Russia space agency to continue growing its tourism mission

AJapanese billionaire returned to Earth, after 12 days spent on the International Space Station where he made videos about performing mundane tasks in space including brushing teeth and going to the bathroom.

Online fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa and his assistant Yozo Hirano parachuted onto Kazakhstans steppe at around the expected landing time of 0313 GMT (December 20), along with Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin.

Footage from the landing site, around 150 kilometres (90 miles) southeast of the central Kazakhstan town of Zhezkazgan, showed the trio smiling after being helped out of the Soyuz descent module and into evacuation vehicles in freezing, foggy conditions.

The crew is feeling good, a commentator on NASA TV said, translating comments from Russian mission control.

Russias defence ministry had said day earlier that Maezawa and Hirano were set to be surprised by recovery crews with a traditionalJapanese noodle dish.

Their journey marked Russias return to space tourism after a decade-long pause that saw the rise of competition from the United States.

The trio spent 12 days on the orbiting laboratory where theJapanese tourists documented their daily life aboard the ISS for Maezawas popular YouTube channel.

Addressing his one million followers on YouTube, the 46-year-old billionaire explained how to brush teeth and go to the bathroom in space.

In one of the videos, he explained in detail the business of relieving oneself on the ISS.

Peeing is very easy, he said as he demonstrated a handheld funnel astronauts use to suck their urine away.

In other videos, he showed his followers how to properly drink tea and sleep in zero gravity.

When the three space travellers arrived on the ISS on December 8, they joined a seven-team crew who were engaged in space biology and physics research.

Maezawa plans to take eight people with him on a 2023 mission around the moon, operated by Elon Musks SpaceX.

He and his assistant are the first privateJapanese citizens to visit space since journalist Toyohiro Akiyama travelled to the Mir station in 1990.

Turning point

Their return from space caps a banner year that many have seen as a turning point for private space travel.

Billionaires Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson all made breakthrough commercial tourism flights this year, bursting into a market Russia is keen to defend.

Russia has a history of sending self-funded tourists to space.

In partnership with US-based company Space Adventures, Russian space agency Roscosmos has previously taken seven tourists to the ISS since 2001, one of them twice.

The last was Canadas Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberte in 2009, who was dubbed the first clown in space.

In October, Russia launched its first untrained cosmonauts into space since Lalibertes trip, delivering a Russian actress and a director to the ISS, where they filmed scenes for the first movie in orbit.

Moscow had stopped sending tourists to space after NASA retired its Space Shuttle in 2011, which left Russia with a monopoly on supplying the ISS.

NASA bought up all Soyuz launch seats for a reported $90 million (80 million euros) per spot, effectively ending tourist flights.

That changed last year when a SpaceX spacecraft successfully delivered its first astronauts to the ISS.

NASA began purchasing flights from SpaceX, stripping Russia of its monopoly and costing its cash-strapped space agency millions of dollars in revenue.

While the cost of tickets to space for tourists has not been disclosed, Space Adventures has indicated they are in the range of $50-60 million.

Roscosmos plans to continue growing its space tourism business, already commissioning two Soyuz rockets for such trips.

Automation Anywhere Acquires FortressIQ Amid Potential IPO Journey – ChannelE2E

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) software company Automation Anywhere has acquired FortressIQ, a process discovery, software mining and analytics company that had been backed by Microsofts venture capital fund. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisitions surfaces as Automation Anywhere gears up for a potential IPO(initial public offering).

So what does Automation Anywhere potentially gain in this deal? FortressIQs artificial intelligence software allows businesses to rapidly document their business processes. From there, partners and customers can pinpoint business operations that are ideal targets for automation. Automation Anywheres software, enhanced by the FortressIQ acquisition, will provide fast, accurate visibility on which processes can and should be automated.

FortressIQ has 61 employees listed on LinkedIn. The Philippine smart home market, according to Statista, is expected to generate $169 million in revenue this year, with a household penetration of 7.5%. By 2026, it is expected to rise to 16.6%.

Converge announced on Tuesday last week that the Philippine Rating Services Corp. (PhilRatings) had assigned it a PRS Aaa rating (very strong) with a stable outlook for its planned maiden bond issuance worth P5 billion.

The company, which aims to cover 55% of Philippine households by 2023, also said the funds to be generated from the proposed bond offering would be used to support its capital expenditures.

Converges attributable net income for the first nine months of the year went up by 137% to P5.20 billion from P2.19 billion in the same period in 2020.

January-to-September revenues increased by 76% to P18.83 billion from P10.68 billion last year.

Converge ICT shares closed 0.30% higher at P33 apiece on Friday.

Modular cutting and stacking system advances flexible, fully automated operations – CompositesWorld

A new family of composite cutting and stacking cells are designed to operate as an integral part of automated composite part production lines rather than as solitary units. As such, they bring processors new levels of operational efficiency, quality control and worker ergonomics. When combined with CAD-based pattern design and advanced nesting software, digital (computer-controlled) cutting systemsfor composites enable fabricators to not only reduce material waste and costs even with complex-shaped parts but also reduce cutting time from days (when done manually) to minutes, lowering cycle time and increasing repeatability and reproducibility (R&R). Still, given the degree of maturity of composite cutting equipment, major innovations arent common.

Although cutting tables offer substantial speed and efficiency advantages, integrating them into fully automated production cells can be a challenge. Importantly, the process doesnt end with cutting out individual plies: Each piece must be collected, sorted, weighed and laid up in the ply stack prior to transfer to the next process step, be that preforming, compression molding, infusion or autoclave cure. Thus, seemingly simple tasks, like automated unloading of the cutting table, can and do become complicated quickly when considered in terms of the larger production process. For example, if nesting efficiency isnt balanced against ply prioritization, the first piece needed in a layup could be located at the far end of the table and the end of the cutting job where automated handling equipment cant easily access it. When high-rate fabrication processes are involved, extra time required to work around such inefficiencies can kill attempts to reduce cycle time and squeeze greater efficiency (and cost) from manufacturing operations.

To effectively integrate digital cutting systems into automated part production cells, all relevant equipment, including cutting and stacking (C&S) systems, robots and presses, must rapidly and accurately exchange data to manage timing and control quality.

In an effort to solve these problems, engineers at composite machinery OEM Schmidt & Heinzmann GmbH & Co. KG (S&H, Bruchsal, Germany) took a different approach to human/machine interfaces (HMIs) and the equipments underlying operating principles. This led to the development in 2015 of S&Hs AutoCut composite C&S system, with single cutting and stacking tables. In 2019, the technology was expanded and made more modular by allowing customers to combine multiple cutting tables to handle multiple types of material simultaneously, increasing process flexibility within the automation cell.

A number of features have been designed into the cutting unit, including continuous material traceability, unwinding slip compensation, interchangeable cutting heads, material flow count, material position sensing, active blade-wear measurement, automatic table calibration, adaptive nesting algorithm and active belt guiding control.

Because its intended to operate as an integral part of an automated production line rather than as a solitary unit, S&Hs AutoCut C&S system was designed around just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing principles to work in tandem with an industrial packaging robot. Hence, the machines programming algorithms consider features of the end product and not simply the sum of individual pieces to be cut. As such, operators specify final product or stack in terms of layup sequence, type of material used for each ply and exact target position for the whole stack and the relative position of each ply to the others. This leads to prioritization focused more on when a ply is needed and less on the nesting efficiency. Based on layup inputs, the software gathers all plies of the same material type and feeds that information into an advanced nesting algorithm, which combines them to calculate the most efficient cutting job all while treating the defined layup sequence and robot reachability of the plies as boundary conditions.

The system is said to achieve stacking accuracy of <1 millimeter/<0.04 inch.

In practice, once users input all required data on layup, materials and sequence, the systems programmable logic controller (PLC) assigns the cutting jobs to the AutoCut machine within the production cell. As soon as the first ply required to begin the layup sequence is cut, cutting pauses so the robot can acquire the ply. The robot itself already knows the position and orientation to place the ply on the stacking table. It also automatically generates a custom movement path, taking into consideration obstacles and geometric constraints within the cell and targetlocation in the layup. The system is said to achieve stacking accuracy of <1 millimeter/<0.04 inch. Once the robot retrieves the ply and clears the cutter, the system resumes cutting. This enables it to cut a ply every 15 seconds, making it fast enough to feed a press running a two-cavity tool and two-minute molding cycle, as is common with sheet molding compound (SMC). This ensures efficiencies gained during cutting arent immediately lost to inefficiencies in unloading and/or stacking.

Because all information generated within the production cell is shared, one feature built into the system thats helpful with many composite materials, but critical for SMC is areal weight compensation. Each ply is weighed immediately after cutting and that information is used to adjust, if necessary, the size of the following ply to be cut, minimizing differences in the total weight of the final charge prior to loading it into the press.

The ability to adjust on the fly to differences in areal weight is super important when cutting SMC, whose compounding process naturally introduces areal weight variations of as much as 3-8% within the same batch of material, explains Lukas Lipowsky, S&H technology center head. If you manufacture parts using plies cut with a fixed pattern from a material with inherent areal weight variation, then those differences would compound and lead to unacceptable part variation. Thats why SMC charges are typically loaded into the press using a precise weight rather than a fixed pattern cut to assure consistent finished-part properties. As part of the systems areal weight compensation, stacking tables can be equipped with an optional scale, permitting each ply to be weighed and analyzed during layup, which provides the PLC system with the necessary input to adjust the cutting pattern to achieve a constant package weight despite SMCs natural areal-weight variations.

The system is equipped with interchangeable cutting heads ranging from ultrasonic carbide blades (that vibrate 30,000 times/second, dont need cleaning and make almost no sound) to non-powered wheel blades and power-driven rotary polygon blades (for dry textiles) that enable a wide range of materials to be cut. Each cutter features quick connects. Additional features that help locate material, cutters and robots in space are robot and table calibration pins. The unit also features active blade-wear measurements to ensure clean, accurate cuts every time.

To automate SMC cutting and stacking, S&H combined its experience building SMC compounding lines with advanced predictive algorithms and applies it to real-time data gathered from each SMC C&S cell.

Other features include continuous material traceability, constant material positioning sensors which automatically correct material-edge location on the cutting table to minimize waste interchangeable cutters with quick connects, active blade-wear monitoring and a flexible gripper system with needle and vacuum modules. These facilitate rapid changes between materials and enablea wide range of materials to be cut, moved and stacked. Each cutting unit is designed to cut a single material, which provides for stable, continuous production and high availability.

Additionally, regardless of how many S&H C&S cells are being operated in a given facility, the central control unit has superordinate control, acting as a central repository for all data generated while directly managing each cutter and nesting for that cutter for high efficiency. (Not only can the control system remotely collect critical production data from all cells, including cycle time, material batch and size and weight of each ply, but it also tracks error messages.) Last but not least, the standard AutoCut system includes a cutting unit, stacking table, robot with grippers and software.

AutoCuts modular design allows it to be adapted to a variety of manufacturing processes from compression molded SMC to preforms for wet-compression and resin transfer molding, as well as prepregs thus saving significant development and engineering costs and improving sustainability of the production cell so it can easily be adapted for future projects.

Our holistic approach to system software means operators dont require a specialists knowledge to use the equipment, explains David Bcheler, S&H process engineering director. Robot paths and positions are automatically generated and nesting algorithms maximize material utilization while ensuring the calculated solution can actually be produced. Even better, during a given amount of time, the automated system delivers 20% more components than manual loading/unloading of the press. Combined, the 30 AutoCut cells currently in operation are capable of producing up to 7.5 million composite parts per year and are used to produce products ranging from household goods to parts for cars and planes.

To aid in accurate pick-up, movement and layup of different types of ply materials, the robot is equipped with a flexible system ofneedle and vacuum grippers and material-detection capabilities. An online size adjustment feature, which permits a single gripper to dynamically adapt to a much wider range of ply sizes and to process an even larger number of plies, is available as an option.

One processor with a sizeable investment in AutoCut systems is Teijin Automotive Technologies (formerly Continental Structural Plastics, Auburn Hills, Mich., U.S.). The company is a Tier 1 supplier of thermoset and thermoplastic composite components to the North American automotive and commercial truck markets. Last year, Teijin Automotive installed 10 AutoCut systems in three of its U.S. facilities: four cells in Carey, Ohio, and three cells each in North Baltimore, Ohio, and Huntington, Ind., with another six cells on order for 2022. The first active programs on the equipment began in March 2021.

All eight of our AutoCut cells are used to cut and stack SMC from material we compound ourselves, explains Adam Maes, Teijin Automotive engineering manager Carey plant. That SMC is used to mold Class A exterior and interior automotive panels. The largest SMC package the equipment is delivering weighs 35 pounds [16 kilograms] and the finished part measures 3.0 feet by 5.0 feet [0.9 meters by 1.5 meters]. At any point in time, there are two to three ply kits in process of delivery into a press.

When asked why Teijin Automotive made the investment and what benefits have been seen, Maes says, Manual molding processes can be demanding on our workforce, so providing a safe, ergonomic system to our operations team was a key driver for adding this technology, which is also part of our strategic automation plan moving forward. He adds, Weve seen additional quality benefits in the form of greater consistency in material weight and position delivered into the molds. That, in turn, has improved press output efficiency and lowered scrap. We especially like the intuitive HMI display, the ultrasonic cutting heads, live weight compensation algorithm to account for material variation and edge-detection sensors to position the cut path.

A great blitz game is often more than a matter of accuracy, but of stunning and unpredictable moves that keep the commentators and viewersand, for the players, their opponentson their toes. But the very best players can also win at blitz with high levels of accurate play. Both types of games, the dramatic and the accurate, can make for historically great blitz games.

From the invention of chess until at least the 1960s and up to even a few years ago, however, "historically great blitz" would have been considered an oxymoron. Now, almost in 2022, blitz chess has grown to be treated as an equally legitimate form of the game as the classical hours-long variety. It certainly has a reputation as friendlier to modern audiences, with our short attention spans and... What was I talking about again?

So, what are the best blitz games ever? There's almost too many to choose from, with literally billions having been played by now. But we tried to pick out 10 fascinating thrill rides.

When Chess.com held our Immortal Games contest in April 2021, this game came out on top, and for good reason. In just 18 moves, Brazil's GM Luis Paulo Supi defeated GM Magnus Carlsen (yes, that Magnus Carlsen) with a stunning sacrifice. It's one of those rare moves that speaks for itself.

Particularly amazing is that what looks like a slow buildup, Supi sacrificing a piece to double on the open a-file, becomes forced checkmate in what feels like an instant.

Don't discount the possibility that Supi had seen this pattern before. If you read our piece above on the best rapid games ever, you saw Kramnik-Anand 2008, which featured a mirror image of the same mating idea.

But if Supi had seen the idea, Carlsen may not have. He was caught totally by surprisejust see his expression in this thumbnail:

Blitz chess was a thing before 1970, but only casually. The Herceg Novi blitz tournament was the first major event of its kind, and would be the only one for nearly two decades. GM Bobby Fischer was at the height of his powers in 1970, and he proved it at Herceg Novi with an absurd 19/22 score,winning the tournament by 4.5 points.

There are several Fischer games from this event to choose from, but his game with Black against GM Viktor Korchnoi was perhaps his best of the event.

Fischer's notes say more than enough about the game. About his tournament performance, Chess Life & Review wrote in July 1970: "The Soviet blitz specialists... all expected that Bobby would absorb some good lessons [but] instead of taking lessons he gave them to his peerless opponents."

A big part of the drama in blitz isn't the moves themselves, but the time available in which to make them. Time is of the absolute essence, but in 1994, GM Viswanathan Anand showed that patience can pay off as well. With five minutes to play an armegeddon game, Anand spent 1:43 on move four.

Try not to tense up as commentators GM Daniel King and GM Maurice Ashley lose patience with Anand's forever-taking in the opening (uploaded here by an account unaffiliated with us).

As the announcers noted, Smirin's move order was unusual. Anand was trying to remember all the intricacies of this move order before committing. Here's the full game:

No one could have known in advance, but the time Vishy took ultimately paid off as he won the game. In his 2019 bookMind Master he reached this conclusion from the game: "It's a lesson that almost runs as a leitmotif through my career: It's not the worst idea to take a two-minute pause and get some clarity."

Once Smirin missed 18...Be4, as he must have when playing 17.Qxb7, and Anand saw it to keep his piece, the game was over. Even without a ton of time, Anand never lost the advantage afterwards, another display of his amazing speed as a younger player in the 90seven if he did take 103 seconds on one move early in the game.

If Magnus ever did play a world championship against GM Ding Lirena significant "if" at this pointhe could not necessarily get away with drawing every classical game, with Ding having already proven he can take Magnus in speed chess even when the stakes are high.

The 2019 Sinquefield Cup went to tiebreaks after and Ding and Carlsen both scored 6.5/11, which Magnus achieved by winning his last two games after nine draws. (In fact, in the main event, 54 of the 66 games were draws, and 10 of the 11 players played three decisive games or fewer. The only exception: GM Ian Nepomniachtchi with six, which he split 3-3.)

Entering the tiebreaker round, Carlsen had won all of his last 10 tiebreaks, going back 12 years. Not only did Ding end that streak, but he did it in style. Chess.com named the second blitz tiebreak game as the eighth-best game of 2019, and that's at any time control.

Titled Tuesday is played 52 times a year, by hundreds of titled players each week, and for 11 rounds every tournament. Naturally, it has produced many great games, but this one played on August 24, 2021 may take the cake for pure wildness. It's one of those games that gets far too complicated for even masters to play perfectly in three minutes. That's why a great blitz game is sometimes about more than accuracy.

Perhaps the earliest famous examples of GM Hikaru Nakamura's online brilliance were these troll jobs on older engines, played without increment at the Internet Chess Club.

Well, the endings were troll-like, but the opening and middlegames weren't. NM Sam Copeland explains the Rybka game here, so the game for our list is the one vs. Crafty. It was played earlier, in 2007. And, although it's a matter of taste, underpromoting to a bunch of knights and checkmating is probably more amusing than doing the same thing with bishops.

It was also a purer effort than the one against Rybka; no exchange sac trickery this time. Just the closed-position destruction still possible for a top human against a mid-aughts engine. Now, of course, even the best humans would need to get odds to compete with a computer. And in three minutes without increment, it would take some pretty heavy odds.

From a four-player tournament in St. Louis starring the top three U.S. players and GM Garry Kasparov. Nakamura won the overall event, and by 2016 Kasparov was still capable of doing better than 2.5/18 in a high-level blitz tournament, but GM Wesley So's win over Kasparov was the game of the tournament. He didn't need any time to warm up, either, pulling it off in the first round of the tournament.

It was an instant classic, receiving raves from nearly every publication that covered the event.

Supi won the immortal game contest, so a different game was needed for the best queen sac. GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov earned it with this effort.

The computer prefers 11.Qe4, but the sac is a legitimate option, obviously scores the most style points, and Black has to give the queen back with 12...Qxc7 to stay competitive. Falling into a mate-in-one at the end isn't necessary either, but the only good move, 17...Kf6, sure doesn't feel like a good move, especially in blitz.

This game features the lowest-rated competitors on the list, but you'll see why it makes it by move 17. It was runner-up to Supi-Carlsen in the Immortal Games contest.

Yes, this game actually happened and is not a puzzle. Somehow Black's 16...a6 traps his entire queenside after White's 17.a5 response. The knight on b8 now has zero squares, with a6, c6, and d7 all occupied and blockaded. Because of that, the rook on a8 can't go anywhere besides a7 and back. And the same pawns blocking the knight also shut in the light-squared bishop. Now that's a bad bishop!

After trading everything else off, White begins trolling his pieces away. Amusingly, this actually blows the advantage, but White is never losing the game despite being down two pieces, and the computer actually needs a few seconds to decide that the position is equal, not losing, for White after 25.Re8+ (a move Smerdon admitted to as being a bit "cheeky"). It's always nice to trick a computer these days, even briefly.

When the dust settles, White's free bishop and rampant kingside pawns checkmate Black just as Black is finally trying to break back out. A silly ending fitting for a silly game.

Uncovered when we wrote and recorded about Nakamura's best moves on Chess.com was this dandy.

Nakamura played GM Hans Niemann 20 times on this date, won all but one, and was above 90% accuracy in nearly every game. Some of us have a hard enough time getting 90% once in 20 times, but you don't need me to tell you that's why Hikaru's Hikaru.

Musk, as has been well established, wants to realize his dream of making humans a multiplanetary species and build the first colony on Mars by 2050. To make the Red Planet habitable for life, Musk has previously suggested terraforming Mars by nuking the planets ice-capped poles. But now, perhaps after realizing such a plan would require nearly the entire worlds supply of nuclear warheads to accomplish, Musk is taking a more sensible approach to colonization.

This isnt the first time Musk has mentioned using glass domes as habitats on the Red Planet. In a 2016 Reddit AMA, Musk said glass panes with carbon fiber frames could be used to build geodesic domes on the Martian surface, while mining droids could build pressurized caves underground for industrial operations.

More recently, Musk laid out his plans to build a city on Mars in a livestream event last month. He stressed the idea of a Martian colony being fully self-sufficient in case support from mothership Earth would somehow be cut off.

The acid test, really, is, if the ships from Earth stop coming from any reason, does Mars die out? Musk told interviewer Robert Zubrin during the event. For any reason. It could be banal, or it could be nuclear armageddon, he added.

In the interview, Musk claimed a fully self-sustaining city would need around 1 million inhabitants and require 1 million tons of cargo. But if Musk plans to transport that much cargo, hes going to need a bigger ship.

SpaceX is currently developing its next generation of reusable rocket, dubbed the Starship. The fully-reusable spaceship is designed to carry 150 tons or 100 people into orbit and have the capability of refueling in space. Starship uses the powerful Raptor Vacuum engine, which is specifically designed to operate in the vacuum of space and use fuels that can be refined on Mars.

Musk has said one of the first colonization missions to Mars would carry equipment to build a refueling station on the surface, with Starship acting as an initial habitat. Musk claimed in the livestream that the first crewed Starship missions could launch as early as 2026. Although a prototype of the spacecraft recently completed a successful 500-foot hop, the experimental rocket has a history of going boom.

If Musk does accomplish his dream, who can tell what life may be like on Marss first colony? But based on Musks previous sentiments, it may look a lot like the Wild West. When asked in the same Twitter thread about what laws and society might exist on the new Martian colony, Musk replied, Let the Martians decide their own future.

Why Earth is habitable but Venus looks like hell – Big Think

If you were a humanoid space traveler visiting our Solar System for the first time and looking for a new place to call home, you would be happy to find two large terrestrial worlds: Earth and Venus. The large size of these worlds (as compared to smaller Mars and tiny Mercury) would matter to you because only larger planets have enough gravity to keep an atmosphere for many billions of years. As you traveled closer, you would see that the two worlds were so similar in radius, mass, and composition that they could be twins. Sure, Venus was closer to the Sun than Earth, so it should be somewhat hotter, but a little terraforming could take care of that.

But then as you neared Venus, your dream of an almost habitable world would vaporize. Rather than being a little hotter than Earth, temperatures on Venus are over 800 F, and its atmosphere is so thick that surface pressures could crush a nuclear submarine. If Earth looked like a Garden of Eden to you, Venus would appear as a living hell.

So, what the hell happened? How did these two worlds end up with such divergent histories?

There are still many unanswered questions about Venus past, but it does seem like we understand the outline of the most basic question about Venus: Why is it so insanely hot? Just being closer to the Sun is not enough to give the right answer. Instead, the real culprit is something called the runaway greenhouse effect.

The Venetian atmosphere is heavy with carbon dioxide (CO2). The Earths atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% everything else. CO2 comes in at a mere 0.039% of the air you are breathing right now. That is a small fraction for a molecule that, as we will see, has a big role to play in our story. For Venus, on the other hand, CO2 is pretty much all there is to the atmosphere. It accounts for more than 95% of all its gases.

Why does this matter? As everyone on Earth is learning via global warming, the greenhouse effect occurs when sunlight (which comes at mostly shorter wavelengths) warms the ground, causing it to radiate its own longer wavelength (thermal) radiation. CO2 is very efficient at absorbing this light and trapping energy that normally would have escaped into space. This means putting more CO2 in the atmosphere is like throwing a blanket over your planet. With so much CO2 in Venus atmosphere, its surface temperature rose until the whole world became a scalding hellscape.

Given this basic planetary physics, the question now becomes: Where did all the CO2 come from? Thats where the runaway part of the runaway greenhouse effect appears.

The principal way CO2 gets added to a planets atmosphere is through volcanic eruptions. Molten rock explodes through the surface, venting huge amounts of CO2. Radar imaging of Venus shows ample evidence for volcanism in the recent past (meaning the last hundreds of millions of years). But what volcanoes give, water can take away. Weathering by water in the form of rain and rivers breaks rocks down to their chemical components. Later these molecular components can bind with CO2 and get packed back into solid forms that is, rocks. This is the basic process creating what are called carbonate minerals (like the limestone under Miami).

So, CO2 belched into a planets atmosphere via volcanoes can go back into the ground as rocks. Any form of plate tectonics means the rocks will go back into the planets lower regions where they melt. Eventually, this CO2 will find its way back into the atmosphere through future volcanic eruptions. It is a geological cycle that regulates the CO2 levels and the greenhouse effect on planets. It is also a cycle that appears to have been broken on Venus.

At some point, Venus likely had more water. But when some of that water evaporated, it made it high into the atmosphere as water vapor (that is, H20 molecules in the air) and a deadly process began. Close to the edge of space, UV radiation from the Sun (the same kind of radiation that causes skin cancer) zapped the water molecules and broke them apart into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen, being the lightest of all elements, easily escaped into interplanetary space as soon as the water molecules were broken apart. With the hydrogen gone, there was no chance for the broken water molecules to reform. Over time and high in its atmosphere, Venus was bleeding its precious water into space.

The planets water loss resulted in what scientists call a positive feedback loop on climate. More water loss meant less rock erosion and less CO2 bound up in rocks. More CO2 in the atmosphere meant more greenhouse effect and higher temperatures. But higher temperatures meant yet more water loss, which feeds the vicious cycle. On Earth, there is no danger of losing our water in the way Venus did because our atmosphere has a cold layer relatively close to the ground. This cold trap condenses water into rain before it gets to the upper reaches of the atmosphere.

All of this means that, in the past, Venus may have been a very different world from what we see now. There are scientists who even believe that Venus may have held vast oceans and been a blue world. There might even have been life, like on Earth. But somewhere along the way, a combination of furious volcanic activity and the loss of that water to space condemned our sister planet.

Snag up a popular spacefaring game and five of its expansion boards now on sale and get savings as high as 33% this week ahead of Black Friday.

The objective of Terraforming Mars is written in the game's name. One to five players can compete with one another to gain the most points towards raising the habitability of the Red Planet for future human visitors. Players gain points by raising Mars' temperature, the planet's oxygen level and by creating and expanding oceans.

The game features several card categories that allow the players some control about their play level of difficulty. Project cards stimulate the imagination by tasking players to do things like introduce plant life and build cities, and there are more than 200 different projects to complete.

The Terraforming Mars Board Game is now on sale at Amazon for $49.85, which is 29% off its usual retail price.

Terraforming Mars is an upgradable game, too. One of the unique characteristics of Terraforming Mars are its tiles, which players can place across the board illustration of the Red Planet. One available upgrade lets players add a higher visual element to their game.

Known as the Big Box, this upgrade comes with 90 special tiles to dress up the game, including a set of 3D terrain tiles. Big Box also serves as a storage solution for the main game and its expansions (which are also on sale this week).

Terraforming Mars: Big Box is now available for $121.30 at Amazon, which is a 19% savings off its retail price of $149.99.

Once you are ready for an expansion kit, there are many to choose from.

One option is Prelude, which allows players to move through the backstory of the corporations that terraform Mars. This kit offers about 90 to 120 minutes of average playtime, according to the manufacturer Stronghold Games. And just like the original game, it is intended for ages 12 and older.

Another expansion board option takes players to the other side of the Red Planet. The Terraforming Hellas & Elysium: The Other Side of Mars Expansion Board consists of a double-sided game board. Each side represents two new areas of Mars for gameplay: they include the opposite side of Mars' equator and the south polar region of the planet. This expansion kit is now 30% off its retail price, selling for $29.18 at Walmart.

Terraforming Mars Turmoil is one of the highest-rated expansions. This set is suitable for experts of the original game. It comes with a new card type called global events, which features things like dust storms and riots, plus new project cards too. You can now save 15% on this expansion, available for $29.54 at Amazon.

The Venus Next expansion kit takes the game to Earth's other celestial neighbor. Players can work to build flying cities, reduce Venus' greenhouse effect, or introduce life to the planet. Like the original game, this expansion is recommended for ages 12 and up and offers about 90- to 120-minute play. Terraforming Mars: Venus Next is now 17% off on Walmart, available now for $24.95.

One extension of the Terraforming Mars is Ares Expedition, a standalone game inspired by the original that features faster gameplay. Ares Expedition is also on sale for Black Friday, now $39.99 on Walmart (originally $49.99).
