Hello! Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Cherry Rose Tan. I currently lead a mental health movement, based in the tech industry, thats called For Founders, by Founders.

As somebody who is a serial entrepreneur and speaker, Im really passionate about bringing the mental health conversation to the tech world. I was previously a tech founder myself, and having gone through that experience, I know the entrepreneurial journey is kind of like a rollercoaster. There are a lot of high-highs, but there are also low-lows. So my commitment with For Founders, by Founders is to provide a safe space, especially for people in the tech world, to take off their masks and feel comfortable sharing their stories.

What does a safe space mean in the context of your work?

In the context of the work that I do, the way a safe space gets created can be dependent on the situation or the organization or conference Im working with. So, sometimes I might just be with the people I work with most tech CEOs and executives. We discuss what place they are at in their life; what they are experiencing as an entrepreneur, but also what they are experiencing as just a person. They could be feeling pretty raw or vulnerable. It has to be a safe space for them to feel comfortable just having an initial conversation with me to say, Hey, Id like to acknowledge a problem Im experiencing.

I would say a different level of impact is possible if people get to a place where they can say, Ok, now lets have a mental health conversation as a team or as a company. In the past two years, a lot of my work involved speaking on stage at conferences, like Collision. Its really exciting to bring mental health programming to these spaces and broaden the conversation.

You often speak to tech CEOs about their challenges. Would you say theres room for tech companies to make mental health a priority at all levels so everyone can receive support?

Honestly, 100 percent. People in the tech community know Founders as the company that is capturing very deep stories from prolific tech leaders. They are all CEOs. Once a person came to me and said, I get that youre working with CEOs, but what about everyone else in the tech industry?

And to be frank, if youre working in the startup world and I know, I came from crypto it can be cutthroat. People feel like they are always on the go. Youre trying to innovate, youre trying to build the best IP and all of your competitors are either working at the same pace or trying to go faster.

So, its my sincere hope that this movement will serve the entire industry. And I think its important that were starting where we are. These leaders are setting the tone for the rest of the industry. There are so many people counting on leaders to lead properly. If leaders arent thinking with clarity, or without a level of self-care, then problems emerge in organizations. If the director is burned out, then the managers become burned out, and then the employees.

That trickles down to the next generation who come into the workforce and feel the pressure of well, Im going to have to sacrifice my personal life to make this work. The passion and the commitment of this movement is really about taking a stand, and frankly bringing a sense of humanity back into tech culture. Yes, were competitive. Yes, were innovative. But we also have to take care of our people.

We started off with tech CEOs because we believe that if there is a buy-in at the highest level. Theres a greater chance of implementing permanent change and were really about playing the long game.

What are some of the mental health challenges tech CEOs and founders encounter?

One of the most frequent topics that comes up is loneliness. I think, oftentimes, theres this illusion that tech life is always glamorous. But even if youre raising $20 million in investments, that doesnt mean youre not experiencing personal struggles.

Ill often get cold emails from people that essentially say, I read the stories on your website, and where I live, I dont have anybody to talk to in my circle about whats really going on with me. And if youre in a public position where there is this perception youve got it all, and you want to project the image that youre strong and successful, it can lead to this feeling of isolation and loneliness.

What advice do you give to people who feel stress or loneliness but feel they cant reveal that to others?

I know this word has gotten trendy, but honestly, I think one of the best things a person can do is engage in self-care. Its something I can speak to personally. When I first started as an entrepreneur, I felt a lot of pressure to do the hustle and grind. I always pushed myself harder and ended up, unfortunately, working somewhere between 80 and 100 hours a week.

I did that for years. Then one day, I woke up and came to a point where, mentally and physically, I was completely burned out. It wasnt a reflection of my ability I know that I am a high performer but I just never thought self-care was something for me. I thought it was something other people needed. I had too much pride.

And I was proud of the amazing things my team was doing, but I could see the impact on my body. I was having trouble sleeping, I couldnt relax; I couldnt stop thinking about work. I wasnt present with my friends and family. It really took a toll on my life.

The ironic thing is and I didnt learn this until I went through it myself a lot of people go into tech entrepreneurship because of the freedom of lifestyle. They hope that if they work hard enough, they can make enough money to have the lifestyle they want. And ironically, when you burn out, you miss out on what you wanted first of all having a healthy lifestyle.

I really advise people to take the steps to take care of themselves, and then they can start taking care of other people. Its important to slow down and check-in with yourself. Maybe youre not finding the solution youre looking for because youre tired and just need to focus on solutions like exercising, eating, and sleeping well.

Free program in Surrey for families of kids ‘off the healthy weight trajectory’ – Surrey Now-Leader

A free program that aims to make obese children healthier will be offered in Surrey and eight other B.C. cities this winter.

The Generation Health program is offered to families with kids aged eight to 12 who are off the healthy weight trajectory, with a 10-week session set to start Feb. 7 at Tong Louie YMCA.

The sessions will be held there on Fridays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., plus online sessions and group activities.

The family-focused, interactive program uses a lifestyle behaviour approach for promoting healthy weights in children and youth, according to a post at generationhealth.ca, where registration is now open. People can call 1-888-650-3141 for more details, or email info@generationhealth.ca.

The program will support you in making family changes to healthy behaviours such as healthy eating, physical activity, screen time and sleep that support your childs own health behaviours, a description says.

Its all focused on practical, fun activities that build family connectedness while building both the parent/caregivers and the childs skills to make lasting changes. As well, the program incorporates positive mental health activities that build resilience and self confidence and help to enhance overall well-being.

The program is funded by the provincial government via the Childhood Obesity Foundation, which launched a pilot for it in the fall of 2018.

READ MORE: Anti-childhood obesity program launching in Surrey all about habits, not weight

Almost one-third of children and teens in B.C. are above a healthy weight, said foundation chair Dr. Tom Warshawski, a Kelowna-based pediatrician. Several years ago, the province came to our foundation and said, What can we do about this? This is the made-in-B.C. program thats been developed.

The program is for preteens who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) above the 85th percentile for their age.

Warshawski said if parents think their kids are of an unhealthy weight, they probably are.

To make sure, they should visit a doctor have their height and weight measured, he said.

We dont talk about weight in the program at all, its about putting people on a more healthy lifestyle, and that involves the whole family everyone gets involved, Warshawski added.

The program is offered at sites in Surrey, Vancouver, Victoria, Burnaby, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Penticton and Prince George.

A Family Goal Setting blog was posted to generationhealth.ca on Dec. 31.

As the New Year rolls around, we all tend to think about resolutions or accomplishments we hope to strive for individually or as a family, the post says. Sometimes all we do is think about them or perhaps work towards them for a brief time then feel lousy when we dont meet our goals. Its key to focus only on a short list of achievable or S.M.A.R.T. goals if we want to be successful instead of demotivated.

S stands for specificinstead of saying were going to be more active, individually or as a family, quantify it like we are going to do one family physical activity each weekend and brainstorm together to create a list of ideas to get you started (e.g. going to the pool, trying a new hiking trail or hitting a trampoline park).

M stands for measurableensure you set a target so you stay motivated and know youre reaching success. Think up a fun, non-food reward, for meeting those milestones like buying a new board game or going to a movie everyone is excited to see.

A stands for achievableit wouldnt make sense to choose the above goal of adding a family physical activity each weekend if one family member works weekends for example, or to train for a full marathon when current running levels are only a couple of kilometres. Make sure everyone is in agreement about the attainability of the type and timing of the activity or family goal.

R stands for realisticperhaps your goal is about cooking and eating at home together as a family more often. Is it realistic to set the goal for every single evening, especially on a day thats busy with extracurricular activities? It might be more realistic to strive for 5 out of 7 days for example or one more day than your family is currently cooking and eating together.

T stands for time-basedconsider setting one or two long-term goals but also some short-term daily, weekly or monthly goals. Its very motivating when you achieve success with the short-term goals and can continue to strive for the long-term ones.

Study reveals physical activities that can reduce cancer risks – Times of India

There are innumerable health advantages of exercising regularly. Adding to the benefits, a recent study suggests that physical activities and exercise can reduce the risk of developing cancer.A study of nine trials of 7,50,000 people showed a reduced risk of seven types of cancers with a fixed amount of physical activity during leisure time. Many types of cancer have a relationship of 'dose/response' from the seven cancers identified in the report. The study was conducted by researchers of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and National Cancer Institute from the American Cancer Society and is published in the Journal -- Clinical Oncology."Physical activity guidelines have largely been based on their impact on chronic diseases like cardiovascular illness and diabetes," said Alpa Patel, senior scientific director of epidemiology research of the American Cancer Society. The guidelines for activity stated that 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate-intensity workout in a week or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity is the ideal amount of physical activity for sustaining a healthy lifestyle.Researchers after the study found that engaging in recommended amounts of activity (7.5 to 15 MET-hours/week) was associated with a statistically significant lower risk of seven of the 15 cancer types studied, with the reduction increasing with more MET-hours.Physical activity was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer in men (8 per cent for 7.5 MET-hours/week; 14 per cent for 15 MET-hours/week), female breast cancer (6-10 per cent), endometrial cancer (10-18 per cent), kidney cancer (11-17 per cent), myeloma (14-19 per cent), liver cancer (18-27 per cent), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (11-18 per cent in women)."These data provide strong support that these recommended levels are important to cancer prevention, as well," said Patel. The researchers' results have directly supported the activity levels suggested for cancer prevention.

Definition of Healthy Lifestyle | Healthfully

A healthy lifestyle leaves you fit, energetic and at reduced risk for disease, based on the choices you make about your daily habits. Good nutrition, daily exercise and adequate sleep are the foundations for continuing good health. Managing stress in positive ways, instead of through smoking or drinking alcohol, reduces wear and tear on your body at the hormonal level. For a longer and more comfortable life, put together your plan for a healthy lifestyle and live up to it.

Your cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, immune and other body systems depend on a continual supply of nutrients to feed cell growth and metabolism. To get the dozens of essential forms of protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals and fats, you need to eat a varied diet. According to the guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, your diet should contain mostly whole grains, fruits, vegetables and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Consume lean meats such as chicken and turkey, along with legumes, eggs and healthy nuts. Limit your portion sizes at meals to control your weight and your risk for cardiovascular and other diseases through your lifestyle.

Calories accompany the nutrition in foods, and if you dont expend them all, youll gain weight. Carrying extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Your lifestyle should support a constant healthy weight, so remain active daily. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services outlined the Physical Fitness Guidelines for Americans, and these guidelines focus on muscle strengthening exercise, such as weight lifting, along with aerobic exercise, such as walking or running 5. The guidelines suggest working toward completing 150 hours of exercise a week, but inactive adults should build to this gradually under the supervision of their doctor. You should also include exercise, such as yoga to improve flexibility.

Daily metabolism perpetuates the decline and rejuvenation of cellular tissue, and the bodys self-repair takes place when you are asleep. Memory consolidation and appetite regulation also occur during this time of reduced physical activity. The National Sleep Foundation considers seven to nine hours of sleep a nightly criterion for a healthy lifestyle 34.

Your body responds to everyday stress with a release of hormones that prepares you to react. If you dont relieve this state through relaxation, the effects build and can create muscular pain, headaches, sleep disturbances and other symptoms. A lifestyle that includes regular stress management breaks this cycle before it can progress to unhealthy levels. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggests limiting some of your activities to make time for relaxation 5. Achieve physical release through stretching, massage, yoga or enjoyable exercise. Connect with friends and family to relieve mental pressures, and take time out to read, pursue a hobby or experience another activity that makes you feel good.

Five Sleep Myths that Damages a Persons Mental and Physical Health – Latin Post

Sleep provides lots ofbenefitsfor the body. Sleep helps cure stress, improve a person's ability to store information on their brain, it can lower the blood pressure of a person; strengthen a person's immune system and a lot more.

However, too much sleep is bad for the body. To be healthy, a person should get the required hours of sleep. Oversleeping can result in negative effects on the body. Oversleeping can affect the proper functioning of the brain, impairs fertility, result in weight gain, and a lot more.

Everything should be taken in moderation to live a healthy lifestyle. There are also common myths about sleep that may pose threats to the health of a person.

The following are some of themyths about sleepthat may pose negative effects on a person's health:

According to Margaret Thatcher (a previous Prime Minister of the UK), she spends four hours of sleep at night. Some other personalities had also shared the same habit. This is a common story for business-related successes.

Many people in the entrepreneurial field had shared that getting a short period of sleep had led them to their success.

However, researchers had stated thatsleep mythslike sleeping for less than five hours are one of the most health-damaging among all.

According to Rebecca Robbins, numerous evidence prove that sleeping for less than five hours has severe negative effects on a person's health including increasing the chances of acquiring cardiovascular illnesses. To be healthy, she suggests that everyone should get at least seven hours of good night's sleep.

According to Doctor Robbins, it is true that alcohol may help a person fall asleep. However, it also decreases a person's opportunity to get the required quality of sleep.

Doctor Robbins said that alcohol interrupts a person's REM or rapid eye movement level of sleep. This myth is one of thesleep mythsthat may negatively affect the REM stage where a person is retaining memory and learned skills.

According to Doctor Robbins, if someone will be watching the television during the night, there is a high chance that the show will be news. She said that this may cause stress to a person and may cause them to attain insomnia. Also, smart digital devices and tablets emit blue light that prevents the body to release the right amount of melatonin or the hormone that induces a person to feel sleepy.

According to Doctor Robbins, most people associate insomnia with their beds. She said that a change of environment may help a person fall asleep faster.

She suggested that doing something else like folding clothes may also help a person feel sleepy.

Doctor Robbins said that it is best to get up from bed when the alarm goes on. The extra couple of minutes a person will get from getting back to sleep after their alarm rings will only result in an insignificant value of sleep.

According to Doctor Robbins, once the alarm goes on, a person may open their curtains and let a good amount of light enter their room to wake them up.

Sleep helps a person recover from the stress and tiredness of the day. It helps renew a person's energy to fully face the challenges of the next day. Getting the right amount and good quality of sleep is important to a person's health though too much of it may also pose threats to a person's well-being. Take note of thesesleep mythsto improve your lifestyle and health.

Which meat is healthiest to eat? – Fox News

Dear Dr. Manny,

What kind of meat is the best meat to eat? I keep hearing that red meat is bad for you and can cause all kinds of diseases. Is that true? What does it do to the body?

Thanks for your question.

There is no one good meat for everyone to eat because everyones body is different and requires different nutrients. However, usually, the best kinds of meat to eat are low in fat and high in protein.

IS CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE IN DEER DANGEROUS FOR HUMANS?

Sirloin steak is one of these meats because three ounces of steak has 25 grams of protein.

Oftentimes, the meat isnt the problem, but the added salt and seasonings can make it less healthy. Rely on meats that arent as seasoned. Rotisserie chicken is high on flavor but low on seasoning, making it the most healthy kind of chicken to eat.

Chicken thighs are also good for you because they have good fats, fatty acids, and iron. Dont deep fry your chicken, but bake it or roast it instead.

WHAT IS THE IRON LUNG MACHINE USED FOR?

Pork chops are good sources of lean protein and low saturated fat. Canned fish has 100 percent of the omega-threes that your body needs in a day.

Red meat is not necessarily bad for you. In fact, it is full of nutrition. Raw ground beef contains Vitamin B3, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, iron, zinc, and selenium. However, observational studies have shown that eating red meat on a regular basis can cause problems with your heart and may potentially increase your risk of cancer.

However, it is hard to prove that red meat is the only cause for these health problems. It is better to eat red meat as part of a healthy, balanced diet and strive overall for a healthy lifestyle and diet.
