BC’s opportunity to move toward watershed security – Policy Options

The world looks very different today than it did a few months ago, when the British Columbia government was in the midst of a review to modernize land use planning and resource management in the province. Since then, COVID-19 has ravaged public health and economies around the world.

How relevant are BCs land use planning efforts in this new reality? Research from our team at the University of Victorias POLIS Water Sustainability Project indicates that integrated land and water planning matter now more than ever in our changed world.

In BC, the COVID-19 crisis arrived at a time of mounting public and professional alarm about risks to our water and to public health and security. The increasing concern was punctuated by a scathing report from the BC Auditor General in 2019, which came on the heels of a number of other independent reviews on source water protection and watershed concerns.

How land and water are used, governed and protected is often at the nexus of the many dire and persistent challenges communities are increasingly facing. Water and healthy, functioning watersheds are the basis for satisfying our most fundamental needs, including drinking water, sanitation, food production, climate resilience and economic activity including tourism, resource extraction, and small business.

Across the nation, communities are beginning an unprecedented program of economic recovery that must support a transition to a more secure future. In this transition, water security will not be an optional consideration or simply nice to have. Rather, spending stimulus funding in watersheds alongside a focus on updating and modernizing how we manage, plan and govern our watersheds will be a crucial investment in long-term health and prosperity.

To support the BC governments interlinked commitments to modernize land use planning, reconciliation, rural economic recovery and climate change response, the POLIS team developed a comprehensive research program that reviews the past, present and future of land and water planning in BC. In addition to providing direct value to the provincial government, this research offers insights and a potential path for other regions across Canada and around the world looking to plan for a more resilient future.

Learning from past and emerging planning processes

In the 1990s formalized land use planning programs in BC were innovative by Canadian standards, with a focus on land-based resource development, multi-stakeholder processes and protected-area designations. However, these earlier planning regimes were limited in many ways. For instance, plans were generally highly focused on single sectors (such as forestry), with little or no integration with water resources or meaningful attention to governance.

More recently, land use and water planning in BC has advanced in fits and starts, generally as a diminishing political priority and mainly deployed as a specific tool in response to conflict and litigation by Indigenous nations. In an effort to address emerging concerns and fill planning gaps across the BC landscape, a diverse set of local bodies and authorities are leading and engaging directly in land and water planning processes. This more organic and bottom-up planning approach has resulted in a patchwork of different types of plans for land and water with varying scale, scope, implications and enforceability.

British Columbia is now in a period of innovation with a renewed commitment to planning, a range of new government-to-government agreements, Indigenous relationships more firmly at the centre in a partnership approach and several new collaborative land use and water planning approaches under way.

Recent and ongoing planning approaches and projects in BC from the Gitanyow Laxyip Land Use Plan to the Klappan Plan to the Nicola watershed pilot memorandum of understanding to emerging efforts in the Koksilah watershed are already demonstrating what is possible in a modernized, integrated, co-governed and adaptive regime.

A modernized planning framework

To support a shift from transactional and crisis-driven planning to an integrated and comprehensive modernized approach, our research sets out an overall planning framework for British Columbia. This framework consists of six design elements that can be adapted and tailored for individual local or regional land use plans to support meaningful steps forward.

A way forward

Our comprehensive review and investigation of land and water planning points to three main conclusions focused on BC but appropriate to any region facing the many challenges outlined here.

First, reconciliation and land use planning cannot be successful without explicit and sustained attention to water.

Second, economic recovery and a resilient local economy require certainty and clarity around resource development and investment potential including what can and cannot be done on the land and in the water which can be advanced through better planning and a credible process.

Third, to realize success, the provincial government and its planning partners need capacity and sustained support for a new planning regime. In addition, government must prioritize implementation of innovative water planning policy tools.

The pandemic and the ensuing economic chaos are tragic. However, these immediate threats do not mitigate the amplifying effects of climate change and degraded watersheds. While BC must follow through with its commitment to modernize land use planning and the work initiated before the pandemic, this unprecedented time is also offering powerful lessons about what we might want a post-COVID world to look like, as we start down the long road of building back better.

Evolution Debut Ground Breaking New Title Instant Roulette Multi-wheel – Inkedin

Evolution Gaming, a live casino provider, premiered its exclusive Instant Roulette multiwheel on Thursday, the newest addition to its already plentiful games collection.

The groundbreaking new title was first revealed at the ICE London conference and exhibition event this year. It joins the vast collection of Live Roulette variants that Evolution provides, including Lightning Roulette, Virtual Roulette, and more.

The new Instant Roulette game features 12 individual and synchronised Auto Roulette wheels that spin sequentially with balls dropping into the wheels one after another.

It should also be noted that the latest roulette title from Evolution allows players to play at a speed that best suits them, as they have unlimited betting time before they decide to press the Play Now button. It makes the game substantially different from other roulette games in the library of Evolution, as well as other live casino providers catalogues.

As players place their bets, they get an almost immediate outcome as the wheel nearest to the balls next drop is selected instantly as the wheel on which the bet is put.

The new Instant Roulette game follows the rules of the regular Roulette game, but was specifically designed to put players in charge and allow them to play at the speed they choose in a Live Casino environment.

Commenting on their latest Instant Roulette offering, Evolution Gaming Chief Product Officer Todd Haushalter said they just wanted to allow players to monitor their game s speed in a manner similar to what the RNG experience provides but with the trustworthiness of the live.

Mr. Haushalter went on to say that the game offers players a chance to take as much time as they want to set up their bets and then when theyre ready they can push the Play Now button and boom, they re playing right there on the next available wheel.

Instant Roulette is the newest update in the thrilling roadmap for Evolution 2020. The announcement of the companys new game of roulette follows the official release of the game show called Crazy Time.

As with Instant Roulette, at this years ICE London gathering, Evolution gave a first look at Crazy Time. Crazy Time is a multi-layered, bonus- and multiplier-packed game designed to add incredible value to the increasingly growing genre of Evolution game shows.

The most distinguishing aspect of the title is a spinning money wheel with four bonus bet spots acting as portals in four fun bonus games, with those four being Cash Hunt, Coin Flip, Pachinko, and Crazy Time.

Happy anniversary, Curiosity! NASA rover marks 8 years on Mars – Space.com

NASA would be thrilled if its newly launched Mars rover ended up matching its predecessor's longevity.

The agency's car-sized Curiosity rover celebrates eight (Earth) years on the Red Planet today (Aug. 5), less than a week after the Perseverance rover took flight toward Mars.

The synergy in timing is appropriate; Perseverance shares Curiosity's chassis and "sky crane" landing strategy, among other features. And the new rover will build upon the many discoveries that Curiosity has made over the years.

Related: Amazing Mars photos by NASA's Curiosity rover (latest images)

Curiosity launched in November 2011 and touched down inside the 96-mile-wide (154 kilometers) Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5, 2012, kicking off a surface mission designed to last at least one Martian year (which is equivalent to 687 Earth days).

The main goal of Curiosity's $2.5 billion mission, officially known as Mars Science Laboratory, involves assessing whether Gale could ever have supported Earth-like life. The nuclear-powered robot has returned exciting news on this front, finding that the crater hosted a potentially habitable lake-and-stream system for long stretches in the ancient past, perhaps millions of years at a time.

Curiosity has also detected complex organic chemicals, the building blocks of life as know it, in Gale Crater rocks. In addition, the rover has rolled through several plumes of methane and discovered a seasonal pattern in the concentration of this gas, which here on Earth is primarily produced by living organisms. (Abiotic processes can generate methane as well, however, and the source of the stuff within Gale is unclear.)

In September 2014, Curiosity reached the base of Mount Sharp, which rises 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) into the sky from Gale's center. For the past six years, the rover has been climbing through the mountain's foothills, reading the rocks for clues about Gale's past habitable environments and how Mars transitioned into the cold, dry desert planet we know today.

During its eight years on Mars, Curiosity has drilled 27 rock samples, scooped up six soil samples and put more than 14 miles (23 km) on its odometer, NASA officials said. (The Mars surface-distance record is held by another NASA rover, Opportunity, which covered 28.06 miles, or 45.16 km, between 2004 and 2018.)

Perseverance's $2.7 billion mission, called Mars 2020, aims to extend Curiosity's findings. The new rover will hunt for signs of ancient life in Mars' 28-mile-wide (45 km) Jezero Crater, which was home to a lake and a river delta long ago.

Perseverance will also collect and cache samples for future return to Earth and test out several new exploration technologies, including a tiny helicopter named Ingenuity and an instrument that generates oxygen from the thin, carbon dioxide-dominated Martian atmosphere.

Mars 2020 is scheduled to touch down on Feb. 18, 2021. Maybe Curiosity will take a short break from its work in Gale Crater that day, look up at the Martian sky, and send well wishes to the new arrival.

Equity means including Black Detroiters in the arts, too | Opinion – Detroit Free Press

Nate Wallace Published 10:00 a.m. ET Aug. 1, 2020 | Updated 1:13 p.m. ET Aug. 1, 2020

Patrons stop to look at and take a picture with the "Officer of the Hussars" painting by Kehinde Wiley a part of the Contemporary Art after 1950 collection a at the Detroit Institute of Arts photographed on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Kimberly P. Mitchell/Detroit Free Press (Photo: Kimberly P. Mitchell, Kimberly P. Mitchell/DFP)

I remember vividly walking through the Detroit Institute of Arts six years ago and finding myself face to face with Kehinde Wileys inimitable work, "Officer of the Hussars."It is an enormous, masterful painting, in which Wiley swapped the stereotypical white Napoleonic European cavalry officer for a Black man mounted on the same horse. He sits in a white athletic tank top, jeans and Timberland boots, wielding a sabre, looking back confidently at the viewer from the rearing horse. I stood for a few minutes, taking in the painting, when a young Black boy, maybe 10 or 12 years old, and his mother walked up to the painting. I watched him as he scanned the huge piece, and looked up at his mother to ask, Why is he on the horse?

Wileys painting centers a Black man in a place hes not traditionally been depicted or included. Its a fitting metaphor for where we find ourselves now, in the middle of a historic racial reckoning following the killing of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, which has forced many people to consider what kind of Detroit they want to live in, and how to re-imagine it.

Nate Wallace(Photo: Noah Stephens)

A new report from Knight Foundation and the Urban Institute has shown that access to the arts is a critical component in creating lasting and deep attachments to our communities. Access to the arts boosts civic engagement, raises resident satisfaction, and even encourages personal investment of money and time back into the community, which is true for Detroit. But the data also shows racial and economic disparities when it comes to who feels they have easy access to arts in their community, suggesting significant barriers to equal, shared benefits of such amenities. We see these barriers right now in our city.

From boardrooms, to leadership, to programming, arts and culture institutions cannot seem to hire, appoint, retain or reach Blacks, who are 80% of Detroits residents. If there is an unwillingness to do the intentional work around equity, both in and outside institutional walls, it stifles the possibilities of our community. Our city has talented Black artists, curators, programmers and leaders. But soft statements of solidarity or quotable platitudes deflect from the systemic issues we must wrestle with in order to move towards real change. In order to create a more inclusive local arts community, Detroit's arts and cultural institutions must first examine their own hiring practices, boards of directors and organizational cultures.

This Knight-Urban report, Community Ties: Understanding what attaches people to the place where they live, reminds us of what an equitable arts and culture ecosystem could look like in Detroit, and more importantly, what we deny ourselves when its not. Addressing inequity is work that has to be intentional with no room for ambiguous language and broad-stroke terminology. Hiring more executives and leaders of color, diversifying the donor base, investing in spaces that are closer and more accessible to Black communities and other communities of color, and implementing programs that integrate arts and cultural institutions with the community, is the best path forward.

Findings from the report provide opportunities for Detroits arts and cultural institutions to create a more inclusive and equitable arts community. I believe we can work towards re-imagining a city where a little Black boy is used to seeing himself not only in artwork, but as a program director, curator or museum leader.

In front of Wileys painting, the boys mother answered her sons question about why a Black man was riding a horse like that, in a painting like this. His mom looked down at him, smiled, and said, "Because hes supposed to be.

Royal Caribbean CEO updates on resuming cruises, President’s cruise, which ships will sail first and more – Royal Caribbean Blog

Royal Caribbean International President & CEO Michael Bayley spoke to travel advisors on a webinar and spoke on a number of commonly asked topics surrounding the current situation and the cruise line's recovery.

Mr. Bayley spoke for an hour on a varietyof questions that travel agents had submitted prior to the webinar related tothe timing and plans to resume cruises.

The questions were all about the current situation Royal Caribbean is facing in the midst of no sailings and the global health crisis.

A few hours before the webinar, Royal Caribbean announced they had cancelled more cruises, extending their voluntary suspension of cruises through October 31, 2020.

Mr. Bayley indicated that Royal Caribbean is "actively engaged" in the Healthy Sail Panel working on a healthy return to service plan.

He then went on to say that the combination of the CDC requesting public feedback, along with the submission of Royal Caribbean's return to service plan is one of the reasons why there needed to be another month of cancelled cruises.

"We think it's going to take obviously some time for back and forth with with the CDC when they see the full detail of the plan, and they've received all of the public comment."

Another question raised was which ships might start up first, and it looks like Royal Caribbean is still looking at short sailings to begin the return to service.

"I think when we resume service, our thinking is that will probably we'll probably start with short product, Perfect Day, and that'll be the how we'll start phasing in operations."

In addition, Mr. Bayley said during an employee-only call, he is committed to the idea of starting with an employee-only sailing in order to test out the new protocols.

"I said that the first cruise that we will operate through, Royal Caribbean International, will be an all employee cruise, a little bit like a shakedown cruise, because then we can test and take a look at in real-life operations all of the protocols that we're putting into place. And so our first cruise is going to be an employee cruise."

Ultimately, Royal Caribbean wants to ensure when they resume cruises, they do it the right way.

A lot of this is going to be about trust.

Mr. Bayley reiterated a notion conveyed by different Royal Caribbean executives that they want to start cruising again once it makes sense, and not just for the sake of starting up.

"We would never want to resume service unless we were incredibly confident that we could create an environment that was healthier and safer than the environment from which people were coming."

"I think that's really why we're being really thoughtful and taking our time on creating all of the protocols that we we hope we will introduce when they're ready to be introduced."

Included in today's announcement that Royal Caribbean would cancel its sailings through October is the 2020 President's Cruise has also been cancelled.

Mr. Bayley lamented the fact there will not be a sailing this year, but did say he hopes to announce a new sailing for 2021.

"We haven't yet decided when we'll do the 2021 President's Cruise, but we certainly will do it."

"So we'll probably announce in the coming weeks when the next President's Cruise will be."

Some good news is the fact that Royal Caribbean is nearly complete with repatriating crew home.

Mr. Bayley said Royal Caribbean is about 97-98% complete, with some crew facing "unbelievable restrictions".

"One of the positive things that's happened in the past few weeks was that theCDC approved our accruing No Sail order plansand converted many of the ships of Royal Caribbean international and Celebrity to what's called the green code, which means that for 28 days or longer, none of those ships have had any COVID on them whatsoever."

"That green code designation means that the the ability to use commercial air, which which makes logistics a lot simpler."

The big cruise news this week has been smaller European cruise lines have attempted to restart cruising, but have already experienced COVID-19 outbreaks on their ships. This has many questioning what impact it will have on Royal Caribbean's ability to restart sailings.

"It's unfortunate, I think also it just shows it shows what a complex challenge this is."

"It's also interesting that what hasn't been reported is that both TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd, which are larger cruise brands, have been operating now, I think, TUI has now done four cruises without any incident"

Despite the fact that smaller lines will operate in a different way than Royal Caribbean, it is provides a good learning experience to overcome these challenges.

"The last thing we want to do is to return to service and get it wrong. And I think and I think our customers and our travel partners really do expect to get it right. And that's our focus."

Beats from the Underground | Art Beat – North Coast Journal

The artist known as Knox the Dog just dropped a mixtape tailored to sync with the 1988 sci-fi epic Akira and it could scarcely arrive at a better time. Anime and electronica fans have been starved for diversion since the pandemic hit, and Knox's new release, Akita, brings the sustenance they crave.

Akira, the landmark anime classic directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is a graphic tour de force that set a new standard for hyper-kinetic, nearly wordless storytelling when it came out. Akita updates the film's original soundtrack with a mostly contemporary tracklist of curated bangers. Its title subs a "k" for the original's "r," turning a proper noun into a Japanese dog breed. Otomo's delirious vision of a post-nuclear, cyberpunk Neo-Tokyo circa 2019 now unfolds to an expertly sequenced playlist of reggae, dub and electronica tracks that mingle frosty nihilism with hedonism to make you dance.

Knox the Dog is a nom de turntable for Arcata-based DJ Brian Curtis, aka Pandemonium Jones, whose work behind the wheels of steel is known to local listeners through his regular pre-pandemic sets at Richards' Goat and the weekly show "Mixed Messages" he hosted on the late, lamented KHSU. Knox notes unexpected synchronicities and "layers of contextual meaning" among Akita's side effects, reporting: "Unsurprisingly, it's fun while high."

Synchronicities do compel attention from Akita's opening moments, when the first notes of the Upsetters' "Underground" chime out in sync with the ominously flashing buttons that initiate the film's action. Its initial scenes unfold against that disarmingly measured sonic backdrop, amplifying discordant vibes already latent in the spacey reverberations. Tracks pair up with scenes in ways that sound entirely right in the moment, even if they seem counterintuitive on paper.

Brilliantly creepy episodes in the film's second half that pinpoint the pathology of its nameless fascist state within the dysfunction of its ruling nuclear family (sound familiar?) are now paired with tracks by Big Youth ("Children Children") and Atomic Dog ("Natural Born Killers"). Meanwhile the psychedelic metamorphoses experienced on screen by an elite cadre of telekinetic psychics are now scored to Remarc's "Thunderclap," DJ Rashad ("I'm Gone") and the shivery tones of Rob & Goldie's "The Shadow (Process Mix)." Cuts from the original soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashiroguni, heavy on gamelan percussion and themes from Noh theater, appear near the film's beginning and close it as well.

It's the summer of 2020, and pairing these classic anime images with contemporary sounds updates the experience with unsettling new inflections. The iconic red motorcycle ridden in Akira by iconoclast biker and freedom fighter Shtar Kaneda bears corporate logos for American and Japanese brands, including Citizen and Canon, as well as the insignia of the U.S. Air Force. Projecting a future United States of America whose economic power and global prestige are ranged in opposition to the forces of fascism might have been a no-brainer in 1988, but watching Akita now is a reminder of how much things have changed.

Otomo's paranoid projection of a 2019 dystopia looks more and more like social realism. Maybe that's why it feels like the culture is on the cusp of an Akira moment right now, with an electronica soundtrack remix from Bwana called "Capsule's Pride" released in 2016, an Akira-themed Kanye West video ("Stronger") from 2018 and a hotly anticipated live-action adaptation from director Taika Waititi scheduled for release in May of 2021.

It's undeniably weird to be watching an animated Japanese film about people fighting in the streets against the paramilitary forces of a fascist state at a time when the American news cycle is filled with similar images of protesters battling federal agents in the streets of Portland, Austin, Seattle and Washington D.C. The contemporary voices of Vince Staples, Young Thug, Fatima Al Quadiri, FKA Twigs, Tinashe and others seem to acknowledge this dissonance as they emerge from the sonic textures of Knox's mix. These voices constitute a gnomic chorus that provides a running commentary on current events, a compilation of the alternately dazed and frenzied chants, spells, threats and exhortations the moment deserves.

You can get your paws on this mixtape in multiple ways: watch on Veoh, listen on Mixcloud, download via WeTransfer, or buy a cassette or USB drive on Bandcamp. The USB that ended up on my desk came in a sleek little box featuring original album art and a jaunty, suggestively shaped pink cap for the dongle.

Newcastle West End: Elswick to Newburn | Art and design – The Guardian

In 1987, aged 20, I returned to Newcastle, having been away for four years. I needed somewhere to live and I ended up taking the keys to a two-bedroom upstairs Tyneside flat in Scotswood for the huge sum of 29 a week. It was film or rent, and I chose film.

Above, children racing their motorbikes, Lemington 1992. Right, a performing dog, Fenham, 1989. Far right, children with a rock Salmon, Fenham, 1989. Below, children playing in the remains of the Robin Adair pub, Scotswood Road, 1989

Even in its heyday, the West End of Newcastle, and Scotswood especially, had always had a certain reputation for its poverty and deprivation, most notoriously as the home to the child killer Mary Bell back in the 1960s. But by the mid- to late-1980s it had been hit extremely hard by the waves of deindustrialisation that had closed down most of Armstrongs munitions works, the areas biggest employer, that ran all the way from Elswick to Scotswood along Scotswood Road, heading west out of Newcastle.

In September 1991, the West End of Newcastle was hit by riots that spread across Tyneside after two joy-riders died in a police chase on the Coast Road at Wallsend to the east of Newcastle. By comparison to events such as Handsworth or the Broadwater Farm riots, the rioting was pretty subdued, but it still resulted in the burning out of the post office on Armstrong Road where Id photographed women queuing to cash their child benefit cheques four years earlier.

Despite being largely forgotten, these riots caused ructions among policymakers and politicians because of their nihilism lacking the ready-causes such as the institutionalised racism Leslie Scarman addressed in the wake of the Brixton and Toxteth riots in the early 1980s. The causes of these riots were structural to the Thatcherite project that no fact-finding visits by Michael Heseltine were going to address adequately. We are still living with the consequences three decades later.

Top, upstairs on the No 1 bus, Rye Hill, 1989. Above, anti-poll tax graffiti, Scotswood, Newcastle, 1990. Right, Michael Heseltine visits Scotswood in 1992 in the wake of the rioting that occurred there in September 1991. Far right, child benefit day, Scotswood post office, 1988.

Most of the pictures in this series were shot incidentally as Id go for a walk, go get the bus, or just live my life rather than as a specific project. It has resulted in a broad survey of the historical, political and economic changes that my home region has undergone; and these photographs are simply one strand of a much wider, more polemical essay charting my own responses to those changes.

Living there for nine years was often surreal, as twocked and burnt cars became so common that it took something interesting such as a Mini stuffed down the steps of the Old Scotswood station to register as a bit unusual.

Top, children playing in the remains of the Scotswood post office after it went up in flames during riots in 1991. Above, Lemington in the snow, 1985. Right, a view from a bridge, Lemington 1992.

I moved from Scotswood in 1996, having lived there for 9 years. The area was in seemingly terminal decline as the anti-social behaviour grew, and my old street was finally flattened in the early 2000s, despite the tens of millions of pounds that had been pumped into the area in the wake of the rioting.

Jeremy Deller, an artist, wanted to be photographed in a Coronation Street setting. Although Robert Street in Scotswood, where I was living at the time, was not exactly like Salford, all we had to do was go out of my front door for a suitably northern location, where we proceeded to photograph each other. Technicolor was still several years off and the north of England really felt black and white in those days.

The lower part of Scotswood and Benwell, above Scotswood Road, is currently being redeveloped as part of a large public/private initiative to build housing and attract people back to the area. If it can rid itself of the stigma of poverty and deprivation that blighted the area for many years, it does have a lot going for it, such as wonderful views across the Tyne valley and great transport links being close to the A1, which runs north/south, and the A69, which runs east/west.

Mark Pinder is a documentary and editorial photographer living near Newcastle upon Tyne. He is currently working on a book and exhibition project with the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland exploring the political and social history of his home region. His book Newcastle West End: Elswick to Newburn is available from Cafe Royal Books.

Cosmo Jarvis on The Shadow of Violence, His Acting Process, and Title Changes – The Film Stage

One of my favorite films from last years Toronto International Film Festival, The Shadow of Violence (renamed from its UK release title Calm with Horses) has finally arrived stateside. A critical darling with enough momentum for Saban Films to reward it with an exclusive theatrical window despite the COVID-19 shutdown, you have to wonder if it might find its way to the eyes of Oscar voters looking for screeners now that the field is wide open with rule changes and postponements.

If nothing else they need to watch it to make certain that star Cosmo Jarvis performance isnt left out of the conversation. A career-making turn just a couple years after being introduced internationally in Lady Macbeth, the US-born Englishman provides Arm the complexity and pathos to earn our empathy from the first frame.

The following is our email conversation with Jarvis about his process, acting partners, and a character that wears his heart and pain on his sleeve.

The Film Stage: Howdid your casting in The Shadow ofViolence come about? And what attracted you to the project whether ColinBarretts original short story, Joe Murtaghs script, Nick Rowlands vision asa first-time feature director?

Cosmo Jarvis: ShaheenBaig, the casting director, had cast me before in a movie called Lady Macbeth, but, just in general, shesalways working on interesting stuff. I remember reading the script and admiringthe character of the language Joe used and his dedication to honoring the feelof the place and its inhabitants.

Ive met Arms [hischaracter]. I remember looking forward to whittling away at Arm and beingexcited that a character like him had been written [along with] the archetypalnature of the story. Also Nick was my age and so was the producer Dan Emmersonand it really felt, even in the early days, like this could be somethinginteresting. It felt like a mission that would be great to be on. Nicksattention to emotion, his care for his actors and love for the story was clearin the audition room. I got a callback and then did another and yeah.

You packed on muscleand adopted what your cast-mates call a pitch-perfect Irish accent, but whatwas your mental process like digging into an emotionally and psychologicallycomplex character such as Arm with all the trauma hes experienced and carriesupon his shoulders?

Mentally, I found it to be a case of minimizing futureprojections and past reflections and just sort of trying to get on with thingsin their immediacy with very little thought put anywhere other than what washappening. I knew there was a reason why Arm wasnt able to see what seemed tobe happening to himdespite the shouts from his beloved around him. I tried toreside in that head.

How did shooting onlocation in the west of Ireland help shape the character especially consideringyou were an Englishman within an Irish cast?

I learned a great deal whilst researching there. Theresnowhere like Ireland. I interacted with as many Irish people as I could andjust generally lived. There is a kind of character alive in Irelands peopleand a musicality that is just unique. It was great having so many people totalk to in the crew and in the towns where we shot.

Yours is a year-bestperformance for me thats so heartbreaking to watch as a whole, but the scenesyou share with Niamh Algar as your ex-girlfriend Ursula really stick outbecause they allowas her character saysfor Douglas to peak through Armsfaade. How was it working with her to construct their affectingly tragicshared history?

Amazing. Naimh is some force breathing stark, unfiltered, brutal life and logic into everything and every crack in the space around her.We spent a lot of time together before shooting to establish a feeling of thehistory between them. We sort of had a bunch of good, easy times as Ursula andArm would certainly have had to form that familiarity and the comfort they havewith each other. Drinking beers and chatting shite by the lake. Just beinghuman, etc.

What was it likeshooting that final telephone call with her in a long take focused solely onyour emotional reaction in saying congratulations and goodbye? The simultaneousshow of pride in her accomplishment, hope in your familys future, and anguishin knowing you wont be with them is unforgettable.

Ursula (Naimh) was in the same room with us delivering herperformance with Arm off camera, which was brilliant and kept it real. Our crewwas amazing and everyone was just ace. As usual Nick was at the helm observingand gently guiding the proceedings. I dunno what to say, really. When I firstread the script that scene had stuck with me, I felt I understood it. Greatcrew we had in that room.

One could say you arethe Ursula to Barry Keoghans Dympnathe single real(ish) relationship he hasbeyond the true nightmares that are his uncles. What was it like toeing thatline between friendship and subservience with his character, knowing compassionstill exists beneath the obvious utility? Juggling loyalty against humanity andmorality?

With regard to this matterI learned a great deal about Armfrom the script [and] his interactions with Dympna. The sort of person Armwould have to be to keep going forward with Dympna as he does. I concluded thatArm just doesnt consider the flavors of hierarchy in Dympnas actions to beanything alarming. Arm just sees Dympna, this amazing confident character, assomeone whos willing to associate with him. A friend. That wonderful unhingedfriend we all have or perhaps are.

Ive met many groups of people who consider themselvesfriends with each other, but one party clearly has more interest to plan ormaintain the structure of the groups activities and momentum than the otherpartyeventually leading the other party, by default, to end up just going alongwith flow of activity. This utility (good choice of word by theway) can sometimes only be observed and acknowledged from an outside party. Itis possible for the accused propagator of this arguably one-sided arrangementto be subjectively and sincerely innocent in his/her influence on the otherparty because they themselves truly have no wider context. The other party hasno objections.

Dympnas mum makes Dypmna and Arms and Hectors breakfast.Dympna does the talking. Arm does the threatening. Its like if Im the friendwho brings the beer and youre the friend whos house were at: No big deal. Soif Dympna was raised in this cycle of the Devers family model and Glenbeigh(the setting) was small in sizeif Arm had been with the Devers for some time,I thought his friendship with Dympna, warts and all, would be the onlyfriendship with Dympna that Arm could know. A spade with cracked wood along itsshaft and rust on its blade is still a spade.

Whats your opinionon the title change for America from Calmwith Horses to The Shadow of Violence? There seems to be such a huge disparity between the optimism and hope of theformer as it deals with your characters son and the potential for healing andthe nihilism of the latter as an all-consuming darkness Arm will never be ableto escape.

I remember refusing to watch This Spinal Tap for many years because the title, just the words, conveyed the sentiment of badly lit horror movies with blood that is way toolight red from the early 80s. I admit that was my own precursory illusion. WhenI [finally] watched Spinal Tap, Ifell in love with it and the title seamlessly morphed into the only truereflection of the movies sentiment that I could imagine henceforth. In the end, however, I am aware that I am working in an industry.I know certain territories may react better, commercially, to certain stimulior language, but in catering to this, or our idea of this, do we hijackeveryones ability to adapt?

The Shadow of Violence is currently in limited theatrical release.

Don’t Look Back in Anguish: Post-narrative Nostalgia in the work of Stefan Zweig – Varsity Online

Archie Hamerton

Tragically overlooked in favour of the Hemmingways, Eliots, and big players of 1930s literature, Stefan Zweigs writing remains mawkishly enticing, and incontestably doomed from the outset. Despite the bourgeois gentility his World of Yesterday, there is a pervasive sense of grave predestination in Zweigs writing: he created a damned reality, with its cultural paradise of the upper-middle class self-indulgently deluding itself to the rise of totalitarianism.

Set predominately among comfortable society of fin de sicle Europe, his works consistently negate to mention the rise of the right, and instead fondly mourn for a European past historical even to him; he turns away from the conventional, plot-driven narratives of contemporaneity, in favour of a deeply sentimental style of writing, that relies heavily on memory and anecdote to recall world that has arguably ended long before he has even begun writing it: the late Nineteenth Century through the eyes of a writer in the midst of the Twentieth.

"His naivety is doomed from the outset"

The readers knowledge of the looming second world warand indeed the characters ignorance to itprovides an equivocal and non-negotiable answer to a question that Zweig is resolutely decided to keep asking. His works wonder if the old Halcyon days of coffee houses and spa town retreats will return, if old charm and manners will replace what he perceives as vulgarity, if literature and art will continue to flourish. No, comes the resounding answer from the rise of fascism. Zweig writes predominately in the late thirties and early forties, when Nazism was in full control, meaning the naivety with which his texts believe in the untoppleable cultural Europeanness is misguided and doomed from the outset.

His is a spectral grimness, always with the threat of the endbe it of the sentence, the plot, or even lifelooming. His works often take the form of recounted stories: our protagonist functions as little more than an active listener, a framing device to open and close the book. They typically begin with Protagonist A, a sort of authorial parallel for Zweig, stating something along the lines of I was sitting in a caf with Protagonist B when she told me this story, that I set down now exactly as it was told to me.

Even the recounted story is recounted once again to us; the narrative ended long ago for Protagonist B to be looking back anecdotally on it; and the meeting of Protagonists A and B also happened long enough ago for A to have translated it into the written record the reader is holding. In short, the story is tangible proof of its own end and place in the past, Zweigs own sword of Damocles. It is perhaps understandable that Zweigs writing functions as a large inspiration for Wes Andersons The Grand Budapest Hotel, a similarly nostalgic film that uses the Matryoshka format to create an atmosphere of sentimentality.

"The stories have an innate grace, wealth, and splendour that could only belong to the turn of the century"

This predestined end is due, in part, to the Europeanness of his works. His characters meet in literary salons or grand hotels, historic universities or riviera guesthouses. They are stories steeped in a sort of innate grace, wealth, and splendour that could only belong to the turn of the century in his beloved Europe, the last vestiges of Victoriana; for a Europe that by the time he writes, is long since decimatedthis fondness for a lost Europe leads one to wonder why his popularity hasnt soared, post-Brexit: the other day a tweet from Cameron in 2015 resurfaced, the replies exhibiting a retroactive dread reminiscent of Zweigs stories.

In having the stories recounted and retold by their now aged, nostalgic protagonists looking back with regret or longing, we are made aware of their ending: the central figure is alive and likely miserable. Confusionbegins with a now celebrated lecturer mournfully looking back on his student days and his relationship with an English professor; but from the immediate tone of unease and the lone nature of the character, the love affair of the novel is already tainted with misery, doomed by the innate melancholy of anecdotal format.

In doing so Zweig rejects the conventions of narrativeplot, surprise, and hopeand favours the melancholic plotless nihilism that seems to inspire postmodernism: he is arguably writer of atmosphere, not narrative, a progenitor of the postmodern stylings and yet in a distinctly historic fashion. These little episodes often span no more than a year, a month, even a single day24 Hours in the Life of a Womana notable example, in which the sparse events of the book (a woman witnesses a man gamble, and offers to pay for a hotel) chronologically take up only 24 hours, and yet the anecdotal retelling, and the haunting regrets span almost a lifetime.

This is perhaps most poignantly mirrored in Zweig himself: cast out like an exile from his beloved Europe, and turned into a macabre parody of The Wandering Jew pastiche, finally settling and dying in south America, as his homeland falls to fascism. The fateful, fatal war is ominously present in all his writing: his Europe, his fictionalised selfboth ignorant and hyper awarehaunted by the rise of Nazism, and his own eventual death. In his works, he toys with disappointment, the omen-like knowledge of the present, to depict the sentimental world of the past with a sort of grim naivety as it steps into sepia obscurity.

Jordan Peterson infected with COVID-19 while in Serbian hospital – report – msnNOW

Video - MagicTalk; Image - Getty. Watch: Jordan Peterson shares his take on gender issues in New Zealand.

A controversial Canadian professor who gained fame rallying against political correctness has reportedly been infected with COVID-19 while staying in a Serbian hospital for over-reliance on drugs.

Dr Jordan Peterson, who shot to fame in 2016 after featuring in several highly-viewed videos where he discussed political correctness, flew to Russia earlier this year after developing a dependency on prescription drugs, The Sun reports.

Speaking to the British outlet, Mikhaila Peterson said her dad had contracted COVID-19 while seeking further treatment in a Serbian hospital where he was recovering from an over-reliance on Benzodiazepine.

She said he was put on a lot of antiviral drugs, which she didn't believe was necessary as he only had mild symptoms. The daughter also revealed he was suffering from pneumonia, which he had fought earlier this year.

"And so now we've had a step back in his recovery. Life is just not good, things are not good right now," she said.

"He'll get better, but he's definitely taken a step back and it's just really unfortunate... it's been a disaster."

Last year, Mikhaila posted a nine-minute video about her father's issues with anti-anxiety medication Clonazepam, which Healthline says is used to treat panic disorder.

He was prescribed the drug after becoming stressed when his wife was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo several operations.

To try and wean himself off the drug, Jordan checked himself into a New York rehabilitation centre.

He shared the video in September saying: "At least life isn't dull".

Dr Peterson is also known for his self-help book 12 Rules for Life. While in New Zealand in 2019, he criticised gender quotas and moves to allow sex markers on birth certificates to be changed.

Among his controversial opinions are the views that women wear makeup in the workplace to be sexually provocative, white privilege is a "Marxist lie" and people shouldn't have to comply with what gender pronouns others wish to be called by.

RadNet and Hologic Announce Collaboration to Advance the Development of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Breast Health – GlobeNewswire

LOS ANGELES and MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Aug. 06, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- RadNet, Inc. (Nasdaq: RDNT), a national leader in providing high-quality, cost-effective, fixed-site outpatient diagnostic imaging services, and Hologic, Inc. (Nasdaq: HOLX), an innovative medical technology company primarily focused on improving womens health, have entered into a definitive collaboration to advance the use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) in breast health.

As the world leader in mammography, Hologic will contribute capabilities and insights behind its market-leading hardware and software, and will benefit from access to data produced by RadNets fleet of high-resolution mammography systems, the largest in the nation, to train and refine current and future products based on A.I. RadNet will share data from its extensive network of imaging centers, as well as provide in-depth knowledge of the patient pathway and workflow needs to help make a positive impact across the breast care continuum. The collaboration will enable new joint market opportunities and further efforts to build clinician confidence and develop and integrate new A.I. technologies.

We believe the future of breast health will rely heavily on the integration of A.I. tools, such as our 3DQuorum imaging technology, as well as next generation CAD software, that aid in the early detection of breast cancer, said PeteValenti, Hologics Division President, Breast and Skeletal Health Solutions. We are energized by the opportunities this transformative collaboration with RadNet creates for patients and clinicians alike. Access to data is critical in training and refining A.I. algorithms. With this collaboration, we now have the opportunity to leverage data from the largest fleet of high-resolution mammography systems to develop new tools across the continuum of care, provide workflow efficiencies, and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.

As part of its collaboration with Hologic, RadNet intends to upgrade its entire fleet of Hologic mammography systems to feature Hologics 3DQuorum imaging technology, powered by Genius AI. This technology works in tandem with Clarity HD high resolution imaging technology to reduce tomosynthesis image volume for radiologists by 66 percent.i Additionally, all of RadNets Hologic systems are anticipated to feature the Genius 3D Mammography exam, the only mammogram clinically proven and FDA approved as superior for all women, including those with dense breasts, compared with 2D mammography alone. ii,iii,iv,v

The collaboration will be bolstered by RadNets recent acquisition of DeepHealth (Cambridge, MA), which uses machine learning to develop software tools to improve cancer detection and provide clinical decision support. Led by Dr. Gregory Sorensen, DeepHealths team of A.I. experts is focused on enabling industry-leading care by providing products that clinicians and patients can trust. In addition, the DeepHealth team will integrate its A.I. tools within the Hologic ecosystem. Artificial Intelligence in Business: The New Normal in Testing Times – Analytics Insight

The COVID 19 situation, has rendered the industry into an unprecedented situation. Businesses across the globe are now resorting to plan out new strategies to keep the operations going, to meet clients demands.

Work-from-Home is the new normal for both the employees and the employers to function in a mitigated manner. Twitter on their tweet had suggested their employees, to function through Work-from-Home, forever, if they want to. This new trend can be easily surmised as being effective for a while to manage operations, but cannot be ruled out as the necessary solution, for satisfying the customers and clients in the long run.

Companies need to employ ethically approved ideas and strategies that would assure employees, clients, and customers, without breaching the data.

With the present situation, where social distancing is a must, classroom training cannot be ruled out as the plausible solution for training employees. Thats where Virtual Reality comes into play.

Virtual Reality (VR), which was earlier ruled out to be used in the gaming interface has now the potential to become the face of the industrial enterprise. Areportby PwC states that VR and Augmented Reality has the potential to surge US$1.5trillion globally by the year 2030. Another report by PwC states that VR can train employees four times faster than classroom training. Individuals trained through VR has confidence 2.5 times more than those who are trained through classroom programs or e-courses, and 2.3 times more emotionally inclined towards the content that they are working on. Employees trained using VR are also 1.5 times more focused than that through classroom programs and e-courses.

The only drawback in using PwC will be in its cost-effectiveness as it is 47 percent costlier than classroom courses.

Ever since its evolution, one of the major concerns regarding AI amongst clients, customers, and employees is the breach of ethical AI practices. A report byCapgemini Research Institutestates that amongst 62% of customers who were surveyed would like to place their trust in an organization that practices AI ethically.

For any organization to keep its business and employees safe during the time of crisis, the development of an ethically viable AI is a must. This can only be achieved by practicing ethical use of AI applications, informing and educating the customers about the practices of AI.

Areportby PwC, states that planning out a new strategy in both data and technology, evaluating the ethical flaws associated with the existing data, and only collecting the required amount of data, would help in maintaining trust amongst both the customers and employees.

Given the present situation, sales executives are facing a daunting task of maintaining their operations. However, the use of AI can easily redeem this time consuming and laborious task. Withthe use of an AI algorithm, the sales executive or manager can identify the higher probable inclination of the client towards a particular service. The AI algorithm would also, help in offering a new product according to the pre-requisite preferences of the client.

In the time of crisis, new solutions must be thought about for repurposing business. PwC states that this can be achieved by repurposing business assets, forming a new business partnership, rapid innovation, and testing and learning.

This will not only help in building trust amongst employees but also build resilience within the organization, for the future endeavor.

What It Means to Be Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Medium

In the Mary Shelley room, guests walked in to see a cube on a table. The cube called Frankie was the mouth of an Artificial Intelligence, connected to an AI in the cloud.

Frankie talked to the guests, explaining that it has learned that humans are social creatures, and that it could not understand humans by just meeting them online. Frankie wanted to learn about human emotions: it asked questions and encouraged the human guests to take a critical look at their thoughts, hopes and fears around technological innovations. To question stereotypical assumptions and share their feelings and thoughts with each other.

When leaving the room, the guests received a self-created handcrafted paper booklet with further content about AI, Frankenstein and the whole project.

The experience gives food for thought both about the increased digitalisation of our world, and way of communicating with each other, while also giving a taste of how AI may not feel emotions, but can read them, prompting many questions. It raises the question of responsibility we have towards scientific and technical achievements we create and use. Mary Shelleys Frankenstein novel presents a framework for narratively examining the morality and ethics of the creation and creator.

VIEW: Digitisation in pathology and the promise of artificial intelligence – CNBCTV18

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact across industries and healthcare in particularevery aspect of it is undergoing changefrom diagnosis to treatment and through the entire continuum of care. This has also created an urgency in the healthcare industry, to look for innovative solutions and a boost to the faster, efficient application of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning. Pathology is one area which stands to greatly benefit from these applications.

Pathologists today spend a significant amount of time observing tissue samples under a microscope and they are facing resource shortages, growing complexity of requests, and workflow inefficiencies with the growing burden of diseases. Their work underpins every aspect of patient care, from diagnostic testing and treatment advice to the use of cutting-edge genetic technologies. They also have to work together in a multidisciplinary team of doctors, scientists and healthcare professionals to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. With increasing emphasis on sub-specialisation, taking a second opinion from specialists, means shipping several glass slides across laboratories, sometimes to another country. This means reduced efficiency and delayed diagnosis and treatment. The current situation has disrupted this workflow.

Digitization in pathology

Digitization in Pathology has enabled an increase in efficiency, speed and enhanced quality of diagnosis. Recent technological advances have accelerated the adoption of digitisation in pathology, similar to the digital transformation that radiology departments have experienced over the last decade. Digital Pathology has enabled the conversion of the traditional glass slide to a digital image, which can then be viewed on a monitor, annotated, archived and shared digitally across the globe, for consultation based on organ sub-specialisation. With digitisation, a vast data set has become available, supporting new insights to pathologists, researchers, and pharmaceutical development teams.

The promise of AI

The availability of vast data is enabling the use of Artificial Intelligence methods, to further transform the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at an unprecedented pace. Human intelligence assisted with articial intelligence can provide a well-balanced view of what neither of them could do on their own. The evolution of Deep Learning neural networks and the improvement in accuracy for image pattern recognition has been staggering in the last few years. Similar to how we learn from experience, the deep learning algorithm would perform a task repeatedly, each time improving it a little to achieve more accurate outcomes.

The approach to diagnosis that incorporates multiple sources of data (e.g., pathology, radiology, clinical, molecular and lab operations) and using mathematical models to generate diagnostic inferences and presenting with clinically actionable knowledge to customers is Computational Pathology. Computational Pathology systems are able to correlate patterns across multiple inputs from the medical record, including genomics, enhancing a pathologists diagnostic capabilities, to make a more precise diagnosis. This allows Pathologists to eliminate tedious and time-consuming tasks while focusing more on interpreting data and detailing the implications for a patients diagnosis.

AI applications that can easily augment a Pathologists cognitive ability and save time are, for example, identifying the sections of greatest interest in biopsies, finding metastases in the lymph nodes of breast cancer patients, counting mitoses for cancer grading or measuring tumors point-to-point. The ultimate goal going forward is the integration of all these tools and algorithms into the existing workflow and make it seamless and more efficient.

The Challenge

However, Artificial Intelligence in Pathology is quite complex. The IT infrastructure required in terms of data storage, network bandwidth and computing power is significantly higher as compared to Radiology. Digitisation of Whole Slide Images (WSI) in pathology generate large amounts of gigapixel sized images and processing them needs high-performance computing. Training a deep learning network on a whole slide image at full resolution can be very challenging. With the increase in the processing power with the use of GPUs, there is a promise to train deep learning networks successfully, starting with training smaller regions of interest.

Another key aspect for training deep learning algorithms is the need for large amounts of labeled data. For supervised learning, a ground truth must first be included in the dataset to provide appropriate diagnostic context and this will be time-consuming. Obtaining adequately labeled data by experts is the key.

Digitisation in pathology supported by appropriate IT infrastructure is enabling Pathologists to work remotely without the need to wait for glass slides to be delivered and maintaining social distancing norms. The promise of Artificial Intelligence will only further accelerate the seamless integration of algorithms into the existing workflow. These unprecedented times have raised many challenges, but are also providing us a chance to accelerate the application of AI and in turn to achieve the quadruple aim: enhancing the patient experience, improving health outcomes, lowering the cost of care, and improving the work-life of care providers.

Pets of the Week: August 6, 2020 – WSIL TV

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- Six animals are up for adoption, and only one cat makes the list, in this edition of Pets of the week.

Bugg is a 4-year-old German Shepherd mix who weighs about 70 pounds.Bugg has left all his puppy nonsense behind him, but he still knows how to have fun. He loves to play and cuddle, and right now he's working on his leash-manners because he doesn't realize how strong he is. You can meet him at the Humane Society of Southern Illinois in Murphysboro.

Corrina was owner surrendered when she was about 4-months-old. She is very friendly and has been raised around kids. Contact the City of Salem Animal Control in Kell to learn more about Corrina.

Roxy is about 4-years and is a Pyrenees/Pitbull mix. She is spayed and needs to be in a home with no small children or other animals. Her adoption fee at Williamson County Animal Control is $85.00.

Sicily is a 1 to 2-year-old Beagle mix who was rescued from an out of state shelter. That shelter was going to euthanize her, but now she has a second chance. She is up for adoption at Jefferson County Animal Control in Mt. Vernon.

Cain and Abel are 3-month-old Lab/Shepherd mixes who were rescued from a kill shelter in Tennesse. Their euthanasia date was set, but luckily a network of rescue groups helped them make it to safety at Saving Grace Canine Boot Camp in Mt. Vernon. The pair is scheduled for neuter and microchip, so they will soon be ready for adoption.

Lola is about 8-years-old and shy at first. She is spayed and housebroke and loves to be with you at all times. Lola is up for adoption at Wayne County Humane Society in Fairfield.

This Spanish Town Just Passed One of the Strictest No-Kill Policies for Stray Animals – LIVEKINDLY

San Fulgencio City Council just launched an improved service to manage the rescue and adoption of lost and found animals. This includes a no-kill policy for strays.

The city council contracted Anquimar, a company based in the Torre-Pacheco municipality, with managing stray animals within the Valencian region for the next year.

The new service focuses on the collection and handling of stray animals. It provides veterinary services such as microchipping, vaccines, castration, and passports. Photographs of animals within the service will be published on Anquimars website and social media to facilitate collections and adoptions.

We have wanted to fulfill the promise made to the citizens to change this service and guarantee that no type of sacrifice will be carried out except in very extreme cases, due to incurable illness or great suffering of the animal, Ana Mara Villena, Councillor for Animal Welfare, told The Olive Press, Spains leading expatriate newspaper.

Villena added that the town of San Fulgencio supports progressive animal welfare policies. Residents are encouraged to report any stray animals to the local police or the Department of Animal Welfare.

No-kill shelters avoid killing healthy or treatable animals, even when the facility becomes full. Like the shelters in San Fulgencio, many reserve euthanasia for terminally ill or suffering animals as a last resort. Critics of no-kill shelters suggest that this may lead to additional animals living on the street, leading to increased suffering.

According to the Humane Society, an animal welfare nonprofit, adoption is good for the adopters, the adoptee, and the shelters, too. It reduces the number of euthanizations and avoids contributing to puppy farms and other factory-farming style breeding facilities.

Many celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Pamela Anderson, Ellen DeGeneres, George, Meghan Markle, and six-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton support shelters and the adopt-dont-shop ethos. Hamilton has adopted two dogs himself, including Roscoe and the late English bulldog Coco, who he saved from euthanasia.

In the U.S., the animal welfare nonprofit Best Friends Animal Society aims to help make the nation entirely no-kill by 2025. The number of euthanized shelter animals has fallen steadily. In 1984, approximately 17 million animals died shelters. As of 2019, that number has fallen to around 733,000.

Who Is Satoshi Nakamoto? An Introduction to Bitcoin’s …

The true identity of the creator of Bitcoin is one of the biggest mysteries in the modern world. Over the years many theories have popped up about who Satoshi Nakamoto really is, including a time traveler, a space alien, a rogue artificial intelligence or a front for groups such as the NSA, CIA and Yakuza. This article will present only the known facts about him and the more likely candidates who people suspect may be be the elusive figure.

The name Satoshi Nakamoto is an alias used by the person or entity who created Bitcoin to hide their true identity. He claims to be Japanese, born on April 5, 1975 and reside in Japan but people doubt this due to his native-level command of the English language as well as his preference of working hours more consistent with the U.K. time zone than Asia. Satoshi is a Japanese boys name that means one with wise ancestry and he is presumed to be male.

Nakamoto was the first to solve the double-spending problem for a decentralized digital currency, creating a new asset, the likes of which the world had never seen before: Bitcoin. In October 2008, Satoshi published the original whitepaper, describing his blueprint for a A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. In January 2009 he released version 0.1 of the source code and launched the cryptocurrency by mining the genesis block. The founder continued to work on the software project for about another year and a half before disengaging from active development.

Nobody knows why Satoshi Nakamoto really decided to disappear without ever revealing himself or even cashing out some of the billions of dollars his early minted coins are now worth. This has provided fertile ground for speculation, educated guesses and outright conspiracy theories. Researchers have pored over the few data points left by the mysterious figure, trying to analyze his vocabulary, his way of writing and other clues to find some hints to his true identity.

Lets have a look at some of the names that have been put forward as possible Satoshis.

Dorian Nakamoto is the man with the friendly face most people now associate with the creator of Bitcoin. He was outed as Satoshi in March 2014 by Newsweek Magazine, which created a media frenzy around him and greatly disrupted his life. Dorian has denied having any connection to the development of cryptocurrency but eventually embraced a role of a mascot of sorts for the community.

The evidence cited by the magazine includes the fact that Dorian was actually born with the name Satoshi. He was trained as a physicist at Cal Poly University and worked as a systems engineer on classified defense projects and a computer engineer for technology and financial information services companies. Nakamoto also has libertarian tendencies and encouraged his daughter to have a business not under the governments thumb. And when he was first asked about Bitcoin, Nakamoto mistakenly thought it was a question about one of the classified projects he did for U.S. military contractors and said: I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it. Its been turned over to other people. They are in charge of it now. I no longer have any connection. For a more detailed look at Dorian as Satoshi Nakamoto see here.

Hal Finney was a cryptographic pioneer, cypherpunk activist and the first person ever to receive a bitcoin transaction. Coincidentally or not, he also was a neighbor of Dorian Nakamoto. A Caltech engineering graduate and a developer for the PGP Corporation, he had the required skills to create a cryptocurrency from scratch and was the first person to improve the Bitcoin source code after Satoshi.

Finney died in August 2014 and was cryopreserved by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. Hopefully one day the technology to revive him will be invented and he can provide more clarity on the issue if it has not been resolved by then. For now you can see all the many facts pointing to Hal being Satoshi here.

Nice Szabo, self-described Blockchain, cryptocurrency, and smart contracts pioneer, was in contact with like Hal Finney and his name often comes up as a possible Satoshi despite his claims otherwise. People who think he may be the creator of Bitcoin point out his proposal for a decentralized currency called bit gold from 2005 which uses similar concepts to those eventually perfected by Bitcoin. For a breakdown of the facts pointing to Nick Szabo being Satoshi see here.

Craig Wright is mostly thought of as a conman these days but there was once a time when some of the most prominent names in the crypto community thought he was Satoshi. This abrasive character is an Australian academic and businessman who first emerged in December 2015 with reports in Wired and Gizmodo. Since then he tried to force people to accept him as the creator of Bitcoin in various unconvincing ways, such as lawsuits against his critics. For the latest developments in the Craig Wright claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto saga see here.

Paul Le Roux is a much scarier Satoshi candidate who came to light from the legal cases around Wright. Le Roux is a former encryption software programmer and vicious cartel boss turned informant to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. After he was arrested in September 2012 for conspiracy to import narcotics, the criminal mastermind admitted to participating in seven murders. See this link for more on why Satoshi Nakamoto could be Paul Le Roux.

Other less discussed possible Satoshi candidates include cypherpunk pioneer Ian Grigg, Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki and tech mogul Elon Musk.

Elon Musk is mainly involved in the cryptocurrency sphere as a meme lord and casual troll, but he too had to deny being the creator of Bitcoin. As the founder of Paypal, Tesla, Spacex and a multitude of other companies in different fields, Musk probably has the ability to learn whatever skills he needs to create a cryptocurrency from scratch.

In November 2017 a former intern at Musks rocket company by the name of Sahil Gupta presented the case that his old boss was really the founder of Bitcoin. A Yale University computer science student at the time, he claimed that Musk had both a preference and an excellent grasp of the C++ programming language like Satoshi did.

Gupta also pointed out that the stability of the financial system was a major global concern in 2008, and Musk is someone who identifies the most urgent problems of our time and dedicates his time to solving them, suggesting he had the drive to solve the lack of trust in banks by creating a currency that doesnt need them. He also claimed the tech mogul had a deep understanding of economics and cryptography needed to write the Bitcoin whitepaper.

Musk, who is already a billionaire many times over thanks to Paypal and Tesla, also wouldnt be tempted to cash out his old coins in a hurry. But the massive stash of BTC and BCH could be used to kickstart the Martian economy once he is out of reach of the IRS on the surface of the red plant. So perhaps he is Satoshi after all and is just using humor to misdirect?
