Eriksmoen: North Dakotan loved to compete in sports and politics – The Dickinson Press

Tom Kleppe served as mayor of Bismarck, was elected to Congress on three occasions, managed the U.S. Small Business Administration and served as U.S. Secretary of Interior. Kleppe was also president of Gold Seal, a company founded by Harold Schafer.

Thomas Savig Kleppe was born July 1, 1919, in Kintyre, located in south-central North Dakota, to Lars and Hannah (Savig) Kleppe. Lars, who was born in Norway, managed the Farmers Company Elevator, traded horses, and had an implement business on the side. Tom attended elementary school in Kintyre, but because the town did not have a high school, he attended high school in Valley City, 120 miles away. During the summers, Tom worked for his father.

He graduated in 1936 and then attended Valley City Teachers College (VCTC), now Valley City State University. According to the college yearbook, the only sport that Tom Kleppe participated in at college was boxing.

Kleppe left VCTC after one year to take a job as bookkeeper for the Stock Growers Bank in Napoleon, and because management saw his potential, he was sent to the Dakota National Bank in Bismarck to learn the banking business as an assistant cashier. Kleppe then returned to the Napoleon bank as managing officer at the age of 21.

RELATED COLUMNS:

After the U.S. entered World War II, Kleppe enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving as a warrant officer in the finance division. While he was stationed at Buckley Field, near Denver, Colo., he joined the military post baseball team, the Buckley Field Falcons. There were a couple of former major league ball players on the team, and many of his other teammates had played minor league baseball.

Despite the fact that Kleppe had no professional baseball experience, he was named the starting shortstop by his manager, Burgess Whitehead, who had been an all-star second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants. When Kleppe was about to be discharged in 1945, he was approached by scouts from the Cardinals urging him to sign a baseball contract with them, which he turned down.

Kleppe later told newspaper reporters, I only weighed 145 pounds, wringing wet, and I figured that wasnt enough to make the major leagues, and I wouldnt settle for anything less.

After Kleppes discharge, he returned to North Dakota and learned that his parents' friend, Harold Schafer, was willing to give him a job. In 1942, Schafer, a salesman in Bismarck, had begun repackaging a 3M, commercial-grade floor wax that he sold under the name of Gold Seal, and he was having success in marketing it. According to Schafer, Lars Kleppe had a good friend who had helped Schafer in the early stages of his business. Schafer then made a promise to Lars, When and if I have money, I am going to have Tom (Kleppe) count it for me.

True to his word, Schafer hired Kleppe to be the bookkeeper for his Gold Seal Co., and a short time later, Schafer promoted Kleppe to treasurer. Then in 1947, Schafer named Kleppe as vice president of his company.

While working at Gold Seal in Bismarck, Kleppe also immersed himself in civic and business matters and, in 1950, decided to run for mayor. He was elected and, at the age of 30, became the youngest mayor of a capital city (in the U.S.), at the time.

In 1954, after serving out his term as mayor, Kleppe returned full time to Gold Seal. He told a newspaper reporter that his main accomplishments while mayor were: ending Bismarcks perennial flood problems; adding a four-lane highway into the city; increasing salaries of city employees (by) 30 percent; installing hundreds of street lights; installing sanitary sewers in the south part of town; and, keeping the municipal debt down to almost nothing.

By this time, Schafer had added a furniture polish, bleach and glass wax, and sales were beginning to skyrocket. With the money that the Gold Seal Co. was making, Schafer began to pursue another interest, which was restoring the town of Medora to the way it looked back in the 1880s. In 1958, Schafer was elected president of the Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park and Badlands Association. "The primary purpose of the association was to produce the outdoor theater production, "Old Four Eyes,'" a musical based on the life of Roosevelt while he was in the Badlands.

Harold Schafer, the man credited with revitalizing Medora and founding the modern "Medora Musical," sits in the Burning Hills Amphitheatre grandstands in this undated photo. Submitted photo by Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation / Special to The Forum

The theater for the show was carved out of the hillside of Burning Gulch and given the name Burning Hills Amphitheatre. Since this project was taking a lot of Schafer's time and attention, he resigned as president of Gold Seal and appointed Kleppe as his replacement.

Kleppe remained president of Gold Seal until 1964, when he decided to run as a Republican against Quentin Burdick, the incumbent U.S. Senator. North Dakota was heavily Republican and Burdick was considered a liberal Democrat. At the time of the June 30 primary, things looked good for Kleppe when he received 67,920 of the votes compared to the 45,099 votes cast for Burdick.

However, North Dakota swung heavily for the Democrats on Election Day, with Lyndon Johnson, the Democratic candidate for U.S. President, receiving 58% of the votes, and the Republican candidate, Barry Goldwater, receiving 42%. Kleppe also received only 42% of the votes, and Burdick was reelected. That year, 1964, was the last time in North Dakota that a Democratic presidential candidate received more votes than the Republican candidate.

Kleppe had his first taste of statewide elective politics, and like many people who were successful competitive sports participants, a single defeat did not make them want to give up. It very often strengthened their resolve and they usually wanted to get back into competitions just as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in politics it usually takes a couple of years before they can do that.

After his defeat, Kleppe took a position as vice president of the J.M. Daln Co., an investment firm in Minneapolis. We will continue our story about Tom Kleppe next week.

Note: There is an addition to last weeks article, in which I mentioned four people from small towns in North Dakota who were top executives of airline companies. Dave Flach contacted me and wrote that I also need to include Larry Martin from Hastings, who was president of Frontier Airlines.

Fresh and Naturally Fermented Birch Juice Market: Technological Advancement & Growth Analysis with Forecast to 2025 - Aerospace Journal

You Can Finally Unlock Genshin Impact’s Magical Seal, And That’s Great News For The Future – TheGamer

The strange magical seal in Mondstadt is now able to be broken, which is great news for the future of Genshin Impact.

If youve been playing Genshin Impact for a while, youll probably be familiar with the mysterious seal adorning a random door in Mondstadts main metropolis. Although it looks like a standard Hydro symbol, lashing it with Barbaras water bullets unfortunately wont accomplish anything, nor will Xingqius rain swords be able to pry it open. This is a seal steeped in mysterious magic thats beyond Genshin Impacts present world state or at least it was, until very recently.

Have you met Mona yet? Shes an excellent character that comes into Genshin Impact at Adventure Rank 38, which is a level precious few players have attained as of yet. Thats not to say nobody has quite a lot of players have already put a huge amount of time and effort into Genshin Impact, and have pretty much maxed out the content that is currently available prior to patch 1.1. However, Genshin is still seeing a massive influx of new players on a daily basis, meaning that the vast majority of people arent quite there yet. If youre one of these people, and are worried about being exposed to light spoilers, you might be better off reading through my experiment in which I did over 1,500 Wishes to test the gacha system, or checking out our speculation as to what the next Genshin Impact banner is going to be after Klee's Sparkling Steps.

But if youre happy to hear about why Genshin Impact has managed to convince me that its going to have a lot of excellent story content for a very long time, then stick around for a while. Some people might worry that Genshin is destined to be a fad, that its going to fade into obscurity the moment next-gen arrives. Im here to tell you that it would be a tragedy if that happened, because Genshin Impact has a blindingly bright future ahead of it, and I am genuinely excited for every little part of it all because of a little magical seal that was recently cracked by a fascinating magician named Mona.

The beginning of this piece refers to the magical seal blocking off a random building in Mondstadt for the majority of the game (as it currently stands at the time of writing). When you finish Monas story quest, shell announce that shes happy to stay in Mondstadt for a bit, and cracking a pesky little seal like that is small potatoes for her. But until this point there was no one in Mondstadt or Liyue capable of accomplishing such a feat. This might not seem like a huge deal at face value and maybe it's not! But in terms of Genshins longevity, its massively refreshing to see.

Related:Here's How To Get 200 Free Primogems In Genshin Impact Today

The fact that it takes Monas narrative arrival to overcome a mysterious and seemingly unconquerable obstacle bodes very well Genshins status as a developing game. Lets consider what Genshin is like right now: it offers us a beautiful open world in which you can do pretty much anything like in Breath of the Wild, almost everything you can possibly come across is either climbable, cookable, or punchable. At the same time, its got that enticing ambiguity boasted by all of the best MMOs. Its like in FFXIV when certain areas are locked off because you havent reached a certain point in the story yet. Theyre not slapped with the traditional DLC stamp of most single-player games theyre given an ambiguous narrative reason for why theyre not accessible right now, despite the fact that Genshin emphatically isnt an MMO that needs to cater to players of all levels at all times. This is great for worldbuilding, especially when also like in an MMO the world is constantly in the process of being built. It's distinct from DLC because DLC usually comes in the form of add-ons that are external to a base game new areas that are detached from the original. Genshin's approach is to expand its world in a more interdependent way, where new areas are inherently attached to previous ones.

If youve done the first few story quests, youll know what I mean. Razor was the first character I unlocked, so I already loved the weird little wolf boy by the time I bumped into him in Wolvendom. But doing his quest line helped me to learn about him what makes him smile, and what makes him tick. I learned about his background, about him being raised by wolves after being left abandoned in the forest. And then once I finished his quest, the Wolf in the North challenge in the until-that-point dilapidated and pointless structure in the middle of Wolvendom opened up, and a previously mysterious part of the map became imbued with significance and purpose. The same can be said of Stormterrors Domain, unlocked as part of Ventis story quest, while Xianglings missions teach us all about Liyue before were even a high enough level to go there.

Unlocking new content in games is hardly new. Meeting additional characters as you progress through a story is a given, in most cases. But in terms of untraversable areas Well, Genshin Impacts approach to this is unique, and actually mirrors a successful Early Access approach or an MMO more so than a full-fledged single-player RPG. Instead of just locking areas off with level-gating, Genshin has committed to launching several new regions over the next year, all of which will come with their own characters, stories, and elements for the Traveler to attune themselves to.

These regions will spill into the servers gradually over time, but the best thing about this is that they wont discount the areas that are currently available. As proven by Monas magical seal as well as other yet-to-be-unlocked areas like the mysterious salt ruins in Liyue there is still so much to learn about the areas were exploring right now. Im excited for Genshin to be built out as one cohesive, developing world, as opposed to phoning in every existing aspect of itself whenever a new expansion drops. Monas late-game and still unfinished! story quest gives me full faiththat this will be exactly the case when push comes to shove.

Speaking in Runglish the first Space Station dwellers talk about their mission – Houston Chronicle

NASA astronaut William Shepherd floated next to Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko as they looked down at their home planet some 20 years ago.

One of my most interesting moments with Yuri in space was looking at the Earth, Shepherd said during a virtual panel discussion on Thursday. They had both been in the military. He was saying, OK I was a MiG-21 pilot and I was stationed here. And half an orbit later, I would say, OK I was a Navy Seal and we were here and here and here. That was a really interesting dialogue.

On HoustonChronicle.com: What happens when NASA retires the International Space Station?

On Nov. 2, 2000, Shepherd, Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev became the first long-duration crew to live on the International Space Station. They laid the foundation for 20 years of continuous human habitation, international cooperation and technical accomplishments.

Shepherd spoke Russian. Gidzenko and Krikalev spoke English. They communicated with a mixture of languages called Runglish.

And their technical challenges began almost immediately. They were initially unable to open the space stations hatch. They struggled for a little bit before getting inside, turning on the lights, activating the toilet and making hot water to enjoy a warm beverage after two days in a Russian Soyuz capsule eating cold food.

It was very new, very clean, recalled Krikalev, who had previously flown on the Russian space station Mir. He said it wasnt completely empty but certainly didnt look lived in.

When the first cargo vehicle arrived 15 days later, it was supposed to dock autonomously. But the spacecraft started wobbling when it was about 100 meters away. Gidzenko had to use hand controllers to manually bring it in.

I dont think you could say we had an average day, Shepherd said. At least not too many of them. But this was good because we were up there to get a lot of work done, and every day seemed to have its own set of challenges.

And it only took a few orbits of conflicting orders from Houston and Moscow before Shepherd gave both control centers a pointed reminder.

On HoustonChronicle.com: International Space Station: an orbiting home and lab for two decades

Look, were the International Space Station, he recalled saying. You guys have to coordinate.

Theyve worked as a team ever since. On Monday, the International Space Station will mark 20 years of continuous human occupation. It has been home to 241 people from 19 countries.

Polling Locations Open Early In San Diego Election First – KPBS

Above: A polling place is open in the San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego County. Oct. 31, 2020.

In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail-in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.

For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

RELATED: Poll Workers In City Heights Get Ready For In-Person Voting

On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.

More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.

Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.

Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.

There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the locations of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.

Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.

"We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home," Vu said. "Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3."

Assigned polls were included on the registrar's postcard reminder sent to voters last week or voters can look it up at sdvote.com. Voters can also confirm their ballot was received by the registrar's office online at the same site.

The hours at the polls and the Registrar of Voters office will change to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. Voters should prepare for long lines.

A statement from the registrar also reminds San Diegans campaigning or electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place or mail ballot drop-off location is not allowed. This includes the visible display or audible dissemination of information that advocates for or against any candidate or measure on the ballot.

Investing in the Energy Efficiency & Weatherization Workforce – CleanTechnica

October 30th, 2020 by U.S. Department of Energy

By Daniel R Simmons, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Today is Weatherization Day, an annual opportunity to celebrate the impact of the U.S. Department of Energys (DOEs)Weatherization Assistance Program(WAP), which reduces energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes.

Daniel R Simmons, Wisconsin Weatherization Trip 2019 courtesy of DOE.

For the past four decades, WAP has helped lower home energy costs for more than seven million low-income families through efficiency retrofits, and providedtraining and resourcesto states across the country to develop a skilled weatherization workforce.

Last year, I traveled to Wisconsin to witness one of our state weatherization programs in action. Thanks to the efforts of the State of Wisconsins Department of Administration andProject Home, Wisconsins local weatherization agency, I had the pleasure of visiting two homes where I watched how weatherization crews went about their work to make them more energy efficient and safe.

What struck me during my visit was not only the high level of skill required of the professionals, but also the physically challenging nature of their jobs. From crawling into tight attic spaces to remove and replace insulation, to topping ladders to seal and repair ducts, to blowing insulation with large, heavy hoses, the crews navigated the physical and technical challenges of their jobs with relative ease. Their work not only made these homeshealthier and saferfor the families living there, but also saved those families a great deal of money.

Daniel R Simmons, Wisconsin Weatherization Trip 2019 courtesy of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Across the state of Wisconsin, there are 18 local weatherization service providers, serving all 72 counties and 11 Native American Tribes. In just one year, the states weatherization network implemented energy-efficiency upgrades to more than 6,000 homes. Nationally, DOEs Weatherization Assistance Program provides services to approximately 35,000 homes every year weatherizing all types of low-income homes, including single-family detached units, mobile homes, and large multifamily buildings.

At the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, were doing amazing work to make energy affordable and keep our economy strong. On Weatherization Day, Im reminded of that trip to Wisconsin, and how special it was to witness firsthand how our work is making a difference in the lives of American workers and families.

Going green grows jobs and cuts pollution – IOL

By Staff Reporter Oct 27, 2020

Share this article:

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) has generated over R120 million in financial benefits through additional revenue, cost savings and private investments since it was set up in 2013.

This was announced by the City of Cape Towns Strategic Business Partners, GreenCape, which manages the programme.

The WISP offers green technical expertise to businesses to connect them with unused or residual resources including energy, water, assets and logistics.

The achievements of the WISP are very impressive and I am proud of the work done to contribute to a sustainable economy here in Cape Town. This impressive programme contributes to the economy and the efficacy of businesses by assisting in improving business processes as well as adding new revenue streams, which ultimately contribute to the success of businesses and job creation through recycling, said the Citys Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Alderman James Vos.

Apart from the creation of 69 permanent jobs, and 25 temporary jobs in member companies, the programme has ensured that more than 100 000 tons of waste was diverted from landfills, and 300 000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions saved.

The city funds GreenCape to unlock the manufacturing and employment potential in the green economy, and focuses on attracting investment opportunities, as well as removing barriers to entry and expansion in the green economy.

The green economy is seen as a key sector with the potential to add to an already thriving business system that creates jobs.

Just one example is the Sealand Gear company which is a WISP participant and specialises in manufacturing bags and apparel from recycled and upcycled materials, provided by GreenCape.

Sealand now employs 28 people and as a young start-up, the WISP helped Sealand set up supplier relationships, which would have proved difficult without this assistance. said Alderman Vos

The City said it was committed to speeding up progress towards sustainable development and poverty reduction through the sustainable use of natural resources and would continue to partner with stakeholders to enable a greener future.

Nearly Half of San Diego Countys 1.95 Million Voters Have Now Cast Ballots – Times of San Diego

Share This Article:Voters drop off a mail-in ballot at the San Diego Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa. Photo by Chris Stone

In an early-voting surge seen across the country, nearly half of San Diego Countys 1.95 million voters have cast their ballots in the Nov. 3 election, the Registrar of Voters reported Thursday.

Support Times of San Diego's growthwith a small monthly contribution

Thats more than double the number received by this point in 2016.

More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday, according to the registrars office over 48% of the total to be cast. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,700 ballots.

Other parts of the country are seeing similar levels of turnout. In Texas, 51% of registered voters had cast their ballots by Wednesday, with long lines at many polling places. In Florida, 52.5% of ballots were in as of Thursday. In Georgia, it was 48.9%.

More than 80 million Americans have now cast ballots in the presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida. Professor Michael McDonald, who directs the project, is predicting a record election turnout.

McDonald and other voting experts have predicted turnout will easily surpass the 138 million who voted in the 2016 presidential election. Only 47 million votes came before Election Day in 2016.

California and many other states, including Texas and Florida, can count ballots before election day, leading to earlier results.

Ballots received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office this week should be processed in time for the first release of election night results to be posted shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said. Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.

All San Diego County voters received official ballots by mail earlier this month and have a number of voting options:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the registrars office encourages older adults and people with underlying medical conditions to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting early.

Heidi Klum’s Daughter Leni Doesn’t Show Her Face on Instagram What to Know about Her 4 Kids – AmoMama

Supermodel Heidi Klum's oldest daughter Leni is now 16 and has just got her driver's license, but she is camera shy and won't show her pretty face on Instagram.

A new generation of celebrity children is growing up, and stunning Heidi Klum's oldest daughter, bornHelene Boshoven Samuel, better known as Leni, is one of them.

Many of the new celebrities are all too happy to revel in the attention, but Leni, as it turns out, is not eager to be a public figure, and though she has an Instagram account, she never shows her face.

SWEET SIXTEEN

Everything we know about Leni is glimpsed through whatever her mother lets slip on her social media, and recently it came out that the 16-year-old has her driver's license.

Klum shared a selfie on Instagram stories in which she is sitting next to her daughter, who is at the wheel of a car. The former model announced that Leni can now drive.

MAJOR MILESTONE

For any teen, getting that driver's license is a major milestone, and Klum was justly proud, but she did make a point of keeping her daughter's face out of focus in her selfie.

Nevertheless, it is easy to see that Leni is tall, blond, and lovely, just like her mom, and from her baby pictures, we know she has enormous, beautiful blue eyes.

Funnily enough, it seems that the camera-shy Leni is the only one of Klum's four children interested in modeling, fashion, and showbusiness and wants to follow in her footsteps. Klum said:

The only one so far who wants to step in my footsteps is my oldest daughter, Leni.

A BIG FAMILY

Klum has four children: Leni from a relationship with Italian businessmanFlavio Briatore; sonsHenry, 15, andJohan, 13, as well as daughterLou from her marriage to British singer Seal.

Klum's relationship withBriatore ended shortly after she announced her pregnancy, and that was when she met Seal. Even though Briatore has met Leni, Klum stated that hehas no involvement in her daughter's life and that her father is Seal.

In 2009, the singer adopted Leni, and she now has the same surname as her brothers and sisters. Sadly, Klum's marriage to Seal ended in 2014, but the model has moved on and is now happily remarried toTokio Hotel singer Tom Kaulitz.

Leni's brothers Henry and Johan may be younger, but they are taller than she is and looking very grown-up -- and for that matter, so is her baby sister Lou. Klum stunned fans when she shared a video clip that shows her dancing with her two girls.

Not only is Leni almost as tall as her mom, but so is Lou, who is, after all, only 11 years old. Klum and Seal share custody of the four children, but the process has been far from painless.

In a recent clash, the singer had not wanted to allow Klum to take the four children with her to Germany to film a segment of "Germany's Next Topmodel" out of fear they might be exposed to COVID-19.

Leni pleaded her case to the court, explaining that since she and her siblings spent most of their time with their mother, it would be traumatic for them to spend months away from Klum. Klum stated:

"I am well aware of all of the necessary precautions associated with the COVID-19 virus, and would never put our children at risk I have taken all the precautions for Germany the same way I do in the United States."

Seal relented, and the children have traveled to Germany with their mother and will be back in Los Angeles in December. The four Samuel kids will then, as per their agreement, spend extra time with Seal.

Growing up with famous parents isn't easy, but Seal and Klum have protected their children from the scrutiny of the press and given them space to grow up as normal teens.

Why scary movies are helping some people cope with the pandemic – UChicago News

One of his favorite projects involves a cabinet of curiosities that he curated with items from online vendors on Etsy and from Woolly Mammoth, an eclectic store in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. The study examined participants morbid curiosity about strange objects at three levels: by looking at them (visual), by touching them (tactile) and by reading about them (epistemic).

Scrivner stocked the cabinet with both morbid and non-morbid items for which he had written interesting histories, including a psych report for serial killer Ed Gein, an old copy of Chaucers works, a cursed exorcism medallion, a seal and wax used in Game of Thrones and morticians tools.

Participants viewed the cabinet while wearing eye-tracking glasses. First, they inspected for 90 seconds without instructions, as if they were visiting a museum. Then, while wearing gloves, they were allowed to pick up and examine five items of their choice. Finally, they were asked if they wanted to read the stories behind another five items.

The idea is to tease apart whether morbidly curious people are really more epistemically curioustheyre not interested in doing violent things, right? said Scrivner, who has paused data collection on the project due to the pandemic. So maybe they will be interested in looking at or reading about something scary, but will only want to touch things that arent.

Scrivner also has a study coming out in Psychological Science this fall about another seasonally appropriate topic: haunted houses.

In 2017, when data for the forthcoming paper were collected, Scrivner began a collaboration with Mathias Clasen, a researcher at Aarhus University in Denmark with similar interests. With colleagues Marc Andersen and Uffe Schjoedt, they studied visitor responses to scary stimuli at a local haunted tourist attraction.

To do so, they triangulated three different kinds of data: physiological data from heart rate monitors, self-reported levels of fear and fun for visitors after they exited the haunted house and behavioral expressions of fear by coding videos of their reactions to frightening events.

We showed that theres an optimum level of fear, essentially a sweet spot, Scrivner said. The basic idea is that people regulate how immersed they are in the haunted house and how much emotional arousal they are willing to experience in order to maximize their level of fun.

With Halloween around the corner, Scrivner is getting ready to celebrate himself.

I usually like to catch a haunted house or two during October and binge a few horror movies that Ive been wanting to watch, he said. And, of course, curate my spooky Spotify playlist.

His own favorite horror movies include Hereditary and other films by Ari Aster. He also likes the work of directors Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Purge), Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and James Wan (Saw and The Conjuring Universe).

But if youre not a horror fan, 2020 may be scary enough, according to Scrivner. Not everyone is equally morbidly curious, and for some people, the visceral feelings that such films can present outweigh their entertainment value.

People tend to know themselves well enough to decide whether or not it would be a good idea to try watching something scary, he said.

Seaplane to be used for flights between Sabarmati riverfront, Statue of Unity reaches Kochi – Financial Express

The aircraft, which landed safely in Venduruthy channel for a transit halt, is scheduled to reach Ahmedabad, where the country's maiden seaplane service will be launched between the Sabarmati riverfront and the Statue of Unity in Narmada district.

A 19-seater seaplane which will be used for flights between the Sabarmati riverfront and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patels Statue of Unity in Gujarat as part of a first-of-its-kind service in the country arrived here from Maldives on Sunday.

The aircraft, which landed safely in Venduruthy channel for a transit halt, is scheduled to reach Ahmedabad, where the countrys maiden seaplane service will be launched between the Sabarmati riverfront and the Statue of Unity in Narmada district.

The service is likely to be launched on October 31 if all goes as per plans, Union Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya had told PTI.

The Twin Otter 300 seaplane leased by Spicejet will be able to accommodate 12 passengers.

The seaplane was provided assistance with berthing facility at Naval jetty and refuelling for its onward journey, a defence spokesperson said.

Seaplanes are a natural choice of connectivity between mainland and Lakshadweep islands. Inland water channels in Kochi and sheltered lagoons in islands offer an ideal space for the seaplanes to land and take-off, he said.

Representatives of Spicejet, Indian Navy, Cochin International Airport Limited and district administration were present to supervise the transit halt.

The crew of the seaplane were greeted by Vice Admiral A K Chawla, flag officer commanding-in-chief of Southern Naval Command.

He said the occasion refreshed fond memories of amphibious aircraft operations from Kochi naval base in the yesteryears.

Incidentally, the birth of Indian Naval Aviation was also preceded by a similar landing of sealand aircraft in the Venduruthy channel in Kochi on February 4, 1953.

The Las Vegas Gambling Scene Has Gone Off-Strip. Here’s What Investors Need to Know – Motley Fool

During the COVID-19 pandemic, cities and towns that rely on business and convention traffic have been particularly hard-hit. For example, Las Vegas plays host to some of the biggest conventions across all industries, most of them filling up the large hotels and casinos along the famed Las Vegas Strip. Most of the major events for 2020 have rescheduled, and some of 2021's most anticipated events, including the annual CES conference in January, have switched to a virtual format. All this has been devastating, not just for hotel businesses but for all businesses that serve the millions of tourists who visit each year. But is there hope?

All of these changed plans have had a direct impact on the entire economy of Las Vegas. September data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority indicates visitor volume is down 51%, and the number of people arriving via airplane is down nearly 61%. In September, total hotel occupancy reached 46.8% overall, down 41.5% year over year, while weekend occupancy was at 66.1%

The big casino brands have been feeling the pain. In the third quarter, Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS), owner of the Venetian and the Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip, reported net revenues from its Las Vegas properties fell by 62.6% to $152 million. Revenue per available room (RevPAR) was down 66.1% year over year. Sheldon Adelson, CEO of the company, is said to be exploring a $6 billion deal to sell the Las Vegas properties to focus on the Asian market.

Gaming revenue in Clark County for September tells an interesting story. While Las Vegas Strip revenue was down by 39.1%, gaming revenue for the area was down by only 26.9%, and revenue in the Boulder Strip area was up by 1.8%. Part of the reason for this is that while air travel has slowed dramatically, traffic hasn't fallen nearly as much, and locals are taking advantage of the entertainment options in their own town.

Documentary reveals toll of job losses on and off the Las Vegas Strip: "I cry and pray a whole lot" – CBS News

REVERB is a documentary series fromCBSN Originals. Watch the latest episode, "Losing Las Vegas," in the video player above. It premieres on CBSN Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m., 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. ET.

When the pandemic arrived, the economic shutdown hit Las Vegas harder than any other major city in America and the impact rippled far beyond the famous Strip. Economist Jeremy Aguero described the local job losses as staggering, with the highest unemployment rates ever reported by a state since 1976, when the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking this data.

"During the Great Recession, we lost about 180,000 jobs over three years. [During the pandemic], we lost over 225,000 jobs in three months," Aguero told CBS News.

Las Vegas hotels and casinos reopened their doors in June, at reduced capacity to stay in line with social distancing safety guidelines. But tourism remains down, shows closed, conventions were canceled, and many jobs in the community have not come back.

"People that never struggled before are now struggling. You don't expect to see Mercedes and BMWs in food distribution lines," said Stacey Lockhart, executive director of Hopelink, a nonprofit that provides emergency housing assistance to families and seniors in the Las Vegas area. "This is going to go clear into next year, and though a lot of people are back to work, there's a whole part of the community that doesn't have a job to go back to."

The new CBSN Originals documentary, "Reverb | Losing Las Vegas," tells some of their stories. [Watch the video in the player above.]

After years of baking cookies for friends and her community, Angela Pepe fulfilled a dream and started her own cookie company, Curly Top Baker. In their first month, Angela and her staff were baking up to 20,000 cookies a week to fulfill orders primarily from Las Vegas conventions and specialty stores.

But in mid-March, when COVID-19 hit, non-essential businesses came to a halt, including the large conventions that kept companies like Curly Top Baker running. Overnight, the cookie orders stopped coming in.

Like many small-business owners, Angela had to adapt quickly and shift her business model. Online orders have helped keep her bakery afloat, but she told CBS News, "We've had the scary talk about selling the house and everything we've worked for."

Her business did not qualify for the Paycheck Protection Program, established by the CARES Act. Still, Angela negotiated rent payments with her landlord and is hoping her company will survive. While most small businesses nationwide partially or fully reopened by summer, about 58% of owners said they worried about having to permanently close, according to a July 2020U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey.

Angela's husband, Mark, was furloughed from his hotel marketing job of 15 years, and then his position was eliminated. "It was a punch in the gut," said Angela. He's now putting his energy into marketing for the bakery business.

Angela's bakery remains open with her family's help, but she thinks the government could have done more to support small businesses. "I just wish that a lot of the larger companies that were able to take advantage of the grant money, would have left some for the smaller [companies]."

Heading into the holiday season, Angela is hoping orders of gift boxes will pick up, but admits she's still under tremendous stress.

"There are a lot of nights that I cry and pray a whole lot. It seems so unfair," she said. But she's trying to stay positive for her children. "They'll remember 2020 was crazy. We were going through all kinds of different scenarios with our finances, but we conquered."

Before the pandemic, Tierney Allen, a tribute artist who performs impersonating Lady Gaga on the Las Vegas Strip, was looking forward to her most successful year yet. "I was on Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and every local news station. I thought that 2020 was going to be even bigger. And then it just stopped."

When the Strip closed down, Tierney found herself with no income at all. She promptly applied for unemployment, but it took 17 weeks for the first check to arrive. "Food stamps, Medicaid, unemployment benefits all the government programs that are supposed to be a safety net saved us," shared Tierney.

"I see every day, people losing their homes, having to leave Las Vegas. It's decimated the entertainment community," she said. Though hotels and casinos reopened in June, shows and entertainment venues did not.

And amid the financial hardship and uncertainty, Tierney was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. She is responding well to treatment, but there's still a long road ahead with upcoming surgery followed by radiation.

Tierney's husband, Travis, had a long-running show impersonating Elvis on the Strip. As established performers, they started a live-stream show on a makeshift stage in their home to provide a platform for fellow tribute artists and share in whatever donations trickled in.

Some Las Vegas shows are finally starting to reopen with new safety guidelines in place, but Tierney doesn't anticipate returning to the Strip until 2021. In the meantime, her live-streaming shows have been therapeutic. "It gives me a reason to sing, and music is healing. I'm pushing myself to get ready and share my talent. It's something to live for."

Bradford Cook worked for nine years as a union lead electronics technician at MGM. Furloughed back in March, he hoped to get called back after hotels and casinos reopened. Instead, he got a call in September telling him his position was being terminated.

"I just had to hold it together because I didn't want the kids to see me in a stressful situation. You have to be their strength," he said.

A divorced father of two with shared custody of his kids, he's gotten by on savings and unemployment, but fears his savings will be depleted soon. Thestate's eviction moratorium expired on October 15, but an order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopping evictions brought on by the pandemic remains in effect through December 31.

Finding work is only one hurdle for Bradford and his family. School campuses remained closed in Las Vegas, so his children, ages 6 and 10, need adult supervision and hands-on assistance for remote learning throughout the day, making it challenging to look for new employment.

Bradford is still hoping he'll get called back to his union position at MGM but is currently looking for work elsewhere. To afford to stay in their house, he'd likely need to find two jobs. He believes he's got enough between savings and assistance from loved ones to make it through the end of the year.

"I guess when times are other than ideal, you find a way to make it through."

Las Vegas City Council considers ordinance to ban feeding of wildlife within parks – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) The Las Vegas City Council will consider a new ordinance that prohibits the feeding of any wildlife within city parks.

Community members are concerned that feeding the birds at Floyd Lamb Park, is causing some of the ecosystem and public areas to deteriorate.

Joe Whitaker has been going to Floyd Lamb park with his family for over 40 years.

Whitaker says over the past few years he has seen more and more people feeding the birds. He even observed some dumping large bags of seed throughout the park.

Thats drawn in a lot more birds and waterfowl, Whitaker said. Weve seen a lot of the birds injured, die.

Overfed birds are causing issues at Floyd Lamb Park. Fishermen tell me feces cover benches, birds are being aggressive, & the pond water is becoming very murky

Now a new ordinance is being considered that could ban feeding wildlife in city parks. Full story tonight on @8NewsNow pic.twitter.com/QY9lnUXQ14

Now, he says the park is overrun with geese and ducks, as well as pigeons, which he has never seen there before. Because of this, feces cover the benches and are affecting the fish in the ponds.

The water is become especially murky, Whitaker said. I think a big part of that is because of the feces thats being dumped in the water by the waterfowl.

Whitaker says the City of Las Vegas has been responsive when contacted about the feces and have tried to power wash many areas.

Now, the Las Vegas City Council will consider a new ordinance to ban the feeding of animals within city parks, recreational facilities, and public plazas.

Whitaker hopes the city will step up and continue to make Floyd Lamb Park a nice place for families.

Kids that are out there now that are young like I was when I started here, can enjoy the park and enjoy the fishing for a long time to come, Whitaker said.

This ordinance will be considered at the city council meeting on Wednesday, November 4th at 9 a.m. Public comments can be made in-person, or sent to the city clerk, up to an hour before the meeting.

Las Vegas tea shop operators say man threatened to blow up store – Las Vegas Review-Journal

The operators of a southwest Las Vegas Valley business say a man threatened to blow up their store because of their rainbow LGBTQ flag and a flag supporting presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Beyah Delmuneo, the owner of the Milk+T bubble tea shop, said her girlfriend, Caroline Sadorra, answered the phone Thursday afternoon to a man yelling at her about two flags displayed outside the business.

His voice just sounded angry and hostile, Sadorra, the store manager, said, adding that he began interrogating her.

The man also used a homophobic slur when describing the store, Sadorra said, God bless you and ended the call, but five minutes later he called back, she said.

Im going to blow up your f store, the man said, according to a recording Sadorra took of the phone call.

Delmuneo said long lines to file a police report at a Metropolitan Police Department station prevented her from reporting the call until Saturday morning. When Sadorra called 911 on Thursday afternoon, a dispatcher told her it wasnt an emergency.

The two now hope that police will take the mans threats seriously.

We literally have all the evidence they could possible need, Sadorra said.

Sadorra said the phone call scared her, and her and Delmuneo have been cautiously eyeing every customer who walks up, wondering if its the same man. On Saturday afternoon, employees took orders at a picnic table outside the business, while the front door remained firmly locked.

But many customers who came to the store on Saturday voiced their support for the business after hearing about the mans threat on the news, Delmuneo said.

She also owns tea shops in Portland and Los Angeles, and all of the businesses have a rainbow flag with the Milk+T logo on it. Delmuneo said shes always been very vocal about being a member of the LGBTQ community and sharing her political beliefs the Biden flag came from a campaign event the store hosted last weekend for Rep. Susie Lee.

Although some people have urged the couple to remove the flags out of fear for their safety, Delmuneo and Sadorra both said theyre determined to continue displaying them.

Since the mans call, the two have put up another rainbow flag, this one reading: In this house, we believe science is real, Black Lives Matter, love is love, no human is illegal, womens rights are human rights.

It just doesnt seem right to not stand for something, Delmuneo said.

The two said they strive to make their store inclusive of everyone, including people who dont agree with them. But they also want respect from others, Sadorra said.

Sadorra said she wants the man who called her to face consequences for the threat, but she also thinks he may be going through a hard time.

I just hope that he finds peace, that he doesnt do this anymore, she said.

Federal agencies fall short of Trump forest protection goals – Las Vegas Sun

Published Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020 | 8:48 a.m.

Updated 11 hours, 1 minute ago

Nearly two years ago, President Donald Trump stood amid the smoky ruins of Paradise, California, where he blamed the deadliest wildfire in the state's history on poor forest management.

"You've got to take care of the floors, you know? The floors of the forest, very important," the president said.

He ordered the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Interior to make federal lands less susceptible to catastrophic wildfires with measures such as removing dead trees, underbrush and other potentially flammable materials.

But while Trump has accused California and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of doing a terrible job of forest protection, his own agencies fell short of his goals for federal lands in 2019.

They treated a combined 6,736 square miles (17,446 square kilometers) just over half of the 13,203 square miles (34,196 square kilometers) the president sought, according to government data. It was only slightly better than their average annual performance over nearly two decades.

Without directly addressing the figures, the Forest Service said in a statement Friday to the Associated Press that prospects are very good for stepping up forest treatments in the next several years, assuming Congress provides more funding and state and private landowners play bigger roles. The agency has formed stewardship agreements with 19 states and will rely on partnerships with state governments to get this work done, it said.

The numbers show it will take more than executive orders to make significant progress on a problem that has been building for a century, scientists and advocates say. More money and personnel are needed, along with policy changes.

The fires are getting bigger, the fire seasons are longer and costs are significantly increasing, said Dylan Kruse, director of government affairs for Sustainable Northwest, a Portland, Oregon-based nonprofit that seeks collaboration between forest industries and conservationists. We need billions of dollars and we're not even close.

Trump and Congress have provided only modest spending increases for forest treatments in recent years, he said. The president sought a nearly $50 million cut in 2018, which lawmakers rejected. His 2021 budget recommends $510 million, up from $445 million allocated this year.

Trump has drawn ridicule from political foes and some scientists for arguing that western forest floors should be raked" and ignoring the role of climate change-induced warming and drought in the West's worsening wildfire crisis.

But protection measures like those sought in his 2018 executive order have drawn support from administrations of both parties for two decades.

A national fire plan developed under President Bill Clinton and continued under President George W. Bush called for hazardous fuel reduction and suppressing invasive beetles, along with restoration of burned-over lands to prevent erosion. The Obama administration released a fire management strategy that embraced fuel removal and controlled burns.

The amount of land receiving such treatments from the Forest Service and Department of Interior has edged upward, peaking at 10,469 square miles (27,115 square kilometers) in 2009 before declining to almost half that for several years. It jumped to 8,505 square miles (22,027 square kilometers) in 2016 President Barack Obama's last year in office.

Under Trump, the treated area has gone from 6,367 square miles (16,490 square kilometers) in 2017 to nearly 7,336 square miles (19,000 square kilometers) in 2018. Last year it was up to 6,736 square miles (17,446 square kilometers).

Still, the Forest Service says 125,000 square miles (323,748 square kilometers) it manages need work such as tree thinning and regulated burns to reduce fuel loads. The agency estimates many times more that much government and private land is vulnerable to severe wildfire.

The Department of Interior, which includes the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, did not respond to written questions from AP.

These agencies are still lagging far behind on these projects, said Susan Jane Brown, an attorney with the Western Environmental Law Center.

Federal officials acknowledge their longstanding policy of putting out fires as quickly as possible, instead of letting some take their natural course, made forests overgrown and less able to cope with drought and disease.

A Forest Service study this month found that about one-third of trees in areas where excessive vegetation had not been removed died between 2014 and 2018. In thinned out places, the tree mortality rate was 11%.

Some treated areas had been subjected to prescribed burns fires intentionally set and carefully monitored.

In its statement, the agency said it now uses prescribed fire on about 2,187 square miles (5,664 square kilometers) of national forest land each year and plans to do more. But it said the practice has its challenges, including smoke pollution in nearby communities and a minor risk of losing control.

Those burns along with other fuel reduction measures also are costly, requiring gear, materials and skilled personnel. Yet the Forest Service has fewer staffers to devote to them, while hiring thousands more people to extinguish fires that have grown bigger and more numerous.

The service lost 7,000 non-firefighter positions between 1998 and 2015. The share of its budget devoted to firefighting has shot up from 16% in the mid-1990s to more than 50% today and is expected to keep rising as the agency buys more helicopters, fire engines and other equipment.

Shifting resources from forest treatment to firefighting doesn't bode well for long-term prevention, said John Bailey, an Oregon State University forestry professor who worked with federal officials on a fire management strategy released in 2014. It emphasized fuel reduction efforts, from clearing forest debris to rangeland grazing.

We're on a trajectory where fire seasons are going to get longer and drier and resources stretched thinner, he said. We're just not making the progress we need to.
