Preplys Daniele Saccardi offers insight into the technological evolution of language learning

Once upon a time, screens acted as cold separations from the warmth of other people. However, they have now become an integral part of our daily lives that offer us the chance toconnect with people that we otherwise would not have. The arrival of Covid-19 also saw anincrease in the usage of video platforms as educational tools. Children attended school fromtheir living rooms and students completed degrees from their beds.

Language learning especially has benefited from the transition to digital platforms in a waythat other subjects have not. Online video software has provided a platform for people in theUK to access native speakers as far away as Japan. Distance is no longer an object inaccessing native speakers of a learners target language.

Ukrainian startup Preply has wagered a considerable amount of time on the development oftheir own digital platform to teach languages and its paying off, with the companyexperiencing considerable growth.

We spoke with Preplys Campaign Manager, Daniele Saccardi, about how the languagelearning sector has evolved in the past decade and how the pandemic has influenced thetransition to digital learning:

Learning a language used to be all about memorising vocabulary and understandinggrammatical theory. However the world has adapted to a new communicative approach, emphasising the importance of being able to express oneself and share information in thetarget language. Not only is this approach more practical, as it allows the learner to beginspoken practice immediately, it is also beneficial for improving confidence, motivation andmemorisation.

Language learning technology has evolved to adapt to this communicative approach and fitinto an ever shrinking world. Far from the days of Software DVDs that we used in the earlypart of the century, we now have access to a variety of digital tools, such as mobileapplications and video conferencing platforms. The requirement to remain at home duringthe Covid-19 pandemic led to an increase in the usage of these conferencing platforms andopened up opportunities for students despite their geographical locations. Although I believethat we would have begun to rely more on technology in education, the pandemic definitelyacted as a catalyst to trigger this transition sooner.

Apps, such as Memrise and Anki, focus on providing students with key vocabulary by turningmemorisation into a game. These applications make great support tools to complementmore formal learning but can also be used as stand alone platforms to learn the basics. Some of the downfalls of these applications are dehumanisation and a lack of deeperunderstanding due to their surface level approach. Technology can only take us so far beforeassistance from native speakers is needed. Without communicating with native speakers, learners also miss out on learning colloquialisms and culture. What Preply does is bringtogether technological advances with humans, in order to bridge the disconnect between thetwo and to provide a more comprehensive and personal learning experience. Our tutors arewell versed in the merging of these two faces of language learning, allowing them to focuson building a connection with their students and tailoring the teaching to their particularneeds.

The future of language learning technology looks bright and it is worth watching this space

for advances in AI technologies. At the moment, AI is limited to spaced repetition, meaningthat the same word is repeated at regular intervals to improve memorisation. However, thereare endless possibilities to how AI can be integrated into language learning technologies inorder to improve the user experience. One such suggestion that I am aware of is the use ofchatbots that respond to your messages with personalised responses and can even providefeedback on your performance. Although this is convenient and can provide learners withmore confidence to make mistakes without being judged, I still strongly believe thatconversations with native speakers cannot be replaced due to the cultural underpinning oflanguage learning.

At Preply, we understand that each student has different requirements and so we usetechnology to complement and assist our teaching to varying extents depending on thestudent. The increased use of video conferencing platforms has opened up the world toopportunities beyond the classroom and we are proud to be a part of the ever evolvingtransition to hybrid learning.

Empire of steel: Where Japan’s railways stand after 150 years of evolution – The Japan Times

In one of the more lavish ceremonies of 19th-century Japan, a teenage Emperor Meiji arrived at Shimbashi in the new imperial capital of Tokyo and embarked on something entirely unprecedented for the nation: a passenger train.

On Oct. 14, 1872, the emperor opened a railway line between Shimbashi and Yokohama, a transformative miracle in an era when transport was mostly horse-drawn carriages, horseback and rickshaws.

Scottie Barnes evolution may be gradual, but it is essential for Raptors – The Athletic

EDMONTON With a crowd of almost 7,000 fans in attendance, Scottie Barnes saunters onto the court at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, home to a Raptors intrasquad scrimmage. While most of his teammates sprinted in when they were introduced, trying to keep the energy up, Barnes wont be rushed. He lifts his right arm and points to one end of the arena, lifts his left and points to the other. Hes a showman. He loves this stuff. After the scrimmage, flanked by Shelby Weaver, Raptors director of basketball operations and culture, Barnes is the last player out with the fans, signing autographs while practically encircled.

A day earlier, its just him, O.G. Anunoby and assistant coach Earl Watson on the far end of the gym at the University of Victoria. Even while dealing with an injured finger for most of the season, Anunoby hit 69 above-the-break 3-pointers in 48 games last season. In his rookie of the year campaign, Barnes hit 36 in 74 games. Aside from one hot stretch in the first half of the season, Barnes wasnt much of a factor from deep, and defences routinely sagged off him. Yet, as the two sturdy swingmen launch 3s from the elbow, its hard to tell which guy is the established 3-and-D practitioner and which one is the prodigious talent who critics worried would never develop his jumper.

Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo Drives The Renewable Energy Agenda With Record Turnout Of Africa’s Transport Sector – Africa.com

Bridging the gap between transport and energy sectors by reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and investing in cleaner modes of transport is critical for the creation of safer and more sustainable cities in Africa. This is according to private and public stakeholders from the continent and beyond who gathered at industry eventTransport Evolution Africa Forum & Expoin Durban last week to explore opportunities to connect Africas transport system through sustainable infrastructure.

Celebrating its 10thyear, the trade show has established itself as Africas largest transport event, hosting the regions port, rail and road authorities all under one roof.

TheTransport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo2022was opened by Ms. Fikile Sithole, Deputy Director General: Transportation Services, KZN Provincial Government, and attracted big industry game changers, like Transnet, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC), Briggeman International, Afreximbank and Dube Tradeport. The event welcomed over 2,350 people over the two-day period and included over 100 exhibitors who showcased innovative solutions across the transport industry.

Co-located with The Big 5 Construct KZN, as well as several other events including the Women in Transport Awards and The Transport CEO forum, it successfully gave visitors access to the entire African Transport Infrastructure value chain. In addition, the strategic transport forum tackled African Continental Free Trade Area implementation, infrastructure, investments and cross border policies head on, while the B2B networking platform and exhibition gave solution providers the opportunity to showcase their global innovations and products.

Highlighting the transport sectors contribution of almost one quarter to total global greenhouse gas emissions,Yaa Agyare-Dwomoh, Consultant at Frost & Sullivan Africasaid that in South Africa, over 60% of South Africas 1.2 million vehicles on the road are diesel-powered, with the remaining powered by petrol. To achieve the energy transformation required for decarbonisation, she suggested the sector would need to rely increasingly on renewable energy sources, such as biofuels, natural gas, ethanol, propane, hydrogen and electricity.

Continuing the conversation of coordinating the transformation of the energy and transport sectors was Dr Marcelo Blumenfeld, an Assistant Professor in Future Transport Systems from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and an industrial fellow for Introducing Innovation at the Birmingham Centre for Railroad Research and Education (BCRRE).

While Blumenfeld admitted that many low-income countries may struggle to economically justify the implementation of electric powered railways, he said that alternative options such as battery and hydrogen were readily available, that provide viable and cost-effective ways to decarbonise railways, by upscaling existing assets without the need for fossil fuels. Using a case study carried out by BCRRE in Tanzania as an example, he illustrated how hydrogen-powered trains could reduce carbon emissions by as much as 10,000 tonnes every year.

Le-Ann Hare, Portfolio Director atleading global events company dmg events and host ofTransport Evolution African Forum & Expo, said that overall, the trade show was a categorical success. We were very pleased to have brought leading industry players from across the world to South Africa after a two-year hiatus and are confident that many valuable connections were made while bringing together like-minded people to learn and share their experiences in developing a sustainable way forward for the transport industry.

Next yearsTransport Evolution Africa Forum & Expowill be held on 20-21 September 2023 at Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC Complex, Durban South Africa.

Jrgen Klopp praises forwards and Darwins evolution in surprise setup – The Guardian

Jrgen Klopp praised Darwin Nez and Liverpools new-look attack as his team comfortably eclipsed Rangers to strengthen their Champions League qualification hopes at Anfield.

Liverpools victory arrived courtesy of a Trent Alexander-Arnold freekick plus a Mohamed Salah penalty but it was the understanding between a reshaped forward line that enabled Klopps team to dominate Rangers, who remain without a point and a goal on their return to the Champions League stage.

Nez, making his first European start for Liverpool and only his third in total, was denied several times by the veteran Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor but impressed throughout. Klopp insisted it is only a matter of time before the Uruguay international is rewarded with his first goal at Anfield.

The Liverpool manager said: The way the boys up front moved together was extremely, extremely good, especially for only one session working on it. And that was a lowintensity session because of their recent workload. We never did it before. You saw how good a striker Darwin is to be constantly in those situations. Everybody saw tonight that this will happen. All good.

I think our setup was the bigger surprise tonight. We surprised ourselves and these situations can then happen. It was difficult to defend. Diogo Jota moved particularly well between the lines. It was a difficult game and occasion for Rangers but we respect them a lot. We dont think we are halfway through. Next week will be different. It was 2-0, a top game, good result, lets go from there.

Alexander-Arnolds goal was a timely reminder of his attacking quality following recent criticism of his defending and the doubt over his England place at the World Cup.

He played a good game, especially defensively, and scored a wonderful goal, Klopp said. Trent didnt have a defensive problem, we had a defensive problem. We were not in the perfect moment so we had to adjust. It was a wonderful goal. Its a long time since he scored a free-kick so I am happy he had that still in his locker.

Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football

Rangers manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, admitted Liverpool were on a different level and his team have to improve when the teams meet again at Ibrox next week. I think we improved in the second half but the level we face is very high, he said. Dont forget the level of the opposition. Before the game everybody said Liverpool was out of form but you can see the quality. The gap is obvious.

We are competing against one of the best sides in Europe. I think we competed really well. We will learn from this game and we should take those experiences into the next game and the league.

Can Litecoins latest developments make LTC an investor favorite in Q4 – AMBCrypto News

Litecoin [LTC] had a difficult seven days, as the cryptocurrency couldnt perform as per investor expectations. The alt registered a mere 1% seven-day gains. According to CoinMarketCap, LTC at press time, was trading at $53.39 with a market capitalization of more than $3.8 billion.

In an interesting revelation, CRYPTOWZRD, a popular crypto analyst, pointed out that Litecoin was following Bitcoins [BTC]overall sentiment and movements.

The findings of this analysis were evident by looking at both the charts of both the coins as they registered similar growth in the last few days.

For instance, at press time BTCs and LTCs one-hour growth was 0.03% and 0.16% respectively. Nonetheless, the Litecoin ecosystem witnessed a few upgrades and developments. These may have the potential to help the coin move up in the days to come.

______________________________________________________________________________________

Here is AMBCryptos Price Prediction for Litecoin (LTC) for 2023-24

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Recently, Litecoin developers pushed a new update called MimbleWimble Extension Blocks. According to them, this is the largest upgrade in the LTC blockchain as it will increase LTCs scalability over ten fold. This development looked pretty promising as it increased the blockchains capability considerably.

However, despite the effort, things in the short-term didnt seem to be in LTCs favor as several metrics suggest a possible downfall in the coming days.

For instance, though the Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio registered a slight uptick, it was still considerably down. Litecoin also didnt manage to gain much traction from the crypto community, which was evident by looking at LTCs social volume as it decreased over the last week.

Earlier this month, Santiments data also revealed that LTC gained the third spot on the list of cryptocurrencies with the most daily active addresses. However, things might have changed a bit over the last few weeks, as LTCs daily active addresses declined as compared to late September. Nonetheless, LTCs development activity had spiked lately, which was a green flag.

Furthermore, data from on-chain intelligence platform Glassnode pointed out that LTCs reserve risk decreased in the last week. This meant that traders could invest in LTC.

LTCs daily chart portrayed an ambiguous picture as a few market indicators supported a price hike, while the rest suggested otherwise. For instance, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) displayed a bullish crossover, which might help the coin climb the ladder in the coming days.

The Bollinger Bands (BB) data revealed that LTCs price might soon enter a high volatility zone after registering a weeks-long sideways monument. This may increase the chances of a northbound breakout.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) were both near neutral positions, suggesting that the market could head in any direction. However, the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) Ribbon indicated sellers advantage in the market as the 20-day EMA was resting below the 55-day EMA. This may minimize the chances of an uptick in the short-term.

What Is Litecoin Halving – BanklessTimes

Last updated 7th Oct 2022

Litecoin has now been one of the most popular cryptocurrencies on the market for a very long time. It has a great brand image, along with sustained popularity and a valid use case. Often dubbed as the silver to Bitcoins gold it shares many of the same characteristics as the current no.1 crypto but with some of its own unique features too.

One of the most significant features that these two crypto-assets share is they undergo a process called Halving. Halving can have a dramatic effect on price predictions, miner activity, and the inevitable hype that surrounds a cryptocurrency.

Halving is definitely a concept that everyone wanting to learn about crypto should understand, so we have created this easy-to-follow guide to explain what Litecoin is, how Halving works, and the effects this can have on markets and miners.

Founded in 2011 by former Google engineer and software developer Charlie Lee, Litecoin enjoyed success as one of the most popular Altcoins on the market. After his time at Google Charlie Lee also worked as a director of engineering at Coinbase and was one of the first employees that the company had. His experience in the crypto space then led to the creation of Litecoin with a vision that was very similar to that of Bitcoins.

In fact, Charlie Lee launched Litecoin with the aim to be different from many of the pumps and dumps found on the market. It was unique in the way that no developers received any LTC before its ICO and similarly, there was no pre-mine.

The vision of Litecoin was essentially to be a light version of Bitcoin. If people viewed Bitcoin as virtual gold then Litecoin would be a virtual silver, facilitating cheap and faster transactions than the slower jugunaught that Bitcoin is. Litecoin also differed from BTC in its mining algorithm; instead of the SHA-256 proof-of-work system that would require miners to have specialized hardware, Litecoin would be able to be mined on any regular computer.

This is certainly a valid use-case as even today we see protocols competing to lower transaction costs and increase throughput whilst still keeping the principle of decentralization intact. In tandem with this Litecoin had a capped supply that would be halved every 4 years, just as Bitcoin. This seemed a sure-fire way to protect the value of LTC over time and mirror the deflationary characteristics of Bitcoin.

To understand what halving is we must first touch on mining. Mining is the process of contributing to the decentralized network that supports a protocols ecosystem and receiving financial rewards for doing so. People often dont understand how a network can be decentralized, and offering rewards to miners for providing that physical infrastructure that a network need is exactly how it works.

Litecoin uses a proof-of-work system that essentially means miners must solve complex mathematical equations to create a block. This block is then verified if solved, meaning it has become a verified part of the blockchain it supports and now further blocks can be built on top of it. Creating blocks is costly due to the computer power required, so miners receive rewards for doing so in the form of the native currency - in this case in LTC.

Halving is the deflationary element of the Litecoin ecosystem. It is an inbuilt function within the network that means every four years the rewards miners receive for mining blocks will be cut in half. Of course, this is not ideal for miners but in terms of tokenomics, it helps to reduce the supply of new coins. This essentially increases the value of those LTC that can be mined as now there are half as many available; this can also have a direct impact on the market price of the coin as speculators can see that there is no dilution of value. Essentially, it's a control on the supply.

Halving can have a dramatic impact on price and this is certainly the area most looked at. If the supply of LTC is reduced then usually you will see a correlative effect of an increase in market value. Vise versa, an increase in supply is usually coupled with a decrease in market value. There are also clear patterns to be seen in any halving period with the market price. Usually, miners will increase their workload before the halving period thereby reducing the market value of the asset in question. Following this and the subsequent halving prices will begin to stabilize, and can even dramatically increase under some circumstances.

The first Litecoin halving occurred in August 2015. Originally rewards for miners per block were 50 LTC, this was therefore reduced to 25 LTC. The valuation of LTC slightly rose in the period before the halving, before dropping slightly and then leveling out after the halving had taken place. LTC had previously reached highs of $32 before this first halving but seemed to then level out around about $4 after it.

Within the time between the first and second halving, LTC had significantly changed. What was around a $4 coin at the time of the first halving had now reached far over $250, so the economic environment had changed significantly. August 2019 saw the second halving take place which reduced the miners reward down to 12.5 LTC. Since this event, LTC has somewhat stabilized at its $100 support level having fallen steadily for the past four months.

Litecoins next halving is supposed to take place in August 2023 and will see the rewards for miners drop again by another 50% to 6.25 LTC. The general consensus of the crypto community is that the price of an asset will rise after a halving - but this is somewhat up for debate.

While in theory, a halving should increase the value of an asset this does not seem to always be the case in practice. We have seen with Litecoin that its halving is not necessarily the biggest catalyst in its price change. In fact, after being designed as the silver to Bitcoins gold, it seems that the BTC price is the biggest catalyst for LTC price change.

The price of an asset is determined by two factors: supply and demand.

While halving does clearly have a part to play in this there are too many other contextual factors at play that also could influence this.

Halving is an integral part of the Litecoin ecosystem; it is one of its core tools to regulate the supply of the coin and ensures that it isn't unlimited as is with some fiat. As well as this critical aspect of tokenomics it also acts as a reward system for the people that help provide the infrastructure for the Litecoin network: miners. Halving directly affects miners due to the 50% reduction of their reward for creating blocks but in tandem helps balance the financial ecosystem of the network.

While halving is theoretically supposed to lead to an increase in the value of an asset we have seen this is not historically the case with Litecoin Halving. In fact, it seems that its relationship to BTC is a much more prevalent factor and should be viewed as more meaningful than the 4-yearly halving cycle of Litecoin. We can therefore conclude that the upcoming Litecoin Halving in 2023 is unlikely to dramatically influence the value of LTC.

Can I mine Dogecoin and Litecoin at the same time?

Yes. Dogecoin is mergemined with LTC which means it is possible to mine two coins simultaneously, without requiring any extra computing power. This partnership was made to avoid Doge holders manipulating its market value.

What happens when there are no rewards for miners?

This is one of the most interesting questions in the crypto community. Technically speaking, miners will no longer receive rewards for their services in the form of new supply coins, but instead with transaction fees.

Will the value of Litecoin go up after its halving?

Historically, it looks as though Litecoin Halving does not affect the value of Litecoin to a large degree. Instead, it is its close relationship to BTC that seems to be the most significant factor.

Houston Texans offense in a trance, plus other Week 4 takeaways – Toro Times

The Houston Texans played the Los Angeles Chargersthis past Sunday. The Chargers were the heavy favorite, but the Texans almost pulled together a comeback but once again fell short.

There are a lot of noticeable improvements from Houston, but the offense took too long to get moving as there was poor offensive play calling, and yet again, too many missed tackles on defense. The rookies looked great, but there is much to improve to become competitive.

Here are three takeaways from the Week 4 loss to Los Angeles, moving Houston to 0-3-1 overall after four games in the 2022 season.

Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans offense has been in a trance, doing the same thing every game with no adjustments. The Texans will run the ball, which went very well, but quarterback Davis Mills will either make incorrect reads or rely on veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Until the fourth quarter, Mills missed reads, threw uncatchable balls and turned the ball over twice.

When the fourth quarter came, Mills finally opened his vision and made good reads, throwing it to three different receivers. Mills made a great throw to tight end Jordan Akins and followed that up with a short pass to running back Rex Burkhead.

Mills finally targeted second-year wide receiver Nico Collins for a deep 58-yard dart. Mills looked like he did at the end of last season with a few perfect passes and more trust in Collins. Mills looked great that drive, taking the right shots downfield and throwing to multiple pass catchers.

The Texans came close to substituting Kyle Allen in for Mills and having him warm up on the sideline, but then Mills looked good in the last quarter.

If Mills doesnt play as he did in the fourth quarter on Sunday this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he may be riding the bench very soon.

Many Texans fans are already looking into the 2023 NFL Draft, hoping to select quarterback CJ Stroud from Ohio State or Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. It may be time to move on if Mills cant blow fans away and get their belief and trust in Week 5.

The Up & Coming EDM Genres Likely To Strike It Big In The Coming Years – Critical Hit

EDM is a popular music genre as a whole, but within the category of EDM are a huge variety of subgenres, with new subgenres constantly being added to the mix through experimentation and development.

While there will always be the staple EDM genres, like progressive house and trance, emerging genres are creating their own unique spin on the music.

In this article, well go through some of the EDM subgenres that are gaining traction in the underground music scene, and are likely to make a major splash on the mainstream music scene in the next few years.

Rave dance parties in the 90s were punctuated by wildly flailing glow-sticks, bodypaint, and the thumping drum loops of acid house or industrial techno.

This early revival is seeing a resurgence in the underground music scene as it appeals to both a nostalgic older crowd and a younger crowd experiencing something new for the first time, says TeenVogue.

Record labels like Kniteforce Labels have been scooping up a lot of big names from the early 90s rave scene and releasing new material on vinyl.

Of course, there were many subgenres in the 90s rave period as well, so a few of the ones seemingly making a major comeback include:

Behringer also released a TD-3 Synthesizer for only $100, which many are saying could pave the way for a major acid techno revival as hobbyists can enjoy a cheap dual setup for live acid performances.

A blending of electronic trance music with good old Mississippi Blues, trance blues has been emerging from the chill vibes niche crowd onto the mainstream, thanks to artists like Otis Taylor, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Guy Davis, and others.

Its a relatively simple concept on paper digging through the history of Mississippi Delta Blues music (see here) to find banger tracks that follow that genres exact blueprint, then giving them a modern twist by adding an atmospheric, floating melodic/synth bassline.

Its not a new concept in music and has been happening for years in more experimental genres, like psychedelic trance. But trance blues is starting to gain a more diverse following, and especially with the abundance of music streaming services today could well be a very popular genre in the next few years.

Producers David Guetta and Morten Breum coined this genre which has taken the EDM world by storm in some ways its difficult to label it up and coming, because its already here, but what weve witnessed with the genre so far only seems to be the tip of the iceberg.

A blending of early Big Room EDM, with its focus on huge house drops and deep basslines, with a bit of modern melody and techno leanings, Future Rave is certainly ripe for experimentation and cloning, and its success will no doubt lead to a number of copycat genres in the next few years.

While David Guetta and Morten may be the best example of this subgenre, other artists are creating signature sounds with it, including names like Olly James, Sander Von Doorn, and Dada Life.

Im sure well be hearing a lot more of Future Rave in the future, pun intended.

Known for its smooth, flowing melodies layered over the deep basslines of Drum and Bass, Liquid DNB is seeing a surging increase in interest, both from EDM fans and EDM newcomers.

Coined in the early 00s by the legendary DJ Fabio, liquid DnB emerged as a reaction to the harsher, more aggressive techno styles of the late 90s, says RollingStone. It focuses on melodic, atmospheric melody and enticing synths, with head-nodding drum loops.

While the genre has long been a mainstay in the UK, its experienced a massive surge in popularity worldwide in recent times, including the US and Indonesia.

The next few years will likely see a number of major producers jump on the bandwagon, creating truly original Liquid DnB tracks which take the subgenre into the new millennium.

Possessed by art, following the heart – MediaNews4U

Born in Kerala and brought up in Kuwait, Vincent Vadakkans love for cinema started at a very young age. Today, after being in the advertising industry for over 15 years, Vadakkan is Creative Director at Maitri Advertising Works. He also scripts movies, acts in some and is an accomplished artist whose brush on the canvas has impressed many.

I did my schooling from The Indian School, Kuwait, and as a kid I was exposed to the world of movies, especially the classic ones. We had holidays on Thursdays and Fridays. Hindi movies were played on our VCR set on Thursdays and Malayalam movies on Friday. This was a regular practice at home and that made my love for cinema grow, he recalls.

Vadakkan moved to India for his higher studies and graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Chitrakala Parishath.

During my childhood we used to go for vacations to my ancestral home and places of other relatives, which would mostly be in the outskirts or villages. I would come back after the vacation and sketch people, happenings, and the village scenery from my memory, says the artist-turned multifaceted creative.

Art seemed like a natural choice for the prodigy but not everyone endorsed his pick as a career option.

Like any other parents, mine also wanted me to be an engineer. I was always clear that I wanted to do something creative in my life and career. Generally, our parents and the society have a notion that artists or a career in the creative field will never help people survive or pay bills, same was with me. But I chose to opt art for the love I had for the subject, says Vadakkan.

Cinema Calling

He started his career in advertising and design with Leo Burnett Orchard. He later joined Ogilvy & Mather and a few other agencies. It was during his second stint with Ogilvy & Mather as Creative Director that his calling for cinema came, he reveals.

My motivation to write a film was that if you can tell a story in 30 seconds for a product in a TV commercial, then you can well write a full-length feature film. One day while working at my desk in Ogilvy, I had a germ of an idea to write a screenplay for a Malayalam feature film; I found a well-bred team to collaborate. We persisted for four years, bringing forth the dream, and finally, my first feature film titled Trance was released worldwide on February 20th, 2020, says Vadakkan.

Trance starring Fahad Faasil, Nazriya Nazim and Gautham Vasudev Menon was a neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Anwar Rasheed. The movie dealt with the topic of commercialisation of religion and spirituality. In a bold attempt, the movie openly criticised and portrayed the realities behind the spirituality business and miracle healers. Despite the controversies that surrounded the movie, the film had a bumper opening. Reportedly, Trance crossed the 20-crore mark at the worldwide box officewithin the first 11 days of its release.

Vadakkan quit his job in Ogilvy in 2014 to write the script for Trance as it was a complicated subject which required more time and energy. The first draft was ready by 2015. But the team kept improvising the script.

Looking back at those days, Vadakkan says, One of the biggest challenges I faced during that period was taking a plunge to achieve something new. I had a comfortable and well-paid job, quitting it when you have a family to take care of and living on the savings Or the times when your savings dry up, you have to do random freelancing jobs to pay the bills. It is quite a tough journey.

He has finished his next project titled Rajni, for which he has penned dialogues. Its a bi-lingual film starring Kalidas Jayaram. He is co-writing a dark comedy action movie with Francis Thomas who is the Group Creative Director at Maitri, who has co-written the Ilamai Idho Idho segment in the 2020Tamilanthology Putham Pudhu Kaalai.

Vadakkan wants to write and direct a film in future.

I have the story and the entire script in my head, I just have to write it down. Realistically speaking, a directorial debut can happen in the next five years, he says.

Facing the Camera

Cinema was always part of my life and I wanted to pursue acting. But I wasnt confident about my looks and body weight, he says.

During college, Vadakkan joined theatre and performed in plays.

I did a play titled Weeds directed by Abhishek Majumdar. I was very passionate about acting and when I started working, I used to go for rehearsals after work. Playing a character which doesnt have any of your character traits also gave me an amazing feeling. Theatre has given me the confidence and methods of acting. Acting was always in my cards, he says.

In 2015, he acted in a short film named The Fish. He made his film debut with Malayalam movie Ela Veezha Poonchira.

My movie debut was an accidental one. The director Shahi Kabir is a friend of mine. He called me over the phone one day to inform me about the movie puja. We spoke for some time and the next day he called me and said that he had put me on loud speaker, so that people can hear my voice. My Malayalam conversations will have a mix of English as well to it. The character who is the Superintendent of Police required it and I did that, says Vadakkan.

He has also done a role in the movie Rajni he has written dialogues for. He is in discussion for his next acting role.

The Artist

Vadakkan is among those who graduated in fine arts who hasnt lost touch with the first love for the brush on canvas. He wants to hold an exhibition someday. For now, he posts his art work on his Instagram page.

I like surreal kind of art. My art works have a sense of longing like the characters I write about, most of it comes from an unmet longing of childhood. I like to maintain surrealism in my art, he says.

Lessons from Advertising

Advertising gave me exposure to a wider world of artists, directors, and cinematographers, and a close proximity towards cinema. It has taught me that the idea is very important and art and copies are just the tools. I have incorporated the same learning in films as well. If I am telling a story, then it should be completely fresh. Most importantly my job is to be a storyteller to sell a feeling so that people can emotionally connect to a brand or a product. What we try to achieve is to entertain our audience, and not flood them with information. And if were not entertaining them, then we arent doing our jobs well, Vadakkan says.

Inspiration/s

For Vadakkan, inspiration comes from people around him.

I am a great observer of people and happen to hear lots of conversations, which I use in my work. My greatest inspirations are Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino, Wong Kar-Wai. I would go back and revisit their works to inspire me on how to write, where to start, and so on.

His support system, reveals the storyteller, is his wife Munna and daughters Niharika and Zarah.

My wife is an art teacher. She has done Masters in Visual Arts and we met during college days. She is my greatest critique. For the next film I am writing, my daughters are my inspiration. They help me to think and approach certain things or topic from a different angle, he concludes.

Is It Me Or Did Some Of You Find Dulquer Salmaans Performance In Chup Mediocre? – PinkLungi

Its been a while since Chup was released. I recently got a chance to finally watch it. All I can say is that Dulquer Salmaans performance in Chup wasnt up to the mark. I wish it was, though.

Chup, written and directed by R Balki, starring Sunny Deol, Dulquar Salmaan and Shreya Dhanwantary released on 23rd September. The day holds value since it is celebrated as National Cinema Day. All the tickets, despite the movie and theatre, were sold for Rs. 75.

Chups trailer was promising and assured the cine audience of an unconventional serial killer thriller. But the hype of the movie died down after the first two days because it lacked to deliver the performance it promised. The excitement of the Malayali audience to see DQ in such a challenging role in Bollywood died down like wet fireworks. But how does this reflect on Dulquer Salmaans performance in Chup?

Also Read: Attention Please, Chup And The Psychology Of Artists

The idea of Dulquer Salmaan, who has starred in heartwarming movies like Charlie and Varane Avashyumundu, in the role of a serial killer was a difficult pill to swallow. Apart from that, he lacked the killer instinct and the typical manifestations commonly observed in serial killers. His chemistry with Sunny Deol is also a hit-and-miss. It feels like a forced casting where a person with extreme vengeance and frustration is forced to perform homicides. While his love story with Nila is interesting and is heightened as the mystery unveils, the all-too-predictable action disappoints the audience. The psychotic side of DQ is unmasked as the movie progresses. It would have had a greater impact with a more scintillating casting. The other actors are under shadowed when DQ enters into the artistic trance. His fixation on the pioneers of the Hindi Cinema would be more justified if they had a more logical link.

The unconventional serial killer ticks all the boxes of a conventional serial killer such as a troubled childhood, physical abuse, a major life trauma that causes deep pain as well as an intense love for animals and plants yet not shying away from killing humans. To add to this, DQ is also a payankili lover boy leading to the most obvious climax. The predictable plot and the weak script tried to reach high goals but were unable to tie the loose ends. The portrayal of the serial killer is unnatural. The reason for the homicides is also stimulated, leaving us disappointed.

It is very evident from the first few scenes that DQ is most likely suffering from a mental disorder, where he talks to himself as two different people. He mentions hearing voices in his head as well as his obsessive nature. It is important to say that he has done a fairly decent job with his accent and language, however, I feel that DQ is attempting to fit into the role but is unable to deliver an audience-grabbing performance. He seems to be garbling with his accent as he delivers dialogues in Hindi. His expressions of ecstasy oscillate between his obsession for revenge and garden tending, almost as if his character is unable to penetrate into the depth that will make him a deranged serial killer.

The plot is promising and in favour of the killer but the script doesnt stage a longer encounter between the police and the killer. A typical chase where Dulquer plots his escape from the police wouldve added to the excitement of the audience. Dulquers eccentricity as a serial killer is mediocre and not a performance that will be a testament to his career.

All said and done, Dulquer Salmaans performance in Chup is worth noting as he tries to wreak terror and havoc but minor alterations to the character would have helped to bring out a gory and vengeful shade in his character.

HALESTORM, THE WARNING, and NEW YEARS DAY, Atlanta, GA, The Eastern 09.26.2022 – OUTBURN ONLINE – Outburn

HALESTORM, THE WARNING, and NEW YEARS DAYAtlanta, GAThe Eastern09.26.2022

Halestorm, The Warning, and New Years Day hit the road on September 21st, 2022 starting at Mars Music Hall in Huntsville, AL. New Years Day didnt make it due to mechanical problems with their tour bus, but on September, 26th all three bands brought their A game.

Showing up to the venue early, there were already fans in line three hours before the doors opened. The Eastern is a 2,400 capacity venue and it was packed out by show time. At 7 p.m. sharp the lights turned off and out walked the members of New Years Day one by one, ending with frontwoman Ash Costello taking the stage, and the band hooked and reeled the audience in from the first note they played. Guitarists Nikki Misery and Jeremy Valentine ripped through every song, as the rhythm section of Brandon Wolfe on bass and drummer Tommy Rockoff brought the tempo and low-end groove.

All these sounds swirled around as Ash Costello belted out note after note, pulling the audience in closer and closer with each song. Costello commanded the stage as the band moved around her as if they were caught up in the trance of her voice. 40 minutes had flown by, and as quickly as they took the stage, they were gone.

Up next was Mexican rock power trio The Warning. At 8 p.m. the Villarreal Velez sisters took the stage. The Warning had a big, full sound achieved as a three piece. They started the set with Dust to Dust. The song began with an excellent bass groove from Ale and drummer Pau on lead vocals while keeping the tempo with a driving beat and drum fills throughout the song. As they kept the rhythm and tempo, guitarist Dany danced around the fret board and traded off lead vocals with her sister for the remainder of the set.

They ran through the songs Z, Queen of the Murder Scene, Choke, and Money. With each passing song the crowd got louder and louder. The sisters then played their rendition of Metallicas Enter Sandman, and the audience went nuts. They ended the set with Error, Disciple, and the uptempo guitar chugging fan favorite Evolve. The Warning didnt just warm up the crowd, they lit them on fire.

Usually, the crowd settles down between each set, but the excitement was overwhelmingly present, and at 9:10 p.m. the headliners Halestorm took the stage. They started the set off with Rock Show, which was fitting because that was exactly what the fans came to see. They followed with I Like It Heavy and Familiar Taste of Poison. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale held on to her mic and walked around the stage, amping up the crowd with every note she belted out.

Lzzy then grabbed her signature Gibson guitar and started picking out the song Amen. The first four songs felt like an appetizer, because when the fifth song Freak Like Me hit, the main course had arrived. Drummer Arejay Hale and bassist Josh Smith laid down the beat and low-end, while guitarist Joe Hottinger brought his trademark guitar grooveall of this in unison as the crowd hung on to every word that left Lzzys lips. The band blasted through the next several songs, including favorites Wicked Ways, Lover Bites, and Strange Girl.

Lzzy gave us a pallet cleanser, showing off her piano skills before the band went full throttle into its most popular song, I Miss the Misery, which ended with a booming drum solo by Arejay. They ended the set with the first single off their newest album Back from the Dead, followed by I Get Off and I Am the Fire.

Halestorm left the stage, but the crowd wasnt having any of that and immediately started chanting for an encore. The two Hales, Smith, and Hottinger werent gone for long before they came back on stage with cups in hand, made a toast to the audience, and then started playing the catchy Heres to Us. They then closed out the night with the hard-hitting The Steeple, and its clear by the lyrics, This is our church you are my people that Hale was born to be a rockstar. As the song ended, Arejay jumped off his drum riser with sticks in hand to give out to the fans, with several hundred arms in the air hoping to catch one of his mallets. Hottinger and Smith flicked their picks across the venue, as Lzzy handed out roses and autographed signs being held up by their adoring fans.

Tisto unites with the Black Eyed Peas for new single ‘Pump It Louder’ – We Rave You

Tisto joins forces with the Black Eyed Peas for new single, Pump It Louder: Listen Tisto and pop foursome, the Black Eyed Peas, have teamed up to re-imagine the groups 2009 smash hit, Pump It, with the newly produced track, Pump It Louder. While the original Black Eyed Peas version featured former singer, Fergie, this updated version showcased the vocals of new singer, J. Rey Soul.

The songs main surf influenced riff is originally derived from a 1962 single by Dick Dale titled, Misirlou. For this latest rework, the riff still opens the track, but is slowed down from its original version, as well as that utilized in 2009 by the Black Eyed Peas. This new version allows Tistos use of synths and bass stabs to permeate and elevate the single, while still showcasing the vocal prowess and hip hop sensibilities of the group.

As a fan and supporter ofwill.i.ams work and Black Eyed Peas, I couldnt be more excited to collaborate directly with them on this project, saidTisto. Fans go absolutely crazy when I play this out live in clubs and festivals I cant wait to officially release this new version for the world to go wild to!

Tisto is already having an incredible year, releasing a smash hit, Hot In It, with singer Charli XCX as well three monumental performances during the return of Tomorrowland, including a return to his trance roots over the course of the festival. Of course his biggest moment of the year came in August when he welcomed his second child, Viggo Tisto Verwest, into the world, forcing him to cancel several festival and club dates to be by his wifes side for the birth.

What can possibly go wrong? Global headwinds stall Australian couples epic round-the-world voyage – The Guardian

It was around the end of August when Peter and Jennifer Bernard moored their 50ft cutter-rigged ketch, Steel Sapphire, at the marina below Londons Tower Bridge.

Their journey to circumnavigate the globe was supposed to have taken them back to Sydney within five years, but after four, they had only reached the British capital. They were halfway round and years late.

The forces of the natural world with the dictates of seasonal cyclones and a global pandemic had seen their beautifully laid plan fall apart.

Peter, 50, learned to sail as a teenager and had always planned to sail around the world when he retired. It was Jennifer, 52, having lost a close friend to cancer, who challenged Peter when they got together: Why would we wait until we were in our 60s?

Unlike most who tackle the odyssey, they didnt come from engineering or trade backgrounds, so the two self-described corporate desk jockeys spent eight years learning about engine maintenance, plumbing and first aid.

But the truth is, we could never have learned everything, Peter says. Ultimately, you just have to set a date.

The couple sold their three-bedroom house in Glebe to buy the yacht that would become their home on the seas. They left their management jobs in the pharmaceutical industry and set off from Sydney Harbour on 1 July 2018.

Between 2010 and 2018, everything that we planned we did to the letter and left on the day we said we would leave, Peter says.

Everything was perfect. And we then had a very detailed plan for what was going to happen next month by month, everywhere we were going to be in the world, and not a damn thing of [that] has come true.

After travelling along the east coast of Australia and then from Darwin to Indonesia, Jennifer says it was in Thailand that their beautifully laid plan fell apart.

There, a small refit got delayed and delayed and delayed, and we missed our opportunity to sail across the Indian Ocean.

Because of seasonal cyclones, You have to follow the weather. The weather dictates as to where we could be in the world and what time its safest.

The couple decided to make the most of the situation by returning to Indonesias Anambas Islands, which they had raced through on their way north.

If no one knows about them, thats great, because they are a hidden gem, Jennifer says.

At the time, Peter says, they thought: Its not that bad, its only the first year. Weve got all of 2020. What can possibly go wrong in 2020?

The Bernards arrived in Maldives the same day authorities declared a Covid-19 lockdown, which saw them and those aboard 15 other boats confined to their vessels.

After a month of being forbidden from setting foot on land, the government gave those on private boats permission to go ashore on a private island during daylight hours.

After four months in the Maldives, on 11 July 2020 the couple sailed on.

They were one of nine boats to secure a permit from the British Indian Ocean Territory Administration to enter Chagos Islands despite Covid restrictions.

The islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 500km south of the southern tip of the Maldives, and thousands of miles from land in any other direction, was the home of the Chagossian people until 1973, when the entire population was forcibly removed by the British colonial administration.

While the British allow private boats to stop at Chagos if they can prove they have a valid reason for safety at sea respite, the UK refuses to allow the descendants of Chagos Islanders to return.

As part of their three weeks on the islands, the couple spent time on Boddam Island, seeing the vestiges of homes, stores, a church and a cemetery all solidly built over a 100-year period from stone, and now lying in ruins since the people were forced to leave.

Peter says what was equally sobering was the rubbish broken beer bottles scattered among the ruins, and assorted sailing debris including buoys, floats, jerry cans, a damaged rudder, even a mast left by a different era of cruising before the concept of leaving a clean wake was established.

It was hard to know what to feel more sad about the fate of the Chagossian people, forcibly evicted and unable to return despite UN resolutions demanding that the UK allow them to, or the terrible abuse of the white privilege enjoyed by the yachties who were allowed to come here when the Chagossians were not, and showed so little appreciation of the beautiful and pristine environment that they spoiled it for everyone in the future, Peter says.

After three weeks on the Chagos Islands, the Bernards sailed on to Seychelles on 4 August 2020, and thats where the world really wasnt opening up as fast as we hoped or wanted, Jennifer recalls.

We had to weigh up that decision: do we sail on to South Africa and miss out all the islands we wanted to see, like Mauritius and Runion and Madagascar, because they were all closed, and even South Africa was closed, so it was a risk to sail there, albeit wed been told it was likely to open soon, Peter explains.

They made the decision to stay in Seychelles for an extra year to be able to see all the places they had planned to on their adventure.

The Bernards had to accept theyd lost two years out of their five-year plan. They decided that in order to get their finances back on track, they would stop in London to work and earn enough money to complete the second half of their circumnavigation.

While the pandemics disruptions cast their plans into disarray, this also took them off the beaten track for most sailing cruising routes, and the couple say its some of these places that proved the most memorable. For example, because Covid prevented them from visiting so many countries, they decided to sail an alternative route through the Red Sea, which took them to Tanzania.

There they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, went on safari, hung out in coffee houses in Zanzibar and spent a few days helping a remote island community where their friends had installed a generator the year before.

Weve had places where the sailing was better for sure. Weve had places where the food was better for sure, but Tanzania was just this multifaceted experience Peter says.

When the couple sailed through the South Atlantic, they travelled from Cape Town to Namibia, then on to Saint Helena, where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled, and eventually on to Ascension Island.

Jennifer says it was in this last place that to get ashore, its the most difficult dinghy landing with this huge swell coming in.

You have to partially tie up to this pier, which you then have to leap in between swells with these huge Galpagos sharks circling underneath your dinghy just waiting for you to fall in.

And these are the bitey human-eating kind of sharks. Youre not allowed to swim in Ascension, because the sharks developed a taste for humans. It was incredibly exhilarating and scary, and I cant believe I did it.

For Peter who emigrated to Australia from Scotland in his 20s after falling in love with the country as a backpacker the highlight of their journey was sailing up the River Clyde into the port in Largs, where his father taught him to sail.

I was expecting that my dad would come out in his boat and greet us, Peter says. The bit I wasnt expecting was that my parents had organised for a bagpiper to be standing on the bow of my dads boat so as we moored it up to them, the bagpiper struck up Scotland the Brave and then proceeded to serenade us all the way into the marina.

That was a pretty epic moment. I dont know that many other moments in my life will be as epic. Bear in mind, this is Scotland and by rights it should be pouring down with rain, but it wasnt. It was beautiful sunshine and the heavens smiled and it was perfect.

The pandemic has made us change our plans, Jennifer explains. This is just a different chapter to our journey. And so were going to make the most of living in London and enjoying what this amazing city has to offer.

We dont know how long its going to be. We know it has to be a fair length of time because we really need to save up a lot more money, and its a chance to spend time with Peters family and friends.

We do believe that we will finish our circumnavigation, but as they say, sailors plans are drawn in the sand at low tide.

Fiji Reopens With Great Private Island Resorts For Every Traveler – Forbes

Fiji is full of private island resorts with a small number of luxury accommodations on an entire ... [+] fantasy island. This is just a single villa on a peninsula at the most famous and luxurious of all, COMO Laucala Island.

I visited Fiji last winter when it had some of the strictest COVID-19 travel protocols of any destination, including testing before departure, testing on arrival, special mandatory insurance to cover potential quarantine housing, and on top of all that, some individual resorts had their own testing on arrival requirements. It was a lot of hoops to jump through, but it was worth it, because Fiji was wonderful, and is in many ways a true Bucket List tropical paradise, justifiably renowned as a honeymoon destination.

But now travel to Fiji is much easier, and last month, the country dropped the last of its strict requirements, eliminating both testing upon arrival and testing to board flights to Fiji.

Fiji is famous for its healthy, colorful reefs, and is known in the SCUBA community as the "soft ... [+] coral capitol of the world."

As a nation of islands, the main appeals revolve around beaches and ocean. Relaxation and escapism are big draws, but Fiji is also a world-class Scuba diving destination, home to some of the very best diving in the world, and excels at just about every other kind of watersport, from snorkeling to fishing to surfing. But what really sets it apart from other beautiful tropical destinations like the Caribbean is its extensive range of boutique private island resorts, properties where a single hotel has its own island, often with surprisingly large acreage for a small number of guests. Almost all of these are independent and non-chain, in sharp contrast to the other big private island destination, the Maldives, which has many large name brand resorts.

The Fiji model is much more family-owned and operated, intimate, warm and friendly, and there is only one notable international chain operating a private island resort here. Even this exception is a relatively new management deal for a longstanding resort, as COMO Resorts was brought in to operate Fijis most exclusive propertyand one of the worlds most over-the-top luxury hotspotsLaucala, better known as Red Bull Island. Thats because the resorton a 3,200-acre island once owned by Malcom Forbesit is the fantasy creation and passion project of Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, creator of the Red Bull energy drink company.

Fiji's private island resorts specialize in privacy with lots of space for very few guests, like ... [+] these visitors on a snorkeling trip.

COMO Laucala Island is one of the worlds most famous luxury resorts, and has been home away for home for a bevy of A-List celebrities and tycoons, including George Clooney, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey. For just 25 oversized luxury residences spanning up to 8,000 square feet, it has five restaurants and an acclaimed 18-hole golf course by world-renowned architect David McLay Kidd, who also did the game changing original Bandon Dunes, the Castle Course in Scotlands St. Andrews and many other very highly ranked layouts from Wisconsins Mammoth Dunes to Washingtons Gamble Sands to Hawaiis exclusive Nanea. Laucala has its own modern international airstrip for private jets, an extensive spa, hiking trail network, horse stables, tennis center and full-service marina with its own fleet of dive and sportfishing boats. Guest can snorkel the inner reef just offshore right from their residences, there is kayaking and sailing, and a full PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) dive shop with a complete array of instruction and certification classes as well as guided dives and night dives.

Laucala is the priciest of Fijis private island resorts, for A-list budgets, but the rest of the options are much broader in appeal, including some very affordable luxury. In fact, you can stay in a sumptuous villa, or bure as the traditional thatched roof structures are known in Fiji, at an all-inclusive private island resort with meals and activities here for less than many urban luxury hotels U.S. charge just for a basic room.

One of the famous "treehouse" bures at Matangi Private Island Resort.

Just minutes from Laucala by boat is Matangi Private Island Resort, an adult-only option that features just 12 bures on 240-acres. These include two honeymoon favorite treehouse units that have been featured on the Travel Channel. Matangi, like just about every other resort in Fiji, has its own full service PADI dive shop and boats, fishing, beaches and excursions, plus hiking trails around the lush island, and a spa. It also offers two very unique and special activities for visitors. First, its one of only two SCUBA centers allowed to offer dives with the resident hammerhead sharks at nearby Civa Pearl Farm. Among SCUBA aficionados, hammerhead dives are an ultra-desirable pilgrimage trip, but this is the single most reliable place on earth to see them - in the three years since the dives began there has not been a single shark-free day. In addition, Civa offers tours and discounted direct sales and produces some of the most coveted pearls on earth, in every color.

Back on the private island, Matangis signature activity is a half day champagne picnic package to its very own Horseshoe Bay. Ringed by cliffs and accessible only by boat, Horseshoe Bay is private and hidden, with a gorgeous beach, a day lodge and watersports gear for just a single party at a time, and was chosen as an entrant in the original edition of the bestselling travel classic 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. Direct booking rates at the exceptional (Ive been) family-owned property start at just $750 nightly and include all meals, with sumptuous offerings showcasing local fish and produce. Fascinating Fijian cooking demos are available and Matangi has its own large farm plantation on a neighboring island providing fruits and veggies while local fishermen stock the kitchen daily.

Fiji is full of natural beauty and wonders, like the Sawa-i-Lau caves.

Rates include all non-motorized and cultural activities, and like several top Fijian private islands, even more affordable packages are offered through the travel arm of big box giant Costco, which has quietly become a leader in vacation savings, and is especially powerful in this market. Basically, Costcos agreements require resorts to offer lower prices and/or more inclusions in these turnkey packages than through any other outlet. But they are typically weeklong stays at a single resort, while many independent travelers planning their own trips, or better yet, using travel agents (another great way to save, read more here) might combine two or more islands for 3-4 nights each. If the Costco packages are a fit for you, they tend to be great deals, and for comparable quality of resorts, Fiji is far less expensive than other winter beach options like Hawaii or the Caribbean.

Fiji is a Holy Grail for SCUBA divers.

Another plus of visiting the country is the ease and cost of getting there. Fiji Airlines flies non-stop from both Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is usually at the inexpensive end of the long-haul spectrum. It offers epically good values for business class, complete with lay flat seats and excellent lounge access. When I flew, many of the passengers were Australians or New Zealanders heading home via Fiji, people who fly the route regularly because business class is substantially less than on alternatives Qantas or Air New Zealand. Once you land, just about every private island is one domestic short hop away, on what amounts to a s flightseeing leg. Fiji Airways is a member of OneWorld, so you can use or accrue points and status on American or other OneWorld carriers.

Royal Davui Island Resort is a paradise unto itself, surrounded by a huge protected marine reserve.

One of the easiest options to reach is Royal Davui Private Island Resort, with just 16 villas located off Fijis main island of Viti Leveu, where the international airport in Nadi is. Transfers can be done by boat and propeller plane, boat and driving or directly by helicopter. Ive also visited Royal Davui, and its great. Like Matangi it is adult-only, but while the larger Matangi island is more about privacy and beach bum toes in the sand flair, Royal Davui has a more social feel with nightly gatherings at the main bar, live music, a high number of annual repeat guests in addition to honeymooners, and lots of scheduled activities. The island is smaller (10-acres) but has extra amenities some competitors lack, like a fitness center. While most private islands in Fiji go with traditional thatched bures, Davui offers more contemporary luxury bungalows, complete with private plunge pools and outdoor showers.

The resort island sits in the gorgeous and pristine Beqa Lagoon, has white sandy beaches, and the reef surrounding the island, easily accessed for snorkeling, is within a sacred marine reserve. No fishing is allowed within a mile of the island, keeping the waters fully stocked with colorful undersea life. There is also an uninhabited small island, Castaway Cay, nearby, where Davui offers private boat transfer picnics. Royal Davui has a full service PADI dive center and excellent fishing (more than a mile out), and if a guest catches a fish, it is often made the centerpiece of the evening meal for all island residents with extra platters of sushi or sashimi during cocktail hour. Food is superb and all-inclusive rates cover activities such as kayaks, stand up paddleboards, Hobie cats, snorkeling gear, as well as guided reef snorkeling trips, beach picnics, and lots of lawn and beach games, from sand rugby and volleyball to croquet and bocce, plus cultural activities like cooking classes. Royal Davui also has a full-service spa.

Current offers at Royal Davui include a 7-night stay with free plane and boat transfers from Nadi international airport for just $6000 per couple, or less than $850 a night for two with all meals and a wealth of other inclusions. Like Matangi, Royal Davui also offers packages via Costco Travel.

One of the beachfront bures at Wakaya Club & Spa, on its own private island.

Wakaya Club and Spa, on its own Wakaya Island, is also surrounded by a Marine Protected Area, ensuring vibrant coral reefs. The island resort has just 10 beachfront bure suites and two luxury private villas. This is Fiji, so of course there are stunning beaches, but the resort has taken the tact of setting itself apart via culinary offerings. Wakaya Club & Spa has two on-site organic farms and heavily promotes food experiences for culinary-minded travelers looking to immerse themselves in local culture. Chef Marielle Hajj has worked with chefs around the world including Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boulud, and here promotes her own take on South Pacific culinary traditions using fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Guests can forage daily with Chef Hajj and her team, then enjoy a hands-on cooking class prepared in a traditional lovo fire, piled with volcanic stones. Other culinary options include a private picnic, where guests are taken to a remote beach with a curated picnic hamper and left to enjoy their oceanside meal, or a group picnic with a Fijian barbecue on the beach. Guests can even catch their own fresh fish for dinner. There is a 9-hole golf course, game room, fitness center, tennis, guided hikes, spa, dive center, and Wakaya is one of the only private island resorts in Fiji that includes alcoholic beverages in its rates, even fully stocked mini-bars in each accommodation.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is one of the most famous SCUBA destinations in the world and one of ... [+] Fiji's most family friendly.

While many Fijian resorts are adult-only, there are family friendly exceptions, and the most notable is the famed Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, a larger, full-service property. This is not on a private island, but does enjoy an isolated beachfront location for its 25 bures, and has a private island just offshore for escapist picnics. The all-inclusive rates feature more activities than most competitors, including tennis, glass bottom boat rides, guided eco and nature walks, daily yoga classes, and more. It also has a full childrens club program with daily activities, as well as spa. But this resort is most famous for its diving, considered one of the worlds best SCUBA spots, with a 5-Star PADI center and resident marine biologist.

VOMO island resort has some of the most luxurious lodging in Fiji, including its lavish and unique ... [+] residences.

VOMO is another top Fijian luxury private island resort in the Mamanuca Island group. The 255-acre island is home to signature feature, Mt. Vomo, which can be hiked to the summit for stunning 360-fegree views best enjoyed for sunrise. It is family friendly with baby butlers and a kids village, easily reached from Nadi and has beautiful beaches. Snorkeling is readily available on your own, and they also include daily guided snorkeling safaris, as well as complimentary fitness classes with the resorts personal trainer, and hiking. The extensive range of lodging options skews luxury, and consists of 34 unites, including hillside villas, beachfront villas and larger and more lavish Residences, each unique but with extras like full size swimming pools, gourmet kitchens, private dining areas, butler service, and tons of room. Another thing that sets VOMO apart is the island amenities, including a 9-hole pitch and putt golf course, tennis courts, full 24-hour fitness center and extensive network of hiking and running trails. VOMO is a top choice for both families and the active-minded, and of course, the island has its own PADI scuba center and excellent access to great dive sites nearby. All-inclusive nightly rates begin at about $1,000 per couple, but there are multi-night packages that discount this 20-40%.

There are lots more options including 52-acre Savasi Island, with just eight villas and three beachfront bures. spa, and dive center.
