Welcome back to Planet Earth and thank you for flying SpaceX – Central Coast Community News

It may seem timely, against a backdrop of climate change and a global pandemic, that this weeks successful mission by the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft raised the prospect of safe, commercial space travel.

Billionaire Elon Musks SpaceX completed its first crewed mission into space, with the Crew Dragon capsule splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico this week after a two-month space voyage.

Crew Dragon was the first privately-owned spacecraft to carry humans into space.

It was launched from NASAs Kennedy Space Station at Cape Canaveral on May 31 and made the 19-hour flight to the International Space Station where astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley spent two months before returning to Earth.

NASA reported that the capsule was travelling at a speed of some 28,000kms per hour before entering the Earths atmosphere, at which point its outer surface withstood temperatures reaching almost 2,000 degrees.

The capsule was then slowed by on-board thrusters and two sets of parachutes prior to splashdown.

The crew reportedly spent close to an hour floating inside the capsule before being recovered and flown to NASAs Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, for medical checks.

The mission was also NASAs first crewed mission from American soil in nine years, with recent expeditions to the International Space Station being launched out of Russia.

The successful mission established the credentials of Elon Musks private company SpaceX to transport people safely through space and marks the culmination of a project now 18 years in the making.

This is a craft made by humans, for humans, I think its something humanity should be proud about [it is the] first step on a journey that would see humans become a multi-planetary species, Musk was reported as saying at the launch.

US President Donald Trump reportedly responded to the successful mission of the Crew Dragon by saying: a new age of American ambition has now begun.

Under NASAs Commercial Crew Programme, we will use rockets and spacecraft designed, built, owned and launched by private American companies at a fixed price for the American taxpayer, the President said.

Musk is reportedly planning more adventurous commercial flights to the moon and even to Mars.

Indeed, an unmanned prototype of SpaceXs next-generation Starship vehicle has successfully flown to an altitude of 150m (500ft) before landing again.

The flight was carried out at SpaceXs test site near the village of Boca Chica in south Texas.

The stainless steel test vehicle, called SN5, looks a little bit like old Aussie water tank or wheat silo but, if Musk is to be believed, the final version which would stand 50 metres tall and be powered by six Raptor engines, could one day be capable of carrying as many as 100 humans to Mars.

Mars is looking real, tweeted Musk after the successful test flight.

The big challenge of course, is clearing the gravitational pull of the Earth and that, apparently, will require much more firepower.

And as for price well, so far Musk has signed up Japanese fashion mogul and billionaire, Yusaku Maezawa, for the first round-the-moon trip on the SpaceX Starship (for an undisclosed sum).

More than one Central Coast resident has written to us this week and pondered whether the repeal of the WAR Act (1996) opens up the opportunity for Council to pitch Warnervale Airport to Mr Musk as Australias own Cape Canaveral.

Well, Elon, how about it?

Don’t You Wish You Could Fly Free Like This Beautiful Space Butterfly? – Mashable India

These are hard days for the humans of planet Earth, especially those of us who despise inequity and fascism. Wouldn't it be nice, then, if you could flap your brilliantly colored wings and take off into the stars?

The below image, captured by the European Southern Observatory's "Very Large Telescope" (great name) in northern Chile, gives us a look at the vibrant planetary nebula known as NGC 2899. Yeah, I know, it's not a real butterfly. But imagine if. Then go further, and pretend the butterfly is you.

Gorgeous view, right?

The nebula, which was apparently first discovered in 1835, resides in the Vela constellation. It's not especially close to Earth, at 6,500 light-years away, but the prospect of human space travel carrying us even a single light-year isn't really an option at this point.

(A single light year, for those who might not know, is trillions of miles.)

The ESO points out that this newly captured photo is the clearest look we've ever gotten at NGC 2899, and oh how lucky we are. The Very Large Telescope captured the images with help from the FORS instrument, which is basically a very powerful visible light camera.

A nebula like NGC 2899 is an interstellar cloud comprised of various elements and ionized gases. That brilliant array of colors is just how all those little bits and particles look from our extreme distance. Many are formed out of the remnants of an exploding star. No one can say how or why it's shaped like a giant space butterfly, but we can all be thankful for that regardless.

Fly free, pretty space butterfly. Take us with you, please.

From birds to burrs, here are four examples of biomimicry at work – create digital

According to the US-based Biomimicry Institute, biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges.

Put simply, its the innovation that arises from nature. And from Velcro to bullet trains, nature can be seen as the inspiration behind many of societys latest and greatest innovations.

The fastest train in the world was creating serious noise pollution until Japanese engineer, Eiji Nakatsu came across an innovative idea while birdwatching.

Noticing that kingfishers barely make a splash when diving into water to catch fish, Nakatsu designed a roughly 15-metre-long steel beak for the high-speed trains, to reduce the tunnel boom that occurred when the trains exited a tunnel. Not only did it solve the noise pollution issue, it also increased the efficiency of the Shinkansen by 10 to 15 per cent.

Nakatsu also redesigned the shape of the trains pantograph to mimic an owls wings, including feather-like noise-dampening serrations along the pantographs wing, to break up the rushing air turbulence.

At the University of South Australia (UniSA), researchers have also been looking to nature, studying the surfaces of plants and animal species that have been found to be highly resistant to microbial attack due to their unique structure at the nanoscale.

They used this research to develop innovative dental implants that are resistant to microbial infection.

Our work has focused on mimicking structures found on the wings of insects, which contain billions of nanopillars that operate as a nanomechanical barrier to bacterial colonisation, said lead UniSA researcher,Professor Krasi Vasilev.

The structure mechanically kills the same broad range of bacteria known to cause orthopaedic and dental implant infections, which can lead to the failure of the procedure.

The researchers recently teamed up with medical technology company, ANISOP Holdings, with the goal of translating the nanoengineering concepts into reality.

They say the new dental implants could prevent infections before they become serious or potentially life-threatening problems, with the potential to save millions of dollars globally.

Over in the UK, researchers at Durham University have engineered the first manufactured non-cuttable material, using abalone shells and grapefruit skins as inspiration.

The [abalone] shell is 2000 times harder to crack than the bricks that its made of, said Stefan Szyniszewski, a Durham University engineering professor who was part of the research team.

When you think of security doors or armoured steel, its very heavy. And if you look at protective structures in nature, like the peel of a grapefruit, theyre usually very light.

Inspired by these strong yet lightweight biological structures, researchers developed a metallic cellular structure composed of an internal grid of large ceramic segments. The resulting material was both highly deformable and ultraresistant to dynamic point loads; found to be non-cuttable by an angle grinder and a power drill.

Potential applications for the new material range from personal protective equipment, bike locks and lightweight armour to the doors of a vault in a bank.

While the term biomimicry was coined in 1997, using nature as inspiration can be seen in designs dating back much earlier.

For example, in 1941 Swiss engineer George de Mestral found small burrs covering his dogs fur after a hunting expedition, and was intrigued by the way the burrs were able to defy gravity.

Examining the tiny hooks under a microscope, de Mestral noticed the burrs interlocking mechanism, and was inspired to mimic the structure as a fastener for clothing.

He patented his idea in 1948, and Velcro has since become a household name.

The list goes on

From architecture inspired by termite mounds to sports cars modelled on sailfish, nature as design inspiration can be seen in many innovations.

UNB professor working on a mask that would kill the coronavirus – CBC.ca

Amid growing evidence of airborne transmission of COVID-19, the work of one New Brunswick researcher could become an important tool to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Felipe Chibante, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of New Brunswick, is working on a face mask that would not only trap the coronavirus, it would kill it.

He says that same technology could eventually lead to air filters that would do the same thing on a larger scale for homes and office buildings.

The key is to use tiny particles of virus-killing material to make the masks.

Incorporating such metals into a face mask "at the nano-scale is very effective at killing airborne pathogens," he said.

Chibante is one of several New Brunswick researchers to receive money for COVID-19-related projects.

In March, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, in partnership with the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF), launched a COVID-19 Research Fund and invited researchers to apply which they did in droves.

They received 60 applications and requests for $2.3 million in funding, which was more money than they had available.

That's when the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) stepped in to provide more funding. In total, 27 projects across the province have been approved to the tune of $846,707.

As people and governments debate whether to make face masks mandatory, a growing body of scientific and anecdotal evidence suggests airborne transmission may be important in spreading the virus.

In an open letter published earlier this month, 239 scientists from 32 countries called on the World Health Organization to acknowledge that airborne transmission of the coronavirus is a potential driver of the pandemic.

The WHO had long maintained that the virus is spread by large droplets, but recently acknowledged the possibility of airborne transmission, saying it cannot be ruled out.

Those developments aren't lost on Chibante, who says airborne transmission makes the use of masks even more important.

Chibante, whose background includes working with nano-particles in the development of clean energy, says the first step in the project is to create nano-coatings capable of killing airborne pathogens, like the virus that causes COVID-19.

That material would then be incorporated into the mask itself and help filter out particles.

Chibante and his team will be working with several metals that have already proven their antibacterial and antiviral properties. Copper for example, has long been known to disrupt or kill pathogens, which include bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms that can cause disease.

Silver is another possibility, although only when reduced to nano-size. Chibante explained that the properties of some metals, like silver, change when reduced and they become "the enemy of viruses."

Chibante's team will be working with the Sabian cymbal company of Meductic, which will provide some of the metal material that his team will "nano-ize" for the project.

Sabian offered to supply the raw material for the project, explained chief operating officer Mike Connell.

In fact, the company approached the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation early on in the pandemic to explore ways it could help in the global fight against COVID-19.

After all, company officials were already aware of the antiviral potential of copper, said Connell.

They had a lot of copper sitting around and business had dropped off as a result of the pandemic, he said.

"We thought there might be potential for high touch-point items made of copper alloys because of its disinfectant properties."

Connell said they wondered about whether copper could be incorporated into face masks. They were just tossing around ideas at the time, and he said they're pleased to leave the scientific part of the project to the experts.

He said they initially handed over a supply of the exact same material used for making cymbals a combination of copper and tin and will create different combinations of metals if asked to do so as the project progresses.

Once an effective coating is developed, it will be incorporated into the mask itself. That way, when viruses are trapped in the mask's filtration system, it doesn't continue to live there.

"We know that COVID can hang around for a long time," he explained. "So now you have a mask that's a biohazard, and you have to dispose of it, and there's hundreds of millions of masks in Canada that we're processing as biohazard. And so the idea was, can we do something that would actually kill the virus once it landed on the mask?"

Chibante said being able to destroy the virus eliminates the argument some people have made about masks being harmful to the wearer. A COVID-killing maskwill not only protect other people, but will protect the person wearing it, he said.

"So it's community hygiene as opposed to individual hygiene," said Chibante.

Eventually, he hopes toeliminate another complaint of mask-haters bymaking them see-through to allow for better communication.

As an added phase to the project, he's using his work in the energy sector to create a self-sanitizing feature for the masks. Since pathogens can usually be destroyed at temperatures above 60 Celsius, he envisions using tiny electrical systems to create enough heat in the mask to destroy anything that wasn't already killed on contact with the anti-viral coating. He says it could be as easy as plugging the mask into a USB port to activate what could be thought of as "nano-zappers."

"By engineering and controlling those electrical properties, we can actually be able to heat up the mask internally where all the action is. We don't want to just blow hot air into it. We want to have it, you know, almost like a little toaster element inside your mask."

Chibante says the technology could eventually be expanded for use in air-exchange systems in homes and commercial buildings.

"It's the same kind of principle where you have an airborne pathogen and you want to remove it, and you don't want to be just changing your filters every day. You want to reuse that filter for a period of time. So we see this being able to extend beyond just personal protection equipment but to, you know, commercial systems."

Psoriasis Awareness Month: Cyndi Lauper slept in a rubber suit for three nights straight to beat the disease – MEAWW

Cyndi Lauper was diagnosed with psoriasis, an auto-immune chronic disorder, in 2010. The condition leads to red and raised patches lined by silvery scales on the skin and for Lauper, it started with her scalp which she at first thought must be because of bugs. "I had this kind of buildup on my scalp, which, because my son played hockey at the time, I thought Oh, it might be bugs (from the hockey players). Id never had bugs. Then I went to the doctor and he said, 'No, no, no, thats plaque psoriasis,'" she said in an interview with Health.

She always had good skin while growing up but after her diagnosis, she started to lose hope of feeling good in her skin ever again. As a singer who is constantly on the go, the disease pulled her down really hard. "Youre tired. Its an inflammatory disease so it kind of zaps your strength. And trying to sing, work out, and have all this (clothing) on, and then taking it off, your skin comes with it. Its awful. Emotionally, honestly, at the height of being that sick, you feel very much alone." After trying out cortisone creams, she realized that the side-effects of it were too much to deal with and that is when she turned to traditional medicine.

"Now I can get back to the things I like to do, like singing and going on tour. After I started the medicine, psoriasis started to go away, and I couldnt even believe it. I was always on eggshells. I still lather up with cream and am nervous because I dont want to go back to that," she said. Lauper also advocates seeking medical assistance and self-care for people affected by this condition. She spoke about the importance of the same elaborately in an awareness video by the National Psoriasis Foundation in 2015. In the video, she says that she tried every method in the book including the time she slept in a rubber suit with cream on for three nights straight, a measure taken upon a doctor's advice that happened to eventually work for her.

The reason why she lends her voice to Psoriasis awareness is that she believes the condition "is one of those things that no one wants to talk about, which makes it something I want to talk about". As a word of advice for people with psoriasis, she said, "Its not just a rash. Dont let it go. Get information. Knowledge is power." She also advocates taking measures for taking steps to keep one's mental health in check as the disease affects more than just the skin. "Youre hurting inside because you feel powerless and information is power. Help yourself. Dont just sit in the dark," she said.

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month and it brings an opportunity for survivors and activists to share tips and raise awareness about the genetic disease. In this column, we highlight the struggles of celebrities and talk about preventative and cure measures.

PMs Ayodhya speech: It was technically pitch perfect, but there was little that was meditative and spiritua – Economic Times

Whether or not you like Prime Minister Narendra Modis views, as a speaker he is unmatched in Indian politics. At Ayodhya, his speech was technically pitch-perfect the fluency, the alliteration, the cadences and the Sanskrit. His supporters and those who are moved by the building of a Ram temple would have applauded. Sadly, the speech was a colossal missed opportunity and repeatedly hit the wrong note. Wherever you stand on the Ayodhya issue and the tearing down of the mosque, this was a moment for a meditative, spiritual reflection on the site and its significance. The PM mouthed all the right words, but there was little that was meditative and spiritual in the speech. The lips said one thing, but the voice, the tone and the physical bearing said something else.

Modi has worked hard to train his voice over the years. At Ayodhya, it felt raucous. It was clear that he was addressing not the audience in front of him which was just metres away; rather, he was speaking to 1.3 billion Indians and the diaspora in distant lands. For nearly forty minutes it was all too loud and shouty, as if he wanted to bridge the physical distance to the larger, absent audience through sheer vocal power. Even when I have disagreed with Modi (most of the time), I have listened to him with attention. On August 5, his performance was tiring and grating. The tone, too, was wrong. The more fluent Modi got, the more he sounded scripted. As it went along, he seemed more triumphalist than reflective, more grandiloquent than eloquent, more wordy than profound. The speech seemed to strain to be remembered as a classic, whereas it should have stayed in the moment. Above all, it was bombastic when it should have displayed humility, at a place millions regard as hallowed ground.

The prime ministers bearing too seemed ill-suited to the occasion. He prostrated himself during the rituals, but the body language during the speech was commanding and magisterial. It needed a rounding of the shoulders and a slight stoop, to acknowledge that he was the messenger not the message. It was a time for soft faraway eyes not the usual flashing Modi eyes. Put differently, it wanted more Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in his later years poetry in motion, not a stentorian lecture. Why did it go wrong? Because it was conceived and curated all wrong. The PM laid the first brick. He did the pooja. He spoke. This was a time for others to do and for others to speak as well, even if they are not national personalities and riveting speakers some of the sants, the priests and religious thinkers, perhaps some ordinary and dignified locals. Modi should have courteously held back. Unfortunately, politics and he were centre-stage.

The PM evoked the many Ramayanas, from every corner of the land. All we heard in the speeches though was Hindi. Hundreds of millions in India dont speak Hindi well and would have had great difficulty understanding Modis complex sentences. There was nothing for them except the sight of the prime minister spinning words at the dais for 40 minutes. Was there no one from the four tirtha sthals of India who could have authentically addressed us? Finally, holding the temples founding on the anniversary of the scrapping of Article 370 coloured the event. The prime minister might have resisted linking the event to a new nationalism, but he didnt. Not surprisingly, as it unfolded, the occasion became another political performance. Modi, Yogi Adityanath and Mohan Bhagwat turned it into flag waving. Millions of Hindus are deeply attached to Ayodhya, and the PM could have made it into a moment of transcendence and piety. Instead, however elevated the words, they chose the mundane and the predictable. To this Indian, it felt flat and cynical.

Swamiji and Politics – The Statesman

Swami Vivekananda was an all-renouncing monk. Like other worldly things, politics was also a thing from which he kept himself aloof.

So, he was never found to participate in any political activity of his time, let alone give voice to any political view. Not only that, he made it mandatory for members of his monastic organization to avoid politics in all forms.

Violations made one liable to be dismissed from the organisation. That the norm was quite stringent was evident from Niveditas dissociation from Ramakrishna Mission, consequent upon her links with politics.

It is important to remember in this context that Swamiji did not grant her Sannyasa in spite of her earnest entreaty. But then, Swamiji was an Acharya which meant he was a pathfinder-teacher of mankind.

Accordingly, by virtue of his deep sympathy for man, he shared his thoughts with us, making no exception to his ideas on politics. He had, however, little faith in politics since it often reduced men to brutes who in the name of politics rob others and fatten themselves by sucking the very life blood of the masses.

None could deny this, looking at what is presently happening at various levels.

Indeed, it is imaginable what, therefore, would have been his reaction had he seen politics suffused with lies and lust for power as it is today in this country.

Swamijis concern for India was born of his spiritual realisation that every speck of dust of India was holy. Sages walked its soil and had freely contributed for human progress with no sense of racial prejudice and discrimination. Their descendants pursued the same policy through the vicissitudes of history.

Humanity at large was benefited as a result and respected India for centuries. He gave an inkling of Indias exceptional character and contribution in his maiden speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. He believed Indias survival with its originality was essential as an example for rest of the world to emulate. Hence, any nation overpowering and obliterating it politically was intolerable to him.

So, he said British should be ousted from India at any cost. Youths of the land drew lessons and inspiration from his works containing his patriotic ideas to fight for political freedom as well as for nation-building. This is why Swamiji became, posthumously, a political suspect to the British.

Real prosperity will not come out of moral degradation, for which, Swamiji saw, politics was responsible to a great extent. He said law, government, politics are phases, not final in any way, because the goal is beyond them. He thought politics had missed that goal as it did not care for mans inner growth and perfection.

Swamiji noticed that caste, creed and community-based politics was plaguing India fast. It was giving primacy to temple and mosque, which he had set aside as secondary details. Humanism was getting short shrift, diabolism gaining the social space perpetrating divisions between man and man. He was angry with politics because it was playing a foul game.

He articulated his anger thus: Now, in my little experience I have collected this knowledge that for all the devilry that religion is blamed with, religion is not at all in fault: no religion ever persecuted men, no religion ever burnt witches, no religion ever did any other things. What then incited people to do these things? Politics, but never religion; and if such politics takes the name of religion whose fault is that?

Essence of religion is spirituality. No religious person gets involved in evil deeds, bringing misery to others. Swamiji deemed religion in the light of his own spiritual experience as the greatest and the healthiest exercise that the human mind can have, for it is mans constitutional necessity. He said man is a compound of animality, humanity, and divinity.

The aim of religion is to manifest divinity in man, annihilating his evil tendencies, especially the tendency of jealousy which operates so mysteriously. Divisive politics of prejudice, jealousy and hatred are not palatable to one who is committed to spirituality which generates love and sympathy for all.

In view of this, Swamiji had said that the nation should be deluged with spiritual ideas before it gets flooded with political ideas, so that adverse politics could not incite people to do anything unethical. Swamiji saw socialism from a different angle, mixing spirituality with it.

In a speech before an audience of European intellectuals he said: In India we have social communism, with the light of Advaita ~ playing in and around; in Europe you are socially individualists, but your thought is dualistic, which is spiritual communism. Thus, the one consists of socialistic institutions, hedged in by individualistic thought, while the other is made up of individualist institutions, within the hedge of communistic thought.

Socialism as a political philosophy was then gathering momentum and earning popularity rapidly. Its waves had also reached India. Swamiji was well posted regarding its movements in the West. He found it to resemble some of his ideas on the uplift of the masses, and thereby chose to declare himself as a socialist.

He was particularly impressed by its concern for the proletariat. But he was unimpressed by it as well because he did not see it as a means for comprehensive alleviation of suffering, therefore called it half a loaf. Perceiving its innate debilities, he knew that socialism could not diminish the yawning chasm between the haves and have-nots.

Besides, he marked, there were differences among its promoters and leaders, culminating in diverse views. For instance, as Prof. Subodh Sengupta had written: Socialism, made popular in the modern world by Saint Simon (1760- 1825), Fourier (1772-1832) and Robert Owen (1804-1892), is a tricky concept of which no one has been able to give an acceptable definition. From each according to his ability and to each according to his needs, said Marx, but Lenin replaced it with From each according to his ability, to each according to his work.

Bernard Shaw rejects both the formulas. Swamijis study of socialistic movements was keen and supple, because of which he could correctly predict the revolutions of Russia and China, although they were non-industrial countries. His forecast was especially correct when he said in 1897 that India would achieve freedom in fifty years. Although unthinkable at the time, it happened exactly that way in 1947.

The world was literally topsy-turvy for fifty years after Swamijis demise in 1902. Inordinate ambition for power and mastery made international politics venomous. Imperialism, Fascism and Nazism perpetuated heinous crimes and genocide. Two bloody socialistic revolutions killed millions. Above all, two protracted world wars and a couple of atom bombs fetched misery beyond definition to mankind.

Long before these, Swamijis super-sensitive mind received premonitions of such unprecedented predicaments which urged him to tell us with a note of serious caution that the world was standing on the vortex of a volcano due to erupt any moment. To allay their dangers, he strikingly suggested international organizations when the concept of UNO and its sister organizations would have seemed wistful.

He said: Even in politics and sociology, problems that were national twenty years ago can no more be solved on national grounds only. They are assuming huge proportions, gigantic shapes. They can only be solved when looked at in the broader light of international grounds. International organizations, international combinations, international laws are the cry of the day.

Unforgetful of the fact that politics is an integral part of modern life, he knew it was impossible for people to do away with politics, for their life was bound with political compulsions indispensably. He, accordingly, did not ask householders to turn away from politics. He was innovative in this connection.

He said: I could not preach religion in England without showing the wonderful political changes Vedanta would bring. So, in India, social reform has to be preached by showing how much more a spiritual life the new system will bring; and politics has to be preached by showing how much it will improve the one thing that the nation wants ~ its spirituality.

Swamiji was an unattached observer of politics. Dirt of politics could not touch him. But his analysis of politics was pithy, precise, adroit and innocuous, for which he is remembered with high respect and devotion by various scholars.

Christopher Isherwood remarked: In fact, when one sees the full range of his (Swamijis) mind, one is astounded. He had further said that Swamijis was not nationalism in the smaller sense, it was a kind of supernationalism, a kind of internationalism sublimated.

Similarly, renowned Indologist Prof AL Basham made a sincere study of Swamijis works and proclaimed that in centuries to come he (Swamiji) will be remembered as one of the main moulders of the modern world.

One in Christ, one with the people of Lebanon – CatholicPhilly.com

Gina Christian

By Gina Christian Posted August 7, 2020

As I pattered at my laptop earlier this week, a friend interrupted with an alarmed text: What is going on in Lebanon?!

Immersed in emails, I hadnt checked the headlines for a few hours, but along with the rest of the world, I quickly learned of the devastating Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut that has so far killed at least 154 while injuring some 5,000. The port was largely destroyed, along with entire sections of a city that has existed, in some form, for 4,000 years.

As the disaster unfolded, sorrow quickly merged with outrage: the blast had been caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer and mining explosive, that had been improperly stored at a port warehouse after officials had impounded a shipment. A full investigation is pending, but by most accounts, it appears that the tragedy was the result of negligence, bureaucracy and corruption an unholy trinity that has for too long ravaged the historic land of Lebanon, leaving its people impoverished and disheartened, and all the more so in the wake of COVID-19.

The day after the explosion, I called one of the local Lebanese Catholic parishes, St. Maron in South Philadelphia. After asking if the pastor would be available for comment, I was quickly invited to that evenings liturgy, which was to be offered for the victims and for the nation of Lebanon.

Driving down I-95 to St. Marons, though, I started to hesitate.

Would the parishioners find me intrusive another media person with a camera, probing wounds for the public eye?

Then too, this liturgy would be Maronite Catholic, a rite with which this Roman reporter wasnt familiar. I didnt know the Syriac language, a dialect of the Aramaic spoken by Christ, that was used for the rites prayers and hymns. Perhaps I might make a liturgical misstep that would distract and annoy.

And wouldnt my expressions of sympathy, coming from one who had no direct connection to Lebanon, sounds as hollow as the thoughts and prayers wishes of social media?

By my fourth attempt to find parking near the church, Id almost given up, but when a spot opened just two blocks away, I tucked in my truck, grabbed my gear and hastened down the street with less than five minutes to spare.

Arriving at the church, I slipped quietly next to a television cameraman, who had set up his tripod to the side of the congregation. The reporter he accompanied had taken a seat at the back, microphone in hand, scanning the sanctuary. I remained standing, my eyes taking in the bowed heads of the two dozen parishioners who had gathered, several of them wiping away tears.

The liturgy began, and mysteriously, my tension began to fade as I lost myself in its beauty. The sorrow of those around me was palpable, but so too was their faith as they sang and responded in English and Syriac. Hands cupped, they received holy Communion from a pastor who had poured his broken heart, and his love for Lebanon, into every word of an impassioned homily in which he called for justice, honesty and above all the mercy of God.

Afterwards, I sought out a few parishioners for comment, including a young woman who had moved from Lebanon to Philadelphia only months earlier. She listened patiently as I introduced myself and asked for her thoughts, smiling wanly behind her face mask and brushing back a strand of her long hair.

She hadnt lost any immediate family members, she said with a sigh of relief. But several of her friends were indeed among the injured; suddenly, her eyes filled with tears as her voice trailed off.

It was the very moment Id dreaded, one in which my zeal to share an important perspective had caused more pain than it would alleviate.

Yet that in the evenings Eucharist, a feast of eternal joy shared even amid incomprehensible anguish, we were united beyond the bonds of our common humanity. Here stood my sister, though we had only just met. Her pain, and the pain of all those in that church and those some 6,000 miles away in Lebanon, was my pain.

With a few gentle murmurs, we ended the interview, and she stepped outside, walking past the television cameraman and the reporter, who were speaking with other parishioners. A thirty-second segment on the 11 oclock news, an article in a local paper both would soon be lost in the torrent of information in which our world is drowning.

But for the people of Lebanon, and for us, the real work of healing and restoration will take years. May God give us the grace to remain steadfast in the task, to which through our oneness in the Lord we are all called.

Firearms and ammunition case in Court | Matangitonga – Matangi Tonga

Firearms and ammunition seized in Tongatapu.

The case against Viliami Malolo Talivakaola (44), who is charged with the importation of prohibited firearms and ammunition allegedly smuggled through in a shipment from the United States, was heard this week at the SupremeCourt.

Hon. Mr Justice Niu is expected to deliver a verdict on August28.

The accused from Vavau pleaded not guilty to importing the prohibited goods, which included one .22 semi-automatic rifle, one .12 shotgun pump action and 1,500 ammunition, namely .22 Remington packed in threeboxes.

The Crown in its opening submission to the Court said on July 3,2019 Police and Customs Officers were inspecting a 4x4 foot cargo box, which belonged to the accused, at the S.F. Oceania Ltd., a cargo agent's warehouse atMaufanga.

The inspection followed after Detective Dog Gemma marked the accused's box at thewarehouse.

Prior to the inspection, Police and Customs officers received a report from the Police in Vavau to inspect the accusedsbox.

The box was shipped from the United States by S.F. Oceania Ltd. to arrive at Tongatapu and then be transferred to Vavau, its approveddestination.

Police found firearms and ammunition inside the accuseds box during their search. The accused was laterarrested.

The Crown also submitted that the accused's defence that he had a license to import a .22 firearm and 600 x .22 ammunition, was not a defence in thiscase.

Brazil & Mxico Six August 2020 Majors – Everything You Need To Know – SiegeGG

Thanks to COVID-19, the Six Major set to be held in the United States can't go on. But, in its place, there will be a set of regional so-called "mini-majors", set to crown regional champions at a smaller scale.

After the APAC North mini-major kicked things off, followed by the Oceania and South Asia mini-majors, now it's LATAM's turn to shine. After the recent changes introduced in the Rainbow 6: Siege esport scenes, LATAM has been divided in three sub-regions -- Brazil, Mxico and South America -- meaning that there are now three different top-tier LATAM leagues. However, only the two first regions will hold a mini-major, with South America excluded.

Here is all you need to know about the next two competitions -- the Brazilian and the Mexican Six August 2020 Majors.

A total of four teams will compete in the Brazilian mini-major, with the first match being played on the 7th of August at 1 PM BRT (UTC-3). The event will see a double-elimination bracket, with the Upper Bracket winner getting a map advantage at the Grand Final, which will be a Best-of-Five (Bo5). All the games prior to the Grand Final will follow a Best-of-Three (Bo3) format.

As such, the top seed, Team oNe, will kick off the major with a game against the fourth-seeded team of FaZe Clan, while the second-seeded Team Liquid will face the third seed of Ninjas in Pyjamas. The semi-finals and the Lower Bracket elimination game are set to be played on the 7th of August, while both bracket's finals are set to be played on the following day. Finally, the Grand Final -- with an Upper Bracket map advantage -- will be played on the 9th of August.

However, let's not forget about Mxico. In the middle of this "Brazilian festival", the current two best rosters in Mxico will get their chance to shine as they will play the Mxico Six August 2020 Major, which will only feature one game. As it is considered to be the Mexican Grand Final, the match will follow a Best-of-Five (Bo5) system, but none of the teams will have a map advantage despite Estral Esports having finished in first place. This game will be played on the 8th of August, just after the Brazilian mini-major Upper Bracket finals.

As we have previously mentioned, the first day will kick off at 1 PM BRT (UTC-3). The second day will follow the same time, while the third will kick off at 3 PM BRT.

The prize purse of US$100,000 for Brazil and US$17,000 for Mxico will be split as follows, with Six Invitational (SI) points also awarded:

Brazil

Mxico

Despite not playing a mini-major, the South American champions of Coscu Army were awarded with US$8,000 and 115 SI Points.

The best four teams in Brazil and the best two in Mxico will be the teams playing for the prize pools mentioned above.

Brazil

Faallz, reduct, LuKid, Rappz, FelipoX, Budega (coach), Vivas (analyst)

Showing off great promise during the whole stage, in first place we have Team oNe. None knew what to expect for sure from this team after the legal battle between the roster and the organisation, which occurred mere weeks before the beginning of Stage 1. These problems led the roster to leave the organisation; however, both parties seemed to resolve their differences and the players then re-signed. Nevertheless, the main player of the roster in that time, SkaDinha, took the decision to leave the team and his place was occupied by Rappz, a player without any competitive experience.

Despite the initial problems, the team showed the nation what they can do. After Liquid's last draw against FaZe Clan, Team oNe confirmed their first place after the conclusion of Stage 1, with their roster the only one having all players rated above 1.0.

Team oNe is also the only team in the top-four that has won against its closest rivals. -- partially against FaZe Clan (7-5, 6-6) and then against Team Liquid (7-3, 7-3). T1 also won 7-0 in Theme Park against NiP, although the game ended in a draw as NiP had won on the first map.

Paluh, nesk, xS3xyCake, psk1, HSnamuringa, Silence (entrenador principal), Sensi (coach), Rafa (manager)

Despite finishing in second place, Team Liquid are most likely the favourites to win the event. With a roster that has been together for over a year now, Liquid has produced some of the best results for a Brazilian team in international events Their Pro League Season 7 win seems a distant memory, but Liquid added another international tournament to their name after winning the OGA PIT celebrated in Croatia, which makes this roster the only Brazilian team to win international tournaments.

They also have recently dominated in Brazil, as they finished the Season 11 in first place and were crowned champions of the last edition of the Brasileiro after winning FaZe Clan (3-2) in the Grand Final. To this dominance, we have to credit two of the best players of the league; Paluh and Nesk with 1.28 and 1.26 ratings, respectively, were the keys to Liquid's performance.

Kamikaze, Psycho, julio, Muzi, pino, BOB (manager)

The finalists of the last Six Invitational started the tournament as the favourite team, however, a very poor start to the season limited their chances. The ninjas drew their first five matches -- out of nine -- in the Brasileiro, leaving them in a very complicated spot after three weeks played. Nevertheless, the team showed great potential as they won against their last three opponents, Santos, INTZ, and Black Dragons and are also the only team in the league that's still unbeaten.

Astro, mav, yoona, ion, live, Ramalho (coach), tgk (manager)

In fourth place we have FaZe Clan. The team has suffered a lot to keep the fourth spot, as they had to fight against the likes of MIBR and W7M until the very last week. Although they are the last of the four teams in the mini-major, FaZe Clan still has not lost a game since their loss against their upcoming opponents, Team oNe (5-7, 6-6).

-

Mexico

XigmaZ, SkMzY, Toski, P1XIE, Fungi, JPR, GOKU (coach)

In first place, we have Estral Esports -- the first Mexican team to confirm its presence at the mini-major. Without any doubts, Estral are the main favourites to win the title as they were unbeaten during the Mexicano, with five wins and only one draw. Out of twelve maps played, Estral has only lost one -- a 4-7 against Pixel Esports on Coastline. Their dominance is also reflected in the round difference of +35, twenty more than their next opponents.

Estral's roster consists of six of the best Mexican players, which is also reflected in their ratings. Five of them are inside the current top-ten list of players of the Mexicano, all of them with ratings over 1.12, lead by Toski (1.27). Fungi, the only player outside the top-ten, has a 1.05 rating, which is still decent.

Vector, Navy, Biz, Raven, Morphed, Puji, Thumperr(coach), FBK (coach)

Timbers' performances in the Mexicano were a bit more messy. The team started with some setbacks, as they lost against Estral in their first game and drew against Chivas in their second. Their first win came in the third round, against Atheris, but after a draw against Pixel their situation got really difficult.

There, a change in the team's mentality mixed with some bad results from their direct rivals gave Timbers second place. Their 2-0 win against Infinity Academy, who lost again the following day against the already-qualified side of Estral Esports, and a partial loss from Pixel against Atheris left Timbers in a very promising place. They just had to win against the bottom team of MeT, and win they did.

The main player in Timbers' roster is Morphed, who has the highest KOST (77%) and the second best rating (1.26) in the league.

To end the summary of the Mexican Grand Final, we have spoken with Rafael "Foxtrot" Jacques, one of the Campeonato Mexicano casters.

Let's focus on the Grand Final first. We've got Timbers, who come after a great end to the league, and Estral, who are still unbeaten as they have only dropped a map. Even though Estral are the favourites to win, do you think that Timbers can upset their opponents?

To be fair, Timbers have a really tough job in front of them, Estral have the best players if we talk about individual performances. Xigmaz and Pixie are our Beaulo and Kanto, and if to that you add Toski's, Skmzy's and Fungi's contributions, the roster would scare anyone. Timbers will need to put everything into the game to win, it's going to be very important that Morphed and Navy have a good day. I think that the game will be decided by their preparation and how far they come in the Bo5 format -- and obviously if they ban Clubhouse.

This is the first season after the Campeonato Mexicano transformed into a professional league with international importance from a simple local league. How do you think this has changed the region?

It has changed everything -- now the teams, the organizations, and even the same league have to make not one but five steps more to show what we have to offer. Now, the whole world will pay attention to us, and despite it being a mini-major, I'm sure that we will make a good impression.

The comparisons are always odious, but it's almost an obligation to ask this. Keeping in mind that the objective in Mxico is to put up a fight against every Brazilian team to make that international jump, do you think that the Mexican region is finally close to that goal?

As I said before, want it or not, the Mexican teams will have to suffer. The first few games against Brazilian teams will be difficult but not impossible contests. One of the things from the Mexican teams is that we always want to complete our objectives. It's going to be a process that I would love to present as a caster. All my love and support to the teams that will be representing Mxico in this and in future occasions.

Make sure to tune in for the games, starting later at 1 PM BRT (UTC-3), as LATAM sets out in search for its Brazilian and Mexican champions. Also, don't forget to check back here for more coverage and follows us onTwitterfor instant updates.
