In Sarah Pinskers debut novel, A Song for a New Day (Head of Zeus, 18.99), liberty and creative endeavour are compromised by political and socioeconomic reality. Pinsker presents a frighteningly real near-future US in which social gatherings have been proscribed due to terrorist attacks and viral plagues. Corporation StageHoloLive transmits virtual music events for the masses, while musician Luce retains some semblance of artistic integrity by playing at illegal underground venues. Meanwhile, Rosemary is a naive recluse, cocooned in virtual reality: when she is offered a job as a talent scout for StageHoloLive, she must leave her comfort zone. Pinsker movingly charts Rosemarys coming of age story as her world and Luces collide.

Adrian Tchaikovsky follows his successful Children of Time duology with the standalone The Doors of Eden (Tor, 18.99). The novel draws the reader into a story that expands and deepens the many-worlds theory: on a series of parallel Earths, life has undergone very different evolutions. There is one world where the dominant species is fish who upload identities into computers, another where dinosaurs rule, and even a reality in which rat-like creatures are dominant. The book begins as an intriguing tale of two young women, lovers Lee and Mal, investigating sightings of the Birdman of Bodmin Moor, but quickly escalates into a dizzyingly inventive techno-thriller which explores issues of evolutionary biology and contemporary politics. Emotionally complex and intellectually satisfying, The Doors of Eden will enhance Tchaikovskys already considerable reputation.

In Micaiah Johnsons entertaining first novel, The Space Between Worlds (Hodder & Stoughton, 14.99), the Eldridge Institute has not only discovered the multiverse, with 380-plus planet Earths alongside Earth Zero, but the means to travel between worlds. Only traversers, individuals whose doppelgangers are dead on another Earth, can make a crossing to collect scientific data for the benefit of the Institute. Enter strong-willed but vulnerable Cara, a young black woman plucked from the hostile wastelands to work for the Institute: her doppelgangers are dead on all but eight parallel Earths, allowing her almost unlimited movement. Having lived a hand-to-mouth existence fighting poverty and abuse, Cara relishes the freedom of interworld travel, but what she discovers on Earth 175 threatens to uncover not only her own terrible secret but that of the enigmatic Institute. Johnson excels at contrasting lives of privilege and poverty, and at drip-feeding information that gradually reveals Caras complex character.

An ambitious wide-screen space opera debut, The Vanished Birds (Titan, 8.99) by Simon Jimenez tells the story of a diverse cast of characters spanning eons and light years in an emotionally gripping narrative redolent of Samuel R Delany and Cordwainer Smith. In an exotic far-future universe teeming with life, great bird-like starships journey between worlds in the employ of the vast, heartless Umbai Company. When the captain of a starship lands on an agricultural world, she is persuaded to give passage to a boy who inexplicably fell from the stars. Young Ahro has a nascent talent that will change everything, the ability to transport himself from world to world by the power of his mind alone; this is a talent that the ruthless Umbai Company wish to exploit. Part thriller, part coming-of-age story, encompassing romance, planetary escapades and poignant meditations on the passage of time, The Vanished Birds is a moving epic that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Billed as a feminist space opera, Seven Devils (Gollancz, 18.99) is the first collaboration between Elizabeth May and Laura Lam. Its the far future, and an evil empire has the galaxy in its grip. Thec crushes dissent, is perennially at war, and forever expanding. Heroine Eris was once heir to the throne, but turned against the brutal regime and now, with a team of four other women, works to bring the empire, led by her villainous brother Prince Damocles, to its knees. With its well drawn cast of LGBTQ characters, Seven Devils is a curious mixture of the old-fashioned novels of rebellion against an evil empire are ten-a-penny and the up-to-the-minute: think Star Wars recast for the modern age. Despite some scientific implausibilities, the novel moves at a cracking pace and, with neat plot twists and cliffhangers, is page-turning fun.

Eric Browns latest novel is The Martian Menace (Titan).

Celebrating the headliners who helped shape Vegas entertainment – Lasvegasmagazine

The Vegas residency is a double-edged sword. It means either one has reached the pinnacle of success, or that one has been demoted to the entertainment worlds version of purgatory. While the latter is hardly true these days, the sentiment persists. One such Justin Timberlake, despite the successful residencies of contemporaries like Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, once scoffed at the idea of headlining in Vegas, claiming that he was not yet ready to plan his retirement. At surface level, Timberlake has a point. Look around and one will see stars of yesteryear plastered on billboards all over town: Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Cher, and the list goes on. Surely, one may think, Vegas is where careers go to die. But not so. Not any longer, at least. And, possibly, not ever.

Vegas is a copycat town. When one star strikes gold, others come rushing to the mine, and some casinos are all too eager to sign their own version of an Elvis Presley or a Celine Dion, hoping to achieve similar results. Indeed, some have done it better than others. But thats not a knock on quality. Even some of the best residencies have failed to catch on with audiences, underscoring the fact that a modestly successful residency is punishingly difficult to produce. Some triumph, others flop, and many would feel lucky to simply keep a steady gig.

Theres no real formula or algorithm that determines how residencies succeed in this town. Some stars coast on name recognition, or they find themselves able to capitalize on nostalgia; some stars learn that audiences are yearning for their long-awaited return to the spotlight, while others just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Yet, one thing all successful, groundbreaking residencies seem to have in common is that theyre different. And while that may sound simple, if it were, a lot more stars would be doing it.

In Las Vegas rich history of entertainment, some headliners have stood above the rest. This is not to say one entertainer is better than another, but that what he or she accomplished helped elevate the idea of what a Vegas residency could be. We at Las Vegas Magazine want to celebrate the entertainers who helped shape our cultural landscape into what we know today, as well as reflect on how it was done. Thus, the following is our list of some of the most influential headliners to grace the Vegas stage.

Some may call Britney Spears residency a byproduct of Celine Dions. Perhaps thats true, but their impact was starkly different. While Dion brought in star power and paved the way for older stars, like Elton John and Rod Stewart, to reinvigorate their careers through a Vegas residency, Spears residency proved there was a healthy market in Vegas for younger acts, which ultimately brought in a younger clientele. The earlier construction of The Cosmopolitan and City Center, along with a few modern casino renovations, hinted that the Strip was trying to adopt a more contemporary aesthetic. Arguably, Spears residency helped Vegas fully realize that venture, and its mostly been successful. If Spears had flopped, Backstreet Boys, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga residencies would have been, at best, unlikely.

While many great comedians have graced the Vegas stage, such as Danny Gans, Don Rickles and Redd Foxx, Carrot Top doesnt get enough props for being the most successful comedian in Vegas history. Hes performed his brand of prop comedy in town since the mid-90s, and hes had a residency at Luxor since 2005. That longevity is rarely attainable for a Vegas headliner, let alone a comedian. How does he do it? He adapts. Though his schtick stays the same, the material constantly changes. He has a few greatest hits that stay in his act, but on the whole, the material is fresh, for hes constantly taking notes on pop culture and incorporating it into his props.

As the saying goes: If you build it, they will come. And thats exactly what happened with Celine Dion and The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Before Dion, Vegas not only needed some star power, the city needed an attraction that could draw crowds from all over the world. Sure, Vegas had Cirque du Soleil and a few Broadway productions at the time, but people could see similar performances elsewhere. For a time, if you wanted to see Celine Dion, you could only see her in Las Vegas. Suffice it to say, her original residency, A New Day, was a massive success. What was supposed to be a three-year residency, turned into two successful residencies over 16 years, and changed the shape of Vegas entertainment to come.

Not only is David Copperfield one of the most influential magicians in Vegas, hes one of the most influential magicians ever. If making the Statue of Liberty disappear and levitating over the Grand Canyon are any indication, Copperfield brought large-scale, illusion-based magic into the mainstream, which clearly inspired fellow magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. But what makes his Vegas show so endearing is his ability to weave stories together through his magic, whether it involves a heartwarming tribute to his father, or an encounter with aliens inside the MGM Grand. And, most of all, even though hes performed magic professionally for more than 45 years, hes still not afraid to challenge himself or take risks, and thats why his Vegas show never gets old.

By the late 1960s, The King had lost his groove. His music wasnt selling, and he spent much of his time making unwatchable movies. At the time, it might have even been accurate to have called Elvis a joke. But, little did people know, he was on the verge of a resurgence. Elvis iconic 68 comeback special on NBC reminded everyone that he was still cool. Soon after, he inked a deal with the International Hotel (now Westgate) and kicked off a legendary residency, one that would not only revitalize his career, but show other singers and stars that Vegas was a place where people could reinvent themselves.

While he wasnt the first drag queen in Las Vegas, it wouldnt be a stretch to say Frank Marino helped popularize the modern drag show on the Strip. As the emcee of An Evening at La Cage and, more recently, Divas Las Vegas, Marino became known for his stellar impersonation of comedian Joan Rivers. Not only did he create a fun, vibrant environment for his audiences, but so did his ragtag team of drag queens. And since the cast all played Vegas-headlining divas like Cher, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears, if you couldnt get a ticket to one of their concerts, you could always find the next best thing at Divas.

Liberace routinely annoyed stodgy music critics with his grandiose piano playing and showmanship. But its that flashy, excessive persona that made him so endearing, as well as excessively rich. Regarding the criticism, hed often quip that he cried all the way to the bank. (By the late-70s, he was reportedly making up to $300,000 per week at the Hilton.) His over-the-top antics, such as riding across the stage in a Rolls-Royce and wearing exotic (some may say ridiculous) costumes, essentially defined what the Vegas residency would become: an in-your-face spectacular. But, more importantly, he had an innate ability to connect with audiences, not only making them think they were seeing a show, but rather the performance of an old friend.

What Penn & Teller do so well is demystify magic. Yet, somehow they still find a way to make magic mystifying. To them, magic is not an illusion, its a trick. They dont want audiences to think for a moment that magic is real, because everyone knows that its not. Rather, they want their magic tricks to be good enough that even when audiences know theyre not real, the tricks are still interesting. That may seem subtle, but it makes a difference, because some modern magicians all too often make a mockery out of magic. Newcomers to the Strip, such as Piff the Magic Dragon and Mat Franco, seem to follow the Gospel of Penn & Teller, for they similarly strive to make magic fun and meaningful, rather than something one has to believe in to enjoy.

If one were to describe the founding fathers of Vegas entertainment, the list would likely include Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishopthats the Rat Pack that ruled Vegas in the 60s. All were individually successful in Vegas, and while it would be good-natured to say they all have their place in Vegas history, its Frank, Sammy and Dean that everybody remembers. With that said, the Rat Pack personified Vegas. They were the total embodiment of the boozy, schmoozey, smokey, classic Vegas that many long and lust for. Its an attitude that helped build this town, which makes their influence almost inescapable. And who would want it any other way?

Santana is known for being the first true rock band to have a Vegas residency, and the group has been in Vegas for more than a decade. Since then, weve seen other rock acts find their place in Vegas, such as Aerosmith, Billy Idol and David Lee Roth. But more than simply ushering in a new wave of Vegas entertainment, Santana has mastered the art of intimacy. They perform in one of the smaller venues in town, House of Blues, making the band feel more up close and personal than if they were playing at, say, The Colosseum. It allows for a reciprocal relationship between artist and audience, making each individual performance unique to each audience.

In his book God, No!, Penn Jillette made one of the most astute assessments on the impact of Siegfried & Roy: When you take something easy and safe and make it look difficult and death-defying, you are a cheesy circus act. When you take something impossible and make it look easy, youre an artist What they do looks easy and simple and, well, it just happens to be close to impossible and stirs your heart to the very depths. Siegfried & Roy elevated the typical Vegas magic show, so much so that the typical Vegas magic show became a copycat of Siegfried & Roy, replete with gaudy showmanship, tigers and dancing girls. But no one did it better than them, and no one ever will.

Everybody knows Wayne Newton is the unofficial ambassador of Las Vegas. His name is synonymous with this town. But how did he achieve such wild success? He had a few hits, a boyish smile and a distinctive high voice. Other than that, there doesnt seem to be any concrete reasons one can pinpoint that would account for such triumph. Yet, like other successful Vegas headliners, he was a highly charismatic entertainer who displayed top-notch showmanship. At age 16, he started playing in town with his brother Jerry. Six shows a day for 51 weeks. While kids his age were busy being teenagers, he cut his teeth in showbiz at Vegas clubs, eventually learning how to masterfully work a crowd. Unlike Liberace, he was successful without gimmicks, and unlike Elvis, he was successful without colossal fame. What he achieved in this town was unprecedented, and Vegas likely wont see anyone like him ever again.

Las Vegas man was picture of health before he died from COVID-19 – Las Vegas Review-Journal

An avid flamenco dancer, Artor Nazzari was the picture of health before he fell fatally ill to COVID-19.

The 42-year-old father of three didnt smoke or drink and exercised daily, said his wife, Carissa Hernandez, who works as an emergency room nurse at the VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas and had taken care of coronavirus patients since the initial outbreak in March.

He was in the studio practicing every day, she said. It was unbelievable, his lungs were in great shape. Even to this day when I think about it, it doesnt make any sense to me.

Nazzari was happiest on stage, Hernandez said. The couple met at a flamenco dance competition and later started a flamenco dance company called Fuerza Flamenca in Las Vegas.

In public he was more reserved and more private. But when he got on stage, thats where he let out his heart and soul, she said. He loved it more than anything in the world.

Nazzari was laid off from his job as an aircraft inspector at Gulfstream before he fell ill.

Started with ear infection

Nazzaris health started to decline in May with an ear infection. The couple tried to remedy the infection at home, but his condition got worse and antibiotics werent working, Hernandez said.

He went to the emergency room at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and underwent surgery. Then four or five days after he was discharged, Nazzari developed a fever.

Related: Heres how to help us tell more stories about the states COVID victims

I just assumed he just had a bad reaction to the ear, Hernandez said. At the hospital, they found Nazzari had bilateral pneumonia. I thought, geez where did this come from?

From then on, Hernandez and the family hunkered down.

Hernandez and her 4-year-old daughter, Arabella Nazzari, contracted the virus from Nazzari, though both had mild symptoms. Daughters Alicia Nazzari, 10, and Adrianna Nazzari, 8, did not get sick. Hernandez worked to take care of her sick family members while also making sure her other children stayed away from those infected.

After about 14 days, things were looking better.

He started to improve. His appetite came back. He felt he was turning a corner and getting better, Hernandez said. He was finally on the road to recovery.

At the beginning of July, the entire family tested negative for the virus.

Then a week later, Nazzari started feeling ill again. His ankles and feet were swollen, and it looked like he was bleeding under his skin.

They did another COVID test and he tested positive. From there, everything went downhill really fast, and the ER nurse suddenly found herself on the other side of her occupation.

Even with all my medical knowledge, all my training, I was completely helpless to help my husband, Hernandez said. I felt like I had the weight of the world come crashing.

Narazzi went to MountainView Hospital and died there July 19.

Praise for health care workers

After Nazzaris death, Hernandez said she was surprised to receive a phone call from the doctor who tried to treat him. He told her how much the case touched his heart.

He said they were trying to figure out why a healthy 42-year-old man died from the virus, not only so I could have answers, but to also make sure this doesnt happen to anyone else, she said. It really evidenced how much they truly cared.

Doctors told her the virus can attack various organs and probably severely injured Nazzaris liver, even though it was in perfect condition before his illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, severe cases of the coronavirus can lead to liver damage.

Some patients hospitalized for the virus have had increased levels of liver enzymes that indicate their livers are at least temporarily damaged. However, more research needs to be done on the topic, according to the website.

From the follow-up by Nazzaris doctor to the nurses who helped her FaceTime with her husband before he died, Hernandez said she couldnt thank the health care workers enough.

Hernandez said the nurses called her and asked if she would like to watch Nazzaris final moments, which she said was important to her. He went into cardiac arrest while intubated.

Even though it was traumatic, I promised my husband Id be there in the end, she said. I promised him I wouldnt leave him.

In their last conversation, Nazzari told Hernandez how much he loved her and their children.

Nothing would separate our love even in death, she said. Just to feel his love and know that even death wouldnt separate us that was one of the greatest gifts he ever gave to me.

Las Vegas, Clark County to face COVID-19 task force benchmark check on Thursday – KTNV Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Just a week and a half after the governor announced Nevada would move away from the phased reopening approach, the state's COVID-19 task force will meet with county leaders to discuss critical benchmarks for containment efforts of the coronavirus.

Gov. Steve Sisolak says the statewide containment efforts were shifting to a more local focus including critical benchmarks each county would be responsible for meeting.

"Just as before, this plan, or any other, will not work if we don't have full participation from all Nevadans, every county, municipality, employee, neighbor, and family," said Gov. Sisolak during an Aug. 3 news conference.

Nevada counties must meet the benchmarks which include a new formula to 'normalize' and stabilize data which includes: testing, case rates, and positivity rates.

In addition, state authorities will look at:

State authorities say they will call counties each Thursday morning and if a county fails to meet multiple benchmarks, the county would be placed into an assessment.

"Counties will be asked to create an action plan, which may include implementing certain mitigation levels beyond the statewide baseline, including potentially moving to 25 percent capacity in high-risk settings or reducing public gatherings to slow the spread," said Caleb Cage, the COVID-19 state task force director during an Aug. 3 news conference.

Clark County is already in the assessment phase of the plan and county leadership is finalizing an action plan.

"I would point back to the additional testing we are doing, the proactive work that we are doing, so I feel we are making all the right and necessary steps to get us off of the red zone," said Clark County Chairman Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick says the overall trend is looking better for Clark County and does not anticipate additional closures at the present time.

Kirkpatrick says it will take the county at least 30 days to meet the necessary benchmarks and exit the White House designated 'red zone'

The governor says some of the targeted measures to get counties inline with the state benchmarks include:

Report: Apartment rent slowly rising in Las Vegas; vacancies expected to increase in coming months – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Apartment rent in Las Vegas is slowly rising after a low earlier this year, according to a report from the Nevada State Apartment Association (NVSAA).

The report notes while rent in Southern Nevada steadily increased from 2015-2019, the current increase is moving at a sluggish pace.

Regardless of the slowdown, the $1,100 average rent during the second quarter of 2020 is still slightly higher than a year ago, when it was $1,080. It notes this number is also 5% higher than the pre-recession peak.

The average vacancy rate is close to 7% and up 0.4% from last year. The association says this is still down from almost 11% at the height of the Great Recession.

NVSAA expects the vacancy numbers to change later this year as the eviction moratorium expires next month. They also anticipate a slowdown in rent growth and apartment construction during that timeframe.

Fortunately, about 90% of Nevada renters have been able to make their monthly rent payments during this crisis, said Susy Vasquez, NVSAA executive director, in a news release. But with the enhanced unemployment benefits at a standstill and the pending expiration of the eviction moratorium, we expect these numbers will change during the third and fourth quarters of this year, even with apartment owners and operators doing a good job of working with their residents.

Apartment development is booming thanks to two factors: rising rent and declining vacancies. The association says since 2015, more than 13,500 units have been built in Southern Nevada, and thousands more are expected over the next years.

As of the second quarter of 2020, NVSAA says 3,117 units are under construction in the Valley, with 45% in the Enterprise, Henderson, Spring Valley and Summerlin areas.

Vasquez noted the increase in units will drive up the vacancy rate.

SpaceX Increases Latest Funding Round to $2 Billion – Bloomberg

Elon Musk

Photographer: Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg

Photographer: Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg

Elon Musks Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is close to finalizing $2 billion in new funding after the company increased the size of the round due to strong demand, according to people familiar with the matter.

Fidelity Investments, an existing investor, is one of the biggest participants in the round, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.

A representative for Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX didnt immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for Fidelity declined to comment.

The company had been in discussions to raise about $1 billion at a price of $270 a share, Bloomberg News previously reported. Not including the new funds, that wouldve valued SpaceX at $44 billion.

Hyperdrive

When the transaction is finalized, the company will have an equity value of $46 billion, including the fresh $2 billion in capital. This ranks SpaceX as one of the most valuable U.S. venture-backed companies.

The $2 billion round, which was oversubscribed, would be the largest fundraising so far for SpaceX, according to PitchBook. It also comes just as SpaceX pulled off its most highest-profile mission.

SpaceXs Dragon capsule returned to earth safely this month, the first mission in which U.S. astronauts flew to the International Space Station on American spacecraft since the shuttle program ended in 2011.

For SpaceX, the flight was a signature achievement 18 years after Musk founded the company with the ultimate goal of populating other planets. The mission also cements SpaceXs spot as the most valuable firm in the New Space industry.

SpaceXs previous investors include Peter Thiels Founders Fund, Alphabet Inc., Baillie Gifford and Valor Equity Partners.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been a key partner and customer for SpaceX. It said on Friday that it was targeting Oct. 23 for its first operational mission with SpaceX.

SpaceX ramping up Starship prototype tests in Texas (and looking for a resort manager) – Space.com

We can expect a lot more Starship action out of SpaceX in the near future.

Last week, Elon Musk's company flew a full-size prototype of its Mars-colonizing Starship spacecraft for the first time ever, sending a vehicle called the SN5 ("Serial No. 5") about 500 feet (150 meters) into the sky above the South Texas village of Boca Chica.

More such uncrewed test hops are coming from the company, and not just from the SN5. Indeed, the SN6 prototype is already at the launch pad at SpaceX's facilities near Boca Chica, and it may be the next Starship vehicle to get off the ground.

Video: Watch SpaceX's Starship SN5 prototype's 1st flightRelated: SpaceX's Starship and Super Heavy Mars rocket in pictures

"Not sure yet, but hopefully. Will need leg & other repairs. Probably SN6 flies before SN5. We need to make flights simple & easy many per day," Musk said via Twitter on Saturday (Aug. 8), responding to a follower who asked if SN5 will fly again.

SN5 and SN6 both have a single Raptor engine and will likely fly only on short test hops, similar to the one SN5 performed last week.

The SN7 was a test tank that SpaceX burst on purpose in a pressure test this past June. But the SN8 will be another flying prototype one with body flaps and a nosecone, Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday.

That suggests the SN8 will fly relatively high likely to a target altitude of about 12 miles (20 kilometers), if Musk's previous statements about the Starship test campaign are any guide. The SN8 will therefore likely sport three Raptors, SpaceX's powerful next-generation engine. (SpaceX's currently operational rockets, the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, are powered by Merlin engines.)

The final version of the 100-passenger, 165-foot-tall (50 m) Starship will feature six Raptors and be powerful enough to blast itself off the moon and Mars, Musk has said. But it will need help to get off Earth. Starship will launch from our planet atop a giant first-stage booster known as Super Heavy, which will have 31 Raptors of its own.

Starship and Super Heavy will both be fully and rapidly reusable. The duo will therefore be relatively cheap to fly, Musk has said cheap enough to make crewed Mars missions and a variety of other exploration feats economically feasible, if all goes according to plan.

SpaceX is already starting to flesh out ancillary aspects of this bold vision. For example, the company recently put out a hiring call for offshore operations engineers to help develop floating spaceports for Starship vehicles.

The company is also looking to hire a resort development manager, who will be in charge of transforming Boca Chica Village into a suitable jumping-off point for Starship passengers.

"Boca Chica Village is our latest launch site dedicated to Starship, our next-generation launch vehicle. SpaceX is committed to developing this town into a 21st-century spaceport," a new SpaceX job notice reads. "We are looking for a talented Resort Development Manager to oversee the development of SpaceX's first resort from inception to completion."

That resort will likely be lavish, given that Starship trips will be quite expensive. (Musk has said that the cost of a seat aboard a Mars-bound Starship could eventually drop below $100,000.) Indeed, one of the preferred qualifications for the posted job is "experience working for high-end brand luxury development."

"Aiming to make it super fun!" Musk said in another Tuesday tweet, referring to the resort.

Though Starship is still in the early testing stages, SpaceX already has a mission on the books for the vehicle: Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa booked Starship for a round-the-moon trip, with a target launch date of 2023.

[8/11/2020] Virgin Galactic Q2 Earnings & Other Updates

Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group Ltd., waves after ringing the opening bell during Virgin ... [+] Galactic Holdings Inc.'s initial public offering (IPO) on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019. Photographer: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg

Virgin Galactic (NYSE:SPCE), an aerospace company focused on suborbital spaceflight for space tourists, published Q2 earnings last week. While the companys financials are not very relevant yet, given that it has yet to begin commercial operations, there have been a couple of noteworthy developments in recent weeks.

Space Tourism Updates

The company indicated that it could begin commercial service of its spaceflight by early 2021, flying its founder Richard Branson. While this is behind the companys previous 2020 timeline, the delay was largely expected due to the Covid-19 related disruption. The company continues to test its space flights and noted that it had now cleared 27 out of 29 Federal Aviation Administration milestones. The FAA clearance is key to receiving final approval to begin flights with commercial customers.

New Projects

The company also provided updates on some new projects. The company is working with Rolls-Royce to develop a supersonic aircraft that would be able to carry between 9 to 19 passengers, capable of traveling at about 3x the speed of sound. Separately, the company is also looking to expand its services to start flying customers to orbital destinations such as the International Space Station. The orbital flight is typically much more expensive and currently costs about roughly $50 million today (versus suborbital flights that are priced at $250k per ticket) [1]

Recent Fundraising

On Monday, the company raised about $460 million by selling 23.6 million equity shares in a secondary offering priced at $19.50 per share. The should considerably boost Virgins cash balance, which stood at about $360 million at the end of Q2 2020.

[7/16/2020] Valuing Virgin Galactic Stock

Virgin Galactic is an aerospace company focused on suborbital spaceflight for private individuals and researchers. The company hasnt been able to generate much buzz, unlike the Elon Musk-backed SpaceX, considering that it is still in the test phases and doesnt generate meaningful revenues as of yet. That said, things are likely to change in the next few quarters, as it likely begins commercial space flights carrying paying space tourists from 2021, charging each passenger about $250,000. The stock currently trades at about $19 per share, translating into a market cap of under $4 billion. So what exactly are the factors driving Virgin Galactics Revenues And Valuation?

What summer jams are Citians rocking amid the world burning down? – Kansas City Pitch

Rocking vinyl in the front yard. // Photo by Travis Young.

Summer jams are one hell of a way to lock a moment in amber. I cant hear Los Lobos version of La Bamba without smelling sunscreen, chlorine, and the hint of a nearby snack bars hamburgers or hearing my aunt tell my brother and I to stop running next to the pool at the old Piper Lake Club. Alan Jacksons Chatahootchee will always slam-bang into Achy Breaky Heart, and hearing those two songs insantly transports me to the drive home from camp while my mom and grandma laughed and told stories in the front seat of our van while Alan and Billy Ray played on repeat.

So many songs evoke sweaty memories of the past, while also letting us make new ones in the present. We contacted a slew of people we feel are interesting voices in the Kansas City and Lawrence communities to talk about a song which they felt encapsulates the summereither as a season, or one which seems particularly significant to this point in time.

During the pandemic, music has been my constant companionmore so than usual because I have been working from home and am not experiencing my typical interactions with co-workers, faculty, students, and co-workers. I lately have been gravitating toward fixtures from my salad days, such as the Big Band era, Linda Ronstadt, Buffy St. Marie, and War. But its Pink Floyd that has been on replay. During the early days of the pandemic, I had separate dreams where Roger Waters and David Gilmour each visited with messages of support, so this prompted me to revisit Floyds catalog. Ive connected to Fearless this summer, as it is such a song of comfort. The music and vocals are tranquil, while the lyrics tell of a protagonist who stands by their convictions against ignorance. It ends on a hopeful note of personal empowerment. This particular theme repeatedly and assertively appears in Floyds later work, but this early recording captures a tone of tentative confidence that matches my current mode regarding getting through this pandemic.

I had the honor to be asked to tour manage for the Appleseed Cast / Hospital Ships tour by Chris Crisci and Jordan Gieger in late summer of 2011. It was by far the most fun Ive had both as a fan and as a friend of all the members of both bands. Middle States was unanimously the highlight of every night no matter what song even the die hard fans thought theyd rather hear. In addition to what arguably was the tightest lineup of both bands, Appleseed also had Ted Stevens of Cursive on this tour in place of Aaron Pilar who had just left the band to pursue owning and operating his own restaurant (Culinaria which is amazing). Minds were blown. Ted even shoved a guitar in my hands to jam with Appleseed near the end of a show in St. Louis. I could have died then. Anyway, I got to visit a lot of places Id never been before and got to experience it with my friends playing amazing music for two and a half weeks. Every time I hear this song now, Im back in the small car Jordan drove or the van Appleseed borrowed from Capybara for this tour, soaking in the sites and the music. Ill never forget it.

The sound of summers end resounds in Summer Skin. Punctuated by a marching rhythm on snare, a hollowed-out feeling grabs you from the first note of bass. The lyrics transport us instantly to the halcyon days of youth. We would play under the sun until we were dehydrated and sick. We felt our stomachs churn as we realized that the summer wasnt the only fading thing. Our youth was gently disappearing; the pain of that transition only to reappear in middle age. The story unfolds: Im fifteen. Im living out my big summer crush. We kiss under the stars. Im three hundred miles away from home. We hold each other close. Were unsure what to do, so we kiss all night. I worry that Ill lose the memory, but Ive been given a ticket to my last days of innocence: An unassuming song that hides a cyclone of emotions.

Now that Ive lost everything to you

In my Los Angeles, the car was king. For no real reason, we would hop in the car and drive. As the summer wound down, trips to nowhere continued. Most of the rides were in a champagne Cadillac Sedan Deville. That monster rhythmically glided over the paved roads, every bump, pothole, cushioned. Tonight, toward sunset, we would hit the freeway and head to the beach, stopping at McDonalds along the way. This ride was not the first time I had heard Cat Stevenss Wild World, but it seemed like the first time the hooks and lyrics penetrated my heart. The gentle, soothing, yet dire warnings of the bad things out there from Stevens, combined with the narcotic of fast food and the magic carpet ride, I could not help but fall asleep in the back seat, and those in the front were free to do exactly what they wanted. I couldnt tattle on what I didnt see or hear.

Sounds Like Fun is just a little over two minutes long, but it immediately changes how I feel about my life in the middle of this landlocked, isolating, depressing COVID-19 pandemic. When I learned this band was from Raytown, Missouri and formed in 2019 by three young friends, Tyfaizon, TheBabeGabe, and Deiondre, I was floored. They are young, but they have such a great, layered sound that moves the listener to many places. It is pure goodness. I just want to jump off the high diving board at the pool when I hear their music, but alas, the pool is closed. The band members all went to the same high school and have been friends for several years. They have released multiple albums on their own label, Bedroom Records.

Sounds Like Fun is the opening track of an 11-song album that is beautiful and musical and honest, and from the next generation of musical artists. The band members are sharing stories about their lives with bold primary colors of sound, and theyre not taking themselves too seriously. The band has said that they are writing music that is the soundtrack of their lives. With Surf as an album title, and metaphor, I want to escape to their world for the summer. Give me the waves, wash me away!

This song, like anything frontwoman Syd conjures up, is funky and relevant on levels. Immediately, this song feels like a cool, jazzy breeze on a summer night, wind through a hammock, that sort of thing. Reading really deeply into it, Ive repurposed the affirmation They gon get us to come together, to mean it is dire and imperative that we work in a coordinated way to solve some many deeply connected social issues, the way the affirmation is repeated feels like a building of urgency, each phrase before crushed by the renewed meaning and added weight of the following. What we gon do? What we gon do? melodic vocals ask from the foreground, while jazz flute accentuates the short and simple questions and affirmations. This song feels like its telling me to prioritize self-care so I can better build up the communities I am part of, which wouldnt be all that bad of a message to spread around right now. Dont forget if youre gon come together, wear a mask!

The track gives me an electric feeling like taking in a summer skyline at dusk overlooking Clinton lake while Im whipping my ride and pumping it up to 11 one more! The sultry vocals by Gambino just take you to another place, maybe enough to make you set aside the craziness of the state of the world currently. The singles whole vibe is cool and sexy, and I cant listen to it enough right now. I can mix in and out of this one and never disappoint the crowd or more importantly, myself. Definitely a scorching summer sizzler! The proof is in the pudding. On a side note, this one is listed as a single, Im sure its on an album but in this ADD generation the kids are on singles and we disc jocks have always strived to get the 12 single

River of Orchids is my summer song of 2020, because it reminds me to drop the technology, slow down, and live presently in the world. Its the first track on an album that I have fond memories of listening to incessantly the summer of 1999. This year, I have often thought of and listened to this song again because of the circumstances that the Corona pandemic has put me in. Other than running back and forth to work, day care, and home with little time to do much rather than eat, sleep, work, and clean, this summer has forced to me slow down.

I have spent many many days recently just staying home and taking care of my four year old daughter. Laurel and I developed over time a favorite activity of going for miles-long walks together. Our objective was always to find treasure. Treasure could be anything, really: the pattern on a leaf, a special rock, an interesting cloud, a dropped object, a unique wildflower, or a stick that is also a magic wand all qualified. I now treasure the experience of slowing down and discovering the world around me through the eyes of my best friend and daughter, Laurel Rose.

Im a huge Janelle Monae fan (I have Cold War lyrics tattooed all over me) and Hell You Talmbout encapsulates the summer for me. This is what we need to be talking about. Its time for radical change. The systems in place have failed all but the most wealthy among us. Theres no more room (there never was) to be complicit in the murder of black civilians at the hands of the police. We need to remove outdated systems that are holding our country back and move forward into a better system that works for all of us. This is the summer. Say their names.

Nonprofit Center for Financial Empowerment Launches Free Virtual Information Series ‘Getting Through Life’s Firsts’ for Teens and Young Adults -…

The Center for Financial Empowerment (CFE), the nonprofit founded by SCE Credit Union, is launching a free virtual informational series for teens and young adults that will guide and help participants navigate through many of lifes firsts. The kickoff live stream event will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18 and will de-mystify the process of applying for college to help both students and parents feel more confident.

The process of applying for college can be daunting with multiple lists of requirements, things to consider, procedures and deadlines. While this is challenging for any adult to manage, it can be absolutely overwhelming to a 17-18-year-old trying to navigate the complexities. CFE has teamed up with several community organizations to form a panel of guests, ranging from college admissions to financial aid experts, to explain the college-bound process and answer any questions.

Panelists include: Eboni Hodge, M.Ed. of Higher Learning, LLC; Rhea Watson, Ph.D of Scholarship Solutions; Diane Angulo of Fulfillment Fund; Charles Mason from Loyola Marymount University; and Maria Alvarez of UNITE L.A.

Teens today understand they need higher education for the next step in their lives, but the process of getting there can be complicated and at times overwhelming, said Abby Ulm, director for the Center for Financial Empowerment. As a community resource, our goal with these virtual series is to provide insider tips, positive solutions and tools for young adults to walk away feeling more confident about their life journey ahead. The series will include a vast array of topics important to inform and steer young adults into a positive direction.

For Gender Equality in Ancestral Property, the Journey from 1956 Has Been a Long One – The Wire

This week, the Supreme Court declared that a daughters right in coparcenary property the ancestral property of a Hindu undivided family is equal to a sons, and that these rights can be claimed by the daughter even if her father had died before September 9, 2005, which is the datean amendment to the Hindu Succession Actcame into effect granting daughters an equal share.

Sisters who have been deprived of an equal share of their deceased fathers ancestral property will now have the right to claim their due. Since a coparcenary only ascertains who its members are and does not fix the shares, a preliminary decree can be altered to now ensure equal shares for all daughters.

The matter started with a married daughter, Vineeta Sharma, asking for her share as a coparcener before the Delhi high court. Since there were conflicting views in the Supreme Court in Phulwati and Mangammal, the court said the daughter could claim her share only if her father was alive on September 9, 2005, while in Danamma, the court said the fact of her birth was enough to vest her with rights regardless of whether her father was alive or not the matter was referred to a larger bench that is the author ofthe latest judgment.

If you look at the history of the reforms of Hindu law, this is not an intrepid or path-breaking decision but a logical extension of the changes that have come so far.

In his Essays in Classical and Modern Hindu Law, Duncan Derrett commends that the best studies of property as a concept are by ancient Indians, and that they are largely unknown because they are in manuscripts. A text that he chooses from says that property is not an objective entity sui generis. It is a settled impression dependent upon consciousness of acquisition, or rather of having acquired, which in turn implies understanding of the permitted methods of acquisition.

If we are firmly impressed that women have no right to property, the personal laws of property will naturally be what they are until they are brought in line with the constitution. Coparcenary property is a concept that is essentially patriarchal in nature and the Hindu Succession Act has taken its time to do away with it. The process began in 1956 but has reached a logical conclusion only now

The Hindu Succession Act, 1956, was the most crucial of reforms since it had to do with property, which a key to gender equality and empowerment. The original draft of this Act attempted to scrap the concept of coparcenary property. This was vehemently resisted. During the discussions in parliament, Sita Ram Jajjoo of Madhya Bharat said, Here we feel the pinch because it touches our pockets. We, male members of this house are in a huge majority. I do not wish that the tyranny of the majority may be imposed on the minority, the female members of this House. But no one agreed with him.

According to Nehru, the passage of legislation relating to Hindus is not in any way revolutionary in the changes they bring about and yet there is something revolutionary about them. They have opened a barrier and cleared the way somewhat for our women folk to progress.

Somewhat is a very suitable term, for under the 1956 Act there was no equality with regard to coparcenary property or agricultural holdings. Courts were willing to extend the rules applicable to coparcenary property, which is essentially a male domain, to properties of female members of the devadasi community, essentially a female domain (Chalakonda Alasani v.Chalakonda Ramachalam 1867(2) Mad.H.C.R.P.56). But the sharing of property about which one had the settled impression that it could be enjoyed only by male members, has happened slowly.

In the present case, it was argued that the 2005 amendment recognising women as coparceners can only be prospective that unless the father was alive on the date of the enforcement of the amendment Act, there could be no recognition of the daughters right; that the amendment was not intended to unsettle matters; that if a preliminary decree was passed, all that was left to be done was to demarcate shares by metes and bounds and hence it cannot be altered. The crux of these arguments was that the amendment operated prospectively and not retrospectively.

However, the Supreme Court has now held that the amendment has a retroactive effect. It explained:

The prospective statute operates from the date of its enactment conferring new rights. The retrospective statute operates backward and takes away or impairs vested rights acquired under existing laws. A retroactive statute is one that does not operate retrospectively. It operates in futuro. However, its operation is based upon the character or status that arose earlier.

Until the 2005 amendment, only the male members of a Hindu family had coparcenary rights. And coparcenary property is a right that comes with birth. Now, female members have the same right. It is quite simple. It is a right recognised from the time the daughter is born just as if she were a son. This status therefore operates from the time she is born. Coparcener right is by birth. Thus, it is not at all necessary that the father of the daughter should be living as on the date of the amendment, as she has not been conferred the rights of a coparcener by obstructed heritage.

The Supreme Court said the injustice of inequality has now been done away with by amending the provisions [of the Hindu Succession Act] in consonance with the spirit of the constitution. Any transaction that is genuine and has become final is saved and is not vulnerable to attack and cannot be re-opened. But sham transactions which are bound to be trotted up shall not stop the coparcener daughter from getting her share.

In 2019, I revisited the four-decade-old case of Tulsamma v. Sesha Reddi for the journal, Seminar. The case had to do with the limited womens right to property blossoming into a full one as per S. 14(1) of the Hindu Succession Act. I called it a beacon light, for it understood that the dark corners in the space of womens property rights had to be illumined by law. The judgment was given in 1977, and even in 1991 there were attempts to reopen it, but the Supreme Court refused to take the retrograde step to reopen Tulsammas ratio. It is not easy to let go of property rights, nor to recognise rights not recognised hitherto.

The change has taken many decades from 1956 to now. I am glad Vineeta Sharma asserted her right.

ITC and Twill byMearsk offer specialized coaching to help women entrepreneurs in Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico and India scale up – Marketscreener.com

A new one-on-one coaching programme for women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico and India looking to enter international trade has been launched by ITC's SheTrades initiative and Twill by Maersk.

While more than 95% of all companies are SMEs, only one-in-five exporting businesses are owned by women, and they are more likely to face obstacles to trade according to ITC research.

ITC and Twill by Maersk, a freight logistics service, have joined forces to offer highly specialized coaching to help women entrepreneurs overcome these obstacles.

During a four-week pilot phase in April 2020, four Twill employees based in the Netherlands were paired with four women-owned businesses from Nigeria and Kenya.

The programme is now open to women entrepreneurs in Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico and India. They are encouraged to apply through this form by 19 August 2020.

Before participating in the coaching sessions, Caroline Chepkemboi Tormoi, owner of Eldo Tea Enterprises Ltd., Kenya, found it challenging to establish favourable rates for her customers.

Twill coach Matt Gielkens helped Caroline use Twill's platform to find favourable rates for her customers transparently and cost-effectively.

'Having a logistics partner with an international presence gives us a credible image and more trust by our customers,' Caroline said.In the future, those who have been coached will be able to become coaches themselves to share new knowledge and good practices that will help empower other women entrepreneurs in their communities.

With female empowerment at the core of her social enterprise, Hyelni Hassan, owner of Enterprises Limited, Nigeria, not only wished to boost her sales but also her vision and impact.

Sheelda's Steak Seasoning/Yajin Kulikuli (Suya Spice) is made by rural women, helping to support local communities and empower women to become drivers of socio-economic change and agents of resilience.

Hyelni and her Twill coach, Daisy Zhang, broke down ways of using different sales channels to enter the international market successfully. Hyelni will now re-brand, re-vamp and renew her business to adapt it to the global market and the 'new normal' in the international economy following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hyelni said she had gained confidence and clarity in the possibility of making more sales, which would lead to more women becoming empowered through the Sheelda initiative.

'I am now 100% convinced that with the right mentorship, Sheelda can do more and be more,' she said.

Communications was a key focus area for Adetoun Ajeigbe, owner of Joel Lani, Nigeria. Her company manufactures handmade leather fashion accessories.

Adetoun's coaching sessions meant a return to the drawing board to map out the specific brand values of Joel Lani, and in turn, a company strategy.

From speeding up the company website to harnessing social media channels, Adetoun and her Twill Coach, Menno Veen, identified the importance of maintaining effective communications with customers during the COVID-19 pandemic and adapting the business to a post-COVID world.

Like many business owners at this time, Adetoun has strived to seek new opportunities during the pandemic by shifting her focus to e-commerce. She believes this new strategy will make Joel Lani more internationally competitive.

'I have learned that you can never stop learning. I can keep pushing myself to get better results for my company and also for my personal growth and improvement,' she said.

As a driven and independent woman entrepreneur, Aisha Achonu, owner of Aisha Abu Bakr, Nigeria, had previously found it challenging to spend time expanding her team and delegating tasks to other people. Addressing this formed much of the work she undertook with her Twill Coach, Esteve Hartensveld.

Aisha has now successfully hired a remote team with the right expertise. Like for many, the COVID-19 pandemic has also shown Aisha that several tasks previously done on the ground can be done perfectly well remotely, and are less costly to her business.

SheTrades aims to connect three million women to market by 2021, while integrated logistics giant Maersk has a mission to connect 100,000 SMEs, including women-operated business, to international trade by 2025.
