as a head football coach. Prescott, most recently the principal at Central Private and Central High, is the defensive line coach at Live Oak.

LOHS defensive coordinator is Prescotts son, Stephen. Prescott was the defensive coordinator at Woodlawn and moved on to head coaching stints at Live Oak, Central and his alma mater, Tara.

Gerald Cayer, best known locally as an assistant coach at both Baker and Plaquemine, died Wednesday. Cayer, 59, was a Baker graduate and a Southern Miss graduate.

The mask, the science and liberty | Columnists – The Connection

Living in Tennessee every winter, we see peoples breath when they are outside. We see it on TV among players on the football field. Tiny droplets of moisture in our breath become condensed to a cloudy mist as they cool down to 45 degrees or below.

We can see that we breathe the same air into our lungs that came out of the lungs of the person next to us. God gave us this Air that We Share. If that air contains the influenza or a coronavirus, such as Covid-19, we breathe it into our lungs.

After inhaling the virus, whether we get sick or not, depends on the battle that our immune system fights against the virus. Lesser the number of enemy soldiers (virus particles) that enter our body, better the chance of victory for our immune system.

A mask is a physical barrier against the number of virus particles that might enter our breathing passages. Type of material and the fit of the mask are important. It is certainly better than allowing free entry, and welcoming the virus into our lungs.

Scientists have studied the misty winter cloud that we create when we breathe out. In the lab, they use a Laser Light Scatter method. Our breath is a mixture of air and moisture with small, medium and large liquid droplets. These droplets carry the virus.

While talking, we put out talking droplets with small amounts of virus. Coughing, sneezing, yelling or singing put out large droplets with a lot of virus. These settle down on surfaces usually within six feet.

It is the medium sized droplets that disperse most of the virus. As their moisture evaporates, virus hangs in the air. A mask is protective in these situations.

I am a surgeon. In my field, the value of a surgical mask is proven. I knew a surgeon whose patients were developing staph infections.A smart infection control nurse took a culture from his throat. It grew staph. She also noticed that his mask was not covering his nose. A proper fit matters. Whenhe wore the mask properly, the results were good! The mask protected his patients.

Masking mandates have been imposed in Germany, Italy, China, Argentina, New York and many cities in the US. These were successful. A mask, at this time, is the next best thing to a vaccine, which we do not have yet!

I, and my fellow healthcare workers, wear masks to protect the public. We know that we can become infected any day. We could have received a negative test the day before. We also know that people are infectious to others even before they feel sick.

Over half of the infections occur in this way. It is a moral duty for us to mask so that we do not spread the infection. We must protect others.

A few common questions are:

This person is at a high risk for infection. By being infected, you become a carrier of the virus, even if you are not sick. You can pass this infection to a person who gets seriously sick. Corona is a new virus. We do not know the long-term behavior or consequences of this new infection, even for you.

I have great respect for this statement. As an immigrant, I am most grateful for the freedoms we enjoy in America! We do have a public health emergency. Generations before us went to wars to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. Hundreds of thousands gave their lives. We are just being asked to wear a mask for a while. We obey rules regarding traffic lights, speed limits, seat belts, DUI laws, no smoking in public places and many more.

We have discussed these concerns at the Tennessee General Assembly. It is under consideration that a declaration of emergency lasting beyond 60 or 90 days be approved by the Legislature.

Strong protections for Freedom and Liberty are enshrined in our Constitution. We must protect those! We must also be good stewards and show personal responsibility to protect fellow citizens.

Respect and empathy must go to our leaders who make difficult decisions with limited information and a good heart! We are faced with an uncertain future that no one has seen before, not even our experts!

In John 13: 34, Christ tells us to love one another. This is an especially critical time for our nation. Let us follow His Command.

Liberty can be hard to achieve, but blessings are many

Editor, The News:

From Biblical times onward, the history of liberty and progress among various peoples seem to have followed a similar pattern.

At some point in their history, all peoples seem to have existed in some form of bondage.

Fortunately, records show that people can regain their faith, understanding and courage.

They can again become persons and citizens who are responsible for their own welfare. They can be their own intelligent actions, regain their liberty any time they want.

Story continues below video

Liberty is a relationship among persons wherein no person causes harm to any other peaceful person in his ideas, possessions or actions.

It is the responsibility one assumes for himself/herself and recognizes in all others. It is important to know that liberty has never existed completely among any people at any time.

Where it has existed to a high degree, the freedom to work, trade, choose, win, lose and bargain has always meant abundance was available.

The Supreme Court Tries to Settle the Religious Liberty Culture War – TIME

Rarely has a single Supreme Court term created such alternating spasms of anger and joy, bouncing back and forth across the ideological aisle. And rarely has that seesaw reaction been so concentrated into a single, salient cultural issue the perceived conflict between gay rights and religious liberty.

By the end of this term, however, a trend seemed clear a slice of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Elena Kagan, seemed set on settling this conflict, if not once and for all, at least by providing a framework that can and will guide future courts. In doing so, they were pursuing a coherent legal philosophy that was grounded neither in the originalism of the courts most conservative quartet of judges, nor in the living constitution malleability of progressive jurisprudence.

For more than a decade, one of the most contentious battles in American politics has centered around the clash between LGBTQ Americans seeking legal recognition for their families and greater legal protection from discrimination in schools, workplaces, and businesses and traditional religious Americans who seek the liberty to advocate for their sexual moral norms (which generally reserve sex for marriage and define marriage as the union of a man and a woman) in the public square and to enforce those norms in their own private institutions (at church, at the workplace).

The questions raised have been legion, and not all of them have been settled. Same sex marriage was decided in 2015, but undecided until this term was the question whether federal anti-discrimination law (which bans discrimination on the basis of sex) also prohibited an employer from firing an employee simply because they are gay or transgender.

At the same time, the court wrestled with important religious liberty cases. Among them, could a Christian baker be forced to custom-design a cake for a same-sex wedding? Were anti-discrimination laws applicable to Christian schools who hired teachers engaged in faith-based instruction?

And through it all, activists have clamored, Which will it be? Gay rights or religious liberty?

Congress has proven useless in reaching any kind of resolution to the dispute. The Equality Act a Democratic initiative that extends broad workplace protections for LGBTQ Americans and explicitly limits the reach of religious liberty passed the House in 2019 and is going nowhere in the Senate. Republicans, for their part (and much to the frustration of social conservatives), are largely content to simply block Democratic legislation without passing any additional affirmative protections for religious freedom.

A piece of compromise legislation, called Fairness for All, has gone nowhere. Modeled broadly on a legislative compromise in the state of Utah which extended workplace protections for LGBTQ citizens while also carving out strong religious liberty protections for religious institutions, Fairness for All has few friends on either side of the aisle. Both sides view it as retreating on core goals of their respective movements

Progressive activists dont like to see accommodations made for religious institutions that employ hundreds of thousands and minister to millions. They feel the act exposes too many LGBTQ Americans to hurtful discrimination. Conservatives, in the words of Public Discourse editor-in-chief Ryan Anderson, argue that Fairness for All allow[s] the government to use civil rights law as a sword to punish citizens for disagreement on sexual ideology.

For example, if a Christian employee states at a secular workplace that he or she believes that marriage is a union of a man and a woman, is that evidence of hostile environment harassment? Should a non-religious athletic league be free to reserve athletic competition to contests between biological males and biological females, rather than including transgender athletes?

Legislatively, no one is moving. The last significant religious liberty legislation was passed during the Clinton Administration. No one is compromising. The Supreme Court, however, has. By shifting alliances from case to case, Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kagan are enacting a new legal regime, and its starting to look a lot like Fairness for All.

In hindsight, the outlines of this judicial compromise were first outlined in the Supreme Courts Obergefell decision, which held that the Constitution protected a right to same-sex marriage. Near the end of his majority opinion, Justice Kennedy specifically noted that religious believers could continue to articulate their sincere objections to same-sex marriage. The First Amendment, he wrote, ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths, and to their own deep aspirations to continue the family structure they have long revered.

Since that case, Roberts and Kagan have been in the majority of every opinion relevant to the clash between gay rights and religious liberty. In Masterpiece Cakeshop, Justice Kagan (along with Justice Breyer) joined the Republican-nominated justices to hold that the state of Colorado may not target a Christian baker for his religious beliefs after the baker refused to custom-design a cake that celebrated a same-sex marriage.

This term, Justice Roberts (along with Justice Gorsuch) joined the Democratic-nominated justices in Bostock, a case extending workplace nondiscrimination protections to gay and transgender Americans.

Less than a month later, Justice Kagan (again with Justice Breyer) slid back over to join the Republican nominees in Our Lady of Guadalupe, a case that broadly extended the scope of the so-called ministerial exception to nondiscrimination laws. The ministerial exception prohibits the state from applying all nondiscrimination laws to ministerial employees. At a stroke, the Supreme Court rendered Bostock entirely inapplicable to tens of thousands of religious employees at thousands of religious institutions across the United States.

Do you see the pattern? Does it not look a lot like Fairness for All? The court is extending nondiscrimination protections in secular spaces while blocking targeted discrimination against people of faith and also expanding the autonomy and liberty of religious organizations.

This is the point where originalists like me start to pull (whats left of) our hair out. While the resulting jurisprudence may well reflect a cultural and legal compromise that many Americans like, it is not the role of courts to reach for political and cultural consensus. Negotiation and compromise across differences is the lifeblood of the legislative branch, and indeed negotiation and compromise to reach resolutions in a divided, pluralistic nation helps knit together our national fabric.

By punting through inertia or cowardice the most contentious questions entirely to the courts, Congress removes disputes to the governmental body most removed from the people. It undermines the democratic process. Congress subordinates itself in the hierarchy of American constitutional power, and thus the body closest to the people is now Americas weakest branch.

Its hard to place the lions share of the blame for our nations emerging juristocracy on courts when the nations activists recognize congressional impotence and react accordingly. Why waste time and money with fruitless and frustrating lobbying, when you can file a lawsuit and force a judicial response? Judges cant simply ignore complaints filed in their courts. They have to act, by granting or dismissing claims.

Those actions then generate appeals, those appeals have different outcomes, and then the Supreme Court has to step in to settle conflicts. The operation of law itself compels judicial action. Consequently, it makes sense for activists to blanket the nation in litigation in the hopes of reaching the Supreme Court.

And so, here we are. Decades of recent history have taught us that dominating the Supreme Court is an elusive, if not impossible, goal in a closely-divided nation. Smart justices can exercise outsized power (as Justice Kennedy did for years) when their votes are up for grabs.

Thus, judicial compromise to reach necessary outcomes is just as inevitable in court as its become impossible in Congress. When the Court has to act, it will act, and in this area of important cultural conflict, the compromise has emerged.

Justices Roberts and Kagan have set the terms. Its not gay rights or religious liberty. Its gay rights and religious liberty. Religious institutions have more autonomy. The secular workplace is now more open to LGBTQ Americans. And ordinary Americans are left to wonder why Supreme Court justices seem to be the last true negotiators left in Americas constitutional republic.

Hamilton: Thomas Jefferson Controversy Explained – World Top Trend

In truth, Hamilton or not, Jefferson himself is on the forefront of this dialogue with some voices calling for the overall celebration of the founding father to finish. Recognized by most merchandise of the American training system solely because the writer of the hovering rhetoric of the Declaration of Independenceand its then-radical vision of those self-evident truths that all males are created equal, that theyre endowed by their Creator with sure unalienable Rights, that amongst these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happinesshis apparent hypocrisy on not extending these beliefs to the 200 folks he owned at Monticello on the time might be overwhelming. A lot so, even two of his personal descendants, one descended from his white spouse Martha Jefferson and one from his Black mistress, and Marthas half-sister, Sally Hemings, have just lately called for the possible removal of the Jeffersons statue on the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.

Judging historic figures by fashionable social standards can usually be an illusory activity, however within the case of Jefferson and the difficulty of slavery, even he was conscious of the evil inherent within the Souths peculiar establishment. A self-styled thinker and American thinker, his behavior for analyzing and self-reflection within the mold of post-Renaissance humanism was immortalized by the mansion on a hill he designed for himself: Monticello, Italian for Little Mountain, sat on the heart of his 5,000-acre plantation. There hed be seen as the good determine pacing his balcony at dawn every morning, stewing over radical concepts concerning the separation of Church and State, the necessity for a decimal system in U.S. foreign money and measurements, and the swivel chair (sure, he invented it). But the proud man was blind to the truth that his intellectual leisure was made attainable by the a whole bunch of Black our bodies round him toiling in Monticellos fields and choosing his tobacco, or serving his visitors below concern of punishment.

Nonetheless, he was conscious sufficient. Therefore a passage within the Declaration of Independence the place he tried to blame the British crown for being liable for the slave trade within the North American coloniesSouth Carolina and Georgias delegates pressured him to take it outand the very fact he proposed in 1781 that Virginia emancipate its slaves by 1784, shifting them into the inside North American continent (he thought-about separation necessary partly as a result of he considered Black folks intellectually inferior to whites). He even proposed in 1784 that the Congress of the Confederation (below the pre-Structure Articles of Confederation) prohibit slavery in all future states created out of the Northwest territory. Whereas his fellow Southern representatives defeated his proposal that 12 months, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 made it so, stopping future states like Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan from changing into slave states.

Nonetheless, he dedicated what we now call rape when he made Sally Hemings a lover in France, doubtless when she was 14 and he was 43. It was at these ages after they met, with Hemings being despatched as a companion for his daughter Polly on a voyage throughout the Atlantic. On the time, Jefferson had already been Minister to France for years, pursuing a number of political beliefs and the bed room after his spouse Martha died in 1781extracting on her deathbed a promise from her husband to by no means marry once more. However when Sally arrived in France, right here was the a lot youthful half-sister of his useless spouse, a woman identified by different slaves at Monticello as Dashing Sally due to her gentle pores and skin and straight hair. Simply as Jefferson would take Sally as a lover, his father-in-law John Wayles had taken Sallys mom Elizabeth Hemings as his personal coerced mistress. And Elizabeth was likewise the daughter of one other white man and Black slave.

The way in which Madison Hemings, considered one of Jefferson and Hemings 4 kids to outlive to maturity, tells it:

Their stay was about eighteen months. However throughout that point my mom grew to become Mr Jeffersons concubine, and when he was referred to as dwelling she was enceinte by him. He desired to deliver my mom again to Virginia with him however she demurred. She was simply starting to grasp the French language properly, and in France she was free, whereas if she returned to Virginia she can be re-enslaved. So she refused to return with him. To induce her to take action he promised her extraordinary privileges, and made a solemn pledge that her kids must be free on the age of twenty-one years. In consequence of his guarantees, on which she implicitly relied, she returned with him to Virginia. Quickly after their arrival, she gave start to a child, of whom Thomas Jefferson was the daddy.

Pardon me while I engage in a momentary hissy fit.

How is it harmless for a 60-something-year-old woman to sustain 103-degree body temps sometimes higherfor 14 straight days? In Week Three, she is enjoying a more normal body temperature of 102. Also, outstanding is a hacking cough and three weeks of labored breathing so that a five-minute phone conversation is too much to sustain. Is there a level-headed, relatively sane human being among us who is exclaiming, I cant wait to experience Covid-19 symptoms for myself. Even for the thrill seekers among us, this virus has no place on anyones Bucket List.

In a second situation, my extremely health-conscious friend (a New York City school teacher) who devours a pound of steamed broccoli at a single seating and calls that a meal, contracted the virus in the classroom in March. To date, she has yet to regain her sense of taste and sense of smell. Should you doubt the significance of this loss, consider that not tasting ones food might lead to serious depression and extreme weight loss. After all, why continue to consume three meals a day if you dont derive some pleasure from your food intake? What if your favorite snack suddenly tasted like cardboard? Or had the appeal of plain boiling water?

When my friend was in full virus-mode, nausea and dizziness for six straight weeks was responsible for a 15-pound weight loss she could ill afford. You might find her lying flat on the floor of her apartment when the virus was at its worst. Sixteen weeks from the onset, lingering symptoms remain, including balance issues. Believing the virus to be behind her, she finds herself stumbling and losing her footing when she least expects it. Still, she remains grateful for having a mild case that kept her out of the E.R.

One Long Island woman who prides herself on a disciplined organic lifestyle, contracted the virus and continues to suffer with on-going symptoms that mimic multiple sclerosis. She goes to bed at night frightened that the lingering neurological symptoms (alternating numbness and tingling in both her arms and legs) may worsen or become chronic and permanent. Countless Americans go to bed each night frightened for symptoms they dont understand and their physicians dont fully understand either.

Just when you thought things couldnt get worse, on Wednesday, July 8, CNN announced Coronavirus Pandemic could cause a wave of brain damage. This news comes as a result of a study by British researchers at University College of London and published in the Journal, Brain. The findings express concern for complications post-Coronavirus such as stroke, nerve damage and potentially fatal brain inflammation even among patients who had a mild form of the virus. Patients studied ranged in age from 16-85.

If only we could wish away the worry, but its not that simple. Regardless of whether or not you acknowledge G-D, Buddha, humanism or atheism, why not be grateful for the one bright light in the midst of this medical madness. There already exists a low-cost, proven winner capable of combatting Covid-19. It comes in a variety of colors, materials and price points. Visitors to the popular website Etsy are no doubt familiar with the distinctive options in fabric face coverings. There are endless smile-worthy options.

Query any Emergency Room or ICU patient and theyll tell you 103-degree daily temps are best suited for the tropics not for human body temperatures. So listen up, Long Island, the personal responsibility you demonstrate today may mean the difference between life and death or lingering illness tomorrow.

Be bold, be brash, but please protect yourself with a face mask. Finally, please remember to fully cover your nose and your mouth. The war against Covid-19 wont be won with peek-a-boo nostrils showing or a downward sliding face covering.

Irish Repertory Theatre: The WeirTuesday 7pm EDT / midnight BST (live only)After its success in May with a virtual revival of Brian Friels Molly Sweeney, the Irish Rep is offering a summer season of love online productions of three other shows from the companys history. This week, the company revisits its excellent 2013 revival of Conor McPherson's 1997 drama, a series of tall tales told by four Irishmen vying for the attention of a woman in a pub. The Irish Repertory Theatres offering boasts a palpable liquidity, an accelerating rush of people swept off their feet by loneliness who are nonetheless caught and stilled in a village bar, wrote Helen Shaw in her five-star Time Out review. But the work moves beyond mere coziness; an excellent cast and McPhersons profoundly felt humanism make the piece warming on some deep, maybe even soul-deep, level. Three members of the 2013 castDan Butler, Sean Gormley and Irish Rep utility player John Keatingare joined this time by Amanda Quaid and Tim Ruddy, all directed once again by Ciarn OReilly. The play will be performed live five more times this week at different times; each performance is free, but a $25 donation is suggested and registration at least two hours in advance is required.

Cyberpunk 2077 Team is Trying to Set a New ‘Benchmark’ – GameRant

CD Projekt Red's Level Designer Max Pears speaks about how Cyberpunk 2077 plans to be a new benchmark for game development moving forward.

CD Projekt Red clearly has some big plans for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, possibly even too big as some of these aspirations have likely led to the game's most recent delay. However, if the developer's wishes come true, players may be in for the definitive experience of both this and the next generation of gaming.

This latest news from inside CDPR comes in the form of an interview with Level Designer Max Pears in the latest issue of Edge Magazine, where the developer talked about making Cyberpunk 2077 and the expectations of the company after titles like The Witcher 3. Pears has previously been a source of information for the game, recently revealing the removal ofCyberpunk's wall run feature, and returning to temper players' expectations.

RELATED: Cyberpunik 2077: 5 Confirmed Things From The Tabletop (& 5 We hope They'll Use)

In the interview, Pears comments on how Cyberpunk 2077 is planning on setting a "benchmark" for gaming, relating the upcoming title to how The Witcher 3 had become a definitive representation of open-world titles in its time. With stunning visuals, powered by ray tracing in some versions, it's hard to believe that CDPR's latest title won't make waves when it does finally release. Combine this new aesthetic with the company's history of making immersive open world's, and it becomes apparent why so many players are excited about what the developer might have in store next.

Pears also acknowledged that every game and development studio is always out to advance the industry in their own ways by innovating and pushing each project as far as it can go. However, CDPR's track record makes the designer confident that the company has what it takes to create new benchmarks for developers to strive for with each of these huge, open-world projects. While it may not be a competition between developers, as new Cyberpunk 2077 news comes to light, it seems like this may be the title that is leading the way.

Of course, every developer wants to imagine that their game is the one that will move the industry forward, innovating on ideas that others will take note of and start copy/pasting into every future release. So, Pears claiming that Cyberpunk 2077 will be the benchmark for modern gaming, and the bar to strive for when Next-Gen consoles launch, is nothing new for AAA developers. However, with what has been shown so far about the game's mechanics and player abilities, CDPR's latest project looks to be raising the bar once again for open-world RPGs, even if only slightly.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release November 19th, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X version planned for the future.

Cyberpunk 2077 Offers Unique Way for Beating the Game | Game Rant – GameRant

Cyberpunk 2077's lead quest designer, Pawel Sasko, explains how players can beat the open world game without completing the main story.

One of the major players in the development ofCyberpunk 2077 shared an interesting tidbit about the game's story and its progression. Depending on the side quests players complete, they may be able to finish the game without resolving Cyberpunk 2077's main story.

A few days ago, the Polish website Spider's Web brought in Pawel Sasko, the lead quest designer for CD Projekt Red'sCyberpunk 2077, to talk about the game's quests and how they'll work in regards to the main story. As VG24/7 reported and translated, one of the biggest revelations from the interview is how the game compensates for having a shorter story thanThe Witcher 3. WhereasThe Witcher 3 had a story structure featuring the main thread of history and side branches,Cyberpunk 2077 takes a different approach based on what the team learned fromThe Witcher 3. Sasko explains:

RELATED:Cyberpunk 2077: 5 Confirmed Things From The Tabletop (& 5 We Hope Theyll Use)

"So in the Cyberpunk's structure we have this wheat spike, which serves as it's center, the main storyline with different subplots surrounding it, which can be triggered in a various ways. Those subplots allow us to do something that we have never done before, they change the main plot of the game and they are doing that in such a way that you may not even finish the main plot, but still finish the game and get a completely different epilogue then the player with a different lifepath who made different choices, met different characters and formed relationships with them."

As Sasko points out, the backstory players choose for V, the game's protagonist, also plays a part in how the story plays out. Depending on whether V is a Corpo, a Street Kid, or a Nomad, they'll meet ex-Valentinos member Jackie under different circumstances and have a different relationship with him. This means that one of the very first decisions players make in the game will have a profound effect on its world and how the story plays out.

In addition to the details onV's relationship with Jackie, V's life path also dictates which of the 75 side quests they can take. Given that side quests are capable of changing how the story plays out, this means thatcertain story branches are only available to certain life paths. It's safe to say that this method of branching story offers quite a bit of freedom and a wide variety of choices to make.

Cyberpunk 2077comes out on November 19 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X versions to follow.

10 Sick Cyberpunk Car Renders We’d Love To Drive In Real Life – HotCars

Some truly amazing artists have created these awesome cyberpunk car renders, and we can't help but wonder if this is the future of car modifications>!

The cyberpunk style is all the rage at the moment, especially with the insanely hyped Cyberpunk 2077 coming soon. The partly in the future, partly in the present aesthetic of cyberpunk means that it can be applied to all kinds of things that we use on a daily basis.RELATED: Do You Want A Futuristic Car? Check Out These RidesWith the help of some 3D modeling or Photoshop, various talented automotive enthusiasts have imagined what some beloved cars from the past few decades would look like with a little bit of cyberpunk flair, and the results are impressive. Here are 10 sick renders of cyberpunk cars we'd love to get behind the wheel of in real life.

In this particular instance, the Cybertruck is a great starting point. It even has it in its name. But pioneer of crazy virtual customization Khyzyl Saleem has taken it a step further.

This Cybertruck has been dropped to the ground, given some additional lighting, some chunky mud-running tires, and various carbon-fiber bodywork additions. The end result is something that wouldn't look too out of place in Blade Runner, or indeed, Cyberpunk 2077.

This absolutely crazy Supra was done by the insanely talented Pedro Guerreiro, also known as Typerulez on social media and artist platforms.

It features various insane components, such as the race car-inspired rims, fender-mounted exhausts and the rear wing, which seems to be inspired by a whale tail.

The R34 Skyline is one of those cars that has simply engraved its name in history, so it's only natural to assume that people will still be driving them 40 or 50 years from now. Khyzyl Saleem has imagined what it would look like, and the end results are certainly interesting.

The car doesn't seem to use conventional tires, and it also borrows its exhaust system from the Pagani Zonda or Huayra. The rear scoop and pipework suggests that there might be some type of additional engine or maybe a mid-engine configuration happening.

While this is not a real car, it basically looks like what would happen if the fastest supercars out there took a page out of the BAC Mono or Ariel Atom book and removed their windshields.

The car itself was designed by Pedro Guerreiro, and then rendered and touched up by Hugo Silva Designs. It features various enhancements like turbofans on the front wheels and an intricate rear diffuser setup, resulting in something totally wild.

This render was also done by Khyzyl Saleem, and the mood in the picture is definitely set, leaving no doubt that this virtual Porsche hails from a cyberpunk area.

The best detail about it definitely has to be the slim red LED strip that runs the entire width of the rear wing, replacing the headlights that would be found further down. Not much else is visible, but this 964 wouldn't look too out of place 40 years in the future. Would RWB be around by then, though?

Created by Typerulez, this Mustang Mach 1 has everything one could ever want from a cyberpunk-inspired concept. Everything from the mismatched wheels, with modern JDM build on the front and hot rod on the back, the giant blower, the wing, the additional lighting, and those crazy sidepipes.

The best part? The artist has depicted this Mustang's owner/driver lining up at a McDonald's drive-thru. Is the order placed by way of a holographic interface?

This other Mustang, meanwhile, also nails the cyberpunk aesthetic, with a few bits of graffiti and wear and tear in some places. It's also painted in a satin black color but features various purple accents on the wheels and the chassis components on the rear.

RELATED: 15 Little-Known Facts About The US Air Force's Custom Mustang X-1

The attention to detail by artist Timothy Adry is also spectacular, that detail coming in the form of the hacker gentleman resting on the hood performing some sort of "robot calibration" as the image seems to infer. Is the robot in question the car, perhaps?

Designed by Veer Design, this R31 Skyline takes its cyberpunk influence a step further, by featuring stuff from the game's lore, as well as the logo on the rear fender.

RELATED: 14 Pics Showing The Nissan GTR's Evolution

Like the others, everything about this car screams cyberpunk, from the glowing blue tires, to the X pattern on the headlights instead of conventional bulbs, and everything else in between.

Created by Basil Designs, this Huracan is nowhere near as insane when compared to the other cars on this list, but it's still very cyberpunk.

One of its standout features that puts it squarely into the future is the wheels. Though they seem to be inspired by Fifteen52 designs, the spokes themselves appear on the wheels as lights, without there being actual spokes. Combine that with the subtle widebody kit, and even though this Huracan is fairly subtle, it wouldn't look out of place in the future.

Everything about this Focus is just absolutely crazy. From the paint scheme, to the wing, to the bodywork in general, to the lights that it seems to have borrowed from the Renault Twin'Run concept, it encompasses everything a cyberpunk car should be.

Though the future of cars seems to be fully electric, these cyberpunk renders show what it might be like if old cars are still allowed on the roads 40 years later and allowed to be modified like this. If the future these renders predict does become a reality, then there's a lot of hope left for any generation of the gearhead, particularly the new ones.
