The central bank of France is on the verge of conducting a series of sweeping experiments whose lessons could be used to change the way money works. Cryptocurrency wont be included. In a statement from the Banque de France, the nations central bank, which works together with the European Central Bank to determine the monetary policy of the continent, the institution today released the names of eight participants in the experiments and the scope of the work.

Participants are consulting giant Accenture ACN , settlement giant Euroclear, the HSBC bank, French firm, Iznes, etheruem platform LiquidShare, little-known startup, ProsperUS, crypto bank Seba, and Forge, Societe Generales digital capital markets spinoff. The broad parameters of the experiments include everything from testing regulation using digital currency to improve cross-border payments, an analysis of how a central bank digital currency should be made available, and importantly, to explore new methods of exchanging financial instruments (excluding crypto-assets) for central bank money.

The statement from one of the words leading central banks shows how the vaunted institutions are scrambling to learn the best that cryptocurrency, and its underlying blockchain technology have to offer, but only within limits. Neither blockchainthe shared ledger that lets bitcoin existnor the more sanitized word to describe the larger group of technologiesdistributed ledger technology were mentioned by name in the statement. As such, the work also helps define the limits of what any actual adoption of the technology might look like.

The strong mobilization around this call for candidates testifies to the interest of the actors of finance and technology for this approach aiming to explore the potential contributions of a digital money issued by the central bank to improve the functioning of financial markets, in particular interbank regulations, according to a Google GOOGL translation of the statement. A representative of the Banque de France declined to share any additional context.

Over the coming days, the Banque de France will begin conducting experiments with each of the candidates, according to the statement, with some of the projects expected to take as long as multiple months. Candidates were asked to respond to the banks call for applications for CBDC experiments by May 15. The experiments could have far-reaching implications to the decision-making processes for the central bank, which in addition to helping define Europes monetary policy and implement it in France, regulates Frances banks and insurance companies and ensures risk management.

Beyond the confines of France though, lessons learned from the central bank digital currency experiments will be contributed to the international work being led by the Eurosystem, the monetary authority of the European Union. Earlier this month, the bank joined Germanys central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and the European Central Bank in co-hosting a new innovation center in Europe within the framework of the Innovation Hub of the Bank for International Settlements.

In May, European Central Bank executive board member, Yves Mersch, confirmed in a speech at industry conference Consensus, that the European Central Bank was one of at least 66 central banks exploring how lessons learned from blockchain could change the very fabric of what we consider money.

For example, Chinas central bank, the Peoples Bank of China, has taken a giant first-mover advantage in the space, starting its CBDC experiments years ago, and currently testing a working implementation. If successful, one side-effect of CBDCs could be borderless transactions, possibly giving people the choice to store Chinese Renminbi in addition to, or instead of dollars, as a global reserve currency,

Based on what we know of the nearly pervasive experiments around the world looking into the nature of CBDCs, some of the other possible changes to the way money works could include giving citizens accounts at central banks, allowing them to occasionally bypass commercial banks and receive direct access to stimulus checks and more. Another possible, but controversial side-effect of central bank digital currencies could enable online payments while maintaining the privacy citizens have historically enjoyed with cash.

Skeptics of the CBDC concept argue that so long as central banks continue to have the authority to print or issue nearly unlimited amounts of the currency the underlying problems of inflation will continue to drive people to more distributed, deflationary alternatives such as bitcoin, which has a set amount. Other skeptics point to the unlikelihood that central banks will ever actually allow citizens the same privacy they have in the real world, online, and could use the technology as a way to track their own citizens spending habits.

Grayscale announced yesterday that shares of their digital asset funds, Bitcoin Cash Trust and Litecoin Trust, have FINRA approval for public quotation under BCHG and LTCN.They will be the first digital asset-based funds to be publicly quoted in the U.S. market.

These funds will be open-ended trusts sponsored by Grayscale and are intended to enable exposure to the price movement of the trusts underlying assets through a traditional investment vehicle. The idea is to provide an accredited investor the opportunity to invest in digital assets while avoiding buying, storing, and safekeeping digital Bitcoin or Litecoin directly.

The trusts are not yet DTC eligible. Grayscale said in its press releases, There will be no trading volume in the Shares public quotations until the respective Shares are DTC eligible, which BCHG and LTCN are expected to receive soon.The company continued, The Trusts are not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and are not subject to disclosure and certain other requirements mandated byU.S.securities laws.

Cryptocurrency exchanges, in general, are not yet fully regulated by FINRA and the SEC. The result has been limited adoption by large institutional investors and hedge funds.

But Grayscales achievement by moving in that direction signals that regulatory barriers can be resolved.Digital assets may become more commonplace in funds seeking alpha value opportunities and diversification.

Why BitMEX Just Invested In This South African Bitcoin Exchange – Forbes

The parent company of BitMEX invested in South Africa's largest Bitcoin exchange.

100x Ventures, the venture arm of the parent company of BitMEX, invested in South Africa's largest Bitcoin exchange, VALR.

Two factors likely propelled 100x Ventures to invest in the exchange. First, it positions the company for additional growth in overseas markets. Second, it allows the firm to meet the demand for regional exchanges and trading services.

The Series A funding round led by 100x Ventures raised $3.4 million for the exchange. VALR says it has 40,000 users and has processed 13,000 BTC in the past month.

Reasons the Investment Could Have Been Compelling For the BitMEX Parent Company

100x Venture's investment in VALR directly positions itself to gain exposure to a developing crypto market in South Africa.

BitMEX has remained a dominant force in the futures market for several years. But, regional investments allow BitMEX and 100x Group to diversify its business further.

According to data from Skew.com, BitMEX remains as the most dominant Bitcoin futures exchange in the global market. It has an open interest of $1.02 billion, more than double its competitors, like Binance and Bybit.

Another reason for the investment could have been the rapidly expanding regional peer-to-peer Bitcoin markets. In many countries outside of major cryptocurrency markets, there is a shortage of well-regulated and transparent Bitcoin exchanges.

Consequently, the volume of peer-to-peer exchanges that allow users to trade directly with one another began to surge.

Technology researcher Kevin Rooke found that peer-to-peer Bitcoin volumes recently hit record highs in India, Ghana, the Philippines, and Mexico.

Peer-to-peer trading is typically an alternative to exchanges in regions or markets that lack a proper exchange infrastructure.

Given the evident increase in demand for regional exchanges, the investment of 100x Venture fills a gap between major and relatively small crypto markets.

Arthur Hayes, the CEO and co-founder of 100x Group, said:

A stable mining industry could cause selling pressure on the cryptocurrency exchange market to gradually decline in the medium-term.

The investment comes during a period when the sentiment is largely positive. The price of Bitcoin has tended to rally following every block reward halving, and some investors foresee a prolonged uptrend.

Jason Williams, the co-founder and partner at Morgan Creek Digital,saidhe expects a new all-time high for Bitcoin in 2020.

Russia Shelves Plans to Criminalize Bitcoin Transactions – For Now | Regulation – Bitcoin News

Russia has dropped plans to criminalize bitcoin transactions for now, according to local media reports.

The Digital Financial Assets Bill (DFA), due to be read for the second time in the Russian parliament or State Duma on July 21, has removed references to administrative and criminal liability for dealing in bitcoin (BTC). A third and final reading will establish it as law.

There will be no liability in this bill, Anatoly Aksakov, head of the parliaments financial markets committee, told local news agency Ria Novosti. Aksakov, who is sponsoring the draft law, said the idea to penalize BTC investors with fines and jail terms had been set aside for the time being.

Theyve removed everything, theres only a link that the regulation of digital currency will be determined in another law, he stated.

An earlier version of the DFA bill proposed to levy fines of up to $7,000 or seven years in jail for individuals buying bitcoin with cash. It also planned to punish companies that issue or operate virtual currencies without approval from the Russian central bank, with fines of up to two million rubles or about $28,000.

Under the original bill, companies would have to pay the equivalent of one million rubles ($13,900) and individuals at least 200,000 rubles ($2,800) for violation of the rules for transactions with cryptocurrencies, if they are used as payment for goods or services.

According to Aksakov, the revised draft law, in its current format, now deals with issues around the definition of digital financial assets and establishes requirements for blockchain operations, among other matters.

He expects the proposed law to enter into force on January 1, 2021, once it is adopted in the second and third readings, in the spring session. The State Duma spring session ends July 23, Ria Novosti reported.

However, Russian lawmakers are planning another special law on crypto regulation that might reintroduce severe penalties for dealing in BTC, as originally proposed.

There will be a special law on digital currency, which can be adopted in the autumn session, Aksakov was quoted as saying. The autumn session ends in December.

Cryptocurrencies remain a grey area in Russia, with the legal status of smart contracts, initial coin offerings and mining not clearly defined despite a raft of proposals brought to parliament for this purpose.

Former Amazon vice president calls for the company to split its retail and cloud businesses – CNBC

Tim Bray, anAmazon vice president and senior engineer who resignedin protest in May, is calling for the company to spin off its lucrative cloud-computing business.

Spinning off Amazon Web Services from the company's retail business would allow it to grow AWS even more, since Amazon would no longer risk alienating potential clients who are wary of working with a competitor, Bray said in a "Squawk Box" interview on Friday.

"That's a headwind because you could be reluctant to sign a deal with a web services operator if you're worried that by doing so you're funding one of your competitors," Bray said. "I think it would unleash AWS's growth, which is already very good, if it were not joined at the hip with Amazon."

AWS remains one of Amazon's biggest profit drivers. In the first quarter of 2020, operating income from AWS totaled $3.08 billion, accounting for 77% of Amazon's overall operating income. However, AWS only represented 13.5% of Amazon's total revenue for the quarter.

Bray resigned dramatically from Amazon in May via a fiery blog post, in which he spurned the company's decision to fire two former user experience designers, Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa, who were both outspoken critics of Amazon's labor practices. Bray said Amazon's decision to fire whistleblowers was "evidence of a vein of toxicity running through the company culture" and remaining at Amazon would have meant "signing off on actions I despised."

Bray has laid out similar arguments for breaking up Amazon in the past.

In June, hesuggested in a blog post that Amazon might choose to proactively split off AWS from the company as an effort to get ahead of looming antitrust scrutiny.

Amazon's cloud business is reportedly beingscrutinizedas part of an ongoing antitrust probe by the Federal Trade Commission into the company's retail operations. In addition to the FTC, Amazon is also being investigated by the House Judiciary Committee, which is overseeing an antitrust investigation into big tech companies.

Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS, said in a June interview that Amazon would "follow U.S. law" and comply with regulators if they required a spinoff, but added that there isn't a benefit to separating AWS now.

At least seven British universities hit by ransomware attack on cloud provider – www.computing.co.uk

At least six British universities were targeted in Blackbaud ransomware attack

At least seven higher education institutions in the UK have been hit in a global ransomware attack targeting US-based cloud computing provider Blackbaud.

Blackbaud's systems were hacked in May, but the incident was not publicly disclosed until 16th July.

According to the BBC, the institutions that were affected in the cyber attack include:

In a statement on its website, Blackbaud revealed that it had paid an undisclosed ransom to hackers after being promised that the data stolen from the Blackbaud's systems would be destroyed.

"Because protecting our customers' data is our top priority, we paid the cybercriminal's demand with confirmation that the copy they removed had been destroyed," the company said.

"Based on the nature of the incident, our research and third party (including law enforcement) investigation, we have no reason to believe that any data went beyond the cybercriminal, was or will be misused; or will be disseminated or otherwise made available publicly," it added.

No bank account details, credit card details or social security numbers of any individual were accessed by hackers, according to the company.

According to BBC, the hackers were able to steal names, gender, contact information, email address and donation history in some cases.

Some affected institutions, including the University of London, University of York, Oxford Brookes and Ambrose University have written to their former students, faculty and donors about the security incident warning them that their data may have been compromised in the breach.

In a statement, the University of York said that university officials were "working with Blackbaud to understand why there was a delay between them finding the breach and notifying us, as well as what actions they have taken to increase their security."

The university said it has informed Information Commissioner Office (ICO) about the incident and was "awaiting further guidance".

The ICO said: "People have the right to expect that organisations will handle their personal information securely and responsibly."

"The University of York has reported an incident to us, and we will be making inquiries."

But, this is not the first incident in which British universities have been targeted in cyber attacks.

In 2018, a group of Iranian hackers attempted to hack into the systems of 18 or more UK universities in a campaign that lasted for several months and successfully penetrated the defences of at least one target.

The hackers tried to phish people with university log-ins in an attempt to learn their passwords. To make the emails look genuine, the group created several fake websites that looked similar to the originals.

Thematic ETFs are red-hot. Analysts assess the market’s newest darlings – CNBC

Thematic ETFs are trending.

From the numerous attempts to list a bitcoin ETF to the rise and plateau of cannabis-based funds, thematic ETFs have been growing in popularity for years. Lately, the focus has shifted to new-age technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, fintech and social media as well as social causes including environmental protection and civil rights.

According to Global X, which presides over a suite of thematic ETFs including the Global X Cloud Computing ETF (CLOU) and the Global X Robotics and Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ), assets under management in thematic ETFs are up 65% quarter over quarter.

"We really think thematic ETFs are here to stay," Todd Rosenbluth, senior director of ETF and mutual fund research at CFRA Research, told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday.

He highlighted the WisdomTree Cloud Computing Fund(WCLD), theFirst Trust NASDAQ Cybersecurity ETF(CIBR), Ark Invest's Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) andiShares Global Clean Energy ETF(ICLN) as just a few names that have recently seen interest from investors.

"They're not only a replacement for some of the sector ETFs you talked about, but if you're an old stock jockey, as I used to be as a financial advisor, these ETFs offer the benefits of diversification in a relatively low cost structure and one trade to be able to get 30, 40, 50 names to get your exposure," Rosenbluth said. "It's a really good concept."

Part of the appeal is also the ability to adjust your exposure according to your own views, Chris Hempstead, director of institutional business development at IndexIQ, said in the same "ETF Edge" interview.

"It's not always about artificial intelligence. It's not always about electronic vehicles and things like that. Sometimes thematic can also include a way to express an overweight or an underweight, in some cases, to a particular sector," Hempstead said.

"We talk about broad-based, passive indices like health care or energy," he said. "But if you want to overweight oncology, for example, you can find a thematic ETF that overweights those names."

Low-volatility or currency-hedged products can also be considered thematic, Hempstead said, pointing to his firm's ownIQ S&P High Yield Low Volatility Bond ETF(HYLV).

"That's also a thematic way of expressing your view in a broader index-based world," Hempstead said.

If anything, the recent success of Direxion's Work From Home ETF (WFH) proves that thematic ETFs are here for the long haul, Rosenbluth said.

Since its launch on June 25, WFH is up nearly 2% and has accrued nearly $62 million in assets under management.

"This is just three weeks old. It used to be [that] investors would wait three years before buying an ETF, and then they started going into it earlier once they got a look at the underlying holdings. Three weeks is really impressive," Rosenbluth said. "It's a sign that this ETF has certainly resonated with investors."

AWS And VW Open Industrial Cloud Project To Partners – CRN: Technology news for channel partners and solution providers

Automaker Volkswagen Group and cloud computing partner Amazon Web Services are opening up their industrial cloud project to other manufacturing and technology companies, with AWS Partner Network members ABB, ASCon, BearingPoint, Celonis, Drr, GROB-WERKE, MHP, NavVis, SYNAOS, Teradata and WAGO joining in the first cohort contributing software applications.

The Seattle-based AWS and Germanys VW announced a multi-year agreement in March 2019 to build the industrial cloud, a cloud-based digital production platform to help transform the automotive companys manufacturing and logistics processes using AWS cloud infrastructure and compute services and technologies including internet of things (IoT), machine learning and analytics. The goal is to digitize and connect production and logistics data at VWs 124 manufacturing plants to improve efficiencies and increase the quality of VW vehicles.

The opportunity for AWS to tackle industrial transformation or Industry 4.0 at a mega-scale with the leading automotive manufacturer is a formidable challenge, according to Dirk Didascalou, vice president of IoT at AWS (pictured above).

But then having the chance to open this up to the entire value chain, thats truly a transformative process, said Didascalou, who noted VW itself has 1,500 suppliers with 30,000 of their own factories. If you really want the overall industrial industry to benefit from the cloud, from new technologies and digitalization, the only way to do this is open, becausethe biggest impediment to industry transformation was the siloing. Making this an open architecture, inviting everybody to participate and benefit, will truly havethe macro-optimization that digitalization can bring to this industry.

Participating partners will contribute industrial software applications that will be available to individual VW plants via an app store-like approach to help optimize their operations.

In addition to AWS hyperscale and cloud capabilities, VW knew it needed other partners already in the automotive business in terms of manufacturing, level of use case capabilities and supply chain logistics, according to Nihar Patel, who works on strategy with VWs chief information officer as executive vice president of new business development for the Americas and Germany.

Our starting point has been our production systems, our manufacturing systems, so those partners who help us put the things together -- from stamping to robotics, to paint shops, paint booths, he said. Then as we broaden thattheres the whole value chain of incoming parts all the way until the vehicle departs.

Siemens, an AWS Advanced Technology Partner, has been an integration partner for the project since March 2019.

They are really great on the shop floor, they really understand how that works, Didascalou said, noting Siemens MindSphere product -- a cloud-based, open IoT operating system that connects customers products, plants, systems and machines and its factory automation capabilities.

Some of the new partners announced today already have been working with VW.

Now, to put them on to an AWS level of technology, activate that into our plantsand then scale it across the plants -- thats something we would always need, Patel said. This is the right time now to open it up, because weve done enough testing, weve done enough PDCA -- plan, do, check, adjustments. It was now time to start scaling with a few people and learn a little bit more before we take bigger steps later on.

Teradata, a San Diego cloud data and analytics company with industrial IoT experience, will be providing cloud-based data analytics to optimize VWs production processes and improve plant productivity.

Our cloud-based data and analytics solution provides comprehensive data intelligence and supports Volkswagen in fully leveraging the value of data in production to increase efficiency and quality, Sascha Puljic, vice president of Central Europe at Teradata, an AWS Advanced Technology and Consulting Partner, said in a statement.

One initial use case is leveraging the companys Teradata Vantage analytics platform to analyze data from VWs welding procedures in manufacturing to improve the production and quality of manufactured parts.

Zurich-based ABB, a provider of industrial robots and robot software, equipment and application solutions, said the VW partnership is vital to ensuring its industrial cloud solutions fulfill and exceed customer expectations.

We will combine our domain expertise and advanced analytics with the industrial cloud to enhance system overall equipment effectiveness, said Michael Larsson, managing director of automotive original equipment manufacturing for ABB Robotics. By predicting micro-stops, for example, we can help VW improve their productivity, quality and flexibility.

Miguel Milano, co-owner and chief revenue officer at Celonis, called his companys AI-enhanced process mining and process excellence software a game-changer that drives significant bottom-line value for the automotive industry across key processes in production, sales and marketing, finance, and supply chain and logistics.

We cant wait to deliver this value to all of Volkswagens lines of business, Milano said. Celonis is based in Munich and has U.S. headquarters in New York.

Since unveiling the industrial cloud project in March 2019, VW and AWS have put together use cases to find solutions to problems or challenges affecting VWs production system.

We were able to take AWS tools sets, configure them towards our VW requirements and then launch them into about three to four plants at the end of last year, Patel said. This year, we have a goal of going all the way across almost five times those numbers of use cases across five times the number of plants.

One use case was a digital shop floor management application, deployed in multiple VW plants, that helps plant operators and managers measure their equipments effectiveness.

Thats one of the key KPIs (key performance indicators) that you really want to understand in your manufacturing lines, Didascalou said.

AWS also developed an application for VW press shops, where steel is processed for vehicle body components, aimed at improving quality and throughput.

That was one of the most important agreements that we made -- that we dont first have a few years of platform development, that immediately we needed to create these use cases that deliver value for VW, Didascalou said. Thats the only way that you can prove what we build together delivers the actual business results, both for the factories themselves, but VW overall.

Other partners who join the industrial cloud effort whether its independent software vendors, hardware vendors or system integrators also can benefit from the applications created for the industrial cloud project. Development is under way for a marketplace for their industrial applications for use outside of Volkswagen.

They can make their capabilities available first for VW to get their digital production running, but then they could use the very same applications and use cases (so) their own manufacturing and their own supply chain is also getting the same benefits and improvements, Didascalou said.

Aerospace industry takes off in the Chihuahua desert – Border Report

CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (Border Report) The aerospace industry is flying high in Chihuahua despite COVID-19.

Forty-five American and European airplane and helicopter parts manufacturers now have a presence in the state, and Paris-based Safran just announced a $10 million expansion in the capital.

These factories churn out anything from turbines to landing-gear components, from airplane seats to life rafts and sliders. The industry now employs more than 60,000 workers in Mexico and most of that countrys $8 billion in aerospace exports wind-up in the United States.

Industry officials attribute the growth to various factors. Being close to the U.S. border cuts down on transportation costs. Automotive maquiladora suppliers have been able to adapt and serve the aerospace sector. And, above all, states like Chihuahua are getting good at developing a skilled labor force.

When I go recruiting companies in advanced manufacturing, they ask about land and infrastructure, of course. But the main concern is having a trained workforce, said Jerry Pacheco, president and CEO of the Border Industrial Association.

He said states like Chihuahua which borders Texas and New Mexico have a 50-year track record of working with U.S.-run maquiladoras and are getting very good at providing skilled employees for each industry.

Aerospace has taken off in Chihuahua for two main reasons: the supply base and that skilled labor force, Pacheco said. We have lots of young people with technical skills. And we have copper-wiring companies that supply the auto industry and that overlaps into aerospace. In essence, the aerospace industry is piggy-backing on the auto industry.

Mexican universities graduate thousands of engineers a year. But the bulk of the work remains manual. Vocational schools and training centers bear responsibility for making sure young people out of high school and older workers with limited schooling can use and service million-dollar machinery and reliably put together airplane fuselage.

Keep driving south on Mexican Highway 45 (the old Pan-American Highway) and you might miss the earth-toned buildings of an industrial park in the outskirts of Chihuahua City.

The park is home to half a dozen maquiladoras and Cenaltec, the state-owned Center for High Technology. Its an institution that prior to the pandemic was training an average of 2,500 workers per month.

We have lots of students from technical schools, but most are between 20 and 35 years old and are production workers, said center Director Aaron Olivas Ochoa. Many people work in maintenance or production lines. But when youre servicing a machine you need to know electricity, when youre working with helicopter rotors, you need very specific skills.

The center played a pivotal role in the Safran expansion. A company official earlier said one of the conditions for opening a new plant in Chihuahua City was for the state to provide trained workers.

The center resembles a maquiladora, with wide, open aisles and machines neatly spaced. Inside, instructors teach factory workers how to do plastic-injection molding, program tool and die machines and apply rivets to metal thatll become the body of an aircraft.

Olivas said he realizes that some people may find learning in a classroom difficult. Thats why the center is 80% hands-on.

We make sure they have the practice they need to be productive when they (step into) the plant. Otherwise, they might spend six months learning how to operate a machine, said Jorge Luis Fernandez, one of the instructors at Cenaltec.

If a worker applies the wrong amount of force on a mock airplane part, no one gets hurt and the worker just learned what to avoid the next time. Electrical pods give workers supervised training without the risk of electrocution or damaging an expensive machine at a factory.

On a corner of the building, Jose Ramiro Cedillo taught maquiladora worker Jorge Cano how to program a tool and die cutting machine.

The student seemed tentative at first, but quickly caught on.

Victor Acosta, another worker, watched from the sidelines.

Making airplane parts is a big responsibility. You must make a quality product and you feel proud knowing that what you make at the factory is used all over the world, Acosta said.

The Chihuahua City native said hes worked in maquiladoras since finishing school. We learn the processes before going on to the production line. They have very strict quality controls, he said.

Cedillo said hes been involved in worker training for several years. His students range from young Mexican engineers to skilled workers in California, Arizona and Texas.

All of us (instructors) have experience in the industry. What we do here is provide accelerated training programs in regards to machining, dimensioning, milling, turning, he said. They go from zero to being able to get the job done and move on to a higher salary.

Cenaltec officials say maquiladoras have donated many of their training machines and raw materials.

Some even bring their personnel for specialized training at the center, while others allow the trainees to complete their instruction at the plants, under the supervision of Cenaltec instructors.

The training can take anywhere from 25 hours for some certifications, to 350 hours to turn production-line workers into skilled aerospace manufacturing specialists. The state runs four campuses, one each in Chihuahua City, Juarez, Cuauhtmoc and Parral.

‘Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams’: Rendezvous with Kashmir’s Aerospace Girl – MENAFN.COM

FAIQA Anbreen is an aerospace engineer pursuing doctorate in Engineering and Mathematics in United States.

As a young girl fascinated by physics and mathematics, she made up her mind to be 'among stars' after watching televised crash of the celebrated Indian astronaut's space shuttle.

Her resolve to make a name in a male-dominated profession has already made Faiqa an inspiration for many youngsters back home.

In a candid chat with Kashmir Observer, the aerospace girl talks about her passion and profession.

Please tell us something about your current professional engagements and your academic journey?

Well, I'm a Ph.D. student in aerospace engineering and computational mathematics at California State University and Claremont Graduate University. I also work for Safran as a proposal engineer.

Safran is an international high-technology company catering to aviation, space and defense markets.

I did my initial schooling from Shiekhul Alam Islamic Model (SIM) School, Charari Sharief and later on joined Delhi Public School (DPS), Srinagar where I passed my Senior Secondary School Examination.

Both these schools had a constructive role in shaping up who I am today. SIM offered a decent environment to be able to ask questions but DPS offered more resources and a platform to develop a multi-dimensional personality.

Later on, I started my career at Amity University where I finished Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering, and then I came to US for Masters at California State University.

Aerospace is one of the toughest engineering streams, how did you get into it?

As a curious child, when someone used to ask me about my career goals, my response would be 'a scientist'.

When you start learning about great scientists like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, it gets quite fascinating to know how they came up with such complicated laws and equations. Only with time, one realizes that it takes an enormous effort and dedication to be a scientist.

I've always been interested in reading about planets, stars, and creation of the universe and would ask teachers questions to which sometimes they wouldn't even have answers.

In 2003, I watched space shuttle Columbia disintegrating on re-entry into the earth's atmosphere. Returning from a space mission, it took precious lives of six astronauts. It may sound counterintuitive that a disaster helped me shape up an idea in my head that I want to become an aerospace engineer.

Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian astronaut, got killed in that accident. Reading her biography has always been exciting. What she studied and how she reached NASA always intrigued me. It was this event that in some way helped me to decide and pursue Aerospace Engineering as a career choice.

But now, all the research I am doing is more motivated by working on something that furthers the aerospace technology and solve some of the unexplored problems of computational fluid dynamics.

Throughout your academic journey, what kept you motivated, focused and energized to keep going?

I feel as humans, we continue to keep finding the meaning of life. There's a curiosity and inquisition that keeps pushing you to know more about this universe and existence. And I consider science feeds to that curiosity within me.

Aerospace is all about physics and mathematics. Those things keep me interested and motivated.

I still sometimes go back to read Class 9 Physics textbook, where we start understanding physics at a detailed level. Physics is at the heart of the whole universe. The manifestations of the subject amaze me, from the order of the universe to the music; it keeps me glued to what I'm studying and what I want to do in the future.

Besides, I have always tried to be well-balanced in everything I do.

Data shows that there aren't many women in this area. So how does it feel to create a niche in a male-dominated field?

Taking up aerospace engineering after Class 12 was like jumping into a dark well. I didn't know anyone in this field I could consult, I hadn't checked any statistics. All I was doing was following my instincts and believing in myself. I always focused on the work rather than the difficulties and limitations.

I have had situations where I have been the only woman in a group of male engineers doing projects or working with them. This not only inspires me in many ways but also makes me realize that we should have more women in this field.

When I look back, I don't see many precedents among women to follow from Kashmir but I think there are a lot in the coming generation who have demonstrated enormous interest in the field who look up to me as a precedent. And I try my best to pass on my experiences to whoever approaches me.

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. What've you learned about yourself in this journey?

It's certain that we live life forwards but it's amusing that we learn and understand about life backwards.

When we look back at the phases of life we have lived, the reflections of those become the steps of the staircase of experiences we climb on, towards more meaningfulness. It has been a natural progression towards learning about sensitivities and human biases, only after being exposed by living on my own in foreign lands from the last 11 years.

The most important learning that I would like to share is being open to criticism. Thank your critics for they are the people who help you in becoming better and bigger.

Taking criticism is very hard and people usually get offended by it, but for me, I've only realized how important feedback is for personal as well as professional growth.

Also, we are unknowingly wrapped up in a number of biases and the whole struggle is to take yourself out of them one by one.

I see life in pieces. For a moment I live in those small pieces. And it's only when you look back, you're able to see what the journey was about.

You said since your childhood days you were keen about giving back to the society. How do you intend to do that now?

Well, my idea of giving back to humanity is to develop faster planes one day. It's one of my core interests.

I'm part of JK Scientists, an NGO run by Kashmiri scientists and professionals all over the world. Also, whenever I'm home, I try to be part of student outreach programs to interact with students and mentor them.

With all the work you've done, are you interested in going up in space one day?

I've always had this dream of traveling to space and wanting to be an astronaut.

But being an astronaut is like one in a million jobs which literally takes a lot of learning and experience to get selected. The work I have done so far is just the stepping stone, but to go to space one day I have a thousand miles to go. For now, it looks like a distant dream, but I will keep dreaming.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a woman in aerospace industry?

It's very important to have good self-esteem and to keep reminding yourself that you're not alone, and there're other women out there in diverse fields. You've to keep feeling it and be confident that you can compete with men at the same level.

That's a bit challenging when you talk in general terms but personally speaking, I haven't faced any challenges that I can count on. I've found great mentors and colleagues who I learn from every day and who've always been there to guide me through.

What's the most memorable opportunity you have had as an aerospace engineer?

Well, it was to work as a design engineer for A350 which is the latest Airbus aircraft. I have designed some parts which are flying onboard. I cherish that most memorable opportunity.

How long will it take for the aerospace industry to recover from the impacts of Covid-19?

As per the estimates by the aircraft manufacturing giants Airbus and Boeing, the aerospace industry is expected to recover by 2023.

Already, the pandemic has impacted the aerospace industry very badly. We are seeing grounding of fleets, thousands of planes that should be in the sky are lying on the tarmac. There is the cancellation of orders of new planes, slashing down of expected aircraft deliveries for this year, and retiring of old fleets like Boeing767.

Also, airlines around the globe are seeking help from the governments to avoid a potential collapse. The number of aircrafts in passenger service fell by more than 60 percent from the start of the year. It will take time to bring the production rate back to what should have been now.

Any word for people back home?

My interactions with Kashmiri students make me believe that children aren't allowed to pursue their dreams easily, especially girls.

Parents impose their opinions and career choices on their children without considering what talent and interest the child has.

Students should stay persistent with what they want to do in life. They must believe in themselves, and make the people around them believe in their talent. Don't give up easily on your dreams.

For parents out there, I would say believe in your children, empower and guide them by letting them learn on their own by experiencing and exploring.

Family is the one of the most important influences in a child's life and family support plays a significant role in our success as individuals and as members of the society.

Personally speaking, my parents especially my mother always supported me to do what I was passionate about.

For those who want to pursue a career in aerospace, I would say read and familiarize yourself with the field and understand what you are getting into. It is a very vast field and has a lot of opportunities to explore.

Aerospace jobs and supply chains across the UK will benefit from cutting-edge research and development projects announced today by the government and aerospace industry leaders.

Government grants totalling 200 million, delivered through the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) programme, will be matched by industry to create the total investment of 400 million in new research and technology, enabling ambitious projects to lift off and support the sectors recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

New projects set to receive funding will include developing high performance engines, new wing designs, ultra-lightweight materials, energy-efficient electric components, and other brand new concepts to enhance innovation within the sector. A project led by Williams Advanced Engineering in Oxford, for example, will develop ultra-lightweight seat structures that will reduce an aircrafts fuel consumption.

The funding will also secure highly-skilled jobs in the UKs aerospace sector and will benefit companies of all sizes from Caldicot in Wales to Bedlington in the North of England. Higher education institutions will also be a part of the projects, including the universities of Nottingham and Birmingham.

The funding was announced today by Business Secretary Alok Sharma at Farnborough Connect, the virtual version of Farnborough International Airshow.

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma said:

We have an incredible aerospace industry right here in the UK that defines the way aircraft are manufactured globally.

This 400 million ATI investment will help secure our world-leading position in developing new flight technology to make air travel safer and greener into the future.

The successful projects that will receive a share of the governments 200 million grant funding through the ATI programme, and match it with their own investment, include:

Stu Olden, Senior Commercial Manager for Defence, Aerospace & Emerging Markets at Williams Advanced Engineering, said:

A key benefit for us of the ATI support has been to enable accelerated development of the 3 companies involved in the consortium.

Additionally, by developing UK technologies and innovation, the ATI programme is enabling UK-based product development and, hopefully, future jobs. For Williams Advanced Engineering it has allowed us to participate in the aerospace sector as a non-traditional supplier.

During his speech today, the Business Secretary also announced the FlyZero initiative to kickstart exploration into zero-carbon emission commercial aircraft.

The FlyZero study will receive government funding and bring together around 100 experts to tackle issues involved in designing and building a commercially successful zero-emission aircraft. The study will create a strong basis for further research and development into a wide of technologies necessary for future flight, with the aim of securing future manufacturing in the UK.

This follows the launch of the Jet Zero Council, which brings industry and government together to make net zero emissions possible for future flights. The FlyZero study will feed into the work of the Council in defining and delivering this ambition.

Gary Elliott, Chief Executive of the Aerospace Technology Institute, said:

FlyZero represents an acceleration of the UKs ambition to lead the world in green aviation. These are challenging but also exciting times for the aerospace sector; we need to help UK companies to recover while also creating new approaches to technology development and innovation.

FlyZero will engage a team of highly-skilled engineers and technologists from across the UK to look into how to design and build a zero emission commercial aircraft, with the solid aim of securing future manufacturing in the UK.

The UK was the first major economy to commit to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and over the past decade, the UK has cut carbon emissions by more than any similar developed country. In 2019, UK emissions were 42% lower than in 1990, while our economy grew by 72%.

Projects approved by the ATIs rigorous assessment programme create opportunities to secure jobs in research and manufacturing across the UK as well as sharing knowledge across industry and academia.

While the commercial aerospace industry has been gravely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, all-electric aircraft offer companies within supply chains an option to aid recovery.
