Particularly in the face of todays challenges and changes to how we work and live, the fellowship model is ideally suited to meet the shifting needs of employees and the companies they serve. These lessons learned from over a decade of Fellowships in varied forms, with participants from a wide range of ages, functions, from all over the world, offer insight into why and how this approach to learning is so timely.

What must professional development deliver in the 2020s?

2020 has been marked by great change and disruption, but the workplace was shifting long before the outbreak of Covid-19. The pandemic has accelerated a lot of those trends, making them impossible to ignore any longer. HR and talent professionals have been the front line workers of the workplace, trying to learn and adapt quickly enough to keep up with employees physical, emotional, intellectual, and mental needs.

There are three major functions required of professional development in the 2020s:

These functions of professional development are important to consider as you plan for your team, whatever the size, level, or industry with which youre working. Fellowships are ideally suited to address all three.

But first, what is a Fellowship?

Before diving into the learnings about how Fellowships deliver on those modern requirements for professional development, lets review briefly what a Fellowship is. A fellowship is a learning program, from eight weeks to a year or even two in duration, that includes these three elements:

The topic of the Fellowship can range widely, as can the participants identities. The power of the tool is this blend of interaction on the Me, We, and World levels. By guiding participants independent learning and reflection, facilitating peer conversations, and infusing world-class wisdom and inspiration, the Fellowship approach effectively changes behavior, builds internal motivation, and fosters authentic connection.

What weve learned

Work with hundreds of Fellows, across geographies, ages, sectors, functions, and backgrounds has demonstrated the power of this approach in very concrete ways.

Impact measures one year and longer after the Fellowship confirm that Fellows have adopted and sustained new behaviors. For example, one Fellow reported having maintained the mindfulness practice she started during the Fellowship for more than a year. And recognizing how much that practice improved her creativity and collaborative approach to her work, as well as making her a more empathetic family member.

Another powerful result of the Fellowship is that participants are more likely to stay in a role they were considering leaving. They are guided to connect the dots between the work theyre doing on a daily basis and their larger sense of purpose, which builds motivation and engagement in that role, at that firm. One participant realized the power she had to increase the impact of her firm within the branding role she held, by extending her remit to include internal branding and employee engagement. She also increased her leadership in an informal role organizing volunteer events as a way to connect more deeply to purpose in her current role rather than leaving.

Similarly, another Fellow decided to take on the challenge and workload of managing a Veterans employee resource group, despite having an already full plate. This work supporting other veterans refreshed his enthusiasm about the work and the company, extending his likely tenure there by years. The self-reflection, peer discussion, and expert insights give employees the perspective they need to recognize how and why their role matters, which is the primary driver of what humans want out of work.

Fellowships give employees the confidence, insights, and motivation to expand or extend their work, whether in formal or informal ways. This is incredibly important in todays fast-changing environment, which requires professionals to be constantly adapting and re-skilling to stay relevant and productive.

We see Fellows take on side projects and/or reimagine their roles to better fit their own interests and skills, as well as the evolving needs of their team or company. They often adapt the nature of their work to create more value for their organizations current reality. For example, one Fellow recognized that the data infrastructure she was asked to build wouldnt be relevant to the organization for another five years, with lots of conditionality in the interim about whether it would ever be useful. With the help of peer group insight and expert mentoring, she developed a staged approach to data analysis, beginning with what the organization could manage immediately, followed by six- to twelve-month stages toward the ultimate goal that the team could work toward. This stepwise approach is more resilient, recognizing the mutability of the organizations context, and ensuring that they could make progress even if the ultimate goal shifted or became more distant.

In the process of growing, both professional and personally, during the Fellowship, participants develop authentic relationships that go beyond their work together. These relationships are relevant, and fulfilling, outside of the narrow constraints of role-related cooperation. They enable creative collaboration and career support far beyond the time or framework of the Fellowship. For example, one group of Fellows created a Conscious Consumption resource for all colleagues, when they discovered a shared interest in researching responsible brands to buy from.

The relationships extend beyond the immediate Fellowship group to include participants from other cohorts of the same program. Three alumni of the Fellowship recently connected to sponsor one of the women into a new role after stepped out of the workforce in service of family obligations. These connections based on the shared experience and growth undergone in the Fellowship are powerful within and beyond organizations, throughout the Fellows careers.

By growing together over the course of the Fellowship, authentic, lasting relationships form.

So What?

The results are in particularly during the 2020s, we need the motivation, empowerment for self-learning, and authentic connections fostered by Fellowships. We need these things for ourselves, to navigate our own careers in turbulent times, but as leaders, we also need to provide them to our teams to reach sustainable success. So build yourself or your team a Fellowship!

There is a great deal of expertise among the organizations that have developed and run Fellowships for decades, and you can enroll in those existing programs or customize them for your company. However, if you dont have the resources at this point to lean on external help, you can approximate the benefits of a Fellowship yourself. Whether at work or at home, decide on the topic and objective of the learning you want to do, and find friends or colleagues who want to grow in the same area. Then curate related individual learning and reflection activities, questions for a book-club style discussion, and expert insights to inform the groups learning.

Remember, perfect is the enemy of the good, and in todays context, we need motivation and empowerment to create change, supported by authentic interpersonal connection, as soon as possible.

The surprising new friends who got me through the pandemic – Sydney Morning Herald

I have always been interested in and attracted to people based on attitude, rather than age. Yet the experiences of the women I interviewed sometimes felt like they were from another world, not simply another time or another country. Some of them had survived the seemingly impossible and yet spoke with such humility and stoicism.

Many insisted their stories were not sufficiently engaging to be in a book.

Oh my, how they were wrong.

Val Reilly grew up during the Great Depression where she remembers saving the tea rations to give to her grandmother, as this was her only pleasure. Val insists that deprivation didnt feel so bad when everyone was doing it. She grew up to be a nursing aide, working with tuberculosis patients. She survived a violent marriage and raised four beautiful daughters as a single mother.

Be Ha was raised by loving parents in Vietnam, but their world was undone when the communist army invaded. Her husband was sent to a re-education camp, leaving Be and two young children to fend for themselves for three years. Later the family endured a harrowing trip to freedom in Australia. They spent almost a month at sea in a small boat filled with more than 100 other refugees.

Phoebe Wynn-Pope became an international aid worker when that was far from the "done" thing for a young woman of her background. She bore witness to terrible suffering and hardship all over the world as part of her work with CARE International.

And then there was Dorothy McRae-McMahon, who is positively a force of nature. Dorothy remembers farewelling her father when he left for the war, and clenching rubber between her teeth in her primary schools make-shift bomb shelter. As an adult, she was one of the first lesbian ministers in the Uniting Church.

Our differences were stark and remain so. I have lived a quiet, privileged life compared to these women. Melbourne's lockdown has brought much loneliness and deprivation, and the recession is already starting to bite for many in our community, but I know we will find a way through. Just as these women did before us.

Speaking with these women and collating their stories left an enormous impression on me. I was reminded that supporting others is also a source of personal empowerment. That by dedicating our time and efforts to those we love and care for, we also care for ourselves. I also learnt that while these historical cataclysms are world-shifting, on a personal level there are usually bigger things. We are hurt more by the passing of a loved one than the loss of a job. We nurse broken hearts longer than cancelled plans.

Val, Be, Phoebe, Dorothy and I might have been close girlfriends had we been born into the same generation, Im sure. I feel privileged to have been allowed inside their lives.

Before now, several of these remarkable women had only ever told their stories through the prism of the men in their lives. Indeed, there were moments when the women struggled to tell their own stories, rather than those of the men they loved.

History celebrates the brave wins and noble losses of men, but rarely pays mind to the sometimes quieter, intelligent determination of women; women who were fighting courageously for their survival at the same time, in different ways.

These are women who put their heads down and got the job done, proving their strength through the steadfastness of their actions. These are women who I am privileged to call my friends.

Malcolm Wilson hopes to be more than 8 to 10 pounds of air – The Georgetown Voice

Amid the turbulence of college sports in 2020, Georgetown basketball has a new entry in its long history of advocacy on and off the court. This fall marks the ascension of sophomore center Malcolm Wilson as a national representative for student athletes on two NCAA committees: the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as well as the Mens Basketball Oversight Committee.

Participating in these bodies presents the opportunity to help consider NCAA policy and channel athlete perspectives, a particularly pressing task at a time of unparalleled uncertainty and athlete activism across the sports landscape. As he approaches this daunting new responsibility, Wilson spoke with the Voice about his role and the perspective he brings to representing student athletes.

It was in the summer doldrums that Wilson found both the drive and opportunity that would lead him to this position. At home during quarantine in Columbia, South Carolina after a redshirt freshman season, Wilson found time to reflect on his first year. Though he had not pursued student-athlete advocacy in the past, a year of experience provided a blueprint for action.

It was good to see other students and how they were getting things done. That just made me want to do more than what I was doing, said Wilson. I was approached and asked about whether Id be interested. And I said yes.

In close consultation with coaches and other counselors, he then navigated a multilevel application process that included passing both intraconference and national applications.

Both SAAC and the Mens Basketball Oversight Committee play distinct roles within the NCAAs labyrinthian overall structure. SAAC is a general body of Division I student athlete representatives from each conference. Its purpose is to represent student athletes and improve their experiences, declaring in its mission a commitment to enhance the total student-athlete experience. By bringing together individuals from a variety of sports and schools within Division I, the SAAC is able to provide student athlete perspectives as it reviews and comments on NCAA policy measures. It also can issue recommendations and help set certain bylaws.

As opposed to the broad SAAC role, the Mens Basketball Oversight Committee reflects a narrower, though equally important focus. It is responsible for directly weighing in on NCAA Mens basketball policy, including season and postseason structures as well as potential rule changes. The Oversight Committee is also charged with maintaining and improving the public perception of college basketball overall.

Among the members of the Oversight Committee are multiple Division I athletic directors and mens basketball head coaches, as well as other significant conference officials and administrators. One of only two student athletes on the 16-member body, Wilson is joined by Baylors sophomore point guard Jared Butler, and the two have already spoken as they prepare for their term.

Wilson is clear on his fundamental goal. My role is to be a representative for the student athletes, the mens basketball student athletes across the nation, Wilson said. Were really supposed to be another voice in the room on decisions being made that affect us.

Wilson is not arriving with preconceived notions or agendas. Rather, he says his consistent focus is adding the student athlete perspective to any decision-making process in order to bring the experience of a student athlete and use that to kind of weigh out the things that are being put forward.

Entering fall 2020, both the SAAC and Oversight Committee are confronted with the ongoing challenge that the COVID-19 pandemic poses to college sports nationwide. Speaking just after Georgetowns basketball team was able to return to campus, Wilson described player safety as a prerequisite for starting the mens basketball season. Because he only officially joined the Committees this fall, Wilson noted that significant pandemic planning during the summer predated his term. He nonetheless expressed confidence in the plans and the upcoming oversight process he will have the opportunity to participate in.

In fact, these issues were presented at their first virtual meeting in September, where the Oversight Committee approved a number of NCAA measures to prepare for the shortened upcoming season. Pandemic adaptations were joined on the docket by a policy proposal originating with the SAAC and approved by the NCAA to ensure that contests would not be held on election day to facilitate student-athlete participation. With just a month in the books, these measures show the real changes Wilson can be party to over his term, which runs until May 2022.

Despite the adversity of current conditions and the enormity of NCAA bureaucracy, Wilson also expressed confidence that student athlete perspectives would be meaningfully listened to. I think that all of the coaches and all those within the NCAA, they really value what me and Jared would have to say, said Wilson. Hopefully, they [the NCAA] wouldnt ask for me to come if they were going to just sit me in the corner and ignore me.

Grappling with the challenge of representation, Wilson was open about the difficulty of channeling the broad, varied experiences of student athletes nationwide. In light of being one of only two students on the Oversight Committee, Wilson noted the importance of adequate student athlete involvement.

The more voices, the better from student athletes, Wilson said. At the same time, too many voices can kind of slow things down. So its good to have representatives. Within that framework, Wilson affirmed his cardinal commitment to weigh in constructively on student athletes behalf.

Though this is a new experience for Wilson, key preparation and support comes from the legacy of the Georgetown basketball program. The precedents set by former mens basketball head coach John Thompsons stands for social justice and the ongoing, outspoken support of Head Coach Patrick Ewing for student athlete activism weigh on Wilson. Especially when athletes at all levels are calling for change, Wilson was clear that being on these committees is just one avenue for him.

I see myself using my platform to really push for the things that I believe in. Thats what Im on the committee for, is to speak up about how I feel, said Wilson. Whether its through the committee or social media, or face to face, thats how its gonna be done.

With the Georgetown basketball program and community still mourning the loss of Coach John Thompson Jr., Wilson also shed light on how he remains an important influence. He illustrated how he draws on Thompsons ideas, referencing Thompsons saying about being more than the eight to 10 pounds of air in a basketball.

I think that this role really works into that, because Im doing more than just being a basketball player, Wilson said. Im really trying to get involved within the group on campus, but also other people, Im going to do my best to represent them too.

This vision of basketball as more than just a contest or box score clearly demonstrates how Thompsons legacy reverberates through the program and connects to the broader empowerment of athletes today. On a personal level, Wilsons participation in these leadership roles also fulfills Georgetown basketballs commitment to excellence and personal development. Hailing back to Coach Thompson, Hoyas were defined by rigid academics as well as athletic standards. This idea is also integral to the SAACs mission, which includes the notion that the student athlete experience should include a genuine commitment to personal and leadership development.

Engaging with student representatives, athletic directors, coaches, and other administrators as they weigh live decisions will be a new experience. Wilson encapsulated this roles significance for him. This is really going to give me the opportunity to be a leader on my team, he said. Even for people back in South Carolina, who reached out to me, its a tremendous opportunity.

On the whole, Malcolm Wilson fortuitously picked one of the most difficult and urgent times to assume the mantle of representing student athletes. As he prepares for his first season on the court with the aspirations to a Big East championship, he has taken on an entirely new challenge. Yet despite the complexities of grappling with pandemic adaptation, NCAA minutiae, and broader social justice, he retains his central goal. Succinctly put, he says, I want to do the best for everybody and myself.

We have some good things and we have some things that need to be fixed up."Pittsburgh police and Mayor Bill Peduto are some people who were involved in the Homewood Community Problem Solving Walk that happened Friday afternoon.They got a personal view of problems, such as issues with housing.Peduto said, To be able to hire people from the neighborhood to fix up these beautiful buildings that are almost 100 years old to place that person into that business."Stephen Vinansky with the Pittsburgh Police Department said, "So our purpose is just to encourage everybody in the community to walk with us and express their concerns so we can all work together to enhance the neighborhood."Peduto said this is a step in a comprehensive plan for Homewood that focuses on development and empowerment. Purpose and Empowerment key to overcoming Covid-19 fatigue – Consultancy.uk

With the Covid-19 crisis into its second wave, and little certainty on when the pandemic can be curbed entirely, organisations and their people are increasingly facing Covid-19 fatigue. Dustin Seale, Managing Partner of Heidrick Consulting in Europe, shares his thought on how leaders can overcome this fatigue, by embracing purpose and empowerment.

In a crisis, our human instincts kick in and we do one of two things: Every Man for Themself or Unify and Fight. The coronavirus pandemic ignited the latter and more positive instinct for the majority of people and organisations. Most leaders who adopted these actions were able to power through the pandemics initial phase.

As we now face the second phase, leaders will need to find creative ways to re energise their organisations and replace fatigue and weariness with a reimagined zealous perseverance. The fact that there is no clear end in sight is something that leaders must take into consideration and navigate accordingly.

The drive and energy that the initial shock gave organisations has been somewhat short-lived, however. Our mutual challenge was fighting the virus, now the challenge is this: the organisations that were once hubs of virus-fighting energy and enthusiasm are now reporting Covid-19 fatigue and lethargy. This shouldnt really come as a surprise. Most of us are good in a sprint, but as they say this is a marathon, not a sprint.

There are things we naturally do to restore our lost physical energy on an individual level. We regain our strength by eating right, drinking less, regularly exercising, sleeping more, taking rest days and other practices such as mindfulness.

When it comes to organisations, solutions lie in employee wellness programmes, recognition for wins and contributions, encouraging mindfulness and reflection and ensuring members of the organisation experience valuable family time and holidays. There are two significant strategies organisations can implement in order to retrieve phase one enthusiasm and reignite their workforces energy:

The energy at the beginning of the crisis can indeed be described as purpose-driven. However, that was purpose with a small p. This version of purpose may work to fight the immediate enemy but it is not sustainable. If we look to history we will see countless examples of leaders, teams, companies and even dictators who have used this purpose to unite and initiate short bursts of energy and achievement. Real Purpose is different.

In 2009, Heidrick Consulting helped a firm that was hit hard by the financial crisis to reevaluate and reinvigorate its leadership approach. Like with the current crisis, this firm mobilised an initial energised response but this was shortly followed by a loss of energy and belief.

The leadership team then doubled down to all the organisations employees to the purpose. The business was led with this purpose as the guiding principle. The result was a re-energised organisation and one that won more work and grew faster than any other time in its history. While the market was still not favourable, there was a belief in the organisation that defied the market trend and grew even whilst others were shrinking.

We focused on defining the Purpose of the organisation. This definition comes from analysing the companys positive contribution to the world. Once this is recognised, everyone should be helped to connect personally to this Purpose. A standard communications programme is not enough. The Purpose must be embedded through experiences be they workshops, conversations, meetings, etc. and must generate positive associative feelings reaching the part of the brain responsible for choice and behavioural change.

The individual must feel connected to the work they do and see its importance within the larger organisation while fulfilling their personal purpose. This is no new idea. Aristotle spoke about it, as did Frankl and others. When we are connected to Purpose, we traverse obstacles differently and the work we do creates energy rather than consumes it.

The second strategy is to empower the workforce and make change. The pandemic has seen leaders simply working harder and longer. A few months in and they are worn out. Re-energising involves implementing an approach to work that enables people to see things from new angles and in new lights while taking back the control needed to achieve results. It is equally important to do this in teams. We need other people as catalysts for inspiration and for helping to generate energy and meaning. The current lack of teams and sense of connection drains energy.

Purpose and Empowerment provide organisations and their people a dynamic with which they can reenergise, reignite and persevere.

When we work with organisations we engage our team-based Acceleration Lab to encourage this empowerment strategy. We recently worked with a real-estate company and got them to try out our Lab dynamic. With this methodology, employees are faced with hypothetical scenarios that mirror their real-life work problems. In solving these, participants found a new wave of energy that was echoed in the resultant upward trajectory of the company.

At the start of this process we stared directly in the mirror and saw ourselves doing things the way we normally do, and realised it would not work. This approach unlocked our thinking and has set a new tone and direction for the firm, the CEO of the company said. Insights born out of team environments generate change and reignite a collective energy for organisations.

Do all of the above in ways that connect people with people. We are social animals and part of the fatigue being felt today is based on the loss of real connection. Underpinning connection to purpose and growing empowerment, is putting in the mechanisms for both formal and informal interactions that accelerate both of the above.

Recent studies show that the Oxytocin levels, generated in our posterior lobe, rise in us when in authentic interactions with other people. Oxytocin is critical in the feelings of well-being and optimism and thus reduces fatigue significantly. If youre not connecting people in authentic and productive interactions, they are spending, not gaining energy.

When we combine these two strategies of Purpose and Empowerment we are creating a link between the present moment and the challenges the future may bring. We are providing organisations with a dynamic with which to reenergise, reignite and persevere. With such strategies we are looking beyond the short-term challenge of the virus and establishing a long-term business strategy, underpinned by sustained behaviour changes.

There is a way out of this period of fatigue. Taking care of employees and prioritising these ideals will establish the mechanism to power you through this period of weariness and beyond this era of pandemic.

NASSCOM interacted with the industry during an online policy roundtable organized by NASSCOM on 16 October 2020, to discuss NITI Aayogs draft discussion paper on Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA). The roundtable saw participation from companies who are both actual (for instance, existing Account Aggregator licensees) and potential stakeholders in the DEPA framework. The program for the roundtable was as follows: Overview of DEPA, by NASSCOM team Learning from the Account Aggregator Experience (Speakers: Krishna Prasad, CEO, Onemoney and Prashant Paliwal, CEO, Yodlee Finbit) Learning from an Information Provider/User: Improving the DEPA (Speaker: Ashish Singhal, Head of Credit Business, Experian) Discussion on Areas of Concern The discussion during the roundtable, raised several points with respect to the implementation roadmap for DEPA mission and the foreseeable challenges in the operationalization of DEPA. In particular, the following issues were highlighted by participants: Operationalising DEPA There is a need to ensure timely onboarding of stakeholders, especially, information providers to get the DEPA operational as soon as possible; There is a need for alignment of incentives amongst various stakeholders (data principal, consent manager, information provider and information user) in order to ensure that the quality of service is maintained across the ecosystem, and data sharing happens effectively; There is a need to ensure both high-quality and high-variety data sharing, in order to develop some of the solutions envisaged under the draft discussion paper. Currently the DEPA stops at enabling the availability of data, without considering ways of enabling higher-variety and quality of data; While the discussion paper highlights that the consent manager would be a separate entity engaged only in the business of consent management and it will also be data blind, there is need for detailing in the paper to ensure implementation Simplifying the architecture for asking for granular consent without making it too burdensome on the data principal; Institutional Coordination for DEPA There is a need to highlight the role of sectoral regulators in implementing the DEPA and the need for creation of a dedicated channel of communication between the regulator and stakeholders for continuous improvement, given the evolutionary nature of DEPA; Sectoral regulators should enable participation of more entities as an information provider/user (for example, credit bureaus), and providing an enabling legislative framework for leveraging the consent-based data sharing framework in the most valuable way; There is a need to establish data security standards that need to be followed by stakeholders, and the need for an authority to monitor the implementation of these standards (possibly the Data Protection Authority (DPA) proposed to be established under the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019); and There is a need for greater awareness among data principals about their rights and consequences of sharing or not sharing data, the availability of consent management services etc. The issues mentioned above, and additional issues are being examined by NASSCOM, as we work to formulate a comprehensive response to the DEPA draft discussion paper. North Carolina-real estate broker, Amanda Williams, popularly known as Amanda the traveling realtor, is looking forward to using her experience as a cloud-based broker to help new-age real estate agents find a way to have multiple income streams in todays market.

Amanda is involved in varying levels of the real estate business. I own a short term rental business in North Carolina and Belize where we offer fully furnished homes for 30-60-90 day rentals. We have had a lot of experience with AirBnb properties and now I am teaching other agents how to build their short term rental portfolio using other peoples properties. The idea is to use individual landlords properties to create furnished short term housing options for potential relocation clients in her city, therefore driving more leads to her real estate team.

Amandas urge to help other agents build their portfolio is borne of a desire to alter the status quo of the traditional real estate business, allowing realtors to concentrate on making passive income instead of dedicating long hours to the job without having the option of taking time off and still being able to earn. Explaining her motivation, she said: I decided to create courses and teach all of the agents in my sphere exactly how we have built our passive income to a place where we can travel the world and all of our hard expenses are paid. Its time to reach out and pull my team up with me.

Presently, she is building one of the biggest real estate brokerages in the world. Im currently in Mexico building relationships with real estate agents and brokers and will soon have a team of agents here in Cabo San Lucas selling real estate for the fastest growing real estate tech brokerage in history, which is being called the Amazon of Real Estate, Amanda explained.

Going further, she hinted about taking her father for a cancer treatment to Mexico and discovering the platform that changed her life. While living in Mexico we decided to rent our personal property on AirBnb so it wasnt just sitting there empty. That 1st month we made enough money to pay our mortgage on our home in NC and it paid our rent payment on our beach condo in Mexico. This started us on our AirBnb journey which we now own a portfolio of AirBnb and short term rental properties. We have built multiple streams of passive income through the 3 Fs of AirBnb: Find it, Furnish it, and Fill it.

Graduating a 22-Year-Old Virgin: What I Learned From Going Through Wesleyan Without Having Sex – Wesleyan Argus

This piece was written in response to the testimonies on Wesleyan Survivors Instagram page referencing the pressures that exist on campus in regards to virginity and hook-up culture. It aims to shed light on the prevalence of prude-shaming amongst students, normalize virginity in college, and hopefully, start a conversation.

During the fall of my senior year at Wesleyan, a couple students and I went out to Main Street to celebrate our friends birthday. At some point during the evening, the student sitting next to me at the dinner table started telling a funny hook-up story. Although I cant remember the specific details a year later, the story was entertaining and amusing enough that I kept asking questions throughout. By the time they had finished their story, the student turned to me and asked: What about you Lucie, whats a funny hook-up story of yours? I looked at them and casually replied: Actually, I dont have any. Ive never had sex with anyone. Ideally, that conversation would have ended there. I had answered the question; there was nothing else to add. But this is not an ideal world. At least, not for me. Before I knew it, everyone at the table was staring at me. One second went by, two seconds went by, three Silence. I didnt want to add anythingI shouldnt have to. Yet, I did: Ive just never really met anyone who made me want to wake up to them the next morning.

In that specific moment, justifying myself in front of eight other college studentsmost of whom I barely knewas to why I still hadnt had sex yet was the only way to finally interrupt a silence so loud, I was forced to give up my right to privacy just to ease someone elses discomfort. Id like to say that this was the first time I ever encountered that silence, but it wasnt. Nor will it be the last. Although I filled it out unwillingly that night, this is the silence I want to make visible. This is the silence I want to publicly fill out so that I, and every single late-in-life virgin out there, are so normalized in the first place, that we are never made to feel like we owe anyone an explanation ever again.

I realized pretty quickly after arriving at Wesleyan that being physically intimate with someone I didnt know wasnt fun for me, nor particularly pleasurable. It made me feel like I was being treated (and treating the other student) as a body, rather than a person. I understood I needed to have some kind of emotional connection in order for me to feel sexually attracted to a person, and to make me feel comfortable enough to have sex with them. The problem is that finding someone who desired the same thing I did on a college campus, where most people are focused on figuring out sexual compatibility before even considering emotional compatibility, was like trying to find a needle in a hay-stack. Its not impossible, but its definitely difficult to find.

Not only was I looking for something not often found at Wesleyan and had no plans on settling for anything else, I was also a walking tabooand that didnt feel right. Why should I feel ashamed for knowing what I want? Why should I be stigmatized for not having found someone I liked enough yet to want to have sex with them? The answer is simple: because I was now past societys due date, and my inexperience was no longer deemed acceptable. Apparently, when youre a virgin over 18, that means theres something wrong with you.

By the end of freshman year, I had already noticed how the conversation around virginity was practically nonexistent on campus. I couldnt understand whyespecially, since I knew I wasnt alone. Everyone tells us that sex in college will be better, meaning a lot of us graduate from high school as virgins. Yet, when we actually get to college, everyone expects us to have already hadsex in high school. Where and when are we supposed to get our experience then, if no one wants to sleep with us because we dont have the experience? It was like dealing with one of those job applications where the employers ask for 7+ years of experience for an entry-level job. On top of that, I knew for a fact that, while some of us are into hook-up culture, many of us arent. So, why was no one talking about this?

As you can tell from the beginning of this piece, I am no stranger to speaking openly about taboo topics people often feel uncomfortable addressing. I grew up in a family in which I was taught that talking freely and honestly about sex was considered healthy. Virginity wasnt going to be any different. Thankfully, by the time I had arrived at Wesleyan, I had grown secure enough with myself and what I wanted for me to know that societal pressure wasnt going to be strong enough to destabilize either of these things. There was nothing wrong with me and I knew itwhy should I be embarrassed about it? So, I began opening up about it.

My virginity wasnt something I would bring up out of nowhere; it was, however, something I would always casually talk about whenever the topic of sex, or hook-up culture came up. Usually, the other person would give me a concerned lookone that often screamed Oh no, theres a problem with herwhich would quickly disappear after I told them I knew what I wanted, and that it simply hadnt happened yet. As always, providing reassurance was needed to ease someone elses uneasiness about my own virginity.

Despite my grievances with the societal norms that stigmatized my virginity, I still consider myself very lucky. I was never ostracized by any of my friends for my inexperience, nor did I ever feel judged for it. In fact, my friends and I talked about sex all the time. Whether it was to talk about our favorite kind of porn, the best ways to effectively communicate with a sexual partner, red flags to look out for, or recommending sex toys to each other, I always felt included and able to actively contribute to conversations about sex. Looking back, I definitely believe the main reason my friends were so open about their own sex lives with me was because I was so open about the lack of mine. Knowing they regularly hooked-up and I didnt, never made me feel self-conscious. We all have our preferences, and my friends desires being different from my own didnt invalidate minethe same way that mine didnt invalidate theirs. It just meant we were into different things, and thats perfectly fine. Although I was never personally stigmatized by any friends, that didnt mean they didnt have some deeply problematic comments to say about virginity every now and then.

So, I ask again: why was no one talking about this at Wesleyan?

Because when I was a sophomore, a guy who was trying to impress me at a party spoke about a girl he used to have a fling with, mocking her for being a virgin when they first started hooking up. Because when I was a junior, a crush of mine stopped actively flirting with me the day I mentioned that I had never had sex with someone else. Because when I was a senior, one of my closest friendswho knew I hadnt had sex yetsaid he wouldnt have casual sex with this girl he was seeing on campus if she told him she was a virgin.

This is the kind of culture that is perpetrated on campus and that pushes people into feelings of shame and secrecy. This is the kind of culture that pressures students to force themselves into sex even though they may not want to or feel ready to. This is what teaches us that the only thing that makes us worthy of pursuit is how much sex we have had.

People talk about virginity as if its a personality trait; as if it defines the way you are, the way you think, the way you interact with others. Some believe they can recognize a virgin from a mile away. Some people think that being a virgin means you reject sex, dont know anything about it, and are not open to exploration or kinks. Others believe being a virgin means youve never had any opportunities. I once had a friend say to me: You still havent had sex?! But youre so pretty and confident!, as if theres somehow a correlation between attractiveness and how much sex you have. Others treat virgins as if they have some kind of disease: you mention youve never had sex with anyone and poof! Suddenly they stop talking to you. Lastly comes the students who dont want to hook-up with you because they say youll get emotionally attached. Ninety percent of the time, what this person is really saying is I want to be able to treat this person like shit without feeling guilty about it afterwardsas if being sexually active and participating in hook-up culture suddenly warrants being disrespected.

Unfortunately, the sex positive discourse that exists on campus does very little to nothing to help. As someone who identifies as sex-positive herself, I fully recognize how important it is to cultivate sex positivity and discuss sexuality to ensure empowerment and safety. However, its specific discourse that exists at Wesleyan is one that speaks exclusively to those who are sexually active. Sex positivity should focus on sex itself yes, but it also includes empowering individuals to make their own decisions in regards to sexregardless of what those areand teaching other students to accept and respect those. Yet, in my four years at Wesleyan, never once was virginity mentioned during any of the sexual health awareness interventions I attended, or addressed in any of the general discussions students had about sex positivity. Nor was abstinence for that matter. This is the kind of restrictive approach that implies that sex is imposed on us, and that teaches us that sexual empowerment can only be achieved through sexual experience. For a campus that prides itself on acceptance of all and that works tirelessly to destroy the harms of slut-shaming, Wesleyan falls terribly short in tackling its silent opposite: prude-shaming.

So, what happens when your experience isnt represented in the day-to-day conversations surrounding sex, and you find yourself continuously being the butt of jokes? You internalize the judgement, the shame, and societal expectations. Reading some of the testimonies on Wesleyan Survivors Instagram page makes it clear that a fair amount of students who havent had sex yet feel alienated on campus. People feel so ostracized by their peers that they are ready to accept a sexual situation where they may not be comfortable, just to get it over with and fit in. Even then, most do everything in their power to keep their virginity a secret during their first timeneglecting open communication all just to avoid the possibility of embarrassment, mockery, or rejection.

When youre a virgin, people assume what sex means to you based on outdated, sexist, purist clichs and stereotypes. People assume that if you waited that long, it must be because you want it to be with someone special. People assume, but no one ever takes the time to ask. Thats the problem. Never once was I asked by anyone at Wesleyan What does sex mean to you?. Instead, people thought they knew what I wanted based purely on their own prejudice. Assuming how I want to have sex for the first time without asking me means robbing me of my agency. It tells me that, because of my age, my ability to decide what I want will always be overpowered by the unspoken assumptions of society and my future sexual interests. We are so focused on policing each others bodies and what we should do with them, that we forget there is a human standing in it.

Being a virgin does not define you. In fact, sexual experience is not a prerequisite for being sexually mature. Some virgins work in the sex industry, some own sex toys, some watch porn regularly, and some love educating themselves about sex. Sex itself doesnt define you either. Youdont lose anything when you have sex for the first time. You do just that: you have sex for the first time. The only reason one might perceive themselves differently after becoming sexually active is if their sense of worth is dependent on sexual validation.

What defines losing your virginity anyway? Is it when you first experience penetration? In that case, I lost mine to my gynecologist when I got my first pap smear. Some will tell you that no, penetration has to be of a sexual nature. Then, I guess I lost mine to myself the first time I ever masturbated. Now, you might say that it has to be sexual penetration with someone else. Okay, lets talk about foreplay then. Lets talk about queer sex. Is foreplay not sex? Is queer sex not sex? If you have sex with someone without penetration, have you not lost your virginity yet? My point is that sex means different things to different people and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Virginity was historically built by heterosexual, cis-gendered men in order to make you believe that their dick singlehandedly had the power to change you. Virginity always has been, is, and always will be a cultural construct.

On top of that, sex does not have the same importance for all of us, and not everyone grew up viewing it the same way. Some associate sex with intimacy, and others dont. Some virgins are into hook-up culture, others are into friends-with-benefits, and some are into relationships. Others believe sex is for marriage. Some get emotionally attached; others dont. In fact, whether or not someone gets emotionally attached after hooking up has everything to do with the individual themselves and how they approach sex, and nothing to do with whether or not theyve actually had sex before. The messiness of emotions doesnt suddenly disappear when you become sexually active. Some virgins havent had sex yet because intimacy makes them uncomfortable, and some havent met anyone who made them feel safe yet. Some are still healing from past trauma; others are suffering from health issues. Some want to wait for their first love, and some want to wait until their faith allows them to. Some dont experience sexual attraction, and some simply dont feel ready yet.

Although the stigma surrounding virginity made going through college without having sex difficult, there were a lot of benefits to it that I am incredibly thankful for today. Being by myself physically and emotionally for 22 years has allowed me to fully focus on myself. It has given me the time to learn how to love myself, build high self-esteem, and develop a deep understanding of what I want, in what context, and with whom.

In addition, despite the sex positive discourse on campus not being as inclusive as it should be, there are a lot of a great aspects to it that I decided to adapt and apply to myself to validate my own experience. Even though Ive never had sex, I feel sexually empowered. I have stretch marks, cellulite, tiny boobs, wide ankles, a horrendous tendency to slouch, and yet Ive grown to love every single inch of my body (okay maybe not my ankles, but at least Ive accepted them). The sex postive discourse on campus also taught me what kind of treatment my partner and I both deserve: respect, pleasure, safety, and active communication and you bet Im going to make sure we both get it. I also learned how to make my own choices, allowing me to take ownership over my sexuality. I know that hook-up culture, personally, makes me feel like shit which is why I made the choice not to partake in it. Making your own decisions and respecting your desires is empowering. Different things may be sexually empowering to you but they may not be for others, and vice versa. We all have different ways of reaching sexual empowerment that are unique to us. Sexual experience can be part of it, yes, but it also doesnt have to be and thats what we desperately need to normalize.

While I was researching for this piece, I quickly realized that almost every article I found online about the subject was either focused on asking students what they thought about college virgins (as if we should even care), or written by people who have already had sex. It seems clear that no one is down to tell you being a virgin at a later age is okay while theyre still a virgin themselves. People wait until they have sex to tell you that. Well, to those of you out there, I just graduated from college, I havent had sex yet, and I want you to know that you are perfectly normal. In fact, there are way more of us than you think. According to the Online College Social Life Survey, 20% of the 24,000 American college students involved in their study graduated college without ever having had sex. That is 1 in 5 students, so dont let anyone fool you into thinking youre alone.

There is nothing wrong with you; there is something wrong with the culture we perpetuate. We fit ourselves into what society says we should be and should do, while neglecting what we actually want ourselves. That is absolute trash and we all know it. So why are we so afraid of college virgins? Why is there still such a stigma around it? Because we, as a community, are still adamant on regulating and embarrassing others when we think theyre doing things differently.

My decision to be open about my virginity was both personal and political. I understood that if I wanted students on campus to start talking about it free of any misconceptions or judgement I needed to be part of that process. I needed to normalize it myself. It was also a way for me to guarantee that my virginity would never be used against me: if I was open about it, it meant I could never be shamed for it. In doing so, I took ownership over my own narrative, and had full control over how I was perceived by those around me. In a way, being honest about my virginity also made it easier to spot the shallow students who obviously werent worth my time. Talking openly about my virginity felt right to me but it may not be for everyone, and that is very important to recognize. Sex is not only personal, it is also private, and it is a choice.

If you want to wait until you feel ready to have sex, and then have a one-night stand with a stranger as your first time, do it! If you want to wait until youre with your first romantic partner, go ahead! If waiting until your wedding night is what makes you feel empowered, then do that! If thats what you want, then youre doing it for the right reason: youre doing it because you want to not because your friends, your partner, your family, or society says you should. Find what works for you, and dont settle for anything less. People will judge no matter what you do with your body, so you might as well stay true to your desires and do what makes you happy.

If anyone ever shames you, laughs at you, or rejects you because of your inexperience, that is direct feedback that this person is not worthy of your company. You want to be around people who understand, respect, and accept that you dont have to do what everybody else does just because everyone else is doing it. Most importantly, if anyone ever pressures you into having sex, or makes you feel like you somehow owe them your virginity, I hope youll be kind enough to yourself to walk away. That is manipulative and toxic, and you deserve way better than that.

No matter what you decide to do, remember that you dont owe anyone anything. Sex is not a competition. Regardless of your age, your gender, your race, or your sexual orientation, you owe it to yourself to do whats best for you. If you are not in place to go through with it, or if the person youre with does not make you feel safe, then wait until you are 45 years old if you need to. There is no age limit to have sex. You deserve to have sex the way you want to have it, when you want to have it. You are beautiful, you are worthy, and you are in control.

So, what does the ideal world look like for me?

My ideal world is one where I am never made to feel like I owe anyone an explanation for my virginity because of my age; one where, instead of encountering silence, I am met with someone saying thank you for being so open and honest. I want to reach a point where my virginity no longer matters more to everyone else than it does to me. I want to get to a place where it is not my job to ease your discomfort about my sex life; it is your job to work on your own issues since youre the one whos prejudiced.

This is the culture we need to actively work towards on college campuses, as well as everywhere else. The narrative that feeds slut-shaming is the same that enables prude-shaming: they work within the same discourse and they fight the same war. Having too little sex? You get attacked. Having too much sex? You get attacked as well. Its a fight we simply cannot win when we condemn one but not the other. Same goes with toxic masculinity. We encourage men to break away from harmful masculine ideals, yet we shame them when they dont fit into some kind of playboy mold. Its hypocritical. We need to be as adamant to call-out prude-shaming as we are to call-out slut-shaming and toxic masculinity. Sexual liberation is about freedom of choice; its about feeling confident regardless of whether you want to have sex or not, no matter how much or how little you have, and regardless of how or when you have it. You cannot claim to be sex-positive if you exclude or judge others for not having sex.

It starts with every single one of us, and it is not exclusive to one gender. If you hear your friend or anyone making harmful comments, criticizing, or ostracizing someone because of their virginity or inexperience, it is your responsibility to call them out for the culture to change. In case youve forgotten, you were a virgin too at some point.

The best four years of my life were spent at Wesleyan and not a single second of it was spent having sex. Id be lying if I said dealing with the stigma was easy. However, not having had sex doesnt mean you cant participate in Wesleyan social life. You can dance your ass off on a table at a party, wearing your sexiest outfit, and still be a virgin. You can go back to someones room after a night out and still be a virgin. You can get into Burlesque and participate in Wescam and still be a virgin. Being a virgin doesnt mean you cant feel sexy or be sexual. Take it from a virgin who did all of those things, and enjoyed every single one of them. Being myself, doing what I liked, and hanging out with those who respected me ended up making my whole college experience so much more fulfilling than if I had forced myself into having sex with someone I didnt trust, simply because of the pressures of hook-up culture.

Sex seems incredibly fun and I look forward to having it, but that doesnt mean Im going to do it just because people say Im too old. I deserve to wake up next to someone I have built a real emotional bond with, and I dont care what anybody else has to say about it. If I ever get those urges, I can take care of them perfectly well by myself. In the meantime, my sexy 22 year old virgin self has a career to start, creative projects to create, friends to hang out with, and a life to live. At the end of the day, sex isnt everything.

Empowering Student-Athletes Is at the Heart of an Exciting New Fellowship – UVA Today

Anybody whos ever run, at either a competitive or recreational level, knows that the mental challenges of exercise are sometimes far greater than the physical ones.

Thats just one reason why Emma Myer, a second-year University of Virginia student who is a member of the track and field and cross country teams, was intrigued by the opportunity to take part in the Citizen Leaders and Sports Ethics Community Impact Fellowship, a new leadership program for student-athletes started by UVA Athletics and UVAs Contemplative Sciences Center.

Myer was joined in the 12-month fellowship, which started last spring, by Madeleine Boylston, a second-year student on the volleyball team; Morgan Murphy, a second-year on the softball team; and Quentin Matsui, a second-year on the lacrosse team.

Fellows identify a specific, pressing challenge to the well-being or flourishing of their teammates or the larger community of student-athletes at UVA, then spend their fellowship year designing and implementing programs to overcome those challenges with evidence-based tools, such as mindfulness meditation and other contemplative practices.

The fellowship aims to empower student-athletes to address unique issues they face particularly the strain of balancing competitive sports pressures with academic responsibilities and social and emotional well-being.

Our goal is to propel them toward their own interests, their own values, their own life goals, said Heather Downs, director of academics at UVA Athletics. Were integrating a lot more reflective experiences so that students can really dig deep and figure out more about themselves. Student wellness is the motivating factor for everything were doing.

Leslie Hubbard, the Contemplative Sciences Centers program director for student engagement and contemplative instruction, said the fellowship is designed as an opportunity for student-athletes to become community leaders.

It allows them the chance to develop the knowledge and long-term skills to pursue more engaged, healthy, values-driven and successful personal, professional and civic lives, at UVA and beyond, she said.

Heres a look at what Myer, Boylston and Murphy have been working on since the programs inception.

The Challenge: The specific challenge that I identified and wanted to work on was mental strength. Mental strength within an endurance sport is probably just as important as, if not more important than, an athletes physical capabilities. Mental strength is something that is hard to practice and make better, so my goal is to provide resources and helpful skills in order to strengthen my teammates mental strength capacity.

The Plan: My plan for informing my fellow teammates about mental strength and what they can do to build their strength is through a blog. I have been uploading blog posts every two weeks with stories, information or helpful tips to increase mental strength, on and off the track.

When I was chosen for this fellowship, the coronavirus pandemic had not yet hit our country, so I didnt originally plan to incorporate it, but I have included, and plan to include, more posts about time management, stress and handling the coronavirus pandemic as a student-athlete.

I have uploaded a post about mindfulness meditation and its benefits to running on my blog. Most people dont know what mindfulness is in-depth and its true benefits, so I tried to inform my teammates on a basic level and educate them on how it can help them in practice and while competing.

The Takeaways: In surveys, I plan to ask my teammates if they use the practices Ive taught them, and if they have, has it helped them? I will also assess if they are more knowledgeable about mental strength itself and how much power it has over your performance.

Overall, my fellowship experience has been great. Ive had the chance to get to know Leslie Hubbard more and learn important information from her. I look forward to continuing this journey.

Although my job in this fellowship is to teach and implement tactics for my teammates to use, Ive also learned so much by doing research and finding out what mindfulness meditation can really do for a runner.

The Challenge: The challenge I decided to focus on was the lack of connection between athletes and the larger community. I think athletes miss out on connections with a bigger purpose and sense of community due to chaotic schedules and a lot of stress. I really wanted to find a way for UVAs athletes to come together and work toward a bigger purpose or goal.

The Plan: I decided to partner with UVAs Team Impact, which is a national organization that works with college athletics to provide children with chronic or life-threatening illness a support system, to create an event. This event will allow each team and their Team Impact matches to connect with one another and other teams.

While we are not using meditation or mindfulness techniques in my fellowship, we are focusing on connection. Connection is important to stay healthy and lead a purposeful life, and it is a prominent dimension to the contemplative sciences.

The Takeaways:

We are still in the planning process of how we will measure the effectiveness of the project. We are hoping to use surveys to determine whether or not those who participated felt that they were connecting to a larger community and better connected to UVAs athletic community.

I have really loved my experience working on this fellowship so far. My adviser, Leslie Hubbard, has been great to work with, and this fellowship has really pushed me out of my comfort zone.

This fellowship has really pushed me to become a better leader and organizer. Due to COVID-19, our plan had to be adjusted constantly and we had to adapt very quickly because of different circumstances. We faced many obstacles in the planning stages and we had to be very flexible and inventive to work around a lot of restrictions. I had to learn to think out of the box.

The Challenge: When I first started this project, my team was facing a lot of injuries. There was just injury after injury, and its hard to keep the performance at a high rate when players are going in and out. So the pressing challenge that I focused on was the how to keep team chemistry when the team and players on the court are continuously changing. How do we keep our team chemistry/groove/mojo through adversity?

The Plan: My project focuses on team chemistry. It is about improving the relationships on the team, on and off the court, because I strongly believe that off the court is just as important as on the court.

I am using the platform Flipgrid, where the team can individually send in video responses to questions another member asks. For example, What do you hate people saying to you when you make a mistake? or What type of practice do you thrive in? Serious or light-hearted?

Questions like those to get to know each other better. In the ideal world, we would be doing these small team-building activities together, but with everything going on I had to change the project a little bit.

The Takeaways:

I think this project highlights the importance of the mind when it comes to sports. Our mental game is a HUGE factor to our performance and playing such a team sport like volleyball, it is so important to find the trust and vulnerability and other aspects of wellbeing with each other that the contemplative sciences explores.

The fellowship experience has been so fun. Leslie is amazing and so supportive and helpful with coming up with ideas and being creative during this time. Its not that easy to do this during the circumstances, but I think Leslie, the other fellows and I have adapted pretty well.

The premise is this: spending so much time with our heads in the digitized clouds of technological innovation, we ourselves are adopting the very qualities that we seek to instill into our creations.

Weve created processors and supercomputers that can operate with the kind of efficiency that we cant even begin to understand and, while were itching to literally incorporate such technical savvy into our own organs, weve begun to emulate these desired characteristics however we can.

We want to be efficient. We want to be optimized and we want to view ourselves as upgradable. We want more RAM, faster processors, more user-friendly interfacing, improved connectivity, a better battery. And were working on it, furiously.

But how far is too far?

Its almost asinine to suggest that we should halt such progress because, after all, progress is progress. Why not improve ourselves at such a relentless capacity?

Eventually, we have to examine the meaning which underlies the sense of progress. We ought to realize what it is were hurdling towards and we ought to stop to contextualize the journey rather than the destination.

Assume that we bring ourselves to a state whereby we can install applications into our consciousness that eliminate the need for sleep. Suddenly, we gain a tremendous amount of time. Assume that we also adopt the capability to calculate like a quantum computer and exist in a state of optimized rationality.

Where is the reward to be found in this incessant and pursuit of perfection?

Is it in the fact that we can work harder for the corporations which employ us, or in the idea that we can now add more to our itineraries? Is it really a blessing to be able to fit five lifetimes in the span of one or might we be losing something in the simplicity of life today, something that may have already been lost when compared to the simplicity of yesterday.

Already we may miss the idle time that used to be afforded to us and the peace of mind before social media exploded into our existence; already we may envy the stillness and gentle lucidity of the natural human experience.

When we step back to look at whats really happening, we can almost classify our behavior as rather juvenile. Like children who become enamored with something they so desperately want to emulate, were willing to lose ourselves in our obsessions and drift along into the echelons of novelty as we forego the fundamental elements of human existence.

To simply live, disentangled from the contexts and constructs. To free ourselves from the traps of the hyper-obsessions which currently zip about, telling us what specific sort of diet and nutrition scheme works best or how we ought to think about thinking so we can think more efficiently.

The singularity ahead maybe its not about us creating self-aware technology or being able to slip into some eternally-comfortable form of virtual reality; maybe its not about us integrating with technology on a physical level but, rather, in a complete mental capacity, whereby we effectively become what were looking to create.

Why A Gamer Started A Web Of Disinformation Sites Aimed At Latino Americans – FiveThirtyEight

This article was written in collaboration with First Draft, a nonprofit organization that provides investigative research to newsrooms tracking and reporting on mis- and disinformation.

When we picture the entity behind a network of disinformation websites, a few archetypes spring to mind: shadowy figures intent on interfering with democracy, Russian agents, Macedonian teens. Not usually included: a gamer from a suburb of New York City who sells coffee beans with his wife at the local farmers market on weekends. But thats precisely who was behind three sites that, until last week, were pumping out misleading, hyperpartisan Spanish-language content on both the left and right. They were just a few sites in a broader ecosystem of misinformation and disinformation that spreads such narratives to millions of Americans. But their story has something to tell us about the misinformation industrial complex overall.

Sean Reynolds, a YouTuber, gamer and entrepreneur, was the owner and operator of three websites and affiliated Facebook pages that peddled in misinformation, predominantly in Spanish. The existence of the network was first reported by Politico last week, but an exclusive interview with Reynolds revealed why he started the sites.

Namely, he said, he saw an opportunity.

These websites and the content on them do not reflect my personal political leanings, Reynolds wrote in a direct message on Twitter. I am non-discriminating towards opportunities where there is demand and no supply, which in this case, there was no political opinion pieces written in Spanish on Facebook, so I found writers (ghostwriters) interested to fill that demand. Reynolds did not respond when FiveThirtyEight asked whether he speaks Spanish but did say he does not personally write the content on the sites. In a video he posted on his gaming channel, he identified as half Jamaican and half German.

Since 2017, Reynolds has operated the three websites and their affiliated Facebook pages: PoliticaVeraz.com, which published right-leaning content, AlertaPolitica.org, which published left-leaning content, and LeftOverRights.com, a left-leaning site which initially ran English-language stories but switched to publishing in Spanish this August. When all three sites were active, they would each regularly publish 5-10 stories per day and then spread those stories through Facebook, where they would typically attract thousands of shares. After FiveThirtyEight contacted him, Reynolds took all three sites and their Facebook pages offline.

A FiveThirtyEight investigation found multiple links that tied Reynolds to the sites, including a common server and IP address among his personal website and his other confirmed businesses, the same Google AdSense and Analytics code for his personal sites and these pages and corporate records listing Reynolds as a process agent for both Left Over Rights LLC and Alerta Politica LLC (there was no record of an LLC for Politica Veraz). Reynolds also confirmed to FiveThirtyEight that he ran the sites.

Much of the content these sites published was misleading and hyperpartisan. A recent story on Politica Veraz, for example, claimed that Joe Biden had forgotten the words to the Pledge of Allegiance, when in actuality he quoted part of the pledge for emphasis in a speech. Meanwhile, recent stories published on Left Over Rights deployed spin from a left-leaning perspective, such as a story about the vice presidential debate declaring Sen. Kamala Harris had destroyed Vice President Mike Pence by asking him not to interrupt her.

The disinformation on Politica Veraz, in particular, often echoed messaging that was already circulating in far-right communities online and among followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory, pushing it towards a more mainstream audience. One article claimed that President Trumps life was in mortal danger after he gave a speech at a Whirlpool Corporation Manufacturing Plant in Clyde, Ohio, where he said he had many enemies and that this may be the last time you see me for a while when discussing lower prices for pharmaceuticals. And while Reynolds said the sites content had minimal reach, that story was shared more than 6,000 times on Facebook, according to social media data tool BuzzSumo, and received nearly 40,000 interactions (reactions, shares, and comments combined). Similar messaging had been amplified by right-leaning users on Twitter before the Politica Veraz piece was published, including a tweet from an account that regularly shares theories associated with QAnon that was retweeted or quote tweeted more than 12,000 times.

Reynoldss sites are far from the only source of misinformation targeting the Latino community. There are sites, Facebook pages and YouTube channels that operate on the margins, attracting little mainstream notice while garnering audiences in the hundreds of thousands. Their stories rife with misleading spins on the news and outright falsehoods are shared across social media and privately in messaging apps. They target communities that have fewer trusted sources that cater directly to them, according to media experts we spoke to, and amplify misinformation originating from extremist communities. And experts say this kind of misinformation can lead to voters not only being misinformed, but also feeling disillusioned by the political process.

Nevertheless, Reynolds said his goals werent necessarily to inform, misinform or disinform, but to make a little bit of money. So little money that he didnt think twice about taking the sites down as soon as he was contacted by a reporter.

I will say, though, that these websites (all three) were scheduled to be fully closed after the months of not posting and not generating any income to keep them running, Reynolds wrote. (Two of the sites stopped uploading new posts in August and September, respectively.) But now Im getting contacted about them, and I just dont have time for anything else, so I will have their closings sped up.

Reynoldss sites represent a brand of misinformation fueled by the ease and profitability of building an audience on social media, according to Joan Donovan, a researcher of disinformation at Harvard University.

Social media companies have incentivized disinformation by rewarding it with financial dollars, Donovan explained. The fact that he was targeting Latinos with Spanish-language disinformation or misinformation from either side of the aisle shows a kind of willingness to create chaos so long as it makes money.

Its not as if the content was simply a translated version of English-language misinformation, either. It clearly targeted the Latino community, playing into existing fears such as worries about socialism, given its history in authoritarian Central and South American governments.

Some of the key narratives are around the perceived threat of socialism coming into the United States, and connecting that to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, said Jacobo Licona, a disinformation researcher for Equis Labs, a Latinx voter research group. Another one we often see is trying to discredit Black Lives Matter and paint them as violent. Since the murder of George Floyd, weve seen an increased effort by these bad actors in Latinx spaces to fuel racial tension in Black and brown communities.

Politica Veraz regularly posted stories that played into these threads, like one that called the Obamas Marxists or another that inaccurately reported two Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department deputies shot in Compton were ambushed by Black Lives Matter.

This misinformation is being seeded in the midst of an election where Latino voters represent a powerful voting bloc. While Trump is trailing Biden among Latino voters in national polls, the margin is narrower in the key battleground state Florida. In a Univision poll released on Sept. 28, 52 percent of Latino voters nationally said they planned to cast a ballot for Biden, compared to 19 percent who were committed to Trump. But in Florida, 36 percent of Latino voters said they favored Trump.

Reynolds said his content was not effective and that the sites were not profitable or popular, and that he had been planning to shut them down before he was contacted by FiveThirtyEight. But data tells a different story. Combined, the three sites Facebook pages had nearly 1 million likes and followers, and Politica Veraz alone attracted more than 500,000 interactions on its Facebook posts since July, according to data from Crowdtangle.

The allure of sensational, emotionally provocative misinformation is well documented. But this content was also able to appeal to an audience facing a dearth of targeted media, according to Randy Pestana, the assistant director of research at Florida International Universitys Institute for Public Policy.

The media outlets that appeal to Hispanics are limited. There are not a lot of them out there, and the ones that are out there more recently have been called fake news, Pestana said. Theres this movement where everything is fake news if it doesnt align with your opinion.

He also noted that many Latino Americans consume news through social media, including Facebook and WhatsApp, making it easier for this kind of content to spread. The share of Latino Americans who get their news from the internet is higher than that of the U.S. population overall, according to surveys from the Pew Research Center. In a 2016 survey, Pew found that 74 percent of Latino respondents got their news online on a typical weekday, whereas a 2017 Pew survey found that 43 percent of the total population often got their news online. And while social media platforms have been cracking down on English-language misinformation to a certain degree, Spanish-language disinformation doesnt always receive the same treatment, Pestana said.

Reynoldss sites are now shut down, but there are plenty of other misinformation sources targeting Latino Americans. As we head into the final weeks of an election, many members of one of the most influential voting blocs continue to be bombarded with false information.

The worst examples of the potential consequences of this is what we saw in 2016: People felt so disenfranchised by the political process that they opted not to participate in it, said Steven Renderos, the executive director of MediaJustice, a nonprofit that focuses on racial inequality in communications. Thats the risk were facing here today, that people will just opt out of engaging.

‘I’m a big deal in my living room’: Jane Gazzo talks radio, TV and the future of music – Sydney Morning Herald

Jane Gazzo, presenter of The Sound, has been hosting the ABC show from her home.

What were the highlights for you of the first season?

Interviewing Kylie from London over Zoom to talk about her new album, that was really special. And some of the co-hosts we had, like Russell Crowe, and Bryan Brown in the first episode and it turned out he knew Lime Cordiale really well, he'd watched them grow up. But then there were some of the performances you won't forget in a hurry. I'm talking about Tones and I singing Never Seen The Rain and it literally does rain that was never in the script, it just started raining in the last take we did for her. Bliss n Eso performing live on Centrepoint Tower: that was just crazy. Amy Shark in the Bennelong restaurant at Sydney Opera House; she had this Australian choir behind her and it just looked beautiful. They're some of the things that spring to mind.

You've been in the business a while now do you ever still get starstruck by the people you get to meet?

I'm not sure if it's "starstruck", but I do get a certain nervousness before a big interview. Certainly with Kylie I was really nervous and I didn't want to stuff that one up. Luckily I didn't ... but yeah, those thoughts go through my head along the lines of, "Will they like me? Will they warm to me? What's the first question I need to ask here?" I always think of those things.

How do you deal with people who might be starstruck talking to you?

Oh, I don't think they're starstruck when they talk to me.

Well I'll have to disagree with you there. Youre a big deal.

Yes, I'm a big deal in my living room. My kids think I'm a big deal.

It is the year 2020: at this point in history, is music still good?

Music's better. We're not confined to our garages anymore. It's not just about kids playing in their garages and forming bands with their mates anymore, it's about the kid who's a loner in his bedroom working on sounds, uploading them to YouTube or Spotify or Bandcamp. It's the making of the bedroom DJ and the bedroom musician. It's been a decade of collaboration, too, where once collaborations were not that common, now you look at the charts and it's such-and-such featuring with such-and-such. Collaborations have come to the fore and a lot of artists talk about collaborating very early on in their careers now where once they would probably hone their craft a little bit more, back in the day.

So it's a more open field.

I think there are so many more avenues and so many more ways now to get your music heard. Is that a good or a bad thing? It's neither, it just is. A lot of artists talk about the frustration of trying to get heard, but I think it's still about the song. It's always been about the song. As long as there's a good song, I think it will get heard amongst all the avenues there are.

As I get older, I find it harder to stay aware of what's current in music. Is that a challenge for you?

Not so much a challenge, only because I have young kids, and also I lecture at the Australian College of the Arts I teach music industry, and every week I ask my students what they're listening to and they keep me across a lot of stuff. I still listen to radio, that's still my first port of call; that's something that's ingrained in me. I started out listening to community radio, that's how I discovered bands, and I still go to radio. I'm still grateful we have community radio in Melbourne, PBS is probably my go-to. And with The Sound as well, I'm inundated with new music.

How important is a show like The Sound to the Australian music industry?

I don't think we can underestimate how important it is to have an Australian music television show on free-to-air. We haven't had that before The Sound for a long, long time. When we look back on 2020, historically and musically, how will we know what's happening? I think what The Sound has achieved is it's not only highlighting our emerging talent and established talent, it's documenting this period. I think that's really important, because as a music lover I go back to Recovery and Countdown and Sounds and Video Hits, and it's always wonderful to look at those YouTube clips and see what we were listening to back then. I think it's been really important to document 2020, because it's been such an unusual and challenging year for our arts and music industry. But also, for many of those artists it was their first time ever on television, so these are really special moments not only for the artists but also for the viewers who get to meet these artists.

A man convicted of using WhatsApp to share explicit child exploitation files says he was so high on ice he didnt even remember downloading them in the first place.

Logan car detailer Jarrod Andrew Swanson, 38, hung his head in the dock and buried his face in his hands throughout Wednesdays proceedings as details of the explicit files concealed on two phones were read out in court.

He became emotional as he told the court of his drug addiction, saying he couldnt even remember accessing the images.

I didnt even know I was doing this s***, Swanson cried.

I dont remember where or how I got it but obviously its been found in my possession.

Swanson represented himself as he entered pleas of guilty at Brisbane District Court on Wednesday to possessing child exploitation material and two counts of using a carriage service to transmit child pornography material.

The court was told federal police officers swooped on his Browns Plains home on June 6 last year over allegations he had been uploading child pornography.

Two Samsung phones, both containing child exploitation files, were seized during the execution of the search warrant.

Crown prosecutor Sam Hill said the second phone had a setting activated that did not display some secured folders, requiring a code to unlock them.

The court was told Swanson used WhatsApp to distribute several child pornography videos on two occasions in May.

When he was arrested by police, Swanson was offered an interview but it did not take place as he was under the influence of drugs at the time.

Judge Ken Barlow sentenced Swanson to 12 months jail for the carriage services charges but ordered he be released immediately if he entered a recognisance of $1000 and be of good behaviour for two years.

He handed down another 12 month sentence for the possession charge but suspended it for two years.

Judge Barlow took into account Swansons attempts at rehabilitation and gave him the benefit of the doubt on his claims about drug use.

Ive never denied not having this stuff on my phone, Swanson told the court.

I dont go looking for kiddie porn that doesnt do anything for me.

I just want to be there for my family, I didnt want any of this s*** to happen, I didnt go looking for it.

Q: First FSE WordPress Theme Now Live – WP Tavern

Themes Team representative Ari Stathopoulos is now officially the first theme author to have a theme in the directory that supports full-site editing (FSE). With a slimmed-down beta release of FSE shipping in WordPress 5.6 this December, someone had to be the first to take the plunge. It made sense for someone intimately familiar with theme development and the directory guidelines to step up.

In many ways, it is a huge responsibility that Stathopoulos has taken on. Until one of the default Twenty* themes handles FSE, the Q theme will likely be one of the primary examples that other theme authors will follow as they begin learning how to build block-based themes.

Earlier this month, I used Q to test FSE and determine how much it had advanced. It is at least months away from being ready for use in production. The beta release in 5.6 is more or less just to get more people testing.

Stathopoulos has no plans to make Q much more than a bare-bones starter or experimental theme. It is almost a playground to see what is possible.

Q was born out of necessity, he said. I couldnt work on full-site editing or global styles without having a base theme for them, so for a while, I had it in a GitHub repository. I decided to release it to the WordPress.org repository because I think I might not be the only one with those issues. Downloading a theme in the dashboard is easier than cloning a repository for most people.

Existing block-based themes are few and far between. Automattic and some of its employees have some experimental projects, but none of those are in the official directory for anyone to test. Stathopoulos wanted a base theme that was unopinionated in terms of design that would allow him to work on FSE, test pull requests, and experiment with various ideas.

It has some ideas for things that ultimately Id like to see implemented in FSE, and its a playground, he said. For example, the addition of a skip-link for accessibility in the theme, an implementation for responsive/adaptive typography, and conditional loading of block styles only when they are used/needed. These are things that I hope will be part of WordPress Core at some point, and the Q theme explores ideas on how to implement them.

He began work on the theme over a year ago and continues working on it as a side project. He said Yoast, his employer, fully supports the idea of creating things that are beneficial for other theme designers and WordPress core.

End-users must install the Gutenberg plugin and activate the experimental FSE feature to use the theme or any similar theme. Currently, FSE is missing many key features that make it viable for most real-world projects. However, theme developers who plan to work with WordPress over the next several years will need to begin testing and experimenting. Q makes for a good starting point to simply get a feel for what themes will look like.

The biggest issue was and still is keeping up with Gutenberg development, said Stathopoulos. Many things are currently fluid, and they happen at a very high pace. The reason I created the theme was because other themes I was testing, as part of my contribution to the Themes Team, were not properly maintained or updated. I wanted to create a starter theme that can be used as a starting point for others as well.

One of the biggest questions still hanging in the air is what the timeline will look like for publicly-available, block-based themes. Will 2021 be the year they take over? That is unlikely given the features current state. However, there will be a point where developers are no longer building classic or traditional themes.

I think were going to see a lot more FSE themes in 2021, said Stathopoulos. It might take a couple of years before they become the standard, but after the release of WordPress 5.6, I hope there will be a lot more development and focus on FSE and global styles. Whether we see more FSE themes or not depends on when some things get merged in WordPress core.

He pointed out some critical missing features from Gutenberg at the moment. The big one is that the Query block, which is the block that displays posts on the front end, does not inherit its options from the global query. Essentially, this means that, regardless of what URL a visitor is on, it displays the latest posts.

Once these things are addressed, and blockers for theme builders get resolved, I expect well see an explosion of good FSE themes being built, he said.

Stathopoulos is most excited about the prospect of seeing more design standards come to core. Currently, there is no consistency between themes. Theme authors can use any markup they want. Switching themes affects a sites structure, SEO, accessibility, speed, and many other things.

My advice to theme developers who want to start tinkering would be to start with something simple, he said. Its tempting to add extremely opinionated styles, for buttons for example, but more and more things get added every day to the editor like a border-radius setting for buttons. Theme authors should avoid the trap of designing an FSE theme having in mind what the editor currently does. Instead, theme authors should strive to build something having in mind a vision of what the editor will eventually become.

Because Stathopoulos is a representative of the Themes Team, he also has some insight into the shift in the coming years for guidelines and what steps authors might need to take. While it is too early for the team to begin making decisions, its members are already thinking about forthcoming changes.

Change is always difficult, especially when its for something this big, said Stathopoulos. It will be a bumpy ride, and it will take time. WordPress theming is a huge industry. For a while, classic (for lack of a better word) themes will continue to be a viable solution for theme developers who didnt have time to catch up. But not forever.

Some may look back at previous major shifts and worry about what the future theme directory guidelines may ask. In 2015, the team required all theme options to use the customizer. This was after a three-year wait for theme authors to organically make the switch. Given that FSE will be a much larger departure from norms and dislike of the Gutenberg project from segments of the development community, it could be a rough transition.

At some point, FSE themes will become the industry standard and what the users want, said Stathopoulos. Personally, I hope no one will want to upload a classic theme in the w.org repository in 2025 when the industry has moved on. It would be like uploading today a theme that is using tables and iframes for layouts.

He said that sufficient time would be given for the eventual transition. However, the team will likely prioritize FSE-based themes. They are cognizant of how much of a shift this will be and will plan accordingly when the time comes.

After the video went viral on October 22, netizens have been demanding Ajaz Khans immediate arrest. #ArrestAjazKhan is trending on the microblogging site, Twitter.

Earlier this year in April, Ajaz Khan was arrested for allegedly uploading an objectionable Facebook post. Khan was also arrested in July 2018 for posting objectionable videos that could have allegedly caused enmity among communities, police said at the time. Before that, he was held for allegedly possessing banned drugs in October 2018, police said, according to media reports.

New consumers driven to the RVing lifestyle fuel solid growth for Winnebago – Minneapolis Star Tribune

A surge in outdoor activities because of the coronavirus pandemic fueled new interest in recreational vehicles, helping Winnebago Industries post solid results for its fourth quarter and fiscal year.

The maker of motor homes, towable RVs and travel trailers reported Wednesday that fourth quarter revenue increased 39% to $739 million.

Winnebago based in Forest City, Iowa, but with its management offices in Eden Prairie said some of that increase is tied to the acquisition of luxury motor home maker Newmar Corp. last November.

Absent the acquisition, though, the companys revenue still increased 15% in the quarter, with the strongest performance in the towable RV segment.

In the face of the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our strong fourth quarter finish to the year was a testament to the incredible resolve of our world-class team, the strength of our portfolio of leading outdoor lifestyle brands, and our efficiency in quickly and safely resuming operations to meet tremendous consumer demand, said Winnebago Chief Executive Michael Happe in a news release.

The pandemic fueled a resurgent interest in outdoor pursuits and products from bicycles to motor homes. The RV Industry Association recently projected that total RV shipments across the industry for 2020 would be 424,400 units, a 4.5% growth in units over 2019, despite an industrywide shutdown of almost two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The industry group sees see the sales trends continuing into next year, projecting a record 507,200 units sold in 2021, a 19.5% increase over the projected 2020 total.

This new forecast confirms what we have been seeing across the country as people turn to RVs as a way to have the freedom to travel and experience an active outdoor lifestyle while also controlling their environment, said RV Industry Association President Craig Kirby in a news release.

Airline travel and hotel stays are down due to the pandemic, as companies curtailed discretionary travel and others curtailed recreation travel. However, some families have turned to RVing as an alternative to maintain social distance and other recommendations to stem the spread of the virus.

Our consumers combined the imperative of the safety of their families with their strong desire to be immersed in the experiences they could control, and consequently flocked to the outdoor recreation lifestyle like never before, Happe told analysts on the company earnings call Wednesday.

Winnebago earned $42.5 million, or $1.25 per share, in the fourth quarter, an increase over the $31.9 million, or $1.01 per share, earned in the same quarter last year.

Adjusted EPS for the fourth quarter was $1.45 per share, a 45% increase over the year-ago quarter, and more than 50% better than the 93 cents per share analysts were expecting.

For the full fiscal year, Winnebago had total revenue of $2.4 billion, including $388.4 million in revenue from the Newmar acquisition. The company earned $61.4 million, or $1.84 per share, compared to $111.8 million, or $3.52 per share in fiscal 2019.

Adjusted EPS for fiscal 2020 was $2.58 per share down from the $3.45 in fiscal 2019. The adjusted EPS excludes financing and acquisition related costs.

Winnebago in November 2019 acquired Newmar for $270 million in cash plus 2 million shares of Winnebago stock, to boost its share of the motor home market. Revenue for the motor home segment was $302 million in the fourth quarter, a 50% increase over the fourth quarter last year fueled by the contribution of $126 million in revenue from Newmar during the quarter.

The towables segment, which represents 56% of overall fourth quarter revenue, saw its revenue increase 35% during the quarter to $414 million. The company said backlog for orders in the towables segment increased to a record $748 million, as dealers saw sizable inventory reductions in order to meet surging consumer demand in the fourth quarter.

Winnebago hasnt provided earnings guidance for 2021, but Happe also expressed confidence that the renewed interest in all things outdoors will continue into 2021.

As we look ahead to fiscal 2021, we are encouraged by the ongoing outdoor recreation demand trends we are experiencing, Happe said in the news release. We have built a strong and growing position in the RV market, and our customers continue to view all our brands as a trusted and safe way to have extraordinary experiences as they travel, live, work and play in the outdoors.

Shares of Winnebago closed at $50.39 per share, down 11.7% Wednesday, as Happe mentioned on the earnings call that there are supply chain concerns in the RV and marine markets but that sourcing teams are addressing them. Shares have traded between $16.94 and $72.65 per share over the last 52 weeks.

The criteria includes tax policy, overall state spending levels, handling of COVID-19 funds, union regulations, health and welfare spending, school choice, and other education policies.
