Pedestrian killed by car driven by K-pop boy band 2AM’s Seulong in Seoul – Manila Bulletin

Im Seulong (Twitter)

K-pop artist Im Seulong, 33, of boy band 2AM is under police investigation after he hit and killed a pedestrian, who was reported to be jaywalking, in South Korea on Aug. 1.

According to the police, the car accident happened at about 11:50 p.m. last Saturday on a road in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul.

Seulong was driving an SUV amid heavy rain when he hit a man in his 50s who was crossing at a red light, according to Korean media. The victim was taken to a hospital but died.

The police found that Seulong was not under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened.

In a statement, Jellyfish Entertainment, Seulongs agency, said We would like to pray for the salvation of the soul of the victim who passed away in the accident and express our deep condolences to the family of the deceased, according to JTBC Plus.

It explained that on August 1, Im Seulong caused a traffic accident due to slippery road conditions while driving. The car he drove collided with a pedestrian crossing the street. Immediately after the accident, Im Seulong took relief measures at the scene, but unfortunately the victim passed away on the way to the hospital.

After receiving the investigation at the police station in the right order, Im Seulong was allowed to return home. However, at present, he is suffering a serious shock both physically and mentally. The accurate results of the police investigation have yet to come out, so we cannot disclose details about this incident. We hope you all will understand, Jellyfish said.

The agency added, However, we know how painful it is for the bereaved family of the victim so we sincerely apologize to the family. Once again, our condolences go to the bereaved family and may the victim rest in peace.

Under Koreas traffic accident law, a driver of a vehicle who commits a crime provided for in Article 268 of the Criminal Act by reason of a traffic accident shall be punished by imprisonment without prison labor for not more than five years or by a fine not exceeding 20 million won [about $16,737 or P821,000].

Article 268, according to the Korea Legislation Research Institute, states that a person who causes the death or injury of another by occupational or gross negligence, shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than five years or by a fine not exceeding 20 million won.

The investigation will determine if Seulong was negligent, taking also into account that the man was jaywalking at the time.

Korean netizens expressed support to Seulong, saying it was not his fault. Some of the comments, according to Netizen Buzz, are: He should not have to apologize for this, the fault lies with the person who jaywalked, Jaywalking in the rain at night theres no way a driver can avoid that and you put your life on the line every time you jaywalk. I feel bad for the driver than the pedestrian in this case.

Seulong debuted in 2AM in 2008. He signed up with Jellyfish Entertainment early this year.

CHAREN: Who is really burning things down? – Odessa American

My friend David French, one of the most admirable voices in America today, argues that conservatives need not vote against Republican senate candidates in order to send a message about Trumpism. I disagree. He writes, "A rage, fury, and a 'burn it all down' mentality is one of the maladies that brought us to the present moment."

This assumes that the reason some plan to evict Republican senators is simply a matter of anger. But voting against a candidate or even a whole party is not nihilism. It's the legal, Constitutional way to express approval or disapproval. The current Republican Party has chosen to become the burn-it-all-down party. The most demoralizing aspect of the past four years has not been that a boob conman was elected president but that one of the two great political parties surrendered to him utterly.

David suggests that voting against Republican senators ignores that they had bad choices.

It's certainly true that Republicans perceived their options to be limited. If they speak up, they say, they will flush their careers down the drain. Look at what happened to Jeff Flake, Mark Sanford and Bob Corker!

But this overstates things. A number of Republicans have stood up to Trump and maintained their electoral viability -- especially when they challenged him on matters in which he has shown little interest, namely public policy. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., for example, voted against the president's USMCA trade agreement and (gasp) wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal explaining his reasoning.

When the president abruptly announced, following a phone call with Turkish leader Recep Erdogan, that he was withdrawing American troops forthwith from Syria, a number of Republicans voiced horror. Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said it would lead to a "slaughter." Sen. Ted Cruz said it would be "DISGRACEFUL." Rep. Liz Cheney called it a "catastrophic mistake that puts our gains against ISIS at risk and threatens America's national security." Senators Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Mitt Romney, R-Utah, Marco Rubio, R-Fla., former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and others weighed in as well.

When the president suggested lifting sanctions on Russia, Senator Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said it would be "horrible" for the United States. And after Gen. James Mattis wrote an op-ed saying that Donald Trump was making a "mockery of the U.S. Constitution," Sen. Lisa Murkowski said: "I was really thankful. I thought General Mattis' words were true, and honest and necessary and overdue."

So, it is possible to speak up about this president and survive. I use that word advisedly, because these Republican officeholders often use words like "kill" or "destroy" or "annihilate" when contemplating what Trump would do to them if they raise their heads too far above the parapet. In fact, all that actually threatened them was the possibility of nasty tweets and the chance that they might lose their seats.

David is right that very few people in any walk of life display courage on anything, though craven Republicans holding House and Senate posts might want to pause from time to time to contemplate the extraordinary valor of protesters in Hong Kong, Iran and Egypt who continue to put their freedom and sometimes their lives at risk by taking to the streets. And should being an elected official really be one's "life work"?

As noted above, Republicans have criticized the president on policy matters, sometimes even harshly. Where they have shrunk into their shells was on matters that are even more critical to the health of our republic. They have, by their silence, given assent to his cruelty, his assaults on truth, his dangerous flirtations with political violence and his consistent demolition of institutions.

Institutions are like scaffolding. When a society's institutions are weakened, the whole edifice can come crashing down.

Donald Trump undermined the institution of the free press, urging his followers to disbelieve everything except what came from the leader. He weakened respect for law enforcement and the courts, suggesting that he was the victim of a "deep state" and that "so-called judges" need not be respected. He scorned allies and toadied to dictators. He has cast doubt on the integrity of elections. He ran the executive branch like a gangster, demanding personal loyalty and abusing officials such as the hapless Jeff Sessions, who merely followed ethics rules. He ignored the law to get his way on the border wall. He violated the most sacred norms of a multiethnic society by encouraging racial hatred. He made the U.S. guilty of separating babies from their mothers.

Elected officials, terrified of their own constituents, have cowered and temporized in the face of a truly unprecedented assault on democratic values. They believed that they were powerless and acted accordingly. Since they were powerless when it counted, perhaps we should make it official?

Joe Peppercorn looks to the sky on forthcoming Darkening Stars – Columbus Alive

In advance of a CAPA livestream performance, the Whiles and Beatles marathon frontman talks about making a new album culled from tunes written during his 2017 '52 songs in 52 weeks' project

Around noon on January 20, 2017, Joe Peppercorn was at Giant Eagle drinking coffee while his kids scampered around the grocery stores play area. Just a few weeks earlier, the musician had given himself an ambitious challenge: Write a new song every week, all year long 52 songs in 52 weeks.

While his kids were occupied on the playground, Peppercorn decided to work on lyrics for that week's song. Nearby, a TV was broadcasting the inauguration of Donald Trump. Glancing at a newspaper next to him, Peppercorn noticed a headline about the death of Gene Cernan, the last astronaut to walk on the moon. Nothing felt good.

I'm sitting there in a Starbucks in Giant Eagle, with super awful lighting, watching [Trump] give this horrifying, nightmare inaugural address about how awful everything is, and I look over at the newspaper and I was just like, This is so depressing, said Peppercorn, who managed to transform the ominous scene into a thing of beauty.

Theres no one left who walked on the moon/Darkness falling at the break of noon, Peppercorn sings on Walked on the Moon, the leadoff track on the musicians forthcoming album, Darkening Stars. The song's chorus is bathed in the harmonies of his Sgt. Peppercorns Marathon bandmates, who have developed a palpable musical chemistry after years of performing every song in the Beatles catalog in one day (not to mention the countless rehearsals in Peppercorns basement leading up to the event).

Peppercorn completed the 52-song project at the end 2017, and over time he culled the tracks down to 14 songs that he re-recorded last year with some of his Beatles bandmates: bassist Chris Bolognese, drummer Jesse Cooper, guitarist Jon Wink, guitarist Tommy Young, multi-instrumentalist Phil Cogley and engineer/guitarist Jake Remley, with additional contributors adding parts in the last few months (several of the musicians overlap with Peppercorns other band, the Whiles). Peppercorn will perform some of theDarkening Stars songs at a piano tonight (Thursday, Aug. 6) at 7 p.m. in a livestream event tied to Apart Together, CAPAs series of virtual concerts.

Revisiting the 2017 songs after some time away, Peppercorn was pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoyed them. Some he didnt even remember writing. It's almost like hearing someone else, he said. Looking back, the songs are all about this need to attach to something and feel some sort of meaning when it feels like there's this horrifying nihilism that surrounds you all the time. If I go on my phone and start reading news, I can get swallowed up and end up in these really dark places where you're imagining this Mad Max situation, like, How am I gonna hide my kids in a bunker?

References to celestial bodies are threaded throughout Darkening Stars, which Peppercorn attributes to the time he spent staring at the night sky on evening runs and the books he was reading at the time. When I was writing the lyrics, I was reading ancient Roman poetry, which, a lot of the time, they're talking about how insignificant they feel looking up at the moon or the stars. Its comforting, and then also it makes you feel like you're nothing, said Peppercorn, who, over the course of previous Whiles album Mercury Ghost and the forthcoming Darkening Stars, has grown increasingly comfortable with the idea of making himself smaller.

Every breath is yours/Every move is yours/All of my blood are yours/I don't need myself anymore, he sings on I Dont Need Myself Anymore, one of several songs inextricably linked to Peppercorns roles as husband and father. I was just embracing the moments and my situation, he said. It's not sexy to be writing songs while being a dad, but I think it's more interesting than a dad trying to be sexy.

Peppercorn plans to officially release Darkening Stars, which is currently being mixed and mastered by Jon Chinn, by the end of the year, and possibly much sooner in digital form. Hes convinced the album contains some of the best songs hes ever written (hes not wrong), from beautiful ballads (Lean Against Me, Never Be Ready to Say Goodbye) and shimmery, jangle-pop sing-alongs (Floor of My Heart) to Guided By Voices-indebted fist-pumpers (She Sparkles).

Plus, the record provides a needed dose of musical excitement to keep him sane especially as the possibility of a December Sgt. Peppercorn's Marathon looks less and less likely.

My 20s were defined by the Whiles and trying to establish some sort of music career, and that ended up working in certain ways and really failing in others. And then my 30s were defined by raising children, and the Beatles show started when I was 30. And now I'm 40, Peppercorn said. Now that the kids are in school, I kind of want my 40s to be defined by making music. Ive been making a lot more of it than I ever have in my life, and I think I'm better than I've ever been.

World Teacher and Happy Science Founder Ryuho Okawa Introduces Four Principles of Happiness that Transcends Race and Religion in His New Book…

The Laws of Happiness

NEW YORK (PRWEB) August 05, 2020

The Laws of Happiness, first published in Japan in 2004, the new edited English version will be published on August 28, 2020 by World Teacher and Happy Science founder Ryuho Okawa. The Laws of Happiness represents the Four Principles of Happiness which Okawa suggests that all people regardless of their religious or spiritual background should practice in order to pursue true happiness which continues from this world to the next. It is a work in which, as the title suggests, the nature of human happiness is explored at length in a practical and spiritual manner.

Okawa states outright at the beginning of the book that happiness is a decision rather than a quality dependent upon environmental factors. No objective or fixed circumstances can guarantee happiness, and instead happiness is a feeling that is innately generated. Part of the process of learning to be happy exists in accordance with learning from ones experiences and embracing the reality that each person is given their own workbook of problems to which they alone have the answers.

The balance of maintaining happiness along the path of progress in life is explored at length in this work. Okawa states that the seed of unhappiness exists in moments of happiness; in other words, where there are good and successful times, challenging times will inevitably follow as life proceeds onwards. To become aware of this fact during the happy moments is a key to self-improvement whereby ones weaknesses can be recognized and strengthened in preparation for the future as a means to preventing future unhappiness; all of this requires that one be willing to shed their old self as life progresses. Shortcomings are a positive indication that there is still room for growth all throughout the lifespan.

There are inevitable changes that will occur for all people throughout their life, and adaptations must be made. For example, while younger people benefit from having high energy, they also may suffer from a lack of knowledge and wisdom; as a person ages, they will have less energy but more knowledge, and it is such that changes need not be a source of unhappiness provided one can embrace the opposite strengths that come with ageing. Another example is that a person who is very spiritual benefits from developing practical and worldly insights: whatever the greatest strength a person possesses, they can benefit from developing that which is the opposite of it, and such can be a source of happiness.

Okawa provides a teaching that throughout life each person will gradually see the world through two different eyes: the differentiating eye and the eye of equality. The differentiating eye learns to distinguish the differences between all people and other living things, while the eye of equality learns to see the beauty in that which is common to all things. The former of these allows for the recognition of the individual purposes and roles of all things in the world, while the latter of these allows for the development of compassion and empathy; the continuous development and refinement of these two forms of vision, which Okawa states are the manner in which God views the world, are a key to the path of enlightenment.

There is an extensive discussion in the book concerning finding happiness in work, which is something that many people struggle with. While it is ideal that one works in the area that one is most passionate about, such is not always possible, and when it is not, a change of attitude can bring about happiness even in less than ideal work situations. It is possible, given the limitless potential of humans, to always be working towards improvement in the area of ones work. Such is accomplished by a combination of factors, and Okawa provides the practical advice of reading to obtain new information, writing ones thoughts to sort them out, listening to other people in order to learn their thoughts, and thinking in such a manner that ones thoughts become increasingly developed. Okawa likewise provides several excellent methods for generating and developing new ideas into realities, and emphasizes that ideas which endeavor to contribute toward the collective tend to manifest greater success.

Okawa presents The Four Principles of Human Happiness, which are the practice of overcoming suffering through love, wisdom, self-reflection and progress; these may be understood as a contemporary version of Buddhist teachings on enlightenment that are suitable for all modern people. These are explored at depth and with considerable insight that touches upon a combination of spiritual, psychological and environmental factors that impact all people in some way. Some key points include all people want to be loved, no person is 100% perfect, self-reflection is the easiest method to combat negative spiritual influences, and that because ones thoughts become ones reality, it is beneficial to concentrate upon positive thoughts in order to manifest a happy life. Ultimately, it is stated that humans benefit the most from seeking the kind of happiness that leads to the happiness of others.

An extensive introduction to Happy Science is provided toward the end of "The Laws of Happiness" and provides an overview of the history and progress of this new religion. It may be stated that "The Laws of Happiness" as a whole is an introduction to the type of limitless, positive and happy thinking that is characteristic of Happy Science. Many of the teachings provided in this work are akin to a modern approach to Buddhist, Christian and other spiritual teachings, and are accessible to all people in the world regardless of their religious background. In a world where all humans desire to be happy and most people struggle to achieve or maintain a state of happiness, "The Laws of Happiness" provides the answers that many are looking for.

The Laws of Happiness is available for pre-order at all major bookstores nationwide and online retailers, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

In the time of plague, a devil is testing America: Letter – The News Leader

DAVID COLTON, Waynesboro Published 1:12 a.m. ET Aug. 7, 2020

Imagine a great nation that has lost its moral direction. God in his wisdom decides to test the people of this nation to see if they are worthy of his love. He brings forth a plague which they can survive if they follow just one of his commandments The Golden Rule: All things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them. (Matthew 7:12)

In other words, people can be selfish and think only of themselves, but if they do, they will spread the plague to others (i.e. not follow CDC guidelines for wearing a mask and social distancing) or they can do the right thing to reduce spread of the plague.

However, Satan, seeing an opportunity to disrupt Gods plan, decides to complicate things. Being a sly, cunning, devious, manipulative, lying conman, Satan selects a mortal with similar attributes to convince the people not to follow The Golden Rule. This person is the nations leader and he uses his position to sway the people and lies to them about how bad the plague really is.

Satan, of course, is overjoyed. Not only are many of the nations people ignoring Gods commandment, in rebuffing Gods love and guidance, they are rejecting their own salvation.

As a consequence of their actions, the nation suffers. The nation has the largest number of cases of the plague and the highest mortality rate in the world. Many people die and many people lose their jobs and their homes.

The great nation is no longer great in the eyes of the world. Satan delights in his triumph and the nations leader plays golf. And the nations leader continues to do Satans work by dividing the people of the country, one against another, as well asdividing his followers from their love of God.

Fortunately, the story is not over. God gave the people the ability to choose right from wrong. They can continue to follow Satans servant and believe his lies, or they can listen to the prophets (medical experts) and do things for the benefit of their fellow man.

JCPenney is selling off its historic 118-year-old location in Kemmerer, Wyoming, marking the end of an era for the department store brand.

The first-ever JCPenney store was known as "The Golden Rule" and named by founder James Cash Penney as an ode to the popular idiom "treat others as you would like to be treated." The store was later rebranded to JCPenney in 1914, the same year the retailer erected its headquarters in New York City.

The 8,000 square-foot flagship Kemmerer location located approximately 100 miles northwest of Salt Lake City is known as the "mother store" for the chain, according to the property highlights pamphlet available online. The town is home to just under 4,000 residents and is where Penney first got his start in 1902.

The Importance Of Being Overly Kind During COVID-19 – Forbes

Closeup shot of a group of businesspeople sitting together at a table and holding hands

Being kind is never a bad idea. But as we and our companies weather COVID-19, we have to practice radical kindness.

Everyone has been affected by the pandemic in one way or another. Neither my team nor the entrepreneurs I know have struggled with anxiety like this. My kids are worried about returning to school.

Truly, my thoughts go out to them. Although I cant make the virus go away, I can do the next best thing: double down on kindness.

As a business leader and as a human being, I believe now is the time to be overly kind. Heres why:

In the last two months, Ive seen more vulnerability than I have in my entire life. Ive seen entrepreneurs break down, employees lose their livelihoods, and friends face serious illness.

Now isnt the time to stand on the sidelines. If youre in a position to do so, lend a hand not because you expect something in return, but because you know people need it.

Even simple gestures go a long way. Point people whove been laid off to new opportunities. Shoot a quick text to that aunt or uncle whos sick. Offer to partner with that small business down the street thats struggling.

I do a lot of keynote speaking. When events were cancelled, most hosts did the right thing. A few, however, left me out in the cold.

In one case, a company didnt even tell me the event was cancelled. They then demanded that I return initial fees after Id spent my own time and money preparing for the speech. They refused to even speak with me on the phone to discuss options.

Contrast that with how a staffing company that serves the real estate sector, JWilliams Staffing Solutions, treated me. The owner, JoAnne, called me weeks prior to the event. She expressed empathy for speakers in my situation, and together, we looked for ways to make up for the missed event.

Each of those experiences left a lasting impression on me. You can probably guess which one lost my respect and which one gained it.

You should never stop working to improve yourself. Expressing kindness, especially when its difficult, is a great strategy.

In uncertain times like these, its tempting to put ourselves first. But if we stretch our limits as human beings, we learn just how intrinsically rewarding it can be to do the right thing. Think of the COVID-19 pandemic as a test: Challenge yourself to practice one more act of kindness each day. Doing so helps you approach life with a more positive outlook, which not only makes you happier but also shows others the power of helpfulness.

The goal of being kind should never be solely to make a sale. With that said, nothing reflects better on your business than kindness. People are more likely to shop and partner with a brand that they believe cares for them personally.

Think, too, about the effect on your employees. People would much prefer to work in a positive, uplifting workplace than a demeaning one. Going the extra mile to be overly kind attracts and retains top talent for your business. Dont underestimate the cultural value of kindness.

While COVID-19 has affected my company, I have been much more fortunate than some. It might not always be that way. The future guarantees nothing, and I may not be as fortunate the next time around.

Practice the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Being good to others has a way of coming back around.

Again, Im not suggesting you help others out of selfish reasons. Rather, doing whats right in the moment will put you top of mind. When the day comes that youre the one in need, wouldnt you want others to extend that same helping hand?

The most important thing you can do in this life is to be kind. Never has that been clearer than during the COVID-19 crisis. The fact that kindness is also good for business is just the cherry on top.

Julie Chen Moonves On The Season Premiere Of Big Brother: All Stars: Its Fun But Yet Its Very Real – CBS Boston

Big Brother: All Starscomes to CBS this Wednesday, August 5th at 9/8c. The 22nd season of the worldwide phenomenon comes with a special twist as all 16 houseguests will be returning players unveiled during the premiere. Julie Chen Moonves returns as host for this unique season that saw the houseguests spend weeks in isolation before entering the house due to the coronavirus.

CBS Matt Weiss spoke to Chen Moonves ahead of the shows premiere to discuss the new season, the new house and answer the question, are you smarter than a fifth grader?

MW: First of all, how have you been holding up the last couple monthswith quarantine.Howhaveyou been doing?

JCM:Well, how much timedoyou have, Matt? [Laughs] In a nutshell, home schooling and my 87-year-old mom, who was on March 1st going to test out living with us for about three weeks because of my father, who was 89, unexpectedly passed away.

So, its like, mom do you really want to live alone? That testturned into five months. She just left like three weeks ago to go back to her retirementcommunity, where God bless, shes enjoying it. But it was a little bit of craziness we were all learning how to handle that.

With the home schooling I went from being a Tiger Mom tobeinglike, hey Troy, do you want to watchTiger King with me and dad for a midnight showing? Luckily,he wasnt interested. That being said,I did hear him singingthe CarolBaskin song one day and I said things have got to change.Im building back structure.Im going back to work.Im putting a structure in. Were slowly pulling it together. [Laughs]

MW: A learning experience for everyone.

JCM:Hes a rising 5th grader and hesstarting school in a couple of weeks. I realized how not tech savvy I am. Doyou remember that show are you smarter thana 5thgrader?Turns out Im not even assmart as afourth grader.Im going back to Big Brother where I know how to do what I do.

MW: [Laughs] Speaking ofBig Brother, this will be a season like never before. What can fans expect from this all-new season?

JCM:Yougottathink about it.Big Brother, weve been on for 20 years, this is our 22nd season.Anyone who doesnt know the concept of the show, you basically take six strangers lock them into a house and they have to coexist for up to three months. Each week voting out one of their own, while theyre all competing with one another, only one person takeshomethe half $1,000,000 grand prize. We were the originalquarantine!

Whats different this season are two main things because of the pandemic, we brought in former Big Brother houseguests, anAll-Star cast. Were bringing back eight of the most memorable women and eight of the mostmemorablemen for various reasons. We have past winners, past people who almost got the half $1,000,000 but didnt, people who came in 11th place but due to circumstancesgot bouncedtoo early; they all have something to prove.

We had to bring in these 16 houseguests to our area of Los Angeles, whether we had to fly them across the country or some alreadylivein the area, then put them up in homes by themselves for weeks. During that time we weretesting them on a regular basis to make sure they donthave the virus so that we canput them into the Big Brother house.Once we threw all these 16 past houseguests in that Big Brother house might bethe safesthousein the world! Once they go in they dont have any contact with the outside world.

There are no camera operators inside the house. All the camera operators are on the other side of the glass or were using cameras that are locked down in various corners and walls. The good news is we were kind of designed to do a show duringquarantine.Itsgoing to look exactly like how you saw it last year. Its not going to look like aZoom showbecause its not.

MW: A bunch of people locked up in a house for three months, the show is more relatable than ever!

JCM: Exactly, we were ahead of our time, weve been doing this for 20 years, we are the original quarantine. We joke but when it comes to this season and taking precautions were not taking anything lightly.

MW: Great timing as well to be able to provide some normalcy for fans of the show to see something new yet familiar.

JCM:I think that its going to be a nice break. We could all use a little bit of a break from all the drama but not stick our heads in the sand to whats happening out in the world.Thesehouseguests,Im sure, theyre going to talk about what thequarantinehas done to their families.Alot of these returning houseguests went in single when they first did it and now some of them are married, some have children, theres a lot to offer there.

I think its going to be perfect break we kindofneed, without ignoring the reality of the world were living in right now.Heres the hope, the hope is whether youre a returning Big Brother fan or youre new to it youre going towatchthis andlearn, cant we all get along? We all want the same thing. We all want to be safe.We all want a vaccine. We all want to be working. What can we do?What smallthing canwe eachdo, small or big to help get to that common goal we all want.We all want to be heard. We all want to be respected. How about we all start by practicing the Golden Rule; treat others the way you want to be treated.

MW: Absolutely! I think the last few months have really shown people whats important and allowed folks to examine themselves.

JCM:Its pretty simple. I have to tell you, we should all take this time just to lean intoGod. Im telling you whatever behavior have, you have to think for a second, now is God looking down at me and being like yeah thats whoI created you to be,thats how you should behave. I learn my lessons all the time like when I lose my patience with my 10-year-old, I have to remind myself patience is a virtue; this is not who God created me to be. I just need to [deep breath].

MW:I couldnt agree more. Circling back to Big Brother and some changes that needed to be made for this season. Were there any major changes you had to make as the host?

JCM: Weve had to do a lot of things.Everyone has had to take tests before returning to work and we all have to be masked but when you see me on TVbroadcasting,I wont be wearing a mask. Each week when someone getsevicted, they wont be shaking my hand wewill be keeping a distance.

If you were to pull the cameras wide and see you know everyone who works on the show, theyre all wearing a mask.No live audience this season for obvious reasons, but if youre a long-time fan of the show, we didnt have a live audience from season two to I think like season seven or eight.

I really feel safe about going back to work and happy about it.Weve taken the precautions and yet its going to be not only a safe environment but a fun environment for people at home to watch.

MW: And when people are watching in their homes theyll be looking at a brand new Big Brother house, the reveal came out online earlier this week and it looks incredible. Where does this house stack up to you all-time in Big Brother history?

JCM: Well this is the first year Ive never gone into the house.Usually I bring cameras into a house tour, but for obvious reasons I did not.I got a tour throughZoom and I was blown away. This house celebrates some of the most memorable moments and former houseguests in the history of the show. Twenty years and 21seasons, plus the two celebrity runs and one version that was just online.Whether youre new to the show or youveonlywatchedthe last few seasons,or youve been there since season one, youre going to see the history.

I told Scott Storey, who has been doing the house and the show maybe since season two or maybe sinceseason1, I said Scott you have to submit for an Emmy this year, it looks so good.I never wantitto change again. Lets make it amuseum, letsadd more memorable houseguests.

MW: And now last question before I let you go, what message do you have for fans heading into season 22 on Wednesday night?

JCM: So this is what I always think about Big Brother, its fun butyetits very real life. When youre watching it, youreprobably not going to love everyone that you see in the house.Hopefully you can find outthis one facet of that person, whereyou have compassion for thatperson,or you relate to that person.Lets all watched this summer and have a good time, but lets also learn, lets not be so quick to judge one another and lets try and give everyone in our world,in our life, and these houseguests,if youre watching them, the benefit of the doubt.

I think its important for everyone to remember if you communicate in a respectful gentle manner you will get far in the Big Brother house and in life.Treat others with respect. If you dont agree with someone we should respectfully and peacefully agree to disagree. Lets bring forward the better sides of all of us.I gotwartsandflaws;we all do.Letsallput our best foot forward.

MW: Very poignant advice for everyone out there. Thank you so much for the time today Julie, always a pleasure speaking with you. All the best with the new season and with the home schooling!

JCM: God bless you, stay safe. Thank you Matt!

How to spot fake emails and texts from the real ones – Yorkshire Post

LifestyleIf even Barack Obama and the heads of Apple, Microsoft and Amazon can fall victim to hackers, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Saturday, 8th August 2020, 11:45 am

The recent revelation that all of them, amongst other prominent Twitter users, had been the victims of a fraud concerning the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, exposed just how hard it is to spot genuine messages from take ones.

But for every one of these attention-grabbing cases, there are thousands that fly under the publicity radar. The worrying thing is that the hoaxers are getting more and more convincing.

It used to be easy to spot a scam: emails that purported to be from a financially embarrassed Nigerian prince, or addressed to Dear esteemed customer had obviously come from people up to no good.

But the one that arrived on my phone the other week took longer to decipher. The mobile network O2 had been unable to process my bill, it said, and that if I were to avoid fees for late payment I should update my payment details. The link it gave appeared to contain an genuine O2 address but of course it was nothing of the sort. It led to a clone of O2s site which had been put there to harvest the login details of anyone who cared to type them in.

No-one knows how many other people received the same message, but the consumer group Which? said it knew of many, and that customers of the GiffGaff network had been targeted in exactly the same way, a few months earlier.

Action Fraud, the national reporting centre for cyber crime, says another scam in current circulation advises recipients that they are eligible for a free TV licence as a result of the Covid pandemic. Those who fall for it are taken to a site that looks exactly like the real TV Licensing site.

This business of cloning websites is not confined to collecting sign-in details. Action Fraud also says that more than 16m has been spent on copies of shopping sites which collect the money but dont deliver the goods. The sites most at risk of cloning are those aimed at 18-26 year-olds, with victims in Leeds, Sheffield and elsewhere. Amazon is among those also targeted in a practice known in the industry as phishing.

So how can you reasonably tell which of your messages are genuine? The golden rule is that anything which arrives in your inbox, either by email or text, which invites you to click a link to an official site, is almost certainly bogus. No respectable company, least of all one that collects money from you, will ever send you such a message, for exactly the same reason that hackers will.

But while never clicking a link in an email or text message is good advice, its not always possible to heed. Thats why you should look for the padlock symbol next to the address bar on any website that prompts you for your account details. Its present on phone browsers as well as on PCs and it tells you that the owner of the site has registered it with an electronic key which proves ownership of it. If you dont see the padlock, dont use the site.

If youre worried that you have inadvertently entered your details on a bogus site, log into the real one and change your password immediately. And check your statements for any transactions you dont recognise.

You can also try installing an app like Call Blocker UK on your phone. This doesnt intercept problem texts but it does try to shield you from malicious phone calls, using its own database of suspicious numbers, and optionally sends you updates about current scams. We have yet to hear if Mr Obama has signed up to receive them.

Autonomous robotics for the poultry shed – The Poultry Site

It can be a constant helper in the barns, says Jack Kilian, who designed the robot. I dont think it would ever replace a person because a farmer can do things a robot never could, but it will definitely be able to help them keep an extra eye on their flock.

Kilian is an electrical engineer who recently completed his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. His business partner, Jack Buendorf, is a maths and economics student still at university at St Olaf College, also in Minnesota. He handles the business end of things both are in their twenties.

While still in its developmental phase, the sturdy four-wheeled robot that stands a little more than 60cm tall will be able to turn bedding, detect poultry disease and mortality through video and audio devices and alert the farmer to any problems it comes across remotely and automatically. Eventually, they plan to add a mechanism for moving mortalities to an area selected by the farmer for disposal. Currently, operators can remotely log into the robot and drive it from anywhere that internet is available. The system can determine where it is in the barn and has video capabilities, and the tiller is being tested, says Buendorf.

In January, Kilian competed against more than 50 other entries to win $12,500 (10,267) in the Ag Tech Challenge put on by Red Wing Ignite. The non-profit organisation fuels economic development by working with key sectors of the community to spur innovation by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and students, according to the organisations website. This provided seed money for the prototype.

Kilian was joined by Buendorf in the spring. The pair were brought together by Adam Gettings, a serial entrepreneur who co-founded Rover Robotics, the company that designs the robotic platform on which the Poultry Patrol robot is built. Kilian used the Rover's chassis and built a new computer hardware system on to it. The project spun off from a robot called The Wild Goose Chaser that did exactly that: chased geese off lawns. It was a project from Digi Labs, a tech incubator, where Kilian works.

Now, Poultry Patrol is among 21 finalists in a worldwide competition by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research and the McDonalds Corporation to automate farms and improve animal welfare. Kilian and Buendorf will find out in November if Poultry Patrol is one of the four projects selected to receive a $500,000 (410,680) grant. The competition is aimed at the broiler chicken industry and is focused on gait scores.

Were going to be using computer-vision techniques to track the gait of the bird, says Kilian. With the robotic platform well have more opportunities to look at the birds compared to something like a stationary camera, and since the robot could do all these other things it seems like it would be an easy sell.

It can also be used to detect disease and mortalities through thermal imaging, says Kilian. If a broiler chickens legs are hot, it could indicate a bacterial infection. If the birds temperature is particularly low, its a mortality. And this could all be done while the rover is going about its business tilling the bedding, or doing other activities, he says.

The fact that the robot gets the birds moving is also a plus since the only way to evaluate a birds health is to get it to move, says Buendorf, and their robot can autonomously measure that movement and tell you if its a healthy bird. The robot is a good size for poultry barns because it can easily manoeuvre along the feed lines without issues, but is large enough to get the birds moving.

The robot could also detect disease through other methods like feather discoloration, missing feathers, burns on their breasts and even respiratory issues via audio recording. If a bird is coughing due to a respiratory issue all of a sudden you have a robot that can immediately say theres a biohazard in the barn, says Buendorf.

While there are a few other companies working in the robotics space that are focused on the poultry industry Octopus Robots, Metabolic Robots and Tibot Technologies Kilian and Buendorf believe Poultry Patrol will differentiate itself because of it ruggedness, maximised utility and affordability. Multitasking is a key. We plan to have our robot conduct multiple tasks all at once, says Buendorf. Octopus is focused on sanitation and tilling, TIBOT is focused on movement and Metabolic is focused on FCR improvement. We hope our robot can do all these tasks and more, such as mortality removal and computer vision welfare reporting.

Additionally, by building onto the extremely rugged Rover Robotics chassis they were able to skip years of mechanical and electrical engineering development, which will translate to a lower price point, according to Buendorf. We have no idea what our pricing model will be, but we can be sure it will be lower than our competition, he says.

Their prototype is currently being tested at the turkey farm of John Zimmerman, outside of Northfield, Minnesota. I like to be open to trying out different things, says Zimmerman on a phone call. I like to experiment. I like technology. I offered my barns and assistance if they wanted to test things out, so we ended up with a robot in the barn.

There were concerns early on about how the turkeys would react to having a robot driving around the barn, but the birds seemed unphased. The turkeys arent bothered by it at all, says Zimmerman. We thought it would take some getting used to but theyre not scared of it in any way shape or form. They move out of its way and dont scatter or pile.

Zimmerman sees the robot first and foremost as a management tool. As we move towards antibiotic-free production our management has to be stepped up, he says. Having another set of eyes and ears through sensors in the barn at all times would be incredibly valuable in detecting diseases or other issues earlier than before because you dont have the luxury of time any more. We have to catch things incredibly quickly if were going to treat [the birds] with something other than antibiotics.

Zimmerman is also interested in the potential for physical actions tilling, moving mortalities believing thats where there would be a measurable return on investment. I think theyre going to get there, he says. Its just a matter of how and when and what the price point is going to be. Im very interested in it.

Buendorf and Kilian get that theyre newbies to the poultry industry, which has given them a sense of responsibility to produce their technology correctly, which means relying on the expert guidance of seasoned industry professionals to develop a product that is going to maximise their utility and efficiency, according to Buendorf.

That is where our team feels responsibility: to deliver reliable technology that has the ability to make production more efficient, safe and enjoyable for all parties involved, especially the birds, says Buendorf.

He believes Poultry Patrol can expand across the entire poultry industry from measuring angular limb deformities for breeders to automatically collecting eggs for the egg industry. We want to solve as many problems as we can, he says. Kilian sees the potential across agriculture.

Being from the Midwest and being from the technical side I think there are a lot of opportunities [for things] that could be improved through robotics, says Kilian. We really like the idea of robotics in ag in general. We just want to keep finding other applications.

Robotics to play bigger role in healthcare – Chinadaily USA

Medical staff use a 5G intelligent medical robot for diagnosis procedures at Shanghai General Hospital in June. [Photo by Yin Liqin/For China Daily]

Industry experts, scholars and medical specialists voiced their optimism toward employing artificial intelligence within a broader range of medical-use scenarios during the just-concluded World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2020.

The third of its kind in Shanghai, where AI medicine constituted a key pillar of discussions, witnessed the inauguration of a medical AI committee under China's AI Industrial Alliance, the unveiling of global medical AI research platform Med-Net as well as the publication of a white paper on worldwide AI medical development.

Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai Health Commission, said the 114 medical AI companies in the country have helped form industrial clusters in Beijing, the Yangtze River Delta region and Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

"Despite their relatively late start, the companies have made strides in screening and prediction of diseases, medical imaging, case and literature analysis, new drug discovery and other functions," Wu said.

The development plan for the new generation of AI issued by the State Council has set a target of having core industries reach a market value of 150 billion yuan ($21.5 billion) by 2020. The medical sector is estimated to account for one-fifth of that amount.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts are training their sights on how AI can help improve the public health system through enhanced epidemic research, genetic testing and drug development.

Ge Junbo, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the cardiology department at Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, proposed that AI should lead the construction of medical scenarios, and that AI could help doctors achieve more accurate treatment in complex operations in the future.

"The diagnosis and treatment model of AI plus human experts will surpass our current traditional diagnosis and treatment model," he said. "Ultimately, it will help improve our understanding of diseases and change our current management model of disease cognition, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and chronic diseases."

Zhang Wenhong, director of Huashan Hospital's department of infectious diseases, called for a speedier concentration of public health data currently scattered across all medical institutions.

"The combination of online and offline data (and not just medical data) should form a comprehensive system and create a warning mechanism that serves to determine the vulnerability of a city should a pandemic occur," he said.

Qiao Xin, co-founder and CEO of AI company Deepwise, said:"AI and 5G technologies have developed rapidly in recent years, and I believe that in five years' time, there will be more medical services that can reach the basic level of general practitioners and provide services to more patients via the cloud."

French pharmaceutical company Sanofi is piloting the use of AI in streamlining doctors' online consultation processes.

"By teaming up with Chinese AI company Emotibot, we have come up with a platform where doctors with auto-reply functions can turn spoken language into structured language for AI to understand in real time and give a response, which saves a lot of trouble for physicians," said Jerry Gao, an innovation manager for internet hospitals at Sanofi China.

Report: 80 Percent of Restaurant Jobs Could be Taken Over by Robots – The Spoon

More than 80 percent of restaurant jobs, including cooking, serving and prepping, could be potentially be taken over by automation, according to restaurant consulting firm Aaron Allen & Associates.

Pizza Magazine was first to report on this, writing:

Aaron Allen & Associates shared a graphic proposing that 82 percent of restaurant positions could be automated. The majority of them, or 51 percent, would be server positions. Fifty-seven percent of fast-food and counter workers (or 3.2 million) could be replaced, and the same goes for 38 percent of waiters and waitresses. Twenty-one percent of cooking and food prep positions also could be automated, the company asserts.

Factors that could drive this widespread adoption of automation include continued labor shortage issues for restaurants and the COVID-19 pandemic.

We write about food robots a lot here at The Spoon, and while that 82 percent number is certainly daunting, its not completely surprising. Prior to the pandemic, sufficient staffing was an issue for restaurants as many potential workers preferred driving for Uber or doing some other form of gig work that allowed them to set up their own hours.

Thanks to the pandemic, the U.S. is dealing with massive amounts of unemployment, so finding people to work may not be as big an issue in the short term (though there is a debate about workers making more money via the stimulus than at their job). But the bigger problem now is the number of restaurants closing down dine in operations or shuttering altogether, reducing the number of jobs in the industry overall.

COVID accelerated the push towards off-premises dining, which requires a different kind of staffing set up. You dont need servers if there are no customers sitting at tables to serve. And if a dining room is open, there will be fewer people eating in it to accommodate social distancing.

But even then, COVID has us re-thinking the amount of human-to-human contact as we get our food. We wont know what the lasting impact of the pandemic on our psyche will be, but there is a good chance we will be more wary of strangers and more cognizant of the number of people who touch our food.

This is another reason why we could see more robots in restaurants. Already, a number of companies like Bear Robotics, Keenon Robotics, and Pudu Technology make server robots that can autonomously shuttle food and empty dishes back and forth from the kitchen. Then there is Flippy from Miso Robotics, which can grill burgers and work the deep fryer. White Castle recently announced that it was piloting Flippy at one of its Chicago locations. Theres also Picnic robots, which can assemble 200 pizzas in an hour.

There have always been deep societal concerns around automation, especially within the restaurant industry, which in addition to be a career many people are passionate about, also serves as an accessible first job for lots of different people. Robots taking more than 80 percent of those jobs will have massive ramifications for the country, the labor force and our collective future.

Now the coronavirus is upending those conversations. There are still issues around equity and the ability for people to find work and training if a robot takes their job, but there is the added wrinkle of what is economical for restaurants to stay in business and what people are comfortable with in their dining experiences.

Now, as a gift to their fans, they have dropped their full performance from A State Of Trance 950.

This is a huge milestone to celebrate for the duo as they are typically quiet about what they release. This particular Rank 1 live set is extremely unheard of, especially since it has four unreleased tunes. Right next to some of their biggest tracks like Airwave and the remix of Superstring by Cygnus X, is the fan favorite exclusive single, Predictive Memory. These also take place alongside the unreleased hits of the future, Transatlantic Communication, No Name, and Paris Nice Cannes.

Rank 1 is highly respected for making their own success in the modern music industry. They tend to diverge from social media and aim to tell their unique stories through music only. This makes them quite famous and mysterious among the electronic music scene. Most importantly, they put a high level of care into their music and never release a subpar piece. Their most recent release We Finally Met came out in 2019 and was a collaboration with Marco V.

Ghost in the Shell, the 1995 original based on the manga, paints a world where cyborgs run amok and artificial intelligence has become smart enough to argue like ancient Greek philosophers. for that matter, a lot of the dialogue inGhost in the Shellwill haunt the viewers and challenge their perception of existence. These are 10 of those quotes.

The very glue that defines a person or even a society is a record of their past, without history or memory, a sentient being is nothing.

Yet, memory-- even when jotted down on paper or recorded, is still hard to define. At best, they're hazy-- sometimes inaccurate translations of the electrical signals in the brain. Or it could be just the Puppet Master trying to argue that his cognitive functions are better.

Charles Darwin will definitely agree with this though he might take it back once he sees who said it. It was the Puppet Master, the main "villain" ofGhost in the Shell. Being an A.I. who became sentient and conscious, some might consider it a new species.

Except it's more like an anomaly of nature than something nature actually intended-- unless nature intended for humans to create an immortal being that can break all its rules. To a certain extent, however, the Puppet Master's words ring true, it's the change is often the catalyst for growth.

This one might sound like it came from the Puppet Master except Major Motoko Kusanagi said this herself. She's an individual who apparently has changed too many cybernetic bodies and with too many augmentations that she's become more machine than human.

It's true that she's perfect in every way but the cost of itis her own biological shackle. That's why Major is often at a conundrum-- she might be free to change and have an unlimited growth ceiling but the room for improvement goes only as big as her humanity allows it.

Yet again, we have another quote here of the Puppet Master debating the foundations of humanity. Much like how Morpheus argues to Neo inThe Matrix that human consciousness is nothing more than electrical signals in the brain, biological beings are nothing more than programs.

All of us started off as nothing more than mere DNA smears who are predestined to survive and propagate our race. At least, that's what the essence of biological beings is, according to the Puppet Master. One heck of an oversimplification but the frightening part is that it might be true.

A human is only a sentient because of its consciousness and self-awareness, something that separates it from other animals. Then along came an A.I. invention, the Puppet Master who was able to create its own awareness and consciousness by itself.

It essentially invalidated the status of a human being as the top player in the food chain. The Puppet Master was merely the first of its kind yet it's already more intelligentand more resourceful than most human beings. Human hubris and ego simply cannot take that.

Speaking of hubris, ambition is also one of the things that make humans more peculiar compared to other apes. Because no other ape would dare explore the huge dark death sentence beyond Earth nor would it try to create something smarter than it.

Pushing our limits, whether physical, mental, or social has made modern society possible and thistendency is bound tobecome more exponential in the future. In the film, it's also the reason why the Major is chasing a murderous A.I.

Oh butGhost in the Shellis not just about existentialism, but nihilism as well. Straight out of Batou's mouth is something that minimizes the struggles of each individual person in their effort to gain knowledge during their lives.

Not even the smartest scientist or the richest man can have all the most valuable treasure in the world, knowledge. Unless of course, an immortal sentient being existed that can actually accumulate all knowledge, inGhost in the Shell's case, that would be the Puppet Master. Explains why its the perfect villain for humanity.

That's a quirky contemporary way of saying that a dead organic human body is a sad sight. It's courtesy of Batou again. When one lives in a world where human consciousness can easily be transferred into a new shell or body, an organic human is bound to be a precious commodity.

The Major perfectly explains this notion perfectly well with her ennui. Since her consciousness is easily salvaged, it seems less precious or meaningful than a fragile human being who still depends on a flimsy fatty organ for their being.

That's one cynical way to look at the Major's predicament. She's a cyborg and a perfect one at that, except her idea of herself has gotten hazy and conflicting to the point where she no longer considers or considered herself human.

This is easily shown when she has no qualms on being naked in front of her comrades as it's technically not her original body anymore. Her whole being has gotten reduced to a transferrable consciousness-- one tends to suffer an identity crisis due to this.

Ah, the age-old question, "what is life?" It's a good query to ask a cyborg in hopes of them frying their circuitry, which is probably why the Puppet Master fired this shot. Surprisingly, the question also works well at making organics freeze and scratch their heads.

It's not practically important question nor its answer that groundbreaking to mankind but it grows ever more prevalent as humans stray farther away from their animalistic humble beginnings. Just one of the many questions thatGhost in the Shellassaults its viewers with no answer in sight.
