A monument of magnanimity in New Delhi – The New Indian Express

In Delhi, you get down at Indira Gandhi International Airport, and via either Nehru Place or Motilal Nehru Marg, you can reach Rajiv Chowk. This, though sounding like a mere description of the route, in fact, is a political statement. Whether one dares to discuss it or not, the fact remains that one single ruling family in India has been recognised and decorated too disproportionately over the last seven decades. Journalist and former Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash had very painstakingly compiled a list of over 100 government organisations and institutions named after the members of just one family, obviously from the Nehru dynasty. The recognition is so disproportionate that the long list also incorporates a national park in Mumbai named after Sanjay Gandhi, whose only qualification to fame was being Indira Gandhis son.

It is in this setting one has to assess the importance of the inauguration of Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya in Delhi a fortnight ago. The Sangrahalaya is not just about the addition of yet another iconic spot to the list of must-visit sites in the national capital but it is also important for at least three other more prominent reasons. Firstly, it marks the institutionalisation of the end of political untouchability practised religiously so far by the Congress and many so-called progressive political groups. Secondly, it also sets up a unique example of how a project that could be considered purely political could be handled in a completely non-partisan and objective manner. Thirdly, it underscores the importance of documenting contemporary history and preserving artefacts of the present times. In addition, it also stresses on showcasing the contemporary history using almost all available modern technologies.

Firstly, the Sangrahalaya is unique for both the concept as well as the conduct. It showcases by far the most inclusive and democratic approach towards creating monuments that have a political underpinning. So far, only five ex-PMsNehru, Shastri, Indira, Rajiv and Vajpayeehave their samadhis right in the capital. P V Narasimha Rao died in Delhi but his family was not allowed to carry out the last rights in the capital, lest there would be a demand for a samadhi. Besides, the national capital has museums dedicated to Nehru, Shastri and Indira only. The new Sangrahalaya puts an end to this selective generosity. It showcases the contribution of all ex-prime ministers while providing enough space for all future PMs. More importantly, the depiction of the contribution of every PM along with a review of his/ her tenure has been done in an indisputably objective manner. As a result, at least so far, no family of any ex-PM could find a reason to complain about. In fact, as commented by a visitor, the Modi government has captured the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru in a much more impressive manner as compared to the old Nehru Museum, created by the dynasty of Indias first PM. Interestingly, the gifts received by past PMs and later on deposited in the Toshakhana or the official government store of collected gifts, and displayed in the Sangrahalaya are very limited in number. This is because, apparently, not many ex-PMs had deposited them in the Toshakhana. Nonetheless, as underscored by Modi, every government led by every PM has contributed to the nations advancement in its own way and the Sangrahalaya not just recognises this but also expresses the nations gratitude towards all of them.

Secondly, the Sangrahalaya comes across as a textbook example of total objectivity in presenting all former prime ministers, representing different political ideologies. This, in the backdrop of scores of examples of political untouchability that the nation had been a witness to for several decades, is just remarkable. No matter how brief was the tenure of a PM, he or she is duly recognised here. Considering that public discourse in India has always evolved under the shadow of what many believe as political correctness, this museum steadfastly remains away from such a lure. In our country, few PMs had decorated themselves with Bharat Ratna while they themselves were in office. For a few others, their decoration had to wait for a more sympathetic political party to come to power.

Considering all this, with this project, PM Narendra Modi has opened a new refreshing chapter of democratising national recognition to our past PMs, making it a museum of magnanimity.

Lastly, the setting up of this Sangrahalaya is singularly important considering the fact that as a society we are not famous for properly documenting contemporary history. In fact, generally speaking, neither our universities nor contemporary researchers and history scholars have given due importance to the post-independence history of India. This museum has effectively done away with this glaring lacuna. History is always in the making and one can hope that this Sangrahalay would keep reminding us about the continued importance of documentation, compilation of archival material and also collection of artefacts of not just the past but also the present. Our criminal neglect of all the above has made India a nation of maximum history with minimum institutionalised efforts to respect and recognise the same. Also important is the fact that this Sangrahalaya is much more than a traditional museum. History telling, here, comes with a blend of creativity and modern technology. From artificial intelligence and simulation technology to machine learning and virtual reality, most modern technologies have been used here in a seamless manner making this modern Indias tech-marvel too.

When next time in Delhi, visiting this Sangrahalaya is a must as it tells us how to look at your past, while being dispassionate about the present for the benefit of the future.

Voters should put Kelly Gaskill out

Commissioner Kelly Gaskill (soon to be ex-commissioner) stood against voter centers and then refused to buy the needed equipment for the 2020 general election.

This resulted in thousands of Madison County voters standing in line for hours to vote in November 2020. This also resulted in some of Madison Countys long lines being shown on national television.

Madison County voters, this is your year to tell Kelly Gaskill that it is her turn to stand in line. The unemployment line. I would say that Kelly Gaskill should not even be elected dog catcher, but that would be an insult to all dog catchers.

One other question remains, and that is: Why did not Kelly Gaskills husband, current state Sen. Mike Gaskill, talk his wife out of her two vindictive decisions?

What is so offensive about the AHS mascots? The Anderson Indians have been a bedrock of Anderson school culture for years. Their respect for the Native traditions always moved me, and I didnt even attend school there.

The woke culture needs to back off. Some of their rituals may not be technically accurate but are by no means performed with malice.

Hope the Anderson school board shows some spine in this matter and doesnt cave into woke idiot pressure.

Leonard Pitts column of Friday, April 22, 2022, Conservatism still shows itself as a doctrine of hate, entitlement, takes quite a convoluted path in tying a man with a guitar on a crowded plane singing a Christian worship song to conservatives as hateful because they disagreed with Muslim Ilhan Omars condemnation of Christians publicly singing a worship song.

Pitts concluded they are haters because, according to Pitts, if Muslims held a similar prayer session on a plane, and this is a direct quote, in a post-9/11 world, it would end with them tackled to the floor and duct taped to their chairs as the pilot radioed ahead to the nearest airfield requesting permission for an emergency landing.

Really? Is there a double standard that persecutes Muslims in this way? Are they routinely tackled and taped to chairs when expressing their religion publicly? I havent seen that, heard about it or read it in any news article.

No, actually the double standard is that political correctness protects them and everyone else except white, male Christians which is the prevailing woke credentialism. They can be called haters, bigots and racists without repercussions of any kind.

And should this seem a little exaggerated, just look to Leonard Pitts article and read it for yourself. According to him, singing a Christian song becomes a worship service, which becomes rude, which becomes entitlement, which becomes hate.

This is the agenda of the left in action: divide Americans, and you will conquer America.

Michael Miller, Anderson

I had to laugh (even though it really wasnt funny) that the article by Mr. Hawes (Experiment shows that changing the channel can make a difference, Saturday, April 16) was as one-sided as the news stations he was referring to.

The political science professors who did this study neglected to find any CNN viewers who would watch Fox News and get their eyes opened by articles that were ignored by CNN for the better part of the year.

Such as the Biden family association with foreign countries (I wont go into the details; too many to write in 250 words). The drugs, killings, human trafficking, the list goes on and on. His tearing down then declaring he will build back better.

Well, back to this bogus one-sided political experiment. I watch both channels, and I would say that CNN omits more information that changes the story than Fox. When one channel refuses to report all of the news for such a long time, I have to ask myself why.

Just look at the ratings. You can tell who is controlled by the left. How long has most of the media declared the Steele dossier was real, Hunter Bidens laptop wasnt, President Biden didnt know about his sons dealings with China and Russia, open borders arent causing a problem, inflation was Putins fault, closing the oil wells isnt the problem.

But the main channels would not report it for so long. Researchers found participants going back to their old viewing habits, and their old opinions, as soon as the experiment ended. Too bad they neglected to ask why.

Why is DeSantis fighting Disney? It’s a warning to ‘woke’ big business to stay out of culture wars – USA TODAY

Gov. DeSantis, Florida lawmakers revoke Disney's special rights

Gov. DeSantis signed a bill that would terminate all special districts created before 1968, including a district where Disney properties are located.

Claire Hardwick, USA TODAY

Opening up a new front in the nation's culture wars, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis revokedWalt Disney's self-governing authorityin apparent retaliation for opposingthe state's new "Don't Say Gay" law.

DeSantis signed a bill Friday that will cancel special privileges granted to Disney decades ago to govern the land surrounding its Disney World theme park. The new law,set to take effect in June 2023, willcost Disney tens of millions of dollars a year.

The weeks-long public feud has upended the once cozy relationship between Florida and Disney. It's also just the latest salvo in the political rights battle against wokeness.

'Corporate-sanctioned racism'?How war on critical race theory spread from schools to big business

'Woke mind virus': Why Elon Musk believes 'woke mind virus' and 'wokeness' are threats to modern civilization

Increasingly, conservatives are using hardball tactics to punish big companies for speaking out on hot-button social issues.Once a rallying cry for systemic racism and injustice, "wokeness" has been co-opted by the political right to decry "political correctness" and progressive talking points.

Conservatives are learning how to fight against woke capital, activist Christopher Rufo told USA TODAY.

Republicans pounced on Delta Air Lines and Major League Baseball for opposing Georgias restrictive voting laws. Texas threatened Citigroup over its policy to pay for employees to travel out of state for abortions.

This tougher stance is a far cry from the business-friendly politics of yesteryear.

In 2015, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and the GOP-controlled statehouse revised a religious freedom law after pressure from leaders of major corporations including Apple and Salesforce who warned it would allow businesses to discriminate against gay people.

The Disney-DeSantis dust-up marks a sharp escalation in the GOP push to get corporations to stop mixing politics and business, Rufo said.

CEOs should beware: Conservatives are putting a price on woke capital and, if they want to protect shareholder value, they should stay out of the culture war, Rufo said.

Rufo is behind an effort to put pressure on corporations to ditch progressive attitudes.First, he took aim at how racism is taught, not just in schools but in private companies.

Disney and 'Don't Say Gay' law: Here's what Disney has said so far about its feud with DeSantis over 'Don't Say Gay' law

Is the magic still there?: Disney fans react to feud with DeSantis, Florida lawmakers

Conservative attacks on what Rufo calls critical race theory led to a wave of legislation in statehouses across the country. At the behest of DeSantis, Floridas GOP-controlled Legislature passed the nation's first law restricting what private employers can teach workers about race.

Now Rufo is focused on reining in discussions of LGBTQ issues in public classrooms and private cubicles.

Disney became entangled in a face-off with DeSantis when CEO Bob Chapek pledged Disney would work to repeal Florida's newParental Rights in Education Act,dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" law by critics. Itbans classroom discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation until the third grade and limit it for older students.

In response, DeSantis, who is considering a presidential run in 2024, slammed Woke Disney. If Disney wants to pick a fight, they chose the wrong guy, he wrote in a recent campaign fundraising email.

Gov. DeSantis is proving to be the most capable conservative leader in the nation, exhibiting remarkable courage and strategic wisdom in his face-off with Disney executives, Rufo said.

Sexist conspiracy theories are putting women’s freedom of speech and ability to get justice at risk Laura Waddell – The Scotsman

Jacksons comments, overheard on a train, breached a court order protecting anonymity of complainants. What is being lost in all the noise is why that anonymity is essential.

Throughout the whole sorry saga, furious commentary on social media has illuminated precisely why nobody should be playing fast and loose with identities of complainants: it dissuades other victims of sexual violence, watching on, from coming forward.

That a lawyer should not be publicly blabbing details of a live case at all should, you would think, be a straightforward concept to get ones head around, not least if happens to be the most high-profile news story in Scotland at the time.

But holding ones tongue in general, even about sensitive subjects involving vulnerable people, has not been in vogue since the advent of Twitter and public figures publicly losing the plot.

That's a heady mix combined with the culture war grift du jour of whipping up a frenzy about being silenced (as a generation ago they bemoaned political correctness) and those who interpret strides made by social justice movements such as MeToo as punitive to men suddenly shouldered with the ever-so-tedious burden of being expected to treat women with respect.

Anyone with reactionary tendencies is easily convinced he too should be able to say whatever he wants without consequence. Misogynists, like racists, like the far right in general, love tending to delusional fantasies of persecution; there they harvest their excuses for lashing out and kicking down. Some even come to believe any pushback they face in the course of spouting off online to be a human rights injustice on par with the fate of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

In the lively world of Scottish political discussions, some loud voices have seethed all along about complainants being afforded anonymity. Political conspiracy theories swirling around exploit misogynist world views, telling those eager to hear it women cant be trusted.

From there, it was simply a short, angry hop to thinking that tearing into complainants was fair game, or harassing women journalists who covered the case. But this is not just a local phenomenon.

You dont have to look far in any direction to find the grotesque belief women are acceptable collateral damage when it comes to mans right to do and say whatever he wants, wrath awaiting she who gets in his way. This belief is wrong.

Leaks from the Scottish Parliaments inquiry, particularly sessions with complainants, received less coverage than Jacksons loose lips, but I have not forgotten about it. It's perhaps even more disturbing that we don't know how this confidential information got out, and I still want to know how it did.

Believe me, Scottish women have been watching, taking everything in. Our political, cultural, and social institutions must do better to support women coming forward with testimonies of abuse, violence, and intimidation. Our freedom of expression, and our ability to seek justice, depend upon it.

POTUS Broadway Review: The President Cant Be Held Responsible for This Mess – Yahoo Entertainment

The 21st century finally has its Moose Murders.

As if her two stage collaborations with Mel Brooks werent enough to make her the Vulgarian of Broadway, director-choreographer Susan Stroman followed The Producers and Blazing Saddles with Big Fish, which featured dancing elephant buttocks, and Bullets Over Broadway, which featured dancing hot-dog penises. Its fitting that Stroman should direct Selina Fillingers new comedy, POTUS, which opened Wednesday at the Shubert Theatre. Its a play that finds humor in suppositories, an anal abscess, dildos, scat, pus from that aforementioned abscess and a character who vomits blue puke. The blue-puke projectile happens twice, maybe three times. After that, the character just dry-heaves a lot for our amusement.

No surprise, POTUS is set in the White House. The big surprise is how much its subtitle Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive misleads. Here, its not the president but his wife (Vanessa Williams), lesbian sister (Lea DeLaria), paramour (Julianne Hough), a female reporter (Lilli Cooper) and his female staff (Rachel Dratch, Suzy Nakamura, and Julie White) who are the real incompetents.

Beowulf Boritts massive West Wing set goes round and round, featuring everything from the chief of staffs office to the ladies loo, but its ultimate effect is to scatter the comedy all over the place. Williams has the least to do and doesnt look happy doing it. White tries especially hard, screaming to the point that she gives a pretty good vocal imitation of Harvey Fierstein. And Cooper may be the first actor to use breast pumps on a Broadway stage.

Dratch has a fun moment early in Act 1 when she accidentally ingests a lot of hallucinogens and cant find the ground shes walking on. In Act 2, shes still tripping but now covered in stage blood and multi-colored Post-Its, and wearing a big pink innertube. Since Boritts spinning set wore out its novelty in the previous act, Stroman sends Dratch into the audience to distract, followed by a few other actors, who look as if theyre really trying to escape the theater.

Hough also manages to entertain. Its refreshing to see a character break through the glass ceiling of political correctness with such determination. Maybe only a female director and a female playwright would have the courage to feature a pregnant character vomit repeatedly, then perform (offstage) fellatio on a couple of Secret Service men, who turn out to be disabled war veterans (one blind, the other an amputee), before performing cartwheels and the splits on stage. As a critic, I live to write sentences like that.

Earth Day, indigenous peoples, and other possible worlds – PRESSENZA International News Agency

The United Nations called for making peace with nature and transforming economic systems for environmental sustainability. Diaguita leader Mario Quinteros questions politically correct discourse and points the finger at those responsible for the climate crisis: economic elites, governments and a political-economic model that only prioritises money.

By Mario Quinteros

On 22 April, International Earth Day will once again be commemorated. The United Nations (UN) website reflects it by pointing out the need to make peace with nature. It cites a scientific report that warns of climate change, mentions development achievements and stresses concern for the future. Paradoxically, the proposal comes from the same rational thinking of the West that, for centuries, called on us to confront nature with one main objective: the appropriation of Mother Earth for profit.

The UN proposes the chimera of transforming economic systems towards sustainability. Everyone has a role to play in shifting human knowledge, ingenuity, technology and cooperation from serving the transformation of nature to serving transformation, says the UN. It addresses everyone and thus avoids singling out those responsible for the war with nature (if we define it by opposition to the title of the report).

The same thinking that was characterised by explaining the march of humanity (seen from its logic) by objective reasons, today encompasses the need to make peace with nature by involving all of us equally. It overlooks the fact that it is this same thinking, this same epistemology, which developed a philosophy, an idea of man and woman as products of divine creation in confrontation with nature and not as part of it, that started the war against nature. There was a simple reason: to justify the appropriation of Mother Earth for their own use. It is therefore understandable that the UN does not investigate the causes of the climate crisis, because it would undermine the interests that govern it, the interests of the bourgeoisies behind the states that command the UN. For this reason, and for no other reason, his proposal slips into the voluntarism of political correctness.

The UN seems to forget that the pandemic showed how the dominant sectors conduct the war against nature. The causes point to the exacerbated development of accumulation, to large-scale food production concentrated in the hands of a few, the consequences of economic logic. Covid highlighted the consequences of the advance of capitalist society, which is heading towards collapse, and for which the global economic elite bears enormous responsibility.

For the billionaires, the future of technology consists in its ability to escape. The goal is to transcend the human condition and protect themselves from climate change, large migratory flows and global pandemics, notes a journalistic analysis. One example is billionaire Jeff Bezos, who is looking to develop a rocket company to colonise space.

That is to say, far from thinking about making friends with nature, the worlds elites are already thinking about abandoning the planet, which is increasingly deteriorating in many aspects, from the ecological to the political with its growing right-wing political discourse on a global level, hateful, racist, sexist, xenophobic discourses.

From another logic and feeling, from the Indigenous Peoples and those diversities and pluralities, we should not only stick to the anniversaries dictated to us by the world elite through their organisations, but we should continue to build a world in which many worlds fit, where plurality is the common currency and where respect for diversity is practised, both in the human sphere and in the sphere of Mother Earth. This will happen if we resolutely confront this capitalism-extractivism-eurocentrism that even with the discourse of caring for the earth seeks to flee from it because of the deterioration to which it has subjected it.

Joe Rogan Claims That Controversy Has Offered Him 2 Million In Subscriber Growth – Daily Music Roll

The Joe Rogan Experience host Joe Rogan is claiming that the n-word controversy has offered him a hike of more than 2 million followers on his Spotify profile.

Previously, Joe Rogan got involved in a controversy regarding his usage of the n-word and his personal opinion of COVID-19. However, it did not make him lose any subscribers instead boosted his online follower base on Spotify.

Rogan has gained much popularity through his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience on Spotify. The host claimed that he has claimed a huge number of followers during the controversy.

The controversies occurred on Fridays episode that featured Douglas Murray, a renowned British political commentator. Murray said to Rogan, You have been put through the wringer since we last met, with reference to the netizens protest and trying to cancel Rogan and his show. He said, They did a number on you. Wow.

Rogan responded, Its interesting, my subscriptions went up massively thats whats crazy. He was quite excited about the fact that the controversy did not defame him and instead offered more monthly listeners for his podcast.

He further said, During the height of it all, I gained two million subscribers Yeah, [the media] went for it. Its also fortunate that the people who went for it were CNN. Theyre so untrustworthy and people know how biased they are and socially weird their anchors are.

However, Spotify does not reveal the number of hikes in listener base and so experts are suggesting that it might be just a normal growth due to Spotify listeners base and its not a surge.

In a recent video posted on Rogans Instagram profile, Joe expresses his thoughts about the compilation of using the N-word that Arie posted was the most regretful and shameful thing that Ive ever had to talk about publicly. However, he said that it was taken out of context.

Joe further said, Its not my word to use. I am well aware of that now, but for years I used it in that manner, but he assured his intentions multiple times by saying I never used it to be racist because Im not racist.

In regard to his comments on the Covid situation, he said, this is so baffling to me, since he was a standup comedian and he talks on various topics on his show. He exclaimed, If youre taking vaccine advice from me, is that really my fault?

Surely, Rogan is quite frustrated with the political correctness and said, If you want my advice, dont take my advice. Notably, a lot of black music artists and even Neil Young are taking down their music from Spotify in protest of Rogans words.

Spotify has taken down more than 70 episodes of his podcast yet the controversy is on. Stay tuned to know more!

The problem with Netflix isn’t wokeness – TechRadar

If youve ventured onto the internet this past week, youll know that Netflix discourse is flavor of the month.

News of the companys massive subscriber losses has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with many including those on Wall Street heralding the end of Netflixs decade-long reign as the streaming service supreme.

Netflix itself has blamed the downturn on a handful of factors, including its failure (and subsequent need) to both crack down on password sharing and diversify its subscription packages in light of increased competition from rival platforms like Disney Plus and HBO Max but social media commentators have thrown their own reasoning into the mix.

According to some, Netflix has fallen victim to so-called wokeness or, in other words, a supposed over-commitment to politicized programming. Critics are bemoaning the streamers peddling of forced diversity, its fondness for social justice, and uniformly boring new movies and TV shows. As Tesla CEO (and new Twitter owner) Elon Musk put it in a recent tweet: The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable.

Naturally, Musks 83 million-plus Twitter followers responded in kind. At the time of writing, his tweet has garnered more than 300,000 likes, with many users echoing his criticism of the streamers obvious social and political agenda in a lengthy string of replies.

You mean you don't enjoy Viking shows where the biggest/baddest warrior is a woman (eye-roll -- no, those didn't actually exist); or horror films that turn out to be actually be social justice commentary; or shows that make 'cutesy' references to devil (Sabrina)?, one account replied sarcastically.

I have been waiting for this moment for a while. Every single thing on Netflix thats recent is just propaganda. Its unwatchable at this point, another wrote (of course, this roster of unwatchable new Netflix content must include its recent documentary on Musk and his space program, right?).

The point being, a fair few folk arent happy with Netflix and its uniquely politicized approach to modern storytelling. Even though it doesn't exist.

Lets be clear: Netflix does have a content problem. For starters, too many of its recent movies and TV series have been caught in the style over substance trap.

Genuinely interesting shows like Squid Game and Stranger Things have become outnumbered by melodramatic soap operas dressed up in HBO-quality clothing (looking at you, Anatomy of a Scandal), while many of the streamers recent movie offerings (consider the starry emptiness of Dont Look Up) have likewise failed to live up to their billing.

Netflix has also become a cesspit of mindless reality television. The relentless addition of series in the Sexy Beasts and Is It Cake? mold suggests the companys annual $14 billion content budget no longer provides the quality assurance we once thought it did. And to make matters worse, these trashy, overproduced game shows seem less likely to face the chopping block than many of the genuinely genre-pushing projects that Netflix occasionally strikes gold with (the likes of Archive 81, Sense8 and The OA have all fallen victim to the streamers now-infamous cancel culture in recent years).

Following news of the companys subscriber losses, CEO Ted Hastings did admit a need to improve the quality of the platforms programming a process that has already begun with the stripping back of several upcoming projects though Netflix has a long way to go if it hopes to compete with the IP-heavy offerings of its burgeoning competitors.

But none of the above is a consequence of wokeness. Is Netflix any more woke than Disney Plus or HBO Max? The latest Marvel movies and TV shows propping up the former have been equally lambasted by the same critics, while two of the most popular series on the latter Euphoria and Our Flag Means Death revolve around queer teens and gay pirates, respectively.

Heck, the most popular English-speaking Netflix show of all time, Bridgerton, is a standard bearer of wokeness if ever there was one (and the same goes for the equally brilliant Sex Education).

Its abundantly clear, then, that Netflix hasnt suffered because of a penchant for political correctness and even if it had, we wouldnt be seeing its biggest rivals profit from fishing in the same woke-filled pond.

Instead, the reasons behind Netflixs woes are much more obvious.

Just three years ago, the streamer stood alone as the world's foremost on-demand entertainment platform, with only Amazons Prime Video service for company (and, by extension, competition). In 2022, though, that competition has increased tenfold. The aggressive expansion of the IP-rich Disney Plus and HBO Max is well-documented the former is projected to overtake Netflix for subscriber numbers by 2024 but the likes of Apple TV Plus, Hulu, Showtime, and Paramount Plus have also begun to eat into Netflixs pie.

With such a wealth of options across the board, its no wonder that Netflix no longer boasts the same one-stop-shop appeal to subscribers as it once did. Consider the most talked-about TV shows of the past year: Squid Game and Bridgerton notwithstanding, the likes of Euphoria, Yellowjackets, The Mandalorian, Succession, and Severance have dominated the online conversation. Sure, Netflix still has its golden geese but the platform has never faced such high-quality competition in its decade-long stint as the streaming king.

Whats more, that competition heated up at the same time Netflix began flirting with unwelcome price increases for its customers across the globe. As the cost of living continues to rise and interest in streaming wanes following the steady lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, consumers have proven themselves unwilling to sit back and accept higher tariffs for lower-quality products.

Netflix has expressed an intention to mitigate these price increases by offering a wider range of subscription options which look set to include a cheaper, ad-supported tier akin to that which is already available on HBO Max but the internet has misread this strategy as yet more proof of the streamers fall from grace (If I see ads on Netflix I'm canceling, seems to be the current Twitter consensus).

For Netflix to recover its status, then, it will need to battle against factors beyond its control. The competition from rival streamers will only increase in the years to come, and company bosses must pull together an attractive range of bespoke subscription packages unlike any others available elsewhere to rebuild customers faith in the once-indomitable Netflix machine.

Yes, the platforms content must improve but it certainly doesnt need to become less woke.

Brain stimulating therapy gaining steam as depression treatment – ABC Action News Tampa Bay

TAMPA, Fla They say a picture is worth a thousand words but for Bay area nurse Telicia Schroeder, the difference between her "before and after photos" for TMS therapy can be summed up in about 20.

"I felt much better. I felt, I felt like 'wow. I actually have a drive to go for a walk in the neighborhood,'" she said.

Schroeder used TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy to treat her depression and PTSD.

"We've tried several different medications none of them were working, none of them were making me feel better, I didn't have good days at all," she said.

The FDA-approved therapy uses magnetic waves to stimulate a part of the frontal lobe, in 20-minute sessions, to help wake up the parts of your brain that help regulate your mood.

"We want to activate a 'sleepy brain' so you want to do it with consistency so we have a lasting effect over time," Dr. Khaled Borwarshi said.

Dr. Borwarshi is Schroeder's doctor and the founder of the Florida TMS Clinic in Wesley Chapel. He told ABC Action News that standard depression treatments don't work for a third of patients, but often they don't know about things like TMS.

"In my opinion, any psychiatric clinic they should have that option available," he said. "It's not informed consent for patients if you don't know your treatment options."

He added that since the pandemic started and more people began struggling with depression his practice has seen a rise in demand.

"My practice was at one treatment chair when we opened before the pandemic and now we have four treatment chairs," he said.

The treatment is typically done five days a week for six weeks and then tapered off. While every insurance provider has different rules on who qualifies for coverage, Schroeder advised looking into TMS, if you feel like you need it, is worth a try.

"It sounds like TMS therapy in some ways kind of gave you your life back. Is that fair to say?" ABC Action News reporter Rochelle Alleyne asked.

"Yes. Yeah I would say that's fair to say," Schroeder replied.

TMS, which has been approved by the FDA for its effective treatment of Major Depressive Disorder when other therapy methods haven't worked, has also shown positive outcomes in the treatment of other conditions, including Drug & Alcohol Addiction, Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Schizophrenia, and Migraine Headaches. The addition of TMS to Oro House's list of available treatments serves the facility's goal of treating underlying mental health issues in order to holistically and more effectively approach addiction recovery.

"At Oro House, we're always looking for new treatments to address our patients' needs," said Oro House Co-Founder Evan Haines. "We're incredibly proud to be the first and only rehab facility in Southern California to offer this particular cutting-edge TMS therapy in-house, harnessing state-of-the-art "theta-burst" technology developed by a Danish company named MagVenture that's ten times faster than what most facilities are able to offer."

Since gaining FDA approval in 2008, TMS Therapy has become available at facilities nationwide; however, in most cases, the sessions take up to 40 minutes to complete and require several sessions a week. With Oro House's state-of-the-art MagVenture Theta Burst TMS Machine, which received FDA clearance in 2018, the typical therapy session lasts only three minutes.

By taking advantage of the latest, most efficient technology, Oro House is able to offer more comfortable and more effective treatment than most other facilities and by offering the service in-house, Oro House's TMS treatment is ultra-convenient for the centers' patients.

A list of baseline questions about TMS are answered below:

Oro House's team of medical experts treats each patient as an individual, assessing their specific addiction and mental health needs and mapping out a plan accordingly. TMS Therapy is the newest of Oro House's several comprehensive dual-diagnosis therapies, including medication assisted treatment; trauma-informed cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy; holistic-based therapy; psychodynamic therapy; and more.

Named the #1 rehab facility in California by Newsweek and Statista, Oro House is also newly in-network with Anthem Blue Cross at their LA locations, making TMS and other treatments accessible to a significant number of prospective clients, as well as to members of the general public who are not otherwise clients of Oro House.

Team Tests Model to Enable More Effective Targeting of Non-Invasive TMS Treatments in Depression – Brain & Behavior Research Foundation |

TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation used to treat depression, has shown its ability to reduce symptoms in many thousands of patients in the years since its approval by the FDA in 2009. TMS is sometimes recommended when a patient doesn't respond to antidepressant drug therapy, although it can also be used as a first-line therapy. Like all anti-depressant therapies, it is more effective for some patients than others.

In recent years, a number of researchers have aimed to discover ways of more precisely targeting TMS to achieve greater efficacy. This research has been inspired, among other things, by evidence indicating that the stimulation delivered in conventional TMS treatments likely affects areas of the brain beyond the area immediately targeted. Indeed, some of the beneficial effects of TMS may depend on such "off-target" effects.

Now, Nicholas L. Balderston, Ph.D., a 2021 BBRF Klerman Prize winner and 2018 BBRF Young Investigator, and a team at the University of Pennsylvania have reported results of a proof-of-concept test of a new method of targeting TMS. The team's senior member was Yvette I. Sheline, M.D., a member of BBRF's Scientific Council and a 2005 and 2002 BBRF Independent Investigator and 1998 Young Investigator.

Drs. Balderston, Sheline and colleagues developed a sophisticated model intended to predict the impact of TMS therapy in specific patients under specific treatment conditions. The aim is to use the model, if validated, to find the best spot in the brain to target and deliver TMS in a given patient, in order to achieve maximum reduction in depression symptoms.

The math-based model, which reflects data about neural connectivity and electric fields in the brain, seeks to calculate the relationship between symptoms and connectivity in each depressed patient, as well as the expected effect of TMS upon connectivity.

The model is built upon data about neural connectivity gathered from across the brain in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) scans in depressed individuals. This data generates an initial prediction about the impact of TMS treatments. This is then "augmented" by information about the distribution of electric fields across the cortex, reflecting different targeting sites and different orientations of the equipment delivering TMS stimulation relative to these targets.

The team's model was tested at two broad TMS target areas, one in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the other in the motor cortex. The left DLPFC is a standard stimulation target in TMS; the motor cortex is not a therapeutic target and was used as a control.

The model was applied to data drawn from a patient cohort composed of 91 "anxious misery" (AM) patients, among whom were individuals with several psychiatric diagnoses including depression (50), anxiety (26) and PTSD (17). The cohort also included 25 healthy controls. The typical study subject was about 29 years old. The test did not involve delivering TMS treatments, but rather predicting the impact of such treatment on each member of the cohort, using a database that included results of two functional MRI scan sessions that each received. These scanning sessions yielded structural diffusion, resting-state, and task-based data for each individual.

When applied, the team's model predicted that TMS stimulation targeting the DLPFC would lead to significant reduction in depression symptoms in the AM patients in the cohort, but not in controls. This reflects what prior clinical experience has clearly established. Further, the model could predict the magnitude of the anticipated therapeutic effect in each individual, as reflected in standard scores used to clinically assess depression. Importantly, the model predicted that symptom reductions would vary in individuals in a predictable way relative to the exact location of the site targeted within the DLPFC and the orientation of the equipment delivering the stimulation relative to the target.

The team found that the model worked at the level of individual participants as well as the entire group, which suggested to them that their approach "has the ability to identify subject-specific TMS targets to maximize symptom reduction."

One factor that may have contributed to the predictive ability of their model, the team said, is their incorporation of "whole-brain" functional connectivity data. This may help the model register the fact that changes in functional connectivity in the brain following TMS treatment for depression "can be seen throughout the brain in regions that are important for affective responding." Such regions include the insula and the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). Evidence of this suggests that TMS's "net effects on symptoms may be driven by these large-scale network connectivity changes."

The team suggested that if validated, their data-driven targeting approach might be used not only to individualize targeting of TMS at the level of individual patients, "but could potentially be extended to individualize targeting at the single-session level, where each TMS session in a course of treatment is targeted at a specific symptom or set of symptoms, thereby maximizing therapeutic effect."

Drs. Balderston, Sheline and colleagues were careful to note the main weakness of their study: it did not involve actually administering TMS to patients and measuring pre-/post-treatment changes in symptoms. But with publication of their findings in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, they expressed the hope that other researchers will now test the predictions generated by their model in actual patients in clinical research settings.

The team also included: Desmond J. Oathes, Ph.D., 2016 BBRF Young Investigator; and Zhi-De Deng, Ph.D., 2017 BBRF Young Investigator.

Mental Health Startup Journey Colab Aims To Develop Mescaline As An FDA-Approved Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder – Forbes

Mescaline molecule, a natural hallucinogenic substance present in the flesh of several cacti, 3D ... [+] illustration

Pushed to the periphery of public awareness during Covid-19 pandemic, the disease of substance addiction continues to ravage humanity. Substance abuse deaths are often deaths of despair, as addiction is a brain disease that is often coincident with other mental illnesses, such as anxiety and depression. The need for new ways to treat substance use disorder has never been greater, yet medicine possesses few pharmacological tools with which to combat this pernicious disease. In addition to the burgeoning opioid epidemic, addiction to alcohol has been increasing, driven in part by the stresses of pandemic life and by the economic disparities made worse in the wake of Covid-19.

The treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD), in particular, has limited pharmaceutical options with which to augment non-pharmacological therapies. Among the few drugs approved in the US for treatment of AUD, disulfiram, green-lit by the FDA in 1949, causes patients to experience swift and powerful hangover symptoms if they consume alcohol, thereby acting as a deterrent. More recently-approved naltrexone blunts the pleasure derived from alcohol consumption, while acamprosate helps to protect against the neurotoxicity that can occur during alcohol withdrawal. While these pharmaceuticals can be used to treat AUD, each has limitations and drawbacks. There is therefore a high unmet medical need for additional FDA-approved therapeutics targeting this disease.

After decades of neglect by the scientific community, a renaissance is occurring in the study of entheogens in the treatment of mental health disorders, with the goal of developing approved therapeutics. An entheogen is a psychoactive substance that has been historically used in spiritual contexts. For millennia, societies have used entheogens to improve their members well-being. Since many effective therapeutics, including the heart drug digoxin and the anti-malarial artemisinin, have been derived from traditional medicines, there is interest in exploring entheogens to treat mental illnesses. Among the sources of these psychoactive substances is peyote, which has been used by Native Americans for thousands of years. Apache, Huichol, Utes, Comanche, and Navajo peoples are among the current heirs of peyotes ancient discoverers and stewards of its spiritual and medicinal uses.

Journey Colab, a California biopharma startup, leads the effort to develop an FDA-approved form of mescaline, a psychoactive molecule that occurs naturally in peyote, as a therapeutic to assist with the treatment of AUD. Cognizant of the traditional discoverers of this potential therapeutic, this company, in an arrangement that is to my knowledge unique among biopharma startups, set aside a 10% equity stake to benefit traditional peyote stewards and the AUD treatment communities. I spoke with Journey Colabs founder and CEO, Jeeshan Chowdhury, its acting COO and CLO, Rebecca Lee, indigenous rights activist, impact advisor and trustee Sutton King, and addiction expert and recently-appointed scientific advisor Kelly J. Clark about the companys goals, genesis, and unique structure.

The prevalence of alcohol use disorder has increased during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Louis Metzger: Why is Journey Colab developing mescaline for AUD?

Jeeshan Chowdhury: Mescaline is very interesting relative to other psychedelics because it has a relatively long duration (10-12 hours). The extended experience allows people to navigate core traumas in a way that other psychedelics don't. Mescaline may give people more of an opportunity for extended neuroplasticity, which allows them to make the most of talk therapy and community support as part of holistic therapy for AUD. Despite the medical worlds best efforts, conventional therapies for AUD have yielded abysmal rates of durable remission and harm reduction. We have very clear observations that mescaline, when combined with therapy and community support, is incredibly powerful at alleviating suffering from this disease.

Metzger: Kelly, youve recently joined Journeys scientific advisory board. What drew you to Journey Colabs approach?

Kelly J. Clark: I was pleased to see that Journey Colab is approaching the development of mescaline for AUD treatment in a way thats evidence-based, with appropriately designed clinical trials. AUD is an underserved disease and has suffered from addiction treatment being largely segregated from the rest of medicine. I see mescaline as having the potential to assist psychotherapy by enabling acute episodes of care within a chronic care paradigm. The medical community and regulators are moving toward measuring addiction treatment outcomes in terms of harm reduction and functioning, rather than utter abstinence. Journeys work is part of that paradigm shift.

Metzger: Jeeshan, what inspired you to found Journey Colab and to create its unusual ownership structure?

Chowdhury: I never thought that I would start a psychedelic drug company. I'm very much a product of two things: First, coming from a conservative Muslim family, where there's a very strict conservative view on substances; and second, being a child of the 1980s from Canada with its war on drugs. I grew up thinking that psychedelics would fry your brain.

I founded this company through my own mental health journey. From the outside, my life looked great. I became a physician and was subsequently a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where I earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in health informatics. Later, much to the chagrin of my immigrant parents, I dropped out of medical residency to come to San Francisco to participate in a startup incubator program called Y Combinator. My first company was ListRunner, a digital health startup that was acquired by Commure through its expansion.

Everything looked great from the outside, but I always felt like I was drowning in my mental health problems. I sought out care, the best that we had available at the time antidepressants and talk therapy. These helped, but to a limited extent. It was like having a life preserver to keep my head above water, but these therapies didnt get me out of my immersion in depression.

I came to psychedelic medicine out of desperation for something that would work after trying so many things that didn't improve my mental wellness in a transformative way. Psychedelic therapy enabled me to see maladaptive patterns that had formed since childhood, and in combination with talk therapy, enabled me to change them. It also helped to catalyze my understanding of how these patterns arose. Psychedelic therapy completely saved my life.

I have been on both ends of the stethoscope and have seen that there are people suffering from mental illnesses, including AUD, far more intensely than I had. I realized that we don't have adequate tools with which to help many of them. I took the California Institute of Integral Studies course on psychedelic training and research. On this learning journey, I met Sam Altman (board member of Journey Colab). Together we realized that not only do we need to advance psychedelic therapy, particularly around addictions, but we need to do it in the right way. If we take psychedelic medicine and just put it into an existing system that does not serve us well, we will not get transformational results. Thats why we set up Journey Colab as a stakeholder model, where 10% of the founding equity is set aside in reciprocity to give back to the communities where psychedelic use originated and to help the therapist and community partners with whom were working.

Metzger: How is Journey Colab learning from these traditional users of mescaline?

Chowdhury: We are creating a space of trust and dialogue in our consultation process to apply what we learn from traditional mescaline users to clinical and scientific methods. We aim to create a clinical protocol that is accessible to people where they are. We are making something new that fits into a clinical environment, and we are ensuring that we share the value that is created from this dialogue with these communities.

Metzger: Can you tell me more about how this sharing of equity is structured?

Rebecca Lee: We created a perpetual purpose trust that holds 10% of our founding equity. It's different from more familiar forms of trust because instead of naming a particular person or entity as the beneficiary, the beneficiary is a defined purpose in this case, the purpose of the Journey Reciprocity Trust is to share the value created by the company with Indigenous communities that have traditionally used psychedelic medicine, with groups that are working on the conservation of the organisms producing naturally occurring psychedelics (because so many of theses are threatened due to environmental degradation and over-harvesting), with the therapists who will be delivering this care, with other nonprofit psychedelic partners in the space, and with communities that are under-served by mental healthcare. We wanted to share this sort of co-founder ownership of Journey Colab with our stakeholder community. The trust will be led by an independent stewardship committee of five members, who will each represent the beneficiary communities. One of the seats will be filled by Sutton King, a powerful advocate for Native Americans, a descendant of Wisconsins Menominee and Oneida Nations, and Journey Colabs founding Head of Impact. Sutton has spent her whole life advocating for underserved communities.

Metzger: Sutton, as impact advisor and trustee at Journey Colab, in what ways do you envision the trust impacting indigenous communities? What is the type of impact you would like to see?

Sutton King: The Journey Reciprocity Trust represents a principle that is central to my identity as an Afro-Indigenous woman: the Seventh-Generation Principle. This Haudenosaunee philosophy inherited from my people holds that our decisions today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future. The Journey Reciprocity Trust embodies this principle by sharing the success of Journey Colab with stakeholders far into the future, supporting equitable access to mental health services, and ensuring the protection of sacred plant medicines. Indigenous-led, the trust emphasizes the importance and validity of Indigenous voices and their autonomy to make decisions. Such voices are oftentimes excluded and alienated. We cannot use the medicines that Indigenous cultures have protected without valuing Indigenous ways of being and thinking. The trust has the ability to support Indigenous communities with the economic investment necessary to continue strengthening sovereignty and the preservation of culture and land. Through centering access and benefit-sharing, the trust has an opportunity to redistribute wealth in a way that respects the plight of Indigenous peoples and begins using money as a tool for restorative healing.

The conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Mental Health Startup Journey Colab Aims To Develop Mescaline As An FDA-Approved Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder - Forbes

Breaking down the decrim movement: Discoveries, doubts and personal ins & outs – Aspen Daily News

In her youth, Martha Hammel suffered from severe anorexia, anxiety and suicidality. One chance encounter with psilocybin mushrooms changed everything.

She recalls being in an outdoor atmosphere sitting on blankets with a small group of friends. Soft music played in the background. She and her peers had researched the correct way to engage with the psychedelic compound and designated a sitter the term to describe a sober person who assists others under the influence of psychedelic drugs to accompany their trip.

At the time, Hammel had never drunk alcohol, consumed marijuana nor smoked a cigarette. Eating the entheogenic fungi was her first intake of any sort of mood- or mind-altering substance. And it was done mindfully and respectfully, Hammel said: It was done well.

In that experience, I felt the eating disorder lift, and this anxiety that had been weighing me down for my entire life and this self-hatred intention I had been feeling, it all lifted, Hammel said. And I distinctly remember experiencing this thought of, I dont need that anymore. And it stayed gone.

It would be years before Hammel tried psilocybin mushrooms again, because the initial encounter was such a relief, she said.

Psilocybin is the naturally occurring psychedelic compound produced by more than 200 species of mushrooms. It is among chemicals such as ayahuasca, mescaline, LSD and ibogaine, known as entheogens. Commonly interchanged with the term psychedelics, entheogens refer to a psychoactive substance derived primarily from plant sources when it is used for its religious or spiritual effects.

Entheogenic plants and fungi have been used by humans in indigenous and religious rituals for centuries. These compounds trigger non-ordinary states of consciousness which often include hallucinogenic effects and if exercised in a safe set and setting, Hammel explains, they can produce therapeutic outcomes.

In just a three-hour time span, I found my way out its really powerful medicine, Hammel said. It was actually the moment I decided to become a nutritionist; I had this realization that I wanted to help other women with eating disorders.

Hammel is now a certified nutrition specialist, natural food chef, addiction recovery coach and psychedelic integration coach. She earned a masters degree in nutrition and integrative health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and has undergone advanced training programs for mindfulness-based psychedelic therapy and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

She spends her time between Aspen and Boulder, where she is the nutritionist and guide at the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness one of the first legal psychedelic therapy clinics to operate in North America that offers services in cannabis- and ketamine-assisted therapies.

These plant medicines, they can be profoundly healing in so many more ways than you could ever see possible, Hammel said. And to discount the power of that big experience is dangerous.

From healing her mental health to shaping her career, Hammel commends the power of her own big experience with plant medicines years ago. She has become a prominent voice in psychedelic activism and education across all of Colorado, and right now, her efforts are honed in on Aspen.

Hammel is the lead campaign manager for Right To Heal Aspen, the citizen-led initiative seeking to decriminalize plant medicines within the city of Aspen for therapeutic use.

Following a yearlong collaborative process involving community members, city council members, attorneys and experts in the field of psychedelics, Hammel and fellow representatives Isaac Flanagan and Laura Betti recently presented a citizen-initiated ordinance and petition regarding therapeutic access to plant medicines and the decriminalization of these compounds in the city of Aspen.

On Tuesday, April 12, Aspen City Clerk Nicole Henning officially approved the proposed petition as submitted. According to her acceptance letter, the petition proponents have 180 days to circulate the petitions following the clerks approval. The letter also notes that 925 signatures of city electors will be required to place this matter on the ballot. Hammel said she aims to collect signatures from 1,500 Aspen voters.

With the petition hitting the ground running, Aspen may be the next city to hop on the psychedelic train.

Renewed scientific interest and clinical research involving psychedelic medicine has gained traction in recent years. In turn, a number of U.S. cities and states are revising their legal frameworks around these drugs.

Denver was the first city to decriminalize psilocybin in 2019, followed by similar initiatives surrounding entheogenic plants and fungi in Washington, D.C.; Oakland and Santa Cruz, California; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Seattle, Washington which became the largest city to decriminalize noncommercial activity around psychedelic substances and Detroit.

On the state level, Oregon was the first to legalize psilocybin-assisted therapy and decriminalize the personal possession of such compounds in November 2020. In Colorado, advocates are pushing to get a statewide decrim initiative on the upcoming November ballot. At the same time, Sen. Joann Ginal and Rep. Alex Valdez, both Democrats, are sponsoring a new bill that would create a panel to study plant medicines in mental health treatment.

Whether it be state lawmakers proposing the formation of working groups for research on these compounds or local governments taking steps to enlist the personal use and possession of entheogenic plants among the lowest law enforcement priorities, America has entered an era of psychedelic drug reform, and its only on the rise.

The Aspen movement was spurred just over a year ago in a city council meeting when Councilmember Skippy Mesirow introduced the idea of psychedelic-assisted therapies as a healing modality amid the communitys mental health crisis.

Pictured is a hut located at the Soltara Healing Center in Costa Rica. Skippy Mesirow experienced his first and second ayahuasca ceremonies within this hut.

It was an offhand comment that I think we should be looking at bringing these incredibly beneficial compounds of healing to our community that is struggling with issues of mental health, suicidality, substance abuse and disconnection, Mesirow said. I expected to get laughed at, and surprisingly, my colleagues were really receptive.

Like Hammel, Mesirows passion and support for the initiative stems from his own life-altering experience with entheogenic plants. Having long suffered from acute and chronic anxiety, Mesirow said he tried out different healing modalities for 15 years.

Three years ago, Mesirow embarked on a weeklong retreat in Costa Rica at the Soltara Healing Center, where he engaged in an ayahuasca ceremony. Ayahuasca which can induce a much more intense experience than mushrooms, Hammel explained is an herbal brew that has been used for ritual and healing purposes since pre-Columbian times.

The ceremonial concoction originated in the Shipibo tribe tradition out of the Amazons Peruvian region. Through a series of ceremonies followed by integration, many Western facilitators understand ayahuasca to clear and cleanse past traumas, to put the entheogen in simple terms.

Mesirow explained that while he did not necessarily uncover a clear answer to the root of his anxiety during the first ceremonies, it was the post-integration work that allowed him to hold onto those learnings, and unknowingly, he had created the environment to answer the question for himself.

The moment you set the intention to work with these plants, they begin to work on you, Mesirow said. But the substances are not the answer in of themselves; theyre a tool or the gateway its the setting, the safety and the integration that allows for them to change lives.

A year later, Mesirow returned to the same retreat in Costa Rica for his second ayahuasca experience, where his intention at that point was to put eyes on his childhood.

He describes this go-around as walking through the Great Library of Alexandria of his own mind, recalling memories that he had blocked out before the age of 13. In this second series of ceremonies, Mesirow said he experienced terrifying moments, followed by a distinct feeling of singularity, in which he said he understood everything he needed to heal.

I may have gotten to where I am now in terms of my well-being without that experience, Mesirow said. But, for me, its been very central to my own healing development it changed my life profoundly.

After Mesirow planted the psychedelic-healing seed at a council meeting last year, council held two public work sessions on the topic. Mesirow brought in neuroscientists, psychiatrists and drug reform activists from all over the country to educate council members on these compounds.

In building this network, one of the organizations Mesirow reached out to was the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness in Boulder, where he connected with Hammel and brought her on board.

A patient undergoes a psychedelic-assisted therapy treatment at the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness in Boulder.

During a council work session held last May, it was apparent not all members were sold on the decrim movement. While there was interest, Mesirow said his colleagues were unsure if council was the right body to be putting this forward. The matter was turned over to Aspen citizens.

We put out the ask to our community to see who would be interested, and it was a huge amount of energy that showed up more than Id ever seen on any other topic, Mesirow said.

Spearheaded by Mesirow and Hammel, the Psychedelic Task Force formed at the start of summer 2021. The working group made up of about 30 community members including Roaring Fork residents outside of Pitkin County met twice a month at the Here House Club in Aspen over the course of eight months.

We opened the first meeting by discussing why we were there, and almost everyone in the room had had their lives saved in some capacity by plant medicines, Hammel said. So there was this deep sense of respect for the medicines, and we wanted to really look at: What is therapeutic use?

Mesirow emphasized the groups focus on therapeutic use, stating that this is the first attempt in the nation a municipal legislation around this movement has been so heavily grounded in the therapeutic and healing benefits of these compounds, he said.

The group came together with a very clear why we have one of the highest suicide rates, substance abuse problems and severe cases of depression and anxiety, Mesirow said. These compounds are showing the most profound ability to mediate, heal and in some instances cure those things plaguing our community.

Another significant discussion Hammel recalls emerging early on in the task force meetings had to do with whether they were looking to decriminalize just psilocybin or all plant medicines.

The thing that we kept coming back to was nobody should ever get arrested for possessing or eating a plant ever, Hammel said.

Through working with activists nationwide and analyzing the language of the Denver petition that led to the capital citys ballot passage three years ago, the local task force crafted a proposed legislation. After undergoing changes and tweaks, the initiated ordinance and petition was finalized in early April and is now circulating in the community. The final version and details on the legislation can be accessed through the Right To Heal Aspen website.

The initiatives three-step framework is rooted in a model Mesirow calls The 5 Ss of Psychedelic Success: screening, set, setting, support and sanctity.

If passed upon voter approval, the ordinance will first establish a six-month advisory committee to develop educational strategies to enable the safe, therapeutic access to plant medicines by adults defined in the document as an individual 21 years of age or older.

Six months after the effective date of the ordinance, plant medicines would then be decriminalized in the city of Aspen. According to the legislation, plant medicines include ayahuasca, ibogaine, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), psilocybin, psilocin and mescaline excluding peyote.

Mayor Torre said that while he supports people using plant-based therapies and is all for the petition process in its intention and essence, he believes the ordinance as drafted could still be improved and hes weary about some of the language.

There should be no mistaking the true intention here, and that true intention is therapeutic use, Torre said. The language that decriminalizes it or deprioritizes it was not language that I thought shouldve been in this ordinance.

Torre also said he thinks the six-month advisory committee should go into effect before the actual ordinance, rather than post-approval, emphasizing that there is more educational work to be done in the community prior to the ordinance potentially passing.

One message that needs to be clear is that there is a difference between using any of these substances recreationally versus therapeutically, there is a difference, Torre said. Simply getting some mushrooms and taking them does not always mean that youre going to be using them positively or effectively for yourself.

Aspen School District Board of Education President Katy Frisch expressed concerns on exactly that point when it comes to the youth community.

Im super nervous about having another substance more accessible to kids, Frisch said. No matter what the ballot language is, theres a lot of possible ways that kids will get their hands on this stuff and wont use it in the right way.

Though the school board has not yet held a meeting to discuss Aspens decriminalization initiative, Frisch anticipates this matter as something they will have to deal with which takes more time away from academics to talk about and implement training around yet another substance that is illegal for kids, and illegal for a reason, she said.

Ive already spoken to admin about if something like this passes, we need to think about what well do from an educational perspective for students and staff, Frisch said. A teacher can probably tell if a student is drunk in class, I dont know whether theyre going to be able to tell if a student has taken this sort of drug.

Frisch said she understands why people support the use of plant medicines for mental health issues among adults, but looking at this from the perspective of how access may impact younger community members, she fears the already appalling drug-use levels will worsen.

I can tell you right now, our self-reported numbers for kids drug and alcohol use are extremely high relative to other parts of the country and even the state, she said. We have a huge substance abuse problem here, and the availability of psychedelic drugs is a big question mark for me.

The psychedelic reform movement elicits many question marks from myriad research fields to the legal and political arenas.

As decriminalization efforts meet success in cities around the country, it is worth noting that psilocybin and other psychedelic drugs are still illegal in those jurisdictions under state law. The term decriminalize is technically inaccurate, according to the psychedelic drug policy reform tracker. Rather, local governments have taken steps to deprioritize enforcing criminal penalties on the city level, and these municipal reforms are progressing in different ways based on different cities motives.

With Aspens focus on therapeutic use, the ordinance language around its decrim initiative involves protecting the use of these plant medicines for therapy by deprioritizing the imposition of criminal penalties on adults for therapeutic use.

According to the proposed legislation, therapeutic use includes the possession, storage, planting, cultivating, transporting and noncommercial sharing of these compounds. This does not include the sale of plant medicines for remuneration. Meaning, unlike marijuana, psychedelics would not be displayed publicly nor sold in stores.

To further support that decrim factor, the Aspen ordinance would prohibit all departments, agencies, boards, commissioners, officers and employees of the city of Aspen from using city resources to assist in the enforcement of criminal penalties on adults for therapeutic use of these plant medicines.

Ninth Judicial Chief Deputy District Attorney Don Nottingham said that if this ordinance were to pass in Aspen, not one thing would change in his jurisdiction. Psychedelics like marijuana are still federally illegal, he said, and from his point of view, they would remain illegal.

Aspen can decriminalize all they want, Nottingham said jokingly. My job is to follow state laws, not city laws.

Nottingham did throw in a comment that of all the substance-use related cases that come to the 9th Judicial District Attorneys Office serving Pitkin, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties a very small percentage of those cases involve psilocybin mushrooms.

Like cannabis, psilocybin is considered a Schedule I drug which the United States Drug Enforcement Administration defines as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential of abuse.

Signed into law by former President Richard Nixon, the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) of 1970 established this legal framework in efforts to categorize drugs into five schedules based on their medical application and the drugs abuse or dependence potential. According to the legislation, Schedule I drugs are considered to have the highest potential for abuse and the potential to create psychological and/or physical dependence.

The CSA was a precursor to Nixons War on Drugs, which he proclaimed in 1971, followed by other federal funding for drug-control agencies, such as the Drug Enforcement Agency, and strict drug crime measures under the Nixon administration.

In the two decades prior to the War on Drugs which has been largely condemned as a political campaign motivated by racist ideology rather than medical reasons by many social advocacy nonprofits and academics psychedelic research was rampant, and culture followed suit.

The early 1950s saw breakthrough studies on the therapeutic potential of LSD, for instance. Due to the growing anti-drug legislature, these studies were short lived. By the late 1960s, psychedelic research had halted with only hippy counterculture left in its place.

Thoryn Stephens grew up in San Francisco chasing Grateful Dead concerts and Hunter S. Thompsons lore. While plant medicines were an integral part of his life from a young age, Stephens relationship with the compounds changed after a ceremonial experience involving mescaline (peyote) in the upper Amazon jungles of Ecuador.

Fascinated and inspired, Stephens started ordering plant materials from all over the world, studying and extracting these compounds to understand their nature.

I really began to understand the power of these plants as tools, essentially for us as humans, Stephens said. And thats really what drove me to be really interested in science: molecular biology and biotechnology.

Stephens who now lives in Aspen and was a part of the Psychedelic Task Force is the founder and CEO of the newly launched software company, Eve Health Systems. The digital platform uses data to drive measurement-based care involving mental-behavioral health, which includes case management and data analysis of legal psychedelic therapy and studies.

Connected to plant medicines on a professional, scientific and spiritual level, Stephens is well versed in the nationwide research efforts around these compounds. He mentioned the movement with ketamine-assisted therapies in helping veterans, explaining how many companies are in the process of stewarding different psychedelic drugs through clinical trials. MDMA is in phase three trials for post traumatic stress disorder therapies, Stephens adds, and psilocybin is in phase two trials for multiple indications, including depression, alcohol use disorder and anorexia nervosa.

While it could take years of research and clinical trials to prove any potential efficacies of these plant medicines, many are sold on the anecdotal evidence from their own personal experiences.

Seven years ago, Jim Harris was at a music festival in California. He was in his ninth month of recovery following a snowkite accident on the Patagonian Icecap, where he was paralyzed from the waist down. Given the state of his spine, Harris was not able to stand without a walker on the outdoor field where the festival took place his knees would ache and lock out, and he could not lift up his right foot due to his hamstring and glute lacking functionality.

Harris said his friends were getting loose with booze, but at that point, even a small amount of alcohol would have made it difficult for him to be mobile. He ate half of a small chocolate square containing psilocybin mushrooms.

Jim Harris during his journey to recovery following an accident that paralyzed him waist down. Harris, who is now a printmaker living in Carbondale, once made a living as a mountain guide and photographer.

Harris remembers leaning on his walker in the big-open field with his group of friends, about 100 yards from the stage. He recalls admiring the pink cotton candy patterns in the clouds, feeling slightly stoned in the cannabis sense when all of a sudden, he realized that he was able to pick his right foot up off the ground.

Muscles that hadnt worked in nine months since my accident began firing, Harris said. Through the psychedelic state, some part of my brain was tasked with something it hadnt been.

While the experience did not magically fix the injury, Harris said, that one muscle activation persisted and the recruitment of the nerve pathway stayed, which was a major progression for his walking functionality.

Two months ago, Harris attended a conference on psychedelics and chronic pain. One of the researchers brought up the potential for psychedelics among spinal cord injuries. Harris said he was immediately taken back to the moment at the music festival seven years ago.

Right now, there is a lot of focus in the medical world on different psychiatric uses, and my hunch is, it seems there will be emerging interest in psychedelics and pain management, especially neuropathic pain and phantom pains people have from different nerve damage, Harris said. Psychedelics seem like they have promise to rewire some of that pain reception.
