Coronavirus: Does ‘boosting’ your immune system really help fight off COVID-19? – Newshub

Does strong immunity help you fight off COVID-19?

COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Just like any foreign bug, the body will defend itself against the invader. Strong immunity is built on a healthy gut microbiome and an army of white blood cells. If someone is consuming a healthy diet based on an array of fruits, vegetables and wholefoods (foods in their whole and unprocessed form - e.g. a potato instead of fries), the immune system should be better-equipped to fight off the virus - or any illness, according to the Heart Foundation.

Hence, maintaining healthy immune function cannot be achieved by scoffing chips, biscuits and packaged dinners every day, "balanced" by a probiotic, Berocca and lemon water. It's built through a healthy lifestyle.

Vitamin C is widely touted for its immunity benefits, but if you're consuming enough fruit and veg, a supplement is unnecessary. Scientists in China are currently looking into whether ultra-high doses of vitamin C can help COVID-19 patients fight infection, but results will not be available until later this year.

In the meantime, the daily recommended intake can be achieved through citrus fruits, capsicum and greens such as broccoli and spinach. Unlike a pure vitamin C supplement, these foods also contain other vitamins and minerals that play an important part in keeping your immune system strong.

There are also three tried and trusted methods to supporting your immune system - reducing stress, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.

Kombucha tastes great, it's trendy and there are a number of options on the market that are relatively inexpensive. However, it's not a magic tonic - and drinking it by the litre is not going to ward off COVID-19.

Like probiotics, kombucha contains live microorganisms. However, no studies have ever confirmed whether the drink has a high enough concentration to be considered a probiotic, and there is currently no evidence that kombucha can treat or prevent any illnesses.

To strengthen one's gut health and immunity, a far more pragmatic bet is opting for probiotic foods such as plain, unsweetened yoghurt, which is full of live cultures, and fermented products such as kefir and sauerkraut.

"There is no evidence to suggest that supplements labelled as immune-boosting such as green tea, zinc, elderberry or echinacea will provide any protection against COVID-19. Its more important to have a healthy lifestyle overall," Hursthouse wrote.

However, a vitamin D supplement can prove useful, particularly in parts of the world where sunshine is limited. Several studies have linked low vitamin D levels to a higher risk of respiratory infections. Vitamin D deficiencies are fairly common, and can be discovered through a blood test.

But again, if there isn't a deficiency, a supplement is not entirely necessary. As BBC Future reported in 2016, vitamin supplements typically don't provide any benefits in already healthy people.

And of course, prevention is always a good place to start. To minimise your chances of contracting COVID-19, follow the Ministry of Health's guidelines:

A Week in My Life: A Week in my Life: Stuart Jackson, Chief Executive at ICE Creates – Prolific North

ICE Creates is a UK leader and specialist in behaviour change with services includingdesign and creative, organisational development and behavioural marketing to name a few.

Launched in 1999, the Birkenhead-based organisation has evolved across a variety of fields. The CEO, Stuart Jackson, takes us through a week in his working life.

My week starts with an early morning drive down the M6 with ICE Co-founder, Mandy and our office well-being dog Georgie. We head straight for the office from our home in Croglin where we spend weekends. The Monday morning drive is an opportunity to put our business brains into gear and discuss the week ahead.

I try to ringfence Mondays for team time catch-ups, exploring ideas and setting my weekly goals. We have a flat structure at ICE, so we are all hands-on-deck regardless of position. Its a great environment to be creative in.

This evening I am heading to the East Midlands to meet a client for dinner ahead of delivering a series of coaching sessions for the clients team tomorrow. I use the time on the train to go through the proposal and the brief.

My part of the ICE mission is to help leaders and organisations embrace change and prosper. We deliver Organisational Development sessions across the country based on developing leadership skills to support organisations to engage their people, unlock potential and experience business growth.

Todays session was designed specifically for our client to engage their team in the co-creation of their values and behaviours. Travelling around the country forms a large part of my working week, and I enjoy meeting partners and being hands on across the business, but I try to use my travel time wisely. This evenings journey home meant time for meditation and reflection on the days learning experience.

As much as I love being on the road, family time is precious, and I spend the evening with my girls cooking and relaxing.

Today Im heading to Birmingham with my Creative Director and co-founder to deliver a facilitation session on Leadership. Whilst I facilitate, Ian Jackson is on the boards, visually capturing the content from the discussions by visually mapping the narrative.

Our scribing service is extremely popular as the end product holds many more images at one time than the brain can, leaving a tangible take away from the session long after the event has finished.

Today I am at home on the farm in Croglin, delivering our Natural Leaders programme to support a newly formed team build and develop their leadership style. Working alongside our world-class behavioural experts, highly trained working dogs and Herdwick sheep we design new approaches to increase the effectiveness of leaders and teams.

We realised that the relationship created between a shepherd, their dog and the sheep has a very close resemblance to that of human relationships; its amazing how clearly delegates translate the experience back to the workplace, and even at home or in leisure time - when its least expected!

My main focus on a Friday is following up with clients, building and maintaining relationships, and designing and developing ideas. I always try to work from home on Fridays if time and commitments allow.

Last year ICE celebrated 20 years in business having launched as a design and comms agency in 1999. Over time, our aspiration nudged us towards work that could make a bigger impact to our society and ICE as we know it today provides an increasingly diverse portfolio that covers everything from delivering healthy lifestyle coaching for the NHS to social marketing, behaviour change and organisational and leadership development.

No two days are the same, and its this variety that has maintained our passion to make better happen for the past 20 years. We have put a lot of effort into cultivating the culture at ICE, its a great environment full of passionate and talented individuals with a common goal to make a difference. I earmark time on Fridays to send team high fives to celebrate a job well done, express thanks and generally provide recognition.

As I log off from ICE at the end of the week, its time to turn attention to the farm, working with the sheep and developing our smallholding. I wouldnt have it any other way!

Nutrition and Fitness Experts Precision Nutrition, Renaissance Periodization, the Online Trainer Academy, Trainerize, Girls Gone Strong and Others…

Toronto, March 16, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Precision Nutrition, the worlds largest online nutrition and healthy lifestyle coaching and certification company is partnering with Renaissance Periodization, leaders of science-based nutrition and exercise, the Online Trainer Academy, the worlds first certification for online fitness and nutrition training, Trainerize, a client engagement mobile app for fitness professionals, and Girls Gone Strong, a global leader in womens health, fitness, and pre- and postnatal education to share their knowledge with professionals in the nutrition and fitness industry in an effort to help them navigate challenges resulting from COVID-19. As individuals are exercising social distancing, these companies have created new, free resources to help fitness professionals address concerns from their clients, and also evaluate the steps required to maintain a business remotely.

In recent weeks, our community has raised real concerns about how they will continue their livelihood in the midst of closing gyms and cancelling appointments. Precision Nutritions more than 20 years of experience coaching nutrition online, combined with the expertise and support of our partners has encouraged us to try to help nutrition and fitness professionals with the challenges presented by COVID-19, said Tim Jones, Precision Nutrition Chief Executive Officer. During these stressful times, we are proud to continue focusing our efforts on helping fitness professionals take care of themselves, so they may help others do the same.

An unprecedented, rapidly changing business environment has emerged and new, urgent client concerns are being faced by coaches and personal trainers. In response, Precision Nutrition, Renaissance Periodization, the Online Trainer Academy, Trainerize, and Girls Gone Strong have formed the Coalition of Health and Fitness Leaders (CHFL). This coalition aims to share their collective experience in coaching hundreds of thousands of clients with nutrition and fitness professionals navigating these challenges, as well as identifying opportunities to build more resilient business practices. These companies hope to help those coaches and trainers seeking additional support to move from fear, uncertainty, and confusion and towards empowerment, clarity, and productive action.

Dr. Spencer Nadolsky of Renaissance Periodization added, At times of worry, it is imperative that we evaluate our priorities to understand how we can have the largest impact on those who need it most. The creation of this coalition is the beginning of a unified movement within our industry to support the communities we serve.

The first initiative of the CHFL is a free digital panel discussion that will provide coaches with guidance on how to transition from in-person to online training and how to maintain and support their clients. Facilitated by Precision Nutritions director of curriculum, Krista Scott-Dixon, PhD, the panel of experts will include:

The panel discussion will be available on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 1:00pm EST. Those interested in viewing the discussion can do so by clicking the following link at the aforementioned date and time: get.pn/CHFL-Expert-Panel-Discussion.

With quarantines imminent and a growing general fear surrounding crowds, fewer and fewer people are venturing outside and they definitely arent going to the gym, said Jonathan Goodman of the Online Trainer Academy. People who work in fitness are facing serious financial trouble. That, and its more important now than ever to keep our population healthy during this trying time. Effective remote training is paramount right now for fitness industry personnel and exercisers looking for ways to stay engaged with their fitness and training regimens.

Following the panel, complimentary resources will be made available with actionable next steps coaches can immediately take. This includes programming recommendations, answers to common client FAQs, and the latest medical information available.

The current situation we are all facing is uncharted territory in many ways, but I know we will all get through this and come out on the other side stronger for it. To do that though, we will need to collaborate as one unified community to raise each other up, share our knowledge, and use every tool available to us, said Sharad Mohan of Trainerize. Were proud to be part of the Coalition of Health and Fitness Leaders during this time when the industry now more than ever needs to work together.

To help extend the reach of these resources, the CHFL is looking for other companies and organizations within the larger health and fitness industry to join as partners of the Coalition. Those interested in exploring this opportunity are encouraged to reach out to partners@healthandfitnesscoalition.com to learn more and receive additional information.

"At Girls Gone Strong, we're proud to be working alongside Precision Nutrition, Renaissance Periodization, the Online Trainer Academy, and Trainerize as part of the Coalition of Health and Fitness Leaders. Together, we have a powerful opportunity to create a platform from which we can share evidence-based, practical, and compassionate information and concrete steps health and fitness professionals can use to navigate these uncertain times, said Molly Galbraith of Girls Gone Strong. We hope you accept this invitation to join us in our mission of getting this valuable information to as many professionals as possible."

Spending less time on Facebook could boost your well-being and happiness – The Jakarta Post – Jakarta Post

New European research has found that spending just 20 minutes less time on Facebook each day could increase our happiness and healthy lifestyle habits.

Carried out by a team of psychologists from Ruhr-Universitt Bochum (RUB), Germany, the new study looked at 286 participants who used Facebook for an average of an hour each day.

Of these participants, 140 were asked to reduce their Facebook use by 20minutes each day over a two-week period, which is about one third of the average usage time, while the remaining 146 participants acted as the control group and carried on using Facebook as usual.

The participants were asked to complete questionnaires recording their Facebook use, their well-being (such as depressive symptoms) and their lifestyle (such as physical activity and smoking habits) before the start of the study, one week into it, at the end of the two weeks, and one month and three months after the study had finished.

The findings, published in the journalComputers in Human Behavior, showed that the participants who were told to reduce their Facebook usage time used the platform less, both actively and passively.

Read also: Spending money on experiences rather than possessions could bring you more happiness

"This is significant, because passive use in particular leads to people comparing themselves with others and thus experiencing envy and a reduction in psychological well-being," commented lead author Dr. Julia Brailovskaia.

In addition, those who used Facebook less were also significantly more physically active, smoked less, were significantly more satisfied with their life, showed significantly fewer symptoms of depression, and showed fewer symptoms of addiction to Facebook after the two weeks, compared to the control group. These positive effects could also still be seen three months after the study had ended.

"After the two-week period of Facebook detox, these effects, i.e., the improvement of well-being and a healthier lifestyle, lasted until the final checks three months after the experiment," said Dr. Brailovskaia, who added that the findings suggest that just reducing the amount of time we spend on Facebook each day could be enough to increase our well-being and prevent addiction.

"It's not necessary to give up the platform altogether," concludes Dr. Brailovskaia.

Purdue Extension’s Food Prescription for Better Health earns program of the year award – Terre Haute Tribune Star

Purdue Extensions educational program, Food Prescription for Better Health was awarded the Key Award for Supportive Services Program of the Year at the 2020 Prosperity Indiana Award Conference in Indianapolis.

Vigo County Extension educators, Allison Finzel, Nutrition Education Program Community Wellness Coordinator, and Jay Christiansen, Health and Human Sciences, received the Key Award at the conference that hosted state members and partners in community health and community development, including Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch.

Finzel and Christiansen collaborated with the Indiana State University dietetics, United Way of Wabash Valley and the Wabash Valley Health Center to create the program, which was supported in part by a grant from the Anthem Foundation and produce and kitchen supplies from World Gospel Church and Columbian home products.

The program helps people with Type 2 diabetes lead a healthier lifestyle. Participants receive a free A1C blood test at the beginning and end of the course, as well as weekly blood pressure and weight checks to help monitor their progress. They also receive a $15 basket of fresh fruits and vegetables each week.

Finzel said the idea to create the program came from the concept of using food as a prescription.

When we all sat down to brainstorm, Type II Diabetes rose to the top. We wanted to create an initiative that helped the ever-growing population of those dealing with the disease understand that what they eat plays a huge role in managing and even reversing their outcomes, she said.

In doing this, we discovered that lower income patients who are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes often are not given the information that they need to understand how to live with their disease, she added.

Participants in the program also attend two other Purdue Extension programs: Dining with Diabetes and Be Heart Smart. Dining with Diabetes, led by Christiansen, helps participants learn ways to manage diabetes through food choices, meal planning, food preparation, and physical activity. Be Heart Smart helps individuals identify risk factors for heart disease and make simple, heart-healthy lifestyle changes. Christiansen said these efforts demonstrate how committed people can come together to solve a challenging problem.

Its been an amazing opportunity to work with our community partners to provide a meaningful program for our participants, and especially compelling to see how our efforts have made a positive impact in their lives and their health, Christiansen said.

The upcoming program has added some new aspects, based on feedback received from participants, including physical activity, a mental health professional to assist individuals in making sustainable behavioral changes, and a partnership with the Master Gardeners of Vigo County to help grow fresh produce.

A judging committee selected the winners based on their programs creativity, evidence of cooperation, and impact on the community. The conference presents several awards, including the Staff Member of the Year, which was awarded to George Okantey in 2019, a Purdue Extension Community Development Educator for more than 20 years.

5 qualities of the best personal trainers – PhillyVoice.com

Exercise is a key ingredient in a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, knowing the proper way to exercise for your age, ability, fitness goals, and injuries can be complicated. If youre going about it alone, be prepared to weed through bad information in search of the answers. However, even ifyoure fortunate enough to have the budget to hire a personal trainer, theres still the problem of choosing between dozens, if not hundreds of personal trainers. How does one choose the right personal trainer for them? Simple: look for these 5 qualities of the best personal trainers.

In the age of social media, anybody can pose as an expert and promote themselves as such. While researching, you need to make sure you can view their education background so you can be sure theyre qualified to take you through a workout program.

Unfortunately, the fitness industry isnt very well regulated and there is no governing body that forces trainers to have certain credentials. This can be very dangerous for the unsuspecting client. Unlike searching for attorneys or doctors that you know have the proper college degree and credentials, you may be working with a trainer that has an online certification they passed over the weekend. Ideally, you really want to look for a personal trainer that has a college degree in exercise in addition to a nationally recognized certification from organizations like the NSCA, ACE, ACSM, and NASM, just to name a few, says Brian Maher, owner of Philly Personal Training, a private personal training gym in Philadelphia.

This scene is all too common in many gyms: a personal trainer taking a 73-year-old woman through the same workout packed with heavy lunges, squats, and deadlifts he or she just had for a 23 year old athlete. The best personal trainers dont take the same workouts and apply them to every client. Instead, they adapt to each individual clients fitness levels, age, goals, and more to create a completely customized program that will give that individual the results theyre looking for. Which leads us to our next quality of the best personal trainers.

If your prospective personal trainer begins your first conversation by telling you about the great results youll get before asking you anything about you, be wary. The best personal trainers know how to listen to you as the client first. After all, how will a personal trainer know what they can help you with if they dont even know what your goals are or what injuries you may be experiencing? Theres a great deal of information a trainer will need to know before coming up with any sort of workout programming. Being a great listener will come in handy once youre a client as well. There will be workouts where something may feel off or you may feel more sore or more tired. A good personal trainer will take that information and adjust your workouts accordingly.

The best personal trainers arent trainers who simply show you exercise form. While hearing all the technical terms of human biomechanics and physiology can sound impressive to the average person, it means nothing if you dont understand what it really means. The best trainers will teach you everything they know about an exercise and break it down into terms you can understand so you can take that information into the gym with you when you work out on your own.

Not only are the best personal trainers great teachers, they also love to teach. Any trainer who is willing to teach you everything they know about exercise is a trainer who is truly passionate about what they do, and a passionate trainer is going to care so much more about your results than a trainer who isnt passionate. When you have a trainer that really cares about you and your results, you have someone on your team whos going to make sure you reach your goal, Maher adds.

Where can you find personal trainers who possess all these qualities? Theexpert personal training staff at Philly Personal Training was created with all of these qualities and more in mind. At Philly Personal Training, youll be matched with an attentive, passionate expert in exercise science who will guide you to reach your desired fitness goals. Every personal trainer on staff has a 4-year college degree in exercise in addition to a nationally recognized personal training certification, so you can be sure youre working with a real expert.
