Coast Guard and Partners Seize Cocaine and Apprehend Suspected Smugglers in Caribbean Sea – HSToday

The U.S. Coast Guard, Navy and law enforcement partners seized 225 kilograms of cocaine and apprehended three suspected smugglers following the interdiction of a drug smuggling go-fast in the Caribbean Sea, on August 24.

Two suspected smugglers are Dominican Republic nationals and one is Colombian, while the seized cocaine has a wholesale value of approximately $6 million.

The interdiction is the result of an international, multi-agency law enforcement effort in support of Operation Unified Resolve, Operation Caribbean Guard, Campaign Martillo (a joint, interagency, 20-nation collaborative counter narcotic effort), and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force (CCSF), and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Puerto Rico.

During a routine patrol in support of Joint Interagency Task Force Souths mission to detect attempts to transport contraband into the U.S. and partner nations, the USS Kidds (DDG 100) helicopter crew sighted a suspicious go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea. The USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer operating with U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 401 onboard, coordinated with the Coast Guard Seventh District to interdict the suspect vessel.

The helicopter crew observed the suspected smugglers jettison multiple bales into the water as the go-fast continued to evade capture. The USS Kidd successfully interdicted and boarded the go-fast with the assistance of the CG LEDET 401. The USS Kidds crew and CG LEDET 401 apprehended the suspected smugglers and recovered eight jettisoned bales from the water. The seized contraband tested positive for cocaine.

The Coast Guard Cutter Resolute (WMEC-620) embarked and transported the suspected smugglers and seized contraband to San Juan, Puerto Rico Saturday, where awaiting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)-HSI, and DEA special agents received custody.

These cases are part of the CCSF, a multiagency OCDETF strike force comprised of federal and state law enforcement including the DEA, DHS, ICE, FBI, USCG, U.S. Marshals Service, Internal Revenue Service and the Puerto Rico Department of Public Safety.

The Coast Guards efforts under Operation Unified Resolve contribute to the interagency results achieved locally under Operation Caribbean Guard. Operation Caribbean Guard coordinates daily efforts between the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Commonwealth and Territorial law enforcement partners, who are working diligently to deter, detect and disrupt illicit maritime trafficking to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Pirates of the Caribbean: What The "Mark" Was That Jack Left On Beckett – Screen Rant

Jack Sparrow contrives much of his reputation in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but he and Cutler Beckett actually share a significant history.

InPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Cutler Beckett remarks that he and Jack Sparrow have both left their mark on one another, but a full explanation for what that means is only found in material outside of the films. ThePirates of the Caribbean series followsCaptain Jack Sparrow anda rotating motley crewof adventurers as they facethreats both historical and supernatural. By virtue of its setting and time period, and as a form of contrast to its lawless leads, the franchise features many characters with some level of connectionto the British aristocracy.

Beckett is introduced inDead Man's Chest as a Director for the East India Trading Company who, in his vengeful quest to eradicate piracy, seeks out the power of the titular Dead Man's Chest. He had made opportunistic use of supernatural forces before, in material outside of the films, namely when forming a brief alliance of convenience with the undead pirate captain Jolly Roger. Beckett in a sense replaces the disgraced Norrington as the primary governmentalvillain, and in that capacity serves as a counterpart to Davy Jones, who succeeds Barbossa as the primary pirate villain.

Related: Pirates of the Caribbean: All 5 Ships Captained By Jack Sparrow

When describing his old adversary inDead Man's Chest, Beckettsays of Jack that "we've each left our mark on the other." In the case of Jack, this is a very literal reference to the "P" brand that Beckett had seared onto his skin to mark him as a pirate, whereasJack's corresponding mark on Beckett is more figurative. As established in prequel novelPirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom, as a young man, Jack worked for the East India Trading Company after being recruited by Beckett. Although not wantonly rebellious, Jack eventually defied Beckett on principle by refusing to reveal the location of the lost island of Kerma and freeing a shipful of slaves. In retaliation, Beckett branded Jack and scuttled the ship that would become theBlack Pearl, butbecause the consequences of Jack's exploits fell on the head of his immediate superior,Beckett's reputation was tarnished to the point that his social mobility was arrested and his aspirations for a noble title were frustrated. His "mark" was being weighed down by Sparrow's insubordination and his own inability to control him.

The question of social mobility isn't unique to Beckett in thePirates of the Caribbean films. Most centrally, Elizabeth's love for Will inThe Curse of the Black Pearlis complicated by his lower standing, and her ascension to the role of Pirate Lord inAt World's End could be seen as evidence of herbenefiting fromthe greater equality offered by the films' grungily idyllic pirate society. However, as is very rarely the case, Beckett had a specific individual that he could blame for his social stagnation, and his vendetta against Jack Sparrow brought a hateful spin to his lifelong fascination with pirates that would have far-reaching consequences.

Bitcoin market index back to fear on 91st anniversary of 1929 crash – Cointelegraph

Bitcoin (BTC) may be testing $10,000 but further losses would not be unusual, says an asset manager on the 90th anniversary of the Wall St. Crash.

In a tweet on Sep. 4, Raoul Pal said that the past 24 hours BTC price declines were nothing out of the ordinary.

In the post-Halving bull cycles, bitcoin can often correct 25% (even 40% + in 2017), throwing off the short-term traders (or giving swing traders a shot at the short side), he wrote.

Each of those was a buying opportunity. DCA opportunity ahead?

Pal was referring to dollar-cost averaging investing, which involves buying a set amount of Bitcoin at regular intervals to slowly build up a portfolio.

As Cointelegraph noted, the practice has seen proven profitability for BTC, and payment network Square rolled it out as a consumer feature this year.

Comparing Thursdays losses even to recent drawdowns from local highs, Bitcoin has fared less badly in context than price indices would suggest.

A knock-effect of the losses was nonetheless a dramatic shift in investor sentiment, according to the Crypto Fear & Greed Index. The Index, just days ago firmly in its greed zone, fell by more than 30 points out of 100 on Friday to stand at 40 or fear for the first time since July.

While analysts continue to eye the potential for BTC/USD to drop to fill a futures gap at $9,700, across macro markets, eerie historical signs are appearing.

As noted by commentator Holger Zschaepitz on Friday, Sept. 4 marks 91 years to the day that markets began their rapid descent during the Wall. St. Crash.

Just to put things into perspective: After the fabulous gains on the stock market in the 1920s, the crash began just on Sep4th, 1929! he tweeted.

Just like 2020, the event followed several months of recovery in equities, with economist Irving Fisher infamously saying just beforehand that stocks had reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.

Zschaepitzs words come as others warn about the health of gold, silver and the U.S. dollar currency index. In the case of the latter, after days of gains which coincided with Bitcoin price selling pressure, resistance is incoming, Cointelegraph Markets analyst filbfilb says.

Careful with this dump, he cautioned subscribers of his Telegram trading channel.

The other markets are on their last legs. If they survive then we probably do OK here. If they mega dump; you do not want to be heavily leveraged to the longside.

At publication time, Bitcoin traded at around $10,400 after a modest rebound from lows of $10,090, with daily losses still at almost 9%.

China Is No Threat To Bitcoin, Promises Foundry CEO After $100 Million Bitcoin Mining Bet – Forbes

Bitcoin mining is big business. In just ten years, bitcoin mining, where bitcoin tokens are rewarded to those that maintain the bitcoin network, has morphed from a bedroom-based, money-making hobby into a billion dollar industry.

Digital Currency Group, a venture capital company that owns digital currency investing firm Grayscale, digital currency prime broker Genesis, and bitcoin and crypto news outlet Coindesk, this week unveiled its new subsidiary, Foundryand will invest $100 million into mining bitcoin in North America over coming months.

With bitcoin miners in China dominating the network, the move is expected to go some way to rebalance the distribution of those that maintain the bitcoin networkthough Foundry chief executive Mike Colyer doesn't see China as "a major threat" to bitcoin, despite recent warnings from some in the crypto industry the Chinese government could "effectively block or reverse [bitcoin] transactions."

China accounts for around 65% of the bitcoin network computing power, but Digital Currency Group is ... [+] investing $100 million in bitcoin mining in North America to change that.

"Over the past three or four years the story has been on China dominating [bitcoin mining]," Colyer said, speaking over the phone.

In May, research from University of Cambridge revealed China, where bitcoin mining pools have prospered thanks to cheap, renewable electricity, accounts for 65% of the bitcoin network's computing power, with the U.S. the second-largest bitcoin mining country, contributing 7%.

"I personally don't view that as a major threat to bitcoin," Colyer said. "The economic investment that [an attack on bitcoin] would require is immense."

It's thought it would require almost $700,000 per hour to launch an attack on the bitcoin network, according to calculations made by Crypto51.

Last week, the executive chairman of payments network provider Ripple, Chris Larsen, warned in an opinion piece published in The Hill that as the majority of bitcoin network computing power is located in China, the "Chinese government has the majority needed to wield control over those protocols and can effectively block or reverse transactions."

Others in the bitcoin and cryptocurrency community have dismissed the idea.

"Just because there are mining operations in China, it does not mean that hardware can be seized," Samson Mow, chief strategy officer at bitcoin development company Blockstream, told the BTC Times.

Meanwhile, Colyer expects interest in bitcoin mining, which is currently driven by energy and infrastructure costs, to surge over the next three years.

"This isn't about the U.S. dominating the hash rate, that will never happen," Colyer said. "There are going to be nation states that want to participate [in bitcoin mining], especially those countries that have access to low-cost energy infrastructure and a great investment environment."

Digital Currency Group is betting that Foundry, which it says it "quietly" formed last year, can succeed where other bitcoin mining hopefuls have failed.

China-based bitcoin mining giant Bitmain had planned to create hundreds of mining jobs in Rockdale, Texas, in 2018 before scaling back its plans.

Just this year, Layer1announced it raised $50 million to build a bitcoin mining operation in the U.S. but has recently been accused of misleading investors about the makeup of its "founding team."

3.5 Million+ Crypto Wallets Downloaded in July, Active Users up 110% in the Year | Wallets – Bitcoin News

A record 3.5 million crypto wallet app downloads were recorded in July 2020, representing an increase of 81% when compared to the same period last year. In addition, the number of active users went up by 110% between January 1 and August 19, 2020.

According to a report authored by Madeline Lenahan of Apptoppia, the increase in the number of crypto apps downloads is observed right after countries began imposing lockdown measures in the wake of Covid-19.

In the previous year, the number of downloads averaged just under two million, with the month of May and June being the only time when this mark is passed.

Explaining this years increasing downloads, Lenahan, says they didnt think it would last but were surprised to see that the trend has persisted for a few months.

Lenahan offers another possible reason for the growth in wallet downloads:

Cryptocurrency is becoming increasingly mainstream in emerging markets, particularly in regions of Africa. Crypto.com, for instance, has seen a 339% increase in new installations from Nigeria in the past 90 days. Coinbase has seen a 113% increase there.

Apptoppias data shows that Coinbase and Crypto.com have the highest number of users per day with 969,000 and 576,000, respectively. Some of the wallet applications making it into the top ten include Blockchain, Luno, BCH, BRD, Trust and Binance.

Also, recent data from Bitcoin.com shows Nigeria accounting for a greater number of Bitcoin.com Wallet downloads between August 10 and 16. From the total number of downloads of 18,613, Nigeria had 3,473 wallets ahead of the United States, which had 2,802 downloads. The same data shows India in the third position with 1,420.

Both Apptoppia and Bitcoin.com show that Nigeria is cementing its position as one of the biggest cryptocurrency markets in the world.

Meanwhile, in his comments on the increasing download of wallets, mobile app developer Adem Bilican said: Mobile is the way to go for blockchain and cryptocurrencies mass adoption, I am super happy to see these numbers.

Lenahan believes August is likely to set another record as the rate growth appears real and is lasting.

Here Are The Key Levels To Watch In Bitcoin – Forbes

Last month, I showed how Bitcoin broke above its key $10,000 to $11,000 resistance zone, which was a sign of technical strength. Since then, Bitcoin has held onto its gains, but has been consolidating in a new zone between $11,000 to $12,500. If Bitcoin can break decisively above this zone, it would be another bullish confirmation. A break back into the $10,000 to $11,000 zone, however, would be a sign of technical weakness.

Bitcoin daily chart

In May, I showed that Bitcoin was forming a wedge pattern over the past few years that would likely result in a significant move. Bitcoins surge last month caused it to break out of this wedge pattern, which increases the probability of further upside (assuming that the breakout holds).

Safe-havens like Bitcoin and precious metals are benefiting from global central banks extremely aggressive monetary policies that have been launched to offset the harmful economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Mesothelioma Deaths Seem to be on the Rise LegalScoops – Legal Scoops

Recently, the CDC or the Center for Disease Control, just released information pointing out that mesothelioma seems to be causing more deaths than recent years.

This sharp rise scares people in this organization, not to mention regular citizens.

Some of the findings say that asbestos is to blame, but the troubling thing is it might be environmental and secondary exposure, meaning people arent even expecting to be exposed to the deadly substance.

This is a dreadful cancer that attacks the mesothelium and is sometimes hard to detect. It occurs when the protective membrane that helps keep internal organs safe is plagued by a cancer.

However,it is important to understand that mesothelioma should not be mistaken as a form of lung cancer.

While both diseases affect the lungs, they occur in different parts of the lung. Mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lungs, also known as the mesothelium.

The disease can also occur in the lining of the chest, heart, abdomen, and testicles, but it most commonly develops in the lining of the lungs, they write on their site.

The cancer is often triggered by overexposure to asbestos, and it can certainly lead to death as it has been doing to so many people throughout the years.

Most people believe that asbestos exposure is no longer a problem. Most companies dont use the material, and buildings with asbestos are usually updated.

Still, the reality is that asbestos is still here, and it is still affecting many people.

Asbestos does not only affect people who work with the material, but friends and family members could be exposed through secondary exposure if this individual brings the fibers along with him or her unknowingly.

The environment can also carry asbestos, meaning people who werent even thinking of about this issue could be affected by it.

The reality is that there are still enough commercial mining locations where asbestos is actually mined.

These locations may sometimes release asbestos into the air, and this contamination does not get dispersed as quickly as some might hope.

It should also be pointed out that people who work in locations where asbestos is mined or where rocks that contain asbestos are constantly broke may be the ones who carry these mineral fibers home.

It should also be pointed out that natural asbestos does exist in certain rocks or soils, but the amounts are relatively low.

The problem arises when construction or other kinds of activity disturbs these natural deposits and releases the asbestos.

This means that construction, road building, road repair, or even soil and rock harvesting could release asbestos into the environment.

Environmental and secondary asbestos exposure are very hard to avoid, especially because asbestos simply cannot be seen.

Furthermore, any exposure that does occur may be hard to assess properly in order to find the people who might have been responsible for this exposure, especially without the help of an experienced asbestos lawyer.

This is the reason the best way to fight this particular kind of danger is through prevention.

There are a number of steps a person can take to prevent asbestos exposure or at least reduce the risk.

It may feel that this type of exposure is impossible to run away from, but the reality is that knowledge can make a difference.

First off, a family that works in construction needs to make sure that all clothes and shoes are removed quickly as well as sterilized.

In fact, it might be a good idea to simply remove shoes before entering the house since shoes are likely to collect dust while out, which could have some natural occurring asbestos.

Of course, it is important to avoid old buildings that look like they are in a state of disrepair as well as locations that look unkempt and dusty.

It might also be a good idea for a person to only use asbestos-free soil and landscaping material when he or she needs to work on his or her home.

It might be a good idea to wet any ground that is going to be gardened on or played on by kids. The moisture helps keep dust from rising into the atmosphere where it can be easily breathed.

Asbestos is a real threat, and it is important that this is pointed out because many people still think it is a bygone problem.

Clearly, this issue is still here, and precautions must be taken. Laws must continue to regulate activity that may expose people to it.

Could Tumor Treating Fields and Keytruda Work Together for Mesothelioma? – Mesothelioma Guide

Two recently approved therapies for mesothelioma may soon team up in a study.

Novocure, the manufacturer of the tumor treating fields device NovoTTF-100L, announced a partnership with Merck, the manufacturer of the popular immunotherapy drug Keytruda. The two leaders in oncology will collaborate on a non-small cell lung cancer clinical trial.

If that goes well, the next step might be a mesothelioma study.

Keytruda, the brand name for pembrolizumab, received approval early in 2020 from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for specific pleural mesothelioma cases. The treatment is available for patients who express high levels of PD-L1, the cancerous protein that Keytruda can neutralize.

The NovoTTF-100L System device, which was rebranded as Optune Lua, passed the FDAs rigorous approval test in 2019. It was the first FDA approval for mesothelioma in 15 years. Optune Lua is available for pleural mesothelioma patients who cannot undergo surgery. It was approved to be combined with chemotherapy.

If you have mesothelioma and want to learn more about either therapy, reach out to our registered nurse and patient advocate, Jenna Campagna. She can also provide details on clinical trials for mesothelioma, giving you potential access to emerging treatment combinations that could significantly improve your prognosis. Email her at jenna@mesotheliomaguide.com.

Optune Lua sends low-intensity electric waves through the cancer location in your body. Cancer cells are sensitive to these fields, which are tuned to specific frequencies. The waves disrupt cell division, prevent the tumors from growing and eventually cause the cells to die. Patients barely feel the waves initially, and they eventually grow accustomed to them.

Pleural mesothelioma patients wear the device on their chest for most of the day and night. They can even sleep with the device, which is another reason why Optune Lua is one of the least invasive therapies for mesothelioma.

Not only is the device easy and safe to use, but the life expectancy and survival results for mesothelioma patients are exceptional. The median overall survival from one study was 18.2 months. Nearly two-thirds were alive after one year, which is a much better rate than chemotherapy on its own.

Since its FDA approval just one year ago, the Optune Lua device is offered at hospitals across the country. The number of institutions with access to this treatment continues to grow.

Keytruda is the brand name for pembrolizumab, an immunotherapy checkpoint inhibitor drug. Keytruda explicitly stifles the connection between two protein receptors: PD-1 on the bodys cancer-fighting T-cells; and PD-L1 on mesothelioma cells.

When these protein receptors connect, T-cells ignore mesothelioma cells in their quest to locate diseases and protect the body. Keytruda breaks or blocks the connection, which aids the immune systems natural defenses.

In a recent study, 34% of mesothelioma patients with high levels of PD-L1 survived for two years thanks to Keytruda. Nearly 20% had progression-free survival (meaning their disease did not grow or spread) for two years.

The non-small cell lung cancer study is a phase 2 trial explicitly for PD-L1-positive patients. Itll enroll up to 66 participants and begin before the end of 2020. The researchers will examine the response rate, overall survival, progression-free survival and disease-control rate.

William Doyle, the executive chairman of Novocure, said that scientific studies suggest that the use of tumor treating fields together with an anti-PD-1 therapy can potentially augment the immune response, resulting in improved tumor control.

Non-small cell lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma are similar in numerous ways. First, the two cancers develop in the same general region: pleural mesothelioma in the thin tissue lining between the lungs and chest (the pleura); non-small cell lung cancer in the tissue of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma can spread to the lungs, and treatment sometimes involves removing a lung.

The two diseases also resemble one another. Adenocarcinoma is a type of non-small cell lung cancer. Doctors often confuse it and pleural mesothelioma when looking at scans.

Theyre also linked to the same culprit: asbestos. Inhaling or swallowing loose, sharp asbestos fragments can lead to cellular irritation, either on lung tissue or in the pleura. Asbestos is the only known cause of pleural mesothelioma, and it is one of multiple potential reasons for non-small cell lung cancer.

The similarities between the two cancers suggest that a Keytruda-Optune Lua combination could also work for mesothelioma. If the non-small cell lung cancer trial is a success, then the partnerships scope should expand.

Doyle hinted at the possibility of testing the pairing on more cancer types. He called the collaboration an important combination study as we strive to extend survival in some of the most aggressive forms of cancer.

AHN Cancer Institute is First in Pittsburgh Region to Offer Optune Lua, a Wearable, Non-Invasive Treatment for Mesothelioma – PR Web

A model demonstrates how mesothelioma patients can easily take Optune Lua with them during their daily lives.

PITTSBURGH (PRWEB) September 03, 2020

AHN Cancer Institute is First in Pittsburgh Region to Offer Optune Lua, a Wearable, Non-Invasive Treatment for Mesothelioma

Terry OKeefe and his wife Diane love to hike and travel in their RV. The Grove City couple was hiking in the Midwest a year and a half ago when Terry began experiencing alarming symptoms: shortness of breath, racing heart, fainting.

Back in Pennsylvania, doctors made the diagnosis: malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, abdomen and heart. Median survival is only about one year. Mesothelioma is strongly connected to asbestos exposure, and Terry was exposed to the substance during his years working as a boiler operator in the U.S. Navy.

Terry underwent surgery and chemotherapy, both standard treatments for mesothelioma. Then Zachary D. Horne, MD, a radiation oncologist who practices at Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institutes center in Beaver County, as well as at Allegheny General and West Penn hospitals, offered Terry a chance to try a new option.

Optune Lua, a wearable, portable device that delivers low-grade electrical fields to the tumors, is the first new FDA-approved treatment for mesothelioma in 15 years. AHN Cancer Institute is the only center in the region offering Optune Lua for mesothelioma, and Terry was the second patient in Pennsylvania to receive the treatment.

Mesothelioma is a devastating diagnosis. We are thrilled to offer our patients Optune Lua, a treatment that can potentially extend their lives and improve their quality of life, Dr. Horne said. The treatment is non-invasive and delivers treatment directly to the tumor, and so most patients experience only minor side effects.

Optune Lua users can continue with normal daily activities during treatment. Small adhesive patches called transducer arrays are placed on the patients chest and back, and are connected by wire to a battery that the patient carries either in a backpack or across the shoulder. The electrical fields work by disrupting the process by which cancer cells make copies of themselves.

In a clinical trial of 80 patients with unresectable or metastatic and previously untreated malignant pleural mesothelioma who were treated with Optune Lua plus chemotherapy, median survival was 18.2 months, and 97 percent of patients saw their mesothelioma either shrink or stop growing.

As for Terry, the lower part of his lung tumor has completely disappeared, while the upper part has grown only slightly. Dr. Horne is adjusting the patches so that more of the electrical fields are directed to the upper lung, and doctors are also adding a newer immunotherapy to Terrys regime. Terry and his wife arent back to RVing yet, but are enjoying short hikes near their home in the company of their two dogs

We look forward to providing Optune Lua as a treatment option for additional patients who may otherwise feel that they have little hope for the future, Dr. Horne said.

The Optune Lua therapy is typically not covered by insurance plans at this time. Novocure, the manufacturer, however, has financial assistance available for qualified patients.

The best nootropics and what they can do for patient brain health – Chiropractic Economics

Your brain shrinks as you grow older, and even a healthy person can lose up to 20% of brain volume over a lifetime, according to Elysium Health. Nootropics first referred to specific chemicals that met criteria for brain health, but now the term refers to the myriad of products, natural and synthetic, that have an impact on mental skills and mental health. Finding the best nootropics for patients can be a matter of trial and error.

We spoke with Brett R. Martin DC, MPH, MSAc, associate professor for the National University of Health Sciences, who teaches botanical medicine courses and nutrition courses at NUHS.

Nootropics are substances such as medications, vitamins, minerals, herbs, or any other chemical that has the capacity to improve the function of the brain. Some nootropics are ginkgo biloba, L-theanine, ashwagandha, rhodiola, Asian ginseng, and magnesium.

Nootropics may have a variety of different effects depending on the substance that is being used. Unfortunately, for some chemical substances, we dont know the function on the body. However, certain herbs may interact and increase the blood flow to the brain. This increases oxygen and glucose utilization, which could help with attention and memory. Magnesium, bilberry or grape seed extract may work in that manner.

Other herbs can control neurotransmitter or chemical messengers activity in the brain. For instance, ginkgo biloba can act as a serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.Asian ginseng helps to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, which may help with its effects on memory and cognition.

I believe that this is dependent on the type of nootropic agent. Some people consider general stimulants such as caffeine, Adderall, and nicotine to be nootropics because they increase alertness. However, chronic intake of these substances could potentially produce undesired complications later on in life such as blood pressure issues, anxiety, sleep disturbances, or an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Long-term use of most natural substances is believed to be safe. Unfortunately, there is still not a lot known about the long-term use of certain herbs. Consequently, it would be better to use herbs, vitamins, and minerals like grape seed extract, magnesium, and B vitamins that are considered generally safe to use for long periods of time.

The benefit of using grape seed extract is that it not only can improve blood flow and cognitive function, but it has many phytochemicals (plant substances) that are capable of producing a wide array of different effects. For example, grape seed extract is a potent antioxidant reducing free radical production. Free radicals can damage tissues and over time are thought to be a major factor contributing to aging. Grape seed extract has phytochemicals that can reduce inflammation, cholesterol, and the potential for atheromatous plaque formation.

Certain nootropics could potentially help with weight management. Caffeine, which again it is debatable if it is actually a nootropic, is found in a lot of different nootropic supplements. Caffeine can accelerate the metabolism promoting weight loss, but studies have shown that not all the weight that is lost is from fat. There is also a potential to lose a small amount of muscle tissue. Amphetamines were used for years to help with weight loss, but had a large quantity of side effects and complications.

Green tea is an excellent nootropic. It has L-theanine in it, which has been shown to improve mood and increase cognitive function. Green tea is also great for weight loss. It contains epigallocatechin gallate, which can down regulate the effects of the caffeine, so that muscle loss doesnt occur. This herb promotes weight loss by increasing uncoupling proteins in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This causes heat to be created, increasing metabolism, which boosts fat burning effects in a process known as thermogenesis. Several studies show that it helps with weight loss without muscle loss.

There are a few reasons that herbs like rhodiola or Siberian ginseng could be beneficial for sports performance. These herbs can potentially help promote blood flow to the tissues enhancing sports performance. The most likely mechanism is by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to the tissue to keep a person in aerobic metabolism, which is 19 times more efficient than anaerobic metabolism.

These herbs may also affect cortisol levels. The higher the amount of cortisol, the sooner a person will become fatigued. Siberian ginseng has been shown to be really beneficial for sports, while more research still needs to be done on rhodiola.

It really depends on the nootropic. Siberian ginseng and ashwagandha can boost the immune system. Siberian ginseng can also reduce histamine release, mild to moderately and has been used has been used for energy support during chemo and radiation therapy.

Among the best nootropics Ashwagandha can increase the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin and could be beneficial for anemia. It can also promote the release of thyroid hormone. Green tea has been widely used as an anticarcinogenic agent. Ginkgo biloba can reduce insulin resistance and improve pancreatic beta cell function in Type II diabetics. Bilberry [European blueberries] extract is used to improve eye function and can treat any type of retinopathy including diabetic and hypertensive.

There are always contraindications to certain herbal and pharmaceutical products. With individuals who have had a previous heart attack, stroke, hypertension, insomnia, anxiety, or other chronic disease, certain herbs may exacerbate their existing symptoms or disorder. Before attempting to find your best nootropics it is important to know the contraindications and side effects prior to use.

A fast-paced adventure, this is a difficult book to put down, once begun! Fifteen year old Alex Cold is sent to live with his grandmother, still an active travel writer, when his mother falls seriously ill.

His grandmother takes him on assignment to the Amazon in pursuit of an illusive Beast, rumored to be a violent creature in the heart of the rainforest. Others join their expedition, but motives may not be what they at first appear.

Alex befriends Nadia, the daughter of their local guide, and a shaman tells the two children that their destinies involve helping to stop a great evil.

Rationalism butts head with experiences of the spiritual, as Alex and Nadia begin encountering mystical occurrences. The two are swept into the fray of local powers resisting the threats of western infiltration and modernization, into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, into contact with an ancient civilization and with the deadly Beast creatures. Will the children be able to discern the insidious threats, lurking less obviously than clear cutting forests, and will they be able to stop them before ancient ways and peoples are lost?

Part Indiana Jones-esque adventure, part fantasy, and part bildungsroman, this novel is a fun and fantastical take on many contemporary topics, fun and befitting readers of all ages.

A Few Months Before Assembly Polls, What Is Happening in Tamil Nadu? – Swarajya

Some very curious developments have been taking place in Tamil Nadu.

After an anti-Hindu propagandist went obscenely berserk against Hindu Puranas and devotional hymns on his Youtube channel, there came a surge of Hindu anger which forced the government to shut the Youtube channel and initiate legal action against the activist group.

Another Youtube activist, Maridhas, has been relentlessly campaigning against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and exposing its anti-Hindu agenda. He has also brought out the ideological connections between the core-Dravidianism of DMK and the above-said pseudo-rational propagandist.

The DMK, which was initially confident of winning next years State assembly election because of some crucial blunders the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government did during the lock-down, is no more that certain. The anti-Hindu label might hurt the DMK in the coming elections.

Udayanidhi Stalin, who being the son of present party chief M. K. Stalin, is seen as the future supremo of the DMK. Though the DMK was started by C.N. Annadurai, a leader who respected democracy, after its capture by M. Karunanidhi, it fast devolved into what looks like more a family corporation than a democratic political party.

It is a paradox of perversion that the Dravidian movement, which criticises the birth-based systems of Hindu society, which have been reformed and reformulated in inclusive ways through millennia, should succumb to birth-based dynasty control within a few decades of its existence.

So, what Udayanidhi Stalin tweets shows not only the compulsions of politics but also the dynamics inside the family. And for the DMK, the line demarcating family dynamics and party politics is often blurred, if not non-existent.

It should be noted that the rationalism of the Dravidian movement is actually nothing but colonial hatred for Hindu Dharma.

The Protestant mindset of colonial rulers could never comprehend the spiritual symbolism and the Hindu aesthetics of Ganesha. Naturally, they hated this deity and singled him out for humiliation.

The Dravidian movement, being its colonial masters voice, followed suit. So one of the great rationalist deeds of EVR was breaking in public an idol of Ganesha.

Subsequently, in the Dravidian orthodoxy, Ganesha Chaturthi is a festival for which no Dravidianist leader of the DMK vintage would extend his wishes. The same goes for Deepavali and Vijaya Dasami.

The popular joke in Tamil Nadu is that generally Tamil Hindus are happy that the DMK leaders do not extend their greetings for Hindu festivals for the festivals are too good for corrupt politicians to extend their wishes on.

Now comes a tweet by Udhayanidhi Stalin showing a photo of a Ganesha idol made from clay and even adorned with the sacred thread .

Christianity, African Indigenous Church and the Facts of History – THISDAY Newspapers

By Tunji Olaopa

In recent weeks, I have published a series of essays on Christianity and its historical trajectory. From its humble and tortured beginning in Asia, Christianity has risen to become a universal religion, with the worlds most statistically significant followers. Indeed, the emergence of Christianity in world history has been definitive in so many ways. It has shaped the global consciousness and many cultural practices. All across the world, Christianity has transformed a peoples understanding of themselves and of their cultures. Wars have been fought in the name of Christian faith, kingdoms have been built, alliances have been secured. From Handel to Michelangelo, and from the gothic building to the English common law, Christianity has become the common denominator in the way the global world has been built and fashioned.

It is in this recognition of the world-historical significance of Christianity, and especially its confrontation and engagements with non-Christian cultures and religions, that led to my inquiry about its African dynamics. What is the relationship between the historical emergence of Christianity and the African continent? What were the specific historical issues that led to the arrival of Christianity on the continent? How did Christianity participate in the colonial enterprise? How did Africans respond to the arrival and consolidation of Christianity vis--vis their own indigenous religions? All these questions led to my essay, titled Christianity and the African Indigenous Church. In that essay, I was fascinated with the question of how the core Christian doctrinesimmaculate conception, virgin birth, the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesuscould be accepted by non-Christian contexts like Africa. I cited the popular scriptural case of the Egyptian eunuch who got converted by Philip the evangelist in Acts chapter 8. And more than this, I cited the example of an archaeological excavation of a 4th century Ethiopian church which demonstrated the complex mixture of Christian and indigenous Ethiopian beliefs that led to the formation of Christianity in Ethiopian, and marked the emergence of a unique African understanding of Christianity. And finally, I analyzed the establishment, in 1901, of the African Church in Nigeria, under the leadership of Joseph Kehinde Coker, often now regarded as the father of the indigenous church in Africa.

My humble effort at charting the historical trajectory of Christianity in Africa led to some serious reactions from many platforms to which the essay was posted. This tells me immediately that the issue of religion is not just a mere spiritual exercise. Religion has remained for a long time an ideological and intellectual object of discourse. From Karl Marx to Cheikh Anta Diop, scholars have been concerned with how religion facilitate oppression or how it could be harnessed as a tool for social change. Christianity is particularly a point of resentment because of its collaboration with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the racist colonial project. It is therefore to be expected that when African scholars come to any discussion about the dynamics of Christianity in Africa, rage and sentiment must always come into play. This is to be expected. The range of reactions to my essay was as seminal as they were significantly historical. My attention was drawn to many angles of arguments and historical issues that space could not have allowed me to attend to, except I have made up my mind to write a book on the intersection between Christianity and the African continent. In this short space, I will briefly outline some of the critical points raised to further push my argument about the historical and universal significance of Christianity.

As one would expect, Christianity is always in the eye of the storm, from the ideological to the intellectual. The most fundamental of the reactions to my essay were arrayed along these two areas. At the ideological level, there are two strands of debate that attend the incursion of Christianity into the African continent and the dynamics of the formation of African Christianity. Let me briefly elaborate. On the one hand, Afrocentric and African scholars of religion and culture have been at pain to iterate that the foundation of colonialism was laid by Christian missionaries. David Livingstone said specifically about his mission in Africa, I go back to Africa to make an open path for commerce and Christianity. And this charge is further aggravated by the impunity with which Christianity undermined the primal religions of Africa. One requires a long and elaborate but complex response to this Afrocentric charge against Christianity. But a short one that space will permit is that one must at all times be willing to dissociate the essence of Christianity from its ugly misuse by ideological forces. Once we are able to achieve this irreducible core of the Christian message, then it becomes easy to see how Christianity can be seen as being mutually exclusive from the horrors of colonialism and the denigration of the humanities of non-Europeans.

On the other hand, the issues about the formative dynamics of African Christianity are those I have hinted at in earlier articles. One of the responders was unequivocal: The real spiritual and theological foundations of the Church were laid by Africans. This is an appealing statement, but it is only partially true in terms of its historical basis. It is already a solid historical fact that the ecclesiological and theological basis of Christianity owe much to the works of the church fathers, most of whom were Africans. We have such famous names like St. Augustine of Hippo, Origen, Tertullian, Clement, Cyprian, Athanasius, Cyril, etc. all these were basically from Alexandria which played a definitive role in the founding of Christianity. However, Christianity also owes so much to other non-African church fathers, from John of Damascus, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Jerome down to Ephrem the Syrian, Aphrahat, Isaac of Antioch, Irenaeus of Lyon, Justin Martyr, and so many more. It therefore becomes needless to talk about the real spiritual and theological foundations being laid by the African church fathers when they all worked over a continuum to consolidate Christian doctrines.

The second significant issue with Christianity is intellectual. I got critical responders who took issue with my essay based on Edward Gibbons premise against Christianity as the sole cause of the fall of the Roman Empire. This is a critical issue because there is so much to admire in Gibbon and his The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (six volumes, 1776-1788). There is also so much that is intellectually discordant and unfounded. But again, Gibbons theses and arguments must be put in thorough perspectives (which space will still not permit me to elaborate). First, it becomes necessary to dispel the notion that Gibbon was an atheist. Such a claim is easy to make since even his contemporaries were confused as to what religious views he professed. From his Protestant background, his conversion to Catholicism and his reconversion back to Protestantism, as well as his constant engagement with religious views, Gibbon was sufficiently intelligent to understand the fundamental role that religion played in the molding of historical dynamics. And more specifically, he appreciated the more specific foundation that Christianity assisted in laying for human civilization. And this is the reason why, in chapter 38 of the study, Gibbon stated: As the happiness of a future life is the great object of religion, we may hear without surprise or scandal, that the introduction or at least the abuse, of Christianity had some influence on the decline and fall of the Roman empire.

This statement reveals a lot. First, Gibbon recognized the possibility of the distortion of Christianity in its search for the happiness of a future life. And anyone conversant with the great Roman Empire is therefore aware of its historic debauchery and religious complacence. When Constantine the Great, the Roman Emperor, eventually declared Christianity as the official religion of the republic, the downward trend became accelerated. But much more important in Gibbons statement is the methodological allowance that the phrase some influence connotes in the assessment of the factors that led to the decline of the Roman Empire. This tells us that someone of the breath of intellect of Gibbon could not have made the methodological mistake of adducing a monocausal reason for the decline and fall of such an entity as an empire, and the Roman Empire for that matter. Rome was bedeviled by both internal and external dynamics and predicaments that ate at its foundation. For instance, the barbarians outside Romes gate were constantly on its heel. And the politics of intrigues and calumny within was sufficient to weaken the empire for her enemies to triumph.

Lastly, once we critically consider the theological effluence of Pentecostal Christianity, and especially its theology of prosperity, we might be tempted to hail the prophetic analysis of Gibbon and his critique of the distortion of Christianity and the values of hard-work, thrift, personal merit and other values and virtues that are core to the Christian faith. Indeed, Gibbons criticism was leveled not only at the tendency to devote enormous wealth to the church rather than to secular progress, but also essentially to the fetish about the miraculous. Gibbons rationalism was determined to treat Christianity and any religion as a legitimate aspect of general history rather than as a supernatural phenomenon with a final say on human affairs.

My point is simple, and in this I also agree with my responders: Christianity remains a fundamental force in human history. And in this, we are both in agreement with Gibbons readiness to read Christianity as general history. The march of Christianity has done a lot to affect the ways we see ourselves and the destiny of the world.

Joe Rogan’s podcasts with alt-right figures missing from Spotify – Newshub

However Spotify is not censoring the content, according to a perhaps unlikely defender - Alex Jones.

The conspiracy theorist is infamous for propagating wild claims about literal demons controlling the world and turning frogs gay, as well as claiming grieving parents of murdered children are faking it.

But he said his and the other missing episodes aren't the victims of a conspiracy, but rather haven't been migrated due to various reasons like corrupted files, a staggered migration period and some interviews staying on YouTube permanently.

"I asked Joe point blank - and he's always been a straight-shooter - 'is Spotify censoring you?' and he said 'absolutely not'," Jones said in a video this week.

The Infowars broadcaster also said he would feature in new episodes of the show that haven't been recorded yet.

"What they're trying to do is organise things right now, get this migration taken care of and then I will obviously be on the podcast as well in the very, very near future."

The latest episode of The Joe Rogan Experience features Miley Cyrus and was released on Wednesday via Spotify.

It’s Time to Stop the Deadly Rhetoric and the Dangerous Dodge of Both-siderism – Southern Poverty Law Center

The fatal shooting of a man reported to be affiliated with the far-right group Patriot Prayer last Saturday night on the streets of Portland should not have happened.

Im angry that Aaron Jay Danielsons life was taken from him. Im angry about every one of the lives taken in the 98 days since George Floyds murder. Whether the victims are Trump supporters, Black Lives Matters protesters, or law enforcement officers, the deaths that have occurred in this time of upheaval are wrong. We mourn each of these lives, regardless of ideology. And we mourn the lost futures of those who were convinced that taking the life of another human being is how we solve our societal problems.

For all we dont yet know about what happened in last weekends deadly shooting, there are three things that are crystal clear.

First, the blood thats been shed in Americas streets this summer is on President Trumps hands. When he revived the racist call-to-arms When the looting starts, the shooting starts in May, Trump lit a match under two dangerous powder kegs: city police forces blighted with bias and addicted to militarized crowd control tactics, and a growing right-wing paramilitary movement, jacked up by conspiracy theories and internet hoaxes, armed with military-grade weapons and homemade bombs. On Sunday, the president responded gleefully to reports that his supporters were firing paintballs and pepper spray at Black Lives Matters protesters and journalists. In the aftermath, instead of using the deaths in Kenosha and Portland as a call for peace, Trump continued to foment fringe conspiracy theories and ratchet up his rhetoric.

Second, as martyrdom for Danielson is proclaimed on far-right social media, we must remember that the vast majority of the injuries and deaths that have occurred in the protests have been suffered by racial justice protesters. Charlottesville launched the far-right narrative that depicts armed vigilantes and organized paramilitaries as righteous defenders of communities and heritage. Antifa hunting has been encouraged by elected officials and law enforcement from the local level to the Trump administration. Attacks on peaceful protesters now represent an alarming surge in extremist activity, as documented in the Southern Poverty Law Center report When the Alt-Right Hit the Streets: Far-Right Political Rallies in the Trump Era. And yet law enforcement seems all too willing to collude with or ignore these assailants.

Third: These deaths are preventable. They are unnecessary. They are symptomatic of the failure of civil society and democratic structures to rise above the bias and confusion of both-siderism.

Even before Trump famously characterized the deadly white nationalist riot in Charlottesville as involving very fine people on both sides, Portland was looking the other way as armed far-right formations came looking for a fight. Instead of recognizing, at the outset in 2017, the threat to the rule of law and democratic practice brought by groups like Patriot Prayer, Proud Boys, Identity Evropa, Oath Keepers, and Three Percenters as they descended on Portland, the chaos they produced was characterized as a street brawl between two sides that were seen as at best equally culpable.

Patriot Prayer founder Joey Gibson admitted his strategy to a reporter just after Charlottesville. They show up to goad leftists into a fury, then let them fight police while TV cameras roll, Willamette Week wrote, adding, whether antifa protesters brawl with his supporters or just clash with police, its a win-win for the far right.

Despite the transparency of the alt-right street brawl strategy and the known dangers posed by far-right domestic terrorism, a leaked internal investigation found that the Portland Police Bureau viewed far-right protesters as much more mainstream than their leftist counterparts. Other reporting has found active coordination between the bureau and far-right leaders as well as far-right adherents within the police force.

Promises by Portland city leaders to address the bias within the force and to reform police behavior toward protesters have gone unfulfilled. Targeting of protesters reached a dangerous crescendo in Portland in early August with pipe bombs thrown by a man who on video appears to be a retired U.S. Navy SEAL and former Central Intelligence Agency contractor who has worked in Afghanistan and spoken out on social media against the nightly Portland demonstrations, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. On August 15, a right-wing demonstrator fired gunshots at racial justice protesters from his vehicle. Even after these alarming escalations, when Proud Boys and other far-right extremists took to the streets on August 16 for a No to Marxism in America rally, Portland police took a hands-off approach to the vigilantes brandishing weapons and looking for a fight; police declared a riot and moved on protesters only after the alt-right groups had left.

The Trump administration has consistently downplayed the threat of right-wing extremist violence and subverted officials attempts to address it, as detailed by Politico in a recent analysis, They tried to get Trump to care about right-wing terrorism. He ignored them. The lack of any documented threat from the left hasnt slowed the presidents bid to scare America into four more years. The night before a 17-year-old teenager espousing right-wing ideology drove across state lines with an assault rifle to open fire on civil protesters, the Republican National Convention featured the middle-aged white couple who brandished weapons against peaceful protesters.

The misplacement of federal attention, along with the cover provided by this president for racist and antisemitic violence and vigilante mobilizations, is coupled with inattention and confusion by the political center. Business and civic leaders are so busy parsing the distinctions among the overwhelming majority of peaceful racial justice protesters and those committing property crimes some of whom are far-right provocateurs that theyve lost sight of their own role.

Its time for leaders at every level to condemn physical violence unequivocally and stop the deadly rhetoric that encourages politicized violence to come out from behind the false and dangerous dodge of both-siderism and draw a clear moral distinction between hate activity and political disagreement.

Its time for the business community to do more than cut a Black Lives Matter commercial. For city leaders to do more than pass resolutions and then wring their hands when violent extremists come to town. For law enforcement to take seriously the threat to their own safety and the rule of law caused by anti-government formations and white nationalists in their own ranks.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown took a step in the right direction on Sunday when she made the connections: from Charlottesville to Kenosha to Portland, we have seen the tragic outcome when armed right-wing vigilantes take matters into their own hands. She stated, The right-wing group Patriot Prayer and self-proclaimed militia members drove into downtown Portland last night, armed and looking for a fight. Every Oregonian has the right to freely express their views without fear of deadly violence. I will not allow Patriot Prayer and armed white supremacists to bring more bloodshed to our streets.

Last year at this time, the city of Portland became a national model in the fight against bigotry. It was a proud moment when the City Council unified not only around confronting the white nationalist assault on our city, but also in understanding the unresolved bias that exists within policing toward Black, Indigenous and other communities of color and toward those engaging in peaceful civil protest. We need a unified Council now to do three things:

This needs to be the laser-focused work of our current City Council. And its past time for all mayoral candidates to hold a joint media conference denouncing white nationalist and armed paramilitary and vigilante incursions into our city, regardless of political ideology. While they may not agree on the specifics, we need to hear that each is committed to systemic police reform and has a vision for how to build a shared prosperity for Portland.

While this is a story playing out in Portland, it is a story of Everytown, USA. Every local elected official should be studying the lessons of the Rose City. Why? If the political center doesnt stand against the obvious reality of ongoing and deadly race inequality, it will continue to be up to the young people with the stamina to come out night after night to press for change in the streets.

Defending our democratic freedoms and institutions should not be left wholly to the young people in the streets, now branded as terrorists simply for opposing extra-legal authoritarianism and sounding the alarm over the early signs of fascism. Defending our democratic freedoms and institutions is the job of business, religious, and municipal leaders. Defending our democratic freedoms and institutions is the job of the middle, liberals and conservatives.

Its time to stop the deadly rhetoric and the dangerous dodge of both-siderism. Its time for the center to step up.

It's Time to Stop the Deadly Rhetoric and the Dangerous Dodge of Both-siderism - Southern Poverty Law Center

Afraid of a Lurking Evil, a Writer Goes Down the Rabbit Hole – The New York Times

RED PILLBy Hari Kunzru

There are no actual red pills in Red Pill, not even a cherry cough drop. The title of this novel, for those of us who are hopelessly behind on our memes, refers to the process of discovery that the books unnamed narrator undergoes or thinks he undergoes. The term comes from The Matrix (a film I found so intellectually vapid that I couldnt finish watching, however brilliant its visuals), and has since gained currency with everyone from mens rights groups to the alt-right to Elon Musk. Keanu Reevess character faces a choice: Take the blue pill and continue his happy illusory life, or the red one and see the world as it actually is, in all its dizzying, violent, chaotic glory.

The narrator of Hari Kunzrus clever but exasperating sixth novel lives in cushioned Brooklyn safety, a progressive member of the creative classes, an essayist and teacher, a husband and a father. Yet he finds himself suffering from both writers block and a nameless dread, as though something profoundly but subtly wrong is about to happen in the world at large. Both conditions feed off each other, and make him believe that hell be unable to protect his family from any waiting malignity. He broods, and when hes offered a fellowship at a Berlin think tank his wife is happy to see him go. Each longs for a few months of peace; each hopes that hell not only write something but also get his head straight.

The think tank is on the Wannsee, a lake to the west of the city center, and looks across the water to the villa where the Nazis planned the Holocaust; in his authors note, Kunzru writes that hes borrowed the location of the American Academy in Berlin, while imagining a completely different set of living conditions. Nothing there goes as planned, and the narrator quickly begins to see the study center as oppressive. The visiting scholars are required to foster community by working in a shared space and sitting in assigned seats at meals; he refuses to do any of it. Their productivity is logged, and he soon begins to believe that his room is being searched and his every movement monitored by hidden surveillance cameras. Eventually he confronts the centers administration, and is then ordered to leave, well before his time is up.

Red Pill depends on Kunzrus skilled use of a seemingly unreliable narrator. We have to believe that maybe he really is being watched; at the same time, we want to shake him into sense, and with each page he grows ever more puzzling. Just before leaving Berlin, the narrator has a chance meeting with a man called Anton, and uses the encounter to justify his fears. Anton is the showrunner of a Shield-like TV series about a bent nihilistic cop. They talk, head to a restaurant, and the narrator has the sense that the producer is about to initiate me into a mystery, offer me the red pill.

No such luck; Anton sees human life in terms of the squeamishness felt by those who arent tough enough for truth, and the narrator doesnt have the right stuff. Indeed, the narrator soon believes hes being laughed at, and later, unable to let his humiliation go, he starts to stalk the man on the web. That takes him into a territory of alt-right message boards and conspiracy theorists, a cyber kingdom in which Anton looks at home, and in fact appears to be posting under a variety of names.

The London-born Kunzru began his career with The Impressionist (2002), a sprawling historical novel about his fathers native India, but since then his fiction has often used the machinery of the thriller, with its secrets and hidden identities, as a way to explore the contemporary sense of the self. Kunzrus work as a journalist, including two recent and indispensable essays in The New York Review of Books on the web-fueled rise of contemporary autocracy, shows hes a shrewd and unsparing observer of recent politics. In these pieces and others, the generalized sense of dread that the narrator of Red Pill feels becomes all too specific, a dread to which names and causes are firmly attached and open for analysis.

I wish I could say the same for this novel. Red Pill comes most fully alive in a long middle section in which the narrator listens as one of the villas cleaning staff, a former East German punk rocker, describes her experience of Stasi persecution. That conversation stands in counterpoint to his own growing paranoia, his belief that hes being watched and even persecuted by both the think tanks administration and Anton too. But is he? And if so, why?

After leaving Berlin the narrator decides to pursue his obsession instead of going home. He checks into a small hotel in Paris and tries to work out just who the mysterious Anton is, what cause he speaks for and who is served by his cop show, Blue Lives. The narrators computer searches eventually start him off on a physical one, a ludicrous trip to an island off the coast of Scotland, where he sets up in a stone hut and sees himself as waiting for battle. After that, theres a psychiatric hospital all ready to take him in.

Which would seem to solve the formal conundrum on which this book depends. Yet Kunzru has one final and overdetermined twist to offer. Back in Brooklyn the narrator tries to resume his old life, but he still wonders about what lies waiting out there in the dark, and the very end of the novel seems to give him an answer.

Red Pill closes in November 2016, with a party meant to celebrate the election of Hillary Clinton. I went to such a party myself, and remember the stomach-twisting hollowness I felt at the end of the evening. But as the conclusion to this novel it seems a bit obvious. As he watches the returns, the narrator sees something revelatory in a shot of a Trump victory party, something that convinces him that he was in fact right: There is some renewed malignity at loose in the world. Kunzrus own journalism, however, will tell you much more about it than Red Pill does, and for all its technical skill the novel finally sings an old refrain: Just because youre paranoid doesnt mean they arent after you.
